cover4 99 99 99 99 99 ,in addition to the speakers from the ,north announced above1 much interest will be added to our ,annual ,meeting by addresses from some of the prominent workers in the ,southern field4 99 99 99 99 99 ,during the vacation of our schools and workers1 there is a dearth of intelligence from 8the field10 which must be the ,,missionary',s apology for its leanness4 ,the next number will be made fat with the good things prepared for us at ,norwich1 and may be delayed on that account1 after which there will doubtless be abundance from our teachers and pastors1 who will by that time have their work well in hand once more for another year's labor4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,st4 ,louis ,school ,board has added oral lessons in etiquette to its course of studies4 ,a few scholars read in turn five pages from a manual of etiquette1 and then a conversation is held on the topic by teacher and pupils4 ,we do not see why good manners are not as essential as good grammar4 ,so says the ,congregationalist1 and so says the ,,american ,,missionary4 ,in several of our ,institutions at the ,south1 a small text-book on good manners is used with accompanying oral lessons4 ,colored pupils take well to such instruction4 99 99 99 99 99 ,chicago is the freest city in this country4 ,there is no discrimination except in brains and money4 ,every place is open to the colored man4 ,the schools of the city have white and colored children on the same seats and in the same classes1 and no 8kicking0 is heard4 ,but what is the strangest of all1 there are two colored ladies who teach schools composed of white as well as colored4--,ex4 99 99 99 99 99 ,it is possible we may yet go to the negro to learn many things1 especially the virtues allied to1 and growing out of1 patience under provocations1 of which certainly he has been a wonderful example4 ,the editorial fraternity of the country would do well to imitate the example of the colored brethren1 who at the meeting of the ,colored ,national ,press ,association1 recently held in ,louisville1 disposed cheaply of what has hitherto been regarded as the editors' inestimable and inalienable right by resolving1 8,that when differences arise among us1 we will eschew vituperation and personal abuse1 and that the columns of our papers shall be kept free from everything calculated to detract from the tone and character of journalism40 99 99 99 99 99 ,the defense ,roman ,catholicism makes against ,protestant ruffianism varies according to environments2 in ,uganda it takes one form1 in the ,united ,states another2 but it is good to see the necessity of some form of it1 as stated in one of the ,roman ,catholic journals in ,mexico as follows3 8,it is necessary that the ,catholics rise resolutely and make a rapid and voluntary movement in defense of their belief4 ,to-day1 unfortunately1 the ,protestants come with a subvention1 and their teachings are extending throughout the whole country4 ,they circulate their writings at the lowest prices1 even give them away1 sometimes in tracts1 sometimes in papers1 which is the favorite method of sowing the bad seed2 and1 sad to say1 in exchange1 the ,catholic weeklies are dying off for lack of subscribers to sustain them4 ,protestantism is becoming truly alarming among us40 99 99 99 99 99 ,the colored ,baptist churches of ,virginia and ,south ,carolina1 believing the time has come when they should go forth to the millions of their fatherland with the ,gospel1 have sent out two missionaries2 and now the churches of ,virginia unite in calling a convention to meet at ,montgomery1 ,ala41 on the #bdth of ,november4 ,this call is as broad as all the colored ,baptist churches and other religious bodies of the colored ,baptists of the ,united ,states1 and is 8for the purpose of eliciting1 combining and directing the energies of all the colored ,baptists in one sacred effort for the propagation of the ,gospel in ,africa40 ,this may seem to some a somewhat narrow call1 but it is for a broad work--a work that shall yet elicit the energies of all our ,father's children of whatever color and denomination1 until the dark continent shall be made glorious by the ,sun of ,righteousness4 99 99 99 99 99 ,mohammedanism1 whatever its affinity for ,africa as it has been1 and its baleful power because of this1 has no outlook for the future of that sad1 but soon to be made glad1 continent4 ,the ,foreign ,missionary well says3 8,if we consider only the physical condition of success1 it must be allowed that ,islam has an immense advantage in its central position and its vicinage to the field to be won4 ,there is much also in the greater similarity of character between the ,moslem and the heathen tribes as compared with ,europeans1 whose habits are so utterly different from those of all ,african tribes4 ,but on the other hand1 the forces of ,christianity have now well nigh surrounded ,africa1 and are pushing through a hundred avenues into the