#ic1bcb4ii to #fb1haf4ij4 ,this year we have received to ,september #a1 in cash1 #ad1ajh4bb1 and in pledges 7partly conditioned7 #g1eej1 making #ba1feh4bb1 thus reducing the amount--if the pledges are ,,catholics ,,among ,,the ,,freedmen4 ,the ,independent closes a careful and1 in the main1 accurate summary of the work of ,christian education among the negroes1 with a view of what the ,roman ,catholics are doing4 ,after speaking of the large estimates of money expended1 and pupils taught by that church1 it says3 8,nothing approaching a confirmation of these estimates has been brought to our notice4 ,we have carefully examined the ,roman ,catholic papers with reference to this subject for a year past1 and have been able to glean from them only the most barren record of facts and isolated movements4444 ,we believe that1 if the ,roman ,catholics really had facts to prove that they have made the progress they claim to have made1 they would not hesitate to publish them conspicuously4 ,as they fail to produce them1 we are contented to believe1 for the present1 that they are doing no more than their fair share of the work1 if so much1 and receiving no more than their share of the conversions40 ,in a later issue1 the same paper says3 8,we are glad to have been able to capture and expose the spectre which has been frightening ,protestants so much4 ,we mean the wholesale conversion of negroes to ,catholicism4 ,in a recent article in our #8,religious ,intelligence' we gave all the information we could gather about the extent and results of ,catholic missions among the freedmen1 and there was nothing in it to alarm or annoy anybody4 ,the ,catholic ,review quotes liberally from the article1 and virtually concedes the accuracy of our statements in the following sentences3 8#8,like our contemporary1 we have noticed the 8extravagant estimates0 to which it refers2 but we never happened to notice their having been made by any ,catholic authority whatever4 ,they usually make their appearance in papers of the ,christian ,advocate stamp1 and are employed as a stimulus to rouse missionary zeal in people who are much more readily moved to give money by their hatred of ,popery than by their love for what they believe to be the truth taught by our ,divine ,lord4 ,the ,independent wants facts to substantiate these boastings4 ,we suggest that it can always be accommodated with facts enough to substantiate the truth of whatever assertions are actually made by our missionaries4 ,they can hardly be held responsible for any wild stories which other people may circulate at their expense4' 8,those who have been most troubled by reports of the gains of ,catholicism among the negroes may give to the winds their fears40 ,we1 too1 have been for more than a year making special inquiries4 ,we have read the large estimates1 which have been through the newspapers1 of money expended1 and pupils taught4 ,the statement that #fjj1jjj in gold 7nearly one million dollars in our currency7 was given to this work by the ,propaganda at ,rome1 in #ahfg1 and that1 in the same year1 sixty-six priests landed in ,new ,orleans to undertake missionary work among the blacks1 we trace to the ,christian ,intelligencer of that year4 ,the fact is1 that it is extremely difficult to get at accurate and authorized statements in regard to all ,roman ,catholic missions4 ,their funds are not raised by appeals1 based on special needs or special encouragements1 or addressed to the general public2 and their policy is one of quiet foundation-laying1 rather than of demonstrative up-building4 ,it is not an easy task1 even1 to secure reliable information of what they are doing here at our doors1 or behind their own4 ,recognizing this difficulty1 we are not ready to agree with the ,independent that1 if the ,roman ,catholics had facts to prove1 they would not hesitate to publish them conspicuously4 ,nor are we ready yet to congratulate ourselves that we 8have been able to capture and expose the spectre10 while we are obliged to confess that we have not had it in our grasp sufficiently to take the measure of its outlines1 or tell its height and girth4 ,a careful reading of the #8virtual concession' of the ,catholic ,review makes it amount to virtually nothing1 except an ingenious evasion of responsibility for any statements which may have been made4 ,it does not even say that the estimates have been extravagant1 but uses that expression as a quotation from the ,independent4 ,it only suggests that assertions actually made by missionaries 7who are careful not to make assertions7 can always be substantiated4 ,we would merely caution the friend of the negro1 and those who fear the influence of ,romanism over him1 that an argument based on ignorance is not very securely founded4 ,and1 while we would not have omne ignotum pro magnifico1 or believe because the spectre is vague1 it must be very large2 on the other hand1 we would not say of one whose wont is to hide itself1 8,because we cannot dissect it1 it is nothing40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,yellow ,,fever4 ,the yellow fever1 in its ravages in the ,south1 pays no regard to race1 color or previous condition4 ,whites and blacks alike have suffered from its sudden and malignant attacks4 ,death levels all distinctions4 ,the statement which has been often made1 that the negroes are