99 99 --,the new ,chinese ,ambassadors are men from whose intelligence1 experience and wisdom we have much to hope4 ,chin ,lan ,pin1 first ambassador1 is a man of deep learning1 being a graduate of the ,han ,lin ,college1 of the highest class1 and a man of extensive travel and observation as well4 ,in #ahgb1 he visited this country as ,chief ,commissioner in charge of the ,chinese students sent to be educated in the ,connecticut colleges1 and he subsequently visited ,england and ,spain on similar missions4 ,in #ahgd1 he was one of the three ,commissioners who were sent by the ,chinese their cause1 have reaped fair1 if not large1 results4 ,what effect the recent failure of the ,bank of ,glasgow may have upon their future success we cannot tell1 but we fear it may dry up many of the streams from which they had hoped to draw4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,mr4 ,,stanley',s ,,interest ,,in ,,christian ,,missions4 ,it was a remark of ,dr4 ,livingstone's1 that 8the end of the geographical feat is the beginning of the missionary endeavor40 ,and1 although all ,african explorers are not animated with the missionary idea1 yet it is easy to believe that an over-ruling ,providence uses their efforts for missionary ends4 ,mr4 ,stanley asserts1 that the object of his desperate journey was1 8,to flash a torch of light across the western half of the ,dark ,continent40 8,if the natives allow us a peaceful passage1 so much the better2 if not1 our duty says1 go on40 8,we are always under the eye of ,god40 8,the one ,god has written that this year the river ,lualaba shall be known throughout its length4 #8,think1' he says1 to ,frank ,pocock1 #8what a benefit our journey will be to ,africa4'0 ,from these different quotations1 taken from ,mr4 ,stanley's recent book1 we have a right to infer1 that the interests of missions were prominent in his mind throughout his journey4 ,indeed1 his book indicates that he was not only governed by a desire to complete the explorations commenced by ,dr4 ,livingstone1 but also to further the missionary endeavors of that godly man4 ,this was evidenced first on his arrival at ,uganda on the shores of the ,victoria ,nyanza1 where he wrote the following3 8,a barbarous man is a pure materialist1 he is full of cravings for possessing something that he cannot describe4 ,my experience and study of the pagan1 prove to me1 that if a missionary can show the poor materialist that religion is allied with substantial benefits and improvement of his degraded condition1 the task will be rendered comparatively easy4 ,the ,african1 once brought in contact with the ,european1 becomes docile and imbued with a vague hope that he may also rise in time to the level of this superior being who has challenged his admiration4 ,he comes to him with a desire to be taught1 and1 seized with an ambition to aspire to a higher life1 becomes docile and tractable40 8,i find them10 he says1 elsewhere1 8capable of great love and affection1 and possessed of gratitude and other traits of human nature4 ,i know1 too1 that they can be made good1 obedient1 industrious1 enterprising1 true and moral--that they are in short1 equal to any other race or color on the face of the globe in all the attributes of manhood40 ,king ,mtesa1 the despotic ruler over #b1jjj1jjj of people1 appeared to ,mr4 ,stanley the most desirable object for his first efforts4 8,mtesa has impressed me10 he says1 8as being an intelligent and distinguished prince1 who1 if aided by philanthropists1 will do more for ,central ,africa than fifty years of gospel teaching1 unaided by such authority1 can do4 ,i think ,i see in him the light that shall lighten the darkness of this benighted region4 ,in this man ,i see the possible fruition of ,livingstone's hopes1 for with his aid the civilization of equatorial ,africa becomes feasible40 ,mr4 ,stanley further informs us how he followed up his convictions3 8,since the #eth of ,april1 ,i had enjoyed ten interviews with ,mtesa1 and during all1 ,i had taken occasion to introduce topics which would lead up to the subject of ,christianity4 ,nothing occurred in my presence1 but ,i contrived to turn it towards effecting that which had become an object to me1 viz41 his conversion4 ,there was no attempt made to confuse him with the details of any particular doctrine4 ,i simply drew for him the image of the ,son of ,god humbling himself for the good of all mankind1 white and black1 and told him how1 while ,he was in man's disguise1 ,he was seized and crucified by wicked people who scorned his divinity1 and yet1 out of ,his great love for them1 while yet suffering on the cross1 ,he asked ,his great ,father to forgive them4 ,i had also begun to translate to him the ,ten ,commandments1 and ,idi1 the ,emperor's writer1 transcribed in ,kiganda the words of the ,law1 as given to him in choice ,swahili by ,robert ,feruzi1 one of my boat's crew1 and a pupil of the ,universities' ,mission at ,zanzibar40 8,the religious conversations which ,i had begun with ,mtesa1 were maintained in the presence of ,m4 ,linant de ,bellefonds1 who1 fortunately for the cause ,i had in view1 was a ,protestant4 ,for1 when questioned by ,mtesa1 about the facts which ,i had uttered1 and which had been faithfully transcribed1 ,m4 ,linant1 to ,mtesa's astonishment1 employed nearly the same words1 and delivered the same responses4 ,the remarkable fact that two white men1 who had never met before1 one having arrived from the south-east1 the other having emerged from the north1 should nevertheless both know the same things1 and respond in the same words1 charmed the popular mind without the burzah as a wonder1 and was treasured in ,mtesa's memory as being miraculous4 ,as the result of these conversations1 ,mtesa1 who can read ,arabic1 caused the ,ten ,commandments of ,moses to be written on a board for his daily perusal1 as well as the ,lord's ,prayer and the command of the ,saviour1 #8,thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself4'0 ,the encouragement given to ,mr4 ,stanley by his success with ,mtesa1 caused him to send forth his famous appeal1 resulting in the establishment of a mission station at ,uganda by the ,church ,missionary ,society of ,london4 ,he seems1 also1 to have pursued his work during his stay of several months with ,mtesa4 ,meanwhile1 an opportunity was afforded him of testing the genuineness of ,mtesa's conversion4 ,the ,wavuma were waging fearful warfare upon ,mtesa1 during which1 his scouts succeeded in capturing one of their principal chiefs4 ,mtesa was in high glee1 and caused to be gathered a large quantity of fagots with which to burn his prisoner4 8,now1 ,stamlee10 he said1 8you shall see how a chief of ,uvuma dies4 ,he is about to be burnt4 ,the ,wavuma will tremble when they hear the manner of his death40 8,ah6 ,mtesa10 ,i said1 8have you forgotten the words of the good ,book1 which ,i have read to you so often--,if thy brother offend thee1 thou shalt forgive him many times1--,love thy enemies1--,do good to them that hate you80 8,shall this man not die1 ,stamlee8 ,shall ,i not have blood for him1 ,stamlee80--8,no1 ,mtesa1 no more blood2 you must stop this pagan way of thinking4 ,it is not ,mtesa the good4 ,it is not ,mtesa the ,christian4 ,it is the savage2 ,i know you now40 8,stamlee1 ,stamlee1 wait a short time and you shall see40 8,an hour afterward1 ,i was summoned by a page to his presence1 and ,mtesa said3 #8,stamlee will not say ,mtesa is bad now1 for he has forgiven the ,mvuma ,chief1 and will not hurt him4'0 ,mr4 ,stanley1 however1 though he had translated for ,mtesa the ,gospel of ,st4 ,luke entire1 prepared for him an abridged ,bible1 selected a site for a church1 and detailed the boy ,dallington--a pupil of the ,universities' ,mission at ,zanzibar--to remain at ,uganda and serve as a missionary1 did not feel that he had