8,enclosed please find draft for #cjj for work among the ,freedmen in the ,south4 ,i notice in the ,,missionary that you need an increase of #bj per cent4 over last year's contribution4 ,i have increased mine #cc per cent4 ,if all felt the interest ,i do in this work1 and would give in like proportion1 there would soon be a school-house in every neighborhood4 ,it seems to me that the life of our nation depends upon the education of these people4 ,however much ,i desire that the ,gospel shall be sent to ,africa1 for a few years longer1 it seems to me1 our efforts should be directed mostly to the ,south4 ,all reports from the work are encouraging40 99 99 99 99 99 ,in the ,state ,courts of ,fulton ,county1 ,ga41 of which ,atlanta is the seat1 no colored jurors have ever been empanelled2 but the commissioners have recently placed upon the jury list about twenty of the most intelligent colored men1 and it is hoped that some of them will be drawn at the next term of court1 and thus another advance in the right direction be made by the ,empire ,state of the ,south4 ,for several years the ,united ,states court held in ,atlanta has had a 8mixed0 jury1 and no serious evil has resulted4 99 99 99 99 99 ,our readers will anticipate with much interest a new book by ,judge ,tourgee--8,bricks ,without ,straw0--which is announced for ,september4 ,it deals with the problem of negro education1 and is by one who has made it a profound study4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the public sentiment of ,virginia1 in regard to free schools1 as gathered from the reports of the county superintendents1 may be summed up in the language of one of them as follows3 8,i might content myself by saying that most of the educated in my county are now decided advocates of the present system4 ,at first1 a large majority were hostile to it2 but a few days ago1 one of the first men of the county said to me that he tried hard to believe it a #8,yankee innovation' upon our good old ,virginia plan1 and as such it should be opposed by all true ,virginians2 but now he had become a decided advocate of it1 and believed that the only hope of educating a large majority of our citizens1 indeed1 that our very existence1 as a free and independent people1 depended upon the preservation and extension of some good system of popular education40 ,an examination of one hundred and three such reports discovers the fact that in less than a dozen counties is there any very great opposition to the system4 ,the reports show an almost uniform and decided growth of public sentiment in favor of it4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,correspondent of the ,new ,orleans ,times draws a discouraging picture of public school prospects in that city and ,state1 and an editorial in the same issue adds3 8,it is1 indeed1 true1 that our schools are in a very sad condition4 ,what is more to be regretted is that the prospect of their improvement is by no means encouraging4 ,once we took pride in them1 and gloried in the advantages which they offered to our children for obtaining an education4 ,that pride appears to exist no longer4 ,there is a sort of apathy about the schools1 which justifies the inference that they have not the hold on popular favor that they once had4 99 99 99 ,if there were a prospect of a better condition of affairs next year1 there would be1 perhaps1 no immediate occasion for discouraging forebodings4 ,but there is not2 there is no reason for believing that the provisions for the maintenance of the schools next year will be more ample than they are this year4 ,there is one thing very certain1 and that is that if we are to have efficient public schools in this city1 the money to support them must be forthcoming40 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,negro ,bishop of ,hayti1 ,theodore ,holey1 a native of the ,united ,states1 and consecrated in ,grace ,church1 ,new ,york ,city1 who1 during the recent gathering of the ,bishops of the ,anglican ,church in ,london1 was much honored by all his brethren1 and who at the invitation of ,dean ,stanley preached in ,westminster ,abbey1 on ,st4 ,james ,day1 closed his address with the following eloquent words and remarkable prayer3 8,and now1 on the shores of old ,england1 the cradle of that ,anglo-,saxon ,christianity by which ,i have been in part at least illuminated2 standing beneath the vaulted roof of this monumental pile1 redolent with the piety of by-gone generations during so many ages2 in the presence of the #8,storied urn and animated bust' that hold the sacred ashes and commemorate the buried grandeur of so many illustrious personages--,i catch a fresh inspiration and new impulse of the ,divine missionary spirit of our common ,christianity2 and here in the presence of ,god1 of angels1 and of men1 on this day sacred to the memory of an apostle whose blessed name was called over me at my baptism1 and as ,i lift up my voice for the first1 and perhaps only1 time in any of ,england's sainted shrines1 ,i dedicate myself anew to the work of ,god1 of the ,gospel of ,christ1 and of the salvation of my fellow-men in the far distant isle of the ,caribbean ,sea1 that has become the chosen field of my ,gospel labors4 8,o ,thou ,saviour ,christ1 ,son of the living ,god1 who when ,thou wast spurned by the ,jews of the race of ,shem1 and who1 when delivered up without cause by the ,romans of the race of ,japheth1 on the day of ,thy crucifixion1 hadst ,thy ponderous cross borne to ,golgotha's summit on the stalwart shoulders of ,simon1 the ,cyrenian1 of the race of ,ham2 ,i pray ,thee1 ,o precious ,saviour1 remember that forlorn1 despised1 and rejected race1 whose son thus bore ,thy cross1 when ,thou shalt come in the power and majesty of ,thy eternal kingdom to distribute ,thy crowns of everlasting glory6 8,and give to me1 then1 not a place at ,thy right hand or at ,thy left1 but only the place of a gatekeeper at the entrance of the ,holy ,city1 the new ,jerusalem1 that ,i may behold my redeemed brethren1 the saved of the ,lord1 entering therein to be partakers with ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob of all the joys of ,thy glorious and everlasting kingdom40 99 99 99 99 99 ,negro prejudice against negroes is likely to yield slowly1 and will do so only for good reasons4 ,the prejudices of the whites have so far given way that ,atlanta has had its negro juror1 who promptly joined in convicting a negro who was put on trial4 ,but the next prisoner1 who was also a negro1 charged with murder1 strenuously objected to having one of his own race on the jury4 ,there was another such case in ,virginia some time ago1 when a colored prisoner made the same objection1 on the ground that 8niggers would hang a nigger just to see him kick40 ,so against this we note the fact1 that the ,court of ,appeals in ,kentucky recently quashed an indictment against a negro1 on the ground that the grand jury was composed entirely of white men1 and that the law excluding all persons other than white men from serving on juries is unconstitutional4 99 99 99 99 99 ,negro ,teachers4--,the author of 8,other ,fools1 and ,their ,doings10 pays this somewhat rhetorical1 but just tribute to the noble women who went forth to add value to the freedom1 which1 under stress of military necessity1 the nation had given to the negro slave--a tribute which will appear more just as the history of our noble workers becomes better known3 8,while from thousands of homes brave men came with flaunting flags1 and beating drums1 and booming cannons1 singing as they marched1 #8,we are coming1 ,father ,abraham1 ,three hundred thousand more1' from out those same homes stole a procession of women1 not clandestinely1 not timidly1 but brave of soul and strong of heart and inflexible of purpose1 though without ostentation4 ,the ,bible and spelling-book were their only weapons1 and their song was of #8the mercies of the ,lord forever1' and their #8trust under the feathers of his wings6' #8,neither the terror by night1' #8the arrow by day1' #8the pestilence in darkness1' nor #8destruction at noon1' nor the #8thousands falling on their right hand1 and on their left1' could make them afraid2 #8because they had made the ,lord their strength1 even the ,most ,high their refuge4' ,they went forth to #8tread upon the lion and the adder1 the young lion and the dragon4' ,scorn1 insult1 slander1 poverty1 loneliness1 sickness and death1 they trampled under their feet2 for #8through the work of the ,lord were they made glad1' and they #8triumphed in the work of ,his hands4' 8,away on in the ,elysian fields of ,heaven1 when the cycles of eternity shall have encircled the universe1 and rolled back upon their track in such repeated and intricate mazes as only the ,infinite mind can trace1 they shall receive from the lips of the ransomed of all nations1 #8the blessing of those once ready to perish2' and the blessed assurance that the torch they lit in the ,freedman's hut1 lit a beacon that illumined the world4 8,if the ,south is saved to civilization1 its chief human ,saviour was #8the nigger school-teacher4'0 99 99 99 99 99 ,capt4 ,payne1 who was ejected from the ,indian ,territory1 which he invaded last spring in defiance of the ,president's proclamation1 again defies the ,government and the ,courts1 and has gone to the ,territory with a company of men4 ,parties in ,st4 ,louis have purchased machinery and various kinds of goods for his colony1 and the issue is made most unequivocally with the ,administration4 ,we anxiously await the action of ,president ,hayes4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,poncas1 of whose wrongs we spoke in the last number of the ,,missionary1 failing to receive justice at the hands of ,congress1 have commenced a suit to recover possession of their houses and lands now held by the ,sioux1 to whom the ,general ,government has ceded them4 ,the plaintiffs rely upon the fact that the ,constitution of the ,united ,states makes a treaty a part of the supreme law of the land1 and also extends the judicial power of the ,government to all cases in law and equity arising under treaties2 and they have in their favor established precedents by the courts for applying to the treaties with themselves this provision of the constitution4 ,judge ,dundy has decided that an ,indian is a person within the meaning of the laws1 and1 therefore1 discharged from the custody of ,gen4 ,crook the ,poncas whom he held for the purpose of forcibly returning them to the ,indian ,territory from which they had escaped4 ,thus it is decided that they may have the question judicially tested in the ,federal courts whether they have been illegally restrained of liberty4 ,this suit is to determine whether they may have not only their liberty1 but their homes which have been forcibly taken from them in violation of solemn treaties4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,encouraging ,,signs ,,of ,,the ,,times4 7,from the ,fisk ,expositor47 ,few things can be more gratifying and cheering to those engaged in the grand work of educating the colored people in ,tennessee1 than the fact that those having charge of educational affairs in the various towns1 named below1 either have1 within the past few years1 organized graded schools for colored youth1 or are now taking steps for organizing such schools3 ,clarksville1 ,trenton1 ,shelbyville1 ,brownsville1 ,jackson1 ,union ,city1 ,bolivar1 ,paris1 ,covington1 ,pulaski1 ,columbia1 ,fayetteville1 ,mason ,station1 and perhaps some other towns4 ,another thing that all who are engaged in the educational work in the ,state1 ought to regard as a hopeful sign1 is the fact that the last ,legislature1 in all its zeal for retrenchment1 made no effort to reduce the income of the free school system4 ,this1 and the fact1 that much complaint was uttered by the people all over the ,state1 because of the suspension of schools consequent upon the postponement of the collection of taxes by the ,legislature1 show how deeply the system of the ,state has taken hold upon the affections of the masses4 ,still another ground for hopefulness is found in the fact1 that1 whereas1 year before last1 not quite #ci per cent4 of the colored children of the ,state were enrolled in the free schools1 last year nearly #di per cent4 were so enrolled4 ,and there are reasons for believing that the superintendent's forthcoming report will show equally encouraging figures4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,help ,,without ,,money4 ,the ,rev4 ,h4 ,e4 ,brown1 of whose evangelistic work under the auspices of the ,y4 ,m4 ,c4 ,a4 of the ,south1 and among the colored churches of the ,south1 we have spoken1 makes at once a suggestion and an appeal which must strike every one as exceedingly practical1 common sense and valuable4 ,his letter which is given below will explain itself4 ,we urge1 most earnestly1 upon the ,christian scholars of the ,north this opportunity1 without cost of money1 and with but little expenditure of time1 for doing a most valuable work for the colored people4 ,if men of acknowledged authority in their several departments of science and art would furnish such articles as are asked for1 the result must prove highly beneficial to these people who so much need1 and are so eagerly seeking1 knowledge in regard to practical matters on which depends largely their welfare4 ,the physician1 the lawyer1 the farmer1 the political economist1 the scientist1 all these might with great profit to these people respond to this call4 ,we trust that the mere suggestion of ,mr4 ,brown will prove sufficient to call forth abundant answer3 8,,lansing1 ,,mich41 ,july1 #ahhj4 8,,dear ,,sir3 ,an opportunity is now presented for leading scholars to afford substantial help toward the solution of the colored problem of our country4 ,colored editors of ten papers1 chiefly for colored people1 published in ,washington1 ,charleston1 ,raleigh1 ,new ,orleans1 ,st4 ,louis1 and other ,southern cities1 request for publication a series of scientific articles1 of about a column's length1 say a thousand words1 such as would be1 at once1 helpful to ministers1 teachers and students1 and would stimulate