thanks to ,god for the general prosperity of its work1 obituary notices of the ,rev4 ,silas ,mc,keen1 ,d4 ,d41 of ,bradford1 ,vt41 a ,vice-,president1 and ,mrs4 ,benjamin ,james1 of the ,mendi ,mission1 and a brief review of the marked progress of the last thirty-two years in the line of its aim and effort4 ,the ,freedmen4 ,the educational work of the ,association has been vigorously sustained1 with increasing numbers1 and at the cost of great self-denial on the part of both teachers and pupils4 ,new buildings have been erected for the ,emerson ,institute at ,mobile1 ,ala41 for the ,lewis ,high ,school and ,norwich ,chapel at ,macon1 ,ga41 for the ,straight ,university at ,new ,orleans1 ,la41 and for the ,beach ,institute at ,savannah1 ,ga41 under the supervision of ,prof4 ,t4 ,n4 ,chase1 of ,atlanta4 ,they are simple but commodious1 and admirably adapted for their uses1 better located than formerly1 and cost no more than the insurance received for the buildings which they replace4 ,the institutions of the ,association are excellently located4 ,the early educational work was1 of necessity1 altogether primary4 ,as the ,states assumed the support of common schools1 the ,association gave itself more and more to ,normal teaching1 and has always found a demand for more teachers than its schools could furnish4 ,a few more each year are advancing into the collegiate and professional courses4 ,its one ,law and three ,theological classes have been well sustained1 and it has also co-operated with the ,presbytery of ,washington in the support of the ,theological ,department of ,howard ,university4 ,the practical and moral importance of the ,industrial ,departments is also referred to4 ,during the year small amounts have been added to the salaries of a number of common-school teachers1 graduates from its institutions1 enabling them to extend the time of their school-year from three or six to nine months4 ,the need of this work is emphasized by the fact that there are still #c1ejj1jjj over ten years of age in the ,south who cannot read1 over #a1ace1jjj of whom are legal voters4 ,the need of permanent endowments and of student aid are also dwelt upon4 ,a depiction of the influence of these institutions in the homes1 the common schools1 the churches1 and upon the sentiment of the people of the ,south1 and especially of the positiveness of their religious influence1 concludes this part of the ,report4 ,the report of church work adds five new churches organized during the year to its list4 ,judged by the measure of accessions to membership by profession of faith1 these sixty-four churches have not been dead nor fruitless4 ,fifteen of them report from eleven to fifty such additions each1 making an average of over twenty-four1 and amounting to #cfh in all4 ,indications of growth are also found in increased efforts for self-support and for systematic giving4 ,the ,sunday-schools of the churches not only are well sustained1 but the teachers go out into churches of other orders1 and into mission work1 thus reaching many thousands of youth and children4 ,the cause of temperance has been advancing in these churches4 ,the six local conferences have1 by their annual meetings1 shown progress and done good4 ,the difficulties of a rapid extension of church work in the ,south are referred to1 and the hope expressed1 of surmounting such of them as may be overcome under the field-superintendence of ,rev4 ,dr4 ,roy1 who will very soon be in his headquarters at ,atlanta4 ,in summing up the work among the ,freedmen1 encouragement is drawn from the fact that some of the best pastors and teachers now in the field were taken from the streets by the missionary teachers of the ,association1 and have developed under its care to be its fellow-helpers2 also1 that results appear to be more permanent and substantial4 ,africa4 ,four missionaries were sent1 ,feb4 #h1 to the reinforcement of the five who sailed the ,september before4 ,the outlook was discouraging in both its material and spiritual aspects4 ,but they went to work practically and hopefully1 and have labored with good success4 ,twenty-two new members have been received into the church at ,good ,hope4 ,preaching services and ,sunday and day-schools have also been opened at ,avery and ,debia4 ,the missionaries desire increased facilities for taking the children into their homes under their constant care1 a work which they have begun already4 ,the industrial work at ,avery has been revived4 ,these missionary families1 numbering fifteen souls in all1 have endured the trying climate1 and that through its sickly season1 as well as could have been hoped4 ,all of them have been sick2 one of their number has died2 none of them are in impaired health1 so far as can be learned4 ,the report speaks of the intention to strengthen this mission as it may seem to demand1 of the need of means with which to do it1 and of the missionary interest awakened in the ,south1 and especially at ,hampton and ,fisk4 ,the ,indians4 ,the necessity of changing agents has made much unexpected work1 and the difficulties of supplying their places are referred to4 ,the work of ,rev4 ,mr4 ,eells at ,s',kokomish is spoken of4 ,the ,indians show increasing interest in education1 but the unsettled condition of their affairs prevents the best success4 ,the recommendations made by the representatives of the various religious denominations to the ,board of ,commissioners are recited4 ,the possibility of a transfer of the ,indians to the ,war ,department is alluded to1 and deprecated as a long step in retreat4 ,the ,chinese in ,america4 ,the outcries against the ,chinaman1 and the abuse he receives on every hand1 are alluded to as having had already an influence in diminishing the number of those coming to our shores4 ,the ,association has sustained eleven schools during the year1 with #a1dib pupils4 ,the ,chinese ,congregational ,association and the ,bethany ,home have been kept up1 with increasing usefulness4 ,seventy-five have been hopefully converted during the year4 ,the indebtedness of the ,association to ,rev4 ,wm4 ,c4 ,pond1 its superintendent in that work1 is heartily acknowledged4 ,the desire of the ,chinese converts for the conversion of their own people in their native land is referred to as a convincing proof that they have entered into the spirit of the ,master4 ,the new ,chinese embassy to this country is spoken of as full of promise in regard to all the questions affecting that race4 ,finances4 ,the receipts of the year have been #aie1fja4fe2 the expenses have been #ahh1jgi4df1 leaving a balance of #g1ebb4ai4 ,the current receipts are not equal by #ac1jfc4bc to those of the preceding year1 the falling off being mainly in legacies2 and the #ag1ijd4ib in cash 7and #f1iej in pledges7 for the debt may have somewhat lessened the regular gifts4 ,the debt1 two years ago1 was #ic1jjj2 one year ago it was #fc1jjj2 what has been received and saved for it together this year amounts to #be1dbg4aa1 which has reduced it to #cg1chi4gi1 and pledges are held for #f1iej1 which1 when redeemed1 will further diminish it to #cj1dci4gi4 ,the ,committee recognize the hand of the ,lord1 and the hearts of ,his people in this good showing4 ,the ,report makes special mention of the gifts from the field for this object1 and yet the remaining debt is deeply deplored as preventing the enlargement of the work4 ,the careful and wise use of the funds in its hands encourages the ,association to ask for the removal of this its last hindrance4 ,indians1 whose original home was amid the beautiful valleys of old ,berkshire1 in ,massachusetts1 and who1 while there--#acj years ago--enjoyed the stated ministry of ,david ,brainard1 and afterwards of ,jonathan ,edwards1 were moved west as far as the ,state of ,new ,york1 ninety years ago4 ,since then they have been moved five times1 and now a remnant of the tribe occupy a little reservation in ,northern ,wisconsin4 ,why should they have been exposed to such perils as haunt a people1 thus violently and repeatedly torn up by the roots1 and compelled to make new homes far distant from the graves of their sires8 ,or1 rather1 civilized and ,christianized as they are and were1 why should they not long ago have come to individual homestead rights of portions of their land in fee1 with citizenship1 as do multitudes of foreigners1 of far less education8 ,instead of girding the ,indians about with bands of love1 and holding them to their ancient homes1 where they could be easily reached by ,gospel influences1 the nation has taken it for granted that the 8wilderness and solitary place0 was the only fit home for them2 and therefore1 in the expressive language of ,red ,cloud1 has 8kept them on wheels40 ,we have been crowding them before the ever-increasing column of our ,western emigration1 and even now1 the hand of the nation does not spare1 neither does its heart relent4 ,the ,santee and other bands of ,indians1 fully civilized1 are now petitioners for the right to take up homesteads that shall cover the present allotments1 already cultivated and improved by them4 ,their petition is indorsed by the ,indian ,bureau and ,interior ,department1 and though urged upon ,congress last winter by all the added influence of the ,board of ,indian ,commissioners1 nothing was done4 ,congress has always shown more willingness to feed the ,indians than to locate them4 ,to secure progress in civilization1 we must locate them--give them permanent homes1 with all the motives for industry which they will inspire4 ,to herd and feed them from the public crib permanently1 like cattle1 is to degrade and pauperize them1 rather than to civilize and bring them to self-support4 ,there is a feeling quite too common in the community1 that ,indians1 after all1 are only outlaws1 ,ishmaelites1 savages1 8having no rights which white men are bound to respect10 and no elements of character which encourage efforts for their improvement4 ,a popular encyclopdia affirms that1 8as a race1 the animal propensities in the ,indian strongly preponderate over the intellectual1 and render their civilization1 even with the help of education and ,christianity1 an event hardly to be hoped for40 ,neither the experience of ,christian philanthropists1 nor the facts of history1 will justify this sweeping assertion4 ,we do not claim that they have taken on them the nature of angels4 ,we only claim that they are ,,men1 and that our ,divine ,master made no mistake in giving ,his ,gospel to enlighten them1 ,his blood to redeem them1 or ,his command to us to publish that ,gospel to them4 ,if ,eliot and ,brainard and ,edwards found encouragement for ,christian efforts in their behalf1 why may not the ,christians of this generation labor for them with hope8 ,are we wiser or better than they8 ,or are the ,indians worse and their condition more hopeless1 than in the days of our fathers8 ,it is safe to affirm1 in spite of all the obstacles in their path1 that1 under the efforts put forth in their behalf1 many of the ,indian tribes are making commendable progress in civilization1 and large numbers of them are bringing forth in their lives the peaceable fruits of righteousness4 ,we1 therefore1 recommend not only that the ,association continue its work for the evangelization of the ,indians1 but that it enlarge and extend it1 as fast as ,god in ,his providence may open the way4 ,a4 ,c4 ,,barstow1 ,,col4 ,,franklin ,,fairbanks1 ,,rev4 ,a4 ,p4 the ,american ,missionary ,association1 covering the receipts and expenditures for the year ending ,september #cjth1 #ahgh1 respectfully submit the following ,report3 ,the receipts from all sources have been #aie1fja4fe1 or about thirteen thousand dollars less than for the preceding year4 ,the expenses1 including amounts paid for church and educational work1 publications1 cost of collecting funds and cost of administration1 have been #afg1gbh4bc4 ,there is due the ,tillotson ,normal and ,collegiate ,institute #b1ddf4ca1 and there has been paid towards cancelling the debt #be1dbg4aa4 ,of the amount paid upon the debt1 the sum of #ag1ijd4ib was contributed directly for the purpose1 and #g1ebb4ai has been saved from the income of the year4 ,your ,committee are happy to testify1 that the administration of the affairs of the ,association appears to have been conducted with wisdom1 ability and faithfulness4 ,while the work for the year has not been curtailed1 the receipts have been less4 ,yet from them quite a sum has been saved towards cancelling the indebtedness4 ,it is greatly to be regretted1 that the receipts during the year have not been sufficient to pay in full the debt1 as there still remains unpaid1 and unprovided for1 the sum of #cj1dci4gi4 ,certainly it would seem that our churches could easily contribute this sum1 which1 if done1 would give your ,executive ,committee new courage to plan for the extension of work now so well established and wisely conducted4 ,your ,committee would suggest that an effort be made to extend the paying circulation of the monthly publication1 the 8,,american ,,missionary10 which is now so attractive and desirable1 communicating as it does1 information relating to the operations and needs of the ,association1 and the progress made in the different fields of its occupation4 ,the administrative expenses seem to us small1 compared with the magnitude and importance of the work accomplished1 giving evidence that this department is conducted with great economy1 and most conscientious fidelity4 ,when we consider the nature and extent of the work committed to the care of this organization1 and that the appeal comes to us as a ,christian duty1 to help educate and ,christianize these millions of our own citizens1 now living in a condition of ignorance and degradation1 we are forced to the conclusion1 that our churches do not realize sufficiently1 either their obligation or privilege1 to meet the call with liberal and glad contributions4 ,the annual receipts of this ,association1 engaged in ,christian work second in importance of no other1 ought to be greatly increased4 ,may we not ask the ,pastors of our churches1 to bring to the attention of their congregations1 the necessities of those for whom this ,association is laboring2 and we urge individual ,christians to such faithful labor and consecration as will extend a knowledge of the needs and deepen the interest felt in this great and good work1 so that contributions may be largely increased4 ,from an examination of the various statements submitted1 showing in detail the operations of the ,association1 and the condition of the property interests it has in charge1 your ,committee are prepared to commend it most heartily to the continued confidence and sympathy of our churches1 and to recommend that every effort be made to secure ,p4 ,de,forrest read the report of the committee on 8,moral and ,religious ,education10 as follows3 ,the ,committee1 to whom was assigned the topic of 8,moral and ,religious ,education1 especially among the colored women of the ,south10 offer their ,report with a deep conviction of the central and commanding importance of the work thus indicated4 ,the two faculties which1 in the ,freedman1 need chief attention1 are his intellect and his conscience4 ,of these1 the moral faculty must take precedence in importance4 ,by the effect of slavery1 and its accompanying influences1 acting through many generations1 a blight amounting1 in some directions1 well-nigh to extinguishment1 has fallen upon his moral sense4 ,his education1 under the old system1 did not develop this faculty1 for it was only the hard education of rough contact with life and with men1 which1 indeed1 sharpened his intellect sometimes1 but buried conscience yet deeper under the weight of false teaching and falser custom4 ,his religion did not help him here1 for it has been a sensuous and emotional experience1 not deemed inconsistent with the grossest violations of moral law4 ,it is the work of ,associations like this to solemnize1 in his behalf1 the marriage1 subject to no subsequent divorce1 of religion and morality4 ,and it is1 we believe1 a happy quality of the genius of ,congregationalism1 that it will not pour oil upon the flame of emotional piety1 but will chiefly emphasize the spiritual truths and moral laws which forever underlie all true religion4 ,but now the question