with both teaching and preaching force2 but for the lack of a few hundred dollars to erect a cheap1 and yet adequate building for school and church1 both are hindered in growth and usefulness1 and if the means be not soon furnished1 might as well be abandoned4 ,our industrial schools suffer for want of funds4 ,the colored students are so poor that unless aid can in small amounts be furnished them1 either by facilities for work or by help in money1 many of them must abandon the effort for an education4 ,these items as to school and church work are but samples of what come to us from all parts of the field4 ,but there are other calls of special importance4 ,no ,state in the ,south is growing more rapidly than ,texas4 ,a generous friend of the colored race has purchased an eligible lot of eight acres in ,austin1 ,texas1 and given it to us as the site of a colored institution4 ,he and other friends have added gifts amounting to nearly #aj1jjj1 towards the erection of a substantial building4 ,we shall begin the structure this spring1 but will only enclose it1 unless the means are furnished to complete it4 ,we will make no debt4 ,we hope--nay1 we plead--that the money may be speedily attractive of all ,new ,england villages4 ,if any other town in the ,east can furnish a roll of better men1 women and children than those who adorn the beautiful ,christian homes of ,stamford1 then ,i want to go there and attend a ,jubilee ,concert exercise4 ,the preparation at ,stamford was complete4 ,,all1 from the excellent pastor up to the oldest deacon1 and down to the youngest child1 took part4 ,the able and enthusiastic superintendent1 ,mr4 ,junius ,smith1 is a born missionary1 and he led his ,sunday-school host into the work with great earnestness4 ,the church was filled at an early fertility of that land1 now comparatively barren and desolate1 that it at one time sustained a population so dense that if the vast territory of the ,united ,states were thus thickly settled1 it should have not merely forty millions of inhabitants1 but one thousand one hundred and forty millions4 ,who doubts that such a population might be sustained on the fat valleys of the interior and the plantations of the south country1 even though the waste places of the wilderness were left out of the account as utterly unfit for the dwelling-places of men8 ,and1 as though this vast heritage of ours were not enough for a free and industrious people1 ,god has over many portions of the land practically doubled its area2 piling its resources of wealth layer upon layer2 rivaling and redoubling the riches of the surface soil by the exhaustless stores of coal1 iron and copper1 lead1 silver and gold1 treasured up for the use of many generations2 for there is the hiding of ,his power who is the bountiful ,god of ,providence4 ,but my purpose is only so far to hint at the resources of this most favored of lands1 as to make the marvellous facts a basis for the proposition that ability is one measure of our responsibility for the hearty and liberal doing of what we can for the highest development of this whole land4 ,and let us never forget that a great1 civilized and ,christian ,state is made and measured1 not by its physical resources merely1 not by its accumulated material wealth1 but chiefly by the mental and moral stature of its inhabitants4 ,the best products and the richest resources of any ,state are in its crop of men4 ,if these1 even on a sterile soil and under frowning skies1 are liberal1 large-hearted1 industrious1 patriotic and pious1 they make of the desert a paradise1 and amid the clefts of the rocks there may be rootage for great ideas4 ,if everywhere1 for a single generation1 such a populace could have and hold possession of this planet1 the old alien orb would shine so that the shortest-sighted angel could see it without a telescope1 and the inhabitants of other worlds might intelligently covet it as a dwelling-place for the society which it would afford4 ,but wealth without good society is worthless4 ,that city might be a hell upon earth in which there were no churches and schools1 though every man had a gold mine in one corner of his cellar and a diamond mine in another4 ,mexico1 with its mountains streaked with silver1 has but few attractions as the family residence of a man who cares to live out more than half his days1 or who esteems it no luxury to live among an ignorant1 bigoted and revengeful people4 ,california to-day1 with all its discovered treasures1 could not be so safe or so attractive a place of residence as it was before those discoveries1 but for the better class of enterprising1 intelligent1 honest1 law-abiding citizens1 who have come into possession of that land4 ,nor are political institutions1 however desirable1 of much practical worth1 except as they are worked by men of moral principle1 not for the selfish advantage of the few1 but for the protection and enriching of all4 ,in considering the claims of the ,american ,missionary ,association to our prayerful interest and our liberal benefactions1 these preliminary thoughts