99 99 99 ,there is good sound sense in the very practical contribution on ,children's ,influence in ,missions1 or rather on interesting children in the work of ,missions1 on the ,children's page4 ,the heart which is interested intelligently in such work in its youth will never be likely to grow too busy or too old to follow the progress of the years1 and the hand which has learned early to drop its pennies into the ,lord's treasury will hardly be found clenched upon its dollars in riper years4 99 99 99 99 99 ,next month brings us around to another ,annual ,meeting4 ,our financial year ends with the last day of this month 7,september74 ,our books will be closed then for the year1 and our balance will be struck4 ,this is our reminder to all1 either churches or individuals1 who have intended to contribute to our work during the current year4 ,let your gifts be sent in speedily and as liberally as the ,lord may have prospered you4 ,every cent received during the next thirty days helps this year's showing4 ,do not let us go back of the standard maintained during the last three years6 ,our ambition is to report expenses all met and debt all gone4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the report that the yellow fever has returned to ,memphis has long before this reached the ears of our friends4 ,we hope that the evil will not be so great as it was last year1 and yet its immediate effect upon our work has been more suddenly felt than then4 ,the people flee more eagerly from a scourge the severity of which they hold in horror enhanced by the recent memory of its infliction4 ,the church at ,memphis is scattered2 pastor and people have left it2 a faithful janitor is caring for its and the school property4 ,the church at ,chattanooga1 too1 has been largely deserted1 and its attendants have fled to the mountains4 ,of course this is but a temporary interruption4 ,the three or four hundred dollars which was sent to us last year for the relief of the colored sufferers accomplished an amount of physical relief1 and indirectly of spiritual good1 almost beyond belief4 ,we shall be glad to superintend the disbursement of any like moneys which may be sent to relieve the poorest of the poor in this their special distress4 99 99 99 99 99 8,oh1 how great is ,thy goodness1 which ,thou hast laid up for them that fear ,thee2 which ,thou hast wrought for them that trust in ,thee1 before the sons of men60 ,as a father lays up for his children against a future need1 so the psalmist felt that the ,heavenly ,parent had done for those that fear ,him2 so1 in sight of the sons of men had ,he wrought such goodness for them4 ,it is a great thing to realize the daily dispensing of such divine favor1 but a greater to learn that ,infinite ,love has gone before to treasure up the riches of goodness4 ,it was a marvel of blessing that ,god wrought before the sons of men in all the world for the ,american children of bondage in their emancipation4 ,but more than this3 ,he had laid up beforehand treasures of ,christian anti-slavery sentiment and charity1 to be disbursed among them in the lines of educational and ,christianizing processes1 and1 with divine forethought4 ,he had prepared a system for the administration of this relief4 ,distinguished among other provisions of this kind were the rise and the preparatory training in principle and method of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,we know not which the more to admire1 the wisdom or the goodness of such fore-ordaining4 ,it is the privilege of its constituency to be the almoners of such bounty4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,literature ,,of ,,our ,,southern ,,work4 ,it makes no pretension4 ,it has been a growth from nothing4 ,and yet it is worthy of mention4 ,the ,southern ,workman1 the organ of ,hampton ,institute1 is a monthly1 well filled with matter historical1 scientific and newsy1 and well adapted to interest the ,freedmen and their friends1 as also the civilized ,indians and their friends4 ,the ,hampton ,health ,tracts1 in a series of a half dozen1 treat of the great essentials of health and of physiology4 ,it was a happy hit to give the late children of bondage these first lessons in civilization4 ,this list of tractates has also not a little of instruction for many people who pass among the enlightened class4 ,the ,fisk ,expositor is an occasional issue that gathers up the history and progress of that ,university1 which the ,jubilee ,singers have done so much to endow and to make famous4 ,the ,southern ,sentinel is a monthly1 published at ,talladega ,college1 and designed1 as is the ,southern ,workman1 to interest the colored people in all matters pertaining to education1 agriculture and mechanic arts4 ,on both1 the work of type-setting and printing is all done by the colored students1 who have learned the process while in school1 and who make this their means of support1 besides the acquiring of a trade that will secure them a respectable livelihood4 ,the young women make capital compositors4 ,in both of these offices not a little of job work is also done4 ,the mechanical work upon the ,american ,missionary was for a time done by the office at ,hampton4 ,the ,straight ,university at ,new ,orleans has also its occasional medium of communication with its constituency4 ,eight chartered institutions issue their annual catalogues1 which compare favorably with the current literature of the kind4 ,it seems not a little strange1 in these annual reports of schools among our fellow-citizens1 the late slaves1 to come across not only the lists of the ,faculties and the long roll of students1 but also the several departments1 normal1 scientific1 classical1 medical1 legal and theological4 ,then of the six ,general ,associations for our ,southern churches1 four have issued their annual 8,minutes40 ,those of the original one1 the ,central ,south1 furnish quite a compendium of our church work4 ,those of ,alabama are rich in records of discussions upon vital themes and of missionary activities4 ,those of ,louisiana glow with revival reminiscences4 ,the first of ,georgia makes a dignified document that gives promise of not a little of church activity4 ,texas and ,north ,carolina will soon come on to the dignity of printing the ,minutes of their ,associations4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,tenth ,,commandment4 ,during the last few days1 how to avoid breaking the tenth commandment has been a practical question for me4 ,it has been my privilege to visit the ,college and ,agricultural ,school at ,amherst1 and their sister institutions at ,northampton and ,south ,hadley1 if they can be called institutions when the students are absent4 ,as ,i strolled about the ,amherst ,college grounds and buildings1 and noticed its concrete walls and shaven lawns1 with their trimmed edges that said to the grass1 8,thus far and no farther20 and looked upon the ,gymnasium1 ,walker ,hall1 and ,college ,chapel1 of solid granite and beautiful sandstone1 with their numerous gables1 towers and turrets2 and walked about the ,museum building1 crowded with many rare and costly specimens1 representing thousands upon thousands of dollars and years upon years of skilled and patient labor2 and then strolled about the pleasant village1 and saw the beauty and elegance and comfort of the professors' residences3 then1 as ,i went into the field1 and saw in the centre of a farm of #ejj acres of level1 fertile land1 the ,agricultural ,college buildings of brick and stone1 erected for service1 but not lacking in adornment2 the extensive and beautiful conservatory1 the fine barn and cattle1 and various 8new and improved0 agricultural implements2 then1 as1 after a ride of seven miles through the valley of the ,connecticut1 justly famed for its beauty1 where deacons formerly raised profitable crops of tobacco while they were trying to solve the questions of ethics involved in this industry1 ,i saw upon the 8hill0 in ,northampton1 ,smith ,college1 with its lovely grounds1 its ,gothic buildings of somewhat elaborate architecture1 including a house for the president and cottages for the young ladies1 its varnished floors1 its fine furniture1 and its art galleries1 containing already a goodly collection from the pencil of the painter and the chisel of the sculptor1 upon all of whose equipments seemed to be written1 8,nothing mean or cheap can enter here20 then1 as1 after having flanked ,mount ,holyoke and got in his rear1 ,i came upon the school of ,mary ,lyon1 where formerly were educated all the sisters and 8cousins0 of the ,amherst students1 and1 beginning at the kitchen1 where are two stoves expressly devoted to the cooking of griddle-cakes1 a broiler for beefsteaks1 a marble slab for a 8bread board10 and a stone slab for warming plates1 and then passed on through the capacious dining-room and the carpeted chapel to the fire-proof library building filled with books1 and then to the new ,williston cabinet and art gallery1 where our guide1 an old pupil of ,mary ,lyon1 pointed out a picture which she said1 apparently with 8bated breath10 cost #a1jjj4 ,as ,i saw all these evidences of growth and prosperity and tokens of the liberality of good men and women1 there kept ringing in my ears a sentence from the catalogue of our poor ,atlanta ,university3 8,it is hoped that the time is not far distant when funds will flow into the treasury of the ,institution as freely as they do into those of colleges in other parts of the country40 ,when one sees how ,new ,england is packed with seminaries1 colleges1 academies and high schools1 he can hardly help believing that the ,lord is willing that the colored people of the ,state of ,georgia shall have one institution for thoroughly fitting teachers for the common schools of their race1 and at least giving those who can and wish to obtain a college education the opportunity of doing this4 ,and may we not have faith to believe that the example of ,mrs4 ,stone1 in giving one-sixth of the money to be distributed by her among the schools of the country to those in the ,south for the education of the colored race1 will be followed by others1 and that this provision for the more needy will but increase the devising of liberal things for these institutions of the ,north8 ,t4 ,n4 ,c4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,winding ,,up ,a ,,horse4 ,nineteen years ago ,i bought in ,madras a peculiar kind of horse4 ,he had to be wound up to make him go4 ,it was not a machine1 but a veritable live horse4 ,when breaking him to go in the carriage he had been injured4 ,an accident occurred in starting him the first time and he was thrown and hurt and frightened4 ,it made him timid2 afraid to start4 ,after he had once started he would never balk1 until taken out of the carriage4 ,he would start and stop and go on as many times as you pleased1 but it was very difficult to get him started at first each time he was harnessed to the carriage4 ,he was all right under the saddle1 an excellent riding horse1 and would carry me long distances in my district work1 so that ,i did not wish to dispose of him2 but ,i could not afford to keep two1 whatever ,i had must go in carriage as well as ride1 and ,i determined that ,i would conquer4 ,how ,i have worked over that horse6 ,at first it sometimes took me an hour to get him started from my door4 ,at last1 after trying everything ,i had ever heard of1 ,i hit upon an expedient that worked4 ,i took a strong bamboo stick two feet long and over an inch thick4 ,a stout cord loop was passed through a hole two inches from its end4 ,this loop we would slip over his left ear down to the roots and turn the stick round and round and twist it up4 ,it is said that a horse can retain but one idea at a time in its small brain4 ,soon the twisting would begin to hurt4 ,his attention would be abstracted to the pain in his ear4 ,he would forget all about a carriage being hitched to him1 bend down his head and walk off as quiet as a lamb4 ,when he had gone a rod the horse boy would begin to untwist1 soon off would come the cord1 and the horse would be all right for the day4 ,the remedy never failed4 ,after having it on two or three times he objected to the operation1 and would spring about and rear and twitch and back2 anything but start ahead1 to keep it from being applied4 ,we would have1 two of us1 to begin to pat and rub about his neck and head4 ,he would not know which had the key4 ,all at once it would be on his ear and winding up4 ,the moment it began to tighten he would be quiet1 stand and bear it as long as he could1 and then off he would go4 ,it never took thirty seconds to get him off with the key4 ,it would take an hour without4 ,after a little he ceased objecting to have it put on4 ,he seemed to say to himself1 8,i have got to give in and may as well do it at once10 but he would not start without the key4 ,in a few months he got so that1 as soon as we got into the carriage1 he would bend down his head to have the key put on1 and one or two turns of the key would be enough4 ,then the key became