our communications from the ,southern field are very limited this month4 ,it is1 of course1 the time of vacation in all our ,southern institutions1 except a few of the public schools1 to the support of which we are contributing1 and from which we hear mainly through the larger schools of which their teachers are pupils or graduates4 ,soon the wheels will begin to revolve again1 we trust1 with greater effectiveness than ever before4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a confidential word from the ,editor to the members of the missionary and teaching force who occasionally write to the ,,missionary4--,your ,christianization of ,africa4 ,with their territorial and commercial interest in that dark continent1 ,british ,christians are all the more disposed to care for the religious welfare of the this season of the year1 and who are addicted to special efforts for the promotion of revivals in the ,winter time1 are sometimes surprised to hear of such movements at the ,south during the heat of ,summer4 ,at first it seems quite creditable to the piety of our colored brethren that they should warm up to such service in dog days4 ,but the reason for selecting this season for such service is the same as that which at the ,north locates it in the ,winter4 ,that is the slack time of the year4 ,the corn and the cotton have been laid by1 and now there is leisure before the time comes for picking and harvesting4 ,the ,association of ,south-west ,texas meets at the middle of ,july1 and refuses to fix any other date for assembling1 desiring to use that 8set time0 for some revival effort1 and expecting to bless the entertaining church in that way4 ,we are hearing that nearly all of our churches in the ,south have been making more or less of special effort4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,southern measure of consecration requisite on the part of those who are called to this missionary work among despised classes4 ,it is an unquestioning1 an unconditional obedience that is needed4 ,one may say3 8,others are staying at home and having easy times40 ,what is that to thee8 8,down there we may be sneered at and treated like pariahs40 ,what is that to thee8 8,it was easy up ,north to have been an qualification for this ,christly work4 ,it was a rigid scrutiny that set aside the few men that were to gain the victory of the ,lord at the hand of ,gideon4 ,a like carefulness of selection is necessary in this holy war4 ,it would enlist only those who give themselves to its cause with such alacrity that they stop not for personal ease1 but who lap their drink4 ,but the reward of those who thus follow the ,divine ,leader in this service is quick and ample4 ,they are a happy set of folks4 ,they love their work2 they love their people2 they have joy in their calling2 in this they are like not break the dies when ,he made the last of the ancient ,martyrs or of the ,puritan heroes4 ,in great emergencies he reproduces them after their kind4 ,the anti-slavery struggle needed them and they came forth1 and among them there was no braver man than the gentle and amiable ,,simeon ,s4 ,,jocelyn4 ,it is a mistake to suppose that the bold and determined men who take front rank in great moral conflicts are destitute of kindly impulses4 ,father ,jocelyn was utterly uncompromising where duty called1 yet ,i have seldom known a man of more tender sympathies1 of quicker1 almost womanly sensibility to sorrow or suffering4 ,nor are all such men1 as is often imagined1 so intent on pushing forward their great reforms as to overlook the rights of others4 ,father ,jocelyn was most scrupulous in regard to the minutest claims of all men1 even of his opponents4 ,nor are all such seemingly rash and headlong men lacking in caution4 ,father ,jocelyn was the most cautious man ,i ever knew4 ,indeed this trait was1 in some sense1 a hindrance to his activity1 for he instinctively saw the many adverse bearings and possible misconstructions to the course contemplated or to the document to be published4 ,the marvel is that such a man could ever have become an abolitionist--that he could have risked reputation1 property1 and even life itself1 in an enterprise so doubtful of success and beset with so many dangers to the peace of the church and the nation4 ,the only explanation is in his clear perception1 through all glosses1 of the path of duty1 and the overwhelming impulse of conscience to pursue it in spite of all dangers4 ,of such stuff are moral heroes made4 ,the piety of ,father ,jocelyn was sincere1 deep and all-pervading4 ,he was a man of prayer and of close communion with ,god1 active in ,christian labors in public and private1 and of a beautiful simplicity and transparency of character--a saintly man4 ,a ,puritan by birth and conscientious conviction1 his religious life was after the strictest model1 yet his tender sympathies rendered him kind as well as faithful in counsel or warning1 while his broad ,christian charity made him liberal toward all who loved the ,saviour4 ,father ,jocelyn was born in ,new ,haven1 ,ct41 in #agii1 and was early converted to ,christ4 ,he began active life as an engraver1 but relinquished a prosperous business to preach the ,gospel to the poor1 devoting his ministry to a feeble colored church in ,new ,haven4 ,the anti-slavery cause from the beginning had his warmest sympathies and most earnest co-operation4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association had no earlier or steadier friend4 ,when the ,amistad captives were landed in ,new ,london1 and prompt and persevering efforts were made to re-enslave them1 a committee of gentlemen was organized in ,new ,york to watch over their interests1 and at the head of that committee stands the name of ,s4 ,s4 ,jocelyn4 ,throughout the long struggle that secured their liberties and their return to their native land1 accompanied by a missionary and teacher1 ,mr4 ,jocelyn was constant in his active exertions2 and when at length that committee and other similar bodies were united in the formation of this ,association1 he was forward in founding1 and constant thereafter in sustaining the new organization4 ,he attended the meeting in ,albany when the ,association was formed4 ,he was its ,recording ,secretary from #ahdf to #ahec1 ,corresponding ,secretary with charge of the ,home ,department from #ahec to #ahfc1 and from that time till his death was a member of the ,executive ,committee4 ,we extract from an article in the ,advance1 by ,dr4 ,roy1 the following account of the