future inquiries among all classes4 ,i am aware that the preparation of such articles will cost valuable time which can scarcely be spared from pressing duties2 but the promise of benefit to the colored race is so great in the elevation of tone of their papers1 and in anticipating so-called infidel science1 that ,i take the liberty to ask you to prepare1 and send me1 one or more such articles1 that ,i may copygraph1 and forward1 gratis1 to the several editors who desire them4 8,yours truly1 8,,henry ,e4 ,,brown1 ,secretary 8for ,international ,committee of ,col4 ,dep't41 8,y4 ,m4 ,c4 ,a40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,two ,,parties ,,and ,,the ,,chinese4 ,ah ,sin does not vote even once2 ,patrick ,o',flannigan does as often as that1 and is capable of doing even better if occasion should require4 ,ah ,sin is1 therefore1 exposed to such kicks as ,patrick may ask for at the hands1 or rather the feet1 of the politicians1 while both parties vie with each other in throwing to ,patrick such sops as may conciliate his good will4 ,under ,democratic ,government1 a class which has neither chains upon1 nor ballots in its hands1 is an anomaly impossible to harmonize with its surroundings1 as it is also defenceless against the assaults of its enemies2 it has neither weapons for its own protection nor a reward to offer for that of others4 ,what ,pat1 who votes1 may ask for as against ,ah ,sin1 who does not1 the average politician is ready to promise1 even when constitutionally prohibited from granting4 ,and this promise has been made1 it is humiliating to confess1 not simply by sand-lot demagogues1 but by aspirants for the highest offices under our ,government4 ,the arrival on our ,western coast1 and the presence in our land1 of less than a hundred thousand ,chinamen is gravely spoken of as a fearful inundation which in some way must be arrested2 but the tide that flows steadily in upon our ,eastern coast from ,ireland and other countries1 is regarded as a blessing rather than a danger4 ,if we seek for an explanation of this difference1 it will be found to be at bottom simply this3 ,patrick does not like ,ah ,sin's frugal1 industrious1 economical habits1 which enable him to live and labor cheaply2 so he nourishes his ballot over the head of the politician1 and his shillalah over that of ,ah ,sin1 and says that he must go1 while all seekers for office either echo the demand1 or more mildly assert that his coming must be regulated4 ,a candid examination of the testimony taken by the ,committee of the ,united ,states ,house of ,representatives last year in ,california1 will leave the impression that the ,chinese characteristics which give most offense to the sand-lotters1 whose voice both great national parties have heard1 and to which they have also made responses which ought to mantle our cheeks with shame1 are just the ones above mentioned4 ,such men as the ,mayor of ,san ,francisco1 indeed1 complain that ,china ,town is not much like ,beacon ,hill in beauty or cleanliness2 that there are women among these people not so pure as they ought to be2 that many of the men lie quietly in opium dens under the influence of that subtle drug instead of assisting1 under the stimulus of whiskey1 at primary meetings and at the polls1 as good politicians should4 ,charges to this effect are made1 but the evidence taken shows that the real ground of complaint is that the ,chinaman is sober1 industrious1 reliable1 and likely to be preferred as a laborer to ,patrick and ,bridget4 ,that the necessaries and comforts of life are to be bought1 by those who need them1 more cheaply in a market supplied with ,chinese labor1 is not deemed worthy of consideration2 the great fact which demands attention is that ,patrick must forego his numerous holidays1 his whiskey1 and his devotion to politics2 must settle down to1 and accomplish1 a vast amount of honest and skillful labor1 if he shall successfully compete with the ,chinese1 which is an evil the two political parties must promise to abate as the condition of having his support at the polls4 ,the fact comes back upon us that the ballot is necessary1 under our ,government1 for the defence of every class of citizens2 and the education of the voter is a necessary defence of the ,government against the ignorance of the ballot4 ,neither the wisdom nor the virtue of the statesman can be relied upon1 for he everywhere becomes a demagogue1 if demagogy continues to be the road to office1 as it is everywhere among ignorant voters4 ,our salvation must be found1 not in the virtue of the statesmen1 but in the intelligence and virtue of the people4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,indians1 ,,reservations ,,and ,,railroads4 ,there are in all one hundred and twenty ,indian reservations scattered over the country1 chiefly west of the ,mississippi ,river1 aggregating more than one square mile of land to each man1 woman and child of the #beb1hig ,indians1 exclusive of those in ,alaska1 which compose our ,indian population4 ,this is equivalent to giving three times the area of ,new ,york ,state to one-half the population of ,brooklyn2 only these people do not hold this land in severalty1 and1 therefore1 are tempted by its abundance to roam over it as hunters1 and are discouraged from building on it and cultivating it as owners because of the uncertain tenure by which it is held4 ,that there has been such a decided tendency toward civilized life1 under all such discouragements1 as is shown by the last ,report of the ,indian ,commissioners1 is most encouraging4 ,the five tribes longest settled in the ,indian ,territory1 now called civilized1 number about #fj1jjj souls4 ,more than half of these can read4 ,all wear citizens' dress4 ,they have a school-house for every #cab1 and a church-building for every #deh inhabitants4 ,during the past year1 they cultivated more than #bb acres of land for each family of five persons1 raised more than #bfc bushels of grain and vegetables1 and owned five and one-sixth horses or mules for each family4 ,this favorable showing would appear even more encouraging from a full exhibit of all the statistics given in this ,report1 to which our readers are referred4 ,the showing for the other tribes is fully as encouraging1 when it is remembered that their circumstances have been much less favorable4 ,in fact1 it appears evident that the progress of these people has been great just in proportion to their opportunities2 that what is lacking is not susceptibility to civilized life1 but opportunity for adopting it1 which we have denied them4 ,give the ,indian the chance1 and he will become a civilized and valuable citizen4 ,about #gg1jjj among the remaining tribes wear citizens' clothes and own more than #aa1jjj houses1 #a1bab of which have been built during the past year4 ,eleven thousand and eighty-one can read1 and #a1gag have learned the art within the same time4 ,it is significant that the five tribes above mentioned expended #aef1hef of tribal funds for schools1 while the ,government added #c1ejj for this purpose4 ,among the other tribes1 #ac1jdc of tribal funds were raised for schools1 and the ,government appropriated #afd1gjb4 ,that is to say1 these five tribes numbering #fj1jjj raised1 in round numbers1 twelve times as much for schools as all the other tribes1 and only #ab1jjj less than the ,government appropriated to all the others for school purposes2 and the ,government expended more than forty-seven times as much upon the other tribes as it did upon these five4 ,this would seem to indicate1 even to an average ,congressman1 that the cheaper policy would be to give the ,indian a chance to take care of himself4 ,aside from the discouragements to a civilized life furnished by the amount of land occupied by the ,indian1 and by the kind of title he has to it1 it should be remembered that much of this land is valuable and presents a strong temptation to the white man's greed1 and that it lies1 often1 in the direct line of advancing civilization1 an almost insurmountable barrier to its progress4 ,we cannot reasonably be expected to double the length of our railroad lines1 simply to build them around lands which ought to be opened up by them4 ,the ,north-western and ,milwaukee railroads1 in their westerly march1 have nearly reached the ,sioux reservations4 ,these cannot be entered except by force1 or with the full consent of this tribe4 ,the right of eminent domain1 under treaty with our ,government1 belongs to it1 not to us2 to the individual members of the tribe1 and must be surrendered with each one's consent1 or not at all4 ,these roads are not willing to pay what is demanded for the right of way1 and are preparing to enter without permission4 ,the probable result will be this3 the roads will enter2 the ,indians will resist2 the army will be sent in to punish them for murder2 and after a war that will cost many lives and millions of money1 the roads will be built1 and the remnant of ,indians forced into some other reservation4 ,of course1 we cannot allow this people to throw a barrier across the ,continent2 the road must be built4 ,the fact is1 the whole policy of treating these people otherwise than as citizens who are to be fitted for the privileges1 and from whom are to be exacted the duties1 of good citizens1 is foolish1 wicked1 costly and suicidal4 ,is it not time for the good common sense--we say nothing of the humanity--of the ,american people to declare that this shall be done now2 that the rights of these people shall be wisely and righteously adjusted to both our and their highest interests8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,better ,,homes ,,for ,,the ,,colored ,,people4 ,that the subject of village improvement was discussed in some of the essays presented at the closing exercises of the ,hampton ,school last ,may is due1 doubtless1 to the fact that some of the teachers came from ,stockbridge1 ,mass41 and belong to the ,laurel ,hill ,association1 rather than to any spontaneous ideas on the part of the students themselves4 ,the idea of village improvement comes as a development and outgrowth of such a degree of home improvement as is yet unknown1 not alone to the negroes1 but to the vast majority of the ,southern whites4 ,not until the log hut has been supplanted by something better1 and the idea of improvement has put in floors and windows1 has built a chimney and yard fence1 has planted some trees and flowers about the house1 can it be expected that much interest will be taken in public streets and cemeteries2 neither can much be hoped for in the elevation and refinement of the people4 ,man is so far a chameleon that he takes his color largely from his habitat1 and the observant traveler through the ,south is slow to believe that much has been1 or can be1 done for the culture of the negro so long as he vegetates1 rather than lives1 in the miserable shanties1 devoid alike of beauty and comfort1 about which flocks of children like so many crows1 or scarecrows1 are roosting4 ,from such homes our pupils come1 and back to such they return4 ,it has been despairingly said that the cultivated ,indian gradually1 but almost inevitably1 sinks back to the level of the home-life by which he is surrounded2 rarely has he strength to lift others to his isolated level4 ,this is deplorable1 but not surprising4 ,it requires a vast amount of moral heroism to stand out against the universal customs of one's people4 ,it requires more than the strength of one or two men or women to lift up a whole tribe1 and except for an evident and wide-spread desire among the ,indians to better their condition and change their modes of life1 but little could be hoped for from the experiments now being made at ,hampton and ,carlisle2 neither can we doubt that much of the culture received in our schools for the negroes will be lost1 or serve only to quicken a sense of degradation1 unless special efforts are made to counteract the inevitable tendencies of surroundings when these pupils return to their homes4 ,educational effort should be largely directed to a practical knowledge of bettering these homes1 and to the kindling of a desire to do so4 ,historically and1 perhaps1 philosophically1 dress seems to have been developed from ornament4 ,all savages strut in paint1 feathers1 and skins1 intended to set off their charms of person1 long before either decency or comfort suggests clothing2 and among the colored girls of the ,south1 pains should be taken to develop a womanly pride which will be ashamed of a bare and squalid hut1 a pride which1 without care1 will prove to be mere vanity1 delighting in gaudy dress and brilliant pinchbeck4 ,in its present stage of development the ,south is the ,eldorado of the cheap jewelry peddler1 and many a youth1 who can without shame sleep on straw1 live on corn and get along without shoes1 is miserable for lack of a brass ring and pin4 ,dress for comfort and not as mere ornament1 soap1 towels1 beds1 regulated ventilation1 the conditions and concomitants of true culture1 these belong to a distinct epoch from that earlier and lower one characterized by love of display4 ,the wise1 ,christian culture of our schools is intended to reduce this evil1 to which the negro is specially inclined1 to the least possible dimensions4 ,we aim to make earnest1 practical men and women1 who shall value all they can acquire either of knowledge or of money1 not in its relation to personal aggrandizement1 but for its power to lift their homes1 families and people out of their present degradation4 ,but the work of the teacher needs to be supplemented by other saving influences4 ,in no other way could the ,southern ,states do so much for the elevation of intelligence and virtue of its poorer classes1 white and black1 as by inducing them to build for themselves better homes4 ,in more northerly latitudes1 climate compels the erection of houses that are at least well made1 and excellence in one particular suggests and gradually secures it in others2 but where a hut1 floorless and windowless1 proves sufficient1 nothing better is suggested1 and life sustained on that level rises to no higher plane except under special1 