interior4 ,discovery1 time1 commerce and civilization1 are handmaids of the ,gospel as they are not of ,islam4 ,that can only endure the dim light which survives from a past age4 ,it belongs to an age which has passed away1 and to a type of civilization which is everywhere sinking into decay40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,jubilee ,,singers4 ,these singers of world-wide fame will once more enter the 8service of song0 for ,fisk ,university4 ,they have devoted their wonderful voices to its benefit for six years1 during which they left their marvelous impress on vast and select audiences in ,america1 ,great ,britain1 and the ,continent1 including the highest and humblest in rank1 and have reared as their monument the substantial and beautiful ,jubilee ,hall1 at ,fisk ,university4 ,the past two years they have taken for needed rest1 and in giving concerts for their own benefit2 and in dedicating themselves to the up-building of the ,university1 it is now for endowment1 as it was then for building4 ,during all these years1 their voices have been more and more highly cultivated1 without losing their freshness and originality1 or their power to move most deeply the hearts of vast audiences1 as was so signally manifested in the enthusiastic gatherings they met recently at ,chautauqua4 ,the name and fame of these ,singers have been repeatedly appropriated by unworthy imitators4 ,this true ,jubilee ,troupe1 when again heard1 will need no credentials except their own voices to certify to the public that they are the original ,jubilee ,singers4 99 99 99 99 99 ,gen4 ,garfield heard the ,jubilee ,singers when he was at ,chautauqua1 and closed his eloquent speech with this beautiful tribute3 8,i heard yesterday and last night the songs of those who were lately redeemed from slavery1 and ,i felt that there1 too1 was one of the great triumphs of the republic4 ,i believe in the efficiency of forces that come down from the ages behind us2 and ,i wondered if the tropical sun had not distilled its sweetness1 and if the sorrows of centuries of slavery had not distilled its sadness1 into voices which were touchingly sweet--voices to sing the songs of liberty as they sing them wherever they go40 ,in his speech responding to a serenade by the 8,boys in ,blue0 in this city1 he expressed this noble sentiment in reference to our colored fellow-citizens--a sentiment which must become a fact established beyond the possibility of successful assault before there can be either peace or safety for the nation3 8,we will stand by them until the sun of liberty1 fixed in the firmament of our ,constitution1 shall shine with equal ray upon every man1 black or white1 throughout the ,union4 ,fellow-citizens1 fellow-soldiers1 in this there is all the beneficence of eternal justice1 and by this we will stand forever40 99 99 99 99 99 ,atlanta's ,colored ,people4--,atlanta1 and the world outside that ,chicago of the ,south1 will doubtless be surprised to learn that her colored people give in #bej1jjj of taxable property4 ,there are over six hundred who pay tax on values ranging between #ajj and #a1jjj2 some forty ranging from #a1jjj to #f1jjj and over4 ,in business pursuits1 there are #dj boot and shoe makers1 #dj retail grocers1 #ge draymen1 #be hackmen1 #bj blacksmiths1 #ab barbers1 #b tailors1 several boarding-house keepers1 #b caterers1 #e confectioners1 #c dealers in fruits1 #a dentist1 #a undertaker1 #a veterinary surgeon1 #a mattrass maker1 and #a billiard-table keeper4 ,of bootblacks1 newspaper venders1 porters1 peddlers1 drummers1 messengers1 hostlers1 waiters1 and those engaged in mechanical pursuits1 we have no special data1 for they are numerous4 ,there are eighteen churches in the city1 with an average membership of #cej1 the three largest having each over #a1ejj4 ,over #e1jjj children and adults are in the ,sabbath schools1 and #a1bgh children1 about one-half in the public schools of the city4 ,there are three lodges of ,good ,templars among them1 having a total membership of about #bjj4 ,two lodges of ,good ,samaritans and ,daughters of ,samaria have a membership of some #ejj4 ,the ,brothers ,aid ,society number some #bej1 and the ,brothers of ,love and ,charity #ge4 ,the ,gospel ,aid ,society1 ,daughters of ,bethel1 and ,daughters of ,jerusalem--benevolent institutions--number a total of about #fjj4 ,the ,masonic lodge has some #ej members4 ,there are lodges of ,odd ,fellows whose combined membership exceeds #fjj4 ,these institutions have encouraged them to form habits of sobriety and economy1 and imbued them with feelings of charity and benevolence4 ,there are five military companies1 and they show great proficiency in the manual of arms4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,common ,,sense ,,for ,,colored ,,men4 ,the following letter with the above caption is from the ,new ,york ,evangelist1 and was written by the ,rev4 ,moses ,a4 ,hopkins1 a colored preacher of ,franklinton1 ,n4,c4 ,it contains