,on a recent ,sabbath1 one of his boys1 who is to graduate this summer from ,talladega1 preached for him1 and proved himself a good speaker1 possessed of a clear1 logical mind1 with the promise of being a useful man4 ,on the next day1 he and another member of his church1 also a ,talladega student1 spoke at the meeting of the ,young ,men's ,christian ,association extemporaneously1 but with great beauty and force4 ,his missionary meetings are conducted in a way that might be profitably followed by such of our churches as have like helpers4 ,the subject of the last one was 8,africa10 illustrated by a large map4 ,miss ,m41 a graduate of ,fisk ,university1 read a paper on the ,mendi ,mission1 8which would have done honor to any of our ,northern churches40 ,she is possessed of a true along the line over three roads which gave her admission to the ladies' car1 both on her way home and on her return4 ,she proved a splendid teacher and noble woman1 and the colonel is proud to have meeting1 has expressed thanks to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 for work it has been doing in the ,south4 ,the influences multiply and reach out in every direction1 which are destined soon to bring a total and said in his address1 as explanatory of the ,exodus movement among his people1 what seems to have escaped the attention of the ,senate ,exodus ,committee1 that the negro may act from the same motives that influence white men4 ,his address is full of good common sense1 as the following may show3 8,only a few weeks ago1 in a conversation with a colored immigrant from ,georgia1 ,i asked him why he left that ,state and came to ,texas4 ,he replied that a great many of his white neighbors were moving to ,texas1 and he thought that whatever was good for them would be good for him4 8,much has been said in regard to the wrongs and oppressions of which our people complain4 ,while1 doubtless1 there is some ground for their complaint1 their hardships1 in my opinion1 are more the result of their illiterate condition than all things else4 ,if a class of white laborers were as illiterate as our people1 they would be equally oppressed as are the ,irish tenants to-day4 ,capitalists look out for their own interest1 and will1 if they can1 oppress one man1 be his color what it may1 as soon as another4 ,we should remember that knowledge is power and ignorance is weakness4 ,the protection which we most need is the power which education and property give4 ,for my own part1 all ,i ask of any man is an equal chance1 and then if he can outstrip me in the race of life1 let him do it40 99 99 99 99 traffic among the natives1 has been organized by a society of gentlemen interested in the civilization of the 8,dark ,continent0 and in the development of its resources4 ,direct communication is to be opened with ,central ,africa1 and a road has already been constructed a distance of sixty miles around the cataracts of the ,shir1 which1 connecting with a line of steamers1 will constitute a line of #hjj miles from the coast4 ,two ,christian gentlemen of ,edinburgh1 ,messrs4 ,john and ,frederick ,moir1 are at the head of the company4 ,it is to be no less a missionary than a commercial enterprise1 and there is every reason for believing that in both respects it will prove a success4 ,the natives are becoming fully awake to the advantages of the extensive and solid business facilities possessed by the company1 whose future will be watched with great interest4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,west ,african ,reporter1 of ,sierra ,leone1 in announcing changes in the officers and probably in the location of the ,liberia ,college1 7,dr4 ,blyden having been appointed ,president2 and the trustees1 leave being given by the legislature1 having voted to co-operate with the ,american ,board in a plan to remove the college further into the interior17 expresses itself strongly in regard to the injury done to natives who have been sent to ,europe to receive their education4 ,it sums the result thus3 8,we find our children1 as a result of their foreign culture--we do not say in spite of their foreign culture--but as a result of their foreign culture--aimless and purposeless for the race--crammed with ,european formulas of thought and expression1 so as to astonish their bewildered relatives4 ,their friends wonder at the words of their mouth4 ,but they wonder at other things besides their words4 ,they are the ,polyphemus of civilization--huge1 but sightless--cui lumen ademptum40 ,to some extent the same holds true of negroes from the ,south1 educated in the ,north for work in their old homes4 99 99 99 99 99 ,onondaga and ,oneida ,indians4--,there are in the ,state of ,new ,york eight ,indian reservations1 aggregating #hf1ccf acres of land1 a little less than #ah acres to each of the #e1jic ,indians who occupy them4 ,these lands are held by tribal and not individual titles4 ,a few of these ,indians have become thrifty farmers1 but the most of them are idle and poor2 probably one-half are still pagans4 ,a bill has been introduced into the ,legislature to abolish1 with consent of the ,indians1 the treaty of #aghh1 and distribute these lands in severalty to these people4 ,this would end the fatal communal system1 which has proved in this1 as it must in all cases1 so deadly to all prosperity4 ,each ,indian would thus become1 under the laws of the ,state1 a land-owner1 and amenable to the laws on the same footing as other citizens4 ,under the present tribal system1 the father has nothing but his tomahawk and scalping knife to leave to his children1 and transmits only a disposition to use them4 ,give him the right to acquire a title to something else1 and he will doubtless acquire and bequeath it4 99 99 99 99 99 ,there is a poor blind ,samson in this land1 ,shorn of his strength ,that same 8blind ,samson0 is in the land to-day4 ,it is the ,negro1 uneducated1 immoral1 with a ballot in his hand4 ,it is the white man1 uneducated1 immoral1 with a ballot in his hand4 ,for it makes no difference4 ,the harm lies back of the color4 ,the consequences of ignorant suffrage1 by whomsoever exercised1 can be only detrimental to the peace and welfare of the ,state4 ,free institutions can be built up only on the basis of intelligence and integrity4 ,without intelligence and integrity1 the best cannot long survive4 ,if there be large numbers on whom this right has been conferred1 but who are densely ignorant1 especially if these large numbers are grouped in a single section1 like these millions of negroes and poor whites in the ,south1 it is an official notice served on the nation that no time is to be lost in imparting the mental and moral training requisite for the right discharge of these sacred functions of voting4 ,men are not left to settle this question of helping with schools and churches1 merely on the ground of humanity or ,christian duty4 ,their interest is challenged1 and their very selfishness is under contribution4 ,we do not put matches in children's hands1 and then leave them to play about hay-mows4 ,if we give them matches we train them in the use of them4 ,with an instrument in his hands so potent as the ballot1 and with the possibility of using the leverage of it in contingencies easy to be foreseen for the overturning of the nation1 it takes but half an eye to see that the man who wields it ought to have an instructed mind and an instructed conscience1 and the ,state is not secure until he does4 --,,dr4 ,,noble in ,advance4 ,,six ,,preachers1 ,,all ,,of ,,them ,,called4 ,the following letter reveals the condition of one out of many neighborhoods scattered all over the ,south1 densely populated with negroes1 neglected by the whites1 excepting as the agent or overseer of the plantation looks after the owner's interests as connected with the labor of the people4 ,no schools1 no churches1 excepting such as are ministered to by preachers as ignorant and1 in many cases1 as licentious as the people themselves4 ,just think of it6 ,the visit of this ,sunday-school agent the first visit of a white ,christian to the hundred families2 their religious and other culture such as those six preachers could give6 ,and this not in seven in the audience could read4 ,in all1 fifty adults and children joined the ,sunday-school and promised to learn to read4 ,i furnished them with primers1 ,bibles1 ,testaments1 etc41 which seemed to please the plantation agent or overseer as well as the people4 8,after the school was organized1 the blind preacher gave a sermon from ,rev4 xxii4 #a1 #b1 another preacher doing the reading4 ,i shall not attempt to characterize the sermon1 singing and responses4 ,when will white ,christians1 who know the way of life1 surrender their prejudices and teach these poor1 benighted people the ,,life ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,it is a good indication of the movement of the ,south to manufacture its own staples1 that since #ahff it has set in motion #fjj1jjj spindles1 of which ,georgia has #bac1aeg1 a third of them being in ,columbus1 and that the cotton mills at ,augusta1 ,ga41 alone turned out #d1jjj1jjj worth of manufactured products last year1 paid ten to twelve per cent4 dividends1 and carried a handsome surplus to the sinking-fund accounts4 ,the president of the large mills at ,nashville1 ,tenn41 assured us that his mills in #ahgh-i had earned fifteen per cent4 dividends4 ,one of our wealthiest manufacturers of ,new ,england1 who has recently been to ,eastern ,tennessee1 where he has an interest in a new mill1 says if twenty years younger1 he would certainly go ,south and invest largely in manufacturing4 ,everything is favorable for such enterprise4 ,this is in striking contrast with the time when the papers1 voicing the sentiment of ,virginia1 compelled the founders of ,lowell1 ,mass41 to abandon their purpose of building their mills in ,richmond1 because such industries were in deadly hostility to ,southern institutions4 ,another significant1 but almost unnoted feature of the new ,south1 7for the old is passing away more rapidly than is generally believed17 is the increasing favor with which the town system1 but more especially the common-school system1 is regarded by the people4 ,under the old rgime both were unknown4 ,virginia 7and we believe she was in harmony in this with all the other slave ,states7 pauperized the pupil who received aid1 by making the overseer of the poor the disburser of such funds as were appropriated by the ,county ,court for educational purposes4 ,the business1 which in ,new ,england is transacted by the citizens of a town1 assembled in town meeting1 duly warned1 and notified of the business that could be brought before it1 was1 in the ,south1 transacted by the ,county ,court for a whole county4 ,surprise is often expressed that the people of the ,south can be led1 in almost solid masses1 to the polls1 to vote for men and measures which those who know the private sentiments of the people are sure they do not approve4 ,but conceive of ,new ,england as having never sent her children to a common school2 as having never gathered in town meeting2 as having never known even a ,congregational ,church meeting1 and1 at the same time1 as having free thought on all questions of public policy overshadowed1 fettered and ruthlessly throttled by an interest which enthroned itself as supreme in commercial1 political and social life1 before which good society did homage1 and politicians sacrificed1 and divines worshipped1 without whose approval nothing was right1 and without whose protection nothing was safe4 ,conceive what1 under such circumstances1 ,new ,england would have been1 and then cease to wonder that the pro-slavery disunionist was not crushed1 and that the ,bourbon politician is not buried under the new sentiment which lives in the ,south to-day4 ,but it is manifest to anyone who knew the ,south under the old state of things1 and who has had opportunity of seeing it to-day1 that these two agencies which have made ,new ,england what she is1 but were unknown to the ,south--which were thrust upon her as a part of the reconstructive machinery1 