to be held the last week of ,october1 in the city of ,chicago4 ,we suggest to our ,eastern friends1 or those from the far ,west1 who have in their plans a visit to that city within the next three months1 that1 if possible1 they delay their going until that time1 that they may prove to our friends of the interior their interest in the work1 and add to it the impulse of their presence4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,pains ,,of ,,retrenchment4 ,we do not propose a treatment of this topic in the abstract1 to tell of the internal pressure for retrenchment from the collapsed condition of our treasury1 or of the outcries which accompany the red line made by the surgical knife4 ,we simply lay before our readers the facts in regard to our latest efforts in this direction4 ,we have had a school for fourteen years at ,athens1 ,alabama4 ,miss ,m4 ,f4 ,wells has been the principal from its beginning1 and has been one of our most faithful and most successful teachers and missionaries4 ,miss ,underwood has been her assistant for two years1 and ,rev4 ,horace ,taylor has been pastor of the vigorous and enterprising church which has grown up by the side of1 and indeed out of1 the school4 ,some #aej scholars have been in attendance at the school1 and its work has been more and more satisfactory year by year4 ,we had a building there which was1 however1 in bad repair3 its walls had been propped up these last months1 and it was becoming really unsafe1 so that it must be abandoned or replaced4 ,but to erect a suitable and permanent building would cost #e1jjj1 and we had no such sum to expend2 and the question came to be1 ,shall we build1 or close the school and transfer the teachers to some other field8 ,reluctantly this latter decision was made3--indeed1 we did not make it2 it was made for us4 ,we could not build1 and the decision was sent on to ,athens4 ,on the first of ,july1 ,miss ,wells wrote from a sick bed1 of the shock which this decision gave to her1 though it had been intimated beforehand4 ,she said3 ,we thank you cordially for the delay in the announcement of your decision1 for had it come in the midst of our closing exercises1 students and teachers would have been unfitted for the work upon them4 ,our examinations continuing through four days were largely attended throughout1 a crowded house greeting us every day4 ,the general voice of the people was3 8,examinations grow better all the time20 8,this is the best we have ever had20 8,i will send all my children the first day next year1 and not keep them out for anything20 8,bless the ,lord for this school20 8,it makes me cry for joy when ,i see what it has done for our people20 8,we are all going to help build a new house20 8,will start a brick-yard next week1 if you say so1 right in these grounds20 8,all will help20 8,even the idle boys on the street will gladly lend a hand20 etc41 etc4 ,on the whole1 our examinations and closing exercises were more satisfactory to us this year than ever before4 ,there has been a deeper earnestness in study1 and a higher grade of scholarship has been reached4 ,on the day following1 ,miss ,underwood wrote3 ,it is pitiful to witness the grief of the people4 ,in the faces of young and old one seems to read1 8,a calamity has fallen upon us40 ,some of them go silently about with bowed heads and spirits1 8clothed in sackcloth and ashes40 ,others say1 8,we will arise and build2 surely the ,lord will help those who help themselves40 ,the universal feeling is that the school must not close and ,miss ,wells must not go4 ,without consulting her1 they have called a mass meeting for to-morrow night1 to see what can be done towards the erection of a new building4 ,you will be promptly notified of results4 ,on the #dth of ,july1 ,mr4 ,taylor1 pastor of the church1 wrote as follows3 ,that night1 at a lecture at the ,court ,house1 ,i read a note from ,miss ,wells announcing your decision4 ,the people were much pained4 ,the open rejoicing of many of the white people hurt the colored people more than anything else4 ,they asked me1 8,can nothing be done to prevent this80 ,i told them ,i thought not1 for the orders were positive4 8,if we build the school-house1 can ,miss ,wells stay and the school go on80 ,i said ,i didn't know about that1 and asked them if they knew what they were talking about2 that a school-house such as ought to be put up there would cost #e1jjj8 ,they said1 8,we can do it1 and we will do it40 ,so ,i telegraphed you1 8,if people put up school building1 will school be maintained80 ,that night1 ,wednesday1 was our preparatory lecture4 ,the people decided to hold a meeting ,thursday night1 and notice was given at preparatory lecture2 so last night the church was filled by an earnest1 quiet audience4 ,colored men were elected chairman and secretary4 ,a committee of five colored men was appointed to draft resolutions1 of which the following is a copy as nearly as ,i can remember3 8,whereas the maintenance of ,trinity ,school is necessary for the education of the colored people of ,north ,alabama1 therefore be it 8,resolved1 #ast4 ,that we hear with deep sorrow the decision of the ,american ,missionary ,association to discontinue the school1 sell the property1 and send the teachers to other points4 #b4 ,that we earnestly request the ,american ,missionary ,association to reconsider this decision1 and permit ,miss ,wells to remain at the head of the school4 #c4 ,in order to enable the school to be kept up1 we propose to put up a good substantial school building1 and as an assurance of our purpose and ability to do this we forward the following subscription list40 ,the resolutions were immediately and unanimously adopted4 ,two men then spoke with trembling voices and tears in their eyes1 and in thirty minutes names were taken with pledges to the amount of #b1aif4 ,we then checked the movement1 and explained that #e1jjj was necessary1 but that we had raised the #b1jjj we wished to raise there4 ,a unanimous vote authorized me to make the report of the meeting to the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and that they wished the house and lot to be held forever for the education of the colored people of ,north ,alabama2 that if the ,american ,missionary ,association would permit them to buy the land at a reasonable price they would do it2 or the ,american ,missionary ,association might hold the land and the people the house1 neither to sell out without the consent of the other4 ,an old blind man said1 8,an old blind horse ain't good for much1 but when you get him into the tread-mill he is as good as any other2 so when you get to making brick ,i will turn the crank to draw the water40 ,we got another #ajj subscription and immediately adjourned4 ,this morning ,i have received another subscription of #ab1 making in all #b1cjh4 ,i ought to have mentioned that a committee of seven was appointed to solicit subscriptions on the streets4 ,if you say so1 the school-house shall be completed ,january #ast1 #ahhj4 ,i earnestly request that the petition be granted4 ,at the last meeting of our ,executive ,committee these letters were read4 ,all were deeply moved1 and the response was hearty and unanimous1 ,let them arise and build1 and the funds needed for the continuance of the school shall be appropriated and paid4 ,we cannot stop such a work4 ,we cannot refuse such a plea4 ,why1 the educating power of this movement upon the colored people of that place1 and its effect1 perhaps1 upon the white population as well1 is worth ten times the money involved in both the building and the school4 ,and yet we are told that the blacks are becoming indifferent to education4 ,and now1 dear friend1 you who are thinking how the ,lord has not prospered you quite as much as he did a few years ago1 when you have read this1 will you not put back that #ajj1 or that #a1 you were going to take from your usual gift to us1 that such work as this may go on8 ,it is your retrenchment that compels ours4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,freedmen',s ,,missions ,,aid ,,society4 ,the annual meeting of our ,english ,auxiliary took place at ,union ,chapel1 ,islington 7,rev4 ,dr4 ,allon71 ,june #fth4 ,the ,earl of ,aberdeen presided4 ,the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,o4 ,h4 ,white read the general report of work done in the ,united ,states and to be done in ,africa4 ,the ,rev4 ,j4 ,gwynne ,jones presented the financial statement4 ,the total receipts had been #e1bgj2 #d1gbg had been expended in direct mission work1 and the balance in hand was #bje4 #c1jjj had been promised by ,mr4 ,arthington1 of ,leeds1 towards the