so much truth1 and good1 hard1 common sense1 that the ,,missionary is constrained to send it along4 ,this is done with a slight but emphatic caveat in regard to one paragraph1 to which exception is taken as misleading4 ,to say 8the pinching poverty which drove a few idle and ignorant ,freedmen to ,indiana1 ,kansas1 and ,africa0 does not come up to the proportions1 as the writer would imply that it does1 of a satisfactory explanation of this great movement which has taken more than #dj1jjj colored people from their old to new homes1 at great expense1 both of suffering and money4 ,from ,florence1 ,ala41 many of the most intelligent and well-to-do of these people exodized4 ,among those who went to ,africa were many intelligent and thrifty men1 sufficiently so to send out an agent and arrange for the movement1 with means to place themselves in their new home1 and they were unanimous in assigning reasons which justified them in the experiment4--,,ed4 ,,miss4 ,many designing men1 8filled to the brim0 with sledge-hammer rhetoric and campaign eloquence1 for more than a decade have 8used sorcery and bewitched the colored people0 with their 8cunning craftiness1 whereby they lie in wait to deceive10 till many of the ,freedmen thought that the time had fully come when the last should be first and the first last1 and were waiting and watching for their turn in the ,white ,house and ,congress4 ,but having hoped against hope1 till hope deferred and poverty had saddened their hearts1 most of them have turned their minds to the soil1 which now promises 8seed to the sower and bread to the eater40 ,on every hand 8the valleys are covered over with corn10 and ,god1 the poor man's ,friend1 has just granted the tillers of the ground 8a plentiful rain10 which causes 8the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice40 ,the present prospect of a bountiful harvest has greatly inspired our people to labor and to appreciate honest toil1 and to remember that the great mass of the ,freedmen will make better plowmen than ,presidents1 and better sowers than ,senators4 ,the pinching poverty which drove a few idle and ignorant ,freedmen to ,indiana1 ,kansas and ,africa1 has taught those who had the good sense to stay at home1 that ,god will not bless idleness and ignorance among any people4 ,most of the ,freedmen have decided to buy land and labor on it2 to build houses and dwell in them1 8and to plant gardens and eat the fruit of them02 to seek the peace of the country and the cities where ,god has caused them to be carried away captives2 and to remember that in the peace and prosperity of this country shall they have peace4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,schools ,,and ,,the ,,common ,,school ,,system4 ,the settlers of ,new ,england showed their uncommon common sense by the early establishment of ,harvard and ,yale--the nursing mothers of the common school system which has made these ,states what they are4 ,these colleges are not the ripened fruit of the common schools1 but the creators of them4 ,for these colleges1 we are indebted to a class of men among the ,pilgrim ,fathers1 educated in the universities of the old world1 a class not to be found among the colored people of the ,south1 and because of which alone1 if for no other reason1 their condition differs immensely from that of the ,freedmen1 who have no ability to create the instruments by which they can be lifted up from the degraded condition in which slavery left them4 ,the deep-seated prejudice of the ,southern white against the fact of negro education1 his bitter unwillingness to see the experiment tried1 coupled with his scornful incredulity that anything worth the effort could be accomplished1 made it certain that those most deeply concerned1 because of the new relation these people sustained to them1 in the elevation1 through schools1 of the negro1 would originate no efforts to this end4 ,this gospel1 like every other1 must be sent to those who are to be specially benefited by it1 and must be sustained1 like all missionary enterprises1 by those who know its value1 until it can vindicate itself to those to whom it is sent4 ,it is not rash to say that1 but for outside pressure1 few1 if any1 of the ,southern ,states would now have a system of common schools1 provided for by ,state legislation1 even for the whites2 even less bold is the assertion that1 but for the proved results of missionary schools for the education of the colored people1 the ,south1 and a large proportion of those in the ,north1 would be utterly incredulous as to the possibility of making scholars of the negroes2 and that the common schools forced upon the unwilling ,south by the constitutions formed by conventions in which the ,southern sentiment found no expression1 would never have gained favor as they have with the people1 but for the trained teachers which our schools and the schools of other societies have furnished4 ,as in ,new ,england1 so in the ,south1 the