review of the state of religion in the ,congregational churches of ,south ,carolina and of ,georgia1 during this first year of their ,general ,conference1 shows abundant occasion of gratitude for general prosperity and spiritual blessing4 ,the fact that all of our fourteen churches except one1 have been represented in this ,conference by their ministers and delegates1 reveals an interest in its meetings1 and in the doctrine of the fellowship of the churches1 that is truly delightful4 ,in this connection we cannot refrain from noting the grace of ,god conferred upon the churches in their custom of providing the necessary traveling expenses of their delegates4 ,we hope that such messengers of the churches will reciprocate this consideration1 and magnify their office1 by making a full report of this and all such convocations to their respective assemblies for worship4 ,we gratefully recognize the increase of our total membership by #ced1 making the present number #idi4 ,one new church has been organized1 that of ,cypress ,slash1 which reports to us a membership of #ed2 a temporary cabin1 built as a place for church and school1 with the purpose soon to erect a more comely and permanent sanctuary2 and also a new young minister who1 with his wife1 is already reaping missionary fruit4 ,we note with gratification that every one of our churches is supplied with the ministry of the word1 except that at ,marietta1 whose pastor1 ,rev4 ,s4 ,p4 ,smith1 has been transferred to ,washington ,city for the purpose of building up the #b;d ,congregational ,church at the capital4 ,so1 with the same exception1 every one of our churches has its own house of worship4 ,some of these are commodious and tasteful2 others are very plain2 but all are places of sanctuary comfort1 and the worshippers are striving each year to increase their comeliness and convenience4 ,during the year1 three of these congregations have added to their meeting-houses the attraction of the church-going bell4 ,among a people1 few of whom have clocks or watches1 the church bell is their time-keeper1 and the promoter of that promptness which adds a charm to the services of public worship4 ,the doctrine of church discipline as a means of grace has been illustrated by a heroic use of the pruning knife upon these vines1 that they may bring forth more fruit4 ,the seeking of a clean membership is essential to the healthfulness and well-being of the churches4 ,the cause of temperance has been kept near the heart of our members4 ,one church1 the ,pilgrim1 at ,woodville1 has a large and influential ,band of ,hope4 ,all preach temperance and require its practice among their members4 ,we are deeply convinced that the habit of intemperance is the devil's best grip upon the poor and lowly people among whom we have our lot and our work1 and that total abstinence is the only consistent rule for ,christians4 ,in a community where pastors and officers and members of ,protestant churches indulge in the practice of drinking liquors1 we feel called upon to bear an unremitting and uncompromising testimony against this violation of the spirit and the precept of the ,gospel4 ,we are confirmed in the wisdom of the union of the school-work and the church-work in our evangelizing process4 ,the school prepares the way for the church4 ,it brings along the young and hopeful material for the church membership4 ,the church garners up such fruit4 ,it reacts upon the school and the community by its educating and elevating influence4 ,in our ideal1 both unite in the one purpose of saving and edifying the souls of men4 ,we desire to express our sincere gratefulness in view of the devoted and self-denying labor of the teachers in the schools associated with our churches4 ,the higher schools and colleges within our bounds have gone along upon the plane of their former success4 ,the ,avery ,institute1 at ,charleston1 has passed through a change of administration without any diminution of its members or lowering of its high grade of scholarship4 ,the ,normal ,school at ,greenwood1 ,s4 ,c41 has held on in its beneficent way1 enjoying the fine building and campus of an old time ,baptist ,college4 ,the ,beach ,institute in this city1 with its cultivated and consecrated corps of seven teachers1 with its fine body of pupils1 with its thorough discipline and its decided moral and religious tone1 is a power for good in this community and in this part of the ,state4 ,the ,dorchester ,academy at ,midway1 the ,lewis ,high ,school at ,macon1 and the ,storrs ,school at ,atlanta1 have kept steadily upon the line of their extensive and