have practical force as applied to moral science2 for it is distinctively the aim of this ,association to lift society as a whole by lifting at the lower stratum4 ,its work is confessedly not with the most promising material1 out of which the most may be made in the shortest time1 but with the most degraded1 unpromising and despised of the outcast races4 ,this is the great alchemist among our charities2 seeking to transmute the baser metals into gold4 ,for the transmuting of character the mission of ,christ was a witness to the universe that the last might be first1 and that the lowest might be lifted to the highest position of honor and glory1 as the not to save the despised and outcast races who dwelt in the wilderness and in the south country4 ,do you tell me1 as an excuse for neglecting them1 that the ,indians1 instead of being the noble red men1 such as the sickly sentimental fancy of the poet and the moralist too often paint them1 are1 for the most part1 ignorant and vile1 dirty and degraded1 lazy1 mean1 treacherous and revengeful8 ,my familiarity with the better class of frontiersmen prepares me candidly to admit it all as a statement of fact4 ,but ,i draw from those facts a very different conclusion than that they are not worth saving4 ,all the more do they need to be saved4 ,i might1 without encroaching upon the regions of romance1 tell1 by the hour1 tales of horror1 as they have been related to me by reliable witnesses1 that would make the blood fairly curdle in your veins4 ,and if ,i had the gift of eloquence ,i might so vividly depict those horrors that you would find yourselves1 right here in the house of ,god1 clenching your fist and threatening vengeance upon wretches so base1 upon savages so merciless1 upon mockeries of manhood so gross and beastly4 ,but let me remind you that an intelligent ,indian might with more eloquent tongue inveigh against the crimes of those who profess to be better than savages4 ,he might truthfully speak of the perfidy of those who break the faith of treaties almost before the ink is dry in which the plausible yet one-sided contract is written4 ,he might with indignant sneer point to the great army of vagrants claiming better blood1 as filthy and vile1 as dangerous and degraded as the worst savages were ever charged with being4 ,but in saying all this he has not made out his case4 ,no criminal can make even a plausible defence in any court by the plea that he is no worse than the worst men he can find in society2 though1 somehow1 quite respectable sinners do seem to gain some comfort from this sort of scavenger's logic4 ,it is absurd to suppose that ignorant and brutal savages should be so much better than civilized men that there should not be found in every tribe1 as there are with us in every community1 a dangerous class1 selfish enough to plunder and murder those who have never wronged them1 and desperate enough to take any risk and to commit any crime4 ,it were most surprising if it were not so4 ,all the more1 then1 ,i insist upon their need of saving4 ,with all the stronger emphasis ,i urge that this nation cannot afford1 on its undefended borders1 any more than it can afford in its strong centres of population and of well organized police1 to be indifferent to the needless multiplying of such a class4 ,has our civilization much to boast of if it admits that there is no better way for forty millions of people to deal with four hundred thousand ,indians than to exterminate them8 ,if it were not true1 as it is1 that it costs more to kill them than to civilize1 convert and by moral forces control them1 what less than savages are we if we adopt the creed of the worst class of frontiersmen as the creed of the churches2 that the best thing we can do with the savage is to kill him2 and that there are no good ,indians but dead ones8 ,let us be intelligent enough to know1 and candid enough to confess1 that in estimating their possibilities of social1 industrial and moral development1 we have taken too much account of the exceptional cases in which they have made trouble1 and not enough of the many tribes that1 for long years1 have lived in peace1 grown thrifty1 maintained self-control1 cared for the education of their children1 and honored their profession of religion4 ,what this and kindred associations have successfully achieved among the ,indians alone1 entitles them to the gratitude of the nation1 and the liberal support of all who have faith in the ,christ-like work of saving the lost4 ,i have not time to speak at length of the work of the ,association among the ,asiatic immigrants upon the ,pacific coast4 ,many of you know how honestly and earnestly ,i contend that in many respects this serf population that is sweeping in upon our ,western border is a most undesirable element1 morally1 socially and politically4 ,but by as much as they are1 in the mass1 vile and degraded1 the worst sort of stuff out of which to make ,american citizens1 by so much the more are we bound not to outdo them in violence that would dishonor a savage1 and in intolerance and prejudice