against her sullen but helpless protest1 and were hated accordingly--are coming more and more into favor with the people4 ,it is noteworthy and significant that the ,legislature of ,tennessee1 last year1 in all its frantic1 unwise1 and dishonest efforts to reduce expenses1 did not reduce her school appropriations4 ,he must be a blind observer and a dull reasoner who does not see that this is most significant as showing that old things are passing away1 and all things are becoming new in a regenerated ,south4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,negro1 ,,on ,,the ,,status ,,and ,,exodus ,,of ,,the ,,negro4 ,it is significant that the leading article in the current number of the ,south ,atlantic1 the lite literary magazine of the ,south1 is by a colored man4 ,his topic is1 8,the ,status of the ,negro1 and the ,exodus40 ,it is able and fair in its treatment of the subject4 ,the editor disclaims responsibility for its statements1 and slightly apologizes for its publication2 would have been glad1 had it not seemed unfair to the writer1 to modify a few paragraphs2 but has given a negro full leave to tell his white readers just what he thinks of negro status and exodus4 ,this fact is one which should not be forgotten4 ,on the other hand1 it would be well for us to hear just what an intelligent negro has to say on this topic4 ,the writer1 ,rev4 ,d4 ,j4 ,sanders1 indicates the difficulties in the way of his people's progress2 obstacles thrown in the way both by his friends and his enemies2 asserts that because of what he is1 the negro has made commendable progress in spite of these hindrances1 aided by missionary preachers and teachers who paid but little attention to1 and took no part in1 the political events which were transpiring about them4 ,evidently1 in his estimation1 the improved condition of his people has not been due to political action1 but to schools and moral influences4 ,he asserts that the ,exodus has not been brought about by political causes1 though a certain class of politicians have done something to spread the movement2 nor is it due to the fact that educational or religious privileges have been withheld1 for1 strictly1 it cannot be asserted that such has been the case4 ,persons who were pronounced in their opposition to negro schools are1 when this movement begins1 laboring side by side with those who have devoted themselves to negro education4 ,whatever of politics1 or education1 or religion may enter into the movement is merely incidental4 ,political abuse there has been1 but the ,exodus movement began after this had for the most part ceased1 and has raged most where this abuse has been least known1 as near the home of the writer1 in ,north ,carolina4 ,there have been1 and are now in some ,states1 unjust laws regulating labor and wages4 ,the script system1 which permits the employer to pay the laborer in script redeemable at his store1 has been known1 and is ruinously unjust to the laborer1 but in the two ,states where this movement has been greatest1 regulative legislation has been in the one exactly the reverse of what it is in the other4 ,in ,mississippi the landlord must fulfil his engagements before he can force his tenant to quit4 ,in ,north ,carolina the tenant must fulfil his before he can leave4 ,fundamentally1 it is the impoverished condition of the people1 conjoined with restlessness1 and supplemented by idle curiosity1 making change easy and desirable1 which has exposed these poor people to the designs of unscrupulous sharpers and demagogues4 ,they have inherited poverty1 ignorance1 improvidence1 to say nothing of positive vices4 ,they have been hindered by positive efforts to keep them down4 ,they have been discouraged by the fact that success would give them no social or political advantage1 and so they have either refused to labor1 or have squandered in pic-nics and cake-walks1 for tobacco and whiskey1 it is estimated1 about eighty millions of dollars annually4 ,there have been1 so far1 about #bh1jjj of these exodusters who have paid an average of about #af4fe to the railroad companies for transportation4 ,out of this the companies have paid to the unscrupulous agents who promote the movement1 one dollar for full1 and fifty cents for half fares4 ,the roads have received about #ejj1jjj from these people1 and hope for at least half as much more from a return movement4 ,the emigrants have received in charity about seven cents each1 as an offset to the #af4fe which they have paid for transportation alone4 ,we know not what report the ,senate ,exodus ,committee will make1 but are confident that it will come no nearer the truth in regard to this movement than has the writer of this article4 ,so long as the negro is thus ignorant he will be helpless against the oppressor1 whether he be the old master or the pretended new friend4 ,when we know the possibilities yet undeveloped in the negro1 and give full scope to them1 we shall know also what an element of wealth and strength here is in what is now known as an incubus on prosperity and a menace to our national life4 ,,conditions ,,of ,,indian ,,civilization4 ,before the ,indian can become civilized1 the conditions of civilization must exist4 ,for him1 at present1 these are scarcely possible4 ,no mere tribe can attain to a civilized state1 yet the tribal relation is fostered and perpetuated by our policy4 ,such agencies of a civilized life as civil courts1 town meetings1 common schools1 railroads1 telegraphs1 etc41 these are simply impossible so long as tribes of men are forced or permitted to wander over vast territories to which they have no other title than that of tribal occupancy4 ,the prime condition of a home is an exclusive title to the land upon which it stands and from which its support can be drawn4 ,without a home1 a high civilization is impossible1 but our policy has been to discourage1 and too often render impossible1 the creation of a home by the ,indian4 ,he is the ward of the nation--a ward who has never been taken to the maternal bosom as a child1 who is not permitted to reach