fully4 ,we might refer them to the monthly report1 but we know that many of them are too busy to keep accounts for us1 their agents4 ,we know too well how the financial pressure of the year has crippled one and another of them4 ,their letters--not empty1 either--have told us1 in confidence1 from time to time1 of their losses1 and we know that their gifts this year have testified to unusual self-denials1 and to deepening convictions of the greatness of their work through us4 ,and the best of it all is1 that these gifts have not diminished from either of the classes from which our work is supported1 the living or the dead4 ,for the ability to make this statement1 and in times like these1 we thank you1 generous friends1 and we thank ,him whose money you are permitted to administer4 ,we take courage1 and congratulate the poor for whom we labor1 and whose hope is in your remembrance of them4 ,in addition to the receipts above mentioned1 we have received1 towards the payment of our debt1 to ,april #ast1 #h1iba4gb1 and also pledges1 for the same purpose1 of #f1iej1 the most of which is conditioned on the payment of the whole debt within the year4 ,these figures encourage us to hope that our friends will go on1 in the same quiet and inexpensive way1 until our whole debt shall be entirely extinguished1 and our hands unloosed for a more earnest grapple with the great task of lifting up the needy and ignorant1 and yet hopeful races1 for which we labor in ,america and in ,africa4 ,brethren1 we may not be thought politic by all1 but we believe in perfect frankness with our donors and the whole public4 ,we have a diminishing debt1 curtailed expenses1 and an increasing revenue4 ,what1 then8 ,shall any one withhold a dollar designed for us on that account8 ,by no means4 ,rather continue to endorse our policy of economy and thrift4 ,you are showing your confidence2 do not withhold it4 ,and the need8 ,the work is pressing on us from all sides4 ,we have to plan continually how to make each dollar do the work of two4 ,the facts given in this number of the ,,missionary1 and those of the past few months1 show some of the wants which crowd upon us continually4 ,a new and commodious building must be erected at ,tougaloo1 ,miss41 to accommodate the overflow of students1 whose beds have crowded into recitation rooms and out-buildings1 and who are now sheltered in temporary barracks of rough boards4 ,a new building is greatly needed at ,atlanta1 to accommodate its enlarged work1 and to meet the just expectations of the ,state ,legislature1 which has granted it #h1jjj a year1 for several years1 for current expenses4 ,the finishing of the church at ,golding's ,grove1 and the enlargement of the school building there1 are absolute necessities4 ,these are but specimens of the claims of this sort pressing upon us4 ,added to these1 is the imperative demand for the extension of our church work in new and promising fields1 stretching down to the farthest limits of ,texas4 ,the enlarged ,african work is making increasing demands upon our treasury4 ,besides all this1 the three coming months will witness the return of our ,southern workers1 when the payment of their last bills and traveling expenses must be met4 ,with such an outlook before us1 we are compelled1 while uttering our gratitude for the liberality of our friends1 to entreat them not to forget the pressing wants near at hand4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,new ,,cartridges4 ,we have prepared with much care1 and have in hand1 a series of pamphlets1 to which we desire to attract the attention of our readers4 ,no4 #a is a brief history of the origin and growth of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,it is contained in sixteen pages2 shows the ,providential opening up of the work on this side and on that1 and serves to answer many questions--e4g41 how we came to have a mission in ,africa--many of our friends1 even1 being ignorant of the fact that this was our first work1 and that we have a permanent fund set apart by its donor for this very purpose4 ,the same is shown to be true1 in part1 as to the work among the ,indians and ,chinamen2 while the demands of the freedmen1 and the opportunities after emancipation1 are their own vindication in the statement of the facts4 ,no4 #b is the ,african pamphlet1 and contains 7#a7 a history of the ,mendi ,mission1 carefully compiled by ,dr4 ,dana1 now of ,minnesota4 ,it is much more full and detailed than that read by him at ,syracuse1 and printed in the ,december ,,missionary4 ,the valuable suggestions at the close of the paper are