,association4 99 99 99 99 99 ,as will be seen elsewhere1 our new missionaries arrived at ,freetown1 ,sierra ,leone1 ,march #bc;d1 just one month from the date of their leaving ,new ,york by steamer for ,england4 ,they had only the ordinary discomforts of a sea voyage1 and reached their destination in good condition4 ,their first impressions of the new field seem to be quite favorable1 and their desire to be to enter on the new work at once4 ,we look to the ,lord of the harvest for ,his blessing on the lives and labors of all those who have gone from us to the ,mendi ,mission4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we read with unfeigned regret of the disasters and delays which the ,english and ,scotch missionaries have met with1 in attempting to begin their new work in ,central ,africa4 ,the expedition of the ,london ,missionary ,society was1 from ,july to ,january last1 trying to push its way with its supplies to its destination on ,lake ,tanganyika1 but was obliged to encamp for the rainy season at ,kirasa1 only about one-third of the way4 ,it is hoped that during the present year they may reach the lake1 and establish themselves there4 ,the mission of the ,free and ,united ,presbyterian ,churches is in danger of being driven from its station at ,livingstonia1 on ,lake ,nyanza1 by so insignificant an enemy as a fly4 ,the bite of the tsetse1 deadly to all domestic animals1 has sadly impoverished them1 impeded their industrial operations1 and curtailed their usefulness in advancing the civilization of ,africa4 ,the station may have to be moved4 ,a new site must be sought with great care1 which will not be liable to this pest4 ,in ,south ,africa another missionary institution has been endangered by the ,caffre ,war1 three ,english officials having been murdered not far away2 while missionaries ,smith and ,o',neill1 of the ,church ,missionary ,society in ,central ,africa1 have been killed by hostile natives1 on their way back to ,uganda1 the capital of ,king ,m'tesa4 ,we believe that our forces at ,good ,hope and ,avery are not liable to any of these perils4 ,the station is accessible and reached2 no deadly venom is in the insect life around them1 nor are there unfriendly nations near4 ,only the dangers common to such regions are there to threaten them4 ,and yet we must not set our hopes too high1 or base them too confidently on any of the uncertainties which the future still holds4 ,in a land of delays we know not what may hinder2 amid a thousand possibilities1 we cannot tell what peril lurks4 ,our hope is in the ,lord--that ,he will suffer no evil to befall them1 but give them strength for patient continuance in well-doing4 ,our friends at ,talladega ,college miss their names from the ,institutions we mentioned in the ,may ,,missionary1 as needing greatly1 and at once1 enlarged accommodations4 ,we did not mention their wants1 as indeed we did not other important needs2 and perhaps the reason was1 as they suggest1 because1 appreciating the strain laid upon our resources this year1 they have considerately refrained from pressing the case which1 last year1 they laid before us4 ,they say 8,it is difficult for us to see how any institutions in the ,south can be in more pressing need than we of a new dormitory40 99 99 99 99 99 ,mr4 ,whidby's fears that a colored delegate to the ,atlanta ,sunday-school ,convention would be either 8lionized or snubbed0 to that extent that it would be better for him not to come1 proved to be not well grounded4 ,the warned man did not come2 but1 fortunately1 another did1 of similar complexion1 and that from ,texas4 ,he was received and treated just as the others were1 and he behaved as well4 ,the fact is1 they were much busier devising for ,sunday-school work than applying a color metre to each other's faces4 ,we are very glad the ,texas brother was there4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,principles ,,and ,,plans4 --,this ,association does not affirm that races1 any more than individuals1 are equal in physical or mental fibre and development4 ,some races1 as well as individuals1 are manifestly below others in some respects4 ,all that we claim is1 that all men shall be regarded as equal before ,god and the ,law2 and that hence1 in all churches of ,christ1 no distinction be made1 on account of race or color2 and also that1 in the enactment and administration of the laws of the land1 all races be equally protected in person and property1 and that whatever immunities or privileges are granted to one1 be extended to all4 --,this ,association does not found exclusively colored churches4 ,they are only exclusive because they are not exclusive4 ,they are open to all races1 and hence but few white persons unite with them4 ,but1 while the work of the ,association has been principally among the colored people in the ,south1 as being at present most accessible1 yet it has always favored the establishment of churches1 