funeral3 8,the funeral was held in the ,new ,england ,church of ,brooklyn1 ,e4 ,d41 where he had his membership4 ,in the large congregation there was a fine representation of colored people4 ,the ,executive ,committee and other officers of the ,american ,missionary ,association were present4 ,the pall-bearers were a squad of veterans of the old ,liberty ,guard4 ,the pastor1 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,hibbard1 presided4 ,a few words of affectionate sympathy with the brothers and sisters who had been bereaved of their father1 were spoken by ,rev4 ,j4 ,e4 ,roy1 whose father1 also at the age of eighty1 a few months before had been called away4 8,dr4 ,strieby spoke of the work of the departed in the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and especially with eloquent words depicted the tremendous moral courage1 the great cautiousness1 the womanly tenderness1 the transparent simplicity which were blended in his character4 ,strange that so sweet a man ever had the grit to take up the battle against slavery4 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,ray1 a colored minister1 who had known ,mr4 ,jocelyn1 and had been associated with him for forty years1 gave fitness to the occasion by his words of gratitude1 and by several telling reminiscences1--one of which was that1 in #ahci1 ,mr4 ,jocelyn came down from ,new ,haven to take up the gauntlet of debate upon the colonization question with ,mr4 ,robert ,finley4 ,the discussion was in a hall in ,nassau ,street1 and ,mr4 ,jocelyn's main reliance was the word of ,god4 8,rev4 ,mr4 ,lockwood1 a former pastor1 bore loving testimony4 ,dr4 ,edward ,beecher went back to an acquaintance of fifty years ago1 when a student in ,yale ,college1 under concern of soul1 he went to ,mr4 ,jocelyn4 ,he was such a spiritual1 faithful ,christian as a young man in passing that crisis would be apt to seek out4 ,dr4 ,b4 was associated with him in his ,sabbath-school and church work among the colored people1 and carried with him that same impulse when he went to ,illinois ,college1 and stood by ,elijah ,p4 ,lovejoy until they shot him down4 ,in closing1 ,dr4 ,beecher said that the words appropriate to the character of the departed were3 #8,in simplicity and godly sincerity1 not with fleshly wisdom1 but by the grace of ,god1 we have had our conversation in the world4'0 ,m4 ,e4 ,,strieby4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,random ,,suggestions4 ,will the ,exodus ,affect the ,work of the ,association in the ,south8 ,i answer without hesitation1 it will not4 ,to the present time the exodus movement has been confined very largely to the disturbed parishes1 or to certain exceptional cases where the conditions of labor have been oppressive4 ,in ,new ,orleans1 while conventions and open-air meetings have been held1 and the policy of emigration has been discussed1 but few of the ,freedmen have decided to leave the ,state and find a home in ,kansas4 ,there is a restless1 dissatisfied feeling among the masses of the negroes1 especially the poorer classes1 induced by the glowing appeals made to them2 but the exodus has not assumed1 and ,i believe will not assume1 large proportions4 ,the masses will stay on ,southern soil and abide in ,southern homes4 ,my opinion is based upon the supposition that their rights1 social1 educational and religious1 and their rights also as laborers1 will not be invaded or denied beyond what they are at present4 ,in ,new ,orleans #de per cent4 of the population is colored1 and in the ,state at large #ee per cent4 ,i do not believe that this ratio will be materially changed by the exodus4 ,and even if a few thousands of ,freedmen left the ,south in search of warmer hospitality1 an increased compensation for labor1 and a more equitable recognition of their rights as citizens1 it would not lessen the possibilities of good afforded to the ,association4 ,should a half million go away1 there would still be four and a half millions left to be instructed and helped in their race struggle for higher intelligence and a purer religious life4 ,press forward1 then1 the glorious work of education4 ,hasten the full equipment of the normal schools and colleges for the wider1 grander work before them4 ,let new churches be planted1 and the pure gospel of ,christ be preached all over the beautiful and fruitful ,south1 wherever the ,freedman has his home4 ,the work is not one of a generation1 but of a century4 ,student ,aid4 ,to secure1 at the earliest day1 one of the chief objects of the ,association--the thorough education of colored young men and women as teachers and ministers1 who shall be competent to lead the masses of their race to a higher civilization--special aid must be given to those whose minds and hearts give promise of usefulness4 ,a large number who propose to seek only an elementary education1 or those who reside in the city where a school of high grade is located1 do not require aid from abroad4 ,the wise policy of the instructors in our institutions is to search for young men and women of promise1 and encourage them to pursue a full course of study1 and to watch over them till the benefits they receive are made a valued possession not only to themselves but to their race4 ,what are the facts in the case8 ,the best material is often remote from the college1 and utterly lacking in pecuniary ability4 ,many of the brightest1 the most intellectual of the children of the ,freedmen1 who are intensely anxious for an education1 and have a praiseworthy ambition to be fitted for positions of responsibility and usefulness1 are denied the privileges of the college by reason of extreme poverty4 ,many others are able to meet a part of the cost of an education1 but without benevolent aid must stop short of a full course of study4 ,i am just now in receipt of a letter from a worthy and talented young man near ,new ,orleans4 ,i quote a sentence to show its import3 8,i have the same mind to work in the cause of ,christ and prepare to preach ,his word4 ,i think ,i have been called to engage in this work and cannot be satisfied unless ,i do4 ,dear brother1 ,i do now most solemnly appeal to you and the good brethren in the ,north to aid me to an education40 ,this is one instance of hundreds which could be cited4 ,another fact deserves earnest consideration4 ,we need to conserve and utilize for the general good the partial education which the graduates of our colleges have secured4 ,at the present time this is not done as it should be1 and as it