those whose praise we repeat1 are no longer strangers4 ,in place of some of the usual reports written by our teachers1 or friends who have gone down to look into our work1 having the greatest sympathy with it1 we gather up what is said by the native whites of the ,south1 many of whom have been most interested attendants upon all the anniversary exercises of the schools contiguous to them4 ,we find no fuller or more sympathetic or enthusiastic reports in the ,southern papers of the schools for whites than of ours for the colored people4 ,we1 therefore1 ask the special attention of our readers to these reports this year1 as showing the estimate the ,southern press and people are putting upon our work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,dr4 ,rufus ,anderson4--,seldom have nature and grace1 culture and varied became permanently connected with the ,a4 ,b4 ,c4 ,f4 ,m4 in #ahbb1 and since #ahcb has largely shaped the policy of that ,society4 ,for more than half a century1 he has been in the closest sympathy with the ,divine ,master in ,his effort to save the world1 and it has often seemed to us that his face reflected much of the sweet longings of the ,master for its accomplishment4 ,it were sad to be forever on a journey1 and never reach home1 and so1 while the church feels a sense of loss and bereavement because of his removal from its councils1 we yet rejoice over his beautiful and useful life1 been greatly afflicted1 and much weakened1 by the death of ,deacon ,isler1 a ,christian of rare development in all that graces ,christian character4 ,it is only five years since he came to ,christ1 and it now seems to his associates that these five years have been spent under a premonition that what he did must be done quickly4 ,his consecration was without reserve2 nothing was too hard for him to undertake2 no obstacle turned him aside from the duty which lay before him4 ,with no patience for those who would accept help they did not need1 he combined the purpose and constant effort to bear in his strong arms those who did need it4 ,while1 as he said1 he 8had his rathers10 and would like to work for others1 yet he was willingly and joyfully in the hands of ,jesus4 ,much comforted by his wife's reply to his question whether she could give him up1 8,yes1 all ,i want is ,jesus10 he passed gently and sweetly away2 a man of rare strength1 whose death is a great loss1 but1 being dead1 he supplemented by an incident which must find place for brief mention4 ,when it became evident that disease was fastening upon him1 the best physician of the city was called in and put in charge of the case4 ,he became acquainted with the noble life of his humble patient1 took the deepest interest in him1 and attended him as faithfully as if he had been a wealthy and influential white man4 ,when one of the teachers1 who had made herself responsible for the bill1 called upon the doctor for it1 he said3 8,i have no charge against you4 ,i only wish ,i could have done more for so worthy a man2 ,i shall be glad to give my professional aid to as many such beneficiaries as ,i can40 ,straws are small things1 but they indicate the set of the tide4 ,facts multiply which abundantly prove that mutually helpful relations are being established between the two races on the basis of recognized equal civil liberty4 ,the ignis fatuus of social equality between them might with profit be remitted to the realm of dreams and fantasms1 and wait the establishment of such between members of the same race4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,dallas 7,texas7 ,times relates an unparalleled instance which occurred at the last term of the ,ellis ,co4 ,district ,court4 ,a negro was tried and found guilty of conspiracy to murder4 ,his defence had been strong but unavailing4 ,the judge overruled a motion for a new trial1 as no error of law could be alleged and the evidence seemed strong4 ,when asked what he had to say1 the prisoner answered that he could say nothing which would change the sentence the court was about to pronounce upon him1 but he would like to speak a few words to his own people in the court-room4 ,leave being given1 he began in a slow1 quiet way to review the case4 ,he dissected the evidence in a most masterly way1 showing its inconsistencies and contradictions2 and gradually warmed up until he burst forth into a strain of impassioned eloquence which carried audience and court with him4 ,when he finished1 the judge said1 8,sam1 ,i thought you guilty2 ,i don't believe so now1 and will set aside the judgment overruling your motion for a new trial1 and give you another chance40 ,the attorney for the prosecution then dismissed the case4 ,he was an uneducated1 common field hand2 and yet there are some who think the negro incapable of doing anything higher than hoeing cotton under a white man's supervision4 ,when ,gen4 ,howard was in ,andover1 ,mass41 the other week1 visiting his son in ,phillips ,academy1 he was introduced to a colored man1 who asked him if he by sixty-two citizens of ,bracken ,co41 ,ky41 with a peremptory demand that he should leave the county4 ,one of these1 an influential and wealthy man1 has recently called on him and requested him to give an address on education for the benefit of an institution which the citizens of that county have built4 ,this building is used as an academy4 ,the school is flourishing1 having a large number of pupils and three teachers4 ,the door is opening wider and wider1 while the number of adversaries grows smaller3 many of them deserting1 and becoming co-laborers with us in this work4 99 99 99 99 99 fault to find with the grog-shops1 and it may be inferred the latter had no complaint to make of the churches4 ,but there has been a disturbance4 ,some #d1jjj of the whites have enlisted to fight this greatest curse and nuisance of our day1 while the blacks are also #gjj strong in the same army4 ,the labors of ,rev4 ,h4 ,e4 ,brown1 in connection with his revival work in that city1 have greatly aided ,mr4 ,markham's efforts in this direction2 and so the blacks and the whites are making common cause against the common enemy1 just as if their interests were identical in whatever concerns the the missionaries in ,alabama said that many of the colored people 8declare plainly they do not believe in ,bible religion40 ,they believe in visions and dreams4 ,another missionary1 writing from a section still under the spiritual guidance of the old preachers1 says3 8,these people have had preaching1 but no instruction4 ,the heart and conscience have not been touched4 ,the older people will come out of a religious meeting and steal a hog for their supper4 ,a white man said to me1 #8,when these darkies are going to have a camp-meeting barbecue1 ,i am pretty sure