seven miles north of ,jackson1 the capital1 and there is no similar school of higher grade admitting colored students nearer than about #bjj miles south1 east1 or north1 and none much nearer west4 are citizens and voters1 and whether exercising their rights as such or deprived of them1 are equally1 almost1 a source of dangerous power which cannot but fill us with grave apprehensions1 if we but think of it4 ,the census tables proclaim loudly that death nor destiny will mitigate this danger2 is it not time for a wise statesmanship to undertake seriously the task of dissipating it by a good and ample system of education which will qualify the negro for the duties thrust upon him8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,tonic ,,sol-,,fa ,,system ,,of ,,teaching ,,music4 ,,by ,,theodore ,f4 ,,seward4 ,that music is one of the special gifts of the colored people has long been known and recognized4 ,how to develop that gift in the wisest manner and to the best advantage of the race1 is a question which ought to receive a practical answer1 and as speedily as possible4 ,if they are peculiarly susceptible to the refining and elevating influences of such an art as music1 it is very desirable that these influences be brought to bear upon them just now1 while in the formative stage of their history4 ,fortunately1 or as ,i like better to say1 providentially1 the way is now opened for that result4 ,a system has been devised and perfected in ,england1 and is now beginning to be generally adopted in this country1 which so simplifies the study of music as to bring it within the comprehension of a little child4 ,that system bears the name which stands at the head of this article4 ,a technical description of the system would be out of place here4 ,it is enough to say that the result is accomplished and the study of music now is made easy and delightful where it was formerly perplexing and confusing4 ,how much this means for the colored people1 with their musical gifts and inspirations1 it is impossible to imagine4 ,it is not to be supposed that such special powers were bestowed upon a whole race without some very important and far-reaching purpose4 ,the unfolding of that purpose was begun in a very wonderful way by the ,jubilee ,singers4 ,but their mission was among the ,caucasian races rather than among their own people4 ,the ,tonic ,sol-fa system comes to fill a widely different sphere1 viz43 to give to the masses an intelligent possession of the world of music4 ,the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 has done a very wise thing in taking steps to test at once the value of this system for its constituents4 ,they have commissioned a teacher to go to the ,fisk ,university and teach it during the remainder of the school year4 ,the method is so easy and natural that a thorough knowledge of its fundamental principles can be imparted in that time1 and not only that1 but all who learn it can teach it intelligently in their schools during the coming summer4 ,its advantages will thus begin to be felt in remote country districts1 and the reform will be carried on just where such reforms should always begin1 among the masses of the common people4 ,the teacher who has been appointed to this important post1 ,mr4 ,j4 ,w4 ,adams1 is one who is singularly fitted by his history and antecedents to engage in this special work4 ,born in ,england1 he was taken by his parents to the island of ,st4 ,helena at the age of three4 ,when nine years old he accompanied his father1 a sea captain1 on one of his voyages4 ,the vessel was wrecked on the coast of ,south ,africa1 and the young lad remained there for eighteen years4 ,he traveled extensively throughout the country on trading expeditions1 and thus became thoroughly acquainted with the manners and usages of the native tribes as well as of the ,british and ,dutch settlers4 ,he learned the ,tonic ,sol-fa system there and became so interested in it that at length he resolved to qualify himself as a teacher4 ,it is certainly a singular and interesting fact1 that the person who is first to introduce the system among the ,freedmen of ,america should have learned it in ,africa4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,success1 ,,real ,,and ,,apparent4 ,it is often difficult1 not to say impossible1 to know just what success has been achieved by any special missionary effort4 ,after years of faithful labor the missionary1 if challenged to do so1 may not be able to adduce a single satisfactory proof that he has not labored wholly in vain1 so far as the results he has been seeking are concerned4 ,on the other hand1 changes so remarkable1 so