his majority1 or to care for himself1 who is cheated by his guardian1 and unfitted by the whole course of his education for the duties and responsibilities of manhood4 ,there has been no false principle of politics but has been applied to his regulation4 ,there has been no species of wrong1 or injustice1 or folly1 which has not been practiced upon him1 and regarded by him as the exponent of our ,christian civilization4 ,it is time this foolish and wicked treatment should cease2 time that we showed something like an honest desire to do justly by him1 even though incapable of wise statesmanship4 ,the principles which have lifted up savage tribes and made of them civilized nations are historic1 and might be known to1 and their application attempted by1 the ,government4 ,our ,congressmen should be compelled to hear other demands than those made by reckless adventurers who find the ,indian occupying lands he would possess4 ,judging from all past experience we have every reason to believe that1 under secure conditions of life and property1 these tribes would settle down and become worthy and excellent citizens4 ,the protection of the ,indian must be individual and not tribal2 it must be found in courts which administer impartial justice1 not in longer-ranged rifles and fleeter ponies4 ,in short he must have the opportunities and defences of manhood1 and thus be prepared for the responsibilities and duties of citizenship4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,african ,,notes4 --,the held six of his union ,bible meetings at ,washington1 ,richmond1 ,raleigh1 ,dudley1 ,wilmington1 and ,savannah1 three of which1 as will be observed1 were in this ,state4 ,the series has been one of great interest and profit4 ,there are three points of special notice4 ,the first is the quickening of the spirit of ,christian union among these people1 whose sectarianism is quite intense4 ,the second is the great honor which is put upon the word of ,god by the constant service of ,bible readings1 with the plans of the same multiplied for the people by his portable copyist4 ,the third point in this work is1 that revivals of genuine ,bible religion are usually the result4 ,this was true at the meeting at ,raleigh1 where there were about #cjj conversions among the colored people4 ,there is manifest an abiding increase of regard for the word of ,god4 ,the quality of the converts is also hopeful4 ,as another perceptible result1 union meetings1 led by an ,evangelist1 have since been held by the white ,churches of that city1 and there were about #bjj hopeful conversions in these4 ,we congratulate the ,y4 ,m4 ,c4 ,a4 upon this successful inauguration of their work among the ,freedmen4 ,and we make grateful recognition of the influence of ,maj4 ,joseph ,hardie1 of ,selma1 ,ala41 a member of the ,y4 ,m4 ,c4 ,a4 ,committee1 in selecting and introducing ,mr4 ,brown to this work in his own city4 ,i am happy to make mention also of the work of ,rev4 ,e4 ,e4 ,rogers as an ,evangelist in our ,church at ,macon1 ,ga4 ,he has proven himself a judicious and successful laborer1 wise1 earnest and loving4 ,pastor ,lathrop is very emphatic in commending him4 ,resulting from the stimulus of this meeting1 special services were projected in all the other colored churches of the city4 ,and as a matter of fact1 revival meetings in the white churches followed4 ,mr4 ,rogers had also been a worker of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 in former years4 ,we hope that his services in the future may be secured in this line of special movement in our churches at the ,south4 ,they have come to a degree of intelligence and of steadiness that will encourage such endeavor4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,south-,,western ,,congregational ,,association4 ,annual ,meeting at ,terrebonne1 ,la41 ,apr4 #g-aj4 ,,rev4 ,w4 ,s4 ,,alexander4 ,the fact that our meeting was to be at ,terrebonne1 where we have a live1 growing church1 and a vigorous1 devoted minister1 gave promise not only of a hospitable welcome1 but of a profitable season of communion4 ,brother ,clay and his church had made every preparation4 ,one hundred and fifty dollars had been raised and expended in putting the church and parsonage in perfect order4 ,a long room in the house adjoining the church had been provided with a table sufficient to accommodate the delegates1 and the table was furnished with new tumblers1 knives and forks and spoons1 and the kitchen with a new stove1 all involving a good bill of costs1 but met with the greatest cheerfulness1 and without the thought of hardship2 and then the members of the church and congregation brought in chickens1 hams and bread1 and everything to satisfy the appetite of hungry men1 and ,i find that ,louisiana ,congregationalists eat with the same relish as their brethren in the ,new ,england ,associations4 ,so much for the material part of the feast1 for which ,brother ,clay and his flock deserve all praise and thanks4 ,with the exception of two of the small mission churches1 every church was represented4 ,terrebonne is central1 and the ,morgan ,r4 ,r4 extension 7finished to ,new ,iberia71 makes communication easy and rapid4 ,there is something delightful about a new church organization4 ,there is an inspiration in building upon newly-laid foundations1 and every member feels that he is essential to the success of the movement4 ,in an organization representing many years and great numerical strength1 a man of quiet1 retiring spirit is lost to view2 but in the first years1 every heart and hand are needed4 ,the reports from the churches indicate a pure and steady growth4 ,the process of cutting off dead branches has gone on1 so that although nearly two hundred have been received during the year1 the numerical gain over all losses has been very small4 ,we are glad to believe that the sixteen hundred members in the churches of the ,association represent more solid moral worth than in any previous year4 ,in the business sessions1 when questions requiring wisdom and prudence were presented1 and in the