to lose two or three heads of cattle from my herd4' ,one very pious brother1 engaged in prayer at a camp-meeting1 heard some one in the crowd say1 #8,here comes a ,united ,states marshal1' when the brother rose from his knees1 ,president ,lincoln1 declaring the slaves of the ,united ,states free1 than in all the past40 ,who can be so blind that he does not see the relation of these two facts8 ,today1 eight ,european governments have from one to three exploring parties penetrating that vast continent for various purposes4 ,the negro slave of ,america has become a free man1 has the ballot in his hand1 and the nation is under bonds to fit him for citizenship4 ,he is restive in his present position4 ,he has an instinct for home which does not find its full satisfaction either on the cotton lands of ,mississippi1 nor on the corn fields of ,kansas or ,indiana4 ,what it all means1 ,god in ,his own time will fully unfold4 ,meantime1 the pressure of necessity is upon us to save ourselves from being trampled to death under the feet of these ignorant voters1 led to the polls by unscrupulous demagogues4 ,when we have done this1 we shall have fitted an instrument for ,god's own right hand2 whether for use in ,america or in ,africa chiefly1 we know not1 and it matters not4 99 99 99 99 99 ,john ,sykes4--,the editor of the ,independent1 on a recent excursion into ,virginia1 met with1 what we may begin to call1 a representative negro1 for ,john ,sykes is not so much alone today as ,james' celebrated solitary horseman of thirty years ago4 ,he is the owner of #aga acres of land near ,lake ,drummond1 all paid for1 and stocked with horse1 mule1 several cows1 pigs1 sheep1 and fowl4 ,he was on his way to ,hampton to hear the valedictory address of his son1 with great expectations as to what he should see and learn as to new methods of farming practiced on the great farm connected with the school4 ,his daughter is to take her turn at the school next year1 to be followed by another son4 ,since he bought his land1 eight years ago1 twenty-five other colored men1 his neighbors1 have purchased1 and paid for1 land in lots of from #e to #ej acres each1 while some thirty others have contracts for similar lots4 ,all this within eight years1 and along with it has been a progress in education and general thrift which is most hopeful4 ,the editor met four graduates on the same boat with ,mr4 ,sykes1 on their way back to ,hampton to attend the graduating exercises1 8whose intelligence and gentlemanliness were most marked40 ,he adds as the result of his observations1 what a recent excursion into the ,south enables us to confirm1 8,in ,virginia1 the colored people are rapidly rising in intelligence1 in comfort1 and in wealth2 and the feeling of the whites toward them is quite as kindly as could be expected40 ,and the contrast suggested is one that it would be well for those who are impatient of the negroes' slow progress to follow out to the minutest detail4 ,he writes3 8,it is impossible for a visitor from the ,north not to compare their position as a race with that of our ancestors two hundred years ago1 when starting an ,american civilization4 ,the ,southern negroes have probably as much comfort about them as most of our early forefathers1 as good houses1 as good furniture1 as many cattle3 but they have not the intelligent educated upper class1 which founded our great colleges and which molded our whole population4 ,this influence they must get from abroad4 ,they need it1 and they appreciate and want it2 and no more needed and fruitful work can be done by our benevolent people than to provide the ,southern negroes with ,christian education40 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,memphis ,avalanche says that a most interesting and entertaining feature of the evening exercises1 connected with the close of the ,le ,moyne ,school1 was the address to the graduating class by ,judge ,j4 ,o4 ,pierce1 which was scholarly1 thoughtful and eloquent4 ,and it adds of the school that 8it is an honor to the educational institutions of ,memphis4 ,it has done much to forward the cause of education among the colored population1 and the good results of its labors are apparent in every direction4 ,institutions of this class cannot be too much encouraged40 ,it is proof that we have entered upon a new era when the principal of one of our schools is constrained to say1 what ,prof4 ,steele1 of ,le ,moyne ,institute1 does in a card to the editors of the ,memphis ,appeal3 8,i cannot leave the city for the summer without first thanking you1 and1 through the ,appeal1 also the other eminent gentlemen1 who have1 during the year past1 given us so much aid and encouragement in our work among the colored people of this city and vicinity4 ,the course of lectures which these gentlemen have provided has1 ,i am certain1 accomplished much good in many ways4 99 99 99 ,in this1 as in every other respect1 a better day is near at hand4 99 99 99 ,it has been our aim1 in quietly doing our work here1 to hasten forward this day of better feeling1 and after years of patient toil1 and amid many discouragements1 we hope that at last a day is not far distant when our work shall gain the approval and aid of all good people1 or even when we may relinquish our efforts and hand over our work to those here who should be1 and who are1 ,i am convinced1 becoming greatly interested in it4 ,again1 in behalf of the faculty and students of this school1 and in behalf of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 which has1 in the past sixteen years1 expended millions of dollars in education at the ,south1 ,i thank the ,appeal and other papers and gentlemen for their interest and encouragement in our work40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,great ,,need4 ,we have vast opportunities4 ,our schools are overflowing with the best selected material we have ever had4 ,the fields are white for the harvest1 much of which must rot ungathered1 unless a large number of laborers are sent into the field2 and these are not wanting4 ,the day of romance in negro teaching is past1 and there is nothing in it that appeals to the mere sentimentalist4 ,the day of danger is past1 and martyrs are not called for2 but there is a demand for honest1 earnest ,christian educators1 who find ample field for all their best gifts1 and there is no difficulty in procuring these of the very first order4 ,there is1 also1 much intelligent appreciation of the vital importance of this work1 in its relations both to the life of our nation and the kingdom of ,christ4 ,what is needed now1 and most pressingly1 is a clear apprehension on the part of churches and individuals of the relation which their gifts bear to these civil and spiritual results4 ,it is largely