mainly white1 where the distribution of population calls for them1 and which allow colored persons freely to unite with them4 ,thus1 the early efforts of ,john ,g4 ,fee1 its first missionary in the ,south1 was in the formation of white churches in ,kentucky4 ,so1 also1 the counsel of its officers was sought and given in the organization of the ,second 7or white7 ,congregational ,church in ,chattanooga1 ,tenn4 ,its first minister was ,rev4 ,j4 ,a4 ,thome1 a life-long friend of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and at one time its agent in ,great ,britain4 ,the ,congregational ,church in ,jacksonville1 ,fla41 was organized1 and its house dedicated1 under the auspices of ,rev4 ,c4 ,l4 ,woodworth1 its ,boston ,secretary1 who spent a month in ,jacksonville preaching and laboring for that purpose4 ,not long since1 the ,association appointed a missionary in ,kentucky1 who has surveyed the field in the vicinity of ,berea ,college1 and expects to organize five or six churches1 to which he will preach in turn until each can sustain a minister4 ,these will be mainly white churches1 but open to colored people4 ,in like manner1 the ,association has promised missionary aid to a church1 of similar character1 about to be organized in ,san ,antonio1 ,texas4 --,the educational institutions of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 in the ,south are in order to its religious work in ,america and ,africa4 ,its best and most promising churches are established near the schools and colleges1 and receive intelligence and strength from them4 ,these schools furnish hundreds of ,christian teachers1 who instruct thousands of pupils in day and ,sunday-schools1 and carry a salutary influence into the homes1 churches and neighborhoods where they reside4 ,the schools and theological departments also send out many ministers and missionaries1 who carry the ,gospel to their people in the ,south and in ,africa4 --,the work of the ,association is a providential growth1 each part having a relation to the whole1 and its plans1 while at present embracing mainly the 8,despised ,races10 as they have been called1 are restricted in principle to no race or continent4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,departure ,,of ,,the 8,,azor40 ,the departure of the ,azor with the first instalment of the ,african exodus1 from ,charleston1 ,s4 ,c41 marks an epoch in the history of the colored race4 ,it may have been a question in some minds whether the freedman could be aroused by the missionary spirit4 ,by some1 even of the teachers in our schools1 fears have been felt that1 perhaps1 the call for missionaries might come and the people not be ready to respond4 ,the question is decided that1 whenever this call shall be made1 there will be no lack of men4 ,we have more to fear now from unbridled enthusiasm than from want of zeal4 ,this ,african ,exodus ,association had its origin1 undoubtedly1 among disaffected politicians1 but it soon became a sort of religious crusade4 ,it gained but little progress among the people1 until the idea was suggested that it be made a missionary enterprise4 ,from the time the ,azor sailed into the harbor until her departure1 on the #bast of ,april1 with her living freight for ,liberia1 the wharves and streets of the city were thronged with people of all sexes and ages1 eager to view the ,african 8,mayflower40 ,hundreds1 who had engaged their passages months before1 were left behind1 for want of room4 ,how long this enthusiasm will continue1 and what may be the success of this first company1 of course are questions to be answered by and by4 ,we dare not venture any prophecy1 either good or evil4 ,it is an experiment1 some features of which are not in the line of our ideas2 but if1 in the providence of ,god1 it shall prove to be to ,africa what the ,pilgrim enterprise has been to ,america1 we shall rejoice4 ,we should prefer to have a different class of emigrants undertake this work1 and lay the foundation of ,african civilization upon a broader foundation4 ,our object is to raise up men of intelligence1 and sound and broad religious principle1 for this work1 and we naturally look with some anxiety to the effect of turning loose in ,africa the freedman1 as we find him in the ,south at present4 ,we hope for the best1 however1 and shall pray for the success of the movement1 that ,god may overrule all our fears1 and make it for good4 ,this one question we are glad to have settled1 as we think it is by this movement1 that there is no lack of enthusiasm in the negro heart for his fatherland2 and that1 when the call shall come for more laborers in that field1 we shall have this enthusiasm on our side4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indian ,,boys ,,at ,,hampton4 ,visitors to ,st4 ,augustine1 ,fla41 during the last three years have been directed to ,capt4 ,pratt's ,indians as among the objects of interest in ,fort ,marion4 ,there