provided sufficiently for the spiritual wants of his convert4 8,a few months' talk10 he says1 8about ,christ and ,his blessed work on earth1 though sufficiently attractive to ,mtesa1 is not enough to eradicate the evils which thirty-five years of brutal1 sensuous indulgence have stamped on the mind4 ,this1 only the unflagging zeal1 the untiring devotion to duty1 and the paternal watchfulness of a sincerely pious pastor1 can effect4 ,and it is because ,i am conscious of the insufficiency of my work1 and his strong evil propensities1 that ,i have not hesitated to describe the real character of my #8convert4' ,the grand redeeming feature of ,mtesa1 though founded only on self-interest1 is his admiration for white men4 ,by his remarks1 he proved he had a very retentive memory1 and was tolerably well posted in his articles of belief4 ,at night ,i left him1 with an earnest adjuration to hold fast to the new faith1 and to have recourse to prayer to ,god1 to give him strength to withstand all temptations that should tend to violate the ,commandments written in the ,bible40 ,mr4 ,stanley's long intercourse with the tribes of the interior enabled him to discover many traits of character that indicate the aptitude of the negro to receive religious truth4 ,on one occasion1 he had dwelt a long while in giving account of great works of art and science1 commerce1 agriculture1 and material wealth2 when he turned to the discussion of the grand themes of ,scripture and ,divinity1 the interest in the latter subject was so intense that ,mr4 ,stanley determined to devote himself1 with renewed energy1 to the promulgation of the doctrines of the ,christian faith1 discovering--what others had learned before--that the negro has a remarkable appreciation of the things of religion4 ,he gives an incident1 which occurred at ,mowa ,falls1 on the ,livingstone ,river1 that displayed a quality of heart very suggestive to those interested in the salvation of the pagan4 ,uledi1 the faithful coxswain who had dared every danger1 and proved dutiful and faithful for years and months1 having robbed the ,expedition of a quantity of beads1 a council of chiefs was called1 and the question was submitted as to what his punishment should be4 ,one of the most reliable and steady men replied1 8,well1 master1 it is a hard question4 ,uledi is like our elder brother1 and to give our voice for punishing him1 would be like asking you to punish ourselves2 yet1 master1 for our sakes beat him only just a little40 ,mr4 ,stanley then inquired of ,shumari1 who was ,uledi's brother1 what punishment he should meet to the thief4 8,ah1 dear master10 ,shumari said1 8it is true ,uledi has stolen1 and ,i have scolded him often for it4 ,i have never stolen4 ,i am but a boy4 ,uledi is my elder4 ,but please1 master1 as the chiefs say he must be flogged1 give me half of it1 and1 knowing it is for ,uledi's sake1 ,i shall not feel it40 8,now1 ,saywa1 you are his cousin4 ,what do you say80 ,young ,saywa advanced and said1 8,the master is wise4 ,all things that happen he writes in a book4 ,perhaps1 if the master will look in his book1 he may see something in it about ,uledi--how he has saved many men1 whose names ,i cannot remember1 from the river2 how he worked harder on the canoes than any three men2 how he has been the first to listen to your voice always4 ,uledi is my cousin4 ,if1 as the chiefs say1 ,uledi should be punished1 ,shumari says he will take half of the punishment2 then1 give ,saywa the other half1 and set ,uledi free4 ,saywa has spoken40 ,it would seem that persons with such instincts as these indicated above1 would readily come to appreciate and accept the sacrifice of ,him by whose stripes we are healed4 ,a thorough perusal of ,mr4 ,stanley's 8,through the ,dark ,continent0 can hardly fail to arouse in the hearts of those yearning to heal 8that open sore of the world10 sympathy and fellowship with him4 ,he had his imperfections1 and met with obstacles which brought them sharply into view2 but the good he accomplished will be the longest remembered4 ,his noble self-denial1 after reaching the ,west ,coast1 as seen in his fidelity to his pagan followers1 indicates characteristics worthy of profound admiration4 ,instead of leaving their conduct round the ,cape of ,good ,hope to ,zanzibar to the charge of others1 and rushing on himself1 to receive the plaudits of the proudest courts of the civilized world1 he quietly and patiently cared for all their wants1 for weary months1 returning them to their homes and friends1 and rewarding them with the liberality of a father's affection1 which will be lovingly remembered among the tribes from whence his servants came1 long after his rich and costly gifts of material things have perished4 ,all this will be worth something yet to the cause of missions4 8,when we were gliding10 he says1 8through the broad portals of the ,congo into the ocean1 turning to take a farewell glance at the mighty river1 ,i felt my heart suffused with the purest gratitude to ,him whose hand had protected us1 and who had enabled us to pierce the ,dark ,continent from east to west1 and to trace its mightiest river to its ocean bourn40 ,that gratitude1 we believe1 is shared by a mighty host of the followers of ,him who shall have dominion from sea to sea--who are already echoing the last words of ,mr4 ,stanley's book--,laus ,deo1 ,laus ,deo4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indian ,,agents ,,we ,,need4 ,the vacancy in the ,indian ,agency1 referred to in the last number of the ,,missionary1 has been filled2 but1 as other vacancies are likely to occur from time to time1 applications1 with proper credentials1 may be forwarded to this office4 ,as to the qualifications necessary1 we can state nothing more clearly than we find it given in an article1 which we republish below1 from the ,springfield ,republican1 written by a gentleman who seems thoroughly familiar with ,indian affairs4 ,we will only repeat that an ,indian ,agency is no sinecure1 and should be undertaken by no man who is not thoroughly competent and self-sacrificing3 ,a residence of two years at an agency in ,dakota gave the writer unusual opportunities for observation of the requirements of this service4 ,the popular impression seems to be that this office is a sinecure1 affording retirement for decayed politicians and inefficient goodies1 whereas the service is1 when faithfully performed1 an arduous one1 requiring exceptional and diversified ability4 ,the agent must have executive capacity1 together with that rare selective faculty that recognizes at sight a competent man for a given place4 ,the character of the agency force of employs1 and the quality of their work1 reflects the personality of the agent4 ,the progress of the ,indians in the schools1 and in learning to work for their own support1 is in proportion to the efficiency of the agent as an executive4 ,a vigorous1 capable man infuses his spirit into his subordinates1 and1 in a more limited degree1 into the natives4 ,the agent needs judicial knowledge4 ,no laws are in force on ,indian reservations1 with a few exceptions1 but the treaties with the ,government4 ,the administration of justice and the punishment of crime are left to the agent1 with such coperation as he can secure from the ,indian chiefs4 ,he settles family quarrels1 neighborhood disputes1 complaints against ,indians by neighboring whites1 questions of the boundary of lands and the ownership of property4 ,he receives acknowledgments of deeds1 executes contracts1 administers estates and takes depositions4 ,crimes of all degrees1 from petty theft to murder or arson1 come under his jurisdiction1 and he is often compelled to administer punishment almost as arbitrarily as the captain of a man-of-war4 ,he is even called upon sometimes to prepare a code of laws for a tribe in an advanced