arises1 whether1 in all our planning and thinking for the ,freedman1 too little has not been said and thought by our churches in regard to the ,freedwoman4 ,she1 like her brother1 has been debased by slavery2 debased1 moreover1 in the very citadel of her sacred womanhood1 until the very instinct on which the sanctity of the home must rest1 if it exist at all1 has become almost extirpated4 ,there can be no elevation of the ,freedman that does not rest upon the moral restoration of the ,freedwoman4 ,the position of woman is everywhere the measure of moral attainment1 and here1 where she has become the sport and lawful prey of two races1 she more than ever holds the key of the situation4 ,the feeling1 gaining strength through all the experience of our missionaries and teachers and superintendents1 that an effort needs to be made for her benefit distinctly1 now demands expression in the councils of this body4 ,your ,committee has no new light upon this subject2 it has no specific to offer for the evil which makes so great a demand upon our sympathy4 ,we can only appeal to this body1 and to the churches1 whether now1 in the spectacle of two and a half millions of ,freedwomen1 of whom only a mere fraction are yet under the influence of schools and pure churches1 lifting up their cry1 not 8from ,greenland's icy mountains1 nor ,india's coral strand10 nor whence 8,afric's sunny fountains roll down their golden sand10 but from the sunny half of these ,united ,states of ,america1 we have not a call of ,god1 which the dullest ear cannot fail to hear4 ,and we1 brethren and sisters1 are charged with the duty of responding to this cry1 with no uncertain sound4 ,the ,committee feel the responsibility which rests upon them in undertaking to propose new measures1 and hesitate to offer too radical suggestions4 ,yet1 they cannot be deaf to the appeal of this kind of work1 or content themselves with vague and general exhortations4 ,we hail as a good omen1 and as an indication of ,providence as to the course to be taken1 the fact that already1 through the influence of one ,christian lady of the ,northwest1 a lady missionary1 specially instructed to labor among the homes of the ,freedmen1 by personal contact1 for the moral and religious education of the colored woman1 is now actually at work4 ,our recommendation is that1 following out this beginning1 ,christian women of mature experience and wise tact be appointed1 to such an extent as funds will permit1 who shall labor for the elevation of the ,freedwomen1 by those methods of personal influence which are1 of all1 most efficient4 ,we believe that in no other way can we strike so nearly at the root of the ignorance and immorality which1 in behalf of the ,freedmen1 we contend against4 ,but1 obviously1 it would not be right to take the funds appropriated for education or church extension for this purpose1 and thereby curtail a work which needs1 on the contrary1 to be at once extended4 ,whence shall the support of these lady workers come1 then8 ,we feel constrained1 in reply1 to appeal to that large and earnest body to whom we are not wont to appeal in vain--the ,christian women of our ,northern churches4 ,suppose that in each church an appeal should be made to the ladies1 already doing much in missionary work1 and sending generous supplies of clothing and other necessaries to the ,freedmen1 to assume the responsibility of supporting1 either themselves or in conjunction with neighboring churches1 these female workers among the ,freedwomen4 ,could they1 would they resist the appeal of this sister of theirs1 upon whom iron despotism has set its mark of deep degradation1 through no fault of hers1 and who now lifts up appealing eyes1 pleading to be restored to the sisterhood of the pure and the holy1 to whom manhood owes all that is noblest and highest in its proudest development8 ,we know them better than to imagine any such refusal4 ,we believe the ,christian women of the ,north1 when once this channel is opened1 will see in it their choice opportunity1 and respond in a way that shall set forward our work by a great advance4 ,and we further offer the suggestion1 following again a thought which has been born1 and has already1 to a degree1 taken form1 in the field of labor1 that in the principal centres of the ,southern field1 local organizations of women may be constituted1 which shall have special charge of this work1 and through which the funds raised may be applied to their purpose4 ,by this three-fold chain of operations--the appointment of ,christian women of mature character to special labor among the ,freedwomen1 the organization of local boards of women at the several centres of operation1 and support by the ,christian ladies of the ,north--it seems to the ,committee that this important and too long neglected work may be simply and effectually accomplished4 ,and1 as rapidly as the developments will allow1 we believe the work in the field should be passed into the hands of the elevated and ,christianized ,freedwoman herself1 who1 not only by visitation1 but by the example of her own holy womanhood1 and her own ,christian home1 shall disseminate the forces of light through all the darkness of the land where she lives4 ,,rev4 ,h4 ,p4 ,,deforrest4 ,rev4 ,g4 ,s4 ,pope1 of ,tougaloo1 ,miss41 spoke upon the topic4 ,the report of the committee on the 8,normal ,work of the ,association0 was presented by ,rev4 ,w4 ,w4 ,adams1 ,d4 ,d41 as follows3 ,your ,committee congratulate the ,association on the work of the year1 as represented in the ,report4 ,it is but seventeen years since the first school for ,freedmen was opened1 and but twelve years since the first ,normal school was started4 ,last year #g1bbi pupils were under instruction in the schools of this ,association1 of whom #a1dei were in ,normal schools4 ,the increase in the number of pupils of all grades last year1 over the number of the year before1 was #a1ghi2 in ,normal schools the increase was #abf2 in college and professional schools1 #ej4 ,the eagerness of the colored people to obtain at least a rudimentary education has ever been a most encouraging sign4 ,the young man who last year walked fifty miles with his trunk upon his back that he might enter school1 recalls the zeal of the late ,dr4 ,goodell1 of ,constantinople1 who1 in his youth1 also walked sixty miles1 with a trunk strapped upon his back1 that he might enter the ,phillips ,academy at ,andover4 ,the demand for teachers from the ,normal schools--quite beyond the ability to supply them--is one of the surest indications that the schools are meeting an urgent need4 ,but the tendency of some pupils to consider themselves qualified to become teachers1 after obtaining the merest rudiments of knowledge1 is earnestly to be deprecated and discouraged4 ,it needs to be dealt with as an easily besetting sin4 ,the replacing of the burned buildings by new ones1 at a cost within the amounts of insurance recovered1 the better location of some of them1 the increasing1 and increasingly expressed sympathy of the better classes of ,southern whites with the educational work of the ,association1 are also occasions of congratulation4 ,the devotion of a portion of the time of pupils to manual labor is to be commended on grounds of economy1 of industrial training1 of the best and most diversified moral culture4 ,we very earnestly commend to the friends of the ,association the appeal of its officers for permanent endowments of the higher institutions4 ,the elevation of the colored race must be in large measure the work of colored men and women4 ,but they must first be trained for their work in institutions established among them4 ,without endowment there is no assurance of permanence in the institutions we have already given them2 without endowment they are not established2 the labor of the past is not secured from total loss in the future4 ,it needs to be distinctly emphasized1 also1 that the permanent establishment of educational institutions of a high order is the great work of this ,association among the colored men1 and the foundation for all uplifting work beside4 ,the continuous training of our schools--intellectual1 industrial1 social and moral training1 all in one--is needed for the development of higher ideals and nobler types of character1 and1 we are happy to add1 has already resulted in such development in not a few of the pupils4 ,this training is needed as a counterpoise to the operation1 otherwise mischievous because unbalanced1 of some prominent forces of the ,african temperament2 needed to hold the imagination within the limits of reason and righteousness1 to curb emotional excess1 to save life from becoming the sport of changeful impulses4 ,experience has proved that the training given changes the type of piety greatly for the better4 ,it is not less fervent1 but it is less exclusively and wildly emotional4 ,it becomes more rational1 more consistent2 it has more of principle and character in it2 it is more truly a service of righteousness1 more reputable1 more effective for good4 ,in order that church membership may be helpful rather than harmful to righteousness1 and that church life among the ,africans may be genuinely ,christian1 there is urgent need of a worthier ,christian education of the ,african ministry4 ,it is peculiarly our work to give that education4 ,the general education provided for through our ,normal schools is indispensable1 that the colored people may deserve and command the respect of their white fellow-citizens at the ,south2 that they may clearly understand their rights as citizens2 may know how to secure them and make wise use of them4 ,it has been truly said that the work of uplifting the colored race is1 from beginning to end1 a long1 slow process of education4 ,in that process the ,normal schools and higher institutions of the ,american ,missionary ,association have a place second in importance to no other4 ,we have begun a good work2 the question now is1 whether we shall do it or leave it undone through lack of establishing the institutions we have founded4 ,,rev4 presented the following statement and suggestions3 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association at its meeting in ,taunton1 ,mass41 adopted the following statement and suggestions respecting its debt3 ,the debt of this ,association has been1 and still is1 a great hindrance to its progress1 preventing that advance which is so much needed along the whole line of endeavors4 ,the ,association welcomes1 with hearty thanks to ,god1 the report of its treasurer1 announcing the still further reduction of the debt1 bringing the amount down1 if all pledges are paid1 to #be1jjj4 ,an effort having been made at this meeting to secure pledges of #be each1 encouraging responses were made1 amounting to over #c1jjj4 ,in view of these facts it was resolved that an effort be made for the total extinction of the debt1 and the following suggestions are offered as to the methods in which our friends may aid us3 #a4 ,individuals and households1 who are interested in our work1 may send pledges of one or more shares 7of #be each71 as their ability and benevolence may suggest1 the more wealthy being asked to remember that if the debt is paid1 some of the contributions must be large and liberal4 #b4 ,pastors may invite their congregations to make such pledges4 #c4 ,pastors may 7as some have volunteered at this meeting to do7 bring the subject before the local conferences1 and awaken an interest in securing such pledges4 #d4 ,the ,day of ,thanksgiving is near at hand1 and a glad offering for this purpose may be an acceptable gift to the ,god of all mercies1 as well as helpful to the ,association4 #e4 ,the holiday season1 not far distant1 may be made the occasion of like offerings4 ,the ,association intrusts to its ,executive officers the duty of selecting and carrying out the best methods for laying these suggestions before the friends of the despised races of ,america4 ,the report was accepted and adopted4 ,rev4 ,edward ,strong1 ,d4 ,d41 read the report of the ,committee on ,church ,extension1 as follows3 ,the ,committee to whom was referred the portion of the ,annual ,report which relates to ,church ,extension at the ,south1 submit the following3 ,we notice that the church work1 like the educational1 is growing on our hands4 ,five new churches--especially if each prove a metropolitan or mother church--is a gain for which to give thanks and from which to take courage4 ,sixty-five churches in all1 though most of them are connected with our educational institutions1 or near them1 is certainly not a bad showing for thirteen years of labor4 ,we notice also1 with pleasure1 a cheering growth the last year by conversions from the world4 ,in fifteen only of the churches1 this growth gives a total of #ceh additions1 an average of twenty-four4 ,have our ,northern churches done so well8 ,it is equally gratifying to learn what kind of ,christians our churches ,south are making1 or seeking to make2 to know our students are pledged to work2 what these converts think of the standard of morality enjoined by the ,gospel2 the honesty1 purity and truth--in short1 the practical righteousness which ,god ordains4 ,we rejoice to know that this ,association has planted1 and is training1 these ,southern churches to be the salt of that part of the earth--cities on a hill1 lights in dark places--so recognized1 having the reputation of being ,bible ,christians--industrious1 virtuous1 zealous of good works--thus already having obtained a good report4 ,it is cheering to learn that some of the best of the pastors of these sixty-five churches have been raised not only from bondage1 but from all the degradation of slavery--boys picked up in the street1 and polished like diamonds1 for the ,master's use4 ,we have certainly made a beginning in the matter of church extension1 as in that of education4 ,not the least gratifying feature is seen in the character1 the growing influence1 and reputation1 even among the whites1 which these churches enjoy1 though some of them are numerically small4 ,by your instrumentality and the grace of ,god1 they have learned what a ,christian character is1 and that ,christ's friends are not those who can sing loud and pray loud1 whether they are honest or thievish1 tell the truth or lies1 are virtuous or licentious2 not those who1 with these immoralities1 crowd sanctuaries and make them echo2 but1 rather1 those who keep the commandments of ,god4 ,this ,association crowded the years before the war fighting against the extension of slavery2 then crowded the years during the war1 and those immediately following it1 with efforts to teach the colored people to read the ,bible2 and later1 devoted itself to the work of planting higher institutions--as at ,hampton and ,nashville and ,new ,orleans--in order to make of the blacks men of a higher1 nobler type1 teaching and preaching men1 worthy to lead their host4 ,shall it now set them to no grand work of evangelization among their fellows8 ,the question is1 whether you1 who have always been identified with ,congregationalism1 and still love it1 after long trial and large observation1 will give it a fair trial ,south8 ,we rejoice in your plan to move slowly in this1 and wisely4 ,we warmly approve your selection of ,dr4 ,j4 ,e4 ,roy to reconnoitre the whole field1 and report4 ,palfrey says1 8,faith in ,god1 faith in man1 and in work10 was the brief formula taught by the founders of ,new ,england4 ,may we not1 the children of the ,pilgrims1 have faith enough in ,god and in these men to give them the church polity of these founders8 ,we are encouraged to recommend the planting of ,congregational churches among the blacks1 because we have great advantages in so doing4 ,the eager aspiration of the blacks to be men1 will help4 ,congregationalism has a clean record ,south4 ,has any other of our leading denominations8 ,there is no prejudice to be overcome by it1 as a polity4 ,in the competitions of the denominations on the ground1 will not there be an advantage for us8 ,then1 again1 the colored people look upon this ,association as a tried friend1 and trust it4 ,is not this an advantage8 ,and1 further1 has not ,providence opened the ,south to our polity1 as well as piety1 in a marked manner8 ,the work already accomplished has shown the tree to be good1 