beneficent influence4 ,the ,atlanta ,university maintains its high position as to classical and normal scholarship1 and as to moral and religious tone1 approved by the authorities of the ,commonwealth and also by the favor of ,heaven1 in the enrolling during the year of a couple of score of its students among the disciples of the ,great ,master4 ,its independent ,union ,church1 with #fg members1 although not belonging to our body1 is to us a sister in ,christ1 for whom our prayers and sympathies shall ever abound4 ,its ,faculty consists of three graduates of ,yale and one each of ,harvard1 ,dartmouth and ,amherst ,colleges1 and of half a dozen cultivated ladies4 ,to these it has just added ,prof4 ,a4 ,w4 ,farnham1 who is introducing the most approved normal methods1 not only for the benefit of the normal scholars but of all in the ,university4 ,more than a dozen of its graduates are now teaching high schools in leading cities of the ,state of ,georgia1 and so starting from these centres1 radiating influences that shall bless many more communities4 ,we give thanks to ,god for the bequest of #ej1jjj1 by which the ,university will now be able to add still more to its spacious accommodations4 ,we greatly rejoice in the new feature of the work within our limits1 that of lady missionaries4 ,we have four of them4 ,one of these has been located at ,charleston1 one at ,miller's ,station1 one at ,macon1 and one in ,atlanta4 ,woman's work for women and children in these communities1 we consider a ,christly service of the utmost value4 ,woman can enter the homes as the pastor cannot2 and yet she will make work for him in following up her discoveries4 ,her ready sympathy and happy tact will help her in stimulating to greater domestic comfort1 and will aid her in doing good through many ways that are peculiarly her own4 ,we are comforted by the educated young men who are coming forward to minister in our churches4 ,besides those who have been raised up in the 8,beach0 to minister to the churches that cluster about it1 we are happy in the coming of four graduates of the ,theological department of ,talladega ,college in ,alabama1 three of whom are this week receiving ordination at the hands of our own church councils1 and the other is the moderator of one of these ,convocations4 ,we are happy to express grateful obligation to that ,christian institution in another ,state for this gift of her cultured sons1 who are to us also a part of the ascension gift of our blessed ,lord4 ,we are devoutly grateful to ,god for the spiritual refreshings that have been enjoyed this year in our churches and schools4 ,some have had special seasons of revival4 ,others have had the dew in the fleece4 ,many souls have been brought into fellowship with ,christ1 and ,christians have1 we trust1 been advanced somewhat in the process of purification4 ,we cannot conclude this annual narrative without recording our gratitude to the ,american ,missionary ,association1 which1 under ,god1 has been the occasion within a short period of all this school and church development as now represented by the ,conference of ,georgia4 ,we remind ourselves1 also1 that this is only one of seven of these ,conferences which have been the outgrowth of the same general ,christianizing process at the ,south4 ,we magnify the grace of ,god bestowed upon the churches and friends who have furnished that ,association with the funds1 the prayers and the sympathies1 that were essential to this great work4 8,this is the ,lord's doing2 it is marvelous in our eyes40 ,j4 ,e4 ,,roy4 ,,john ,,mcintosh4 ,p4 ,w4 ,,young4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,educational ,,report4 ,at the ,georgia ,conference the ,committee on ,education make the following report3 ,that 8,education is the handmaid of ,religion0 has become an accepted maxim4 ,to be remembered everywhere1 it is of especial importance in this field4 ,religion has here been corrupted by ignorance1 and has often degenerated into superstition4 ,a devout and imaginative spirit has been betrayed into serious errors and gross excesses in the name of truth and godliness4 ,more knowledge1 more culture of mind1 is necessary in many cases to prepare the way for the perception of the truth4 ,the one great object of the ,church of ,christ in its labor among men is to save the souls of men by holding forth the word of ,life2 but to attain this1 the ,church must help to teach them what that word is1 and how to read and study it for themselves4 ,the ,gospel seeks to prepare men1 not only for the next life1 but for this life also4 ,it is fitted to