repeated only in their headings4 7#b7 ,a brief supplement brings the history down to the departure of the second party of colored missionaries1 ,feb4 #bcrd1 #ahgh4 ,large extracts are given 7#c7 from of ,indian ,commissioners is full of condensed information and valuable suggestion4 ,the tabulated results of the peace policy during nine years appeared in the ,,missionary for ,march4 ,in view of these figures1 the ,report says3-- 8,these results in industry1 education1 and ,christianity in the short space of nine years confirm our belief1 often expressed in former reports1 that the peace policy is the only right policy1 and there should be no longer any doubt as to its continuance as the permanent policy of the government4 ,and yet every year the proposal is renewed to recommit the management of ,indian affairs to the ,war ,department1 and abandon the work of civilization so well begun4 ,the grounds upon which the transfer is urged1 namely1 greater economy1 a more honest purchase and distribution of ,indian supplies1 more complete protection of the frontier settlers from ,indian massacres1 and a more effectual prevention of ,indian wars--these are repeated year after year1 in ,congress and in the public press1 and as often patiently answered and fully refuted40 ,as to economy1 a tabular comparison is published1 which shows that 8supplies contracted for and furnished to military posts have cost much more--in some cases thirty-eight to seventy-eight per cent4 more--than at the neighboring ,indian agencies40 ,it is asserted that the quality of goods supplied1 as well as the prices paid1 command the approval of all competent and disinterested judges1 while the vigilance exercised over the transportation and delivery of these supplies has been productive of most satisfactory results in securing for the benefit of the ,indians the appropriations made in their behalf4 ,the ,report refers to the conclusion of the wars with ,sitting ,bull and ,joseph1 and calls attention to the fact that1 though it may have appeared as though the disturbances had been quite general1 in fact only a few hundreds1 even of the ,dakotas and ,nez ,perces1 have been engaged in them4 ,the wars of the last nine years 7of the peace policy7 have been more limited1 and have cost far less than in any other equal period of our history as a nation4 ,during the forty years preceding #ahfh1 the direct cost of the ,indian wars averaged twelve and a half millions a year4 ,even the war with ,joseph demonstrated the effect of civilizing agencies1 in its freedom from the barbarities to women and children1 which have attended such outbreaks in former years4 ,civilization and ultimate absorption into the body politic should be the one purpose steadily pursued4 ,military means cannot accomplish it4 8,civilizing agencies must come from civil life40 ,the testimony is that the influence of military posts in or near ,indian reservations is generally prejudicial to good morals1 good order1 and progress in civilization4 ,to teach ,indian children to read and write1 or ,indian men to sow and reap1 are emphatically civil and not military occupations4 ,the summary of recommendations1 which are not new1 but none the less worthy of consideration on that account1 is as follows3 #ast4 ,government of ,indians by law4 #b;d4 ,division of reservation lands and homestead rights4 #c;d4 ,larger appropriations for the support of schools4 #dth4 ,consolidation of agencies1 and reduction of expense4 #eth4 ,gradation of salaries on an equitable basis4 ,in view of the excellent results1 and the greater promise of the peace policy1 and of the imminent danger of the speedy transfer of the ,bureau of ,indian ,affairs to the ,war ,department1 it behooves every friend of the red man1 who hopes for his ultimate civilization and citizenship1 to bring every legitimate influence to bear upon our legislators to prevent the consummation of this scheme4 ,reader1 do you know the mind of your senator and representative upon this subject8 ,if you do not1 will you not find it out1 and do all that you can to make him a minister of peace1 and not of war1 to these poor people8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,king ,,david ,,and ,,king ,,solomon4 ,the fourth article in ,scribner's1 for ,april1 is entitled 8,king ,david40 ,that regal personage proves to be only ,david ,king--a long1 lank1 awkward1 shy1 near-sighted ,yankee1 who1 up among the ,new ,hampshire hills1 felt an inward call to go ,south and teach the blacks4 ,he was a man not much missed from his old home1 and not warmly welcomed at his new one4 ,he was good1 but not wise nor practical4 ,the blacks came to him1 young and old1 in flocks1 to learn to read1 and he taught them morning1 noon and night4 ,but all the while the white planters 8regarded the schoolmaster as an interloper1 a fanatic1 a knave or a fool1 according to their various degrees of bitterness40 ,he tried the experiment of offering work to the idle blacks1 but with little success4 ,and now a ,northern carpet-bagging politician1 of the baser sort1 came into his vicinity1 and finding him an honest man1 with some influence over the poor freedmen1 set himself to overthrow it by offers of whiskey and promises of power4 ,and poor ,david1 innocent1 and ignorant of human nature1 makes weak and ineffectual fight with him1 as he had before with haughty planters and ignorant negroes1 yields the ground and goes home again1 baffled and discouraged4 ,this charmingly told story has but one fault1 and that1 probably1 is without intention4 ,it may give the impression that ,king ,david is a fair sample of the ,northern teachers in the ,south1 and that his ill-success is the record or the prophecy of their general disaster and defeat4 ,the true lesson of the story1 and that which may have been1 if any1 in the writer's mind1 is only this3 ,that this ,david was no ,solomon4 ,that goodness1 unsupported by wisdom1 is not sufficient capital for educational work4 ,that a man who is a failure at home1 amid favorable surroundings1 will not be likely to succeed abroad1 alone1 with everything against him4 ,that the lame1 the halt and the blind do not make good recruits for the war against ignorance and sin4 ,just to offset this story1 which has doubtless had its counterpart in ,southern as in ,northern schools and villages1 we give the story of one of our teachers in the ,state of ,south ,carolina1 as written to us by himself only a few months ago4 ,its simple1 straight-forward truthfulness will1 we think1 make amends for its lack of the spiciness and crispness of expression1 which give so delicate a literary flavor to the story of ,king ,david3 8,i was born in ,western ,new ,york1 and1 as all my friends continue to reside there1 ,i still call it my home4 ,i have been a member of the ,household of ,faith since #ahei2 ,i have been engaged in teaching the freedmen since the fall of #ahff1 and1 for the greater part of the had talked most against me now came to visit me4 ,i organized the first temperance society for the colored people in this part of the ,state1 and thus got quite a hold on the people4 ,the organization is still continued1 and is doing much good4 ,several of our students1 who are out teaching1 have organized similar societies1 and ,i hear good reports from them4 8,early last fall1 a couple of young men from another county1 asked me if they could not stay in a vacant room in the building and do their own cooking4 ,i1 of course1 gave them permission1 and did what ,i could to assist them in preparing the room4 ,i had some old lumber in the wood-shed1 and from it we made a bedstead and table2 had boxes for chairs and newspapers for window shades4 ,it was soon reported that we had good accommodations for boarders1 and1 before winter had fairly set in1 there were nineteen men living in the room1 which measured #cj x #bb4 ,we had only enough lumber for four bedsteads1 and on these the nineteen men slept for four months4 ,a part of them would retire at #h o'clock1 and sleep till after midnight2 then arise and let the others take their places4 ,they all did their own cooking1 and1 as we had but one cooking vessel1 they were all night doing their cooking for the next day4 ,those who sat up the fore-part of the night spent the time in cooking1 and while they were asleep the others were cooking in the same room4 8,twenty-three of our students are teaching in three counties1 and over #gjj pupils are under their care4 ,one of these closed his school for a week1 and walked sixty miles1 in order to be present at our closing exercises in ,june4 8,we have a weekly prayer-meeting1 which is well attended1 and is very interesting4 ,we also spend an hour and a half each ,sabbath results of the rebellion was more wise1 nor has any trust under the ,government been more conscientiously executed than that of ,gen4 ,howard in its administration4 ,so far as any part of the sum was used to relieve physical suffering1 it was divided impartially2 and1 in the appropriation of the larger part of it to the education of the colored people1 there was the clearest comprehension of their highest wants4 ,the money was appropriated with just reference to the claims of the different religious bodies co-operating with the ,government1 and the educational institutions founded by it will be of the largest ,congregational ,churches in the ,state4 ,in one1 the annual offering to the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association was made that day4 ,but1 before the contribution was taken1 the pastor offered a prayer that both impressed and instructed me4 ,it was a prayer of special consecration of the offerings that were about to be made4 ,he prayed that the people might give thoughtfully and intelligently2 that ,god's blessing might rest upon the gifts1 accompany them to the treasury1 and out upon the mission field of the society4 ,no mere formality was this petition1 but a glowing1 heartfelt prayer for the object in view4 ,i am quite prepared to hear that many other pastors are equally thoughtful to publicly consecrate the benevolent contributions of their congregations1 although my observation leads me to believe that such fidelity is exceptional4 ,but why should it not be the rule8 ,indeed1 when one comes to think of it1 the wonder is that it is not4 ,so large and important are the interests involved--interests connected with the extension of ,christ's kingdom2 so sacred are many of the gifts--the devising of generous hearts and the fruits of self-denial--surely very tender should be the spirit of the occasion when the offering is made4 ,yet not only on account of this should consecrating prayer be offered when church contributions are taken1 but also on account of the money that is thoughtlessly1 and often unwillingly1 thrown into the contribution box4 ,it would be an interesting revelation to have placed before us just what proportion of the so-called benevolent contributions is consciously given as an offering to the ,lord4 ,i fear it would be startlingly small4 ,now1 all this money that is thrown into the ,lord's treasury1 by givers who have no higher prompting than that which governs them when they toss a nickel to an organ-grinder on the street1 needs to be consecrated4 ,it is rather sarcastic to couple the word 8benevolent0 with such contributions2 they sadly need prayer before they go out on their mission of benevolence4 ,consecrating prayer would tend to correct this great evil by inspiring thoughtfulness4 8,how much owest thou thy ,lord80 would have a recognized place in deciding the amount to be given4 ,the ,lord is a party in the transaction4 ,in the persons of the poor and the perishing1 ,he stands over against the treasury1 and rightfully asks for evidence of loyalty to ,his cause4 ,are crumbs that fall from an over-supplied table1 are drops that trickle from an overflowing cup1 a sufficient evidence8 ,christ knows the heart4 ,think of what it is to bring to ,him the mere waste of our plenty1 and call that charity4 ,there is a possibility of actual sin here1 whose guilt is but increased by explanation4 ,it was given thoughtlessly--no reference to the debt owed1 no reference given to the needs of the cause to be aided--thoughtlessly6 ,that is precisely where the ,christian conscience should sting most keenly4 ,for thoughtlessness in what is paid to ,christ1 is a most aggravated form of sin4 ,grocery bills1 clothing bills1 rent and taxes shall be paid with thoughtful reference to what is justly due1 and the world shall label him dishonest who tries even to quibble about the point2 but upon this transcendently higher plane of obligation1 involving the question of what the soul owes its ,god and ,saviour1 many ,christian men will do what1 on the lower plane1 they would scorn as highly dishonorable4 ,prayerful thoughtfulness will work reform in this respect1 and develop a more genuinely benevolent ,christian character4 ,the money1 too1 that comes from unwilling hands needs consecration4 ,many of the dimes and quarters that keep the deacons so long after the service laboriously counting1 had they voices and permission to speak1 would tell a story complimentary neither to the generosity nor benevolence of their donors4 ,they would say3 8,we are here chiefly because the contribution box was passed1 and our donors did not like to appear niggardly4 ,the hand that dropped us was so held that the man passing the box could not see us had he wished to1 but we made quite a noise as we clinked down into our places1 and by our clatter produced an impression that there was a good deal more to us than there is40 ,the hypocrisy entering into this portion of the contribution needs casting out by prayer4 ,another good would be secured by the offering of a consecrating prayer when benevolent offerings are made in the churches4 ,the contribution box would be held in worthy esteem as a genuine means of grace4 ,by many it is so held2 it should be by all4 ,it is no intruder in the sanctuary2 it has the sanction of ,divine appointment1 and is the necessary outgrowth of 8pure religion and undefiled0 in the heart4 ,its visits to the pews should be hailed with delight1 for it brings even a greater blessing to the giver than it carries away to the receiver4 ,still1 it is not thus welcomed by every one4 ,indeed1 such an aversion have some people to it that an announcement a week beforehand that it is to be used1 is to make certain that ,sunday will find them sick4 ,the nature of the contribution-box sickness need not be particularly inquired into1 but 8indisposition0 is a good-sounding word with which to designate it1 and it is so elastic in meaning withal1 that it can be made to stretch over into the domain of conscience4 ,yet a very serious sickness it is1 and should be so regarded4 ,next to willingness and ability1 is opportunity to do good4 ,to turn away from the opportunity is to confess unwillingness2 and such confession1 the ,apostle ,james unqualifiedly affirms1 is denial of having love to ,god4 ,indisposition1 therefore1 means1 on apostolic authority1 that the love of ,god dwells not in the heart4 ,i desire to commend the example of the ,ohio pastor to all pastors who desire to increase the ,twenty-three years ago1 in one of the northern counties of ,mississippi1 there was born a little slave boy4 ,no white blood coursed in his veins4 ,no one cared for his birth save1 perhaps1 his weary slave mother4 ,some one called him ,albert1 and that was all1 for slave children had only one name4 ,no future opened before him1 for slave children had no future1 but service to a master4 ,he grew up to a life of poverty and toil and neglect1 and early learned what it was to be cold and hungry and sorrowful4 ,by and by began the fierce struggle between slavery and freedom4 ,the slaves were sent from place to place1 to prevent their escape to the ,union army4 ,albert wandered about with them--to ,tennessee1 to ,texas1 to ,georgia--till the close of the war found him back in ,tennessee1 and near the city of ,nashville4 ,here he picked up his letters1 and1 at the age of fourteen1 learned to read4 ,in #ahfi1 he went to a school taught by one of the first student teachers from ,fisk ,university1 who encouraged him to look to something higher than the spelling-book and reader4 ,in #ahgj he entered that institution4 ,then began the long1 hard struggle for an education4 ,for two years he groomed horses and did housework4 ,for two years more he took care of a drunken young man1 the son of wealthy parents in ,nashville2 and often might ,albert have been seen with his ,greek or ,latin book1 far into the night1 sitting in some saloon or grocery1 waiting for the young man1 whose aged mother had made him promise that he would never leave her son in a saloon at night4 ,poor1 awkward1 and dressed out of missionary barrels1 often the recipient of student aid1 sometimes well-nigh disheartened1 but always pressing on2 once bought off by ,mr4 ,spence for the sum of ten dollars1 when his father wanted him to work in the field1 he toiled slowly on1 step by step1 winning honor and respect1 and loved by his teachers as1 perhaps1 few students of ,fisk ,university were ever loved4 ,always good in scholarship1 always among the first of his class1 in nine years he passed from the alphabet to within three mouths of a college diploma4 ,he was converted in #ahgb1 and at once gave himself to the ministry4 ,in common with most students of ,fisk ,university1 he had thought1 though not very definitely1 of missionary work in ,africa4 ,on the #ast day of ,february1 there came a call for two men for the ,mendi ,mission4 ,albert had his plans4 ,he hoped to graduate from college1 a thing few colored youths have attained4 ,he had two orphan brothers and a little sister1 to whom he purposed to give an education and ,christian training4 ,perhaps he had also his ambitions in the ministry1 where educated colored men will soon rise so high2 but he laid them all aside when ,god called1 and with a fellow-student1 whose soul was mightily stirred by that call1 he said1 8,here am ,i1 ,lord1 send me40 ,he said1 8,how ,i should feel1 to have ,god call1 and ,i not be ready60 ,his last request to the students of ,fisk ,university was that they would make this its motto3 8,her sons and her daughters are ever on the altar40 ,to-day ,albert ,miller is on the shores of