and given it favor widely1 even among the old masters4 ,hence the aid given to our institutions by several of the ,states4 ,hence the high hope of many whites1 that our work will do much to tone up the blacks in all that belongs to good citizenship1 good morality1 and proper church discipline4 ,as ,mohammedan ,turkey1 and ,pagan ,hawaii and ,india1 have welcomed the ,christian homes planted among them by the missionaries1 and as the mission churches have been a leaven of light in their social and political life1 so it has been1 and will more and more be1 as you establish your church centres over the ,south4 ,in conclusion1 then1 we approve what seems to be the thought of the ,executive ,committee--to 8advance its activities in the direction of saving souls at the ,south1 and organize churches of our polity1 as really missionary centres of leavening influence4 ,let the trial of our polity at the ,south be a fair and full one1 carrying out our ideas of ,christian doctrine and morality4 ,thus1 as we pray and believe1 will that wilderness the sooner bud and blossom like the rose40 ,we recommend1 therefore1 the adoption of the following resolution3 ,resolved1 ,that this ,association approves the plan of its ,executive ,committee--to make a careful examination of the field at the ,south1 and infuse new activity into its church work1 organizing churches1 where the way is open1 on the principles of the ,congregational order4 ,,rev4 ,,edward ,,strong1 ,d4 ,d4 ,,rev4 ,,wm4 ,l4 ,,gaylord4 ,,rev4 ,a4 ,h4 ,,plumb4 ,,rev4 ,d4 ,o4 ,,mears4 ,,rev4 ,o4 ,t4 ,,lanphear1 ,d4 ,d4 ,the resolution was adopted4 ,rev4 ,edward ,s4 ,atwood1 of ,salem1 presented the report of the committee upon the 8,chinese in ,america10 as follows3 ,the ,committee1 to whom was referred that portion of the ,annual ,report which relates to mission work among the ,chinese in ,america1 would respectfully submit the following3 ,we recognize with satisfaction the positive and demonstrable success of the ,association in this department of labor--a success emphatically evidenced by the #a1ejj gathered into the day-schools2 the increased usefulness of the ,bethany ,home2 the seventy-five conversions during the year1 and the ardent desire of these newly-born souls for the ,gospel light to shine on their native and beloved land4 ,were we to stop here and content ourselves with the mere statistics of progress1 we should have no hesitation in saying to the officers and the missionaries of the ,association1 8,servants of ,god1 well done60 ,but simple justice compels a larger view of the matter4 ,there is something to be taken into account besides these nominal assets4 ,the chief worth of the work done lies in the fact that1 in the doing of it1 the ,association has been loyal to its old and fixed theory1 that a man is a man everywhere and always1 with a soul to be saved1 and a ,saviour sufficient for its needs4 ,questions of nationality are irrelevant4 ,the simple fact of humanity is all that needs to be known in order to institute a legitimate claim for the giving of the ,gospel1 by those who have it in trust4 ,in this department of work1 loyalty has not been an easy matter4 ,the rough1 unreasoning passions of the mob have glanced fiercely against it4 ,iniquity1 baptised with the name of legislation1 has endeavored to thwart it4 ,the conciliatory conservatism of timid1 good men1 has been eager to dispense its soporific platitudes1 and generous in prescribing its universal panacea for all difficulties--8,let us have peace60 ,the unwarrantable enmity to the ,mongolian on the ,pacific ,coast has been supplemented and reinforced by the unaccountable apathy on the ,atlantic shore of the continent4 ,yet1 undaunted by these accumulated obstacles1 the ,association has said1 like the great ,missionary ,apostle2 8,none of these things move me40 8,the waves of the ,yellow ,sea10 it has said1 8break on a land peopled by men for whom ,christ died4 ,if we can reach them without crossing thousands of intervening leagues of ocean1 so much the better40 ,in spite of hostility1 often white-hot2 in spite of statute books1 whose leaves were blistered with iniquitous provisions2 in spite of the furious rage of lawless crowds1 the ,association has passed through the thick and peril of opposition of every sort1 and taken by the hand the despised ,mongolian1 against whom so many scowling faces were set1 and so many angry hands raised1 and called him 8,brother10 claiming kinship1 and tendering the richest offices of help4 ,for this1 especially1 the constituency of this ,association should say to its management3 8,vastly well done40 ,the old banner under which the ,society was organized is still 8full high advanced40 ,it is no small honor in these degenerate times to find men who are faithful to their trust at any cost4 ,but more than this1 it is believed that in this department the ,association is doing germinal work4 ,the few early ears that have ripened for our encouragement are types and prophecies of a greater coming harvest4 ,in any other view of the matter the religion of the ,gospel is spiritual class legislation4 ,it is suited to the needs of the few and not the many4 ,the ,cross loses its power under the shadow of the ,great ,wall2 and men scorn1 as well they may1 such a deduction as that2 they are shut up to the only other possible conclusion1 that the school1 the mission work1 the unfolded ,word1 will effect in the ,pacific ,coast1 and among the ,chinese immigrants1 just what it effects here and among us4 ,and1 therefore1 we say to the ,association that its high mission in this hour is to push its work4 ,let it turn a deaf ear to all pleadings to stay its hand1 however plausible those pleadings may be1 and from whatever quarter they may come4 ,let it distrust the shallow expedients of so-called statesmen1 who are even shallower than their expedients4 ,let it give no heed to the unreasoning taunts and empty rage of ,communism1 but push its work2 secure in the fact that back of its efforts is the intelligent ,christian public sentiment of the land2 and still more encouraged by the greater fact1 that the ,god who has made of one blood all nations1 and provided one ,gospel for all men1 is saying with an emphasis that cannot be mistaken1 8,go forward60 ,,rev4 ,e4 ,s4 ,,atwood4 ,,rev4 ,g4 ,r4 ,w4 ,,scott4 ,the report was as follows3 ,your ,committee on so much of the report of the ,executive ,committee as relates to the ,mendi ,mission in ,africa1 beg leave to submit the following3 ,at the time of the last ,annual ,meeting of this body1 the first company of colored missionaries was on its way to the ,mendi ,mission4 ,the plan of sending out to ,africa men and women of ,african descent redeemed from ,american slavery1 converted and educated at the ,south1 was long and thoroughly considered before it was adopted for action4 ,great care was exercised in selecting this first band of colored missionaries1 and it is evident that the right workers were sent forth to test the experiment--persons of deep1 earnest piety1 of more than ordinary common sense1 and of sound education1 as their communications to the ,executive ,committee show4 ,in ,february two other missionaries1 and their wives1 were sent out to help the too small number of those who set sail for ,africa in ,september4 ,this year's trial has proved two things3 7#a7 ,that persons of ,african descent can endure the sickly climate of the country of which their ancestors were natives1 better than white missionaries3 and 7#b7 ,that converted and educated ,freedmen and women are equal to the work of wise1 thorough missionary labor in the land of their fathers4 ,everything at the stations to which these brethren and sisters were sent1 seems to have been improved under their management4 ,converts have been multiplied and pupils gathered into the schools in augmented numbers4 ,the call is for an enlarged number of missionaries to occupy this promising field1 and for more ample provisions to enable them to take a larger number of native children into their homes1 8to be under their care1 as well as removed from the debasing influences of their heathen surroundings40 ,the ,executive ,committee express the hope that1 with the strengthening of these mission stations1 8they may be made the point of departure for a mission into the interior of ,africa40 ,it is a grand1 inspiriting idea1 that the men and women the best adapted to civilize and ,christianize the millions of ,africa1 are to be found among those who1 at the ,south1 were so lately in bondage1 and fitted for their work as foreign missionaries in ,normal schools1 ,colleges1 and ,theological ,seminaries1 planted and sustained by ,northern philanthropists and ,christians1 not on ,northern but ,southern soil4 ,the ,executive ,committee can only delay to enlarge these missionary operations in ,africa on account of the too limited amount of means in the ,treasury of the ,association4 ,your ,committee present the following ,resolutions3 #a4 ,that we recognize with heartfelt gratitude to ,god1 ,his evident approval of the plan of attempting to evangelize ,africa by the sons and daughters of ,africans born in this country1 brought out of slavery under the ,proclamation of ,emancipation of ,president ,lincoln1 and here converted and educated for this glorious work in their fatherland4 #b4 ,that we cannot do otherwise than lay on the churches the responsibility of increasing their contributions in aid of this ,association1 so as to enable ,,of ,,rev4 ,,sylvanus ,,heywood4 ,,mr4 ,,president ,,and ,,christian ,,friends3 ,i do not feel that ,i can stand here to give any instruction1 nor scarcely any stimulus1 in the work you are engaged in4 ,your presence is enough for that4 ,but there are four or five points which seem to need special emphasis at this time--points upon which there appears to be some doubt in the minds of the people of the ,north4 ,first1 is there absolute necessity of a higher education for the ,freedmen in the ,united ,states8 ,i do not say of a common-school education1 for all admit the necessity of that4 ,but ,i apprehend that there are many people who doubt the policy of founding universities at the ,south4 ,i have a suspicion that thousands of dollars have been withheld from this ,association for that very reason4 ,this seems to me a most important work4 ,i think upon it depends the vital principle of equal rights for all4 ,you may enact laws1 and hedge them about with penalties for securing the rights of the blacks1 but law alone will prove a failure4 ,but give to them the highest ,christian culture1 and they will not only demand1 but command1 their rights4 ,give them a common-school education1 and it will be a blessing to them2 but with nothing more1 they will remain but hewers of wood and drawers of water4 ,they will be in society1 but not of it4 ,but give them the highest culture among cultured men1 and the case will be far different4 ,it is too late in the day to raise the question whether they are capable of this4 ,this ,association has demonstrated that1 day by day4 ,i have spent ten years as a teacher among the whites1 and two among the blacks2 and ,i must say that ,i accomplished more in those two years than in the ten--more in the way of giving instruction4 ,i say it is too late to raise that question at all4 ,it is already demonstrated4 ,let them be educated with broad culture4 ,let them have the training that will put them in possession of practical skill1 such as shall win success4 ,let them have their own lawyers1 well trained in legal lore1 so that they shall be able--in that natural eloquence in which they excel--to carry conviction to dignified courts4 ,let them have clergymen1 not only earnest and sanctified1 but able to cope with the deep things of science and theology--men able to stand before the most learned bodies4 ,let them have statesmen1 well grounded in philosophy1 history and government1 so that they will be able not only to win victories upon the stump1 but in the halls of legislation4 ,let their homes become homes of ,christian culture and social refinement ,then1 and not till then1 will they cease to struggle for their rights1 and will take them2 and not a dog will dare wag his tongue against them4 ,i feel that this is a subject of the most vital importance4 ,whoever considers it1 ,i think will say that this ,association has been wise in planting these influences at the ,south4 ,i believe that here lies the master-key to its social and political problems4 ,the next point to which ,i would call your attention is the necessity of planting new churches all over the ,south--,congregational churches4 ,people ask if they need such churches down there now4 ,certainly2 and it is practically impossible to work there without them4 ,we must work there with them4 ,we have heard to-day that the old churches in the shadow of our institutions have grown purer and better4 ,it is absolutely necessary that there should be an influence from the outside upon these churches4 ,men ask after the ,uncle ,toms of the ,south--ask if it is all imagination4 ,by no means4 ,the ,uncle ,toms of the ,south are met just about as frequently as the ,harlan ,pages of the ,north4 ,men say that the old churches largely stand in the way of their own people4 ,people testify that one of the greatest obstacles in the way of this educational question is to be found in the pastors themselves of those churches4 ,as a class1 they do not want their flocks to know more than they do4 ,this is one of the greatest difficulties to be contended with4 ,we must have churches outside of the old ones4 ,does not the grace of ,god abound in them8 ,yes1 ,i believe there are multitudes who have it4 ,but when that question is asked1 ,i am always reminded of that familiar anecdote of the old clergyman who had a fair daughter who was noted for her violent temper4 ,a young man became enamored of her1 and asked for her hand4 ,the old man was not willing to palm off damaged goods4 ,he said1 8,it is not wise to take her40 8,why not80 said the young man2 8isn't she a ,christian2 isn't she converted80 8,yes10 said the old man1 8but you must remember that the grace of ,god can live where you and ,i can't40 ,so the grace of ,god can bring forth influences to serve ,him down there1 but these churches stand as an obstacle4 ,it is absolutely necessary to form new churches1 that we be not burdened by the old effete organizations4 ,i believe in ,congregationalism4 ,it may be very well for those of a different polity to talk of the ,god of the hills and the valleys and the dry places and streams2 but our ,god is the ,king of the whole earth4 ,it may be well for those of a different polity to quote their different authorities1 but the only authority we recognize is the authority of ,him whose dominion stretches from sea to sea and from pole to pole4 ,such is ,congregationalism4 ,it is adapted to every human being ,god has made4 ,it may indeed take on different forms4 ,you have pure1 limpid water4 ,pour it into different vessels1 but it will be the same limpid water still4 ,so1 take ,congregationalism in the tropics or wherever you please1 and it will be ,congregationalism still4 ,brother ,pike would not pardon me if ,i did not allude to ,africa4 ,the ways of ,god are mysterious4 ,we must walk by faith1 and not by sight4 ,we hear ,his voice saying1 8,this is the way2 walk ye in it40 ,in this darkness we see ,his hand4 ,the providence of ,god towards this nation1 for generations1 was exceedingly mysterious4 ,but during the last forty years it has been becoming exceedingly clear4 ,in the raising of this ,society and the doing away with slavery1 we can see almost visibly the hand of ,god displayed upon the midnight sky1 pointing to that dark continent1 saying we should send these freemen forth as apostles of light1 to purify and make glad their ancestral homes4 ,and ,i believe the providence of ,god is leading us to still greater achievements4 ,this ,association1 born amid the throes of slavery1 is almost the only organization that stands for that principle which underlies the oneness of humanity4 ,it seems to have been raised up that through it the churches might bring their influence to bear upon the vital issue of the hour4 ,what is it8 ,the same as it has been from the beginning of this nation--the same as