,american ,missionary ,association4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the publications provided for a household do much to mould the character of its inmates4 ,if a right proportion of these are religious and missionary1 good results are sure to follow4 ,as at this season many determine what periodicals they will take for the coming year1 we beg leave to suggest the wisdom of families subscribing for and perusing the ,,american ,,missionary4 ,by this means foundations for right thinking and right doing will be laid1 and the way prepared for the exercise of ,christian patriotism and philanthropy1 so needful in the present condition of our country4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we have word from ,hampton that the tide of negro students never set in so promptly and strongly as since ,october #ast of this year4 ,for the second time in the history of the school1 tents have been erected on the campus and occupied by the colored boys4 99 99 99 99 99 ,dr4 ,alexander1 ,president of ,straight ,university1 is much encouraged by the fact that white students are ready to avail themselves of the advantages of the ,law ,department of the ,university4 ,this department is entirely self-sustaining1 and conducted with rare ability1 one of the professors having served on the ,supreme ,bench of the ,state4 ,of twenty-three students1 nineteen are white4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the number of students in attendance at ,fisk ,university for the first two months of this year is much greater than that of any previous year since ,jubilee ,hall was occupied4 ,a communication from ,pres4 ,cravath1 published elsewhere1 states at length some of the unusually hopeful aspects of the work1 and indicates that the ,university is entering upon a larger career of usefulness than it has ever experienced4 ,the ,american ,bible ,society offers to its ,life ,members an annual grant of one dollar's worth of ,bibles or ,testaments2 its benevolent intention being to supply them with the means of distributing the word of ,god among the needy4 ,this perquisite is transferable at the written request of the ,life ,members4 ,a lady1 once a teacher in our schools at the ,south1 and who has a great interest in the welfare of the colored children1 suggests that in this way the pupils of our day and ,sunday-schools may be supplied with the sacred ,scriptures4 ,we cordially second the suggestion1 and will be glad to receive the written authorization of any of the ,life ,members of the ,bible ,society for the use of their current gift for the purpose above indicated4 ,the officers of the ,bible ,society1 as we understand1 requesting it1 with their address4 ,the closing words of the sermon1 which we append1 not only sound a note of cheer1 but are fitted to awaken the hope and courage of earnest ,christian workers everywhere4 8,the day of the ,lord is coming4 ,the light is on the hills and along the coast of all the lands4 ,the nations are coming to the ,king4 ,the continents and the islands begin to hear ,his the towel and with the basin in their hands2 a few more repetitions of that strange and sacred deed1 ,jesus washing the feet of ,judas4 ,then the glory and the rejoicing4 ,a little while and the day as clear as glass ,the first foundations of that new1 near ,day ,which should be builded out of heaven to ,god40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,power ,,of ,,right ,,principles4 ,from the beginning this ,association was wedded to right principles4 ,it recognized their latent power4 ,it took it for granted that right was expedient--that right would triumph4 ,it did not ask if right thinking and right doing was the way of the multitude1 even of the multitude of professing ,christians4 ,its inquiry was simply for the way of righteousness4 ,that way it strove to tread4 ,it was called narrow--captious4 ,its leaders were sometimes stigmatized as men of one idea--disturbers of the people--fanatics4 ,they were not time-servers1 however4 ,they had the martyr spirit and toiled on1 waiting for the morning2 and the morning came4 ,what was once questioned if not ridiculed1 is now accepted and honored4 ,the elements that entered into their early labors are needful still4 ,they had courage4 ,they dared to do right in the face of opposition4 ,if mobbed and mobbed again1 the oppression only served to fill the country with the fragrance of their good deeds4 ,it was but the torch that kindled the incense4 ,they were never drawn from a righteous purpose4 ,god was present in the shadows1 keeping watch above his own4 ,they had the spirit of sacrifice4 ,they were ready to go to the lost sheep--to the despised4 ,they passed not by him who fell among thieves4 ,they achieved distinction by their readiness to endure hardness--to submit to insult--to be counted among the few--to toil with but little appreciation and for meagre rewards4 ,they also bore about with them a rich and beautiful charity1 first pure1 then peaceable1 full of mercy and good fruits4 ,it was the combination of these elements in active operation for a score of years that served largely to revolutionize public sentiment1 and