missionaries4 ,the lady missionaries sent out by the ,woman's ,boards often find their first and most effective means of access to the people in the schools they start for girls4 ,our one hundred and fifteen lady teachers are doing the work of ,christian training along with that of school teaching1 and are missionaries nearly as much as the seven ladies who devote themselves exclusively to direct mission work4 ,they have a right to consider themselves as missionaries4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we notice in the list of officers of the ,first ,state ,sunday-school ,convention of ,louisiana1 the name of ,rev4 ,w4 ,s4 ,alexander1 ,president of ,straight ,university and pastor of the ,central ,congregational ,church of ,new ,orleans1 as one of the ,vice-,presidents and also of the ,executive engaged in our work in the midst of such examples as these4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the question how to interest the ,sunday-schools in missionary work has met with a new answer in the cordial reception and use of our ,jubilee ,concert ,exercise4 ,five large editions have been exhausted1 and now a second ,exercise has been prepared 7,no4 #b71 in which a number of questions are to be answered by as many persons as there are letters in the alphabet1 covering the main facts of our various work4 ,five ,jubilee ,songs are inserted to be sung by a choir1 and place is left for short addresses4 ,we commend it to our friends1 who will receive as many copies as they need for use1 gratuitously1 by applying to ,dist4 ,sec4 ,pike4 99 99 99 99 99 ,it is with profound sadness that we record the death of two of our most esteemed co-laborers in the administration of missionary work4 ,the ,rev4 ,charles ,p4 ,bush1 ,d4 ,d41 for many years associated with all our churches1 especially in the ,middle ,states1 as the ,district ,secretary of the ,a4 ,b4 ,c4 ,f4 ,m41 has not only enjoyed the confidence1 but won the love1 of pastors and people on every hand4 ,we shall miss him greatly4 ,the ,rev4 ,robert ,l4 ,dashiell1 ,d4 ,d41 the ,secretary of the ,missionary ,society of the ,methodist ,episcopal ,church1 has been a tower of strength not only to the broad missionary enterprises of that denomination1 but1 by his genial sympathy and wise counsels1 has added to the efficiency and courage of his brethren in the work outside of his own organization4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we much regret to learn of the death of ,miss ,dell ,safford1 formerly a teacher under this ,association4 ,for six years1 she labored faithfully and conscientiously among the ,freedmen in ,talladega and ,selma1 ,ala4 ,she was patient and untiring in her efforts for the real good of those under her instruction1 and her interest in them did not flag even after she left the field1 but showed itself especially in the care she exercised over one of her pupils1 whom she had brought with her that he might receive the benefits of a ,northern education4 ,after leaving the service of this ,society1 she removed to ,wisconsin4 ,but a cold taken in the spring1 when she was already overworked and worn1 could not be controlled1 and consumption followed4 ,she died at the last very suddenly of hemorrhage4 99 99 99 99 99 ,one of the most hopeful signs of the times in the missionary field is seen in the increasing demand and the corresponding supply of missionary intelligence4 ,the ,missionary ,herald has enlarged its space between the borders1 and fills it with valuable matter4 ,its strong point is1 as it has been1 its full and valuable letters from the front4 ,the ,foreign ,missionary of the ,presbyterian ,board has been of late renewing its youth1 and coming up1 until it has become the most suggestive and vivacious of all the periodicals of the kind which meet our eyes4 ,but nowadays1 when intelligent people read the doings of all the world every morning at their breakfast tables1 and are no longer satisfied with the village or the county news1 they must have something which shall give them broader views of the great field of missions1 which is the world1 than they can obtain from the organs of special societies4 ,to meet this want1 the societies themselves are increasingly informing their constituency that there is other work being done than that they do themselves4 8,the work of other societies0 is becoming a familiar heading4 ,even this1 however1 does not answer the full demands--and that the day has come for missionary periodicals1 which are edited and circulated upon the same basis as those which deal with scientific or material progress1 shows that the broader interests of the coming kingdom are taking more fully their appropriate place in the hearts and minds of ,christian men and women4 ,the ,missionary ,review1 which has been published for more than two years from ,princeton1 ,new ,jersey1 and which as an unsparing critic of existing missionary societies1 is adapted to promote great circumspection in those who administer them1 is re-enforced in this general field by ,the ,gospel in all ,lands1 edited by ,rev4 ,albert ,b4 ,simpson1 and published by ,randolph1 which will give itself to the broader aspects and principles of missionary work1 and to a compilation of fresh intelligence from all quarters4 ,we rejoice in all such methods for the diffusion of knowledge1 and the stimulation of interest1 in carrying out 8the great commission40 99 99 99 99 99 8,through the ,light ,continent0 is a comely octavo in elegant type1 from the ,london press1 giving the observations of ,william ,saunders on a tour taken through our country in #ahgg-h4 ,in a chapter upon 8,education in ,atlanta10 after speaking of the ,public ,schools1 he says3 8,one of the most interesting institutions of ,atlanta is the ,university for the education of colored persons1 under the superintendence of ,professor ,ware4 ,the ,atlanta ,university has #age students 7the last catalogue made them #bdd71 half of whom pay the fees and cost of board4 ,many young negroes have worked1 and saved up #bjj or #cjj in order to come to the ,university4 ,it will thus be seen that the energy which the negroes are manifesting to obtain education is not confined to the ordinary work of the ,board of ,schools1 but extends to the higher branches of learning4 ,about #ge of the students are girls1 and their progress is regarded as universally satisfactory4 ,professor and ,mrs4 ,ware1 who have devoted their lives to this work with true missionary zeal1 are now much cheered to find their labors recognized and encouraged in quarters from which persistent opposition was formerly experienced4 ,when they came to ,atlanta1 any manifestation of regard for the blacks was looked upon as an act of hostility to the whites2 but a great change has taken place in public opinion1 and it is now generally felt that national advancement requires the elevation of the negro race1 and those who undertake their education are no longer regarded with disfavor4 ,there are many societies in the ,northern ,states for promoting numerous enterprises amongst the negroes4 ,before reaching ,atlanta1 ,i noticed a large crowd of negroes at one of the wayside stations1 and found the occasion to be the leaving of a missionary1 who had been working amongst them for two or three years1 and was then changing his station4 ,the respect and regard paid to him and to his wife were pleasant to see2 the missionary was a most intelligent travelling companion1 evidently devoted to his work in the genuine spirit of ,christianity40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,twenty ,,per ,,cent4 ,the enthusiasm evinced at the last ,annual ,meeting1 our freedom from the long-borne burden of our debt1 the general interest which seemed to be renewed in the welfare of the ,freedmen1 and the commencing and anticipated prosperity in the financial world1 all conspired to encourage us to plan and prepare for an enlarged work and more abundant results4 ,in carrying out these purposes1 the ,executive ,committee have appropriated about twenty per cent4 more than in the previous year to the ,southern field4 ,the total receipts thus far have been very gratifying1--and yet1 when we come to analyze them1 we find that they are1 in a larger measure than formerly1 sent to us to be appropriated to special departments of the work1 or more often to special work not included in our estimates4 ,this is both gratifying and embarrassing3 gratifying1 because it indicates an increasing familiarity with the details of our work1 and special sympathy with this or that portion of the whole2 but embarrassing1 because it cannot fail to be a diversion of funds which have been anticipated by us to meet the appropriations already made to new fields1 and often to create1 instead of covering1 expense4 ,we recognize these needs1 of student aid1 of woman's work1 and of special endowment1 and we would not have these particular demands neglected4 ,it is only that if all the money were to be thus specifically applied by the donors1 there would be none left for the main work1 on which the ability to carry on all the specialties depends4 ,don't starve the body in order to enlarge the hand or the foot4 ,the best growth of all is that which comes from the food1 which enters by the mouth into the stomach1 and1 vitalized1 is carried through the whole system4 ,if you appropriate all the fuel on the steamer to the donkey engines1 what will you do with the great machinery whose work it is to revolve the main propeller8 ,if in your city water-works1 you enlarge the side supply pipes and leave the old mains1 you get not more1 but less1 water into the houses4 ,what do we ask1 then8--#a4 ,that your special appropriations be special gifts1 additions to1 and not diversions of1 the moneys you are wont to give to the general work of the ,association4 #b4 ,that you do not fail in your church1 or from your private purse1 to give us something this year4 #c4 ,that as you have encouraged us to lay out a larger work1 you send us for general uses at least twenty per cent4 more than you did last year4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,new ,,plea4 ,henceforth the basis of our appeal to the churches ought to be gratitude1 not necessity2 thankfulness1 not the cry of sharp distress2 the impulse kindled at the sight of opening fields1 widening opportunities1 intelligent appreciation of service done and rewarding results4 ,the large additions to the churches in the foreign field1 their increasing spirit of benevolence1 the awakening interest in the cause of education1 the world-wide readiness and call for helpers1 the cheering indications of an abundant harvest of souls1 soon to be gathered1 the overwhelming demand in our own land for immediate work upon the frontier and at the ,south1 among the depressed races and the incoming population1 the return of prosperous times1 and the ever-pressing command of ,christ1 are considerations so potent1 so eloquent in their united plea1 that the first thought of him who listens is1 8,how can any ,christian heart resist the new plea60 ,what can hinder a most liberal investment in causes that promise such rich returns8 ,instead of exhausting all the strength of the crew at the pumps in a desperate endeavor to save the ship from sinking1 has the time not come1 when1 with canvas all spread1 and the ship sea-worthy1 rightly headed and well under way1 the main question shall be1 how to touch every harbor1 explore every river1 sail every inland sea1 and leave the precious freighting of the ,gospel at every port around the globe8 ,is it quite creditable to our piety1 our devotion1 our loyalty to ,christ1 that we can resist appeals based upon love1 goodness1 merciful interposition1 glorious enlargement1 and wait until we are crowded to a reluctant response by the plea of dire necessity1 overshadowing peril8 ,there are most cheering indications that the new plea is becoming effectual4 ,we are informed of a number of instances in which churches have lately nearly or quite doubled their contributions to the ,american ,board1 and that1 too1 apparently with great heartiness and joy4 ,gifts1 also1 from some private and unexpected sources have been a cheering indication of the advance movement4 ,the same indications are1 to a certain extent1 true of the other ,societies4 ,a mid-summer appeal for larger and extra contributions1 in order to prevent a deficit1 ought to be anticipated1 and made impossible1 by ample gifts now4 ,the volume of offerings during the first half of the year1 ought to be so large as to remove all anxiety concerning the state of the treasuries of these ,societies when their accounts close4 ,how pleasant1 if1 at the annual meetings1 the friends could be surprised with reports of a surplus instead of deficits4 ,ought there not to be a stern purpose to pay as we go1 and to pay with sufficient liberality to enable us to go with vigor and dispatch to the utmost bound of a rapidly increasing demand8 ,may the plea of great interposition1 great opportunity and great ability find fitting response4--,the ,advance4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,congregationalism ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,we reprint the following article from the ,christian ,recorder1 the able organ of the ,african ,methodist ,episcopal ,church4 ,it is a significant endorsement of the church work done by the ,association1 and from those who are most profoundly concerned in the ,christian elevation of the colored people of the land4 ,we have not even omitted the sharp criticism of the approving words of those who gathered at ,chicago to review our work1 hoping that we may thus escape the charge of 8,phariseeism0 in accepting the commendations and congratulations of our brethren of the ,a4 ,m4 ,e4 ,church3 8,the thirty-third ,annual ,report of the ,american ,missionary ,association is before us4 ,we wish that we could place the ,report in the hands of every ,a4 ,m4 ,e4 preacher in the land4 ,years ago we called attention to the fact that the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 was destined to become the strongest competitor the ,a4 ,m4 ,e4 would find in the ,south4 ,as we declared1 it is even now seen4 ,the twenty-three ,congregational churches of #ahfi have become sixty-seven in #ahgi4 ,but it may be said1 what is sixty-seven churches with a membership of #d1fjj1 compared to our thousands8 ,they would not be much1 to be sure1 were they of the same general material4 ,but they are not4 ,they are1 as it were1 a picked body4 ,in a sense they may be said to occupy the same relation to our ,church as the regular army sustains to the volunteer force of the country4 ,and we all know what that means4 ,a thousand regulars can do the work of ten thousand volunteers4 ,is it asked1 ,how is this8 ,the answer is at hand4 ,each ,congregational church grew out of the school which the ,congregational preacher in the person of a teacher taught4 ,knowing his material1 and wielding it much as the potter wields the clay1 he occupied for his church a position decidedly advantageous2 and the result shows that he has not failed to profit by it4 8,in nothing that we have said is it to be supposed that we are in wrath at their manifest success4 ,of course1 we have no patience with the spirit of ,phariseeism breathed forth in the report of the ,committee on ,church ,work in the ,south4 ,nothing that the typical ,pharisee of the ,new ,testament said excels it2 but for the work itself of these1 our companions in the kingdom and patience of ,jesus ,christ1 we entertain the highest possible respect2 begging1 however1 the privilege of suggesting that next year's report be not so strenuously self-complacent4 8,and now we repeat what we have so often said to our brother ministers1 especially of the ,south1 where they are brought in contact with this energetic body of men3 ,know1 once for all1 that the ,church possessed of the best cultured heads and the best cultured hearts1 is to win4 ,that we are infinitely stronger in numbers to-day than are the ,congregationalists1 argues nothing for the future4 ,it is with churches as with everything else1 the fittest survives4 ,if ,african ,methodism prove to be that fittest1 it will survive4 ,if not1 it must inevitably pass away1 and only be remembered as a thing of the past4 ,to be the fittest1 it is required that she banish all ignorance1 all immorality and superstition from her midst4 ,this must be done1 let the cost be what it may4 ,thin out the ministry of the church until there shall not be found an ignorant man nor a bad man in the ranks4 ,thin out the church itself4 ,expel the vicious4 ,drive out the notoriously bad4 ,have a clean church4 ,let such steps as these be taken1 and ,african ,methodism will have a future that will be to the glory of ,god and the best interests of mankind4 ,but if she draw back1 let her remember that ,god can take no pleasure in her40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,ignorance ,,of ,,the ,,negro ,,question4 ,from a paper read by ,w4 ,n4 ,armstrong1 ,esq41 before the ,yale ,alumni ,association of ,new ,york in ,january1 as printed in ,the ,present ,century3 ,there is an astounding ignorance in the ,north regarding the conditions and relations of the blacks and whites of the ,south4 ,the ,north in full control of the ,national ,government for many years1 has had before it a vast and complicated problem in statesmanship4 ,instead of working at it intelligently1 it has lost itself in a fog of political prejudice1 and is not ready at this late day to take an honest look into the matter4 ,for the last fifteen years what have we known of the ,south1 especially of the blacks8 ,what steps have we taken to ascertain the actual truth regarding four millions of negroes whom we suddenly railroaded into our political system8 ,when the ,general ,government wished to obtain facts concerning the geological1 botanical and mineral character of the ,western territory1 it sent out experts skilled in examining1 testing1 classifying and surveying4 ,these men were kept in the field for years1 and their reports fill a score of volumes1 and now we know something about the plains and the mountains4 ,for the intricate social questions of the ,south1 that vast tract of unknown land1 that section of the ,dark ,continent in ,america1 we have neither expert or surveyor1 or intelligent process of examination1 though the demands for accuracy in social science are as imperative as in physical4 ,visiting statesmen have been there4 ,but was a visiting statesman ever known to report a fact which hurt his party8 ,northern men who are in the ,south for the purpose of getting office will not tell the truth1 because it may bear against them4 ,southern men1 as a rule1 do not report the real facts1 because they are prejudiced4 ,northern men who have become prosperous in business at the ,south1 long since discovered that silence was golden1 and their lips are sealed to the public4 ,the testimony of the blacks is the most unreliable of all for reasons which will be given hereafter4 ,the poor ,northern men who have failed to make a fortune in the ,south have a grievance1 and cannot be trusted4 ,it is upon the newspaper correspondent that the ,north has relied mainly for information4 ,but he is always under limitations4 ,one of them 7whom you all know by reputation7 said to me--8,we correspondents are not sent here to find out the actual truth1 but to support the theories of the papers which send us4 ,it won't do for me to say in my letters that the nigger is to blame1 when the editorial columns of my paper say the white men are in the wrong40 ,the newspaper makes its theory first1 or it inherits a theory1 and then sends out for facts to fit it4 ,does not every one know beforehand how every daily paper in this city will treat any given political event8 ,the best sources of information regarding the blacks are his educators4 ,these men1 all of them from the ,north1 know something about the negro4 ,though little enough as yet1 ,congress has never asked these teachers to tell what they know about him4 ,facts regarding the lives or the motives of men are not obvious4 ,the newspaper correspondent cannot reach them in an hour1 or even in a year4 ,i have been personally familiar with a number of events in the ,south4 ,i have never known one of these to be correctly reported4 ,has any lawyer of this city ever known one of his cases to be reported accurately in the daily press8 ,truth seems to be in a deep well everywhere4 ,the ,herald says ,edison's light is a great success4 ,the ,nation is doubtful about it4 ,an electrician of rare skill tells me it is a humbug4 ,if we cannot get at the truth about matters near at home1 what shall be expected regarding matters in a distant section of the country8 ,the ,republican believes what his newspaper tells him about the ,south1 and the ,democrat does not believe it4 ,they never unite for investigation4 ,the historian will say hereafter that the real outrage was in our criminal neglect to ascertain the truth4 ,it is easy to see that it is supremely difficult to get at the facts about two races jostling together1 like huge vessels thumping and pounding against each other in a rolling sea4 ,last year the negro paper in ,charleston1 ,south ,carolina1 advocated the election of a ,democratic mayor4 ,the ,republican papers had no use for that fact4 ,it did not indicate the existence of outrages4 ,it was rather in the line of what ,tyndall calls the tragedy of science--a beautiful theory killed by an incontrovertible fact4 ,for two years the ,democratic party of ,georgia has been so broken up that as many as six or seven independent ,democratic tickets in local issues have been in the field in many counties1 and the white candidate1 who has captured a negro vote1 sees to it with rifle and revolver that no other white opponent interferes with that black vote4 ,facts like these occur by the hundred in ,southern politics1 but the ,republican press ignore them4 ,the ,northern men who are educating the negro regard ,captain ,thompson1 superintendent of public schools in ,south ,carolina1 as one of the most efficient men of the ,south in extending negro education2 but the ,tribune calls him a bloody-shirt orator4 ,the negro teacher is at present his best friend1 and his evidence about the whites should be credible if not conclusive4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,an ,,illustrated ,,press4 ,we have received two communications lately in regard to the importance of the ,press in the education of the colored people--one from an esteemed friend in the ,west1 urging that other institutions should follow the example of ,hampton and ,talladega in publishing papers4 ,we are not sure that this is altogether desirable4 ,there must be many favoring conditions to make it a success2 otherwise there is a certainty of pecuniary loss and wasted effort4 ,the other letter is from an ,english missionary in the ,west ,indies1 who thus states the case as to the value of periodical literature to supplement the influences of the church and the school3 8,there remains1 as a means of elevating and advancing the colored people1 the ,press4 ,the periodical ,press has been of untold service in promoting the civilization of the ,english and ,american white laborers4 ,it has come into their homes1 arousing them1 week by week1 with fresh power and stimulus4 ,it has filled their homes with pictures of beauty1 which delighted themselves and their children1 and taught them1 indirectly1 7and therefore most effectually17 lessons of thrift1 neatness and refinement4 ,every picture of a clean1 neatly-dressed child1 of a well-kept home1 of a happy fireside group1 etc41 etc41 carried its lesson and left its impress1 suggesting imitation1 and stimulating efforts for improvement4 8,now1 what periodicals are there in the whole wide world that will thus encourage1 stimulate and arouse the colored people8 ,not one4 ,i have not met with any ,english or ,american publication at all suited to their needs4 ,it is a common remark of the people here1 when asked to adopt some reform3 #8,that will do for white people2 but it is not for we4' ,and if the ,british ,workman1 or any similar paper1 is placed in their hands1 it but intensifies this feeling4 ,the contrast between themselves and white people is constantly before them4 ,week after week they will see pictures of pleasant homes and scenes in home life1 and in every case these are connected with the home of the white man4 ,if1 by chance1 some colored face is shown1 it is as a curiosity1 like a ,modoc ,indian1 a ,chinaman or a ,zulu4 8,what is urgently needed is something that will meet the needs of colored laborers1 in periodical literature1 as the needs of the white laboring classes are now met4 ,i think that there should without delay be established in ,america some new periodical--or some periodical now established should be so modified in the manner of conducting it--that1 pursuing the broad lines of humanity1 would secure two things3 8#a4--;,in the illustrations1 the manhood of the colored man would receive recognition1 and his home1 his children1 incidents of his life1 would appear from time to time1 in such way as to convey to all colored people a feeling of emulation1 a hope and inspiration1 stimulating them to achieve better things for themselves4 8#b4--;,in the letter-press1 care would be taken to avoid those figures of speech which carry with them an implied degradation of the colored people4 ,to illustrate1 what is #8foul' would not be made synonymous with what is #8black4'0 ,there is certainly sound reason in the above suggestions1 and it would seem that good results might follow the proposed plan4 ,just how it is to be done is the question4 ,the paying constituency of such a paper would probably be too small to make it a matter of mere business enterprise4 ,perhaps to some one the good to be accomplished may seem large enough and direct enough to warrant the needed outlay of thought1 time and capital4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,items ,,from ,,the ,,field4 ,,raleigh1 ,n4 ,c4--,great religious interest is reported throughout to school and pray1 or go out in the woods till they were converted1 and then they couldn't help it4 ,we have a daily prayer-meeting in the school-house1 in which all take part4 ,sometimes we have open meetings for the children4 ,we have nightly revival meetings1 in which the children are taking hold as far as it seems advisable4 ,later4--,one ,saturday1 four came to tell us of sins forgiven4 readiness1 the brethren of the church are already quickened1 and the meetings have been very encouraging from the start4 ,the members have taken hold with commendable zeal1 and seem to be thoroughly united4 ,the meeting last night 7,march #c;d7 was almost a ,pentecostal season4 ,there are fifteen or twenty inquirers1 of the most hopeful class of young men and women1 and some intelligent middle-aged men4 ,the work is quiet and deep1 without noise or nonsense1 and seems to be spreading every day4 ,,selma1 ,,ala4--,when ,i last wrote1 ,i think we were anticipating the week of prayer think the church is in quite a flourishing condition4 ,since the week of prayer1 we have sustained three or four cottage meetings every week1 with good results1 and with the ,literary ,society1 advantages to result directly from education of ,indian youths1 it is represented in support of the measure that the presence of a number of children from each tribe at schools in the ,east will be a most efficient guarantee of good behavior on the part of the tribes4 ,it would seem1 judging from the meagre opportunities for inspection offered by a single visit to ,carlisle1 that the movement promises to be an effectual aid1 if not ultimately one of the chief instruments1 in settling the vexed ,indian problem4 ,if1 however1 only a part of that which is expected is actually realized1 still arrival of several caravans of ivory from ,manyuema4 ,we are doing a little better with the garden just now4 ,one of our new men formerly worked in an ,arab's garden1 and under his advice and care we the pastor has baptized #aej4 ,i have never before labored in a ,sabbath-school where ,i have felt so manifestly the ,spirit accompanying the word4 ,it seemed to sink deep into the hearts and take root there1 and a harvest of souls is the result4 ,the pastor thinks the converts were more intelligent than usual1 and he imputed it to the instruction they had received in the ,sabbath-school4 ,my method of instruction is1 to expound the ,scriptures verse by verse1 as read by each scholar1 making special application to each one individually1 and so each one feels as if he had a portion4 ,sabbath before last1 ,i had the blest privilege of seeing forty-three of the converts all seated together in the front seats1 and it was to me an affecting sight4 ,all ages were represented there from the little child to the man of grey hairs4 ,i spoke to them of the joy it gave me to see them occupying such a position1 and of the joy to the angels of ,god over them1 for if there is joy in ,they seem to be guilty of the whole category of sins1 but1 perhaps1 their untruthfulness is most prominent4 ,we cannot have a self-reporting system in school1 but there are some noble exceptions to the general rule4 ,the most pitiable objects are those women who have families1 but never had husbands4 ,one such woman last fall told me that she was going to gather 8shoemake0 7shumac7 leaves that wet40 ,i guess ,he heard her1 for she is well4 ,in contrast with this1 the woman who washes for us saves up her wages and buys just what she and her child really need4 ,the women have not made as much advancement as the men2 but there is good reason for this4 ,they have gone to the field as regularly as the men1 and have had their cooking and housework to do2 and1 in addition to this1 they have borne a child every year or two4 ,when they come to church they have these small children to care for4 ,they were pleased when they learned that the 8new minister0 was glad to see them and their signs and superstitious notions4 ,our little girl1 ,addie1 showed a very small hen's egg to some little girls4 ,one of them said3 8,my mother never allows us to take one into the house1 it is bad luck2 but it is good luck to throw it over the house1 and we always do that40 ,mr4 ,c4 and ,i both teach six hours per day4 ,sometimes after school we take the carriage and go to see some sick person4 ,last week we went three miles to see one poor sick woman1 who has lost the use of one eye and is nearly blind in the other4 ,she is a great sufferer1 but said1 8,my many afflictions and tribulations bring me near the ,lord1 and ,i am so proud to see you all40 ,last ,saturday we went four miles to see an old man who is probably on his death-bed4 ,he was sixty-three years a slave1 is a ,christian1 has united with the church since we came1 and said that if he never met us here on earth again1 he hoped to in heaven4 ,we sent him some food suitable for him4 ,we see so much destitution that we can't help giving until we feel it4 ,we do almost entirely without butter1 and frequently without sugar4 ,we live very plainly1 but contentedly4 ,one man told in church how much good it did him1 when of their old ways1 which most of the people like best1 and so they are held by the other churches4 ,the large rice planters are doing nothing for them1 only to keep them on their farms and get all the work out of them they can1 and pay them as little as possible for their work4 ,how is this done8 ,by giving them great feasts on the ,sabbath4 ,at these feasts they have the colored people come into the big house 7this means the white people's house7 and shout for them1 as it is called here1 but ,i call it dancing4 ,they are given ginger snaps1 rum and wine4 ,this kind of a party1 or feast1 or shout1 was given last ,sunday 7they are called by all these names74 ,i am told that the colored people on a certain plantation ate two boxes of ginger snaps1 and drank two gallons of wine and four gallons of rum4 ,they have them on the ,sabbath so as not to stop the work4 ,this is the way they hold them4 ,i said in my haste last ,sabbath1 if the white man was to tell them that on the other side of ,hell they could get as much rum and wine as they could get free1 many of them would try to cross over4 ,many of them have given up all they have for it1 and will go anywhere to get it4 ,this is session of the ,georgia ,conference at ,savannah1 a debate took place on the subject of the church and school work as of necessity going together in this ,southern field1 which impressed me deeply4 ,it was mainly carried on by the young colored brethren1 both ministers and laymen1 and in matter and manner showed that they knew whereof they spoke1 and were deeply impressed with its importance4 ,any person who may have doubted the vital necessity of the school to the church work here1 would surely have been convinced by the earnest arguments of these brethren1 most of whom came to the church through the educational department of the mission work4 ,said one young preacher3 8,the school is the primary department of the church4 ,it trains the children and youth to think1 and hence to accept of a thoughtful religion like ours1 instead of the mere shouting and emotional style to which the ignorant and untrained cling4 ,the true religion is one which teaches us to love ,god and our neighbor supremely1 and this can be done best by the intelligence which comes only through the school training40 ,another said3 8,our people never had any mental training1 or any encouragement to think for themselves1 and did not know how1 until the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 schools awakened these powers4 ,we1 as a race1 are not naturally a reasoning people4 ,we are too much governed by impulse1 by emotion1 by instinct1 by passions1 and too easily offended1 with little self-control4 ,slavery was a very poor mental discipline1 and when freedom came1 there were many extravagant ideas and ignorant impulses that led the people to extremes4 ,the utter lack of public schools for our race made us at first prize most highly the advantages offered so generously by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,afterward1 as the slumbering intelligence slowly awoke1 we saw not only the intrinsic value of education1 but we were more able to appreciate the kindness which suggested the sending of these faithful teachers and missionaries4 ,gratitude prompted us1 in many cases1 to break away from the old superstitious churches1 and growing enlightenment helps us to see more clearly the superior advantages of an intelligent religion4 ,the consecrated teachers of the ,association have many of them done grand missionary work1 although very few of them are open to the charge of sectarianism4 ,congregationalism1 by its broad1 liberal1 unsectarian policy of churches and schools1 has done a vast amount of good to all the other denominations4 ,they are being leavened more and more by true intelligence1 and the ancient foundations of ignorance and hierarchy are slowly giving way4 ,upon their ruins shall arise more beautiful temples to ,god1 more enlightened worship1 more worthy conceptions of daily life and religious duty40 ,another speaker claimed that 8,the day-school brings about sympathy of the day scholars with the church and ,sunday-school work4 ,the religious exercises of the schools cause the impression that there is a soul as well as a brain to be trained4 ,the knowledge that the teachers are universally engaged in ,sunday-school work1 by the very law of cause and effect1 calls attention to that work also4 ,the sympathy that always exists between the preacher and teachers1 and the hearty interest in the children that is shown by the ministers1 cause both parents and children to think that the work is all one1 as it really is4 ,new ,england #8blossoms as the rose' to-day1 because the church and the school-house have always been built together1 and in their mutual work are as inseparable as the ,siamese twins4 ,may the day hasten when it shall be so in the ,south40 ,the young delegate from ,atlanta said3 8,the first church of ,atlanta is the outgrowth of the ,storrs ,school1 whose devoted teachers have always sought after the spiritual as well as the mental welfare of their scholars4 ,they have been true missionaries and worthy co-laborers in the ,gospel with the pastors of the church40 ,a young preacher1 who is also the successful teacher of the day-school in his parish1 said that 8,the training of the school children to be punctual at the morning roll-call1 teaches also the very necessary habit of punctuality at church1 in which our people are so deficient4 ,the promptness1 the discipline of order1 cleanliness1 good behavior and attention1 which is taught in school1 has also a corresponding effect in the church services4 ,if our people were educated and enlightened1 perhaps the church could get on without the school2 but in their ignorance they must be taught to think1 before they can get a right idea of ,bible religion4 ,the intellect must go with the heart1 preparing the way for the coming of the ,lord4 ,superstition is still a formidable enemy in our church work1 and nothing but sanctified intelligence will ever defeat that adversary40 ,said another delegate3 8,i came into the church through the night-school4 ,i was working hard all day and could not attend day-school1 but went at night and studied as well as ,i could4 ,there ,i first heard of the ,congregational church4 ,i found by inquiry that it was a church which had been very active in the anti-slavery times1 and believed in free speech1 free schools1 free churches and equal rights in church and state4 ,that attracted me1 and ,i inquired more1 until finally ,god forgave my sins and ,i united with the church4 ,i love more and more the freedom and fraternity ,i find1 and ,i believe in the church1 which makes so much of schools1 and has educated so many of my people40 ,said another3 8,the church must go with the school1 because education alone only sharpens the mind for greater mischief4 ,in the very nature of things1 every school teacher ought to be a true ,christian1 has passed4 ,the present movement differs from the preceding1 if at all1 in a more intelligent grasp of the truth1 and in a deeper spiritual tone4 ,the past summer was a time of preparation for the