establishment of a mission in ,central ,africa4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association had fully considered the proposal and deemed it practicable1 and they desired now to raise another #c1jjj in this country1 trusting that they would be able to command funds in ,america for carrying on the work1 if its outfit should be substantially secured here4 ,miss ,jennie ,jackson1 of the ,jubilee ,singers1 then sang one of their plaintive hymns1 after which the presiding officer addressed the meeting1 referring to his personal observation of the slave trade in ,africa4 ,the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,moffat followed1 saying that he had been the servant of ,africa for sixty years4 ,since he went out as a missionary in #ahaf he had been incessantly engaged in advancing the ,redeemer's kingdom in ,africa4 ,he had had many opportunities of witnessing what the ,gospel could do in ,africa1 and he could testify that it was the salvation of every one that believed4 ,mr4 ,j4 ,b4 ,gough then spoke in his usual entertaining and forcible way4 ,on the motion of the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,allon1 seconded by the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,f4 ,billing1 the following resolution was adopted3 ,that this meeting desires to express the deep sense it entertains of the favoring providence of ,god in connection with the education of the emancipated slaves of ,america1 for teachers and missionaries to their own race1 and also in connection with the mission work accomplished by some of the society's students 7ex-slaves7 on the ,west ,coast of ,africa4 ,and this meeting would renewedly record its conviction that in the ,christian education of the ,freedmen we are working in the line of a special providential arrangement for a native agency for the evangelization of ,africa4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,missions ,,in ,,central ,,africa4 ,at the recent anniversary of the ,london ,missionary ,society1 the ,rev4 ,w4 ,f4 ,clarkson1 ,b4 ,a41 of ,birmingham1 made the following remarks upon ,missions in ,central ,africa3 8,and now1 turning to ,central ,africa1 what a solemn responsibility has been thrown upon the ,church of ,christ in connection with that vast continent6 ,true it is that the ,north of ,africa has been connected with ,european history ever since ,europe had a history1 and ,egypt1 especially1 is rich in associations of the most remote antiquity4 ,south ,africa has been colonized by modern ,european nations1 and the ,east and the ,west ,coasts have furnished the material for that iniquitous slave trade in which ,christian nations have not been ashamed to join hands with ,mohammedans in order to rob their fellow-men of their liberties4 8,but all this has touched only the fringe of this vast continent1 and the interior has been practically unknown4 ,look at the maps of a few years ago and you will see blank spaces1 relieved only by imaginary rivers and unverified mountains1 and the letterpress of the geography books was just as meagre and as unsatisfactory4 ,i chanced to light upon a school geography1 the other day1 published in #ahdg1 in which this was the description given3 #8,the interior of ,africa is little known4 ,the climate is so bad that the few ,europeans who travel there generally die before they return4' ,and it concluded by saying3 #8,most of the inhabitants are negroes4' ,i think that the young people of to-day may congratulate themselves that they have not to study the text-books of thirty years ago--at any rate1 on this question4 ,i need not remind this meeting how1 by the labors of eminent geographers and explorers and1 not the least1 missionaries1 this reproach has been rolled away1 and ,africa promises to be as widely known as is ,asia4 ,but it is more to the purpose of this meeting to express the admiration and the thankfulness with which we witness the ,church of ,christ1 of divers denominations1 taking up the solemn responsibilities thrown upon her1 and addressing herself to the evangelization of ,africa4 8,the ,church ,missionary ,society advancing to ,lake ,nyanza1 the ,scotch ,church taking possession of ,lake ,nyassa1 the ,baptist ,missionary ,society establishing itself on the banks of the ,congo2 and1 not to mention other kindred societies1 our own ,london ,missionary ,society advancing to ,lake ,tanganyika--are so many distinct columns of the great invading army which has gone forth to rescue ,africa from the power of the prince of this world1 and to bring it into subjection unto ,christ4 ,surely this is the dawning of the day which ,david ,livingstone rejoiced to see and was glad4 ,and ,i hope that ,i may take upon myself1 in your name1 respectfully to congratulate our venerable father and apostle1 ,dr4 ,moffat1 upon the advent of a time so rich in promise1 and so glowing with hope1 for that ,africa which he has so long and so lovingly served4 ,the report has spoken to us in forcible terms of the anxieties of the directors concerning the establishment of this ,central ,african ,mission1 and ,i think you will feel that nothing shows that anxiety more clearly than the action of the directors in regard to the offer of ,dr4 ,mullens1 that they should have accepted that offer and dispatched him1 if not to the front1 at any rate to the base of operations for this new campaign2 and he will carry with him to ,zanzibar our best wishes and our most earnest prayers in the enterprise which he has so promptly and so generously undertaken4 8,i think nothing can exaggerate the seriousness of the enterprise to which we1 as a society1 have committed ourselves in connection with ,central ,africa4 ,to have to travel #fjj or #gjj miles1 every mile of it measured out by the weary tread of human feet1 and to be accompanied by #bjj or #cjj porters1 not simply to carry your luggage1 but even to carry the very money with which you have to pay your way1 is no holiday excursion2 and to have to deal with native chiefs of difficult and capricious tempers1 with differing and oftentimes opposing interests1 demands qualities of the highest statesmanship4 ,to establish a mission like that of ,lake ,tanganyika1 the lake itself being of the length of the distance1 say from ,london to ,carlisle1 and twenty miles broad1 with all its shores lined with populous villages--to establish a mission in such a centre of such a district demands an energy and a zeal and a patience equal to those of the greatest missionaries that have ever lived2 and to do this1 with the certain loss of the comforts and conveniences of civilized life1 and with the equally certain risk of losing life itself1 demands a heroism equal to that of the ancient martyr4 ,all honor to the brethren who have responded to the demands of ,christ1 and have given themselves to this sacred work4 ,we sympathize with those that are living and working1 and we shall never forget those that have laid down their lives in this blessed service4 ,dr4 ,black in the ,south1 ,lieut4 ,smith in the ,north1 and our own ,j4 ,b4 ,thomson1 and others who have fallen with them in this warfare--shall not the ,church of ,christ register them1 each one1 in the roll of heroes and of martyrs1 by whose immortal example she will seek to stimulate the generations to come80 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,education ,,of ,,freedmen4 ,mrs4 ,harriet ,beecher ,stowe has contributed two articles with the above title to the ,june and ,july numbers of the ,north ,american ,review1 tracing the history of this work1 and giving a valuable summary of its present status4 ,we reprint a brief paragraph and the six general propositions1 of which the facts given are offered as the proof3 8,for years patriots1 statesmen1 conscientious and ,christian men1 had toiled and agonized over the inscrutable problem1 ,how could slavery be abolished without ruin to the country8 ,madison1 ,jefferson1 ,washington1 all had their schemes--all based on the idea that after emancipation it would be impossible for the whites and the blacks to live harmoniously together4 ,sudden emancipation was spoken of as something involving danger1 bloodshed and violence2 and yet1 as no one could propose a feasible system of preparation1 the drift of the ,southern mind had come to be toward indefinite perpetuation and extension4 8,our emancipation was forced upon us--it was sudden2 it gave no time for preparation2 and our national honor forced us to give not only emancipation1 but the rights and defenses of citizenship4 ,this was the position in which the war left us4 ,we had four million new ,united ,states citizens in our ,union1 without property1 without education1 with such morals as may be inferred from the legal status in which they had been kept2 they were surrounded by their former white owners1 every way embittered toward them1 and in no wise disposed to smooth their path to liberty and competence4 8,that in such a sudden and astounding change there should have been struggle and conflict2 that the reconstruction of former slave ,states1 in such astonishingly new conditions of society1 should have been with some difficulty1 wrath and opposition2 that there should have been contentions1 mistakes1 mismanagements1 and plenty of undesirable events to make sensation articles for the daily press1 was to be expected4 8,but wherever upon ,god's earth was such an unheard-of revolution in the state of human society accomplished with so little that was to be deprecated8 8,for in this year1 #ahgh1 certain propositions of very great significance bear assertion1 and can be maintained by ample proof3 8#a4 ,the cotton crop raised by free labor is the largest by some millions that ever has been raised in the ,united ,states4 ,that settles the question as to the free-labor system4 8#b4 ,the legal status of the negro is universally conceded as a finality by the leading minds of the ,south4 8#c4 ,the common-school system has been established throughout the ,southern ,states1 and recognized in theory by the wisest ,southern men as to be applied impartially to whites and blacks4 8#d4 ,all of the large religious denominations are conducting educational movements among the ,freedmen on a large scale4 ,there are scattered through the ,southern ,states1 under the patronage of different denominations1 thirty-nine chartered and endowed institutions for the higher education of colored people as teachers1 ministers1 physicians1 farmers and mechanics4 ,besides these1 there are sixty-nine schools of a lower grade4 ,it is calculated that in the last sixteen years twenty million dollars has been contributed and invested in the work of educating the ,freedmen4 8#e4 ,leading and influential men at the ,south are in many cases openly patrons of these educational efforts4 ,several of these institutions have been generously assisted by the ,states in which they are founded4 ,the last reports of all these institutions represent them as in a successful and flourishing condition4 8#f4 ,the colored race is advancing in material wealth and prosperity40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,congregationalism ,,in ,,the ,,south4 #d4 ,its ,relation to the ,african ,race4 ,,dist4 ,,sec4 ,c4 ,l4 ,,woodworth1 ,,boston4 ,beyond any sentiment of honor1 or of ambition to do our share of the immense work thrown in an hour upon the churches of this land1 is the higher aim to introduce our faith and our polity to the ,african race4 ,not only is it our reproach that we have been1 almost exclusively1 confined to a small part of the ,english-speaking people1 but we shall deserve our littleness if we consent to be limited to this nation1 or even to this continent4 ,the world needs the principles we have in trust1 and will not reach its best until it attains them4 ,and1 now1 before us is an open field1 rich in resources of life and wealth1 all untilled4 ,one-sixth of the human family waits to be moulded by ,christian influence4 ,a continent bares its bosom and asks ,christianity for her strongest and best4 ,why should the ,church1 which took possession of one continent and gave it the most benign institutions earth ever saw1 hesitate to lay hold of another1 and plant it with the good seed of the kingdom8 ,there is something immensely stimulating in the thought of breaking forth after a lost race4 ,all we need is an infusion of the enterprise which guided the ,pilgrims to ,plymouth ,rock4 ,a new continent for ,christ is what we need to take up as our watch-word1 and pass along the lines till our membership is fired with a holy zeal to win its #bjj1jjj1jjj unto the ,lamb that was slain4 ,and if we were intent on this1 how easy it would be to connect the work here with the work there4 ,if1 when the door opened into the ,south1 we had gone in with our plans to save the ,african race1 we could hardly have done differently from what we have4 ,we have planted our schools and our churches in the very centres of population and of influence4 ,we have a large force of young men and women in our schools1 and our churches are constituted almost wholly of young ,christian scholars4 ,how easy it would be to turn the whole tide of their study and thought and influence towards ,africa6 ,there is in the ,african mind of the ,south now a strong drawing toward the land of their fathers4 ,the schemes of colonization afloat all through the ,south show it4 ,the hundreds of young men and young women banded together in our schools and churches to go to ,africa as teachers or as preachers1 if the way shall open1 show it4 ,they only need the guiding intelligence to undertake to plant on ,africa's shores another ,plymouth ,colony and ,massachusetts ,bay4 ,and this opportunity comes to the ,congregational church and finds it well prepared to enter on the training of ,christian scholars and preachers for this work4 ,our churches on the ground are few in number1 but filled with young1 fresh1 intelligent1 pure material1 and co-operate with our schools to bring forward the teachers and leaders of the ,african race4 ,is it all chance that puts us in this position and gives us this advantage in laying the foundations of education and religion for another race and another continent8 ,god's plan may include black as well as white pilgrims1 and it may be ours to impart the pilgrim spirit and prepare the men who shall make a new ,africa1 as our fathers made a new ,america4 ,this is possible to us as a church1 and we ought to work towards it with unflagging zeal4 ,we can only lose our advantage by our own neglect and lack of enterprise4 ,we are in the front of workers for ,africa4 ,eight or ten of our young ,christian scholars are already on ,african soil4 ,they send back a call for reinforcements1 and the reinforcements will be ready as soon as our churches furnish the equipments and give them marching orders4 ,the work may be long and rough2 our fathers found it so here4 ,congregationalism is used to that4 ,indeed1 she does best when on the strain4 ,she is grand when she leads the forlorn hope4 ,easy1 comfortable1 self-pleasing life is not the atmosphere in which she grows tough1 sturdy1 courageous and aggressive4 ,show her something to do for ,christ1 something calling for sacrifice1 some mighty battle to be fought for her ,king1 and she will cover herself with glory4 ,out at the front--among the ranchmen1 herdsmen1 miners1 soldiers1 savages--she is at home4 ,this ,southern work1 which has taken the feet of her toilers as near the thorns1 and their heads as near the crown of martyrdom1 as any work of the century1 has shown her splendid qualities4 ,her faith and meekness1 love and heroism1 have won her praises even in the gates of her enemies4 ,and now we ask her to make the whole ,african race the object of her endeavor4 ,this is the mission offered to her2 let her not decline the following items of information in regard to our ,indian treaties1 which may be to many as novel as they are striking3 ,,department ,,of ,,the ,,interior1 ,,office ,,of ,,indian ,,affairs1 ,,washington1 ,april #bh1 #ahgi4 ,,to ,,the ,,honorable ,,the ,,secretary ,,of ,,the ,,interior1 ,washington1 ,d4 ,c4 ,,sir3 ,by reference to the treaties now in force with our nomadic tribes1 it is found that a clause1 in like terms1 in reference to education1 appears in seven 7#g7 of our most important ones1 while manifestly the same spirit of educational help from the ,government pervades them all4 ,one of the clauses referred to is as follows 7see revision of ,indian treaties1 page #acb1 ,treaty with the ,cheyennes and ,arapahoes1 #ahfh73 8,article #g4--;,in order to insure the civilization of the tribes entering into this treaty1 the necessity of education is admitted1 especially by such of them as are or may be settled on said agricultural reservation1 and they thereby pledge themselves to compel their children1 male and female1 between the ages of six and sixteen years1 to attend school2 and it is hereby made the duty of the agent for said ,indians to see that this stipulation is strictly complied with2 and the ,united ,states agrees that for every thirty children between said ages1 who can be induced or compelled to attend school1 a house shall be provided1 and a teacher1 competent to teach the elementary branches of an ,english education1 