unnecessary4 ,he would bend down his head1 tipping his left ear to the horse boy1 who would take it in his hand and twist it1 and off he would go4 ,my native neighbors said1 8,that horse must be wound up or he cannot run40 ,and it did seem to be so4 ,when he got so that the 8winding up0 was nothing but a form1 ,i tried to break him of that1 but could not succeed4 ,i would pat him and talk to him and give him a little salt or sugar or bread1 and then step quietly into the carriage and tell him to go4 8,no40 ,coax him4 8,no40 ,whip him4 8,no40 ,legs braced1 every muscle tense for resistance4 ,a genuine balk4 ,stop and keep quiet for an instant and he would hold down his head1 bend over his ear and look around for the horse boy appealingly1 saying very earnestly by his actions1 8,do please wind me up4 ,i can't go without1 but ,i'll go gladly if you will40 ,the moment his ear was touched and one twist given1 off he would go as happy and contented as ever horse could be4 ,many hearty laughs have we and our friends had over the winding up of that horse4 ,if ,i were out on a tour for a month or two and he were not hitched to the carriage1 or if he stood in the stable with no work for a week or two during the monsoon1 a real winding up had to take place the first time he was put in4 ,we kept him six years4 ,the last week ,i owned him ,i had to wind him up4 ,i sold the patent to the man that bought the horse1 and learned from him that he had to use it as long as the horse lived4 ,i was thinking about that horse the other night when it was too hot to sleep1 and ,i suddenly burst into a laugh as ,i said to myself1 8,i have again and again1 in the membership of our churches at home1 seen that horse that had to be wound up1 in all matters of benevolence40 ,i had often thought of that horse as ,i went through our churches at home1 and imagined that ,i recognized him1 but the whole thing came upon me with such peculiar force the other night that ,i must write out my thoughts4 ,there are some ,christians 7yes1 ,i believe they are ,christians7 who have to be wound up by some external pressure before they will start off in any work of benevolence4 ,others will engage in some kinds of benevolence spontaneously1 but will not touch other benevolent efforts unless specially wound up4 ,free under the saddle1 but balky in carriage4 ,i knew of one good member of our church who would never give a cent to our ,domestic ,missionary ,board unless he happened to hear of some missionary in the ,west who was actually without the necessaries of life1 and then he would send in liberally4 ,it took that to wind him up4 ,another would never give to the ,board for educating young men for the ministry unless he happened to become acquainted with some candidate who was being aided4 ,then his gifts would come in for helping that man4 ,another would never give to the ,bible ,society unless he chanced to hear of some particular town out ,west where but two ,bibles could be found in a population of five hundred1 although he knew perfectly well that there were hundreds of such communities among whom the ,american ,bible ,society was daily endeavoring to introduce the ,divine ,word4 ,he must be wound up by a special case4 ,but it was especially of my visits through the churches in connection with our foreign missionary work that ,i was thinking when ,i said that ,i had so often recognized my horse that had to be wound up1 in all the different stages of his training4 ,thank ,god1 ,i found hosts of noble-hearted men and women all through the ,church that needed no winding up2 whose conversion and consecration had extended down to their pockets2 who were always at the forefront in every good work2 who required no spasmodic appeals4 ,they gave from a deep set principle and an intelligent love for ,christ and ,his cause2 some even pinching themselves in the necessaries of life1 as ,i know1 to be able to give4 ,it is on such that the security and continuance of our missions depend4 ,we know that we can rely on them4 ,they never fail us4 ,but there are others that have to be 8wound up10 willing or unwillingly1 before they will do anything in the missionary work4 ,some are very willing to be wound up4 8,dominie10 said a good elder who had just introduced himself to me one day1 8,i have come in on behalf of our church at ---- to see if you would not come out and give us a missionary talk4 ,we ought to have sent in a collection to the ,foreign ,board months ago1 but we neglected it1 and now we have been talking it over and have made up our minds to do something handsome if you will come out there and give us a talk40 8,well10 said ,i1 8,i shall be very glad to come and tell you something of our work just as soon as ,i can edge a day in between other engagements4 ,but if you have made up your minds to do something handsome for the ,board1 why not do it at once and relieve their present pressing need1 and ,i will come as soon as ,i can and give you the talk all the same40 8,o1 no10 said he4 8,we can't do that4 ,we have made up our minds that we must give liberally1 but we can start it easier if you come there and give us the talk first4 ,you need not fear4 ,we will give a good sum4 ,that is settled1 and it is mostly pledged4 ,but you must come and talk to us first40 ,i smiled and said to myself1 8,there is my horse in its third stage of training4 ,that church is bending down its ear and entreating me to twist it1 for it has made up its mind to go1 only it requires to be wound up first40 8,dominie10 said one of our earnest ministers to me one ,wednesday1 8we raised #a1jjj for the ,board last ,sunday morning4 ,it is more than usual1 and we are all happy over it4 ,now we want you to come over the first ,sunday of next month and give us a missionary address40 8,good10 said ,i1 8that church has got one stage further than my horse ever did in his training1 for they start and do the work first and bend down the ear to be twisted afterwards40 ,did it not give me an earnest joy to go and tell that church what the ,lord's war in ,india was1 and how much they had helped it8 ,a ,sunday-school superintendent came to me one day with smiling countenance1 saying1 8,our ,sunday-school has raised #age during the past year for missions1 and we have determined to give it to the work in ,india4 ,the year closed three months ago1 and it is all in the hands of the treasurer1 but we want you to come and give us a speech1 and then it will be formally voted and sent at once to the ,board4 ,we have been waiting all this time because