a pastor1 and more recently a ,professor of ,theology in ,fisk ,university1 and connected with its financial management4 ,he brings to the work a ripe scholarship1 the pen of a ready writer1 and a deep interest in the varied work in which the ,association is engaged4 ,the retirement of the ,rev4 ,geo4 ,m4 ,boynton1 who1 for several years1 has acted as ,editor of the ,,missionary1 is felt to be a great loss to the ,association4 ,his peculiar skill in editing1 his facility in writing1 and his quick apprehension of current events bearing on our work1 enabled him to give to our magazine a freshness and attractiveness it never before had attained4 ,mr4 ,boynton's usefulness as a member of our ,executive ,committee makes his loss to us the greater4 ,in his new pastorate in ,jamaica ,plain1 ,boston1 he bears with him the warmest affection and best wishes of the officers of the ,association4 99 99 99 99 99 ,as we make our bow after the above graceful introduction by our honored ,senior ,secretary1 we are conscious that all eyes are turned regretfully toward the departing1 rather than hopefully to the incoming1 ,editor4 ,we are in the position similar to that of a new minister1 who is told as he makes his first pastoral visits1 8,we never expect to love another pastor as we loved ,mr4 ,b40 ,we are glad for all that makes our position difficult1 and suggest as the only remedy for the loss the ,,missionary must otherwise sustain in the retirement of ,mr4 ,boynton1 that all who feel it1 shall make the appropriate effort to prevent it4 ,let our teachers and missionaries understand1 that they must come to the rescue by prompt and faithful reports of every phase of their work2 giving us rich material from which to select what1 from our stand-point1 appears the thing to be said at any given time4 ,let ,pastors and ,superintendents1 and other co-laborers1 feel that they must stand between this work and loss1 and double their diligence1 and quicken their zeal1 in keeping their churches and schools informed and interested2 and1 finally1 let all who have felt an impulse to give more1 show their appreciation of the late ,editor's good work by such an ,a41 in the ,nile basin4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we are glad to know that ,dr4 ,g4 ,b4 ,willcox1 whose presence and counsels are sadly missed in our ,committee meetings1 loses none of his enthusiasm for the ,american ,missionary ,association and its work1 because of his new home and new duties4 ,at a recent meeting in ,dr4 ,noble's church in ,chicago1 he read an address which we wish could be put into the hands of every ,christian1 and of every citizen1 in the land4 ,it is too long to print in our pages1 and too consecutive to dismember without marring4 ,we hope he may have calls to deliver it before the other churches of that city1 and of other cities1 ,east and ,west4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we fear that a fact1 stated by ,mrs4 ,hill in our last number1 has not been fully taken in by our readers4 ,writing from ,marion1 ,ala41 of her work among the children1 she said1 incidentally1 and most of us read it without comprehending it1 8,the girls' sewing-class has sent #ch to the ,mendi ,mission40 ,the 8,,girls' ,,sewing-,,class60 8,,thirty-,,eight ,,dollars60 ,sunday-school workers of ,new ,england1 think what that means6 ,we venture to say there is scarce a ,sunday-school connected with one of our churches in ,new ,england where the same amount of money would cost a girls' sewing-class one-half the self-denial and labor that is represented by this #ch for the ,mendi ,mission4 ,and it came from a colored girls' sewing-class6 99 99 99 99 99 ,some time since1 a request came from a teacher in one of our institutions to the ,sunday-school of the ,second ,congregational ,church in ,rockville1 ,conn41 that it should raise #gj for a promising young man who1 for lack of it1 must leave his studies4 ,the matter was brought before the school and laid over for consideration4 ,on the next ,sabbath1 a class of young men1 every one of whom was earning his own living1 stated that it would assume the responsibility for the whole amount4 ,to raise this money did not hurt them2 on the contrary1 it did them as much good as it did the one who received it4 ,what if this same spirit should become epidemic in our schools6 ,the ,sunday-school at ,kenosha1 ,wis41 when its pastor read to it ,president ,cravath's article in the ,october ,,missionary1 entitled 8,what shall we do80 promptly responded by sending a check for #ej4 ,pastors1 ,sunday-school superintendents and teachers1 it is not a difficult thing to do1 but a most easy1 and as blessed as easy1 to enlist your young people in this beneficent work2 beneficent not alone in relation to the ignorant negroes1 but to your own young people4 ,the needs of our work are