especially the sentiment in our churches1 until the principles of this ,association are accepted and acceptable4 ,the change was wrought by the power of pure motives applied to aggressive religious work in behalf of a needy and wronged people4 ,this change is sure to come in every quarter of our land1 by sufficient application of the power of right principles4 ,every mission station of this ,association is a centre from which a pure light radiates4 ,every graduate from our schools is a torch-bearer flaming this light over the land4 ,it is a question of time--of a score of years perhaps--and there will be no ostracism experienced by our teachers ,south4 ,if they can be sustained in the field1 toiling in righteousness2 if their numbers can be multiplied to meet the demand2 if the churches will make it possible to continue the work2 the victory of right principles ,south will be as certain and speedy as it was at the ,north1 and much more may be hoped for4 ,north and ,south will clap their hands together in hearty co-operation1 shouting their choruses in one grand anthem1 and entering in company upon the enlarged work of carrying right principles to the domain of final victory--the ,freedmen's fatherland4 ,to gird ourselves for that to-day is the duty which calls the servants of the ,master1 ,east1 ,west1 ,north and ,south4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,call ,,for ,,enlargement--,,shall ,,it ,,be ,,heeded8 ,at no time has the call for enlargement been more urgent4 ,it is strikingly providential also4 ,the political1 moral and religious atmosphere is charged with forces1 prophetic of unparalleled progress in our ,southern work4 ,questions relative to the policy of government are measurably settled for four years4 ,we can lay our plans with encouraging assurances4 ,sound and practical views on all that pertains to permanent prosperity are dominant4 ,it is not likely they will be materially modified1 save for the better4 ,our statesmen and philanthropists are coming to prize more and more those forces in man which are developed by a ,christian education4 ,the want that is looming up before them1 is good schools for the masses in every section of the country4 ,they voice this want in their public utterances1 and the sound thereof is echoing and re-echoing over the land4 ,it has in it the promise of expansion and universal application4 ,its adoption and elaboration mean increase of every laudable industry1 the development of commerce1 art1 science1 literature1 wealth1 beauty1 happiness4 ,they mean the leveling up of humanity heavenward4 ,the tone and temper of our best men was never more auspicious than now--never more favorable to the work of this ,association4 ,there never was so strong conviction in the ,south as now of the wisdom of ,christian education for the ,freedmen4 ,the worth of it cannot be hidden4 ,it is as evident as the sheen of an electric light4 ,there is a capacity in the heart of man1 by which he is able to recognize it4 ,he comes to do so gradually1 inevitably1 as the flower unfolds from the bud1 and as the fruit matures from the blossom4 ,many of the best in the world started wrong1 but turned about and out-stripped their fellows in well doing4 ,the ,south has been wrong1 but pour in sufficient light and it will turn about4 ,we have a right to hope and pray for such consummation4 ,the aim of our work is to hasten it4 ,when the ,south turns1 it will not be by halves1--that is not her method4 ,she is already rising for the emergency4 ,the signs of it are apparent4 ,it is but a question of time1 and the time is at hand4 ,legislatures have appropriated money for our work1 and are doing so heartily still4 ,they act as statesmen1 with a view to the best interests of the ,state4 ,in ,texas1 there is a tidal wave setting strongly in favor of popular education1 impelled by the far-sightedness which discerns that the flow of emigration of the best sort trends away from territory1 however rich and inviting1 where free schools for all classes are not abundant4 ,the value of inaugurating school work through the agency of ,christian teachers1 need not be argued4 ,the call for these teachers is sure to be more urgent than ever4 ,shall we provide for the immediate and coming want8 ,god seems to have said so4 ,we have received #aej1jjj for new buildings1 in which to train teachers4 ,new buildings mean enlargement--enlargement means more missionaries1 more prayer1 more money4 ,will not the friends of ,christ heed this call prayerfully1 promptly1 efficiently8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,holiday ,,gifts4 ,in ,december1 #ahfi1 the late ,henry ,p4 ,haven1 of ,new ,london1 ,ct41 proposed to his ,sunday-school that instead of receiving gifts they remember the words of the ,lord ,jesus1 how ,he said3 8,it is more blessed to give than to receive40 ,the proposition met with favor1 and a ,christmas service of worship with a ,christmas offering to some deserving cause became incorporated in the annual school plans4 ,it occurs to us that such holiday gifts by ,sabbath-schools and households have the following advantages3 ,one is1 they afford the young people more real pleasure4 ,the happiness from rejoicing over the good of others is an exercise of the purest affection and the finest feeling of the human heart4 ,it is akin to the blessedness and happiness of ,god himself4 ,however gratifying a gift may be to the receiver1 nevertheless it puts him to a disadvantage4 ,the gift-taker becomes under obligation to the gift-maker4 ,the receiver's joy in a gift terminates in himself4 ,it has a mixture of dependence and submission in it4 ,but the giver is placed under no obligation to the receiver4 ,moreover1 he inevitably ministers to his own well-being1 though it may be unconsciously4 8,every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts40 ,another advantage is that there is more virtue in giving than in receiving4 ,the virtue of receiving consists in regard for one's self2 the virtue of giving in a proper regard for others4 ,there is also more self-denial in giving than in receiving1 and self-denial is the essence of virtue4 ,the receiver has no natural habit or inclination to counteract1 but the giver must overcome many obstacles which require superior virtue4 ,the more young people do to develop the attribute of virtue1 the more real pleasure they are sure to experience4 ,and then again1 ,god promises to reward the giver but not the receiver4 ,this is a great consideration1 and may well be taken into account by all teachers and parents4 ,it is a good thing to make the holidays memorable and happy by giving tokens to young people1 but not so blessed as to bring them into an attitude where they will be sure of ,heavenly rewards4 ,of the few things which ,god has promised to reward men for in this life1 giving is one4 8,blessed is he that considereth the poor 99 99 99 he shall be blessed upon the earth40 8,he that hath mercy on the poor1 happy is he10 and best of all1 ,god means to reward the liberal giver more fully at the resurrection of the just4 ,by the favor of ,providence we have ample opportunity to give to humane and missionary enterprises4 ,at this season1 when plans for celebrating the holidays are being matured1 would it not be wise for those having responsibility for training the young1 to embrace the time to teach them in their abundance of gift-taking and gift-making to provide for themselves 8bags that wax not old1 a treasure in the ,heavens that faileth not40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,review ,,and ,,outlook4 ,a ,paper read at the ,national ,council at ,st4 ,louis1 ,nov4 #acth4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,m4 ,e4 ,,strieby1 ,d4 ,d4 ,i intend1 without preface1 to review the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association for the last three years1 and to give an outlook on its future duties4 ,i4 ,the ,review4 #a4 ,we have paid our great debt4 ,this had clung to us for years1 like the shirt of ,nessus1 scorching while it clung4 ,at the last ,council we were enabled to announce that we had rent away about one third of the hateful garment1 during the next two years we tore off the remainder1 and since then we have walked forth1 financially1 8,clad in raiment pure and white10 as becometh saints who should 8,owe no man anything40 ,it may happen to us in the future that our books will sometimes show a balance on the wrong side2 but we hope never again to be beguiled into putting on one of the large1 iron-clad garments we had so long and sadly worn4 #b4 ,we have received the munificent gift of #aej1jjj from ,mrs4 ,stone4 ,not long since1 our elder and honored sister1 the ,american ,board1 had laid on her table a loaf so large that there was danger that it might be like the 8,cake of barley bread0 which the ,midianite saw in his dream1 that 8tumbled into the host and came unto a tent and smote it that it fell1 and overturned it that the tent lay along40 ,but with the whole church1 we rejoice that the loaf has been to the ,board1 by its great wisdom and ,god's blessing1 not as the cake of the ,midianite1 but as his dream1 an augury of victory and enlargement6 ,our gift1 great as it was1 is only as one of 8the crumbs that fall from the ,master's table10 most gratefully received and all needed at once1 with no danger of surfeit4 ,our children are not only hungry--they are crowded into close quarters1 and some of them have to be turned out of doors4 ,at the ,atlanta ,university1 with accommodations for only #dj girls1 #fb are packed in4 ,at ,tougaloo1 barracks of slabs are erected1 and outbuildings and garrets are turned into dormitories1 and still the pupils come1 so that the teachers inquire if they may put three in a bed and twelve in one large room4 ,our reply is3 8,take all that you can accommodate consistently with good health and morals1 and send the rest away40 ,these are specimens1 perhaps the most striking1 but from nearly every school comes the call for more room4 ,never before have we had such overcrowding2 never before have we been obliged to turn away so many4 ,mrs4 ,stone's great gift will meet the want in five of our larger institutions and no more2 and that only for shelter1 while the increased number will make an enlarged call for bread4 ,mrs4 ,stone provides the homes3 who will furnish