they told us at the rooms that you were engaged up till now4 ,when can you come8 ,the money is lying idle and we are waiting1 and we know the ,board needs the funds4 ,so come as soon as you can40 8,ah10 said ,i1 8everything is ready1 and the family are in the carriage1 but they have to sit there half an hour because the horse boy is busy elsewhere1 and the horse is holding down his ear all this time waiting for that particular horse boy to come and twist it40 ,i was both pained and irresistibly amused by an incident that occurred not two hundred miles from ,new ,york1 when the horse was in the first stage of training1 and stoutly resisted allowing its ear to be touched4 ,the missionary was announced to speak in the church on a given ,sunday1 when the annual collection would be taken up4 ,a good member of the church--the pastor says a sincere ,christian--was very much put out about it2 had heard enough of these old missionaries1 and was not going to hear any more2 did not believe in foreign missions--we had heathen enough at home4 ,the appointed ,sunday came4 ,mr4 ,a4 and his family stayed away from church because they would not countenance the missionary address4 ,they1 therefore1 missed the announcement which the pastor made1 viz41 that a telegram had been received that it was impossible for the missionary to be there4 ,he would come next ,sunday1 and the annual collection would be deferred until then4 ,the following ,sunday ,mr4 ,a4 and family all filed into their pew1 serene and happy in the thought that they had avoided the old missionary4 ,as the organ was playing the voluntary1 the pastor entered the pulpit from the vestry and a stranger with him4 ,the pastor took the opening exercises and the second hymn was sung1 when the pastor rose and said that ,mr4----1 the missionary1 as announced last ,sunday1 would now address them4 ,mr4 ,a4 was thunderstruck4 ,he did not like to go out in the middle of a service1 and so determined to sit it through4 ,the missionary told his simple tale4 ,the plates came in4 ,the collection was unprecedentedly large4 ,mr4 ,a4's plethoric pocket-book had disgorged itself upon the plates1 and no heartier worker for foreign missions is now found in that church4 ,mr4 ,a4 had tried his best to keep his ear from being twisted4 ,now it needs no twisting4 ,he has learned to go and loves to go4 ,there was a church in our fold at home whose pastor was determined that it should not be wound up for foreign missions4 ,he had succeeded1 as he himself told me1 in keeping all missionaries and secretaries and agents out of his pulpit during all the years of his pastorate4 ,when the day came for collections for any of our ,boards the fact was stated1 the plates were passed1 and those gave who wished4 ,the collection1 as a matter of course1 under such a chill1 was a minimum4 ,it required some of the very best and most wary and skillful manuvring to get hold of the ear of that church2 but it was obtained and twisted1 and off it started on the trot in the missionary work1 and since then it has annually held down its ear and begged to have it twisted1 as it wanted to go more4 ,scores of incidents which occurred in my own experiences among the churches in ,america1 and which recalled my skimmed along nicely on the ,big ,bargroo ,river1 passing many neatly built and arranged villages4 ,we stopped at some to ask for children1 but the chiefs informed us1 generally1 that they would have to hold consultations with the people on the matter4 ,on every side signs of heathenism exhibited themselves4 ,little mounds1 built by certain insects of the country1 neatly covered by the natives1 are bowed down to and worshipped4 ,small pots or bottles are placed before their doors to keep away evil spirits4 ,,coconanny ,,and ,,dodo4 ,late in the evening we arrived at ,coconanny1 the extreme military post of the ,english4 ,this is kept here to suppress the slave-trade1 though much of it is carried on1 ,i am informed1 clandestinely4 ,it is a beautiful place1 elevated and healthy2 vegetation1 too1 grows luxuriantly4 ,the trader1 ,mr4 ,hayes1 with whom we put up for the night1 has built1 at his own expense1 a small chapel1 in which services are conducted mornings and ,sundays4 ,mr4 ,hayes is a friend of the ,mission and our work1 and desires very much to have us come and begin missionary work in behalf of those among whom his lot is cast4 ,the villages round about are abundant1 and ,i think a good work could be done in this community4 ,the people are willing to have us come and establish a permanent ,christian work among them4 ,british protection being here would render property safer and less liable to plunder4 ,leaving ,coconanny early next morning1 we made our way to ,dodo4 ,the neatness of the places visited was everywhere noticeable1 the people in their very expressions seeming to welcome 8the missionaries0 who had come to visit them4 ,there is nothing strikingly beautiful about the part of the ,bargroo country that ,i visited4 ,mangroves extend to the village of ,dodo1 which we have in abundance in ,sherbro4 ,the scene to me was rather monotonous4 8,we reached ,dodo late in the evening1 and after the usual ceremony1 which consists in giving the chief presents1 we disclosed to him the nature of our journey1 among other things telling him that we desired very much to get children from his territory to train in our mission for missionaries4 ,for his people he could not speak just then1 but his majesty informed us that the matter would be brought before them for consideration as soon as practicable2 he was in a position to speak for himself1 and would give the only son large enough to leave home at the time4 ,a large goat was slain and brought in and laid before us1 with a peck of rice1 for our supper4 ,although we were very hungry1 this was more than we felt able to consume at one or two meals4 ,a hind quarter was sent in to the chief1 the rest being shared between ourselves and our men4 ,here we stopped overnight4 ,the place is strongly barricaded1 and is very neat and cleanly4 ,a place was offered our ,mission on which to establish a station4 ,here is a fine opportunity to make a step more directly toward the interior4 ,they want us to come2 what must we tell them8 ,brother ,jackson visits the chief as often as time and strength will allow4 ,he was once ransomed by ,brother ,snelson when on the point of being sent to ,freetown1 accused and found guilty of selling slaves4 ,they dread very much to fall into the hands of the ,english1 and he was a happy