in ,india--caste is the barrier everywhere4 ,the battle rages to-day from ,maine to ,california between classes of men4 ,it is for this ,association to stand up and contend against the foes that arise against whatever is good and right4 ,if this ,association ever hesitates thus to stand1 whether it be in ,south ,carolina1 ,massachusetts1 or the ,black ,hills1 then will its prestige be lost4 ,but1 thank ,god1 there is no such fate for this ,society4 ,when the wolves of ,communism are barking about our doors2 when the shrieks of degrading socialism come up into our ears1 it is no time to hesitate4 ,it is time to resist their filth and set up the banner of that pure ,gospel1 under whose folds can be no bondman--neither ,chinaman nor black--but where all shall enjoy the equality of the sons of ,god4 ,we can almost see the hand of ,god visibly pouring into this nation from all sides as into the extended hopper of a mighty mill1 that here they may be amalgamated4 ,here ,he brought the red man of the forest2 then the ,anglo-,saxon race2 then ,he reached out to ,africa and plucked up the black diamond2 then ,he sent the phlegmatic ,teutons and the ,scandinavians2 and even now ,he is opening old ,cathay and pouring upon us swarms of ,asiatics4 8,he hath made of one blood all nations of men that dwell upon the face of the whole earth40 ,there is no proposition which so awakens the fiendish hate of mankind as this4 ,states and nations are rising up in indignation against this purpose of ,god4 ,it belongs to ,christian people to stand up and denounce ,god's curse on whoever shall deny ,his will4 ,accursed be he who dares to keep out any nation or tribe under the heavens6 ,accursed any political party that goes through the country trying to raise a quarrel between men6 ,yea1 accursed will be the nation itself that dares to make enactments to separate or make distinctions between races of men6 ,it belongs to ,christian people to stand up1 and1 in the teeth of antagonism1 in defiance of ,states1 governments1 legislatures1 and ,protestant ,congresses in the ,united ,states--to declare1 8,what ,god hath joined together1 let not man put asunder40 ,there are many insects from which we shrink with loathing4 ,but here comes the naturalist who takes his lens and pours in upon the insect the solar ray1 and we stand back in amazement at the beauty and perfection of the work of ,god4 ,it is the duty of us all to act the part of the naturalist towards these despised races--these degraded classes4 ,let us put them under the lens of that wonderful utterance3 8,inasmuch as ye did it unto one of the least of these ye did it unto me40 ,pour into that lens the light of the last day1 and we shall see them endued with the majesty of the ,most ,high ,god4 ,i believe this the pressing duty of the hour4 ,if we shall take counsel of our fears--if we are afraid to let ,christianity grapple with infidel ,romanism1 even with heathenism1 ,god will remand us back to forty years in the wilderness1 but will bring in our children to drive out these ,anakim of our faithless terror4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,address ,,on ,,chinese ,,missions ,,in ,,america4 ,,rev4 ,e4 ,s4 ,,atwood4 ,i am requested to add to the written report a few words1 which will be unreasonably brief1 in view of the importance of the subject4 ,i count it a great misfortune that we should have been obliged to postpone to the last1 weary1 unenthusiastic hours of our meeting1 the consideration of a subject which is one of the great problems this ,association is set to solve4 ,it would have been well for us if we had been allowed time to open the information that is accessible to us on this subject4 ,there are many who think the ,chinese question a very small affair4 ,we get but faint rumors of it on these ,eastern shores4 ,yet that little cloud on the ,western horizon1 not larger than a man's hand to-day1 is destined to cover the whole land1 and will either be found to be filled with tempests or refreshing rain1 according as the people meet the exigencies of the hour4 ,the ,chinese question will by-and-by1 ,i believe1 assume a proportion quite equal to that of the negro question4 ,there is this peculiarity about it--almost every other department of work in this ,association is amply provided for4 ,the question of the evangelization of the ,indian is comparatively a temporary question2 for not many generations will pass before only a scattered remnant of ,indian tribes will be left in this land4 ,the welfare and lifting up of the black race is continually under consideration4 ,but who cares for the ,chinese8 ,the discussion in regard to them is limited and local4 ,and yet their presence on this continent is a matter of national interest4 ,it starts grave problems1 that have somehow to be studied and solved4 ,there are three classes in the land to-day who are studying this question1 and are giving us their conclusions upon it4 ,first of all1 we have the ,communists1 east and west1 who are trying to grapple with the question1 and settle it4 ,we have one ,dennis ,kearney going up and down the land1 and men say he is a loud-mouthed demagogue1 whose utterances have no weight of public opinion behind them4 ,not at all1 ,mr4 ,president4 ,dennis ,kearney is a representative man--a ,john the ,baptist1 crying1 8,prepare ye the way of the ,devil1 and make his paths straight40 ,communism1 as a whole1 proposes to deal with the ,chinese1 by driving them out from the land4 ,if you doubt that assertion1 look at the facts4 ,documentary statements in regard to the matter1 compiled by ,b4 ,s4 ,brooks1 an eminent counsellor on the ,pacific ,coast1 have been presented to a ,joint ,commission of both ,houses of ,congress4 ,i wish they could be put into the hands of every ,christian man4 ,unfortunately1 the books that give any real information on these statistics are somehow not easily accessible4 ,this setting forth of facts in the documents of ,mr4 ,brooks1 shows incontrovertibly that ,communism in ,california is murderous in its intent towards the ,chinese4 ,it has put its intention into acts4 ,it has outraged unoffending men1 and struck them down relentlessly in the public street4 ,violence of that sort is comparatively safe4 ,the testimony of the ,chinaman cannot be taken in opposition to the white man4 ,the only chance a ,chinaman1 who is about to be murdered1 has to obtain justice1 is to secure a white witness to see it done4 ,the rougher element on the ,western coast is bound to annihilate the ,chinaman4 ,and all for no good reason4 ,they are not numerous4 ,there are only #ajj1jjj ,chinamen scattered up and down the coast4 ,they foment no disturbances4 ,there are only two offenses charged against them--grave offenses--and these are1 that they live economically1 and don't get drunk2 and so are able to work for lower wages than the masses of the ,irish and native-born population4 ,there is another power trying to solve this problem1 and that is the politicians4 ,they are no more successful than the ,communists4 ,they have secured the enactment of certain statutes1 but those statutes are often iniquitous4 ,the ,legislature of ,california has enacted what seems to me the most infamous laws that ever disgraced any statute-book4 ,the ,fugitive ,slave ,law was a ,golden ,rule in comparison4 ,let us see4 ,it is well known that the ,chinamen are laundry men4 ,they do their work in their shops1 and carry it out themselves4 ,forthwith1 the ,legislature of ,san ,francisco enacts that every laundryman who carries his work out with a horse shall pay a dollar a month2 but every laundryman who carries it out by hand shall pay ,,fifteen dollars a month4 ,the ,chinese are gregarious4 ,they crowd together in tenement-houses1 from which people of other nationalities are excluded4 ,by ,section ,second of an ,act approved ,april #c1 #ahgf1 by the ,legislature of ,california1 it is provided that 8,any person or persons found sleeping or lodging1 or who hires or uses for the purpose of sleeping1 any room or apartment which contains less than #ejj cubic feet of space in the clear1 for each person so occupying such room or apartment1 shall be deemed guilty of misdemeanor1 and shall1 upon conviction1 be punished by a fine of not less than ten1 or more than fifty dollars1 or by both such fine and imprisonment40 ,that is1 says ,mr4 ,brooks1 as a penalty for lodging in rooms containing less than #ejj cubic feet of space1 they are to be thrust into prison cells of less than one-fifth the dimension4 ,certainly 8,for ways that are dark1 and tricks that are vain1 ,the heathen ,chinee is ,,not peculiar40 ,mr4 ,luttrell moved in ,congress that the steamboat bills be so amended as to forbid the employment of a ,chinaman in any capacity whatsoever4 ,congressman ,shelley1 of ,alabama1 introduced a bill providing that all ,chinamen coming to the ,united ,states1 except officially1 be taxed #bej per capita1 or serve five years in the penitentiary4 ,the ,chinese in ,california are made to pay more than #db1jjj school taxes annually1 while their children are not admitted to the public schools1 neither are there other schools provided for them4 ,thirteen hundred ,chinamen asked the ,california ,legislature for school privileges for #c1jjj of their children1 seeking only such as are provided for those of ,african and ,indian descent4 ,their petition was immediately laid on the table1 and stigmatized as dangerous4 ,this is only a specimen of this class legislation on the ,pacific ,coast4 ,they are very ingenious there4 ,just as fast as one law is decided unconstitutional1 they have another4 ,communism crushes the ,chinese4 ,the politician says1 8,they sha'n't come here if we can prevent it by oppressive legislation40 ,as a protest against the unreasonableness of this course of procedure1 the testimony of ,postmaster-,general ,key is of special value4 ,in a recent conversation1 he gave the following as the result of his observations during his visit to the ,pacific ,coast3 8,the politicians10 said ,mr4 ,key1 8are almost to a man against the ,chinese1 and antagonize them bitterly4 ,the merchants1 the manufacturers1 the farmers1 and nearly the entire employing class1 are very fond of the ,chinese1 and prefer them to any other laborers4 ,they speak in the highest terms of the ,chinese2 they say that they are docile1 obedient1 obliging1 punctual1 hardworking1 and faithful2 they are exceedingly thrifty and economical2 they are temperate in their habits1 do not drink liquor of any kind1 eat very little meat1 and live almost entirely on rice4 ,it is wonderful to see how little a ,chinaman can live on4 ,their economy struck me as something marvellous4 ,large numbers of them sleep in a single ill-ventilated room2 they constantly violate the fundamental laws of health1 yet they are seemingly very healthy4 ,i was astonished to learn they had no hospital4 ,i was shown through the ,chinese ,quarter of ,san ,francisco by the ,mayor1 and saw everything in that locality2 but there are a number of places here in ,washington fully as bad1 if not worse1 than anything ,i saw in ,chinatown4 ,i also observed that the railroad companies employed a large number of ,chinamen1 and found them excellent workmen40 ,evidently1 the politicians are not competent to the settlement of the ,chinese question4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association takes hold of the matter in the right way4 ,it says3 ,let the ,chinese come and be treated as men4 ,let them have the gospel preached to them1 and be lifted into a civilization that is level with your own4 ,communism has not succeeded1 so far4 ,the politician has not succeeded4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association has shown itself able to grapple with the question4 ,they have got hold of the right end of the rope4 ,if they are encouraged by the churches of ,america1 they will solve this problem4 ,there appeared in the ,congregationalist1 some weeks ago1 an editorial of great merit1 in which this radical mistake was made3 it was a sort of apology for the ,chinese1 because they were so few in numbers4 ,it said they were decreasing instead of increasing4 ,why1 ,mr4 ,chairman1 look across the ocean and see that great nation1 covering one-tenth of the globe1 and holding one-third its population4 ,so crowded is it that millions 7even more than our entire population7 who never have a home upon land1 are born1 live and die floating upon rivers and canals4 ,a more industrious race is not2 neither can agriculture1 which still ranks far above any other employment1 be found anywhere else carried to such perfection of thoroughness4 ,there is no idleness among these millions4 ,the monstrous human ant-heap is astir4 ,they are also an educated people1 nimble in figures1 as well as in all kinds of labor4 ,there is but one written language for all the population1 which has been transmitted1 with even no dialectic changes1 for at least #b1ejj years4 ,it is a nation industrious and frugal4 ,we talk about the heathen ,chinese1 but we had better talk about the heathen ,anglo-,saxon4 ,what useful art is practised to-day that ,china has not had for centuries8 ,what we count the great discoveries of modern science1 may turn out not to be so modern after all4 ,i saw a statement made within ten days1 that it has been discovered that ,edison's phonograph was known in ,china two hundred years before ,edison was born4 ,china has a history--a record which cannot be ignored4 ,we do vastly ill when we talk about the 8heathen ,chinee40 ,their religion is something against which we set our faces2 but their character is worth commendation4 ,i was talking1 the other day1 with a gentleman who had passed the greater part of his life in ,china4 ,he said there was not an element in the ,japanese character that was not in the ,chinese1 and of the two1 he considers the ,chinese the more hopeful4 ,in dealing with the ,chinese1 we are not dealing with refuse material4 ,china is a great nation4 ,it has its place among the foremost of the earth4 ,it is a sad thing for this great nation of ours1 if it cannot endure the little leaven on the ,pacific ,coast4 ,do you suppose it will affect the great mass of ,christianity unfavorably8 ,over #cjj of the ,chinese have already been received as members of the ,protestant ,churches in ,california1 and #gjj are under ,christian instruction1 studying the doctrines of our faith1 while #a1jjj attend ,sunday-school1 and two young men are preparing for the ,christian ministry4 ,even those who do not come under the influence of such instruction can scarcely be said to be the worst people in the land4 ,in #ahge1 of the #g1fdc arrests for drunkenness1 not one was a ,chinaman2 of the #c1bfc paupers admitted to the alms-house1 only six were ,chinamen2 of #hc murderers hanged during the last year in the ,united ,states1 not one was a ,chinaman4 ,if any other race1 born or naturalized1 on this continent1 can show a similarly good record1 let them step to the front and declare it4 ,the truth is1 ,mr4 ,president1 we are only standing on the threshold of this great question4 ,i believe if you and ,i live to come to these meetings ten years hence1 less will be said about the blacks and more about the ,chinese4 ,we need to understand this great work now opening before us4 ,we ought to remove one source of prejudice against the ,chinese4 ,men say the ,chinese must go1 because their coming reduces their wages4 ,i happen to have a statement of wages in ,california for the past year1 clipped only a few months since from a ,san ,francisco paper3 ,carpenters1 from #c to #c4ej2 bricklayers1 #d to #e2 painters1 #c2 plasterers1 #c4ej2 hod-carriers1 #c2 stone-cutters1 #d2 machinists1 #c to #d2 common laborers1 #b2 house work in families1 per week1 #f to #g4 ,can we make a show equally in favor of the wages of the workingmen on this sun-rise side of the continent1 where the ,chinese are insignificant as a competing power8 ,the truth is1 all this cry about their taking the bread out of our children's mouths is simply nonsense4 ,but it is said there is another difficulty4 ,the ,irishman comes to this country1 and is assimilated4 ,the ,german1 also1 and is assimilated4 ,the ,chinaman comes1 and he alone is not assimilated4 ,why not8 ,first of all there is no provision for his naturalization1 if he desires it4 ,the sixth article of the ,burlingame ,treaty provides that 8,chinese subjects visiting or residing in the ,united ,states1 shall enjoy the same privileges1 immunities and exemptions in respect to travel or residence as may be enjoyed by the citizen-subjects of the most favored nation2 but nothing herein contained shall be held to confer naturalization upon the citizens of the ,united ,states in ,china1 nor upon subjects of ,china in the ,united ,states40 ,more than this1 there is a certain stress of public opinion1 which is weightier than treaty provisions4 ,the head of the ,chinese ,embassy in this country was confronted with this question2 8,why is it that your countrymen come here alone1 without any families80 ,he replied3 8,it is about as much as a ,chinaman can do to keep his head on his shoulders alone1 without bringing his family40 ,there is nothing in the nature of things to prevent the absorption of the ,mongolian into ,american citizenship4 ,it seems to be the peculiar office of this nation to assimilate every element4 ,it makes no difference what our estimate of a man is2 if he is a man he can1 by the power of the gospel1 be brought into oneness with us4 ,walk up and down the pavement of the mosque of ,st4 ,sophia1 and here and there you brush with your steps bits of gilded and colored glass that1 rude in shape and void of beauty1 seem only fit to be swept into a corner2 but lift your eyes to the seraphim that blaze in flaming mosaics on the ceiling1 and you see how the artist's skill has wrought just such rough fragments into forms of grandeur that awe the soul4 ,our ,american ,christianity gathers the best and the worst of the race forces of the world1 and is able1 by ,god's good help1 out of them to compact a nationality with which to face the world4 8,the ,chinese must go10 ,mr4 ,kearney says4 ,yes1 we accept that motto1 but we put our own meaning to it4 ,we say1 8the ,chinese must go0 and come1 whenever and wherever they please4 ,this ,association is called of ,god1 ,i believe1 to stand up and assert that1 as it has opportunity1 no effort shall be spared to give them place among the sanctified of the land4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,address ,,upon ,,the ,,african ,,mission4 ,,rev4 ,g4 ,d4 ,,pike4 ,,mr4 ,,president3--,in seconding the report respecting the ,mendi ,mission1 ,i beg leave to say1 that there are four points of interest we ought to consider4 #a4 ,one is the ,providential call of this ,association to ,tropical ,africa4 ,at the beginning of its existence1 as ,abraham heard the voice of the ,lord1 saying1 8,get thee out of thy country1 into a land ,i will shew thee10 so the fathers of this ,association heard the call of ,god and entered the ,dark ,continent1 anticipatory of those great events about to transpire4 ,in #ahdb1 when the ,mendi ,mission was established by the return of the ,amistad captives1 who had been freed from slavery in ,america1 the most important parts of ,central ,africa were either left blank on our maps1 or filled up with great deserts1 mountains of the moon1 and figures of lions and dragons4 ,it was known1 however1 that the ,mendi country was a great slave preserve1 from which ten thousand black people were sent annually into bondage4 ,the ,amistad ,committee at once pre-mpted a portion of that great and wonderful missionary field1 which is now so signally attracting the attention of the civilized world4 #b4 ,a second point of interest pertains to the land that has been shown us4 ,by turning to your maps1 you will discover that the back lot of the ,mendi ,mission extends eastwards #d1bjj miles1 on the parallel of about seven degrees north latitude1 over a fertile zone of tropical country4 ,mr4 ,stanley tells us the object of his journey was1 8,to flash a torch of light across the western half0 of this zone4 ,other explorers have contributed their light4 ,lieutenant ,burton1 in '#eg1 carried his torch as far as the ,tanganyika4 ,captain ,speke announced to the world about the same time that he had discovered a mighty inland sea1 surrounded on every side by the 8richest and pleasantest garden in the world20 and the ,victoria ,nyanza ,lake1 with ,mtesa's kingdom1 were added to our knowledge and wealth--alluring alike to the statesman1 merchant and missionary4 ,meanwhile ,david ,livingstone moved up from the southeast1 illumining the whole regions of the ,zambezi ,river--the ,nyassa1 ,bangweolo and ,tanganyika ,lakes--proceeding as far as ,nyangwe on the unknown ,lualaba--scattering through all his reports those seed thoughts respecting ,christian missions1 that have developed into desires to carry the light of life to the 8real heathen0 in those latitudes4 ,then1 ,sir ,samuel ,baker called the attention of the world afresh to ancient ,ethiopia1 with one hundred and forty millions of acres of the richest land in the world2 covered with millions of people1 herds of cattle1 and a varied and luxurious vegetation4 ,discovering also the ,albert ,nyanza ,lake1 embosomed amidst mountain ranges--the abodes of frost and snow--and hardy1 warlike tribes4 ,dr4 ,schweinfurth also penetrated far into the back lot of our mission2 flashing his chemical and botanical light1 revealing most beautiful flora--every variety of fauna and fish--to say nothing of pigmies and giants4 ,neither has ,commander ,cameron contributed the least by his journey across the ,continent from ,east to ,west4 ,the light given us by these seven explorers is woven into a rainbow of promise1 which spans those unknown slave preserves of former generations--beautiful as 8,canaan's fair and happy land0 to the ,father of the faithful4 ,if you start from our ,mendi ,mission and proceed a few hundred miles southeast1 you enter the ,west ,african gold fields in ,ashantee land1 where the native rulers are covered with golden ornaments1 carrying gold-hilted swords1 and attended by hundreds of followers1 wearing gold plates upon their breasts1 with royal cooks serving their masters with golden spoons4 ,if you journey still farther1 to one degree of ,north latitude on the ,livingstone1 you reach a country where they build their temples of ivory1 and construct their boats with accommodations for eighty oarsmen1 and fight their battles with vast armies4 ,if you keep straight on1 you reach ,munza's kingdom1 8enriched by such beauties as might be worthy of ,paradise40 ,still further1 you see the arena of the missionary labors of ,rev4 ,chas4 ,new2 where high mountains rise one above another until they are lost in clouds--mountains with beautiful slopes1 covered with patches of cultivated land1 and irrigated by brooks1 streams and torrents1 which tumble and splash on all sides4 ,meanwhile1 you would have journeyed over countries six thousand feet above the level of the sea with an equable climate1 and other favorable conditions1 such as led ,captain ,speke to prophecy that in course of time 8one of the greatest nations on earth0 would be built up in the heart of ,africa4 #c4 ,but there is another point of quite as much interest to us4 ,i refer to the inspirations that have been kindled in the hearts of ,christians in ,africa's behalf2 the efforts that have been put forth since our ,mission was established for reclaiming ,africa4 ,here let me refer briefly to parallel ,providences4 ,there are three of these which are very striking3 7#a7 ,the revelations to us of the fertility1 resources and people of the vast interior of ,central ,africa2 7#b7 ,the abolition of ,american slavery2 7#c7 ,the eagerness of people of ,african descent for education at the ,south1 coupled with a great desire to emigrate to ,africa 7,it is probable that not less than half a million black people in ,america have signified their desire to go to ,africa within the last twelve months74 ,to this must be added the desire manifested by ,christians of our own race1 everywhere to follow up these providences with missionary endeavors4 ,these have been put forth by the ,english1 ,scotch1 ,german and ,american2 skirting the borders of ,equatorial ,africa1 both on the ,east and ,west ,coast2 resulting in the conversion of thousands of heathen during the past twenty-five years4 ,since the close of our war1 and more especially during the past five years1 great enthusiasm has been manifested for what are termed ,central ,african ,missions--missions in the lake regions upon the highlands of the interior4 ,the ,scotch and ,english have planted their stations on the ,nyassa ,lake4 ,the ,london ,missionary ,society had1 at last reports1 a corps of missions1 heading towards the ,tanganyika1 while the ,church ,missionary ,society has occupied ,mtesa's kingdom1 in ,uganda1 on the shores of the ,victoria ,nyanza1 and the ,baptists of ,great ,britain are searching for a station on the ,livingstone ,river4 ,the fertile country thus being entered1 extends for four thousand miles from east to west1 in some latitudes1 and three thousand from north to south1 and probably contains a hundred million people4 ,in the providence of ,god1 the ,american ,missionary ,association is on that ground4 ,it is the one missionary society of our denomination that sustains missions there4 ,we believe we have an inheritance in that country1 and a great destiny in connection with its redemption4 ,we have been true to the negro from the beginning1 seeking to do right in his behalf1 without fear or favor4 ,i think it is not too much to assert that heaven believes in this ,association2 that ,god created it1 and will use it for great things in ,africa4 ,good men have believed in it4 ,mr4 ,avery gave to it property valued at #ajj1jjj1 for ,african ,missions4 ,others1 we trust1 will follow his example2 for we suspect the negro was right when his attentive ear caught the accents which he wove into his song3 8,the ,lord said to ,gabriel3 ,take down the silver trumpet1 ,loud as the seven thunders6 ,wake the sleeping nations-- ,you will see the ,christian rising40 ,we are truly seeing the ,christian rising--as 8the trumpet sounds it in our souls0--that ,god has come to reclaim ,africa4 #d4 ,the fourth point of interest relates to what we have been trying to do about it4 ,the story of the departure of our colored missionaries has been sufficiently told4 ,the result of their first year's efforts has been spread before you4 ,let me give you1 in their own language1 their convictions as to the best missions for ,africa4 ,mr4 ,a4 ,e4 ,white--a ,hampton student1 now at ,avery ,station--writes3 8,you would like to know what ,i think about colored missionaries4 ,my firm belief is that they can do more than any other missionaries under the sun4 ,the natives look upon a white person as unnatural1 and think he is above them in every way1 and that ,god made him so4 ,they also think it is of no use for them to try to do the things they see the white man do4 ,but1 on the other hand1 when they see a colored man do anything1 they think if he can do it1 they can do it themselves4 ,do not think ,i say this because ,i am a colored man4 ,i say it because ,i know it is true40 ,mr4 ,albert ,miller1 who went out from the ,fisk ,university1 writes3 8,if ,africa is to be evangelized1 as ,i believe it will be1 it must be done through the children of the summer and sunny clime1 educated and ,christianized in the ,south4 ,you in ,america can't see this as plainly as one who mingles with this people1 and has all chances to investigate in regard to this matter40 ,it gives us pleasure to state that the success of our colored band beyond the great waters1 warrants as strong expressions as those ,i have quoted4 ,a letter from ,rev4 ,floyd ,snelson1 dated ,west ,africa1 ,september #acth1 contains the following3 8,the #bdth of this month will make one year since we left ,new ,york4 ,result of work1 three stations are opened1 nearly three hundred children have been enrolled in the day schools1 and about the same number1 old and young1 in ,sabbath-schools4 ,from among these numbers1 twenty-four have given their hearts to ,christ and united with the ,church1 and are endeavoring to lead ,christian lives4 ,the object of the missionary is to go forward with the work into the interior4 ,there are many places which might be opened to the saving of souls1 if the money and men were furnished40 ,i repeat1 brethren1 we had an early call to our ,african field4 ,god has spanned ,his bow of light and promise over it4 ,he has kindled inspirations in our hearts concerning it4 ,he has prospered the freedmen who have gone forth for its redemption4 ,surely we have a right to believe 8the great ,admiral1 who knows the way10 has taken our ship in tow1 and1 as the ,jubilees sing1 8,the old ,ark is a movering1 a movering1 a movering2 ,the old ,ark is movering1 a movering along40 ,shall we remember our birthright1 and enter more fully upon our inheritance8 ,shall we go up1 with the other great missionary societies1 to possess this land8 ,shall we return over the sea1 with songs and rejoicing1 those sable sons and daughters1 whose fathers came with chains and groans to our ,american shore8 ,notwithstanding our great work at the ,south1 ,i verily believe this to be our greatest1 and that the mighty ,ruler of all events will crown our efforts in this direction with magnificent success4 ,therefore1 ,mr4 ,president1 ,i most heartily second this ,report4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,annual ,,meeting4 ,we have given1 as usual1 in the ,,missionary next following our ,annual ,meeting1 a large part of our increased space to the ,report of the ,executive ,committee1 the minutes of the meeting1 and the addresses made on that occasion4 ,here we need only to add a few general observations on the special features of the three days at ,taunton4 ,first of all1 the attendance was gratifying both as to numbers and quality4 ,the earlier sessions drew together more people than are ordinarily present at the start2 and1 despite the two rainy days which followed1 the numbers increased to the end4 ,the evening meetings were crowded1 and1 had the weather been fine1 would have doubtless overflowed1 so as to have made the opening of a second church necessary4 ,it was a representative gathering1 too1 of ministers1 well known for their active interest in all good works1 and of substantial laymen from ,massachusetts and the coasts beyond4 ,we should be glad if1 more and more1 the men who contribute either largely or statedly to our work1 would come to these assemblies1 and question the methods of our work and of our administration of their gifts4 ,the executive officers of the ,association desire to maintain relations of perfect frankness with those whose trustees they are1 are glad to answer all inquiries1 and to submit to all intelligent criticism1 to meet with the special committees when requested1 and to give all possible information2--sure that1 as in this case1 such detailed knowledge of their ways and works will only furnish a better basis for the confidence1 so largely given1 of the churches and the friends of the lowly4 ,we need not repeat here what is fully set forth in the preceding pages--the reports of the year's work and of its indorsement by the constituency of the ,association4 ,rather we will confine ourselves to the things which do not there appear4 ,the sermon1 on the first evening1 by ,rev4 ,s4 ,e4 ,herrick1 ,d4 ,d41 was full of grand thoughts1 clothed in words of forceful grace1 from the text3 8,but ye are a chosen generation1 a royal priesthood1 an holy nation1 a peculiar people2 that ye should shew forth the praises of ,him who hath called you out of darkness into ,his marvellous light40--#a4 ,peter1 ii1 #i4 ,three thoughts were deduced from those words set forth1 and with ample illustration3 7#a7 ,god has a people in the world1 not marked by geographical or race lines1 and yet one people and one nation1 who are such through their relation to ,god by ,jesus ,christ2 7#b7 ,this people has undergone a marvellous transformation from darkness into ,his light2 7#c7 ,it is intrusted with a solemn priestly function1 a sacrificial work1 for the redemption of men4 ,the special priestly work of ,god's people in this land was set forth1 and the historic fact that1 having failed to fulfill it1 they were made to suffer on the altar of sacrifice1 and that unless they should meet the obligations of their office now1 they must again be called to an account4 ,five papers of great value were read during the meetings4 ,these have been printed in full in the supplement to the ,boston ,traveller1 and largely circulated among our friends4 #a4 8,the ,present ,time all-important in the salvation of our ,country10 by ,rev4 ,stacy ,fowler1 ,d4,d4 ,the paper showed how this was a critical time in our history as a nation2 the great need1 a revival of 8the ,american spirit10 especially in these three respects--the nation's faith in ,god1 the purity of the family1 and the elevation of the lowly4 ,the ,church must do the work4 ,incidentally1 a strong argument was made to show the deteriorating tendency of the amalgamation of races1 sustained by the testimony of ,prof4 ,lewis ,agassiz4 #b4 8,the ,denominational ,polity of the ,american ,missionary ,association10 by ,rev4 ,g4 ,l4 ,walker1 ,d4 ,d4 ,the real question is1 shall we only seek to ,christianize1 or shall we also try to ,congregationalize the ,freedmen8 ,the paper discussed the nature of ,congregationalism1 and the prevalent characteristics of the colored race2 and1 from the comparison1 drew conclusions not very favorable to the prospects of denominational success1 yet by no means discrediting what has already been accomplished in that direction1 or discouraging further efforts4 #c4 8,america's ,opportunity the ,world's ,salvation10 by ,rev4 ,c4 ,l4 ,woodworth4 ,the end of ,christian work is to spread the saving knowledge of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,this needs human activities1 directed with strategic wisdom and sanctified energy4 ,each nation has its peculiar work3 ,england to send forth ,christian and civilizing agencies through her widely scattered colonies2 ,america to ,christianize the peoples from other lands who come to her shores2 and to send back1 through them1 the ,gospel of ,christian civilization to their benighted countrymen4 #d4 8,a ,revival of ,righteousness toward the ,despised ,races of ,america10 by ,rev4 ,ebenezer ,cutler1 ,d4 ,d4 ,that they are despised is the main indictment which the paper details at length4 ,this unrighteousness prejudices our ,christian work1 restrains the heartiness of many1 even1 who are engaged in it1 and hinders the blessing of ,god on our labors4 ,this revival must begin by reflection1 leading to repentance2 must go on to the repeal of unjust and the execution of just laws1 to a righteous public sentiment1 and such atonement as can be made for past wrongs4 #e4 8,the ,work of ,half a ,generation among the ,freedmen10 by ,secretary ,strieby1 in which the progress since emancipation was traced1 supported by much important testimony1 in material1 educational and religious prosperity4 ,we have given these brief analyses only to serve as an index to the contents of these papers1 and not at all as a substitute for their perusal4 ,still less would it be possible to make good to our readers the misfortune of their absence from this inspiring gathering4 ,we are confident that we shall feel the impulse of it through the year4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we are close upon the threshold of a new year4 ,the churches1 many of them1 at this time1 are making up their schedules of benevolence for #ahgi4 ,do not forget1 we pray you1 to give a good place to the ,association1 whose work is among the least of these1 the ,master's brethren1 in our own land4 ,do not forget1 you who apportion your weekly contributions among the various fields1 to give its due share1 as ,god shall give you light1 to this peculiar work which presses its claims by so many sacred pleas1 and on the timely cultivation of which depend so largely the permanence and purity of the spring itself4 ,we would not have you neglect ,judea1 and ,samaria1 nor even the uttermost parts of the earth1 but only beseech you1 earnestly and tearfully1 ,don't forget ,jerusalem4 99 99 99 99 99 ,several thousand dollars of the money pledged for the reduction of our debt1 is made conditional upon our paying up the full amount by the end of this year4 ,we beg our friends to bear this fact in mind1 as a spur to make their thoughts quicker1 and their hands obey their generous promptings without delay4 ,we cannot afford to lose this offered help1 and you cannot afford to have us4 ,the impetus given at the ,annual ,meeting to this debt-destroying work is not abated2 our friends are reminding us of their interest daily2 some of those who were present at the meeting are pressing it1 on their own account1 in the ,states from which they came4 ,how soon will you enable us to make our proclamation of emancipation from this bondage8 99 99 99 99 99 ,our readers will see that we have endeavored1 in this number of the ,,missionary1 to present them with the doings and the sayings of the ,annual ,meeting not already put into print and circulation4 ,the valuable and stirring addresses by ,rev4 ,messrs4 ,atwood1 ,heywood and ,pike1 we have been able to get in form already4 ,other equally thoughtful and forcible addresses1 though reported1 have not yet come to us in such shape that we can use them immediately4 ,what you find here is what you did not find in the ,supplement to the ,traveller4 ,we beg you1 then1 to 8read1 mark1 learn and inwardly digest40 99 99 99 99 99 ,a new cartridge1 ,no4 #e1 of the series of pamphlets begun last year1 is ready for distribution1 and contains ,secretary ,strieby's review of half a generation of work among the ,freedmen4 ,as a collation of facts and testimony1 we commend it as furnishing to thoughtful men the means of forming their own opinions on the success of past labors1 and on the hopefulness and the duty of pressing on the good work already begun patiently to the desired end4 99 99 99 99 99 ,three ,communion ,sets are needed in another column1 for means to erect cheap cottages for the accommodation of students4 ,the small sum needed for each cottage will enable many of our readers to accomplish a definite and useful object1 who cannot undertake larger enterprises4 ,we indorse most heartily the appeal4 99 99 99 99 99 ,miss ,rebecca ,tyler ,bacon1 daughter of ,rev4 ,leonard ,bacon1 ,d4,d41 died at ,new ,haven1 and spirit will remain while that institution stands4 ,she was a power for good in her native city1 where her counsel and direction were given to many public and private charities1 with untiring larger numbers than for several years4 ,our graduates seem to be doing much toward recommending the school4 ,the first ,sabbath afternoon of each new school-year is given up to reports from our students1 who have been teaching through our summer vacation of three months4 ,nothing in all our school work interests me so much as these reports4 ,the only alloy in my enjoyment is that thousands of ,northern friends1 whose hearts would be equally cheered by them1 cannot enjoy them too4 ,those who attend meetings of the ,a4 ,b4 ,c4 ,f4 ,m41 and are thrilled with the reports of returned missionaries1 know something of our pleasure4 ,yet1 ,i suspect ours is greater1 for these missionaries are of our own training1 many of them led to ,jesus in our own school1 and the fields reported are the benighted spots of our native land4 ,i will copy a few jottings1 hastily taken at the time4 ,the first one says3 8,i have the same old story to report1 except a few new things4 ,have taught in ,monroe ,co4 for four summers4 ,the first year no white people visited the school2 the second two came2 the third year four2 this year thirty or forty4 ,all think highly of ,atlanta ,university1 and the ,commissioner begged me to supply the county with teachers from this school4 ,people are not willing to sell land4 ,colored people doing well as they can2 anxious to get up higher and want teachers to help them up40 ,another says3 8,i had a half hour of ,bible study each morning4 ,devoted part of ,friday afternoons to talks against tobacco and whiskey4 ,all the ,sunday-school material the people had was a catechism and some papers left locked up by the last ,atlanta teacher and not used since4 ,only four colored people own land4 ,landowners seem to ask such a price as they know never can be paid4 ,some bargain for land1 and then pay enormous interest4 ,one man pays one hundred and fifty dollars a year interest--all he can save4 ,i advised them to save their money till they got enough to pay cash for their land4 ,met several white young men1 professing ,christians1 and had pleasant talks with them4 ,closed school a little before it was time to return1 and picked cotton in the meantime40 ,one of our girls1 who graduates this year1 says3 8,the people seem poorer than last year2 crops failed4 ,the land is poor1 and they pay high rent for it4 ,but the children are advancing in knowledge each year4 ,the school is well classified4 ,had an exhibition at close4 ,did not spend much time on it1 but had them learn their parts well4 ,several white visitors attended it4 ,one of the gentlemen talked well to the people on morals4 ,he went around and told the people ,i was very smart4 ,i was told another one said ,i could read and write better than any white woman in the county40 ,another girl said3 8,the white people did not want teachers from ,atlanta1 because they took the money out of the county4 ,they kept me1 however1 and wanted the people to watch me4 ,when ,i closed they urged me to stay till ,christmas40 ,one of our youngest teachers said3 8,i reached the place in which ,i was to teach on #8,big ,meeting' day1 and the people were very angry to see me1 for a daughter of the most prominent colored man of the place had been teaching there some years1 and wished to continue4 ,she was very incompetent1 and the ,commissioner had sent for me4 ,the father electioneered for his daughter at the #8big meeting1' told them she would wait on them for their pay2 she would be there if there was but one scholar2 she'd always look after her chickens1 etc42 but the ,commissioner said to them3 #8,this young man can write the best hand in the county1 and you'd better take him4' ,so1 after offering to teach for a very little from the patrons1 ,i got the school4 ,a white man had given the people some land if they would build a church4 ,they did so1 but used it during the week for school4 ,this made the donor of the land angry1 as he did not wish them to have a school4 ,the year before he and his wife went to the building1 drove off the teacher1 and then he nailed up the door on the inside1 while his wife stood on guard with his gun4 ,this summer1 when my school was nearly through1 the building was burned4 ,it was very plain who did it4 ,so1 for the little while1 we all went to a cotton-gin house4 ,we laid some shingles down for a floor1 and hauled some logs in for seats4 ,a paper laid over the gin served for my desk4 ,we had our closing exercises under a bush arbor4 ,one day ,i asked the children1 #8,how many drink whiskey8' ,twenty or thirty held up their hands and said #8pa and ma drink it1 and give it to me4'0 ,another says3 8,i see great improvement in old people and children4 ,good many own land and are still buying4 ,one man owns two hundred acres4 ,another bought some land for eight hundred dollars1 and paid half last year1 and is in a fair way to pay the rest this year4 ,i did not ask a boy or girl to quit whiskey or tobacco1 but ,i preached temperance by example and quiet conversation4 ,there is harmony between the races4 ,they visit each other's churches4 ,the bell of a white church tolled for a colored woman4 ,this year ,i had my first exhibition1 because ,i thought they better learn to read and write first1 then exhibit after they had something to show4 ,prepared the children after school4 ,all the white people attended40 ,another said3 8,the morals of the people are fearful4 ,they don't expect teachers to teach morality4 ,every example set before our people is one that has been contaminated by slavery4 ,if ,i see any one making for this place ,i feel something will be done for him4 ,every ,atlanta student ,i see1 ,i feel1 #8,there goes one that will liberate our people from the monster1 ,immorality4' ,asked the barkeeper if he sold much to ministers and church members4 ,he replied1 #8,most who buy are church members4' ,then he said1 #8,do you see that man with a big locket on his watch chain8 ,he owes me six dollars for whiskey4' ,he was the prominent minister of the place4 ,still there is much progress in temperance4 ,there is an increasing kindly feeling between the rich and poor4 ,i heard the editor of the ,macon ,telegraph talk to the colored people4 ,he said the ,atlanta ,university was doing more for the ,state than the white ,state ,university at ,athens1 and that the recitations were better40 ,another1 whose health would not allow him to teach1 and who stayed here at the ,home to work on the farm1 said3 8,above all1 we want ,god with us all the time1 from this day on4 ,once1 during the summer1 ,i had for a moment such a conception of ,god1 that ,i felt if it continued five minutes ,i could not live40 ,these words fell upon my ears like the experiences of a ,finney1 because they were from one who has no patience with 8dream religion10 and whose godly life here for six years has been a constant inspiration to us4 ,another said3 8,people are roused to the subject of education4 ,children complain if kept at home4 ,the people can buy land easily4 ,treated well by white men4 ,most of the whiskey drunk is by white people4 ,every man in the county knows of ,atlanta ,university4 ,at the closing exercises1 a man begged all to save money enough to go up to the ,college ,commencement4 ,he'd been once1 and should go next year1 if he had to walk40 ,all told of the ,sunday-school work2 some gave experiences in begging money1 hauling lumber1 and putting up school and church buildings1 and most closed by saying1 8,i hope ,i did some good40 ,one sweet girl said it in this way3 8,i left the results with the ,great ,reaper1 hoping in due time ,he will gather ,his sheaves40 ,these reports help much in removing prejudices and narrow1 one-sided views of the ,south4 ,while one sees the people retrograding and the whites overbearing1 another has a bright view on the other side4 ,this great number and variety of yearly reports impress us most1 however1 with the magnitude of our work1 and the great need we have of your prayers1 that this may be a pure fountain whom whence healing streams only shall flow4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,tennessee4 ,woman's ,work ,among son ,john ,quincy ,adams ,anderson attends school two weeks out of four1 he will 8learn a heap10 and be ready to graduate in a year or two4 ,however1 some of the children do make good progress at school2 but the home influence is so degrading that the necessity of missionary work among the mothers is felt more and more1 as we see more of their homes4 ,many are too poor to send their children to school at all2 consequently they have no opportunity of becoming better4 ,in my daily visits from house to house ,i found them in a wretched condition1 filth and vermin reigning supreme4 ,often1 on entering these abodes1 my sensibilities were so shocked that ,i could not speak at first--dogs1 cats1 chickens and children clamoring for the hoe cake in the ashes or the unleavened dough baking on the stove-cover1 which1 when done1 is broken and handed around to each1 sometimes with the addition of a dripping bit of bacon4 ,in many of these homes the table is never set1 the entire furniture consisting of a bed1 two chairs1 a trunk1 box1 cupboard1 bundle of rags and a poor stove1 if there is no fireplace4 ,they sometimes own the board shanties in which they live1 and rent the ground they stand on2 and when they wish to move1 they pull down the shanty1 move it to the new place1 and put it up again4 ,i was usually received kindly2 by some enthusiastically4 ,one old ex-slave1 learning the nature of my errand at her house1 said1 raising her hands above her turbaned head1 8,oh1 bless the ,lord6 ,thank the ,lord6 for ,he has heard the prayer of ,his downtrodden people1 and put it into the hearts of ,his dear children in the ,north to send some one to instruct us4 ,my blessed baby1 come as often as you can1 and read to ,aunt ,hettie1 for she is an ole ,etheopum1 and don't know nothing40 ,after ,i left1 she