be found in the fact that after all a man must eat or die2 this we more than suspected before the ,doctor's experiment2 neither has he settled how long a man may do without food2 but he has shown conclusively that starvation1 as a mode of living1 is not economical1 and that a life thus sustained is not worth anything4 ,it cost a great deal to keep him alive1 and the utmost he could do was to be driven out for a daily airing4 ,this lesson constitutes the sole value of his elaborate and painful experiment3 ,a man who is to do anything must be properly nourished2 plenty of good1 wholesome food is cheaper than a diet of ice-water4 ,good friends1 we need not repeat the ,doctor's experiment to prove that the policy of starvation is a mistaken policy1 and is every way expensive and hurtful4 ,the question is not how long can a life be sustained at the point of starvation1 which is also the point of utter worthlessness1 but how much can a life properly nourished be made to accomplish8 ,our parable needs no explanation4 ,three hundred and fifty thousand dollars is the least sum that should be named as at all adequate to the highest efficiency of our school and church work4 ,we can live on less1 but by so much as we fall short of this by so much are we hampered and crippled4 ,the work we have to do is a work that must be done1 and we1 the churches of the country1 have it to do4 ,it becomes1 of course1 a question of wise economy in the expenditure of means4 ,we point again to the lesson taught us and reiterate it3 ,starvation is not economy6 ,the condition of greatest efficiency is that of abundant life blood2 and for the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 for #ahha1 this means at least three hundred and fifty thousand dollars4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,freemasonry4 ,in the ,,missionary for ,october1 #ahhj1 an item appeared1 copied mainly from an ,atlanta paper1 giving some statistics in regard to the colored people of that city4 ,it named the amount of their taxable property1 their industrial pursuits1 and benevolent and charitable institutions--the ,odd ,fellows and ,masonic lodges being mentioned among the number4 ,of all these institutions the article quoted said that they have encouraged the people 8to form habits of sobriety and economy1 and imbued them with feelings of charity and benevolence40 ,it has been thought by some of our friends that quoting this remark was an endorsement by us of ,masonry and ,odd ,fellowship4 ,we wish explicitly to deny the correctness of such an inference4 ,the executive officers of this ,association have no sympathy with secret oath-bound ,societies1 and the ,,missionary1 on fitting occasions1 has spoken plainly on the subject4 ,thus in #ahgc1 the present ,secretary of the ,association wrote1 and1 with the hearty concurrence of his fellow-officers1 published1 in the ,august number of that year1 the following article3 8,attention has been called anew to this subject1 by the refusal of an ecclesiastical council at the ,west to ordain a young man to the ministry1 for what was regarded as a too tenacious adhesion to the ,lodge4 ,of the merits of that case we are not well enough informed to pronounce a judgment1 but it is clear to us that the growth and power of ,masonry is no light matter4 ,the principle of secret organization is unsuitable to a ,republican government1 and contrary to the open spirit of ,christianity4 ,among the colored people the prevalence of ,masonry would be a great evil--involving a waste of time and an expenditure of money they are little able to bear1 as well as exposing them to undue political influences1 and diverting their attention from an intelligent and pure ,christianity--their only hope4 ,our teachers and ministers at the ,south already see these effects beginning to appear1 and deprecate them40 ,nothing has occurred since that time to modify1 except to intensify1 these convictions1 and the attitude and influence of our schools and churches in the ,south have been wholly and decidedly opposed to these secret societies1 as many facts1 if necessary1 would testify4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,national ,,education--,,preparation ,,for ,,it4 ,in connection with the educational bill1 which passed the ,senate last week1 a word concerning the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,are we to have a national uprising of popular sentiment and legislative action with reference to the education of all peoples within our borders1 but especially in the ,south8 ,how signally1 in the providence of ,god1 did this ,association forecast the need1 and how wonderfully has it1 these years past1 been preparing the way4 ,if it had done no more1 it has proved to all the world1 past all cavil1 this--the cultivability of the negro1 the practicability of education for the poor blacks and also for the 8poor whites0 of the ,south4 ,its ,christian schools of all grades1 planted here and there in all the ,states1 have led the way and established beginnings of the utmost importance4 ,these schools1 by the sheer force of their own excellence1 and results so signal as to arrest universal attention1 have lived down the most desperate prejudices1 and commanded