that is worse than heathenish4 ,here1 too1 the argument of this discourse finds its fullest illustration4 ,it is the strongest proof of the bounty of our religion that its brightest trophies are secured and its grandest victories achieved upon the most hopeless fields1 and in saving the very chief of sinners4 ,but the work of the ,association among the ,aborigines of the wilderness is as nothing to their more important mission1 and their more signal success among the colored people of the south country4 ,here is a population vastly more numerous and more dangerous if left in ignorance2 for1 wisely or unwisely1 they have been invested with the right1 and in some places they freely exercise the power to vote4 ,admit1 now1 all that may be said of the utter unfitness of the great majority of them to exercise this privilege of freemen4 ,yet since1 beyond recall1 they have the right1 and in some way must be counted as a very important factor in the forces that are to shape our destiny1 we can no more afford to let them remain in ignorance1 than we can afford to let the same class grow up in ignorance and vice among us1 with so little sense of their responsibilities1 and with so little self-respect as citizens1 that they can be bought like cattle by the highest bidder4 ,the more debased1 indolent and ignorant they are1 the greater the danger to our free institutions1 and the stronger the motive for seeking to elevate1 educate and save them4 ,they constitute more than one-tenth of our population4 ,if directly or indirectly we were accessory to the placing of so dangerous a weapon in their hands--a weapon1 as respects their own interests1 liable to kick back--we are bound to help fit them so to intelligent aim is to lift them out of their degradation by bringing them to ,christ4 ,our work among them is with no sectarian1 as it is with no partisan political purpose4 ,we propose to help make them intelligent and worthy ,christian people4 ,there our responsibility ceases4 ,as to parties and sects1 they must learn wisely to choose for themselves4 ,whatever the shading of their creed1 we do recommendation4 ,from the tenth annual report of the ,board to the ,president1 it appears that more than one-half of the ,indians have discarded the blanket and donned a civilized garb2 that about one-half have moved out of their lodges and wigwams into houses1 the number of which has increased nearly threefold in ten years2 that the number of pupils in ,indian schools has more than doubled2 that nearly one-sixth of the ,indian population can read2 that the number of acres of land cultivated by the ,indians is about five times as great as ten years ago2 that the production of wheat has increased nearly fivefold1 of oats and barley nearly fourfold1 and of hay nearly ninefold2 and that the ,indians own about three times as many horses and mules1 six times at many cattle1 seven times of many indications of a rapidly growing dissatisfaction with the present system of education in this country4 ,more and more it is coming to be the feeling that education1 in its true sense1 is not designed1 as has been thought in the past1 to fit people for 8higher positions10 but rather to fit them to make the most of life in the positions they do occupy1 and which must1 in any event1 be filled by some one4 ,to satisfy this most reasonable feeling1 more of the things that pertain to practical life must be thought and talked and taught in our schools4 ,it is no doubt a serious question as to how a safe transition can be made from the present highly artificial system to one that will have a more practical bearing on the every-day life of the masses4 ,in this case advice of a similar nature to that which ,horace ,greeley gave about resumption will prove1 at least1 the most reasonable4 ,the best and only way to make the change is to change4 ,but for the query4 ,at ,le ,moyne ,school1 where we have one almost continuous daily session from #i ,a4 ,m4 to #c ,p4 ,m41 at least an hour of this time each day must be given by the pupils to some branch of practical or industrial knowledge4 ,we cannot wait for all the desired appliances in this work1 or to have a beaten track pointed out to us4 ,we are beginning with such appliances as are at hand1 and we expect to learn from our own experience as well as from other sources2 but at any rate in time to earn success4 ,in the direct line of training nurses1 each girl in the school1 sixteen years old or over1 will devote the industrial hour1 for two days in each week1 to studies under this head1 including special lessons in anatomy1 physiology and hygiene4 ,for the present1 at least1 no text-book is to be placed in the hands of the students4 ,they are to gain their knowledge from lectures1 which are to be followed by general and familiar conversation between instructor and pupils on the same subject4 ,each girl will be required to take notes of the lecture1 and to write out what she can of the knowledge imparted4 ,after a subject is completed1 each member of the class is required to prepare an essay1 putting in