rushed around to her neighbors1 saying1 8,bless the ,lord6 for ,he has heard our prayer1 and sent an angel right down from heaven to instruct us1 and she has been to my house this evenin'40 ,they were usually glad--many were anxious--to hear the ,bible read1 some insisting on paying me1 saying1 8,do take it4 ,we wants you to come often1 for we don't hear anything like it anywhere else40 ,one woman1 wishing1 as she said1 to do something for the ,lord1 and having no money1 sent me a nice warm dinner4 ,they are very liberal1 giving as long as they have a nickel1 whether they rightly own it or not4 ,some who were suspicious said1 8,never heerd tell of white lady going to humble colo'd cabin to read the ,bible4 ,look like it's mighty queer40 ,these suspicions had to be overcome in various ways4 ,often1 by attending the sick ones1 the good will of the neighbors would be secured4 ,one poor creature1 who had not been washed in six months1 and was almost dead1 after ,i had bathed her and put on her clean clothes--furnished by the good ,northern friends--thanked me and said1 8,thank the ,lord6 when we get home to heaven1 we will all have on clean clothes40 ,her last days of suffering were thus made more comfortable4 ,i went in often1 as she loved to hear the ,bible read1 and singing4 ,but a few weeks later1 ,i went in one morning1 and found her poor remains stretched out on a rough board1 resting on two chairs4 ,thus she lay in state1 in her winding-sheet4 ,a plate1 placed on her crossed hands1 with its mute appeal for money to bury her1 told how poor they were4 ,one day a very black woman met me on the street and said1 8,how d'y'1 ,miss4 ,you don't know me2 but ,i knows you1 for you is the one what visits the sick2 and ,i heard you read the ,bible1 and ,i wants ye to read it to me4 ,we all loves ye1 and we all says1 #8,if any one is gwine right up to heaven1 it is you4'0 ,i often found the best way to reach the mother was through her children4 ,by giving them little presents1 they would become fond of me4 ,then the mother1 who was proud of them1 would say1 8,i wants my children to be better than me1 but don't know how to make them so4 ,i whips them a heap1 but they is bad all the time40 ,after convincing one mother that she was teaching her children to lie by her daily example1 she said1 8,sure enough6 ,never thought of that afore4 ,i alus wondered why my children would lie so1 'cause ,i alus tells 'em not to4 ,now1 ,miss1 you come often1 and teach me2 ,i needs it much as any one4 ,how can we be expected to do better8 ,no one we go with does any better2 and in ole slave times1 if master saw us with a book1 he would #8slap our jaws2' so we cannot read to find out better40 ,another said1 8,this is the first work ,i have seen that looked like really making our homes better40 ,finding the mothers and daughters knew but little about sewing1 an industrial school was started1 where they met once a week1 and were taught how to cut1 fit and make garments4 ,the material for this school was furnished by the good people of ,romeo4 ,a small sum was charged for each garment1 when finished1 and used to purchase more material4 ,also a small price was charged for a few of the more valuable garments sent in boxes1 the persons gladly paying the small sum1 which was used to procure medicine and other comforts for the sick ones4 ,i also added something to this fund by giving lessons to some who were able and willing to pay for the instruction4 ,sunday was my most busy day2 besides attending church and ,sabbath-school1 ,i went out to read the ,bible to those who were not at home during the week4 ,i seemed to find no rest days2 indeed1 there was so much for one pair of hands to do1 that many times ,i could not sleep as much as needed4 ,another meeting was held weekly4 ,i gave ,bible readings on those subjects which were of the most interest and importance to mothers1 after which we had a prayer-meeting1 which was often very interesting4 ,near the end of the year1 a temperance movement was started in our church and ,sabbath-school2 many signed the pledge1 among whom were about thirty from my class4 ,the colored people are very intemperate1 and nearly all the women use snuff and tobacco4 ,one1 who was complaining of her poverty1 upon being told she could ill afford to use snuff and tobacco1 said she only paid ten cents a box1 and was astonished to find that in a year it amounted to half as much as her rent4 ,she seemed to try to live an honest ,christian life1 and before ,i left had given up all her bad habits1 and was very proud and happy4 ,although these people are naturally religious1 still their religion consists in going to meeting1 where they sing1 pray1 and relate imaginary experiences1 and get wrought up to such a pitch that they scream1 roll on the floor1 and often remain until the small hours of the night4 ,they go home1 thinking they are very holy1 but have no idea of showing it by a well-ordered life2 on the contrary1 they continue to live with unlawful companions1 steal and lie with impunity2 in fact1 in many respects1 they will compare with their heathen forefathers1 from whom they have inherited their superstitions and forms of worship4 ,the bonds of slavery have prevented them from becoming enlightened4 ,however1 ,i am glad to say there are some grand exceptions to this dark picture2 some noble ,christians1 a few who have good homes4 ,among these1 the good accomplished by the mission-school and the little ,congregational church1 sustained by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 can be seen4 ,the pastor1 ,mr4 ,mallory1 allows no wife whipping in his church1 and he has caused the large number of those who were living together unlawfully to be married4 ,indeed1 his church will compare favorably with white churches of the ,north4 ,these things show the dawning of day to these benighted people1 and give us great encouragement to proceed with our work4 ,but the mass are worse than tongue can tell or pen portray4 ,i feel that in my description the half of woe and degradation has not been told4 ,the ,lord was with me in this work1 and was a present help in every time of need4 ,many mornings ,i would start out with a heavy heart1 for it would seem that my efforts to do good were almost in vain2 but trusting alone in ,jesus1 ,i would go forward4 ,just then the ,lord would show me that some one was becoming better1 and ,i would return at evening upbraiding myself for my want of faith1 and reminded of that ,scripture which says1 8,he that goeth forth1 and weepeth1 bearing precious seed1 shall doubtless come again with rejoicing1 bringing his sheaves with him40 ,it was a precious privilege to comfort these broken-hearted ones with ,his words1 of whom it was said3 8,never man spake like this ,man40 ,the ,bible is the only book the colored people have any confidence in4 ,a sick man1 whom ,i visited1 said he would like to hear the ,bible read through2 he was not a ,christian4 ,for some time he seemed but little interested2 but one day he greeted me with a smile1 saying3 8,i can trust the ,lord now1 and it is all that ,bible-reading4 ,many have talked to me before1 but ,i never thought of what they said2 but ,i could not forget these words from the ,bible1 and ,i studied about it all the time1 and last week1 after you left me1 ,i just did as the ,bible said3 gave up all1 and trusted ,jesus4 ,i am ready to go now1 and am not afraid40 ,when the time drew near for me to return ,north1 the women said3 8,what will we do without you8 ,who will visit us when sick1 and read comforting words from the ,bible8 ,and who will teach us how to train up our children8 ,now that we have had some one to do these things for us1 we feel as if we could not get along without you40 ,and many were the expressions of gratitude towards those dear ladies in the ,north1 who had sent them a missionary1 and many the prayers offered in their behalf4 ,there were many signs of encouragement1 though1 no doubt1 much seed that was sown will not spring up at once1 but in the future will bear precious fruit1 for the ,lord will not permit ,his word to return unto ,him void4 ,this has been the happiest year of my life1 for this work has its own reward1 both to the missionary and those who send her1 which is more valuable than silver or gold4 ,i sometimes think the angels might almost envy us in this work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,north ,,carolina4 ,students ,want to 8,batch0--,who ,will ,help8 ,,rev4 ,,alfred ,,connett1 within two miles of the school1 and that is engaged by two students who have not yet returned4 ,small buildings1 say #abbj1 one story1 two rooms1 can be built for about #ajj each1 and land bought at #f to #aj per acre1 possibly #bj for small tracts4 ,by making some provision of this kind to accommodate students1 we should at once draw in ten to twenty students1 and these the very ones we most need to reach3 namely1 those who are preparing to teach1 and to preach4 ,thus1 the school would become more widely and more permanently useful4 ,these buildings are needed immediately1 or part of them4 ,it is difficult1 if not impossible1 with their limited means1 for the students to obtain board1 with suitable accommodations4 ,the white people do not wish to take in boarders1 unless at high figures1 and the colored people have1 usually1 but one room in their log houses4 ,cannot some church1 individual1 or individuals1 do a work for ,christ in this way8 ,if this1 or something similar is fifty-six years old2 was born in ,chatham ,co41 ,n4 ,c42 was a slave forty-three years1 sixteen years in ,north ,carolina and twenty seven in ,alabama4 ,i have lived in this county forty years4 ,my young master in ,north ,carolina was four years older than myself2 he had nine slaves1 and ,i was the only male4 ,he died just before ,i was sixteen4 ,when ,i was thirteen ,i went to learn the carpenter's trade4 ,i was taken from my mother and sent away to nurse children when ,i was six4 ,i served three years at the carpenter's bench and at that time my master died1 and ,i had to be sold to pay his debts4 ,on the day appointed for the sale ,i went fourteen miles on foot1 and alone1 to the place where ,i was to be sold4 ,on my way ,i tried to lay some plan to run away4 ,a white woman said she would help me1 and told me to go into a certain swamp and she would feed me and help me away1 but ,i was afraid of the dogs and the men that would catch me4 ,no one can tell my feelings on my way to the sale1 but ,i knew ,i had to go4 ,at the place of sale were #ejj people come together to see me sold1 and to buy me4 ,i was the only one to be sold4 ,i was on the block three hours while the men were bidding for me4 ,five of these men were speculators1 and the rest were mostly people that lived in that region4 ,while they were selling me there was a good deal of brandy drunk1 and they offered me some as ,i was very tired standing2 and ,i said1 8,no1 sir1 ,i have sorrow enough on me now without drinking that40 ,i was finally knocked off to a very bad man for #a1ghj4 ,this man lived about thirteen miles from my old home1 and when ,i knew that he was my master ,i burst into tears1 heart-broken4 ,the overseer took me behind the store and tried to stop me from crying1 but ,i could not stop4 ,at last1 my new master said if any one would give for me as much as he had1 he might have me1 and a man from ,alabama1 who was out to ,north ,carolina on a visit1 said he would1 and so ,i sold again to this man from ,alabama1 and after three months ,i was taken away from all my friends away down to ,alabama4 ,my new master proved to be a good man1 a member of the ,baptist ,church1 and ,i lived with him twenty-seven years until emancipation4 ,one thing ,i forgot to tell you1 and it made a deep impression on my mind3 at the time ,i was being sold in ,north ,carolina1 a man in the crowd cried out with a loud voice1 8,hell will boil and overflow at such work as this40 ,i never can forget that expression4 ,i was set free by two wills2 the first one was burned1 and so ,i was kept in slavery4 ,once1 after ,i had been absent from home some time1 my mistress1 on my return1 came rushing out to the gate and crying with a loud voice1 8,oh1 ,ambrose1 ,ambrose6 ,i had rather live in the smokiest cabin on the place1 and had your master's will done1 than to be in the king's palace10 but the will was burned and so it could not be done4 ,the other will that set me free was made ten years before emancipation2 but emancipation came before my master died1 and so his will did me no good4 ,during all my slave life ,i never lost sight of freedom4 ,it was always on my heart2 it came to me like a solemn thought1 and often circumstances much stimulated the desire to be free and raised great expectation of it4 ,we slaves all knew when an ,abolitionist got into ,congress4 ,we knew it when there was just one there1 and we watched it all the way until there was a majority there4 ,i don't know hardly how we got the knowledge1 but we always knew4 ,we always called 8freedom0 8possum10 so as to keep the white people from knowing what we were talking about4 ,we all understood it4 ,some years before emancipation1 my master signed #ijj to be paid in work towards building a ,baptist ,college where we lived4 ,he sent me to work out his subscription4 ,i had four children of my own1 and ,i thought that it was hard for me to work out this #ijj1 when ,i could have no privilege of educating my own children4 ,i little thought then that my children would ever graduate at this college1 but ,god has turned things about so that three of my children have graduated1 and the fourth will graduate next ,june2 so that when ,i worked out this subscription of my master1 ,i was building a college for myself and my family4 ,while at work on this college1 ,i fell into a conversation with the white carpenters at work there1 and they said 8niggers0 would do nothing 8if set free40 ,i told them if they would take me out into the woods and strip every rag from me1 and set me free1 that in ten years ,i would school my children4 ,just after emancipation my master said3 8,ambrose1 ,i want you to let ,nannie stay with her mistress2 she can't do without her40 ,i said3 8,master1 ,i always thought that if ever ,i was free ,i would educate my children2 if 'twas not for that1 sir1 ,i would accommodate you40 8,ambrose10 said he1 8,i hardly thought you would deny me40 ,i said3 8,i can't do any better1 sir40 ,with this we separated1 and now all my children are good scholars2 one is a minister2 one has charge of an academy2 ,i have a good house of seven rooms1 and eleven acres of land about it1 besides a farm of #cbj acres in the country4 ,nothing can illustrate the great change that has come over us1 unless it is the change in passing from earth to heaven4 ,you could see the force of this illustration if you knew our history--if you only knew the dark ,egypt we have come through4 ,i believe emancipation will work out as great things for us as it did for ,israel4 ,when the college and the ,congregational ,church were planted here ,i joined the church1 and have never been sorry for it4 ,i love the missionary cause1 and would rather give all ,i have than to see it go down4 ,i love to think of my son down in ,selma preaching4 ,there was quite a scare there about the yellow fever1 and my son wrote me to know what he should do2 ,i wrote him back1 8to look to the ,lord1 and stand to ,,avery4 ,when one enters upon this kind of work1 he enters upon a tedious and arduous one--a work accompanied with many dark and gloomy days1 as well as some bright ones4 ,i suppose that you are aware that my work has been assigned me at ,avery1 or ,mannah ,bargroo ,station1 on the ,little ,sherbro river1 about fifty-eight miles from ,good ,hope4 ,at this station all of the agricultural work is carried on4 ,we have here a mill1 coffee-farm and ginger farm4 ,i employ in the mill seven native men all the while2 and on the farm two native men2 besides a crew of boatmen1 that row our boat from ,british ,sherbro to the neighboring villages to sell the lumber that is sawed at our mill4 ,we are enabled to keep one boat running all the while1 and it is manned by natives entirely4 ,they make first-rate crewmen1 and have a decided advantage over a similar act of ,englishmen or ,americans1 