shall be furnished1 who will reside among said ,indians and faithfully discharge his or her duties as teacher4 8,the provisions of this article to continue not less than twenty years40 ,these treaties were all confirmed in #ahfh1 and1 as will be seen1 the educational clause is respectively limited to twenty years4 ,the intent was unquestionably to gather into schools all of the children of the tribes who became parties to the treaties4 ,by reference to the last annual report from this office1 it will be found that the total population of the tribes having this clause in their treaties1 on the date of that report1 was about #ga1jjj1 and their children of school age numbered #ab1jjj2 and that ten years after making these treaties1 of this great number of children entitled to educational privileges at ,government expense1 only #idd were really provided for4 ,the following extracts from said report have a direct bearing upon this subject1 and merit special attention in this connection3 8,experience shows that ,indian children do not differ from white children of similar social status and surroundings1 in aptitude or capacity for acquiring knowledge2 and opposition or indifference to education on the part of parents decreases yearly2 so the question of ,indian education resolves itself mainly into a question of school facilities4 8,but the figures contained in the tables herewith fall far short of indicating a purpose on the part of the ,government to make this question one of speedy solution4 8,at a low estimate1 the number of ,indian children of school-going age1 exclusive of those belonging to the five civilized tribes of the ,indian ,territory1 may be placed at #cc1jjj4 ,of these1 not less than #h1jjj could1 within a short time1 be gathered into boarding-schools1 except for the fact that the teachers are yet to be employed1 the school buildings are yet to be erected1 and the funds for both1 and for feeding and clothing the scholars1 are yet to be appropriated4 8,the whole number of children who can be accommodated in the boarding-schools now provided at the various agencies is only #b1ehi4 ,to these may be added #e1jhb more1 who can find room in day-schools--those expensive make-shifts for educational appliances among ,indians1--making a total of only #g1fga ,indians who have yet been placed within reach of school facilities4 ,and when it is considered that the fifty youth who spend from one to three years in a boarding-school1 must step from that into the social atmosphere created by #ejj youth and #b1ejj other members of the tribe who are still in ignorance1 it can readily be seen that the elevation of an ,indian tribe is being attempted by a method at least as slow as it is sure2 and that what should be the work of a year will be protracted through a decade1 and the work of a decade through a generation4 8,in many cases this policy is not only short-sighted1 but in direct contravention of treaty stipulations1 as1 for example1 the treaty of #ahfh with the ,kiowas and ,comanches 7heretofore noted74 ,the one boarding-school at the ,kiowa and ,comanche ,agency1 which will accommodate #ge pupils1 is filled1 and the other #dbe children are waiting their turn4 ,to comply with treaty stipulations with these two tribes would more than absorb the entire fund appropriated for the civilization and education of all the ,indians in the ,indian ,territory1 exclusive of the five civilized tribes4 ,even more glaring violations of educational clauses in ,sioux treaties might be cited40 ,the experience of the ,department has been that the best results are obtained by a removal of the children from all tribal influence during the progress of education1 so that educators can command all the time and attention of their pupils4 ,youth so educated return to their tribes as teachers1 interpreters and examples in farming1 etc42 and if properly sustained and guided thereafter1 prove far more effective guides than whites of the same capacity4 ,nothing is more essential than that ,indian youth1 while passing through school1 should have thorough instruction in some practical branch of labor that will meet their needs for obtaining a livelihood after leaving school4 ,very respectfully1 your obedient servant1 ,e4 ,j4 ,,brooks1 ,acting occasion of special interest to all its patrons and friends4 ,the fact that the school was closing a year of prosperous work1 during which a larger attendance than ever had been secured and maintained1 and that evidences were multiplied of increasing confidence and respect on the part of all classes of people in the ,state1 so that opportunities for usefulness were never greater1 while generous gifts had recently come to provide needed facilities for the work1 together with the real merit of the exercises and the large attendance of graduates1 gave all a feeling of satisfaction which did much toward making the week one of great pleasure4 ,the exercises were introduced by a thoughtful and instructive sermon on the ,sabbath1 addressed to the graduating classes by the ,rev4 ,mr4 ,bumstead1 in which he set forth the occasion and motives for a high standard of attainment in life according to 8the pattern shown on the ,mount40 ,three days of examination followed1 which were attended by a board of examiners1 appointed by the ,governor of the ,state1 and by a committee of citizens1 invited by the ,board of ,trustees1 and a large number of patrons and friends4 ,the chairman of the ,board of ,examiners1 a prominent editor of the ,state1 who has attended these exercises in his official capacity for six successive years1 spoke1 in an address to the students at the close1 of his increasing satisfaction with the progress in education exhibited1 and the substantial work done1 with the spirit and management of the institution1 and the zeal and skill of the students in their work1 in different communities4 ,he assured them of the liberality and friendliness of the people1 and pledged the hearty co-operation of the ,state authorities and leading citizens with all their efforts at self-improvement1 and for the elevation of the poor and ignorant so long as the present high standard of doing good was maintained4 ,for all their work in these directions thus far1 he had nothing but praise to give4 ,the ,commencement exercises upon the last day were brief1 sensible and entertaining4 ,five young men were graduated from college and two young women from the normal course1 and degrees were conferred upon six young men who were graduates of three years' standing4 ,the music was a pleasant feature of the occasion1 being well selected and well rendered4 ,a report1 which was highly commendatory1 was read by ,rev4 ,j4 ,m4 ,martin1 ,d4,d41 of ,atlanta1 who had been in attendance upon the examinations by request of the ,board of ,trustees4 ,the gathering of the graduates in their meeting in the afternoon was the most striking feature of the occasion1 as it was their first formal meeting1 and secured the attendance of a large portion of them1 and was marked by the warmest expressions of devotion to the school1 its aims1 discipline and culture1 and affection and gratitude for its instructors4 ,a singularly sober and earnest feeling pervaded their utterances1 and it could plainly be seen that the conflicts of life in the difficult work nearly every one has taken up1 have led them to appreciate as never before the value of work done for them here4 ,a finely framed portrait of ,pres4 ,e4 ,a4 ,ware was presented by them to the school1 as an expression of their appreciation of his sacrifices and devotion to its interests1 as well as a testimonial of personal affection4 ,the next day witnessed the busy scenes connected with the departure of more than #aej young people1 who1 for the most part1 go to teach summer schools of three months' duration throughout the country regions of the ,state4 ,there is something peculiarly interesting in the separation and departure of a large company of young people anywhere1 but a special interest belongs to this occasion4 ,these go with such a simple faith to difficult work among strangers1 with so few facilities and so many obstacles of many kinds2 and yet they seem to win favor1 even from those naturally opposed to their work3 they find places open for them1 gather schools in churches1 log-cabins1 or brush arbors1 make furniture1 black-boards and charts1 give lectures1 lead ,sunday-schools1 ,bible classes and meetings1 teach ministers and elders1 and become 8all things to all men10 that they may save some from the degrading bondage to ignorance1 superstition and sin in which they find the mass of those for whom they