they were carried1 as prisoners of war1 in the spring of #ahge1 after the terrible massacres which had taken place in the ,indian ,territory by the ,five ,tribes4 ,they went ,south1 each with his legs fastened to a log with chains4 ,they were filled with hatred over their real or fancied wrongs4 ,one jumped from the cars1 and was shot by the guard2 one killed himself on the way4 ,they wore only their ,indian blankets1 and had great brass hoops in their ears4 ,they knew no word of ,english4 ,it was their good fortune to fall into the hands of a ,christian army officer1 who1 by his skill in management1 and patience in seeking to do them good1 at length won their confidence1 and succeeded1 with the help of a few benevolent ladies1 in teaching them some of the simplest elements of civilization and learning4 ,a few of them can read very well4 ,at the end of their second year1 ,mrs4 ,dr4 ,caruthers1 of ,tarrytown1 ,n4 ,y41 who had been teaching among them1 determined to secure1 if possible1 the education of two young men of her class4 ,she obtained permission from the ,indian ,commission1 and raised money for the purpose4 ,other means and offers of help came in4 ,at length it was found that twenty-two of them desired to go to school4 ,they are now discharged from their imprisonment4 ,the old chiefs go back to their people1 greatly changed for the better4 ,fifteen of the young men were left at ,hampton1 ,april #acth1 to be educated in the ,normal ,institute4 ,they have begun their regular studies1 and have been detailed to various departments of work1 in shop and on farm4 ,they seem perfectly happy and contented1 and their new comrades treat them with kindness and consideration4 ,here is another of those curious comminglings1 and crossings of lines1 of which life is so full1 and yet which never cease to surprise us4 ,the ,african and the ,indian meet at ,hampton1 to be trained together1 to be intelligent citizens and ,christians1 and the teachers of their people4 ,thus the two races are brought face to face--8the two races whose past involves ,america's greatest responsibilities2 whose future1 some of her hardest problems40 ,it costs #aae to keep one of these ,indian boys at ,hampton for a year--that1 with what he is able to earn by his labor4 ,this amount has been pledged by individuals alone1 or together1 for the education of most of the number4 ,mrs4 ,caruthers1 having done so much1 has asked the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 through its ,president and its ,secretary1 to assume the tuition of one of her wards1 and the ,executive ,committee desire to do so2 and ,zone-ke-nh1 twenty-one years of age1 of the ,kiowa tribe1 will go to ,hampton1 in addition to those already there1 as the pupil of the ,association1 if some of our friends1 who may be especially interested in the elevation of the ,indians1 will make up this small amount1 and help on this work1 in which the elements are combined of romance1 beneficence1 and personality4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,sunday-,,school ,,concert4 ,nothing is more welcome in these days than new ideas for use in ,sunday-schools4 ,what to do with the ,concert1 has been a question which has perplexed teachers and superintendents year after year1 as the months come1 one after another1 in rapid succession4 ,the verses containing 8faith0 and 8hope0 and 8heaven0 must be nearly all learned now in some quarters1 and the new suggestion is1 try a ,missionary ,concert1 or1 if you please1 an ,american ,missionary ,concert4 ,but1 how shall it be done8 ,the answer is at hand4 ,the pattern1 even1 can be sent1 like ,demorest's or ,butterick's1 in paper and by mail4 ,we have one in our hands1 about six inches by eight1 four pages4 ,it consists of a series of questions and answers 7prepared originally by ,rev4 ,a4 ,e4 ,winship1 of ,somerville1 ,mass47 upon the nature and the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and we are almost surprised to find so much valuable and exact information compacted in this form1 and in so taking and interesting a shape4 ,coupled with this is a small sheet collection of eight or ten ,jubilee ,songs1 to be sung at intervals during the ,catechetical ,exercise4 ,we hear that this exercise has been used with great interest and success in several ,sunday-schools at and near ,boston2 and we commend1 most cordially1 the thought and plan to the consideration and use of ,superintendents and ,presidents of ,missionary ,societies4 ,the twenty-sixth article in the programme is a collection1 and a legend instructing generous youth how to address their gifts to us4 ,a new edition is in preparation1 or in press4 ,the questions and songs may be obtained in quantity1 on application to ,district ,secretary ,woodworth1 at the ,congregational ,house1 ,boston4 ,district ,secretary ,powell has issued recently1 from ,chicago1 an appeal to the ,sunday-schools in behalf of the 8,colored ,student's ,aid ,fund40 ,he says3 8,it is estimated that we are reaching 7by student and graduate teachers7 not less than a hundred thousand children in the ,south4 ,but there are two millions of them to be reached40 ,he urges every ,sunday-school to help in this good work4 ,to know1 is the first step toward supplying the want4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,an ,,educated ,,ministry4 ,it is quite remarkable that the uneducated ministers among the colored people of the ,south should be in such earnest sympathy with the work of educating their people4 ,occasionally1 we hear one intimate that he is a trumpet for the ,lord to 8toot0 through1 and express fear that the tone of the instrument might be injured by the application of science2 but the expression of such sentiments is rare4 ,in the dark days1 when ,states did not allow people of a certain color to read1 or any one to teach them1 preachers were born1 not made4 ,the wether of the flock put a bell around his own neck1 and led off4 ,as the ,indian who could bring home from the war-path the most scalps1 or from the hunt the greatest amount of venison or furs1 was the man for chief2 so the exhorter who could pick up the most texts of ,scripture1 and evolve from his own understanding the greatest amount of rhetoric1 and with arrows of his own manufacture pierce the largest number of souls1 was the minister by universal consent4 ,schools do not make brains2 they only develop and bring out what ,nature implanted in a man4 ,leaders by the voice of ,god need not fear those made leaders by the voice of a theological seminary4 ,they who1 by their quickness of perception1 tact and experience1 control men1 need not fear that those who depend chiefly upon ability gained from books will steal the hearts of their people4 ,now1 in saying all this1 as the expression of my own thoughts1 as well as the felt sentiments of the uneducated ministers among the colored people1 ,i have no intention of placing a low estimate upon the schools4 ,these uncultured giants might have attained to a larger growth1 if they had been supplied with good mental nourishment1 and no one feels this more than they4 ,the ,,best minister combines natural ability of a high order with liberal culture4 ,the tendency of the times is toward an educated ministry2 and although the present pastors of the flocks may be secure in their places without learning1 the next generation will insist upon education in their ministers4 ,,prof4 ,t4 ,n4 ,,chase1 ,,in ,,the ,christian ,recorder4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,atlanta ,,and ,,fisk ,,universities4 ,a recent visit to these institutions has resulted in some observations1 which may be worthy of record4 ,the location of both is unsurpassed4 ,in these cities ,atlanta and ,fisk ,universities occupy1 respectively1 two of the most commanding and beautiful sites4 ,they are seen from afar1 a perpetual reminder of the importance of the work they represent4 ,the buildings of both institutions are good2 ,jubilee ,hall surpassingly so4 ,our party approached it late in the evening1 when it was lighted from top to bottom1 as the students were studying in their rooms4 8,hallelujah60 cried one of our number1 enthusiastically1 8,god be praised for this great lighthouse in the ,south40 ,and not one of us looked upon it without emotion4 ,the teachers in both institutions are among the choicest of educated ,christian people4 ,a more intelligent1 cultivated and consecrated body of instructors it would be hard to find4 ,they are doing their work at much personal sacrifice4 ,their social privileges in both cities are few or none at all1 and some of them1 for the sake of the work they are in1 have refused tempting offers from ,northern schools4 ,they are teaching the colored race from a high sense of duty1 and are filled with a missionary enthusiasm in their work4 ,often did the eye flash and the face glow1 as they spoke of the trials and advancement of their pupils4 ,the students in these institutions are1 of course1 the flower of the colored race4 ,only those are likely to undertake so many years of study1 with the self-denials involved1 who have1 to begin with1 tolerably clear ideas of the privileges of an education1 and in whom are unusual elements of character4 ,they are procuring an education under great difficulties4 ,there are few to encourage them or aid them4 ,but they are eager to fit themselves for future usefulness1 and burdened with a longing to help their race4 ,they work1 therefore1 with an enthusiasm needing little urging or government4 ,it is not strange1 then1 that when both teacher and scholar are fired with a religious fervor1 the results should be unusually favorable4 ,among these results in both institutions1 the good order is specially noticeable4 ,at the table1 where teachers and scholars eat together1 all stand quietly till the teacher in charge takes his seat4 ,there