might be1 if special student aid were available4 ,many graduates go forth from the college who are lost to view4 ,after so much patient labor has been bestowed upon them--and in some instances special pecuniary aid given--they should be encouraged in every way to devote themselves to the greatest good of their people4 ,take the last class in ,straight ,university as an illustration4 ,we graduated eight students1 all bright1 talented and promising1 and1 grandest of all1 ,christians4 ,all are poor--some of them extremely poor4 ,their education has cost them a hard1 patient struggle4 ,they desire to become teachers of the highest rank4 ,the young men are looking to the learned professions4 ,in order to attain what they desire1 and what we desire for them1 they should take a post-graduate course4 ,the young men1 if ,god calls them to the work1 should take a three years' course of theological instruction4 ,but left alone1 without outside aid1 they will be compelled to work for their daily bread1 and for them their school days will have forever passed4 ,is it not worth while to say to these young men3 8,come back to the ,university1 and the ,christian benevolence of the ,north will see you through one1 two or three years more of study1 and then we shall claim you for the college1 for the church1 and for the work of ,god4 ,henceforth you are not your own1 but must go wherever ,god shall call you1 and stand in the forefront of every great and good movement for the elevation of your race40 ,to-day1 if a worthy ,christian young man or woman appeals to us1 8,can you not aid me to keep on in my studies80 our answer is a sorrowful one1 8,there is no fund that can be appropriated to that purpose40 ,will not good men think of this and make a grand possibility of good a fact gloriously realized8 ,w4 ,s4 ,,alexander4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,strong ,,appeal4 ,we present below a forcible appeal for student aid4 ,such aid is essential1 and the question of obtaining it in sufficient amount to meet the demand lies at the bottom of the whole possibility of educating the colored youth of the ,south4 ,if scholarships and educational funds are important to the white students of the ,north1 how much more to the colored students at the ,south1 where employment is so poorly paid1 and the money so hard to be collected when earned6 ,this appeal is but a sample of the cry that comes from all our institutions--,atlanta1 ,talladega1 ,tougaloo1 ,new ,orleans1 and the rest4 ,an illustration may be seen in the foregoing article by ,rev4 ,w4 ,s4 ,alexander1 ,president of ,straight ,university4 ,but we must warn our patrons not to divert their contributions from our ordinary work to this special object1 for if this is done1 we might as well furnish this student help directly from our treasury4 ,then where would be the money to sustain the teachers8--and they must be sustained1 or the schools closed4 ,the only solution of the problem is for the friends of the ,freedmen to enlarge their contributions to meet both wants4 ,we most importunately urge our patrons not to starve the teacher in order to aid the scholar1 but help both4 ,what ,shall ,we ,do8 ,will a goodly number of the readers of the ,,american ,,missionary tell us8 ,the case can be best set forth by giving a single illustration4 ,on the ,saturday evening preceding the ,monday on which the new school year of ,fisk ,university was to begin1 a young man was brought to my room by one of our former students1 who introduced him as being from ,montgomery1 ,alabama4 ,i found on inquiry1 and from a letter which he brought from a prominent colored man of that city1 that he had determined to get an education1 and having but little money1 had made up his mind to walk from ,montgomery to ,nashville1 a distance of three hundred miles1 with the hope of finding some way by which he might be admitted as a student in ,fisk ,university4 ,fortunately1 a prominent citizen of ,montgomery was able to secure him a pass on the railroad1 one hundred miles1 to ,birmingham1 and a student of ,fisk ,university who happened to meet him at ,columbia1 ,tenn41 used the little spare money he had in his pocket to help him on his way twenty miles toward ,nashville4 ,what do the friends of education among the colored people of the ,south wish us to do with such cases8 ,the ,university has no means of its own with which to help such young people1 and this instance is but an illustration of very many similar cases which we are compelled to decide every year4 ,from the correspondence of teachers1 and through the cases known personally by the comparatively few of our old students who have already returned from their summer's work1 we could number up to-day1 which is only the fourth day after the opening of the school1 at least forty instances of young men and young women of known character and ability who are eager and anxious to come to ,fisk ,university to fit themselves for teaching and other ,christian work among their people1 who cannot come because they have not and cannot get sufficient money4 ,the number will be doubled by the time this article reaches our friends through the ,,american ,,missionary4 ,in many cases they can pay from five to seven dollars of the twelve dollars a month required for their board and tuition4 ,we find from actual experience that an average of fifty dollars will help at least one such struggling student to support for a year in ,fisk ,university4 ,the balance and the money necessary to purchase books they can generally provide for themselves4 ,we ask the readers of the ,,american ,,missionary what we shall do with these cases4 ,any one who will send us a thousand dollars will answer the question for at least twenty4 ,every fifty dollars will give the answer in the case of one4 ,our hearts ache when we are compelled to refuse1 for the want of money1 these eager applications4 ,every one who has an answer to give us can send it to ,h4 ,w4 ,hubbard1 ,assistant ,treasurer of the ,american ,missionary ,association at ,new ,york--and we know the answer will suffer no long delay in his hands--or to ,e4 ,p4 ,gilbert1 ,assistant ,treasurer of ,fisk ,university1 ,nashville1 ,tenn4 ,all students helped will in due time communicate by letter with those who thus befriend them4 ,will not every during the last twenty-five years4 ,this vast and newly-explored country is no doubt the choicest portion of the whole ,african continent4 ,the inhabitants1 with the exception of a few mixed tribes along its