man when ,brother ,snelson paid his ransom for him1 and stood between him and the ,english authorities4 ,he has given up warring1 and his people are seemingly prosperous and happy4 ,his subjects are chiefly ,sherbros1 but they speak ,mendi as well as their mother tongue4 ,our ,mission1 through former missionaries1 is known far into the interior1 and the natives generally are favorably disposed toward it4 ,we left ,dodo early next morning1 homeward bound1 with ,joe1 the chief's son1 with us4 ,he wore only nature's garment1 and seemed as happy as a bird4 ,the people here don't bother themselves too much about clothing4 ,industry is characteristic of them4 ,we stopped at places that we visited on our advance up the river1 and were informed in most cases that the 8big man0 was away1 or the chief at ,dodo4 ,humper ,ranko had not been consulted4 ,the people dare not do anything of this nature without first consulting their head4 ,however1 we succeeded in getting four children1 who were carried1 as we found them--without a rag on--to ,avery4 ,there are two places in this wilderness of moral darkness now open to us which1 ,i think1 could be worked up with very small expense to the ,mission4 ,both are on the ,bargroo ,river1 leading toward the interior1 which is navigable at all seasons of the year by small boats4 ,may the ,lord in ,his own good time send to these our benighted brethren the advantages of a ,christian civilization4 ,,kaw-,,mendi4 ,in accordance with your request ,i visited1 last month1 ,kaw-,mendi and vicinity1 where the banner of the ,cross was first unfurled in this part of a heathen land by men sent out by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,this place1 as you will remember1 was deserted for a long time4 ,of late years ,mr4 ,j4 ,m4 ,williams1 of his own accord and on his own responsibility1 has resumed the work4 ,here lie some of the sainted dead who fell in pure devotion to the cause of the ,christian religion1 to the cause of suffering and unenlightened humanity4 ,a mangrove tree here and there and roads leading in different directions only remind one that once better things were here4 ,some of the scholars who attended school when ,kaw-,mendi was in her bloom are still round about1 and they still remember their old teachers1 many of whom1 doubtless1 are now gone4 ,they all seemed glad to have us come and visit them4 ,one of the 8,amistads0 is here--,father ,smith4 ,he is growing quite old2 yet he is active4 ,old ,aunt ,maria and ,limby are still alive and can tell you all about ,mr4 ,raymond and others who1 in the infancy of missions here1 came to ,africa4 ,brother ,williams has prayer meetings in his country house1 mornings and evenings1 to which those near are invited to come4 ,regular preaching services are held in a country chapel on ,sundays4 ,the chapel has been recently built1 and the membership is such as to necessitate its being organized and dedicated4 ,old pupils of the ,mission1 who had lapsed into heathen habits1 having long been left without any spiritual leader1 have been reclaimed and brought into the church4 ,the chief is favorably disposed toward missionaries and accompanied us to many places in his territory4 ,were it not for his favor1 ,brother ,williams could not get along so well in his work4 ,there are #ba boys under ,mr4 ,williams' immediate care in his country house1 7which is very neat and comfortable71 whom he is instructing4 ,he feeds and clothes them1 and how he does it is a mystery to me4 ,one thing helps him1 and that is his agricultural department1 connected with his school4 ,his boys are taught to work4 ,although the farm is small1 still it is very good4 ,we took ,brother ,williams by surprise and notwithstanding his poor accommodation1 as he termed it1 we 7,mrs4 ,miller1 ,mr4 ,jowett and myself7 spent two or three days very pleasantly in and about ,kaw-,mendi4 ,we went up the ,little ,boom as far as ,kambia4 ,this was a very strongly barricaded town1 held by ,tom ,cabby ,smith1 the most powerful and wealthy chief in all this region of country4 ,he died last year1 and his estate is going to ruin4 ,the walls have fallen1 the slaves are widely scattered1 and things in general are in a very unsettled state4 ,he was once connected with the ,mission at ,kaw-,mendi as a common laborer and was a very industrious man4 ,villages all along the banks of the river were flourishing and rice crops promising4 ,everything indicated prosperity1 so far as the natives are able to be prosperous without the light of the ,gospel4 ,the country is ,mendi-speaking1 and though it is large and the people are plentiful1 and are not opposed to the ,christian religion1 still there is but one man in this country to tell them of ,jesus4 ,i am favorably impressed with the country and the people4 ,it is a day's travel from ,good ,hope4 ,stretching out toward the interior1 the country is low1 but ,brother ,williams pronounces it healthy4 ,he is a ,west ,indian1 and has lived in ,africa for the last twenty years4 ,it may be that he is quite acclimated1 and it is not unhealthy for him4 99 99 99 99 99 ,places up the ,big ,boom were also visited in the interest of the ,mission1 some of which were formerly occupied by missionaries under the general direction of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 but are now abandoned4 ,three of these1 doubtless1 are well remembered--,salem ,hill1 ,lawana1 and ,mo-,tappan4 ,the lower portion of the ,boom ,river waters a section of country that is very fertile1 and might be called1 very appropriately1 the 8,palm-growing ,region40 ,the towns in this section of country are prosperous looking1 and as one beholds palm-trees stretching into the distance1 he can but think of the old missionary hymn-- 8,from ,greenland's icy mountains1 etc41 ,from many a palmy plain40 ,surely from these plains1 rich in the production of palm-nuts1 etc41 they are calling ,christian men and women to deliver them1 not from physical bondage1 but from that bondage that enslaves the soul forever--the bondage of eternal death6 ,,gbap1 ,,trom1 ,,marketah4 ,we stopped all night at a place called ,gbap1 where the king of a large extent of country1 lying or bordering on the ,big ,boom1 resides4 ,we had very comfortable lodging here1 although we failed in seeing his majesty the king4 ,mrs4 ,miller was along2 also ,mr4 ,jowett1 our interpreter4 ,two of the schoolboys also attended us4 ,the next morning we got a good peep at the place4 ,it was very neat1 and ,i was informed that the ,mission once had a teacher