the endowments for more teachers and the scholarships for more pupils8 #c4 ,we are just completing the ,tillotson ,institute1 ,austin1 ,texas1 with its large and commodious building and beautiful campus of eight acres1 near the capitol--an outpost in that vast ,state of the ,southwest2 thus extending our permanent institutions from ,hampton ,roads1 ,va41 to the banks of the ,colorado1 ,texas1 and supplying eight of the largest ,southern ,states with schools of higher grade1 each of which sends out annually its score or fifty well-trained teachers4 #d4 ,it is a matter of much gratification to us that while we have been paying our debt and extending our lines1 we have been able to maintain1 and even to enlarge1 the work already in hand among the ,freedmen4 ,three years ago our teaching force in the ,south numbered #aej2 now there are #bjj4 ,then our pupils were #e1djd2 now #h1jeb4 ,one illustration of the usefulness of these schools is seen in the great army of scholars taught in them and by their pupils4 ,we believe1 from a safe estimate1 that half a million of names have been enrolled1 in the aggregate1 in our schools and the schools of our pupils1 since this ,council last met1 and still the cry is for more teachers4 ,this roll-call of the school-room gives no idea of the added work in the ,sunday-school1 the temperance cause1 the prayer meeting and in the homes of the people4 ,as to the kind of work done in our schools1 and ,theological departments1 ,i point to the modest and gentlemanly ,second ,assistant ,moderator of this ,national ,council4 ,our church work has grown slowly1 but steadily and safely4 ,three years ago our churches in the ,south numbered #ei1 now there are #gc4 ,when we began our labors among the ,freedmen there was not one ,congregational church in the old ,south4 ,the famous ,central ,church in ,charleston1 ,s4 ,c41 was not really ,congregational1 and that in ,liberty ,co41 ,ga41 had become ,presbyterian4 ,it is said that the soil in the ,south is not congenial to our churches4 ,it must be admitted that they will not flourish in the same soil with slavery1 nor where its roots still live2 but as the introduction of clover kills ill weeds1 root and branch1 and not only yields a good harvest in mowing time1 but also enriches the ground for all other crops1 so the planting of ,congregational churches in the ,south will help to destroy the roots of slavery1 give a good crop for the ,master1 and enrich the field for all other churches4 ,we are confident that our clover-sowing in the ,south is coming to be regarded by both whites and blacks not as supplanting others1 but enriching all4 #e4 ,the flow of ,chinamen to the ,pacific coast is not increasing1 but the work we are doing among those now there is as hopeful as any we are attempting4 ,many are turning from idol worship and giving evidence of genuine conversion4 ,such men as ,jee ,gam1 so intelligent1 so modest1 so pious1 are proof that the work is not superficial2 and the eagerness of those converts as well as their teachers to extend the effort to the ,chinese in the mines1 and even to carry the ,gospel to ,china1 is proof of a missionary spirit as well as of genuine piety4 #f4 ,the new movement for the education of ,indian youth in schools at the ,east1 begun three years ago at ,hampton by ,capt4 ,pratt1 deserves encouragement1 not as superseding the schools among the tribes1 but as helping them4 ,the sending of these young people from their homes has attracted the attention of the ,indians to the subject of education more than any other thing that has taken place for years2 and the correspondence which has sprung up between the parents and the children1 as well as the return of the educated pupils1 will deepen the interest4 ,we have aided some of the pupils at ,hampton1 and we are disposed to consider the earnest wish of ,capt4 ,pratt1 now in charge of the ,government ,school for ,indian youth at ,carlisle ,barracks1 that we extend the effort into several of our schools in the ,south4 ,gen4 ,armstrong's experience at ,hampton shows that the joint education of the ,indian and ,negro pupils is a success1 that they are helpful to each other4 ,with this rapid sketch of our work among the three neglected races in ,america1 and extending from the ,atlantic to the ,pacific coast1 ,i pass to the next item in this review--where we follow the negro to his home in the land of his fathers4 #g4 ,the ,mendi ,mission in ,africa4 ,when the ,council met in ,detroit we had just sent out our first company of ,freedmen as missionaries to ,africa4 ,three years is not long enough to warrant absolute conclusions1 yet such as we have reached ,i give4 #a4 ,we are very hopeful as to the ability of the colored ,american to endure the climate of ,africa4 #b4 ,we are a little disappointed as to his qualifications in ripeness of judgment and maturity of character1 for the duties of a missionary4 ,perhaps we expected too much4 ,the white missionary has behind him the culture of seventeen centuries2 the colored of seventeen years6 ,but of the fitness of the few now1 and ultimately of many1 we have no doubt4 ,we must select at first more carefully1 and train the