outer borders1 all belong to one great family4 ,a line starting from the ,cameroon ,mountains on the western coast1 second degree north latitude1 and drawn1 with some slight variations1 directly across the continent to the same degree of latitude on the east coast1 divides the negro race into two distinct families1 perhaps of nearly equal size4 ,the one1 occupying the country north of this line to the southern borders of the ,great ,desert1 is known as the ,nigritian stock1 from the fact that they are to be found mainly in the valley of the ,niger4 ,the other1 and the one to which our article mainly refers1 is known as the ,ethiopian or ,nilotic family1 from its supposed descent from the ancient ,ethiopians1 whose chief residence was the banks of the ,nile4 ,one general language1 with great divergence as to dialects1 prevails over this whole region of country4 ,there are not only verbal resemblances1 but there is a peculiar grammatical structure1 scarcely known to any other language1 that pervades and characterizes all the dialects of this one great family4 ,a very large number of words are common to the ,mpongwe dialect on the west coast1 and the ,swahili on the east1 as may be seen from a grammar of the ,mpongwe1 published by the missionaries at the ,gaboon years ago4 ,if the words used by three or four tribes along the coast of ,southern ,guinea could be fully collated1 they would be found to contain not less1 perhaps1 than four-fifths of all the words used over the whole of this vast region4 ,but apart from these verbal resemblances1 there are certain features of orthography that establish the relationship between these dialects quite as clearly4 ,to mention no others1 the use of m and n--as if they were preceded by a sort of half-vowel sound--before certain other consonants1 at the beginning of words1 is very peculiar4 ,m is constantly used before b1 p1 t1 and w1 as in the words mbolo1 mpolu1 mtesa1 and mwera4 ,so n is constantly used before k1 t1 y1 and gw1 as in the words nkala1 ntondo1 nyassa1 and ngwe4 ,the combination of ny occurs in the names of most of the great lakes1 as ,nyassa1 ,nyanza1 and ,tanganyika4 ,a still more striking feature of relationship between these dialects may be found in the combinations by which proper names are formed4 ,the names of a large proportion of the tribes encountered by ,stanley and ,cameron on their journeys across the continent commence with the letter u1 as ,uganda1 ,unyoro1 and ,ujiji1 c4 ,now1 by prefixing ma1 and dropping the initial u1 we have ,maganda1 a person or citizen of ,uganda2 ,manyoro1 a person or citizen of ,unyoro4 ,so by prefixing wa instead of ma1 we get ,waganda1 they1 or the people of ,uganda4 ,now1 in the ,mpongwe dialect1 ma is simply a contraction of oma1 person1 and wa or wao is the personal pronoun for they1 showing how these proper names are formed4 ,again1 many of the names of these tribes terminate in ana4 ,ana1 in the ,mpongwe dialect1 is an abbreviation of awana1 children or descendants4 ,if the names of ,bechuana and ,wangana could be analyzed1 they would be found to mean the children or descendants of ,bechu or ,wanga1 this being the way of giving names to any particular family that separates itself from the parent stock4 ,but the peculiar character of this language is more remarkable than its wide diffusion4 ,taking the ,mpongwe dialect as a specimen1 we have no hesitation in saying that it will be difficult to find any language1 ancient or modern1 that is more systematic or philosophical in its general arrangements1 more marked in the classification of its different parts of speech or their relationship to each other1 or in the extent of its inflections1 especially those of the verb4 ,the existence of such a language among an uncultivated people is simply a marvel4 ,as many as three hundred oblique forms can be derived from the root of every regular ,mpongwe verb1 each one of which will have a clear and distinct shade of meaning of its own1 and yet so regular and systematic in all its inflections1 that a practiced philologist could1 after a few hours' study1 trace up any of even its most remote forms to the original root4 ,it is not intended to convey the idea that all these forms are habitually used1 for that would indicate a much more extended vocabulary than could reasonably be expected among an uncultivated people4 ,but there is no form of the verb1 notwithstanding its extensive ramifications1 that would not be distinctly understood by an audience1 even if they had never heard it used before4 ,it will be seen1 therefore1 that the vocabulary may be expanded to an almost unlimited extent4 ,it is not only expansible1 but it has a wonderful capacity for conveying new ideas4 ,the missionaries laboring among these people1 after they had acquired a thorough knowledge of the structure of this wonderful language1 were surprised to find with how much ease they could use it to convey religious ideas4 ,in their native state the people had no knowledge of the ,christian religion1 and1 of course1 used no terms for saviour or salvation1 for redeemer or redemption1 etc4 ,they had1 however1 the terms sunga1 to save1 and danduna1 to redeem1 or pay a ransom4 ,now1 according to a well established law of grammar1 ozunge is a saviour1 and isungina is salvation2 similarly from danduna comes olandune1 the redeemer1 and ilanduna1 redemption3--so that they could at once get a tolerably correct idea of these terms1 and there was no need 7as there is in most unwritten languages7 to call in the aid of foreign words4 ,without multiplying illustrations of a similar character1 it will be seen that the language is not only flexible and expansive to a very remarkable degree1 but is suitable beyond almost any other known language to convey religious instruction to the minds of the people4 ,it has been preserved1 no doubt1 by a wise ,providence for this very purpose4 ,the providence of ,god towards this great family1 therefore1 seems to be very marked and significant4 ,they have been preserved for centuries in great numbers and vigorous manhood1 notwithstanding their perpetual intestine strifes and the cruel desolations that have been occasioned by the slave trade1 along both their eastern and western borders4 ,they are in possession of a country that is not only healthful and productive1 but whose navigable streams seem to have been traced out by the finger of ,divine ,providence for the twofold purpose of facilitating intercommunication among the people themselves1 and of