trained teacher makes the schools1 which are thus the children of the colleges and normal schools4 ,wherever we have been able to send competent colored teachers1 the whites are in favor of sustaining the common school system2 and it may with modesty be said1 that the ,a4,m4,a41 perhaps more than any other agency1 has won for it a place in the future of these ,states1 ten of which1 according to the latest reports1 appropriate #di1hbi for normal instruction in colored schools1 a large share of which goes to institutions established by ,northern charity1 to carry on a work the value of which had been fully proven by these schools before these ,states contributed a dollar for such a purpose4 ,in #ahgh1 out of a total school population in the recent slave ,states1 including the ,district of ,columbia1 of #e1ahg1ehd1 #b1gaa1jif were enrolled1 being nearly #fb per cent4 of the whites1 and something more than #dg per cent4 of the blacks4 ,nearly twelve millions of dollars was expended upon the schools for that year1 and for the most part it has been very equitably divided between the races1 except in ,kentucky and ,delaware1 in which ,states the school tax collected from the colored people alone is appropriated to colored schools4 ,thus the teachers of negro schools have fought a great fight1 and have won substantial victories1 for a system of education which is to regenerate the ,south1 and1 more than any other and all other agencies1 is to convert elements of danger1 which1 neglected1 would soon have proved the ruin of our republic1 into elements of strength and greatness4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,new ,,south1 ,,not ,a ,,new ,,england ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,there is a general feeling outside of1 and it is encouraging to believe even in1 the ,south1 that a new state of things is desirable for that section of the country4 ,no one who has seen its homes1 schools1 churches1 industries 7or want of them71 its literature--in short1 whatever at once marks and constitutes its civilization1 and knows how meager and unworthy it is1 but assents to the proposition that the ,south needs to be regenerated1 and heartily wishes that 8old things might pass away and all become new40 ,in one way or another1 ,new ,england has supplemented her earnest wish for it with most earnest efforts to accomplish this regeneration4 ,to say nothing of legislative attempts by the ,government1 thousands of missionaries1 at an expense of millions of dollars1 during the past fifteen years1 have1 with great self-denial and laborious effort1 attempted the task1 and the reports are abundant and uniform that these efforts are beginning to have their effect4 ,old prejudices are yielding2 new industries and new institutions1 the outcome of new ideas1 are springing up2 society is changing1 and the country is beginning to put on a new aspect4 ,never before have the societies and laborers engaged in this work been so cheered and encouraged by the outlook4 ,it may be well at this point to ask1 toward what ideal we are working1 and fairly to consider the forces that are co-operating with1 or working against1 us in this effort4 ,the most potent factor in the creation of a new ,south must be1 of course1 the ,south itself1 as of necessity she will be chiefly the architect of her own fortunes1 good or bad4 ,it would be unwise1 and the effort would prove futile1 to attempt its reconstruction by outside influences and agencies1 in utter disregard of the fact that to her belongs the right1 and upon her devolves the duty1 as she alone possesses the power1 of shaping her own destiny4 ,this being the case1 it becomes evident that the new ,south is not to be a ,new ,england in the ,south1 and our ,yankee egotism should not measure the progress made in that section simply by its observable approximation to ,northern ideals4 ,new ,england1 as it is1 could not have been built except upon ,new ,england's hills1 and we shall never see it in the cotton fields1 rice swamps and everglades of the sunny ,south4 ,other influences than those that are merely ethnic and moral help to mold the character of a people1 and to develop the industries by which it shapes its civilization4 ,we dare not think what the result to our ,republic would have been had the ,mayflower found the mouth of the ,mississippi ,river instead of ,plymouth harbor1 and had the ,pilgrim ,fathers settled on the savannahs of ,louisiana instead of the bleak hills of ,new ,england4 ,the intelligent and thrifty ,new ,england farmer1 transplanted to ,florida1 may not1 indeed1 degenerate into an everglade 8cracker10 whose 8strength is to sit still0 and chew tobacco2 but he cannot be a ,new ,england farmer in ,florida1 for the reason that he has neither the climate1 soil nor products of his old farm1 and none of the conditions which partly prompted1 and partly compelled1 the thrift which has characterized the farmers of ,new ,england4 ,new ,england has emptied