rest more fully4 ,nor have we any question as to the call of ,god to these ,freedmen to carry the ,gospel to ,africa1 and we 8bate not a jot of heart or hope0 in our work of preparing and sending them4 ,the discouragements we share with all the noble societies that have responded to the grand impulse inspired by the wonderful discoveries of ,livingstone1 ,stanley and others2 nay1 with all who in every age have heard the ,divine call for great enterprises in behalf of religion and humanity4 ,god begins his great movements by preliminary trials and disappointments2 in them only are heroes and martyrs trained4 ,persecutions were essential to the success of the primitive church4 ,bull ,run saved the republic and overthrew slavery2 and our confidence in the ,divine purposes for ,africa are all the stronger for the discipline at the outset4 ,he means no holiday parade1 but thorough1 apostolic sacrifice and success4 ,and lastly1 #h4 ,to pay that debt and to carry on our work1 with its enlargements1 its endowments and buildings1 we have1 in these three years1 received into our treasury six hundred and twenty-seven thousand dollars4 ,if we add the sums received by our affiliated schools 7#bhc1acb71 the amount is nine hundred and ten thousand dollars2 and if we add to this the one hundred and fifty thousand dollars received from ,mrs4 ,stone1 now rapidly to be expended1 the total will be one million and sixty thousand dollars6 ,the churches seem to have had confidence in us1 and to have appreciated our work4 ,for this1 through you1 we wish to thank them1 and to ask continued confidence and the means to carry on the enlarged work that opens before us4 ,,ii4 ,the work before us4 ,when we turn from what we have done to what we have yet to do1 we are overawed at both its vastness and its pressing urgency4 #a4 ,whatever other danger threatens this republic1 or calls for the labors of its ,christian people1 that arising from the three colored races is1 ,i do not say the greatest1 but the most obvious4 ,the vast influx of ,european peoples does indeed1 awaken serious apprehension1 for they bring with them infidelity or ,romanism2 yet thus far no overt peril has arisen from this source1 for they have so spread themselves among the masses that their influence has gathered to no focal point4 ,but the ,indian has been an irritant throughout the whole history of our occupancy of the land1 and in all parts of it4 ,blood has flowed freely in the track of our wrongs against him1 and will do so until we act like ,christians and he becomes one4 ,the ,chinamen on our ,western coast are few1 and yet how their coming has shaken the nerves of the nation6 ,what other set of immigrants1 so few in number1 has excited so much irritation--not on their part1 but among ourselves about them8 ,but the great disturber--yet the utterly unintentional disturber--of the peace of this nation1 is the negro4 ,for nearly half a century the storm has raged around him1 as around ,elijah in ,horeb--the wind of tempestuous discussion in pulpit1 press and ,congress2 the earthquake1 rending asunder trade-interests1 religious denominations1 dividing even the nation itself into two hostile sections2 the lurid and awful fire of war1 with its blood1 carnage and desolation4 ,last of all came 8the still1 small voice10 and ,god was in it4 ,but how little has it been heeded4 ,the wind is scarcely lulled2 the earthquake is quiet but the dreadful chasms remain2 the fires are smouldering1 but now and then a darting flame of ,ku ,klux outrage or a ,chisholm murder reveals the pent-up heat below6 ,then as to the anointing6 ,elijah anointed the kings and the prophet--giving thereby the grace to do the ,divine behests1 whether of vengeance or mercy4 ,we have enacted the ,freedman into a king where all are sovereigns1 and a prophet where all the ,lord's people are priests1 but we have not given him the knowledge or the spiritual grace that alone can anoint him as a king or priest4 ,the source of the special irritation in regard to these races is not far to seek4 ,if a man moves into your neighborhood who is of your own race and color1 though you may differ from him in theories of trade1 politics or religion1 yet assimilation and esteem may arise4 ,but if he has a tawny skin1 delights in the promiscuous use of the tomahawk and scalping knife1 and withal claims an ancient title to the very land you occupy2 or if he has a yellow face1 wears a cue1 eats with chop-sticks and is willing to work fifty per cent4 cheaper than you can2 or if he has a black face1 with the stigma of slavery and caste-prejudice upon him1 then the case is altered2 assimilation and friendship are not so easy4 ,but these people are here and they must stay2 they are so numerous that you cannot ignore them2 you must choose between leaving them as they are1 a perpetual source of annoyance and danger1 or training them to become useful citizens4 ,moreover1 they are your neighbors1 fallen among thieves1 which stripped them of their raiment and wounded them1 and you must choose between the part of the priest and ,levite or of the good ,samaritan4 ,the meanest of them all is your brother1 and you are your