furthering the rapid diffusion of the ,gospel wherever it has once gained a footing4 ,then their language1 with all its wonderful characteristics1 seems to have been kept by the ,divine hand as an easy channel through which the light and blessings of the ,gospel might1 in ,god's own good time1 reach their dark and benighted minds4 ,j4 ,,leighton ,,wilson1 in ,the ,catholic ,presbyterian4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,strange ,,but ,,true ,,story4 ,,by ,,mrs4 ,h4 ,g4 ,,guiness4 ,a wealthy farmer who cultivated some thousands of acres1 had1 by his benevolence1 endeared himself greatly to his large staff of laborers4 ,he had occasion to leave the country in which his property was situated1 for some years2 but1 before doing so1 he gave his people clearly to understand that he wished the whole of the cultivated land to be kept in hand1 and all the unclaimed marsh lands to be enclosed and drained1 and brought into cultivation--that even the hills were to be terraced1 and the poor mountain pastures manured--so that no single corner of the estate should remain neglected and barren4 ,ample resources were left for the execution of these works1 and there were sufficient hands to have accomplished the whole within the first few years of the proprietor's absence4 ,he was detained in the country to which he had been called very many years4 ,those whom he left children were men and women when he came back1 and so the number of his tenantry and laborers was vastly multiplied4 ,was the task he had given them to do accomplished8 ,alas6 no4 ,bog and moor and mountain waste were only wilder and more desolate than ever4 ,fine rich virgin soil1 by thousands of acres1 was bearing only briars and thistles4 ,meadow after meadow was utterly barren for want of culture2 nay1 by far the larger part of the farm seemed never to have been visited by his servants4 ,had they been idle8 ,some had1 but large numbers had been industrious enough4 ,they had expended a vast amount of labor1 and skilled labor1 too2 but they had bestowed it all on the park immediately around the house4 ,this had been cultivated to such a pitch of perfection that the workmen had scores of times quarreled with each other1 because the operations of one interfered with his neighbor4 ,and a vast amount of labor1 too1 had been lost in sowing the same patch--for instance1 with corn fifty times over in one season1 so that the seed never had time to germinate and grow and bear fruit2 in caring for the forest trees as if they had been tender saplings2 in manuring soils already too fat1 and watering pastures already too wet4 ,the farmer was positively astonished at the misplaced ingenuity with which labor and seed and manure1 skill and time and strength1 had been wasted for no result4 ,the very same amount of toil and capital expended according to his directions1 would have brought the whole demesne into culture1 and yielded a noble revenue4 ,but season after season had rolled away in sad succession1 leaving those unbounded areas of various but all reclaimable soil1 barren and useless2 and1 as to the park1 it would have been far more productive and perfect had it been relieved of the extraordinary and unaccountable amount of energy expended on it4 ,why did these laborers act so absurdly8 ,did they wish to labor in vain8 ,on the contrary1 they were forever craving for fruit1 coveting good crops1 longing for great results4 ,did they not wish to carry out the farmer's views about his property8 ,well1 they seemed to have that desire1 for they were always reading the directions he wrote1 and said continually to each other1 8,you know we have to bring the whole property into order20 but they did not do it4 ,some few tried1 and ploughed up a little plot here and there1 and sowed corn and other crops4 ,perhaps these failed1 and so the rest got discouraged4 ,oh no6 the yield was magnificent2 far richer in proportion than they got themselves4 ,they clearly perceived that1 but yet they failed to follow a good example4 ,nay1 when the labors of a few1 in some distant valley1 had resulted in a crop they were all unable to gather in by themselves1 the others would not even go and help them to bring home the sheaves4 ,they preferred watching for weeds among the roses in the overcrowded garden1 and counting the blades of grass in the park and the leaves on the trees4 ,then they were fools1 surely1 not wise men8--traitors1 not true servants to their lord8 ,oh6 ,i can't tell6 ,you must ask him that4 ,i only know that the ,master said1 8,go ye into all the ,indian ,territory4 ,all this was done before the present ,administration came into power1 and hence it has no responsibility for the wrong done4 ,secretary ,schurz says that 8no effort has been spared by the ,executive branch of the ,government to rectify all the wrongs that the ,poncas have suffered1 so far as these wrongs can be rectified40 ,he also says that 8a bill for their relief1 providing for payment for their lands in ,dakota1 and also providing for the payment for their new reservation1 with an appropriation of #eh1jjj to reimburse them for their losses1 has been sent to ,congress by the ,interior ,department40 ,we are glad to learn from so good an authority that the ,executive ,department of the ,government recognizes the wrong which has been done to these ,indians1 wisely pursue something of the same course8 ,if any persons can take up this line of talk without being accused of having been bulldozed by ,southern blandishment1 it may be those who were the early abolitionists1 and especially those who endeavor to prove their faith by their works in going down among the lowly and despised ex-slaves to try to raise them up by the appliances of education and of the ,gospel4 #a4 ,one such common possession is that of our ,english inheritance4 ,we are1 characteristically1 of the ,anglo-,saxon stock4 ,we speak the ,english language from ,south to ,north4 ,we representation in the ,south4 ,sixty years before the ,pilgrims landed1 they made1 on the ,carolina coast1 two settlements1 which were annihilated by the persecuting power of ,rome that followed them to the wilderness continent4 ,they tried again and made a lodgment where ,charleston now stands1 and to this day 8,the ,huguenot ,church0 abides in its integrity of language and of character4 ,from this same source that city has received a large infiltration of blood and of principle4 ,out in the ,state1 and at other places in the ,south1 the ,huguenots have given names to towns and