address4 ,he dwelt upon the explorations of ,africa and the emancipation of the slaves in ,america1 and on the relation of these two remarkable events to the evangelization of the #ahj1jjj1jjj of ignorant and idolatrous inhabitants of the hitherto almost unknown continent4 8,the address was marked by intense earnestness and pathos1 and was listened to with rapt attention40 99 99 99 99 99 ,the monthly concert arranged for ,rev4 ,mr4 ,winship's ,questions and the ,jubilee ,songs seems to be a great success4 ,almost daily orders are coming in for the ,songs and ,questions4 ,wherever they have been used they have given the highest satisfaction4 ,we confidently commend them1 therefore1 to churches and ,sabbath-schools that desire to spend a pleasant and profitable hour in considering the work and wants of the ,association4 ,we do not see how the same amount of information in regard to the ,association could be so readily imparted in any other way4 ,orders sent to ,rev4 ,c4 ,l4 disbanded4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,claim ,,of ,,self-,,interest4 ,the claim of the three despised races in the ,united ,states is enforced by a motive of self-interest1 by the relation of their leavening to the future prosperity and even perpetuity of our nation4 ,especially is this true of the freedmen1 as large enough in their numbers to have weight1 and endowed with privileges which make their numbers powerful for good or evil4 ,so large a mass1 if it be corrupt1 is also corrupting4 ,here are three lepers2 ,i can but hint at their diseases4 ,they are full of wounds and bruises and putrifying sores4 ,you shrink and shudder at the picture4 ,but1 my brother1 they are at your very door4 ,what shall we do with them8 ,this sickness is not unto death4 ,worse than that2 it is perpetuated and transmissible2 but it may be cured4 ,the power of ,christ1 who touched the leper with ,his life-giving hand1 is still with us4 ,but we must go in the name of ,jesus of ,nazareth4 ,we cannot bar the negro out2 he has the right to sit in our midst1 even among the senators of the land2 and if he be still ignorant1 and immoral1 and superstitious1 he will spread corruption around him4 ,the only way to prevent him from contaminating us is to let virtue go forth from us to convert and cleanse him4 ,and the question is1 is there enough in us to do it8 ,the very presence of vice and ignorance is contaminating2 it conducts all evil influence and spreads it4 ,the swamp malaria which fills the air1 while it chokes the hovels of the poor1 can by no means be kept out of the palaces of the rich4 ,the foul odors of ,hunter's ,point pay no respect to the brown-stone fronts of ,murray ,hill4 ,if one member suffers1 all the body is afflicted4 ,do you say1 8,it is not our concern08 ,but it is every one's concern4 ,is the ignorance and vice of your own town or city not your concern8 ,you have to pay for it dearly4 ,your taxes for police1 for courts and for prisons are only a small part of what it levies on you4 ,it1 too1 pervades the air and mingles its deadly poison with it1 and you breathe it in4 ,you are proof against it2 it only imperceptibly lessens the tone of your health and vigor4 ,but your neighbor is not1 and perhaps your son or daughter is not2 and in the traps which line our streets your son or my son may stumble and fall2 or behind the shaded windows where the snares are laid1 your son or my son may go to ruin4 ,it is so in the nation4 ,if the leaven be not more active and more potent than the mass1 it will be itself unleavened and spoiled4 ,but there is a greater peril to us than the mere presence of ignorance and vice in its power4 ,by the chances of war1 and for the sake of its success1 #a1jjj1jjj slaves were made citizens4 ,they were armed with the rifle and the ballot4 ,with the rifle they turned the day of strife to the day of settlement2 but with the ballot1 if left slaves as to their intelligence and manliness1 they may make of peace fatal disaster4 ,till they can exercise this solemn trust with wise discretion1 and with conscientious fidelity1 it is a perilous trust in their hands4 ,one million more votes added to the vast number which are swayed by demagogues of either party1 increase by a fearful percentage the dangers of the land4 ,in their ,christian education is our only surety for the future4 ,education for their intelligence1 and ,christianity for their morals1 and as a foundation on which both intelligence and virtue may rest secure4 ,the same danger would be swelled by the numbers of the ,indians and the ,chinese if they were citizens4 ,as it is1 the ,indian can only become so by forswearing all the relations which are most sacred to him1 and which mean to him family and religion4 ,and the ,chinaman1 it has just been decided1 cannot vote1 at least in ,california1 because he is neither white enough nor black enough4 ,but it is the part of every wise man to see the danger1 and to do what he can to avert it4 ,the ,federal ,government cannot do what is needful4 ,the ,states will not do it4 ,christian charity1 with far-sighted wisdom and self-denying philanthropy1 can alone be relied on for the work required--the training of these races4 ,it is an illustration of the truth1 that all self-interests are met1 not by a narrowly planned seeking of them1 but by that broader conformity to the great law of love which1 loving ,god first1 has love for each one in his place1 and seeks the highest good of all4 ,in that is wrapped up1 concealed sometimes1 but surely there1 our own gain and good4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,please ,,peruse1 ,,and ,,ponder4 ,our friends will pardon us for reminding them that the fiscal year of the ,association will close with the month of ,september4 ,what is done to swell the receipts1 either for diminution of debt or to meet current expenses1 must be done quickly4 ,let no one imagine1 however1 that we are not duly grateful to ,god and to ,his people1 for the gifts which have made possible the work on the field1 and lightened so much the drag on our treasury4 ,still1 we feel constrained to ask these givers for a larger giving1 in order that we may free ourselves from an incumbrance which has sadly embarrassed us for years1 and keep pace with the openings before us4 ,two things we ask3 #a4 ,the debt must be cleared away4 ,every interest of the ,association demands it4 ,our friends demand it--do they not8 ,else1 would they have reduced our indebtedness1 within eighteen months1 from over #ij1jjj to some #dj1jjj at this present writing8 ,why may we not believe that ,god has ,his reserves1 both of men and of money1 at hand1 to wipe out the remaining balance against us8 ,we wait to see who will step into the place of honor1 and make some great sacrifice in this behalf4 ,this debt was incurred to aid the poorest of the poor1 as we thought1 at the call of ,christ himself4 ,may not they expect ,his blessing who shall now come to the rescue8 8,inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren1 ye have done it unto ,me40 #b4 ,we need increased supplies to meet our constant outgo4 ,our friends have done well by us during this year--such a year1 too1 as it has been6 ,but they must be faithful to the end of it to ensure us a good record on the #cjth of ,september4 ,they need not be afraid of overdoing it2 for if1 by any good fortune of ours and good-will of theirs1 we should1 after paying all our current claims1 have a small balance1 it will go at once to lessen this still burdensome debt4 ,remember1 too1 that the work is ever increasing on our hands1 save as we have to keep it down4 ,millions of these freedmen must in the next ten years1 if ever1 be brought under the influence of sound learning and true religion4 ,this generation must not pass away till it be possible for every colored child to read the word of ,god4 ,the ,chinaman and the ,indian1 too1 make claims upon us which their cruel treatment by our fellow-citizens only serves to emphasize4 ,africa1 also1 as a culmination of our work1 is calling for new laborers of her own sons to come and bring back to those sitting in darkness the light which is the life of men4 ,but1 in order to this1 our teachers and missionaries must be numbered by hundreds and thousands1 where now they are numbered by scores and hundreds4 ,this is the true economy and the true wisdom4 ,if we are to realize our ideal1 there must be a new interest kindled in the