it with more of gratitude and hopefulness than we have been privileged to do for many years4 ,like ,bunyan's ,pilgrim1 we have passed through the ,slough of ,despond1 and the heavy load of ,debt has fallen from our shoulders2 but1 as in the case of the ,pilgrim1 this is no signal to us1 or our friends1 for rest in the ,arbor1 but for addressing ourselves to the real ,christian life-work before us4 #a4 ,in this we have many things to encourage us3 7#a47 ,the renewed prosperity of the country puts it into the hands of our friends to aid us in the needed enlargement of the work before us4 ,we are grateful for the help given in the dark days of business stagnation1 and we hope that with the reviving industry and commercial activity1 gratitude to ,god and love for ,his cause will stimulate the friends of the poor to increased liberality4 7#b47 ,there is a more full realization of the importance of our work4 ,never before since the war has the ,north so well understood that the only real solution of the ,southern problem is in the intelligence and real piety of the ,,freedmen4 ,every day's developments make this the more plain4 ,in like manner the rights and wrongs of the ,,indian never forced him upon public attention with a more imperative demand for answer4 ,so1 too1 the right of the ,,chinaman to a home and legal protection on the ,pacific coast1 has never become more clearly defined or more intelligently recognized4 ,constitutional enactments and hoodlum mobs have only set forth his wrongs more sharply and made our duty more plain4 ,africa looms up with more distinctness as a field of ,christian labor4 ,not only triumphant exploration and crowding missionary enterprises stir the ,christian heart1 but the very difficulties and disasters arouse new zeal4 ,our hopeful endeavors to introduce the colored man of ,america as a missionary to the land of his fathers adds a new element of hope and activity4 7#c47 ,the most encouraging outlook before us1 however1 is in the deeper spiritual and prayerful interest which our work awakens4 ,among other signs of this fact are the aroused attention of the praying women of the ,north to the woes and wants of the colored women and girls in the ,south1 the increasing volume of prayer going up from the churches of the ,north for ,africa1 and the prayer and consecration awakened in its behalf among the colored people of the ,south4 ,but above all1 we believe that the followers of ,christ are coming to realize that in this whole range of work it is only in the ,divine arm that effectual help can be found4 #b4 ,we have a great work before us4 7#a47 ,in our own special field we have the urgent call to make the repairs and improvements which we were compelled to refuse when in our great struggle for the payment of the debt4 ,these can no longer be denied1 in some cases1 without sacrificing the health of the missionaries and teachers1 as well as the progress of the work4 7#b47 ,the call for enlargement confronts us on all sides4 ,we cannot meet the demand in the public mind at the ,north if we stand still1 and still less can we meet that of overcrowded schools and for new churches in the ,south4 ,we refer our readers to the following article for some stirring details on this subject4 7#c47 ,our friends need to be on their guard against one incidental drawback4 ,the ,presidential election occurs this year1 and the experience of this1 and all other missionary societies1 shows that such years mark diminished receipts4 ,we can only say to our friends3 ,do your duty at the ballot-box1 but do not forget the contribution-box and the prayer for missions6 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,enlarged ,,work4 ,we have been saying for a long time1 when we are free from debt we will do more work1 and now that we are free1 we have felt constrained at once to begin the fulfillment of that promise4 ,the great question is to find the just mean between cowardice and rashness4 ,no organization like ours can say1 we will never spend a cent that we have not in our treasury1 for we have to make engagements amounting to many times the sum at our present command4 ,we must follow the leadings of ,providence not only1 but its indications1 and rely on ,god's people to sustain us in our anticipations of what they will do4 ,in our ,salutation to our friends1 we spoke of the call for the enlargement of our work that confronts us on all sides4 ,during the struggle of the past few years for the payment of our debt1 we could have but one answer for the pressing appeals that came to us for more room and better accommodations--an answer which was hard to give and hard to receive1 for those who saw so clearly the great good that would result from a comparatively slight expenditure of money4 ,but now that the debt is paid1 our friends must tell us whether we can venture to make a different and more cheering answer to our appeals4 ,these appeals are coming to us from ,mississippi1 ,louisiana1 ,alabama1 ,georgia1 ,north ,carolina1 c41 as may be seen by noticing the 8,items from the ,field10 in this number of the ,,missionary4 ,these items were taken without any special reference to this article1 and surprise us1 as we glance over them1 by the needs which they disclose4 ,in addition to these1 we give just here a few extracts from letters not quoted in our 8,items40 ,one teacher writes3 8,our school opened with a rush4 ,it reminded me of the time when ,i used to attend lectures at ,l--4 ,a crowd would assemble1 and as soon as the doors were opened they would press in1 each intent on the best seat4 ,so it was in my schoolroom1 each parent striving to get the first chance to enter his child or children2 and ever since the opening1 ,i have had to turn away applicants1 though they begged with tears to be admitted40 ,another3 8,if our number increases this year in the same proportion as two years ago1 in ,february we shall have #aba boarders2 if the same proportion as last year1 we shall have #acd4 ,we can not find room for any such number4 ,from present prospects we shall reach that number4 ,if anything is going to be done by way of enlarging this year1 we ought to order lumber immediately40 ,and in a subsequent letter3 8,we have more young women boarding than we have had at any time before since ,i have been here1 and several others have engaged rooms4 ,every room in the ,ladies' ,hall is filled4 ,two rooms have four in them4 ,miss ,e4 expects to arrange beds in the sitting-room4 ,we cannot put four into our #aj x #ad rooms4 ,the new scholars this fall have mostly come from schools that have been taught by our pupils1 and have been able to go into the ,preparatory ,department40 ,still another3 8,something must be done for our relief at once4 ,we are overrunning full40 ,from another the story is3 8,i wonder if all your stations have such increasing wants as this one has6 ,we trust that our request for another teacher is honored by an appointment4 ,we intimated that our wants would still increase4 ,this is verified4 ,the question now before us is this3 ,how much enlargement of this work can you make8 ,are your means equal to the demand8 ,now1 we wish that our building were larger by two rooms2 especially so1 since many tell us that a large number are planning to begin school after ,christmas4 ,we submit very earnestly the proposal that we be authorized to rent a building that is contiguous to our grounds1 and that you send a sixth teacher to occupy it4 ,if we do thorough work this year1 the demand another year