here4 ,shoving off 7you must remember we travel in boats71 we advanced slowly up the river1 whose current had become quite strong4 ,the day's travel was very unsatisfactory1 and our night's rest more so2 for the mosquitoes are so bad in this part of the country1 that children and cows have been killed by them4 ,this our men say4 ,i am sure they were bad enough that night4 ,mrs4 ,miller seemed a perfect marvel to these savage people4 ,we could scarcely go to bed1 such as it was1 for their looking in upon us1 talking about ,mrs4 ,miller4 ,i was so black1 and so much resembled other ,africans1 that ,i was not the centre of attraction4 ,still1 our interpreter informed us that they complimented us as 8,nyandingo te te0--very fine1 or fine for true4 ,morning was gladly hailed by all4 ,mosquitoes was the principal theme4 ,each one had battled1 evidently1 all night1 not for place1 but for life1 against these pests4 ,we moved off early1 and shall ever remember the village and the night spent here4 ,its name is ,trom4 ,i am sure if ,i had been in a tomb that night1 with something of the vault kind over me1 my rest would have been more peaceful than in this dreary place4 ,the people wherever we stopped kindly received the missionaries4 ,we made better time from ,trom to our next night's resting-place4 ,we entered the ,kittam ,river1 early leading off toward the ,gallinas1 a tribe that also speaks ,mendi4 ,mendi is the predominant language of a very large extent of country4 ,the lower part of the ,big ,boom ,river1 which is called the ,bullom1 runs through a beautiful section of country4 ,the ,kittam also has very picturesque scenery4 ,the people looked contented and happy2 the country elevated and healthy4 ,we travelled several miles down this river1 and on visiting the king1 the reception that was given us showed that he highly appreciated our visit4 ,i am informed that no missionary had ever been here before4 ,he promised the mission two children4 ,after holding conference with the people he offered a place to plant a mission station in which to educate his children4 ,he had them in his villages in abundance4 ,i informed him that ,i would 8look my head0--think over the matter4 ,all were impressed with the beauty of this country1 with the neatness of its villages and the good disposition of the people4 ,the king's daughter made so much fuss over ,mrs4 ,miller1 dressed so differently from herself1 that she became quite uneasy4 ,large crowds came around and joined her in welcoming their strange friend4 ,my color again made me more common and less noticeable4 ,we had a good night's rest in this place4 ,we left ,coranko and the ,soboo chief and his people the next day1 feeling happy in the thought that missionaries are wanted in this place1 and that the ,lord in his own good time will send them to it4 8,the harvest1 truly1 is plenteous1 but the laborers are few40 ,the people stood on the shore while we sailed away4 ,we met persons in our travels whom we knew in ,bonthe1 at ,good ,hope4 ,they always did their best to make us happy4 ,all ,i can say is1 may the ,soboo chief and people have1 before a great while1 some one to teach them the way to ,christ1 man's only ,redeemer4 ,entering again the ,big ,boom en route to ,mo-,tappan1 we made good time1 stopping at a few villages along the way4 ,no missionary is in all this country4 ,we stopped overnight with one ,mr4 ,collier1 who carries on trade near the river1 in a place called ,marketah1 people's market4 ,it was ,saturday night1 and he was very busy closing accounts for the week4 ,our reception was a cordial one4 ,we spent the ,sabbath here and were much pleased to see what is doing for these benighted people4 ,we had services at eleven o'clock1 which the natives attended4 ,it was interesting1 and ,i feel that a good impression was made4 ,such meetings--,i mean those consisting of reading of the ,bible1 commenting1 etc4--are held regularly by ,mr4 ,collier for the community4 ,they surely can do a great deal in helping on the good cause4 ,it were better and safer for trade1 if religious instruction were in all this country4 ,this part of the ,big ,boom is often visited by the horrors of war4 ,whole villages are sometimes laid low in one night1 the inhabitants put to the sword or carried off into slavery4 ,these wars are not waged because the aggressors have been in any way wronged by the attacked1 but just for the sake of plunder4 ,it is now something over a year since war visited this part of the ,big ,boom1 but it has left its signs4 ,villages that were deserted are being rebuilt4 ,traders are resuming their business1 and peace is gradually returning to all this region4 ,we left early ,monday morning1 having spent a pleasant ,sabbath with our friends in ,marketah4 ,the current became stronger as we advanced toward the interior4 ,the winds were adverse1 so our progress was somewhat like the missionary work1 slow4 ,we had long since left mangroves1 with their malarial swamps4 ,that we were getting some distance from ,sherbro was visible from the very appearance of things4 ,the farther we advanced into the interior1 the more uneasiness seemed to be depicted on the countenances of ,africa's enslaved children4 ,africa is her own greatest enemy4 ,war and slavery curse her most1 bring misery where happiness might reign4 ,when you launch out of ,british jurisdiction1 slaves are common4 ,this traffic is carried on by the natives themselves1 and the biggest man owns the largest number of slaves and has the greatest number of wives4 ,polygamy is common1 where men are able to support more than one wife2 but you may rest assured that when means of support give out1 the women are found giving out too4 ,this day's travel brought us to ,baikal1 a strongly barricaded town4 ,we did not go inside1 but the music and noise within showed plainly that ,ham's sons and daughters here were having a good time in a country dance4 ,,mo-,,tappan1 ,,salem ,,hill1 ,,lawana4 ,we rested overnight1 but early next morning pushed on for ,mo-,tappan1 the extreme interior ,mission station held by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,we stopped at villages along our journey1 where signs of late wars are still apparent4 ,each man is armed with either sword or cutlass4 ,i am told that they keep these near them in time of peace to fight with1 but in time of war they wrap them up in mats1 give them to their wives1 and ask their feet to save them by flight4 ,the ,mendi people are treacherous and cruel in war1 and not at all brave4 ,i hope