labor4 ,it is rare that any are unable to find schools through lack of money to travel and friends to aid them1 but the absence of any efficient system of schools makes the burden heavy1 and brings to a few sad disappointments4 ,but the fact that so many young people1 with no experience and little money and few friends1 accomplish every year such a great work1 seems to prove that the hand of the ,lord guides and protects them1 and that ,his purpose is to make them a leavening power at the base of society in this ,state1 to regenerate and bless and save the whole mass4 ,the religious work of the year has been prospering1 twelve having united with the school church1 and more than as many more1 who were hopefully converted here1 being expected to unite with churches at their homes4 ,all the members of the graduating classes are professing ,christians1 as has been the case with all who have been graduated thus far4 ,the opportunities and possibilities for good were never greater nor the outlook more hopeful2 and we may well set up at the end of the year another stone of witness and say1 8,hitherto hath the ,lord helped us40 ,we append the following statements from the ,editorial correspondence of the ,macon ,telegraph and ,messenger3 ,this institution has been conducted with singular wisdom and propriety1 and has already proved an inestimable blessing to the colored people of ,georgia4 ,gradually1 but surely1 all the prejudices of the whites have been overcome1 and the predictions of many that it would eventuate in a mere nursery of ,radicalism and hate to the superior race1 have not been justified by the facts4 ,on the contrary1 we have the testimony of our own ,school ,superintendent1 ,mr4 ,b4 ,m4 ,zettler1 that some of the most efficient and conservative teachers in the ,bibb ,county schools were educated at the ,atlanta ,university4 ,moreover1 he favors the appointment1 by the various ,boards of ,public ,education1 of teachers of their own race for the colored children of the ,state1 in every instance where they show themselves competent4 ,accordingly1 we find from the official report of ,president ,ware1 that of the fifty-one alumni of the ,university1 forty-two have engaged in teaching as a profession1 while three are pastors of churches1 two theological students1 and one1 ,nathaniel ,d4 ,harris1 of ,washington1 ,d4 ,c41 is pursuing the study of law4 ,of the teachers1 four only have located beyond the limits of the ,state4 ,in addition1 over ninety of the more advanced pupils employ their time during vacation in teaching4 ,the institution is in a more flourishing condition than at any previous period of its history4 ,its matriculates number two hundred and forty1 representing ten different ,states and forty-seven counties in ,georgia4 ,the trustees hold sixty acres of valuable land adjoining the college edifices1 which is in itself a splendid endowment4 ,the other revenues cover #h1jjj per annum from the ,state of ,georgia1 tuition fees 7only #b per month71 and donations usually amounting to #b1ejj from charitable institutions at the ,north4 ,but recently the trustees have had quite a windfall from the ,stone estate at ,malden1 ,mass4 ,the widow of ,mr4 ,stone1 who1 by her husband's will1 was made the almoner of his bounties1 has given #ej1jjj to the ,university4 ,they have fallen heir also to another sum exceeding #aj1jjj1 from the estate of the late ,r4 ,r4 ,graves1 of ,new ,york1 who had previously donated a valuable library to the ,university4 ,with these subsidies it is proposed to erect immediately another ,college building between the two present structures1 to cost #dj1jjj1 and a large addition to the ,girls' ,dormitory1 which will include a dining-room capable of seating #cjj pupils4 ,the estimated cost of this improvement is #ae1jjj4 ,the library of the ,institute comprises #d1jjj volumes1 most of them excellent selections1 with a balance on hand in cash of #gjj for further augmentation1 derived from the interest on the permanent library endowment1 which is #e1jjj4 ,it will be seen from the above that the ,atlanta ,university is on the high-road to prosperity4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,talladega ,,college4 ,the ,college1 ,farm1 and ,theological ,seminary4 ,,rev4 ,,temple ,,cutler4 ,talladega is beautifully situated among the hills of ,alabama4 ,it reminds one somewhat of ,andover1 ,mass41 only the hill on which the college stands is not as high4 ,there is1 however1 the same outline of mountains in the distance1 and the same soft light falling on the village nestling below1 hidden among the rich foliage of trees4 ,talladega is by far the prettiest site for a college that ,i have seen in the ,south4 ,nature has done her part in fitting up the place for purposes of instruction4 ,there is every incentive to mental improvement that nature can afford4 ,if man will do his part1 we may expect to find here one of the most important of those springs which are sending forth streams of moral and mental influence through all the wastes of this south country4 ,a week spent here has been exceedingly enjoyable4 ,the teachers are an agreeable set of finely educated gentlemen and ladies1 who spare no pains to make one's stay a pleasant one4 ,the hospitality is not made burdensome either to host or guest1 but one quietly falls into the routine of life1 and feels immediately at home4 ,there is a farm here of about #ahj acres of land1 most of which is under cultivation1 called the ,winsted ,farm4 ,this is being rapidly reclaimed from the waste of former mismanagement4 ,the difference between ,northern and ,southern agriculturists is1 that the land is improved under the former management1 and wasted under the latter4 ,in ,new ,england it is a sure sign of shiftless husbandry when the land runs out year by year4 ,in the ,south there are but few farms or plantations that are not becoming poorer every year4 ,the effort is begun on this farm to restore fertility1 and in a few years we may expect to see a fine specimen of ,northern enterprise in the products of its hitherto barren acres4 ,the students work the farm in part payment for their education4 ,how far this industrial department is going to succeed financially is a question that must wait for an answer4 ,it is easy to theorize about the advantages of such a measure1 but the surest proof that the pudding is good is found in the eating of it4 ,one thing is certain3 four or five hours a day of work in the hot sun does not fit a young man to bone down to real hard study4 ,it takes a good deal of the remainder of the day to get rested and ready for work4 ,it sounds pretty to talk about a man's catching up his book between works1 and so using up the odds and ends of time1 a la ,elihu ,burritt2 but unfortunately there are not a great many ,elihu ,burritts left1 and ,i am afraid they are not indigenous to this climate1 nor found among boys and girls in these schools4 ,it is a question whether we can afford to run a farm and school together4 ,the drain on both the treasury of the college and the physical powers of the student must be taken into our calculations4 ,the collegiate exercises of the school were creditable to the students and their instructors4 ,the examination exhibited the usual enthusiasm of these students in their studies4 ,the day is past when we need to parade proofs that the negro has a brain capable of improvement4 ,we can now quietly assume that the color of a man's skin does not necessarily affect his mental calibre1 and there we may leave it4 ,i must say1 however1 that ,i have not attended a closer and more satisfactory theological examination in many a day than that of the nine theological students who will graduate from ,talladega next year4 ,i have attended examinations in seminaries and associations and councils1 and been through several such trials myself1 but ,i never was present at one that gave me better satisfaction than this4 ,if all our theological teachers will pass over to us men as thoroughly posted in the fundamental doctrines of the ,bible as these young men appeared to be1 we will gladly put them into the ministry4 ,prof4 ,andrews has solved the question of the practicability of a theological department in this school4 ,we have henceforth no excuse for putting men into the ministry who cannot answer the questions usually propounded to candidates for the sacred office4 ,the public appointments of this week embraced literary exercises by the ,soronian were of a high order1 and compared favorably with similar exercises of the same grade in other schools4 ,the attendance of the citizens from the town through all the public exercises was a very pleasant feature4 ,talladega has made a deep and lasting impression on the white people4 ,they acknowledge the good work that it has done and is doing1 and believe in the possibilities that are before it4 ,last fall1 arrangements were made for an ,industrial ,fair1 which called together some of the best specimens of work done by colored men and women in this ,state and a part of ,georgia4 ,this1 probably1 gave more impetus to the industrial enterprise of the people than anything that has been done since freedom4 ,may the good work go on4 ,that is just what we want to see--the people waking up commodious building1 which accommodates two thousand people4 ,at half-past ten there were thought to be three thousand in and about the tabernacle1 and nearly a thousand horses on the ground4 ,as ,berea embraces but eight hundred inhabitants1 including students and infants1 it appears that more than two thousand came from abroad4 ,but what came they out for to see8 ,an exhibition of an impartial school in the centre of ,kentucky4 ,sixteen students--twelve young men and four young ladies--delivered orations and essays4 ,only three of these were colored4 ,this disproportion is accounted for partly by the fact that the great demand for colored teachers calls colored students away before they reach the higher classes4 ,but it was partly accidental4 ,it has never occurred before1 and probably never will again4 ,the colored students outnumber the white4 ,there were ten graduates--six from the classical department1 three from the scientific1 and one from the normal4 ,two-thirds of the audience were white4 ,a large portion of them were mountain people1 but many were from the blue-grass region4 ,the colored people generally gravitated to one side of the building1 thus keeping up their country customs and gaining the approbation of their white neighbors4 ,this is one of the relics of slavery4 ,generations must die before either white or colored people will feel like treating each other as equals4 ,as master and slave they made no objection to the closest contiguity2 as equals they cannot eat in the same dining-hall1 though forty feet apart4 ,this feeling has that a permanent class of aged persons may be formed4 ,again1 many parents have sent children to school to me1 evidently for no other purpose than to have them cared for2 but now1 some of these same parents express a different purpose1 viz41 to have them prepared for the duties of life4 ,then1 too1 there is a public spirit in favor of a better and higher education1 manifested in the efforts now being made to establish here an ,african ,methodist ,episcopal ,college and a ,methodist ,episcopal ,high ,school4 ,our pupils have been very regular in attendance compared with past years4 ,there have been #aac students in school during the year1 many of whom came from the adjoining counties1 and will go out to take schools for the summer4 ,there has been much earnest study done by these pupils1 who seem determined to surmount the difficulties which present themselves4 ,they have been encouraged to organize a ,temperance society1 which they manage themselves with credit4 ,this organization is doing much in the school and community to encourage those who are striving to be temperate4 ,amid all the flattering results of the year not much could be considered gained were it not for the great revival of religion among the pupils of our school4 ,in ,april1 very many became serious about their souls4 ,they made earnest inquiries after the way of life4 ,the ,lord poured out his spirit in copious showers upon these precious souls1 and nine were happily converted and added to the church4 ,thus we feel that ,god has richly blessed our labors1 and that ,his approving smile rests upon us4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,alabama4 ,corner-,stone of a ,church ,laid--,the ,school ,work4 ,,rev4 ,,wm4 ,h4 ,,ash1 ,,florence4 ,this week has been a blessed one for us4 ,on ,saturday last the corner-stone of the new chapel was laid1 and on ,sunday appropriate services were held4 ,it was an occasion long to be remembered4 ,on the walls1 at the front of the building1 was erected a temporary platform1 and on it a table4 ,in the centre of it was a ,bible and a large vase of beautiful flowers2 back of this were seats for the speakers1 and at the right was seated the choir4 ,the ,rev4 ,m4 ,l4 ,frierson1 of the ,presbyterian ,church1 opened the services by reading the second chapter of ,nehemiah1 and led in prayer4 ,the ,choir then sung 8,what shall the harvest be80 ,the clerk of the was an address by ,hon4 ,w4 ,b4 ,wood1 who said that he was a ,methodist and a sectarian1 too1 but he loved all who loved the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,we are not of the same denomination1 but ,paul said1 ,be ye brethren4 ,he said that the times were better1 that some old fogies would have us believe that we are not as progressive as they were #dj or #ej years ago1 but his experience was1 that we are moving onward1 for he1 as a judge1 did not have as many cases to decide as he had five or six years ago4 ,not that the people were afraid of the punishment of the law1 but controlled by the power of the ,gospel and its morality4 ,he said that he took pleasure in aiding to build churches1 that he had an interest in every church of ,florence1 and that if a subscription book should be carried around and his house passed he would feel slighted2 and he advised all present to aid in behalf of the church4 ,he said that he believed he could speak for the entire white population1 that they1 in sympathy1 would encourage every good work4 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,frierson also spoke4 ,after a collection was taken1 8,ye ,christian heralds1 go proclaim salvation in ,immanuel's name10 was sung by the choir1 and the benediction pronounced4 ,on ,tuesday the examination of the school took place1 and on ,wednesday night the exhibition occurred4 ,we had many visitors during the examination1 and on the night of the exhibition our building1 used for church and school1 was filled to overflowing2 all around the building1 at the windows and doors1 there were many who were eager to see and hear the exercises4 ,it is the first year of school work in connection with the church4 ,at the beginning of the year we had three scholars2 at the end we closed with thirty-five4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,tennessee4 ,teachers' ,institute--,practical ,education4 ,the ,shelby ,county ,teachers' ,institute or ,convention was held in ,june4 ,in regard to it the editor of the ,memphis ,appeal writes3 ,the teachers of the colored schools of the city and county deserve especial commendation for the interest they take in the leading educational questions of the day1 and for the efforts they are making to reach wise and correct conclusions1 and if we may judge of the nature of their entire proceedings and discussions from the paper on practical education presented before the ,institute yesterday1 and printed in another column of this morning's ,appeal1 the ,institute has certainly been a success in point of ability4 ,it is not often that teachers take the initiative in educational reforms1 but we are glad to notice here that a company of teachers speak boldly and plainly in favor of a more practical course of study for the preparatory and common schools of the country4 ,we would call the attention of educators and school boards to this paper1 and urge that some system be devised for our schools1 whereby the simpler of these plans1 at least1 be at once carried into effect with the opening of the schools in ,october4 ,the actions and words of this ,institute have an especial significance1 coming as they do from the teachers of our colored schools1 themselves belonging1 with few exceptions1 to the colored race4 ,they certainly indicate a commendable earnestness in matters pertaining to the educational interests of the country and community1 and they richly merit the encouragement and co-operation of all good citizens40 ,the paper referred to was by ,miss ,laura ,a4 ,parmelee1 of the ,le ,moyne ,school1 and1 after a historical sketch of much value1 ended with the following recommendations3 ,after careful inquiry into the various methods adopted by different schools1 your committee feels justified in recommending3 ,that in every school-house a room be furnished with mechanical appliances1 where1 for an hour each day1 the boys and young men may receive lessons in the art of handling tools and methods of work1 under the direction of a practical workman2 that all girls spend three-quarters of an hour daily in learning to do plain sewing1 to cut garments neatly and economically1 and to judge of the value and appropriate use of fabrics commonly made into clothing2 that the first lessons in free-hand drawing be given to every student1 and classes for further instruction organized for those who display special aptness for the work4 ,one competent teacher could attend to this branch in all the schools1 and still have time to assist in private schools1 if desired4 ,a plan of co-operation in these extra branches would greatly lighten the expense1 while stimulating healthy competition to excel on the part of pupils2 that the older girls study the science of nursing from a regular text-book1 reporting to the teacher for criticism and advice their own experiences in neighborly watchings with the sick4 ,your committee note1 with pleasure1 an awakening interest in this subject1 and would endorse the 8,hand-,book of ,nursing10 arranged and prepared by the ,new ,haven training school for nurses1 as a suitable work to be introduced for this purpose4 ,in connection with the usual study of physiology1 there should be discussions as to proper foods and best methods of their preparation4 ,that in city and country schools1 young children be encouraged to observe the habits of animals and plants2 that no school-house be considered complete without a small microscope1 and at some time in the course of study1 the usual reading books be laid aside for a series of child's books of nature1 treating of the first principles of botany1 philosophy and zoology2 that all methods of teaching bend toward educating the senses to observe quickly and accurately1 the mind to think independently1 and the hands to work dexterously4 ,a cordial letter from the ,hon4 ,w4 ,h4 ,fonte1 ,superintendent of ,schools1 closed with the following words3 ,especially1 ,i may add1 do ,i desire to encourage and forward in every way1 every plan or purpose which has for its object the elevation and progress of the colored race1 believing with ,frederick ,douglass1 that 8without intelligence there is no independence1 without independence no leisure1 without leisure no progress40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,by-,,ways ,,of ,,tennessee4 ,in ,february1 #ahgh1 we printed a letter from our ,bro4 ,cutler1 in which he spoke of a young girl who wanted to get an education1 but who was entirely without means4 ,he procured for her half enough to keep her at study for a year1 started her on her course1 and pronounced her 8the happiest girl in the land40 ,the following description of her first field and work as a teacher will certainly interest those who aided ,tennie ,morford1 and1 we think1 many others4--,,eds43 ,there is situated in the eastern part of ,tennessee a beautiful1 lonely1 little valley1 called the ,sequatchie ,valley4 ,it is sixty miles long and five miles wide1 containing about four hundred inhabitants4 ,this is one of the by-ways of ,tennessee1 or1 as it seems to be1 from the condition of the people1 ,africa at home4 ,it is hedged about with mountains1 and its inhabitants scarcely hear of any other place than their own valley4 ,they are very ignorant1 and their chief occupation is farming4 ,i spent my last vacation among them1 and tried to teach and show them the need of an education4 ,there were persons who were forty and sixty years old who could not count a hundred4 ,scarcely any of them had seen a steam-boat or car4 ,they know only of the wilds of ,sequatchie1 where they have spent their lives4 ,near the head of the valley was my place of work1 principally inhabited by drunkards of both colors1 who spent their ,sabbaths in intoxication and in the use of profanity4 ,their places of enjoyment were three still-houses about half a mile apart1 where the price of their labor was given in liquor4 ,on my arrival at ,pikeville ,i was conducted to a little house on the main street1 where ,i remained one week4 ,i was examined three days after my arrival4 ,my examination seemed very simple1 and ,i received first grade certificate4 ,during that time it was noised abroad that school would open ,monday1 ,june #ajth4 ,bright and early ,monday morning ,i commenced my summer's work2 but as ,i met only twelve bright faces ,i felt somewhat discouraged1 and was beginning to think that ,i would go elsewhere if ,i did not have more next week4 ,to my surprise1 by that time ,i found nineteen1 and felt more reconciled4 ,after ,i had taught a while ,i visited some of the children's parents1 and found that every body wanted to go to school1 both young and old4 ,every one began to show an interest1 and the number of scholars grew to fifty-seven1 a few of whom had been to school before1 while the others were only making a beginning4 ,my most advanced pupil studied only the ,third ,reader and the ,elementary ,speller1 which was considered by him quite an education4 ,the most of them said that they did not want to go any higher than the ,speller4 ,others only wanted to get as far as 8publication40 ,in one case a lady came and brought a little girl to me who did not know the alphabet1 and asked me to get her to 8baker0 as soon as possible1 for she wanted her1 as they say1 to 8help to lay by crop40 ,she said that if she got as far as 8baker0 she would be half through the ,speller1 which she considered half of an education2 but ,i told her that that was only laying the foundation for the great work intended for them to do4 ,they had often heard of schools1 and half realized that they had minds to be cultivated1 but not until last summer had they become interested in the real work of learning4 ,they had a very good school-house for dry weather1 but when it rained we had to shelter ourselves the best we knew how4 ,the house would seat about sixty scholars comfortably1 and was beautifully situated on a small hill called 8,cedar ,bluff10 which was surrounded by large oaks4 ,the people do not have very much preaching1 but when they do have it it must be by daylight1 on account of the white people stoning them at night4 ,the colored people are still living as slaves1 and are afraid to live otherwise4 ,the laborers do not work by the day1 as they do here1 but as they are told4 ,they get up about three or four o'clock in the morning and work until about midnight1 and sometimes later if their employers desire to have the work finished4 ,this is what they consider a day's work4 ,they have the same idea about teaching4 ,they wanted that ,i should teach from sunrise to sundown4 ,they know nothing of the eight or ten hour system of labor4 ,those who live along the highways of trade and culture in our ,state1 that are participating in the active work of the world1 would scarcely believe that some parts of their own ,state are half civilized if they did not occasionally see it2 but one has only to cross the ,cumberland mountain to find his mistake4 ,the ,sequatchie ,valley is only catching a ray of light now and then from the sunrise4 ,when the sun comes up in the east it is first seen by those who live on the mountain tops and those who live in the highest places2 but it keeps rising until it shines on valleys and plains4 ,so with the morning that has dawned upon the people of the ,south2 it is first grasped by those on the highways1 and then it begins to shine into the hidden corners until all shall be lighted4 ,what can be expected of the children of the next generation if their parents are not more than half civilized8 ,we need educated parents1 so that the children may be properly trained4 ,in order to do this we must go into these by-ways of our ,state and sow our seed1 though it be on untilled soil4 ,i think that the time is fast approaching when the public school system1 carried out by earnest teachers1 shall reclaim these valleys1 and make them an honor to the ,state instead of haunts of ignorance and vice4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,africa4 99 99 99 99 our ,chinese helpers bears with great weight on our work4 ,their teacher writes3 8,i think my pupils are very much in earnest1 and study the ,bible with no mere desire of finding out what there is in it1 or of advancing themselves in the knowledge of our language--as some intimate the ,chinese do--but with an earnest purpose to learn ,god's ways and follow ,his commands1 and to fit themselves to teach others the blessed truths which they themselves have come to believe4 ,it seems to me they must make excellent missionaries2 they appear to realize so fully the sad condition of their heathen friends1 and are so simple and unquestioning in their faith in the ,god revealed to