extraneous provocatives4 ,in the present impoverished condition of these ,states1 and comparative indifference of the better to the degraded condition of the lower classes1 nothing can be expected from them1 and the suggestion is made to philanthropists who are seeking the welfare of the colored people1 whether something might not be done by offering premiums for the erection of homes1 and by furnishing1 in some way1 plans and suggestions which would be helpful to them4 ,in some ,states1 the negroes have1 with good results1 instituted agricultural fairs1 and have thus stimulated each other to helpful rivalries4 ,cannot something be done by the offer1 through these organizations1 of suitable premiums for cheap1 but suitable1 homes8 ,christianity ought1 in this #ahhjth year of our ,lord1 to be more than a 8voice crying in the wilderness20 more than ,john clad in skins and living on locusts and wild honey4 ,she ought to go forth clad in her beautiful garments4 ,during these two centuries she has ripened much fruit which the world knows is good2 she has developed much power of which the world feels its need1 and it should not go to the nations and tribes of the earth empty handed1 only to utter1 as at first1 the glad tidings which she was commissioned to proclaim4 ,she should march forth in the greatness of her strength and magnificence of her beauty1 panoplied in power and garlanded with her victories1 commending herself to man by what she has gained for him4 ,other avenues have been opened for approach--other than through his hopes and fears for the future life2 substantial gains have been achieved for that which now is1 and these should be made the allies of ,christ and the instruments of the ,church4 ,it has taken centuries to build a ,christian home1 the mightiest ally of the ,church2 let the ,church take it with her along with the school1 and not suffer the filth1 and discomfort1 and degrading influences of the old hut to hang as a millstone about the neck of those she would save4 ,of man's home here1 no less than of the heavenly1 8the ,lamb should be the light20 his surroundings1 person1 intellect1 every part of him and every interest pertaining to him1 should be acted upon by the accumulated influences1 and appealed to by the developed advantages and benefits of ,christianity4 ,if by some means the log cabins of the negroes can be supplanted by neat and healthful cottages--surrounded by gardens and shaded yards--more than threefold efficiency will be added to the efforts we are making through the schools and churches4 ,send back our pupils from the refining influences of our boarding-schools into the dirt and squalor and ugliness of these cabins1 and a large per cent4 of our work will be lost4 ,attention to the subject1 immediate and earnest1 is demanded by all the interests we seek1 and it is hoped that some one competent to deal with it will give it thought1 and suggest some practical way of securing so desirable an end4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,growth ,,of ,,ideas ,,among ,,the ,,negroes ,,and ,,indians4 ,,rev4 ,,addison ,p4 ,,foster1 ,,jersey ,,city1 ,n4 ,j4 ,it is a truism to say that the welfare of our country depends on the ideas which are prevalent4 ,no inquiry1 then1 can be more helpful in determining our condition as a nation than that which relates to the progress of ideas among these classes which give us most anxiety4 ,the ,freedmen and the ,indians are not the worst classes among us1 but they have been the most ignorant1 and every patriot is desirous of knowing their present mental condition4 ,a recent visit to the ,normal ,institute at ,hampton1 ,va41 on the occasion of its graduating exercises1 gave your correspondent1 as he listened to the addresses of the students and conversed with different colored people1 an opportunity to collect facts which1 though not decisive1 are at least suggestive on this point4 ,undoubtedly1 these ideas came largely through the influence of ,hampton ,institute1 but it must be remembered that similar institutions of the ,american ,missionary ,association and other boards are scattered throughout the ,south1 and that1 through their educated students1 these ideas are diffused far and wide among the colored people4 ,as to work1 the colored man long since learned the ,divine law1 that if he would not work1 neither should he eat4 ,one could not sit for an hour on the wharf at ,norfolk1 as we did lately1 and watch the colored men about the sloops and lighters and on the docks1 without being impressed by the fact that they had learned to work4 ,the same lesson is just now being diligently conned by the ,indians4 ,carl ,schurz1 in his speech at ,hampton1 declared that the ,indians were discovering that they must work or starve1 that hunting would no longer support them1 and that the land must be cultivated for food4 ,a similar truth was uttered by 8,bear's ,heart10 an ,indian youth1 who made an interesting address in broken ,english on the same occasion4 ,said he3 8,before ,i come here1 ,i play2 my mother and sisters work4 ,when ,i go back1 my mother and sisters do housework3 ,i dig the ground0--a purpose which was loudly applauded4 ,an amusing story is told of a certain great ,general who is supposed to sympathize with the barbarous sentiment1 8,the only good ,indian is a dead ,indian40 ,driving out from ,fortress ,monroe to examine the progress of the ,indians at ,hampton1 he was inveighing against them1 and declaring vehemently that they could not be taught to work1 when he cast his eyes on a field belonging to the ,institution1 and there were ten ,indian boys vigorously hoeing corn4 ,as to property1 the desire is coming to be very strong among both ,indian and colored for the possession of land4 ,it is well known that many ,indians on ,western reservations are seeking an ownership of land in severalty4 ,a similar desire has long stimulated the colored man4 ,we had the honor of talking with a man of unmixed negro blood1 who owns in fee simple1 about twenty miles from ,norfolk1 a good farm of #aga acres4 ,he and a friend purchased together an estate of #cdb acres of woodland1 paying #a1cjj for it4 ,he took one-half1 paid in cash #bjj1 which he had saved up during the war1 and the remainder in three years4 ,he has since fairly stocked his farm1 built him a little house1 comfortably fed his family off his farm1 and secured about a hundred dollars a year in cash4 ,when we met him1 he was on the way to ,hampton to see his son graduate with valedictory honors4 ,geo4 ,sykes1 of ,lake ,drummond1 ,va41 is a man whose name deserves to go on record4 ,mr4 ,sykes affirms that eight years ago he was the first colored man in his township who owned land4 ,now twenty-five own from five to thirty acres each1 and have their deeds without encumbrance1 while twenty-five others have bought land and are paying for it4 ,as to self-help1 we heard the most encouraging words from speakers on graduation day4 8,we must stand on our own feet10 said one speaker1 8and must not trust alone to missionary societies or ,state or individual aid40 8,no talk10 