,american ,missionary ,association goes on with steady increase4 ,we glide from one year to another noiselessly1 and take up on the ,new ,year's ,day the same tools we dropped when the signal came that the working hours of the old year were ended4 ,one seems very much like the other1 and yet1 as we look back1 we find that each year has1 to some extent1 a character and a work of its own4 ,changes come unheralded1 proportions vary2 each phase is now conspicuous and now in almost eclipse1 while the whole work goes on4 ,a few years ago it was the large number of our common school teachers sent from the ,north to the just-opened ,southern field2 then came the era of ,normal instruction1 as the ,states opened schools for the colored children1 but could not furnish schoolmasters fit to teach them4 ,the facilities for higher education1 and1 especially1 for training for the ministry1 came in then for our care--#ahgg saw what seemed to be the beginning of the end in this direction1 in the sending of three men1 trained in our schools1 for missionary work to ,africa4 ,what shall be the peculiar work of #ahgh8 ,there is no portion of the whole which those who work through us are willing to have dropped4 ,among the ,indians1 what little we have done we must continue to do1 until some ,providence as plain as that which gave it to our hands shall discharge us from the duty4 ,we cannot withdraw our help from the churches on the ,pacific ,coast1 in their endeavors to lead the ,chinaman through the knowledge of the ,english language to the ,god of the ,english-speaking people4 ,we cannot close the ,normal school1 for the intelligent ,christian teacher is yet the greatest want of the ,southern ,freedmen4 ,to the young men who desire to preach ,christ ,jesus and ,him crucified to their own people1 we cannot deny the instruction in the word of ,god and in the truths of religion which they ask of us4 ,all these1 which are distinctively departments of ,christian effort1 must be kept up1 and1 especially1 this work among the negro youth of the great ,south4 ,what we should be glad to make the great and characteristic work of the new year1 is the ,southern church work4 ,we have now more students in our three theological schools than we have churches in the entire ,south4 ,of course1 this does not limit the opportunity of these young men4 ,it does not altogether destroy our influence through them4 ,they will go out and preach the ,gospel1 but they must go into other ecclesiastical relations to fill churches of other orders1 and1 as we feel1 many of them to do far less telling work for ,god and good than they might in churches founded anew by them under our care4 ,this direct evangelizing and church work is very dear to those to whom the management of this ,association is entrusted4 ,shall #ahgh be for us the year of church extension8 ,there are favoring conditions in more respects than one4 ,the comparative freedom of the ,south from political agitations gives the opportunity for undisturbed effort for the enlargement of this work4 ,the impulse given by the ,syracuse meeting will be felt long by us and by all connected with the ,association4 ,the diminution of the debt already relieves for use in active service nearly #c1jjj a year1 which was absorbed by its imperative demands4 ,if this debt can be wholly put behind us we may add this to the achievements of the coming year4 ,it is easier to write prophecy than history1 and yet the pen will glide lightly over the paper1 and the press will resound with a more cheery clatter than in other days1 if a year from now1 they shall be able to make it known that the churches in the ,south have been largely increased in numbers and efficiency1 and that the debt of the ,association has every cent of it been paid4 ,with a 8happy new year0 all round the circle1 officers1 missionaries1 teachers1 contributors1 let us to the work6 99 99 99 99 99 ,in the fall of #ahff1 ,mr4 ,warren ,ackermann gave to the ,foreign ,board of the ,reformed ,church of ,america #ee1jjj in one gift1 thus entirely extinguishing its debt1 and leaving it a fund of nearly #aj1jjj for expenditure upon the field4 ,last spring the ,presbyterian ,board of ,foreign ,missions was on the point of reporting a debt of #ej1jjj1 when a like gift1 by the liberality of ,mrs4 ,john ,c4 ,green1 of ,new ,york1 freed them from that necessity1 and enabled them to close the year without a deficit4 ,the ,methodist ,episcopal ,missionary ,committee1 by special effort during the last year1 paid off over #ajj1jjj of their large indebtedness4 ,none of us have forgotten the noble spontaneity of the successful movement this fall at ,providence1 resulting in the complete liberation of the ,american ,board from their debt of nearly #ej1jjj1 and we cannot fail to notice with rejoicing every success of 8the finangelist0 7as he has been called71 ,mr4 ,kimball1 in casting the mountains of church debt into the sea of solvency4 ,all these things encourage us to hope and pray and labor for great things4 ,our debt is diminished already from #ic1bcb4ii to #eg1haf4ij4 ,this is quite within the average of the sums named above4 ,not one of these societies or churches but will say3 8,these gifts1 to deliver us from the bondage of debt1 have proved the grandest helps to our forward work40 ,let no one think that money thus given does not tell upon the work4 ,it does tell3 not this year alone1 but every year it puts money in our purse to be expended in the directest furtherance of our mission to carry the ,gospel of light and love to the poor and neglected races4 ,it is in effect a permanent fund1 the interest of which we have for yearly use4 ,is there not some one1 or may there not be more far-sighted men1 to whom the ,lord has entrusted a liberal share of ,his gold and silver1 whom these examples and this opportunity may stimulate8 99 99 99 99 99 ,in accordance with the decision at the last ,anniversary ,meeting of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 the printing of this paper will be done hereafter in ,new ,york ,city4 ,in parting with ,general ,armstrong and his printers at ,hampton1 it gives us pleasure to bear our warmest testimony to their uniform courtesy and to their untiring efforts to relieve1 as far as possible1 the unavoidable difficulty of printing at so great a distance from these rooms4 ,of the excellence of the work done at the ,hampton office1 we need use no words of commendation1 for each successive number has carried to our readers its best evidence4 ,during the past year1 as we learn from ,general ,armstrong1 it has given help to eight young colored girls who1 as folders1 have been able to earn enough to materially assist them in meeting their school bills2 it has given steady employment to two young men who1 twelve years ago1 were enrolled in the first schools opened at ,hampton by the ,association4 ,from little bright-eyed pickaninnies they have grown to be competent printers2 they are now a help to their parents and are growing up to be among the solid men of ,hampton4 ,extra help being needed1 a very worthy colored mechanic in ,litchfield1 ,conn4 was engaged4 ,he not only worked on the ,,missionary1 but having rented a house in a region destitute of workers1 he at once gathered the young and the old1 and every ,sunday morning during the summer a motley crowd of about fifty in number was collected in his verandah4 ,seated on boxes1 tubs1 pails1 etc41 they received excellent instruction from ,mr4 ,rowe1 through whose good work we hope that some who were blind can now see4 ,the officers of the ,hampton ,institute bear testimony to the decided benefits received from the printing of the ,,missionary at ,hampton4 ,it has been of no small advantage as an aid to the ,industrial ,department there1 which is the peculiar and difficult feature of the ,institute4 99 99 99 99 99 ,with this number1 then1 the ,,missionary returns wholly to this office and its vicinity for preparation4 ,as our readers have already noticed1 the advice of the ,annual ,meeting has been followed in restoring it to its old form1 which many of its familiar friends think more becoming than the perhaps sprightlier1 but less dignified manner of the last year4 ,we trust they will not like it less because it has a little more of body than formerly1 and is attired in a new1 and1 we trust1 not inappropriate dress4 ,a few of its additional pages are given to advertisements by the same advice4 ,we shall be glad to serve and be served by our friends1 who know our circulation and constituency1 in opening to them this channel of communication with one another4 ,it is our hope to make the ,,missionary of certainly as much1 and1 if possible1 of more value than in former years4 ,we should be glad to do what we can to dissipate the impression that an exposition of ,christian opportunity and a record of ,christian work is of necessity dry reading--of use mainly by way of fitting preparation for a ,sunday afternoon nap4 ,we know that the opportunities1 if realized1 are full of encouragement and stimulus1 and that the work itself is intense in its earnestness and interest4 ,we know that the considerations which enforce its claims are among those which appeal most irresistibly to thoughtful men1 and stir their deepest feelings4 ,if the presentation1 then1 be dry1 it must be the dulness of those who write1 or the indifference of those who read4 ,we will try to prevent this at one end if our friends will at the other4 ,we shall try to procure the freshest and most recent news from the field1 in regard to the general progress and the particular incidents of the work1 by diligent application to our missionaries and teachers--remembering ourselves1 and reminding others1 that they are busy men and women1 far more intent on doing the work than in telling about it4 ,we shall endeavor to give1 in condensed form1 a record of the current events1 religious1 social and sometimes political1 which affect the various departments of our work4 ,we hope to arrange for special presentation of the nature and needs of our larger institutions in successive numbers4 ,so we shall try to bring within the range of our readers' vision the stars of larger and of lesser magnitude which gem our ,southern and ,western sky1 only regretting that our1 like other telescopes1 can only bring far-off things a little nearer--can by no means reveal them as they are4 ,with the old form we return1 of necessity1 to the old subscription price--#ej cents a year4 ,will our good friends remember that if each of our #be1jjj magazines should bring us in a half a dollar1 they would be a source of income to the ,association1 beside the valuable service which it does us indirectly8 ,if this suggestion impresses any one favorably1 please let the money be inclosed1 and the letter sealed and directed at once before it can be forgotten4 ,in accordance with the further recommendation of the ,annual ,meeting1 ,rev4 ,george ,m4 ,boynton1 of ,newark1 ,n4 ,j41 who1 as a member of the ,executive ,committee1 is familiar with the work1 and whose pen has contributed freely to our columns during the last year1 has been associated with us in the editorial charge of the ,,missionary4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,woman',s ,,work ,,for ,,woman4 ,specific missionary work by devoted women1 among the colored women and girls in the ,south1 is one of the many interesting departments of our enterprise4 8,woman's work for woman0 has not been neglected1 although it has not been made prominent before the public by the ,association4 ,it is enough to say that more than three-fourths of our missionaries have been women1 and the majority of our church members and pupils1 females1 to make it evident that much work of this kind must have been done2 still it has not been singled out and magnified as the work to which1 as an association1 we had given ourselves4 ,it has all along been a matter of deep regret that we could not make more of this branch of our work4 ,we have noted the inexpressibly sad condition of the colored woman in the ,south--no future before her1 public opinion giving her no recognized standing of respectability1 dooming her to an evil reputation1 whether in character she was deserving it or not1 and this1 too1 in a ,christian country--these things we have noted and felt2 but our receipts were all swallowed up in the current demands of our general work4 ,we are glad to be permitted to record that a step has recently been taken1 promising relief in this direction4 ,a lady in one of the ,western ,states1 who has been for years known as an indefatigable worker for ,christian missions1 has had the elevation and salvation of the colored women of our country on her heart and mind for years4 ,she has made herself thoroughly acquainted with the fact that if anything is done1 it must be in addition to what the ordinary receipts of the ,american ,missionary ,association would warrant4 ,self-moved1 she said to our ,executive ,committee a few months ago1 8,if you will commission a competent and devoted woman missionary and assign her to one of your mission stations1 to give herself entirely to the work of visiting the homes of the colored women1 for the purpose of saving them by the use of every method her enlightened judgment may suggest as wise1 ,i will become personally responsible for her support1 and will pledge that what ,i do shall not in any way interfere with the general receipts of the ,association40 ,the ,executive ,committee thankfully accepted the proposition4 ,a lady missionary was appointed and sent to ,memphis1 ,tenn41 in ,november4 ,she entered at once upon the field1 and the beginnings of her work are full of promise1 and already assure us of the usefulness of her mission4 ,we hear from ,memphis the week after her arrival of the favorable impression made1 and of the rejoicing on the part of our teachers that there is help for them in the homes of their pupils and in mothers' meetings1 etc4 ,one teacher says1 8,i hope to visit with her a little1 especially to take her to the homes of our girls40 ,another writes1 8,we regard her being sent here as a special ,providence in our favor4 ,i think there is no place where she could do more40 ,we trust that many such workers may be sent by the ,christian women of the ,north to these their needy sisters in the ,south4 ,the ,advance mentions the ,church ,sewing ,circle as the medium1 and the spring as the most convenient time1 to carry out the following suggestion4 ,in this way1 it says1 there need be no friction between what is done for the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 and other missionary work3 8,there was a time1 directly following the war1 when the ,american ,missionary ,association was wonderfully aided in its work by the special efforts of the philanthropic women4 ,there has been nothing finer done in the way of immediately urgent but far-reaching influence1 by the ,christian women of ,america1 either before or since4 ,every one rejoices in the helpfulness of the ,woman's ,boards1 creating and fostering as they do a mighty interest on behalf of their benighted sisters in heathen lands1 and we will not believe the ,christian women in our ,american churches incapable of again inaugurating some similar work1 equally worthy of them1 toward meeting the inexpressibly urgent moral necessities of their sadly darkened and depressed sisters nearer home40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,jubilee ,,singers ,,at ,,the ,,imperial ,,court ,,of ,,germany4 ,the ,jubilee ,singers have recently gone to ,germany to continue the work they have for the last six years been so successfully doing in the ,united ,states1 ,great ,britain and ,holland1 in the interests of the education of their race at ,fisk ,university1 ,nashville1 ,tenn4 ,within a few days of their arrival at ,berlin1 they had the honor of appearing before the ,imperial family of ,germany under circumstances of peculiar interest4 ,they were invited by their ,imperial ,highnesses1 the ,crown ,prince and ,crown ,princess1 to sing some of their slave songs at the ,new ,palace1 ,potsdam1 on ,sunday afternoon1 ,nov4 #d1 and on presenting themselves at the appointed hour they found1 to their joy1 that they stood in the presence of ,his ,imperial ,majesty1 the ,emperor of ,germany1 as well as in the presence of the ,crown ,prince and ,princess1 with their children gathered around them4 ,thus three generations stood together in the home circle1 listening to this little company of emancipated slaves from the ,united ,states1 as they sang the songs of the days of their bondage4 ,and never did their strange1 touching songs produce a deeper impression1 or call forth heartier expressions of sympathy for1 and interest in1 the work they are laboring to do for their race in ,america and in ,africa4 ,his ,majesty1 the ,emperor1 made many inquiries of the ,president of the ,university respecting the ,singers1 and their personal history1 and the work they had accomplished1 while the ,crown ,prince and the ,crown ,princess conversed freely with the ,singers1 making inquiries1 and expressing great delight in the singing4 ,it was especially gratifying to learn from the ,crown ,princess that four years ago1 when the ,jubilee ,singers had the honor of singing before her ,royal ,mother1 the ,queen of ,england1 she had received a long letter speaking of the ,singers and their mission4 ,the ,crown ,prince said1 8,these songs1 as you sing them1 go to the heart--they go through and through one40 ,the first public concert was given in ,berlin1 at the ,sing ,academy1 on the #gth of ,november1 and was greeted with such hearty demonstrations of approval1 that success in ,germany seems quite well assured4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,good ,,use ,,of ,,negro ,,suffrage4 ,an article of two and a half columns in an ,augusta1 ,ga4 paper1 begins thus3 8,the ,superior ,court room in the ,city ,hall was crowded last evening with the colored voters of the county who had assembled to listen to addresses from ,hon4 ,jos4 ,b4 ,cumming1 the ,democratic nominee for ,senator1 from the ,eighteenth ,senatorial ,district1 and ,hon4 ,h4 ,clay ,foster1 ,independent candidate for the same position4 ,both these gentlemen were present by invitation of the colored people themselves40 ,then follow abstracts of the speeches of the two candidates1 wherein each attempts to show the colored voters that he has a stronger claim upon them than his competitor4 ,this political gathering was peculiar in several respects4 ,the audience was composed of ,republicans1 while the speakers were both avowed ,democrats4 ,the assemblage comprised a distinct class in the ,senatorial district4 ,this class was composed of those who during most of their lives had enjoyed fewest opportunities to obtain knowledge and learn how to vote intelligently4 ,and what is most vital1 they1 as the speakers seemed to tacitly acknowledge1 held the balance of power4 ,in other words1 they1 whatever their standing might be in society1 and whatever qualifications they might possess or lack1 were to decide which of the two candidates should represent the ,,people of the ,eighteenth ,district in the ,state ,senate4 ,whether or not it was humiliating to the pride of 8high-bred0 citizens of the ,empire ,state of the ,south to vie with each other thus publicly in soliciting the votes of their former servants1 is of little consequence4 ,neither is it a matter of very great import that a political gathering of 8niggers0 7negroes would be more elegant1 but less pointed17 was respectfully addressed by ,southern white men1 and respectfully referred to by a ,georgia ,democratic paper4 ,that all the colored voters of that district will be urged and helped to pay their taxes1 and thus for one year at least avoid disfranchisement1 and will have an opportunity to vote unmolested1 though a good reason for congratulation1 is nothing worthy of very great consideration4 ,but the prominent and startling feature of this incident is the fact that those who1 through no fault of theirs1 are least qualified for the responsible trust1 hold the balance of power and cast the decisive vote4 ,in this instance1 no great issues are involved1 and if1 under the influence of wise and virtuous leaders of their own race1 our colored friends always see as clearly what is really for their good1 the danger will be lessened4 ,as an indication of what is now uppermost in their minds upon such occasions1 and for the encouragement of those who contribute to the funds of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 ,i will quote the questions they put to the candidates3 8#a4 ,are you in favor of the ,states levying a tax for educational purposes--the benefit to be equally enjoyed by all classes8 8#b4 ,are you in favor of the ,state continuing the annual appropriation of #h1jjj to the ,atlanta ,university for the higher education of the colored youth8 8#c4 ,are you in favor of the law known as the #8,laborers and ,mechanics' ,lien ,law'80 ,such danger coupled with such encouragement ought to nerve the arms of ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 laborers1 and stimulate the alms-giving of its contributors4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we are rejoiced to hear of the increasing prosperity of ,howard ,university under the presidency of ,dr4 ,w4 ,w4 ,patton4 ,the attendance and attention of the students to their work1 is1 we are informed1 most gratifying and encouraging4 ,dr4 ,patton1 in addition to his presidential duties1 fills an important chair in the ,theological department1 the maintenance of which department our ,association shares with the ,presbytery of 99 99 99 99 ,the appeal is made especially in ,south ,carolina and ,louisiana1 on the ground of the changed political situation1 which is interpreted to signify a denial of the rights of the negro are enrolled on impulse1 and with little consideration1 and speedily swell to large proportions4 ,it is much easier to write a book of ,exodus than to cross the sea and go through the wilderness4 99 99 99 99 99 ,meanwhile1 the question of emigration is being1 of necessity1 investigated4 ,among intelligent colored men1 some press their right to the country in which they have been born1 and for which they have shed their blood2 others suggest that the wealthy inhabitants of the rich ,republic of ,liberia send over vessels to transport them there1 so proving their ability2 others1 less wise there is no settled and general peace among the ,indian tribes4 ,some #a1gjj ,sioux broke away while being removed from the ,red ,cloud agency to their new agency on the ,missouri ,river1 and are now on the war path4 ,they have since been committing depredations in the immediate vicinity of ,deadwood1 ,dakota4 ,they number about two hundred lodges1 a number not sufficient in itself to render operations against them on a large scale necessary1 but probably quite large enough to keep our small available force 7exhausted as it is by the long campaign against the ,nez ,percs7 fully occupied should the ,indians open hostilities4 ,although a general ,indian war is not considered to be imminent1 such an event is not impossible as the outcome of the present troubles1 and may be deemed almost probable4 ,the most serious feature of the situation lies in the probability that the many roving bands who live in the country north and west of the ,black ,hills1 and who are thought to be in sympathy with ,sitting ,bull1 and to have experienced more or less injustice at the hands of the whites1 will join with the small band which is creating the present alarm at ,deadwood1 and thus bring about an outbreak which it would be quite beyond the power of our present reduced military establishment to suppress4 ,the opinion is expressed by officers at the ,war ,department1 that the removal of troops from the ,black ,hills region to the ,texas border1 may result in the protection of people in the latter section1 at the expense of the lives of those who are exposed to much greater danger4 ,meanwhile1 the ,ponca ,indians have sent a deputation to ,washington1 to remonstrate with the ,president against their removal to a new reservation4 ,they are a peaceful and civilized people1 who cannot bear to leave the houses1 schools and churches they have built and maintained4 ,the assurances which they received of restitution for their losses1 and protection in their new homes1 though country at present from his retreat across the ,canada border4 ,his camp1 however1 keeps up communication with hostile tribes1 stimulating dissatisfaction1 and inciting hostility2 it furnishes an asylum1 also1 to fugitives from justice--one hundred of the defeated ,nez ,percs are now there4 ,the commission suggests1 as required by international comity and usage1 that they be removed so far ,british ,america1 is the reason the ,english ,government is enabled to manage them so easily4 ,we can make no such restriction1 with our growing population4 ,the report recommends as progress toward civilization that the ,indians be gathered in smaller reservations and taught agriculture and cattle raising2 that small tracts be deeded each one1 so that they may have fixed homes2 that hunting be truthfulness of the statements of that document1 it offers a very weak foundation on which to base a legislative enactment4 ,this we know to be false4 ,those who have read our monthly letters from ,mr4 ,pond will not need to be reminded that more than a hundred in our schools alone are now giving convincing evidence that they are ,christian men1 and that not simply in name1 but in deed and in and life4 ,nearly one hundred people met in and around a log schoolhouse hardly large enough to hold half the number4 ,those outside1 however1 were about as favorably situated as those within1 for the crevices between the logs were about as large as the logs themselves4 ,a ,congregational church1 of six men and women1 was organized4 ,three others expected to unite with them1 but were kept away that day4 ,four or five more will unite soon1 and we have reason to expect a vigorous church there4 ,it is one of the best and largest neighborhoods in the region1 and the people have already set to work upon a church building4 ,the next ,sabbath ,i was there again1 and baptized six persons4 ,last ,sabbath ,i went up to ,anniston1 twenty-five miles away1 where another student is in charge of the ,congregational church4 ,there have been twenty-one conversions in this church during the summer4 ,i immersed nine1 baptized nine by sprinkling1 and received nineteen into the church4 ,the little church building was crowded to its utmost capacity in the evening1 hardly room enough being left upon the platform for the speaker4 ,the church and parsonage adjoining1 finished and painted with taste1 clean and tidy inside and out1 as well as the energetic and faithful pastor and his wife1 and their earnest1 quiet1 decorous people1 remind one of a ,new ,england village church4 ,the contrast with most of the neighboring churches is very marked4 ,i go again next ,sabbath to ,childersburg1 twenty miles south1 to baptize and receive into that church quite a number of converts4 ,the school is ,,montgomery4 ,i have seen all my people in their homes now1 and some of them repeatedly1 have had a crowded and very pleasant reception at the 8,home10 and begin to feel as if ,i knew the ground4 ,i see great reason for encouragement4 ,we have #fj members on the ground whom ,i can find1 and who seem to be quite as consistent as the average church members at the ,north4 ,this1 out of a list of #gg1 seems to me a pretty good showing4 ,half of the absentee list is accounted for by the former teachers who have not taken their letters1 and students at ,atlanta and ,talladega4 ,i have more reliable 8prayer-meeting0 members in proportion to our number than most pastors enjoy4 8,pauses0 in the prayer meeting have not yet been introduced4 ,the majority of ,christians who come to prayer-meeting at all seem to take it for granted that they must take an active part in carrying it forward2 and the majority1 male and female1 do so with great acceptance4 ,they are free from the 8,shame-facedness0 of ,northern ,christians about religious activity2 and have not yet fallen into any routine ways4 ,of course they are generally ignorant2 but ,i find their spiritual exercises very quickening and helpful to me4 ,in this respect the work is very delightful4 ,we sustain two prayer meetings every week1 at the church ,wednesday evening1 and from house to house ,monday evening2 and ,i have begun a young people's meeting ,sunday evening half an hour before regular service1 which opens with good promise4 ,the ,lord has given us one soul as a pledge of ,his readiness to bless4 ,a bright1 promising young girl has been seeking ,christ for a long time1 but has been hindered by the general superstitious notion that she must have a vision or tangible evidence of ,god having heard her prayers4 ,she has finally been persuaded to trust ,god1 and try to walk by faith1 and has found peace in believing4 ,so we can already set up our ,ebenezer1 and go forward4 ,outside of the direct church work ,i am impressed with two things especially4 ,first1 that a good number of the people are making substantial progress in material things4 ,they show a very healthy tendency to seek the outskirts of the city1 and to obtain homes of their own4 ,montgomery is girdled all around with little cottages 7not very fine1 to be sure1 but a vast improvement on the plantation cabins71 which they have built on land bought with their savings since ,emancipation4 ,the ,democratic ,legislature a year ago took advantage of this fact1 and1 by drawing in the city limits1 changed ,montgomery from a ,republican to a ,democratic town1 throwing out a thousand colored votes4 ,this shows the extent of the movement4 ,the second thing which has struck me1 is the improvement in the old churches2 or rather the evident straining after something better4 ,there cannot be much change while the present generation of ignorant preachers survives2 but the changes recently have all been for the better1 and a new ,baptist organization has just been started among the people themselves with no outside persuasion1 with the avowed purpose of securing an educated minister and maintaining better discipline4 ,it is an interesting fact that the leaders in this last movement are all men who have been in close relations with our church and its work4 ,i think our ,northern friends need have no fear of the effect upon our principles of ,southern kindness here in ,montgomery4 ,the white people let us severely alone1 unless they can make a little money out of us4 ,the ,presbyterian ,pastor1 progress than we have been accustomed to find4 ,we regret the absence of many girls1 who prefer teaching to thoroughly fitting themselves for their work4 ,with very limited qualifications1 they secure positions in country schools1 where they doubtless do fair work for present needs4 ,some time1 they will see the mistake of not pursuing their studies further4 ,our ,thursday evening family readings have been resumed4 ,this week the ,alumni joined us4 ,when two or three guests have come1 it has been the habit to have an author designated1 but this time the circle was so large it was thought best to invite each to contribute any selection he chose4 ,the first offering was ,joseph ,cook's remarks upon uneducated suffrage in the ,south4 ,it provoked very earnest discussion4 ,every one was surprised at ,mr4 ,cook's familiarity with the true condition of affairs4 ,a young man who has taught in the neighborhood1 was inclined to dispute the educational statistics4 8,go out into the country and you will find that most of the children can read a little10 was one remark4 ,he admitted the ignorance of the adults4 ,he is certainly mistaken in applying his statement to the country at large1 however true it may be of the region within a radius of thirty miles from this city4 ,his hopefulness concerning the children is an offset to the report of another young man teaching forty-five miles away1 where the children in ,sabbath ,school could not tell who betrayed ,christ1 or answer similarly easy questions4 ,i think it is the same place where the minister told his people1 in a vivid description of the ,flood1 that 8the rain drops fell as large as a flour barrel40 ,our student teachers have generally accomplished excellent work during vacation4 ,some of the least promising have shown capabilities which surprised us4 ,we commence the year with hope as to the intellectual progress to be attained1 and trembling over the spiritual condition of the school4 ,several of the active ,christians1 heretofore leaders1 do not return to us4 ,their influence is missed4 ,the new element is earnest and determined so far as lessons and deportment are concerned1 but indifferent towards was formed here called the ,state ,teachers' ,institute4 ,its object is the promotion of education1 and especially that of the colored people in ,tennessee and adjoining territory4 ,it embraces in its membership all those engaged in the work of colored education who may choose to join it4 ,it unites all the forces so engaged in a general educational effort for lifting up the common schools1 by improving those who teach them4 ,it operates in accordance with the views of the ,state ,superintendent of ,education1 by whom it is endorsed and to whom it reports4 ,the plan was first proposed by this institution1 and the ,methodist and ,baptist institutions located here heartily responded4 ,it thus forms a bond of union and a way of co-operation long felt to be desirable on the part of schools of learning occupying the same ground4 ,it also unites these with the public schools1 and combines all educational forces in the work among the freedmen4 ,during the summer1 sixteen local institutes were held in ,tennessee and ,north ,alabama1 with a total attendance of five hundred teachers4 ,these institutes continued two or three days each and varied in attendance from fifteen to seventy-five each day4 ,two sessions were held in the day time1 and one at night4 ,the day sessions were for the professional instruction of teachers of schools4 ,this was done by lectures1 class drills and the like1 adapting those exercises to circumstances and persons1 aiming always at practical benefit to the teachers present4 ,the sessions at night were made popular gatherings in the interest of education and sought to reach the masses4 ,men of influence1 both white and colored1 in the various localities1 were invited to make addresses4 ,good music was provided when it was possible4 ,one speaker called it an educational revival4 ,this is what we sought to make it4 ,this is what ,i think it was4 ,as you may suppose1 there were many obstacles in the way of this good work--ignorance as to what an institute is1 prejudice of white and colored1 the sickly season of the year and the previous exhaustion of those who gave instruction4 ,these were men who1 in ordinary circumstances1 should have been resting after the toils of the last school year in preparation for those of the year to come4 ,all sorts of misconception must be met4 ,frequently the lecturers arrived at the place1 and found almost no one there4 ,yet by singing and speaking and work generally1 success would come at last1 but with an immense outlay of effort4 ,in other cases the house would be packed with people1 but scarcely a teacher there4 ,they came on horseback and muleback and in wagons and on foot1 bringing their children and dinners with them1 to stay all day4 ,the infants were passed from one to another as nurses grew tired1 or were quietly palleted on the floor or toddled about among the feet of the people4 ,what should be done with an institute like that8 ,turn the people away8 ,by no means4 ,the teachers present were taught how to teach by seeing these people taught the alphabet1 and how to count and the like4 ,one thing never failed--rote singing4 ,oh1 what a wealth of music in voice and ear lies in this people6 ,and it was a study for an artist to see those earnest dark faces1 with their great1 dreamy eyes1 as they peered in at the portals of the temple of knowledge so long closed against them1 and just got a glimpse of the glory beyond1 and knew1 if they themselves could not enter1 their children might4 ,many a parent vowed then that his child should go to ,fisk ,university or ,central ,tennessee ,college1 or the ,baptist ,institute1 as the crowded halls of these institutions1 filled almost to bursting1 now testify4 ,i think that some of these strange1 nondescript institutes were1 perhaps1 our best4 ,one case of zeal ,i may not omit4 ,a man came seventeen miles across the country1 staid the first day1 and at the close of the night session1 about eleven o'clock1 started for home1 woke up his friends and neighbors1 and was back with them by nine the next morning4 ,and1 oh1 the hand-shakings1 and the ,god-bless-yous6 ,who would not be willing to re-enlist in so good a work8 ,but it was hard work4 ,night sessions could not begin till nine1 or later1 as the people could not be got together sooner1 and so we were up till eleven or twelve4 ,add to this the thermometer in the nineties and up to a hundred1 small rooms1 impure air and many other things1 and no wonder if nearly every one of the workers suffered4 ,as to actual expenses for travel1 c41 we expect to get them from the ,peabody ,fund4 ,they were only between two and three hundred dollars4 ,we were1 for the most part1 kept free of expense1 sometimes at hotels and sometimes in families1 white or colored4 ,this we left for the colored people of the place to decide4 ,they generally thought it best for the cause that we stop with white people4 ,we made some friends in that way whom it is pleasant to have4 ,we let politics alone1 but kept ourselves to education2 still1 being ,christian educators1 we often preached ,jesus4 ,in one case a revival meeting was resumed each day at the close of the institute4 ,i have written thus minutely1 thinking that our experience may lead ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 workers to go and do likewise in other ,states4 ,great masses of our school teachers can never come to us4 ,we must go to them4 ,but1 dear ,secretary1 do not work us so hard in our schools that there will be nothing of us left for this or any other of the many in putting down injustice1 outrage and wrong1 by the arm of the law4 ,but all this without making a point of caring for the negro in distinction from any other man2 for the best way of caring for the negro is to cease to know him as a negro1 and to treat him always and only as a man4 ,above all1 should the government refrain from legislating upon social customs1 instincts and prejudices4 ,a legal injustice can be done away by law2 a moral wrong1 in the form of overt action1 can be dealt with by law2 but a taste1 a sentiment1 a feeling1 an instinct1 a prejudice--these pass the bounds of all legislation2 and the attempt to rectify or regulate these by law serves only to irritate opposition4 ,at these points human nature has much in common with the porcupine4 8#b4 ,the black race should be taught that they are to depend upon themselves4 ,having freedom1 schools1 the rights of citizens guaranteed by law1 and the inducement to self-culture presented by opportunities of political action1 they should be made to feel that their future is in their own hands2 that1 if they would rise to a position of respect and of responsibility as men1 they must show themselves to be men4 ,there is no other way for any race4 ,if they cannot do this1 they must go under4 ,if they will not do this1 they ought to go under4 ,but no one who knows the negro race in ,america can doubt1 that with time on their side1 and patience and justice toward them on the part of others1 they will rise to the full measure of their opportunities1 and1 with their capacity for work1 their docility1 their kindliness1 their adaptivity1 their mirthfulness1 their religious faith1 will form as good a part as any in the social system of the future4 ,time1 patience1 justice1 will cause the friction of races to disappear nor the peculiar regard and effort of philanthropists1 will1 of themselves1 avail to procure the abolition of caste-feeling1 and the elevation of the colored people to an entire equality with the everybody welcomes it1 and looks upon it with regard4 ,will the result not be analogous1 when the colored man shall be seen to have an intrinsic value equal to that of the white man8 ,when one shall no longer associate with him the ideas of bondage1 pauperism1 and barbarism1 but those of freedom1 prosperity1 intelligence1 and culture2 when he shall not only carry in his person the stamp of ,american citizenship1 but shall come out from a university training a scholar and a gentleman1 like a glittering coin from the die8 99 99 99 99 99 ,every case which is at all parallel1 confirms the validity of our reasoning4 ,the classical scholar will1 perhaps1 remember that ,cicero1 in writing to one of his friends1 advises him1 when he has occasion to purchase a slave1 not to buy one of those stupid ,britons4 ,doubtless1 after the ,roman wars in ,britain1 thousands of captives had been sent to ,italy and exposed for sale1 according to ancient custom2 and those who bought them had learned that they were intellectually inferior to slaves obtained from other sources4 ,why does a ,briton no longer bear such a reputation8 ,because generations of favorable influences have brought him out of the barbaric condition in which he then was1 and have educated him into the representative of civilization4 99 99 99 99 99 ,there can be no reasonable doubt that educational forces1 rightly brought to bear upon the colored people1 will in time work a change in the matter of prejudice2 which is only partially an incident of difference of feature and complexion1 and is principally a manifestation of caste-pride4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the only certain corrective for this evil is general and special education1 which shall raise the average intelligence of the masses1 so as to make them more capable and independent in their judgments of men and measures1 and which shall also provide appropriate leaders1 worthy of their confidence1 from among themselves4 ,these leaders must be such as naturally come to the front in organized and cultivated society--the men in all professions and pursuits who to native talent add superior education4 ,there must be a speedy addition of cultivated mind to the colored population if it is to be saved from follies which will be fatal4 ,that grade of mind must operate not only directly and purposely through public addresses and by the press1 but in all those quiet1 incidental1 and unconscious ways of daily and hourly intercourse1 which are equally1 or even more1 effective4 ,hence we must have colored lawyers1 physicians1 editors1 authors1 clergymen1 believe that it is defensible4 ,yet it was not so bad as to the spirit that prompted it1 nor so bad in itself as to our ,eastern friends it will naturally seem to be4 ,the mistake was in meddling with a question on which we could scarcely speak at all without being misunderstood4 ,the resolutions adopted were three3 the first1 in emphatic terms1 rebuked lawlessness and riot2 the second1 in terms equally emphatic1 endorsed the missionary work among the ,chinese2 the third set forth the perils attending ,chinese immigration1 and urged some modification of the ,burlingame treaty and the adoption of any other just measures which may restrict this immigration4 ,the fault and the danger is1 not so much in what was really said1 as in what will naturally and easily be inferred4 ,for the first two resolutions will be taken as practically meaningless2--designed simply to smooth the way for the last3 while the last will be interpreted as a surrender on the part of ,christian people to the hoodlum element2 a cowardly backsliding of ,congregationalists in ,california from the position as up-holders of the liberties and rights of men1 which our churches here and elsewhere held so bravely in the years gone by4 ,the following extracts from a paragraph in the ,pacific1 truthfully represents1 as ,i believe1 the real sentiments of the ,association3 8,christians in all parts of our land have long felt that1 if any #8just' method could be found of restricting immigration1 whether ,european or ,mongolian1 our country's future would be less full of peril4 ,but they have not felt that1 for this purpose1 it could be safe to violate the inalienable rights of men1 or contradict those truths which our forefathers declared to be self-evident1 and which constitute the very vitals of our body politic4 ,and in this view1 as we humbly believe1 our ,general ,association would be found in unanimous accord with ,christian people elsewhere in our land40 ,,the ,,work4 ,the story of hindrance from ,one is the artificial method that builds up walls of defence on the outside4 ,the other is the vital and ,divine method that develops inward power enough to ensure safety4 ,god braces the oak against the storms1 not by outward props1 but by growth of inward strength4 ,he gives a man successful life1 not by providing a nurse to carry and feed him half a century1 but by teaching him the art of self-development1 which makes him capable and masterly4 ,in the great problem of ,southern reconstruction1 which is so slowly being solved1 two parties feel themselves in danger4 ,the colored man finds himself at an immense disadvantage amid the prejudices1 the ambitions1 the wider experience1 the superior knowledge and skill of the whites4 ,the old yoke is removed1 but his new life is oppressed with a thousand petty exactions1 which the strong are always able to make upon the weak4 ,with the ballot thrust into his hands1 he hardly knows how to use it wisely1 and suspects that it may be snatched from him again4 ,now this outward guardianship of law and force has been needed2 just as the transplanted flower needs special shelter and the upholding aid of the stick to which it is tied1 until its vital power can build it into independent strength4 ,it is still necessary1 to a certain degree1 though ,god's providence is fast showing us that law and force can do but a transient work for the race1 and must soon be superseded by something better2 and that something better is the development of the colored man himself into wisdom1 and capability1 and moral power4 ,the only permanent safety for the blacks is in their intellectual and religious education4 ,a weak race1 helpless in its ignorance and corrupted by immorality1 will always be kept down4 ,the ambitious and intense desires of those who are wiser and stronger will take advantage of its weakness1 and will crowd it to the wall4 ,no legislation can prevent the working of this natural law in the struggle for prosperity4 ,but a strong race1 with vigorous1 well-disciplined minds1 balanced with virtue1 will always hold its own in the world4 ,cobden used to say that he must see a ,turkish ship1 wholly built1 equipt and manned by ,turks1 sailing from a ,turkish port1 and freighted with genuine products of ,turkish manufactures2 and then1 and not till then1 would he believe in ,palmerston's dream of ,turkish regeneration4 ,so when the colored man shows by his deeds that he is able to do all that a white man can do1 he will hold his footing of equality secure4 ,the race is to be tested by results4 ,the political safety and social elevation of the negro race depend on the resolution1 patience and enterprise with which it takes up this work of self-development4 ,and the only way the friends of the black man can permanently protect him1 is to help him gain this inward power4 ,the primer and the ,testament1 well used1 will be a better paladium than ,congressional enactments4 ,the grammar schools and colleges1 the industrial and theological schools1 and the churches1 where a more reasonable and sober religion may be taught them1 will do more to secure their rights as freemen than a standing army can do4 ,the other party1 looking out for 8rocks ahead10 is the nation itself4 ,victorious in the struggle for its very existence1 it has been ever since in constant perplexity as to the way of readjustment which would make its future safe4 ,for a dozen years the ,southern question has been one of commanding interest and momentous importance4 ,the wisdom of our statesmen has been taxed to the utmost to avert calamities continually impending4 ,but although time1 and the steady purpose of the ,north to have equal rights for all recognized and enforced everywhere1 and the new policy of pacification1 have done much to change the perilous condition of things1 and bring quiet1 the danger is by no means gone4 ,it has changed its complexion1 but it lurks there still4 ,the dense ignorance1 the wide spread immorality1 the pride of blood1 the antagonism of races1 the prevalence of mischievous notions about capital and labor1 the indolence and 8shiftlessness0 of great numbers of the working class1 the ambitions that will seize and manipulate these diverse elements with shrewdness and trained skill1 still exist all over the great ,south1 and are likely to make it a turbulent caldron of contentious elements for years to come4 ,race conflicts and class feuds are likely to arise1 and sectional hatreds are ready to break out again1 with new danger to the whole country4 ,how can the nation protect itself against such dangers8 ,only by this method of self-development4 ,the ,south must become homogeneous in itself1 and harmonious with the ,north by the spread of intelligence and right principles4 ,education and a reasonable religion will bring all up to a higher level1 break down walls of difference1 give broader and better ideas4 ,they would so change the whole structure of ,southern society1 and unify its various elements1 that the causes of dissension that now exist would exist no longer4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association1 then1 is giving to the colored race its best and only permanent protection4 ,it helps the black man to develop his inward power1 so that his defence shall be in himself4 ,and its work is the nation's safeguard1 for by promoting intelligence1 integrity and moral power throughout the ,south1 it increases the elements that alone make a ,republic safe4 ,every motive of philanthropy and patriotism urges us to push forward its work more earnestly4 ,,madison1 ,,wis4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,educability ,,of ,,the ,,blacks4 ,,by ,a ,,virginia ,,county ,,school ,,superintendent4 ,the great mistake most people make1 in regard to the education of the negro1 is that too much is expected in a short time4 ,education in its broad sense is by no means confined to the study of text-books1 however well these may be learned4 ,it takes a generation to correct evil tendencies and predilections1 and the fruits of a systematic course of instruction do not appear at once4 ,it takes time to do this2 and not only is this true of the negro race1 but of all other races as well4 ,the entire history of our foreign missionary efforts goes to prove this4 ,it would be folly to argue that no effort should be made to enlighten and ,christianize the heathen1 because the fruits were not apparent in a few years4 ,this is just the case with the negroes among us4 ,although they have been in contact 7in a certain sense7 with the white race for a considerable period1 yet no systematic or general effort has been made for instructing their minds or educating them in morals4 ,having for the past six or eight years had abundant opportunity to compare the relative advantages of our system of public education on the white and colored races1 ,i am free to say that1 considering the advantages of the former over the latter1 ,i am as much encouraged to go on with the effort to instruct the blacks as the whites4 ,it is true that where intellect is concerned1 the white greatly excels1 but it is not so with regard to memory4 ,the colored pupil memorizes as rapidly as the white1 but lacks the faculty of applying the things learned to everyday life2 and ,i am of opinion that this will remain so for a considerable time--till habits of thought and individuality of ideas are educated4 ,a great deal depends upon home influences2 and here the colored pupil is decidedly at a disadvantage1 and must remain so till home influence is changed to a great extent4 ,these are general rules1 to which there are noticeable and valuable exceptions4 ,take1 for instance1 the graduates of ,hampton ,normal ,school1 and they make not only better men and women in a general sense1 but better for every special calling in after-life4 ,this1 however1 is due in a great degree to the constant drill1 the daily systematic exercises1 the thoroughly qualified instructors1 and to their separation for the time from associations with the vulgar4 ,it is gravely contended by some1 whose opinions are worth a good deal1 that the negro is below the white man because of deficiency of cerebral matter1 and that an examination of the brain will demonstrate this average deficiency by weight or cubic inches4 ,i do not know whether this is true or not1 but this ,i have observed1 and have had abundant evidence of1 that the average colored pupil will1 and does1 keep pace in learning with the average white1 if the white associations are the same as the colored1 i4e41 if the parents and kinsfolk or acquaintances of the white are as ignorant and ill-bred as the black4 ,all things being equal1 the black will outstrip the white in acquiring knowledge and applying it4 ,i have noticed a greater facility for rising above caste in the colored youth than in the white4 ,r4 ,w4 ,p4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,campaign ,,in ,,connecticut4 ,,dist4 think1 were clearly presented and discussed2 though1 judging from a report in one of the ,monday papers1 things were rather mixed2 for example1 one of us was represented as saying that 8the colored people are going down to eternity1 and if nothing is done by the people in the ,north they will drag the white people with them0--a very alarming statement surely1 and well calculated to fire the popular heart1 but ,i cannot find that either of my companions acknowledges its authorship1 and ,i don't quite like to assume it myself4 ,the reporter must have been experimenting with a telephone4 ,on ,monday1 the ministers very kindly accorded us a hearing4 ,we were indulging the hope that at last we had entered upon the favorable time for our meetings4 ,new ,haven had furnished us something of a field day1 and strong desire1 stimulated by encouragement1 was shooting out into confidence2 but that 8one swallow does not make a summer0--a trite old adage we are in danger of forgetting just when we should remember it1 was forcefully brought to our minds as we went to ,new ,milford4 ,the storm king came out in full force1 with wind and rain1 to give us welcome1 and right pitilessly did he continue to rage all the night long4 ,we hastily took back all we had thought and said about ,danbury4 ,there we had merely a distant suggestion of ,noah's ,deluge--here we had an advance section of the genuine thing2 yet so thoroughly had ,rev4 ,mr4 ,bonar advertised our coming1 and so strongly urged his people to attend1 that we had a goodly number out to hear us4 ,we struck ,waterbury on election day2 still the union of the two churches1 under the lead of ,rev4 ,messrs4 ,beckwith and ,anderson1 furnished us with a fine congregation and a profitable meeting4 ,these brethren are both in special sympathy with the work of our ,association4 ,at ,norfolk1 elevated thirteen hundred and sixty feet above the level of the sea1 we encountered the opposition of a minstrel troupe1 which paraded the town with a brass band just about the time our meeting was to commence4 ,it affected our audience very little1 however1 as the church-going people in that region are not given to such things4 ,a well filled house greeted us1 and with the aid of ,pastor ,gleason1 whose earnest words gave us welcome and introduction1 we had what appeared to be a very interesting meeting4 ,winsted favored us with another rainy reception1 but a fair audience1 while a well trained choir was present1 which1 by the excellent rendering of an introductory anthem1 as one of the newspapers facetiously put it1 8gave tone to the meeting40 ,new ,britain was the next place1 and may be noted as the turning point in the adverse circumstances attending the ,connecticut campaign4 ,a pleasant evening and a large audience here greeted us1 and an interest evoked that was decidedly manifest4 ,from this time onward until the last day1 which proved rainy1 we had good weather1 and1 with only one or at most two exceptions1 well-attended meetings4 ,what has been said regarding the co-operation we received from the ministers in the preceding places is true of all4 ,everywhere the ministers gave us cordial ,first and ,second ,churches1 ,rev4 ,messrs4 ,hall and ,hungerford entering heartily into it4 ,a good audience braved the storm1 and gave interested attention to our message4 ,we contemplate a short campaign in ,massachusetts during the month of ,december1 of which ,i may give some account in the future4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,dear ,s4 ,s4 ,,friends3 ,the other day ,i heard one of our teachers say1 8,i'd rather anybody would be really blunt1 if he means what he says1 than ever so fine1 if ,i cannot depend upon him40 ,yesterday1 ,i heard another teacher say1 8,mrs4 ,j4 is not deceitful enough to be decent40 ,now ,i know ,i ought not to write you a sermon1 but these two sayings1 like texts1 will stay in my mind when ,i think of you4 ,a good many of you have been to school enough to study ,u4 ,s4 history1 and you remember about the stern old ,puritan who settled in ,new ,england and the ,cavalier who settled in the ,south4 ,well1 we ,puritan ,yankees1 many of whom have been taught to feel that it is a sin even to greet an acquaintance with 8,i'm glad to see you10 when for some reason we cannot be glad at heart1 are very much annoyed when we come ,south1 by being so often deceived1 because we cannot tell how much allowance to make for expressions which were intended only to please4 ,for instance1 ,i explain a difficult problem1 and ask if it is understood4 8,yes1 ma'am10 is the prompt reply4 ,surprised1 as well as delighted1 at the brightness of my pupil1 ,i ask1 8,are you sure you understand perfectly80 8,yes1 ma'am10 with as much assurance as before4 ,the next day ,i assign the problem to the confident pupil1 and he knows nothing about it4 ,or1 a pupil comes to me for assistance in a problem4 ,i give it1 and he replies3 8,i started to do it that way1 but thought it was wrong40 ,of course1 such a strange thing as thinking we were wrong when we were right1 could not happen very often4 ,but when the same words--8,i started to do it that way1 but thought it was wrong10 and other expressions equally suspicious1 are often repeated1 with what weight they come to fall upon our hearts1 almost burying our hope and courage as we see how hard it is to be simply true4 ,so you see there was some reason for my first friend's saying she preferred honesty to refinement4 ,now1 perhaps some frank1 brave little boy or girl is thinking--,i'm not deceitful2 ,i always say what ,i think1 whether people like it or not4 ,my dear little friend1 do not be too proud of that honest tongue6 ,does not the same ,bible that teaches us to be truthful1 also say1 8,be courteous10 and 8,be ye kind60 ,need ,i be either a severe ,puritan or an insincere ,cavalier8 ,you see we old people cannot help feeling that somehow these ,puritans and ,cavaliers helped to make people believe that one must either be blunt and honest or refined and deceitful4 ,it is a great pity that we should ever think beautiful1 lovely ,truth1 must always speak cold or cutting words4 ,now we ought not to fret because we cannot make everything straight in this crooked world1 but should we not be a great deal happier if every man and woman and boy and girl who speaks the truth1 would always speak it kindly and courteously2 and if every one who is truly polite would always be thoroughly truthful8 ,when that time comes1 no one will ever think of making such a strange remark as my second friend did yesterday--8,she is not deceitful enough to be decent40 ,,mrs4 ,t4 ,n4 ,,chase4 ,,atlanta1 ,,ga4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,maine1 of even more consequence1 a simple and cordial faith in the ,gospel narratives1 which1 while enabling him to profit by the best results of modern criticism1 shields him from the temptation to tone down or dilute the supernatural and divine features of the character and ministry of ,christ4 8,the work is noteworthy for certain special merits1 when compared with any previous treatment of the same theme4 ,its style is fresh1 animated and vigorous4 ,its arrangement of the subject-matter is such as to present the parts of that wonderful life of the ,son of ,god in their due co-ordination and interdependence1 thereby producing on the reader's mind the impression of a continuous1 organic1 divinely-ordered whole from the beginning to the end4 8,dr4 ,geikie's #8,life and ,words of ,christ'