them by our ,bible4 ,all their teaching and preaching is the love of ,christ1 and what we should do in return for such love4 ,i am puzzled what to do about the texts passages of ,scripture which ,i give them week by week to prepare outlines of discourses from4 ,w4,c4,p41 for no matter what is the subject of them they are sure to run into the one thing that seems to fill their minds40 ,but that is the one thing needful4 ,the difficulties of which our teacher at ,petaluma writes1 are encountered to a greater or less extent everywhere4 ,she says3 8,no ,chinese ever attend the school except from one company4 ,two of the now famous #8,six ,companies' are represented among the ,chinese of ,petaluma4 ,the rivalries and mutual antipathies of members of these companies are often very intense1 leading sometimes to pitched battles4 ,in ,petaluma they keep the peace2 but no efforts of teachers or helpers have yet succeeded in getting ,chinese of both the companies into one school4 ,w4,c4,p4 ,the scholars are1 also1 house-servants or laundrymen1 and are constantly changing places1 and a great deal of the time have nothing at all to do4 ,if they had work we could keep them4 ,if the times would improve the school would improve4 ,the scholars like the school1 and are much more friendly and cordial to me since ,hong ,sing the ,chinese helper came1 because now ,i am better understood4 ,but while they are constantly shifting about to get employment1 ,i am afraid the good accomplished cannot be very great40 ,this is illustrated by the following from a teacher in the ,oakland ,school3 8,i was hearing a scholar who had been in the school about a week read in his primer4 ,we came to the sentence1 #8,christ died for us1' and ,i asked him #8,who was ,christ8' ,to my astonishment1 he knew nothing of him4 ,in the plainest way possible to me1 ,i gave an account of ,christ's life and death4 ,he seemed interested1 but told me that he had never been at ,sunday-school4 ,the next night ,i noticed him reading with the helper in the ,testament1 and he became regular in his attendance at ,sunday-school4 ,losing his position1 he was obliged to go away to get work4 ,i was very sorry1 for ,i had great hopes that he would soon become a ,christian4 ,this teacher adds3 #8,it is gratifying when you ask one who has seemed somewhat dull1 ,who is ,god8 to see the face brighten and the hand point upwards2 and if you go still further and ask1 ,do you love ,god8 a smile plays upon the features and the reply is1 #8,oh1 yes4' ,a prayer-meeting is held each ,wednesday evening1 in which manifest interest is taken4 ,after the close of the school the pupils often remain and read together the ,scriptures written in ,chinese4 ,each ,friday evening ,i tell them a short story from the ,bible1 and try to take from it some truth which they may remember4 ,i should be deeply grateful could ,i write of more being brought into the kingdom of ,god4 ,the work is encouraging2 and while sometimes we reap the fruits of others' labors1 so others shall reap the fruits of ours40 ,of course the ,gospel leaven working in this mass of heathenism induces more or less of fermentation4 ,our ,christian ,chinese are often engaged in discussions with their heathen friends4 ,i took brief notes of one such1 as afterwards reported to me4 ,i am glad to say that the assailant of the truth in this dispute has since been converted1 and is now a member of my church4 ,the heathen1 who had long been a pupil in ,bethany ,school1 and a close reader of the ,new ,testament1 said to our brother1 8,your ,bible itself says we must not put new wine into old bottles4 ,china is an old bottle2 new wine will burst it40 ,the reply surprised me by its apt and correct interpretation of the text referred to3 8,not so4 ,you cannot put the new wine of ,christ into the old bottles of ,chinese teachings and worship1 it will burst them2 but you can put it into ,chinese hearts and it will save them40 8,but you say10 continued the objector1 8that a little water on the head washes sins away4 ,i wash all over three times a day1 and not take my sins away40 8,not so10 replied ,hong ,sing1 8water cannot take sins away2 but water means that ,god's ,spirit poured upon our hearts1 ,christ's blood sprinkled on our souls1 takes our sins away40 8,but people come to the ,lord's ,supper and then go away1 do wrong1 gamble1 smoke opium40 ,neither admitting nor denying this1 ,hong ,sing told and interpreted with perfect correctness the parable of the net cast into the sea4 ,the last objection was this3 8,you ,christians say that you go to the ,lord's table and drink his blood and eat his flesh4 ,would you eat your mother's flesh and drink her blood1 if she were dead80 ,hong ,sing's reply will be easily surmised by my readers4 ,i wish that ,i could give word for word the broken ,english1 and could reproduce on paper the animation with which this conversation was related to me2 but the limits of my space forbid1 even if otherwise it were possible4 ,the ,story of ,lee ,jin as told by ,jee ,gam4--8,lee ,jin was a young man twenty-three years of age1 a nephew of ,lee ,young4 ,for more than three years previous to his death he had been a member of a ,chinese society of freemasonry1 and also a member of ,lock ,shan ,tong4 ,this latter is a school or society where the doctrines of ,confucius and other ,chinese sages are professedly taught2 but1 in reality1 this society has been formed for no other purpose than to prevent any more ,chinese from becoming ,christians1 and to entrap those who have already become ,christians4 ,during his connection with the above-mentioned society he was one of its most active members1 and one of the strongest opposers of ,christianity4 ,he did not content himself with setting forth his opposition at his own place and outside ,christian institutions1 but often carried it into our ,christian association4 ,his argument was nothing but pride and self-glory4 ,as a ,jew boasted of his father ,abraham1 and felt proud because his race was the chosen people of ,god1 so he himself was lifted up4 ,he said3 #8,the middle kingdom is the true celestial empire4 ,she is the realm of literature4 ,she is the nation of rites4 ,great and powerful are her people1 and especially her ancient personages1 whose great deeds no language is sufficient to describe4' ,he endeavored to display his learning by quoting what he had learned from the books of his sages1 #8,i have heard of men using the doctrines of our great land to change barbarians1 but ,i have never yet heard of any being changed by barbarians1 etc4' ,but when his arguments were overcome he would say1 #8,well1 ,i am a ,chinaman2 ,i have ,confucius2 ,i worship the gods of my own country4 ,if ,jesus is the ,god of the barbarians1 let him be worshiped by them1 and not by ,chinese4' ,so his heart was hardened like that of ,pharaoh1 until1 at last1 he fell sick4 ,during his illness the ,lord1 with ,his wonderful power1 revealed the folly of his pride1 and the consequences of his self-righteousness and evil deeds1 to his then opened eyes4 ,he trembled with fear and said1 #8,oh1 what a great sinner ,i am6 ,what a miserable offender of ,jesus6 ,do send for ,lee ,hain and ,jee ,gam4 ,tell them to come immediately and pray for me4' ,his uncle1 ,lee ,young1 was struck with astonishment when he heard these words1 and saw this great change in his nephew4 ,he said in reply1 #8,do you really want ,jee ,gam and ,lee ,hain to pray for you8' #8,yes1' was the reply4 #8,why not pray to the gods you always worship8' #8,oh1 they are dead idols4 ,they are of no use4 ,they could not save me from the punishment of my sins4' 8,we were sent for accordingly4 ,when we reached there he begged us to forgive him for his opposition against us for preaching the ,gospel of the ,saviour1 whom he had begun to love4 ,we prayed for him1 and asked him to repeat the words after us1 which he did with a tone of true repentance4 ,oftentimes after this he asked his uncle and his younger brother to pray for him4 ,his heathen friends deserted him to the care of these ,christian relatives1 but after his death1 when we had taken charge of the body to give it ,christian burial1 they came and wished to perform some of their heathen rites4 ,we would not permit it2 and1 rather than take back their offerings1 which would bring them bad luck1 they burned them before the door4 ,we accompanied ,lee ,jin to the cemetery1 where we had procured a suitable lot1 and then we sang a hymn and offered a prayer before committing his body to the dust4 ,we believe he is now safe in heaven40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,children',s