he added1 8will make me equal to other men1 but ,i must equal them1 if at all1 by my own exertions40 ,a striking instance of self-help is more conclusive testimony4 ,we conversed with a certain young ,hampton graduate who gave us a remarkable history4 ,he was an orphan4 ,after saving up #abe by farm work1 he went to ,hampton for study1 receiving no aid1 and working summers4 ,at the end of two years1 he found he had not more than forty dollars left1 so he went to teaching4 ,but he was paid only in orders on the ,state ,treasury1 which he could not get cashed except at a discount of generally twenty per cent4 ,with business wisdom1 he secured a living by farm-work in summer1 saved up his orders on the ,treasury1 till at the end of three years the ,state cashed them in full1 and then he went back and graduated4 ,not even ,dr4 ,goodell1 of missionary fame1 carrying his trunk on his back to ,andover for the sake of an education1 showed more heroism than this colored boy4 ,the colored people's desire for education has long been known1 and the incident just related well illustrates it4 ,the same spirit appears in the support of the 8,butler ,school10 situated on the grounds of the ,institute1 and taught by its graduates4 ,the ,state of ,virginia furnishes funds to keep this school open only five months2 but the parents of the children1 finding employment in a canning establishment on the ,institution's property1 gladly pay ten cents a week for each child from their slender wages1 and so keep the school open the rest of the year4 ,as to responsibilities1 the colored students recognize their duties as leaders of their people4 ,some of them who would gladly be teachers have found that orders on the ,state ,treasury1 subject to ten or twenty per cent4 discount for cash1 are not very remunerative1 and are looking in other directions for employment4 ,undoubtedly1 as skillful farmers and successful merchants1 no less than as teachers1 they can elevate their people4 ,but at ,hampton1 a stalwart black man1 in a post-graduate address1 gave the students a ringing exhortation not to desert1 because of its hardships1 the vocation of a teacher1 8which10 said he1 turning to ,president ,hayes1 who sat before him1 8is a nobler position than even that of ,president of the ,united ,states40 ,the responsibilities of the negro for village improvements in the ,south and for the evangelization of ,africa were points dwelt upon by other speakers4 ,we listened with peculiar interest to references made in the graduating addresses to the relation of the colored man to other races4 ,it was pleasing to see the kind and forgiving spirit manifested4 ,no bitterness was shown either publicly or privately because colored teachers had failed to secure their pay4 ,an interesting essay on 8,the ,advantage of ,disadvantages0 referred to their ill-treatment in the past1 with no word of reproach4 ,one speaker advanced the sentiment that the colored man need not feel specially troubled at his past deprivation of political privileges2 that it was better for him not to have much influence in government until he had become fitted to exercise that influence wisely4 ,other like utterances were made1 full of patience1 modesty1 loyalty1 hopefulness and a worthy ambition4 ,as to religion1 everything is most encouraging4 ,we attended a revival meeting in a neighboring church1 which was conducted with great decorum and genuine feeling1 entirely different from the wild hurly-burly of war times4 ,the students of the ,institute are carefully trained in religious truths1 and it is seldom that a graduate goes out who is not a sincere ,christian4 ,the spirit of the anniversary exercises was that of a deep1 but unostentatious piety4 ,the same influence is exerted among the ,indians4 ,we were told a touching story of 8,walking ,cloud10 an ,indian boy whom nothing could move from his stolidity and his unwillingness to put away the badges of his barbarism--his blanket and long hair--till the chaplain of the ,institution showed him a picture of ,christ on the cross and explained its meaning4 ,this boy1 soon afterward taken sick and dying1 gave expression in the peculiar metaphoric speech of his race to his desire to live a ,christian life4 ,we are abundantly satisfied that these noble institutions through the ,south1 of which ,hampton is one of the best-known and most efficient1 are surely and not so very slowly re-shaping the races which are under their influence4 ,we think there was abundant reason for ,governor ,long1 of ,massachusetts1 in his address at ,hampton1 to use these words3 8,horace ,greeley was wont to say that the way to resume is to resume1 and so we would say1 the way to solve the race problem in this country is to solve it20 and this is what the ,hampton ,institute is doing4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,african ,,notes4 --,the ,river ,binue1 one of the great confluents of the ,niger1 which ,bishop ,crowther this privilege4 ,they could not go because we have not enough teachers now to look after them4 ,all the teachers who taught here during the winter1 left on the thirteenth of ,june and will not be back until ,september4 ,some thought that it would be well to close the school during the summer2 but others thought that we had better continue it1 if we could have only five teachers and fifty scholars4 ,we do not expect to have so many scholars in the summer as in the winter2 but what we lose in quantity we hope to gain in quality4 ,moreover1 to keep up the school through the summer1 will aid us in our church-work4 ,it has been said that this school cannot be carried on successfully here in the summer1 for it has been tried and uniform failure has been the result4 ,but if the ,lord be with us we shall endeavor to carry on the work2 if we fail1 it will be no more than what has been done already4 ,one of our greatest difficulties is to secure teachers2 we have tried very hard to get some from among the colored people1 but have few as yet4 ,we are very grateful to those who have come from the ,colored ,presbyterian ,church in the city to help us4 ,but we feel especially thankful to ,mr4 ,j4 ,w4 ,cromwell1 editor of ,the ,people's ,advocate1 a colored newspaper1 published in the city4 ,he holds a high position in one of the ,government departments here1 but this does not make him forgetful of the children of his humbler brethren4 ,he is found every ,sunday afternoon at the ,lincoln ,mission 7unless called away from the city7 teaching the youth some truth from the ,bible4 ,indeed1 he manifests such zeal in our work that we cannot but believe him to be one of our warmest friends4 ,he is our example for all educated colored young men4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,alabama4 ,florence and ,her ,people4 ,,rev4 ,,george ,w4 ,,moore4 ,florence is one of the prettiest towns in ,northern ,alabama4 ,the climate is fine1 the water good1 and the scenery picturesque4 ,it stands upon the banks of the majestic ,tennessee1 which is fast being opened to navigation2 boats now come here from the ,ohio and ,mississippi