the most emphatic testimonials from all classes and from those highest in authority4 ,never has a grand ,christian enterprise shown itself more certain of good results2 never did a benevolent undertaking more remarkably manifest its self-perpetuating1 self-propagating force4 ,it has given a new complexion to the entire 8negro problem0 in this country4 ,it has successfully asserted the right of the lowliest of all citizens to share in the benefits and advantages of education4 ,the ,association1 by the largeness of its plans1 the boldness of its project1 the manifestation on the spot of its work1 by its public advocacy throughout the ,north1 has served to press constantly upon the public attention the exact nature of the great emergency in the field of popular education4 ,when were ever before the wisdom of a measureless benevolence and the audacity of a glorious faith more manifestly justified in their results8 ,but will not the new ,congressional scheme for promoting popular education in the ,states of the ,south1 render somewhat less urgent the work and the claim of the ,american ,missionary ,association8 ,by no means6 ,just the reverse is true4 ,money alone will not educate anybody4 ,if the first need be that of more money1 at least the second necessity will be that of suitable teachers4 ,precisely here1 to meet this necessity1 is seen the almost prophetic1 certainly the providential1 anticipatory work of the ,association1 getting things ready for the great stroke of truly national statesmanship now proposed4 ,to say that the ,american ,missionary ,association should have1 at once1 placed at its disposal five times its present resources to meet the new exigency1 would be to make a statement altogether temperate1 considerate and reasonable4 ,the opportunity is one that is transcendently inviting4--,rev4 ,s4 ,gilbert in ,the ,advance4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,appeal ,,of ,,the ,,exodus4 ,we have kept a close watch upon this strange inter-,state migration1 the causes of which will make a blushing page in the history of our country4 ,its sad story should be a strong appeal to all who have a heart to feel for the wrongs and sufferings of the helpless4 ,after many urgent solicitations1 and repeated investigations1 we felt1 despite all hindrances from lack of funds1 that the time had fully come for action1 when we were informed that the ,general ,association of ,kansas had appointed its ,superintendent of ,home ,missions1 the ,president of its ,college and others1 a ,committee1 to confer with us in regard to this work4 ,the ,corresponding ,secretary and the ,field ,superintendent went up from the ,national ,council to consult with this ,committee and inaugurate such a movement as might seem best4 ,at ,topeka1 which has a large colored population1 were found the ,general ,committee of ,relief1 and a committee of ,refugees1 whose duty it is to take charge of arrivals1 departures1 etc41 and watch the subsequent course of these people4 ,it was decided to purchase lots in ,tennessee ,town1 a suburb of this city1 and erect a house at a cost of #a1jjj1 under the superintendence of our old1 tried worker1 ,rev4 ,r4 ,f4 ,markham1 and we are glad to announce that1 despite the cold weather1 it is nearly ready for occupancy4 ,this is to be the home of our night school for adults under charge of ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,white1 of ,oberlin4 ,the pupils of this school are excluded from the public schools because of their age1 and because they are necessarily occupied through the day4 ,in it also will be sheltered the vigorous mission ,sunday-school which ,pastor ,blakesley's church has sustained1 and which will be under charge of ,mr4 ,a4 ,j4 ,de ,hart1 a young colored man from ,washburn ,college1 recently ordained by a council at ,cleveland1 ,ohio4 ,we have also located one of our ,southern colored preachers--a young man--in the ,second ,congregational ,church of ,lawrence1 where there is also a large colored population4 ,other points on this frontier of colored population will be kept in view4 ,of the #b1ejj which this work will cost for the year the citizens of ,topeka have raised #gjj1 and we have on hand a ,kansas fund of #dej4 ,this leaves still #a1cej to be raised as a special sum1 as this work is not provided for in the regular appropriations for the year4 ,the ,executive ,committee1 urged as it has been1 awake1 although our work has not been represented recently in the ,,missionary4 ,the weather and sickness prospectus at the beginning of the year promised to be very disastrous to our missionary labors here4 ,since our return it has rained almost consecutively for three months4 ,notwithstanding the unusual cold and rain1 our school record shows a larger attendance at the ,beach ,institute than last year4 ,it is astonishing to us teachers who come from the ,north1 where the children are sent to school clad in rubber clothing in inclement weather1 to see these boys and girls1 so ill fitted to brave the rain and cold1 prompt and punctual in their attendance at the daily sessions4 ,in my department #gj boys and girls meet daily for secular and religious instruction4 ,several of these children live at a distance of from