,,july1 #ahgh4 ,no4 #g4 99 99 99 99 99 ,american ,missionary ,association4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we are happy to state that the 8,new ,cartridges0 are in frequent demand1 and from sources which insure their best and most judicious use4 ,by the way1 that name1 which was used quite casually1 appears to have clung to them1 so that they are called for under that title more than as the ,pamphlets4 ,one brother writes3 8,i am the only one in our religious society that fires the ,american ,missionary gun at the mission meetings1 and ,i want cartridges to suit40 ,another says3 8,i will fire them at my people in the course of a month or two1 and you shall have the game40 ,and a third3 8,i hope they will kick enough to have you feel the effect40 ,we refer any who may not understand these allusions to the list of new ,pamphlets on the last page of the cover4 ,we send them free to all who will use them and let us 8have the game40 99 99 99 99 99 ,the question is frequently asked1 especially at our ,boston office1 8,what is the price of the ,questions and ,songs prepared for ,sunday-school concerts80 ,we answer3 ,they are furnished gratuitously1 and gladly1 to any pastor or superintendent who will use them as designed4 ,only send in your requests for them for this purpose1 and you shall receive them free4 ,the interest and the gifts which they incite pay us a hundred fold4 99 99 99 99 99 ,at the ,boston ,anniversary1 held ,may #bc;d1 addresses were made by ,rev4 ,george ,r4 ,merrill1 of ,biddeford1 ,maine1 and by ,president ,buckham1 of the ,university of ,vermont4 ,the remarks of the latter appear in full in the ,congregationalist4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the season of the year has come again1 when the schools are closing1 and teachers returning ,north for the summer4 ,the year's work being ended1 the laborers must be paid4 ,just at this time the receipts grow less1 and the income is not so well adapted as at other times to the unusual outgo4 ,if the churches which have taken their collections recently will forward them promptly1 and if those who are purposing to send us money soon will send it a few days sooner1 we may be saved considerable embarrassment4 ,we do not want to have a single teacher's or preacher's claim unpaid the day it becomes due and is presented4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we have referred recently more than once to special wants among our ,southern institutions1 especially at ,tougaloo and ,talladega4 ,both of these1 and ,straight ,university as well1 are in pressing need of new dormitories1 to accommodate the students from abroad1 who come to them for instruction unless deterred by the well-known want of room4 ,several thousands of dollars have been pledged for the ,tillotson ,normal ,school in ,texas1 an eligible site for which has been already secured2 and it is important that this stock should grow speedily to be a fruit-bearing tree4 ,these special needs must be kept in mind1 and if there should be1 during the summer months1 some special pleas for help in meeting them1 we trust the friends of the freedmen will be ready to respond1 if not waiting impatient to be asked4 ,some of these college presidents and professors will be in the ,north before very long1 and may think it worth while to tell the things they know and the things they have not got1 which are often harder to bear than the things they have4 ,the pleasantest way of all would be for their friends to lay by in store something for them1 that there be no gatherings when they come4 99 99 99 99 99 ,special exigencies during the past year demanded of us that we should have a special agent in the field4 ,it was necessary that the burned buildings at ,macon1 ,mobile1 ,new ,orleans and ,savannah should be replaced as speedily as it could be wisely and intelligently done4 ,it was not merely to rebuild1 but to build better1 both as to location and adaptation for the work1 with a constant view to economy and the limits of insurance money4 ,the ,executive ,committee persuaded ,prof4 ,t4 ,n4 ,chase to leave his chair1 at ,atlanta ,university1 temporarily1 and undertake the general supervision of the educational work1 and1 especially1 the oversight of these important measures for replacing1 improving and enlarging the school buildings4 ,we have now gratefully to record the achievement of this latter work1 in great part1 and its forwardness so far as it is not yet fully done4 ,three of the locations have been changed1 involving the sale and purchase of lands4 ,plans have been made1 altered1 adapted1 in all cases1 we believe1 to the excellent accommodation of the schools and churches1 and to the entire satisfaction of the teachers and missionary pastors4 ,as ,prof4 ,chase returns to his chosen and preferred work at ,atlanta1 we desire to express our appreciation of the great value of his services in this special work4 ,nor has his usefulness been limited to the supervision of buildings alone4 ,he has always had more interest in the schools themselves than in their mere habitations2 and his suggestions in regard to them have been valuable and practical1 while in many other ways he has rendered important service to the executive officers of the ,association4 ,the wider acquaintance which he has made during his journeyings and sojournings with the work at large1 will1 we doubt not1 increase his usefulness to the institution with which he has been so long and honorably connected4 99 99 99 99 99 ,it may be remembered that we said1 at the beginning of the year1 that we should be glad to make the enlargement of the ,southern church work the characteristic work of #ahgh4 ,we have not done very much as yet in this direction1 though the subject has constantly and increasingly received attention and earnest thought4 ,and yet it is a matter which1 for practical results1 must be considered in detail1 rather than at large2 in the concrete1 rather than in the abstract2 and in the field1 rather than in the office4 ,this consideration1 in part1 as well as the frequent need of speedy communication with the various departments of our ,southern work1 have led us to be on the lookout for a man peculiarly qualified for the position of ,field-,superintendent of the ,southern work4 ,providentially1 in the changes going on in the ,home ,missionary ,society1 the ,rev4 ,j4 ,e4 ,roy1 ,d4 ,d41 of ,chicago1 was at liberty to consider the claims of this position1 which was tendered to him4 ,and we are glad to announce1 as the weekly press has already done1 that ,dr4 ,roy has accepted the position1 and will enter speedily upon its duties1 making his home at ,atlanta1 ,ga41 during the larger part of the year4 ,it must not be expected by our friends that there will follow this new appointment a rapid and spasmodic enlargement of the ,church work1 or that the first few months will add largely to the small list of ,congregational churches in the ,south4 ,the ,doctor is too wise and experienced a field-marshal to design or desire any such sudden and apparent gain4 ,nor shall we estimate his efficiency by any such shallow measure4 ,but we can assure the friends of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 that the whole subject will receive a consideration careful1 patient1 and detailed1 the results of which will appear in a policy which1 we trust1 may be consistent and approved4 ,for fifteen years we have been laying foundations with care1 in the education