brother's keeper4 ,but if you mean to act the part of a neighbor and a brother to these great multitudes1 you have no small job on hand--which brings me to my next point4 #b4 ,the dangers and the duties of emancipation4 ,the nation that emancipates a large number of slaves assumes a grave responsibility4 ,this is increased if the emancipation is immediate and the ex-slaves remain on the soil1 and especially if they differ widely in race from the master-class4 ,all these difficulties attach to our ,act of ,emancipation2 but they are not an argument against emancipation4 ,the old abolitionists were right--immediate emancipation was the nation's duty4 ,no preparation could be made for the change before it took place--slavery must be supreme or nothing4 ,the safety lies alone in the wise after-treatment4 ,then or never1 and soon if ever1 must the ,freedman be prepared for his new position4 ,we have striking illustrations at hand4 ,we begin with the nearest in point of time3 ,in #ahfa ,russia emancipated nearly fifty millions of serfs4 ,this was the result of a ground-swell of popular sentiment demanding some break in the iron-clad despotism of an absolute monarchy4 ,the next year the empire completed a thousand years of national existence4 ,in the joyful enthusiasm over these two great events1 there arose a strong hope of the advent of constitutional liberty4 ,the changes1 however1 were few and utterly disappointing2 and the issue of emancipation scarcely less so1 involving the ruin of most of the landed aristocracy1 and the ignorance1 idleness and intemperance of a large share of the serfs4 ,and now1 after twenty years of unrelaxed despotism and the continued deterioration of the masses1 the educated people in ,russia see no better remedy than ,nihilism6 ,in #ahcd ,great ,britain emancipated #hjj1jjj slaves in the ,west ,indies1 giving #bj1jjj as compensation to the masters1 but making almost no provision for the education and religious instruction of the negroes4 ,the hour of emancipation presented a touching scene in many places4 ,slavery ended on the midnight that ushered in the first of ,august1 and the negro population1 engaged in devotional exercises till that hour1 were then on their knees and awaiting in silence the gift of the great boon of freedom coming from the hand of ,god6 ,that was the auspicious era for beginning the work of elevating this inoffensive and willing people4 ,but the golden moment was lost1 for with inadequate provision for schools and churches1 they gradually sunk in ignorance and superstition1 back almost to ,african fetishism4 ,so hopeless was the field that this ,association withdrew its missionaries1 and at length the ,british ,government1 aroused to its mistake1 and after the loss of one third of a century of most precious time1 established a thorough system of common schools4 ,the tide begins slowly to turn4 ,in remoter years ,god himself became the emancipator of about two millions of slaves4 ,even ,he did not attempt the task of leaving them on the soil to meet the scorn or the power of the masters4 ,but ,he showed ,his appreciation of their need of education and religious training by halting almost immediately after setting out on their long journey and opening a church-school on ,mount ,sinai4 ,that most wonderful of all schools was kept there for a whole year--,god himself the teacher4 ,and when their journey was resumed1 ,he directed in the construction of a portable church-school edifice in which instruction was continued till their journey's end4 ,god's appreciation of the need of homes for the ex-slaves is seen in the fact that ,he had employed gangs1--not of men1 but of nations--for centuries in clearing the land1 building houses1 and planting olive-yards and vine-yards for them4 ,this act of emancipation must be the model for ,christian nations1 so far as the circumstances are the same4 ,there must be no preliminary apprenticeship1 but immediate emancipation1 followed by prompt1 thorough1 and persistent training of the people in knowledge1 piety1 and in acquiring homes4 ,i call attention lastly to #c4 ,the results and outlook of our own emancipation4 ,let us consider these1 not as is usually done1 from the standpoint either of the politician of the ,north1 or the planter of the ,south1 but from that of the negro himself4 ,with all its glory1 emancipation has brought to the negro three great disappointments4 7#a47 ,education was to him the talisman of the master's power1 and above all1 it was the key to open the long concealed treasures of ,god's word4 ,he stretched forth his hand for it as if it were ,aladdin's lamp1 which by a few touches would reveal the hidden riches4 ,but there was no magic in the lamp2 it showed him only a long and difficult road1 that by patient and persevering travel would bring him to the coveted knowledge4 ,then1 again1 the common school fund of the ,south gives him but few schools1 and those are open but for a short time1 while his own necessities bend him down to the struggle for existence1 and allow him little means to educate his children1 or power to spare them from work in the field4 7#b47 ,his next great disappointment was in the