will require a permanent enlargement of room4 ,we unite in the most earnest wish that you not only send us the fifth teacher1 but also the sixth40 ,we have already appropriated several thousand dollars more than in previous years upon the ,southern field1 and that mainly in the work of ,christian education4 ,if our readers only knew the many things we have not done1 they would count the expansion to be very little4 ,among other things1 as was indicated in the ,annual ,report1 and as is set forth more explicitly elsewhere1 we have enlarged our ,indian work1 not in the far ,west1 but in ,virginia4 ,we have allowed something more for the foreign field1 and added a few hundred dollars for the ,chinese ,mission in ,california4 ,our friends will have the satisfaction this year of knowing that their gifts all go to do the work which presses now2 no more is needed to fill up the hollows of the land through which we travelled long ago4 ,they must not fail us1 then1 who have helped us in our distress2 but much more1 stand by us1 now that they have enabled us to give ourselves wholly to the wants to be met and to the work in hand4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,professor ,,chase ,,in ,,africa4 ,it has for some months seemed desirable to the ,executive ,committee that an experienced man1 in the carefulness of whose inspection and the calmness of whose judgment they might fully rely1 should go to see for them1 with his own eyes1 the field on the ,west ,coast of ,africa1 the missionary band1 and the work it is doing4 ,the great difficulty has been to lay hands upon a man who should unite with the qualifications required the willingness and the ability to go4 ,that obstacle has given way at last1 and an embassy is on the way4 ,prof4 ,thomas ,n4 ,chase had been detailed from his duties as an instructor in ,greek at ,atlanta1 where his eminent abilities have been most fully proved by the annual examinations of his classes1 and where his presence has been valued for his manifold service1 for special duties in superintending the plans and erection of buildings in the ,southern field4 ,some important preliminary work had been accomplished in that direction1 when it was found that the money which was anticipated for this purpose would not be at the disposal of the ,association for some months4 ,prof4 ,chase being thus open to our call1 and being the man of all men we should have chosen for this post1 the proposal was made to him that he should take this trip to the ,mendi ,mission1 and inspect the work4 ,after some hesitation1 but with much less than was anticipated1 and regarding the circumstances and the call as of the ,lord1 he consented1 with the full agreement in his decision of his excellent and devoted wife4 ,on the sixth of ,december he sailed from ,new ,york for ,liverpool1 expecting to take the steamer thence to ,freetown on the twentieth of ,december1 and to be in the field at ,good ,hope by the middle of ,january4 ,he is accompanied by the ,rev4 ,joseph ,e4 ,smith1 a graduate of ,atlanta1 who has been for three years in charge of important churches in the ,south1 and in whom we have every reason to place the highest confidence4 ,mr4 ,smith will1 we hope1 conclude to remain with the mission1 although that matter is left to his decision4 ,we believe that he will do what he thinks the ,master wishes4 ,meanwhile he will do good service as a companion of ,prof4 ,chase1 to care for him and aid him in the accomplishment of his work4 ,important questions as to the permanent location of the stations1 the distribution of the work among the missionaries1 and their more complete equipment will be decided1 and with the ,lord's blessing on them we hope for results of lasting value from this embassy4 ,it is just the time of the year when such a mission can most safely and effectively be prosecuted4 ,they will reach the country and have three mouths of the dry season1 if so long a time shall be needed1 before it will be necessary that they should come away4 ,they realize1 as we do1 that there is always some peril in going to the ,west ,coast1 especially for a white man2 but the professor is in his prime1 of sound health1 and we believe will be so prudent in all matters of exposure and of living that we have no great fears for him4 ,and yet1 when we remember those who have fallen1 we pray the ,lord1 and beg all the friends of ,africa to join with us in the prayer1 that ,he will keep these ,his servants from harm1 will prosper them in their mission and bring them back in health4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,indian ,,boys ,,at ,,hampton4 ,the ,association has1 after conference with ,general ,armstrong1 decided to make appropriations to aid the ,indian work at ,hampton as follows3 7#a47 ,it agrees to pay the salary of a teacher1 whose time is wholly devoted to this work1 and whose enthusiasm and success in it no one who attended the last commencement can have failed to remember4 7#b47 ,it will support these three boys3 ,james ,murie1 a ,pawnee from the ,indian ,territory1 a bright boy1 who is now in the ,preparatory ,department1 and will be able to enter the ,junior ,class next year2 ,jonathan ,heustice1 a ,pawnee with some colored blood1 apparently a very good boy2 and ,alexander ,peters1 a ,menomonee from ,wisconsin1 who comes well recommended by his teachers1 and is proving an interesting scholar4 7#c47 ,it will clothe the eight boys from ,fort ,berthold ,agency1 sent by the ,government last year1 and for whose support it is mainly responsible4 ,the total expense will be #a1dej4 ,we shall be very glad to receive contributions to this work1 or for any of these boys in particular1 from those who are specially interested in this new work of educating ,indian boys in our colored schools4 ,the success of the effort has been so marked1 that we no longer look on it as an experiment4 ,it is the application to this class of the same principle on which we believe the solution of the great problem of negro citizenship depends4 ,let us educate the teachers and the leaders for these races1 keeping them constantly surrounded by the most elevating ,christian influences1 and they will have great power in lifting up the masses1 who must be taught and ,christianized at home4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the news of the destruction of ,academic ,hall at ,hampton1 has reached the friends of that ,institution long ere this4 ,the origin of the fire is unknown2 it was discovered in the attic1 and was already beyond control4 ,in a couple of hours all was over4 ,an insurance amounting to about three-quarters of the expense incurred in building will1 in the lower prices now prevailing1 replace it to a great extent4 ,still it is a severe loss4 ,the value of the excellent organization of the school was made apparent in the perfect order which prevailed4 ,the honesty and loyalty of the students were thoroughly tested and triumphantly proved4 ,only a single day of school work was lost4 ,about #c1jjj will replace the loss on apparatus1 furniture1 library1 c4 ,the students lost about #a1bjj of personal property4 ,we trust that the friends of ,hampton--and they are many--will come ,sunday-school banners1 maps and every thing of the kind4 ,are there not ,sunday-schools who have such material they have outgrown or laid aside1 and which they can send to us for the dark-skinned children of the ,south8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,satisfied4 ,he shall see of the travail of