of feeling among ,southern people1 both towards the ,freedmen and our work among them4 ,as the students come back from vacation service to our several institutions1 they report this advance in good-will4 ,the people are learning that ours is a philanthropic and missionary1 and not a political process1 and so their prejudice is abating4 ,it is natural that some worthy people should feel a little chagrin at the slipping of this work out of their hands2 but not a few of them are glad to see it carried on by anybody4 ,they say1 now that these people have been made citizens1 they must be made the best of citizens4 #d4 ,i find that the school work is the almost indispensable prerequisite to the church work4 ,it fixes the place4 ,it draws out the material4 ,it qualifies for church activity4 ,it is no gain to the ,kingdom for us simply to transfer the old-time church members to our system4 ,our work is to train up the youth1 to develop intelligence1 and to organize a fellowship of congenial material4 ,a judicious man of another denomination1 speaking upon this subject1 said that the ,congregationalists could afford to wait for the young2 that his church could not wait4 ,it strong minds and strong wills who say that they never can come through in that way4 ,some such have been delighted to find the quiet way of submission and faith4 ,some of the noblest natures now in our churches were of that sort4 ,happy have been the preachers and teachers who have led them in this way of peace4 #f4 ,i see a wise ,providence in the opening of 8,homes0 for our workers4 ,it was impossible to get board among the white people4 ,the ,freedmen had not the accommodations4 ,it became necessary to provide 8,homes0 which should be the property of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,they become castles of safety and abodes of comfort4 ,they also bring to bear the example and influence of home1 which is a valuable adjunct to the missionary scheme4 #g4 ,as the soldiers once took this country1 so now the women seem to be taking it over again4 ,in all our chartered institutions1 men are at work1 affording the masculine quality to the workmanship4 ,but in all these1 ladies are employed as teachers in the higher as well as in the primary departments4 ,many of the normal and high schools are under the exclusive control of ladies4 ,in the earlier conflict their sex was their protection4 ,in all the movement their patience and tact and heroism1 and their loving devotement to the good of the people1 have secured a crown of success4 ,our country will never know its debt to these patriotic ,tennessee and ,northern ,alabama1 twelve in number4 ,the churches in ,mississippi were not represented4 ,rev4 ,horace ,j4 ,taylor1 of ,athens1 ,ga41 was chosen ,moderator4 ,each evening of the about eighty members2 several of them were smitten1 but not one died4 8,the ,band of ,hope10 a society pledged to abstinence from intoxicating drinks1 tobacco and profanity1 having between two hundred and three hundred members1 lost only two members by the fever4 ,this 8,band0 was organized by ,rev4 ,e4 ,o4 ,tade some ten years since4 ,its object is to gather in and hold under strict ,new ,testament temperance principles the youth of both sexes4 ,some twelve hundred names have been enrolled upon its records4 ,its power has been felt far and wide4 ,a branch of the mother band has been organized in the city4 ,it may be safely said that through its agency ,chattanooga is more free from intemperance than any other ,southern city hereabouts4 ,its elections are less noted for rioting and drunkenness than those of the cities of ,georgia4 ,here is one result of ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 work4 ,every church should have connected closely with it a kindred organization4 ,the steadiness of this church in ,chattanooga is largely owing to the temperance principles of its members1 adopted while they were young4 99 99 99 99 99 ,bro4 ,taylor gave the ,conference an interesting description of his former mission field on the ,gilbert ,islands1 pointing out their peculiar coral formation1 the customs and character of the inhabitants1 and the success of ,christian missions among them4 99 99 99 99 99 ,prof4 ,bennett gave encouraging statements concerning ,fisk ,university4 ,prof4 ,spence is in ,scotland2 ,prof4 ,cravath at his post1 and the machinery is running smoothly4 ,the number of students is about as large as usual2 the religious interest not quite so decided as in former years4 99 99 99 99 99 ,it was voted to invite the ,congregational churches of the ,south to meet in convention at ,atlanta in ,november1 #ahhj4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,georgia4 ,atlanta ,university1 ,alumni and ,students4 ,,prof4 ,j4 ,f4 ,,fuller1 ,,atlanta4 ,this is the tenth year since the organization of this school4 ,the first class graduated from the higher normal course in #ahgc1 and the first from the college in #ahgf4 ,classes have graduated regularly from both departments each year since4 ,the alumni number #eb1 of whom1 at graduation1 #ej were professing ,christians4 ,with the exception of three who are now pursuing a higher course of study1 and one who has died since graduation1 these are all doing active work for the ,master among their own people1 and1 with others who have left school before completing the regular course of study1 are selecting and sending to the ,university the more promising of their pupils4 ,the present year shows a larger number of students in attendance and of a better class4 ,besides those already established in different parts of the ,state1 over a hundred of the students teach during the long summer vacation in the public schools1 and also engage in ,sabbath school work4 ,it is estimated that during the year #ahgh over ten thousand pupils in the ,state of ,georgia were taught by those educated at this ,university4 ,the influence of the school is commensurate with the number of its workers1 and that influence1 now very marked1 is constantly increasing4 ,the last catalogue shows #cj in the college classes1 #cg in the preparatory1 #gb in the higher normal1 and #ajd in the normal4 ,the buildings are of brick1 plain1 substantial and convenient1 but inadequate to the present and prospective needs4 ,the grounds are ample--nearly sixty acres--and beautifully located in the outskirts of the city4 99 99 99 99 99 ,revival among the ,students4 ,,rev4 ,c4 ,w4 ,,francis1 ,,atlanta4 ,you will be glad to know that at this school we are in the midst of a deep and effective work of grace1 which has already brought into the kingdom a goodly number of precious souls4 ,there has been a good degree of religious interest since the school came together in ,october1 and during the week of prayer1 which we faithfully observed1 that interest was deepened2 and since that time some have been committing themselves to ,christ's service4 ,the day of prayer for colleges1 just observed1 was an occasion of deep and solemn interest1 and a considerable number took a step forward4 ,a few extra meetings have been held2 but1 for the most part1 affairs have gone on as usual1 with no interruption of school work2 and but for the greater quiet and improved order and discipline of the school1 and increasing fidelity to duty1 an observer would not know how thorough a work was going forward4 ,our reliance has been mainly upon the truth1 earnestly and plainly presented1 rather than upon any unusual measures1 and our aim to reach the conscience1 and thus secure an intelligent and thorough submission to the claims of ,god4 ,all the members of the classes to ,christmas tree2 but ,i found so many willing hearts and ready hands eager to help1 and particularly some not members of the church1 but friendly to it1 that ,i threw all my influence in this direction to make it a success4 ,at first we planned to have it in the church2 but finding that the building used for our ,sunday services was too small1 it was removed to the court-house1 where we had ample room4 ,the church would only accommodate about one-fifth of the people who came with their children to receive the gifts1 for we had something for nearly every ,methodist and ,baptist boy and girl1 as well as every ,congregationalist in town4 ,on ,friday night1 the ladies of our church gave an entertainment to aid in defraying the expenses incurred by the burial of a member of the church who had died very suddenly4 ,he would have been buried by the town but for a few loyal and faithful brethren who revolted at any such idea1 and at once assumed the responsibility1 though there was not one cent in the treasury4 ,at the supper they cleared enough to pay the debt1 and quite a little sum in addition4 ,our polity is guarded with the same sacredness as in ,new ,england4 99 99 99 ,feb4 #ast1 #ahgi4 ,the terrible epidemic which held this city in its relentless grasp for five months and created general gloom and depression1 delayed the opening of the ,university till ,december of a fresh1 beautiful building in a central position1 and the tide of public sentiment strongly in our favor1 the new year will be a marked period in the educational interests of our ,state40 ,these brilliant expectations were changed to grave uncertainty and anxiety4 ,but ,god is with us1 and our fears are already dissipated4 ,in the first place1 the colored people were wonderfully exempt from the ravages of the fever4 ,there were instances of the fever1 but the mortality was slight4 ,the only disadvantage was the uncertainty regarding the time of opening the term1 which induced a large number to enter into other school arrangements4 ,at this writing we have in the ,academic ,department #age1 and in the ,law ,department #be4 ,new students are enrolled every week1 and we have great occasion for satisfaction and gratitude4 ,our friends will be glad to know that the new ,university building suits our needs to perfection4 ,we could hardly suggest a change in the arrangement of rooms4 ,in many respects it is a model house4 ,if our friends could understand how earnestly we desire to furnish our beautiful chapel and two additional recitation rooms1 