receipt of several communications suggesting that we1 as an ,association1 should do something for the relief of the negro emigrants to ,kansas4 ,we are compelled to say to this1 however1 that #a4 ,we cannot divert funds from our overdrawn treasury from the work to which we are pledged and the responsibilities we have definitely assumed4 #b4 ,our legitimate work is with the ,freedmen in the ,south1 where our schools and churches are1 and where the mass of the people will be for a very long time yet4 #c4 ,that assistance to reach their destination has been given to them from many sources1 and that their greatest need of help for a time will be after reaching ,kansas1 in securing and settling upon lands4 #d4 ,that we cherish the deepest interest in the suffering multitudes who have already left their homes1 and will cheerfully transmit1 for friends who may prefer to send through us1 such moneys as may be designed for this specific object1 and will use our utmost diligence to see that they accomplish the end for which they are set apart4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,money ,,which ,,costs ,,money4 ,it is unfortunate1 perhaps1 that the agents of the beneficence of the churches and ,christian people of the land should be compelled so often to 8rise and explain10 but the necessity will in all probability continue so long as there is a possibility of misunderstanding facts and figures4 ,we are all creatures of association1 and things which are coupled together are apt to make unwarranted impressions on our minds4 ,for instance1 the name of the ,american ,missionary ,association has been of late passing the rounds of the public press in connection with large sums of money4 #aej1jjj to four of its institutions from the ,stone estate2 #bj1jjj for ,fisk ,university from the ,graves legacy2 #bj1jjj from the estate of ,deacon ,james ,smith1 of ,philadelphia2 #ab1jjj announced last month from the ,avery estate1 and which is to be increased to about #ah1jjj2 #ae1jjj from ,mr4 ,arthington1 of ,leeds4 ,all this sounds very rich and prosperous1 and our contributors say3 8,they are rich and increased in goods4 ,for a time1 at least1 they will do well4 ,let us thank ,god for their prosperity1 and turn to those whose wants are more pressing than theirs can be40 ,just here is where the explanation must be made4 ,first1 then1 almost none of these bequests are in our hands as yet4 ,the largest of all is coupled with conditions which we hope to be able to meet1 but of which1 until we shall have met them1 we have no right to be sure4 ,but secondly1 and what is of more consequence1 with one possible exception1 the way in which all this money is to be expended is determined before it reaches our treasury4 ,the donors have examined the field1 or parts of it1 for themselves1 and have given their gifts1 not to us1 but only through us1 to certain definite fields and uses4 ,most of this1 which is for home use1 is to build buildings1 and must go for that purpose4 ,but it will cost us money to see these buildings built2 the oversight1 the correspondence1 and the co-operation of all sorts will be a drain upon our time and treasury2 and when the much needed buildings shall have been erected1 the enlarged work to which they lead will increase very considerably the annual expense for which we must provide4 ,other of these funds are for a new mission field1 of which the founding is only an item1 but the carrying on from year to year will demand larger resources than the past has ever furnished4 ,dear friends1 we recognize the call of ,god in these large gifts to go forward1 trusting in ,him and in ,his people to supply our needs4 ,we do not wait until our work shall be fully provided for before we enter on it2 we do not shrink from the advance which may be needed2 but we do want you all to know that while1 on the one hand1 the equipment and the opportunity for larger work are thrust upon us1 the outfit for the journey is insufficient1 and the officers are embarrassed already to carry on the work in hand4 ,even with special gifts to help the current work1 our receipts are #aj1eie4he less than last year at this time 7,may #abth71 through the falling off in legacies4 ,enlarging work and a shrinking purse--this is our quandary4 ,is our explanation clear8 ,we want money day by day--more money day by day4 ,not millions1 though we could use millions so that they would help on the cause of our ,divine ,redeemer in the world2 but moderate gifts--yes1 mites even1 as they come with prayer and love for ,christ2 but more in number and with greater frequency2 above all1 the steady supply of constantly recurring and increasing needs1 to carry on the work in hand4 ,it costs money to spend money2 that is our most pressing need to-day1 and our new gifts will need more money4 ,will you plan to supply it8 ,or must we say to those who would entrust us with the administration of their beneficence1 8,we cannot afford to administer the trust08 99 99 99 99 99 ,,railroads ,,and ,,rivers4 ,there are railroads and there are rivers4 ,the first are laid out after careful survey of the country1 and follow the most direct lines of communication possible or politic between two given points4 ,they tunnel mountains and bridge gorges2 they cut through hills and level up valleys4 ,they are made4 ,but the rivers--we1 at least1 do not make them2 we only find them1 follow them1 and use them4 ,they do not run exactly in parallels of longitude1 nor flow exactly south or west4 ,they do not take the shortest courses to the sea2 they yield to circumstances1 and gracefully circle round the obstacles which they cannot surmount4 ,somehow1 they always reach their destination1 and leave a path of life and beauty as they go4 ,you may divert them for a little to serve other than their main uses1 but still they flow on unwasted to the larger waters1 into which they pour their steady streams4 ,there are two theories of missionary work1 and especially of the work of missionary societies4 ,one1 which sets out to do one definite thing1 and to reach it by the shortest surveyed and graded road2 another which seeks an end with no less purpose and persistency1 but seeks it with more pliability--does not make the country over to fit its needs4 ,now1 our ,association is not a railroad1 but a river4 ,it was not made by man to serve one fixed and changeless end4 ,it was born of an emergency1 and it has been adapting itself to the changing needs of successive years for the third of a century of its existence4 ,we need not recapitulate its history4 ,its early work was peculiar1 and in part transient4 ,enough that since the war the claims of millions of ,freedmen1 enfranchised but in ignorance1 has seemed its greatest work4 ,it has stretched out a hand more warm than full to the ,chinamen on the ,western coast4 ,it has not forgotten the wrongs or the needs of the poor ,indian4 ,intrusted with a fund for ,african evangelization1 it has sought to exercise that trust with all fidelity4 ,of late the foreign work1 by new offers1 has claimed new attention1 and the possibility of opening a new mission in that field has been considered4 ,a little help was sent through it to the poorest class of sufferers by the scourge of pestilence2 a little aid seeks by it to reach the needy thousands who have just sought asylum in ,kansas2 and some of our old friends1 perhaps1 have come to fear lest we were in peril of being diverted from what they and we consider to be still our great and most important work4 ,we write this to assure such friends that they need not be anxious on this score4 ,there are no such anchors as institutions whose foundations are laid deep in the soil4 ,many men talk with less swelling pride than a few years ago of owning real estate1 when the plain truth is that real estate owns them4 ,so we are held1 if by no other bond1 to the educational and church work among the colored people of the ,south4 ,but far more we are1 and shall be1 kept true to this as our main work by our ever-growing sense of its importance to the race so long oppressed1 and to the interests of ,christian civilization in our land4 ,the river will flow on southward still4 ,it may bend a little to the east or to the west1 as ,providence may determine2 there may be eddies along its banks1 and now and then a dam along the stream to concentrate its power2 it may open1 as does our own ,mississippi1 through more mouths than one into the ,gulf2 but its course for a generation to come is fixed1 not by human resolution1 but by the ,providence which makes the water-sheds and water-courses both4 ,to educate the colored people of the ,south and lift them to the elevation of a worthy ,christian citizenship is our great work4 ,so let the springs among the hills of ,new ,england1 and the streams which water the prairies of the ,west1 not fear to flow in as aforetime1 only with a larger flowing1 and we will pledge them that the work to which they are devoted shall go on till the end be reached4 ,meanwhile1 let us not try to be a railroad1 but a river--one of the rivers of ,god's earth which flow into the sea of ,his great universal love and peace4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we call special attention to the account in ,mr4 ,alexander's letter of the work of grace which accompanied and followed the recent meeting of the ,south-western ,conference1 at ,new ,iberia1 ,la4 ,such records are rarer than they ought to be1 and ecclesiastical bodies are often more careful to be 8not slothful in business0 than 8fervent in spirit40 ,pastor ,butler1 of the church in that place1 writes that already fifty-seven persons have offered themselves for reception to its membership1 and still more are coming4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,congregationalism ,,in ,,the ,,south4 #c4 ,its ,obligations4 ,,dist4 ,,sec4 ,c4 ,l4 ,,woodworth1 ,,boston4 ,it ought to be clear by this time that ,congregationalism is under bonds to do its best to fit the ,freedmen for their new condition and duties4 ,they are freemen and citizens largely through the influence of the ,congregational churches4 ,no small part of the anti-slavery sentiment of the country which gripped the conscience and put into the word 8right0 an almost omnipotent meaning can be traced to the teaching of our pulpits4 ,they were behind no others in preparing the people to carry into their political action what they thought in their hearts and uttered in their closets4 ,but with every gain to freedom in the ,northern mind a new pang was wrung out of the heart of the slave4 ,the laws became more severe1 the punishments more cruel1 the tasks more exacting4 ,the two sections were being driven asunder with a repulsive force which could only end in war4 ,the ,south saw it and threatened2 but the ,northern conscience1 quickened by the principles of religion and of the 8higher law10 would concede nothing4 ,the people said1 8,no more slave ,states2 no more slave territory4 ,if we must have war1 let it come2 but slavery shall not be national40 ,this stern resolution carried a million and a half of men to our battle-fields1 and held them there till the slave was free6 ,it is not claimed that the convictions of equality and right which swayed the ,northern mind were the result of ,congregational teaching alone1 but only that ,congregationalism marched abreast of those moral forces which made the ,north equal to the work and sacrifice to which it was called4 ,the responsibility1 nevertheless1 is the same as if our churches alone had taught the doctrines which brought freedom to the slave4 ,this1 however1 is only the first step in the work they did for the negro4 ,no sooner was he made free than they insisted that he should be invested with all the dignities and rights of citizenship4 ,they urged this upon the ,government when nothing but the direst necessity could justify it in putting the ballot into the hands of a million ignorant voters4 ,the change in the negro's condition was so radical--so above his capacity and education--that the highest moral obligation rested upon those who brought it about1 to see that he was fitted for its duties4 ,this was so clear to the ,southern people that they have said1 with as much force as logic3 8,we were ready to take care of the negro as a slave1 in our way2 but the ,north took him out of our hands by violence1 and now let it take care of him in its way40 ,and why not8 ,especially1 why should not the ,congregational churches1 foremost in arousing the conscience of the ,north against slavery1 and in spurring the ,government to smite the system and enfranchise the slave1 now come to the front and lead him into the better future8 ,but if we had not assumed these obligations by forcing upon the negro the condition and duties of an ,american citizen1 he would lay them upon us by all the wrongs he has suffered at our hands2 by all the gains we have made from his unpaid toil2 by all the aid he rendered us upon the field1 and by his fidelity to us through all the years of the struggle4 ,how he served our living1 nursed our sick1 fought our battles1 watches by the graves of our fallen1 will be the unequaled theme of the future historian4 ,as he alone in the ,south showed us sympathy and offered us aid1 so now he alone is ready to receive learning and religion from the lips of ,northern instructors4 ,and is not this reason enough why our churches should improve the opportunity to fill his mind and heart with those principles which are so fraught with human weal1 and are working so powerfully for the regeneration of the world8 ,for every interest of the ,south as well as of the country at large1 ,congregationalism is summoned to put in its best work for the colored people4 ,only thus can we lay to rest the passions which have reddened the ,south with innocent blood1 and bring to the land the reign of peace and love4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,work ,,stopped1 ,,but ,,the ,,recompense ,,continued4 ,,by ,a ,,disabled ,,teacher4 ,,to ,,the ,,american ,,missionary3 ,dear ,friend3 ,ever since our first acquaintance1 fourteen years ago1 at old 8#fa ,john ,st410 you have never failed to make me your monthly visits1 when we could talk over our work with all its encouragements and discouragements1 giving our own personal experience4 ,that experience has not at all times been very cheering1 but it certainly was inspiring1 for we always separated with more of zeal and determination in our hearts to do our part in the great work which we love so well4 ,during the long months in which ,i wait for health and strength to come back to me1 your coming1 with fresh reports of our work1 is eagerly looked for1 and your visits are often 8times of refreshing0 to me4 ,since you1 in ,january1 spoke of 8the abundant recompense0 which all your workers in the field have1 ,i have been thinking whether those who have fallen from the ranks have any1 and ,i feel sure that we1 too1 have a goodly share of it1 and ,i want to tell you something about mine4 ,in the years when ,i was engaged in the work1 pious souls often assured me that ,i would have my reward in the future1 both of this life and that which is to come4 ,i replied3 8,i get so much reward from day to day as ,i work1 ,i don't see how there can be any left for the future40 ,but ,i was mistaken2 those workers who have been laid aside from active service find that the reward continues after the work is done4 ,it comes to us in various ways--this 8abundant recompense40 ,we often thank the ,master that when health and strength were ours ,he led us into the ,southern field1 and gave us so much to do there that self could not always have our first or best efforts4 ,the consciousness that all the best years of our lives have not been wasted ones is worth a great deal to us1 and as we think of the work1 and plan and pray for it1 even now our souls grow stronger1 braver and truer4 ,there has come into our lives a recompense in the ,christian sympathy and love of noble souls who have toiled with us1 and of those who have helped us over many a hard place with their money1 and stayed our hands with their prayers and words of cheer4 ,i hold in sweet and grateful remembrance many who have opened their purses in response to my importunate and oft-repeated calls1 some of whom have entered upon their eternal reward4 ,up from the ,southland comes many a word to cheer and comfort the heart4 ,from the pen of one who has long labored there comes the precious1 but forgotten promises of the #dast ,psalm4 ,how the heart thrills with thankfulness and gladness1 and1 it may be1 with a little pride1 when a present worker assures us that some of those pupils in whom we are most interested1 and for whom we have long worked and prayed1 are growing in true manhood and womanhood1 fitting themselves to go out into the harvest field to take up the work that has fallen from the tired hands of their teachers4 ,of those pupils who are already teachers many are carrying the light and truth received at school into the gross darkness which hangs over their people4 ,from the rice fields of ,ogeechee1 where two of us began the work and labored from #ahfe-'fg1 comes a good report from one who has since1 and in other places1 been our pupil1 and ,i have your assurance that he and his wife1 also a former pupil of mine1 are doing good work there4 ,in that 8,school of the ,prophets10 the theological department at ,talladega1 are some who manfully struggled through common fractions under my instruction4 ,to them it was a fiery ordeal1 but it proved what manner of stuff was in them1 and when they get out into the conflict of life1 fighting against the powers of darkness1 ,i shall look for victory4 ,one who nearly twelve years ago was taught to read in the old boat-house on that beautiful sea-girt isle1 is moved to preach the ,gospel4 ,he writes me that his greatest desire is to go to ,talladega to prepare for the ministry1 and will do any kind of work to pay his expenses4 ,the hearts of my old aunties send up many a 8,god bless her dear soul60 ,one writes1 8,i have been studying about you a great deal4 ,i have been praying for you1 and if it is ,god's will1 you will get well40 ,another says1 8,tell her ,i pray for her every day40 ,oh1 how rich the prayers of these poor children of the ,king make one feel6 ,all these things which make up our 8abundant recompense0 are riches which cannot 8take to themselves wings10 but are as enduring as the eternal ages4 ,and who can tell what work for ,god has branched off and is now spreading over the ,south1 from the little that we1 the worn-out ones1 have done4 ,n4 ,t4 ,augusta1 ,me41 ,march #ab1 ,the church here 7,plymouth7 is largely an offshoot from the old ,circular1 ,independent1 or ,congregational church1 one of the oldest in this city4 ,in an old plan of the city1 giving the location of the principal buildings in #agjd1 the ,white ,meeting ,house occupies a conspicuous position1 and probably gave its name to the street on which it stood1 which is now the principal street4 ,this churches among the colored people here whose mode of worship is so like ours that the people have been educated into sympathy with our government and worship4 ,notwithstanding all this1 from one cause and another1 ,plymouth church has had a stormy life1 and is now struggling for existence4 ,what will be the outcome of our effort it is not best to predict2 only this3 8,if ,god be for us1 who can be against us80 ,i remember a ,christian worker once made the remark1 that 8,if we have ,god on our side1 we are in the majority1 let who will be on the other40 ,this is the encouragement we have4 ,if we can succeed in getting the membership decidedly and firmly on the ,lord's side1 the end is secured4 ,but the obstacles and hindrances are not few4 ,what we need1 and what alone can save us1 is a baptism of power from on high4 ,some of our good friends at the ,north are in mortal fear of the doctrine of a higher ,christian life4 ,if they will come down here1 we will show them some of the phases of the lower ,christian life1 until they will be willing to accept anything that will tend to make ,christians holy and love one another4 ,i don't propose to say much about the church at organized a ,sunday-school in the out-skirts of the city1 at which she has secured many more promises than attendants4 ,still she is working on1 and will eventually succeed in her enterprise4 ,the ,institute is one of the finest schools in the ,south2 ,i don't know as there is a superior to it anywhere4 ,a gentleman in the city was speaking of the receptivity of the colored children in comparison with the whites1 to the disparagement of the former1 when another gentleman1 prominent in democratic politics1 said there was no disparagement on that side4 8,you just go over to that ,avery school1 and hear the examinations1 and listen to their literary exercises2 why1 it is glorious1 perfectly wonderful--magnificent60 ,this is not undeserved praise4 ,every visitor expresses himself highly pleased with the appearance of the school4 ,prof4 ,farnham deserves the praise which he receives for the high character of his school4 ,after the anniversary exercises1 just before ,easter1 the students and graduates of the school presented ,avery with a beautiful flag of blue bunting with a palmetto in white worked in the centre1 and ,avery ,institute in large letters above and below4 ,it is the first time the flag of the ,state was ever presented to a school supported by ,northern philanthropists for the benefit of the colored people4 ,i would say in regard to social recognition1 that the principal objection to us workers here is1 that we are ,northerners4 ,i do not think any class regards it such a terrible disgrace to do something for the elevation of the negroes4 ,charleston is far in advance of other cities of the ,south in this respect4 ,it is the only city that ,i have seen where a real ,christian conception1 or rather perception1 of duty seems to be felt4 ,the city has built some of its finest school buildings for the colored children2 in one of which there are #be white teachers1 all ,southern born4 ,in another school1 under the care of ,rev4 ,mr4 ,adams1 a colored man1 as principal1 there are three or four white ladies from some of the most respected families in the ,south4 ,several of the colored churches are ministered to by white men4 ,in antebellum days1 ,dr4 ,jeredeaux 7,presbyterian7 had a church of colored people1 where the whites had to take the gallery1 while the blacks held the pews below4 ,the building was one of the largest in the city and used to be thronged4 ,since he left1 his congregation has become a good deal scattered4 ,he had a singular power over his people4 ,he thought as much of his 8niggers0 as he did of his white congregation1 if not more4 ,he would not let any man preach to his colored church4 ,he was pastor of a white church at the same time1 and many of his white congregation would go to hear him at ,zion church1 but they had to take the gallery4 ,i do not mean to say1 by any means1 that every thing is pleasant and sweet between the two races1 but there are things to commend4 ,the things to be condemned1 we hope1 will soon pass away1 and we shall not have to think of some things which we leave unsaid4 ,it is certainly pleasant to labor in a community where you are not constantly reminded that you are despised by ,christian people1 and some of them from the ,north1 too1 because you are doing what your conscience and every sentiment of our holy religion commends4 ,if anything will stir up all the depths of righteous indignation1 and sorely tempt one to go a little over the bounds of the term righteous1 it is to be brought in contact with that phase of ,christianity which prevails almost universally in the ,south2 and the fact that letters are not filled with burning words of scathing criticism of this spirit1 is a standing proof that our workers exercise the largest spirit of charity4 ,and they are right4 ,we are not here to seek the applause of men1 and ,i presume it is altogether better for us and the people among whom we labor1 that the white people do not welcome us to this field4 ,i can easily see the snare that popular favor would be to us4 ,i have long since come to the conclusion that ,god knows best how to have ,his work accomplished4 ,if some misconstrue our motives in coming into this work1 it is no more than the men in ,christ's day did in regard to his motive4 ,it is sufficient if the servant be as his ,lord4 ,oh1 for grace1 grace1 ,some of the replies3 ,by doing it with all our might1 thus showing that it interests us2 by showing that it is a specific work1 placed in the hands of the ,christian church by the marked ,providence of ,god2 by combining the efforts of women1 ,north and ,south1 for special missionary work2 by not only arousing men1 but raising money to carry it on to successful completion4 ,right here came in most appropriately the presentation of 8,the duty of economy and industry10 so as to increase our giving1 by ,rev4 ,d4 ,l4 ,hickok1 ,mobile4 ,full of fresh and vigorous thought1 the most prominent was that of saving to spend4 ,at the announcement1 8,examination of candidates for the ministry10 nine young men came forward4 ,the young men were not only questioned by their leader1 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,andrews1 but by many others on the general range of questions in systematic theology1 followed by personal ,christian experience in their calls to the ministry1 until all present were convinced of their thorough preparation for their work4 ,the evening was given to an address by the ,rev4 ,j4 ,e4 ,roy1 ,d4 ,d43 8,how are the ,freedmen getting on80--a graphic picture of their condition then 7at the surrender7 and now4 ,a little time being left1 8,how to win souls10 by ,rev4 ,o4 ,w4 ,fay1 of ,illinois1 lately arrived1 was impressively treated4 ,first1 make it your business2 then1 in successfully prosecuting this business1 come into personal contact with him you would win4 ,sabbath morning we were disappointed by the absence of ,prof4 ,j4 ,c4 ,silsby1 of ,selma1 who was to have conducted the ,sabbath-school quarterly review4 ,after a short review of the quarter's lessons1 brief addresses were made1 and the time profitably spent4 ,the sermon ,sabbath morning1 by ,mr4 ,j4 ,d4 ,smith1 of ,shelby1 from the text1 8,can ye not watch with me one hour80 was a touching picture of the heavy-laden disciple and a ,saviour's yearning for sympathy4 ,at #c ,p4 ,m4 a children's meeting1 addressed chiefly by ,prof4 ,e4 ,p4 ,lord1 of ,talladega1 was said to be very interesting and instructive4 ,the writer was unable to be present4 ,monday morning a business meeting closed the session of ,conference proper and opened ,,the ,,theological ,,institute4 ,the first paper1 8,the ,history and necessity of a new ,revision of the ,bible10 by ,rev4 ,c4 ,b4 ,curtis1 was a most thorough treatise upon the subject1 for which he expressed himself partly indebted to the ,sunday-,school ,world4 ,we admired the caution with which he handled the sacred subject1 lest some poor wayfaring man should hear to his hurt4 ,at the end we were left to anticipate with joy the new1 complete and pure revision1 which1 after all1 will not contain one single change vital to ,christian faith4 ,the second paper1 8,the ,relation of ,theological ,education to the ,church of ,christ10 was by ,mr4 ,j4 ,d4 ,smith1 of ,shelby1 showing that a pure religion is conserved by an educated ministry2 and without it1 the tendency is to superstition and heathenism4 ,following this1 a study of the #aajth ,psalm1 conducted by ,mr4 ,y4 ,b4 ,sims1 of the theological class1 brought us all under his tutelage and sharp questioning for half an hour4 ,i noticed some of the ,doctors of ,divinity scratching their heads previous to answering1 while 8the smile went round40 ,at night we listened to a sermon on the 8,first ,commandment10 by ,rev4 ,d4 ,l4 ,hickok4 ,power1 pathos and eloquence were combined in it4 ,plans of sermons by ,revs4 ,p4 ,j4 ,mc,entosh1 ,horace ,taylor1 ,alfred ,jones1 and ,revs4 ,andrews and in the afternoon4 ,we could not have foregone the good we gained by that excellent meeting4 ,i have regretted that ,i did not reserve my time for an exclusive report of it1 as it was one of so much interest2 ,i will only note its general features1 however1 as full minutes will be published in connection with the minutes of the ,conference4 ,after the usual devotional exercises and reports1 we listened to an address by ,rev4 ,dr4 ,roy1 which was so thoroughly appreciated1 that a unanimous vote of thanks was given at its close4 ,then came the following papers3 8,the ,opportunities afforded to the ,women of the ,colored ,race for ,education and ,moral ,improvement10 ,miss ,m4 ,j4 ,adams1 ,montgomery2 8,present ,encouragements to further prosecute ,special ,missionary ,work for our ,the ,conference with its triple object closed1 we were ready to enjoy the best wine1 which1 after the example in ,cana1 had been reserved till the last4 ,the interesting ,,examination ,,and ,,ordination ,,services of ,mr4 ,j4 ,d4 ,smith1 ,shelby1 took place on ,wednesday2 examination conducted by ,rev4 ,o4 ,w4 ,fay1 the new pastor at ,montgomery4 ,searching questions were put1 and grew more and more so as the candidate showed abundant ability to answer4 ,an examination of two hours was well sustained4 ,the leading examiner said he had never listened to a better examination1 and had attended all the important ones about ,chicago4 ,one reply ,i must give you1 showing the firm convictions of ,mr4 ,smith on the subject of emotional religion3 ,ques4--,do you think it necessary1 when under conviction1 that a man should be thrown on to the floor and go through various contortions of body before he can become a ,christian8 ,ans4--,no1 sir2 ,i do not think when ,god knocks at the door of a man's heart1 that he 8knocks down the man40 ,this reply evidently met with hearty approval4 ,the ordination exercises were conducted in the evening2 sermon by ,rev4 ,wm4 ,h4 ,ash1 ,florence1 ,,alexander1 ,,new ,,orleans4 ,our ,annual ,conference met at ,new ,iberia1 ,april #b-f1 and on account of the deep interest and spiritual results directly attending it1 marks an important era in the history of the ,congregational churches of ,louisiana4 ,the very delightful meeting of the ,conference in #ahgh1 at the same place1 prepared us for the recurrence of like scenes this year4 ,but the ,lord had greater and better things in store for us1 and the ,conference of #ahgi stands alone in the marvellous tenderness and earnestness which characterized all its sessions1 and in the precious baptism of the ,holy ,spirit1 resulting in the conversion of fifty souls1 and in the quickening and reviving of all the churches represented4 ,of the #af churches connected with the ,conference1 #ad were represented4 ,two large churches1 one at ,gretna1 7,rev4 ,w4 ,p4 ,ward1 pastor17 numbering #bej members1 and the one at ,algiers1 7,rev4 ,james ,craig1 pastor17 numbering #aba members1 which left the ,conference seven years ago1 and have since been independent1 were very cordially re-admitted4 ,the brethren on the ground understand the great importance of this step4 ,the re-admission of these large churches will be an element of strength in many directions4 ,their temporary withdrawal was the result of a misunderstanding which should never have occurred4 ,two new churches were received--the church at ,harangville1 in ,lafourche parish1 with a membership of #cj1 and the church at ,little ,pecan1 in ,iberia parish1 eight miles from the city of ,new ,iberia4 ,rev4 ,p4 ,p4 ,proctor will take charge of this church4 ,the year has been one of growth4 ,revivals were reported in several of the churches1 especially in the ,central ,church of ,new ,orleans and in ,terrebonne4 ,the membership of the churches numbers #a1cjc4 ,during the year ending ,april #ast1 #ahgi1 there have been admitted to the churches #bac1 of whom #aij were received on profession of their faith4 ,number in ,sabbath-school1 #fgj4 ,adult baptisms1 #adf2 infant baptisms1 #abb4 ,our ,northern friends will be startled to know that #aai have been excommunicated during the year4 ,but after all it is a hopeful sign4 ,it is a process of purification painful1 but necessary4 ,the church cannot afford to shelter unworthy people4 ,i wrote to one of the pastors who had sent his report to me1 and asked him if it was true that #cg had been excommunicated from his church the past year4 8,yes1 sir10 he wrote me1 8it is all right2 they were not walking in ,christ40 ,,discussions4 ,the subjects considered were practical and the addresses were earnest and to the point4 ,the topics of 8,church ,extension10 8,education10 8,temperance10 and the 8,moral ,character of ,ministers and ,church ,members10 came prominently before the ,conference4 ,the sentiments expressed1 in which there was entire agreement among the brethren1 were pure in tone1 and placed our churches upon the broad platform of moral purity and intelligence4 ,i shall be pardoned if ,i particularize4 ,social and domestic relations among the colored people in the dark days of slavery1 in a great many instances1 do not bear inspection4 ,the necessities of those days call for a charitable judgment1 but do not justify a continuance of the evil4 ,there is but one sentiment in the ,congregational churches of ,louisiana on this subject3 legal marriage is insisted on in all cases4 ,no exception is allowed on any plea4 ,said one of our pastors while this discussion was pending1 8,individuals living unlawfully can remain members of my church only so long as it takes to call a church meeting to turn them out40 ,the pastors agreed that they could afford to preside over small churches1 but not over impure churches4 ,i desire to emphasize this fact1 that our friends may know that we are building upon a good foundation1 and that our work1 whatever the rate of its progress1 is in accord with the ,gospel of ,christ4 ,the discussion on the topic of 8,education0 called forth the deep convictions of the brethren that the churches need and must have educated pastors1 and that the colored people must demand the highest benefits of education that can be obtained4 ,the first eager1 enthusiastic desire for education which followed in the wake of emancipation has been succeeded by a calm1 intelligent1 determined conviction that the future of the race in ,america depends upon the thorough education of the people4 ,,church ,,extension4 ,a question which occupied the serious attention of the brethren was the extension of our work in the ,state1--how may our churches be strengthened and their usefulness extended1 and how may new fields be occupied and cultivated8 ,it was represented to the ,conference that several churches occupying virtually an independent position were prepared to join our ranks1 and that 8all things were ready0 to organize churches in many communities where the people were in sympathy with our spirit and polity4 ,to meet this demand1 and to gather a harvest already ripe1 the ,conference decided1 and ,i think wisely1 to appoint from their own number four missionaries1 who should go through the ,southern parishes to preach the ,word1 to instruct and encourage the people1 and1 wherever the opportunity offered1 organize believers into churches1 and minister to them till stated preaching and pastoral care could be provided4 ,the brethren appointed were ,rev4 ,w4 ,p4 ,ward1 of ,gretna1 ,rev4 ,james ,craig1 of ,algiers1 ,rev4 ,homer ,jones1 of ,lake ,peigneur1 and ,rev4 ,samuel ,smith1 of ,terrebonne4 ,i have great confidence that these brethren will bring good tidings to the ,conference in #ahhj4 ,,ordination4 ,the church at ,terrebonne asked that ,samuel ,smith1 who had for several years exercised his gifts as a preacher1 and who was known to the brethren as a thoroughly good man1 be ordained to the ,gospel ministry4 ,the church at ,lafourche ,crossing presented the name of ,william ,reed1 who had supplied their pulpit for one year2 and ,thomas ,e4 ,hillson1 of ,new ,orleans1 who was licensed two years ago1 applied in his own name for ordination4 ,the examination of the candidates was faithful and searching1 and was well sustained4 ,it was unanimously approved1 and the public services of ordination took place on ,saturday night1 in the presence of a very large and deeply interested audience4 ,,the ,,baptism ,,of ,,the ,,holy ,,spirit4 ,i have reserved till now the narrative of one of the most wonderful and precious revivals it has been my privilege to witness4 ,occurring in connection with the sessions of the ,conference1 it seemed like the ,divine benediction upon our work4 ,the pastor1 ,rev4 ,wm4 ,butler1 said to me on my arrival1 8,we want revival services every night4 ,i have announced them1 and the people expect them40 ,no special services had been held1 and no conversions had occurred2 but the people were anticipating the ,conference with great expectations of good4 ,the first night the church was filled4 ,as ,moderator ,i preached the annual sermon to an attentive and tender audience4 ,at the conclusion of my sermon the pastor said to me1 8,call out the mourners40 ,i said1 8,no2 wait until to-morrow night40 ,in my heart ,i did not expect a revival to begin the first night4 ,the early morning prayer meeting was a rich spiritual feast2 the discussions during the day were marked by perfect harmony4 ,at night the church was packed4 ,the spirit of ,god was manifestly present4 ,mr4 ,hall and ,mr4 ,ward preached effectively4 ,those desiring to become ,christians were invited forward to the 8mourner's seat40 ,thirteen responded4 ,the good work had begun1 and we had only to 8wait and see the salvation of ,god40 ,an inquiry meeting was held in connection with the morning prayer meeting4 ,those who came proved by their words and manner how deeply ,god had convicted them of sin1 and their need of a ,saviour4 ,night came again1 and with it an eager1 crowded assembly4 ,mr4 ,james preached earnestly1 and the number of inquirers was increased to twenty4 ,the next night1 ,saturday1 was to be the last of our ,conference1 and my anxiety was almost painful4 ,i was appointed to preach the ordination sermon for the three brethren to be set apart to the ministry1 and in my selection and treatment of a subject ,i had but one desire and thought--to deepen the impression already made1 and to persuade sinners to make their peace with ,god4 ,i said to the brethren1 8,we will change the usual order of services1 and the sermon will come last to-night40 ,god helped me to preach4 ,i felt that ,his word went home to many hearts4 ,the church could not nearly contain the throngs who came4 ,the door-ways were crowded1 and numbers stood beneath all the windows4 ,the appeal to rise and come to ,jesus was responded to by #dj1 half of whom were men4 ,none could doubt the presence and power of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,the tidal wave was moving on1 but had not yet reached its height4 ,on ,sunday morning ,i took a #e o'clock breakfast and started for two distant churches1 the one #ae miles away and the other #be miles distant from ,new ,iberia1 leaving ,st4 ,paul's church in the care of the pastors who had remained over the ,conference4 ,as ,i was passing the house of one of the brethren ,i was called in to see the most prominent man in the community among the colored people1 formerly ,state senator1 who was under the deepest and most agonizing conviction of sin4 ,he had risen from his bed two hours before the break of day1 and had come to this house to beg the brethren to pray for him4 ,the household were aroused1 a prayer circle was formed around him1 and they interceded for him with heartfelt earnestness4 ,when ,i went in he was pacing the room1 his tears were flowing like summer rain1 and cries of agony broke from his lips4 8,what does this mean1 ,mr4 ,alexander80 he said to me4 ,i replied1 8,it means1 my dear friend1 that ,god is speaking to you1 and entreating you to repent and believe on the ,lord ,jesus ,christ40 ,we knelt together4 ,i prayed for him2 and he then and there offered up to ,god the prayer of a contrite1 heart-broken man4 ,i shall always remember one or two expressions in that prayer4 8,o ,god6 ,thou hast always been kind and good to me4 ,thou hast crowned my life with blessings1 and ,i have been ,thine enemy4 ,o ,god6 spare me and save me4 ,my poor little babes who are in heaven1 go to ,jesus and ask ,him to forgive me4 ,all ,christians in heaven1 go to the ,saviour and intercede for me40 ,i was obliged to leave him to meet my appointments4 ,i returned on ,monday4 ,the pastor and people met me and said1 8,you cannot go to ,new ,orleans to-day2 you must preach to-night40 ,i gladly consented4 ,never did ,i feel myself so completely in ,god's hands4 ,it was an unspeakable joy to preach the precious ,gospel that night4 ,i again appealed to all who felt their need of forgiveness to come forward and begin a ,christian life4 ,as though moved by one impulse1 ,,sixty at once came forward and fell upon their knees4 ,i saw before me #cj men from #ah to #gj years of age1 and as many women4 ,with prayer and song and exhortation the meeting continued till nearly midnight4 ,we could not close it a moment sooner4 ,eight or ten found peace in believing in ,jesus on their knees that night4 ,i was compelled to return to ,new ,orleans on ,tuesday4 ,it was ,god's work1 and ,he carried it forward gloriously4 ,about #ej have already joined the church1 including the man of whom ,i have particularly spoken4 ,his confession of ,christ in the church was manly and thrilling4 ,i am in almost daily receipt of letters from the young converts4 ,their joy is deep1 peaceful and intelligent4 ,i feel how inadequately ,i have described this wonderful work of grace4 ,i have left much for our friends to infer2 but even then they can hardly conceive the warmth1 the depth and the glory of this work of ,god4 ,i am profoundly grateful for the ,conference of #ahgi1 and desire to say to our friends that the 8signs of promise0 for our small band of ,congregational churches in ,louisiana were never so bright as to-day4 ,let those who have ever been the friends of the colored people take fresh heart and courage1 and push forward the work1 till brighter1 richer1 grander results are attained4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians4 ,,the ,,spice ,,of ,,missionary ,,life4 ,rev4 ,myron ,eells1 ,s',kokomish1 ,w4 ,t4 ,this frontier life among the ,indians has its romance1 some things being pleasant and some not so pleasant4 ,the white people in the region where ,i travel are generally as kind as they can be2 the ,indians seldom do a favor without wishing pay for it1 though that is not always so2 but the elements are sometimes antagonistic4 ,at one time ,i was returning from ,seabeck in a canoe1 thirty miles distant1 after preaching1 with two ,indians4 ,we live three miles above the mouth of the ,s'kokomish ,river1 but everywhere around its mouth are mud flats1 which are very troublesome at low tide4 ,at nine o'clock at night we reached the mouth of the river1 with the tide low and still running out4 ,the ,indians thought that they could find the channel1 but in the darkness they made a mistake and ran on to the flats1 where we remained until the tide turned4 ,it was chilly1 as a ,november night generally is4 ,we had an overcoat and pair of blankets which kept us somewhat comfortable1 but it was four o'clock in the morning before we reached home4 ,again1 ,i started with eight canoes from ,port ,gamble for ,seabeck1 twenty miles1 but a strong head wind arose4 ,the ,indians worked hard for five hours1 when nearly all gave out1 having traveled only ten miles1 and we camped on the beach4 ,it rained also1 and the wind blew stronger1 so that the trees were constantly falling around us4 ,i had only a pair of blankets1 an overcoat and a mat with me1 but having obtained another mat of the ,indians1 ,i made a slight roof over me with it1 and went to sleep4 ,about two o'clock in the morning ,i was aroused by the ,indians1 when ,i learned that a very high tide had come and drowned them out4 ,my bed was on higher ground than theirs1 but in fifteen minutes that ground was three or four inches under water4 ,we waded around1 put our things in the canoes1 and soon1 wet and cold1 in the middle of ,february1 we started4 ,there was still some rain and wind1 and rowing by turns in order to keep from suffering1 it took us four hours to reach our destination4 ,i started from ,dunginess for ,elkwa1 a distance of twenty-five miles1 on horseback1 but after proceeding ten miles the horse became so lame that he could go no farther4 ,i could not well get another one1 so ,i was obliged to travel on foot2 but soon ,i reached ,morse ,creek1 and could find no way of crossing4 ,the stream was quite swift1 having been swollen by recent rains4 ,the best way seemed to be to ford it2 so after taking off some of my clothes1 ,i started in4 ,it was only about three feet deep1 but so swift that it was difficult to stand1 and cold as ,december2 but with a stick to feel my way1 ,i crossed1 and it only remained for me to get warm1 which ,i soon did by climbing a high hill4 ,coming from ,elkwa on a previous trip1 on horseback1 with a friend1 we were obliged to travel on the beach for eight miles1 as there was no other road4 ,the tide was quite high1 the wind was blowing and the waves came in very roughly4 ,there were many trees lying on the beach1 around which we were obliged to canter as fast as we could when the waves were out4 ,but one time my friend who was ahead just passed safely1 while ,i was caught by the wave1 which came up to my side1 and a part of which went over my head4 ,it was very fortunate that my horse was not carried off his feet4 ,another of our experiences1 which is very unpleasant1 is with the vermin1 especially the fleas1 which dwell constantly with the ,indians and with some of the whites4 ,i stood one evening and preached in one of their houses1 when ,i am satisfied that ,i scratched every half minute during the service2 for1 although ,i stood them as long as ,i could1 ,i could not help it4 ,i would quietly take up one foot and rub it against the other leg2 put my hand in my pocket or behind my back1 and treat the creatures as gently as ,i could1 and the like4 ,once in a while ,i am obliged to stay over night in one of their houses in the winter1 a thing ,i seldom do unless there is no white man's house near2 even in summer they are afraid the panthers will eat me up if ,i sleep outside2 but between the fleas1 rats and smoke 7for they often keep the house full of smoke all night71 sleep is not very refreshing1 and the next morning ,i feel more like a piece of bacon than a minister4 ,but ,indian houses are not the only unpleasant ones4 ,here we are at a hotel1 the best in a milling town of four or five hundred people2 but the bar-room is filled with tobacco smoke almost as thick as the smoke from the fires which often fills an ,indian house4 ,here about fifty men spend a great portion of the night 7some of them all night7 in drinking1 gambling and smoking4 ,the house is used to it1 for the rooms directly over the bar-room are saturated with the smoke1 and ,i am assigned to one of these rooms4 ,before ,i get to sleep the smoke has so filled my nostrils that ,i cannot breathe through them1 and at midnight ,i wake up with a headache so severe that ,i can scarcely hold up my head for the next twenty-four hours4 ,it is not so bad1 however1 but that ,i can do a little thinking on this wise3 ,who are the lowest1 the ,indians or these whites8 ,the smoke in each of their houses is of about equal thickness2 that of the ,indians1 however1 is clean smoke from wood2 that of the whites filthy from tobacco4 ,the ,indian has sense enough to make holes in the roof where some of it may escape2 the white man does not even that much4 ,the ,indian sits or lies on or near the ground1 beneath a great portion of it2 the white man puts a portion of his guests and his ladies' parlor in rooms directly over it4 ,sleeping in the ,indian smoke1 ,i come out well1 though feeling like smoked bacon1 and a thorough wash cures it2 but sleeping in the white man's smoke ,i come out sick1 and the brain has to be washed4 ,but these are the sharp spice4 ,there is another side1 more like currant jelly4 ,the people are generally as kind as they can be4 8,we will give you the best we have10 is what is often told me1 and they do it4 ,here are houses1 where ,i occasionally stop a week at a time1 and the people will take nothing for it4 ,here is a region for forty miles1 where a man's company is supposed to pay for his lodgings at any house4 ,now ,i meet a man who offers to go home1 half a mile1 on purpose to get me a dinner2 or a girl1 with whose family ,i am very slightly acquainted1 stands on the porch as ,i pass and says1 8,mister1 have you been to dinner8 ,you had better stop and have some40 ,here is a hotel-keeper1 who has sold whiskey for fifteen years1 who puts me in his best room1 one fitted up for private use1 and will take nothing for it4 ,now ,i am invited into the home of the superintendent of a large mill1 and during the two years and a half that ,i have occasionally preached at the place ,i have spent seven weeks in his family1 yet he will never take anything for it1 and hardly allow me to thank him4 ,again1 here is a steamer1 which has always carried me free whenever myself or family wished to travel on it1 and which during two years and a half has actually given me sixty or seventy-five dollars' worth of travel4 ,then there is another which runs irregularly1 but whose captain says1 8,whenever you or your family or your ,indian and canoe wish to travel where ,i am going1 ,i will take you all free10 and who has actually made extra effort with his steamer in order to help me4 ,indians1 too1 are not wholly devoid of gratitude4 ,now it is a funeral4 ,they are often accustomed to make presents at such times to their friends who attend4 8,take this money10 they say to me1 as they give me two or three dollars2 8do not refuse2 it is our custom1 for you come to comfort us with ,christ's words40 ,again1 ,i am at a great festival1 and am there on purpose to protect them from drunkenness and other evils equally bad2 so they hand me seven dollars and a half1 saying1 8,you have come a long distance to help us2 we cannot give you food as we do these ,indians1 as you do not eat with us10 7and generally ,i do not1 if ,i can avoid it72 8take this money1 it will help to pay your board40 ,or1 again1 they carry me nearly a hundred miles free1 in order that ,i may teach them and dedicate a church for them4 ,god is good to put these kind thoughts into the hearts of the people1 and not the least good thing ,he has put in the ,bible is that verse about the giving of a cup of cold water4 ,,the ,,chinese4 8,,california ,,chinese ,,mission40 ,auxiliary to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 8,,congregational ,,way0 ,,in ,,mission ,,work4 ,,rev4 ,,wm4 ,c4 ,,pond1 ,,san ,,francisco4 ,there are two methods of dealing with converts from heathenism1 whether in our own land or that from which they come4 ,one is that which treats them as children to be provided for and controlled2 the other is that which welcomes them at once as co-workers--as brethren1 having only one ,master1 and that our ,master1 even ,christ4 ,according to the one1 the missionary lays the plans1 and the converts work by it1 if at all2 to consult them would puff them up and make them presumptuous4 ,according to the other1--while1 of course1 those who are responsible for the use of funds must control in regard to expenditures1 and1 consequently1 must retain a veto power as to almost all projects for concerted work1--still suggestions from the brethren are cordially welcomed and carefully considered1 and they are encouraged to work for ,christ1 with earnest prayer for ,his guidance1 each in the way ,christ points out specially to him4 ,the one is apt to say1 8,do as you see us do1 accepting our standard and walking by our rules20 the other inculcates principles--faith1 hope1 charity1 and believes that with these in the heart the young disciple may become a law unto himself4 ,i scarcely need say which of these two is the 8,congregational way40 ,there are various objections made to this way2 one1 and the chief1 is that it is not adapted to these undeveloped ,christians--babes in ,christ4 ,they are but children1 and must be treated as such4 ,it is urged on foreign missionary fields with greater show of reason possibly1 but it is the same objection which for so many years hindered the planting of ,congregational churches in our new settlements at the ,west4 ,we were told that ,congregationalism was good for ,new ,england1 but not stout enough for the rough-and-tumble1 heterogeneous communities in the younger ,states4 ,it is the same which is now urged against ,congregationalism in the ,south4 ,the negro race1 we are assured1 is too emotional1 too ignorant1 too easily carried away by every wind of doctrine or of feeling1 to be entrusted with self-government4 ,if you work upon this scheme among converts from heathenism1 it is certain that you will find trouble4 ,if you work upon the other1 you will find trouble also4 ,no good work in this evil world ever went forward without trouble4 ,but this 8,congregational way10 it is supposed by some1 opens the door specially wide to all sorts of dissatisfaction and dissension4 ,false brethren1 unawares brought in1 will scatter seeds of heresy and lead off into all sorts of back-slidings4 ,time will be wasted in disputes that had better be given to study and prayer4 ,ill-considered and impossible projects will be pressed upon you1 and you will find the exercise of your veto power involving you in ungracious1 even hostile1 criticism4 ,thus your influence will be weakened1 and your usefulness impaired4 ,these objections are plausible1 and address themselves to principles in human nature which the new birth1 and even a missionary's consecration1 do not at once supplant4 ,if we are not mistaken1 they have gone far to determine the method in much of the missionary work of the world4 ,but if we have read the ,new ,testament correctly1 the method against which these objections may be urged1 is the one under which the first ,christian missions were conducted--the one to which the teachings of the ,master point1 and which the example of his ,apostles has endorsed4 ,and the heathen among whom these primitive missions were conducted were just such as we find in the world to-day1 only1 if possible1 more corrupt--a less promising material for a self-governing church4 ,it is certain1 furthermore1 that those primitive churches1 organized on this scheme of ,christian liberty1 did get into difficulties--into just such difficulties as these objections suggest4 ,the epistles give mournful evidence of this4 ,the hearts of the ,apostles were often heavy on account of it4 ,and yet no other scheme was substituted for it until long after the ,apostles' day1 and liberty1 with all its dangers and all its inconveniences1 was preferred to any yoke of bondage1 however well contrived4 ,i believe that the ,apostles were right in this1 and that we do well to follow in their steps4 ,it may be that we shall have trouble which1 under a less democratic rgime1 we might have escaped2 but these troubles1 if the hearts that are exercised by them are really renewed1 may be made means of grace2 while1 if there be lurking hypocrisy1 it will be1 by the same means1 brought to light4 ,and1 then1 the smothered discontent under a system of churchly government in distinction from ,christian fellowship1 may be more poisonous than even open disputes can be4 ,encourage the free and frank expression of what lies troublesome within2 thus often a few words of explanation remove the cause of friction1 or1 possibly1 the very effort to express one's discontent reveals its futility and unreason4 ,furthermore1 let me add1 out of oft-repeated experiences1 the suggestions of these brethren who have come out of the depths of heathenism1 and know it as no words could possibly portray it1 are often very wise4 ,the superintendent of mission work1 no matter how well schooled he be in the language and literature1 the history1 philosophy and laws of the people for whom he labors1 can never know their heathenism as they know it themselves4 ,a system which invites such suggestions1 which encourages the idea that the work is not mine only1 but theirs also1 which thus nurtures frankness and freedom of utterance1 has advantages which no system of constraint and repression can possibly secure4 ,and1 then1 it is only under conditions of liberty that the educating process can go on to best advantage4 ,men learn to swim1 not by hearing lectures on the art1 but by swimming2 and men are educated up to manhood in ,christ1 to self-denial and self-control1 only as they have it thrown upon them to control themselves4 ,men learn their weak points by being put to the test2 and the weak are strengthened best by well-timed1 well-measured exercise4 ,and ,christ has organized ,his churches with reference to this2 not for the smoothest possible working of ,gospel machinery1 but for the highest possible attainment in faith and hope and love by each individual soul4 ,i venture to throw out these hints as indicating the principle on which our ,chinese mission is conducted2 and now ,i wish to testify1 after so many years1 that if it were possible to begin again1 we could choose no other one than that1 the underlying principle of the 8,congregational way40 ,,golden ,,wedding
