99 ,,our ,,outlook ,,for #ahgi4 ,the review of our last year's work has been so recently and so fully given in connection with the annual meeting of the ,association1 that it is scarcely needful for us to ask our readers to join us in another survey of what has already been accomplished4 ,it is more fitting1 as we stand upon the threshold of the new year1 to ask what are the signs of the times1 and what the demands of the work before us4 ,there are still dark clouds in the ,southern sky4 ,a mere granting of civil and political rights by formal enactment is of small importance unless the rights themselves are honestly allowed and faithfully accepted4 ,the adjustment of alleged wrongs we must leave to politicians if not to statesmen1 and to courts of law if not of justice4 ,our work1 obscure and remote as it may seem1 is more fundamental and important than that of either ,congresses or courts4 ,for by whatever defences the ,freedman may or may not be surrounded1 the only safeguard of his rights must be in his fitness to exercise and his ability to maintain them4 ,it is for us1 through all the changes of the year1 to keep steadily to our work4 ,it is not checked because the winter is upon us2 nor will it be over when the summer comes4 ,it is not for this year's harvesting alone that we are working2 we are sub-soiling and so laboring for the permanent reclamation of these vast fields4 ,we believe that more depends upon the moral and intellectual elevation of the ,freedmen of our land1 not only in regard to their welfare1 but in regard to the great questions of which they are only a factor1 than upon anything which can be done for them by legislative enactment or military power4 ,we purpose1 then1 to press on with the school and the church4 ,intelligence and virtue are the ,jachin and ,boaz1 the two great pillars of the porch of the ,temple of ,american citizenship and liberty4 ,while it rests on anything else1 it is uncertain and unsafe4 ,our lesser work at home among the ,indians and ,chinese will demand the same moderate but constant share of our attention as before4 ,our connection with the six ,indian ,agencies1 through the ,interior ,department1 is not a matter of expense1 but mainly of time and care4 ,if we shall be relieved from that1 our missionary work will still remain and may be enlarged4 ,and though the immigration of ,chinamen has been checked to some degree1 and their interest in learning ,english has been abated by the abuse they have received1 the work has been1 and is yet1 too fruitful of good to be given up4 ,our ,african mission has passed through one year under its new organization1 with apparent prosperity and success4 ,we shall need to strengthen its forces before long4 ,we shall want both the men and the means4 ,there is work enough in our outlook and encouragement to do it4 ,we would remind our readers as well as ourselves1 that the year which is most full of sacrifice and service for the ,master1 is most sure of all to be ,a ,happy ,new ,year4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,appeal ,,for #ahgi4 ,our friends are thoroughly informed of the fact that our debt of late has been rapidly diminishing4 ,we are sorry to say that the same thing is true of our income4 ,that1 too1 has been growing less4 ,we learn that this is true1 also1 of our sister societies4 ,they1 also1 have noticed a falling off in their revenues4 ,we do not like to make much ado over our troubles2 but we have been very frank in acknowledging our mercies1 and we owe it to the work1 and to those who sustain it1 to tell them our perplexities as well4 ,our receipts for the last two months have been very inadequate for the work we have in hand4 ,what does this mean to us with this outlook for #ahgi8 ,does it signify withdrawal from fields already under cultivation8 ,already the ,executive ,committee have had under serious advisement two cases1 in which it was necessary either to stop fruitful work at important points or spend a little more money4 ,retrenchment is easier to talk of than to accomplish4 ,it costs as much sometimes to stop as to go on4 ,a temporary suspension is sometimes more expensive than continuous work4 ,our teachers are engaged and our buildings are prepared for the year4 ,shall we stop the whole machinery of a great factory to save the price of the gas which lights it8 ,that would be ruinous economy indeed4 ,but we do not seriously believe that the friends of the three most needy races on our continent have lost heart1 or hope1 or means1 to carry out the generous plans they have devised4 ,these last months of #ahgh have been trying alike to them and to us4 ,our plea is only this1 that1 with the new year 7if the debt be not by that time altogether a thing of the past71 there may be a fresh and final attack upon that enemy of our peace2 and more even than this1 that there may be a fuller and a steadier flow of the ,lord's money into our treasury for the wants of the work of #ahgi4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we are happy to say that a goodly number of ladies whom we have asked to assume the responsibility of raising a share of #be1 towards the payment of our debt1 have replied favorably4 ,the following extract from a letter sent us by one who has been abundant in her efforts for the ,freedmen1 indicates the enthusiasm and thankfulness with which some of the ladies respond3 ,your kind letter of ,november #bfth found me watching in the sick room of my brother2 but my heart went right up to ,god in gratitude that ,i was not forgotten by the officers of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and that they still think ,i can do something to help on this great work4 ,i have never ceased to be interested in the work in all its length and breadth1 and to do what little ,i can for it4 ,the debt has occupied much of my thought4 ,i have wanted to do something to help pay it beyond the little ,i could give myself4 ,now that ,i can go out under your guardianship1 ,i will be one of two hundred to raise one share 7#be71 and as much more as ,i can4 ,i am sure the debt will soon be paid4 ,there should be no lack of funds to carry on this work4 ,it is very strange our nation cannot see it and feel it too4 ,an old and faithful friend from ,sag ,harbor1 ,n4 ,y41 sends us thirty dollars to make a life member4 ,at the same time he asks us to star the names of his two oldest children1 who were among the first of the twenty whom he has thus added to our list4 ,they have gone up higher4 ,he concludes thus3 ,i was much interested in reading the article in ,december number1 page #chg1 8,students ,want to ,carver1 ,mass417 who was at our annual meeting at ,taunton1 remembering doubtless that the ,prophetic ,conference was in session during the same days in ,new ,york ,city1 puts the two things together thus3 ,one comes from a meeting like that1 through which glimpses are caught of opportunities for work1 of openings by the ,unseen ,hand into spheres of service which stretch out into the future beyond the range of our human vision1 with the overwhelming conviction that the ,lord isn't just at present to stop the wheels of this world4 ,it is not like the ,lord to give such problems to ,his people1 which are pressing upon this ,christian nation today with such power1 and which demand time for their solution1 and then to cut the ,gordian knot by the sword of ,his 8coming10 as if ,he had met with a tangled question which ,he himself could not untie4 ,the red1 blue and white and black marble1 which ,divine ,providence has brought into this land1 tell of a building of ,god grander than any ,persian palace1 the foundations of which seem to be just being laid1 rather than the completion thereof to be nigh at hand4 ,the vastness of the preparation points to the magnificence of the ,lord's dominion in the hearts and over the lives of men4 ,the ,book of ,god's ,providence is as much inspired as the ,bible itself4 ,and whoever studies the former as prayerfully as the latter1 must labor hard to stifle the feeling that the clock of earth1 instead of getting ready to stop1 is being wound up to keep good time for a thousand years1 as a prelude to that perfect righteousness which shall dwell forever on the new earth and beneath the new heavens4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,london ,,union ,,missionary ,,conference4 ,the ,london ,union ,missionary ,conference was held in ,november4 ,the ,congregational churches of ,america were represented by ,dr4 ,clark of the ,american ,board1 and ,dr4 ,o4 ,h4 ,white of the ,freedmen's ,aid ,society1 of ,london1 who also represented the ,american ,missionary ,association1 to which the ,f4 ,a4 ,society is auxiliary4 ,the last gathering of the kind in ,england was in #ahfj1 at which one hundred and twenty-six delegates assembled4 ,the sessions were mainly private1 the societies represented were chiefly ,british1 and plans were discussed rather than achievements reported4 ,this later meeting was somewhat different in its character4 ,six hundred delegates were in attendance from various lands and denominations of ,christians4 ,it was not so much a conference on methods as a comparison of results4 ,the sessions of the week were apportioned to the work in the various lands4 ,a great mass of information was collected1 which will doubtless be more impressive and complete in the volume of proceedings to be published1 than it could have been in the hearing4 ,the character of the meetings may be inferred from the following sketch of the time devoted to the 8,dark ,continent10 in which we are especially interested4 ,we copy from the correspondent of the ,christian ,union3 8,two sessions on ,tuesday were devoted to ,africa and its many tribes4 ,an ,irish peer1 the ,earl of ,cavan1 presided1 and the attendance of delegates and friends was large4 ,dr4 ,underhill1 of the ,baptist ,missionary ,society1 discoursed on the benefits of emancipation1 and showed what an important bearing the evangelizing of the negro race must have on the conversion of all ,west ,africa4 ,sir ,fowell ,buxton1 the son of the great advocate of emancipation forty years ago1 described the three schemes now being carried out for planting new missions on the three great lakes of ,central ,africa4 ,dr4 ,stewart1 of the ,free ,church ,mission at ,livingstonia1 on ,lake ,nyassa1 described the principle and the plan of the missionary institution at ,lovedale1 in the ,cape ,colony1 which he has managed for several years4 ,this is a model institution1 with industrial as well as educational and theological departments2 and is just the thing which the native tribes of ,south ,africa need for their enlightenment4 ,dr4 ,lowe1 the ,secretary of the ,edinburgh ,medical ,missionary ,society1 also read an admirable paper on the work1 methods and usefulness of medical missions generally4 ,several of the medical missionaries who have recently gone out to ,africa were ,dr4 ,lowe's pupils4 8,among the effective speakers on these ,african missions were ,dr4 ,waugemann1 of ,berlin1 who described the work of the ,berlin ,society1 especially in the ,transvaal2 ,dr4 ,white1 of the ,freedmen's ,aid ,mission2 the ,rev4 ,e4 ,schrenck1 of ,basle1 who spoke of work in ,ashantee2 and the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,moffat1 who told the ,conference about his ,bechuanas1 and of course with his strong gray hair and his eighty-three years of age and sixty-two years of service for ,christ1 received an ovation at its hands4 ,the noble presence and the stirring words of the grand old man on the ,african day were a striking feature in the meetings of the ,conference40 ,such gatherings must help on the cause of ,christian comity in missions1 as well as broaden the views of all who are engaged in working the field under their hands4 ,it is well to look up sometimes from our own furrow1 even if we have to stop ploughing for a little1 that we may realize that the field is the world1 and that the harvest belongs to one ,master4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,political ,,progress ,,of ,,the ,,freedmen4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,m4 ,e4 ,,strieby4 ,was it wise to give the ballot to the ex-slaves8 ,the answer that came in the hour it was given1 from the ,congress that gave it1 from the ,northern people that sustained it1 and from the colored people that enjoyed it1 was an emphatic and enthusiastic 8,yes60 ,the answer that came at that hour from the ,southern white man was in a suppressed voice1 and was an execration hissed out between grinding teeth4 ,since that hour the voice of the ,southern white man has grown firmer1 and1 as it came up from misgoverned ,south ,carolina and ,louisiana1 has rounded out into a full-toned 8,no60 ,nay1 more1 it has been re-echoed from the ,north1 and recently with special emphasis from the lips of one of the purest ,christian scholars on the heights of ,christian learning in ,new ,england4 ,what answer do ,i give8 ,unhesitatingly1 