into which we are almost ready to 8swarm10 and how we long to see a neat fence surrounding the lot1 isolating and protecting us1 situated as we are on the grand boulevard of the city1 ,i am sure that some good heart would suggest the means of accomplishing these things4 ,but this is ,god's work1 and ,he will send relief if we can only wait4 ,we shall graduate a class of six1 of whom five are young men4 ,they all have bright minds and are first-class scholars4 ,it is a real pleasure to teach them4 ,i hear them every morning in ,upham's ,mental ,philosophy1 and the most exacting teacher would ask no better recitations than are uniformly given4 ,the inducements for young men and women to qualify themselves for teachers of the highest grade are all that could be desired4 ,it is impossible now to answer the demands for competent teachers for the colored schools of ,louisiana4 ,i have received an application for a principal of a large parish school1 with a salary of #a1bjj1 and two are now in hand for lady teachers1 with salaries of #cj per month1 in a town where good board can be obtained for #g per month4 ,this demand will constantly increase both in ,louisiana and ,texas4 ,two of our last senior class are teaching in ,texas1 and receiving #ej per month4 ,when ,i returned to the church1 after an absence of more than five months1 the people greeted me with enthusiasm1 and said to me1 8,you find us a united people4 ,god has kept us together during this sad summer4 ,we are ready for work4 ,when will the revival begin80 ,i told them we should begin special meetings with the 8,week of ,prayer20 but the time for earnest labor was already at hand to prepare the people for the work of grace1 which ,i felt sure ,god had in store for us4 ,our prayer meetings were largely attended1 and ,i could see that the ,church were longing and praying for a glorious revival4 ,what a joyful duty it is to preach to such a people6 ,the 8,week of ,prayer0 came1 and with a deep feeling of dependence upon ,god we gathered for our first special meeting4 ,night after night the attendance increased4 ,christians yielded themselves to the spirit of the meetings2 the flame of religious fervor burned more brightly2 and when1 in sympathy with the ,christian world1 we had considered the topics assigned by the ,evangelical ,alliance1 we felt ready to enter upon the holy work of winning souls1 and of directing all our thoughts and energies to this object4 ,for four weeks we gathered every night1 with an attendance ranging from #hj to #aej1 seldom falling below #ajj4 ,members of other churches flocked in2 unconverted men and women heard the good news and joined the waiting throng4 ,the result has been joyful--blessed--glorious4 ,in some respects ,i have never witnessed a revival of greater spiritual power4 ,the work has been quiet as the under-current of a river1 but deep1 heart-searching and vital4 ,the number of converts has been less than in some previous revivals2 but when the position and influence of those who have been reached1 one-half of them heads of families1 is considered1 the general result is highly important4 ,a few instances will illustrate the nature of the good work4 ,during a previous revival a fair young girl was one of the joyful converts4 ,she has been a steadfast ,christian1 honoring by a consistent1 holy life her vows as a church member4 ,one year ago she was married to a young man of many attractive qualities1 and the centre of influence in a wide circle of friends4 ,during this revival not only the husband1 but the mother have found ,christ1 and to-day there is great joy in that household4 ,on the night when the mother uttered the exultant cry1 8,christ has set me free2 ,i am redeemed60 the child1 who had prayed for her husband's and her mother's conversion1 fainted from excess of joy and emotion4 ,another mother is made happy by the conversion of her son1 and expresses her joy with fast-falling tears4 ,now a student from one of the country parishes yields to conviction and takes his stand as a ,christian4 ,another1 a painter by trade1 who says he knew nothing of ,christianity before1 seeks earnestly till he finds the ,saviour4 ,we shall never forget his impassioned eloquence when he announced his conversion4 ,it was the utterance of a deep1 overwhelming joy4 ,a young man1 whose home teaching has been all wrong1 walks for days beneath the dark shadow of doubt and fear4 ,on one night he rose in meeting1 and weeping freely said1 8,why do ,i not find peace8 ,why will not ,god have mercy8 ,oh1 pray for me and help me60 ,such agony of soul cannot continue long4 ,it was the profound darkness before the dawn4 ,to-day his faith is strong and joyful4 ,there came into our meeting a wife1 in whose conversion peculiar interest was manifested4 ,listening with eager interest from the first1 she soon became intensely engaged in her own salvation4 ,near the close of one of our services she exclaimed1 so soon as her emotion would permit her to speak1 8,god1 have mercy6 ,everybody pray for me60 ,earnestly she inquired the way of life1 