ballot4 ,this1 too1 he had seized with avidity as the symbol of sovereign power--the one grand test of equality with the master4 ,in two states he wielded it in uncontrolled majority1 but his use of it was so disgraceful to himself and so ruinous to the state1 that his friends were amazed and his foes exasperated4 ,he showed that he lacked the intelligence to wield this great power1 and the strength of character to resist its temptations2 and now the symbol is wrenched from his grasp and he is once more helpless before superior knowledge4 7#c47 ,his last disappointment was as to the ownership of land4 ,what visions floated before him of land that he could call his own and of a home that he might adorn and use for himself and family4 ,it is wonderful to see how much he has done to realize this vision4 ,but this1 too1 in large measure eludes his grasp4 ,if he rents he must pay a rental almost equal to the value of the land2 and if he buys1 he must take the united toil of himself and family to pay for it2 and hence his dilemma4 ,if he buys his home1 he cannot educate his children2 if he educates them1 he cannot buy the home6 ,do we wonder that with the crushing of these 8great expectations10 and with as little hope in most cases of seeing things better as when he was a slave1 he yields to despair1 and rather than 8bear the ills he has he flies to others that he knows not of10 and that ,kansas becomes his refuge8 ,the ,kansas refugees are not the most hopeless of the colored people2 they1 at least1 have the energy to flee4 ,but there are large numbers that are content to sink to the bottom and stay there2 they are the water in the hold that threatens to drag down the ship4 ,yet1 thank ,god1 there is still another portion1 not so large1 but more hopeful and enterprising than either1 that get homes and educate their children4 ,these are the ones whose children crowd our schools2 they are the hope of the race2 they have the right ideal--that an education1 of heart as well as head1 is the rod of ,god in the hand of man2 that makes character1 wields the ballot1 wins the home and works the land6 ,this is the class to help first1 and this is the way to help--give them the good school and the pure church4 ,the emergency was too great to brook delay4 ,this ,association did not wait4 ,it struck in at this point at the outset and has stuck to it ever since4 ,it is on the right track1 as is now admitted on all sides4 ,pres4 ,hayes utters the practical sentiment of the nation1 and he but echoes what ,judge ,tourgee1 the author of 8,a ,fool's ,errand10 representing the radical opinions of the ,north1 and ,rev4 ,dr4 ,ruffner1 ,supt4 of ,public ,instruction of ,virginia1 representing the conservative views of the ,south1 had already uttered1 that there is no way of making the ,freedmen safe members of society but by educating them4 ,to the colored people themselves nothing is more inspiring and helpful than the kind of work achieved by the ,american ,missionary ,association in your behalf4 ,when these people recall the little handful of their number that cowered under the guns of ,fort ,monroe for protection and the little school opened there1 and now see the large buildings at ,hampton1 the broad farm and the busy workshops in which their children are trained2 when they remember the scowling looks of the masters in ,atlanta when ,gen4 ,sherman had gone1 and now see the ,atlanta ,university1 visited by those old masters--and the best of them--who come away with commendations so warm1 that the state grants #h1jjj a year to the education of their children1 when they think of the timid crowds of their people in ,nashville at the close of the war1 and now see ,jubilee ,hall1 sung into existence by their children1 who have called forth the tribute of tears from crowned heads abroad as well as people at home2 when1 in short1 they see all over the ,south such schools taught by teachers from the ,north1 and behold their children going forth year by year1 by scores and hundreds to teach and to preach1 this is to them the manna that sustains them in their wilderness journey4 ,will you help us to multiply that bread1 as ,jesus did when ,he fed the multitudes1 saying--8give ye them to eat08 ,multiply it not only for the thrifty and enterprising1 but multiply it for the discouraged ones now ready to flee to ,kansas6 ,yea1 multiply it so abundantly that the most hopeless and degraded may be fed by it and become strong2 and then you will have helped save the ,freedmen and the nation1 and will have helped win a victory for caste-crushed people over all the world--a victory for freedom1 humanity and religion6 99 99 99 99 99 ,,what ,,our ,,african ,,methodist ,,friends ,,think4 ,the ,christian ,recorder asks3 8,what is the lesson taught us by the rapid growth of our sister colored churches1 the ,presbyterian and ,episcopal especially8 ,that they are growing1 and most rapidly1 too1 he who runs may read4 ,but what is the lesson it has for us ,methodists8 ,plainly that we shall put no more ignorant men and no more trifling men into the ministry4 ,to continue to do so is to sound our death knell for the future4 ,ignorant men and trifling men