from the fact that they are always naked1 and there is no impediment in case of an accident4 ,all of them can swim in almost any kind of water4 ,they do not stop to question whether there be alligators in the water or not1 but go at the command4 ,i can say that ,i have tried them sufficiently in all ways1 and ,i have as yet found them all to be quite honest1 with the exception of one man1 who very politely went into my lot of goods on the way from ,good ,hope to my station1 and took therefrom five or six yards of baft to trade for rice4 ,this is the only dishonest act that ,i have known any one to commit since my arrival on the coast of ,africa4 ,i have said a good deal about my boatmen1 and will now give you a brief sketch of the habits and customs of this people4 ,in the first place1 the men go entirely naked1 with the exception of a cloth they wear1 something like that of an ,american baby's diaper4 ,the women wear about four yards of cloth thrown carelessly around them1 covering the lower extremities1 and tied by the ends about the waist4 ,when one dies1 they have what they call 8the cry10 in which all join4 ,they go for miles to attend 8the cry40 ,the body of the deceased is wrapped in matting1 and conveyed to its long resting-place--a hole which is dug for that purpose4 ,this has always been their mode of burying1 and in many instances they prefer it to our way4 ,as to the general build of this people it is quite good4 ,they possess very good features1 as a general thing1 having smooth skins and round faces4 ,their noses are not so flat as the ,american negro's2 neither are their eyes so red and blood-shot4 ,their mouths are not so disfigured4 ,the most of them have quite a neat lip1 not so thick as that of the ,american negro4 ,their hands and feet are generally small4 ,their bodies are very straight and well developed4 ,it is astonishing to see how they carry burdens1 either upon the head or back1 with a loop so that it can be fastened around their foreheads4 ,a good stout man will carry as much on his head and back as you can pack on a young ass three years old1 and they never murmur4 ,they live in mud houses covered with thatch1 but a thatch inferior to anything we know of in ,america4 ,it is made of bamboo1 and only lasts from nine to twelve months4 ,they subsist on rice1 cassada1 cocoa1 fufu1 crencray1 palaver-sauce and fish4 ,any one of these vegetables mentioned will grow without any attention at all1 except the cocoa1 and that is a very tender plant1 indeed1 and the consequence is1 that they have less of it than anything else4 ,the cocoa and cassada are the only vegetables that ,i have learned to eat4 ,the cocoa1 after it is cooked1 is much like an ,irish potato1 and makes a very palatable dish1 indeed4 ,the cassada1 when cooked1 resembles an ,american squash1 and is a very nice dish for dinner or breakfast4 ,should a person presume to eat these vegetables mentioned1 without having been a good while in the country1 he at once had better have a mill-stone hanged about his neck1 and his body committed to the briny deep4 ,he would fare about as well4 ,no foreigner1 of whatever nationality he may be1 can come into ,africa and subsist at first upon the native productions4 ,we are all aware that ,africa has long been called the burying-ground of missionaries4 ,the reasons are1 in my judgment1 these3 ,in the first place1 missionaries in going to ,africa generally exert themselves too much on entering the field4 ,the climate is such as rapidly to reduce one's physical strength4 ,it is a custom among all persons1 as soon as they have been informed of their malady1 at once to retire to their beds1 and demand that a physician be called4 ,the calling of the physician is all right2 but it is far better to keep out of bed1 and to keep moving2 for if you give up and go to bed1 you are almost sure to die4 ,another reason1 as ,i before said1 is trying to live on native productions too early after arriving on the continent4 ,i must say1 just here1 that two-thirds of what you hear about ,africa is fabulous4 ,at least it is so in the region in which our missions are established4 ,there is a great deal said about the native bread-tree4 ,there is such a thing as a bread-tree in this country1 but it is almost as scarce in the region in which the mission is established as the orange-tree is in the ,states1 and you are aware how plentiful the orange-tree is there4 ,the fabulous tree so called1 might very appropriately have been named a squash-tree1 because it bears no similarity to bread1 and will not answer at all in the place of bread4 ,when green1 or before it is plucked1 it bears a close similarity to what is known in the ,states as the hedge orange1 and1 when cooked1 it tastes something between a potato-pumpkin and squash4 ,there are some oranges here1 but they are scarce4 ,they do not seem to be a native fruit1 because they do not grow everywhere in the country1 but only where the ground is cleared up1 and the undergrowth cut down4 ,they are not of a rich yellow color like an ,american orange1 but greenish and small4 ,they have quite a delicious taste1 somewhat devoid of juice1 when compared with our ,florida orange1 but equal to it in sweetness4 ,we have another fruit here1 known as the lime4 ,it bears a close similarity to a lemon2 in fact the only difference that ,i can detect is1 that the lemon as a general thing is larger1 and not so round4 ,as to the pine-apple1 it grows only where it is taken care of2 it may grow in the wilds1 but never bears fruit4 ,the rice that is grown in ,africa is not so good as that in the ,states4 ,it is really the main thing grown upon the continent in the way of eatables4 ,if you buy two bushels of rough rice1 you will not get more than sixteen quarts that can be used1 and you must pay from #bs4 #i;d4 to #cs4 per bushel4 ,this1 ,i am sorry to say1 is about the way with all the country productions4 ,knowing that you are always anxious concerning our health1 ,i1 perhaps1 ought to have spoken of it sooner4 ,i am in quite good health1 and have been since my first attack of the ,african fever4 ,my wife has had quite a severe attack of the fever2 so severe that ,i thought ,i should lose her2 but ,god in his goodness saw fit to spare her to me4 ,she has never regained her strength1 but ,i trust that ,god in some way or other will restore her to perfect health again4 ,the religious work at ,avery is going on nicely4 ,i found here a small chapel1 but no church members4 ,dr4 ,james had kept up a prayer-meeting1 and there was some interest among the people1 but there had been no ingathering of souls to ,christ4 ,after looking around and seeing the real condition of things1 ,i came to the conclusion that whatever was done must be done quickly2 so ,i made it my aim to get at the people at once with the truths of ,jesus ,christ1 and they seemed to take right hold of them as fast as given to them4 ,i adopted this plan3 to take my ,bible every evening and go out among the regular heathen2 but ,i soon found out that ,i was unable to reach them in that way1 from the fact that ,i could not speak their language4 ,so ,i gave that plan up1 and adopted the one of going among them twice a week1 and taking with me my ,bible and an interpretor4 ,this ,i found to be the best plan2 so then and there ,i got hold of the people4 ,now1 having found this to work well1 ,i began to preach to the people in their own villages and 8fackies10 as they call them4 ,after ,i found out that ,i could gather them together in their fackies1 ,i then set to work to persuade them to come to my church2 which ,i did with great success1 and from time to time ,i gathered into the church the following persons and names4 ,june #afth1 ,i opened the doors of the church1 and enrolled the following3 ,h4 ,c4 ,hallock ,l41 ,isaac ,vincent ,l41 ,james ,cole ,l41 ,john ,davis ,r41 ,samuel ,wise ,r41 ,richard ,wilkerson ,r41 ,yamba ,r41 ,one ,pound ,r41 ,henry ,peters ,r41 ,small ,banna ,r41 ,william ,wilberforce ,l41 ,mrs4 ,lucker ,l41 ,mrs4 ,peters ,r41 ,mrs4 ,hannah ,vincent ,l41 and a ,sherbro chief1 ,a4 ,p4 ,cardy ,r4 ,june #cjth1 ,i opened the doors of the church again1 and enrolled the following3 ,james ,picket ,l41 ,sarah ,tucker ,r41 ,mrs4 ,elizabeth ,beal ,r41 ,elizabeth ,wilberforce ,r41 ,mrs4 ,mary ,cole ,l41 ,mrs4 ,nancy ,davis ,r41 ,madam ,damba ,r41 ,madam ,dambee ,r4 ,july #bhth1 ,i opened the doors and took the following names4 ,the chief ,karry ,pherner ,l41 chief1 ,lalula ,r41 ,john ,bull ,r41 ,cunda ,r41 ,kirby ,r41 ,matilda ,leatum ,l41 ,mrs4 ,yamba ,r41 ,mrs4 ,one ,pound ,r41 and ,bye ,r4 ,as ,i neglected to tell you in regard to the conversion of these persons ,i will give you some idea of it by the following letters4 ,the letter 8,r0 signifies recently converted1 and the letter 8,l0 long converted4 ,i must say that the especial blessing of the ,lord seemed very near all on the #dth of ,august4 ,this was the first ,lord's ,supper celebrated at ,avery ,station4 ,on this day ,i preached to a very large number of native men and women4 ,i baptized seven grown persons and four children1 making a total of eleven persons baptized4 ,this people1 as a general thing1 have very many troubles among themselves that must be settled at once1 in order to secure peace among them4 ,if you have gained their confidence1 they will at all times call upon you to settle any disturbance that may occur among them1 it matters not how difficult the case may be4 ,great caution is required in rendering your decision1 otherwise it may cause speedy bloodshed and panic throughout the region4 ,i am sorry to say that the prospects are quite threatening just now for an outbreak at any time in the region adjacent to ,avery and the ,little ,boom4 ,but ,i hope that it will not be very serious4 ,the ,governor is expected to investigate the ,boom trouble this week1 and it is thought that it can be settled without any serious damage to either side4 ,i have felt greatly the lack of reading matter at my ,station4 ,there are many dreary hours out here that might be whiled away with good reading matter4 ,i rather think that some of the good friends in ,new ,york would be glad to send a paper or two now and then to a poor wayfarer on the distant shores of ,africa4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,sisseton ,,agency4 ,farming ,tools ,bought4 ,e4 ,h4 ,c4 ,,hooper1 ,,agent ,for several years past1 till last year1 the crops on this reserve have been nearly all destroyed by grasshoppers2 but this season promises an abundant harvest4 ,the farming has been attended with unusual success1 and the ,indians feel very much encouraged with the result of their farm labor4 ,at present there are #b1aia acres of land broken on this reservation1 #dej acres of which are new land broken during this season4 ,seventeen hundred acres are under cultivation by the ,indians4 ,there was a much larger acreage plowed last fall than ever before at the same season of the year1 and1 under the supervision of our farmer1 it was well prepared for seeding in the spring4 ,nearly all our ,indians1 who were without seed1 were provided from the warehouse early in the season1 and manifested a good degree of interest in planting and cultivating4 ,early in ,july1 many of the ,indian farmers1 feeling confident of a large yield of grain1 were very earnest in their appeals for grain cradles and other appliances with which to secure their crops4 ,and1 under authority from the ,department1 a lot of grain cradles were bought and issued to them4 ,but the number purchased was insufficient to supply the wants of all1 and a considerable portion of the wheat in small fields was cut with scythes4 ,several of our ,indians who have large wheat fields1 have bought harvesters for themselves1 at a cost of from #afe to #bjj each1 and are to pay for them from the proceeds of their sales of wheat2 this is a move in the right direction and cannot be too highly commended4 ,all our ,indians are half-breeds 7with but few exceptions1 and these generally confined to very old people7 wear citizens' dress1 and a large majority of them live in very comfortable houses1 made of hewed logs1 and are furnished with cook-stoves1 tables1 seats1 and other housekeeping conveniences4 ,there are some forty frame buildings occupied by our ,indians1 several of which are two stories high and painted1 all having more or less land under cultivation4 ,schools4 ,during ten months of the year--7the ,manual ,labor ,school eleven months7--three schools have been in successful operation3 the ,manual ,labor ,school1 the ,good-,will ,boarding and ,day-,school1 and the ,ascension ,school4 ,the ,manual ,labor ,school building1 situated one and a half miles from the agency1 was originally provided with seats for fifty-six scholars1 but the sleeping accommodations for this number of children have never been sufficient1 and during the past year our carpenter has made an addition of several new sleeping rooms1 and improved the condition of the old ones1 which has added very much to the comfort and convenience of the pupils4 ,there are only four or five boys of sufficient age to be serviceable about the farm or garden4 ,when out of school they were kept at work preparing the ground for seeding and cultivating1 besides attending to the stock and farm work generally1 all being done under the immediate supervision of the principal1 who is1 fortunately1 a good farmer4 ,after the regular school hours1 the girls are taught sewing of all kinds2 cutting1 making and trimming dresses1 repairing garments2 darning1 knitting and use of sewing machine2 also all kinds of housework1 cooking1 and the work of the dairy4 ,after service in the evening1 instructions are given in music1 instrumental and vocal1 in which both boys and girls take an unusual interest and show a marked improvement during the year4 ,mr4 ,tuckey1 the present principal1 assumed the duties of his office ,may #ast1 and has been untiring in his exertions to advance the pupils in their studies1 and1 for the short time which he has been with them1 appears to have been very successful4 ,the two female assistants having had two years' experience here1 and been deeply interested in their pupils1 have proved very valuable and successful teachers1 and have the confidence and respect of the parents4 ,the time of the matron is fully occupied from six ,a4 ,m4 to nine ,p4 ,m41 in looking after and providing for the numerous wants of the pupils1 and in this difficult and laborious work has proved to be very efficient4 ,the ,good ,will ,mission ,boarding and ,day-,school is situated one and three quarter miles from the agency2 the children are rationed and supplied in part with clothing from the warehouse1 but the other expenses--salaries1 etc--are borne by the ,a4 ,b4 ,c4 ,f4 ,m4 ,this school has accommodated as many as thirty-two scholars1 part of them boarding at houses in the vicinity4 ,the day-school1 situated at ,ascension1 about six miles from the agency1 had1 some months1 thirty scholars2 they live in the vicinity of the school-house1 and are quite regular in attendance4 ,in addition to these three schools1 two others were opened1 and reading1 writing and arithmetic in ,dakota were taught by ,indian teachers1 during two months in the spring1 with an average daily attendance of eighteen scholars each4 ,these schools were opened at the earnest request of several of the leading men in their vicinity1 in the form of a petition to the agent4 ,these parents seemed in earnest in their efforts to have the schools opened1 and showed a continued interest in them by frequent visits during the time they were in operation4 ,the estimated number of children of school-going age on this reserve is three hundred1 and we have two brick school-houses1 built in #ahgc1 at an estimated cost of #fjj each--one situated about one and a half miles south of the agency1 and the other at the ,mayasan1 twenty miles distant2 both are provided with improved seats1 tables1 etc41 and will accommodate forty scholars each2 neither of them has been used1 for school purposes to any extent since they were built1 but allowed to remain unoccupied4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts ,,for ,,october1 #ahgh4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,maine1 #afi4bd4 ,alfred4 ,cong4 ,ch4 and ,soc4