and after a brief but bitter struggle the light came beaming in upon her soul1 and she goes from house to house1 spreading the glad tidings and telling what great things the ,lord has done for her4 ,last year a married woman--a public school-teacher--experienced this blessed change of heart1 and the religion of ,christ has been the absorbing theme of her life since4 ,now her daughter1 an interesting girl of sixteen1 shares the faith of the mother1 who says1 8,have ,i not reason for loving ,god as ,i do80 ,one who became a ,christian years ago1 but who1 through indifference1 had lapsed from the enjoyment of the ,christian life1 has been recovered4 ,when she sought my counsel1 ,i said1 8,don't expect to be converted over again4 ,take your place as a ,christian woman1 and live as a ,christian should live40 ,the change with her has been like a new conversion4 ,the cloud has been dispelled1 and she rejoices in the restored favor of ,god4 ,on the last night of our special services fully #aej people were present4 ,i think we shall begin another special campaign the #ast of ,march4 ,pray for us that a great light may be kindled here1 which ,god will never suffer to go out4 ,oh1 the progress of this dear church these last three years6 ,their self-respect1 receipts1 of which you had made mention in a recent letter to him1 and this called forth very earnest supplication that ,god would move men's hearts to liberal giving1 so that the good work among their people might not suffer4 ,the occasion was one of unusual interest4 ,there have been two very clear and interesting cases of conversion since ,christmas1 and some among us are anxious4 ,there has not yet been so large an increase in the number of students since ,new ,years as we had expected4 ,the weather has been intensely cold and money seems to be very scarce4 ,the health of teachers and pupils is good4 ,at the ,baptist ,institute they were compelled to suspend school on ,monday because of sickness resulting from the unusual cold and exposure4 99 99 99 99 99 ,woman's ,work--,relief ,fund--,health ,matters--,cottage ,meetings--,northern ,helpers4 ,,miss ,,hattie ,a4 ,,milton1 ,,memphis4 ,the outlook seems much more encouraging this year than last1 for several reasons1 one of the most important of which is1 that the relief fund gives us access to many more families4 ,last ,sabbath five new scholars came to ,sunday-school1 all from families which had been benefited by the relief4 ,one of the boys1 eleven years old1 who belongs to a very poor family1 but who is quite a hero among his neighbors1 because of his honesty and industry1 ,i often met last year with others on the commons1 but he could not come to ,sunday-school because he was so ragged4 ,as he was very anxious to attend1 a suit of clothes was given him last week1 and ,sabbath morning he came to the church before his teacher was dressed for breakfast1 and waited patiently during the three hours until the exercises began1 enjoying his improved appearance4 ,the past few weeks have been very cold for this climate1 and many a widow with her little children has been made to rejoice as she gathered her family around the bright fire and partook of the wholesome food provided by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 relief4 ,the yellow fever made terrible havoc in many families--indeed in some none are left to tell the tale of woe6 ,for a few days1 now1 the weather has been very warm and there is much sickness1 and the death rate is very high among the colored people--in many cases1 no doubt1 resulting from want of proper attention4 ,a few days since ,i visited a man suffering with indigestion and cold2 he had called a doctor1 but was not relieved2 his wife was anxious to help him1 but knew not what to do2 so she was told to let the light in from behind1 instead of in front of the patient1 as it was very painful to his eyes1 then to apply cloths wet in hot water to the aching head and chest1 and hot bricks1 steaming with vinegar1 to his feet4 ,in half an hour he was relieved and the next day was almost well1 only needing directions about food and ventilation4 ,this is but an instance among many of those who suffer for the want of such simple remedies1 of the use of which they have no knowledge4 ,as the demand for nurses has been very great during the past year1 we propose giving some attention to this branch in our school1 which has filled up since ,christmas and is doing well4 ,the industrial department is getting in good working order4 ,i have about forty women and girls under my general supervision1 the more experienced assisting me in teaching the others to cut and make reports four evening mission schools1 one in each of the cities of ,san ,francisco1 ,oakland1 ,sacramento and ,san ,jos1 with an average attendance of #gj1 #fj1 #ce and #bd respectively4 ,four many years1 and has received to membership from its organization #ajc persons4 ,in connection with the ,sacramento ,mission1 #ba ,christian ,chinese have been received to the ,presbyterian ,church of that city2 fifteen are still members