rivers1 and it is intended to open its channel so that it shall be navigable as far as ,chattanooga4 ,this is a land of abundant foliage1 and one cannot but be attracted by the beautiful gardens of flowers and groves of cedar4 ,to those seeking rest1 or health1 the springs of various kinds of water and the wholesome food are especially welcome4 ,good air1 pure water and magnificent scenery1 ought to have a good influence upon its people1 and it may truthfully be said that ,florence furnishes a good example to our race2 her people are healthy1 cheerful and hospitable4 ,some of them have nice homes1 and there seems to be a disposition in all to improve their condition4 ,to this end1 they have societies1 schools and churches1 and1 last but not least1 they work4 ,one of the additions to the town is a beautiful ,congregational edifice1 which is a little gem1 and the people1 irrespective of race1 say that it is an ornament to the city2 but1 best of all1 it is paid for4 ,the ,a4 ,m4 ,e4 and ,baptist denominations have large and prosperous churches4 ,the ,sunday-schools of all the churches are well attended and in a flourishing condition4 ,the educational work of the county is in full blast2 the whites have good seminaries and normal schools and our people have good common schools4 ,the school at ,florence1 under the management of ,mr4 ,y4 ,a4 ,wallace1 is a centre of quite a number of schools taught by students of the ,baptist ,institute1 ,central ,tennessee ,college and ,fisk ,university4 ,the great need of the place and demand of the colored people1 is a good ,normal school4 ,these common schools would become feeders of this ,normal school1 and thus meet a great need of the county and do much good for the ,state4 ,another mark of progress may be seen in the effort some have made1 and are making1 to get farms4 ,i am told that some of our people in this county have farms containing from ten to three hundred acres4 ,the crops are unusually good this year4 ,if we have rain soon we shall have fine crops of corn and cotton4 ,with the church to ,christianize1 and the school to educate the people1 and the plow to cultivate the soil1 the county of ,lauderdale may well be considered a power for good4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,louisiana4 ,lady-,missionary's ,letter4 ,without designating either the lady or her field1 we give a letter from a missionary among the ,freedmen in a ,southern city4 ,these devoted women1 for whom there is a vast work1 under many discouragements and difficulties are carrying the ,gospel of sympathy and comfort into the lonely cabins in the ,south1 and helping in many ways our larger and more fundamental work4 ,it would be a great mistake to withdraw needed funds from our teaching1 and give them to the visiting missionary1 but it would be a great loss in many ways1 not to multiply the number of those whose mission is to visit the mothers in their homes1 carrying the ,gospel of cleanliness and thrift1 and a knowledge of wifely and motherly ways1 to those who are to shape so largely the next generation4--,,ed4 ,,missionary4 ,i must tell you of my experience last ,sabbath in the 8,house of ,refuge40 ,at #c ,p4 ,m4 ,i took a car up the long1 beautiful1 white shell-road--through 8,st4 ,patrick's ,cemetery0--to the ,institute buildings1 expecting there to meet our superintendent and teachers4 ,for some reason they were detained1 so ,i had to proceed1 though trembling and alone4 ,the position can be appreciated only by those acquainted with the history and training of these poor children4 ,during the school hours1 for our benefit1 boys were screaming1 dogs snarling just outside the doors1 pupils called out1 and once the whole school utterly refused to sing the hymns so pleasing to them4 ,this made me afraid of what might occur to-day2 but the service must not be given up1 though the door was locked and the 8key lost0--the bell overturned1 and no official to be seen about the grounds4 ,trusting1 however1 for guidance1 ,i followed one of the boys through the yard and work-house to the little chapel1 where all had been to mass in the morning4 ,thirty or forty were awaiting our arrival1 and ,i am sure the ,lord helped me1 for that wild1 uproarious group1 through the hour1 remained quiet and gentle1 while ,i had no difficulty in interesting them4 ,my ,sunday-school class in ,central ,church is a great joy and help in my work4 ,commencing with thirty little ones1 the names have increased to one hundred and twenty4 ,through these1 ,i find entrance to many homes otherwise closed to all religious influences4 ,nothing is so pleasing to the mother as interest taken in her children1 and many interviews1 following these friendly calls1 will long be remembered4 ,only kindness and welcome do ,i receive everywhere among them4 ,i have learned truly to pity these poor mothers1 who tell me1 with tears1 how hard it is to bring up their children properly in the midst of all this abounding iniquity4 ,all ,i can bring under the influence of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 work ,i deem a great gain4 ,during the last three days ,i have visited thirty-four families4 ,quite a good number were promised for church and ,sunday-school4 ,one ,sabbath ,i was pleased to see in church three mothers and ten children whom ,i had visited during the week4 ,there are many discouragements attending these efforts1 but there are also many rewards--many bright1 happy faces1 and many happier homes2 many children learning good1 rather than all evil ways2 and so the days go by1 while we take courage in the growing work1 hoping that the little seeds1 as well as the greater1 will take root despondency and fear have given place to the utmost assurance of a great future for the business and social influences of the city4 ,the business season just ended has been one of unexampled prosperity in the history of the city2 all classes have been kept busy2 and as the sanitary improvements1 including a complete and almost perfect system of sewerage1 and durable street pavements1 are pushed forward1 little fear is felt of another visitation of the fever this year4 ,our work has seemed to take on new life and vigor1 and the year just closed1 though cut short two months by the fever1 has been one of special success in every respect4 ,though an unusual number of our students have continued teaching during the year1 our classes have been constantly full1 the enrolment being in advance of last year and the attendance more steady4 ,in industrial work1 such as may be undertaken in a day-school1 we have met with every encouragement and success4 ,the sewing classes1 two each day1 have done much in learning to cut garments and in the various branches of needle-work1 knitting1 etc4 ,the class of older girls in nursing and care of the sick has been a feature of interest4 ,a prominent physician said of the examination which the class passed1 8,if your class answered those questions they ought not only to make safe nurses1 but also fair physicians40 ,we hope another year to have better facilities for this work1 