tone and been many years in the ,south1 says that the ,holy ,day is more strictly observed in that part of the country than at the ,north4 ,the intellectual orthodoxy of the ,south is well known4 ,it may be because of the lack of activity in theological discussion1 but the fact is apparent to such a degree that a more ethical and practical preaching is what the ,christian people are hungering for thereaway4 #d4 ,we have a common sympathy in ,protestantism4 ,the early ,spanish and ,french occupation in ,louisiana and in ,baltimore has made those strong ,catholic centres4 ,but ,romanism is not so generally a prevailing power in the ,south as in the ,north4 ,the drift of foreign emigration has made this difference4 ,rome's chance at the ,south is now not with immigrants1 but with natives1 ,africo-,americans2 and she is bound to make the most of it4 ,but just here comes out our unity in ,protestant views4 ,southern ,christians are anxious lest the display and the mystery of the ,roman system should captivate these simple children of nature4 ,they are as solicitous as we that the same ,providence which delivered our land from the early domination of ,romish nationalities1 may save it from coming under the supremacy of that spiritual despotism4 ,when the ,catholic bishop at ,richmond opened his cathedral1 ,sunday nights1 to a free service in behalf of the colored people1 it made spellers and the easy parts of the ,bible1 may not come amiss4 ,it happened once that in a dimly-lighted school-house1 about nine o'clock at night1 filled with men and women of various hue1 from white through brown to black1 there was one class of nine young men spelling words of three syllables4 ,they were very earnest1 and in real old-fashioned way were going 8up and down0 in the class4 ,at the head stood ,joseph1 very black2 then three nearly as dark1 followed by four light ones1 with the very darkest of the whole class at the foot4 ,all went well till the upper light one missed and the word passed down2 ,joseph1 seeing it likely to pass from the light ones to the very dark face at the foot1 in excitement and joy burst forth with1 8,spell it1 ,dave1 and cut up here2 it's the color that tells40 ,dave spelt it1 and the color did tell4 ,one man who made his appearance in night-school about the middle of the winter1 ,i shall never forget4 ,his entrance was quite overpowering--a big man1 big cane1 big hat1 and a big shawl thrown over his shoulder1 ,arab style4 ,i happened to be at leisure1 so ,i went at once to ask him if he intended coming regularly to school4 ,saying that he did1 my next question was1 8,what's your name80 8,i'm ,lucy's husband1 over there40 ,as ,i didn't know ,lucy1 ,i was not much the wiser1 and had to repeat the question with the emphasis on the your4 or speckled turban2 old women wiping their spectacles1 vainly endeavoring to get 8more light0 on the subject1 while picking away at the letters in some old ,primer1 as if they were to be transferred bodily to the head4 ,aunt ,chloe ,fisher must have been seventy-five or eighty years old1 but still she was bright and original4 ,she came into school one afternoon very anxious to learn to read 8de way1 de troof1 and de life40 ,seeing some women in another part of the room reading1 she exclaimed1 8,jes hear dem niggers read6 ,if dis nig can't read1 too1 won't she fight 'em80 and then she vigorously applied her finger to the pages of the ,gospel of ,john which she had with her1 finding the words ,lord and ,god1 which were about all she knew4 ,she believed in both faith and works1 for she used to pray most earnestly that ,god would help her know the words1 and then get up in the middle of the night and light a pine knot to see if she had a word right4 ,old ,aunt ,chloe was always happy4 ,i never saw her otherwise but once1 and then she was greatly troubled for fear she should lose her place in the grave-yard4 ,one special place she had chosen1 and young people were dying so fast she was afraid she should not die soon enough to lie there4 ,she would get happy over her wash-tub or anywhere else1 and her hands and her feet would keep time with some negro hymn in a most amusing manner4 ,one old ,aunty was reading the fifth chapter of ,matthew1 when she came to a passage1 which she read thus2 8,neither--do--men--light--a--half-bushe l--and--put--it--under--a--candle-stick4 0 ,on being stopped and told to look again1 pointing with her finger all along the lines of the page1 with a look of half despair she said1 8,bress you1 honey1 ,i can't find either candle or half-bushel now40 ,those simple words were quite a sermon for me1 and ,i've thought of them many a time since4 ,are not we1 as ,christians1 in danger of losing our candles8 ,our good ,aunty's candle was soon found for her2 but will ours1 once lost1 be as easily recovered8 ,in those days1 even in the day-schools1 there were many difficulties that could hardly be encountered now4 ,i remember hearing one teacher say that it was almost impossible to get the ages of her scholars4 ,they would say1 8,my age is up country20 or 8,ole missis has my age in the ,bible1 and she's gone away40 ,the trick of giving one name to one teacher and another to the next was practiced4 ,on giving a second name once1 one little fellow was brought up with1 8,why1 ,i thought your name was ,george ,johnson80 8,i done got tired of that name10 was his cool reply4 ,perhaps the most interesting prayer-meeting that ,i ever attended among the ,freedmen was in ,alabama1 where the ,ku ,klux outrages lasted so much longer than in other places1 and where the missionaries looked to their guns and their rifles before retiring4 ,i reached there just the evening of the weekly prayer-meeting at the school-house4 ',twas a stormy night1 but with waterproofs and umbrellas we ventured4 ,wholly unused to bullets1 ,i must confess there was a little trembling under one waterproof1 as we wended our way along the little path through the woods1 and across the one plank bridge over the ,branch2 but once within the building all fear vanished4 ,the room was filled with the finest looking colored people ,i had ever seen4 ,they had1 many of them1 been house servants in the best families in this aristocratic place4 ,the pastor opened the meeting1 and they carried it on with a liveliness that was truly refreshing4 ,two or three usually rose at once1 with words right on their lips4 ,this church had only been organized a little over a year1 and then numbered about eighty4 ,there had been much to dishearten