as religious teachers may satisfy the older generations of our people1 but the younger will insist upon one of two things--give us an intelligent1 dignified pulpit1 or we will go where we can get it4 ,we are already losing too many of our children2 nor will the stampede ever stop1 until our conferences stop opening the door to every one who knocks40 ,this is from the able and influential organ of the ,african ,m4 ,e4 ,church1 published at ,philadelphia4 ,not long since we transferred to these columns1 from the same paper1 a similar article1 in which the editor used the high quality of the educational and church work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 at the ,south in the same way1 as a spur to his people4 ,we commend his wisdom in the case4 ,perhaps no more effective stimulus could be applied4 ,surely this great and growing denomination1 with its own 8,wilberforce ,university10 and with access to all of our institutions for the training of its ministers1 cannot afford to put off 8ignorant and trifling0 pastors upon the young ,america of its constituency4 ,they must have 8an intelligent and a dignified pulpit0 or these young folks will stampede4 ,that former article warned its hearers that the greatest rival of the ,a4 ,m4 ,e4 was the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,in the sense of provoking to love and to good works we are willing to enter the lists4 ,and herein--the helping of the old-time colored churches of the ,south to a public sentiment that demands more of purity and of education in their ministry--we find much of our incentive and of our languish4 ,calisthenics1 also1 constitute a part of the training4 ,we found the buildings and grounds in the best of order1 evidencing the same watchful eyes which overlooked the entire ,institution4 ,the school-rooms and furniture were entirely free from defacements of any kind1 showing a marked difference in this respect between the ,atlanta ,university and most other colleges4 ,an interesting feature is the ,library1 composed of a collection of about five thousand volumes1 selected wisely for the purpose of interesting as well as instructing the scholars4 ,to the library there have been added during the past year1 three hundred new books of recent publication4 ,in connection with the library is a reading room1 in which can be found the leading magazines and daily papers4 ,the future of the ,university seems truly bright1 and a better opportunity can never be given our colored citizens for a thorough education4 ,we commend the entire corps of instructors1 and must express the confidence which we feel in the capacity of the president1 ,mr4 ,ware1 and in his fitness for the position which he occupies4 ,in conclusion1 we think it proper to dwell for a moment upon the fact that the ,atlanta ,university1 besides the influence which it wields directly upon its scholars1 reaches1 through the many who pass out from its walls as teachers1 almost the entire colored population of our ,state4 ,while the mental man is being developed1 the moral man is carefully trained1 and temperance and religion are important parts of the instruction given4 ,from this ,college1 ,georgia is from outside the city of ,nashville is thirty per cent4 greater than at the same time one year ago4 ,the result is that the limit of our boarding accommodations has been already nearly reached1 and the anxious inquiry is forcing itself upon us1 ,what shall we do with the large number of students who desire1 and are planning1 to come during the next three months8 #b4 ,the grade of scholarship in the case of new students is considerably advanced over that of former years4 ,there have been no additions to the regular college classes1 but four have entered the senior1 three the middle1 and six the junior college preparatory classes4 ,as advanced students are the ones desired in such an institution as this1 it is a source of great encouragement that the number of such is steadily increasing year by year4 #c4 ,there is on the part of the students a growing comprehension of the value and of the necessity of a thorough education1 and consequently a very much stronger desire and purpose to take long courses of study4 ,this is one of the most hopeful facts connected with our work4 ,it required a wonderful amount of determination and patience on the part of both professors and students to engineer the first classes through a college course of study4 ,there was no public sentiment in the community1 and no sentiment among parents or friends of the students1 to encourage and stimulate to long courses of study4 ,but a great change for the better has been wrought4 ,the steady1 persistent work of the past fifteen years1 which has resulted in the graduation of five small classes from the we are a thousand years ahead of them in the line of development4 ,progress is measured by development4 ,education is not progress but is a means of it4 ,a brain full of book knowledge1 whose physical illustration of it ,i know of4 ,yet he never had over two years' schooling1 and went from his workshop to the war4 ,work for the ex-captives was so encouraging1 the need of educated ,indian girls so