a question of money given1 or money withheld4 8,prayers are needed80 ,certainly6 ,prayer1 not to move the ,lord so that ,he shall favor the work1 and prosper the efforts of those engaged in it1 but prayer that shall shake selfish plans of expenditure which are so large that nothing is left over for this work2 prayer that shall confirm1 and give definite shape to vague desires that the means shall be provided2 prayer that selfishness may not throttle benevolence4 ,when this prayer has become fervent and effectual1 the result will be money1 which1 we assert again1 is our present great need4 ,the ,association was urged forward1 by the zeal of the churches at the last ,annual ,meeting1 to enlarged plans for the year1 requiring enlarged gifts from the churches4 ,this enlargement on our part has been made2 it is necessary that yours shall now correspond1 or disaster will follow4 ,owing to the fact that our schools close in the month of ,june1 and our accounts with our workers must be settled1 our need is specially great at this time4 ,the long spell of dry weather has affected our collections in the country churches2 and there is danger that we shall suffer1 as our benevolent societies do in the presidential year1 from absorption of public interest in political affairs2 and so we must urge again upon our friends the fact that our great and most pressing need is 8money40 99 99 99 99 99 this ,association and the progress of the proposed ,arthington ,mission4 ,we have considered ,mr4 ,arthington's proffered aid1 and have sounded the call for men and means4 ,expectations have been caused by unexpected obstacles1 and such sacrifices of health and life have been experienced1 that we have felt constrained to proceed with the greatest caution4 ,the courage and faith of ,god's people may be sustained for a time by displays of enterprise1 daring1 and readiness to give one's life for a good cause4 ,indeed1 such exhibitions are essential2 but a time comes when nothing will satisfy but solid success4 ,our earnest prayer from the beginning has been1 that we might be led to enter upon work in the ,nile ,basin1 if at all1 in a manner that would give promise of great and permanent usefulness4 ,we have1 therefore1 endeavored during the past year to gather information from every available source1 and1 especially1 from persons who have been engaged in the service of the ,egyptian ,government4 ,in this1 we have been fortunate4 ,col4 ,c4 ,c4 ,long1 of ,new ,york1 who visited ,mtesa's kingdom on the ,nile1 has kindly responded to our calls upon him1 whenever questions of interest about which he was informed1 have arisen4 ,more than a year ago1 we submitted to him in writing a list of thirty-nine questions for the purpose of obtaining information on every matter of interest in connection with the ,mission4 ,to these questions1 he responded fully in writing4 ,last autumn1 ,col4 ,h4 ,g4 ,prout1 who had served for two years and a half on ,gordon ,pasha's staff in ancient ,ethiopia1 established himself in ,new ,york4 ,at our request1 he gave us several interviews of great interest and profit4 ,during his stay in ,central ,africa1 he had carefully surveyed the route from ,souakim to ,berber1 of which we have a full report4 ,he had also surveyed the countries of ,kordofan and ,darfur1 after which1 with a view to the acceptance of the governorship of the ,upper ,nile ,basin1 he proceeded to ,mrooli1 by way of the ,white ,nile and the ,albert ,lake1 traversing the country we propose to occupy4 ,he kindly reviewed with us the responses given by ,colonel condition of slaves4 #d4--;,it would be the part of wisdom to locate our first stations where the people are already protected by the ,egyptian ,government1 as their flag would be sure to follow if new fields were opened1 and with it1 temporary disturbance4 ,pressure should be brought to bear upon the ,khedive for obtaining permission to navigate the ,nile with steam-boats1 and for freedom and protection while pursuing missionary work at the points selected4 #e4--,while it would be desirable to commence at once1 for many reasons1 among the ,obbo and ,latooka1 south-east of ,gondokoro1 yet it would probably be the part of prudence to plant our first station near the mouth of the ,sobat1 where the country is rolling and well-wooded1 and the people of the ,nouer tribe are friendly to missionary endeavors4 ,from this point1 there is frequent and not difficult communication with ,khartum1 which is a sufficient base of supplies4 ,from the mouth of the ,sobat1 mission stations may be ,presbyterian1 of ,america1 who have established #ce mission stations in ,lower ,egypt1 gives promise of a good measure of protection and co-operation4 ,although the ,mohammedans as such1 and1 especially1 the slave-dealers1 are sure to look with disfavor upon ,protestant missions in the ,nile ,basin2 yet1 ,american and ,english influence is sufficient to assure such toleration as is needful1 while the real heathen1 to whom we hope to minister1 have no political or other reasons for discouraging our efforts4 ,from the information gained during the year1 we are encouraged to believe that as soon as the means1 now being gathered in ,great ,britain and ,america1 is sufficient to warrant us in inaugurating the ,arthington ,mission1 we can safely and wisely enter upon the work4 ,the amount to be made up is a little less than #ae1jjj4 ,may the ,lord hasten ,his work in ,his own good time4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,generic ,,and ,,the ,,individual ,,negro4 ,in commenting upon the evidence in the ,whittaker case1 one of our most fair-minded weeklies says3 8,should his guilt be finally established1 the act will be a blunder no less than a crime4 ,whatever his purpose1 the necessary result of his conduct will be injurious to #8his people4'0 ,this is ambiguous4 ,whittaker is three-fourths part ,caucasian1 and we are unwilling to take1 as being a part of his people1 even #a_/df1jjj1jjj part of his crime if he is guilty1 and do utterly refuse to be hurt by it4 ,if1 on the other hand1 his one-fourth part negro blood so dominates these three-fourths1 that he must be accounted a negro1 then grave apprehensions are excited4 ,that he has1 as we go to press1 passed so many of his examinations successfully under all the difficulties of his position1 we must conclude is due to the modicum of negro blood in his composite nature2 a fact which foreshadows the supremacy of his people in our land4 ,but1 seriously1 we do most earnestly and decidedly protest against this idea that the negro is not an individual but a fraction of an unit4 ,we believe the certain result will be injurious to his people1 but this will not be a necessary result4 ,were a white student guilty of such a crime