is no loud talking or laughing1 but1 while no restraints are put on conversation1 only a gentle murmur of voices1 which does not prevent the slightest signal from being heard4 ,the least tap of a bell suffices to dismiss the hundred or more boarders from the tables4 ,in passing through the school-room at ,fisk ,university1 we noticed that no teacher was present1 though perfect order was maintained4 8,have you no instructor or monitor here10 we asked1 8to secure good order80 8,why1 no1 sir10 one replied1 wonderingly1 8we do not wish to be disorderly40 ,we could but recall certain days of our own student life when1 if our instructor chanced to step out of the room for a moment1 there were instantly missiles flying about1 and students darting here and there4 ,there is a striking degree of refinement among the students4 ,they impress one at a glance as ladies and gentlemen4 ,there is nothing about them1 in dress1 or manner or language1 to offend the most fastidious4 ,never was there a better illustration than at these institutions of the power of a ,christian education to change the whole character and appearance4 ,a cultivated soul shines out from these dark faces1 and1 in our admiration for the soul1 we totally forget the color of the skin4 ,the education of these students is rapidly progressing4 ,we must remember that most of them were born in slavery1 and have learned to read since the war4 ,a generation or two must pass before we can see the results of life-long training in schools4 ,what we now see1 however1 is sufficiently surprising4 ,it would be hard to find at the ,north better teachers or better schools than the two ,universities of which we speak2 and their influence over the pupils is marvelous4 ,many of the recitations were very fine4 ,the normal training of ,fisk ,university seemed to deserve special commendation4 ,we were also much pleased at a recitation in ,xenophon's ,memorabilia1 in which three young men were reciting to one of their own race1 a graduate of the ,university--,miss ,laura ,s4 ,cary4 ,it would not be strange if this were the first instance of the kind in the history of the world4 ,perhaps a more valuable evidence of educational progress than recitations was the correctness of speech and richness of thought manifest in the conversations and remarks of the students4 ,we were permitted to be present at a prayer-meeting1 in which students of both sexes took part freely4 ,there are few pastors in the ,north who would not be glad of such clear thought and apt expression in their meetings as we there heard4 ,the discipline of these institutions is evidently giving the pupils rare qualities of earnestness and self-reliance4 ,undoubtedly those who have these qualities inborn are the ones who are most likely to be in the schools4 ,but once in the course of study1 all the influences tend to develop a manly and persevering spirit4 ,the students are accustomed every summer to scatter through the ,south1 in search of schools4 ,these1 in most of the ,states1 they do not find ready to their hand4 ,there are few organized schools and few school-houses for the colored people outside the cities4 ,the ,university students desirous of a school must first hunt up children who will agree to come2 then secure the use of some little colored church at the cross-roads1 or1 perhaps1 of a vacant log-cabin2 then they must obtain permission of the county commissioner to teach the school4 ,it evidently requires courage and resolution to succeed under such circumstances1 and yet these students earn every summer1 in from three to five months of teaching1 about a hundred dollars apiece4 ,sometimes parents are willing and able to educate their children1 without throwing them thus on their own resources4 ,after ,fisk ,university was established1 a colored man bought land near by1 built him a comfortable house1 and made his home there1 with the express purpose of educating his large family of children4 ,but such cases are rare4 ,the youth who desire an education generally are obliged to secure the means themselves4 ,we were much touched with the story of one young lady 7as truly so as any in our ,northern seminaries71 who1 at the age of fourteen1 determined to go to ,fisk ,university1 and went to teaching till she had earned the means4 ,for five years she has been securing an education1 paying her way by teaching every summer4 ,another student was pointed out to us1 whose persistence under difficulties is still more remarkable4 ,for the work of two successive summers1 he has been had to teach about two hours at night1 for the benefit of those who could not come in the daytime4 ,we have not yet commenced night-school this year1 though it is desired by many4 ,there are many children in our neighborhood who belong to our school1 but we find it very difficult to get all1 or the most of them1 to attend school regularly4 ,we have a pretty good average attendance1 but do not at all times have the same scholars1 which causes much discord and delay4 ,the children seem to be anxious to learn1 but it is done in the midst of hardships which are uncommon to children in many other places4 ,the older people are not as much interested in the education of their children as they should be1 by a great deal4 ,only two schools for the colored children are kept up during the year in this county1 namely1 ,second ,midway and ,old ,midway4 ,there are other places ,i know of in this county1 where much might be done in the way of instructing the people in the right way1 and they would be very glad to receive it2 but the aid is wanting4 ,about two-thirds of the colored people in this county are trying to buy land1 and really some have succeeded in so doing2 but it is done by about four years' hard labor and strict economy4 ,there is very little money in this county1 and it will be so until the colored people pay for and take possession of these lands4 ,after a couple of ,it may be seen that the growth of this school was not very rapid1 from the fact that it was opposed by many of the colored people in the city4 ,but the more water they threw on this little spark1 the brighter and faster it burned1 till it has become a centre of attraction4 ,friends of this work are fast multiplying1 and the future seems bright4 ,my school is composed of some very bright and promising young men and women1 seven of whom go out every summer to teach4 ,the studies are spelling1 reading1 writing1 geography1 composition1 grammar1 and arithmetic4 ,to this work is attached a the organization of free schools by the ,state2 thereafter1 we taught the public school until last year4 ,during all these years of varying fortunes our school has steadily progressed1 until there has grown up around us a generation of young people1 not great1 nor wise1 nor learned1 only as they are compared with those who have gone before them2 but1 standing out from the blackness of darkness of twelve years ago1 they furnish a bright and hopeful outlook4 ,we organized a ,temperance society early in our work here1 and it has never died out4 ,we1 several years ago1 gave the control into the the same4 ,our ,sunday-school has always claimed our best efforts1 and we are glad to know that more than two-thirds of our older scholars are professing ,christians4 ,but the work done is but a drop deficiencies as best they can4 ,the theological students come from seven different denominations1 while their instructors represent four4 ,this is an unusual illustration of ,christian union1 and shows how much can be done1 on a simple evangelical basis1 for meeting the pressing wants of the colored population of our land4 ,the work needs to be conducted on a broad1 generous basis4 ,we can thus introduce a powerful leaven of truth and righteousness where it is especially needed4 ,the plan of instruction has been1 to meet the special wants of each individual according to his age1 his forwardness or backwardness of study1 the time that he could remain1 etc4 ,such as have enjoyed a classical education1 are encouraged to take the regular three years' course pursued in all theological examination in the grammar1 and in translation1 averaging quite as well as ordinary white students in theological institutions4 ,these students also attend the ,bible-class conducted by the president on the morning of the ,lord's day1 and his preaching service in the afternoon1 in the latter of which he has lately1 in a series of discourses1 pointed out the weakness and absurdity of modern skepticism1 as an antidote to the influence of the infidel lecturer1 popularly called 8,bob0 ,ingersoll1 who has taken up his abode in ,washington4 ,although the theological students have numbered thirty-two this year1 it so happens that but one has completed his course2 and as a distinguished clergyman who1 it was hoped1 would deliver the address at the anniversary1 failed us at too late a ,,missionary1 ,i requested ,bro4 ,fung ,affoo to give an account of it1 and received the following communication3 8,as we have not much time to teach them the ,scripture on any other evening1 we set apart ,sunday and ,wednesday evenings to teach them to read the ,bible instead of their other lessons4 ,on ,sunday we have the 8,bible-class10 commencing at half-past eleven ,a4 ,m41 and continuing for one hour and a half4 ,we sing about half an hour either in ,chinese or in ,english1 then offer a prayer1 and then read a chapter from the ,bible4 ,each verse they read after me1 then ,i translate it into ,chinese2 when through interpreting1 on each verse or paragraph ,i make some remarks which ,i have studied out during the week days4 ,after we get through the chapter1 ,i speak about ten minutes on a subject selected from that chapter beforehand1 then one of our brethren offers prayer2 we then unite in singing the ,doxology1 and close with the ,lord's ,prayer4 ,our exercises on ,wednesday evening are similar to those we have on ,sundays4 ,it gives me much encouragement in the work seeing that they like to read the ,bible more than ever before4 ,formerly only about one-half of the school attended the ,bible-class on ,wednesday evenings1 but now they number nearly as many on that evening as on any other evening of the week4 ,it seems as though their hatred of ,christianity becomes less4 ,of course1 many come to read the ,bible only for the sake of learning the ,english1 but in time we hope1 when they know the truth of ,god1 they will change their mind and heart1 as some of them have already done1 who are now on ,christ's side1 battling for the ,lord40 8,,fung ,,affoo40 ,the attendance at this ,sabbath noon service averages about fifty-five4 ,of course1 my pastoral duties render it impossible for me ever to be present4 ,i do not think1 however1 that my presence would add anything to the worship or the work4 ,i assist the helpers in their preparation1 but ,i believe that in dealing with their countrymen they are more skilful than ,i could be1 even if ,i could speak ,chinese4 ,it needs an experience in heathenism1 to enable one to reach the heathen in the most efficient way4 ,god chooses saved sinners to be messengers of salvation to those still lost4 ,i think that the programme of this service1 as ,bro4 ,fung ,affoo gives it1 illustrates this fact4 ,it is not one of my planning--not the one ,i should have chosen2 but as ,i carefully consider it1 ,i ask1 8,what could be better fitted for those for whom the service is arranged80 ,rev4 ,t4 ,m4 ,oviatt1 whose missionary labors among the ,chinese at ,san ,leandro were attended with so rich a blessing1 is now acting pastor of the ,presbyterian church at ,visalia4 ,he has carried there his zeal for this good work2 has already rented a small room1 and opened a school4 ,we shall aid him as far as we are able4 ,would that we had a hundred men like-minded with him touching this work6 ,miss ,anthony is obliged to relinquish the care of the school at ,petaluma1 and is succeeded by ,miss ,waterbury1 whose ,christian spirit is not unknown at ,no4 #ef ,reade ,st41 ,new ,york4 ,this school is quite small1 but its members surpass those of every other school in liberality1 and ,i cannot consent to abandon them4 ,christ1 too1 is becoming known to them4 ,with increasing interest they study ,god's word4 ,and they sing1 somewhat at random1 it must be confessed1 in the matter of time and of tune1 but with an eagerness and a gusto that betoken a beginning both of the spirit and the understanding in their song4 ,miss ,anthony writes3 8,wah ,yene is a good ,christian as far as he understands4 ,he told me1 one evening1 that he prayed #8every morning1 every dinnertime1 and every night4 ,some people1' he added1 #8not much good2 likee go to church2 make ,mr4 ,hutchins the pastor of the ,congregational church think they good4 ,some people very good1 and pray to ,god4 ,i likee be ,st4 ,augustine4 ,i was raised by kind ,northern friends4 ,i am teaching school on the ,st4 ,john's ,river1 about thirty or forty miles from ,st4 ,augustine4 ,in giving my descriptions1 ,i will first describe my school-house4 ,it is made entirely of logs1 with the exception of the door and windows1 which were given by ,miss ,m4 ,the skies may be seen in any part of the room4 ,the cracks in the floor are large enough to put your hands through4 ,when it rains1 it leaks in like water dropping from the trees4 ,there is no fire-place1 nor was there any way for keeping warm until1 the past week1 a young man got me a little stove4 ,but the house is so open this does but little towards heating it up4 ,we have had some cold days1 and the only way ,i had to keep my scholars warm was1 to build two large fires and have the poor little children set around them 7out of doors74 ,i rubbed their little cold hands and bare feet1 and oh6 how it made my heart ache to see the tears stand in their eyes1 when ,i asked them why they didn't put on shoes and warmer clothes1 and the reply would be1 8,i have on all the clothes ,i got1 and ,i ain't got no shoes40 ,sometimes1 when ,i have on all ,i can to keep warm1 most of my girls have only two garments on1 the boys nothing but pants and shirt4 ,some of my pupils have to come between two and three miles1 and then cross a creek4 ,i have a sewing-school for my girls once a week4 ,i read to them1 and teach them things to sing while they are sewing4 ,they are to keep what they make4 ,i have been teaching three-and-a-half months4 ,the age of my scholars is from three-and-a-half to twenty-four years4 ,i have enrolled thirty scholars1 most of them very good1 all anxious to learn4 ,the people are very1 very poor1 and have real hard times in getting clothing1 and keeping from starving4 ,they live in log huts1 some of which leak1 and are in a dreadful condition4 ,i don't know how to describe some of them4 ,there are a few white settlers