the time may soon come when all this region will enjoy peace and righteousness in ,god4 ,this country is elevated1 with beautiful bills stretching away into the distance4 ,we enjoyed the fine scenery4 ,about ten o'clock we reached ,salem ,hill4 ,the massive walls built here by the former missionaries are still standing1 but the place is so covered with shrubbery and vines that it is with great difficulty that access to it is obtained4 ,the ,hill and scenery are splendid1 but this foundation1 of no use to any one1 made us feel sad1 everything around looked so forlorn4 ,the large village that once stood near has disappeared1 as so many ,african villages and towns have done4 ,along toward night we reached ,lawana1 where we remained overnight4 ,here1 though several years' labor was given to this place1 no sign of past missionary work is visible4 ,the place was captured in war2 the inhabitants1 all but a few who were ransomed1 were put to death or sold into slavery4 ,our resting place here was not large1 nor was it very comfortable4 ,the chief was not seen until our return from ,mo-,tappan4 ,he evidently feared us1 because the portions of country where wars are numerous are often or sometimes visited by the ,english to ask the people to keep quiet4 ,we left early next morning for ,mo-,tappan1 arriving there about #i o'clock4 ,the place is now a regular canebreak4 ,the tomb of the late ,mr4 ,brooks is the only thing that reminded us that the white man had been here4 ,our stay was short4 ,no one at all lives here now4 ,it was broken up by war4 8,we now retraced our steps for home1 stopping at ,lawana4 ,we then saw the chief1 who gave us a cordial welcome4 ,three children were brought home by us to be trained for future workers4 ,the current carried us down quite rapidly4 ,we stopped at but few places on our return2 our ,mission is well known in all this country1 and it will be easy for us again to gain footing in former places held by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,large outlays are altogether unnecessary2 plain houses1 on cheap plans1 are things for a country so subject to changes from war4 ,the real ,mendi people are here1 and ,i hope that the banner of ,christ will soon again in triumph wave over the strongholds once held by our ,mission4 ,pray that we may be guided in attempting to extend our work1 and that everything may be done to ,his honor and glory4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 8,california ,chinese ,mission40 ,auxiliary to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,,president3 ,rev4 ,j4 ,k4 ,mc,lean1 ,d4 ,d4 new griefs of late4 ,in days past1 when reproach and opposition came mainly from those whose anti-,chinese rage was simply an expression of an anti-,christian spirit1 it was comparatively easy to endure it4 ,and even when those professing godliness have cringed before ungodly prejudices1 and shut the door of the house of ,god upon the ,chinese ,sunday-school1 and received1 if at all1 with left-handed welcomes to the church on earth ,chinese who gave every token of having been accepted by ,christ to the kingdom of ,heaven1 we remembered with comfort the 8sure foundation0 which has 8this seal2 the ,lord knoweth them that are ,his40 ,in all these experiences1 and even when the violence of lawless hoodlumism for the time almost emptied our school-rooms1 and the intensity of anti-,chinese feeling on the part of ,americans was provoking an equally intense anti-,american feeling on the part of the ,chinese1 so that we found it difficult to bring them within reach of ,gospel influences1 we had this to console us1 that our ,chinese brethren themselves1 almost without exception1 seemed to be 8steadfast1 immovable1 always abounding in the work of the ,lord40 ,it is true1 some who were received to our ,association of ,christian ,chinese were found1 before the six or eight months of their probation had expired1 not to be sincere1 and were consequently never baptized2 but of those who had been received to the church1 ,i was accustomed to say that thus far not one1 so far as we knew1 had brought any reproach upon the name of ,christ4 ,this was a glad surprise to me4 ,i had read ,paul's letters to the churches of ,corinth and of ,galatia1 and the messages of ,jesus to the seven churches of ,asia1 and was well aware that the disappointments which attended apostolic missions occurred often enough to-day in heathen lands to make our missionaries there rejoice with trembling over those apparently born of ,god2 but1 till recently1 no such disappointment had been visited upon us4 ,there were occasional backslidings1 a temporary recession of interest1 which started fears and called us to earnest prayer2 but1 in general1 ,i could say1 that ,i knew of no group of ,american ,christians in whose steadfastness and zeal a pastor could take more delight than we could in our ,chinese brethren4 ,and this is still true2 perhaps more evidently true than before1 in view of the course which they have pursued towards some 8false brethren40 ,about three months ago ,i visited ,sacramento1 in order to make new arrangements for the accommodation of our ,mission there4 ,the room which we had occupied free of rent for many years being no longer at our service1 ,i was enabled to rent1 at a comparatively low rate1 a ,mission house so well located1 so roomy1 and so well adapted to our peculiar work1 that ,i came away gratefully realizing that the ,master himself had gone before me1 and believing that ,he was about to lead us into a larger and better work there than we had ever done before4 ,the added expense1 however1 caused me to withdraw temporarily the paid helper1 and to trust to the volunteer aid which our ,chinese brethren promised to give4 ,among these volunteers1 the one who seemed at once most able and most willing was ,wong ,wing4 ,he spoke ,english well2 seemed to be a natural leader2 and while exhibiting some traits which made one stand somewhat in doubt1 yet1 on the whole1 was trusted both by his ,chinese brethren and their ,american friends4 ,but he proved to be a ,judas4 ,he carried the bag and was a thief4 ,having possessed himself of several hundred dollars from the hard earnings of his brethren1 he attempted to decamp1 but has been brought back1 and is now awaiting a trial which cannot but consign him to ,state's ,prison4 ,the concern of our brethren1 however1 seems to be less for their own losses than for the dishonor brought upon the cause of ,christ4 8,how shall we preach in the street any more10 they say1 