and blunder1 it would be simply ridiculous to say that the necessary result was injurious to 8his people10 meaning the white race4 ,there are reported cases of self-inflicted injuries of this kind4 ,who believes for a moment that1 because a wife mutilates herself1 as in a case reported1 she has brought discredit upon all our wives8 ,we treat ,indians and ,negroes in classes as if it inhered1 by eternal necessity1 in the nature of things1 that their individuality should be ignored1 disregarded1 or trampled upon4 ,we are a great ways off from the true and right basis of action when we pass by the personality of any one with all his inherent rights and responsibilities1 and think of him and treat him only as belonging to a general class4 ,it may be1 that until his rights are respected by the public at large1 the negro must receive special attention as the case of ,whittaker has received2 but1 so long as his treatment is special because he belongs to a class1 it is evident that the treatment of the class to which he belongs is all wrong4 ,whittaker's innocence or guilt pertains to himself alone1 and should in no way affect the question as to the standing or character of his people4 ,the feeling that it must necessarily affect them is one phase of the sentiment which has isolated and made intolerable the life of this poor fellow at ,west ,point4 ,personally he appears to be a very fine fellow1 but the condition of 8his people0 has necessarily--so these young cadets think1 and evidently many others who are not in the callow softness of their cadetship agree with them--affected him1 rendering him unfit for comradeship1 or even decent treatment4 ,the questions1 7any one of which is deemed a final and conclusive estoppel to all argument as to the right of the negro to ,christian courtesy71 8,would you sleep with a negro80 8,would you associate with a negro80 8,would you marry a negro80--these are simply absurd4 ,whether we would do any1 or all of these1 should be answered as in the case of any person of whatever race1 in view of considerations and qualifications that are purely individual1 with no reference whatever to ,ham1 or to his or her people4 ,we associate with friends because of personal qualities1 not because they are white or yellow4 ,we apprehend that in some schools for the education of colored people1 the treatment of the pupil is special because of his color4 ,he is made to feel that he is a special case1 whatever the advantage or disadvantage of the fact1 its honor or dishonor4 ,he is a negro1 and not simply a human being4 ,he is to stand or fall as a part of 8his people0 rather than by his own individuality and personal character4 ,we say again1 with great emphasis1 that we protest against the whole so-called necessity of the case as false and absurd2 as indicative of abnormal sentiments which must be eradicated before right results can be even sought1 much less reached4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,third ,,stage ,,of ,,our ,,experiment4 ,we have reached1 and1 in some of the ,states1 have distinctly entered upon1 the third stage of our experiment of negro suffrage4 ,in glancing at these1 we shall be simply historical1 not critical2 shall set down naught in malice1 but with simple truth as we have understood it4 ,the fragments of the late ,confederacy resumed their autonomy as parts of this nation almost wholly under direction of the negro voter4 ,there seemed to be a double necessity that he should be armed with the ballot1 that he might defend himself against his old master who showed unmistakable evidence of his purpose virtually to re-enslave him1 and that he might maintain the political ascendency of his friends over his master's old friends4 ,in this first stage we had1 as the political representative of the ,south1 what is historically known as the carpet-bagger--an immigrant elected by the ,freedman1 hated and opposed by the native white2 and legislation which burdened some of the ,states to the verge of endurance was the result4 ,the second stage was reached when the influence of the general ,government was withdrawn from the ,south1 and control passed again into the hands of the native whites4 ,the alien was remanded to obscurity1 or found the climate of the ,north more congenial1 and the negro was mightily prevailed upon to forego his right to vote4 ,this gave us what is generally regarded as the reign of ,bourbonism4 ,the white vote of the ,south became solid1 and the opposition was almost silenced4 ,we state the fact without commenting upon it or arguing from it4 ,this result we might easily have inferred from what had gone before4 ,the instinct of self-preservation1 it would seem1 must have compelled such a united front against the outrageous robbery to which the ,south had been subjected by ignorant and dishonest legislators4 ,but now we have entered upon the third stage of this experiment4 ,the solid ,south is broken1 not by federal assaults1 or through the ambition of carpet-baggers1 but by native greed of power4 ,the irrepressible conflict between the 8ins0 and the 8outs0 hurls to the ground the fabric which seemed to the ,south so fair and so strong4 ,the hero of a hundred battles leads the ignorant negro to the polls1 deluded by lies and false promises1 displaces one-armed ,confederates who had fought under him1 to make room for a low grade of negro politicians1 trails the honor of a once proud old commonwealth in the dust1 and dissipates forever the fond delusion of a solid white ,south4 ,we have had the negro placed in authority for a brief day by federal power2 then by a certain reaction driven from the legislative hall1 and in many cases from the ballot box1 by the outraged white restored to power4 ,now we are to see him debauched and led to the polls by political demagogues1 in a desperate and most demoralizing struggle for office4 ,which stage has been1 or promises to be the worst8 ,concerning this there would doubtless be difference of opinion1 according to the latitude of those who express it4 ,to the ,southern white1 nothing could seem more terrible than exposure to the insult and burden of negro legislation2 not simply because it is ignorant1 but chiefly because it is negro legislation4 ,to the average citizen of the ,north1 the stories told of wrongs and cruelties perpetrated by the ,southerners in their efforts to deliver themselves from this1 to them1 intolerable degradation1 have seldom been eclipsed in horror and utter fiendishness1 and nothing could be worse than that a solid ,south be maintained4 ,but to us who have been trying to grasp1 in order that we may solve1 the great problem involved in the negro's relation to our national life1 and the kingdom of our ,lord1 it seems evident that we are just beginning to get a glimpse of the danger we are called to face1 and with which we must grapple4 ,hitherto we have chased the bear1 and the chase has had its dangers2 but now the bear has turned to chase us4 ,we can no longer calmly discuss the question1 8,what shall we do with the negro80 but it becomes one of vital interest1 8,what will he do with us80 ,we have put a bludgeon into a giant's hands1 with which he will beat out our brains1 unless we soothe and exorcise the devil that is in him4 ,there is this one way out of our danger1 and there is none other4 ,we have been bold enough to attempt the experiment1 staking the life of our ,republic upon the issue2 let us be wise enough to supply1 with all promptness and fidelity1 the conditions which shall ensure its success4 ,while the statesmanship which thrust the problem upon us has given itself no concern whatever as to the issue1 ,christian charity has shown that a blessed solution is possible4 ,our schools have proved that of the ignorant slave a wise and useful citizen can be made4 ,the path of safety has been clearly pointed out2 now let the means for achieving this safety be supplied4 ,we believe the nation ought to do it4 ,we know the patriot and ,christian must do it1 or this third will prove to be the final stage in this experiment1 not only of equal negro citizenship in a free ,republic1 but of ,republican government itself4 ,,african ,,notes4 --,africa is the most profoundly interesting of missionary lands1 because it is ,god's greatest providential mystery4 ,great in our ,southern conferences last spring1 the brethren1 colored and white1 were bemoaning the small numbers and slow progress of our churches4 ,a ,baptist minister who was present1 and who is engaged in this educational work1 turned the tide by stating that there were advantages1 for the present1 in that state of things1 and that his denomination suffered somewhat from the embarrassment of numbers4 ,he said that he had been a farmer's boy1 and that when at the tail end of a steam threshing machine for shoving away the straw1 if for only a short time his associate stepped away1 he found himself unable to keep up with the thresher1 and covered down by the accumulation4 ,so they were sometimes bothered in handling their great numbers by way of discipline and effort at moral elevation4 ,there example1 we are doing more to help the old churches in their eliminating process than we could in any other way4 ,that same article in the ,recorder1 from which ,i have quoted1 shows this4 ,the editor also sets down the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 as the greatest rival of the ,a4 ,m4 ,e41 and no doubt rejoices in this provoking of his church to love and to good works4 ,but our churches1 if they would attain to much of this helpfulness1 must gain it upon the standard of intelligence and of ,christian character1 without the risks of wildness and superstition4 ,and so1 if ,god be with us1 if we be humble and spiritually minded in our work1 by and by we may expect large accessions of members4 ,the president of a ,baptist ,colored ,university1 himself a ,new ,england educator1 remarked to me1 a while ago1 that he could see that in twenty-five years the ,congregationalists would have a large church-work among the ,freedmen1 simply as the result of their educational process4 ,our young pastors1 who have not as yet the stimulus of the large congregations of some other communions1 must remember that the influence of their churches is not measured by numbers1 and that if they secure quality1 this may go further than quantity4 ,but1 as it is1 our church-work is not destitute of encouragement now in regard to numbers4 ,fifteen years ago there was not a colored ,congregationalist in all the ,south1 except in the two ancient white ,congregational churches of ,charleston1 ,s4 ,c41 and of ,liberty ,co41 ,ga4 ,the system itself was utterly unknown1 as it is to this day1 except where it has crept in since the war4 ,the experiment1 in one single locality1 of swallowing down the old-time churches1 proved a failure1 and taught us a lesson4 ,the only gain has been by the slow process of enlightenment and of assimilation1 mainly by the ,christian-school process4 ,a high official in the ,m4 ,e4 ,church said of us3 8,you can afford to wait for the youth2 we cannot40 ,he was right4 ,that great war1 could not fail to recognize the value of the work done by the noble educational institutions which the ,american ,missionary ,association has brought into existence through the ,south4 ,this thankful feeling was deepened as the students took up the parts assigned them4 ,their addresses were not mere essays1 but the expression of their opinions on practical1 vital themes1 concerning the welfare of their race4 ,these utterances were marked with rare good sense1 a freedom from bitterness for past or present ill-treatment1 and a hopeful courage for the future4 ,more than once some expression unexpectedly pathetic1 or forgiving1 or consecrated1 brought tears to the eyes of those who heard4 ,the exercises of the students were followed by admirable addresses from some of the ,schurz considered at length the experiment of ,indian education1 which is being tried at ,hampton1 and showed why it might succeed now when it had not in the past4 ,governor ,long1 of ,massachusetts1 referred to the presence of these educational institutions in the ,south as one of the most important results of the war4 ,ex-,governor ,rice1 of ,massachusetts1 regarded the ,institution at ,hampton as the natural development of advancing civilization1 which is breaking down the barriers of the races and bringing all nationalities together as brethren4 ,the concurrent testimony of these speakers1 and the manifest conviction of the visitors present1 was that ,hampton is doing a grand work4 ,its diversified departments are conducted with such careful attention to detail1 with such consecrated1 self-denying enthusiasm1 with such genius in teaching1 and with such faith in ,god1 on the part of its principal1 ,gen4 ,armstrong1 and his corps of teachers1 gathered from the best families of the appreciate the self-restraint of one who says no more than what has just been said4 ,the ,hampton ,institute has settled two or three questions very satisfactorily4 ,from the experience of this ,institution1 it is plain that it is quite possible to combine industrial with intellectual and religious education without injury to any one of these branches of knowledge4 ,nothing is more prominent to a superficial observation than the industrial side of ,hampton4 ,the saw-mill1 which since ,september last has cut over a million feet of lumber1 the knitting-room1 which has produced this year #ab1jjj dozen mittens for a ,boston firm1 the market-garden1 from which have been sent this spring thirty barrels of peas a day to ,baltimore1 and from which have been raised peas and asparagus1 together amounting in value to #a1ejj1 the ice house1 in which are stored #ahj tons of ice1 the industrial room1 where are made the students' uniforms1 the cooking school1 in which the girls are taught the culinary art1 the printing office1 from which is issued monthly 8,the ,southern ,workman10 the shoe shop1 the blacksmith's shop1 the wheelwright's shop1 the carpenter's shop1 the repair shop1 the brick-yard1 which has supplied all the bricks used on the buildings of the ,institution1 the #f1jjj barn1 where fine blooded stock is kept1 the farm of #ccj acres--these departments of activity1 wonderful for their variety and completeness1 are steadily training the students and the inhabitants of the surrounding region in ways of industry4 ,but this is not all1 nor the principal benefit1 the students receive4 ,if we may judge from a hasty inspection of classes1 from the scope and skillful expression of thought in the graduating exercises1 and from the testimony of teachers1 a thorough and sufficiently extended education in all mental departments is given4 ,best of all1 as the crown no less than the beginning of wisdom1 the students1 entering the school without special religious impressions1 seldom leave it without becoming devoted ,christians4 ,the result of the combination of industrial with other forms of training1 is seen in the evident union in ,hampton students of hard good sense with scholarly intelligence and unostentatious piety4 ,another question is most satisfactorily settled1 whether it is possible to educate the ,negro and the ,indian together4 ,on graduation day1 in sight of the audience1 was a stand on which rested a fragment from the building recently burned4 ,it was a mass of red and black bricks cemented together1 and prettily draped with vines4 ,if this was designed to be emblematic1 it was truthfully so4 ,the red and the black races do harmonize most happily at ,hampton1 and cultivate together the graces of character4 ,they are a mutual help to each other1 especially the ,negro1 as farther advanced in civilization1 to the ,indian4 ,their dispositions supplement each other4 ,the ,negro is enthusiastic1 demonstrative and dependent1 the ,indian reserved1 bashful and self-contained4 ,each finds in the other1 qualities that he needs and that attract him4 ,as a consequence1 there is great friendliness between the two races4 ,when the colored boys were asked if any of their number were willing to room with the ,indians1 that the latter might learn to speak ,english more readily1 there was no lack of volunteers4 ,and no one can doubt the kindly feeling pervading the school1 who has seen1 as we have1 ,indian and ,negro boys walking together1 or chatting on the green with arms lovingly about each others' necks4 ,other questions1 such as the wisdom of educating the ,indians away from their tribes1 or of the coeducation of the sexes1 we have no time to discuss4 ,it is sufficient to say that the experience of ,hampton is thus far entirely satisfactory in these regards4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,fisk ,,university4 ,examinations--,ode to ,jubilee ,bell--,dr4 ,willcox' ,address--,prosperous ,year4 ,the ,nashville been hopefully converted4 ,there was a good day-school at this place1 and also one at ,freetown1 a hundred and fifty miles north1 which had been kept up for twenty-five years by the ,church ,missionary ,society of ,england4 ,my mother has often told me that the missionaries were very much pleased because the ,mendi boys passed a better examination than the boys at ,freetown1 who had had all the advantages of that sea-port city4 ,mr4 ,burton1 a missionary who went to ,africa from ,connecticut1 while traveling up the ,bar-groo river noticed a fall of water in a wooded country1 and determined to establish an industrial mission at that point4 ,there was no saw-mill on the coast1 so ,mr4 ,burton put up buildings for a mill2 some one gave him the necessary machinery1 and he opened a station and named it 8,avery40 ,a church and some dwelling houses were built1 and a community of people gathered who bought logs1 converted them into lumber1 and conveyed it to the coast for sale4 ,mendi are the only ones in the ,mendi country proper1 where there are about #b1jjj1jjj people4 ,there are ,sunday-schools on the ,sherbro ,island1 but the people there belong mostly to the ,sherbro tribe4 ,our ,sunday-schools constitute one of the means by which our young ,african friends acquire the simple truths taught by our blessed ,saviour4 ,i do not know how it is1 if ,i am in the wrong1 pardon me1 but ,i do believe it is much more difficult to teach in ,africa than in ,america1 because we have no books in the ,mendi language and the children know but little ,english4 ,our ,sunday-schools in comparison with those in ,america are very small4 ,the bell for school rings at #b o'clock1 and the teachers go round to the houses where they fear the children do not care to come1 and bring them to the school4 ,before bringing them in to the ,sunday-school1 a shirt is given to each scholar1 as many of them wear no garments at home4 ,this is made of ,english cloth and supplied by the missionaries2 when they return from school1 it is laid aside to be worn the next time the school assembles4 ,the instruction is mostly oral--the teacher asking the pupils questions and then requiring them to repeat the answer until they are able to say it4 ,a good deal of time is spent in singing1 as the children readily learn the words and music of the ,gospel songs1 even though they do not understand the meaning of the ,english words4 ,they are very fond of singing indeed1 and the missionaries listen to their songs with much delight1 and give them a great deal of credit for them4 ,as some of the children never attend day-school1 the alphabet is taught in the ,sunday-school4 ,we have a portion of the ,bible1 and a few hymns1 translated into the ,mendi1 and hope some time to have books in the language1 so that greater progress can be made4 ,we have some active members who go about into the small villages and act as home missionaries among the people4 ,these frequently bring in new scholars to the mission3 and what do you think causes the increase of our members1 more than most any other circumstance8 ,some kind friends in ,america and ,england have been sending us illustrated papers1 nice little books1 and small cards with letters of nearly every color and size4 ,such things are very attractive to the little natives4 ,i wish you could know the good you can do1 by sending your missionaries in ,africa such attractive papers and cards1 for those whom the missionaries cannot reach will be instructed and influenced by them in their homes4 ,the children who are brought in1 take these papers and fasten them up in their houses for ornaments4 ,the books and cards are offered as prizes to those who commit portions of the ,scripture accurately4 ,we have no ,sunday-school ,conventions like this one1 but sometimes we have ,concerts4 ,within the past few years1 all our missionaries have been ,freedmen from ,america1 and one of them was for a time connected with the ,jubilee ,singers of ,fisk ,university4 ,they taught us some of the ,jubilee ,songs1 such as 8,steal ,away to ,jesus10 8,mary and ,martha10 and 8,the ,hocks and the ,mountains ,shall ,all who has been assistant-matron in the boarding department4 ,the ,twanas and ,clallams were formerly at war with each other1 and even now there is not always the best of feeling between the two tribes3 a like unpleasant feeling has often been shown between the whites and ,indians3 yet1 on that ,sabbath1 representatives of the three classes received baptism1 there being one ,twana1 one ,clallam1 and one white person4 ,another noticeable fact was the motive which induced them to become ,christians4 ,in reply to my question on this point1 each one unknown to the other said1 that it was because he had noticed that ,christians were so much happier than other people4 ,two of them had tried the wrong road very earnestly1 and had found to their great sorrow that 8the way of the transgressor is hard40 ,i was led then to think of two or three others who had united with the church on profession of faith within about a year1 employees on the ,reservation1 who had made similar statements4 8,if the ,bible were not true1 and yet ,i could only believe it to be true1 ,i would gladly do so1 if it would bring me the happiness that ,christians profess to have10 said one4 ,since becoming a ,christian1 he has often spoken of his happiness1 and has great pity for those who are skeptical1 for he knows how they feel1 even if they do argue against ,christianity4 ,another of the number1 who was for three years very skeptical1 a talented writer1 and who used her talents against ,christianity so strongly that her companions feared to enter the lists against her1 and who was supposed to be thoroughly contented in her unbelief1 became a ,christian1 and now speaks of those years1 as 8three years of horrible darkness40 ,on the third ,sabbath of ,april1 ,i was at ,dunginess1 where ,i received four more into our church1 three on profession of faith4 ,two ,indians and two whites stood side by side to enter the church4 ,the communion season was very pleasant4 ,one white lady1 who had not been to the ,lord's table for a year1 and who was just recovering from sickness1 was so anxious to be present1 that as she was unable to walk the distance1 a little more than a quarter of a mile1 she was carried by her husband more than half the way in a wheelbarrow4 ,another lady1 seventy-six years old1 walked three miles to be present1 then another mile to where ,i should preach to the whites in the afternoon1 and home again in the evening1 about eight miles in all4 ,ten of the whites sat down there with the four ,indians in the ,indian church to celebrate ,christ's love4 ,one person1 who lives half a mile from the ,indian village1 said to me1 as we came away1 8,it is a shame1 it is a shame1 that the ,indians here are going ahead of the whites in religious affairs4 ,it is a wonder how they are making advancement1 considering the examples around them40 ,two marriages1 one infant and three adult baptisms1 four received to the church1 one communion service1 one funeral1 three prayer-meetings1 and other services to the amount of fourteen in all1 were the result of the eighteen days ,i was away from home4 ,i had been at home but a few days when ,i was sent for by an ,indian on the ,reservation who has been an invalid for some time1 and who asked to be received as a member of the church4 ,after considerable consultation1 he was so received week ago last ,sabbath4 ,last ,sabbath1 my work at ,seabeck culminated in a small church organization among the whites4 ,i have written you that ,i have preached at that place1 thirty miles distant1 about once a month1 when not called on some distant trip4 ,the work has amounted to about eight visits a year4 ,some six weeks ago1 ,i felt that it was best for the few ,christians there to be banded together4 ,i immediately tried to obtain some assistance in organizing1 but after three efforts failed entirely1 and hence1 armed with authority from this church1 ,i proceeded with the organization4 ,nine entered it1 two on profession of faith4 ,the heterogeneousness of the population may be seen from the fact that of the seven who joined from other churches1 one came from a ,congregational church and two from a ,protestant ,methodist church in this ,territory1 one from a ,congregational church in ,california1 one from a ,presbyterian church in ,british ,columbia1 one from the ,episcopal church in ,england1 and one from the ,lutheran church in ,norway1 who1 however1 does not believe that he was a ,christian until after he left ,norway4 8,it is the ,lord's doings and it is marvellous in our eyes40 ,in the civilization of the ,indians we feel somewhat encouraged4 ,one fact has appeared quite plainly during the past winter4 ,it has been the most severe winter known here for twenty-five years--the snow at one time lying five feet deep--and although it was nearly gone on the tide flats in six weeks1 yet on most of the ,reservation it lay for more than three months from six inches to two feet deep4 ,as late as four or five years ago1 the ,indians generally lost a large number of cattle or horses every winter for want of feed1 even when there were only two or three weeks of snow1 selling altogether too much of their hay in the fall2 but during the past winter not one of their animals has died for want of food1 as far as ,i have been able to learn4 ,experience and observation have taught them to secure sufficient food and to keep it until all danger is over4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 8,,california ,,chinese ,,mission40 ,auxiliary to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 fog or swept by heavy1 dust-laden winds4 ,it has the aspect1 to a very good degree1 of a large inland city in ,new ,england--,springfield or ,hartford1 for example4 ,there is a good deal about it not yet very heavenly1 but1 when compared with the bustle and drive of affairs1 both climatic and human1 on this side of the ,bay1 it seems1 like ,auburndale1 ,mass41 to be a sort of 8,saint's rest40 ,it is constantly skimming the cream off our ,san ,francisco churches1 so that when a brother and sister have fairly come to their places as pillars here in the metropolis1 we expect soon to hear that 8they are thinking of moving to ,oakland40 ,these considerations have led to a more abundant provision for missionary work among the ,chinese in that city1 than anywhere else4 ,persons1 coming to ,california to labor in this missionary work1 are quite apt to become impressed with the necessities of the ,oakland ,chinese4 ,and so1 if our mission had not been1 by many years1 the first in that field2 and if there had not gathered about it a large number of ,christian ,chinese for whom it is a spiritual home2 and1 if it were not possible--thanks to the generous provision made for us by the warm place in the affection and respect of the ,chinese4 ,the expense is #dj per month4 ,as fruits of this labor1 we have #ag who are members of the ,first ,congregational ,church in ,oakland1 nearly the ,secretary of the ,association above named4 ,a great deal of work is done here besides the mere teaching2 a great deal of correspondence carried on2 a great deal of what may be called pastoral care exercised2 a good deal1 also1 of honest study of ,god's word4 ,but ,i am making my story too long4 ,about two miles south of this1 on ,ridley ,street1 is the ,barnes ,mission house1 a substantial two-story structure of wood1 with a smaller building on the rear of the lot1 occupied by our ,chinese brethren as a 8,home40 ,this is owned by the ,mission1 but has a debt upon it of #c1cjj4 ,the upper story is occupied by the family furnishing the teachers for the school in the room below4 ,the mother and daughter1 ,mrs4 ,c4 ,a4 ,sheldon and ,miss ,jennie ,sheldon1 are the ones whose names appear upon our lists1 but father and brothers all share lovingly and zealously in the work4 ,the rent derived from this upper story and from the 8,home0 in the rear1 pays the interest on the debt1 and the cost of insurance and taxes4 ,when we were erecting this building1 we expected to gather in it a school of #aej members with an average attendance of about #ajj2 but1 the very evening of its dedication1 the riots of ,july #ahgg occurred1 and1 for the time1 our work in almost all the city seemed to be knocked prostrate4 ,other changes1 the closing of some large shoe factories1 from which many of our pupils came1 and the restrictions laid upon the operatives in the ,mission ,woolen ,mills1 among whom we hoped to win some souls1 have prevented the realization of all that we hoped1 though the results at which all was aimed1 have not been denied4 ,there are many of whom--looking at our ,barnes ,mission house--we may say1 8,this man was born there40 ,a mile and a half further south is the ,bethany school1 taught in the chapel of ,bethany church1 and through the faithfulness and tact of its teacher well sustained1 although the ,chinese are not specially numerous in that locality4 ,and about two miles west of the ,central ,mission is the 8,west0 school1 taught in a little back-room1 behind a small store--a room most unpromising1 and rented for only #e per month1 but1 by the taste and care of teachers and pupils1 rendered quite neat and inviting4 ,the average attendance in each of these schools is a little less than #bj1 ranging between #ab and #ai4 ,in the aggregate1 about #age ,chinese now belong to these four schools2 not as many by nearly one-half as were enrolled in them three years ago4 ,sandlotism1 especially after it invaded our pulpits1 has been a sore hindrance to missionary success4 ,but we have tried to get closer to those whom we could bring within our reach1 and to do better work among them1 and ,god has graciously owned it in saving power4 ,sixty-six have been received to ,bethany church1 and of at least as many more the hope is cherished that they have passed from death unto life4 ,the present outlook seems to me to be especially cheering1 not only here but in almost all our fields4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,elephant ,,in ,,africa4 ,we have seen many pictures of elephants in ,africa1 and they were all in hunting scenes4 ,this noble1 wise1 and magnificent animal is hunted in every part of ,africa2 shot by the ,englishman's rifle in ,south ,africa and on the ,white ,nile1 speared by the natives1 pursued with the sword by the ,abyssinian tribes1 as if he were the most deadly enemy of the human race4 ,it is all for ivory1 for the tusks which have taken perhaps fifty years to grow1 that the huge beast is slain4 ,this hunting has been going on for many years1 and now in parts of ,africa there are no more elephants left4 ,some good people1 who are also trying to open up the 8,dark ,continent10 resolved to try some ,indian elephants4 ,they were sent from ,bombay in a ship to ,zanzibar1 and after much trouble were landed on the coast4 ,then away they marched1 and after a little time this new procession reached our station at ,mpwapwa1 and our missionary1 ,mr4 ,last1 writes to say how successful the elephants have been4 ,the dreaded fly could not harm them2 indeed1 they kill the flies by catching them in the folds of their thick skin1 if the old ,african travellers are to be believed4 ,our missionary1 ,mr4 ,stokes1 writes from ,uyuvi that these elephants had reached ,unyamwezi4 ,he says3-- 8,they can bear a thirty-six miles' march without food or water4 ,they can carry from twenty-five to thirty men's loads2 and the natives here very soon pick up the management of them4 ,i think these elephants have done more towards the civilization of ,central ,africa than anything else ,i have seen4 ,the natives think the white man a most wonderful fellow when these big creatures on which they look with terror obey him4 ,it was quite a picture to view the astonishment depicted on the faces of these poor blacks1 as they watched these huge beasts kneeling down at the word of command to let us get on their backs1 or elevating their trunks to bid salaam to an ,arab40 ,the ,church ,missionary ,society would be very glad if it could send two or three of these wise beasts to their ,mission at ,mpwapwa1 to help carry the missionaries up and down with the stores they must have from time to time2 and then1 when our missionaries can speak freely in the language1 think what a help the elephant would be on a missionary tour4 ,besides1 when the natives see how useful the elephants are1 they will soon learn to catch and tame them1 as did the ,carthaginians1 #fjj years before ,christ4 ,turn to the fortieth chapter of ,job1 and read about the behemoth4 ,you will see in the marginal reference1 8,the ,elephant40 8,he is the chief of the ways of ,god40 ,what a blessed time that will be1 if1 instead of being destroyed by man1 this1 the most wonderful of ,god's creatures1 is used to carry about the messengers of the ,gospel of
