formal presentation of ,mr4 ,carpenter's picture 8,signing the ,emancipation ,proclamation10 to the ,united ,states1 was the speech of the ,hon4 ,alexander ,h4 ,stephens4 ,it was a graceful and significant act1 when the former ,vice-,president of the ,southern ,confederacy spoke such words of hearty good-will at the reception of this commemoration of its death-blow4 ,mr4 ,stephens claims for the ,south a share of the honor of emancipating the slaves1 since 8the freedom of that race was never finally consummated1 and could not be1 until the ,southern ,states sanctioned the ,thirteenth ,amendment4 ,they accepted the proposition for emancipation by a voluntary uncontrolled0 adoption of it4 ,of the institution of slavery1 as previously existing1 he said3 8,if it were not the best relation for the happiness and welfare of both races--morally1 physically1 intellectually and politically--it was wrong and ought to have been abolished4 ,this ,i said of it years before secession1 and ,i repeat it still4 ,but1 as ,i have said1 this is no time now to discuss those questions4 8,i have seen something of the world1 and traveled somewhat1 and ,i have never yet found on earth a paradise4 ,the ,southern ,states are no exception4 ,wherever ,i have been1 ,i have been ready to exclaim with ,burns3 8#8,but1 oh6 what crowds in every land ,are wretched and forlorn6 99 99 99 99 99 ,man's inhumanity to man ,makes countless thousands mourn4' 8,it was so at the ,south4 ,it was so at the ,north4 ,it is so yet4 ,it is so in every part of the world that ,i have seen40 ,in regard to the future relation of the races in this land1 ,mr4 ,stephens speaks cautiously1 and not unwisely4 ,with many of the best men of the ,south1 he sees here a problem not easily to be solved1 and an outcome not lightly to be prophesied4 ,he denies that any ,southern men desire a change back to the old relation of master and slave4 ,we quote again3 8,the question of the proper relation of the races is one of the most difficult problems which statesmen or philanthropists1 legislators or jurists1 ever had to solve4 ,the former polity of the ,southern ,states upon this subject is ended1 and ,i do not think it inappropriate on this occasion to indulge in some remarks with regard to the future4 ,since the emancipation1 since the former ruling race have been relieved of their direct heavy responsibility for the protection and welfare of their dependents1 it has been common to speak of the colored race as #8the wards of the nation4' 8,may ,i not say with appropriateness1 in this connection1 and due reverence1 in the language of ,georgia's greatest intellect 7,toombs71 #8,they are rather the wards of the ,almighty1' committed now1 under a new state of things1 to the rulers1 the law-makers1 the law-expounders and the law-executors throughout this broad land1 within their respective constitutional spheres1 to take care of1 and provide for1 in that complicated system of government under which we live8 ,i am inclined1 sir1 so to regard them1 and so to speak of them--not in exceptional cases1 but as a mass4 ,in the providence of ,god1 why their ancestors were permitted to be brought over here1 it is not for us to say2 but they have a location and habitation here1 especially in the ,south1 and since the changed condition of their status1 though it was the leading cause of the late terrible conflict of arms between the ,states1 yet ,i think ,i may venture to affirm there is not one within the circle of my acquaintance1 or in the whole ,southern country1 who would now wish to see the old relation restored40 ,recognizing a national responsibility for the welfare and protection of these freedmen1 he closes with this ringing exhortation3 8,this changed status creates new duties4 ,the wardship has changed hands4 ,men of the ,north and of the ,south1 of the ,east and of the ,west--,i care not of what party--,i would to-day1 on this commemorative occasion1 urge upon every one within the sphere of duty and humanity1 whether in public or private life1 to see to it that there be no violation of the ,divine trust40 ,to which the ,independent gives its enthusiastic assent as follows3 8,amen and ,amen6 ,statesmen1 patriots1 ,christians1 listen to the words of the ,vice-,president of the ,confederate ,government6 ,they speak the deepest feelings of the best men who fought against the ,union4 ,there remains now for us the greater task of making the freedmen worthy to enjoy and fit to adorn that freedom whose proclamation was signed ,september #bb;d1 #ahfb40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,douglass ,,and ,,hayes ,,at ,,howard ,,university4 ,surely1 the colored people of the ,south are receiving plain talk and good advice on all sides4 ,perhaps no one speaks more plainly and penetratingly1 and perhaps no one has a better right or ability to do it1 than the ,hon4 ,frederick ,douglass4 ,at the reception of an engraving of ,mr4 ,carpenter's picture1 from the artist1 by the ,howard ,university1 he uttered honest words1 and true4 ,speaking of ,mr4 ,stephens' speech1 in which he said it was yet to be proven if emancipation was a blessing1 ,mr4 ,douglass replied that this question was to be answered in the future1 and meant that his race was still on trial--on trial to see if they would be better masters to themselves than their masters were to them--if they would rise as early and work as late4 ,in regard to his own people1 he said3 8,among the faults of my people are self-indulgence1 love of ease1 and improvidence4 ,they must learn to spend their earnings judiciously4 ,if one can't get up1 he will be helped down4 ,they have a fair chance to get up4 ,they are on the way to ,congress1 and if the negro can stand ,congress1 ,congress ought to stand the negro4 ,the colored men have been forced up by abnormal conditions1 but they are now coming up gradually by their own exertions40 ,this is the soundest kind of sense4 ,emancipation only struck the shackles from the slave2 it had no power to lift him up4 ,federal force could hold him up by the arms1 but he is still as limp as ever1 for all that2 his ankle bones could not immediately receive strength from it4 8,they have a fair chance to get up02 but that does not get them up of itself4 ,the stairways of education are laid from the first story--yes1 from the sub-cellar up through the basement1 flight after flight1 to the top floor4 ,but stairways do not turn1 end for end1 to tumble people up4 ,the paths of honest industry and thrift are open2 but they are all up-hill1 and never slide their travelers down into competence and respectability4 ,there is a chance to get up1 but the freedman must do his own climbing1 after all4 ,if there are some to dissuade him1 by assuring him that for him these ascents lead up to nothing worth the effort1 there are others to cheer him on1 and to rejoice with him in each new advance4 ,but even such will be compelled to admit the justice of the saying1 8,if one can't get up1 he will be helped down02 he must not obstruct the way4 ,he ought1 however1 to be encouraged1 by seeing such men as ,douglass up so near the top4 ,and those who cannot encourage him by example1 because they were born on higher levels1 surely may sympathize with him1 in the remembrance of their own toil1 as they ascended on the same scale1 though higher4 ,let there not fail him1 while he fails not to strive1 cheers from above1 cheers from below1 cheers from all around him1 and a hand1 too1 now and then1 for him to grasp and get a friendly pull4 ,the stair builders must be in the way to help a little1 just when heart and strength are failing4 ,president ,hayes spoke1 too1 on the same occasion1 and in much the same line4 ,read this ,president's ,message3 8,the wisdom1 the righteousness1 and the grandeur of ,abraham ,lincoln's act of emancipation1 no man will deny4 ,that it has conferred infinite blessings on our country1 on both races1 and on the world1 very few will question4 ,this estimate of the act1 and of its results1 will not be changed by the good conduct or the bad conduct of either race4 ,but it is said that the question of the blessing conferred on the colored race depends on their conduct4 ,what they most need is1 what ,burns calls #8the glorious privilege of being independent4' ,what this requires is1 the willingness to labor1 and the prudence and self-denial to save the fruits of labor4 ,my young colored friends1 let this1 then1 be among your good resolutions3 ,i will work1 and ,i will save1 to the end that ,i may become independent40 ,that is good advice for any poor man1 black or white4 ,this picture of the signing of the ,emancipation ,act can commemorate all of which it is capable1 only if the privilege of freedom be embraced as the opportunity of manly toil1 and the occasion of all patient effort to become the equal of other men1 not in external advantages and rights half so much as in capacity and character4 ,this is what we are working for among our colored brethren1 and especially among the youth1 and with a measure of success which makes us full of hope for their