state of civilization4 ,business ability and experience are indispensable qualifications4 ,the agent has to purchase miscellaneous supplies amounting to from #e1jjj to #ej1jjj annually1 on contract or in open market4 ,the opening of bids and awarding contracts on sample requires actual acquaintance with the market1 and experience in judging of the quality of goods of every variety4 ,he needs the experience and judgment of a first-class country merchant4 ,if the agent is an incompetent buyer1 contractors and merchants are quick to discover the fact and profit by it4 ,a knowledge of accounts is essential4 ,accurate returns of every item of cash and property received and expended1 are required by law1 and are subjected to most rigid scrutiny4 ,absolute correctness1 in both matter and form1 is required1 and ignorance of methods is not admitted as an excuse for errors4 ,the diplomatic qualifications of the position are by no means inconsiderable4 ,a copious official correspondence is required with the ,indian office at ,washington1 and must be conducted with due formality and dignity4 ,all matters of importance are submitted to the ,indian ,office for action1 and it often requires skilful presentation of a subject to make a clerk at ,washington take a view that seems self-evident to the agent on the frontier4 ,great tact and patience are requisite in dealing with the various outside influences that embarrass the agent1 and often bring him to grief4 ,frontier settlers are continually having difficulties with the ,indians that require attention4 ,liquor-sellers1 claim-agents and swindlers lie in wait for the ,indian1 who must be protected4 ,scheming half-breeds and 8squaw-men0 create dissension among the natives4 ,then there are the contractor and sub-contractor2 the man who failed to get the contract he wanted1 and the man who is planning to get the next contract4 ,there is the ex-agent1 who corresponds with the employs and ,indians1 and criticises his successor1 and the man who wants to be agent1 and watches for a lever to oust the incumbent4 7,there are always twenty of them67 ,there is the dissatisfied employ1 who corresponds with outsiders about agency affairs1 and the meddlesome clerk at ,washington1 who gives him private assistance4 ,the agents are few who meet all these difficulties without serious trouble4 ,especially1 high moral character is a prime requisite1 not only on account of the agent's influence upon a people just rising from barbarism1 but to enable a man to maintain his integrity under the extraordinary temptations that surround the place4 ,said an ex-agent of unimpeachable integrity3 8,i know of no service that tries a man's principles so severely as the ,indian service40 ,in spite of all precautions1 opportunities for peculation1 direct and indirect1 are frequent1 and present themselves in the most seducing forms possible4 ,having shown the requirements of the position1 we may consider some of the obstacles in the way of securing agents who are thoroughly competent for the work4 ,first comes hard work4 ,no branch of our civil service draws more heavily on a man's time and strength4 ,the agent is involved in a constant round of wearisome details1 varied only by frequent hard journeys by wagon or stage1 or worse1 by frontier railroads4 ,the responsibilities of the place are onerous4 ,the agent is held accountable1 under a heavy bond1 for all funds and property that come into his hands1 as well as for all the acts and failures of his subordinates4 ,he may be ordered away for months at a time1 on public business1 and in the meantime he must depend entirely upon the fidelity of the agency clerk1 who is not a bonded officer1 to discharge his duties and care for agency property4 ,release from bonded accountability can only be had after complying with all the forms of law and going through a long and tedious process of examination of accounts4 ,two years after closing his term of service1 an agent was required to account for one iron wagon-bolt 7purchased by a subordinate1 three years before71 in order to secure release from his bond1 and five hundred dollars arrears of salary4 ,the agent's family must endure practical exile1 separated from society1 schools and churches4 ,every agent1 honest or dishonest1 suffers in reputation4 ,if a man is thoroughly honest1 dishonest contractors and jobbers invariably slander him1 to get rid of him4 ,this consideration keeps many competent men out of the service4 ,the salary paid is entirely inadequate4 ,it is that of a country postmaster1 an army lieutenant1 a school-teacher or a traveling salesman4 ,here is the root of the whole difficulty4 ,even in the present state of the labor market1 it is impossible to get a #b1ejj man for #a1ejj4 ,the expenses of the position are high4 ,the agent keeps open house for all strangers1 newspaper correspondents1 army officers1 ,indian inspectors1 and others4 ,his family supplies are brought from a distant market1 at a heavy expense4 ,this matter has been presented to ,congress by the ,commissioner of ,indian ,affairs1 each year for several years1 but without effect4 ,in spite of these disadvantages1 the service is much better manned than might be supposed4 ,indian-,inspector ,e4 ,c4 ,watkins said to the writer3 8,i have visited a large number of agencies1 and1 in view of the meagre salary paid1 and the difficult service required1 ,i have been surprised at the capacity and fidelity displayed4 ,as a class1 the agents nominated by the religious societies perform their duties with ability and success40 ,when a thoroughly competent agent is found in the service1 one of three things will almost invariably be true3 ,either he enters the service with the idea of supplementing his salary 7honestly or dishonestly72 or he is in search of novel experience or a change of climate for himself or family2 or 7as is often true7 he has the spirit of a missionary1 and seeks the advancement of the ,indian race4 ,if we wish to escape the burden of providing for idle ,indians1 we shall have to employ competent agents1 at fair wages1 to train them to habits of industry4 99 99 99 99 99 8,,hampton ,,tracts40 ,among the excellent devices which have proceeded from the fertile brains and earnest hearts of our fellow-workers for the freedmen1 none has for a long time commended simple sanitary tracts and leaflets1 intended for use in schools and families4 ,following this excellent example1 an editing committee1 consisting of ,general ,armstrong1 his sister-in-law1 ,mrs4 ,m4 ,f4 ,armstrong1 ,miss ,ludlow and ,dr4 ,stephen ,smith1 of ,new ,york1 propose1 and have already begun1 the same good work4 ,they say-- 8,these publications will provide as simply and in as attractive a manner as possible1 carefully prepared information upon all points directly connected with physical life1 as1 cleanliness of the person and house1 ventilation1 drainage1 care of children and invalids preparation of food1 etc41 and1 as in the case of their ,english forerunners1 they are to be sold for a sum just sufficient to defray the cost of publication and to permit a certain amount of gratuitous distribution4 ,they will be issued in a series1 printed at the office of the ,normal ,school ,press1 ,hampton1 ,va41 and will be known as #8,hampton ,tracts4'0 ,the need and use of such information among the homes and families of the ,southern negroes is most apparent1 though by no means confined to them4 ,it is in their midst1 doubtless1 that they will first be distributed4 ,the ,american ,social ,science ,association1 convened in ,cleveland this year1 having examined the first three numbers of the proposed series of tracts in manuscript1 by a unanimous vote passed the following ,resolution-- 8,resolved1 ,that the ,american ,social ,science ,association learns with pleasure of the work undertaken at ,hampton1 in ,virginia1 to spread among the people of ,virginia1 and of the ,south in general1 a knowledge of ,sanitary ,science popularly set forth2 and that from an examination of the three ,sanitary ,tracts of the proposed series1 viz43 ,the ,health ,laws of ,moses1 ,the ,duty of ,teachers1 and ,preventable ,diseases1 the ,executive ,committee of this ,association is persuaded that the important task1 thus undertaken1 will be well performed4 ,we would1 therefore1 commend these ,tracts to all readers1 at the ,north as well as at the ,south1 and would recommend their wide distribution in the way best suited to promote the circulation of them40 ,again1 we desire to express our cordial commendation of the plan1 and doubt not it will be carried out in all its details with wisdom and energy4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,congregationalism ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,that ,god holds the denomination which stands as the constituency of the ,american ,missionary ,association to a large measure of duty in this line1 is evident from the fact that by ,his providence ,he had been preparing this instrumentality against the day of freedom1 and that ,he has given it now so wide and effectual a door of entrance4 ,at first it entered with physical relief2 then with the very first school that was opened among the 8contrabands02 then with its system of ,normal schools and colleges and professional departments and church organizations4 ,all this was the drift and drive of ,providence4 ,to have halted anywhere up to this point would have been to disobey marching orders4 ,and now can anything but the spirit of desertion fail to hear the command ringing on3 ,go2 go1 out-growth of this scheme for the elevation of the emancipated race4 ,as in the ,interior and in all the ,west1 these ideas and institutions have been a leavening force1 so will they be at the ,south1 interpenetrating and uplifting4 ,they will be an example1 a stimulus4 ,they will help other communions4 ,already1 our institutions have put not a few educated preachers into the pulpits of the ,methodist and ,baptist colored churches2 and we are glad thus to help in their work4 8,expository preaching1 with warm application10 says ,col4 ,preston1 8should be the preacher's mode40 ,our church ,sears's annual report were the following3 ,the year just brought to a close has been one of unusual pecuniary embarrassment to all the schools of the ,south4 ,while every branch of the department of education has been affected by it1 that relating to the employment of teachers has suffered most4 ,notwithstanding these discouraging circumstances1 the schools in most of the ,states1 instead of deteriorating1 have advanced in almost every respect4 ,the attendance was never so great2 the interest of the people never so general4 ,an approximation1 near or remote1 in the great mass of teachers1 to the standard of those professionally educated1 has been effected1 sometimes by county organizations1 under ,state supervision2 sometimes by bringing together teachers from all the counties of a ,congressional district2 and1 in one instance1 by assembling the teachers of a whole ,state to receive instruction for a period of six weeks4 ,this is a new feature in the school operations of the ,southern ,states1 and is now more rapidly revolutionizing modes of instruction than any other measure that has been tried4 ,no part of the funds at our disposal has produced greater or better results than that contributed to this object4 ,the scholarships established last year have had an excellent effect4 ,those given to the ,new ,orleans ,normal ,school1 in amounts of #aej each1 were used for the benefit of pupils from the country parishes4 ,they were ten in number4 ,those of the ,nashville ,normal ,college1 of #bjj each1 were for pupils from beyond the limits of ,tennessee4 ,the number of children and #fe1jdc colored were enrolled in the public schools1 amounting to #bjd1igd1 or somewhat less than one-half4 ,the average daily attendance was only #aag1hdc4 ,the current expenses for the public schools and school officers were #idi1gba2 and for permanent improvements in real estate1 houses and furniture1 #ajj1fbe4 ,although the current expenses were reduced #cf1jjj1 the school work was increased1 and the number of pupils was #e1jjj greater than the year before4 ,it is well known that the ,state is largely in debt2 and the courts have decided that the school fund may be used for meagre ,state tax is the sole reliance for the support of schools1 they will inevitably languish4 ,double the amount of money now raised would be a scanty supply4 ,the organization of boards of the public schools--about #d1jjj over the number reported the previous year4 ,there is an improvement also in the quality of teachers1 in the average length of school terms1 and in the interest taken by the people4 ,few well-graded and well-taught schools are to be found in ,alabama4 ,the number of children of school age1 in #ahgg1 was #cfi1ddg2 the number enrolled in the public schools1 #ada1bcj1 about three-fifths of whom were white4 ,the school expenditures for teachers and superintendents were #chd1iic4 ,in ,mississippi1 the ,superintendent regards the situation as hopeful and encouraging4 ,the statistics are very imperfect1 as only sixty-five of the seventy-five counties made any report4 ,these give #afj1ebh as the number of children in school1 and #dha1bea as the amount of money expended4 ,the enumeration of persons of school age1 giving the number of #cbd1ihi1 is said to 8fall far short of the actual number40 ,in ,louisiana there has been a period of careful re-organization of the public school system1 rather than of marked success in achieving decided results in the educational work of the ,state4 ,the loss of the interest on the trust fund for the year1 by an unconstitutional act of the ,legislature1 and the failure to collect much over half of the #ejj1jjj appropriated by the ,state1 proved very prejudicial to the country districts1 where the number of colored children required a much larger number of schools4 ,in the parishes reported1 the aggregate attendance of white children was #af1jdb1 and of colored children1 #ag1eaa4 ,there are about #bj1jjj amount of school money during the year was #gah1dbc1 which is #abj1caa less than that of the year preceding4 ,notwithstanding this diminution of funds1 the number of schools was increased by #hjg1 and that of teachers by #gia4 ,west ,virginia is one of the least fluctuating of the ,southern ,states in regard to education1 and its history is that of a slow but steady growth4 ,the number of persons of school age1 or from six to twenty-one years1 for the year #ahgg1 was #aib1fjf1 being an increase over the previous year of #g1haj4 ,of these1 #abe1ccb actually attended school1 being a numerical latter was a mere wreck1 having been covered with bamboo1 which was completely rotten4 ,this allowed the rain to pass through1 which hastened its ruin4 ,as we desired to open school and at once proceed to work1 we were compelled to repair it4 ,as one of our first duties1 the whole building was made anew1 and also enlarged at a cost of about #ajj4 ,the chapel1 too1 was in a similar state1 although it was covered with boards and tin4 ,the school was held in this during the time of repairing the school-building4 ,as soon as this was completed we proceeded to the repairing of the chapel4 ,from this we went to the mission-house1 which we found to need more repairs than we could possibly make before the rains fully set in4 ,the first work was to begin the covering of this1 that the building1 with its contents1 might be protected during the rains1 though we were interrupted frequently1 being called to the repairing of the floor1 which was fast decaying4 ,we could not cover the whole of the building before the rains had fully set in4 ,the remainder of the roof was patched so that it might serve through this season4 ,since the rains commenced some internal repairs have been made4 ,we recommend that the remainder of this building be covered as soon as the weather will permit1 and that all or a greater part of it be painted4 ,we have also been trying to enclose the premises1 but under much difficulty4 ,this is very much needed1 that cattle roaming about may be kept out4 ,at ,avery we found three buildings1 namely1 the mission-house1 chapel1 freight-house2 in addition to these a mill-shed1 the three former in good condition4 ,adjacent to the house is an ell built for a kitchen1 bath-house and store4 ,under the chapel is a room for a school2 adjacent to this is another room1 used both for school and sewing-room4 ,also1 at the freight-house is a shed-extension used as a lumber wharf4 ,the mill is in a decaying condition1 the greater part of it being covered with bamboo1 which was rotten1 and allowed the rains to pass through1 greatly to the injury of the frame-work and the mill apparatus generally4 ,repairs have been made on this roof more or less ever since our coming on the field4 ,still1 we regret to say that this work is not as yet completed4 ,repairs have also been made on the under part of the shed1 a water-trunk1 saw-lever1 etc41 teachers' home--a structure enclosed with rough boards--three rooms and a bamboo roof4 ,this roof1 like most others on the field1 was almost worthless4 ,it has been re-covered1 and is used at present for school purposes4 ,previous to our coming on the field1 a country building had been erected for a chapel and school1 which for want of attention had gone to decay4 ,if this work is to be continued1 it is quite necessary that a better building be erected for the same purposes1 so that the persons teaching and carrying on the religious work there1 may have the use of the house and reside upon the field4 ,each of the above stations has one or more country buildings erected for different purposes4 ,we submit all to your consideration4 ,the ,report of ,committee on ,agricultural ,work4 ,your committee on agricultural work beg leave to say that at ,good ,hope1 according to records left at this station1 there are four hundred acres of land under the control of the ,mendi ,mission1 some of which we think might be very profitably put under cultivation4 ,but we regret to say that we have no means other than hoes and cutlasses to begin such a work4 ,it was our purpose on entering the field to do something in this direction4 ,therefore we began to clear the land1 turning over some with hoes2 but as the premises were not enclosed1 and cattle were roaming over them1 it was impossible for us to plant to any advantage4 ,therefore the first part of our work had to be abandoned1 and we are giving our attention to the fencing of the premises1 with a view to doing something in the agricultural work at the opening of the next season4 ,the records show that a hundred and sixty acres of land are under control of our mission1 at ,avery4 ,about eight of these are cleared off1 including yard4 ,three hundred and six coffee-trees are growing on said land4 ,the trees are not in a very promising condition1 and we are unable to say as yet what the result will be4 ,the land is very hilly1 yet a small portion of it might be utilized to some profit1 but must first be cleared4 ,all such work will necessitate an additional expense1 the returns of which we need not expect to realize very soon1 yet will tend to advance civilization4 ,report of ,committee on ,church ,work4 ,your committee on church work beg leave to submit to you the following report4 ,we regret to say that on entering the work at ,good ,hope ,station1 we found the church abandoned1 the doors having been closed for months1 since the death of the ,rev4 ,barnabas ,root4 ,many of the members had united with the ,church ,mission ,society4 ,we re-organized with as much of the old element as willingly returned1 and set to persuading others who knew not ,christ to come into the fold1 and we rejoice to say that our efforts have been blessed4 ,twenty-two new converts have been added1 mostly from among the pupils of the mission1 and some who serve as laborers2 nearly all from the native element1 whose eyes have been opened to the truth as it is in ,christ ,jesus1 and have learned to love ,him4 ,now our number of regular members is forty-four4 ,in addition to these we have baptized ten children4 ,our church is in a healthy condition1 and attended mostly by a native element1 preached to through an interpreter4 ,the attendance is good1 and at times our accommodations are not sufficient4 ,we hope soon to see many others coming into the kingdom4 ,we have also organized a ,literary ,society1 which adds greatly to the interest of our work4 ,this meets the first and second ,fridays in each month1 in our chapel4 ,but like all other departments of our work1 this is greatly retarded by continued rains4 ,we hope to redeem the time when the dry season sets in again4 ,our hours of conducting services at ,good ,hope ,station are1 on the ,sabbath1 preaching at #aa ,a4 ,m41 ,sunday-school at #c ,p4 ,m41 and prayer-meeting or preaching at #g ,p4 ,m4 ,we have also a prayer-meeting ,wednesday evening1 and one every morning1 very early1 for the benefit of laborers and natives generally4 ,at ,mannah ,bargroo ,station1 or ,avery1 we have a new chapel1 which has been opened since our coming to the field4 ,meetings were conducted in the first part of the year by ,bro's ,james and ,white4 ,the people became more and more interested in these meetings4 ,since the arrival of the new missionaries1 ,rev4 ,a4 ,e4 ,jackson has been put in charge of that work1 and regular preaching services1 together with prayer-meetings1 have been kept up4 ,a number of the old members from ,good ,hope ,church1 and those who have been converted1 have been brought together1 their names enrolled1 and other preparations made1 looking forward to an early organization1 which1 we hope1 will take place as soon as the weather will allow4 ,seven adults have been baptized and four children4 ,the whole number enrolled is thirty4 ,there is great interest manifested among others whom we hope soon to see converted4 ,we have preaching services at eleven ,a4 ,m41 ,sunday-school at two ,p4 ,m41 prayer-meeting at seven ,p4 ,m4 ,also a ,thursday evening prayer-meeting4 ,there is a preaching station outside the mission4 ,report of ,committee on ,school ,work4 ,your committee on school work beg leave to report to the members of the ,board of ,counsel and ,advice1 the progressive state of the schools both at ,good ,hope and ,avery1 under the existing circumstances4 ,the progress of the schools is wonderful when compared with the chances of the scholars4 ,the advantages have been poor1 as we have been trying to fight without arms for the last nine months4 ,we have been1 and are now1 almost altogether without books1 which not only discourages teachers and pupils1 but is also a great loss to the scholars and the general work4 ,provision was made for a supply of books from ,england1 but a misunderstanding led to delay2 the books have since been sent from this country4--,,ed4 ,as time with missionaries is something in ,africa1 where so much darkness prevails1 we lay before you the real needs of our schools4 ,many of our scholars attend school with only a handkerchief as a garment1 tied around their necks1 hanging somewhat cloak-fashion4 ,school is taught at ,debia4 ,the prospect does not seem very hopeful1 yet more so than at any time previous4 ,the people are very poor1 and are not able to supply the wants of their children4 ,a larger number could be brought in if we were to aid them a little4 ,this1 we hope1 we shall be able to do1 to some extent1 in future1 as we trust we shall be so advised by the committee at ,new ,york4 ,the ,sunday-schools1 no small factor in our work1 are in a flourishing condition4 ,we stand in great need of ,sunday-school books1 papers1 mottoes1 etc41 which1 we hope1 will soon be supplied us4 ,our aim is to train up young men and young women1 who may go forth into this broad continent1 and carry the light to those benighted ones whom we are unable to reach4 ,therefore1 we recommend to this body the importance of establishing1 at whatever station in their judgment seems best1 a ,high ,school for the purpose of training up persons to be missionaries to the dying millions in the interior1 with hope of the approval of the ,executive ,committee at ,new ,york4 ,on ,reception of ,scholars at the ,stations4 ,the ,board resolved itself into a ,committee of the whole to discuss this question1 after which the following resolution was unanimously adopted3 ,resolved3 ,that experience has convinced us that it is absolutely necessary to keep a ,boarding ,department1 to some extent1 at each of the stations1 viz41 ,good ,hope1 ,avery and ,debia4 7#a7 ,because the people are unable to continue their scholars in school as necessity demands1 to fit them for missionary work as suggested by the ,executive ,committee4 7#b7 ,the people on the whole are not sufficiently acquainted with the benefits of an education to compel the attendance of their children1 even if they were able4 7#c7 ,we can never train up persons to serve as assistants in missionary work without taking them from under the unwholesome influence of their parents1 and placing them under ,christian influence4 7#d7 ,therefore1 seeing the difficulties which exist from having to receive the material upon which we are to work sent us at the will of the parents1 we recommend to the ,committee at ,new ,york that each station be allowed to retain as many scholars as can be well provided for4 ,we submit this to your weighty consideration4 ,extension of ,mission-,work was discussed by the ,board4 ,this is a question of great importance1 and to carry our views into effect1 will necessarily require a large sum of money4 ,we regret to say that from the outset we have been greatly embarrassed1 in attempting to extend our work1 because of the want of means with which to do it4 ,and we are no more encouraged now1 from the fact that we are continually being instructed by the ,committee that the means are short1 and we must curtail expenses4 ,at present we have not a dollar to do this1 and we are unable to tell when we shall have4 ,in our view1 there are many places which could be opened and worked up with great success4 ,but our present situation forbids any attempt4 ,we hope the change may be such soon that we shall be able to do something in this direction1 as we consider this to be one of the purposes for which we were sent out4 ,,rev4 ,a4 ,p4 ,,miller1 ,sec4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians4 99 99 99 99 99 in preparing the bread of life for this people1 or in preparing them to receive it4 ,first comes the article itself2 we have been furnishing them with it to make wholesome bread4 ,their ,indian way of preparing flour1 is to fry soggy dough in a panful of grease over a fire made of sticks in the centre of the lodge4 ,any one who goes back with longing memories to the old days of open fireplace cookery1 may enjoy it to his heart's content without the least contamination with modern conveniences in1 a ,ree or ,gros ,ventres or ,mandan earth-covered lodge in this place1 a journey of only two or three days by railroad and steamboat from ,minneapolis4 ,the ,indians1 however1 take kindly to cooking-stoves when our 8,uncle0 furnishes them2 and we are trying1 as the first requisite of household health1 to teach them to make good bread4 ,our first step was to create a desire for it1 by giving them good bread4 ,but the preference for 8white man's bread0 has been created1 and the cry for yeast to make it has been daily heard at our door this summer4 ,lately1 we have said1 8no more yeast10 but 8go and pick hops1 and we will teach you how to make yeast02 and specimens of gathered hops are exhibited4 ,it is a great gain to have the people eating wholesome food1 for the want of which1 in their changed condition of life1 and the absence of the former abundance of game1 they are dying off4 ,it is greater gain to have them beginning in any way to make home more comfortable1 attractive1 decent2 to have the women improving in cooking1 and tidiness of home management2 the men drawn to an interest in building better houses2 the family to have an ambition for doors and windows and bedsteads1 and cups and saucers and tables1 and cupboards made of old boxes with calico curtains4 ,but chiefly is it gain to get through such work the confidence and the hearts of the people1 that we may lead them to ,christ2 and if yeast will set the leaven at work by which we may leaven the whole lump1 we say1 ,amen6 ,flowers4 ,we have not limited ourselves to yeast4 ,on ,friday afternoons we have given the children who attended regularly1 a good meal at a table1 with all the accessories of a ,christian board1 including grace4 ,other little means of attracting the people to higher things have been beautiful clusters of scarlet blossoms1 blooming all the season on the fence1 and handsome dahlias and zinnias and four o'clocks1 by the house4 ,groups of little ,indians stand open-mouthed before them1 or some old woman1 with her willow-basket full of corn or squashes on her back1 is attracted and cheered by these beauties--gifts of ,god's love4 ,that they do notice the flowers at all is a hopeful sign4 ,early in the spring1 ,i picked a bluebell1 and spoke of its beauty to an ,indian man who was helping me set fence posts4 ,he said1 with a scornful expression at my ignorance3 8,that isn't anything1 it isn't good to eat40 ,farming4 ,then they study our garden1 with its variety of different vegetables and roots1 and its young trees4 ,they are doing well at agriculture--better than most ,indians in the territory of ,dakota4 ,this year their crops of corn1 potatoes1 squashes and beans are large and fine2 but they raise nothing else2 and they have not learned to care for stock1 to milk1 to make butter1 and grow feed for cattle4 ,they do not put up hay for their ponies1 but let them grow poor during the winter1 on such dried grass1 and corn-stalks1 and cotton-wood bark as they can pick up on the prairie or the bottoms by the ,missouri4 ,they are not of much value in harness1 but are one with their rider1 and endure fatigue and hunger with him marvellously4 ,they think ,i ought to keep a horse4 ,i tell them my cow gives milk and butter1 and their horses don't4 ,so they look on at our methods of life1 and see their superiority2 and gradually want to copy them4 ,death4 ,we have striven to open the way for the ,gospel by sympathy with1 and help for1 the sick and dying4 ,one young man among the ,mandans died last year as ,i stood beside him4 ,before he grew unconscious1 he had said to his friend that the white people were coming for him1 and he was going4 ,perhaps some revelation of heaven and ,god's love came to him in that shape4 ,there was a woman once who touched only the hem of a garment4 ,there is ,one who does not quench the smoking flax4 ,another poor consumptive died this spring1 telling her people not to believe what bad ,indians said about our malign influences2 that we were good2 that if she got well she would come to church2 that father and mother must not grieve for her1 but1 if they felt sad1 go to us to be comforted4 ,god has been teaching us how to comfort bereaved parents and friends by taking away our own baby1 ,harry1 to the home over there4 ,an atmosphere of sorrow is about all our ,dakota mission-stations4 ,mrs4 ,thomas ,riggs has been suddenly taken from a useful1 active life1 near ,fort ,sully1 ,d4 ,t41 and lies buried on her field of work2 and ,mrs4 ,renville is taken from the ,flandreau people1 and ,miss ,williamson from the ,yankton people4 ,but 8sorrow is the atmosphere that ripens hearts for heaven10 and1 ripe for heaven1 they are best for earthly usefulness also4 ,conversions4 ,the white employs and white men living among the ,indians were all interested this spring1 and we hope there were several conversions and much good influence at work4 ,one young man1 born of missionary parents in the ,south ,seas1 who had wandered here from ,england and from the ,lord1 we trust has gone back home to live a better life4 ,one man1 with a half-breed family1 said3 8,the white people have been teaching the ,indians better ways of living2 then you have had school1 a good school1 and now we are going to have church and religion1 and do better40 ,god grant it1 but we have to sow and wait1 and wait4 ,our seasons are short1 our spiritual zone northern4 ,yet ,god will conquer6 ,from ,devil's ,lake three or four days' hard travel across the prairies to the north-east1 there came a word of cheer in the early summer4 ,some1 especially one man who had been under missionary influence in the ,southern part of our ,territory1 but apparently cared for none of these things1 came to see us1 and to sympathize with us in our loss 7he had lost children71 and to get what help he could from us in understanding his ,bible1 and teaching his friends to read4 ,he went away with the urgent request that we come to ,devil's ,lake and preach to them4 ,devil's ,lake is a ,roman ,catholic agency1 and they do not preach to them in their own tongue4 ,one thing is certain3 if the sons are to talk ,english to us1 we must preach in the ,indian tongue to the fathers4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,lake ,,superior ,,agency4 ,i4 ,l4 ,,mahan1 ,,agent1 ,,bayfield1 ,,wis4 ,a ,merciful ,man1 etc4 ,i am glad to report the following1 as one of quite a number of instances that have come within my own knowledge4 ,last fall1 in obedience to the request of twelve of my ,indians1 ,i estimated for twelve cows and calves1 but received only eight4 ,in consequence of this failure1 four of my people were disappointed1 after having harvested1 at their own expense1 a sufficient amount of food to supply the cattle during the winter 7by no means an easy undertaking for an ,indian74 ,the disappointed ones1 however1 took the ill luck philosophically1 and made the best of the disappointment4 ,they earnestly besought me to try again1 and1 if possible1 get the cows and calves4 ,i did try1 and secured each of the four a good cow and calf1 for which they each worked upon their own #hjs in clearing1 etc41 under the direction of the ,government farmer1 thirty-eight days1 and received each a cow and calf1 and drove them to their houses4 ,a few weeks after1 a report came to me that ,henry ,buffalo was sadly neglecting his cow and calf2 that he had secured each to a stake1 driven in the ground for the purpose1 and had taken his family on a visit to an adjoining settlement1 a few miles away1 leaving the cow and calf without food to eat or water to drink for days at a time4 ,this1 to me1 seemed terrible treatment1 and ,i set myself about an investigation1 and found that1 upon the occasion above referred to1 the ,indians in the vicinity had all gone to attend church service some miles distant1 they having word of the coming of a favorite priest4 ,friends had advised the stake arrangement--the fences not being considered strong--and made preparations for ,henry1 in order to induce him to go4 ,he started1 but looking back1 took pity upon the dumb brute1 and returned and remained at home all day1 feeding and watering his cow and calf1 and using an evergreen brush to keep the flies off4 ,the report was founded upon the fact that his house was locked up4 ,such care and sympathy is worthy of reward4 ,an ,industrious ,builder4 ,the other day an ,indian applied to me for lumber and nails to finish his barn1 that he might have a floor to thresh his grain upon4 ,the lumber and nails were furnished him1 and1 on inquiry1 ,i learned that he had stripped a sufficient number of cedar trees of bark to cover his barn2 and not having horses or cattle1 had transported it in a small boat1 upon the lake1 to the nearest point toward his house1 and then packed it upon his back one and a half miles4 ,do you say such zealous and fatiguing labor does not deserve its reward8 ,smart ,surveying4 ,the ,lac ,courte ,d',oreille reservation is located in the north-west corner of ,chippewa county1 near the intersection of ,ashland and ,burnett counties4 ,it was selected1 undoubtedly1 for the timber1 although some very fine farming-land has been found4 ,the ,indians made choice of this region of country on account of the very fine groves of sugar-maple and the large number of inland lakes2 but the white man1 who defines the boundaries1 took occasion to so run the lines that the most of the maple-groves and many of the lakes are left out1 and the ,indians have a reservation running from south-west to north-west about thirty miles1 and from north-west to south-east but about three or four miles4 ,upon this reservation we have made #afj allotments of eighty acres to individuals1 and many good farms have been opened without very much encouragement from the ,department1 as the ,indians long for their patents1 as in the case of ,red ,cliff and ,bad ,river4 ,in passing up the ,lac ,courte ,d',oreille ,river1 ,i found five new log-houses1 and1 in one case1 about ten acres cleared1 and all planted4 ,there are perhaps twenty or twenty-five other houses1 that have been built by ,indians without any individual aid from ,government4 ,they have improved the roads across the reservation4 ,they have some stock1 but are sadly in need of more4 ,no ,civilizing ,measures4 ,belonging to the ,lac du ,flambeau reserve are #edb ,indians1 who live almost entirely by trapping1 hunting and fishing4 ,they are rovers in every sense of the word1 having no houses or permanent homes1 save the starry-decked heavens4 ,they are visited each year by the ,agent2 and such goods and supplies as the ,department furnishes are distributed to them as presents4 ,the appropriations are not large enough to supply employs2 therefore1 no civilizing measures have been introduced here4 ,five thousand dollars a year1 judiciously expended for labor1 in building houses1 clearing land1 and supplying cattle to these ,indians1 would1 in a very short period1 place them beyond want2 while the present policy--of leaving them to their own inclinations--will make a class of miserable paupers1 without knowledge or disposition to be anything else2 and the ,state will sooner or later be called upon to step in between the ,indians and the general ,government1 and exercise some of its ,christian charities4 ,these ,indians must be aided1 or they are lost beyond redemption4 ,a ,farmer on a ,rock4 ,the ,bois ,forte bands1 numbering #gig ,indians1 have a reservation of #ajg1eji acres1 lying in unsurveyed territory1 about forty miles north-west of ,vermillion ,lake1 in ,minnesota4 ,they have mingled with the whites but little2 therefore have but few of their vices4 ,they roam1 fish1 hunt and trap for a livelihood4 ,they dress in civilized costumes1 and a few of them sow and plant and harvest1 live in houses1 and have some of the ordinary home comforts2 but they are few indeed4 ,they have been banished to perhaps the most wretched of all lands1 or rock1 in ,north ,minnesota4 ,their treaty stipulates that a farmer shall be provided4 ,a farmer6 ,think of it--on such a rock6 ,the explorers report not a spot upon which to plant a potato4 ,there is not a road within forty miles of the reservation4 ,the treaty is rapidly passing away--half gone2 soon they will have nothing left4 ,we would most earnestly renew our recommendation of last year1 that about #a1jjj acres of land on the south side of ,vermillion ,lake1 be set aside for agricultural and educational purposes1 and that the ,bois ,forte ,indians be induced to select homes and settle thereon2 that the boundary be defined1 and that the employs be permanently located4 ,schools4 ,our schools have been well attended4 ,books for more advanced scholarship have been a constant demand1 and the statistics from teachers and farmers show a gradual improvement4 ,the free-lunch system at ,red ,cliff and ,bad ,river has been continued all year1 and is1 without doubt1 the most successful medium through which to reach poor and hungry children4 ,the ,wisconsin ,scare1 as it is called1 might have reached immense proportions had not the officers of the ,indian ,bureau taken a firm stand against the possibility of such a thing as an ,indian outbreak among the ,chippewas4 ,the ,chippewas have grievances that would make white men tear their hair and howl from one end of the country to the other2 but they prefer to submit quietly and peaceably to the powers that be1 praying without ceasing1 hoping continually that the good men of the ,great ,father's household will yet hear and answer their petitions by the necessary legislations4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,red ,,lake ,,agency1 ,,minnesota4 ,school1 ,church1 ,farm1 ,mill1 etc4 ,c4 ,p4 ,,allen1 ,m4 ,d4 ,this reservation embraces about and prepare fuel1 to plow1 plant1 grub1 do fence and farm work4 ,in addition to the twenty boarding pupils1 there were some twenty day-scholars1 so that the present capacity of the school is filled4 ,the results are very gratifying4 ,the missionary work has been under the auspices of the ,protestant ,episcopal ,mission1 who sent last year two native clergymen to labor here2 one died in ,september1 #ahgg4 ,this year1 three others have been sent to labor here and across the ,lake1 where no missionary work has been done1 and where the ,indians oppose any work of the kind4 ,a church stoves1 tables1 chairs1 crockery1 better clothing1 greater cleanliness1 more wash-boards and wash-tubs in use1 more comfortable homes2 more stock each year2 a growing desire to have their children educated2 more knitting and sewing done than formerly4 ,owing to a general lack of snow and water1 less has been accomplished this season than usual in the way of building houses1 as we had little lumber to build with1 although logs were cut1 preparatory to driving to mill1 to the amount of over #ajj1jjj feet4 ,arrangements are about completed for putting in here a substantial little flour-mill this fall1 to convert their wheat into nice flour4 ,this will prove a great incentive to increased labor in clearing up land and raising more wheat4 ,this again1 will conduce to improved health1 as much of their sickness arises from insufficient food1 and that of poor quality4 ,during the last year a new source of revenue has been developed1 which is ,senega root4 ,of this1 they have dug nearly expulsion on similar grounds1 and with equally cogent reasons1 in the bygone4 ,it will be well for him to recall the fact2 for when once the principle of discrimination is incorporated into the policy of the nation1 the bolt that hits ,john to-day may chance to strike some one else to-morrow4 ,when caste and caprice usurp the place of justice and humanity1 every man will thenceforth hold life1 liberty and property by sufferance of the mob4 ,it is natural to the weak side of public men1 to court the voters' favor4 ,not many politicians are tall enough to look over the heads of stump orators and bannered agitators4 ,has the good ,god no taller men to send us for these agitated times8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,an ,,old-,,time ,,prayer ,,meeting4 ,among the many things which ,i have observed is the singular form of worship which the colored people practice here4 ,while at ,hampton last term1 ,i read ,livingstone's book about ,africa4 ,some of the religious customs related in that volume have certainly been brought over by our forefathers1 and are in this enlightened land found mingled with the true religion4 ,the great belief which our people have in conjuration1 7or 8throwing for each other10 as they call it7 signs1 and the returning of departed spirits1 confirm the above opinion4 ,not long ago ,i went to one of their meetings4 ,it was held in a little church about twenty-two or twenty-three feet long1 and twelve feet wide1 with three windows1 which have shutters of plank1 through which1 when shut1 little or no air can pass4 ,in the middle of the floor sits a large stove in which a very hot fire was kept during the meeting4 ,the preacher was to have come that night1 but for some reason he disappointed them4 ,his absence1 however1 did not prevent their having an 8,old-time prayer-meeting10 as they call it4 ,so1 after waiting for some time for their pastor to arrive1 they commenced the meeting by singing a hymn1 given out by one called 8the leader of the band40 ,prayer and a short exhortation came next4 ,indeed1 these two parts of the opening exercises were well performed by a young man4 ,but1 in the scene which followed his excellent prayer and advice1 he 7though somewhat intelligent7 was one of the chief actors4 ,one or two more hymns were sung from the hymn-book4 ,i heard some of the women say3 8,if those men don't stop singing those dry tunes we'll take our bonnets and go home40 ,by the women ceasing to sing1 the men discovered that there was something going wrong4 ,the 8leader of the band0 seems to have seen at a moment's glance what caused the commotion1 and immediately struck up the well-known 8,i1 ,john1 ,saw40 ,the women now joined in2 and the woods and hills rang with the resounding melodies of that music which has never known a teacher1 but yet is wonderful and almost sublime4 ,while this 8shout0 was being sung the men and women gathered around the stove1 the men on one side and the women on the other4 ,the church by this time had become full of people4 ,one could not kneel down without leaning on some one else4 ,all three of the windows were shut1 and the shutters closed4 ,a fire was in the stove4 ,soon a sickening feeling came over me1 caused by the impure air which pervaded the place4 ,i asked one who was standing near the window to please open it4 8,you want us to freeze1 don't you80 said he4 ,i looked up1 and1 to my great satisfaction1 found that the roof was full of holes1 and ,i knew that hot air rises1 so ,i said no more to the man about the window4 ,the 8leader0 had now become too warm it seemed1 for while we were at prayers he took off his coat and rolled up his sleeves1 exclaiming at the same time1 8,get ready1 children1 we are going to drive out the devil to-night60 ,the others1 as soon as they saw him without a coat1 immediately disrobed themselves of theirs4 ,had ,i expected to see such heathenism ,i am sure ,i would not have gone to the meeting4 ,after this there came a tumult and excitement--women jumping among the men1 men holding each other2 some of the young girls uttering screams which really could have been heard a mile2 and some tearing their clothes off without regard to womanly modesty4 ,but what discouraged me most was to find among this seething mass some of my school-children4 ,after the meeting was over1 and all on our way home1 a shameful fight came off between two of the leading shouters 7females71 about something which had been said during the meeting4 ,what shall ,i say1 having seen such degrading things with my own eyes1 7and ,i have not told the worst74 ,all ,i can say is this3 ,let us work on with our might1 and hope for better things4 8,for if ,god be for us1 who can be against us80 --,student's letter in