his soul1 and shall be satisfied4--,there are many motives which combine to urge the disciples of ,christ to energy and fidelity in the missionary work3 the wretchedness of those who lie in the darkness of heathendom1 and especially in the black night of savage superstition2 the wrongs and crimes which the introduction of a ,christian civilization would in time efface2 our sad anticipations for those on whom we must believe the ,lord will look with merciful and just consideration1 and yet who are surely not fit for the kingdom of ,god4 ,the fact of the command of ,christ were enough1 and especially that this was ,his last and parting charge4 ,but1 amid all these1 is there a motive so sweet and still so energizing as that which we have written above--that in the contemplation of ,his salvation accomplished among men1 the joy of our ,lord shall be full1 the purpose of ,his love attained1 and ,he content to have endured the flesh and the cross8 ,if we love ,him because ,he first loved us1 let us remember that ,his love was not a sentiment1 but a sacrifice2 that it was measured by what ,he did for us1 and for our salvation2 and that it is the sacred claim of ,his love upon ours1 that what sacrifice by us of time1 or strength1 or means1 or life itself1 may contribute to the fullness of ,his joy1 to the completeness of ,his satisfaction1 we should give with cheerful and continuous readiness4 ,other motives may bear upon us with now greater and now less force2 special calls may be heard with more or less distinctness2 unusual disclosures of need may make us eager to relieve2 but through all1 and under all1 and greater than all1 is this1 that we may please our ,lord1 and contribute to repair the rest of it4 ,eight weeks were thus occupied1 during which they received great kindness from the chief and people of ,uzongora1 a tribe which met ,stanley with great violence4 ,they arrived ,november sixth at ,uganda4 ,mtesa continued to treat them well1 despite the efforts of the ,arabs to prejudice him against them4 ,mr4 ,wilson had gone to meet the three missionaries who were coming to reinforce them by way of the ,nile4 ,mr4 ,mackay was teaching reading by charts to a large number of old and young4 ,some valuable conclusions have been reached by their experience--that they do not need ordained men yet so much as those experienced in practical work4 8,unless we succeed in elevating labor1 we shall get hearers1 but no doers4 ,hence slavery--domestic1 at least--cannot cease2 and if slavery does not cease1 polygamy will remain40 ,the need of ,english traders to take the place of the ,arabs1 who want slaves1 is emphasized4 ,the cost of maintenance is very trifling3 #cj says3 8,it would seem1 from communications which have just been received1 that the wiles of ,french ,jesuits have already brought trouble to these missionaries4 ,a letter of introduction1 written by ,lord ,salisbury to ,king ,mtesa1 was read1 and gave great satisfaction4 ,soon after the arrival of the ,jesuits the aspect of affairs was changed4 ,the king accused the missionaries of playing him false1 an untruthful report having reached him that the ,egyptians were advancing their posts more to the south4 ,some months passed in a very unsatisfactory manner1 and at length one of the missionaries was allowed to go to ,egypt to prepare the way for the king's messengers1 who were to be accompanied by ,mr4 ,wilson2 two more were permitted to return to the south side of the lake1 #8on condition that they would thence send on to ,mtesa some mission stores left there4' ,at the end of ,june1 three remained at ,uganda1 without the necessary facilities either to carry on their mission work or to withdraw4 ,with such troubles they are beset1 through the combined intrigues of the enemies of corporeal and spiritual freedom40 --,the same paper says that no direct tidings have been received from the ,london ,missionary ,society's agents at ,ujiji on the ,tanganika1 and ascribes this break in communication to the ,arab slave traders1 and only hopes that their hostility has been limited to intercepting letters4 ,dr4 ,kirk1 the consul at ,zanzibar1 has been instructed to institute inquiries4 ,dr4 ,laws1 of the mission at ,livingstonia 7,scotch71 has been requested to send messengers to ,ujiji to learn the condition4 ,great solicitude is felt1 and a day of special prayer for ,divine guidance and help has been appointed4 ,the last accounts in the ,chronicle of the ,london ,missionary ,society report the death of ,rev4 ,a4 ,w4 ,dodgshun seven days after his arrival at ,ujiji1 on the way to which place he lost nearly all the goods belonging to that part of the expedition1 and the successful progress through ,ugogo of ,messrs4 ,southon and ,griffith3 they were in good health1 and confident of reaching their destination shortly4 --,the ,london ,telegraph1 of ,oct4 #bb1 says3 8,all alike will be interested in the following extract from a letter which has just been received from ,mr4 ,stanley1 the famous ,african explorer1 by an intimate friend4 ,the letter is dated from ,banana ,point1 at the mouth of the ,congo ,river1 ,sept4 #ac1 and says3 #8,all this year ,i have been very busy1 and have worked hard4 ,i have equipped one expedition on the ,east ,coast2 have reconstructed another--namely1 the ,international--of whose misfortune we have heard so often1 and have explored personally several new districts on the ,east ,coast4 ,having finished my work satisfactorily to myself1 my friends and those who sent me1 ,i came through the ,mediterranean and round to this spot1 where ,i arrived two years and four months ago1 on that glorious day on which we sighted old ocean after our rash descent of the ,livingstone4 99 99 99 ,and now ,i begin another mission seriously and deliberately1 with a grand object in view4 ,i am charged to open--and keep open1 if possible--all such districts and countries as ,i may explore for the commercial world4 ,the mission is supported by a philanthropic society which numbers noble-minded men of several nations4 ,it is not a religious society1 but my instructions are entirely of that spirit4 ,no violence must be used1 and wherever rejected1 the mission must withdraw to seek another field4 ,we have abundant means1 and1 therefore1 we are to purchase the very atmosphere1 if any demands be made upon us1 rather than violently oppose them4 ,in fact1 we must freely buy of all and every1 rather than resent1 and you know the sailor's commandment--#8,obey orders if it breaks owners'--is easier to keep than to stand upon one's rights4'0 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,freedmen4 ,,rev4 ,,jos4 ,e4 ,,roy1 far-reaching influence for good that one of the higher institutions of the ,american ,missionary ,association is exerting1 than by listening to the reports of the students as they return from their summer's work of teaching4 ,at ,atlanta ,university the first ,sunday afternoon of the fall term is devoted to these reports1 and to the teachers it is one of the happiest and most inspiring occasions of the whole year4 ,we wish that many of the readers of the ,,missionary could have been with us on last ,sunday1 and seen with their own eyes and heard with their own ears1 since the full rich tones of voice1 dignified composure and simple earnestness of these student-teachers cannot be transferred to paper4 ,but ,i did not see you present1 and so will give you the benefit of some notes ,i took down1 departing from my original plan of arranging and classifying the 