of the church1 and of these1 eight were received last year4 ,in connection with the ,san ,jos school there are seven ,christian ,chinese1 members of the ,presbyterian church of that city4 ,the ,ladies' ,foreign ,missionary ,society of the ,presbyterian church sustains in ,san ,francisco a ,home for ,chinese women1 which has now eleven inmates1 who must1 of course1 be not only taught1 but sheltered and boarded1 and1 often1 protected from the brutes in human form who claim to be their owners4 ,the total number of laborers connected with the ,presbyterian ,mission is thus seen to be fifteen4 ,the total average attendance at the schools1 #bab4 ,the total number of church members1 from the first1 is #afj1 of whom #fi have been removed by dismissal to churches in ,china1 by death1 or by the dropping of their names from the roll4 ,the total number who hear the gospel from the lips of the missionaries or native preachers cannot be for many years by the ,california ,chinese ,mission1 twenty in all have united with the ,presbyterian church in that city4 ,the ,united ,presbyterian ,church4--,this church1 also1 sustains a mission school in ,oakland1 which has an average attendance of about forty pupils4 ,the ,woman's ,union ,mission to ,chinese ,women and ,children has been in operation nearly nine years4 ,as its name indicates1 it is a union work1 and is sustained for the most part by ladies in the different churches of ,san ,francisco and ,oakland4 ,the ,society has been aided materially this last year by the ,chinese themselves1 having received a gift in money from the 8,six ,companies10 and also from the ,chinese merchants4 ,the special work of this ,mission is among ,chinese children1 and for them a day school is sustained in the second story of the old 8,globe ,hotel10 at the corner of ,dupont and ,jackson streets4 ,with this special work is also combined visitation among ,chinese families4 ,the number of scholars on the roll the past year is fifty-two4 ,thirty-two of these are boys and twenty girls4 ,there are two teachers employed1 an ,english teacher and a teacher of ,chinese4 ,the running expenses of this ,society are about eighty-five dollars a month4 ,if1 now1 ,i add to this statement the following statistics touching our own ,congregational ,mission1 the exhibit of missionary work among the ,chinese in ,california will be complete4 ,we maintain #aa schools3 at ,oakland1 ,petaluma1 ,sacramento2 in ,san ,francisco1 the ,central1 ,barnes and ,bethany2 ,san ,leandro1 ,santa was the custom of the former missionaries to give the laborers each a ,christmas present1 and they are not a people who forget very soon any favor shown them by the former missionaries4 ,this present consisted of two goats and two bushels of rice1 which was divided among them4 ,i watched with pleasure their happy faces as each one received his portion4 ,at ten o'clock the first bell rang for services1 and at the ringing of the second bell the chapel was filled to its utmost capacity with the heathen1 who came from miles around to hear and learn of ,jesus1 and why we celebrate this eventful day4 ,there were so many present that we were obliged to bring in extra seats4 ,they gave very good attention and seemed to drink in the truths of ,jesus ,christ as they were given them4 ,it would have been encouraging to you could you have seen them when they were told that this dear ,saviour whom we celebrate is a ,god who hears in ,mendi1 ,sherbro1 ,timony and all other languages1 and if they come to ,him with pure and contrite hearts ,he will wash away their sins and make them white in the blood of the ,lamb4 ,from their cheerful countenances one could read that their happy hearts sung forth praises to ,god4 ,i am1 as you may know1 a lover of singing1 so we selected some of the most beautiful and appropriate hymns for the occasion4 ,as we sung1 ,i1 like the heathen1 could but exclaim praise to ,god in the highest4 ,surely ,africa will be redeemed from the curse of ignorance and sin1 and her sons and daughters learn to bow in reverence to the true and living ,god4 ,after service1 ,mr4 ,jackson and ,i prepared a dinner1 to which we invited the chiefs of the ,bargroo river4 ,they seemed to enjoy themselves very much indeed4 ,the dinner consisted1 as nearly as possible1 of their country dishes and a plenty of pure cold water4 ,having a country cook1 the dishes were all served up in regular country style4 ,we had our interpreter to dine with them1 so that we might be able to converse with them on the meaning of ,christmas day and how they should celebrate it4 ,we are greatly encouraged to go forward in the work4 ,it is true that it is a hard and tedious one1 but when we lean on ,jesus it is made light4 ,you would1 perhaps1 be pleased to know of some of our encouragements4 ,there is an unusual amount of interest manifested on the part of the natives in religion4 ,they take hold of the truths imparted to them as if their souls were thirsty for the living bread of heaven4 ,they are also gradually laying aside their country fashions1 such as gregrees1