8,yes60 ,i say nothing about the mere party reason given either then or since1 for ,i do not write as a partisan4 ,i put the wisdom of the ballot on more substantial grounds4 #a4 ,it saved the ,freedmen from being again reduced to slavery4 ,vagrant laws were passed1 which confined them to the plantations on which they had engaged to work1 the end of which would have been a serfdom attaching them to the soil4 ,the ballot saved them from this4 #b4 ,it gave the ,freedmen and the ,south a free school system--a greater boon than ,southern legislation ever gave them before--a boon without which all else would have been well-nigh in vain4 ,that system was modeled after the best patterns at the ,north1 and although it has been somewhat modified and enfeebled in practical operation1 is yet a solid corner-stone in the foundation of the new superstructure which the ,south is rearing4 #c4 ,the ballot gave the ,freedman a sense of self-respect1 and commanded for him the respect of others4 ,to him it was an education and an inspiration4 ,it gave him the standing of a man among men1 and prompted him to become worthy of his position4 ,it was a power to him in the early days of his freedom1 when he needed every help to sustain him in that freedom2 and to-day1 though it is held in check and almost useless1 yet it is a slumbering giant1 and is watched with respectful caution by the whites4 ,for who can tell what such a slumbering power might do if aroused8 ,at present the black voter is politically conquered4 ,the 8white man's government0 is established1 and it is the purpose of the white man that it shall remain so4 ,this has been easily attained in the ,states where the white majority is undoubted4 ,in the few ,states where the blacks are in the majority1 the white man is determined to rule1 peaceably if he can1 forcibly if he must4 ,the ,chisholm murder and the ,hamburg massacre are but samples of the methods that will be resorted to if the effort is pushed persistently to restore the supremacy of the black man in politics4 ,when we remember how that supremacy in those ,states was abused1 how can we ask the restoration if the abuse must again follow8 ,the problem is difficult4 ,it can be solved only by one formula4 ,the black man must be protected in his political rights1 and he must be so enlightened as to use and not abuse those rights4 ,there will be no permanent advantage from a mere partisan triumph of the black man4 ,if achieved1 as matters now stand1 bayonets will again be needed to sustain it1 and will become once more a source of angry discussion at the ,north and of concentrated bitterness at the ,south4 ,the experiment may again be necessary2 but a far better thing should be speedily1 steadily and efficiently pushed forward--the training of the colored voter for an intelligent and responsible manhood and citizenship4 ,if every colored voter could be accompanied to the polls by a file of soldiers armed with muskets1 his ballot would represent the musket and not the man4 ,but if he becomes a property owner1 with all the interest in the welfare of the community which property gives2 if he is educated and can take an intelligent interest in the welfare of the community2 and if he acquires a weight of character that challenges respect1 he will need no soldiers to guard him to the polls1 and his vote will represent the man and not the musket4 ,when the black man shall reach such a position he conquers caste-prejudice and wipes out the color-line in politics4 ,color is significant only as it represents condition4 ,change the condition and the color is of no consequence4 ,with that change the white and black men at the ,south will divide on politics as white men do at the ,north1 from differing views as to the best measures to promote public weal4 ,look on this picture3 ,an armed and organized mob is breaking up a political gathering of the blacks and their friends1 and in the background are the overawed ,freedmen retiring from the polls4 ,look1 also1 on this picture3 ,a company of ,united ,states soldiers are keeping guard over a body of legislators1 mostly black1 who1 with reckless rascality1 are squandering the public funds1 to the ruin of the ,state and the disgrace of the nation4 ,turn not from these pictures with indifference1 for they are no fancy sketches2 nay1 face them1 for the history of at least two ,states of this ,union is liable to be a perpetual oscillation between the two4 ,but now look on this picture3 ,a colored man is tilling his land1 adorning his home1 and gathering around him the refinements of life4 ,near by is the school-house1 where his children1 with hundreds of others1 are receiving the instruction of skilful teachers1 and not far off is the church edifice where that man and his neighbors worship ,god under the ministration of a well educated and pious minister4 ,which picture do we choose1 not as a matter of artistic preference1 but as the practical model for patriotic work8 ,the only safety is to extend that last picture till it shall cover the whole canvas and blot out the other two4 ,in that way only can a life and death struggle between two irreconcilable forces be avoided4 99 99 99 99 99 8,,these ,,my ,,brethren40 which ,he claims between ,himself and them--8these my brethren40 ,oh1 the touching condescension to name them by this title6 ,what we do for these humble and desolate ones we are not only doing for our ,lord1 but for the brethren of our ,lord4 ,he takes it as a special favor to ,himself4 ,and this service is graduated to the lowest capacity--it is service done to only one of the least of these4 ,the standard is not that we should serve the mass of these ,his brethren1 but any one of them1 according to the measure of our ability1 even down to a single act done to one of them in the right spirit and as a revelation of a character in which we delight4 ,then the obligation runs up to as great a number as our opportunity and our ability may reach4 ,the intervention of organic efficiency greatly multiplies the duty and the privilege of the individual4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association1 as has been potently said1 is set for the care of the three despised races in our country4 ,though the ,indian and the ,negro and the ,chinaman are the objects of prejudice and violence and injustice and hatred on the part of our people1 nevertheless ,christ speaks of them as among 8these my brethren20 and the prayers and the sympathy1 and the service and the giving of substance in their behalf ,he counts as rendered to ,him4 ,this organization cannot discharge any one's personal duty1 but its instrumentality is offered to all who would use it in the discharge of individual obligation to ,christ and to ,his brethren4 ,its opportunities belong to all who would use them1 and by these a single ,christian may reach not only 8unto one of the least of these10 but unto many4 ,at the ,great ,day1 when the ,master shall surprise you1 humble ,christian1 with a benediction for service rendered to ,his brethren among these despised ones1 and you deprecatingly answer1 when and where1 ,his revealing response may be--when you reached them with your prayers and your substance through that ,association which offered you its means of operation4 ,and surely all its workers among these outcast peoples1 in the ostracism and opposition and hatred which confront them1 may even in this of the ,negro1 and the semi-civilization of the ,chinese1 than it can afford to fraternize with a civilization that is impregnated with a spirit of ecclesiasticism1 or endure the philosophies of ,st4 ,louis or the ,internationals4 ,rather is it for us to overcome these forces that are the outcroppings of centuries of ,roman development1 as well as those of ,indian or ,chinese or ,negro semi-civilization4 ,this right of asylum involves another thing--the right of a man to say1 8,i will leave this land and go to another0--the right to migrate if he does not find things subservient to him4 ,we once hailed the ,irishman to come and build our railroads4 ,we welcome the ,german now1 as he comes and terraces our mountains and teaches us how to garden4 ,we welcome the ,frenchman--we welcome all4 ,but we say1 8,lo6 poor ,indian1 go ,west4 ,east of the ,appalachian is too good for you2 we want it4 ,go ,west2 go ,west4 ,we will give no rest to the soles of your feet40 ,do we want the ,black ,hills8 ,migrate6 ,we will surround you with a cordon of soldiers and a cordon of ,government agents1 who will eat the life out of you4 ,keep on1 poor ignorant1 keep on6 ,as to the ,african1 there are not a few ,americans1 even in this day1 who think a righteous solution of the ,african question is to ship them all off to the dark continent4 ,so far as the ,american ,colonization ,society keeps in view education and other ,christian instrumentalities1 ,i bid them ,god-speed2 but if they desire to send the ,negro out of the country1 ,i say1 ,no6--a thousand times1 ,no6 ,let us solve the problem right here where ,god has placed them4 ,and we say to the ,chinese1 as he comes upon his ship1 8,turn your prow back towards the ,flowery ,kingdom2 don't touch our golden ,west40 ,is that the spirit that welcomes the ,irishman1 the ,german1 the ,italian1 the ,frenchman8 ,why not give as broad an opening to the ,chinaman as to the ,irishman8 7#b47 ,in the next place1 ,god is testing that principle which is set forth in the preamble of our ,constitution--the right of a man to pursue happiness in such a way as he may elect1 provided he does no wrong to his neighbor4 ,and ,i opine that although happiness involves the pursuit of higher aims1 it begins on the basis of labor4 ,labor is the essential element of ,american civilization4 ,if ,i labor1 then ,i have the right of choice to enter into whatever labor ,i please4 ,no matter whether ,i am an adept or not1 circumstances will give the verdict4 ,with the right of choice of a man's calling comes the right of competition4 ,carry it to its extreme1 if you please4 ,if there are fifty-two thousand clerks1 ,i have a right to become the fifty-two thousand and first1 and starve4 ,then1 after the inherent right of labor follows the right to such property as ,i may accumulate4 ,what ,i may produce1 that is mine absolutely1 and no man can touch it4 ,here we are brought face to face with this tremendous question between ,irish and ,german labor1 and the low-priced labor of either the ,negro or the ,chinaman4 ,but1 ,american citizens and ,christians1 if we respect the right of a man to exercise such functions as ,god has given him in such way as his conscience may dictate1 and to choose his own occupation1 shall we not defend this right of labor1 and the right to pursue happiness as each may elect1 and in the face of ,communism1 defend the right of the ,chinese to enter the market and compete with all labor of whatever nationality8 7#c47 ,there is a third right or principle put to the test--that every man is equal before the law4 ,whether he be ,jew or ,gentile1 ,irishman or ,german1 ,negro or ,chinaman1 he is the equal of all men before ,god4 ,but what justice can a ,chinaman get out of a ,hoodlum court8 ,what justice has the ,negro got out of a ,southern court8 ,to the establishment of that justice we must bend our energies1 for it is vital to our institutions that a man before the law is equal with his neighbor4 ,if you have broken the shackles of the ,negro1 break those of the ,indian4 ,if he outrages the law1 try him by process of the law and make him amenable1 but deal with him as a citizen4 ,i opine that we shall arrive at this1 sooner or later4 ,of course this includes with it the privilege of every one to enter public life1 provided he proves his capacity4 7#d47 ,but there is another principle being tested1 and that is the right of education4 ,it is a settled point in the development of ,american civilization1 that education is essential to the proper discipline of the citizen--some degree1 at least1 of elementary education4 ,now when1 according to the census of #ahgj1 in the ,states of ,mississippi and ,texas1 #if per cent4 of the colored people were thoroughly ignorant2 and when in another ,state1 #ie per cent4 were completely ignorant2 in another1 #ic per cent42 in two others1 #ia per cent42 and in a last one1 #ij per cent42 #hh per cent4 of the entire colored people of the ,south being in perfect ignorance2--does it not behoove us to have a law for compulsory education if we hope to have true culture and citizenship8 ,was our late ,president far from right when he brought forward this idea8 ,what salvation is there for the ,southern ,states unless universal education shall be carried into effect8 ,as the right to enter into competition is inherent as much as the right of choice in labor1 so we regard the right of choice of one's religion4 ,the whole way should be made open for the highest acquisition of intellectual and moral knowledge4 7#e47 ,so1 too1 our ,protestant ,christianity is under test4 ,and here we are encountered at once by the fact that ,christians still cultivate the caste spirit4 ,if the ,jew drew such a subtle line between himself and the ,gentile1 the white ,christian draws a similar line between himself and the black ,christian4 ,if the ,greek considered himself to be of such high intelligence that he classed all others as barbarians1 ,christians allow their prejudices to make the same broad distinctions between different classes of humanity1 which it was the office of ,jesus ,christ--blessed be ,his name6--to obliterate and utterly extinguish4 ,that prejudice1 that caste spirit which ,christians cultivate in the ,north to an extent that amounts to social ostracism1 must be broken down1 if we would maintain ,protestant ,christianity4 ,further1 this question connects itself with the true missionary spirit4 ,the best way to evangelize ,china is to evangelize the ,chinese as they come to the ,pacific ,coast4 ,the best way to evangelize ,africa is to evangelize the ,african ,negro of the ,south4 ,over against ,protestant ,christians in the ,south and the ,chinese on the ,pacific is that dark power which has involved the world in hopeless contentions4 ,there stands the ,jesuit with his deep1 treacherous features1 his characterless casuistry1 and his sacrifice of all things else to glorify the ,church of ,rome1 no matter what may be the result on his country4 ,that subtle power which permeates our political institutions with such great magnitude and force1 stands face to face with ,protestantism in the ,south--with the ,negro question1 the ,chinese question1 and the ,indian question4 ,if we are to serve ,protestant ,christianity1 we must free ourselves of caste1 and learn to love the ,african and the ,chinaman at our doors4 ,it is easy to speak well of the ,chinaman away off in ,china--to have an overflow of sympathy for the poor ,african away in the dark continent2 but it is a very different thing to have sympathy for them in this country4 ,the spirit of the ,gospel of ,jesus ,christ must actuate us and lead us to this4 ,these1 then1 are the five great principles that underlie ,american civilization--principles that are being tested by these three races or nationalities4 ,our professions are large4 ,let us live up to them in these five great principles4 ,it is ,lord ,bacon who says that 8,when hempe is spun1 ,england is done0--meaning that when ,henry1 ,elizabeth1 ,mary1 ,philip and ,edward had passed away1 ,england would be done4 ,we may say that if these five principles--the right of asylum1 the right of labor1 of political freedom1 of education1 and free play to ,protestant ,christianity be done--,america is done4 ,god save the ,state6 ,and what is the agency--or one agency--by which that may be accomplished8 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association1 because it gives us ,christian education4 ,because it brings together the college1 the church and the home4 ,and will not your devotion to a pure ,christianity1 free from the spirit of caste1 and filled with the spirit of genuine love1 manifest itself by your support of such an ,association8 ,may we not gauge your feelings in regard to these five principles by the support you give to such a society8 ,may we not implore you that as you value the rights of property and free government you array yourself solidly against ,communism and its ally--,romanism2 because these are craftily working together4 ,would you behold free ,protestant ,christianity established in this country8 ,then give your support to this ,association1 that these three races may prove us to be a people who love liberty in its deepest significance as liberty in ,christ4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,return ,,of ,,rev4 ,,floyd ,,snelson4 ,just after the annual meeting we learned that the health of ,mrs4 ,snelson was in such condition as to make her speedy return from the ,mendi ,mission1 ,west ,africa1 a probable necessity4 ,her husband has arrived with herself1 their children1 and those of ,dr4 ,james1 whose wife had died abroad4 ,the change of climate and of occupation has already proved of great benefit to her4 ,it is a great disappointment to us all to lose so soon the earnest and discreet service of the head of our ,mendi ,mission4 ,whether he will be able to return or not is still an unsettled question4 ,but these experiences are teaching us some valuable lessons4 ,first of them is this1--that we must send no men or women to the ,west ,coast of ,africa without submitting them to a severe physical examination1 such as is required for enlistment into the army or as a prerequisite to a life insurance policy4 ,for we find that upon those who went from this country in thoroughly sound health1 with no weakness from previous disease or tendency to special complaints1 the climate has had little or no bad effect2 but where there was any such predisposition or impairment of physical vigor1 the malarial heats of the ,west coast have hastened its rapid development4 ,we send no more recruits1 then1 without medical attestation to their soundness of body1 in addition to the testimony we have heretofore required as to their intellectual and spiritual health4 ,mr4 ,snelson brings much valuable information from the field1 which we hope to lay before our work as a school being subordinate to the church4 ,it is a training school1 patterned after the missionary colleges of the ,american ,board4 ,its grand aim is to raise up a native ministry so as to plant churches1 and through them carry an intelligent gospel to the masses4 ,we are not especially afraid that there will be any lack of school-teachers4 ,with our eye fixed steadily on our missionary work1 enough who cannot attain to the ,christian ministry will become teachers1 and they1 catching the spirit of the institution1 will become missionary teachers4 ,it is surprising to see how this their sincere and heartfelt gratitude for the new organ sent them2 it has increased the interest of our services greatly4 ,last ,thursday1 ,nov4 #bh1 the first ,thanksgiving service ever held in this place among the colored people was observed in our church2 therefore it has a history in connection with our work here4 ,i made it a union service1 inviting the ,baptists and ,methodists to worship with us4 ,this congregation of ,baptists1 ,methodists1 and ,congregationalists worshipped as though ,christ was the ,head of the ,church1 instead of any one of the denominations present4 ,the service was solemn and intelligent4 ,it truly seemed that the ,lord was in ,his holy temple4 ,after service a gentleman of about sixty or seventy years of age said1 8,i have been here forty years1 but ,i never heard of such a thing as a ,thanksgiving service among the colored people40 ,this is the 8dawn of a new age40 ,pray for us4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,missouri4 ,free ,schools in the ,state4 ,,rev4 ,j4 over its territory1 looking after the five school-houses of the ,association1 ,i have been delighted with the evidences of progress in the free school system4 ,it is a great joy to see in these cities and towns the new1 large1 two-story brick school-houses of modern style and furnishing4 ,the system works more slowly into the back settlements4 ,but in a ,kansas ,city paper ,i see it stated that in the country places of ,jackson ,county there are one hundred and fifty of these schools4 ,at ,warrensburg ,i saw the imposing three-story stone edifice of the ,state ,normal ,school1 built by that town and its county of ,johnson1 and now occupied by four hundred pupils from every part of the ,state4 ,special provision is made in the law for its enforcement in behalf of free schools for the colored children4 ,these are managed by the same school board and are supported from the same tax fund4 ,these officers are compelled to provide schools wherever there are fifteen of such scholars in the district4 ,if they fail to do it1 it is the duty of the ,superintendent to require it to be done4 ,i met one case where the out-districts declined to co-operate with the ,board in this matter1 when only a threatened appeal to the ,superintendent brought them to terms4 ,i have been gratified to see the heartiness with which the five boards ,i have dealt with are pushing the free school system in behalf of blacks as well as whites4 ,nor have ,i been deceived1 as some may imagine4 ,the ,lincoln ,institute at the ,capitol1 as a ,normal ,school for colored teachers1 receives an annual appropriation from the ,state of #e1jjj4 ,a democratic editor told me that that was considered as a matter of honor1 and that so there was no danger of its being discontinued4 ,this institution of sacred name had also a sacred origin4 ,for its founding1 the #fb;d and #feth ,regiments of ,u4 ,s4 colored infantry1 when discharged from service in ,january1 #ahff1 contributed a fund of #f1cgi4 ,the ex-officio members4 ,revs4 ,r4 ,d4 ,foster and ,m4 ,henry ,smith have served as principals the most of the time since it was opened in #ahga4 ,the ,association has its five school houses at ,troy1 ,fulton1 ,westport1 ,warrensburg and ,lebanon4 ,these were procured in part by aid from the ,freedmen's ,bureau in #ahfg-i4 ,they were at first run by teachers sent from the ,north1 but were gradually taken up by the local school boards4 ,i find them all in such use now4 ,three will probably be sold to those boards at their present low valuation4 ,two will be sold to local colored ,methodist churches1 as the schools require larger and better houses1 which the authorities intend to build4 ,these houses have also been used all the time as places of worship by the colored people4 ,the seven or eight colored teachers in these schools were educated in ,lincoln1 ,fisk1 and kindred institutions4 ,i have found them young people of character1 and of tact in handling their schools4 ,they have to be examined4 ,they receive from #ce to #de a month1 about the same as white common-school teachers4 ,the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 has done the work of initiation4 ,by this tour of inspection ,i am deeply convinced of the wisdom of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 in putting its strength upon ,normal and ,collegiate institutions1 and so doing a wholesale business4 ,raise up teachers and send them back into the country4 ,raise up the men and women for the professions and for the higher walks of social life4 ,that is the work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,africa4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,church ,,organized ,,and ,,dedicated ,,at to organize and dedicate a church to ,god4 ,owing to our inability to reach ,avery on ,saturday in time to hold preliminary exercises1 examination of candidates for admission1 etc41 this part of our duty was deferred till ,sunday morning4 ,this1 with our other duties1 made our programme for the day quite full4 ,early ,sunday morning the ,board met in the church to begin the labors of the day4 ,the sun shone brightly1 yet we could but feel that many round us were groping in darkness1 without any clear idea of ,him in whose image they are made4 ,brother ,snelson was elected moderator1 and ,a4 ,p4 ,miller secretary4 ,brother ,gomer1 ,general ,agent of ,shengay ,mission1 who favored us with his presence1 offered prayer4 8,guide me1 oh6 ,thou great ,jehovah60 was sung4 ,in absence of letter missive1 the minister in charge gave his reasons why a church should be established or organized at ,avery4 ,he spoke of the willingness of the people to receive the story of the ,cross2 said that some came far to hear 8,god palaver10 and express their joy in being permitted so to do4 ,brother ,hallock1 the interpreter 7native71 and ,brother ,wise1 were asked several questions4 ,their reasons were clear and very satisfactory4 ,it seems evident that the industrial work at this station1 which gives employment to many1 is a means of good both to mission and people4 ,it was deemed fit to organize a church at ,avery1 to be known as the ,second ,congregational ,church of the ,mendi ,mission4 ,by #aa o'clock1 at the ringing of the second bell1 the chapel was crowded with natives1 for the most part in native costume4 ,brother ,snelson spoke to them through an interpreter1 telling them the object of our coming together4 ,the candidates for admission to the ,church were then called forward4 8,a charge to keep ,i have0 was sung by the congregation4 ,prayer was offered by ,brother ,snelson1 after which the missionary hymn1 8,from ,greenland's icy mountains10 was sung2 and as it was being sung1 each missionary1 as he looked upon the sable congregation1 could but feel that the 8harvest is plenteous1 but the laborers are few40 ,the roll was then called by ,brother ,jackson2 after which the candidates were examined1 and by vote of the ,council eighteen were received into full membership4 ,some of the candidates were not received because of not being legally married4 ,they were instructed to attend to this matter1 and then they might be received into the church4 ,they are to remain under watch-care until this obligation is met4 ,after examination of candidates1 ,brother ,snelson spoke to them about things peculiar to their country--slavery1 polygamy1 etc4 ,the meeting was then dismissed to meet at #g ,p4 ,m4 ,brother ,gomer1 who has for years known our work1 expressed his astonishment at seeing so large a congregation assembled in the house of ,god at this place1 and at the good order kept throughout the exercises4 ,some of those received were old members1 while others were new converts1 among whom were three chiefs1 ,peah ,carle1 ,carray ,phemah1 and ,sei ,lt4 ,these men exercise a vast influence over their people1 and their being reached makes the reaching of their people easier4 ,the people assembled at the ringing of the second bell4 8,praise ,god from ,whom all blessings flow0 was sung4 ,brother ,snelson then led the congregation in the ,lord's ,prayer4 ,a hymn was sung1 after which the ,rev4 ,j4 ,gomer offered prayer4 8,alas6 and did my ,saviour bleed80 was sung4 ,portions of ,scripture were read by ,a4 ,p4 ,miller4 ,the services of organization and dedication were combined1 owing to want of time4 ,brother ,snelson spoke through the interpreter1 and told the candidates what their step meant--turning from death unto life4 ,the church1 too1 he said1 we had come together to dedicate to ,god and ,his service4 ,brother ,snelson preached1 choosing ,luke xii4 #cb1 as his text--8,fear not1 little flock1 for it is your ,father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom40 ,a comparison was made between the people to whom these words were spoken and these our benighted brethren4 ,the promises of ,god were dwelt upon4 ,we must trust in ,him for salvation4 ,the dedicatory prayer was then offered by ,rev4 ,a4 ,p4 ,miller4 ,a hymn was sung4 ,the right hand of fellowship was given by ,bro4 ,a4 ,e4 ,white4 ,the address was delivered by ,rev4 ,j4 ,gomer4 ,the ,lord's supper was then celebrated2 ,brothers ,gomer and ,jackson presided4 ,it was a solemn scene4 ,the ,doxology was sung1 and the benediction pronounced by ,a4 ,p4 ,miller4 ,the meeting was one long to be remembered4 ,one more stronghold is now erected in this land of night to tear down the powers of darkness4 ,we have all reason to thank ,god for ,his blessings thus far4 ,a better day is dawning for these benighted1 long-neglected sons of ,africa4 ,brother ,gomer says that more laborers 7colored7 are wanted in his mission4 ,we1 too1 in a work so ,,eells1 ,s',,kokomish1 ,,washington ,,territory4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we have had another ,indian war1 and1 as usual1 there has been a cry in favor of turning the ,indians over to the ,war ,department4 ,there are some1 however1 of us who will persist in seeing something favorable to ,christianity and the present policy even in this war1 and we think we have our reasons for it4 ,i do not propose1 at present1 to thoroughly discuss the causes of the war1 for ,i am not well enough acquainted with them to do so intelligently4 ,some will lay the blame on ,government1 some on a ,christian policy1 and some on the ,indians4 ,perhaps all may have to bear a part4 ,although ,i believe that the ,government has often treated the ,indians wrongfully1 yet a long course of observation has convinced me that the ,indians are not all saints1 and when the ,government is often crooked1 either intentionally or unintentionally1 and two crooked sticks come together1 there is almost always sure to be trouble4 ,the published statements of ,general ,crook1 who is not supposed to be very sentimental in his feelings toward the ,indians1 and who was at the ,fort ,hall ,agency at the beginning of the war1 implicates the ,government severely4 ,a residence of nearly three years in ,idaho1 #ahga-ahgd1 in the very region of the war1 led me to believe that very little was energetically done for ,christianizing those ,indians4 ,this has been true at some ,agencies4 ,their annual reports show that while the ,government opened wide the doors for ,christian work1 when the present policy was adopted1 and said1 8,we will give you opportunity1 encouragement and aid1 if you will only send the ,indians missionaries10 yet that ,christians have failed to take hold of the work as they ought to have done4 ,if this was true of the ,indians engaged in the late war1 ,christians may have to bear a part of the blame4 ,notwithstanding all this1 some laurels have been added by the late war to the ,christian work which has been done among the ,indians4 ,one 8who wishes to be understood0 has written a letter in which he speaks very harshly against the ,christian workers on the ,yakama ,reservation1 where ,father ,wilbur1 of the ,methodist ,episcopal ,church1 has been successfully laboring for sixteen years4 ,he says3 8,the present reservation system is a failure in every respect4 ,we1 who daily come in contact with the ,indians1 cannot be made to believe that prayer-books1 praying generals1 and ,methodist preachers1 7or any other preachers17 are a good safeguard against the tomahawk and the scalping-knife2 and the pseudo-philanthropists1 the ,christian-mongers of the ,east1 who are paying thousands to send missionaries among these barbarians1 would do us a favor if they would keep them away2 and if the ,u4 ,s4 ,government would be less influenced in its conduct toward the ,indians by the advocates of ,christianity1 our wives and children might be annually spared the sight of murdered husbands and fathers4 ,so far we have been loyal1 while ,indians1 with passes from ,wilbur and other ,agents1 have been on the war-path4 ,we have reliable information that some of the dead ,indians found after the battles near ,pendleton had on their persons passes from ,wilbur40 ,now it is probably a fact that some of the ,umatilla ,indians1 and perhaps a few of the ,yakamas1 were engaged in aiding the enemy4 ,there are always some renegade ,indians connected with each tribe1 as well as white renegades and tramps4 ,as tribes1 however1 they did not engage in the war1 and comparatively few individuals did4 ,in the ,indian war of #ahee-f1 before ,father ,wilbur went among these same ,yakamas1 they were the leading spirits1 and it was the most wide-spread war which has ever devastated this coast4 ,if they and the ,umatillas had joined in this war1 it would have been far more terrible than it has been4 ,inducements were not wanting to lead them into it4 ,it is said on good authority that two thousand horses were offered them by the hostiles if they would join them1 and yet they refused4 ,an army officer in command of one of the battles said that some of those ,indians did nobly in aiding our soldiers to gain the victory4 ,it may be said that they had too much permanent property in homes and farms1 to allow them to engage in the war2 for they knew that if they should do so1 they would certainly in the end lose it all4 ,this is undoubtedly so2 and yet when ,father ,wilbur went among them they had none of this kind of property1 but only movable property which they could carry with them even in war1 as the ,bannocks have done4 ,it is a fact that ,christianity gave them this property4 ,it may again be said that they were thoroughly whipped in #ahee-f and were afraid to engage in war again4 ,they were thus whipped1 and the remembrance of it may1 even now1 do them good4 ,but in #ahfb-c ,gen4 ,crook1 the noted ,indian fighter1 just as thoroughly thrashed the ,indians in ,idaho1 in precisely the same region where the late war was carried on1 and the praise of his effectual work is still in the mouths of the old citizens4 ,this was seven years later than the ,yakama war1 and so much fresher in the minds of the ,indians4 ,no1 it was evidently ,christianity which prevented their joining in the war4 ,gen4 ,howard1 too1 has added new laurels to his reputation4 ,it must be remembered that he is the principal one of our generals who has not been in favor of the transfer of the ,indians to the ,war ,department4 ,this praying general has prosecuted the war with such vigor that the strong papers with strong arguments have sustained him1 and almost invariably those who went with him in his rough marches have defended him1 such as newspaper correspondents1 scouts and the like1 and the 8stay at homes0 have been about the only ones who have found fault4 ,his recent conference with the ,umatilla ,indians since the war has shown such firmness1 justice and ,christianity as to win for him very many friends among those who previously opposed him1 thus showing again that ,christianity is the way of dealing with the ,indians4 ,so ,christianity has won its laurels even in this war4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 8,,california ,,chinese ,,mission40 ,auxiliary to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 yield results in souls apparently converted1 ,i felt the necessity of banding the converts together for mutual fellowship1 for instruction1 and for test-work2 for it seemed unwise1 considering the difficulties under which we must labor in determining the genuineness of the conversions1 to bring them at once to baptism and the church4 ,yet they must not be left quite outside the fold1 and ,i proposed to them the organization of ,the ,chinese ,christian ,class1 into which any ,chinese might come who1 in the judgment of those already members of the class1 had begun to believe in ,christ4 ,this class was to have frequent meetings for prayer and for instruction in the ,bible2 its members were to maintain a fraternal watchfulness over each other1 and were to be baptized only when1 through a probation of at least six months1 they had proved to be steadfast and true4 ,this class at first comprised only such ,chinese as had been led to ,christ through the work of the ,third ,congregational ,church in this city1 of which ,i was then the pastor4 ,afterwards it was found desirable to receive to membership the ,chinese connected with other congregations1 and to enlarge somewhat the scope or design of the class4 ,it was therefore reorganized under its present name1 but with the same principles and conditions of membership4 ,some of the benefits1 in the way of mutual aid and protection1 which the heathen ,chinese seek to secure through their 8,six ,companies10 our ,christian ,chinese1 who have renounced all connection with the 8,six ,companies10 gain through this ,association4 ,its rooms are their places of resort2 a sort of home4 ,they have made a little beginning towards a library of ,chinese works1 mainly religious1 written by the missionaries4 ,the prove himself to be a follower of ,christ4 ,he must bring references from one or more members4 ,his name must be brought before the ,society a week before he can be admitted1 and he is received upon a vote of two-thirds of the members4 ,he must himself sign his name1 and pay the sum of two dollars as entrance fee1 and twenty-five cents every three months1 this money being used to defray the expenses of the ,association4 ,he is expected to do all he can to bring in new members1 and to lead his countrymen to ,christ40 8#c;d4 ,the members are expected to take part in the meetings for worship1 giving counsel and encouragement to one another4 ,if any member does wrong1 he is to be kindly entreated and led back to the right40 8#fth4 ,if any member continue in the violation of the regulations of the ,association1 after three successive remonstrances1 he must be expelled from the ,association4 ,if he afterwards repent and desire to come back1 he is admitted without an entrance #bdd4ej1 of which #ga4jj were for ,bible and missionary purposes4 ,there are besides these1 #bc members belonging to the ,central ,association1 who on account of their places of residence are not yet #afd1 there are #cj or more ,chinese who have been converted1 as we hope1 at ,santa ,barbara1 ,san ,leandro1 ,stockton and elsewhere1 in connection with our schools2 and besides the contributions above reported1 there has been raised at ,petaluma1 ,stockton and elsewhere1 certainly not less than #ajj4 ,when we consider the poverty of these young men1 the smallness of their wages1 the drafts made upon them for parents and others dependent upon them in ,china1 then this #a1cjj which they have contributed during the past year for the nurture of their own ,christian life1 or for the salvation of others1 grows to its true proportions--in our view1 a token of real ,christian heroism4 ,i quote the closing sentences of the statement written for me by the ,secretary of the ,association3 8,no death has occurred during the past year4 ,our ,heavenly ,father has greatly prospered us1 for which we return ,him hearty thanks4 ,we are grateful that ,he has put into our hearts a 8,you will see that the average is very low1 and ,i am afraid it will be still lower4 ,the boys seem to have lost their interest in the school1 and ,i am afraid that ,i am losing mine4 ,it is very