bless the whole man1 physical and mental1 as well as spiritual4 ,education and ,gospel piety must go together4 ,the ,committee would1 therefore1 recommend the adoption of the following resolutions3 #a4 ,resolved1 ,that this ,conference desires to emphasize the fact that the past year's experience gives new occasion for gratitude that from the beginning of the ,american ,missionary ,association's work in this field1 the school and the church have been closely united4 #b4 ,resolved1 ,that it is the deliberate judgment of this ,conference that this field still requires the enlargement and vigorous prosecution of the school work1 as a necessary aid to the upbuilding of our churches4 #c4 ,resolved1 ,that the churches must not cease to pray fervently for those who are teaching in our elementary and higher schools1 and for their pupils1 that the instruction given and the mental culture gained may bear the stamp of ,christian consecration4 #d4 ,resolved1 ,that we desire to express our warm sympathy with our young people1 who1 in the face of many obstacles1 are bravely pressing forward in their studies1 to fit themselves for teachers or preachers1 and would urge them to get as thorough and complete an education as possible4 ,respectfully submitted1 ,c4 ,w4 ,,hawley1 ,t4 ,t4 ,,benson1 ,,wilson ,,callen1 ,committee4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,atlanta ,,miscellanies4 ,,by ,a ,,resident4 --,a ,christmas concert was observed by the ,sunday-school of the ,first ,congregational ,church of ,atlanta1 ,georgia4 ,it followed ,dr4 ,vincent's programme1 which1 with variations1 was rendered with great success4 ,the singing was excellent4 ,the recitations and the responsive readings of ,scripture were impressive4 ,the recitations on the platform1 of prose or poetry1 a score or more1 did not have a failure or a prompting4 ,every piece during the whole evening was about ,christmas4 ,the good reading and elocution were apparent as the result of the good training in the ,storrs ,school1 whose teachers are also instructors in the ,sunday-school4 ,pastor ,c4 ,w4 ,hawley seemed in his element as the leader of this service4 ,sup't ,roy made a talk at the close4 ,the school numbers two hundred and twenty-five4 ,it would greatly gladden the hearts of the friends of our work if they could only look in upon this and the many other such schools in the ,south4 ,atlanta has a monthly ,sunday-school ,teachers' ,institute4 ,pastor ,hawley attends it4 ,atlanta's ,county1 ,fulton1 has also a ,sunday-school ,association1 which convenes in the city quarterly4 ,at the last meeting1 as interest was warming up in favor of taking some more practical measures toward helping the colored ,sunday-schools1 it was found that the constitution limited the membership to such schools as were 8all white40 ,whereupon a resolution of interest and of encouragement was adopted4 ,at the last meeting of the ,state ,s4 ,s4 ,association1 held in ,macon1 a colored school in ,savannah applied for membership4 ,the matter was quieted for the time1 but it is said that it will come up again4 ,upon the recommendation of ,gov4 ,colquitt it is proposed to adopt the ,brooklyn idea of a ,children's ,day once a year2 this not only for the ,city but for the ,state4 ,in ,atlanta there are fourteen colored ,sunday-schools4 --,at an entertainment at the ,atlanta ,university1 during the holidays1 the ,field ,superintendent gave one of his addresses upon the map of the ,united ,states4 --,at the watch-night service in the ,trinity ,m4 ,e4 ,south ,church1 of ,atlanta1 one of the speakers1 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,potter1 a ,presiding ,elder1 dwelling upon the openings of benevolence during the last year1 expatiated at length upon the million of dollars given by one estate to the ,american ,board4 ,surely the children of light are beginning to do business upon something of the grand scale on which the children of this world project their schemes4 ,it was stated at that meeting that during the year1 under ,pastor ,heidt1 the ,trinity ,church had received two hundred members1 half of them upon confession of faith1 and had paid off a debt of twenty thousand dollars4 ,it seems that the ,m4 ,e4 ,general ,conference1 ,south1 has abolished the feature of a six months' probation4 ,only those are received who give evidence of conversion4 ,the form in receiving a member that night was quite ,congregational4 ,this church has also advanced upon the policy of its sister at the ,north1 in allowing a four years' pastorate1 instead of three4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,florida4 ,letter from ,rev4 ,geo4 ,henry4 ,,dear ,,sir3 ,i opened last ,monday a day-school in addition to our ,sunday-school4 ,the necessity of this step will be apparent when ,i tell you that there are fifty children in this place who wish to attend school1 but have been unable heretofore to do so1 as the distance to the nearest colored school is from four to seven miles from their homes4 ,only a few of the larger ones have been able to attend4 ,in my school ,i have dull and bright1 lazy and industrious children1 as you have in all other schools1 but taking them altogether1 they study as well and learn as quickly as any set of pupils ,i have ever seen4 ,i have one little girl who did not know the alphabet last ,monday1 but by the end of the week was able to read little stories from a ,reader rapidly and accurately4 ,i have never anywhere seen such progress made by a young child4 ,in view of the capability of the children to learn1 there can scarcely be reason to doubt that the deplorable mental condition of the adult ,freedmen is due to that institution which has been such a curse both to the slave and his owner4 ,the public schools are open from three to four months each year2 but so far they have been of very little use to the colored children1 as they have been1 as a rule1 taught by incompetent persons4 ,most of the colored schools have colored teachers1 and very few of them are either morally or intellectually qualified for the position4 ,for example1 the man who taught the school nearest to this place last winter used to bring his bottle with him to school4 ,a woman of bad character and only rudimentary education has the same school this winter2 yet this is one of the largest schools in the county4 ,in a conversation which ,i had with ,judge ,b----1 a member of the ,board of ,public ,instruction1 he said that 8the school money which had been spent for colored schools had been thrown away1 for the children had not learned anything40 ,this is very nearly a correct statement of the case1 for a bright child ten years of age would learn more in two months than boys #ai or #bj years old know who have attended these schools for years4 ,understand me1 ,i think this is the fault of the teachers and not of the pupils4 ,i believe that in my week-day school ,i shall be able to do as much for the improvement of the condition of the ,freedmen as in any other way1 and ,i am sure if you were here to look over the field you would agree with me4 ,our work in the ,sunday-school is also very encouraging2 not that the scholars are uniting with the church--for nearly all the older ones are members of churches now--but they are learning from the word of ,god those truths which are calculated to prepare them for useful lives in the earth and eternal happiness in the world to come4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,louisiana4 ,the ,schools and the ,churches4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,w4 ,s4 ,,alexander4 ,the work of education and evangelization among the ,freedmen in this ,state was never more hopeful4 ,by the provisions of the new constitution which was adopted at the recent election1 the rate of taxation has been greatly reduced1 and as a direct consequence1 the appropriation for school purposes will be correspondingly cut down4 ,the free colored schools will be the first to be struck by this wave of retrenchment4 ,many schools1 especially in the country parishes1 will be closed1 or1 at the best1 be maintained for a very brief period in the year4 ,new ,orleans will feel this matter as keenly as the country1 for the amount of taxation is strictly regulated by the new constitution4 ,only special gifts can possibly keep the schools up to the present standard4 ,one of the most prominent educators in the city said to me1 8,i would not raise unnecessarily the cry of alarm1 but a crisis is surely near at hand with our public schools40 ,the colored ,normal ,school will certainly be discontinued4 ,the ,peabody fund will probably not be available for ,louisiana another year4 ,all these events1 so unpropitious to the free school system of ,louisiana1 and so deeply to be deplored1 render our work all the more necessary1 and our prospect of enlarged usefulness the brighter4 ,when we see the grand opportunity opening before our beloved ,university--an opportunity which has not the remotest resemblance to the fictitious and dreamy--we try to forget the plaintive words1 8,hope deferred maketh the heart sick10 and rally our courage by the more inspiring prophecy1 8,the morning light is breaking40 ,when the glorious work of enlargement begins1 will it not be in order to start at the ,gulf of ,mexico and gradually work up8 ,we rather approve of that plan and are quite ready for it4 ,,church ,,work ,,in ,,louisiana4 8,we hold our own1 and something more10 is the word that comes up from the churches of our ,association4 ,our annual meeting will be held at ,terrebonne1 the first ,wednesday in ,april1 and the brethren are eagerly anticipating it4 ,congregationalism is a plant of slow growth among the colored people1 not from want of adaptation1 but from lack of money to push it into fields now unoccupied or uncultivated4 ,money is needed to give new enterprises substantial encouragement in their difficult 8beginnings0--to tide the pastors past the starvation point--to give them 8foothold0 till strength comes to them in the natural growth of a good enterprise4 ,the church at ,new ,iberia1 which welcomed our last annual conference1 and which is memorable as the scene of a most precious revival1 and suffered seriously in the loss1 by a furious wind storm in ,september1 of their tasteful and commodious chapel1 is work of grace1 which has been in progress during the past three months1 will appropriately find place in the columns of the ,,missionary4 ,during my connection with the prison school1 several seasons of refreshing have been witnessed1 and hundreds of the prisoners have expressed a hope in ,christ4 ,on returning from the ,north and resuming my duties as superintendent in the prison1 in ,september1 ,i noticed an unusual interest in the study of the ,bible lesson4 ,the remarks which were made at the close of the lesson were listened to with breathless interest4 ,the interest was so marked that it was determined to give an opportunity to those who might desire to present themselves for prayers4 ,this was done1 and upwards of one hundred prisoners presented themselves4 ,after a brief prayer-meeting1 the prisoners were dismissed4 ,on the next ,sabbath1 five or six made a profession of their faith in ,christ1 having been converted through the week4 ,the work thus begun went on for two months1 only one meeting for inquiry being held each week1 and that at the close of the ,sabbath-school4 ,another meeting was held on ,sabbath morning1 at which regular services were conducted by the chaplain4 ,each ,sabbath1 from three to six reported that they had found the ,saviour4 ,a deep religious interest pervaded the entire prison4 ,wherever little groups of prisoners were to be found1 their conversation was upon the subject of religion4 ,all the teachers felt that the ,lord was present in power4 ,at the end of two months thirty-five had found the ,saviour1 and ten or twelve backsliders had been reclaimed4 ,on the last ,sabbath of ,november an unusual scene was witnessed within the prison walls4 ,thirty-four prisoners were received into the prison church4 ,as the long row of prisoners1 arrayed in the stripes of the criminal1 stood up to take upon them the covenant vows of the church1 it was perceived that the work had been very great4 ,of the candidates1 eight or ten were baptized by sprinkling1 the rest by immersion4 ,ten or twelve remain to be taken into the church4 ,the influence of the work among the prisoners is seen to be very salutary4 ,the church service and the ,sabbath-school are the two bright spots in the lives of the prisoners4 ,from twenty to twenty-eight teachers1 of both sexes and colors1 ,northern and ,southern1 engage in the work4 ,three hundred pupils1 prisoners1 attend with remarkable regularity1 as the attendance is optional4 ,the influence of the religious work is to inspire the prisoners with hope1 and with a purpose to retrieve when ,i arrived1 a little late1 at the church1 having been detained to attend the burial of a baby1 ,i found a goodly number1 and the pastor was reviewing the last week's lesson4 ,we immediately proceeded with the lesson for the day1 after which ,i told them ,i thought we had better organize a ,sunday-school1 as ,i only wished to be a teacher1 and would rather some of their own number would be the officers4 ,to this they gladly assented1 and we organized4 ,we have three classes4 ,i furnish them with ,sunday-school papers1 as they have never had any4 ,twice1 as the hour for service approached1 the minister has given up preaching1 saying they learned much more studying the ,bible4 ,as we were leaving the church a brother said1 8,i believe you is going to be jest the building up about sending their children to a distant and unknown country4 ,they were superstitious about school and church influences4 ,would