all along4 ,they had no church building1 and had been striving hard to build2 but no sooner would they begin to see little light through the clouds than the white people1 fearing that the men with dark skins might acquire too great a hold on this world's goods1 would remove work from the most prosperous1 and thus the clouds would gather again4 ,referring to this method of keeping down1 one of the members once said1 8,no 'count niggers can rub along here well enough1 but smart niggers had better look out for other quarters40 ,even at that time the danger of their being obliged to disband from outside violence was hardly over1 and as they told of their love for their church1 one could hardly help thinking of the stories of the early ,christians1 when persecutions only increased their zeal4 ,there was an undertone of sadness through the remarks of several1 for they felt peculiarly uncertain as to what a day might bring forth4 ,but one suddenly rose and changed the key4 8,i was sad10 he said1 8when ,i first came in here1 but your words of sadness have made me glad1 for they have shown me how much we all love our church1 and such love1 with the love of ,god for us1 which is even much greater1 will carry us through fiery trials4 ,i never felt as strong as ,i feel to-night4 ',tis true1 ,i don't know what may come upon us1 but ,i do feel that the ,lord will help us through40 ,then he told what he hoped for the future1 in such cheerful words1 that as he sat down1 they burst forth almost with one voice in a song of praise1 and then one after another kneeled down1 and in the most simple words of faith asked their ,father to help ,his children in this their day of trouble1 and ,i do not think there was one present who had the slightest doubt of ,his doing so4 ,even before the ,kansas fever1 there were ,states in the ,north that were synonyms for all good things to the colored people4 ,i remember a ,thanksgiving ,day1 when a minister was addressing one of the schools1 and telling the children what they had to be thankful for1 that he burst forth with the question1 8,is there any other country so blessed as this80 8,yes1 sir10 said a little urchin before him4 8,why1 what one80 8,massachusetts10 was the reply4 ,i once heard a colored minister pray heartily for the teachers in this wise1 8,may ,god throw around this institution that ,he ever cares for ,his own cause1 we may believe that ,he calls the loved one to a higher usefulness4 ,such were some of the thoughts that came to our hearts when1 on a beautiful ,june morning during the summer vacation1 we read the words1 8,e4 ,j4 ,park died yesterday afternoon10 followed by an account of the triumphant death of a student of ,fisk ,university1 who had gone to ,texas to teach school4 ,eugene ,park came to ,fisk ,university several years ago1 a pleasant1 careless boy1 who had never bestowed a thought upon his eternal interests4 ,for a long time he was but little moved2 both the warnings and the entreaties of the ,gospel seemed to fall unheeded upon his ear1 and we often felt that he became only more careless and indifferent4 ,at last1 however1 the ,spirit strove with him1 and he began to ask1 8,what must ,i do to be saved80 though at first there was not in him that fixed purpose which would lead him to arise and go to his ,father4 ,and so he halted for months1 wavering and undecided1 until a mighty conviction seized him that he must find ,god1 and that speedily4 ,sin1 in all its enormity1 was revealed to him1 and he seemed indeed to realize that he was lost1 unless the ,saviour should interpose and deliver him4 ,he then gave himself entirely to seeking ,god4 ,he could not study1 and there were many long hours in which he could neither eat nor sleep1 so powerfully was he wrought upon4 ,one morning in ,chapel1 at devotional exercises1 while in this intense state of mind1 the reading of the ,scriptures so affected him that he sobbed aloud4 ,hoping to calm him1 and at the same time point him to ,christ1 the hymn was sung1 8,oh1 the blood1 the precious blood60 but he was so overcome that his friends were obliged to take him away1 and a few of us gathered and prayed with him4 ,still the light from the ,sun of ,righteousness did not break in2 the precious blood was not applied to his soul until the next day1 when ,jesus ,himself drew near1 and the ,lord of ,glory revealed ,himself as the ,one altogether lovely1 and the ,chief among ten thousand4 ,his soul seemed in a rapture of joy for days4 ,he came to the school with his ,bible always in his hand1 as though he could not be parted from it even for a moment4 ,then followed years of ripening in the ,christian life1 with frequent seasons of such blessing that he could not speak of ,christ without tears4 ,he early gave himself to the ministry1 feeling that to preach the everlasting ,gospel would be his highest joy1 and was pursuing his studies with this in view4 ,he was not1 however1 without temptations to a worldly life1 though we are assured that the dear ,saviour kept ,his own1 even unto the end4 ,his death was a beautiful illustration of the triumph of the ,gospel of ,christ4 ,far from friends and home1 yet he was not alone1 for that ,friend that sticketh closer than a brother was near4 ,he had been ill for several days1 and one morning he told those about him that he should go home at three afternoon1 and precisely at the hour named the summons came4 ,he had sent messages to his mother and friends4 8,tell them10 he said1 8that ,jesus is with me and saves me4 ,oh1 how sweet it is to die in the arms of ,jesus40 ,he then sung1 8,washed in the blood of the ,lamb10 8,safe in the arms of ,jesus10 and 8,sweeping through the gates to the new ,jerusalem40 ,and ,if ,i go and tell these things to my mother she will give him a good whipping4' 8,so his elder brother agreed to tell his mother in the morning2 and when the morning came he brought the whole affair before her4 ,she was exceedingly grieved when she heard it1 and she went and told some of her son's uncles4 ,then ,lee ,foun's uncles said to her3 #8,never mind that now2 your son now come back is like a stranger2 you need not to say any thing to him now2 but wait for two days1 until the first day of ,june is come2 then you may call him up and offer some tea1 and burn the incense in the morning1 and see if he do it or not4' ,this custom was known to ,lee ,foun1 for our ,chinese generally keep it twice each month--the first day of the month and the fifteenth4 ,it is considered a very important custom1 