meeting as it does a sad need in colored homes1 and at the same time the most hearty approbation of both colored and white people4 ,our closing exercises were of the usual nature1 the ,junior classes having their exhibition for the benefit of the library1 and netting #ej for that purpose4 ,then followed the public session of the ,literary ,society1 under the management of its members1 and the graduating exerciser1 at which three young men received diplomas4 ,the address given on this occasion by ,judge ,pierce was heartily appreciated and enjoyed by a large audience of both colored and white people4 ,he also presented the diplomas in a manly1 earnest address to the graduates4 ,the final1 and perhaps most significant1 meeting of commencement week was the ,alumni1 at which about a dozen of the graduates of the school--nearly all who have been sent out--gathered1 with teachers and a few friends1 for a pleasant evening4 ,the refreshments were followed with the usual orations and speeches1 and did much to gain for the school an earnest working constituency4 ,we are rejoiced that ,mr4 ,b4 ,a4 ,imes1 of ,oberlin1 accepts the call of the class of the white people1 as indicated in the lecture course given by prominent gentlemen to the school during the year1 and by their aid to the school in other ways1 points to a successful and ,yesterday ,i asked the girls in the sewing class to bring me flowers for the sick at the ,city ,hospital4 ,they were very glad of the opportunity and brought sixty bouquets of our lovely roses and went to the colored ward1 which she had not been in the habit of visiting1 gave each patient a bouquet1 which was very gratefully received1 after which we had a short service consisting of upon the reservation than at any time since the first year ,i came to the agency4 ,this is accounted for by reason of the late visit of three of their chiefs to their great father at ,washington4 ,the report had gone abroad among the roving bands that the bills had passed ,congress1 and they expected to meet the ,indian ,commissioners to counsel upon the sale of their timber1 from which they believed they were to receive large sums of money4 ,all the roving ,indians within a hundred miles had gathered1 and were awaiting my arrival4 ,i soon put their minds at rest1 however1 on that score1 of #a1bjj miles1 first-class passage #h4 ,this included board for a whole week1 and it may startle you to hear that we had genuine strawberries 7the first ,i have seen during seven years' residence in ,china71 which cost the steward five cash each 7half a cent71 and shad at a cost of #b per pair4 ,we always had five or six kinds of meat1 and several kinds of fruit4 ,how this could be afforded was a mystery1 but to me a charming one4 ,the fare provoked even a sick man's appetite1 and the pure sweet river air conduced to sleep2 the weather was fine1 and the scenery1 for one half of the route1 superb4 ,part of the way the banks of the river were flat1 and the view was cut off by tall reeds with which they were lined1 but during the latter half of the upward journey the mountains rose1 often abruptly from the river1 not unfrequently to great heights1 and it was true of some of these1 what ,i supposed before coming to this country was true of all mountains1 that they were terraced and cultivated to their summits4 ,much of the scenery was equal to that on the ,hudson1 minus the residences4 ,the country houses along the river are much poorer than in our ,province of ,hanchow1 and the cities seem older and more dilapidated4 ,the river annually overflows the low grounds from ,april to ,august1 and as it often rises #ej feet above its winter level1 the people build only rude huts4 ,the missionaries at ,hankow inform me that for months they are compelled to use canoes for travel on their streets4 ,it was the busiest season 7,may7 when ,i reached ,hankow1 which until recently was the most interior treaty port of the ,empire4 ,it is separated from ,han ,yang and ,wa-,chang by the ,yang-tse-,kiang and ,han rivers1 and each of them is an immense city4 ,there are some two hundred foreigners here4 ,the ,bund 7,river7 ,st4 has houses only on one side1 and is the finest in ,china4 ,it stands #ej feet above the river1 which for half a mile is faced with splendid stone masonry4 ,it offers the busiest and most ,chinesy sight yet seen in this country4 ,fourteen steamers were lying at the wharves4 ,there is a great rush to get the first new tea into the ,english market4 ,the fleetest steamers are chartered at fabulous prices3 #cb per ton is paid for transportation1 and #a1fjj for river pilots1 on the round trip from ,shanghai to ,hankow and return--a trip of one week4 ,this year the season opened on the ,sabbath1 some taking advantage of the fact that others were at church to begin lading4 ,neither heat1 night1 nor anything else checks the work4 ,the ,russians do the biggest business4 ,they deal chiefly in the coarsest and poorest qualities of tea4 ,stem1 leaf1 and often extraneous matter1 are ground to powder1 steamed and pressed into bricks of convenient size for transportation1 and these are used for money in ,mongolia and ,siberia4 ,hankow is a filthy city4 ,wa-,chang is much better in this respect1 has fine hills1 and a lofty pagoda from which a magnificent view of the surrounding country is obtained4 ,i was hospitably received1 not alone by the missionaries1 but by many outside the mission circles1 who as a rule do not show much kindness to us4 ,i saw much of the mission work1 and found that it was not given exclusively to the natives1 but extended to the sailors in the various ports4 ,ancestral worship1 which is the religion of ,china1 is one of the chief obstacles to the reception of ,christianity4 ,a pigeon-,english-speaking ,chinaman to whom a zealous sister had given a book said1 in answer to her question1 8,how did you like it80 8,that book talkee fool pigeon4 ,i no can leave father2 no can leave mother40 ,he meant he could not cease from worshiping them4 ,i saw here an ancient and queer monument called the 8,lamp of a thousand years40 ,the inscriptions on it are in ,sanscrit1 and have not been deciphered4 ,also a picture representing a miracle of like import to that of ,jesus at ,cana4 ,a landlord had treated one of the genii with great kindness4 ,he rewarded him by turning his well into a wine pool4 ,the host's avarice was awakened1 and he complained that now he had no swill for his pigs1 whereupon the well gave forth water again4 ,hence1 in characterizing an avaricious man1 the ,chinese say 8,if his well bubbled wine he would complain of a lack of swill40 ,smuggling is carried on to a great extent all along the river1 opium and salt being the principal articles thus introduced4 ,the natives employ foreigners to protect their goods1 and the hands on the steamers are engaged in the work1 and are skillful in all manner of tricks by which to evade duties4 ,the whole trip was delightful and most invigorating to a sick missionary4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts ,,for ,,july1 #ahhj4 99 99 99 99 99