they trust the white man8 ,would they be sufficiently influenced by the desire for an education4 ,well1 ,captain ,pratt had both experience and faith2 he told us of his talks and prayer meetings with the prisoners in ,florida1 and of their desire for education1 and of the willingness of ,eastern ,christian friends to help them2 then we knelt down in the sitting-room of our mission home1 that ,sabbath evening1 and committed our way unto the ,lord4 ,all was in doubt2 some had refused to go2 the chiefs would not send their children2 but soon three youth 7boys of eighteen or twenty years of age7 came of their own accord and offered themselves4 ,they had been attending our school and had learned in a measure to trust us4 ,they said they knew it was a long way to go and a long time to stay1 and it would be hard2 but they were prepared to carry out their chimerical2 the interest in such work romantic2 and they don't believe in romance and chimeras4 ,we have sometimes met another class whose interest flags when they are brought in contact with the hard pages of the ,herald1 and often feel their hearts burn within them2 but if brought into actual1 daily contact with the toils1 the drudgeries of service1 the days of small things1 the months and years of discouragement through which1 with faith that would not falter1 ,god led his servants on to that which now makes those pages glow1 they would soon become disheartened1 possibly fault-finding1 as though funds and men were being wasted on a work that makes so little show4 ,we respectfully suggest to all such friends of our ,chinese work that they remain in the ,east1 and do not at present visit ,california2 for ,christ1 as found in the souls for whom we labor1 has no halo round his head--indeed1 ,he had none when ,he wrought in that carpenter's shop at ,nazareth2 when ,he walked1 with under gas-light till it is too late for our pupils to get to school4 ,at any rate1 many of them drop off2 the average declines1 and our hearts droop a little4 ,it would be so much easier to work1 if we could all the time be expanding1 increasing1 harvesting4 ,then1 often1 the pupils seem specially dull1 and this one or that one in whom we have become deeply interested1 and whom we supposed to have become somewhat enlightened1 discloses a depth of darkness which we do not like to fathom1 and shows that he has understood far less than we supposed4 ,among those whom we believe to be true followers of ,christ1 there crop out littlenesses of envy or jealousy or ill-humor1 that perhaps would call down on them swift condemnation1 did not all this remind us so much of what has stained our own ,christian life4 ,now if our romantic friends should drop in upon us at such times1 they might be sorely disappointed2 might feel that we had drawn on our fancies for some of our facts2 might possibly go away and add their own 8,amen0 to the scornful taunts of ,godless newspapers upon 8converted ,chinamen40 ,and yet just such experiences of difficulty and discouragement belong to ,christian work everywhere4 ,if they do not form a necessary part of the discipline and training of the church1 they certainly are unavoidable in the healing of sin-poisoned souls--in the education1 the leading out of men from darkness into light4 ,i write these things1 not because ,i have any special disappointments to communicate4 ,i have none4 ,and yet the state of the work just now is shadowed in these reflections4 ,i have sometimes fancied--and felt that it was no mere fancy--that ,i could see in the story of our little mission1 a tiny miniature of the history of the ,apostolic ,church4 ,we had our little ,pentecost to start with4 ,we had the glow of a new love1 the effervescence of a new life1 the fresh joy of fraternal fellowship2 prayer meetings carried1 against my protest1 for sheer delight in them1 on into the small hours1 by men who must be up and hard at work by six o'clock in the morning4 ,then after awhile we had our ,ananias--two of them1 since there was no wife to match ,sapphira4 ,and then we had disputes and little jealousies1 like those of the ,grecians against the ,hebrews1 and our scatterings by persecution and by other causes1 in which1 ,i rejoice to say1 our disciples1 like those of old1 went here and there1 preaching the word2 so that with all that there has been at times to start anxiety1 to test faith1 to chasten hope1 the work has kept moving on4 ,souls have been added constantly1 saved souls1 we trust4 ,much prayer has gone up to the throne of grace1 and earnest work has followed it1 and ,christ1 thank ,god1 has proved himself