future and ours4 ,we must be patient to hold out the chances1 and keep open the opportunities1 as well as they to toil and strive to use them4 ,most of all do we feel that when we have succeeded in leading them to an intelligent ,christian experience1 we have awakened in them the highest motive of which the human mind is capable1 and brought them under the most powerful stimulus to the worthiest of all ambitions--to fit themselves1 not for high stations1 but for useful work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,church ,,work ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,is the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 devoting a proper share of its work to the extension of ,congregational ,churches in the ,south8 ,the question is a fair one1 and deserves a frank answer4 ,but the answer1 to be just to all interests concerned1 must take a broad view of the whole subject4 ,the paramount duty of the nation1 and especially of the churches1 to the emancipated slaves1 is to fit them for their new position as citizens1 and their true destiny as men and ,christians in ,america1 and as missionaries to ,africa4 ,anything short of this is less than our whole duty4 ,the blacks are all religious in their way1 and nearly all are connected with churches4 ,in the matter of outward profession and inward emotion1 the quantity is all that could be asked4 ,it is in the quality alone that a change is needed4 ,no ,christian ,church can discharge its duty to them by merely denominationalizing them into its ranks1 leaving the essentials of character and ,christian manhood unchanged4 ,the ,congregational ,churches of this country certainly will not be satisfied with this low aim4 ,but these ,congregational ,churches are1 by the nature of the case1 compelled to work in methods differing from those of other denominations4 ,methodists1 ,baptists1 and1 to some extent1 ,presbyterians and ,episcopalians1 pre-occupy the ground4 ,congregationalists were almost unknown among the blacks before the war1 and their efforts must naturally meet with sectarian prejudice1 somewhat in proportion to the ignorance of the people4 ,but1 nevertheless1 ,congregationalism has a great responsibility in regard to this people1 in laying foundations on which to build the essentials of character in civil and ,christian life4 ,it is with this aim that the ,association has1 from the beginning1 sought to do its work--moving1 with the progress of the colored people1 from the common-school to the more effective normal1 collegiate and theological teaching4 ,the wisdom of its efforts is attested by the commendations of those1 both in the ,south and ,north1 who are most competent to judge1 and also by the more convincing fact1 that it can point to #ajj1jjj scholars in schools taught by its former pupils1 to the education it has given to many colored ministers1 and to the missionaries1 born in slavery1 trained in its schools1 and now sent to ,africa4 ,the church work must for a time1 at least1 grow out of1 and keep pace with1 this ,christian teaching1 which prepares the people to appreciate1 and the minister to preach1 a pure ,gospel and a practical morality4 ,it were easy to scatter the seeds in a thin and shallow soil1 and gather a harvest that would wither while it was gathering4 ,a writer in one of the religious papers1 who censures the ,association1 makes this great boast1 followed by a frank confession3 8,with half of three millions of dollars ,i can ,congregationalize every negro in the ,south2 but1 of course1 the work would not be permanent40 ,the italics in this quotation are ours1 for we wish to call attention to the acknowledgment1 and to say that this transient work is precisely what the ,association does not attempt4 ,it will not take the money of its patrons to start ephemeral growths4 ,it prefers1 and we are sure its intelligent friends will prefer1 that it should plow deep1 harrow thoroughly1 and sow 8wholly a right seed10 that the gatherings may be an hundred fold for the garner of the ,master4 ,an effort is made to stir up ,congregationalists to plant white churches in the ,south4 ,the project is not new1 but its results thus far have not been encouraging4 ,soon after the war1 the ,home ,missionary ,society and the ,congregational ,union invested large moneys in establishing such churches there1 and we suppose that their experience will lead them to ask for very clear evidence of more favorable auspices before they will wish to renew the attempt4 ,but if it were renewed1 it would only be an