or encyclopdia of any note1 give full information both as to the early use1 construction1 and form of bells1 it is needless to add another word upon such topics in such a production as this2 and when1 as is the case at the present time1 so many good books are to be so easily obtained1 on ,change ,ringing and ,bells1 with examples of the various methods or interchanging of positions1 by fixed rules or courses1 they would at first sight and thought appear to be subjects1 which have been literally exhausted1 and in which no room remains for further attempts at description in letter-press4 ,however1 such is not the fact1 for the young beginner now1 especially if no experienced guide can be secured1 to give advice in person1 is in the position of a schoolboy who is called upon to work out a calculation in decimals1 before he clearly understands the rule or the method of pointing1 unless he has the good fortune to find and secure a copy of 8,wigram's ,change ,ringing ,disentangled10 or1 8,troyte's ,change ,ringing to ,six ,bell ,work10 which with some amount of study1 he may in time get on and become proficient4 ,the want of something more1 as the first steps to ringing1 has been felt and acknowledged by many persons at many times2 and to supply this want is all that is now attempted--not in any way to disparage the well-known works of others more skilled in the art of ringing1 but to lead upwards and onwards to those works by short and easy words and lessons1 is the wish of the ,author in the following pages4 ,illustration ,illustration ,,note ,,to ,,the ,,second ,,edition4 ,the appreciation and successful issue of the first edition of this work is duly acknowledged by the ,author1 as well as the many expressions of approval from persons at home and in foreign parts4 ,it is a source of satisfaction and gratification to know that the attempt has produced a large amount of interest1 and has also been the means of producing some ringers in several of our ,colonies1 as well as working up a desire for and supply of other productions1 such as the second edition of 8,banister's ,change ,ringing10 ,wigram's new1 better1 and enlarged 8,change ,ringing ,disentangled10 and 8,snowdon's ,rope ,sight10 which are worthy of a place in every bell student's and every ringer's library4 ,the continued demand for the 8,first ,steps0 has prompted this second edition1 which is somewhat altered and extended1 the desire of the ,author being to make all things as plain and as easy as possible4 ,illustration ,illustration ,illustration 8,sweet bells ring for ever1 ',tis your old familiar strain ,that awakes the past again40 ,,bell ,,ringing ,illustration ,,on ,,church ,,bells4 ,england is frequently said to be known as the ,ringing ,isle1 from the fact that wherever the stranger or foreigner turns1 or stays1 in this land1 he is sure to meet with the well tuned bells1 and well timed changes1 pealing forth from our venerable church towers and steeples2 whilst on the ,continent of ,europe1 and in other parts of the world1 the ear is accustomed only to the hodgepodge1 jangle or clatter of several bells1 either in or out of tune1 no matter which1 all striking as fast as possible1 in utter disorder1 seemingly in a race for the greatest number of blows per minute1 for each or any one in particular4 ,but whilst in ,england the townsman1 citizen1 or villager is accustomed to the order1 and the sweet music from the steeple bells1 it is strange to find that so few really care to understand by what means1 method1 or performance such results are produced4 ,happily1 however1 much has been done within the last fifty years to emulate enquiry1 and foster interest in such matters by many gentlemen1 who have spent a large share of their spare time to effect this purpose1 both by essays1 books1 lectures1 advice1 and practice--foremost amongst them all being the venerable ,rev4 ,h4 ,t4 ,ellacombe1 of ,clyst ,st4 ,george1 ,devon1 who from quite a young man has entered deeply and fully into all matters of interest relative to ,church ,bells and ,ringing1 and who now supervises that bell-ringing page in the interesting weekly paper called ,church ,bells1 where from time to time much is given which is interesting to all who may wish to become ringers in practice or performance1 with good and reliable information as the groundwork upon which they desire to ultimately place their edifice of knowledge of the subject in question4 ,illustration3 7,illustration of a ,ring of ,eight ,bells and ,ringers in the act of starting to set the ,bells from rest47 ,but not only is there a general lack of knowledge upon ringing church bells on the part of the majority1 even in this bell ringing isle--it can well be added that1 as to change ringing1 the really scientific1 very useful1 and interesting part of ringing is 8dog ,latin0 or 8double ,dutch0 to ninety-nine persons out of every hundred1 or even more1 the general impression being that it is all very easy1 and only to pull--that anyone can do all that is to be done in a very short time2 whereas it is in every particular an interesting study1 proficiency gained by practice1 thought1 care1 and application alone--a science as true1 as useful1 and as healthy to mind and body1 as is possible to be found1 practised1 or studied4 ,to ring1 and to ring changes1 on either church or musical hand bells1 are three very different subjects4 ,in order to ring changes1 however1 it is absolutely necessary to have a good knowledge of ringing1 or the means adopted to make the bells sound in their proper time and place1 whether it be in the church tower1 on the large swinging bells with ropes1 or in the parlour or drawing-room1 upon the musical bells1 held in the hand or hands4 ,but not to deal with too many subjects together1 and to avoid confusion1 it is well to start with ,illustration ,illustration ,,hints ,,on ,,church ,,bells ,,and ,,fittings4 ,at all times when it may be desired to produce a good performer upon any musical instrument1 it is well that he should understand the instrument itself2 for just as the driver who understands his steam engine thoroughly in its parts and details1 is the man who can work it best1 so is it with the ringer with his bell in the steeple or tower4 ,it is not at all difficult to picture the scene1 surroundings1 and thoughts of an intended ringer1 upon his first visit to the bell-tower1 or ringing chamber1 unless it be as has been the experience of many1 as well as that of the writer1 to learn to pull the rope and catch the sally when a boy at school on the large school-bell1 or that at the parish church4 ,and even then1 if not in the midst of an octave of ropes1 the dancing of the rope upon which he had to start or practice was1 at first sight1 perplexing2 graceful1 however1 if handled well1 but yet a mystery4 ,illustration3 7,illustration of a ,ring of ,eight ,bells as they would appear in the ,frame or ,cage in the ,belfry47 ,presuming that the reader desires to become a ringer1 to understand his instrument1 and for this purpose has ascended the tower--has passed the ringing room with a glance1 and has made up his mind to know the why and wherefore of the bells and fittings1 so that if anything goes wrong in the practice or performance he may be able to set it right if possible or remedy any defect--he will go at once to the bell cage1 and learn 7as was the writer's first lesson7 the names of the parts and fittings of the bell1 where such an arrangement will be seen as is shown by the following illustration1 to which is added the names of each part4 ,everyone may know what a church bell is like in form1 and the purpose for which it is founded2 but not so can it be said of its various parts and appurtenances4 ,in order to help the reader in this direction1 the following sketch will answer for reference4 ,with the shadow it is easy to realize or imagine the fact1 and to conceive that we are facing the bells in the tower1 where each is fitted1 as the sketch shows1 separately1 and by the numbers and references the names of the parts can be easily learnt4 ,illustration3 7,illustration of a ,bell with detached frame or sections for reference to parts47 ,in giving a description of the bell and its fittings1 for all ordinary purposes1 it is not necessary to go into details as to the best proportion or shape1 for that is so well understood by founders of any note or excellence1 and as it is all so well treated in other writings1 here it would be superfluous4 ,the following1 however1 will always be found useful for reference3-- ,no4 #a represents that part called the ,head of the bell1 which is varied in form under various circumstances1 sometimes being what is known by the name of button or mushroom head1 at others by canon head1 or as is shown4 ,the most frequently used are the crown head or with canons4 ,no4 #b4 ,the shoulder4 ,no4 #c4 ,the waist4 ,no4 #d4 ,the sound bow4 ,no4 #e4 ,the lip4 ,no4 #f4 ,the clapper4 ,no4 #g4 ,the stock 7a wood beam to which the bell is hung74 ,no4 #h4 ,the gudgeons or axles 7of wrought iron turned1 upon which the bell swings74 ,no4 #i4 ,the bearings 7of gun metal1 in which gudgeons work74 ,no4 #aj4 ,the wheel 7of wood1 which acts as a lever to set the bell in motion74 ,no4 #aa4 ,the shrouding 7the guard of the wheel to keep the rope in its place on the sole74 ,no4 #ab4 ,the slider 7a piece of wood working on a centre to support the stay74 ,no4 #ac4 ,the stay 7a piece of wood attached to the stock to support bell when set74 ,no4 #ad4 ,the rope4 ,no4 #ae4 ,the pulley or rope guide4 ,no4 #af4 ,the wheel stay 7an iron rod or rods fastened between the stock and wheel1 to support or steady the wheel1 not shown74 ,no4 #ag4 ,the sally 7not shown1 but a soft tufting near the bottom end of the rope4 ,see cut of ,bells at ,hand ,stroke1 page #ae74 ,the particular name of each part will also be found to be described very fully in 8,banister's ,change ,ringing10 and in the ,rev4 ,h4 ,t4 ,ellacombe's 8,practical ,remarks on ,belfries and ,ringers10 which should be perused on this subject4 ,now having learnt this lesson1 the next would be that which was taught by the older bell boys to the writer at school1 viz41 to grease the bearings2 to take up or let out the rope1 as occasion might require1 for a taller or shorter person1 taking notice of how it is1 or should be fastened to the wheel1 and passed through the pulley2 then look to the slider and stay1 to see if sound and in order1 so to leave all tight and trim and ready for ringing1 and then1 as one of the tutors in the art was in the ringing room ringing1 the scholar was so placed in the belfry as to see1 and have it explained to him by another companion1 how that the slider and stay were needed to set the bell at the hand or back strokes2 how the rope danced1 and needed catching below at the sally1 to prevent the breakage of either the slider or stay1 if not so caught4 ,by this at once understanding1 by optical demonstration and friendly counsel1 the object and use of all that pertains to the bell1 as well as the reason for setting it up4 ,with this fairly in the mind1 it will be well at once to turn the attention to ringing1 which1 perhaps1 will explain in part as we proceed1 the use of the former remarks as to the application of the parts or fittings sufficiently1 for cases where a tutor cannot be found in person4 ,illustration ,illustration 8,hark the bonny ,christchurch bells3 ,one1 two1 three1 four1 five1 six4 ,they sound ,so mighty great1 ,so wondrous sweet1 ,so merrily40 ,,the ,,practice ,,of ,,ringing4 ,it may be perplexing when consulting a variety of books1 to determine what are the best plans for a beginner to adopt4 ,and it may or should be known that bell ringing is a dangerous practice for a novice1 should he commence it by himself without instruction1 thought1 or care4 ,in such a case1 he runs the risk of being hung by the neck1 as was the case not long since1 when1 at a certain place in ,essex1 a man pulled the tenor of a ring of bells1 left set for a company of ringers1 without knowledge1 the result being that he was confused1 caught by the rope round the neck1 pulled up and thrown with great force to the floor1 but where fortunately there happened to be some thick cocoa-nut matting1 which broke the fall and so saved him4 ,now1 although it may be dangerous to begin or to practise by oneself1 yet a little help1 such as we should seek in learning to skate or to swim1 or in any other exercise or art1 from an expert1 will overcome and set aside all danger1 as well as the mind at perfect rest on such thoughts4 ,therefore1 as a precaution1 wherever it is practicable and possible1 the advice should be taken to obtain the assistance and counsel of a ringer at starting2 and having secured the good offices and help of the teacher1 the first lesson will be1 as a matter of course1 to see and take notice of the way in which he sets the bell1 by repeated pulls1 and catches at the sally or tufting of the rope1 marking particularly1 as is shown in the illustrations of the ringers in the ringing room1 or that immediately following1 the best plan to hold the rope1 viz41 with the rope near to its bottom or end1 in the left hand permanently1 and the right hand at liberty1 to catch the sally or ease the bell on its slider and stay1 and to pull at the hand or back strokes in their turn4#a #a ,see also ,banister 7on ,change ,ringing7 on this point4 ,illustration3 7,illustration of a ,ring of ,eight ,bells and ,ringers1 with ,bells set at ,hand ,stroke ready to start either for ,round or ,peal ,ringing47 ,,note4--,being ,set means standing mouth upwards4 ,illustration3 7,illustration of a ,bell at rest and best plan to hold the rope47 ,whilst watching1 it will be noticed that after starting to pull the bell from the position of rest1 as is shown in the sketch1 to get the 8bell up10 or 8set the bell10 as it is termed1 that the rope will begin in a very short time to dance1 which is caused by the bell1 and the wheel reversing sides1 for the rope on the wheel1 in swinging2 and then it will be seen how that1 as the bell approaches nearer the set point or balance1 there is much to be gained by catching the sally or tufting1 giving a slight pull as the rope reverses1 until the point be reached1 when the balance or set is obtained1 and the bell is held or caught and eased to the hand stroke1 in the position as is shown by the following sketch 7fig4 #a71 where the stay rests against the slider on the one side1 in which case it will be seen that the rope comes much in the position as when at rest1 and is pulled off the set by the sally2 then1 when pulled1 it will be noticed that the bell will swing to the reverse side1 and set at the position called the back stroke1 being eased to its proper place or point by the hands1 in the position as is shown by the sketch 7fig4 #b71 where the stay rests against the slider on the reverse side1 in which case it will be seen that the rope is all round the wheel1 and the end only is in the hands1 and is so pulled off its set to the hand stroke4 ,,note4--,the sally must be caught in the hands before the stay reaches the slider at hand stroke1 and eased to its position1 and the rope held in check as the bell goes to back stroke1 or the slider or stay may be broken and the bell turn a somersault4 ,illustration3 ,,fig4 #a4 ,,note4--,in some cases the rope is not held in the one hand1 as shewn in the wood-cut1 but is pulled off at hand stroke1 and caught when approaching at back stroke1 and vice versa4 ,it will thus be seen how the rope is held1 and pulled1 and caught4 ,it will also be seen1 by watching1 how easy it is to keep pulling in time1 on either side1 to hand or back strokes1 with any interval1 at pleasure1 and with precision4 ,and at this point it would be well to join the teacher1 standing face to face1 taking the rope in the hand as described1 pulling when he pulls1 catching when he catches1 and easing as he eases1 so as to get the knack without excitement1 without hard labour1 and without bending the knees4 ,illustration3 ,,fig4 #b4 ,both pull and catch easy at first1 with eyes and ears well open1 or as is said3-- 8,the ears open1 ,eyes wide1 ,feet steady1 ,tongue tied40 ,by such means1 and by such practice1 it will very soon result in being able to pull by oneself1 and then remains only the practice1 so as to learn to keep time at both strokes1 to get the bell up1 and to let it down without help3 always remembering that the weight of the body1 thrown on to the rope1 is far more effective and less tiring than using great muscular force1 or bending and twisting the body which causes much needless exertion1 loss of power and breath2 a rule being3-- 8,stand upright1 ,pull down straight1 ,you'll ring right40 ,when this is accomplished1 there need be no delay in proceeding to ring rounds with your friends in company4 ,illustration 8,hark6 the merry bells ring round40 ,,ringing ,,rounds4 ,to ring-in rounds1 it matters little which bell is taken to perform upon1 as each takes its place in proper turn1 whether it be first1 middle1 last1 or any other position1 which will be very well understood if the new ringer has practised1 as he should do1 rounds upon hand bells4 ,musical hand bells are the most handy for the practice of time1 place1 and position1 and should accompany every ring of church bells anywhere and everywhere for this purpose1 so much may be practised upon them in the quiet and comfort of a home fireside4 ,but in ringing rounds on the bells of the church in the tower1 every bell must be set at the start1 and should be brought round to the hand stroke1 as shown in the cut on page #ae4 ,when all the company are ready--whether four1 five1 six1 eight1 or more in number--the leader or conductor will say 8,ready0--0,go10 upon which every one will start off in proper order and time1 looking at the ringer preceding as to when to pull off1 by turning his eyes or head1 not his body1 and keeping the ears open1 so as to be in time and order in striking4 ,the treble 7or highest note7 bell1 in all church bell ringing1 is understood as being ,no4 #a1 whether there be a ring of three1 four1 six1 eight1 ten1 or twelve bells2 and so1 presuming a ring of eight1 the bells will be rung in rounds in the order of #a1 #b1 #c1 #d1 #e1 #f1 #g1 #h1 at the hand stroke2 then #a1 #b1 #c1 #d1 #e1 #f1 #g1 #h1 on the back stroke1 and repeated in the same way or method to any length1 at will or pleasure4 ,should there be only six bells in the ring1 they will be rung to the call of the leader as #a1 #b1 #c1 #d1 #e1 #f1 at the hand stroke2 then #a1 #b1 #c1 #d1 #e1 #f1 at the back stroke1 and so for any number of bells4 ,,note4--,any number of bells from #c to #ab in a tower is called a 8,ring of ,bells40 ,thus it will be seen the usual practice in ringing rounds1 is to ring down the scale1 as it is termed in the art of music2 or1 in other words1 from the highest to the lowest note1 or down to the bell with the deepest tone4 ,there is no reason1 however1 but custom to prevent the reverse order 7or ringing backwards1 as it is put in 8,bonnie ,dundee07 being adopted1 used1 or tried1 either in practice or purpose2#b and to make a change in the following of place or position in ringing1 it is not at all a bad move to reverse the order of custom1 and so ring in the order of #h1 #g1 #f1 #e1 #d1 #c1 #b1 #a1 hand stroke2 #h1 #g1 #f1 #e1 #d1 #c1 #b1 #a1 back stroke2 and after say twelve to twenty rounds resume the first order or exercise down the scale1 viz41 #a1 #b1 #c1 #d1 c4 7of course1 this is quite a matter of taste1 and if not approved can be passed over74 ,then it may be well for all to pull or strike together1 so as to fire a volley1 at both hand and back strokes1 and in such practice the whole company should be as much together as when the captain's call of 8,fire60 is responded to by a company of soldiers1 with their rifles1 shot1 and powder4 #b ,mr4 ,north1 in 8,bells of ,leicester10 which the writer has now before him1 tells us the bells at ,barrow-on-,soar are rung backwards to give notice of fire--a hint for country and colonial friends1 when1 if adopted1 the motto of the seventh bell of ,st4 ,ives would carry a good intimation into practice-- 8,when backward rung we tell of fire3 ,think how the world shall thus expire40 ,now1 so much for ringing and ringing rounds2 much more might be said1 but the writer does not consider it just to repeat that which is so well put in 8,bannister's ,change ,ringing10 8,rope ,sight10 8,wigram's ,change ,ringing ,disentangled10 and in 8,troyte's ,introduction to ,change ,ringing10 and to which at this point he recommends the reader or learner to take in hand and study4 ,when that has been well digested and understood1 then1 and not till then1 the next or following portion can or should be attempted either as for study or practice1 viz43-- ,illustration ,illustration 8,the bells ring out a merry peal1 ,their music on our ear doth steal40 ,,change ,,ringing4 ,ringing the ,changes is a phrase often used by the general public in every-day life1 and especially by some who wish to appear witty or clever1 but to whom1 as a rule1 if a question be put as to its meaning1 or proper application1 it is seen in a moment that such knowledge is either too great or too small for them--in fact1 that they know nothing at all about it4 ,the lack of this special knowledge is easily traced to its origin2 for how many schoolboys ever have a sum or exercise in the rule of permutation8 ,many1 if not most1 boys on leaving their studies and school would1 it is believed 7or as has been tested to some extent71 be found utterly ignorant both of its use or practice4 ,they may have learnt that it is the changing or varying the order of things2 and that to multiply all the given terms or numbers the one into the other the last product will be the number of changes required--as #a1 #b1 #c1 #d1 #e1 #f3-- #a #b ---- #b #c ---- #f #d ---- #bd #e ---- #abj #f ---- #gbj ,,note4--,any changes of a complete number or course through a series of permutations is called a 8,peal40 ,thus #b bells 7they may learn7 produce #b changes1 #cf1 #dbd1 #eabj1 #fgbj1 and so on4 ,they may have had the old tale told1 and the old and often single1 as well as singular1 question put to them in this rule3--,a young scholar1 coming into town for the convenience of a good library1 demands of a gentleman with whom he lodged what his diet would cost for a year1 who told him #aj2 but the scholar1 not being certain what time he should stay1 asked him what he must give him for so long as he should place his family 7consisting of six persons beside himself7 in different positions every day at dinner8 ,the gentleman1 thinking it would not be long1 told him #e1 to which the scholar agreed4 ,what time did the scholar stay with the gentleman8 ,which1 as a matter of simple multiplication1 is very easy to answer--#e1jdj days4 ,and even the other1 and most likely last question1 may have been put1 viz43--,how many changes may be rung upon #ab bells1 and in what time would they be rung once over1 supposing #aj changes may be rung in a minute1 and the year to contain #cfe days #f hours8--,answer3 #dgi1jja1fjj changes in #dg1ijj1afj minutes1 or #ia years #c weeks #e days #f hours4 ,either of these examples may be very easy so far1 but as to the practical part of working them out in any performance in every-day life is quite another matter1 and it is left for the schoolboy to wait or to forget all about both the rule and the figures1 unless he comes to see its workings in the steeple or the fireside1 upon the church or the musical hand bells1 he would1 perhaps1 never see it necessary to prove by practice1 attention1 thought1 and care that which is multiplied and multiplied1 and left on the slate with astonishment1 without any good or lasting effect either upon the mind or the senses4 ,the ,rev4 ,mr4 ,wigram very well shows a supposed case of persons changing positions upon steps1 ascending and descending in method or order1 as an example of permutation4 ,but the positions or places may be made or taken1 and the rule worked out for amusement and practice at the breakfast or dinner table1 where there may be several persons meeting repeatedly4 ,and in this it is not more astonishing than it is amusing to see the zest and interest given and taken by a boy of only eight years of age in its practice1 when once fairly explained and started1 cultivating both memory1 thought1 and interest in a fixed plan until it is accomplished1 by no means an unimportant trait in character 7for how many begin a task with zest1 and falter or never finish1 is abundantly seen74 ,such1 in a higher sense1 is the effect of change ringing on bells1 where1 beyond the changing places at a table1 the sense of hearing and the practice of time or order are added to those of sight and touch4 ,three questions naturally suggest themselves to the student at the very outset of the art of change ringing upon church bells1 viz43-- #ast4 ,how many changes can be rung on various rings of bells of various numbers numbers from #b to #ab8 #bnd4 ,how long would it take to ring them8 ,and #crd4 ,how is it to be done8 ,now the first two of these questions are so well answered at a glance by the tabulated form prepared by ,mr4 ,troyte1 in his work on change ringing1 and by other books1 and are so easily computed by the method of calculation as is shown a few lines back1 and reckoning either #bj1 #bd1 or #bh changes per minute1 as may be deemed most convenient to the performer2 so that all that is left for such a work as this is to answer in a very simple way1 the third question--,how to do it8 ,change ringing on bells1 then1 is to be accomplished just as all other arts or studies1 not by seeking to take the monitor's place at first1 but by taking the lowest place on the lowest form1 and by giving attention to every lesson or hint that can be gathered from others1 commencing as with the alphabet1 and then proceeding to spell or to compose4 ,and for this there can be no better plan than to note upon paper the changes which may be made with from #b to #d bells1 assuming that one1 which may be represented by a cross1 star1 or other mark1 is the bell which the student takes to move1 vary1 or change4 ,whether he takes the position of #a1 #b1 or any other number1 ,no4 #a1 in a ring of church bells1 is always that with the highest note1 and in this way it will be plain1 first1 to presume that there are #b bells1 and the reader takes the second1 upon which there are1 as he knows already as shown1 but two changes2 he will write thus-- ,hand stroke #a 4 --,h4 ,s4 4 #a ,back stroke 4 #a --,b4 ,s4 #a 4 and then1 when in the tower1 try it on the actual bells4 ,on no account1 however1 run out of time1 and jangle or clatter them1 as some are endeavouring purposely to do1 la ,rome1 in the present day4 ,then sit down1 write out and commit to memory the changes on #c bells1 still assuming that ,no4 #b bell is in hand1 thus3-- ,,exercise #b4 ,h4 ,s4 #a 4 4 #c ,h4 ,s4 #c 4 4 #a ,b4 ,s4 #a 4 4 #c ,b4 ,s4 #c 4 #a 4 ,h4 ,s4 4 #a 4 #c ,h4 ,s4 #a 4 #c 4 ,b4 ,s4 4 #c 4 #a ,b4 ,s4 #a 4 4 #c ,this will be seen is easy to write and easy to remember1 as ,mr4 ,troyte shows the method or order to be to always change places at every move1 variation1 or round after starting with the one who struck after you in the previous move4 ,thus ,no4 #a was first followed by ,x1 then #a takes ,x's place1 #a is then followed by #c1 consequently #a immediately changes place with #c and goes to the bottom or behind1 ,x being at that time in the original place of #a1 or at the lead1 she changes in with #c1 and is followed by #a2 ,x now being the changing bell1 takes the place of #a1 and comes to the bottom or behind1 #c being at the lead2 #c then begins to change as the others did1 and so the peal comes round4 ,the moving bells are said in this to be hunting1 which holds good in whichever order the moves are made1 either up or down4 ,then the six changes might be written1 learnt1 and tried in the other form1 thus3-- ,,exercise #c4 ,h4 ,s4 #a 4 4 #c ,h4 ,s4 #c 4 4 #a ,b4 ,s4 #a 4 4 #c ,b4 ,s4 4 #c 4 #a ,h4 ,s4 #a 4 #c 4 ,h4 ,s4 4 #a 4 #c ,b4 ,s4 #c 4 #a 4 ,b4 ,s4 #a 4 4 #c ,this will be seen to be what is referred to1 and known as hunting down and up2 the last bell here takes the position of the one before it1 until it comes to the top or lead1 and then returns to its original position1 striking in after the one who struck next following in the preceding move4 ,now1 this hunting up and down is the basis of all change ringing1 and should be practised in just the same way upon #d1 #e1 #f1 or #h bells before any other method be tried2 in fact it would be well for any young ringers to thoroughly master the method of hunting1 upon either musical hand bells or church bells1 beginning with the #f changes on #c bells1 and become proficient in these before #d be attempted1 and when hunting on #d be mastered1 try #e1 and so on1 progressing to #h in hunting alone4 ,of course1 when the musical hand bells are used1 it will be well to take but one in the right hand and strike either at hand or back stroke1 as would be done upon the larger bells in the belfry in ringing2 the hand stroke on the musical hand bells being up and the back stroke being down4 ,it would be also well to change places from time to time1 not always taking ,no4 #a or ,no4 #b position1 but changing positions and bells with your friends1 at times taking ,no4 #d1 #f1 #h1 or otherwise1 but in the tower take the one or other most suited to the strength of the student4 ,this method of changing or hunting is supposed to be that which was first discovered1 and1 without doubt1 is the easiest for any beginner1 as also it is the safe and sure road to the other methods of changing4 ,our advice is1 go slowly but surely1 and so progress and succeed4 ,such being the case1 and such advice being followed1 in order to introduce another bell for practice1 the easiest plan to adopt is to work out the same changes as has been previously given for three bells1 and to place the fourth bell to strike last in each move1 thus3-- ,,exercise #d4 ,,exercise #e4 #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d #b 4 #a 4 #c 4 #d #a 4 #c 4 #b 4 #d #b 4 #c 4 #a 4 #d #c 4 #a 4 #b 4 #d #c 4 #b 4 #a 4 #d #c 4 #b 4 #a 4 #d #c 4 #a 4 #b 4 #d #b 4 #c 4 #a 4 #d #a 4 #c 4 #b 4 #d #b 4 #a 4 #c 4 #d #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d ,in this it will be very convenient to place the latest or dullest scholar1 if there be one1 to the fourth bell1 who will simply strike in at the close of each move or change of those before him1 and will count the time of his pulling to himself1 as #a4 #b4 #c4 #d--a4 #b4 #c4 #d1 so as to strike his bell in time or order in the fourth place as long as may be mutually agreed upon4 ,then it would be well to try a simple plan for every bell to make a change1 following the rule1 viz41 to strike from the lead or first position after the one which previously followed1 thus3-- ,,exercise #f4 #a at lead #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d #b 4 #a 4 #c 4 #d so #a takes place of #b #b #b 4 #c 4 #a 4 #d #a #c #c 4 #b 4 #d 4 #a #a #d1 and #b at lead of #c #c #c 4 #d 4 #b 4 #a #b #d ,then #a returns to lead1 after #b strokes at behind4 #d 4 #c 4 #a 4 #b so #c takes place of #d and #b of #a #d #d 4 #a 4 #c 4 #b #c #a #a 4 #d 4 #b 4 #c #d #a #a #a 4 #b 4 #d 4 #c #d #b brought round #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d ,and after this being practised and mastered1 the usual method of plain hunting on four bells will come easy1 in which the lead and last bells each begin to change after the first move1 the one up and the other down1 at the hand stroke1 and the two middle bells cross at the back stroke1 thus3-- ,,exercise #g4 #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d #d 4 #c 4 #b 4 #a #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d #c 4 #d 4 #a 4 #b #b 4 #a 4 #d 4 #c #c 4 #a 4 #d 4 #b #b 4 #d 4 #a 4 #c #a 4 #c 4 #b 4 #d #d 4 #b 4 #c 4 #a #a 4 #b 4 #c 4 #d ,then it would be well to confine the attention to #d bell ringing1 or singles1 as it is termed1 in the other and more advanced method known as dodging1 which is a move of positions1 as ,banister says1 in which a bell is made to stop in its hunting course1 return back one place1 and then proceed as before4 ,this should be thoroughly understood and mastered before #e1 #f1 or #h bells be even tried4 ,the number of changes which may be produced-- ,upon #b bells are #b1 and are called ---- #c #f1 ---- #d #bd1 ,singles4 #e #abj1 ,doubles4 #f #gbj1 ,minor4 #g #e1jdj1 ,triples4 #h #dj1cbj1 ,major4 #i #cfb1hhj1 be to those who are disposed to give the time1 the study1 the attention1 and the practice the art deserves4 ,the student1 taking the syllabus1 and proceeding in the following order3-- #a4 ,learn the names and the uses of the parts of the bell and fittings4 #b4 ,learn to handle the rope and to ring1 with clapper tied fast to prevent nuisance4 #c4 ,learn to ring in rounds4 #d4 ,learn to hunt or worked out in the ,books by ,messrs4 ,troyte1 ,hubbard1 ,banister1 and others4 ,with such writings on these1 more intricate and advanced methods1 so well compiled1 so much appreciated1 and so easily obtained1 giving all the technical words1 and names1 in the change ringing art1 showing so plainly the rules for bringing round the peal to its starting position1 through the many variations and changes1 it is needless in such a production as this to say more than to refer the student at once to those ,works1 and to wish him every success4 ,desiring only to lead such onward1 to the further study and practice of this healthy and fascinating art1 with many apologies for humble efforts1 and1 doubtless1 many mistakes1 at the same time craving the forbearance of the masters of the art1 the recondite learning which the author has gathered together to illustrate the history of his subject1 as from the clear directions given for hand-bell ringers1 and the exercises here provided for their use4 ,it appears to us quite worth the consideration of the clergy whether the practice of hand-bell ringing would not do much to keep their corps of church ringers together and provide an antidote to the public-house4 ,we find that a medium set of eight hand-bells1 forming an octave1 can be obtained for from four to five pounds2 and the steps of the art present no considerable difficulty1 even to