great1 but the need that our ,sunday-school children and young people be educated out of narrow1 selfish views of life1 is even more urgent4 ,let this double education go forward steadily and by organized effort2 thus shall sower and reaper rejoice together1 and it will be difficult to tell the one from the other in their mutual joy and benefit1 for both the genius of this people is reaching out into new fields of effort4 99 99 99 99 99 ,facts are facts positeevely1 as ,dr4 ,john ,brown's ,scotch beadle would say1 and will assert and establish themselves if we can only have patience in well-doing4 ,the professor of ,greek in one of the ,state ,colleges of the ,south said to us1 some months since3 8,i spent a day in ,fisk ,university1 and as ,i am1 and have been all my life1 a teacher of ,greek1 was curious to see what the negro could do with that language2 and1 sir1 ,i should be most proud and happy if ,i had twenty boys in my ,college who could recite ,greek as ,i heard that number of boys and girls reciting it in that school40 ,the teacher of these boys and girls was a young colored woman1 #bb years of age1 herself a graduate of the school in which she was then teaching4 99 99 99 99 99 ,among the many indications of the growing interest taken by the best class of ,southern people in the educational work of our schools1 we note the frequent kindly notices1 given in the daily papers of the cities in which our schools are located1 of anything that concerns the work4 ,we clip the following from the ,morning ,ledger1 of ,memphis1 in appreciative mention of the lecture course before ,le ,moyne ,institute of that city3 8,it is an encouraging sign of the times when such men as ,dr4 ,maury1 ,judge ,morgan1 ,col4 ,eaton1 and ,judge ,hammond give their time and talents for the instruction and elevation of the colored race1 especially when these people show a disposition and a capacity for moral and intellectual improvement4 ,it is an indisputable evidence of the amiable relations of the two races1 and gives assurance that the traces of the war1 and its bad passions1 are wearing out1 and that we have entered upon a peaceful1 law-abiding era1 with a good basis for solid prosperity40 ,at the close of the last lecture1 delivered by ,rev4 ,mr4 ,trible1 ,col4 ,l4 ,b4 ,eaton arose1 and after reference to the success of the course and its good results to the community1 proposed1 as appreciative of the lecture and expressive of their interest in the object1 that they should take a collection1 which resulted in over #cj for the library of the school4 ,we learn that these lectures have been prepared with the same care as if intended for the most cultivated white audiences1 and without condescension or patronage1 were delivered as if addressed to an audience of young men and women without any hint1 direct or implied1 of race1 color1 or previous condition4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,gen4 ,,grant',s ,,reception ,straight ,university4 ,we have also a more full account in the ,new ,orleans ,times1 but we can offer our readers in this number only the shorter narrative4 ,dr4 ,roy writes3 8,we gave a reception to ,gen4 ,grant in the chapel4 ,flags were displayed at the front and behind the platform1 with the big map on the wall and a placard #8,our ,country4' ,the school and the patrons filled the hall4 ,prof4 ,mc,pherron led his scholars in some exquisite classic music2 ,prof4 ,alexander made the welcoming address in behalf of the ,straight ,university4 ,gen4 ,grant responded in one of his laconic and fitting speeches1 which was greatly satisfactory to the colored people4 ,gen4 ,grant said3 8#8,it is a good sign to see such a ,university as this attended by colored people who were for so long deprived of any such advantage4 ,those who have gone before you had no such advantages4 ,but by the gift of these institutions1 those here are taking the first great step towards improving the advantages guaranteed to them by the ,constitution4 ,great advantages are given these people by the provisions of the ,constitution and the ,amendments1 and the colored people are coming to improve them4 ,the privilege of emigration is permitted and allowed to any people4 ,but other things being equal1 every one is happiest in passing his life in the locality where he was born4 ,so that ,i am of a medival barbarism in our midst80 he says3 8,the remedy is one that must be applied from the outside4 ,the remedy for darkness is light2 for ignorance1 knowledge2 for wrong1 righteousness4 ,the nation nourished and protected slavery4 ,the fruitage of slavery has been the ignorant freedman1 the ignorant poor white man1 and the arrogant master4 ,now1 let the nation undo the evil it has permitted and encouraged2 let it educate those whom it made ignorant1 and protect those whom it made weak4 ,it is not a matter of favor to the black1 but of safety to the nation4 ,make the spelling-book the sceptre of national power4 ,let the nation educate the colored man and the poor white man1 because the nation held them in bondage1 and is responsible for their education2 educate the voter1 because the nation cannot afford that he should be ignorant4 ,honest ignorance in the masses is more to be dreaded than malevolent intelligence in the few40 ,we express no opinion as to his method for applying this remedy1 as it would lead to a discussion of political questions with which1 as such1 we have nothing to do4 ,but that the remedy for1 and the provision against1 these threatening evils1 is the education of these people1 of this there can be no doubt4 ,we are happy to say1 also1 that the work already accomplished by our schools is dissipating the fears1 conciliating the prejudices1 and disarming the hostility of the ,southern people1 who are coming more and more to appreciate and sympathize with the effort to educate the ,negro1 and in helpful ways to co-operate with us in this work4 ,the remedy1 indeed1 must come from without2 but it is beginning to operate1 and the most hopeful symptom of healthful action is that the patient begins to appreciate and demand it4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,southern ,,negroes ,,in ,,new ,,york ,,city4 ,in our efforts to find out the needs of the emigrants for ,liberia1 now in ,new ,york1 we have discovered facts in regard to the are of ,northern birth4 ,a church organized two years ago1 with #ba members1 has now a membership of #aej1 and a congregation of about #hjj1 all of whom are from the ,south4 ,they now worship in a ex-slave from ,norfolk1 ,virginia4 ,now1 in regard to the refugees themselves1 we believe an attendance upon the meeting in ,dr4 ,garnet's church1 called to organize and systematize the effort to care for them1 would have proved a radical cure for chronic and most persistent doubt as to the negroes' ability to meet an emergency4 ,the overflowing charity of that meeting was only matched by the wisdom1 prudence and skill with which it was managed4 ,if the ,christian churches and friends of ,christ would but seek out1 and bring as prominently before the public1 facts1 of which there are many1 such as the above1 showing the rapid progress these people are making under great discouragements1 as the police courts and enemies of the negro report and dwell upon those which show his degradation1 we are confident he would be held in much higher estimation4 ,we venture to say that a like number of refugees of any other race1 in as great destitution1 with a similar story of wrongs1 whether true or false1 could not be so quietly stowed away in ,new ,york1 or left to be cared for so exclusively by their own people4 ,there have been no urgent appeals to the public1 and either none at all1 or with the ladies themselves1 and1 as far as we can judge1 has been inaugurated and will be carried forward with great wisdom and efficiency1 and with no spirit of rivalry1 but with the utmost ,christian women of this land in the several denominations in co-operation with the great ,missionary ,boards8 ,but while we cannot prophesy of the future of this new society1 yet the success of those we have mentioned encourages us to anticipate for it a glorious career4 ,there certainly is room in this our land1 among the women and children of less favored portions and races1 for the widest and schools1 was received with much interest1 and the manner in which it treated the question1 8,how shall we inspire a spirit of womanhood in our young women and girls80 highly commended4 ,the whole spirit of the meeting showed that this subject was uppermost in the hearts of the workers1 and that they realized that the colored women must be helped in their homes1 if we would reach the entire community4 ,the ,conference1 after hearing an account of the meeting1 passed a resolution expressing great interest in it1 and approving the advance step connecting it with the new ,home ,missionary and conducting it4 ,by the way1 he is the young man recently mentioned in the ,advance1 who refused a position1 worth #be per month1 in a store1 because whiskey was sold there1 which he might sometimes have to handle4 ,it takes moral backbone in this country to stand up for temperance4 ,i learned something of this young man's history4 ,he is making every effort to educate himself and at the same time partially supports a widowed mother with her large family4 ,he will make his mark in the world2 moreover1 what he is as to character is largely due to the faithful efforts of a patient teacher4 ,a large number of visitors were present2 among them ,rev4 ,mr4 ,woodsmall1 ,principal of the ,baptist ,school at ,selma1 and others1 many of whom favored us with short addresses1 which were