exaggeration of the difficulties at the ,west1 where feeble rival churches1 in poor and small communities1 struggle against inevitable death4 ,for1 in the ,south1 we should have two feeble ,congregational churches1 the one white and the other black1 in still poorer and smaller places4 ,and more than all that1 the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 has started its church work on the only true ,gospel basis1 founding churches without distinction of color4 ,its churches are not black by its ordination1 and are only made nearly so by the caste prejudice of the whites4 ,it ought to be understood that the progress of any people in civilization and ,christianity is a growth1 taking form and bearing fruit according to soil and climate1 and that it cannot be produced to order1 or at the behest of mere theorists4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,four ,,new ,,missionaries ,,for ,,africa4 ,many an experiment has failed because entered upon half-heartedly1 and tried on too small a scale to succeed4 ,the height of wisdom is to find the true line on which caution and courage meet4 ,it has been the purpose of the ,association to do its part in the evangelization of ,africa1 by missionaries of ,african descent1 and to begin in that effort so soon as our schools should begin to furnish those qualified for such important work4 ,last fall1 when1 after the return of ,mr4 ,billheimer and the death of ,barnabas ,root1 the ,mendi ,mission needed rinforcement1 the new policy was begun by sending ,messrs4 ,snelson1 ,james and ,white to the field4 ,they arrived in due time1 and entered at once heartily upon their work4 ,they have had some slight illnesses--almost1 if not quite all of them having suffered somewhat in the process of acclimation--but at last accounts all were well again4 ,if we are fully informed1 they have endured less inconvenience from this cause than we anticipated4 ,but the mission was still weak--,bro4 ,snelson the only minister4 ,two of the white missionary helpers1 who had been in the field before1 soon withdrew in impaired health4 ,it was deemed wise1 and1 indeed1 indispensable1 for the successful prosecution of the work1 that the ranks should be at once filled4 ,it was decided to send three single men1 or better1 if possible1 two married men with their wives4 ,a letter was written to ,fisk ,university1 stating the need1 which was read without comment1 at prayers1 ,feb4 #hth4 ,god's ,spirit took the message to the heart of ,andrew ,e4 ,jackson1 and sent it by him to ,albert ,miller1 and through them to ,ella ,m4 ,hildridge and ,ada ,j4 ,roberts 7also students at ,fisk71 to whom they were respectively engaged1 and three days later the four offered themselves willingly for this far-off field4 ,the faculty recognized at once their fitness for the work2 they were among the best and brightest and most advanced of the students in their respective departments4 ,the four met daily for prayer together1 and their convictions and purposes were daily strengthened4 ,the ,executive ,committee accepted them promptly1 and felt it necessary to press their speedy departure1 that they might reach the west coast of ,africa before the wet season should set in1 when the conditions for their acclimature would be less favorable than earlier4 ,on ,saturday of that week a council was convened1 which1 on the following day1 ,sunday1 ,feb4 #agth1 ordained the two young men to the ,gospel ministry1 they having each had considerable experience in preaching4 ,a farewell meeting of the students was also held on the same day1 full of heartiness and fervor1 at which the following resolution was unanimously adopted3 8,in consideration of the call of ,god to our brethren1 to labor in ,africa1 and in consideration of the many hours spent together in ,christian communion1 8,resolved1 ,that we devote a portion of each ,sabbath morning to prayer especially for them in their labors on the ,african shores1 that they may be abundantly blessed1 both spiritually and physically1 and enabled to do good work for the ,master40 ,we have no fear of a lack of missionary zeal henceforth in ,fisk ,university4 ,but the manifestation of interest in this event was not confined within its walls4 ,all ,nashville seemed aglow with friendly enthusiasm4 ,dr4 ,rand1 of the ,first ,cumberland ,presbyterian ,church1 invited ,miller into his pulpit1 at the close of the ,sunday morning service1 to address the congregation1 which took up a liberal collection for the outfit of the young missionaries4 ,their ages