8testimony10 omitting quotation marks1 and introducing the successive speakers simply by beginning on a new line4 ,i taught in ,tatnal4 ,other pupils were afraid to go there because it was a democratic county4 ,people did not want a teacher from outside of the county1 because they did not want the money to go out of the county4 ,they liked me very much4 ,colored people have from one acre to #bejj acres of land1 and are about as well educated as the whites4 ,children are compelled by their parents to come to ,sunday-school4 ,i kept up a ,sunday evening prayer-meeting4 ,several of the children acknowledged ,jesus and turned over to the church4 ,i made two or three speeches on temperance4 ,my ,commissioner is well disposed toward this ,institution4 ,i made two or three lectures against intemperance1 and encouraged the people to educate themselves and accumulate property4 ,at my exhibition three lawyers were present and forty or fifty other whites4 ,the ,commissioner did not examine me1 saying that this school was the best in the world and he never intended to examine a pupil from it4 ,he was a ,saturday-,sunday man and did not do any business on ,saturday4 ,i tramped a week and a half for a school and found one on ,col4 ----'s place4 ,parents want their children whipped1 and do not think they are taught any thing unless they are whipped4 ,some of us had a convention on temperance1 tobacco and morals4 ,the colored people own a good deal of land and make lots of cotton4 ,one man made twenty-one bales1 but saved only eighty dollars4 ,col4 ---- said ,atlanta ,university must be the best disciplined school in the ,state4 ,the poor whites do not want to go to school1 and are more intemperate and degraded than the blacks4 ,if the colored man would only stand up for his rights1 he would not be hacked4 ,i taught in a district called 8,dark ,corner40 ,i think ,i gave them a right start4 ,had a prayer meeting which was largely attended4 ,poor whites use more whiskey than the colored people4 ,whites seem kind to blacks1 lend them money and horses1 and help them in every way4 ,i had an average attendance of thirty-three and a night-school of fifteen4 ,taught on an old plantation1 on which there used to be five hundred slaves4 ,ignorance has great sway there4 ,people have good stock1 but cannot buy land4 ,there is a temperance lodge in ,camden of one hundred and forty members4 ,it was a bad county where ,i taught4 ,i was careful about teaching there4 ,they never had a school before4 ,no land is owned by colored people4 ,there is much opposition to their education4 ,the immorality of the place is explained by the fact that they formerly had stills there4 ,preachers are not moral men4 ,they are opposed to 8foreign0 teachers4 ,poor whites create a good deal of disturbance4 ,land is owned by those who owned it during slavery times1 and they will not sell it to white or colored4 ,i was the first lady teacher that taught in the county and was quite a novelty4 ,they had bad teachers4 ,one white one was intemperate4 ,white people were friendly4 ,three whites raised their hats to me1 which was quite a new thing4 ,i had a very good ,sunday-school2 white people attended my exhibition4 ,they like this ,university very much1 and the ,commissioner wanted me to encourage the boys and girls to come up4 ,most everybody uses whiskey and tobacco4 ,i talked on temperance1 distributed temperance papers and read to them4 ,took the ,new ,york ,witness and read it to the people4 ,i think ,i did some good among the children4 ,the children of the poor whites are knocking about on the road all the time4 ,they had a school one month1 then gave it up4 ,young men spend ,sunday in gambling2 guess they are doing it right now4 ,some said ,i was not teaching them anything because ,i did not use the blue-back speller4 ,the houses of poor whites are just like the colored1 but their clothes are not so good4 ,the people where ,i taught are intelligent and well-to-do4 ,most of them own their own homes4 ,the whites want the colored people educated4 ,a speaker at an exhibition of a female seminary said that the colored people were leaving them in the dark1 and if they did not look out1 the bottom rail would be on the top4 ,six or eight colored people own from one hundred to five hundred acres and stock4 ,the ,commissioner's wife asked me into the parlor and gave me a rocking-chair4 ,where ,i was last winter1 the people kept ,thanksgiving4 ,of course ,i enjoyed that1 because ,i knew you were keeping it here4 ,i had a ,sunday-school that was quite large at first1 but when big meetings came on it grew small4 ,i had seventy-five pupils4 ,i cannot see that ,i did much good1 but ,i hope some good will come out of my summer's work4 ,public sentiment seems to sanction the worst things there are4 ,the people where ,i taught said they must have a man1 that females could not teach1 and they could not stand ladies4 ,the whites1 on the whole1 are better to the teachers than the colored people are4 ,i succeeded in getting six men to stop using tobacco while attending school1 and then they said if they could stop fifty-five days they could all their life-time4 ,somehow they looked at me like they looked at ,columbus when he first came to ,america4 ,preachers are all intemperate men1 and some of them said they could not preach well unless they had some whiskey in them4 ,i taught four times in the same place1 and have had a larger school each time4 ,the morals of the colored people depend on the morals of the whites4 ,i opened school at eight and closed at six4 ,i saw no intemperance1 because it was the wrong time of the year4 ,i talked temperance and acted it4 ,there is but little difference between the whites and colored2 they eat together1 sleep together1 and have the same kind of houses4 ,now to these reports1 only a small part of which ,i have copied1 ,i will add a few comments3 #a4 ,there is no diminution of the desire of colored children to learn1 and of their parents to have their children educated4 ,parents want teachers to teach from early dawn to candle-light1 and even to beat knowledge into the pupils4 #b4 ,intemperance and licentiousness abound to a fearful extent1 not only among the laity1 but also among the clergy4 #c4 ,the poor whites need education and moral and religious instruction as much as the colored people1 and our students are reaching some of them in their influence4 #d4 ,public school privileges in the ,south are limited1 and it will be a long time before suitable buildings are provided and efficient teaching secured4 #e4 ,the whites are1 in the main1 well disposed toward the colored people1 and in favor of their being educated4 #f4 ,many of the colored people are acquiring homes and other property1 although in some places the owners of land will not sell it4 #g4 ,in some instances the colored people are cheated out of the benefits of their labor1 and ill-treated in various ways4 #h4 ,atlanta ,university stands high in the estimation of the people1 and needs liberal pecuniary support from its friends to keep up its reputation and do the great work that lies before it4 #i4 ,social prejudice seems to be yielding somewhat1 although the fact that a white lady invited a colored girl to sit in a rocking-chair in her parlor1 is not so common an occurrence as to make it unworthy of mention4 ,tidiness1 gentility1 intelligence and morality will yet be considered superior to a light complexion4 #aj4 ,the hope of this race1 as well as of any other1 lies in the