work1 and a great advance in the gifts of ,god's people4 ,with the closing of the year1 therefore1 we invite the intelligent and liberal men of the land to consider once more the work of this ,association1 in its bearing upon this nation1 and in its bearing upon the nations1 to which these races belong4 ,we do not see how we can vindicate ourselves as righteous men1 as men who fear ,god and love our neighbors1 if we neglect this work brought to our doors and laid upon us by sanctions as solemn and pressing as were ever imposed on men4 ,we do1 then1 in behalf of these races1 and in the name of our risen ,lord1 ask the good and the wise1 everywhere1 to give us their sympathies1 their prayers1 and their money1 in measure large enough to put these fields under ample culture for a better and brighter future4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,then ,,and ,,now4 ,,rev4 ,j4 ,e4 ,,roy1 ,d4 ,d41 ,,field ,,superintendent4 ,then--in ,october1 #ahfj--;as the newly-appointed ,district ,secretary for the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 ,i attended its fourteenth annual meeting1 in pastor ,m4 ,e4 ,strieby's church at ,syracuse4 ,it was an occasion of congratulation that the receipts for that year had come up to #ef1jjj--e1jjj more than for the preceding1 and #b1jjj more than for any previous year4 ,there had been sixty missionary laborers in foreign lands1 and #aab in our own country1 the most of whom were in the ,west1 and forty of them in ,illinois4 ,the churches aided numbered #adj1 to which had been added #ihi members1 of whom #fei came by profession of faith4 ,twenty-five revivals were reported4 ,in the ,south1 ,north ,carolina had one missionary and ,kentucky had four1 all of whom were engaged in caring for little churches among the white people4 ,in a year and a half the war came on1 and our missionaries were driven out of the ,south4 ,the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society had cleared itself1 the first of all the national societies1 from complicity with slaveholding1 and so the missionary churches of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 at the ,north and the ,district ,secretary were transferred to the old society4 ,now--after sixteen and a half years--,i find myself1 by the clearest drift of ,providence1 back in the service of the ,association4 ,at its anniversary of #ahei1 in ,chicago1 there was a discussion as to what should come of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 when all the societies and churches should have reached the anti-slavery standard4 ,some held that the ,association was only a tug to help those noble crafts out to sea4 ,president ,blanchard said1 8,yes1 a tug2 but when she has got them all over the bar we will change her into a frigate1 to course up and down all the ,southern waters40 ,last fall1 the ,association came back to ,syracuse to hold its thirtieth anniversary1 and1 sure enough1 the tug had come in as a frigate1 with report of engagements all over the ,south4 ,and so it had been running for the last twelve years4 ,the ,treasurer's report ran up to #bfd1gji4 ,instead of the #aab white churches ,north1 are shown #ei churches among the ex-slaves2 also #g chartered institutions1 #ad high and normal schools1 with #aj1jjj scholars1 and with #ajj1jjj pupils reached by their teachers4 ,the ,indian work abides2 the ,chinese has come on4 ,the scheme for evangelizing ,africa1 by using the ,christianized freedmen1 is opening into proportions immensely beyond the conception of its early movers4 ,then--its constituents were individuals1 and churches of the more pronounced abolition sort4 ,now--since the ,national ,council at ,boston--the ,association has been recognized as the agency of the ,congregational churches for doing their work among 8the three despised races40 ,the old adherents1 developed into generous giving by the necessities of their enterprise1 abide with the enthusiasm of veterans2 while now the mass of our people acknowledge themselves under just as much obligation as they to use this organization in its peculiar sphere of ,christianization at home and abroad4 ,they find it by ,providence marvelously developed and fitted to its work--tested1 toughened and trusted4 ,they hear it said from without1 that our body of churches is doing more and better work among the freedmen than any other4 ,they find that the old anti-slavery education in our families had prepared a multitude of our cultured and consecrated young people to enter this work as soon as the way was open1 even at a salary little above the nominal rate4 ,and so they find this charge laid upon them and readily accept the obligation1 grateful for the opportunity4 ,in coming back to this service1 ,i feel that ,i am only shifting from the right to the left wing of the home missionary army4 ,no man can go beyond me in appreciation of the sublime movement represented by the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society4 ,but in this other department ,i find that most of the same arguments are to be used4 ,do we call for the ,christianizing of the people of our country8 ,here are millions of them at the ,south in need of that process4 ,do we plead for the saving of our country from the spiritual despotism of ,rome8 ,the ,jesuits1 using hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly1 are scheming to ,romanize the congenial material found in the ex-slaves4 ,do we appeal in behalf of the political interests of our country8 ,here are #a1jjj1jjj black voters who cannot read4 ,then by their side1 only lower down in the social scale1 are #a1ajj1jjj white voters who also cannot read the ballots they are to cast2 and the conviction is now gaining ground that the most effectual1 if not the only way1 to lift up that class is to put under them the leverage of the educated negro4 ,do we use that grandest argument--the salvation of our country for the sake of the salvation of the world8 ,here in our own land is looming up the most potent agency for the evangelization of ,africa4 ,that despoiled continent may yet say to her despoilers1 8,ye thought evil against me1 but ,god meant it unto good40 ,the ,a4 ,h4 ,m4 ,s41 true to its charter as a national institution1 as soon as war had battered down the walls that were in its way1 sought1 with the ,philip of its evangelism1 to go towards the ,south4 ,it explored the chief cities and centres of that region1 and was entering devotedly upon that part of the field4 ,it has kept pressing every hopeful opening4 ,it will still be true to its national idea and do all it may be allowed to do there4 ,none feel more keenly than do its chief officers the chagrin at the few opportunities afforded and the failure in so many of them4 ,they have done only their duty in making the costly experiments4 ,and now the apostolic spirit of our ,congregational churches seems to say to the white people of the ,south1 8,seeing ye count yourselves unworthy of these good things1 lo1 we turn to the freedmen40 ,if1 in some distant part of the globe1 a people had just been discovered1 numbering #e1jjj1jjj souls1 speaking our own language1 hungering for our ideas1 our civilization and our ,christianity1 it would thrill the ,christian world to go in at once and possess that land for ,christ4 ,that thing we may do in our own country1 under our own flag4 ,and some of us who now1 with our years1 could not pass muster to go and cope with a foreign language1 have yet not a few years left in which we may do an essentially foreign missionary work in our own language1 in that tongue1 which1 more than any other spoken by man1 is freighted with the associations and the spirit of the ,gospel of the ,crucified ,one4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,annual ,,reports ,,needed4 ,any of our friends who have the following back numbers of the ,annual ,report to break a set if they are anxious to keep it1 but to send any extra numbers they may have4 ,without realizing it1 we have exhausted our supply of these numbers1 and now wish to make up a few extra sets to have bound for our own use4 ,as years go by1 we learn more and more the value to us of these old reports4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,good ,,example4 ,mrs4 ,sally ,perry died in ,boston1 ,mass41 ,june #agth1 aged ninety-one years4 ,the slaves had a large place in her sympathies1 when she could do little more than offer her prayers in their behalf4 ,but when the war had set them free1 and left her charity at liberty to enter on practical offices of good will1 she eagerly embraced the opportunity1 watching for openings4 ,she read in the ,,american ,,missionary1 for #ahff1 a call for funds to establish orphan asylums for the thousands of homeless colored children in the ,south4 ,she came to our office in ,boston for information in regard to it4 ,the result was a donation of #ejj1 to found the ,brewer ,orphan ,asylum in ,wilmington1 ,n4 ,c41 in memory of her deceased daughter4 ,and1 year by year1 while the ,asylum existed1 she gave it the interest of #b1jjj1 devised in her will for its benefit4 ,when the ,asylum was no longer needed1 the city of ,wilmington undertaking to care for its poor1 with the consent of ,mrs4 ,perry1 the funds which she had invested in it were transferred to the ,brewer ,normal ,school in ,greenwood1 ,s4 ,c4 ,this school so enlisted her thoughts and sympathies1 that she determined to make over to it1 two years before her death1 the amount she had designed for it at her decease4 ,accordingly1 she paid over to the ,association1 for the benefit of the school1 two one-thousand-dollar ,u4 ,s4 ,bonds1 which realized #b1daf4be4 ,the writer remembers how her face shone after the act was done4 ,indeed1 giving seemed to be1 to her1 a supreme luxury4 ,the whole amount which she contributed to the ,association1 for its work of physical relief and ,christian education1 was not far from #d1jjj4 ,and the school which she has left in her daughter's name1 the support of which is mainly from her bequest1 will go on perpetuating her influence for the years and generations to come4 ,many1 in the great day1 will rise up and call her blessed4 ,are there not other dear saints of ,god1 friends of the poor and the needy1 who will imitate her spirit and her example8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,negro ,,in ,,the ,,united ,,states4 ,we attempt to give1 though it is difficult1 a condensation of the address made by ,president ,,buckham1 of ,burlington1 ,vt41 at the ,boston ,anniversary of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 ,may #bith1 #ahgh4 ,it has been published in full in the ,congregationalist1 and in pamphlet form already4 ,the negro1 it must be confessed1 has lost the place he once held as an attractive object of philanthropy4 ,invested with the legal rights of a man1 and thus by necessity thrust forward into comparison and competition with other men1 he not only exhibits his inferiority on a conspicuous stage1 but manifests some traits which make him repulsive and odious4 ,the negro cause has thus sunk from an impassioned crusade to a common-place charity4 ,the ,negro ,question4 ,and yet the ,negro ,question is still the great ,american ,question4 ,perhaps it is with questions like this as with the movements of a battle2 those at a distance see them more clearly than those in the thick of action4 ,the intelligent ,englishman or ,frenchman will tell you in an instant that our great problem is the negro question--the political1 as dependent on the social and moral condition of the freedmen4 ,with a population as large as that of the colonies at the ,revolution1 with the full privileges of ,american citizens theirs by constitutional right1 they hold in their hands--the very hands but recently manacled in cruel and degrading bondage--the balance of political power in the nation4 ,as parties are now divided1 the supremacy of one or the other depends on the negro vote2 and whether the negro vote shall be the vote of the negro1 or merely the vote by the negro1 will depend on the degree of manhood he reaches through his social and moral condition4 ,the ,southern ,solution4 ,one party in the ,south1 not including the best elements of ,southern society1 but for the present the dominant one1 has already matured and avowed its solution of the problem4 8,the negro10 they say1 8belongs to a race constitutionally and forever inferior--a race foreordained to serve in some capacity the superior white race4 ,you have declared by law that he shall not be a chattel2 we are determined that he shall not be more than a serf4 ,rule over us he shall not2 rule with us he shall not2 if he must vote1 he shall vote as we bid him2 by all the methods usually employed for that end wherever caste prevails1 by compulsory ignorance1 by superstition1 by terrorism1 by fraud1 when necessary by force1 he shall be compelled to stay in his place as a member of a subject1 an abject race40 ,there are others--and it must not be ignored that among them are some of the leaders of opinion at the ,south--whose language is less violent1 and whose measures are less threatening1 but whose end is substantially the same4 ,they are willing1 possibly ,i should say desirous1 to better the condition of the negro1 so far as to make him a better laborer1 a more thrifty and useful factor in political economy1 a more honest man and a more devout ,christian1 but with stringent limitations to his social and political ambition4 ,they favor education1 but an education so controlled by the superior race1 and so differenced from the education given to the children of this race1 that it shall beget no dangerous and revolutionary aspirations4 ,these men favor religion for the blacks--but such a religion as shall keep them occupied with emotional fervors and boisterous bodily exercises1 not such as shall encourage thoughtful study of truth in ,god's word and works4 ,the ,christian ,solution4 ,now1 as the policy of the party unfriendly in a greater or less degree to the freedman1 is based on the assumption of his inferiority1 so the policy of his friends and benefactors--and he has friends at the ,south as well as at the ,north--must be based on the counter assertion of his manhood4 ,it is not necessary--it is somewhat dogmatic1 it is at least premature--to assert his equality in all respects with the white man4 ,that is an ethnological question which it may take ages to settle1 and when settled it will be mainly a matter of scientific interest4 ,but that the negro is a man2 that everything distinctively human belongs to him2 that he is capable of improvement2 that his intellectual faculties are expanded1 and his moral nature is elevated by means of the same truths and the same influences which invigorate and enlarge and fructify the souls of other men1 and that he is entitled to his full share1 without stint or reserve1 of all the knowledge and all the human agencies and the divine influences by which it is ordained that our common humanity shall reach its highest attainable perfection--this is the broad basis of principle on which the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and all true missionary associations1 found their policy in dealing with negroes1 as with all other races of men whom ,god has made of one blood on all the face of the earth1 and for whose common redemption and perfection ,christ died1 who is the ,saviour of all men4 ,but in one sense the freedman is something more than a man2 he is an ,american citizen2 and he is more than an ordinary citizen2 he is a voter4 ,he has been entrusted by the nation with the highly important duty of giving expression to the municipal1 the ,state1 and the national will in legislative1 judicial and executive acts4 ,he is an integral part of the sovereignty of this nation4 ,we may or may not think it a national mistake to have made him so important a functionary4 ,but the negro is here4 ,he is here either to corrupt our politics1 to degrade our social life1 to debase our religion1 possibly to drag us into another civil war1 if we continue or repeat in some other form our injustice and tyranny to him2 or1 he is here to perform some useful1 perhaps some noble1 part in the work of developing a ,christian civilization at home and extending it abroad through the earth1 if we are faithful to the trust committed to us by ,providence in him4 ,the ,negro ,intellectually4 ,the question of the negro's intellectual capacity has almost become obsolete as a debatable question4 ,strange that it should ever have been seriously maintained1 that a race which has produced its full share of the world's great men all along through history1 a race which has given to the world a ,hannibal1 an ,augustine1 a ,toussaint1 is a race lacking intellectual capacity4 ,strange it is1 on the other hand1 that a race1 however gifted1 should1 though oppressed and stupefied by ages of bondage1 so frequently throw off minds of a high order4 ,if it should be said that these are a few picked men1 whose cases do not indicate the intellectual capacity of the race1 ,i reply it is only a few picked men of any race who are capable of high intellectual attainments1 and that1 because the rarest of talents is that ambition for high attainments which will carry one through toils and sacrifices to the far-away prize4 ,i know no better test of intellectual capacity than the ardent desire for knowledge1 and that desire the freedmen have in a remarkable degree4 ,when the freedman spelt out1 by the light of his pine-torch1 the words3 8,thou ,god seest me10 and then jumped to his feet and exclaimed3 8,john ,martin1 you can read6 ,john ,martin1 you are a man60 he uttered a truth which too few of the boasted superior race so well appreciate--that manhood comes from power to appropriate great ideas4 ,there is no doubt that the returns for money invested in freedmen's schools are large4 ,no one can read the accounts sent to us by teachers in these schools1 and doubt that4 ,the soil is a virgin one1 and yields great crops for a small outlay4 ,think what the ,peabody ,fund is doing for the whole ,south6 ,think how wide-reaching would be the effects of a few thousand dollars put into the colleges at ,atlanta1 ,berea and ,nashville1 where it might be hoped that almost every single dollar would quicken some mind which else were benighted1 but which1 if enlightened1 might carry light to hundreds of benighted minds4 ,the ,negro's ,moral ,capacity4 ,if the negro had come out of this long1 cruel bondage without being terribly degraded morally2 if1 as some pretend1 his moral nature had been under an elevating discipline1 then had slavery not been 8the sum of all villainies40 ,but there is no denying that the ,american negro bears the marks of his bondage1 in his indolence1 his untruthfulness1 his dishonesty1 his animalism4 ,but these are all vices of the slaves1 not of the men2 of the condition1 not of the race4 ,the possibilities of the negro nature are to be estimated by its highest actual attainments in the most favored individuals4 ,two of the noblest races of history have come from an ancestry less promising than our ,southern freedmen--the ,israelites and our own ancestors4 ,he would be a daring prophet who1 in face of these examples1 and of the instances of moral greatness actually produced by this race1 should assert that something noble in character1 some unique type of spiritual excellence1 some splendid order of manhood1 may not yet emerge from this now degraded and unpromising race4 ,what the nature1 the moral capacity of the ,american negro is1 future ages will determine2 and if we believe that ,god made him and gave him his nature1 with all its unrealized possibilities1 it surely cannot be hard for us to believe that there is for him a glorious future of moral and spiritual character4 ,our ,hope in ,schools and ,churches4 ,to the schools and to the churches1 then1 of the ,south we look as the hope of this race4 ,but there are schools1 and schools2 there are churches1 and churches2 and everything depends on the kinds of schools and churches they have4 ,depend upon it1 unless we help the negroes to establish schools which will impart the kind of education which will give them intelligence and thrift1 which will bring to them a consciousness of their resources and ambition to use them to the utmost1 and thus raise themselves in the social and political scale1 others will see to it that schools are established which1 in response to their cry for knowledge1 shall keep the word of promise to their ear1 and break it to their hope2 which shall give them the kind of education that occupies and amuses the mind without developing it1 and that will leave them fit subjects for the ecclesiastical and political yoke which has even now been prepared for them4 ,and1 unless we plant churches among them1 which shall aim to consecrate and employ in ,christ's service heart1 soul1 mind and strength--the whole man and all his capacities--others will see to it that churches are established which1 appealing to his love of display and big responsiveness to sensational and dramatic demonstrations1 shall keep him a child forever1 submissive to school-year a plan of systematic beneficence has been in operation among the scholars and teachers of ,atlanta ,university4 ,it was undertaken largely as an experiment1 and with many misgivings as to the results4 ,its success has been so gratifying as to suggest the possibility that other schools and churches in this missionary field might like to introduce it1 if made acquainted with its practical workings4 ,,the ,,plan4--,this is set forth in the following recommendations1 drawn up by a committee of teachers and scholars1 and adopted by a unanimous vote of the school3-- 8#a4 ,that we recognize more fully the duty and privilege of systematic giving4 8#b4 ,that during the remainder of the school-year we make twenty-five weekly offerings of money at the ,friday afternoon meeting1 to aid in paying the debt of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 8#c4 ,that all persons connected with the school be invited to hand in on slips of paper1 to be provided1 a statement of the amount which they will endeavor to give weekly4 8#d4 ,that all persons handing in these statements be provided with envelopes in which to deposit the weekly amount2 and that envelopes be furnished also to any who may desire to give as they are able1 without stating beforehand a definite amount4 8#e4 ,that any persons who prefer to devote their offerings to any other benevolent object than the one already suggested1 be allowed to do so by giving timely notice of their desire4 8#f4 ,that arrangements be made for furnishing cents in exchange for larger coins1 so that all may be enabled to give as small sums as they wish4 8#g4 ,that an account be kept with each holder of an envelope showing the amount given by each4 8#h4 ,that some person be appointed by the president to superintend the execution of this plan40 ,,its ,,object4--,we desired not so much to raise a large sum of money as to cultivate the habit of giving with thoughtfulness and regularity4 ,the value of this habit we sought to impress upon our scholars in several prayer-meeting talks when the subject was under consideration4 ,if each one gave only one cent a week1 the habit of giving would be acquired1 and this would be worth acquiring4 ,we wished also to encourage the idea that benevolent giving is a fitting act of ,divine worship4 ,our offerings were made at the weekly school prayer-meeting on ,friday afternoon1 and were always preceded by a short prayer of consecration from the president4 ,,its ,,freedom4--,so far as possible the word 8pledge0 was avoided in presenting the matter to the school4 ,each person was asked to consider carefully how much he was able and willing to give4 ,the handing in of a statement of his resolve to give so much per week was designed chiefly to secure a thoughtful decision on the part of each one4 ,if any preferred not to do this they could still receive an envelope and give what they liked from week to week4 ,the keeping of the record was not for the purpose of dunning delinquents2 this was never done4 ,undoubtedly1 however1 the mere fact that the record was kept proved a stimulus to regularity in making the offerings1 and made it possible to tell any donor at any time how much he had paid or had yet to pay4 ,if any one desired to change the amount of his offering1 or to discontinue it altogether1 he was met with no remonstrance4 ,while it was suggested that the offerings be devoted to the debt of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 full opportunity was given to each one to contribute to any other object that he might select4 ,the scholars were especially urged not to be ashamed to give a small sum if they could not give more4 ,in a word1 the whole management of the plan was designed to be helpful rather than dictatorial or inquisitive4 ,,its ,,details4--,these may be skipped by those not specially interested4 ,one thousand strong ,manilla envelopes1 of the size represented below1 were bought for eighty-five cents1 and five hundred of them were printed1 with the dates of the twenty-five weekly offerings1 at an expense of one dollar4 ,a blank cash book1 with stiff covers1 was bought for twenty-five cents1 and a conductor's punch for a dollar and a quarter4 ,thus1 the cost of the outfit was but #c4ce1 and we have the book and punch for indefinite use1 and envelopes enough for another year or more4 ,there being no cents in general circulation in ,atlanta1 several dollars' worth were procured from the ,post ,office4 ,every ,friday morning1 for half an hour before school1 the 8money-changer0 sat at his table in one of the school halls and gave pennies in exchange for nickels and dimes4 ,the sight of him1 by the way1 proved a very serviceable reminder to the scholars that the day of the offering had come4 ,each person was provided with only one envelope1 to be used over and over again4 ,in case of loss a new one was cheerfully given4 ,on the envelope1 between the columns of printed dates1 are written his name1 the number of the name in the record book1 and the page where found1 and a letter indicating the school-room or department to which he belongs4 ,on the inside of the flap is written the number of cents he is to give weekly1 or an interrogative mark if no definite sum has been stated4 ,when the holder of the envelope receives it again1 he finds a little hole punched opposite the date which his last payment has covered2 this constitutes his receipt1 and the unpunched dates show how many more offerings he has to make4 ,illustration ,george ,brown1 for example1 has made ten offerings1 and has fifteen yet to make4 ,his name is numbered 8#df0 on page 8#h0 of the record book1 and he is to receive his envelope back in the ,middle 78,m07 school-room1 where he studies4 ,the envelopes as they are emptied of their contents are separated into two piles1 the first consisting of those which contain exactly the stipulated weekly offering1 and the second of those which do not1 as for example1 when the donor wishes to make two or more offerings at once4 ,care is taken to mark on each envelope of the second pile1 opposite the proper date1 the amount which has been found in it4 ,each of these piles is now assorted1 so as to bring together all the envelopes whose names occur on the same page of the record book1 for convenience in entering the amounts4 ,much time is saved by having a second person read the name-numbers and amounts to the person who enters them1 reading of course1 the figures on the flaps of the first pile1 and those opposite the given date on the second4 ,the envelopes are then properly punched1 and afterwards assorted according to the school-rooms1 and given to the respective teachers to distribute to the scholars4 ,to save loss1 this distribution is deferred till the day before the offering4 ,the record book is long and narrow1 so as to get as many names as possible on a page4 ,the account of each donor requires but one line running across two opposite pages1 which are ruled vertically for twenty-five entries4 ,the amount given each week1 even when more or less than the stipulated amount1 is entered under the date of that week1 thus bringing all the offerings of the same week in the same column4 ,the handling of the money is facilitated by using small cotton bags large enough to hold a hundred cents1 or several dollars in nickels4 ,,its ,,results4--,envelopes were issued to two hundred and nine persons4 ,only ten of these preferred not to state how much they would give each week4 ,sixty-nine1 or about one-third1 offered to give one cent a week2 forty-three1 or about one-fifth1 offered two cents2 fifty-one1 or about one-quarter1 five cents4 ,only fifteen out of the two hundred and nine offered more than five cents a week4 ,among the scholars1 the amounts ranged from one to ten cents2 among the teachers1 from five cents to one dollar4 ,out of the one hundred and ninety-nine who offered definite amounts1 sixty-three paid exactly what they had stated at the outset2 thirty-four 7all scholars7 paid more--in some cases double and over2 while one hundred and two 7of whom a good many had left school7 paid less4 ,thus very nearly half paid in full or over4 ,many of the others were deficient only a few cents1 and these1 in many cases1 unavoidably so4 ,little notes like this would sometimes come in with the offerings3 8,this is all that ,i can pay2 ,i have done the best ,i could40 ,the record shows that many who fell behind for a time afterwards made up the deficiency4 ,the offerings of the ten scholars who did not state what they would pay weekly1 averaged a little over one cent a week2 of the remaining one hundred and eighty-five scholars1 a little over two cents a week2 of the fourteen teachers1 a little over twenty-one cents a week4 ,the scholars paid in all #ajb4jb2 the teachers1 #gc4jj2 making in the aggregate1 #age4jb4 ,this was a little more than eighty-seven and a half percent4 of all that was offered at the start4 ,excluding the teachers1 all of whom paid in full1 the scholars redeemed eighty percent4 of the amount they set out to pay2 and this percentage would have been larger but for the scholars who left school before the close of the year4 ,finally1 the best result of all is1 that we have learned something of the happiness of ,christian giving1 when practised thoughtfully1 conscientiously and willingly4 99 99 99 99 99 see that we have it every ,sabbath4 ,i know of no place in the ,south where the colored people get so much money for labor as they do here4 ,but they don't save any money at all2 they get it1 and it is gone1 and they cannot see what they got for it4 ,i am trying to induce our members to save their money1 and buy for themselves homes2 but it is hard to get them to do this1 like almost everything else that is right and for their own good4 ,i know the ,lord has blessed me greatly in my work1 for which ,i am thankful4 ,pray for us at this place4 ,,alabama4 ,a ,surprise ,party--,a ,church well ,organized--,burrell ,school4 ,,mr4 ,e4 ,c4 ,,silsby1 ,,selma4 ,brother ,noble mentions a surprise party in ,montgomery4 ,i can refer to an occurrence somewhat similar here4 ,last fall1 during the time that we were without a pastor1 ,brother ,callen1 of the church1 filled the pulpit4 ,his labors were faithfully performed1 and our 8,ladies' ,society0 determined to give him a 8pound donation party40 ,the 8,teachers' ,home0 was decided upon as the place1 and the members of the church were quite eager to bestow upon him some slight testimonial1 indicating their appreciation of his ,christian character and faithfulness4 ,it was a complete surprise to him1 and the articles contributed were opportune1 although 8pounded0 at him4 ,one of the most encouraging features of our church is the 8,ladies' ,society10 which holds a prayer-meeting every ,sabbath afternoon1 and a sewing society every fortnight4 ,at these prayer-meetings the girls and young ladies of the church are frequently put forward to lead1 and thus are educated to ,christian work4 ,the older and younger ladies are also brought more nearly together1 and made to realize more fully a common interest in the cause of ,christ4 ,an account of this meeting has been given in the ,,missionary1 and1 by this means1 a very pleasant correspondence has grown up between the society here and one at ,dedham1 ,mass4 ,the ladies at ,dedham sent their greetings and sympathy1 and encouraged and helped us with their prayers4 ,it has been a blessing to both societies4 ,hearing of the efforts of our ladies to purchase matting for the aisles of our church1 they generously rendered assistance1 and the matting has been laid4 ,one interesting and instructive feature of our work is that of the ,committee on ,missionary ,intelligence4 ,this committee was organized during the pastorate of ,brother ,pope4 ,its work is to present at times reports of missions in this and other lands4 ,on the occasion of this presentation the attention is certain to be fixed1 and the matter of the papers is discussed for sometime afterwards4 ,four new members have been received on profession2 two heads of families and two young people4 ,one has been received by letter4 ,one of those uniting on profession--a man--had long been the subject of prayer by a wife1 mother1 sister1 son and other friends1 but at last the stubborn heart has yielded1 and he is free4 ,the 8,ministerial ,association10 formed last year1 and consisting of the ministers from the various colored churches1 has been holding its meetings this year4 ,the association meets at the study or residence of each pastor1 in turn4 ,the time of the meeting is occupied in discussing doctrines1 presenting plans of sermons1 and deciding upon practical subjects to present to their various congregations4 ,the ,sabbath-school still continues in interest1 and is growing in strength4 ,i well remember that1 a few years ago1 when the ,northern teachers who were laboring in the ,sabbath-school went home for their vacation1 we with difficulty secured a few to take their places2 but now1 superintendent1 organist and teachers could be secured from resident members of the school4 ,the church is now in charge of ,brother ,a4 ,j4 ,headen1 a student from the ,theological ,department of ,talladega ,college4 ,i will add that the interest in ,burrell ,school is not diminishing4 ,the school was never so far advanced in studies before1 and for the coming year the prospect is good for having quite a number of advanced pupils4 ,we seem to be keeping a hold upon our older pupils4 ,i have a class of them in one study this summer4 ,some are becoming very proficient in vocal music1 singing by note4 99 99 99 99 99 ,anniversary of ,trinity ,school--,a anniversary sermon was preached by the pastor4 ,the scholars had prepared themselves for the exercises of ,tuesday evening4 ,at the appointed hour the church was full of a bright-faced throng of old and young4 ,a class of little girls1 dressed in white1 stood on each side of the broad central aisle2 and as ,miss ,wells 7who begun the school ,may #bhth1 #ahfe7 advanced1 they spread flowers in her way4 ,she was conducted to her seat1 which was covered with flowers4 ,the exercises consisted of speeches1 compositions1 and music4 ,one old man--,uncle ,dennis ,collier--said he was very grateful to ,miss ,wells for what she had done for him4 ,he was blind1 and couldn't learn to read1 but his 8wife was the grandmother of sixty-six children10 and he doubtless felt that he had through them received a full share of the benefits of the school4 ,she had done him favors1 he said1 8and if you want to know what kind of favors1 here's one of 'em10 as he vigorously shook his coat4 ,then the offerings of flowers were brought forward1 and it seemed as if ,miss ,wells would be buried in the mass of roses1 lilies1 magnolias1 etc4 ,these anniversaries do the people good1 and enable them to look back and compare their condition in ,may1 #ahfe1 with their present condition1 and to learn more forcibly what it is that is lifting them up4 ,school closed on the #bhth of ,june4 ,the examinations were on the afternoons of the #beth1 #bfth1 and #bgth4 ,the schoolrooms were crowded with people from the neighborhood2 they were of every shade from black to white1 but all 8colored40 ,all the classes were examined1 from the little 8tots0 to those in grammar1 analysis1 and algebra4 ,the examinations showed patient drill on the part of the teachers1 and generally work on that of the scholars4 ,friday afternoon and evening--the #bhth--occurred the exhibition4 ,compositions1 declamations1 orations and music instructed and amused the audience till well along to midnight4 ,all were pleased and edified4 ,the colored people remember that1 before the war1 they sometimes went to anniversaries and exhibitions of the white people1 but now they can attend those of their own4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a that they both were compelled to give up in despair4 ,i came to this place in ,april1 #ahge4 ,my first sermon was preached to a benevolent society1 which assembled in the church building4 ,the society of the services1 ,i asked the people if they would meet me here in this house and take part in carrying on a series of meetings1 two weeks from that time4 ,they said they would4 ,on my arrival at the church at the appointed time for the meetings to begin1 ,i found the church crowded to its utmost capacity4 ,we held meetings for one week1 which resulted in the conversion of six persons1 and the willingness of three others to join with me in the formation of a church4 ,rev4 ,h4 ,e4 ,brown came up from ,talladega1 and1 on the #bcrd of ,may1 #ahge1 assisted by the ,methodist minister of the as any one could have done under the same circumstances4 7,he was one of the converts74 ,with these means1 we set sail on the ocean of ,god's eternal power4 ,we drifted on until we reached ,october1 #ahge1 at which time we took on board nine more passengers for glory4 ,we again set sail with the eighteen passengers on board4 ,by ,october1 #ahgf1 finding that we numbered forty-two1 we deemed it expedient to stop over1 and thank ,god for bringing us so far on our journey towards the heavenly ,jerusalem4 ,it would have inspired every reader of this article to have heard the words of thanksgiving and rejoicing1 and to have seen the sympathizing tears1 as they stole silently down the cheeks of those who had previously opposed the work here on account of its name and obscure history to the colored people4 ,permit me to say just here that many of the aristocratic whites of our village took part in the above-stated exercises4 ,we anchored here for some time1 making repairs and casting overboard all who were diseased with intemperance and other maladies1 which are so common to those who are not willing to resist the devil4 ,we rejoiced that the great ,physician of souls had so wonderfully preserved all of our number except six4 ,one had taken the ship of time1 and sailed into eternity on the #bfth of ,november1 #ahgf--8,peace be to his ashes02 three took leave for other churches2 thus leaving us thirty-two passengers for the next tour4 ,after repairing all things needful1 we set sail again1 with a full supply of love1 truth and mercy4 ,we landed in the midst of a glorious revival1 in ,september1 #ahgg4 ,here we took on board nineteen passengers more1 and one on the #gth day of ,july1 #ahgh4 ,a few days ago the church committee took account of stock1 and found that we have on board the gospel ship fifty-two soldiers of the ,cross1 varying in age from thirteen to sixty1 all of whom are ready for the next tour1 upon which we expect to start out on the second both teachers and pupils1 receiving praises from all who attended4 ,the audience was very large1 among whom we noticed quite a number of prominent white citizens1 both ladies and gentlemen4 ,the call for order1 accompanied with the request for good behavior1 and that there should be no talking or stamping of feet1 was1 considering the immense throng which filled the church1 well observed1 and we doubt not that all went away pleased and highly gratified with the exhibition4 ,the exercises were commenced with an opening chorus1 entitled1 8,hold the ,fort10 which was followed with prayer1 by ,that the colored people are progressing1 and that rapidly1 too1 in an educational point of view1 is a fact beyond any doubt1 we will venture to say1 in the minds of those who have given the subject even a casual investigation4 ,we are impressed with the idea that our people in general have not yet given to this system of free education that reflection to which it is so richly entitled4 ,but we are also impressed with its growing favor1 and the importance that will be attached to the institution at no distant day4 ,it is not only our duty1 but we should endeavor to make it our pleasure to colored1 ex-masters and ex-slaves1 sitting where they could find seats1 without distinction1 and with the kindest feelings4 ,on the large platform sat in the rear the more advanced students1 about professional men1 with their wives1 among whom were several colored preachers2 outside was a mixed crowd of five hundred or more4 ,to this crowd twenty orations and essays were delivered by sixteen young men and four young ladies1 of whom fourteen were white and six colored2 and the only manifest thought of color was seen in the fact that one side of the audience was of a darker shade than the other4 ,there was not the least sign of disturbance1 nor any indication of dissatisfaction with this order of things1 though more than two thousand of the audience must have come from regions outside of ,berea1 which is a village of five hundred inhabitants4 ,a prominent ,southern lawyer remarked that he never witnessed so good order in so large a crowd4 ,this state of things has been brought about without constraint1 in the most natural way imaginable4 ,it was originally a white school1 but thoroughly anti slavery4 ,a few months after emancipation1 a couple of colored youths were admitted4 ,half the white students left immediately4 ,but the vacancy was soon filled with colored students2 and eventually the white students returned1 and the trouble was over4 ,the whole question seems to turn on the learning of one simple lesson--that contiguity with a free man is no more disagreeable than contiguity with a slave4 ,the colors are mixed in all ,southern society4 ,a little change in the mixture has here occurred1 and that is all4 ,the college campus1 in which are all the college buildings except the ,ladies' ,hall1 consists of forty-five acres covered with native forest would be won back from ,christian heresy to their ancestral orthodoxy4 ,what passes here in this regard is not unknown at the old ,chinese homesteads2 and what is known is felt4 ,but we ought not to helped us to larger harvesting4 #a4 ,i observe that our ,christian ,chinese have a strong desire to do this work4 ,one of them once wrote me as follows3 8,in ,china1 those who live in the villages don't know ,jesus and never heard of ,him4 ,i am sorry ,i cannot go home4 ,if ,i could fly ,i would go home immediately1 and tell how good and how kind ,jesus is4 ,then ,i think they would all learn to love ,him also4 ,i want all our people in ,china to be ,christian1 and our mothers and sisters and friends to get the key1 so they will go to heaven when they die40 ,i shall never forget the joy that shone in the face of our ,jee ,gam when he told me1 a few months since1 that a mission had been established near his home4 ,soon after1 ,i found him writing for other eyes than mine--8,oh1 how glad ,i feel whenever ,i think of this mission-house in my own beloved district4 ,how much ,i am indebted to the ever-living and merciful ,father for sending these missionaries there60 ,in expressions like these1 these brethren represent the almost universal feeling among our ,chinese believers--not from ,san ,francisco and ,oakland alone1 but from ,san ,leandro1 from ,petaluma1 from ,santa ,barbara1 from ,stockton4 ,as conversions are reported1 there comes again and again the suggestion that such or such a one wants to learn how to preach the ,gospel in his native land4 #b4 ,they are doing this thing now4 ,the missionary sent to ,jee ,gam's district was converted in ,california4 ,the story is full of interest1 and ,i give it in ,jee ,gam's own words4 ,it illustrates well the truth ,i wish to state on more sides than one3 8,six years ago1 a ,chinese fortune-teller1 while in ,california1 heard a ,chinese missionary speaking to a crowd of his countrymen on the subject of superstition4 ,his heart was deeply touched4 ,not long after he went home1 and at once commenced to build a house for his family1 without going to an appointer of days to ask him to select a lucky day to begin upon4 ,and so his friends and relatives told him that he must have a day selected before he put a single man to work1 or his house could never be built to stand1 or somebody would be killed by evil spirits before the house was completed4 ,he told his friends that he had done with that superstition1 and that he would keep on building4 ,finding they could not persuade him1 they left1 saying they would have no more to do with him1 for he had become a foreigner4 ,then he was not only despised by these friends1 but by every one who lived in that village4 ,they said the evil spirits would soon take his life1 or some great trouble would surely visit his family4 ,finally1 his house was completed4 ,he moved in and lived in perfect safety4 ,people then began to wonder why the evil spirits did not visit this house4 ,some said they were busy elsewhere2 but others said they must have gone away1 and1 on their return1 they would cause this home and this obstinate family to be desolated4 ,so they waited1 but in vain2 for this man prospered1 and in due time1 in that very house1 a son was born to him4 ,when1 now1 the people saw the joy of this household1 they said one to another1 #8,he must have worshipped the foreign ,god1 and so the spirits dare not touch him4' ,he came back to ,california and went to fortune-telling again4 ,this time he determined to learn more of ,christ1 and every opportunity he could find he attended the ,chinese meeting1 and searched for truth by reading the ,bible4 ,he was finally converted1 gave up his profession1 and was baptized by ,rev4 ,mr4 ,loomis4 ,he then went home the second time1 and studied at ,rev4 ,dr4 ,happer's mission in ,canton1 where he was fitted to be a very able missionary1 for he had a very good ,chinese education before he became a ,christian4 ,when he got through his studies1 he was sent to a large city1 not far from his own home4 ,there he labored successfully for about two years1 and he had been the means of converting a number of his countrymen1 among whom was one of his villagers1 a professor of ,confucius4 ,he was on his way to a county examination2 he visited the chapel where this missionary was preaching1 not that he might learn about ,jesus1 but merely for curiosity4 ,but the ,lord's design was otherwise4 ,he sent him there to be converted by the ,holy ,spirit1 and fitted for the great work which ,he intended to assign him4 8,after his conversion1 this missionary and a delegate were sent to visit ,chuck ,hum1 a city about six miles from my home4 ,when they reached there1 great was their surprise to learn that a man named ,quan ,lang1 who lived close by1 had been ,christianized in ,australia1 and had been preaching there1 in the open air1 for the last three months4 ,they searched and found him earnest in the faith1 glad and anxious to join himself with these missionaries4 ,they consulted together about opening a chapel there4 ,then they wrote ,dr4 ,happer about it4 ,he consented1 and they began4 ,but oh1 what a hard time they met6 ,opposition came upon them from every side4 ,even the whole city firmly united against them4 ,after violent persecution1 the governor was consulted4 ,he sent proclamations to the head man of the city and the judge of the district1 commanding protection to his person and property4 ,then this missionary could have as many police officers to protect him as he pleased4 ,they even became burdensome to him1 and he had to dismiss them4 ,when the chapel was dedicated1 it was crowded to its utmost capacity40 ,this brings the story down to the present time4 ,the work in that district1 it will be perceived1 was begun by an ,australian convert1 and is now carried on by one from ,california4 ,two of our ,oakland brethren1 ,joe ,jet and ,lee ,sam1 have recently returned to ,china1 and intend to commence at once their studies at a mission-school1 in order to preach the ,gospel4 ,one of our ,san ,leandro brethren1 ,jee ,wee1 started for ,china last ,october1 and has just returned4 ,on the westward voyage he fell in with some missionary families and a ,chinese evangelist4 ,the result was that at once1 on reaching ,canton1 he began evangelistic work1 opening a room for the distribution of ,bibles1 and preaching4 ,he encountered opposition and persecution at first1 but1 on application at headquarters1 was protected in the same manner with those of whom ,jee ,gam writes above4 ,the crowds that listened sometimes numbered #cjj or #djj4 ,more than twenty were hopefully converted1 his own father and mother being among them4 ,another ,lee ,sam1 who returned to ,china about three years ago1 and who1 though a ,christian1 had not at the time he left us been baptized1 in his first letter to his brethren here1 told of the conversion of his brother1 an educated man and a sort of college professor1 to whom he had been speaking of the way of life4 ,we have lost sight of this ,lee ,sam1 of ,lui ,chung1 also1 a most hopeful convert and ,christian worker1 whom ,i ought to have retained in ,california1 and many others likewise4 ,it is not strange that this should be4 ,indeed1 it could not be otherwise4 ,we1 #aj1jjj miles distant1 could not possibly follow them1 save with our prayers4 ,but they ought to be followed1 and nurtured and edified4 ,and not only that1 but set at work1 as light-givers and soul-savers1 where-ever they go4 ,it is easy to see that a ,chinese1 returning to his native land from ,california1 would be likely to have special advantages for doing missionary work4 ,in the first place1 by a process of natural selection1 they are picked men4 ,it is not the dullards or the drones that undertake to cross the ,pacific1 and make their way to fortune in a land so strange to them as this4 ,and by the same process it is1 again1 among those who come1 the picked men that enter our schools4 ,the great mass do not care enough about learning to follow up each hard day's work with two hours of evening study4 ,those that come do care1 and care so much that they brave bitter reproaches in coming1 from those whom they leave behind4 ,then1 besides the limited education which they are able to get in our schools1 there is an unconscious education1 which they must be1 all the while1 unconsciously receiving1 as they breathe the air of a free and ,christian land4 ,their views are broadened2 the old crusted conservatism is broken2 and they can speak out1 with a force and an authority which1 it seems to me1 no ,chinese who had never left his native district could possibly use4 ,then1 there cannot but be an interest gathering about them1 as having been in 8the land of the golden mountains40 ,they have the story of this to begin with where-ever they go2 they gather a crowd by means of it2 they gain attention2 and the gospel of ,christ will come in after it as easily as if it belonged--as1 indeed1 it does--to the very theme4 ,now1 what have ,i to propose8 ,it is this3 ,we ought to have a mission at ,hong ,kong4 ,it ought to be in close1 vital relationship with our ,california ,mission4 ,it ought to be at ,hong ,kong1 because there our steamers land their passengers1 and from that point our brethren scatter4 ,most of them do not enter ,canton at all4 ,we ought to have1 then1 at least one ,american missionary--not necessarily a great man1 but a man of earnest piety and business capacity1 and sound common sense--a man who would give to his mission the atmosphere1 which1 ,i am sure1 our brethren recognize in the mission here1 of ,christian kindliness and brotherly love--not that of a condescending benevolence1 but that of a hearty ,christian brotherhood4 ,he ought to meet every converted ,chinese--at least1 from our own mission 7others1 if they are willing7--and take him home to his mission-house2 find out his destination1 and arrange to keep track of him1 and make use of him as an errand-bearer for ,christ4 ,and we1 on our part1 ought to be raising up and sending men who1 educated either here or in ,china1 may give themselves1 under direction of this missionary1 to district gospel work4 ,so far forth1 ,i am confident4 ,it is no new thought with me1 and1 in proposing it1 ,i feel that ,i am walking on solid ground4 ,i feel that ,i speak in ,god's name when ,i say this ought1 forthwith1 to be done4 ,whether the proposed mission should be sustained by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 or by the ,american ,board2 whether more than one efficient ,american missionary will ever be needed2 what sort of mission work he should go about in ,hong ,kong itself--concerning these and other matters of detail1 any suggestion ,i could make would be crude1 and1 likely enough1 mistaken4 ,but the proposal itself1 as to its essentials1 ,i stand in no doubt about1 and ,i ask the prayers and co-operation of all who love ,christ and souls1 that it may be speedily fulfilled4 ,let me add1 as if by postscript1 that a ,chinese brother1 ,wun ,ching ,ki1 a member of one of the ,london ,missionary ,society's churches at ,canton1 who is in business at ,hong ,kong1 has been doing something in the line above marked out2 has kindly welcomed and aided our brethren on their arrival2 has suggested that1 in that ,english city of ,hong ,kong1 mission work among the ,chinese could be conducted most successfully1 upon the very plan which we use here2 and is very desirous himself to send native preachers into the neglected interior districts1 asking whether our ,chinese brethren here could not help him so to do4 ,the emphatic testimony which these bear to his good judgment and general efficiency1 as well as to his ,christian character1 makes both the work he has done1 and the work he wants to do1 confirm my confidence in the suggestion ,i have made4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,children',s ,,page4 ,we make the following extracts from letters of ,mr4 ,a4 ,e4 ,white1 one of our missionaries to ,africa1 to his former teachers at ,hampton ,institute3 ,i have just returned from the ,shangay ,mission1 where ,i have been for near two weeks 7this mission is carried on by the ,united ,brethren of ,ohio47 ,the brother there sent for me to come and spend some time with him1 and to give him some advice in regard to his work while ,i was there4 ,this mission is on the mainland1 and one can see more of the habits of the people than he can here4 ,when their children have gotten up to be two or three years old they send them to the bush1 called the ,purroo and ,bundoo4 ,the ,purroo is the place where they send the boys1 and the ,bundoo where they send the girls4 ,they keep them there for a good many years1 and cut on their backs the shape of a hamper-basket1 and teach them the use of the country medicines and the way of worshipping the heathen's gods1 and all the heathen's habits4 ,if a man wants to marry1 he can go to the ,bundoo ,bush and pay eight pieces of cloth1 of two yards each1 and take any girl he wants4 ,after these boys have spent all the time which the chief says they must spend in the bush1 they come out and go to whatever trade they have learned4 ,some are doctors1 others teachers1 and some are farmers4 ,the doctors go around with their medicine1 and sell it at a very high price2 and when they attend the sick they carry a board about one foot long and nine inches wide1 with a bottle of ink and brush4 ,on this board they write1 and then wash the ink off and give it to the sick to drink4 ,then they have various things to sell to keep away sickness and to give good luck4 ,these children are taught all kinds of vice1 and they think it is right--such things as lying and stealing4 ,they are very easy to teach1 and they put a great deal of faith in the person who teaches them1 and whatever they are taught they believe4 ,so one can see that the hope of this country lies in the children4 ,it is a hard thing to get a heathen to turn from his god2 and ,i believe you can only do this by prayer4 ,the missionaries who want to do anything must use the weapon of prayer4 ,the chief of ,shangay is an educated man2 he spent eight years in the high school of ,england4 ,when you find one of the heathen educated1 he is ten times worse than an uneducated one4 ,this man was taken up and sent to ,england and educated there4 ,if he had been trained under some good missionary1 he might have been of use to the country4 ,i have given the school to ,mr4 ,miller1 one of the new comers1 and ,i have taken other work4 ,we had an examination1 and all the people seemed to be pleased4 ,we had1 also1 pieces recited on the stage1 and a dinner for the children and the friends of the school4 ,the people said that they never saw anything of the kind in ,africa before4 ,i think now we have about #adj pupils that are coming4 ,we don't have that many any one day1 but they are in attendance4 ,i have some fine boys in school1 and one whom ,i want to send to ,hampton next fall1 if ,i can find a place there for him1 and some one to help me pay for his board4 ,please ask the ,general if he can have a place there8 ,he is the boy who has been with me since ,i have been here1 and ,i have taken him and want to do all ,i can to educate him4 ,last ,sunday was the happiest day ,i have seen for many4 ,we had thirteen new members to unite with the church--twelve on profession2 and one who once was a member1 and was shut out when the church was closed1 came back and united the second time4 ,and of this number1 six were members of my ,bible-class--four were my best boys1 as ,i call them1 and two ,i own as the fruits of my own labor4 ,the young man whom ,i have already written you about was one4 ,he has been trying ever since his brother became a ,christian on the ship1 and at last has made up his mind to follow ,christ4 ,you can imagine how ,i felt to see all these--my boys--standing up acknowledging ,christ to be their ,saviour4 ,there was another of my class to unite with us1 but he was sick and could not4 ,i hope he will be able by the next ,communion-day4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts ,,for ,,july1 #ahgh4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,maine1 #aec4ge4 ,cumberland ,centre4 ,o4 ,s4 ,t4 #ej;c42 ,e4 ,j4 ,b4 #be;c4 #j4ge ,foxcroft