proof against this pestilence1 seems to have been ill-based1 as intelligent observers of its ravages in former years utterly contradict it4 ,at any rate1 it is not true of this year's scourge4 ,quite opposite assertions have been made in regard to the conduct of the blacks during the panic which this deathly visitor has occasioned4 ,so contradictory1 in fact1 that we suspect the truth to be that they have acted very much like white people of the same intelligence4 ,some have stood at their posts1 and done noble work as nurses1 as ministers1 and in humbler stations4 ,and some1 doubtless1 like those of other races1 have been carried by their fears away from the most sacred of duties4 ,how has it affected our work8 ,of course1 our schools in the ,south are closed during the hot months1 have reason to hope for his recovery and restoration to full health4 ,we have transmitted some sums of money which have been put into our hands for special relief to the suffering colored people of these infected districts1 to which we have added what we felt justified in doing from the funds of the ,association4 ,but the peril is not over yet4 ,many days must intervene before the thrice welcome frosts may be expected to kill the germs of this fell disease1 and famine always comes in the train of continued pestilence4 ,it is the ,lord's work to avert suffering and relieve physical want4 ,may advance them anything at the beginning of the season1 for fear of their running away and leaving him without hands in time of harvest2 that they were so lazy that all they cared for was to get bread and meat for the least possible amount of work2 that1 although all his hands were deacons or preachers or #8exalters1' they stole so that he could not raise any pigs or chickens2 that the members of the church were more licentious than the #8world's people'2 that they got angry and burned his gin-house every year1 etc41 etc4 ,he was the first man that ,i had met1 during a residence of nine years at the ,south1 who would admit that he was sorry the slaves had been made free4 8,on my way down the river1 at about the same point1 ,i had a conversation upon the same subject with a man residing on the other bank4 ,he was a tall gentleman of fine form1 with an intellectual1 genial1 open face4 ,in reply to my inquiries1 he said the freedmen were doing first-rate2 were industrious1 honest1 temperate and moral2 were acquiring property in stock1 tools and land2 and he found free labor more easily managed and more profitable than slave labor4 ,i referred to the conversation ,i had with his ,mississippi neighbor on my way up1 and asked him why their reports were so different4 ,with a good deal of animation and emphasis1 he replied3 #8,i can tell you why it is3 ,i just give my niggers a chance1 and he doesn't4 ,he has always brought them out in debt to him at the end of every year1 and has crushed out all their enterprise and ambition1 so that1 as he says1 the problem with them is darkness4 ,you will not lose your reward #8in my ,father's kingdom1' as ,christ says40 ,the next one which comes to hand is from ,hong ,sing1 and addressed to ,affoo4 ,it reads as follows3 8,i heard you some time ago talking about if we would like have one ,american ,association school in ,hong ,kong4 ,i feel very glad1 indeed1 if we have one school in ,hong ,kong1 that we may go back to our ,china and find a ,christian ,home4 ,canton and ,hong ,kong have two or three schools1 but not our ,congregational ,association4 ,you know how many of our ,christian brothers have gone back to ,china4 ,they find no ,christian home2 then they find very hard to be good1 and bye-and-bye feel cold with ,jesus40 ,joe ,lee and ,chin ,quong write to say3 8,i like the idea of having a ,christian school in ,hong ,kong very much1 indeed4 ,i think it will be great benefit1 not only to the ,christian boys1 but also to the poor heathen boys there40 ,chung ,sun says3 8,i very glad2 ,god very good to me4 ,i like bye-and-bye go back ,china2 tell father1 mother1 sister1 brother1 very good ,jesus4 ,if him all i4e41 his relatives no like me ,i go ,christian house1 call ,christian friend ,help me tell father1 mother1 sister1 brother1 how very good ,jesus is4 ,if all man1 woman love ,him1 bye-and-bye go heaven4 ,if he all beat and lick me1 ,i go to the ,chinese ,mission at ,hong ,kong2 very good1 all the same my own church40 ,ah ,king writes3 8,dear ,mr4 ,pond--,i am very glad in heart that ,i heard missionary schools be opened in ,hong ,kong4 ,i think you make these things for our ,christian brethren1 just like builder build a stone foundation of buildings--the wind cannot blow off it40 ,that is1 the mission work at ,hong ,kong will tend to secure the results of our work here4 ,without this1 the winds of contradiction and persecution in ,china will tend to blow our brethren who return there off the foundation4 ,perhaps these will suffice as samples1 and ,i think that all the points made in the other letters are referred to in these4 ,but the tone differs in different letters1 and the fact specially emphasized2 thus1 for example1 the chief point with one is1 8,if it mission at ,hong ,kong can be1 it can keep us doing good when we go back1 and ,i thank ,god with all my heart40 ,with another1 it is sorrow that we been without such a mission so long4 8,we plead10 he says1 8our brethren to help us4 ,i pray that ,god will bless you and open a way to make a mission in ,hong ,kong40 ,another says1 8,if men can't do it1 we all hope ,god has an authority has some way do it for us4 ,i hope our parents hear the gospel1 receive it all1 come to ,him forever40 ,a refuge from persecution is often referred to4 8,we have great many trials1 and ,i hope the ,christians do this thing1 then our brothers have a place to see each other4 ,we are far from each other in ,china40 ,i conclude with the following from ,jee ,gam1 whose name is familiar to most of our readers--the helper longest in service with us2 whose good judgment1 ,christian spirit1 and untiring zeal1 ,i have learned to greatly respect4 ,he says3 8,i was very much pleased to hear that you have written to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 requesting its permission and aid to establish a ,chinese ,mission in ,hong ,kong4 ,without attempting to add anything to what you have written1 ,i will tell you what ,ting ,ki1 the most active deacon of the ,london ,mission at ,hong ,kong1 said to me while ,i was there3 that the best way to accomplish the most good is to open a mission and a ,christian ,association similar to ours here4 ,he also said that the great need of the ,english language is now felt by most of the ,chinese in that city1 and in order to aid them1 such schools as we have here should be established4 ,this is the best way to reach them1 so as to interest them in the ,bible1 which is our chief aim4 ,as many of the people in that city are laboring people1 they could attend school better in the evening than through the day4 ,ting ,ki was very anxious to have me remain and establish such a mission-school1 and teach them the ,english language4 ,the brethren in the ,oakland school all feel as ,i do about this matter1 and they asked me to write for them1 as well as for myself40 ,i will add nothing to these expressions4 ,i confess that as ,i read them over1 they ring in my ears like the ,macedonian cry1 and ,i cannot but hope that our ,association1 hearing it1 will endeavor immediately to go into this modern ,macedonia1 8assuredly gathering that the ,lord has called us for to preach the gospel unto them40--,acts xvi1 #aj4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 ,from a ,private ,letter of a ,pastor's ,daughter on a ,visit to ,talladega ,college1 ,alabama4 ,,by blankets and pail of oats and lunch-basket in the bottom and back of the buggy4 ,then we three piled in1 stopping in the village just long enough to get some lemons4 ,we had a lovely ride--part of the way through the woods--catching glimpses of the mountains in the distance1 all along4 ,perhaps you know that ,alabama abounds in springs2 so1 whenever we go out for a drive or a picnic1 we always aim for a spring--taking a gourd with us for a cup4 ,we learned at a little town just below here that there was a fine spring a little farther on2 and here we are now right in the woods4 ,i am writing on off to see their old scholars1 and encourage them in their ,sunday-schools4 ,they do a great deal of good in this way4 ,i have visited two of these mission-schools2 and this time we came to see ,mr4 ,m41 one of the theological students who has just been ordained here at ,anniston4 ,we found him and his wife living in a neatly-painted house1 close by his little church4 ,it did me so much good to go into his home and see what it was4 ,not much like most of the colored people's houses--log-huts1 dirty1 low1 and only one room1 with so few comforts4 ,this was a house of two rooms--the front room carpeted neatly2 a nice bureau and bed in the room2 a little table with books on it 7one of which was a copy of ,shakspeare67 ,in one corner of the room was his writing desk1 with library over it--and a very good library it was2 books on ,isaiah and ,psalms2 ,gospels and ,epistles2 several1 or rather all of ,barnes' ,notes2 a book on ,moral ,philosophy1 etc4 ,i suppose that doesn't sound like much of anything to you2 but when you know how many of these people live1 and how ignorant they are1 it seems so much4 ,there were pictures on the wall1 a clock on the mantel1 shades and curtains at the windows1 etc4 ,the church has a good bell1 and is to be painted very soon4 ,we attended ,sunday-school this morning4 ,mr4 ,m4 has a little blackboard1 a review chart1 question-books1 ,gospel-hymns1 the place1 we crawl through the fence and enter the little house4 ,we find the children seated on benches made of rough boards4 ,may and ,i take our places in chairs at the head of the school4 ,sometimes we have over forty children4 ,we open the school by singing some of the ,gospel-hymns1 then follows the prayer2 after talking a minute or two to the scholars1 the teachers take their classes and benches out of doors1 and teach right among the bee-hives and hollyhocks6 ,the room is too small for so many scholars1 especially as there are two beds in it4 ,after a while1 the classes are called in1 and one of the scholars chooses a hymn to sing4 ,then ,i ask questions about the lesson4 ,then we count the scholars and call their names1 and give out papers4 ,then ,i ask for verses from the children1 which they have learned in the classes4 ,we then repeat the ,twenty-third ,psalm together1 and close by saying1 in concert1 the ,lord's ,prayer4 ,now1 you know a little of my