discussions of vital religious topics1 ,i was gratified to observe real progress in the ability1 self-control and kindly ,christian spirit of the brethren4 ,these annual meetings serve as a profitable school1 and are attended by willing and eager learners4 ,it was a great joy and blessing to have ,dr4 ,roy with us this year4 ,the brethren have already learned to love him1 and to confide in his counsels4 ,the ,association placed him under heavy tribute at this meeting4 ,at their request he give an address on 8,our ,country10 and with his large illustrative map indicated the vast extent and marvelous resources of what is now their country1 and of which they are citizens4 ,but a few years ago the plantation was all the country they knew anything about1 and from the law of the plantation there was no appeal4 ,but now they belong to ,uncle ,sam's family of #ej1jjj1jjj1 and can look to him for protection4 ,dr4 ,roy gave an address on our ,congregational polity1 which greatly delighted the people4 ,hitherto1 many of them have loved ,congregationalism without being able to give a reason for it4 ,the address was timely and profitable1 because the brethren1 while not waging a denominational warfare with other churches1 desire to be intelligent in regard to their own faith1 and to be able 8to give a reason for the hope that is within them40 ,the annual sermon1 by ,rev4 ,w4 ,p4 ,ward1 of ,gretna1 was earnest and practical1 and prepared the large audience for the sermon of the ,moderator which followed it4 ,but few congregations in the ,north would bear two sermons on the same evening1 but they not only did that at ,terrebonne1 but by song and prayer and exhortation continued the service another hour4 ,the brethren seconded the appeals of the preachers from the pulpit1 and went down among the people1 entreating them to come to ,christ by repentance and faith4 ,eight came forward and kneeled down for prayer1 and many hands went up in the audience4 ,god put honor upon ,his truth that night1 and the hearts of the people were touched4 ,the sermon of ,dr4 ,roy on the last morning was tender and searching1 and the tears of the people showed that he had not spoken in vain4 ,the ,church in ,new ,iberia called ,rev4 ,w4 ,r4 ,polk1 and he has already entered upon his work4 ,he has a good field4 ,may ,god give him grace to cultivate it4 ,five 8missionaries at large0 were chosen4 ,some of them already have churches1 and take on all the supplementary work for which they can find time4 ,these men are unsalaried1 and depend1 in their missionary tours1 upon the thoughtful kindness and hospitality of those to whom they go4 ,hospitality is a virtue among this people4 ,they exercise it 8without grudging40 ,they have a real love for sharing their 8loaf0 with him1 be he stranger or friend1 who calls at their door4 ,it is only necessary that he have the 8password0 of the ,christian ,church4 ,rev4 ,w4 ,s4 ,alexander and ,rev4 ,isaac ,h4 ,hall were elected delegates to the ,national ,congregational ,council4 ,the next meeting of the ,association will be held in ,terrebonne the #ast ,wednesday in ,april1 #ahha4 ,brother ,clay said3 8,i haven't been half paid for my trouble4 ,you must come back next year40 ,greeting to all the sister ,associations in the ,north6 ,perhaps we should say filial rather than fraternal1 but the infant of five years ago is a good1 strong child to-day1 and we claim a seat at the family table4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,georgia4 ,our ,revival4 ,,rev4 ,s4 ,e4 ,,lathrop1 ,,macon4 ,our church observed the week of prayer1 and there seemed to follow an unusual tenderness in the regular prayer-meetings4 ,the people became more united and earnest1 and it was evident that the way for better things was being prepared4 ,in ,february1 some of the brethren suggested sending for the aid of ,rev4 ,e4 ,e4 ,rogers1 of ,orange1 ,conn41 who was pastor here from #ahfi to #ahgc4 ,i wrote and found that the way was open for his coming1 and we began at once to hold extra prayer-meetings4 ,brother ,rogers came during the last week of ,february1 and remained five weeks1 preaching and laboring with uncommon earnestness and consecration4 ,the ,lord has evidently fitted him for this special work4 ,the church took hold with remarkable unanimity4 ,i never have known any church in the ,north to be so thoroughly united in revival effort4 ,the contagion spread to other churches1 many of them soon beginning to hold special services4 ,this somewhat lessened our audiences1 but a general revival spirit spread through the city1 and still continues4 ,during one or two weeks we held union afternoon prayer-meetings with a colored ,baptist church1 a very uncommon thing in this country4 ,the meetings were quiet1 tender1 impressive throughout4 ,the people are beginning to get out of their old ideas of a noisy conversion4 ,some of the 8old-time0 quaint1 plaintive songs are1 however1 wonderfully apt and appropriate in such seasons1 ranking among the most effective 8spiritual songs40 ,we held neighborhood meetings in various localities1 which seem more necessary here as the people are so widely scattered4 ,one disadvantage we found was the necessity for late hours at night4 ,some of our people are 8in service10 and cannot get away early1 and the rest do not finish their work until night1 and afterward must go home and get supper1 and walk from one to three miles to church4 ,our little band1 however1 were remarkably faithful in attendance1 though we could not often begin the preaching until half-past eight or nine o'clock4 ,one peculiarity which ,i discovered during the meetings was1 that so many of the colored people labor so long under conviction before conversion4 ,i had formerly supposed them to be a very religious people1 easily persuaded to become ,christians2 but my experience is 7confirmed by that of other workers71 that very many labor under intense conviction for many days1 and even for weeks1 coming to the 8anxious seat0 every night for long periods1 and seeming1 for some reason1 unable to yield themselves up4 ,no doubt this is in part owing to the traditions handed down from the older ones1 and in part to ignorance of the true way4 ,yet1 even after much personal labor and explanation is given1 they often remain unenlightened4 ,it is a phenomenon to me1 especially as it is seen in the case of some of the most intelligent4 ,there have been from twelve to fifteen hopeful conversions4 ,ten have united with our church1 four of whom are heads of families1 and the rest promising young men and women4 ,some have united with other churches4 ,it is the custom here with some to seize hold of converts at once and endeavor to persuade them into other churches4 ,sometimes the different denominations 7of the old-time churches7 wrangle over converts4 ,one ,saturday night we held a neighborhood meeting in the house of a well-to-do colored family4 ,the strains of song floated out from door and windows1 and the sound fell upon the ears of a 8poor white0 woman of the lowest class1 who was living illegally with a deaf colored man4 ,her heart was stirred4 ,she asked permission to attend the next prayer-meeting1 held at the same house on the following ,saturday4 ,there she rose1 and1 with tearful voice1 confessed ,christ1 in the midst of her dusky audience4 ,it seems to be a genuine conversion4 ,she brought in one night three other degraded white women1 one of whom was also living illicitly with a colored man1 another1 who had not attended church for fourteen years1 and the third1 who had never before in her life entered the doors of a church6 ,and now comes the question1 like that of the famous novel1 8,what will ,he do with it80 ,this poor1 erring woman is in frail health and hardly able to earn her living4 ,she lives with a colored man whom1 she says1 she is willing to marry4 ,she wants to marry him and join our church4 ,but here the civil law steps in and says1 8,thou shalt not40 ,it is a crime in the eyes of this commonwealth for white and colored persons to inter-marry1 and whoever celebrates such a marriage lays himself liable to a thousand dollars fine4 ,of course1 we cannot admit her to the church while living in her present relations4 ,she cannot marry1 according to the law2 she has no friends1 and is not able to support herself if she should leave him4 ,even now she is so poor that she has to borrow shoes and other clothing in order to attend church4 ,the white churches here have no room for such persons4 ,she is in a more pitiable condition than even the lowest of the negroes4 ,such are some of the problems that beset us4 ,another of these white women is the prodigal daughter of a good family1 and we are endeavoring to persuade her to return to her friends4 ,our revival has strengthened the church1 and has caused us all to 8thank ,god and take courage40 ,brother ,rogers returned to his home with the benedictions of a multitude4 ,we trust the work has not yet ceased4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,alabama4 ,missionary needed4 ,,rev4 ,c4 ,e4 ,,curtis1 ,,selma4 ,we are in the midst of a great union effort here that has been opening the eyes of all the churches to the great need of missionary work right at our doors4 ,the whole city has been districted off and workers assigned from one of the different churches to each district4 ,these are expected to visit every family1 take down the name and residence of each person five years old and upward1 with his religious condition and needs1 present those who may not be in the habit of attending ,sunday-school with a card of introduction to the superintendent of any school they may prefer1 have religious conversation1 ,bible reading and prayer1 wherever it can be done to advantage1 and urge upon all1 young and old1 a regular attendance on ,sunday-school and church services4 ,every week1 we hold meetings to hear reports from the workers in the different localities1 and these meetings are intensely interesting4 ,it would rejoice your hearts1 ,i know1 to hear the uniform testimony of delight in the work from those who1 in many cases1 entered upon it with fear and trembling4 ,at the same time1 the amount of religious destitution1 intemperance and superstition brought to light in this city of churches and schools 7there are eight churches and four schools for the colored people here71 is alarming4 ,out of twenty-one families1 visited by one worker1 only two had ,bibles1 all but two used tobacco1 and the majority whiskey4 ,of twenty-two families visited by myself1 only eight had any church members among them1 and the great majority used both whiskey and tobacco4 ,very few attended ,sunday-school4 ,one hadn't been inside of a church for five years but once1 and then only to attend the funeral of a friend4 ,one1 who admitted that he habitually used both whiskey and tobacco1 claimed to be a minister in good and regular standing among his brethren1 and he is not the only such example in the city4 ,several of the workers1 particularly a young student from the ,baptist ,theological ,school here1 made stirring appeals to the churches that they more earnestly endeavor to bring in the poor and degraded1 and make them feel at home in the house of ,god4 99 99 99 99 99 ,last ,sabbath a young man came to us to inquire1 8,what must ,i do to be saved80 ,on asking what he had been trying to do1 we learned that he had endeavored to follow the plain1 simple directions of the ,bible at first1 but so many of his friends had told him that he must stop reading his ,bible and go to praying for visions and dreams1 that he had become very much confused about the way4 ,many of them say plainly that they 8don't believe in ,bible religion40 ,they believe firmly in personal revelations from ,god1 and that these are superior to those in the ,bible4 ,there is more excuse for them than for others1 when we consider that so few can read and judge for themselves1 and that for generations the ,bible has been1 and still is1 represented to them by so many to be the bulwark of slavery4 ,but when ,i think what abundance of material there is among these millions in the ,south for religious fanaticism to feed upon1 it is a wonder to me that they have1 on the whole1 wandered so little from the truth1 that some imposture has not spread among them before this--as ,mormonism did at the ,north and ,west--and swept thousands of them away4 ,i fear it will be the case yet1 if the churches are not more faithful in preaching and teaching the pure ,gospel4 ,now1 to make the matter practical1 what can we do about it8 ,surely1 much more ought to be done here by educated ,bible ,christians2 but our teachers are already nearly breaking down with overwork in their regular school duties1 there being one less teacher than usual on the force this year2 the missionary and industrial work they have been doing1 and in which they feel such an interest1 they will probably not be able to keep up another year1 and ,mrs4 ,c4 will be compelled to give up much that she has been doing4 ,in short1 ,i am more than ever convinced that we need a lady missionary here1 to devote her whole time to personal work among the classes not now reached by our schools and churches1 and to take charge of the industrial work among the women and girls4 ,we have in mind just the one we need if her support can be assured4 ,our church will1 ,i am sure1 assume a share of the expense1 though it will be impossible for them to do much more than they are doing4 ,now1 who among the friends of the work in the ,north will help us in this matter1 which seems so important8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,africa4 ,a ,,letter ,,from ,,prof4 ,t4 ,n4 ,,chase4 ,among the most interesting experiences in our visit to the ,mendi ,mission was a trip to ,kaw-,mendi1 the first station of the mission1 where1 over forty years ago1 ,mr4 ,raymond1 with his company of ,amistad captives1 began their new home1 near the spot where the latter had been torn from their native land1 and carried across the sea to be sold into slavery4 ,a row of eight hours in a boat of four oars1 propelled by ,junjo1 ,mmodo ,grenace1 ,carrij ,mi-,mah and ,boyema1 and steered by ,geo4 ,keing1 took us across the ,sherbro1 up the ,jong and the ,small ,boom to our destination4 ,the chief objects of interest on the way were wild monkeys1 alligators1 and mangrove trees1 bearing vegetable oysters that could be plucked as we sailed past4 ,the rowers 8cheered the weary traveler10 and increased the speed of the boat1 by singing songs in their native tongue1 in which1 no doubt1 as is usually the case1 they indulged in personal comments concerning their passengers4 ,a little after 8the sun die0 we reach ,kaw-,mendi1 and are ushered into a native house of four rooms1 whose walls1 partitions and floors are made of mud1 and whose steep hip roof is covered with 8bamboo shingles10 the rafters and sheathing being cane4 ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,williams1 born and educated in ,british ,guiana1 gave us a hearty welcome to their mission home1 leaving their work of manufacturing arrow-root to prepare us a cup of tea4 ,it was prayer-meeting night and we gladly accepted an invitation to attend service4 ,the 8barrie10 in which meetings are held1 is a bamboo roof1 supported by tall posts1 and enclosed by a mud wall about four feet high4 ,the floor and platforms are also of mud1 nicely sanded4 ,i was unable to count the audience1 for the lamps shed a dim light which was not reflected from the faces of the company4 ,a row of boys led the singing1 a young man 8turned the word0 of those who spoke in ,english1 and several led in brief prayers which we could not understand1 but which sounded sensible and devotional4 ,in the morning we took a more particular view of the premises4 ,mr4 ,williams' house stands just in front of the site of the old residence of ,mr4 ,raymond and ,mr4 ,thompson1 a slight hollow and small bank being the only things to mark the place where it stood4 ,while twenty years had crumbled to mother earth1 buildings and fences1 and produced a jungle that made it almost impossible to identify the site1 the cashew1 orange and bread-fruit trees had been going on with their steady growth1 and are now doing good service with their fruit and shade4 ,the flats along the banks of the river1 that had much to do with the unhealthfulness of the location1 on account of which it was abandoned1 are probably the same now that they were then4 ,at our request1 the two surviving ,amistad captives came to see us1 ,mr4 ,parn and ,mr4 ,smith4 ,the former had a pleasant smiling face1 but was too deaf to converse4 ,the latter wore a rugged-looking countenance1 and after a little coaxing told us something of his early life1 dwelling especially upon the reason why the ,amistads rose up and killed the officers of the vessel on which they were being carried to ,america4 ,he said the cook told them that they were to be killed and eaten1 and showed them a huge kettle in which they were to be boiled4 ,so they rescued themselves from the sad fate that seemed to await them by slaying their captors1 acting on the same principle that ,stanley did when the natives on the ,congo tried to make 8meat0 of him and his companions4 ,chief ,geo4 ,thompson ,tucker came to pay his respects4 ,he was educated in the mission and was a pupil of ,geo4 ,thompson4 ,he is not a ,christian1 but favors ,mr4 ,williams' work1 and renders him much assistance4 ,he wore pants and shoes1 and a frock made of country cloth in a country fashion4 ,he converses in ,english fluently1 and sometimes interprets for ,mr4 ,williams4 ,we desired to visit the cemetery1 which ,mr4 ,thompson had removed to some distance1 that the sight of so many graves of fallen missionaries might not depress the living4 ,the dew being heavy and the 8road0 having grown up somewhat1 ,chief ,tucker had two of his men go on in advance1 and trim off the overhanging branches with their cutlasses1 which they used with wonderful dexterity4 ,the cemetery is partly surrounded by a ditch and bank1 ,mr4 ,thompson having concluded that this was more permanent than any fence that could be erected4 ,after a little search by the ,chief and old ,mr4 ,smith1 three graves were found1 ranged side by side at the foot of a mango tree--those of ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,tefft and ,jane ,winters4 ,the wood of which ,mr4 ,thompson made head boards1 and which he said did not 8know how to rot10 has in some way obtained that undesirable knowledge1 and even the planks laid on the graves by some later visitor have crumbled nearly into dust4 ,the other graves that were identified were those of ,mr4 ,garnick1 ,mr4 ,carter1 ,mrs4 ,arnold and ,mr4 ,thompson's son ,george1 who died ,june #f1 #ahec1 at the age of six years4 ,seven mango trees between one and two feet in diameter mark these resting places4 ,to me there was a strange fascination about this consecrated spot1 and words cannot express the feelings ,i experienced as ,i walked there among the sainted dead in that distant1 strange land4 ,we next visited the arrow-root farm and saw the boys dig the bulbs1 which resemble the sweet potato in shape4 ,then we went to the little mill where the bulbs are grated and strained1 ready for drying and packing4 ,mr4 ,williams finds the cultivation and manufacture of arrow-root reasonably profitable1 and he deserves encouragement in teaching the natives this and other industries1 for the great need of ,west ,africa1 apart from the ,gospel1 is a knowledge of remunerative agriculture4 ,the church bell had a strange sound1 and we learned that it was an old gun-barrel that had been planted in the ground in a native's door-yard to keep witches out of the house1 but upon the conversion of the owner1 had been given up to ,mr4 ,williams1 and had thus been converted from a profane to a sacred use4 ,fifteen church members1 twelve inquirers1 one hundred attendants upon ,sunday service1 twenty-three family and nine day pupils1 the house and barrie1 a clearing of three or four acres1 the cultivation of various crops1 the manufacture of arrow-root and frequent visits to neighboring towns1 give some idea of the industry1 perseverance and ,christian zeal of this devoted laborer during the past three years1 and seem to make it possible to continue the work on this spot of so many hallowed associations and memories4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 8,,california ,,chinese ,,mission40 newly-fledged legislators1 there was scarcely one1 at the opening of the sessions1 but had his pet scheme1--a sure cure for the ,chinese ail2 and the river of ,egypt scarce brought forth frogs more plentifully than did our noisy ,legislature its anti-,chinese bills4 ,but most of them died before they were fairly1 fully born1 and the rest are either squelched under the weight of the ,u4 ,s4 little more of the ,chinese gold to be 8placed where it would do most good20 but1 no other effect of their bombastic demonstration seems now to be even dreamed of4 ,all this helps us hope that we shall be able to pursue our mission-work with no special molestations1 and that the result of our summer campaign may be as bright as the out-look is just now4 ,a ,touching ,farewell ,service4--the following paragraph which appeared in the ,pacific of ,april #adth1 over the initials of the ,principal of our ,central school1 ,i am sure will interest our readers4 ,it explains itself3 8,a very interesting and impressive meeting was held in ,bethany chapel on ,thursday evening1 ,april #hth4 ,a large number of the ,chinese friends and scholars of ,mrs4 ,s4 ,a4 ,worley and ,misses ,jessie and ,florence ,worley1 who for some years have been teachers in the schools of the ,california ,chinese ,mission of this city1 had met together to bid these teachers farewell1 as the family intended going to their new home in ,stockton on the following day4 ,after the regular exercises of ,thursday evening1 consisting of singing1 prayer and a short address in ,chinese1 the meeting was thrown open to any who wished to speak or lead in prayer4 ,the first who rose spoke of his regret at their departure and his gratitude for their kindness4 ,he then said3 #8,one year ago ,i hated ,christian ,chinese1 and ,i hated the name of ,jesus ,christ4 ,then ,miss ,worley came to teach me1 and read and explained the ,bible to me1 and by and by ,i came to love ,jesus ,christ1 the ,son of ,god1 and all those who worship him4' ,one after another the ,chinese brethren came forward to bear witness to their love for these devoted teachers1 and their sorrow for their departure4 ,many of them1 like the first speaker1 testified that they had been brought to the knowledge of the saving power of ,christ's love by the words and the example of their loved teachers4 ,more than one tremulous voice and dimmed eye1 gave evidence that their words were not the complimentary exaggerations of ,chinese courtesy1 but came deep from hearts filled with love and gratitude for kindness that had been bestowed upon them1 and overflowing with grief at parting from their benefactors4 #8,we have nothing to repay you1 our dear teachers1' they said1 #8for all your kindness in teaching us your language1 and in leading us to ,christ2 but we can pray ,god that ,he will bless you and keep you wherever you may go4 ,you will go to ,stockton and we will go to ,china1 and may never see one another again on earth2 but in heaven we will meet again4' ,the frequent brief prayers1 offered in ,chinese1 were unintelligible to the ,americans present1 but the frequent recurrence of the words #8,stockton' and #8,worley' showed that these men1 just awakened from heathen darkness1 had grasped the idea of an omnipotent and loving ,father1 to whom they might confidently intrust their absent friends4 ,what an ample reward to these teachers for their earnest and prayerful devotion must such testimony have been6 ,what a foretaste of heavenly bliss they experienced in seeing this fruit of their labor in the redemption of so many souls from idolatry and heathenism6 ,h4 ,m4 ,p40 ,more about ,oroville4--,i give1 perhaps1 more than its share of notice to our new work in ,oroville4 ,but this is our first attempt to reach the