of the freedmen and their preparation for citizenship in the ,state4 ,we believe that this same education is fitting them for a church in which all are most fully citizens4 ,but1 after these years of toil1 efficient1 as we think1 and full of promise1 we wish to build on these foundations--not wood1 hay1 stubble1 transient and perishable things1 deservedly short-lived and weak2--but the gold1 the silver1 and the precious stones of ,christian character and ,christian churches1 which shall be able to stand all the tests of time and of temptation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,permanent1 ,,interest-,,bearing ,,investments4 ,many persons1 affected by financial disasters1 have at least one consolation--what they have given for ,jesus' sake is saved4 ,more than this1 it is bearing interest1 and no human power can lessen or destroy it4 ,it is not like a bond1 payable in full at the option of the one who issues it4 ,it draws interest throughout eternity4 ,the grain sown will multiply1 some thirty1 some sixty1 and some an hundred fold1 and the sheaves will aggregate a much larger amount than the seed4 ,those who have sown bountifully1 will reap also bountifully4 ,the only bags that wax not old are those woven by gifts4 ,these are stored away in the heavenly garners1 and will add to the exceeding weight of glory4 ,gifts do give relief to the recipients2 they further the work for man's redemption4 ,this fact is the objective reason for them2 it lies upon the surface1 and is soonest comprehended4 ,there are times1 however1 when it is proper to consider how our charities may abound to our own account--how we may secure for ourselves enduring mansions1 spotless robes1 and imperishable crowns4 ,if we have been tempted to trust unduly to uncertain riches1 which have made for themselves wings and used them1 it is time to ask1 what investments are safe--what are the treasures that never fail8 ,bountiful givers cannot be absolutely poor4 ,they may be called to wait a little for their inheritance1 but only for a little1 for their ,master's word is sure3 8,behold1 ,i come quickly1 and my reward is with me1 to give to every man according as his work in the ,united ,states8 ,we1 who have the leaven1 what do we owe to those who have it not8 ,we1 who are the leaven1 what to that which is a foreign and corrupting mass1 that we may transform it into not only that which is leavened1 but1 as all which is itself leavened becomes1 into leaven itself8 ,what claim on us have they8 ,we answer1 the claim of need4 ,we do not even say1 of want1 which is conscious need1 but of need2 the mere absence of that which we have to enjoy1 the mere contrast of their want with our plenty1 that of itself is1 perhaps1 the greatest of all claims4 ,that is not the truest generosity which waits to be besieged with tears and cries for help1 which lingers behind the closed door of its comfortable home1 until it is called out by special application1 and its sympathies are moved by loud appeals--as that is not the truest need which proclaims its wants most loudly--but that which goes and looks1 and1 knowing or suspecting want1 seeks it out1 patiently and lovingly1 to relieve it4 ,so ,god has treated this sinful world4 ,he looked from heaven1 he saw1 he bowed the heavens and came down4 ,it was the need1 and not the prayer1 of the world which brought the ,lord ,jesus to its relief4 ,once here1 ,he sees a man lie in the porches of the pool ,bethesda2 ,he only sees him1 and ,he asks at once1 8,wilt thou be made whole80 ,he sees the multitudes in the wilderness1 and it is only bread they lack1 and ,he has compassion on them1 and from the storehouse of the ,father's wealth1 supplies their need4 ,he sees the sins of the world1 in which the world is taking pleasure and rejoicing1 and against their rejection1 their blasphemy1 and their persecution1 dies by their hands to free them from their sins4 ,and if need be a claim1 then the claim is in proportion to the need4 ,that is the loudest call which comes from the deepest depths4 ,but what are these8 ,not poverty1 for that may consist with all which is best and worthiest in this life--with intelligence1 virtue1 and faith in ,god4 ,but the opposites of these--ignorance1 immorality1 and superstition4 ,we need not tell you that the #e1jjj1jjj of freed men in the ,south1 the #cjj1jjj ,indians of the ,northwest1 and the1 at least1 #aej1jjj ,chinamen on the ,pacific ,coast1 are1 by our standard1 in this direst want4 ,the negroes and the ,indians1 unlettered and unintelligent1 given over by the habits of their lives1 these to the vices which are found among the degraded classes which are domesticated1 and those to the immoralities which attend a wild life1 and in both cases1 made worse by the neighborhood of those possessing greater knowledge and power1 but who have used this knowledge and power only to depress them1 and to make them serve the interests of intelligent greed and lust4 ,the negro1 religious1 but full of superstition and sensuousness1 whose religion consists largely in seeing visions and dreaming dreams1 and singing songs of a heaven they are unfit for--a religion1 too1 which has been almost utterly divorced from morality4 ,as ,general ,armstrong says3 8,the story of the devout old ,auntie who would go to the communion service1 and not let one poor old goose 7that she had stolen7 come between her and her blessed ,lord1 shows how little a broken commandment disturbs the peace of the unenlightened40 ,the ,indian1 with a vague and dreamy notion of a ,great ,spirit1 and a happy hunting ground1 and a definite fear of the medicine men1 who send evil spirits to possess them1 and drive away disease with a dance4 ,the ,chinaman1 with the remains of an ancient civilization1 which has taught him to imitate and to worship his ancestors and to burn ,josh-sticks to ,confucius1 and1 though temperate as to the use of alcoholic liquors1 has learned the worse drunkenness of the opium pipe1 and to whom the thought of a ,saviour from sin1 and a life of doing good1 is an unheard-of gospel4 ,but we may not dwell longer here4 ,this depth of need may only be hinted at4 ,that it is real and pressing1 no one can doubt4 ,it is a claim which these races have in common with all who are in want4 ,we merely ask the question3 ,can you find needs more real1 degradations more deep1 and therefore claims more pressing1 than these we need only not shut our eyes to see1 for which we need not cross the ocean1 nor even our own continent--the needs of the three happier lot than to be permitted to give my life to this field4 ,it seems to me so unmistakably the work of ,christ40 ,i met in the report one name with which ,i am familiar1 and it occurred to me ,,extracts4 ,from a paper read by ,,mr4 ,j4 ,h4 ,,alley1 of ,boston1 before the ,essex ,south ,conference4 ,the writer testifies1 from his own observations1 as to ,the ,africans in ,africa4 ,the ,african1 in his native land1 is little known by us2 but a year among that people gave me opportunities for observation4 ,they are far from being the stupid race we so often hear them called4 ,keen at a bargain1 they are often a match for some of us in that boasted ,yankee trait4 ,apt to learn1 quick to understand and to appreciate advantages1 they are a people easy to assume and appropriate the best results of civilization--brave in the defense of their rights and homes1 yet not aggressive1 except when forced by circumstances and their teachings4 ,we forget the whole history of this people in looking only at some particular phase or trait4 ,their land1 the field of the slave-stealer for centuries1 has been the scene of cruelty1 fraud1 and all the worst forms of vice4 ,a people educated by so long a course of schooling in its vicissitudes might well be cruel and vicious4 ,the land has been hunted1 from ,egypt to the ,cape of ,good ,hope1 by foreign and native stealers4 ,tribes have been driven for self-protection1 or by greed of gain1 to make captures from other tribes or other parts of their own4 ,to show the debasing power of slavery and slave-hunting1 let me say that ,i have seen slaves brought to the coast from the central parts of ,africa who were the most abject specimens of the human race ,i have ever known--brought by a strong1 stalwart tribe1 noble in bearing1 and brave in war2 and these1 too1 were the same tribe or people only a comparatively short time before4 ,why this great difference8 ,a simple explanation is only required to show it all4 ,together and at peace1 they had a generous and varied diet of animal and vegetable food1 for they had extent of territory in which to hunt and gather2 but divided and at war1 fighting for self-protection1 one party gained the supremacy4 ,then the other were a defeated people2 circumscribed within small limits1 unable to hunt1 they were soon confined to a vegetable diet alone1 and then to a single kind1 and often to a few simple roots2 courage gone1 they were reduced to servitude and slavery1 and brought to a market4 ,this is no new theory1 for the same effects have followed the same causes over and over again4 ,after references to the evils of slavery in this land1 and the good to be accomplished by it under the ,divine overruling1 follows this ,thrilling ,incident4 ,one of the most thrilling incidents of the late war was one in which ,i was an observer and part participant4 ,i never more wished for the powers of a great painter than then1 or even now1 for ,i can see it to-day as vividly as when it occurred1 fourteen years ago2 for to me it seemed to contain a history of slavery1 embodied in a single act4 ,the army1 in suddenly swinging round1 had enclosed within its lines a large number of slaves who could not be taken further ,south before this was done4 ,as we could not encumber ourselves with the women and children1 the steamers bringing supplies for the army were prepared to take them to ,washington4 ,a very large steamer was brought as near the shore as possible1 and a plank gangway1 some fifteen feet in length1 and at an angle of about #de1 was laid from the shore to the entryport of the steamer4 ,just back from the shore1 the bluff1 at about the same angle1 rose some #ajj feet1 and this bluff and the plain above were occupied and covered by some three or four thousand slaves4 ,all being made ready1 the order was given for embarkation2 the women and children were to go on board first4 ,for some moments no one started1 and then a single figure1 that of a woman of some sixty years1 was seen slowly advancing alone up the plank2 no one else followed4 ,a perfect hush seemed to hang over the scene1 as if some great event was to take place1 and if ever an emblematic scene was enacted it was here4 ,slowly the bent form went forward1 bearing the weight of years of toil in the field--years of bodily and heart suffering such as you and ,i never knew1 and pray ,god never may4 ,her face1 her whole frame1 was a perfect picture of a doubt4 ,all eyes seemed to watch her in silence2 officers and men waited--they probably knew not for what2 her own people--as though she was their 8path-finder40 ,at last she reached the side of the steamer2 the open port was right before her1 and just then it seemed to her as the open portal to all her heart's longings1 and ,god's open door4 ,she and her race had poured1 for long years1 their tales of trial and suffering into ,his ear1 8who never slumbers nor sleeps40 ,was this the answer to her prayers8 ,that seemed to be the question of her heart all the way up4 ,suddenly the bent form straightened1 the homely1 wrinkled face glowed with a new light1 her coarse1 ragged garb was a royal robe1 as she turned and looked towards her people1 raising her hand and eyes to heaven1 and exclaiming1 in tones so loud and clear that they reached every ear1 and made the very hills ring3 8,i's free6 ,thank ,god1 ,i's free6 ,come on60 ,for a single instant there was perfect silence1 and then cheer on cheer rent the air1 and1 with a shout1 the rest followed up the gangway till the steamer was full4 ,it was1 indeed1 their way to liberty and happiness even in this life1 and by such efforts as this ,association is making and aiding1 shall it not be to the life to come8 ,the paper closes with a plea for the liberal support of our work among the freedmen1 enforced by ,two ,examples of ,liberality4 ,about giving1 let me relate two incidents and ,i close1 for if they appeal to you as they did to me they disappointed when the ,,missionary comes1 not to read of a revival in your school10 ,i felt like saying to her3 8,dear1 praying mother1 if you could be here one week1 you would go home rejoicing1 even though there were no revival40 ,as the years go by1 there is less inclination here to come in flocks to the ,lord's side1 or to be led into the kingdom by impulse or excitement4 ,our students act more and more upon the spirit of the motto that hangs in each of our buildings--8,let every one that nameth the name of ,christ depart from iniquity40 ,they look upon religion less as a ,sunday garment1 and more as a robe of righteousness1 that transforms our selfish natures into earnest1 self-denying lives of obedience4 ,let me give a week's religious duties4 ,sunday1 two of our young men preach in an adjoining town4 ,quite a number go out to neighboring ,sunday-schools1 and return about eleven o'clock1 when our preaching service begins4 ,our pastor1 a graduate of ,yale ,college and ,theological ,seminary1 came ,south at the close of the war1 to build the first ,congregational church in ,atlanta4 ,for years he did foundation-work there that placed it in the front rank of ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 churches4 ,the past four years he has been our college pastor4 ,with such a knowledge of the needs of this people as his experience gives1 you may have an idea of the kind of sermons we enjoy4 ,simple truth1 such as young people1 with such a history and such a future1 need1 is presented so forcibly1 that often the meal1 which immediately follows1 is almost a silent one1 owing to the serious thoughtfulness produced4 ,in the afternoon1 all meet for ,sunday-school1 which is superintended by the ,president1 who is also a graduate of ,yale4 ,as his rich tones come to us in the hymns and ,bible readings1 both in ,sunday-school and at morning devotions through the week1 we are thankful for the rare gift--a good reader4 ,in a large school-building1 of course each class can have a separate room1 and so secure a delightful hour of quiet1 uninterrupted ,sunday-school work4 ,in the evening1 all assemble in a general prayer-meeting4 ,i do not think it would be possible to give an adequate idea of this meeting1 or of similar ones in other ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 schools4 ,it is simply an inspiration to one who realizes what a part these pioneers have in shaping the destiny of their people4 ,in all the meetings ,i have attended here during these years1 ,i do not recall ever hearing the remark1 8,improve the time1 brethren10 or any other expression of like import4 ,monday1 most of the school devote the time of one recitation--three-fourths of an hour--to ,bible reading and study in classes4 ,after school there is held a female prayer-meeting of a half hour1 led by a lady teacher4 ,wednesday evening is the regular church prayer-meeting1 led by the pastor1 attendance upon which is voluntary4 ,the last half hour of school1 ,friday afternoon1 is devoted to a prayer-meeting1 led by the ,president1 and attended by the entire school4 ,this is the only meeting at which the day scholars are required to be present1 and so is the most important of all the week4 ,at its close almost every member of the school deposits in the box an envelope containing his regular weekly contribution toward paying the debt of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,a very profitable meeting is announced on ,sunday in this way3 8,on ,friday evening bring your ,bibles1 and tell us what it says about the evils of the tongue20 or1 at another time3 8,select passages referring to the ,sabbath1 the ,holy ,spirit1 ,repentance10 etc4 ,most of the family gladly come1 each reading one of his selected passages1 and discussing it4 ,familiarity with the ,bible and ,concordance is a very apparent benefit of this exercise4 ,it is also remarkable how they improve in clearness of expression1 and in confining their thoughts to one point4 ,best of all is the broad view they get of ,bible truth1 by looking at it from all sides4 ,no disputed points--as ,baptism or ,perseverance of the ,saints--are discussed in this ,bible exercise1 or in ,sunday-school1 or any other religious meeting4 ,no ,baptist or ,methodist need fear being proselyted in ,atlanta ,university4 ,saturday evening is the teachers' prayer-meeting of a half hour4 ,the best test of the religious interest is the number of voluntary students' meetings4 ,sunday evening1 just before the general meeting of an hour1 the young men always gather for another hour in a meeting of their own4 ,the burden of this meeting is praying for the ,spirit's blessing on the sermon and ,sunday-school1 and pleading for ,his presence in the general meeting that follows4 ,there are many other students' meetings1 among both the young men and women1 whose interest1 and existence even1 depend upon circumstances4 ,nearly every summer term these meetings multiply4 ,as the pupils realize they are soon to leave this peaceful home1 and for three months take on the responsibilities and trials of teachers1 they seem impelled to a new consecration4 ,many1 each year1 go out to teach for the first time1 and all feel it is a solemn undertaking4 ,another occasion for extra meetings is to plead for those so soon to leave us1 and not yet in the fold4 ,this is a hasty view of what may be seen of our religious work4 ,eternity alone will reveal the number and effect of the private personal appeals1 or of the pleading notes written to the timid ones4 ,so1 dear friends1 do not think1 because no revival is announced1 that souls are not often coming into the kingdom1 and that ,christians are not receiving a most careful culture4 ,i have often thought that the prayers of ,northern friends1 more than anything else1 have been the occasion of such a deep ,christian spirit in the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 schools4 ,think of that old lady watching the ,,missionary to see if her prayers for us were answered6 ,i once knew a man1 who was not rich1 or even a professing ,christian1 who1 for some years1 gave #cjj each year for the support of a teacher1 who1 as he said1 8would teach a knowledge of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ0 to the freedmen4 ,many of our best friends are in such haste for us to do simply church work1 that they can hardly wait in patience for us to build on an intelligent1 educational basis4 ,if ,god has so burdened hearts for the spiritual welfare of the freedmen1 may it not indicate that1 in ,his plan1 ,he may have a glorious part for them1 in bringing the nations to ,his feet8 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,photograph with ,lights and ,shades4 ,,mr4 ,,john ,,mcintosh1 ,,teacher1 ,,athens4 ,the lights and shades are the things which make the photograph appear natural2 and so1 in attempting to give a true1 and thus natural1 picture of my field of labor1 ,i must give the lights and shades4 ,but1 in order that my picture may leave a favorable impression upon the mind1 ,i will first give the shades1 and then1 the lights4 ,i came to this place ,october #fth1 #ahgg4 ,on the first day only two pupils met me1 and the increase1 during this and the following months of the same year1 was so very small that ,i began to be discouraged4 ,i called several educational meetings1 and1 to my surprise1 there was no response4 ,i became still more discouraged4 ,failing to get as large a day-school as ,i desired1 ,i offered my services at night1 for one dollar per month each to those who could not come in the day4 ,a few accepted the offer1 and when these few became weary in well-doing and fainted by the way1 ,i offered to teach at night1 free of charge1 any young man who was not able to pay his tuition4 ,only one accepted this offer4 ,i then offered to teach vocal music1 free of charge1 to any who would meet me every ,saturday4 ,the first ,saturday1 none came2 the second1 eight came1 far behind time2 and this has been the greatest number that has ever accepted the offer4 ,in my day-school the variety of books was large2 the number of misused books was great4 ,i had for several months to labor very hard to reduce chaos to form and order4 ,but why did ,i not have a full school all the while8 ,the assigned reasons were various4 ,many did not know whether ,i was ,baptist1 ,methodist1 or something else2 and so sectarianism kept some away2 some parents said their children were just out of school1 and their minds needed rest--these1 and many excuses less plausible1 were rendered for non-attendance4 ,after my school was pretty well established and my scholars were somewhat classified1 one other fact became apparent1 and this was1 and is1 indeed1 a sad fact1 viz43 in the acquisition of knowledge1 the teacher is considered one distinct party1 the parent another1 and the child another4 ,sad fact that1 in the pleasant and most beneficial work1 teacher1 parent1 and scholar are not one4 ,when ,christmas-day came1 most of my patrons said3 8,it is ,christmas1 and there should be no school for one week20 and1 indeed1 ,i had but little4 ,a short time ago a circus drifted down this way4 8,of course10 said many of my patrons1 8the children must go to the circus1 and omit going to school until the circus is over with02 and they went4 ,but all shade1 says the photographer1 makes no picture2 and so ,i will show the lights1 and thus complete my picture4 ,many of my pupils1 who were once1 apparently1 ignorant of what punctuality was1 have learned to be punctual4 ,those who once thought it best to be disorderly1 disrespectful1 disobedient1 careless1 idle1 and the like1 now think it their duty to act differently2 and so a much better state of things exists than formerly4 ,some months ago1 when ,i would ask a reason for working an example in a certain way1 the answer invariably was1 8because02 and if ,i asked 8because what80 the reply would be lengthened1 thus3 8because that gets the answer40 ,but now my pupils can not only work their examples1 but tell why4 ,strange to say1 my third class 7by name7 is my best class in arithmetic1 and the best scholar in this class is the smallest1 and probably the youngest--not thirteen1 perhaps4 ,this same class is very good in geography1 and1 indeed1 as a class1 good in all their studies4 ,my class in composition1 for three months1 have been endeavoring to understand the theory of composition1 and now they are writing1 or learning to write1 essays according to the theory which they have learned4 ,a few in the class compose very well already4 ,in nearly all of my classes1 strange to say1 the dark pupils are the ones that stand at the head4 ,in composition1 good morals1 geography1 reading1 grammar1 writing1 the leading scholars are dark--dark in color1 but bright in intellect4 ,i think it must be acknowledged that color has no influence over mind4 ,i have several grown men1 who have left their farms in the country that they may attend school and receive instruction1 which they may impart to others4 ,they are getting along fairly4 ,when ,i asked my scholars what ,i should write concerning them1 they said1 with one accord1 8,the truth1 and nothing but the truth20 and ,i think ,i have done just as they said4 ,clouds still hang over me1 but they are not so dark as they were some months ago4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,alabama4 ,dedication of ,emerson ,institute4 ,,mr4 ,b4 ,f4 ,,koons1 ,,principal1 ,,mobile4 ,since the burning of ,emerson ,institute in #ahgf1 our school has passed through some very dark clouds of discouragement4 ,all of last year1 and the first four months of this1 it occupied an old store1 very poorly fitted for school purposes4 ,in ,december last1 the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 purchased property known as ,holly's ,garden1 located near the centre of the city4 ,there are nearly three and three-quarter acres of ground1 covered by over one hundred beautiful live oak1 cedar1 and various other trees1 and near the centre of the lot is located quite a comfortable and commodious frame dwelling4 ,into this we moved the school in ,january1 and have since occupied three rooms1 some sixteen by eighteen feet square4 ,in these1 we have accommodated about one hundred pupils4 ,readers of the ,,missionary will recall the account in the ,march number of the breaking ground for a new school building upon this lot ,december #bfth4 ,since that time the proposed structure has steadily grown1 and on the #cjth of ,april we were able to pronounce it completed4 ,it is a well constructed two-story brick building1 #cdfd1 with wings at the centre of each side #ajba4 ,the lower story is divided into two school rooms1 #bhca feet1 and between these is what may be called a hallway1 divided into four hat and cloak rooms4 ,from this floor there are two stairways1 occupying the wings1 and leading to the second story4 ,at the head of each of these is a commodious hat and cloak room1 through which the pupils pass as they enter the chapel1 or large school-room1 of the second floor4 ,this room is #cadh2 at one end1 on each side of the teacher's desk1 are doors leading into two recitation rooms1 each #aeae4 ,the building is surmounted by a very neat belfry1 which awaits the new bell daily expected from ,new ,york1 via the ocean4 ,the original plan was to place above the whole a weather-vane in the shape of a large gold quill1 but just as it arrived here from ,new ,york the railroad depot was burned1 and with it our quill4 ,we sincerely hope that the burning of this is not an indication of the fate of our building4 ,,the ,,dedication4 ,at last the #ast of ,may arrived1 the day set apart for the dedication of our new building2 and to the teachers and pupils1 and all friends of the school1 it was a glad day indeed4 ,just in proportion as the former days of the school were dark1 so this was bright and joyous4 ,it seemed that the sun never shone more clearly1 that the sky was never brighter1 and that all nature rejoiced with us4 ,at an early hour the people began to gather1 and at eleven o'clock1 the doors of the new building were thrown open1 and the chapel was soon filled by an eager1 expectant multitude4 ,a few moments later the school1 about one hundred in number1 filed in1 and took seats in front and to the right of the platform4 ,upon this were seated ,rev4 ,drs4 ,burgett and ,walden1 pastors of the ,first and ,third ,presbyterian ,churches of ,mobile2 ,rev4 ,w4 ,s4 ,alexander1 of ,straight ,university1 ,new ,orleans1 and ,rev4 ,wm4 ,h4 ,ash1 pastor of the ,congregational ,church of ,mobile3 and to the left were several ladies of ,mobile1 invited guests2 the ,rev4 ,mr4 ,owens1 pastor of one of the ,baptist ,churches2 ,dr4 ,murrell1 a leading physician of the city2 ,mr4 ,wheeler1 the oldest merchant of ,mobile2 ,d4 ,s4 ,richardson1 ,principal of ,mobile ,military ,academy1 and others4 ,the exercises were opened by a chant--the #abast ,psalm--sung by the school2 appropriate passages of ,scripture were read by ,rev4 ,mr4 ,walden1 and prayer was offered by ,rev4 ,mr4 ,ash4 ,the little folks then sang 8,marching ,on60 after which a short oration was delivered by one of the boys of the school1 and an essay read by one of the girls4 ,one spoke of the past1 and the other1 of the present and future of our school4 ,after this1 the principal gave a short history of the school1 and in a few words explained the object for which it was established1 and the aims of the ,american ,missionary ,association in the ,south4 ,we told them that we are here for no political ends1 but that our whole aim is to cultivate the minds and hearts of our pupils1 to lift them up to higher planes of true manhood and womanhood1 and to fit them for usefulness to themselves1 to their people1 to their employers1 to all with whom they come in contact1 to the world1 and especially to ,god4 ,that our aim is to send forth cultivated and ,christian hearts1 endowed with the nobler aims and aspirations in life1 and fitted for efficient work in the vineyard of our ,master4 ,if mistakes had been made in the past by workers under the ,association1 it was not in accordance with the will of its officers1 their expressed wish being that we ignore politics4 ,that ours is a mission work1 and finally1 that if the people of the ,south and we have not fully understood each other in the past1 we hope that in the future we may know each other better4 ,as for us1 we earnestly and sincerely ask the sympathy and co-operation of the ,christian people of the ,south2 we need it4 ,the school then sang one of the ,jubilee ,songs1 8,we shall walk through the valley and shadow of death10 after which ,mr4 ,alexander offered the dedicatory prayer4 ,the original plan was to have one regular address1 and possibly a few words from others present1 but the plan was changed1 and it was concluded to have an informal talk from the invited guests1 the colored ministers present1 and others1 and as the programme was carried out it became more and more evident that the latter was a fortunate choice4 ,dr4 ,burgett1 pastor of the ,first ,presbyterian ,church1 ,mobile1 was first called upon4 ,he said3 8,i fully endorse all the efforts of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and congratulate it1 and all present to-day1 because of its high and praiseworthy efforts1 its success in the past1 the immediate present1 and the bright prospects of the future4 ,i have visited the school in former years1 and never heard better recitations anywhere1 nor saw greater advancement40 ,his speech was full of good thoughts1 as his talks always are2 and just before he closed1 he turned to the teachers1 and said3 8,i cannot understand the composition of a man who will oppose your efforts here4 ,as a representative of the ,christian people of ,mobile1 ,i speak authoritatively when ,i say you deserve their sympathy and hearty co-operation1 and you have it4 ,deep down in the heart of every ,christian here1 there is a kindly feeling for you and your work40 ,the next person called upon was ,rev4 ,e4 ,d4 ,taylor1 one of the oldest colored ministers of the ,m4 ,e4 ,church in this place4 ,he said 8,i have cautiously watched the movements of these teachers1 and their school work1 and ,i am convinced that they are here for lifting up of my race1 and as ,i go down the steps of life1 ,i look back upon this school1 and these teachers1 with a great deal of pleasure1 knowing that they are leading my people out from a bondage worse than slavery4 ,i thank ,god that we have these friends to help us40 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,bryant1 a former pupil of ,atlanta ,university1 spoke of the many thousands of children taught in the ,south1 as the direct result of the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 through its teachers and pupils4 ,some of the white brethren expressed much surprise at the figures he presented1 and were astonished at the magnitude of the work1 both direct and indirect1 of the ,association4 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,walden said3 8,deep down in my heart there is a little niche held sacred to the memory of that good old mother who cared for me when a child1 and for that little colored boy who was my playmate in childhood4 ,i have lost sight of them1 but their memory is still sacred1 and ,i hope to meet them in eternity4 ,there is much in common between the white and colored people of the ,south4 ,we cannot afford to be anything but friends1 for we must be saved by the same blood1 we must walk through the same #8valley and shadow of death1' and if saved1 we must spend eternity in the same kingdom40 ,and then1 turning to the teachers1 he said3 8,may ,god bless you in your noble work--,christian work4 ,yours is a ,christ-like calling1 and ,i say that you not only deserve the hearty sympathy1 co-operation1 and support of the ,christian people of the ,south1 but you have it4 ,i repeat it1 you have it40 ,at this point all sang1 8,hold the ,fort40 ,dr4 ,murrell said3 8,i endorse every word of ,drs4 ,burgett and ,walden1 but ,i feel just a little jealous1 as ,i would like to stand in the place of those who have contributed to erect this building2 and if ,i had the means1 ,i would have just such a building in every county in ,alabama4 ,i heartily feel with you1 and ask ,god to bless you40 ,after the exercises closed1 he showed us his good will by offering his professional skill to the teachers free of charge4 ,mr4 ,wheeler was not in the habit of making speeches1 but he heartily sympathized with us in our work1 and wished us a great deal of success4 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,owens said3 8,my heart is full of joy to-day at being able to be here4 ,i can only endorse all that has been said40 ,and1 after the exercises were over1 he showed his sincerity by asking me to meet his people in their church1 and talk to them of our work4 ,many good words were spoken by ,rev4 ,mr4 ,ash1 and ,rev4 ,mr4 ,evans1 of ,state ,street ,m4 ,e4 ,church4 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,wilson1 of ,little ,zion ,church1 was called upon1 and said3 8,since listening to ,dr4 ,burgett1 and others1 whose words were like drops of gold1 ,i must decline4 ,i am like the uncultivated pear-tree which ,dr4 ,burgett spoke of4 ,education knows education1 therefore ,i must keep silent lest ,i betray myself40 ,mr4 ,alexander1 as the closing speaker1 made some very happy remarks4 ,he told the colored people that by trying to get on too fast1 and to begin at the top instead of the bottom1 and by seeking to fill positions which they could not1 they had set themselves back twenty-five years4 ,he advised them to claim the right to nothing till they had earned that right2 to work patiently1 and wait for results4 ,a spirit of earnestness and sincerity pervaded all the exercises1 and1 as the old colored man said1 the words that fell from the lips of ,dr4 ,burgett1 and others1 were truly drops of gold1 utterances from the depths of sincere hearts1 and all went away feeling that it had been good to be present1 and that during those three hours a new era had dawned upon the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 in this city4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,church and the ,literary ,club4 ,,rev4 ,,william ,h4 ,,ash1 ,,mobile4 ,i found my church in rather a discouraging condition1 when ,i came in ,november last2 since that time1 ,i have been greatly encouraged to see the work prospering in my hands4 ,my congregation has increased to three times the number which ,i found when ,i came to ,mobile1 and principally of people who have never visited our church before4 ,but the great difficulty is that ,i am not able to hold a permanent congregation of the better class1 or to reach the young people1 because of the want of a church with better facilities for the needed work4 ,the ,sabbath-school has increased from about a dozen to forty scholars4 ,this is remarkable1 because one half of the time ,i have had no one to assist me in the work of teaching4 ,four have united with the church1 one of whom is a young lady1 who promises to be of great service to the church4 ,the prayer-meetings have been kept up well1 considering that my members are hard laboring people1 and there is a growth in spirituality and purity of life1 such as is consistent with the ,bible4 ,it is a custom in the fairs here to have a table devoted to the punch-bowl1 and different kinds of wines1 to raise money for the church or minister's salary2 but my church is a model so far as temperance is concerned1 feeling that it cannot encourage a demon that destroys the happiness of so many homes1 both ,north and ,south4 ,another fact1 to show the influence of our church1 is the organization of a literary club among the young people1 which has proven a success4 ,about three months ago1 ,i sent out notices to the ministers1 and some of the better class of colored people1 to meet at my church for this purpose2 an organization was completed1 and since that we have met from church to church4 ,last night the club gave its first special entertainment4 ,it was certainly a credit to the members who took part1 and compared well with similar entertainments which ,i have seen in ,new ,england4 ,the following notice is from the ,mobile ,news3 8,,the ,,aristotle ,,literary ,,club4--,this club1 whose members are among the most cultivated of ,mobile's colored citizens1 gave its first entertainment1 last night1 at ,st4 ,emmanuel ,church1 at eight o'clock4 ,the exercises consisted of literary and musical recitations1 debates1 etc4 ,the programme was a choice one1 and the large audience in attendance enjoyed the occasion very much4 ,the #8,aristotles' are the true representatives--or rather1 the best representatives--of the colored population in our city1 and we bid them ,god-speed in their earnest efforts to elevate themselves above the low standard that generally prevails among our colored people40 99 99 99 99 99 ,montgomery--,swayne ,school--,a ,year's ,work--,closing experiences6--experiences which ,i should deeply regret to have stricken from my life4 ,how vividly do ,i recall that sunny morning1 the first day of ,october1 #ahgg1 as ,i stood upon the steps of 8,swayne ,school0 building1 with five lady teachers at my side1 while before us1 in almost military lines1 were drawn up some three hundred colored children and youth4 ,these were our pupils4 ,what a work lay before us6 ,we have been repeatedly told1 since our arrival1 that the general feeling was1 8,no woman can control this school40 ,we1 too1 knew1 in the depths of our hearts1 that without ,divine aid1 we should utterly fail4 ,but ,god has been true to ,his promises1 and has given us a quiet1 happy and successful year in our work1 and one full of kindly1 appreciative testimony from those among whom we have labored4 ,our school1 with only a few days' notice1 closed half a month earlier than we had expected4 ,this1 of course1 interfered greatly with preparations for the closing exercises4 ,besides1 two or three ,sunday-school ,may festivals and picnics had been previously arranged to take place the same week1 and so many of the pupils were absent2 but we did the best we could1 under the circumstances1 each teacher having in her own room reviews and examinations of her classes1 which have borne abundant testimony to the earnest1 faithful and kindly work they have done4 ,on ,thursday night we had an exhibition in the ,congregational ,church4 ,it was a lovely moonlight night4 ,the church was crowded to its utmost capacity2 many1 indeed1 were unable to gain admittance1 so great was the throng4 ,the exercises1 consisting of declamations1 essays1 recitations1 and songs1 were listened to with great interest and apparent delight4 ,one young woman read an essay upon ,p4 ,p4 ,bliss1 whose visit here is lovingly remembered1 closing with reciting the last hymn he set to music3 8,i know not what awaits me2 ,god kindly vails mine eyes40 ,the ,secretary of the ,city ,board of ,education1 now acting ,superintendent1 and another member of the ,board1 were present the entire evening1 and expressed gratification at what they had seen and heard4 ,as they passed out of the church1 they were heard to remark to each other3 8,that was good40 8,yes1 it was good40 ,i will close in the words which one of the colored boys printed in large letters in colored do a pleasant thing1 and do it gracefully1 they proved the evening before our departure4 ,the ,sunday previous1 we had had a business-meeting of the church1 and at its close one of the brethren requested me to leave them1 as they had some business on hand in which my absence would assist them more than my presence4 ,of course1 we inferred from this that 8something was up02 but were unable to discover what it was4 ,nothing happening1 however1 until the close of the ,wednesday night prayer-meeting1 we had all come to the conclusion that whatever was intended had probably proved impracticable4 ,we were sitting together at the ,home1 talking over the experiences of the year1 when the notes of a guitar struck our ears1 and a few voices began singing the 8,sweet ,bye-and-,bye0 very softly and sweetly4 ,i supposed that some of the people had come down to give us a little serenade1 and stepped to the door to return thanks for the pleasure the song had afforded4 ,when ,i opened the door1 instead of the half-dozen singers ,i expected1 a perfect throng of merry faces met me4 ,the yard was crowded1 and they seemed to reach out indefinitely down the road4 ,i had barely sufficient presence of mind to ask them in1 and then met the wave of increasing congratulations with very much the sort of feeling with which one meets a good big wave at the sea-shore4 ,it was exhilarating1 but bewildering4 ,an enormous freezer of ice-cream1 and strawberries1 raspberries1 and cakes ad infinitum1 were brought in1 and our rooms were soon crowded with about one hundred and fifty as happy-looking people as ,i ever saw4 ,young and old1 grave and gay1 ,christians and worldlings1 ,methodists and ,baptists1 as well as ,congregationalists--it was a thoroughly representative gathering4 ,our own people were out in force1 and there were prominent members of all the other colored churches4 ,for about two hours they amused themselves and us with conversation1 singing1 and playing4 ,there was not a rude word or a boorish action4 ,it was a gathering that would have done credit1 in its behavior1 to any community4 ,they made the pastor and his wife1 with the teachers1 gather together and partake of the delicacies so generously provided1 and then attacked them 7the delicacies1 not the teachers7 on their own account1 with right good will4 ,for two hours they made the house echo with merry laughter and with singing--patriotic1 sentimental1 and religious--and then1 after a siege of hand-shaking1 which made me realize somewhat the trials our popular ,presidents have to undergo1 and with many pleasant words of kindly appreciation1 they took their leave4 99 99 99 99 99 ,another ,female ,missionary ,needed4 ,the work at ,montgomery stands greatly in need of more visiting than the pastor can accomplish4 ,while the church and congregation are small1 the field includes the whole colored population of the city and suburbs--not far from #aj1jjj souls--and no form of labor seems so likely to be fruitful as the work of a good woman in the homes of the people4 ,one of our good teachers has kept up a ,bible-reading in one of the poorer neighborhoods1 and has thus reached a number whose ignorant prejudice renders them inaccessible to the ,congregational minister4 ,she has been able1 also1 to reach the hearts and homes of many others1 and has shown herself to have the power to win their affection and sympathy1 and lead them to higher thoughts and purposes4 ,the attempt to combine this labor with her school duties1 and the vexatious responsibilities of the matron of the ,home1 had its natural result in broken health and depressed spirits4 ,is there some church or society1 or generous individual1 who1 in addition to regular contributions1 would be willing to provide for the maintenance of a 8,woman ,missionary0 in this field1 that this faithful worker may be able to use her talents more efficiently1 or1 if she cannot return1 that some other good woman may take her place8 8,but when ,he saw the multitudes1 ,he was moved with compassion on them1 because they fainted1 and were scattered abroad1 as sheep having no shepherd4 ,then saith ,he them would do credit to any school at the ,north4 ,there is a good promise for the future of the church in the children1 many of whom already give evidence of a change of heart4 ,at a recent 8praise-meeting10 we had testimony from twenty-five different persons1 who mentioned special causes for gratitude4 ,the people all seem eager to be helped1 and to improve every opportunity4 ,we enjoy our work more and more4 ,it is a blessed1 blessed work6 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 8,,california ,,chinese ,,mission40 ,auxiliary to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,,president3 ,rev4 ,j4 statement respecting the method pursued at ,oakland1 where his labors are specially centred4 ,i am sure that it will be read with interest1 the very simplicity with which details are given rendering more vivid and distinct the picture4 8,,oakland1 ,,cal4 8,,rev4 ,w4 ,c4 ,,pond3 8,dear ,friend--,as ,i am requested to give you a little outline about our manner of conducting the ,christian work in ,oakland1 ,i will try to do so4 ,on ,sunday morning1 those brethren who can get out in time from their occupations generally attend church1 but this number is comparatively small1 owing to the way in which they are situated4 ,our ,chinese ,sunday-school is held immediately after the morning service in the church1 and continues till fifteen minutes of two ,p4,m4 ,the average number of scholars during the last few months was about fifty-five4 ,mr4 ,e4 ,p4 ,sanford is our superintendent1 and ,i am the assistant4 ,the school is generally opened by singing two hymns in ,chinese and two in ,english1 followed by a prayer4 ,after the latter1 each teacher proceeds to take charge of his own class2 and when the lesson ends1 passages of ,scripture are recited by most of the ,bible-reading pupils4 ,then the notices are given for all the exercises of the following week4 ,the ,lord's ,prayer is then recited in concert1 and the school is dismissed4 8,from #f4cj to #g4ae ,p4,m41 we assemble at our ,christian ,association ,room 7a small house of five rooms7 for prayer-meeting4 ,this meeting is conducted by the president of the ,association4 ,the exercises consist of singing1 praying1 and speaking from two of the members who are appointed by the president at the previous meeting4 ,after these speakers get through1 eight to ten minutes are allowed to all who wish to speak or pray4 ,the meeting is closed with the ,doxology and prayer4 ,from this meeting we go back to the chapel where we held our ,sunday-school4 ,there we open our regular ,sunday evening service4 ,the average attendance is about twenty-five4 ,the first part of this service is singing from #g4be to fifteen minutes of eight4 ,the singing is conducted by ,mr4 ,sanford1 assisted by ,miss ,l4 ,gill and ,miss ,sanford4 ,to these persons we are greatly indebted for their kindness in teaching us1 especially ,mr4 ,sanford1 whose labors for us are unspeakably great4 ,after the singing and prayer1 ,mr4 ,sanford takes the ,bible4 ,he then reads1 and explains to them in ,english2 ,i take the same lesson and explain to them in ,chinese1 after which the meeting is closed with a prayer in ,chinese4 ,on ,wednesday evening our prayer-meeting is conducted entirely by myself4 ,its average attendance is about the same as that of ,sunday evening4 ,thursday evening ,i have the whole ,bible-class1 consisting of from ten to eighteen pupils4 ,beside this ,bible reading we also have another very interesting ,bible exercise in the ,association ,room every evening throughout the whole week1 with the exception of ,saturday and ,sunday evenings4 ,this exercise commences immediately after the brethren get back from school and continues until ten ,p4,m4 ,we begin by reading and explaining the ,scripture alternately4 ,if one fails to explain his verse correctly1 the one who sits next to him follows it up1 and if he fails also1 the third1 fourth1 and so on to the last one in the class4 ,if he fails to succeed1 ,i then explain the verse to them again4 ,when this lesson is through1 ,i read and explain to them the new lesson for the following evening4 ,then this exercise is closed with a prayer in ,english by one of the brethren successively4 8,yours respectfully1 ,,jee ,,gam40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 8,,king ,,david',s ,,dance0 ,,and ,,the 8,,holy ,,march40 ,the signification of the above terms may not be familiar to all our readers1 and hence a description of them may prove of interest4 ,they are religious exercises1 and constitute a part of the regular ,sabbath worship of the colored ,baptist ,church of ,mount ,vernon1 ,ala4 ,the members of this church are very emotional1 and exceedingly demonstrative in their religion4 ,the order of services each ,sabbath are as follows3 ,a ,union ,sabbath-school is held from nine to half-past ten ,a4,m41 after which one of the leading brethren conducts a prayer-meeting for about an hour4 ,then preaching begins4 ,the young minister preaches a sermon first1 and he is followed by the old minister1 who preaches another sermon from the same text4 ,mourners are then called for1 the doors are opened to receive members1 and other necessary business transacted1 after which the benediction is pronounced4 ,it is then about three ,p4,m4 ,instead of going home1 the members all remain1 move the benches aside1 and prepare for 8,king ,david's ,dance0 and the 8,holy ,march40 ,the first consists in forming a circle--or 8ringing up10 as they term it--joining hands1 and jumping up and down1 keeping time to the tune of some lively 8spiritual song40 ,this performance is carried on for some time1 and then they march the 8,holy ,march40 ,this is done by forming in single file1 each one placing his hand on the other one's shoulder1 and marching around and around1 going through a number of bodily contortions1 better seen than described4 ,they march and dance alternately until about sundown1 when1 completely exhausted1 they go home4 ,during these exercises they shout and scream vehemently4 ,the above is a true statement of the manner in which the colored people here1 of the ,baptist connection1 worship4 ,the so-called 8,king ,david's ,dance0 would remind one more of the war-dance of some savage tribe4 ,several other churches in the neighboring settlements carry on these performances4--,the ,southern ,sentinel4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,negro ,,religion4 ,negro religion is as varied as the character and grade of its professors3 some as dignified as ,african princes1 others as wild as children playing at church4 ,and yet1 who shall say that either extreme is the more acceptable to ,him who looks through outward demonstrations at the hearts of worshippers8 ,one of their own utterances perhaps best expresses the idea3 8,we has our own ways ob doin' things2 white folks don't allus understand us1 but de ,lord seems to get along with us putty well1 an' dat's all we need care fur40 ,white folks do not understand1 and certainly cannot but be amused at seeing an old black woman1 whose gray wool is bound up in a brilliant turban1 moving in slow1 undulating waves of a mystic dance up and down the church aisles1 and round its altar1 as she chants forth her testimony to 8de leadin's of de ,lord all dese eighty years02 but they can quite appreciate the reverence which sends every one to his knees at the words1 8,let us pray10 and sometimes wish that the custom might prove possible of transplantation4 ,quaint and racy words sometimes come from these colored preachers4 8,ta'n't were present at a communion service in which there was nothing calculated to draw a smile4 ,tears of apparently genuine earnestness stood in many eyes1 and suppressed sobs mingled with the rich1 quaint hymns in many parts of the room4 ,the preacher was a young man1 who drew a moving picture of the crucifixion1 which1 in its pathos1 simplicity1 and correct diction1 would have done honor to any white preacher in the land4 ,but one point1 that of the substitution of w for r1 marked the speaker as one of that subject race1 which1 in thus slowly rising from barbarism1 while it loses much that is amusing to the merely curious observer1 is steadily gaining in what pertains to the dignity of manhood1 and the well-being of immortal souls4--,illustrated ,christian ,weekly4 99 99 99 99 99