itself1 probably more than once1 into the ,west2 she has sent her sons and daughters out into the great prairies with the school-house and the church1 and they have built them homes hallowed and made beautiful by these influences1 but they have not reproduced ,yankee ,new ,england1 and they never can4 ,in the new ,south1 the ugly mud-daubed log huts will give place to neat cottages2 the school-houses will be multiplied until all her children shall possess facilities for acquiring education2 churches1 supplied with an educated ministry1 will be accessible to all inhabitants2 roads will be built1 over which it will be possible to travel with comfort2 the immense tracts of land now impoverished and running to waste will be brought under cultivation2 a ,christian conscience will displace a false code of honor among the people as a rule of conduct1 and methods more civilized than the pistol and bowie-knife will be resorted to in adjusting misunderstandings among neighbors4 ,all this will be1 and of this there are evident tokens that it is now coming in4 ,but the wide diversity of soil and climate and other conditions of life1 the antipodal ideas which have shaped the character of the people1 the heterogeneous elements which more and more are entering into the make-up of the population of the different sections--in short1 the necessities of the case1 make it absolutely certain that ,new ,england is to be confined to ,new ,england1 and greatly modified even there1 and that the civilizations of the ,south and the ,west are to be in many respects widely different1 possessing characteristics as marked1 and doubtless as valuable1 as those which have made the influence of ,new ,england so beneficent upon the country at large4 ,it is wise1 as it is also incumbent upon us1 to supply the educational influences which shall change the whole aspect of ,southern society1 but foolish to undertake to cast it in the exact form of that which we are proud to call ,new ,england4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,mtesa ,,and ,,the three days after the publication of his letter1 the ,church ,missionary ,society received1 from an unknown giver1 #be1jjj1 which was soon increased by the same person to #ej1jjj1 for opening a mission among the ,waganda4 ,the reception of the mission1 which was soon sent out1 was most encouraging4 ,the opposition of the ,mohammedan ,arabs1 bitter as it was1 did not materially interfere with its prospects4 ,the king seemed intelligently alive to the fact that there was something1 at least1 in a ,christian civilization infinitely superior to what was offered in ,mohammedanism or heathenism4 ,for a time1 everything progressed most encouragingly2 the king and all his people gave themselves assiduously to the new doctrines1 and the work of the mission was interrupted only temporarily by a suspicion on the part of the king that the missionaries were emissaries of the ,khedive of ,egypt1 and were intriguing in his interest4 ,this jealousy was soon allayed1 friendly relations were restored1 and the work was fully resumed1 when there appeared upon the scene ten ,jesuit missionaries1 sent out by the ,archbishop of ,algiers1 with instructions to occupy every station of the ,protestant missionary societies in the region of ,victoria ,nyanza and ,tanganika1 with the intention of carrying the ,french language and influence into the depths of ,central ,africa4 ,their coming endangered for a time the life of the mission1 and their settlement near the palace by the king proved to be a serious obstacle to the prosecution of its work4 ,they gladly bribed the king with gifts of arms and ammunition1 articles eagerly sought by him1 but refused by the ,protestant missionaries4 ,they immediately assumed a most hostile attitude toward the mission2 denounced the missionaries as liars1 and threw the king and court into the greatest perplexity4 8,what am ,i to believe80 cried the king4 8,who is right8 ,first1 ,i was a heathen1 then a ,mohammedan1 then a ,christian2 now some more white men come and tell me these ,english are liars4 ,perhaps if ,i follow them1 other white men will come and tell me these are liars also40 ,after a time1 matters had settled down to comparative quiet4 ,the missionaries appealed to the word1 which they were rapidly teaching the people to read4 ,king and people were learning with an eagerness like that manifested by the ,freedmen of the ,south after the surrender4 ,the king had the prayers written out in ,arabic characters1 and ordered many copies1 so that all might join in the ,sunday services2 and such was the evident interest of all1 that neither the efforts of the ,moslems1 made after the fast of ,ramadhan last autumn1 to have their creed introduced1 nor the opposition of the ,jesuits1 availed to hinder the work4 ,but there was a danger greater than the joint opposition of ,arab and ,frenchman1 of ,islam and ,loyola1 with their confederates of the slave trade--an adversary more