three to six miles1 remaining without luncheon1 perhaps after an indifferent breakfast1 the entire session4 ,every day ,i see new proofs of appreciation in the parents and children3 they are beginning to realize the strenuous efforts of missionary labor for their future prosperity and eternal salvation4 ,what more encouragement can we desire--looking into their eager faces all aglow1 and seeing the quiet submission at the lack of even the necessary daily comforts that they may feed this great hungry desire for knowledge8 ,we have a weekly ,bible meeting held every ,monday afternoon immediately after school1 in the ,principal's room1 conducted by ,miss ,douglass4 ,the children are interested and the attendance is large4 ,with the ,bible in one hand and the text-book in the other1 we hope grand results for the next generation of the colored race4 ,also we have a woman's weekly prayer-meeting held at various houses4 ,would ,i could take my real1 earnest revival effort4 ,the revival seasons of blessed memory have dated from this holy week4 ,but the coming of two ,english ,evangelists1 ,james ,wharton and ,richard ,irving1 during the last days of ,october1 called for immediate action1 and we decided at once to open revival meetings1 and to engage in a united and earnest effort for the salvation of sinners4 ,while these dear brethren were resting from their voyage1 the church came together and re-consecrated themselves to ,god4 ,there was a quick and deep apprehension of the necessity of personal holiness and of self-denying service for ,christ4 ,indeed the entire month of ,october had been a month of prayerful preparation for the movement4 ,printed notices were widely distributed1 and ,christians went from house to house and invited people to come and seek the salvation of their souls4 ,from the opening night the meetings were marked by deep seriousness and the evident presence of the ,divine ,spirit4 ,the method of the ,evangelists was simple and honest4 ,no artificial means for exciting emotion were used4 ,the ,gospel was preached in its simplicity1 its purity1 and its power4 ,the sermons were heart-searching1 faithful and tender4 ,the law in its exactions and the ,gospel in its provisions and promises1 were presented night after night4 ,brother ,irving stayed with us ten days1 and ,brother ,wharton three weeks4 ,after the sermon the ,pastor took charge of the meetings1 and called the inquirers to the 8mourners' seats40 ,special appeals and prayers were offered4 ,inquirers were directed one by one how to find the ,saviour1 and to obtain peace in believing4 ,at some meetings ,christians were permitted and encouraged to speak of the love and preciousness of ,jesus2 and such a volume of testimony6 ,we could truly say1 8,lord1 it is good for us to be here40 ,as ,i recall the sheaves that were gathered in this glorious harvest ,i find much to thank ,god for4 ,in two instances both the husband and wife--all young people--were converted1 and standing side by side took the vows of the church upon them4 ,women who had struggled with manifold temptations1 and around whom the wildest storms of sorrow had gathered1 found in ,christ a refuge from the storm and the tempest4 ,young men with the hopes and possibilities of ,christian manhood before them1 humbly1 heartily1 and ,i believe1 forever1 took their position as the disciples of the ,son of ,god4 ,when ,brother ,wharton was compelled to leave us to meet an engagement in another church1 the ,pastor continued the meetings for another churches and more will yet unite themselves with us4 ,the meetings were thronged as never before4 ,crowds of young men attended constantly4 ,some of them were won for ,god--others were impressed--and matters1 and1 also1 one shrinks from bringing into the foreground human agencies in a work which1 if genuine1 must be ,divine4 ,to understand revival work here1 one must know the ordinary religious work done in the ,university4 ,varying from time to time1 the following are the means of grace enjoyed by us4 ,we have a church which is1 practically1 a part of the school4 ,there are three services on the ,sabbath--a preaching service1 a ,sunday-school1 and a prayer meeting4 ,during the week there are school devotions in the morning and family devotions in the evening1 and also one meeting for prayer4 ,upon all these attendance is required4 ,many other meetings are held voluntarily by the students1 conducted frequently by an instructor4 ,there is a ,christian ,association of the young men and one of the young women1 meeting once a week1 or oftener4 ,the ,society for the ,evangelization of ,africa holds a meeting once a month1 and every ,sunday morning since the departure of our missionaries to ,africa1 a meeting has been held to pray for them and their cause4 ,besides these stated meetings1 there is a large amount of personal religious work done in a private way1 to lead the unconverted to ,christ4 ,opportunities are sought for conversation and prayer with individuals alone4 ,as employees of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 we feel ourselves bound to labor1 as we can1 for the salvation of our students4 ,we try to keep it before us continually that we should aim at nothing less than