as liberal as the donation of ,mr4 ,avery2 and as a result1 the ,church ,missionary ,society of ,england is sustaining a mission at ,uganda1 in ,mtesa's ,kingdom4 ,when ,dr4 ,livingstone was in the heart of ,africa1 he wrote3 8,come on1 brethren1 to the real heathen4 ,you have no idea how brave you are till you try40 ,his words were caught up1 and the story of his explorations1 devoured with eagerness1 resulted in the establishment of three missions at least1 far in the interior4 ,more than #fj1jjj was given for the establishment of ,livingstonia1 on the ,nyassa ,lake4 ,a large amount was also given for the ,university's ,mission in the same vicinity1 and #be1jjj by ,mr4 ,arthington1 of ,leeds1 to the ,london ,missionary ,society1 for the purpose of establishing a mission at ,ujiji1 on the shores of the ,tanganyika4 ,to this latter amount was added a sum sufficient for sending forth a full corps of missionaries to that locality1 and recent reports warrant the hope that they have already reached their destination4 ,perhaps no more striking illustration of the parallelisms we have suggested has been exhibited1 than the one recently brought to our knowledge by the report of ,mr4 ,stanley's explorations1 and the doings of the ,baptist ,missionary ,society of ,london4 ,last ,may1 this ,society received a letter1 stating1 8,there is a part of ,africa on which ,i have long had my eye4 ,it is the ,congo country4 ,there is not much knowledge of the ,christian religion in the ,congo4 ,only three or four of its inhabitants can read and write4 ,the language of the coast is the original ,african4 ,the old king has strongly expressed his hopes that some white men would come to them4 ,it is1 therefore1 a great satisfaction1 and a high and sacred favor to me1 to offer #a1jjj if ,dr4 ,kirk was born in ,new ,york ,city1 was graduated from ,princeton ,college1 and pursued legal studies for a year and a half1 living a life which he characterizes as profligate4 ,his conversion1 after a severe struggle1 was complete1 and the purpose of his life was utterly changed4 ,he immediately devoted himself to preparation for the ministry of the gospel4 ,handsome1 gifted and ardent1 he at once took a leading position4 ,his two pastorates1 at ,albany and in ,boston1 were full of fruitfulness4 ,while yet a pastor1 he did the work of an evangelist1 with a power and success which has been seldom paralleled4 ,he was a direct and pungent preacher1 sometimes1 as in ,albany1 stirring up opposition1 and yet wonderfully tender and conciliating in his manner1 and so gaining friends even from those who antagonized him4 ,he was always a reformer1 but a radical only in the best sense4 ,he spoke manfully of the slave1 and of the possibilities of the ,african race1 in #ahbj1 when only in promising young persons to the schools within their reach1 and in every other way4 ,resolved1 ,that the necessity for aid from the ,north is still pressing1 and that the ,american ,missionary ,association be requested and urged to continue its assistance in this direction4 ,in regard to ,church ,extension the following resolution was passed1 viz43 ,that the needs of the churches represented in this ,conference call for the appointment of a man of wisdom and experience to be a ,missionary ,superintendent1 whose labors should be first directed toward establishing1 upon a firm ,now1 it does not require a profundity of knowledge to tell who and what these men are2 what has been their past history1 what it is now1 and what it will probably be in the future4 ,all these we can pretty well determine4 ,it is stated on good authority that a petition will be sent to ,congress praying for aid2 the exact amount is not stated4 ,however1 ,i am confident that ,i express the feelings of hundreds of the better-thinking colored citizens when ,i say that ,congress should make no appropriation for any such pell-mell movement4 ,if ,congress wishes to make an appropriation for the negro1 let it make it with the restrictions that it shall be used to pay off the deficit caused by the sinking of the ,freedmen's ,savings ,bank1 or for the purchasing of lands and outfits in the great ,west1 that the negro may wend his way thither1 build up and utilize the hitherto barren country4 ,in ,south ,carolina1 it is said1 thousands are selling or letting their little farms and homes by way of preparation for leaving ,america2 men1 women and children all have the ,african mania4 ,my advice to these people now is this3 ,to pay no attention to these fair promises2 if they have sold their homes1 buy them back if possible2 if they have leased their farms1 rent others till the lease expires and then return to their own2 or1 if this is not desirable1 seek homes in the great ,west1 number1 cost the government nearly #b1jjj1jjj annually for the pay of the army that takes care of them2 while the #fj1jjj ,cherokees1 who are civilized and quiet1 cost us almost nothing4 --,the governor and delegates of the ,chickasaw nation1 and the delegates of the ,choctaw nation1 have united in a memorial to the ,senate1 remonstrating against the passage of the bill to enable ,indians to become citizens4 ,they say3 ,we have no objection to the measure in so far as it permits citizens of our nations to become citizens of the ,united ,states1 if upon such change of citizenship they leave our jurisdiction1 and surrender all rights growing out of and depending upon the tribal relation1 retaining1 however1 all their separate property4 ,but this bill expressly provides that1 after one of our citizens becomes a citizen of the ,united ,states1 he shall retain all his rights and interests in the lands1 claims1 annuities1 funds1 and other property of our nations or tribes4 ,the result of these provisions is that after he ceases to be a citizen of the ,choctaw or ,chickasaw nation1 he retains every right which he had while a citizen4 ,the proposed statute will violate the the murderer2 and only the determined resistance of the sheriff at the time of arrest1 had saved the town from the disgraceful presence of ,judge ,lynch4 ,a murder committed by a white man would not1 ,i think1 have affected unfavorably a meeting in behalf of home missions2 rather1 such an event would have given it special point and interest2 but a black man being the criminal1 the result was different4 ,the meeting was small1 and yet ,i should not be surprised if that meeting at ,sheffield should prove to be the most fruitful in results of any held4 ,that murder ought to lead the 8sober second thought0 of the community to a very hearty endorsement of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and ,i believe it will4 ,the uniform heartiness with which the ministers of ,connecticut evening in ,lee--the well-known go-to-meeting habits of the people gave us a large audience1 compared with some other places visited on pleasant evenings2 and in connection with the weather1 how can ,i forbear mention of the country--its native beauty1 striking grandeur1 and historic interest--who that knows ,new ,england can be ignorant of these8 ,valleys where poets might go crazy in the vain the best development of our country4 ,these 8sceptred dead10 from whom not yet has the realm of empire departed6 ,what with pleasant weather1 beautiful scenery1 romantic tales and historic reminiscence1 the fatigue of travel and wear of speaking1 were considerably lightened4 ,in many cases1 the afternoon meetings proved1 both in point of numbers and interest1 the best4 ,people who leave their homes and business in the afternoon1 riding in some cases four or five miles to attend a meeting1 bring with them an inspiration which a speaker cannot fail to feel2 and after he has gone1 his words remain to be thought over and acted upon4 ,what a difference between an audience pleased only when the speaker entertains them1 and one that is gathered because of already awakened interest in the cause of missions6 ,well1 we had both kinds1 but our afternoon audiences were chiefly of the latter4 ,buckland1 ,ashfield1 ,lee1 ,amherst and ,chicopee1 are especially worthy of mention for the large audiences given us1 while1 with the exception of two places1 which ,i will not mention1 all the others accorded us a generous hearing1 larger indeed than1 under the circumstances1 could have been expected4 ,a little episode occurred during the first week1 that broke up our speaking force for a few days1 but added at the same time to the value of the campaign4 ,the ,worcester ,central ,missionary ,society held its ,fifty-,third ,annual ,meeting1 ,december #fth1 in ,worcester1 to which meeting ,mr4 ,woodworth and myself repaired1 and occupied a full hour kindly given us1 to set forth the claims of the ,american ,missionary ,association2 while ,mr4 ,cutler1 reinforced by ,mr4 ,pike1 kept on1 and filled the appointments in their original order4 ,there were two things about this ,worcester meeting ,i wish to mention4 ,first1 it indicated the growing interest of the churches in the subject of missions4 ,this ,society was organized fifty-two years ago as auxiliary to the ,american ,board1 and1 during these intervening years1 has preserved this exclusive relation4 ,this year the ,society voted to change its constitution1 in order that hereafter all the ,missionary causes may have recognition in its deliberations and benefactions4 ,secondly1 this meeting indicated that a whole day can be profitably given by the churches in convention assembled1 to the consideration of missions4 ,from the beginning the power of the meeting increased1 and the evening session1 at which there was a mingling of stirring pleas for the ,education ,society1 the ,board ,home ,missions1 and the ,missionary ,association1 was the crowning interest of the day4 ,brethren1 let us move for a 8,missionary ,day0 in our conferences1 and put the ,missionary ,societies under requisition for the very best material they can furnish to kindle a fire of missionary enthusiasm in our churches4 ,the ,sabbath following this ,worcester meeting was spent by ,mr4 ,woodworth in ,worcester1 ,mr4 ,cutler in ,gardner in the morning1 and with his former charge in ,athol1 in the evening2 while ,i went to ,keene1 ,new ,hampshire1 and spent the day with my old ,seminary class-mate1 ,rev4 ,cyrus ,richardson4 ,his sensitive regard for my physical well-being1 led him to let me off with three preaching services1 at all of which ,i had to talk ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 and all the time4 ,the evening meeting was a crowded union service1 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,leech coming over with his people in full force1 showing that the churches of ,keene have a warm place in their hearts for missionary work among the despised races in ,america4 ,by previous arrangement1 we were to again unite our forces at ,buckland1 near ,sherburne ,falls1 on ,monday afternoon2 but 8,the best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft agley40 ,mr4 ,woodworth failed to start1 ,mr4 ,cutler missed his train1 and ,i found myself dumped at a station1 marked ,buckland in the railway guide1 three miles away from the town1 and the only living creature ,i discovered1 from which to get directions what to do and where to go1 was a poor little cat that came bounding to my side1 purring out as plainly as anything could be said--8,i am glad to see you40 ,after a brief interchange of the compliments of the season1 ,i buttoned my overcoat1 adjusted my satchel1 and started up the only road it was possible to take1 and in the only direction possible--for the road terminated at a river1 on the bank of which stood the depot4 ,it proved to be the right way4 ,how easy it would be to get along if the right way was the only way in which we could go6 ,as ,i drew near the village1 the cheery notes of the church bell rung out their merry call1 while well-filled carriages1 whirling along in the direction of the church1 told me that the people were evidently interested in missions4 ,i was on hand1 and in time4 ,a fine audience had gathered2 but my brethren1 where were they8 ,well1 they did not come2 that was all ,i knew1 and in their absence ,i did the best ,i could4 ,the gift of continuance was given me in copious plenteousness1 and the time was exhausted before ,i was4 ,i failed to notice1 however1 whether my audience was not also exhausted4 ,the next day the disjecta membra came together again at ,sherburne ,falls1 and henceforth to the close kept together4 ,and now as ,i review this entire series of meetings1 the question comes--have they been profitable8 ,others1 ,i presume1 will ask the same question1 and therefore ,i take a brief space to answer it as ,i may be able4 ,the object we had in view was1 first1 to impart information concerning the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and to discuss its claims upon the churches1 to the end that the receipts of its treasury might be increased1 and its work correspondingly strengthened2 and1 secondly1 that the distinctive missionary nature of our work might have a more prominent place in the religious thought of the churches1 and thus become a factor in the development of such ,christian life as has a tender regard for those who are despised and poor and oppressed4 ,so far1 then1 as our object is concerned1 we must wait for time to bring an answer1 but the meetings themselves developed certain data out of which we can construct an answer4 ,the data are these3 ,first1 while no contributions were asked for or taken from