to be dreaded1 because indigenous to the country1 not foreign1 and entrenched more deeply and strongly in the ,african nature than any possible influence by which he could be swayed4 ,messrs4 ,mackay and ,litchfield were in ,november last anxiously awaiting the return of ,mr4 ,felkin from ,england1 whither he had gone with the ,uganda chiefs1 being in sore need of more paper to meet the demand made for printed cards and pages of the ,scriptures4 ,mr4 ,pearson was at ,kagei1 where he had gone to bring some machinery from that point to ,rubaga4 ,this he was not able to do and was compelled to return without it4 ,on arriving at ,buganga his request to be allowed to go on was refused1 because ,mokassa1 one of the ,lubari of the ,nyanza1 had possession of a part of the lake1 and no one could pass over it4 ,at the same time a number of half-caste traders were kept waiting at ,rubaga1 not allowed to proceed to ,unyanyembe until this ,neptune1 god or devil of the lake should return home4 ,messrs4 ,mackay and ,litchfield heard from time to time that the ,lubare was expected at court to cure the king of his sickness4 ,one day they ventured to introduce the subject of his or her 7for in this case the ,lubare is an old woman who personifies the spirit or devil of the lake71 coming4 ,the king entered heartily into the subject and translated to his chiefs all that was said by the missionaries4 ,they said to him1 if ,lubare is a god1 then there are two gods in ,uganda--,jehovah and ,mokassa4 ,if he is a man1 then there are two kings in ,uganda--,mtesa1 who has given permission for these traders to depart1 and ,mokassa1 who has forbidden it4 ,the next day1 an order was sent for the traders to depart1 and the king proposed to his court that some cattle should be given to the ,lubare and she should be ordered to go back the way she came4 ,weeks passed1 and it seemed doubtful whether the king would triumph or the old chiefs and the king's mother1 who insisted that the ,lubare should have houses erected for her in the king's inner court4 ,mtesa himself said to ,mr4 ,mackay1 8,i believe what you say is true1 and that every ,lubare is a liar1 and deceives the people only to get food40 ,there was a gathering of the old chiefs1 and the king was advised by them that the missionaries had come to take possession of the country1 and were laboring to change its customs as a preliminary step to conquering them altogether4 ,evidently the king was afraid of the chiefs4 ,the missionaries were at length summoned to court1 where were gathered the chiefs and a vast concourse of people4 ,at length the king announced the result of the council3 8,we shall now have nothing more to do with either the ,arabs' or the white men's religion2 but we shall return to the religion of our fathers40 ,every one assented with a simultaneous motion of hands4 ,the next day1 the beating of drums announced the great procession which accompanied the ,mokassa to the palace4 ,the pupils have all ceased to come to the mission2 a time of persecution is anticipated by those who have inclined to ,christianity2 and everything looks dark for the mission1 which had been planted at great expense1 with so much hope4 ,it is emphatically ,satan's hour of triumph2 but we feel assured that the hour of the ,son of ,man also draweth near1 and this darkest is the hour before the dawning of the day4 99 99 99 99 99 ,enough furniture was sent from an abandoned school in ,augusta to make the teachers' rooms comfortable4 ,in the students' rooms1 a barrel with a board on it did the double duty of washstand and table4 ,in the summer of #ahgj1 a new building for young men was well on its way4 ,it was our first summer in ,atlanta4 ,some one suggested that it would be pleasant to have individual friends1 ,sunday-schools and churches furnish the dormitories1 and keep with us a memento of their generosity by placing the donor's name over each door4 ,how well ,i remember with what enthusiasm ,i sat down1 ten years ago1 to write my first begging letter4 ,i gazed then upon this same charming view that ,i am feasting my eyes upon at this moment1 and drank in hope and courage from this wide north view1 with the strong old ,kenesaw towering in the distance4 ,soon responses came4 ,you little realize how much joy has been brought to weary teachers on opening letters with a twenty-five-dollar check for a room4 ,one such occasional letter compensated for many chilling ones1 and lightened the weary hours spent in timidly addressing this friend and that4 ,nearly all of us turned beggars1 and soon had the name of our home church or ,sunday-school1 our native town or some dear friend1 beaming down upon us as we walked through the buildings4 ,at length1 every student's room became sacred to the memory of some faithful friend of the ,freedmen4 ,some donations came as thank-offerings for dear ones restored to health4 ,at the end of one corridor is a group of four rooms where three are named for three sisters whose husbands have all been engaged in ,southern work1 and the fourth bears the name of their sainted grandfather1 whose prayers and tears1 mingling with multitudes all over our this faith done8 ,by faith ,moses refused to be called the son of ,pharaoh's daughter4 ,in a worldly sense1 one may say he was the most foolish man in the world2 for if he had remained and accepted the offer he would have been ,king of ,egypt1 as ,pharaoh had no son4 ,he would have had great power2 he would have lived in the finest palace of ,egypt2 he would have had all the riches1 comfort1 pleasure1 honor and glory he chose to have2 but by faith he saw and knew all these were things which would vanish away like vapor4 ,besides these1 ,i venture to say that ,moses must have been utterly disgusted with the idolatry of that people4 ,he knew in his own conscience that it was wrong and against ,god to worship any idol1 bull1 cow1 or cat1 all of which were gods in ,egypt4 ,on the other hand he knew that the ,lord was his ,god1 and that he has millions of times more riches and honor than ,pharaoh had4 ,so he regarded not the low station of being a ,hebrew2 neither cared he for being poor1 despised1 oppressed and persecuted1 for he counted all these trials as nothing compared with the blessings of ,god which were to come4 ,at any rate1 he preferred and did choose to be on the side of ,god1 rather than on the side of the ,egyptians4 ,by faith he wrought many wonders in ,egypt2 by faith he led his people across the ,red ,sea2 by faith the many battles were fought and won on the way to ,canaan4 ,by faith ,daniel prayed continually three times a day when he knew that there had been a decree against him2 yet he cared not for the consequence of violating that law4 ,he knew that it was far better and more important to obey the commands of his ,god than the corrupt decree of the ,king1 even if he should be cast into the den and torn to pieces by the terrible beasts4 ,and now let us come down to a later period1 and see how by faith the disciples of ,christ worked many miracles4 ,still later we find that ,luther by faith broke away from the monastery and preached ,christ as he then thought ,he ought to be preached1 not fearing any dangers that were to come4 ,when he was summoned by the ,council at ,worms to answer its charges1 he said to his friends1 8,i will go to according to the proper custom1 and was very much blamed by the ,chinese for having delayed4 ,he told me the secret of the business1 however4 ,he did not believe in the thing1 as he said1 but his the meantime1 the body of his wife was still in the house in the coffin4 ,a ,chinese coffin is thick and air-tight--at least1 no smell escapes from the decaying body1 which sometimes is kept for years in the house or in a temple4 ,this man was not a rich man1 but was in good circumstances4 ,he prepared a house about twelve feet square1 built of bamboo and paper1 most beautifully and carefully finished1 the painting on it representing brick1 stone1 marble1 and woods of different kinds4 ,silver and gold leaf were used profusely2 fruits and trees in relief1 and figures of all shapes4 ,inside inches high1 some engaged in one work1 some in another4 ,some were preparing rice1 some baking1 some washing clothes1 some cleaning rice with a fanning mill4 ,all was most tastefully and elegantly retainers--some as soldiers1 runners1 tradesmen1 c4 ,and why all these things8 ,for the comfort and use of the spirit in hell1 to mitigate her torments by providing her with comforts4 ,all these things cost about #dj or #ej4 ,in another room1 the ceremonies in connection with this were performed4 ,here was a table covered with priestly symbols1 food1 liquor1 candles1 and peculiar priestly appliances4 ,about the table stood three ,buddhist priests1 and sitting on benches were four men with drum1 cymbals and horns4 ,for two days nearly they kept up incessantly the most fearful din1 reading and howling at the top of the voice4 ,every now and then1 the priests would perform a sort of dance4 ,on the walls were hung large pictures of the torments practised in hell--most hideous pictures of pulling out men's tongues and eyes1 and tortures you would hardly think men capable of imagining4 ,the little children of the dead woman were there1 clothed in coarse sack-cloth1 and kept busy taking part in the ceremonies1 directed by the priests4 ,in the place where the house was they would come in and bow down to the ground several times to their mother4 ,the father stood by1 looking on like one troubled and ashamed of the horrid nuisance1 as he evidently thought it to be4 ,in the morning1 the whole thing was taken out and set on fire1 and thus spirited away to the spiritual regions for the use of the poor woman4--,from ,presbyterian ,record1 ,canada4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts ,,for ,,august1 #ahhj4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,maine1 #cea4gj4 ,andover4 ,cong4 ,ch4 and