their conversion4 ,and we seek to impress it upon all1 that the ,institution is entirely the ,lord's1 built with ,his money1 kept by ,his care1 and dedicated to ,his service4 ,we are sustained by the charities of ,god's people1 given for the sake of ,his cause4 ,we remember the way in which our wants have been met1 in the use of the ,jubilee ,singers and by other means4 ,the place whereon we stand is holy ground4 ,in 8times of refreshing0 the ordinary means of grace have been quickened into greater life1 and other means have been used as the ,spirit of ,god seemed to direct4 ,the morning and evening devotions have at times been turned into revival meetings1 and extra meetings for prayer and labor with inquirers have been instituted4 ,in a few cases the work of the school has been suspended and the day given to religious meetings2 but usually the ordinary work has gone on4 ,persons under too deep conviction to attend to aught else1 have been allowed and advised to wait upon ,god1 and suitable persons have been permitted to wait with them4 ,occasionally scenes have transpired not to be forgotten nor to be described--the tears1 the sighs1 the groans1 the bowed or prostrate form--and the after unspeakable joy6 ,as time has gone on1 whether for better or worse1 the emotional has diminished4 ,we have never sought to produce excitement1 nor have we sought rudely to crush it out when it came spontaneously1 but to quiet it off by indirect means1 a thing always soon successful4 ,doubtless clearer views of truth are doing away with that frenzy of religious excitement which has so largely prevailed1 unbalancing the reason and prostrating the body4 ,we find it necessary to follow a revival with oft-repeated instructions as to the doctrines and duties of ,christianity4 ,the young converts need much loving and wise watchcare4 ,they are exposed to many dangers1 and have nearly everything to learn1 except that they are the ,lord's and he is theirs4 ,some years in the history of ,fisk ,university have been years of great barrenness in spiritual things1 but none of entire unfruitfulness4 ,yet long and sorely have we been made to cry unto ,god1 and humble ourselves before ,him4 ,other years are precious in our memories because of ,god's hopefully and more brisk than ever before1 notwithstanding that our population has within the three years dropped from fifty to thirty-five thousand4 ,merchants are reaping a rich harvest1 and all kinds of labor find employment and fair pay1 interrupted somewhat for the past month by severe cold and continued rains1 which have also seriously damaged the ungathered cotton crop4 ,what would you say to ninety inches rainfall in eleven months8 ,this is the amount reported by the signal service observer at ,vicksburg for this year up to ,december #a4 ,no one now thinks of ,memphis as a failure2 what with a unique and almost perfect system of sewerage nearly completed1 and what with a growing wholesale trade and many permanent improvements1 both public and private1 a new ,memphis1 indeed1 must soon replace the old4 ,school opened in ,october with a full attendance and every promise of a most successful year4 ,our rooms for industrial instruction are now finished and ready for use4 ,the missionary at ,amoy1 ,china1 has taken pastoral charge of the ,congregational ,church in that place4 ,it starts well1 and engages the interest not only of the ,chinese1 but also of the better element among the ,christian people of that town1 to a greater degree1 ,i believe1 than ever before4 ,of the two new schools1 one is in ,oakland1 occupying an apartment kindly granted for the purpose by the ,pacific ,theological ,seminary1 situated about #a miles from the school already sustained in rooms supplied by the ,first ,congregational ,church4 ,it is near the ,plymouth ,avenue ,church1 and will1 we trust1 be taken under its wing4 ,miss ,maria ,w4 ,bye is its faithful and devoted teacher4 ,the other new school is at ,point ,pedro1 the ,chinese fishing village of which some account was given in the ,december ,,missionary4 ,on visiting the place ,i found it to consist of six or seven distinct villages situated on the shore of little coves1 and separated from each other by points of greater or less altitude jutting out boldly into the ,bay4 ,the population1 estimated at about #fjj1 is thus divided into little groups of1 say1 #ajj people each2 the distance from the nearest to the most remote being not less than two miles4 ,it calls for two schools1 and affording1 as it does1 a field for missionary service among women and children as well as men1 it needs at least one teacher able to give not only evenings1 but the daytime also to the work4 ,we are at present feeling our way under conditions quite different from those in any of our older schools1 praying that the wisdom from above may save us from the mistakes into which our own unaided counsel would plunge us certainly2 and that1 as we learn how to reach these dark and scattered multitudes1 we may have means adequate to the task4 8,as thy days so shall thy strength be40 ,the ,money ,question4--,many who count themselves specially prudent find no room for the exercise of faith in matters of cash4 ,but ,i have not so read either