as much so as to serve their parents in their lifetime4 ,it is like the ,jews keeping the ,passover every year1 or as we keep the ,supper of the ,lord4 8,so his mother said nothing to him till the first day of ,june2 then she tried to wake him up to burn the incense and offer the tea to his great-grandfather2 but ,lee ,foun did not get up as early that morning as usual2 and when 8,not only he did so1 but ,chan ,wen1 ,lee ,sam1 and also many of our brethren1 act in accordance with ,christianity when they go back to ,china4 ,i believe you have no doubt of that2 for if we are true ,christians here in ,california1 we will be true ,christians in ,china and elsewhere4 ,we will stand up for ,jesus and suffer for ,him1 and take up ,his cross in public4 8,dear friends1 we entreat that you will mention our names to the ,lord when you pray1 that we may have a faithful heart in our ,lord ,jesus2 that we may be strong in ,him2 and ask ,him to open the great door to us1 that the nation of heathen ,chinese soon may become a ,christian nation1 and they may understand the word of ,god and know ,christ is the ,creator and ,saviour of the world1 and all the creatures should be bowed down before ,him40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,country ,,school-,,houses4 ,,to ,,the ,,children3 ,i know you have heard much about the colored people1 but did you ever hear about their country school-houses8 ,let me tell you of two in ,alabama4 ,sunday-schools as well as day-schools are held in these same buildings4 ,one ,sunday1 a minister who was going twelve miles out into the country to visit one of these schools1 invited me to go with him4 ,after inquiring many times where the school was1 and going half a mile out of our way1 we at last spied1 at the right of the road1 some saddled mules hitched to trees4 ,we thought that might be the place1 and sure enough there1 right in the woods1 was a nice new school-house4 ,after fastening our horse to a sweet-gum tree1 we entered the little unpainted building4 ,the superintendent gave us seats at the head of the school--not armchairs1 but simply a board two feet from the floor1 answering for a bench4 ,as soon as we were seated ,i began to look about me to see what kind of a place ,i was in1 while the minister addressed the school4 ,the house was built of pine logs1 placed an inch apart1 consequently there were great cracks on all sides of the room1 which in summer must have been pleasant1 as they let in air1 but in winter1 think how cold they would be4 ,the house was full of old men1 women and children1 sitting on rude benches4 ,as ,i looked through the crack near me1 ,i saw outside a row of men seated on a log1 who left their places when they heard a stranger's voice inside and crowded into the house4 ,i saw them put their hats up on a beam over their heads4 ,those who couldn't find room inside looked through the cracks4 ,there was no window1 only a square hole cut over the door to let in light4 ,seeing the many cracks in the roof1 we asked1 when we came out1 if it never rained in upon them4 8,not much10 was the answer4 ,you see these people don't mind a bit of a sprinkle now and then4 ,after the minister had finished telling them how he had been in the very same land where ,jesus had lived1 the school sung1 8,we're going home to-morrow40 ,i wish you could have heard those children4 ,they sang at the top of their voices1 their white teeth showing more than ever in contrast with their black skin4 ,after the superintendent gave out the papers which we had brought1 the exercises closed1 and ,i was glad to be relieved of the sixty pairs of eyes which had been upon me4 ,another time ,i went with some teachers to a ,mission ,sunday-school4 ,this was in a most lovely place1 right in the thick woods1 far away from any houses or sounds of any kind1 except the songs of the birds4 ,we found we were early that day1 for neither the teacher nor scholars had come4 ,we went inside the school-house and waited4 ,perhaps you ask how we got in4 ,that was an easy thing to do1 for there was no locked door to keep us out1 and no door of any kind1 only an opening in one side of the house4 ,this was an old building1 built in the same way as the first one ,i visited4 ,in some places the logs were a foot apart4 ,here the benches were made of round logs split in two1 the flat part being the top1 and in each end of the rounded part were two legs4 ,and such queer looking seats as they were6 ,only one or two of them had backs4 ,before long the teacher and a few scholars came4 ,the school was small that day1 as there was a 8big baptizing10 as they call it1 not far away1 which always attracts crowds of colored people4 ,after the scholars had left1 and as we were preparing to go1 a terrible thunder shower came up which detained us there4 ,the rain came in1 drip1 drip1 at every crack1 till after a while there was only one dry corner in the house4 ,the teacher told us that when showers came in school time1 the scholars had to sit on their books to keep them dry4 ,the shower continued for some time1 and being very tired1 after a sixteen-mile drive over new-cut roads through woods1 we put on our water-proofs and lay down on the damp benches2 but finding the drops were falling into our faces1 we were obliged to put up umbrellas4 ,this was resting under difficulties4 ,there1 in that open building1 far away from any one1 with the rain coming in and standing in pools on the floor1 we fully realized what these poor country people have to go through to learn their ,a1 ,b1 ,c2 and those who continue their schools in the winter must suffer greatly from the cold1 as they only have a fire-place in one end of the room4 ,one teacher told us that his fire-place was so poor1 that in winter he built a fire out of doors1 while the children gathered around it sitting on stumps and logs4 ,there are not only these two schools ,i have spoken of1 but many such scattered all over the ,southern ,states4 ,now1 since ,i have been writing this1 ,i have thought what a nice plan it would be for you boys and girls to save some of your pennies1 and perhaps before long one of you would have enough to buy a small1 plain black-board1 and another enough to buy a box of crayons1 or a pretty motto for one of these old bare school-rooms4 ,if you couldn't send the things1 you could send the money for them2 and how delighted any teacher would be with a few such comforts6 ,what do you think of my plan8--,l4 ,p4 ,h4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts
