cheerful congratulations than the ,american ,missionary ,association2 and we wish its patrons and workers a thankful and prosperous ,happy ,new ,year4 ,by the merciful blessing of ,god and the prayerful liberality of ,his people1 we have been sustained in our work4 ,the number of our pupils has multiplied4 ,the ,holy ,spirit has been poured out upon our churches4 ,a great improvement in public sentiment ,south has been witnessed4 ,questions relating to the policy of the government have been settled4 ,we have escaped the bondage of debt1 and1 better still1 have received a munificent gift for additional school facilities1 and1 like the prophet of ,israel1 are ready to exclaim1 8,the ,god of ,heaven1 ,he will prosper us1 therefore we1 ,his servants1 will arise and build40 ,our missionaries and teachers at home and abroad have been spared and blessed abundantly4 ,let us rejoice1 but not stop in our work4 ,our best joys spring forth from busiest toil4 ,the work before us is great--greater than ever4 ,we are called most encouragingly to stand on our ,western shores1 and in the name of ,christ to welcome the ,chinaman4 ,we bear good tidings amidst ice and snow in the ,northland to the ,american ,indian4 ,kansas utters a voice for her ,freedmen refugees2 while the sunny ,south1 we believe1 has almost passed its winter of discontent4 ,seed time1 with more favoring skies1 is right upon us2 and ,africa--land of shadows1 land of trouble and wrong--from her vast domains is stretching out her hand for our ,freedmen to come over and help4 ,there is no quarter of the globe where the principles we advocate are not wanted4 ,the millennial year rushes on to our view4 ,it is a question of prayer--a question of sacrifice and thanksgiving--a question of the patience of hope and the labor of love4 ,god grant us all a preparation for the hour and all its possibilities4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,financial4 ,the receipts in our treasury for the two months of the present fiscal year 7,oct4 and ,nov47 are #bi1beh4eg1 as against #bf1egg4je for the corresponding months of last year1 showing an increase of #b1fha4eb1 and are gratifying as a response to our appeal for enlargement1 made at our annual meeting at ,norwich4 ,never before was such an appeal of ours met in a more business-like way than at that meeting4 ,there was no hasty vote calling for large sums of money the coming year1 but a discriminating examination1 and a strong setting forth in reports and addresses of the great need of enlargement4 ,we have since ventured to suggest twenty-five per cent4 of an advance over last year4 ,this is indeed inadequate to the pressing and increasing claims made upon us by the wants of the field1 but it will be a great relief4 ,the advance as shown in these two months is but nine per cent4 ,we are persuaded that a thoughtful purpose on the part of pastors1 churches and individual friends will easily secure the larger percentage4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the story we publish in our children's department1 by ,mrs4 ,t4 ,n4 ,chase1 is worthy of a word of explanation4 ,the account she gives of the ,georgia colored school-teacher1 her efforts for a school-house and for the education of her sister1 is strictly true2 but as ,mrs4 ,chase wrote before ,christmas1 she was obliged to anticipate a little4 ,the fact is1 the girl never got the #cjj1 which ,mrs4 ,chase says1 in a note to us1 is needful for the school-house alone4 ,we see no way out of the difficulty now1 unless some good ,christian mothers will send us the sum named4 ,if they will do this1 we will warrant there will be more than a large school of colored children who will believe that ,mrs4 ,chase's narrative is a very good one4 ,and what would ,mrs4 ,chase think to get #cjj for her story8 99 99 99 99 99 ,president ,fairchild of ,berea1 ,ky41 in a private letter1 gives a very interesting account of a convention of the ,young ,men's ,christian ,association at ,bowling ,green4 ,two ,berea students1 one white and the other colored1 attended the meeting1 and gave a report of the proceedings on their return4 ,it appears that both were welcomed by the ,association1 while ,mr4 ,titus1 the colored man1 was treated with marked attention1 many taking pains to make his acquaintance4 ,the feature of chief interest at the meeting was the discussion of questions relating to the religious education of the ,freedmen4 ,mr4 ,titus was urged to assist in the organization of ,christian ,associations among the colored people in ,louisiana4 ,the tone of the meeting was exceedingly favorable4 ,pres4 ,fairchild concludes as follows3 8,a glorious time for work in the ,south is just before us40 99 99 99 99 99 ,it is said that the tendency now is for the few to give largely1 while the gifts of the churches1 as such1 are less4 ,sad1 if true4 ,the recent large gifts of the generous few are as gratifying as they are surprising4 ,they are one of the hopeful signs of the substantial growth of ,christian liberality and consecration4 ,but if they are to be purchased by the drying up of the charities of the many1 it is in the end no boon1 for woe to the churches when they do not share in giving1 even to the widow's mite1 for the spread of the ,gospel4 ,a piety that delegates its charities and self-sacrifices to the few will die4 ,such a state of affairs is like the ,sahara of parching sands with a few green oases1 as compared with the fertile and well cultivated lands where each spear of grass and blade of corn does its part towards the golden and abundant harvest4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,retiring ,,from ,,business4 ,it is a debated question whether a man should retire from business when he has accumulated a competency4 ,on the one hand1 tired nature pleads for rest1 and on the other it is claimed that the retired man is not only useless1 but unhappy4 ,a gentleman gave us the other day what seems to be the true solution--and the charm of his plan is that he is carrying it out in his own case4 ,it is that the wealthy man while still active1 should retire from his secular business and give himself to efficient service in mission and charitable organizations1 and in ,christian work for the poor1 and the advancement of ,christ's kingdom4 ,there is wide room for such workers4 ,we venture to say that among those most efficient on mission1 college and charitable boards in this country are such men1 and there is need of many more4 ,a still larger share of the reliable members of such boards are men yet in active life1 whose business will not permit them to devote the time needed to the most efficient service in charitable work4 ,the man who has accumulated his fortune1 or at least his competence1 has also accumulated an amount of experience and practical knowledge that would be of immense value in ,christian work4 ,is it not1 then1 wise to retire from work1 and yet work8 ,the change would be rest and usefulness4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,words ,,of ,,encouragement4 ,we have received many cheering words since our ,annual ,meeting at ,norwich1 through the press and by letters from the long-tried friends of this ,association4 ,the following1 from our honored ,vice ,president1 ,col4 ,g4 ,c4 ,hammond1 is a good illustration of the appreciative and hopeful tone exhibited by the many of those who give bountifully and prayerfully for our work4 8,dear ,brother3 ,i was anxious to be at your anniversary at ,norwich1 and disappointed that my health prevented4 ,you may well suppose with what relish ,i have devoured the last #8,missionary4' ,i feel constrained to write you a word of congratulation1 not intended to tax your valuable time for a reply1 but to assure you that1 so far as ,i can judge1 the papers presented to you at that time1 and now printed1 by far exceed any heretofore presented within my recollection4 ,the obstacles that lie in your path1 the encouragement to work1 and the plans and principles which govern the ,association in their labors1 are laid down so plainly1 and so commend themselves to the appreciation of ,christians1 that it would seem that means must flow into the treasury in no stinted measure4 ,but1 alas1 how true it is that the love of money shuts out even from ,christian souls the just appreciation of the ,saviour's claims4 ,my prayer is that ,god will1 by ,his spirit1 make ,his children appreciate the great joy of giving4 ,how much they would gain by liberal giving60 99 99 99 99 99 ,,arthington ,,mission--,a ,,significant ,,answer ,,to ,,prayer4 ,it will be remembered by our readers that a little more than a year since1 the ,executive ,committee of this ,association voted that on receipt of #c1jjj from ,mr4 ,arthington and a like amount from the ,british public1 raised through the efforts of ,dr4 ,o4 ,h4 ,white1 it would undertake the establishment of a new mission in ,eastern ,africa4 ,dr4 ,white has been laboring patiently with fair success1 and from present indications we judge he will be able to secure the balance needful during the coming season4 ,the following extract from a recent letter from him is very significant4 8,a gentleman in ,london1 who heard me preach six months ago in ,scotland1 came to our office and said1 #8,i will give #ajj to your ,arthington ,mission on condition that some other person will give another #ajj4' ,so ,i went in to find the person4 ,after seeing some1 and writing to others1 ,i found a man who also heard me in ,edinburgh1 and he gave the #ajj4 ,i then saw the first man and told him ,i had the money1 and he said1 #8,i will not give in the money just now1 but ,i will pledge another #ajj on the same condition4' ,but ,i had called on so many in the past year1 that really ,i did not know which way to turn4 ,so ,i laid the case before ,god1 and had in that connection the most direct answer ever given to me4 8,the very next day a lady came to the office and said1 #8,i felt all the afternoon yesterday that ,i ought to go to ,london and give you #ajj for the proposed new mission1 and here it is4' ,it was a #ajj bank-note4 ,i asked her name1 that ,i might write a receipt4 ,she said #8,no4' ,i said #8,give me your initials4' ,she said #8,no1 put it down to 8a friend10 and you may see me again4' ,so when the ,london gentleman pays in his #bjj we shall have #djj40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,more ,,missionaries--,,the ,,gospel ,,way4 ,there never before was a time when the openings for missionary endeavors were so abundant4 ,barriers which formerly opposed1 have been broken down almost everywhere4 ,in many places there is some condition of things that invites the ,gospel directly or indirectly4 ,this is notable on the ,pacific coast1 where the ,chinese are so eager to learn ,english that they are more than ready to use the ,bible as a textbook4 ,nor are the ,chinese peculiar in this4 ,knowledge of the ,english language is equal to a competency in other lands1 and the ,bible can be freely used in teaching it4 ,commerce has also removed many barriers2 and what is of equal importance1 it has necessitated the building of ships1 the construction of railroads1 the laying out of highways in the desert1 and a telegraph for every quarter of the globe4 ,the press has done its share of work as well4 ,through it1 intelligence has penetrated almost to the remotest bounds of heathendom4 ,all these things have made way for more missionaries4 ,to this it must be added that the increase of missionary organizations and the natural development of their operations1 all multiply the demand for more men to run to and fro throughout the world1 heralding the tidings of joy unto all people4 ,still another barrier has been virtually removed4 ,once money was lacking1 but now the church of ,christ has the means needful to send forth all the men that the new condition of things demands4 ,not that the wealth is yet consecrated1 but it is in possession1 and by the simplest gift of grace from the ,lord of the harvest1 it will be forthcoming when required4 ,the men have also been raised up4 ,they have not enlisted1 but they have been trained4 ,the records of our colleges show now1 and have shown1 an increased number of students as the years go by4 ,new colleges have been springing up over the country1 until the list can be reckoned by scores and hundreds4 ,from these classic halls armies of men march forth1 brave1 sacrificing1 full of life and hope1 fitted for missionary endeavors1 and able--,god helping them--to capture the world for ,christ4 ,there is neither lack of opportunity1 money or men for the domain of missions4 ,the trouble is that the men and the means have not as yet been transferred4 ,there is some one thing lacking which no human power can supply4 ,it is a question of disposition on the part of those who hold the wealth1 and of the men fitted for the service4 ,god only is able to deal with this question of disposition successfully4 ,he can do it1 and we can help4 ,this brings us directly to our part in the work4 ,how we are to do it is no mystery4 ,our ,saviour has pointed to us the way--8,pray ye1 therefore1 the ,lord of the harvest1 that ,he will send forth laborers into ,his harvest40 ,our call is a call to prayer4 ,that is the one thing lacking4 ,not that no prayers are offered1 but that1 as yet1 the prayers of ,god's people for this object are not sufficiently abundant4 ,the church has not qualified itself to pray as it ought1 by right living4 ,more ,godly sincerity1 more humility1 more faith1 more charity1 are needful to elevate the tone of piety in the ,church1 until its prayers shall lay hold on the promises1 with a power that ,god himself has already rendered irresistible4 ,then ,he will send forth the laborers into ,his harvest4 ,then the money and the men for the grandest and most complete missionary enterprises will be lifted from their moorings amidst worldliness1 and transported1 freely1 graciously1 from sea to sea1 and up the rivers to the ends of the earth4 ,in these days1 when we are especially reminded of the advent of ,him who came to bring good tidings of great joy for all people2 when we solemnly and joyfully set apart a week for prayer2 in these days when the great heart-beatings of those who manage our missionary organizations find vent only in unceasing calls for more missionaries1 it is a great relief--indeed1 a rest and assurance--to follow right on in the ,gospel way4 ,already the day has dawned1 and as we pray1 joining with the angels and the heavenly host1 deep calling unto deep1 over against the prayer we are taught to utter will follow the certain interrogation from the ,captain of our salvation1 which answers itself1 lovingly1 royally and sufficiently3 8,whom shall ,i send and who will go for us80 99 99 99 99 99 ,,weekly ,,offerings--,,an ,,objection ,,considered4 ,,rev4 ,,geo4 ,,harris1 ,,providence4 ,r4 ,i4 ,it is objected to the system of weekly offerings1 that it practically does away with the presentation from the pulpit of the claims of our missionary societies4 ,the objection is not a serious one1 and serves only to show that the real difficulty lies further back than the method of giving4 ,it proceeds on the assumption that in churches where occasional collections are taken1 sermons are preached annually by the pastor or by the secretaries on the claims of all the principal societies4 ,this is not true4 ,there are very few churches1 with whatever methods of giving1 where sermons are frequently heard on missionary subjects4 ,the objection assumes that under the system of weekly offerings sermons are not and cannot profitably be preached on the claims of our missionary societies4 ,this1 also1 is not true4 ,in these churches such sermons are sometimes preached1 and may be very effective1 taking the years together4 ,the objection assumes that people are to be interested in missions chiefly by listening to frequent discourses on the subject1 while the truth is1 that preaching is only one method among others4 ,the real difficulty1 ,i have said1 lies further back than the particular method of giving which may be used by a church4 ,the difficult thing is to produce an intelligent and sustained interest in ,christian work beyond local limits4 ,this difficulty has been felt for years and cannot be met by simply making public appeals from time to time4 ,there are various methods which may be employed with some success under any system of giving1 but which will leave much to be done anywhere4 ,it should be well understood1 first of all1 that it is the duty1 not of secretaries1 but of pastors1 to keep the people alive to the progress of ,christ's kingdom in the world4 ,the first condition is1 that pastors be well informed about missionary enterprises and deeply in sympathy with them4 ,if it were certain that the pastors know the progress and plans of missions1 and that they are really solicitous to remove the ignorance and apathy of the people1 the battle would be more than half won4 ,now1 when the pastor has an intelligent interest in missions at home and abroad1 the following suggestions may be useful3 ,a sermon devoted to this subject may be preached occasionally1 and the preacher may enrich sermons on other subjects by illustrations from the multiform conditions and incidents of missionary work1 and thus accomplish two objects at the same time4 ,but the second service1 which should be devoted to instruction rather than persuasion1 may frequently become a missionary meeting4 ,the prayers of the pastor may be made more effective for missions than his sermons4 ,if he makes mention in his prayers of the servants of ,christ who are toiling among the heathen1 or the ,freedmen1 or the ,western settlers1 and prays1 not with a tedious enumeration1 but with fervor and definiteness1 he will put missions on the hearts of the people4 ,what has a place frequently in our prayers has a place in our sympathies4 ,yet how often the petitions of public worship are confined to the boundaries of the parish4 ,something may be done by increasing the circulation of missionary magazines4 ,let the annual contribution make as many life members as possible1 to whom these publications will be sent4 ,thus there are various means to be used in the interest of missionary work4 ,what is needed is the flavor of missions in the life of the churches1 the vision of ,christ's kingdom kept continually before the imagination and faith of the people1 the proportions of the local1 not magnified into excessive size1 but brought into true harmony with the greatness of our ,redeemer's work for the race4 ,not all people can be aroused into interest for missionary work by any methods2 whatever the zeal of the pastor1 some indifference will remain4 ,but if he has the missionary spirit1 he will not be contented with an occasional preaching4 ,he will determine the tone of worship and the direction of all endeavors by his enlarged view of ,god's plan for the redemption of men4 ,new suggestions1 allusions1 illustrations and prayers will swell the current of sympathy for missions1 and increase contributions under any method of giving4 ,but1 at all events1 if the pastor thinks it wise to preach on the subject1 or introduce a ,secretary when collections are to be taken1 there is no reason why he may not pursue the same course when pledges of money are made only once a year4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,few ,,words ,,to ,,the ,,churches4 ,it is customary for our ,district ,secretaries at this season to send to the churches letters and circulars containing statements of receipts and appeals for future co-operation4 ,we give below extracts from circulars issued from our offices at ,boston and ,chicago1 commending them as pertinent1 timely1 and fitted to provoke unto love and good works4 ,the following comes from ,secretary ,woodworth3 ,the battle for the ,republic and her institutions will be fought in the ,south2 and for the simple reason that the battle will be fought where the causes of the battle exist1 and the principles which underlie our free institutions encounter most of opposition and danger4 ,and this battle for the foundations of the ,republic1 and for the administration of every public right and interest1 is now upon us4 ,the war itself involved no graver questions1 and called for no higher style of patriotic sacrifice and zeal4 ,every appliance of ,christian education and of moral power must be enlisted to uplift the people and unify the nation2 and for this work the time favors4 ,for four years1 at least1 we have an open course2 the political signs are more auspicious2 and we may hope to push far ahead the forces of intellectual and moral regeneration4 ,the colored people are intensely loyal to the rule of majorities2 they believe1 heart and soul1 in those who broke their chains2 they accept their principles1 and receive joyfully the lessons of their teachers and their preachers4 ,with them we can build up free schools1 ,christian churches and homes1 and plant and develop the seeds and forces which have their type and prophecy in ,plymouth ,rock4 ,now is our time4 ,arm them with a true manhood2 educate them into a true knowledge of their duties to ,god and to man1 and they will bring peace and strength to our land1 now threatened with storm and wreck1 and prepare the way for the redemption of the ,dark ,continent itself4 ,secretary ,powell's appeal concludes with special requests1 inviting immediate attention4 ,he says3 ,the ,executive ,committee ask for an increase of twenty-five per cent4 this coming year to the contributions from churches and individuals4 #a4 ,if your ,church has not yet made a contribution to the ,american ,missionary ,association during the year1 will you please ask them to do so before the year ends8 #b4 ,when your ,church reviews the benevolence of the past year1 and plans for the next1 will you please see to it that the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is placed on the list of causes for which contributions are to be made1 and that the time of year when the contribution is to be taken is chosen with a full view of the great importance of our work8 ,the time of year selected often makes all the difference between a large and a small contribution4 #c4 ,at the monthly concert will you please plan so that the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 will have a place in the prayer and thought of your people1 and that some field or branch of our work shall be reported8 ,the despised races of ,america1 and those who1 in great self-denial1 privation1 and sometimes opposition1 labor for them1 should not be forgotten when ,god's people meet to pray for the conversion of the world4 #d4 ,will pastors please arrange so that at some time during the year they will preach a sermon to their people on the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a48 ,the ,november number of ,,the ,,american ,,missionary will be found rich in fact and suggestion for such a discourse4 ,the theme will prove to be of great interest both to preacher and hearer4 #e4 ,will you endeavor to enlarge the circle of the readers of our monthly magazine1 ,,the ,,american ,,missionary8 ,specimen copies in any number will be sent you free if you so request4 ,the ,magazine gives reliable information respecting our work1 and notices the current events that relate to the welfare and progress of the races for whom we labor4 ,it will be found a helpful factor in the development of an intelligent1 patriotic and tender piety to the membership of the churches4 ,may we not confidently look for the co-operation of every one into whose hand this appeal comes to make certain that the increase asked for by our ,executive ,committee shall be secured8 ,plan for it1 pray for it1 talk about it1 interest others in it1 and don't forget to give for it4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,discussion ,,of ,,indian ,,affairs4 ,we rejoice in the continued agitation of the ,indian problem4 ,it is only under the shelter of popular indifference that wrong and revenge become the order of the day--with murders1 wars and boundless expense4 ,under 8the sunlight of publicity0 the wrongs are detected and the remedies are projected and applied4 ,just now we are favored with three valuable papers on this subject4 ,in the first place we have the report of the ,committee of ,indian ,affairs1 giving a very encouraging statement of the progress of the ,indians in the arts of civilization4 ,we have next the elaborate report of ,hon4 ,carl ,schurz1 ,secretary of the ,interior1 in which1 with a frankness as rare as it is commendable1 he acknowledges the change of views and policy of the ,administration in relation to ,indian affairs4 ,he then with great clearness outlines its present policy1 and takes occasion to speak minutely of the case of the ,poncas4 ,the injustice done to them in their original removal from ,dakota is admitted1 but it is also clear to him that it 8would be contrary1 alike to their own interests and to those of the country at large1 to remove them from their present homes4 ,this conclusion is arrived at by reason of various considerations1 such as the fact that their present condition in the ,indian ,territory is prosperous2 that they do not themselves want to return ,north1 and also because if they are removed back to ,dakota1 the other ,northern ,indians now in the ,indian ,territory would be made restless with a desire to follow their example4 ,this would1 in all probability1 result in an extensive evacuation of the ,indian ,territory1 and of that part of it which contains the lands coveted by the intruders1 and which lands are held against them on the ground that they are reserved for ,indian settlement4 ,it is obvious10 says the ,secretary1 8that the evacuation by the ,indians of the region held for ,indian settlement1 and defended on that very ground against intruders1 would be apt greatly to encourage and stimulate the projects of invasion1 which1 although repeatedly repelled1 are pursued by evil-disposed persons with persistent activity40 ,the last of these papers is the ,president's message1 in which he endorses and briefly recapitulates the views of the ,secretary of the ,interior in regard to the ,indians4 ,we clip from this a few paragraphs presenting the attitude of the ,administration3 8,it gives me great pleasure to say that our ,indian affairs appear to be in a more hopeful condition now than ever before4 ,the ,indians have made gratifying progress in agriculture1 herding and mechanical pursuits4 ,the introduction of the freighting business among them has been remarkably fruitful of good results1 in giving many of them congenial and remunerative employment1 and in stimulating their ambition to earn their own support4 ,their honesty1 fidelity and efficiency as carriers are highly praised4 ,the organization of a police force of ,indians has been equally successful in maintaining law and order upon the reservations1 and in exercising a wholesome moral influence among the ,indians themselves4 8,much care and attention has been devoted to the enlargement of educational facilities for the ,indians4 ,the means available for this important object have been very inadequate4 ,a few additional boarding-schools at ,indian agencies have been established1 and the erection of buildings has been begun for several more1 but an increase of the appropriations for this interesting undertaking is greatly needed to accommodate the large number of ,indian children of school age4 ,the number offered by their parents from all parts of the country for education in the ,government schools is much larger than can be accommodated with the means at present available for that purpose4 ,the number of ,indian pupils at the ,normal ,school at ,hampton4 ,va41 under the direction of ,general ,armstrong1 has been considerably increased1 and their progress is highly encouraging4 ,the ,indian ,school established by the ,interior ,department in #ahgi1 at ,carlisle1 ,pa41 under the direction of ,captain ,pratt1 has been equally successful4 ,it has now nearly #bjj pupils of both sexes1 representing a great variety of the tribes east of the ,rocky ,mountains4 ,the pupils in both these institutions receive not only an elementary ,english education1 but are also instructed in house-work1 agriculture and useful mechanical pursuits4 8,the interest shown by ,indian parents1 even among the so-called wild tribes1 in the education of their children1 is very gratifying1 and gives promise that the results accomplished by the efforts now making will be of lasting benefit4 8,i concur with the ,secretary of the ,interior in expressing the earnest hope that ,congress will at this session take favorable action on the bill providing for the allotment of lands on the different reservations in severalty to the ,indians1 with patents conferring fee-simple title inalienable for a certain period1 and the eventual disposition of the residue of the reservations1 for general settlement1 with the consent and for the benefit of the ,indians1 placing the latter under the equal protection of the laws of the country4 ,this measure1 together with a vigorous prosecution of our educational efforts1 will work the most important and effective advance toward the solution of the ,indian problem1 in preparing for the gradual merging of our ,indian population in the great body of ,american citizenship40 ,we have never doubted the honest purpose of ,president ,hayes' ,administration to deal justly and wisely with the ,indian problem1 and the plan it now proposes must meet the approbation of all good citizens4 ,the great question still remains3 ,how far will the ,nation insist on the necessary legislation by ,congress to carry out these plans8 ,it is in this point of view that we hail with gratification the continued agitation of the subject1 even if it should involve differences of opinion among the warmest friends of the ,indians4 ,and there are such differences4 ,for example1 it is said that the claim of great improvement among the ,indians1 as shown in their making demand for lands in severalty1 and in their progress in agricultural industries1 is mere rhetoric1 for it has been repeated over and over again for years1 in the reports of the ,indian ,department4 8,fine words butter no parsnips0 for the ,indian1 any more than for the white man4 ,give to the ,indian his patents and secure to him his rights4 ,the doing of it is the thing demanded4 ,then1 too1 ,mr4 ,tibbles and ,bright ,eyes are still on the war path1 with a following so earnest and respectable as to command attention4 ,we do not pronounce on the justice of their claim1 but we do welcome the agitation4 ,the great thing to be dreaded is the relegation of the ,indian question to indifference and neglect4 ,it has many aspects1 and its permanent and righteous settlement is the immediate and imperative duty of the nation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,woman',s ,,work ,,for ,,woman4 ,,miss ,,mary ,e4 ,,sawyer4 ,a ,paper read at the ,women's ,meeting1 held in connection with the ,annual ,meeting of the ,american ,missionary ,association at ,norwich1 ,ct4 ,before every ,southern teacher to whom comes the opportunity of presenting this cause1 so dear to us1 to the ,christian women of the ,north1 two pictures rise4 ,looking upon the one1 you would shrink back in dismay1 wondering if it be not hopeless to try and illumine a darkness so gloomy1 to raise a class so utterly buried in ignorance1 superstition and sin4 ,but1 could we turn to you the other view1 show the work done1 acquaint you with the trials1 the sacrifices1 the glorious victories over fiery temptations1 the patient continuance in well-doing in the face of obstacles almost insurmountable1 then1 indeed1 you might be tempted to take the other extreme and feel that missionaries are hardly needed among a people whose ,christian record shines brighter than our own4 ,so1 coming as pledged witnesses before you to tell the truth1 the whole truth and nothing but the truth1 we shrink from the vastness of the undertaking1 for while exactly fulfilling the last requirement and telling nothing but the truth1 we keenly realize the many contradictions1 and know that the whole truth cannot be told in a single hour--can never1 indeed1 be fully known till seen in the light of eternity4 ,we read of nations with no word for home4 ,come through the cabins of the ,south and you will find not the name but the reality wanting4 ,you will not find there any incentive or help to personal modesty1 any retirement or any sense of impropriety in the state of things4 ,from these influences and homes many of our girls come to us with minds and characters such as might be expected from such surroundings4 ,we sometimes speak of them as children1 but the comparison is hardly just4 ,never do ,i realize more keenly their deprivations than after talking with ,northern children--little children whose precocity1 to one fresh from the ,south1 seems almost alarming1 suggestive of brain fevers and early death4 ,from babyhood their wits have been quickened by contact with other and mature minds1 their many questions wisely answered till they have absorbed knowledge enough to be intelligent companions before their so-called education begins4 ,but put them in the place of the colored children1 remove all books1 all papers1 all pictures1 let them have no knowledge of the outside world1 let all their questions be addressed to people as ignorant as themselves1 and you will find the youth of sixteen far behind the child of six4 ,to many of the girls1 entering school is like entering a new world4 ,they sit for the first time in their lives at a well ordered table1 utterly at a loss as to the proper manner of conducting themselves4 ,the refined manners of the older students bewilder them4 ,the door of a teacher's room is suddenly and unceremoniously thrown open1 and two or three girls march silently before her to the fire1 and standing with vacant faces by its warmth1 are perfectly unconscious of any impropriety in such a mode of entrance1 or of the need of a single word of explanation4 ,it is no uncommon thing for a girl to throw herself1 fully dressed1 on the outside of her freshly-made bed and there pass the night1 having no conception of properly undressing and going to bed4 ,our school work1 then1 includes much more than one would at first imagine4 ,each girl has some part in the household work1 and must be taught the neatest1 quickest and best method of doing it4 ,this does not mean once showing1 but careful1 patient oversight for days and weeks4 ,her room1 clean and tidy1 when given her1 must be kept in the same condition1 and this necessitates very frequent and very thorough inspection1 till she at length comprehends fully that a hasty use of the broom1 leaving the sweepings under the bed or behind the door1 a scrambling up of all loose articles into one pile on the closet floor1 or a set of drawers with finger marks outside and a motley collection of clean and dirty clothing within1 will not satisfy the requirement4 ,the same care is exercised over her person2 clean1 whole clothing1 well-kept hair and thorough bathing transform her outwardly1 while the loud1 boisterous tones1 the coarse expressions1 the uncouth manners are toned and softened by constant care4 ,sewing1 in which they are woefully deficient1 receives due attention1 and girls whose hands can manage a plough or a cotton bag much more easily than they can hold a needle1 become at the end of the course very nice seamstresses1 whose work would rejoice the hearts of the advocates of hand sewing4 ,in these classes1 besides plain sewing of every description1 the girls are taught patching and darning1 and the cutting and putting together of garments1 and in at least one of the colleges1 each girl who graduates must leave behind a garment cut and made entirely by herself1 as a specimen of her skill4 ,a few minutes daily are spent in giving the assembled school a brief summary of the important items of news in the great outside world1 and more or less time is devoted to plain talks on practical matters1 manners1 morals and care of the health1--the last a subject1 by the way1 with which they seem wholly unacquainted1 and which the girls especially need to become familiar with4 ,dress reform in two directions needs to be impressed upon them1 as the uncouth garb of the girls from the woods1 and the thin slippers1 cheap finery1 powder1 paint and corsets laced to the last verge of human endurance donned by the city girls1 bear testimony4 ,but this is not all4 ,these girls are sent to us to be trained for ,christ1 and knowing the utter folly of attempting to build up a pure1 noble womanhood on any other foundation than ,christian principle1 we try by all our system and watchfulness and oversight to establish them in this1 earnestly praying the ,master to send from on high that blessing without which all our labors will be nothing worth4 ,have you never in some late ,spring watched the brown leaf-buds1 as day after day they seemed to remain unchanged1 till you were tired of waiting for the fulfilment of their promise8 ,and do you remember your joyful surprise when1 leaving them thus at night you woke to find the whole tree aglow with the fresh1 tiny bits of color from the bursting buds8 ,so we feel often as we wake to realize that the rough1 awkward girl who came to us has developed into the quiet1 refined ,christian woman1 leaving us for her life work4 ,nor are we the only ones to see the transformation4 8,i am looking to see what kind of a woman you are10 said a child to one of the ,talladega students as she opened her log cabin school in the pine wood4 8,you look to me like a white lady40 ,the teacher's face was of the most pronounced ,african type1 and black as ebony1 but her quiet dignity and refined manner excited the child's wonder and elicited the unconscious compliment4 ,as teachers1 these girls carry the missionary spirit with them1 and feeling their responsibility1 open ,sunday-schools and engage in temperance work as surely as they begin their day schools4 ,into the cabins they carry1 as far as may be1 a regard for neatness1 order1 and those little adornments which make home what it is4 ,happy the young colored minister who wins one of them for his wife1 thus establishing a home which shall supplement his sermons and act as leaven in the homes of his people4 ,more than one graduate of the colored theological seminaries is gravely hampered in his usefulness by an ignorant1 careless wife4 ,as one frankly expressed the matter to a brother minister1 8,my wife is more trouble to me than all my work put together40 ,and in thus training our girls to be careful1 efficient housewives1 we know we may be moulding not them alone1 nor their immediate households1 but the whole community of women over whom1 as ministers' wives and the most thoroughly educated women1 they will exert a powerful influence4 ,but we have deeply felt the need of more direct and personal influence over the women4 ,the work of the school needs to be supplemented by that of the missionary3 mother and daughter must work together for the best result4 ,but the teacher had little time after the school duties were performed1 and the lady missionaries so sorely longed for1 were very few in number4 ,why not1 then1 work through our tried colored helpers8 ,the description of the way this has been done in other ,states ,i leave to those whose experience is wider than my own4 ,in ,alabama1 we have a 8,woman's ,missionary ,association10 holding annual meetings in connection with the ,state conference of churches1 and having auxiliary societies in these several churches4 ,the colored women who compose these societies have heartily and faithfully assumed the duties devolving upon them1 and helping others have themselves been helped4 ,the work done is varied1 no rigid plan being laid down4 ,sewing classes for the women and girls1 prayer-meetings for the mothers1 ,bible-readings1 visiting from house to house1 bearing food and medicine for the sick1 clothing for the destitute1 and comfort and sympathy for all1 health talks--than which nothing can be more needed1--literary societies to develop their untrained minds1 foreign missionary meetings to broaden their sympathies2 all these and other ways of working for the ,lord are reported at their last meeting4 ,in ,april1 for the first time1 this annual meeting was visited by several white ,southern ladies4 ,our surprise at their coming was only equalled by their amazement at the revelations4 8,you put our ladies to the blush10 said one4 8,you are far ahead of us in ,christian work40 8,only to think10 exclaimed another as she listened to the carefully prepared papers and systematic reports1--8,only to think that we have kept such women as these in slavery60 ,there are bright1 promising girls all over the ,south1 who1 to make just such women as these1 need only your help4 ,you cannot leave your home duties to go yourself to them1 but you can provide the means by which they may be fitted to act as your substitutes among their people4 8,ten times one is ten10 you know1 and the girl to whom you lend a hand may win many more souls into the kingdom4 ,they stand to-day on the border3 your arm lifting1 they will come into power and usefulness3 your heart closed to them1 they will sink back into the old life4 ,there must be many in this room to-day who have aided this work by gifts dearer to them than their own lives4 ,does not the scene come back to you1 when through blinding tears you looked for the last time on brother or husband or son1 as for love of ,god and country the dear ones marched away to find a grave beneath the ,southern skies8 ,they rest from their labors4 ,it remains for us1 for their dear sake1 to see that this work they so nobly begun shall be as honorably carried on4 ,doubtless the ,lord could perfect this work without our aid1 but ,he has chosen to entrust it to our keeping4 ,and with every instinct of humanity1 every impulse of patriotism1 every principle of ,christianity urging us to the work1 shall we not receive it as from our ,saviour's hand1 holding fast that which we have1 that no man take our crown8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,benefactions4 ,mr4 ,cyrus ,h4 ,mc,cormick has given #ajj1jjj to the ,presbyterian ,theological that an afternoon given to church extension and the spread of education was of the deepest interest4 ,between the two papers1 or addresses1 was another on more generous giving by the churches1 fill to repletion if all who support it could have an inside view4 ,in conversations at ,andover on two different occasions1 ,prof4 ,park uttered the strongest and most anxious impressions respecting our national future and the condition of the ,south4 ,i am sure that he and all deep-sighted and far-sighted men would find them intensified on actual examination of the facts4 ,the task before us is vast1 and1 but for divine help1 overwhelming and impracticable4 ,nothing in church order and work can save these people but the freest and most intelligent system2 nothing in education but practical training for the duties and competitions with a more favored race1 guided and inspired by thorough ,christian principle4 ,another afternoon was given to an ecclesiastical council1 called by the #b;d ,congregational church of ,memphis1 to advise as to the ordination of a pastor4 ,the examination of the young man who had been preaching to them for some months was a thoroughly delightful one1 specially full and rich in the recital of ,christian experience4 ,the young brother is a light colored man1 a native of ,pennsylvania1 of an earnest1 intense nature1 studious1 modest1 instructive as a preacher1 and edifying to a group of ,northern white teachers in ,le ,moyne ,institute1 and bore himself as to clearness and soundness of doctrine1 in a manner so admirable1 that many candidates for the ministry from the more favored race might well look up to him4 ,very tender and sweet was his testimony to parental faithfulness1 and the divine blessing upon it in the ,presbyterian church in which he was brought up1 and to the providential leading that guided him into the ministry 8for the sake of the work in the ,south40 ,the ,conference1 at an earlier session1 licensed two other young brethren1 whose work in gathering churches and schools is sorely needed in the communities they represent4 ,one of these preached before it4 ,twice this week ,i have given before ,freedmen's institutions lectures prepared for ,northern college audiences4 ,one's respect for these institutions and for their students could only be raised by the intelligent attention given4 ,the city press--,democratic--has made courteous and even generous notice of the religious proceedings of the week4 ,dr4 ,roy and myself were promptly invited to occupy ,presbyterian pulpits in the city1 and were most kindly and respectfully received4 ,we were assured that we should be heard with pleasure again1 and that the ,gospel which we preached was that which they received1 knowing 8no ,north1 no ,south40 ,on ,sabbath evening the place of worship of the #b;d ,congregational ,church--the first is of white people--was crowded with attentive hearers of both races while the ordination exercises were held4 ,the young pastor had been chosen by the ,conference delegate to the ,national ,council at ,st4 ,louis1 and the people1 at the close of the ordination1 raised a sum of money to defray his expenses4 ,i have never seen more genuine and grateful joy among a ,christian flock at the gift of a pastor and teacher than these people showed as they crowded up to take his hand after he had pronounced the benediction4 ,they are ordinarily more social and demonstrative at all religious gatherings than white ,christians4 ,some views of their future1 and of the great and grave problems involved in their elevation by a free ,christianity and by ,christian education1 were deeply impressed upon me during my week among them1 to which ,i may give utterance hereafter4--,christian ,mirror4 a man whom it believed to be a good man1 and in the enthusiasm of the moment it undertook to support him without aid from the ,association4 ,they ran the church nine months1 and then were glad to get back under the sheltering wings of their cherishing mother4 ,they did not return a moment too soon4 ,life was at a very low ebb1 and the church required very tender nursing to bring it up4 ,the most ,i can say of it now is1 that it is convalescing4 ,the pulse is regular1 the digestion normal1 the eye is brighter and more hopeful1 there is a degree of buoyancy in the step1 the skin is more healthy1 and if there shall be no relapse1 we may confidently hope for full recovery4 ,but ,i would not advise a repetition of such experiments4 ,it isn't a good plan to try how near we can bring ourselves to the gate of death and then get back4 ,tannerism isn't good for church work4 ,the greatest burden of the church now1 is a debt of #a1bjj which it owes to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,we would like to pay this off1 and no doubt the money would be of great use in some other department of our great work1 but the people are very poor4 ,they are willing to do what they can1 but we find it hard to pay the interest on the mortgage4 ,if any of the readers of the ,,missionary desire to help a worthy cause1 let them send their donation to ,dr4 ,strieby1 to be set to the credit of ,plymouth church in ,charleston4 ,we have been revising our list of membership4 ,in the spring we had a solemn renewal of fellowship1 and from that renewal we made up our list4 ,in doing this we were obliged to drop from our record twenty-five names4 ,we number now1 present and absent1 #ahj2 but1 ,i am sorry to say1 some of them who are in the city1 and who solemnly covenanted to walk in the fellowship with the church1 still absent themselves from all our services4 ,still they regard themselves as exemplary ,christians1 and resent the imputation that they are not living consistent lives4 ,it is here1 as everywhere1 a few faithful ones are the bone and sinew of the church4 ,i wish ,i could take you into one of our prayer meetings1 such a one as we sometimes have1 for they are not all of the same degree of spiritual fervor1 but one of our good meetings is exceedingly enjoyable4 ,the songs are so weird and the prayers are so fervent and frequent1 and their attitude so devout--well1 perhaps your fastidious taste would be shocked1 but somehow ,i am drawn a little nearer ,heaven here than anywhere else4 ,i can't help saying 8,amen0 down in my heart4 ,and when they sing my body sways with theirs1 just as the sailor rolls his gait with the motion of the deck4 ,we sing a good many of the old time tunes1 and some that have not yet been translated into written song4 ,our people sing their good old household hymns to these tunes4 ,they have a happy faculty of adapting the words to the music1 no matter what the metre may be4 ,for instance1 the tune in the ,jubilee ,songs1 8,i will die in the field10 is made to fit the hymn1 8,when ,i can read my title clear40 ,sometimes the hymn is divided up1 and the chorus sandwiched in between the lines most ingeniously4 ,but1 however incongruous it may be to the rules of music1 it has a peculiar charm4 ,the church was well supplied during the vacation by ,rev4 ,david ,peebles1 of ,dudley1 ,n4 ,c4 ,bro4 ,peebles kept them together and strengthened their hands4 ,his ministry was most acceptable to the people4 ,if nothing happens to us we have every reason to expect the church now to grow4 ,we need the baptism of the ,spirit4 ,we are looking forward to a meeting1 soon to be held in the city1 under the direction of ,rev4 ,h4 ,e4 ,brown1 who has been laboring in the interest of the colored people in the ,south with great success4 ,the ,minister's ,union has taken hold of the matter1 and stands ready to give him a hearty co-operation4 ,bro4 ,brown's method introduces ,bible ,readings in public1 and from house to house4 ,this is what we need1 and what the people want4 ,we hope for a large blessing to follow4 ,there is a large territory spiritually to be occupied in ,charleston4 ,we have a population of #ej1jjj1 a large part of whom are colored4 ,in this county there are #ga1jjj colored people and only #cj1jjj white4 ,there are #fjd1jjj colored people in the ,state1 and #cia1jjj white4 ,the colored vote is #dj1jjj in majority4 ,there is great wickedness among these colored people4 ,they copy and improve upon the vices of the whites1 in addition to their natural depravity4 ,gambling1 profanity1 drunkenness1 licentiousness and ,sabbath-breaking abound4 ,some of these vices have been born of freedom1 others have been increased by it4 ,drunkenness was rare among the blacks in slavery4 ,gambling was comparatively unknown4 ,now both of these vices prevail to an alarming extent4 ,outside the city limits on ,sunday groups of men and boys are to be seen everywhere1 throwing dice or engaged in some other form of gambling4 ,an effort is on foot to reach these outlying masses and bring them under the influence of the ,gospel4 ,i know of but one missionary who gives her time to the work of visiting the thirty thousand colored people of this city4 ,we could use advantageously a dozen4 ,oh1 how much there is to be done1 and how few to do it2 and how weak all our instrumentalities in the face of these obstacles6 ,may ,god help us6 ,oh1 that the churches at the ,north could see what a field is open to them here in the ,south6 ,if we could have at least one more missionary here in ,charleston we would be glad1 and the money it would cost would be well expended4 ,the white people are waking up to more effort in missionary work4 ,they have commenced in the temperance reform1 and already a petition with #e1jjj names attached has been presented to the ,mayor and ,council1 asking that no more licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicating drinks4 ,it is a beginning4 ,a noble ,christian woman1 ,mrs4 ,chapin1 has been the prime mover of this endeavor4 ,we hope its influence will not be lost if the petition is rejected4 ,may ,god give us other and stronger petitions until the authorities see that ,christian people mean business4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,georgia4 ,atlanta ,university4 ,,rev4 ,c4 ,w4 ,,francis4 ,several facts of interest are connected with the opening of the school year at ,atlanta ,university4 #ast4 ,we are in possession of several valuable improvements1 which give increased facilities long greatly needed4 ,these are in consequence of recent gifts1 the first fruits of which a conjunction of favorable circumstances made thus early available4 ,they consist of an addition to the building for girls1 nearly doubling its capacity for lodgers2 to the dining room1 furnishing nearly forty more seats2 to one school room1 furnishing desks for sixty pupils1 and two convenient recitation rooms4 ,and these are all in full demand1 and the inquiry presses1 8,what shall we do next when the ,january rush comes on80 #b;d4 ,a largely increased attendance1 especially of girls1 #gi being now present as boarders1 and these new pupils come largely from remote regions1 some traveling more than #cjj miles to reach school4 ,this increase is the result of no special appeals or inducements--indeed1 until much more extensive preparations were made it would not be safe to invite a larger attendance--but grows chiefly out of the interest awakened by old pupils in their own community1 and in the schools taught by them during the summer vacation4 #c;d4 ,a very satisfactory report of vacation work by nearly all of the more than #aej who engaged in it4 7a47 ,every pupil who was competent and desired a situation in the public schools1 obtained one1 and many were taken who had made but little progress in studies1 and after all were gone1 more than a score of applications were made for teachers to be sent from here1 which could not be met from any source1 and the schools were disbanded4 7b47 ,no obstacles were met by any pupil caused by any of the white citizens of the state1 but on the contrary1 much assistance and support was cheerfully given1 and that too1 in many remote and rude regions4 7c47 ,temperance work had especial prominence and effectiveness4 ,all were provided with a good supply of suitable temperance reading1 which they distributed in connection with schools taught by them both on ,sabbath and week days4 ,this work was followed up by family visits and lectures and personal work1 so that in some counties the vote was carried for prohibition under the local option law4 99 99 99 99 99 ,georgia ,conference4 ,the ,conference of this ,state held its annual meeting in ,atlanta1 at the ,first ,church--,rev4 ,c4 ,w4 ,hawley's--from stopped at the end4 ,the preacher is a graduate of ,talladega4 ,as a good example for other ,conferences1 one evening was given to addresses in behalf of the several ,congregational ,societies1 with alternation of color as to the speakers1 but not as to the speeches4 ,supt4 ,roy reported the anniversary of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 and the ,st4 ,louis triennial1 and gave an address upon the independence of when ,i left my ,connecticut pastorate for a winter in the ,sunny ,south4 ,i cannot tell you how ,i felt1 passing along the streets1 as ,i recalled the experiences of ten years ago4 ,i shuddered as ,i neared the house where my friend1 now of ,chattanooga1 came near losing his life in the small hours of the night by the hands of masked and armed men4 ,the rush1 the rope1 the tree1 the cries for help1 the final deliverance1 and much more1 were very vivid and real to my awakened mind4 ,i thought1 also1 of those eight consecutive nights when none of our family lay down to rest as usual2 of the armed guard of twenty brave men in and about the house all those nights2 of the warning letters received1 the threats made1 the ,henry rifles in our chairs when we bowed around our family altar2 of the preaching with hands in my pocket on my revolver2 of the fear and trembling that seized us when special danger threatened2 of our isolation from all except the poor we had come to bless by our labors4 ,i thought1 too1 of the school-house1 the three hundred eager learners1 the little church of a dozen members1 the precious meetings1 the great outpouring of the ,spirit1 the hundreds of conversions1 the 8never to be forgotten0 prayers and songs--in all the most precious revival of my life4 ,as a drowning man recalls the events of a whole life in a moment1 so in an incredibly brief space of time passed before me those early experiences of missionary life in this strange land1 impossible for me now to relate4 ,all is changed now4 ,to-day the missionary is welcomed by many ,christian people in ,marion4 ,the dreadful past is fading from our minds in the love and friendship of the present4 ,sabbath morning ,i looked out upon the many cottages and cabin homes in the woods and fields all about1 while near by ,i saw the church edifice with its graceful and airy bell-tower in which hangs a choice bell from the foundry of ,veasy ,white1 of ,east ,hampton1 ,connecticut1 and the gift of the people there4 ,the house will seat three or four hundred1 is well proportioned1 nicely painted and frescoed1--the most handsome and best kept church edifice of the colored people in morning greetings1 the ,sabbath-school1 the preaching and then more hand-shaking1 were ended1 and the people willing to go to their homes4 ,the promise1 8,he shall bring all things to your remembrance10 seemed that day fulfilled4 ,precious memories of the wonderful work of grace that drew so many of them into the fold were present to all with power4 8,our hearts burned within us0 as we talked of these things there1 and 8by the way40 ,the night service1 the ,monday calls1 the informal social gathering1 the eager questions1 the manifest ,spirit's presence1 the next day's farewells--all made a deep impression on us1 and led us to feel anew that this missionary work is ,god's work1 for it was that work that inspired our hearts and was our theme from first to last4 ,this church has already put five young men into the ,christian ministry1 and is in morals1 intelligence and management a pattern worthy to be copied4 ,since my arrival home the one question that presses heaviest on my heart is1 how can we provide for the boys and girls of ,marion and other places visited that want to come to the college to school8 ,in ,childersburgh1 ,shelby ,iron ,works1 ,calera1 ,selma and ,marion1 places along the line of my journey1 ,i found many smart boys and girls anxious to become educated men and women4 ,in one place ,i found twenty-five eager to come1 not one of whom could pay more than a small part of necessary school expenses4 ,low wages1 poor crops1 the cotton worm and inherited poverty keep them where they are1 and so far as ,i can see they must live and die there in their poverty and hopelessness1 unless those whom ,god has more highly favored are moved to help them4 ,our college expenses are so low that seventy dollars will keep one pupil in school one year1 and sometimes1 on account of labor done or aid from home1 a much smaller amount will suffice4 ,we need more than one thousand dollars to be used in this way this year1 above the amounts already pledged4 ,christian education transforms these boys and girls4 ,i wish you could see the eight young men that were graduated last ,june from the ,theological ,department of the college1 and hear them preach the word to their people2 you could but say1 8,verily1 this is ,god's way and ,i must chime in with it40 ,several young men are just now entering the ,theological ,department who are every way little hand1 and ,i thought if your mother knew of ,may's sweet little prayer1 she'd like to strengthen the child's faith by getting one for ,bell like it40 ,annie thought it was a beautiful idea and hastened home to tell her mother4 ,as soon as ,mrs4 ,bennet heard ,annie's story1 a greater pain came into her heart than had been there for many a day2 for they had lately received a fortune from a rich uncle1 and she felt that her motives for simplicity and economy would not be understood4 ,her greatest anxiety1 however1 was for her children4 ,how she had prayed that the love of this money might not be to them 8the root of all evil10 and 8pierce them through with many sorrows40 ,she well knew how her precious ,annie would now be petted by the gay and fashionable1 and here had come her first great trial in this irresistible message from charming ,mrs4 ,duncan4 ,annie understood her mother's hesitation and said1 8,mamma1 wouldn't it be a pity to have little ,may think her prayer was not heard80 8,my child1 ,may did not pray for a diamond ring1 but for a gift like ,bell's4 ,perhaps if you tell ,mrs4 ,duncan ,i cannot conscientiously grant her request she will get a simple gift like one we get for ,bell40 8,oh1 mamma1 ,i never could tell ,mrs4 ,duncan that4 ,don't you think the habit of economy1 that of necessity you have practiced all these years1 may be mistaken for conscience80 8,the habit doubtless makes it easier for me to obey conscience1 but ,i cannot think ,i am mistaking one for the other10 replied ,mrs4 ,bennet4 8,but1 ma1 do you think it proper for us to live as simply now as we did when papa had a salary of only #b1jjj a year80 8,annie1 dear1 have we not been able to dress respectably1 has not our table always had well-prepared1 wholesome and appetizing food1 has not our little cottage contained all that was absolutely necessary for real home comfort80 8,yes1 ma1 we have a sweet home3 you know ,i love it4 ,i was not complaining of the past1 but why did ,god give us this fortune if ,he did not wish us to enjoy luxuries now as well as comforts80 8,i think ,he did1 ,annie4 ,i'm sure we can all now enjoy the luxury of doing good as we never have before4 ,then just think what a luxury it will be not to weary ourselves with making over worn garments4 ,we can now give them to the needy and help still others by hiring them to make our new clothing1--not that we may be idle1 but that we may have #8a heart at leisure from itself to soothe and sympathize4' ,we can have dear grandpa and grandma with us all the time4 ,we will have several cosey bed-rooms added to our cottage1 and shall not feel too poor to invite our less favored cousins and many dear friends to spend long vacations with us40 8,but1 ma1 we might do all this and still appear poor1 while if we had a grand home like ,mrs4 ,duncan1 and exquisite curtains1 and a fine carriage1 and ,bell had her diamond ring1 and we all wore expensive and stylish clothing1 everybody would know papa was rich40 8,yes1 ,annie1 and what good would it do people to know papa was rich80 8,well1 ,i cannot think of any good it would do them40 8,what good would it do us1 darling1 to have people know it80 8,oh ma1 it would be so pleasant to have every one polite to us1 and treat us beautifully as they do rich people40 8,do not all who know us treat us well1 ,annie80 8,oh yes1 ma1 very well2 but you know even strangers admire those who dress1 dine1 and drive as only the rich can40 8,now think1 ,annie1 what this consideration of strangers costs4 ,friends envy us1 the poor hate us1 the irreligious question our sincerity1 our own hearts are made vain1 if not proud1 millions are spent in useless luxuries that might bless the poor1 and--well ,annie1 this is enough for once1 isn't it8 ,when you have been in the city did you ever notice boys slowly pacing the streets and often ringing a bell1 who were all covered over with an advertisement of some sale or show80 8,yes1 mamma40 8,well1 ,i often see young ladies on the street who always remind me of these advertising boys1 as their dress makes them a walking advertisement of their father's wealth4 ,one ,sunday night1 after attending service in a very wealthy church1 ,i dreamed that all the ladies wore pocket-books on their heads instead of bonnets4 ,some were too full to be closed1 and small coin often dropped out4 ,others were tightly clasped and ornamented with all manner of precious stones4 ,a few were thin and worn1 but all were labelled with the exact amount of contents4 ,and when one lady walked in with #b1jjj1jjj blazing in diamond figures on her pocket-book how all the congregation bowed down40 8,oh mamma1 what a funny dream60 8,now ,annie1 if ,christian women would all feel that they were ,christian stewards of their ,lord's money1 and could see what foolish vanity it is to wish the world to know of their wealth1 then we should all have some comparatively definite standard of a ,christian style of living4 ,but as long as ,christian women have no guide but the varying length of a husband's purse1 we shall have no standard1 no conscience in the matter1 and the world will continue to jeer and the poor to suffer40 ,annie's dread lest ,will ,duncan and his mother should think them old-fashioned or ,puritanical1 or possibly avaricious1 was a sore temptation to her1 and once more she plead--8,but ma1 would it not be right to call this ring a thank-offering for the great dowry we have received80 8,my dear ,annie1 ,i cannot see how a gift that would simply be a badge of our wealth1 and tend to flatter the vanity of our innocent little ,bell1 would be a suitable thank-offering to the ,lord4 ,i believe in thank-offerings1 however1 and have written my dear old friend ,mrs4 ,w----1 who is engaged in missionary work ,south1 you remember1 inquiring how ,i can best help her4 ,perhaps when her reply comes you will feel differently40 ,poor ,annie avoided passing ,mrs4 ,duncan's home for two days1 dreading to speak of her mother's decision4 ,the second day the expected letter came from ,georgia4 ,it told of a delicate little colored girl--a graduate of the ,higher ,normal ,department of an ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,school4 ,this girl's father had run away #aej in debt1 and the home that sheltered the little family was to be sold at sheriff's sale to pay the debt4 ,this girl found a man who would pay it and wait for her to pay him in small sums as she earned it by teaching4 ,as soon as this was paid she begged her sister to go to the school from which she graduated4 ,the sister thought she was too old to begin to go to school again1 and could not be persuaded till at last she was told--8,now ,sis1 kind friends at the ,north have helped me get my education and ,i am going to send some poor girl to that same school1 and if you don't go1 some one else will be glad of my help40 ,so now she is paying nine dollars a month for that sister's board and tuition1 and buys her books and clothes1 better ones1 too1 than she wore herself4 ,a letter was also enclosed from this girl to her old teacher1 begging for help to build a school house where she is now teaching4 ,so besides educating her sister she is trying to build a school house4 ,but ,i have the letter and will let the girl tell her own story3 8,dear ,friend1 ,mrs4 ,w----3 ,i know you are very busy1 and will not want to hear the word #8building1' but ,i don't know whom else to write to4 ,we have paid #ga4gj on an acre of land for our school lot4 ,we have #fh4cj to pay and twelve months to pay it in1 with no interest4 ,we want to ask the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 if they will help us build a school house4 ,we can begin now as soon as we are able4 ,we want the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 to take full control of the house and the building of it1 and we will help all we can4 ,we want this to be a school for everybody4 ,we have six men as trustees of the land1 and have worked hard and are working still4 99 99 99 ,the whites are helping us and urging us to go on4 ,three white men gave #e apiece1 and others less4 ,they were a little careful about giving this time1 as money has been solicited twice before for the same purpose1 so most of them would put their names down and say1 #8,come when you are ready for it4' ,there was no trouble in getting it yesterday when we went for it4 ,i was anxious to decide the matter and make a payment yesterday4 ,i'll try to get my money to you by the #ajth for sister4 8,very truly1 -------- --------0 ,when ,annie got home from school she read both letters with great interest1 but said1 8,ma1 don't you suppose such letters are sometimes gotten up for effect80 8,perhaps they are1 but ,i am sure this one was not1 for you know ,i wrote asking for some case of pressing need1 and the girl's letter never could have been written for my eyes1 as it is dated some weeks ago40 8,but1 ma1 ,i have seen some missionaries who are so long-faced and sanctimonious that some way ,i can't enjoy their reports40 8,i am glad you hate cant1 ,annie4 ,so do ,i1 but if you should see this friend of mine who wrote that letter1 you'd feel very sure there was none of it about her4 ,she is one of the merriest1 sunniest1 most genial ladies ,i ever knew4 ,and ,i never knew a person hate shams or pretense of any kind more thoroughly than she4 ,how ,i wish you had been home when she was here two years ago2 but you must take the letter to ,mrs4 ,duncan1 for she is a dear friend of hers too40 8,is she1 ma8 ,i'm so glad40 ,annie stopped next morning at ,mrs4 ,duncan's and left the letter with the servant at the door1 saying she'd call for it on her way home4 ,when she called in the afternoon1 ,mrs4 ,duncan told her how delighted she'd been to hear from her old school friend1 and that she must certainly help that brave little colored girl build her school house4 ,annie then ventured timidly to say her ma felt she ought to do that instead of buying so expensive a gift for ,bell4 8,now1 ,annie1 that is just like your sweet mother10 said ,mrs4 ,duncan4 8,i wish ,i was half as good4 ,i did hope1 though1 little ,may's prayer might be answered40 8,ma says it might be if you could get a simple gift like the one we get ,bell10 shyly suggests ,annie4 8,sure enough10 exclaimed ,mrs4 ,duncan2 8how stupid ,i was not to think of that4 ,i'll do it1 and then ,i'll have twice much to give the little ,georgia missionary40 ,so the two mothers purchased for the children inexpensive gifts1 and sent to the ,georgia colored girl a generous donation for her chosen work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts
