land1 its wants and woes1 and its brilliant possibilities1 as ,sir ,samuel ,baker4 ,and he1 too1 in his 8,ismailia10 traverses largely the territory suggested for our occupation by ,mr4 ,arthington4 ,the following paragraphs are from his description of the natural scenery1 and of the beauty and fertility of the land on the east side of the ,nile above and below ,fatiko4 ,is this not a pleasing picture of a portion of our proposed field8 8,i reveled in this lovely country4 ,the fine park-like trees were clumped in dark-green masses here and there4 ,the tall dolape-palms 7,borassus ,ethiopicus7 were scattered about the plain1 sometimes singly1 at others growing in considerable numbers4 ,high and bold rocks1 near and distant mountains1 the richest plain imaginable in the foreground1 with the clear ,un-y-,am flowing now in a shallow stream between its lofty banks1 and the grand old ,nile upon our right1 all combined to form a landscape that produced a paradise4 ,the air was delightful4 ,there was an elasticity of spirit1 the result of a pure atmosphere1 that made one feel happy in spite of many anxieties4 ,my legs felt like steel as we strode along before the horses1 with rifle on shoulder1 into the magnificent valley1 in which the mountains we had descended seemed to have taken root4 ,the country was full of game4 ,antelopes in great numbers1 and in some variety1 started from their repose in this beautiful wilderness1 and having for a few moments regarded the strange sights of horses1 and soldiers in scarlet uniform1 they first trotted and then cantered far away4 ,the graceful leucotis stood in herds upon the river's bank1 and was the last to retreat4 99 99 99 99 99 ,magnificent trees 7acacias71 whose thick1 dark foliage drooped near the ground1 were grouped in clumps1 springing from the crevices between huge blocks of granite4 ,brooks of the purest water rippled over the time-worn channels1 cut through granite plateaux1 and as we halted to drink at the tempting stream1 the water tasted as cold as though from a ,european spring4 ,the entire country on our left was a succession of the most beautiful rocky undulations and deep1 verdant glades1 at the bottom of which flowed perennial streams4 ,the banks of these rivulets were richly clothed with ornamental timber1 the rich foliage contrasting strongly with the dark gray blocks of granite1 resembling the ruins of ancient towers40 ,but this land1 so rich and beautiful1 is all going to waste4 ,its game and cattle are doomed to as swift destruction as the countless herds of buffalo and antelope which only fifteen years ago thronged the prairies of ,dakota4 ,we copy from the same source this picture of the waste which is the sure precursor of want4 8,by the ,nile traders' arrangements the companies of ,abou ,saood receive as their perquisite one-third of all the cattle that may be stolen in successful razzias4 ,the consumption of cattle by these brigands is enormous4 ,all flour is purchased in exchange for flesh1 while flesh is also necessary for food3 thus the cow is being eaten at both ends4 ,the frightful drain upon the country may be imagined by the following calculation1 which is certainly below the truth3 8,if #a1jjj loads of ivory must be carried to ,ismailia1 #b1jjj cows are required as payment of carriers2 #a1jjj belong to the brigands as their perquisite2 #cjj are necessary to feed the native carriers and soldiers during the journey2 ---------- #c1cjj cows are required to deliver #a1jjj loads of ivory a distance of #afe miles from ,fatiko to ,ismailia 7,gondokoro74 ,a station of #ce men consumes daily #gjj lbs4 ,in addition they require to exchange for flour #cej lbs4 -------------------- ,daily consumption of flesh #a1jej lbs4 ,the oxen of the country do not average more than #agj lbs4 cleaned4 #b1bee beasts are thus required annually4 ---------- #e1eee oxen are necessary to feed and pay for the transport from a station only #cej strong1 according to the customs of ,white ,nile brigandage4 8,it must be remembered that at least a thousand1 and sometimes double that number of slaves1 are prisoners in each station4 ,all these must be fed4 ,the same principle is adopted in the exchange of flesh for flour2 thus the expenditure of cattle is frightful4 ,not only oxen1 but all the breeding cows and young calves are killed without the slightest reflection4 ,no country can support such wilful waste2 thus1 after many years of ravage1 this beautiful country has become almost barren of cattle4 ,the central districts1 occupied by the slave-traders1 having been denuded of cattle1 it has become necessary to make journeys to distant countries40 ,but this is not the worst aspect of affairs4 ,for by how much a man is better than a beast1 by so much his life is more sacred1 and to be guarded with more jealous care4 ,read this story of a slave raid1 its treachery1 its brutality1 its capture not only of slaves1 but its slaughter of many times the number led away to sale4 ,but this is not all2 for in the pages of 8,ismailia0 follows the record of a dreadful retribution in which the whole #ajc of ,abou ,saood's men are put to death and #aej of their allies4 ,this is but one of many like scenes which have helped to make the slave regions of ,africa as degraded as they are found to-day4 8,a man named ,ali ,hussein was a well known employ of ,abou ,saood4 ,this ruffian was an ,arab4 ,he was a tall1 wiry fellow1 with a determined but brutal cast of countenance1 who was celebrated as a scoundrel among scoundrels4 ,even his fellows dreaded his brutality4 ,there was no crime that he had not committed1 and as his only virtue was extreme daring1 his reputation was terrible among the native population4 ,he had arranged to make a descent upon the ,umiro tribe1 about six days' march to the southeast4 ,he accordingly sent natives as spies with specious messages to the ,umiro1 announcing his intention of visiting them to purchase ivory4 ,with a party increased by volunteers from other stations to a force of about #cjj men1 he arrived at ,umiro4 ,the simple natives received him gladly and showed extreme hospitality4 ,the country was thickly populated and abounded with vast herds of the finest cattle4 ,after a week's sojourn among the ,umiro1 during which he had received large presents of elephants' tusks and seventy head of oxen from the confiding natives1 the treacherous ruffian gave an order to his brigands at sunset4 ,they were to be under arms an hour before daybreak on the following morning1 to set fire to the adjacent villages of their generous hosts and to capture their large herds of cattle1 together with their women and children4 8,at the time appointed1 while every ,umiro slept1 unconscious of approaching danger1 several villages were surrounded1 and volleys of musketry were poured upon the sleeping inmates4 ,the straw huts were ignited1 and the flames rapidly spread1 while a massacre commenced similar to the butcheries to which the slave-hunters were so well accustomed4 ,the ,umiro1 thus taken by surprise1 and appalled by so dastardly a treachery1 were easily defeated4 ,their children and wives were captured1 together with large herds of cattle1 which are celebrated for their size4 ,all these were driven in triumph to ,fatiko40 ,we only ask1 in conclusion1 is not this a field for ,christian men to occupy--this fair land1 with such means of supporting life1 and with horrors like these enacted year by year1 against which the presence of even a few white ,christian men would be a most effectual check8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,war ,,or ,,missions8 ,christian ,england is at war with the ,zulus1 not altogether successfully1 we fear not altogether ,zululand is1 by arbitration mutually agreed upon1 decided to belong of right to the ,zulus4 ,but the ,dutch ,boers who had settled therein decline to give up their claims4 ,the ,english ,government1 to whom that territory had been transferred1 defend them in maintaining their resistance to what had been declared to be the rightful owner1 and because ,king ,cetywayo is a small sovereign1 the ,queen on whose dominions the sun never sets proposes to compel him4 ,this is about the story as it comes to us4 ,so ,christian ,england and ,america--not the ,christianity in ,england and ,america--treat their poor neighbors4 ,now1 in the prosecution of this ,zulu war thousands of men are sent out to do battle--generals1 captains1 common soldiers4 ,money is freely spent1 millions of dollars1 to keep a rude race from acknowledged rights4 ,blood is spilt and lives are sacrificed1 not by the one or two1 but by the hundred4 ,but there is another battle to be fought in ,africa1 in the interests of the ,christianity that is in ,england and ,america2 a battle against superstition1 and all the ignorance and violence included in it1 against the slave trade and its demoralizing influences4 ,it1 too1 will cost men and money4 ,in its accomplishment1 lives will be laid down4 ,already in the new fields opening1 one and another have fallen1 until six1 perhaps1 have thus far given up their lives in this cause4 ,the advance guard1 the scouts1 have not all escaped the perils of such service4 ,it costs money1 too2 but it will not cost half as much to convert a savage ,african as it will to kill him4 ,missions are cheap compared with war4 ,and then1 look at the end of it all4 ,money and blood to extend territory1 to defend a flag6 ,where is the treasury1 and where the lives ready to be laid down that the banner of the ,prince of ,peace may be set up in ,equatorial ,africa1 and its inhabitants be made subjects of ,him whose dominion hath no end8 ,read these emphatic words of ,david ,livingstone1 so well illustrated by his own quietly heroic life3 8,we talk of #8sacrifices' until we fear the word is nauseous to ,god4 ,we have no ,english female missionary biography worth reading1 because it is all polluted by the black man's idea of sacrifice4 ,it ought not so to be4 ,jesus became a missionary and gave ,his life for us4 ,hundreds of young men annually leave our ,franklin1 a full complement for the ships could have been procured of officers alone1 without any common sailors4 ,and what thousands rushed to ,california from different parts of ,america on the discovery of gold6 ,how many husbands left their wives and families6 ,how many ,christian men tore themselves away from all home endearments to suffer and toil and perish by cold and starvation on the overland route6 ,how many sank from fever and exhaustion on the banks of the ,sacramento6 ,yet no word of sacrifices there6 ,our talk of sacrifices is ungenerous and heathenish40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,negro ,,hegira4 ,it is not many months since we had to record the ,liberian exodus fever4 ,the movement which excited so great hopes among the deluded blacks has passed out of sight1 and the holders of ten-dollar shares in the barque ,azor are no nearer the tropical shores of ,africa than they were a year ago4 ,from those who went out in so ill-advised a manner1 for a long time almost nothing came back to us but their wail of suffering as they reached their journey's end4 ,and now another impulse has seized upon thousands apparently of the negro population of ,mississippi and ,louisiana1 to leave the places where they were born and reared and seek new homes4 ,as early as the middle of ,march probably fifteen hundred had found their way to ,st4 ,louis under the impression1 it is said1 that they would be supported in that city and provided with free transportation to ,kansas1 where1 on arrival1 they would receive from the ,government1 lands1 mules1 money and agricultural implements4 ,a small proportion of them appeared to be in comfortable circumstances1 and proceeded by steamer or rail to ,kansas ,city or ,topeka4 ,others were entirely destitute and dependent from the first on charitable aid4 ,thousands more were reported as only deterred from coming by lack of means to pay their way up the river4 ,the mayor and citizens of ,st4 ,louis were in quite a panic over their visitors4 ,what should they do with them1 or how keep them away8 ,but the feeling of kinship led the colored people of the city to give them such welcome as they might4 ,the basements of three colored churches were opened to them1 and food and shelter were generously given by their brethren according to the flesh1 and they were helped toward their destination as far as might be4 ,thus another is added to the many strange1 sad stories in the history of this dark-skinned race4 ,this sudden impulse moving upon this great mass of men and women may not have been reasonable1 and yet it must have had a reason4 ,kansas seems to be to them a magical name1 synonymous with freedom1 friends and happiness1 in their crude thought4 ,it was sought to turn some of them to ,iowa1 where work and pay were offered2 but no1 ,kansas was the goal from which they could not be turned away4 ,there seems to be no possible interpretation of this so general migration1 other than that they have given up in despair the thought of peace or prosperity in their old homes4 ,for of all the inhabitants of our soil they are the least migratory in their nature2 they cling to the old ,state and the old homestead on which they were reared4 ,but repeated wrongs have worked at last on their slow minds the conviction that better things can only be in store for them far away4 ,not political deprivations1 for they seem easily to have given up that contest1 and they 8don't vote much20 but the wrongs of a hard tenantry system1 by which they have been compelled to rent land at #aj an acre for the year--land worth not much more than that at sale--with various other extortionate charges by the way1 bringing the laborer out at the year's end no better1 but rather the worse off for all his toil1 and with no liberty even of complaint2 these are the things which have at length wrought out their natural and inevitable result4 ,the consequences of this movement1 if it be suffered to go on--and who can stop it8--are manifold and of most serious import4 ,the planters are already alarmed at the lack of laborers for the year which is just opening upon them4 ,a desertion of 8hands0 is a most dire calamity in an agricultural community4 ,political changes may follow those of population1 and if this hegira goes on1 the proportion of representation may be seriously changed between ,louisiana and ,kansas4 ,there can be no question but that the negro can1 if he be well treated1 do better in the ,gulf ,states than in the cold climate of ,kansas--at raising cotton and the sugar-cane than wheat and stock4 ,is there no serious warning in this movement to the people of those ,states8--a lesson not political so much as industrial2 an intimation that fair treatment even of the lowest1 poorest and most ignorant classes1 especially if they are held by no artificial bond like ownership1 is essential to a rendering of the service for which they were valued once as slaves1 and for which they are no less indispensable as freemen4 ,there is policy as well as right in justice1 and the law of gravitation is as real and as irresistible in masses of men as in the realm of material things4 ,the ,south needs the negro quite as much as the negro needs the ,south2 and unless its leaders of thought and action help its people to recognize their mutual dependence1 and teach them to conciliate and not to abuse the arm that is ready to sow and gather their crops1 they will have to do without it4 ,the present hegira is but a hint of what may be4 ,is it not a hint1 also1 as to how so great a loss may be avoided8 ,for1 after all1 dislike the truth who may1 the negro is 8a man and a brother40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,woman',s ,,work ,,for ,,woman4 ,every once in a while a feeling prevalent in the churches gets valuable than silver or gold4 ,i sometimes think the angels might almost envy us in this work40 ,within a few months the ladies connected with the ,first and ,second ,churches of ,oberlin have united to support a lady missionary among the freed women4 ,the money is already provided for1 and the missionary will soon start on her mission of love4 ,and now ,i learn that the young ladies connected years of opportunity among the poorest of the poor1 we answer1 8,something of which she need not be ashamed40 ,within five months from the time when the first gun of the rebellion sent its shot at the heart of the ,union1 ,congregationalism1 through the ,american ,missionary ,association1 was at ,fortress ,monroe with bread and clothing1 with books and ,bibles1 with teachers and preachers4 ,nor was this the only channel of its charity to the needy4 ,it maintained a vast work of physical relief during and after the war1 through the ,new ,england and ,national ,freedmen's ,aid ,societies1 and through agencies of more private bounty4 ,and not alone in the way of physical relief1 but a large number of teachers were sent out by these same agencies1 and kept in the field for years and years4 ,they have passed away1 indeed1 but the amount expended by them was very large1 how large we will not try to estimate even approximately4 ,the ,society first in the field alone remains to do the work for the ,congregational churches4 ,no sooner had ,general ,butler established himself at ,fortress ,monroe than the ,association pushed in its workers among the unhoused1 half-clothed1 half-starved thousands of contrabands that had flocked inside his lines4 ,from that beginning1 in #ahfa1 the work has spread into every ,southern ,state1 and though its income and its working force are scarcely half what they were in #ahgj1 yet it is among the great societies which our churches cherish and love4 ,it has just completed seventeen full years of labor on the ,southern field1 and the number of thousand students4 ,four of them are of college grade1 and are doing regular college work4 ,the other schools are of ,normal grade1 and designed to bring forward1 as rapidly as possible1 the teachers for the untaught millions4 ,they are all children of the ,association1 and in them are gathered up the fruits of ,congregational liberality and labor in behalf of the colored race4 ,these schools are an enduring investment for this work1 and hold property in buildings1 lands1 apparatus and endowments1 to the value1 probably1 of eight hundred thousand dollars4 ,it should be said1 however1 that many of the buildings were put up by aid from the ,freedmen's ,bureau2 but this aid was set apart as the proportion of the public moneys which should appropriately flow through ,congregational channels4 ,the churches established in the ,south are a result of the same effort4 ,their chapels and houses of worship represent a money value of fifty thousand dollars more4 ,what ,congregationalism has to show is in these permanent institutions for the mental and moral training of the colored people4 ,it is not all that is needed1 but it is an investment of inestimable value1 and one which will compare enough to accumulate property1 and they are anxious to take advantage of the educational opportunities afforded them40 ,the colored man is valuable to the ,south4 ,the white people know it4 ,the above is important testimony to his worth and increasing usefulness4 --,the ,bainbridge ,democrat gives1 unwittingly1 testimony to the industry and thrift of the colored laborer3 8,the ambition of every negro man is to have a home of his own2 and it is no mean ambition2 yet1 if something is not done1 this generation will live to see the day when this class of labor cannot be obtained at any price2 and if we cannot supply it with labor just as good1 there will be no other alternative for the white man but to #8go4' ,people have no use for lands when there is nobody to cultivate them2 and as the colored people set up in their little cabins upon their poor and sickly lands1 just in proportion will our finest and best acres depreciate in value4 ,this is a question big with interest to our people1 beside which others sink into nothingness40 ,application3 ,the colored laborer is becoming a settled1 independent property holder1 and his own master4 ,when he can work1 buy and sell for himself1 and own his cabin1 he is emancipated from domineering dictation4 ,whoever owns his own labor must control the market4 --,after all1 there is an inclination to block this aspiration of the colored man4 ,the ,atlanta ,constitution holds that it is an open question whether this effort should be encouraged4 ,it holds that there are two solutions of the labor problem which is now vexing the farmers4 ,either the negro must be made comfortable as a tenant1 or he must be encouraged to provide himself a home4 ,either something like the ,english tenant system must be adopted or the system of small farms will prevail4 ,there is something peculiarly attractive in this ,english system4 ,whether it could be made to fit the peculiar needs of the present and the contingencies of the future1 is a question that the editor is not just now prepared to discuss4 --,the colored man being an ,american citizen1 it is improbable that the ,english tenant system can be made to fit his case4 ,the rights of citizenship will secure to him the rights of labor4 ,the homestead delivers him from serfdom1 and secures to him the independent ballot4 --,many influential colored men are advocating colonization doing remarkably well4 ,such is also the story of the ,institute at ,waco4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association may count in with its best work the founding of these ,institutes1 which being well set up have flowed into the public school system4 ,the impetus given and the standard put up yet abide in large measure4 ,the tour finds its western limit at ,san ,antonio1 that ancient seat of ,spanish ,romanism1 with its antique mission fortifications yet standing in their frowning strength4 ,that early pre-emption secures two-thirds of the present population1 #ba1jjj1 to the ,romanists1 who have three massive stone cathedrals--one for the ,spanish1 one for the ,german and one for the ,english speaking people1 and who have their extensive ,nunnery and ,jesuit ,college1 which are patronized not a little by ,american families4 ,this city is the metropolis for ,southwestern ,texas1 which is as large as the whole of ,new ,england4 ,it has also an immense wholesale trade with ,texas was suffering dreadfully from an eight months' drought4 ,the plain of ,san ,antonio was an exception1 being irrigated by the waters of the mighty springs just above the city1 which1 forming the ,san ,antonio ,river1 furnish the hydrant supply for that great population1 and send babbling streams through all the streets and over all the surrounding gardens and farms4 ,so may that sainted city be a fountain of moral refreshing in all that region6 ,the ,tillotson ,normal ,institute of ,texas1 under the excellent ,mrs4 ,garland1 has already sent out twenty teachers4 ,its beautiful site1 overlooking the city1 is this summer to be crowned with its comely edifice1 which1 beyond the outer shell1 is to await the incoming of funds for its completion4 ,this trip has resulted with me in a profound impression as to the need of this institution and as to the grand sweep of its future usefulness4 ,nothing better can be done for the ,freedmen of ,texas4 ,this empire1 stretching a thousand miles on the ,rio ,grande and eight hundred miles eastward to the ,sabine1 calls mightily for such an institute to train those who shall be the teachers of her sable children4 ,these immense areas of cheap1 rich1 southern lands1 that were never cursed by the filth of slavery1 are calling in the ,freedmen to take to themselves homes and farms and the respectability that comes from ownership of the soil4 ,such people1 most of all1 hunger for good schools4 ,texas is liberal toward her colored school children4 ,to furnish them teachers1 skilled in the art and trained so that they shall exert a wholesome social and spiritual influence1 is the great desideratum4 ,the cluster of churches made up of ,corpus ,christi1 ,goliad1 ,helena1 ,schulenburg and ,flatonia1 are organized into the a pressing necessity in all the past of the work here1 but at present is more urgent than ever4 ,this city is rapidly increasing in population4 ,the increase of the colored population keeps pace with the white in numbers1 and far outstrips the white in ignorance and poverty4 ,the number of vagabond black children here would astonish you4 ,on the ,sabbath1 the vacant lots and outskirts of the city are thronged with them4 ,they are without parental restraint1 and never attend meeting or ,sabbath-school4 ,they are ripening in vice and crime4 ,there is a chain-gang in the city1 composed1 as ,i learn1 of boys ranging from ten to fifteen years of age4 ,there are many children among the county convicts4 ,thus they are drifting to the penitentiary and to ruin4 ,once in the penitentiary1 they are lost1 for the convict prison system of this ,state is bad4 ,this city is full of devil-traps4 ,these strangers who are moving in will largely become victims4 ,now1 we should have some agency by which as many as possible of these families can be reached4 ,their domestic condition is deplorable4 ,in fact1 this may be said of the colored families generally of the ,south4 ,they need influences and instruction that can best1 and1 as ,i believe1 only be carried to them by a woman missionary4 ,the women1 the mothers1 the homemakers of this people1 must be instructed and led to better things in their homes4 ,they must be seen in their houses4 ,with such homes as are common among them1 it is well nigh impossible for them to be ,christians4 ,large families living in one room--you know how it is--comfort1 cleanliness1 modesty and religious devotion are almost impossible4 ,illiterate1 the ,bible must be read to them2 ignorant of their moral duties as parents1 they must be taught4 ,strangers to domestic comforts and necessities1 they must be made acquainted with them4 ,superstitious and fanatical1 they must be introduced to places and modes of a scriptural1 instructive and reasonable worship--a thousand matters of great importance must be brought to their attention and kept before their minds1 until the proper impression is produced4 ,this can only be done by a missionary moving about among them at their homes4 ,this person should be a woman1 because women are principally to be reached4 ,now1 can you not commission ,miss ,stevenson for this work8 ,in connection with her school1 she now does a great deal in this direction1 but not a tithe of what needs to be done4 ,she is thoroughly acquainted with all these people1 has had ten years' experience among them1 and is admirably adapted to the work4 ,she has a heart for it4 ,please consider this4 ,another matter3 ,the young men connected with this church and congregation have organized a ,library ,association4 ,a ,library has been started--number of volumes at present very small4 ,i have thought that perhaps you had in or about your office some spare books that you could send to us4 ,we want to build up a some first impressions on entering the service of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 last autumn1 and you now ask for my impressions after three months' experience and observation4 ,so brief a residence in a single ,southern city does not qualify one to speak with authority on the various questions pertaining to your work among the ,freedmen2 but it does enable him to test your methods and to examine the results achieved4 ,he can thus judge of the adaptation of means employed to the ends desired1 and can forecast the future with more confidence4 ,there are some things of which ,i am fully persuaded1 by my short residence at the ,south2 one of these is1 that the colored people in this country are not dying out4 ,i occasionally hear it said that they are4 ,possibly the wish is father to the thought4 ,but they are not only here to stay1 but they are here to multiply and increase as did the ,jews in ,egypt2 and they are already so large a factor in our population that their character and condition are to affect the character and welfare of our country far more than is generally realized4 ,i have been happily disappointed in witnessing the industry and thrift of the ,freedmen as mechanics and common laborers2 the colored men seem to do very nearly all the work which is done1 and with the aid of the women1 who are equally industrious1 they secure an honest and1 what is to them1 a comfortable living4 ,the most dependent and least progressive class of the ,freedmen are those who work the plantations on shares4 ,the planter dictates his own terms to the tenant--furnishes him team and tools at his own price--sells him provisions on credit at rates far above the cash market price1 and then charges interest1 fixing the per cent4 to suit himself4 ,when the crop is gathered1 if the renter does not find himself in debt to his landlord1 he is more fortunate than many4 ,he rarely finds himself richer for his summer's work4 ,the simple rules of arithmetic1 thoroughly understood by the tenant1 will remedy all this2 and when ,i hear the colored children at school reciting the multiplication table so enthusiastically1 ,i am sure it is a prophecy of a 8good time coming0 to them4 ,my observation convinces me that the colored people are very desirous for the education of their children1 and that their children acquire learning with as much facility as any other class4 ,let all the colored children and youth of the ,southern ,states have access to schools conducted by competent teachers1 and in a very few years they will solve the political and social problems that are just now so embarrassing4 ,they will not only take care of themselves1 but they will be very valuable auxiliaries in taking care of the nation4 ,i find in the colored churches of different denominations specimens of very estimable ,christian character4 ,i find1 also1 just those infirmities which ,i should expect if ,god made the ,caucasian and the ,african of the same blood4 ,i have found the colored congregations very decorous and eagerly attentive to the preaching of the ,gospel4 ,i find them quite accessible for religious conversation1 and apparently thankful for the interest manifested in their behalf4 ,they furnish1 therefore1 a field for ,christian effort that is full of promise4 ,if there is another missionary field more inviting1 or promising richer harvests to faithful culture1 ,i know not where it is found4 ,i am profoundly impressed with the importance of the schools1 and especially of the higher institutions established by the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and by the ,mission ,boards of other ,christian denominations4 ,these institutions must train multitudes of competent teachers1 who will educate the masses4 ,in these institutions must also be educated a native ministry to meet the wants of their people at home1 and to carry the ,gospel to the dark continent from which their fathers came4 ,it is difficult to conceive of a work more important1 or promising more beneficent results1 than that which is being done by the higher educational institutions for the ,freedmen4 ,the importance of enlarging their capacity for receiving pupils1 and enabling them to aid indigent pupils in defraying the expenses of their education1 cannot be over-estimated4 ,the relation of the ,freedmen to politics raises questions that are very perplexing and threatening4 ,the ,southern ,states have1 for the present1 virtually disfranchised the colored men2 and they seem united and firm in the purpose to exclude them from all influence in politics1 unless they will vote for the party that so recently sought to perpetuate their bondage by a dissolution of the ,union4 ,what1 then1 should the colored men do1 and what should their friends do for them8 ,many of them are intelligent and patriotic1 and worthy to have a share in the government of the ,state and the nation4 ,but many of them are as utterly unfit1 at present1 for such responsibility as are the most ignorant classes in our ,northern cities2 but they are improving4 ,every year adds to their intelligence1 and if the helping hand of ,christian philanthropy is not withheld1 they will1 by education1 by temperance1 by morality and more intelligent piety1 by industry and the accumulation of property1 win for themselves a position of respectability4 ,they will not then need soldiers to protect them at the polls4 ,they will take care of themselves4 ,their ballots will be received and counted4 ,not only so1 among the whites there will be two parties1 as of old1 that will vie with each other in soliciting the colored vote1 by out-bidding each other in the promise of favors in return4 ,is it not wisdom1 then1 for the colored man patiently to bide his time1 meanwhile striving more earnestly for the qualifications than for the rights of a voter8 ,and is it not wiser for the friends of the ,freedmen to furnish him every facility for acquiring the qualifications of a voter1 than to wrangle forever about his rights8 99 99 99 99 99 ,emerson ,institute--,early ,discouragements1 ,later ,encouragements4 ,,rev4 ,d4 ,l4 ,,hickok1 ,,mobile4 ,for various reasons1 among them the sickness of yellow fever1 our work here commenced under very unfavorable circumstances4 ,our school opened the #bjth of ,november1 almost two months after the regular time1 with only #ag scholars the first week1 and with but little prospect of any considerable increase4 ,the teachers were all new except ,miss ,stephenson1 and hence they did not know what to expect1 and therefore not enough about the work to be discouraged4 ,ignorance1 sometimes at least1 is bliss4 ,if it did not give us faith1 it saved us from being faithless4 ,there are some things that are food in a negative way by preventing the usual waste in the system4 ,knowledge is power4 ,ignorance is somewhere along there when it saves us from the need of power4 ,we accepted what we found as being all that we had any right in our simplicity to expect1 and carefully hid it as leaven in the meal4 ,the leaven1 however1 seemed wonderfully 8little10 and the meal a great deal more than three measures2 but ,god has blessed our work beyond our expectation and faith4 ,the measure1 8according to our faith10 was pressed down and running over4 ,our numbers rapidly increased so that by ,christmas we had about #ge scholars1 and after the holidays our numbers came up to more than #aej4 ,we still have accessions every week1 and the prospect is that before the close of the year we shall have more scholars than we have room for4 ,already the primary room is filled beyond its seating capacity4 ,the school has at present four departments3 the primary1 which numbers about #fj2 the intermediate1 which numbers between #dj and #ej2 the normal1 which numbers about the same1 and the higher normal1 which at present is only a small class studying ,latin1 geometry and natural philosophy4 ,the 8,a0 class of the normal1 which is quite large1 will soon be in this department4 ,we feel that we are having the confidence and co-operation of the colored people4 ,the last few weeks has encouraged us very much4 ,we recently had a literary1 musical and social entertainment for the pupils and patrons of the school4 ,it was held in the normal room of our building1 which we also use as an assembly room1 where we provided extra seats somewhat beyond rather than according to our faith2 but not only was every seat filled1 many went away because they could not even find standing room4 ,at the close of the literary exercises the pupils brought forward their parents and friends and introduced them to the teachers1 when sociability and 8the shaking of the hands0 became the order for the remainder of the evening4 ,the history of our school work for the past few months is repeated in our ,sabbath-school and church work4 ,we began with scarcely more than five loaves and two fishes4 ,at the first religious meeting which ,i attended there were just seven present--five colored and two white people4 ,what were they among so many8 ,but ,god has graciously given us the increase here also4 ,our ,sabbath-school now numbers #fj1 with #aj teachers1 and is increasing every ,sabbath4 ,it is yet a small school1 indeed1 but it is in good working order4 ,the machinery is complete in all its parts4 ,its lack is inward rather than outward4 ,it needs only the animating power of the ,holy ,spirit to make it a living body4 ,we have got the dust together and have formed it1 and we are praying that ,god would breathe into its nostrils that it may become a living soul4 ,to this end the teachers have just resolved to hold a half-hour prayer-meeting at the close of the school each ,sabbath4 ,our church is quite small4 ,congregationalism makes but little show in this typical ,southern city4 ,it will be a good many years before we have ,new ,england on the ,gulf2 yet ,i believe the leaven is here that is to leaven the lump4 ,our church contains a few earnest1 faithful workers4 ,there are those who have watched with ,christ in the dark hour4 ,their days of vigilance will soon be over1 when they may sleep in ,jesus and take their rest4 ,may ,god bless them6 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,revival of ,education--,a ,useful ,church4 ,,rev4 ,,george ,e4 ,,hill1 ,,marion4 ,i cannot say that we are enjoying a revival of religion1 but we are in the midst of a revival of education1 which is here at the ,south1 emphatically1 the handmaid of the ,gospel4 ,the ,lincoln ,normal ,institute1 for colored pupils of both sexes1 was founded in #ahfi by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,six years ago it passed into the hands of the ,state1 which makes an annual appropriation of #d1jjj for the teachers' salaries4 ,this year the school has taken a fresh start1 having enrolled #bag pupils1 and a new building is about to be erected for their accommodation4 ,in the ,normal ,department for the training of teachers1 there are classes in ,latin1 ,greek and ,french1 as well as the higher ,english branches4 ,the order and discipline are equal to the average of our high schools at the ,north4 ,its pupils sustain a literary society1 for weekly essays and discussions1 and also publish a monthly paper4 ,one young man walks ten miles every day to attend the school4 ,the influence of such an institution is felt in the very atmosphere4 ,the fever for learning is contagious4 ,men who work hard all day in the field or at their trade are so eager for knowledge that1 to meet the demand1 classes have just been organized for a night school4 ,meanwhile our little church is keeping on the even tenor of its way4 ,there have been several hopeful conversions1 and four are about to unite by profession4 ,no falling off in attendance on ,sabbath or evening meetings4 ,four of our young people are this year at ,talladega ,college1 and two promising young men have the ministry in view4 ,nineteen were present at our teachers' meeting last week4 ,at the 8,home0 we have three meetings ,sunday evenings3 one for women1 one for boys1 and a girls' class prayer meeting1 with a kindergarten for the little ones during the week4 ,one of the pleasant incidents in our winter's work has been the distribution of five barrels of clothing from kind friends at the ,north4 ,the people are poor1 but not penurious4 ,a girls' sewing class has sent #ba1 the avails of their handiwork1 for the ,mendi ,mission1 and the church appropriates the 8weekly offering0 once a month towards the pastor's salary4 ,it is truly delightful to see the readiness of this people for religious instruction1 and to witness the fruits of our labor in their marked elevation4 ,they are quick1 industrious1 pleasing1 and unobtrusive in their manners1 with a decided distaste for 8loudness0 of every sort2 showing1 too1 as much decorum at church1 and as proper a regard for the ,sabbath1 as ,i have ever seen in any community4 ,from all which1 it may be inferred that here1 at for a two days' break in school routine1 and we have it4 ,last evening the singing class1 under the direction of ,prof4 ,mc,pherron1 gave a concert at ,central ,church4 ,the house was filled with as fine an audience as could be gathered in any city4 ,there was a generous sprinkling of 8white folks10 including several of the local board of trustees and other appreciative friends4 ,the proceeds will help some of our needy students to books2 while a greater and more lasting good will result from the influence of the music sung--not upon those only who took part in the singing1 but upon the large audience who listened so attentively1 and who were cheered and encouraged by what the young people of their race are doing4 ,new scholars come in almost every week1 and though some drop out our number is kept well up to #bjj4 ,we hear interesting and encouraging reports from our last year's graduates1 who are all teaching4 ,dr4 ,j4 ,e4 ,roy has lately seen two of them1 and reports that they are doing well4 ,one has an evening school for the parents and older ones1 and both are doing good work in ,sabbath-school4 ,in a letter just received from one of them she says that she has to humor the parents in their whims1 or they keep their children out of school4 ,she writes3 8,before school began my ability to teach was doubted by a father4 ,he wanted to get a book for his son1 who had never been to school2 he intended to buy a ,webster's speller4 ,i told him what book he needed1 but he would not get it until many of the patrons of the school reasoned him into it4 ,i have a ,sabbath-school1 which is almost beyond my ability to teach4 ,i am superintendent1 treasurer1 secretary1 and everything4 ,i find it difficult to interest the children4 ,last ,sabbath there was an attendance of twenty-seven40 ,of her day-school she writes3 8,it is very difficult to make the children think that they do not know everything4 ,many of them have been studying books that they cannot even read understandingly4 ,i am trying to govern by kindness as much as possible1 and punish only when ,i see that ,i cannot possibly help it4 ,i think the children are progressing as rapidly as they could anywhere under like circumstances40 ,thus the influence of our school and our teaching is extended1 and in this way are the masses to be reached4 ,christian people of the ,north1 let the means be liberally provided to educate these teachers who are to carry light and knowledge to their people4 ,our work is not all overspread with cloudless skies4 ,we are under many disadvantages1 and experience some sore disappointments4 ,not all whom we look upon with great hopes and earnest desires that their future may be marked by ,christian usefulness1 meet our expectations4 ,we find careless and idle and heedless pupils2 some1 though they are very eager to learn1 and work hard1 make very slow progress2 but1 to the credit of this people be it said1 a stubborn or wilfully disobedient pupil is rare4 ,on the whole1 the encouraging cases are largely in the majority1 and the opposite kind lead us to exercise more care1 perseverance1 patience and prayerfulness4 ,our thanks are due to the weeks4 ,we have worked together1 and ,god has crowned our feeble efforts with success4 ,in our conference we decided to hold a series of religious meetings1 intending thereby to stir up1 if possible1 the members of the church to greater activity4 ,these meetings were commenced1 and1 as they continued1 the interest deepened1 both ,christians and sinners being impressed4 ,many rose and asked the church to pray for them4 ,to our great surprise and joy1 sinners have come flocking home1 backsliders have been reclaimed1 the church has been made alive1 and many out of ,christ are inquiring4 ,the manifest result of our season of revival thus far is1 that six have been added to the church4 ,four young ladies1 all under twenty-three years of age1 joined by the profession of their faith in the characterized by excitement2 not the least 8shouting0 was manifest during their continuance1 but there was a deep seriousness shown upon each countenance4 ,the colored people here are so wild and physical in their religious meetings1 while our church is so quiet1 that they speak skeptically about our ,christianity4 ,an ,a4 ,m4 ,e4 minister asked one of our young converts to-day1 when she was converted4 ,they are still looking through ,elijah's wind1 earthquake and fire for the appearance of ,god1 and but few wish to receive ,him through the 8still small voice40 ,our financial condition is not what we could wish1 but in the circumstances ,i do not think it could be much better4 ,the members failed this year to meet their pledges2 they are fifty dollars short4 ,but this was caused by having to meet unforeseen expenses4 ,we enclosed our church lot just before ,christmas4 ,i advised them to do this1 as the edifice was so much exposed4 ,the carpenter's work ,i did myself1 and charged by music4 ,we need an organ2 but we are too poor to buy one4 ,will some kind friend send us an organ for our ,sabbath-school8 ,i am sure that great good could be done with an organ in attracting the attention of children and drawing them in from the streets4 ,there are numbers of children strolling around on the ,sabbath4 ,children here are allowed to go where they wish4 ,if they want to come to my school1 they come2 if not1 they stay away2 and parents have but little influence over them in this respect4 ,i would like to capture such1 and ,i think ,i should be able to do this with music and worthy of relief were people who were suffering from the effects of the fever1 and could only make money enough to pay the rent4 ,to such1 a few barrels of coal or some provision and shoes gave a start1 so that they could get on very well alone4 ,we have had an unusually cold winter1 and people have consequently needed more fuel1 the sickly ones often having to remain in bed to keep warm4 ,a pastor of one of the colored churches has been a great help in this work1 by reporting needy cases in his part of the city4 ,one poor woman1 whom he reported1 when visited1 said1 #8,sure the ,lord never gained access to this neighborhood before1 but by relieving this family ,i gained the confidence of the people1 and they invited me to hold a weekly prayer-meeting there1 which is well attended4 ,several families which have been relieved now send their children to our ,sunday-school4 ,although several thousand dollars were sent here to relieve yellow fever sufferers1 many of the colored people received but little1 some nothing4 ,it is very sad to hear of those who were so feeble that they could not stand in the ranks to await their turn at the relief office1 but sat on the ground till night came1 and then receiving no attention1 went home to die6 ,one man1 who had always been a good provider1 sent his family to the country during the fever1 but fell a victim to it himself1 and of their clothing being burned when her husband died1 to prevent the spread of the disease4 ,when ,i found her1 the baby was three months' old1 and had never had but two garments1 and the mother could not leave the three little ones1 all under four years of age1 to get work4 ,she was relieved1 and now the cold is nearly over1 and as she has rented her house and taken small rooms herself1 she saves a little money1 which1 with the work she can get1 will1 she hopes1 keep the wolf from the door1 and she is very thankful for the relief that came just when she most needed it4 8,i will only add that us that it is all important to push our work farther into the country4 ,there lies on either side of us a vast territory1 densely populated by an anxious and thirsty people who are dying for want of the truths of the ,gospel4 ,in regard to the work at ,avery1 the new year has opened up quite favorably to us in all our departments4 ,the church ,i am glad to say1 is progressing far beyond all expectation4 ,sunday1 ,feb4 #i1 was our communion day1 and it did seem as if the presence of the ,lord was with each one in spirit and in power4 ,there were added to the church ten souls1 who were that day with us permitted to partake of the ,lord's ,supper4 ,another feature connected with the church work is full of interest1 and that is the prayer meetings4 ,they are1 as a general thing1 largely attended by the country men1 and great interest is manifested among them4 ,we hope that many will be brought to the ,lord during this year2 but this will depend very greatly upon earnest prayer on the part of the ,christians at home4 ,one thing is discouraging1 and that is the condition of the ,sabbath-school4 ,we have no papers1 no ,bibles1 and scarcely any singing-books1 with which to carry it on4 ,all who know anything of ,sunday-school work are perfectly aware that much depends upon the interest that one is enabled to keep up among the children and adults by such means2 it is both laymen and ministers1 are earnestly opposed to ,chinese immigration1 for reasons which seem to them ample and even imperative4 ,as against such reasons1 vituperation and contempt fall powerless4 ,but it should be observed that these reasons do not--with1 at most1 two exceptions--apply to ,chinese immigration alone4 ,the ,irish laborer underbid the native ,american1 and crowded him out of the field4 ,in some cases great suffering temporarily ensued4 ,but the ,american at length found other and better fields to which1 indeed1 the ,irishman's toil prepared his way4 ,it would be so again4 ,the ,irish1 ,french and ,german immigrants have brought with them principles and practices sadly at variance with those which gave us free institutions1 our ,christian ,sabbaths1 and our happy homes2 and thoughtful ,christians viewed this influx of an alien element with great alarm for many years4 ,for the same reasons1 and some others1 they cannot but view with anxiety an influx from the heathen nations over our ,western sea4 ,but what did we do about it in the former case8 ,did we lock the door8 ,did we attempt to dyke back the incoming tide8 ,no2 but we said1 ,we will meet these people with the ,gospel2 we will bring their children into our public schools2 we will make the very air they breathe redolent with the principles of a genuine ,christian liberty1 and thus we will make them no longer ,irish1 or ,french1 or ,germans1 but1 in the second generation1 if not the first1 ,americans all4 ,and this process is saving the nation's life4 ,why not try it again with the new immigration from the old ,orient8 #b4 ,but there are two special reasons for opposing this ,chinese immigration2 one is1 that it consists of unmarried men1 homeless and vagrant1 and our country needs homes2 the other is1 that they are exceptionally clannish1 refuse to associate and assimilate with us1 and remain1 after thirty years1 as much an alien race as when they first arrived4 ,i feel the force of these facts1 but is there not a cause8 ,they are1 it is true1 a very conservative race2 slow to change1 and ardently attached to their native land2 but if it were otherwise1 ,i submit whether the courtesies they have received are of the sort which would specially incline them to fall in love with our country or ourselves4 ,the ,chinese can be ,americanized2 and in response to treatment such as ,european immigrants receive1 would long ago have begun to make homes and to identify themselves with us4 ,and1 by the grace of ,god and the power of the ,gospel1 they might have been1 and may yet be1 educated into intelligent1 patriotic and useful citizens4 ,he who doubts this ought no longer to profess and call himself a ,christian4 #c4 ,there is no occasion to be frightened lest we be overwhelmed by a rush of ,chinese immigrants4 ,the lapse of thirty years finds about #ajj1jjj in the ,united ,states1 and to-day they are going faster than they come2 going1 not because they are frightened1 but for the very sensible reason that they can do better elsewhere4 ,the supply has exceeded the demand4 ,the wealthier ,chinese find their impoverished countrymen thrown upon their charities1 and they use every influence they can bring to bear to restrain others from coming4 ,what if there are #djj1jjj1jjj of them just across the sea2 they may as well stay there and starve1 as to come #aj1jjj miles and do the same4 ,if the recent bill had become a law1 and had been executed1 no others in all the land would have profited by it so much as the ,chinese in ,california4 #d4 ,the anti-,chinese mania seems to neutralize1 even in otherwise honorable men1 all scruple about ascertaining the truth of statements before they make them1 or even about repeating statements proven to be false4 ,i brand it as a falsehood that the ,chinese in this country are in any sense coolies4 ,they are freemen4 ,if they have borrowed money to come here1 it has not been of the ,six ,companies2 nor are the terms on which such loans are made in any wise different from those on which a ,new ,englander might borrow in order to 8go west40 ,i brand it as a falsehood that there is among them any imperium in imperio1 defying our laws1 and meting out to its victims punishment even unto death4 ,the ,six ,companies are voluntary societies for mutual aid4 ,sometimes1 instead of going to law1 our ,chinese agree to refer matters in dispute to the presidents of these companies as a board of arbitrators2 but such arbitration is in principle and practice exactly that which ,american business men often resort to2 exactly that which between ,christians ought to be always a sufficient substitute for suits at law4 ,some years ago ,chinese merchants were able to arrange with the steamship companies to sell no tickets to ,chinamen unless they could show what has been incorrectly called a permit from one or the other of these companies4 ,the object was to prevent men from leaving with their debts unpaid4 ,in order to obtain one of these passes1 a man must announce at the office of the company to which he belongs his intention of returning to ,china1 and thus give his creditors1 if he have any1 an opportunity to protest4 ,the result is1 ,i suppose1 that the glorious ,anglo-,saxon liberty of running away from unpaid bills is1 for them1 somewhat curtailed4 ,but our ,congregational ,association of ,christian ,chinese has the same authority to issue passes that the ,six ,companies have1 and its passes are equally respected4 ,and for years no ,christian ,chinaman has recognized any obligation to either of these companies in any way4 ,i go into detail on this point1 because much has been made of it1 as an out-cropping of that imperium in imperio of which so much has been said4 ,it goes the length that ,i have stated1 and no further4 ,finally1 ,i brand as falsehoods the representations constantly made as to the success of missionary labor among the ,chinese here4 ,i am sure that ,mr4 ,blaine would not wilfully belittle such a work4 ,he is a follower of ,christ1 and a friend to his fellow-men1 but he has listened to those who were neither of these1 or he would never have said that 8not one in a thousand have even nominally professed a change from heathenism1 and of this small number nearly one-half had been taught in missionary schools in ,china40 ,the known and counted results are more than five times as large as the 8missionary10 787 whom he quotes1 represents1 and of them1 ,i venture to say1 that not one in a hundred ever entered the door of a mission-school in ,china2 while their conversion has not been merely nominal and negative1 8from heathenism10 but real and positive1 to a faithful1 prayerful1 earnest ,christian life4 ,meanwhile1 there are grand results that cannot be measured1 but which will tell mightily on the future1 in the starting of thought1 the loosening of the bonds of superstition1 the preparation of the way of the ,lord4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts ,,for