exactly in the line of what is sought and hoped for1 follow the very first proclamation of the ,gospel1 which we gladly attribute to ,divine grace2 we grow confident that at last the promise is nearing its fulfilment when 8a nation shall be born in a day40 ,now1 it should be understood that we are in danger of mistake as to the real condition of things in each case2 a mistake which breeds despair where there may be good reason for rejoicing1 or excites hopes that are fatally false on the other hand4 ,doubtless many a faithful toiler has spent his whole life in laying foundations1 deep and broad1 but out of the sight of ordinary observers1 upon which shall rise1 in magnificent proportions1 a temple to our ,god after he has gone to his reward--to the reward of one who has been faithful1 rather than of one who has been observed4 ,the merest accident may place another in such relation to this man's toils that he shall seem to be the creator of all the results for which he labored1 while he bears no other relation to them than the minnow does to the swell and roar and irresistible rush of the wave by which it has been caught and upon which it rides4 ,again1 men possessed of certain gifts1 but devoid of needed restraints in their use1 may arouse the enthusiasm of their fellows1 sway their passions1 play upon their imaginations1 excite their emotions and propel them along certain lines of activity until confidence is created that now1 at last1 the kingdom is coming with millennial celerity and power4 ,but a reaction from all this is certain1 and the ,gospel ship which just now was riding with grace and beauty upon the crest of the wave lies half buried in mud and sea-weed to await the rising of another tide4 ,the whole movement has been that of an anchored boat1 without the possibility of advance1 and worse than useless1 for in this case it has been with the waste of spiritual force4 ,there are two facts which all who are laboring for the coming of the kingdom of our ,lord should regard as fixed1 and being fixed some good degree of fixedness will be secured for their hopes with reference to its progress4 ,one of these is the amazing ignorance and wickedness of those over whom this kingdom of light and love is to be established2 and the other is the ,divine power of that kingdom and the ,divine purpose to establish it1 and hence the certainty of its establishment4 ,the ,gospel will never gain its conquests in such way as to relieve the ,church of the duty and labor and self-denial and discipline of carrying it and proclaiming it to the heathen1 who will find it1 as all people have1 opposed to all their habits and pleasures and traditions1 and will1 therefore1 when they understand it1 resist it before accepting it4 ,the cheering news which so often comes to us from ,central ,africa and other lands will doubtless be followed by most discouraging news of disappointment and seeming disaster4 ,on the other hand1 it must be remembered that in all really substantial buildings1 especially if erected on doubtful ground1 a large proportion of the cost and of the most valuable material1 and also of the time1 must be expended out of sight before it becomes a feature of the landscape4 ,in all religious movements it is especially true that much of the best material1 and much of the cost1 is utterly lost to sight before the world sees any result4 ,in the ,south1 for the past fifteen years1 the foundations have been laid for a superstructure which is to arise in grand and glorious proportions1 the joy of our land and the praise of all people4 ,we are just reaching the surface1 and others than the workmen themselves are now able to see that something has been going on during all these years4 ,if structures1 however beautiful1 which have no foundations1 must topple1 and we should feel no disappointment when they do1 we would yet understand that much has been done when a foundation broad enough pleased to see that they are interested to work for one another4 ,i found the other day that one of the older boys1 ,jas4 ,murrie1 had been accustomed to get a number of the others who were not ,christians together1 and read the ,bible and pray with them4 ,excellent work1 isn't it1 for a young chief who will soon go back to take charge of his own tribe8 ,they have a meeting of their own on ,wednesday evening1 of which they take charge themselves4 ,i could give you instances of how these ,indian boys have resisted temptation in a way which seems to me really remarkable4 ,my work among the colored students progresses very pleasantly4 ,it is hard to get out of their minds wrong conceptions as to what a ,christian life is4 ,they expect to see visions and dream dreams when they enter upon it1 and seem to look upon the entering as the all important part4 ,they haven't been used to thinking of the ,christian life as a struggle against sin4 ,it is a real pleasure to preach to them1 and they are earnest to know the truth4 ,i am trying to make the ,christian boys and girls feel their responsibility more4 ,i am trying to make them work for others4 ,we have started a ,missionary ,association for work in the country about4 ,on ,sunday afternoon twenty-five go out into the cottages to read the ,bible and pray with the poor families4 ,many of them work in the ,sunday-schools in ,hampton4 ,one goes out to the poor-house1 another to the prison4 ,they all make the reports of their work to me4 ,we are talking of starting a ,sunday-school in the ,butler ,school ,house4 ,we think we could get in many who do not now attend1 and it would give our students a chance for work4 ,i am anxious to make them feel that they are not merely to be recipients4 ,there is a good interest in our meetings1 and although ,i don't feel at all contented with what is being done1 and look for much greater things1 yet ,i am thankful for the evidences of ,god's favor which ,i see4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,georgia4 ,revival ,interest4 ,,rev4 ,c4 ,w4 ,,francis1 ,,atlanta4 ,we have great reason to rejoice in all the good things the ,lord has done for us in this school4 ,since the day of prayer for ,colleges on the last ,thursday of ,january1 we have had a very marked and general interest in religious things1 and we have reason to believe that very many have become reconciled to ,god and taken up the service of ,christ4 ,nearly every one in the family1 numbering about two hundred students1 who was not already a follower of ,christ1 has been affected and confessed an interest in the subject1 and not many have drawn back thus far4 ,about sixty have attended inquiry meetings1 and we hope a large proportion of them will hold on their way4 ,there has been a great quickening of those who bore the ,christian name1 and many of them have taken up the work as though for the first time4 ,we have held meetings every night for five weeks1 and there has been the steady presentation of the truth and much personal effort1 and so a great harvest gathered1 which fills our hearts with gladness4 ,regular school work has not been broken in upon to any great extent and there has been no tendency toward undue excitement but a deep and solemn attention to the claims of ,god has characterized the experience of most4 ,we cannot tell how many have become decided ,christians1 certainly more than twenty1 and perhaps twice that will upon trial be found steadfast4 ,some have already gone away to distant places to open schools1 and will1 we trust1 carry the light with them1 and others will go soon4 ,if they had not been reached just at this time we should probably never have had opportunity to lead them again4 ,next month we hope quite a number will unite with our church1 and many more will in due time unite with other churches4 ,we are aware of the tendency to over-estimate immediate results and to be mistaken in regard to the permanent effects of such a work here2 but it is the testimony of all that this is the most thorough and general work for years in this school4 ,it has been blessed to be here and to have a share in it4 8,it is the ,lord's doing and marvelous in our eyes40 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,john the ,baptist of the ,church--,genius for ,piety4 ,,rev4 ,b4 ,d4 ,,conkling1 ,,savannah4 ,having some friends who read the ,,missionary--when sufficiently urged to do so by their pastors--,i would like a little space to give them1 not some conclusions1 perhaps1 but some impressions of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 work4 ,i remember hearing a zealous brother1 at the ,chicago ,annual ,meeting1 earnestly urge that the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 push more vigorously the 8,church work10 that the conversion of the ,freedmen was the thing to be aimed at rather than their education1 etc4 ,a few months of experience impress me with the conviction that the school is the 8,john the ,baptist0 of the church4 ,we cannot do without each of them4 ,but we are still in the 8school0 state2 and if either is to suffer1 it must be the church work4 ,each1 in fact1 bears the same message to the masses4 ,the church is doubtless to 8increase0 greatly2 but it will yet be many days 7years7 before the school will 8decrease10 if we are wise4 ,it has sometimes been said that the colored people have what has been called1 8a genius for piety40 ,how much this means can only be understood by one who has been with them in their religious assemblies of the better sort4 ,they have a faculty for getting hold of1 and being interested in and by1 the things which are most elaborate and profound and spiritually significant in thought1 which continually surprises one4 ,they know 8meat0 from 8milk10 and are ready every time for the former4 ,they might not follow one who gave them ,rowland ,hill's fine 8river of words1 and only a spoonful of thought10 but if any man can speak thoughts in words which accurately mate each other1 ,i invite him to my pulpit1 assuring him that he will have an attentive and appreciative hearing such as delights the heart of the messenger who has something to say4 ,my impression is that the ,negro is to have a decided and beneficent influence upon the ,christianity of ,america1 if not upon that of the whole world3--but in precisely what direction ,i am not clear4 ,i have a truly noble little band of co-pastors in these churches scattered here-abouts4 ,they do not know what they are doing--nor do any of us1 ,i think--in planting the seeds of a decorous and an intelligent church life1 and one which insists upon honesty1 sobriety1 8whatsoever is of good report10 etc41 as fundamental therein1 among these people who are slowly but surely getting into a secure and respectable place in the body politic4 ,in view of their position and its opportunities one cannot help feeling--and no one can feel it as keenly as they themselves do--that it is a pity that their early advantages had not been greater4 ,nevertheless it is my ,,lathrop1 ,,macon4 ,for this season1 at least1 the name of 8,sunny ,south0 is a misnomer4 ,beginning in ,november last1 there have been almost four solid months of cold1 sour1 dismal1 cloudy1 stormy weather4 ,for ten days the thermometer stood constantly below the freezing point4 ,one night it touched zero4 ,everybody kept roaring fires1 and cowered over them in their loosely-built houses4 ,soon the coal-yards gave out1 and the wood market was empty4 ,the smooth-shod ,southern horses could not climb the icy hills to bring supplies4 ,fuel became steadily scarcer and higher--wood going up from four dollars 7the usual price7 to fifteen dollars per cord1 and very scarce at that4 ,rich and poor alike suffered4 ,many burned the fences1 fruit trees and shade trees4 ,poor people burned their board partitions1 bedsteads1 tables1 even chairs and trunks1 and some1 after all1 had to go to bed as the only means of keeping warm4 ,the 8fuel famine0 lasted ten or twelve days1 the like of which was never known before4 ,water-pipes burst1 fruits1 flowers and vegetables were frozen1 and general distress ensued4 ,the chilly rain still continues1 though ice and snow have disappeared4 ,i doubt if the 8blizzards0 and 8,arctic waves0 of the ,north cause much more real suffering than this chilly1 damp1 freezing winter here brings to the inhabitants so unaccustomed to this weather4 ,most ,southern houses are very loosely built1 generally warmed with fire-places or coal grates1 over which you may scorch one side and freeze the other4 ,water froze one day within six feet of our stove4 ,much suffering1 sickness and death have resulted among the poor in their wretched cabins4 ,fortunately for some our kind friends ,north have this winter sent us an unusual amount of clothing1 which has been distributed judiciously among those most needy1 and has done much to alleviate distress4 ,my wife has given away over #djj garments within the past three mouths1 and many shivering bodies have been warmed4 ,from our own good ,state of ,wisconsin we have had no less than seventeen boxes or barrels1 containing books1 clothing1 magazines and newspapers4 ,from friends in other ,states there have come eleven packages of various sizes1 with the same acceptable help for our poor people4 ,and how helpful these timely gifts have been6 ,although my wife has had no special commission as missionary1 she has done considerable in that line4 ,during three mouths past1 she has made over two hundred and fifty visits1 being confined to the house by illness for one month of that time1 and being much hindered otherwise by the incessant stormy weather1 which has also greatly interfered with our evening meetings and ,sunday services4 ,besides the clothing above referred to1 she has distributed hundreds of papers1 tracts1 cards and texts1 reading and talking with the women and children4 ,her sewing-school1 meeting weekly1 has steadily increased1 until it now numbers ninety-three girls1 of whom sixty were present at the last meeting4 ,cutting and basting work for so many occupies a good deal of time4 ,at our annual church meeting1 the reports showed that eighteen persons had been received on profession of faith during the year #ahhj1 and #bef raised for church purposes4 ,the ,sunday-school reported #bbj names on the roll1 of whom #age were present at one time1 and the average attendance for the year was #aae4 ,ten of the scholars united with the church1 and the school has raised about #fj in weekly contributions4 ,the pastor and wife gave away #h1ejj religious and ,sunday-school papers during the year4 ,one of the papers has a story4 ,it was given to a little girl in our infant class1 who took it home and carefully preserved it4 ,her father1 not a ,christian man1 was soon after arrested and confined in jail for several months for stealing4 ,the little girl carried him her ,sunday-school papers to read4 ,one of these told the story of ,joseph and the baker in the ,egyptian prison1 and suggested that every prisoner1 and every sinner1 had a divine intercessor at the throne1 ,jesus ,christ1 the ,saviour1 who would not forget his friends in trouble1 as the baker did4 ,so he began to pray1 and when released from jail soon after1 was a converted man4 ,we have received a great many papers from ,northern ,sunday-schools and other friends1 and shall be glad to receive many more4 ,much good may be done by this means1 as the above incident illustrates4 ,from the incessant storms1 floods and cold of this winter1 the people need more help than ever by way of clothing for the destitute1 and all other aids4 ,all kinds of business have suffered1 and the high prices of fuel and other necessaries have caused many to be perplexed as to the wherewithal of eating and putting on4 ,many of the country churches have hardly been able to keep up services at all1 owing to storms and floods4 ,i have collected over #a1jjj volumes for my 8,lewis ,public ,library10 and it is doing good work4 ,i expect soon to issue a little missionary paper4 ,our ,lewis ,high ,school is increasing in numbers4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,alabama4 ,accessions to the ,church4 ,,rev4 ,g4 ,w4 ,,andrews1 ,,talladega4 ,twenty-three connected themselves with our ,college ,church yesterday ,march #fth2 twenty-two of them by confession1 and one by letter3 fruits of a revival scarcely yet ended4 ,all but two of them are children or young people2 twenty-one are members of the ,sabbath-school and of the ,college4 ,twelve are children of church members1 now a long time with us4 ,two are wives for whom faithful and godly husbands had hoped and prayed1 lo6 these many years2 there had been the secret hope but never before the open confession4 ,two were baptized by immersion1 the rest followed the better way1 choosing less of the outward and formal1 and more of the inward and spiritual4 ,of the thirty girls boarding at ,foster ,hall1 all are ,christians1 as are the forty boys1 with two or three exceptions4 ,very few of those who come under our ,christian influences so far as to be members of our family and ,sabbath-school1 fail to indulge a hope in ,christ4 ,we had meetings every night for three weeks1 ,pres4 ,de,forest preaching with great tenderness and power1 while all the teachers and workers did faithfully what they could4 ,so far from interfering with regular school duties1 these meetings quickened to highest endeavor in study1 and led to the most careful and conscientious use of time4 ,never before have our pupils been so conscientious and so well-behaved4 ,among the thirty girls at the boarding hall there has been but a single case of discipline since the present school year has begun1 and that grew out of a voluntary confession1 a sign of a very tender conscience4 ,all the meetings have been unusually quiet2 not a case of noisy demonstration1 no great 8sights10 no 8dreams10 but a thoughtful surrender to ,christ1 very much1 ,i think1 as in the evening worship4 ,the pleasant afternoon had given place to a chilly night4 ,in a warm but not overheated room all were attentive to the opening exercises4 ,in the midst of the second hymn1 which all had arisen to sing1 one or two young men near the door were seen to pass out quickly from the room4 ,several others followed at their heels1 when1 immediately1 as by a common instinct1 both divisions of the assembly turned and pressed down the aisles toward the two front doors4 ,not a word of alarm was spoken by an individual and the order1 8back60 8back60 which was given from the rostrum1 checked for a minute this sudden movement1 and some at the doors hesitated whether to pass out or to return4 ,a moment more when a quantity of water fell from the ceiling through the thimble of the stove pipe1 simultaneously with the cry of 8fire0 without1 all in the room became aware of the real cause of alarm4 ,the young men who first passed out ran to the hall above1 and1 with what water was found in three or four rooms which they burst into1 attempted to put out the fire4 ,it was found to have broken out1 however1 above them1 beneath the roof and very close also to the open bell-tower4 ,this tower1 with the long1 straight hall1 which1 at one end1 opened into it1 and at the other had an outside stair door--the only entrance--provided at the start a powerful1 furnace-like draught to the flames1 which had they not been out of reach1 could have been with difficulty brought under control4 ,within one hour our chapel was entirely consumed4 ,during this time the young men managed to save a trunk1 in some cases1 a handful of clothes1 a few books1 or whatever else they could snatch out of their rooms the quickest4 ,a number lost everything except what they were wearing at the time4 ,in several instances what was thrown out of windows and carried to a safe distance from the burning building was stolen by enterprising neighbors4 ,no sooner was the chapel well in flames than the attention of everybody was centered in the effort to save adjacent buildings1 and especially the mansion1 the most valuable of all4 ,this and the chapel stood broadside toward each other1 #cg yards apart4 ,we had1 however1 the advantage of a flat iron roof easily accessible to work upon4 ,to keep the northern side of the building thoroughly wet with water thrown from the roof1 from the ground1 and from the second-story veranda1 was the work of a long half hour1 each moment of which we expected to see the building take fire4 ,the working force of our institution was put to its utmost strain for the whole of this time4 ,this and all the other buildings were saved4 ,the conduct of our students was truly admirable4 ,each young man worked with a will1 wherever he was placed1 or at whatever needed to be done at the moment1 whether it was at the pumps or carrying water1 guarding a roof1 or taking out furniture and books4 ,none worked harder than some of those who had rooms in the chapel building and were losing nearly all they had1 forgetful even of the trunk or handful of clothing that lay somewhere scattered about in the yard--all that was left of their possessions4 ,many of the young women1 also1 showed much presence of mind and were of great service4 ,one was found upon the roof of the mansion with a bucket of water4 ,we received much assistance1 too1 from friendly neighbors both white and colored4 ,one old colored woman was the means of saving a great deal from the burning building1 running in and out carrying away the books and loose furniture4 ,previous to the fire every available room was occupied by our students1 and many apartments which were barely comfortable for two had to accommodate three4 ,at ten o'clock that ,sunday night our main dormitory for young men was in ashes4 ,thirty were without a place to sleep4 ,for that night fifteen were stowed away on the floor of one of the teachers' rooms in the mansion1 five were put similarly in one of the offices1 and the rest managed to squeeze themselves into the ten beds at the 8,barracks40 ,it shows the earnest disposition of the class of students which are attracted to ,tougaloo ,university that we were able the next morning1 promptly at nine o'clock1 to go on with the regular school work4 ,the classes all recited as usual1 though school books had been scattered upon the campus and our school room and two recitation rooms had been turned to ashes by the flames4 ,the ,monday writing-class1 however1 did not meet4 ,pens and desks were burnt4 ,the fire has indeed seemed to result in a moral blessing1 softening the disposition of many1 and teaching a lesson of unselfishness4 ,it has served1 we think1 to attach our better class of students to the institution as perhaps never before4 ,students have been arriving every week since the fire and we have sent none of them away4 ,the very week following brought us half a dozen young men4 ,in addition to this1 about the first of ,march quite a number of young men as well as young women are expected to return to us from their winter schools4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,tennessee4 ,statistics of ,teaching by ,students now in ,fisk ,university4 ,from reports carefully made out by students now in attendance on ,fisk ,university1 the following facts are ascertained3 ,ninety have at some time been engaged in school teaching4 ,of these1 sixty-two are members of the collegiate department and twenty-eight of the normal department4 ,the time taught in all1 including the past year1 is #a1fcj months1 or reduced to school years of nine months each1 #afa #a-i years4 ,it is found that during the year #ahhj1 seventy-two have taught school1 the sum of the months being #cji4 ,this reduced to school years of nine months each1 gives #cd years4 ,the sum total of salaries earned in #ahhj1 is #i1abi4 ,from this must be subtracted for cost of board and travel1 #c1bcf1 leaving a net gain of #e1hic4 ,the entire number of pupils taught during the year is #e1fda1 and the sum of average daily attendance is #c1gag4 ,of the seventy-two who taught these schools1 sixty-seven did labor in ,sunday-schools1 forty-four as teachers1 seven as superintendents and sixteen as both teachers and superintendents4 ,the total attendance on these ,sunday-schools was #c1ifc4 ,besides this1 four did labor in preaching1 twelve held prayer-meetings and one held ,bible readings4 ,the number of conversions reported is #aea4 ,thirty-two taught in ,tennessee1 twenty-two in ,mississippi1 eight in ,texas1 four in ,alabama1 four in ,arkansas1 two in ,georgia1 one in ,west ,virginia1 and one in ,missouri4 ,inferences drawn from these statistics3 #a4 ,nearly all the students in ,fisk ,university of sufficient age and advancement in scholarship1 teach during their courses of study4 ,it is found that eighty per cent4 of the students in the collegiate department have taught4 ,those who have not taught are too young to take charge of a school4 ,the per cent4 of those in the ,normal department who have taught1 is less1 because the advancement in scholarship is less1 as is also the average age4 #b4 ,the average salary per month is #bi4ed4 ,the average cost for board and travel1 not calculating other expenses1 is #aj4dg4 ,this leaves the net gain per month of #ai4jg4 ,this in reality is reduced somewhat by loss of time often incurred in securing a school1 or in waiting for it to begin after it is secured4 #c4 ,it is seen that the students are making very praiseworthy efforts to gain an education1 and that they earn annually a large sum of money to secure that end4 ,still1 at a net gain of #ai4jg a month1 the student cannot entirely support himself4 ,parents should consider well this fact1 not fully understood1 as it would appear1 by some of those able to assist their children4 ,those kind friends who have given to the ,student ,aid ,fund of the ,university1 will see that their benefactions are needed and well bestowed4 #d4 ,this condition of things1 if the strain is not allowed to be too severe1 has a compensating benefit to the student1 who grows strong by contending with difficulties4 ,he learns the value of education by its cost4 ,he obtains that practical experience which students ordinarily have to acquire after graduation4 ,he is also kept in sympathy with the people among whom his future labors are to lie4 #e4 ,these statistics show that1 while in the midst of their own arduous labors as students1 these young people are accomplishing a great amount of good in a field to which now1 happily1 the eyes of the nation are turned1 the education of the colored people4 ,during the last year1 when1 for reasons not necessary now to give1 a less number of students than usual were engaged in teaching1 they had under their training an army of between five and six thousand children1 and performed the labor of more than the ordinary lifetime of a man2 and1 including former years1 they have done the work of more than a hundred and sixty years4 #f4 ,but the whole good is not to be estimated in years4 ,the great mass of the teachers among the colored people1 as among the white1 teach with little if any more preparation than what is gained in the common schools4 ,the coming into a community of one who has enjoyed superior advantages1 introduces a better idea to which others will seek to attain4 ,one of the most threatening obstacles in the way of colored education has been the great lack of competent colored teachers4 ,the paying of incompetent teachers is almost1 if not entirely1 a waste of the public money4 ,viewing from this standpoint1 the long and expensive journeys necessarily taken by the students of ,fisk ,university to reach their schools1 may not be a loss but a benefit1 by scattering further the good influence of the ,university4 ,in a region where one good teacher is sent1 ten schools will be made better4 #g4 ,in addition to the devotional exercises held in their schools by the greater majority of the students1 much other religious work is done4 ,during the last year six preached1 twelve held prayer-meetings and one ,bible readings1 while ninety-six per cent4 of all are now engaged in ,sunday-school labor4 ,a more accurate knowledge of the ,scriptures and better idea of ,christian living must be the result of these labors4 #h4 ,from a list of institutions of learning where some of those1 now students in ,fisk ,university1 studied before coming to it1 many of them of high standing and scattered over the land1 it is seen that this ,university cannot claim these good results entirely as its own4 ,it shows also that the ,university1 situated as it is1 midway between the gulf and the lakes1 is becoming a great central school of learning4 #i4 ,no mention is made in these statistics of any students not now in attendance on the ,university4 ,the exact number of those in that class who are now teaching1 is not known4 ,it is known1 however1 that many such are devoting their entire time to teaching and some of them are already occupying positions of honor and importance as educators4 ,according to estimates derived from reports given by former presumptuous to believe that the prayer has been answered1 his promise fulfilled1 his guidance vouchsafed8 ,it would be meanly ungrateful if ,i did not thus testify for ,him4 ,but the point is that now we must go deeper4 ,we cannot rest on the outer edge of the great work4 ,we must avail ourselves to the utmost of our opportunity1 and for this we must have a marked increase of means4 ,toward this1 now that ,god has inclined these ,english brethren to give so largely1 ,i cannot believe that ,american ,christians will fail to make fitting response4 ,and inasmuch as ,i cannot see how more than #a1ejj out of the #b1djj remaining to be raised1 can possibly be gathered in ,california1 ,i venture to press it on the thoughts and hearts of ,eastern friends1 to furnish over and above their alone1 as ,christians1 among a crowd of ungodly and profane ,americans1 they were still walking in the truth4 ,at length1 from one of them who had settled at ,tucson1 came1 in behalf of himself and eight or nine others1 an urgent request for a mission there4 ,at the suggestion of some excellent ,christian ladies of that city1 to whom ,i appealed for advice1 and who kindly pledged their personal co-operation1 the school is to be placed in the care of ,rev4 ,mr4 ,messenger1 once a missionary of the ,episcopal ,board in ,africa4 ,he is pronounced to be 8a good ,christian1 who can sing well1 can play on the organ1 and will work earnestly0 in the liberty of ,christ and not in bondage to any ritual or liturgy4 ,the pupils attest their zeal by pledging contributions sufficient to pay the rent of the school-room1 #ae per month1 and1 perhaps1 the incidental expenses likewise4 ,pray for the success of the first ,chinese mission in ,arizona4 ,among the new schools reported in my last was that at ,oroville4 ,its teacher is a daughter of ,rev4 ,alvin ,ostrom1 pastor of the ,congregational ,church in that place1 who himself was once a missionary in ,china1 and has1 in his enforced return to this country1 been hungry these many years for an opportunity to preach ,christ again to the ,chinese4 ,i hardly need say that with such a spirit in the work tokens of a coming harvest begin to appear4 ,two or three of the pupils began to venture in1 on ,sabbaths1 to the half empty church1 and to sit in unoccupied pews4 ,whereupon an irate ,caucasian vents himself in the village newspaper in this the severe storms of the past two months have interfered with the attendance on our schools1 and even made desirable the temporary suspension of one of them1 yet there is much to encourage in the reports received4 ,at ,marysville three during last month 8joined the ,association10 professing thus their faith in ,christ1 and coming under probation with reference to reception to the church4 ,at ,sacramento the teacher writes1 rejoicing over the return to the school1 with heart apparently renewed1 of one pupil for whom she had labored and prayed with great earnestness1 but who first left our school for another1 and then seemed to 8go to the bad0 with utter recklessness4 ,but the ,lord has brought him back1 and he now applies to be received to the ,association1 and to be thus recognized as a believer in ,jesus4 ,this ,sacramento school1 as1 also1 the one in ,stockton1 that in ,marysville1 and those in this city1 are a perpetual joy to me1 in the spirit which pervades the work and the results vouchsafed4 ,indeed1 ,i know not that ,i need except any of our schools from this statement1 and ,i cease to mention them by name only because the list would be too long4 ,the great lack just