8unless we continue to let all men see that while we pity ,wong ,wing1 we hate his evil deeds80 ,and they have spared neither pains nor expense in bringing him to justice1 as1 indeed1 by the rules of their ,association they were bound to do4 ,in ,san ,francisco we have had one case even sadder than this1 which has made our hearts ache through and through1 and two or three cases which1 without bringing overt reproach1 yet involved excision from the church4 ,and at the same time with all these griefs came dissensions among the brethren in ,oakland1 which spread widely1 and for a while threatened great disaster4 ,these1 however1 have been allayed1 and1 indeed1 so overruled that the work1 on the whole1 has been helped rather than hindered through them4 ,i suppose it would be neither needful nor wise for me to go further into details1 even if the space at my command admitted of it2 but it seemed to be the dictate even of honesty1 since1 like ,paul1 ,i have ventured to 8boast0 over the character of our ,chinese believers1 that ,i should not conceal these humbling facts4 ,yet ,i still will 8boast0 that never did ,i witness in any church more prompt1 wise and effective ,christian discipline than these events have called forth in our ,association of ,christian ,chinese2 and ,god will1 sooner or later1 overrule it all for good4 ,,bethany ,,school4 ,i append some clippings from the last monthly report of the school taught in the lecture-room of ,bethany church1 ,san ,francisco4 ,after speaking of the great pleasure she finds in the work in general1 ,miss ,worley says3 8,the last month has been one of great anxiety to me4 ,some who had attended the school for a long time1 and were still attending1 had been trying to send others away4 ,in some cases1 by using threats1 they had succeeded4 ,months ago ,i was requested by two scholars to expel one pupil for this offense1 but ,i wanted to try him a little longer4 ,but #8,one sickly sheep affects the flock ,and poisons all the rest4' ,in this instance only a few were thus affected4 ,some were too faithful to be moved by threats4 ,at length the issue came in this way3 ,this scholar became aware that one of the pupils was about to join the ,association4 ,he set his heathen relatives upon him1 and they threatened to kill him4 ,to keep him away from the school1 they got possession1 one day1 of the key of the #8,bethany ,home' and locked him in4 ,he1 finding the door locked1 and no chance of its being opened till after the close of the school1 went out the back way and climbed over the fence 7a close board fence about twenty feet high1 erected to protect the rear of the house from hoodlumism74 ,he now thought he would get to school all right4 ,he was mistaken1 for1 stationed in the corridor between the church and the lecture-room were these ,chinese who had locked him in4 ,as he passed them they struck him across his eye and hand4 ,i found it necessary then to expel them2 yet ,i feel that they cannot forget what they have learned1 and ,i live in hope that bread cast upon the waters #8will be found after many days4' 8,i am glad to say that this good and faithful scholar 7for such he is7 who was hurt1 gave his name at the next meeting as a candidate for membership in the ,association4 ,the only obstacle in the way of another scholar is the fear of his parents in ,china4 ,he has not yet learned by heart that #8he that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me4' 8,since that night1 and the expulsion of those persecutors1 ,i seem to be constantly adding fresh names to my roll4 ,working scholars are leaving no stone unturned to increase our numbers4 ,i feel thankful for such scholars4 ,friends kindly help me in the work1 but what ,i most need is a ,chinese helper4 ,i trust that at no distant time ,i may have one4 ,the scholars who are able are willing to explain1 but they need all the little time they have for study4 ,i find the most studious pupils make the sincere ,christians40 ,to which appeal for a ,chinese helper the superintendent adds his own ,amen4 ,but we cannot have one without more means than now we have at our command4 ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,children',s ,,influence4 ,,miss ,,mary ,,bailey1 ,,vermont4 ,children's influence is too much overlooked in the ,mission work4 ,parents1 ,sabbath-school teachers1 and missionary agents do not take the pains they might to create in them a missionary spirit4 ,as soon as they 8can speak and go alone0 they should be 8bent0 into missionary workers4 ,they can be taught to take as much interest in the condition of the ,freedmen1 ,chinese and ,indians1 as in 8,mother ,hubbard10 8,jack and the ,bean ,stalk10 etc4 ,especially when they are called upon to give their pennies should it be explained to them for what purposes their moneys are solicited4 ,a little mite of a girl came to me and asked for a penny4 8,what would you do with a penny80 said ,i4 8,carry it to ,sunday-school40 8,what do you carry it to ,sunday-school for80 8,to put it into the conniption box40 8,what do you put it into the #8conniption box' for80 8,for the man40 8,what does the man do with it80 8,he put it into his pocket60 ,after that1 when missionary papers came1 ,i read them through to her4 ,by glancing ahead ,i saw what the facts were1 then ,i would read them in words she could understand4 ,she was so charmed with that kind of reading she would take a toy book out of my hand and hunt up a missionary paper to be read to her instead4 ,when she saw me glancing along she would exclaim1 8,don't let your eyes zig-zag over the page2 read every word60 ,the ,freedmen interested her very much4 ,she said one morning1 8,i prayed for the colored people last night2 ,i told ,jesus they suffered40 ,at another time ,i read about a colored student who was anxious to become a minister1 and she 8told the ,lord that he wanted to be a minister40 ,last ,sabbath a missionary preached a very interesting sermon at our church1 in the interests of the ,freedmen4 ,i hoped he would speak a few words to the children1 but he did not4 ,i asked a little girl of nine years1 who thinks she would like to be a missionary1 how she liked the sermon8 ,she replied that she could not understand it4 ,i told her that he said the ,catholics were sending more teachers among the colored people than we were1 and they were fast becoming their converts4 ,she quickly replied1 8,then we shall be slaves2 we had better look out60 ,if all children under religious instruction were engaged to do all they could in the cause