training of children1 and hence the value of good schools1 both day and ,sunday4 #aa4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association is doing a valuable work among the whites1 by showing them what education will do for poor people1 and stimulating them to try to keep the 8top-rail0 where it is4 #ab4 ,no one can estimate the influence our school is exerting in favor of education1 industry1 economy1 temperance1 ,sabbath observance1 chastity1 social order1 and1 in short1 morality and religion4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,woman',s ,,work ,,for ,,woman4 ,,miss ,,laura ,a4 ,,parmelee1 ,,memphis1 ,,tenn4 ,we give the closing portion of a paper read at the ,woman's ,meeting1 held in connection with the ,annual ,meeting at ,chicago4 ,in the opening portions of it1 ,miss ,parmelee describes with frank truthfulness the perils which encircle the colored girls of the ,south by reason of the family habits1 the laxity of the marriage relation1 the ignorance of the laws of health1 the late hours of their religious and social gatherings1 c4 ,we print her statements and suggestions as to the remedy and protection4 ,of special agencies for training colored girls to better habits1 boarding schools claim the first place4 ,if there had been seventy1 instead of seven homes of this kind1 we could to-day report a fairer record of virtue and purity4 ,under the constant supervision of faithful teachers1 who regulate the hours1 walks and visits of those in their charge1 there is opportunity to acquire a love for systematic ways and a pure home life4 ,with the instinctive imitation of their race they adopt the manners and sentiments of the ladies living under the same roof and sitting at the same table4 ,yet with this help1 there has been frequent occasion for teachers to ponder the story of the young crabs that went from the sea-side to a seminary among the mountains1 where they became ashamed of their own gait and diligently tried to learn the new way of walking1 succeeding to the entire satisfaction of their teachers as well as themselves1 and seeming to have forgotten the old ways1 but1 upon returning to parents and friends at the shore1 relinquished the accomplishment and walked backwards as in other days4 ,in two or three schools--possibly more1 but ,i speak only from personal knowledge--it is the duty of one of the lady teachers to give the girls instruction in dress1 manners1 morals and health1 particularly in matters relating to their peculiar physical organization4 ,once a week the regular lessons are postponed or laid aside1 that the pupils may have a half hour for listening to the lecture that has been thoughtfully prepared for their exclusive benefit4 ,commencing with points of etiquette1 dress1 sketches of lives of famous women1 announcing the latest fashion items when they happen to be suitable1 and so winning the confidence and arousing the interest of the class1 it is comparatively easy to come to graver counsels concerning morals1 health1 danger of association with people of loose principles1 the lowering of standards of personal honor1 and finally the teaching properly due a daughter from her mother's lips4 ,this branch of work is neither light nor pleasant4 ,false delicacy1 fear of speaking injudiciously and of being misunderstood by the girls and their mothers1 too long kept us silent4 ,we shrank from meeting our full responsibility in this direction1 and nerved ourselves to the task only when circumstances convinced us that it was an imperative duty4 ,the ordinary study of physiology is good1 but in colored schools something more is needed4 ,teach young girls to reverence the body1 to regard all its functions as gifts of ,god1 and the possibilities of motherhood to be sacredly guarded1 and they are transformed from animals to thoughtful women4 ,do any regard this as dangerous argument8 ,those who have tried the experiment are satisfied of its worth4 ,more sensible and healthful modes of dress1 increasing discretion of manners and modesty of deportment1 are immediate results of a plan that a few regarded as an innovation1 but which has abundantly justified itself4 ,if every well-established school of the ,american ,missionary ,association could be furnished with models for this purpose1 far more good would be accomplished than with empty hands1 however wise the teacher's lips4 ,these health talks include cookery1 sanitary measures1 medical hints1 and a thousand items of common information in a land of newspapers1 but unknown to people who depend upon neighborhood gossip for all their knowledge4 ,as teachers became better acquainted with the needs of their fields1 sewing lessons were given1 or sewing schools established in connection with daily work4 ,while teaching deft use of the needle1 to mend old garments and cut new1 there is opportunity to speak apt words about love of finery1 habits of wastefulness or extravagance1 and improper hours1 all of which find quick lodgment in minds eager for new ideas4 ,it is no slight gratification to teachers that1 in large assemblies1 they can select their students by a more quiet1 suitable dress and dignified bearing4 ,house-to-house visiting is another important means of elevating the homes and making 8life among the lowly0 cleaner and purer4 ,in the early days of labor for the ,freedmen1 ladies were commissioned by the ,american ,missionary ,association for this purpose4 ,it is encouraging to note that1 through the parent society1 the ,christian women of the ,north are adopting representatives to carry on this branch of work more systematically4 ,year by year there are changes in methods1 and teachers have less time than formerly for this outside visiting4 ,honorable mention must be made of the part ,congregational churches bear in this work of regeneration4 ,too much time would be consumed in explaining the opposition they meet1 or the great need of planting this little leaven that is already moving the mass of blind superstition4 ,suffice it to say1 that one of the two denominations claiming the religious loyalty of the ,freedmen insists that1 once in ,christ1 a soul is forever safe1 and can commit sin with impunity1 because forgiveness frees from all restraints of the law4 ,the other great body of believers is equally false in its explanations of truths held by followers of ,whitefield and ,wesley4 ,these are the principal agencies operating for the redemption of the colored homes1 and through them for the emancipation of ,africa1 latest called of nations1 now stretching out imploring hands for the light1 and health1 and hope1 streaming from the cross of ,christ4 ,i will not stop to detail incidents illustrating various phases of the one great plan1 nor recount successes attained1 nor introduce you to the homes--truly homelike in peace1 purity and domestic love2 or to the little centres of social influence1 where refinement and virtue invite your respect and friendship4 ,there are such homes and circles1 although they are not sufficiently numerous to have the power in their communities that they deserve4 ,between the graduates of ,atlanta or ,fisk1 and the toilers in cotton patch or rice swamp--between the better homes of ,memphis or ,charleston1 and the cabins in piney woods or ,louisiana glades--there is a great gulf1 to be spanned only by the prayers and labors of ,northern ,christians4 ,i have chosen not to paint prospects and aspirations of the dwellers this side of that chasm2 but rather to give you a glimpse of life beyond in the darkness1 that you may comprehend in some degree the urgency of the need to chase away the clouds that obscure the light of hope and purity4 ,i have thought it possible for women to do more than they have heretofore in distinct efforts for their own sex2 that some new effort might be made to efficiently supplement the work of schools and churches4 ,two years ago1 we made a bold venture at ,le ,moyne ,normal ,school4 ,health talks had become popular1 and the teachers were convinced of the wisdom of taking further steps in that direction1 when1 most opportunely1 there came to ,memphis a lady physician1 well advanced in years1 of evident culture1 and provided with an excellent life-size model of the human frame4 ,she was invited to lecture to our female pupils and their mothers1 and did so very acceptably4 ,her gray hair commanded respect1 although the girls were at first a little suspicious of the manikin4 ,satisfied with the effect upon the students and of the lady's good judgment1 her services were secured for a course of lectures1 to which the friends of the girls were invited4 ,it was a happy idea1 as was quickly proven4 ,i cannot tell how many times teachers were thanked for the privileges thus afforded1 or how many mothers exclaimed1 8,if ,i had only known these things sooner1 ,i should have saved myself and my children worlds of sickness and trouble and disgrace60 ,ever since that experiment ,i have longed to see a similar opportunity offered to all the colored women4 ,if a discreet1 motherly woman1 who understood anatomy1 hygiene and medicine1 could be furnished with a model of the body and sent through the large cities and villages1 giving free lectures upon health1 care of their own persons1 proper food1 training of children1 and responsibility to ,god for the chastity of their sons and daughters1 the ,freedwomen would receive incalculable benefit4 ,the teachers cannot always reach out and control the mothers2 the missionary meets but a part of the women in a single city2 but an itinerating lady physician could influence thousands of the very class most in need of the instruction she could give4 ,i wish the heart of some woman1 qualified for the undertaking1 would be stirred to consecrate herself to this work4 ,i think the officers of the ,association would indorse such a movement4 ,certainly1 pastors and teachers in the field would heartily welcome her to their churches and homes1 to which she would be a valuable auxiliary1 while exerting a more positive and direct influence upon the women than is possible from any one of the already established methods of work4 ,dean ,howson says3 8,how can you convert a country unless you convert the families8 ,how can you convert the families unless you convert the mothers80 ,it was once my privilege to minister to an honored friend who was gently falling asleep in ,jesus4 ,happening to draw up a window-shade an hour before the eyes closed upon the scenes of mortal life1 ,i received from the beloved lips this last commendation and counsel3 8,that's right2 give us more light40 ,speaking to-day in behalf of our colored sisters1 ,i appeal for light4 8,give us more light0 to dispel the heavy clouds of ignorance and sin1 to show plainly straight paths for the feet of stumbling ones1 and for the praise of ,him who is able to keep us from falling1 and to present us faultless before the presence of ,his glory with exceeding joy4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,georgia ,,conference4 ,,rev4 ,c4,w4 ,,hawley4 ,the ,georgia ,congregational ,conference1 from which ,i have just returned1 is a large body1 if an extensive framework can make it so4 ,my share of the travel to its second annual session at ,savannah was about six hundred miles4 ,of the fourteen churches1 two of which are in ,south ,carolina1 all save one were represented1 and the meeting was much enjoyed by all4 ,the color line was a little indistinct and almost forgotten4 ,the colored brethren were quite in the majority on the platform and on the floor1 and gave good proof of their ability to preside with dignity--,rev4 ,floyd ,snelson was our ,moderator--and to speak fluently and well4 ,in fact1 they showed a real genius for public address1 warranting the statement of a city daily--the ,southern press is growing liberal--that their speeches were 8worthy of the most dignified deliberative body40 ,dr4 ,roy reported the great meeting at ,chicago1 giving1 as he had already done at ,atlanta and ,macon1 rich skimmings from the papers and speeches there presented1 and greatly cheering1 with these proofs of the sympathy of ,northern ,christians1 those who must here learn to do without the sympathy of their near neighbors4 ,his lecture on ,congregationalism also elicited much interest1 and nothing but the lack of money to pay the printer prevented its immediate publication in full1 as a much needed campaign document for the use of the churches4 ,to whatever church a man here belongs1 it becomes him to be able to state and to justify its faith and polity4 ,there is kept up a running fire of small arms between denominations here4 ,it was encouraging to see that the men of this young ,conference desire to be intelligent ,congregationalists1 and able to defend themselves2 but it is hoped that they will not fall into the mistake of making denominational strife the chief end of their existence1 as some of their neighbors seem to do4 ,the reports from the churches do not show any rapid increase4 8,we must expect the churches to be small1 perhaps1 for twenty years yet10 said one who has grown up with this work4 ,there are obstinate prejudices in the way1 and there is a great educational work yet to be done4 ,a lay delegate sagely remarked3 8,when the ground is rough we must go slow1 or there'll be trouble10 adding also his personal testimony that1 in seeking to bring others over to his way of thinking1 he found it 8mighty hard to sense them into anything better than their old ideas1 that a man cannot have religion without making a great big fuss about it1 and cannot pray without hollering as though the ,lord was deaf20 but still he was sure that 8if we kept pulling at the wheel and rolling on the chariot we should gain the field40 ,,two ,,councils4 ,on the done by the school for the church4 ,putting all things together--,conference and ,councils1 and acquaintance with the teachers and their excellent work in ,macon and ,savannah--it was with us all a #bjth1 ,rev4 ,g4,w4 ,moore preached the opening sermon from ,psalm lxxiii4 #bd1 8,thou wilt guide me by thy counsel1 and afterward receive me to glory40 ,the subject was clearly and forcibly presented4 ,on ,friday morning an organization was effected by electing ,rev4 ,j4,e4 ,smith1 of ,chattanooga1 moderator4 ,that morning was spent in hearing the narratives of the churches4 ,the reports generally showed progress4 ,athens alone reported a less membership than last year2 but in this church there has been a growth in grace in many of its members4 ,in the afternoon we discussed the subject of education4 ,the young people were especially urged not to be content with a little schooling1 nor even with a good common school education1 but to press forward with a determination to secure the very highest education that can be secured4 ,the idea that the schools at ,chattanooga1 ,athens1 ,florence and ,memphis ought to be feeders of ,fisk ,university was well brought out4 ,these schools cannot give the high education that can be gained at ,fisk1 and their success should be measured largely by the number of students they send to ,fisk ,university4 ,rev4 ,j4 ,e4 ,smith read an article on the necessity of church discipline4 ,the subject was well presented1 and in the discussion that followed1 as in the paper1 the idea that church discipline ought to have for its main object the reclamation of the offender1 was clearly brought out4 ,dr4 ,roy and others also spoke as to the method of church discipline1 and especially the propriety of getting evidence from any source4 ,it seems that some1 perhaps a majority1 of the churches about here will not receive the evidence of any but their own members4 ,some think that ,congregational churches should be bound hand and foot in the same way1 so that the devil and his followers can manage all in their own way4 ,then any member could be guilty of theft1 adultery1 fornication or anything else2 if he only were not seen by members of this church he could remain in 8good and regular standing40 ,dr4 ,roy said emphatically that evidence was to be sought from any source1 and weighed carefully4 ,others agreed with him4 ,at night ,dr4 ,roy spoke1 using his fine large map1 on the work of the ,association in the ,south4 ,the house was full1 and all were deeply interested4 ,saturday morning we listened to a paper by ,rev4 give in this paper an idea of the interesting meetings we had4 ,each meeting was a feast of fat things4 ,it was a great privilege to meet these brethren from abroad1 to have them sit at our table1 to talk with them about the common cause we all are interested in1 and above all to meet with them around the table of our ,lord4 ,some of us may never meet them again in ,conference1 but the memory of this good meeting will remain through life2 and we trust that this church will receive a blessing in consequence of this meeting4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,georgia4 ,thanksgiving ,services and ,first expressions of gratitude for blessings here received1 and fervent prayers for the continued and increasing success of the cause4 ,one brother thought the ,association the chief agent in the abolition of slavery1 and spoke most feelingly of the inexpressible relief which that abolition had brought to him and to his people4 ,another in his prayer thanked the ,lord for the schools and the church in the city1 expressing the conviction that if the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 had not sent its workers here 8things would be in a considerably worse fix than they are40 ,one woman told her story3 her blind gropings as a slave1 her joy in being sought out and taught by the teachers of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 just when she 8did not know what to do with her freedom10 and made capable of giving her children1 now converted1 a of three hundred ,freedmen4 ,in ,april of our ,centennial year it crumbled in the flames4 ,the school went on in unfavorable quarters until1 in ,may1 #ahgh1 it entered its new and elegant building1 which was designed for two hundred and fifty pupils4 ,last year the yellow fever delayed the opening of school and crippled many of its friends4 ,but adverse influences are now disappearing1 and the ten thousand colored people of the city are looking to it again as the hope of their youth4 ,last year1 two-thirds of our whole number in attendance entered after the ,christmas holidays4 ,this year the second month closes with fifty names more than the highest number of last year4 ,the rooms are furnished with the best of modern desks2 but their present capacity is exceeded by more than forty three hundred4 ,to meet the wants of these1 we should have six teachers besides the superintendent1 including one that should give half an hour each day to instruction in vocal music and some time to instrumental music4 ,we now have one that is competent for this work1 but she has no time for it4 ,our overworked force is to be somewhat relieved by the expected arrival of a fifth teacher this week4 designed4 ,we regret the seeming necessity that is laid upon the colored parents of taking their children from the public schools4 ,we do not advise their action4 ,the feverish desire for education which seized the body of colored people immediately after emancipation has subsided4 ,their best men are now obliged to urge upon them the duty of educating their children4 ,in this they have come down to the level of the whites4 ,an organization has been formed to promote this interest4 ,the largest church has established a school of more than fifty members4 ,the pastor of the most influential church1 in point of intelligence1 has opened one1 with an attendance of more than forty1 and teaches it himself1 in addition to preaching three sermons every ,lord's day and performing the other usual ,church--#ahgf-ahgi4 ,organized with forty-seven members1 it now has sixty-one4 ,it owes its origin and existence to the presence of the ,institute4 ,its members are very poor in this world's goods1 but delightfully rich in grace4 ,it was natural that the spirit of independence which found full scope among the ,freedmen should seek for a church organization and connection with an ecclesiastical body whose history was not tainted with oppression4 ,this disposition1 however1 has sometimes asked for more license for fleshly indulgences than pure ,congregationalism permits4 ,in this city it is impossible for your ,superintendent to find a provision store having any considerable variety of goods that does not include among its principal commodities wines and liquors4 ,members and officers of churches are engaged in the trade1 and scruple not to advertise conspicuously that branch of their business1 which we regard as exceedingly immoral4 ,yet there are some churches1 both white and ,among the adverse circumstances against which our church has had to struggle may be mentioned a frequent change of pastors4 ,in its three and one-half years it has suffered the perturbations incident to two summer supplies1 and now the fourth pastor4 ,these changes have tended to prevent some from making their church home with us4 ,more permanence is a necessity4 ,we have no such opportunity for reaching those under our educational care as is offered by a boarding-school4 ,the parents of most of our pupils are connected with some church1 and the children themselves with ,sunday-schools4 ,the kind of instruction they receive is one of the necessities of our continuance4 ,the growing intelligence of the colored preachers1 and the attractiveness of the large congregations which gather about them1 make our beginning less attractive to the young1 who otherwise might prefer our place of worship4 ,your missionary has preached to the largest colored church in a revival meeting1 and exchanged pulpits with the other leading pastor2 but we cannot expect any special help from other churches in building up a new denomination in the midst of them4 ,j4 ,h4 ,roberts1 now in the ,senior 8,the bearer of this1 ,richard ,j4 ,holloway1 is a young man who was born in my family4 ,i have known him from his birth to the present time4 ,he early exhibited a desire for knowledge1 which he has pursued under great difficulties4 ,notwithstanding he has made considerable advance1 his laudable desire seems to be unsatisfied1 and he leaves this section of the country to avail himself of advantages offered elsewhere4 ,so far as ,i know1 his moral character is good4 ,he is commended to the favorable regard of all to whom this may come40 ,the first year after the war1 being a lad of nine years1 ,richard had the opportunity of attending a school in ,abbeville for five or six months4 ,after this he was under the necessity of working with his parents1 but contrived to study by himself so that he made considerable progress4 ,during the fall of #ahge he happened to see1 upon the table of his minister1 a circular which had been sent out from the school established by the ,am4 ,miss4 ,assoc4 at ,greenwood1 ,s4 ,c41 which was then1 and is still1 taught by that most faithful and zealous missionary laborer1 ,mr4 ,backenstose1 of ,geneva1 ,n4 ,y4 ,noticing that the tuition was only fifty cents a month1 there dawned upon him the possibility of realizing his long-cherished desire of securing a good education4 ,inspired by this thought he left home and hired out on a plantation to earn some money with which to go to ,greenwood4 ,by working three months he earned money enough1 so that by buying his food and doing his own cooking he was able to attend school about the same length of time4 ,he then went to one of the upper counties of ,south ,carolina and taught a private school for two months1 after which he worked for two months in a cotton-gin near by1 while remaining to collect the money for his teaching4 ,being compelled to use considerable of the money he had earned to help his parents1 he again secured a public school for two months1 at fifteen dollars a month1 and boarded himself4 ,he then went over into ,georgia and taught a public school1 for which he was fortunate enough to receive twenty-five dollars a month4 ,he was then able to return to ,greenwood1 where he was again under the instruction of ,mr4 ,backenstose for nearly three months4 ,under the advice of his teacher1 he determined to get to ,fisk ,university if possible and take a succeeded1 however1 in getting a three months' school in ,georgia1 for which he has only received payment in part4 ,as soon as his school closed he started for ,nashville and reached here on the #gth of ,october1 just as the answer came from our friend in ,illinois which told us what to do4 ,mr4 ,holloway is a member of the ,african ,methodist church1 and his desire evidently is to secure an rapidly1 until before the end of ,november the daily receipts became the largest ever known at this point1 placing ,memphis as a primary cotton market scarcely second to ,new ,orleans4 ,with this revival of activity the empty talk of a hundred or so self-constituted newspaper correspondents and pretended scientists ceased to be heard on the corners and to be seen in the papers4 ,the city authorities and a committee of citizens began a careful and thorough canvass of the city to ascertain its condition and needs4 ,under the advice of a committee of experts from the meeting of the ,american ,sanitary ,association held at ,nashville1 a system of sewerage and general sanitary reform was promptly adopted1 and it is now expected that the ,governor will convene the legislature to empower the city to make the needed changes4 ,there is little doubt but that the hard and painful lessons of the past two seasons have finally been learned1 and that at least another epidemic will not receiving new students every day1 of these ten are in the senior or graduating class4 ,we note with interest a revival of the early desire for education and the culture which it brings2 not just the ,moreover1 the heathen small boy lives in a country where tigers and other delightful wild beasts abound1 and where the exciting spectacle of a widow burning to death in company with her husband's in that way1 and he never drops a copper in the collector's box without feeling that he is the victim of moral blackmailing4 ,now and then there arises a small-boy with a gigantic intellect1 and a ,that these enterprises do not meet with success is due to forces beyond his control1 but they display the greatness of his intellect and the boldness of his character4 ,of this type of small-boy is ,master ,jaggars1 of ,north ,meriden1 ,conn41 who lately devised an ingenious and entirely novel scheme for arresting the flow of ,american copper coins toward the heathen pockets of juvenile ,india4 ,some two months since1 ,master ,jaggars1 who had painfully accumulated the sum of twenty-five cents1 with a view to an expected circus1 was compelled to consecrate fifteen cents to the hated small-boys of ,india4 ,it was this last of a long series of pecuniary outrages that determined him to take a bold stand against missionary assessments1 and he1 therefore1 summoned a mass-meeting of small-boys on ,saturday afternoon at ,deacon ,pratt's barn1 ostensibly with a view to rats1 but really in order to propose a plan of defense against heathen encroachments4 ,master ,jaggars made a unanimously supported4 ,a slight temporary opposition was manifested by ,master ,sabin1 who maintained that in order to become heathen they must first have their eyes put out--a theory which was based upon a misinterpretation of the hymn which speaks of 8the heathen in his blindness40 ,the objector1 however1 was soon convinced of his error1 and expressed thereupon a hearty desire to become a heathen4 ,the details of the scheme were all arranged by ,master ,jaggars4 ,a plaster bust of ,mr4 ,s4 ,j4 ,tilden was decided to be ugly enough to serve as an idol1 and the amateur heathen placed it on an empty barrel in the barn1 and bowed down to it with much gravity4 ,they discarded all their clothing except a towel twisted around the waist1 and blackened their entire bodies with burnt cork4 ,there could be no doubt that they were very successful heathen in appearance1 and1 as it was late in the afternoon1 they resolved to spend the night in the barn2 to breakfast on the spoils of ,deacon ,pratt's orchard1 and to attend ,sunday-school in a body1 in order to collect tribute from the ,christian boys4 ,the ,sunday-school opened as usual the next morning1 although the absence of eleven boys created a good deal of remark4 ,soon after the exercises had begun1 the teachers were astounded at the entrance of ,master ,jaggars and his ten associate heathen4 ,it is only fair to say that the heathen behaved themselves with as much propriety as their professional duties would permit4 ,master ,jaggars advanced to the ,superintendent and remarked1 8,if you please1 ,sir1 we've all turned heathen4 ,there ain't no foolin' about it4 ,we've got a first-class old idol1 and we don't believe in nothing no more4 ,so1 if you please1 ,sir1 will you please tell them ,christian boys to fork over half of all the money they're got1 and to remember how blessed it is to consecrate it to real genuine heathen40 ,there is no instance on record in which a heathen has been converted as quickly as was ,master ,jaggars4 ,the ,superintendent held him by one ear1 and at the tenth stroke of the cane ,mister ,jaggars renounced his heathenism and promised to smash his idol and return to the ,christian faith without a moment's delay4 ,the other heathen1 alarmed by the fate of their leader1 fled to the barn1 washed themselves1 resumed their clothing1 and went homeward with sober countenances1 singing missionary hymns4 ,the ,north ,meriden revival of heathenism was a disastrous failure1 but nevertheless the boldness and originality of the scheme devised by ,master ,jaggars must command our wonder and admiration4 ,,receipts ,,for ,,november1 #ahgi4 ,,maine1 #agc4cc4 ,bath4 ,ladies1 for a ,teacher #h4ej ,biddeford4 ,second ,cong4 ,soc4 #bg4ea ,cumberland ,centre4 ,cong4 ,ch4 and ,soc4 to const4