range from twenty-one to twenty-seven4 ,the ,theological students of ,vanderbilt ,university invited them to an interview on ,sunday afternoon1 at which they were most kindly received2 and after prayers together1 and conversation1 were the recipients of presents of books and money4 ,the next day1 the double marriage was solemnized by ,professors ,bennett and ,spence1 and later1 a general farewell meeting was held in ,st4 ,john's ,chapel4 ,the large building was crowded1 and many went away unable to find entrance4 ,prominent ministers from the city and vicinity1 representing the leading denominations of ,christian churches1 were present4 ,the tone of the meeting was congratulatory and hopeful1 as befitted the sending forth of these soldiers of the ,cross4 ,at their leaving ,nashville by the evening train1 an immense crowd gathered in and about the depot to see them off4 ,a day or two only was spent in ,new ,york1 to make necessary purchases1 and receive instructions from the ,secretary4 ,on ,thursday afternoon1 a few members of the ,executive ,committee1 and representatives of the religious press1 held an informal interview with them4 ,they each told the story of their lives1 of their struggles to acquire an education1 and of their religious experiences4 ,all were deeply impressed with the sincerity of their devotion1 and with their modesty and good sense as well4 ,on ,saturday1 the #bc;d of ,february1 they sailed for ,england1 where they arrived ,march #c;d4 ,by the #bjth they were expected to reach ,freetown1 and a few days later1 their new home4 ,we have thus fairly launched on the new experiment of ,african evangelization by men and women of ,african descent1 who have come through ,american slavery to freedom4 ,the nine adults together in the field are enough to support each other's courage and hold up each other's hands4 ,but the field is far away2 the perils of it are peculiar2 the path is a new one to these young men and women4 ,we trust in them with great confidence4 ,but in the complications and unforeseen emergencies which always may arise in a foreign field1 we feel that they need1 more than most missionaries even1 the constant remembrances1 in prayer1 of the thousands of the friends of ,africa in our land and in ,great ,britain4 ,we repeat most urgently their parting request--8,brethren1 pray for us40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,two ,,indian ,,policies4 ,two radically different views have prevailed in this country from the outset in regard to the treatment of the ,indians--the one represented by the word civilization1 and the other by the word extermination4 ,the first of these was entertained by the ,pilgrim ,fathers1 and by the founder of ,pennsylvania1 and was carried out apostolically by ,john ,eliot1 ,david ,brainard1 and others1 as well as by successful ,indian missions of later date4 ,but the effort has been constantly obstructed by the hostilities between the ,indians and the white men1 rendering the latter indisposed to send the ,gospel1 and the former to receive it4 ,the only decided and comprehensive effort by the general ,government1 for the civilization of the ,indians1 is the peace policy inaugurated by ,general ,grant1 the results of which1 in spite of all obstacles and opposition1 have been unmistakably and increasingly advantageous4 7#a7 ,as a class1 the agents selected by the religious societies have been far more trustworthy and efficient than their predecessors1 being themselves honest in their dealings with the ,indian1 and defending them from the frauds of ring speculators1 and the temptations of the liquor dealers4 7#b7 ,the progress of the ,indians in their industrial1 educational and moral advancement has been very marked1 as is shown by a tabulated and comparative statement of facts1 prepared by the ,board of ,indian ,commissioners1 and recently published4 7#c7 ,the agents--representing all denominations1 and1 therefore1 not committing the government to sectarianism--have most directly and heartily co-operated with the religious efforts of the different churches for the evangelization of the ,indians4 ,as the only possibility of civilizing the ,indians lies in their ,christian enlightenment1 the work of the religious societies1 under the fostering care of the government1 gives the highest promise of success4 ,on the other hand1 the policy of extermination has been tried from the beginning4 ,in the earlier days the struggle resembled the border wars between ,england and ,scotland1 being mere temporary raids1 carried on with little expense4 ,but modern warfare puts another aspect on this contest with the ,indians1 making it vastly more costly in men and money4 ,it is believed that not a single ,indian has been killed by our army1 at less than an average expense of a million of dollars1 and of the lives of one or more white men4 ,the ,war ,department and the army are the natural representatives of this policy1 and if the ,indians are transferred to their care1 the peace policy will be overthrown1 and we fear that of extermination substituted in its place4 ,this apprehension involves no reflection on the humanity of the officers and soldiers of the army1 but the inference is justified by the history of the past1 and by the fact that the business of an army is to destroy1 and not to give instruction4 ,much significancy is added to this question by the recent tables of ,major ,clark1 showing that the ,indians are not decreasing in number4 ,they are here1 and mean to stay4 ,we cannot exterminate them1 and we ought1 as a ,christian people1 to face manfully the other and grander alternative of making them good citizens and sharers in the blessings of the ,gospel4 ,one other thing should not be forgotten4 ,this nation long oppressed the black man1 and the dread penalty came at length1 whose mementoes are in a million of soldiers' graves1 in broken homes and hearts1 ,north and ,south1 and in the disturbance of all commercial and industrial interests1 under which the whole land still trembles4 ,if we persevere in our wrongs and neglects of the red man1 have we any hope that we shall escape throughout the ,state4 ,in seven years1 according to their reports to the principal1 these students have taught about five hundred day-schools1 with fifteen thousand scholars4 ,at the same time they their people in this and other ,states4 ,there are in the department seventy pupils4 ,next year a large number will be admitted from the intermediate grade1 which now numbers one hundred1 though1 in our present poverty1 it has had but one teacher the greater part of the year4 ,there are in attendance this year two hundred and fifty students1 a much larger number than ever before1 and there is great efforts to improve in knowledge4 ,it requires no little resolution1 after working hard all day1 to walk a mile or two and study two or three hours4 ,a stranger came a few weeks ago1 wishing1 as he said1 8to cultivate his brain40 ,there was evidently need of it1 and we were glad to learn that his recent conversion had awakened him to the importance of knowing how to read for himself4 ,he also expressed a wish to come here to church1 as he had become acquainted with one of our members1 who1 as he said1 8seemed to be a good1 civil sort of ,christian10 and he thought he would come and see what kind of meetings produced that effect4 ,he had attended another church1 but said he 8didn't like there1 for they had some crossness1 and good ,christians is peaceable2 they can't help being ,,rev4 ,,charles ,,noble1 ,,montgomery ,at the annual meeting of the church1 in ,december1 it was found that of the #ajj pledged to the pastor's salary1 only #be had been paid2 and that an old debt for sexton's services remained1 amounting to #cd4 ,in the extra effort made to pay for the painting and repair of the church1 and other expenses in spring and summer1 these things had been neglected4 ,it was a surprise1 and1 of course1 a disagreeable one to many of the church2 but there was a decided feeling that the amount ought to be raised at once1 and not left to be a burden on the church any longer4 ,a debt of #aji is as much to this people as some of the #ej1jjj debts1 which ,mr4 ,kimball has been helping churches ,north to clear away1 are to them4 ,therefore1 it seemed to me that the matter was one to be carefully and prayerfully managed4 ,i appointed a meeting for the consideration of the matter1 and opened it by reading ,chaps1 viii4 and ix4 of #b;d ,cor41 and briefly explaining their teachings4 ,then we spent half an hour in prayer1 the brethren bringing the burden right to the ,lord in the simplest and most touching language1 expressing their sorrow and self-reproach at having failed to make good their promises1 and asking forgiveness and help4 ,then they talked the matter over1 and decided to raise the amount at once by subscription4 ,a fair was suggested1 but the decision was against it1 on the ground that it wasn't quite honorable to call in outside help to make good their own delinquency2 and1 moreover1 that a fair involved a great deal of unprofitable labor and excitement1 and was a fruitful mother of dissensions4 ,these points they made themselves1 and in view of them they decided to raise the amount by voluntary offerings4 ,the subscription began at once1 and the matter being presented to the church for two successive ,sundays1 the whole amount was raised by voluntary pledges4 ,i am certain that the brethren who so cheerfully and promptly pledged1 and paid1 #g4ej and #f and #e1 gave as abundantly1 in proportion to their means1 as those who pledged #e1jjj and #b1jjj at ,providence4 ,the spirit in which it was done was the most beautiful part of it4 ,it was more than willingly done4 ,the gifts were brought forward thankfully1 joyously1 and ,i never saw happier people in my life than those who joined in thanksgiving to ,god1 when the whole amount was raised4 ,we observed the week of prayer1 with meetings every evening1 and there was real evidence of the presence of the ,spirit4 ,one who has long been in the dark was brought out into the light2 and it seemed to us that we must go forward4 ,we had meetings for two weeks with good attendance1 and very tender feeling4 ,quite a number of people rose for prayers1 and we hope that ,fifty-three responded in the limited half hour4 ,the fruit to be gathered in was from among the older students of the school1 who were not already professing ,christians4 ,this was what would be expected by those who know their faithful1 ,christian teachers4 ,all teachers know the thrilling interest that clusters around the conversion of young persons under their tuition4 ,so1 as ,i have heard our teachers talk of this scholarly young man1 and that promising young woman1 coming over to the ,lord's side1 ,i knew very well what a burden of prayer and effort was lifted from their hearts and hands4 ,the third week of our meetings a younger class seemed interested4 ,one evening a widow begged us to pray for her daughter1 in tones that would have melted a heart of stone4 ,as she passed out of the door1 at the close of the meeting1 ,i overheard her saying to one and another1 8,pray for my child6 pray for my child60 ,an earnest mother1 ,i thought2 who can doubt the reality of her ,orleans4 ,the next evening the mother1 with the same pleading earnestness1 begged us to pray for her child4 ,since her husband's death her property had gone1 other dear ones had passed on1 and it seemed as though she could not be denied the conversion of her child4 ,the grandmother was present1 too1 and gave us a soul-stirring testimony of her long pilgrimage4 ,when those who wished our prayers were requested to come forward1 several responded4 ,all were strangers to me2 but when a certain little girl went forward just behind the others1 a tide of emotion almost overcame me4 ,she was as much a stranger to me as the others1 and ,i1 for a moment1 wondered at my tears4 ,then it flashed upon me that she must be the widow's child1 and my emotion was caused by the flood of sympathy that was involuntarily surging from heart to heart for that praying mother4 ,on inquiry1 ,i found ,i was not mistaken4 ,you can imagine1 better than ,i can describe1 the scene1 when mother and grandmother beautiful girl who had been forward for prayers1 and whose face wore a genuine look of deep contrition4 ,on asking her if she attended church here regularly1 she replied1 8,no2 ,i go to the ,catholic among the occasional guests1 that some of them proposed that the circle be enlarged to include all the colored teachers of the city4 ,the proposal was favorably received1 and the new literary society you have left your friends and home to come and work for the poor colored people40 ,it is astonishing how little these people know about the ,bible1 although they have attended church for years4 attention to the word of ,god when we do have a chance to hear it02 and it is quite affecting to have them thank the kind heavenly ,father for sending some one to teach them ways they knew not of1 and to social worship1 and the rest to friendly calls among the brethren of different missions1 and the reception of calls from ,american friends1 or else to the transaction of the annual business of their ,association4 ,the carefulness with which they attend to this business1 might well be emulated by many a strong church4 ,the amounts involved are small1 of course1 while the talk might seem superabundant to taciturn people like us2 but the exactitude in accounts1 the watchfulness against debts1 the punctuality in their mutual settlements1 if grafted into the working of many a church that ,i have known1 would greatly help its peace and growth1 and even its good name4 ,the 8era of good feeling0 towards the ,chinese1 is1 doubtless1 nearer now than it was eight months ago4 ,i affirm this by faith1 and not because ,i can see1 as yet1 even the first streaks of its dawning4 ,it seems as though the out-cries1 8,down with the ,chinese60 8,the ,chinamen must go1 peaceably if they will1 forcibly if they must10 would have become1 by this time1 monotonous and wearisome1 but every ,monday's morning paper reports a gathering of from #c1jjj to #f1jjj people standing on a sand-lot near our new ,city ,hall1 in the midst often of wind and rain1 and listening for an hour or two1 while ,kearney and ,willock repeat their barbarous refrain4 ,we cannot prevent a depressing effect of this upon our work4 ,christians get afraid of it4 ,one of our pastors1 entering upon temporary service with an inland church1 wrote me as follows a few days since3 8,on my first ,sabbath here1 a poor ,chinaman came to church to hear me4 ,the next day ,i found him out1 and he is a ,christian4 ,he is hungering and thirsting for the word of life1 and ,i thought--what a splendid nucleus that would be for a class4 ,i sought the officers of the church for their consent and approval to such an organization4 ,then came swiftly the ominous shake of the head1 which ,i now so well know1 and ,i was told that #8public sentiment would not bear it4' ,my heart aches for them1 and ,i pray fervently to know my duty40 ,i am utterly at a loss to know how such church officers read the ,great ,commission4 ,i understand what the plain ,english of it is3 ,i think ,i could study it out in the ,greek4 ,does anybody know of any rendering of it1 according to which the ,chinese are left out8 ,it not1 how is it that we have so many of these head-shaking ,christians all over ,california8 ,furthermore1 prejudice breeds prejudice1 and the heathen ,chinese are beginning even to hate the language thus abused to curse and slander them4 ,they have no longer any appetite for the bait with which we have been fishing for their souls4 ,but if our schools are thus unavoidably less attractive to them1 and some of the seats get empty1 we try to do the better work with such as remain4 ,and the gracious ,spirit adds ,his blessing still4 ,five were received to the ,first ,congregational ,church in ,oakland at its last communion4 ,this week two from the ,barnes school have been reported to me as persuaded to be ,christians1 and desirous of joining the ,association4 ,what ,i have several times before said is still true1 ,i think--that no month passes in which ,i do not hear from some one or more of our schools1 of souls coming out of darkness into light4 ,the consequence is that hearty ,christians once fairly engaged in this work become enthusiastic in it4 ,one teacher writes3 8,to try to prepare the way for the enlightenment of these darkened minds has been the highest privilege of my life4 ,i do not forget the blessedness of leading my own children and other young people to ,jesus1 but in the offices of mother and teacher1 this work has come to me as a matter of course1 while the other is the realization of one of my earliest and most fondly cherished desires4 ,i have found it pleasant1 even when ,i could get no word or sign that the faintest shadow of my meaning was comprehended1 for ,i felt that ,i might be starting thought and opening the way for truth to come in by and by2 but when1 in some instances1 there has been a sudden interest manifested1 and such half-incredulous1 half-delighted responses come as #8,what6 ,jesus died for me8' #8,what6 ,jesus ,christ my best friend6' #8,yes1 ,i will love ,him6' ,i have felt one such moment a complete compensation for a whole best4 ,it seems to me very hard to understood the ,bible4 ,i wish ,i had more leisure for my study1 or to follow you while ,i shall learn a great deal4 ,i was very much troubled when ,i stayed on board ship2 she had four ,chinese besides me4 ,there was nobody instructed in anything like the gospel4 ,they thought it was dreadful to believe in ,christ4 ,it makes them swear1 grumble1 and smoke opium4 ,they are walking in the way of destruction4 ,i felt very sorry for them4 ,i told them several times what we ought to do in this world while we live4 ,they said they would never be afraid when they die where the soul would go4 ,i presume they will do all things as they please4 ,i left my place1 and came on shore two weeks since4 ,but ,i cannot find any situation yet1 because it is very
