increasing interest in these little bits of the graver's art has greatly encouraged the production of them1 and new ones arise daily4 ,it is desirable1 therefore1 if we are to have book-plates at all1 that they shall be as artistic as may be2 and it is important1 from an art standpoint1 to all those who are about to adopt the use of these marks of ownership that they shall have1 as they may have1 the artistic flavor about them4 ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,library of the ,studio ,club4 ,by ,wm4 ,edgar ,fisher ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,winifred ,knight4 ,by ,wm4 ,edgar ,fisher ,most of our leading designers have hitherto been grouped in the eastern section of our country1 or at least not much further west than ,chicago4 ,some few designs1 it is true1 have been produced in ,california1 but for the most part the book-plates of note have been marked with an eastern geographical origin4 ,in ,william ,edgar ,fisher we have a designer who has strikingly departed from geographical conditions of book-plate designing heretofore prevailing1 and in faraway ,fargo1 ,north ,dakota1 has set up his studio from whence have come designs that are fresh1 original and very pleasing4 ,mr4 ,fisher loves to work in a pictorial field4 ,he makes a plate that tells a story1 and in his best plates there is artfully placed something bookish that harmonizes with the design-form selected2 and1 because of art coherence and harmony in design that go hand in hand1 his plates are more than satisfactory4 ,the general eastern notion in regard to ,north ,dakota is that nothing artistic can come out of the ,state1 but the work done there by ,mr4 ,fisher quickly dispels such an idea4 ,the plates he has drawn are acknowledged as highly meritorious by the best ,american masters of book-plate designing4 ,in all the plates from the hand of this artist that are here grouped1 and which may be regarded as quite typical of him1 there are only two that do not contain a book as a detail somewhere in the finished plate4 ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,maie ,bruce ,douglas4 ,book-plate of ,mary ,n4 ,lewis4 ,by ,wm4 ,edgar ,fisher ,one of the exceptions is the plate of the ,studio ,club that gains infinitely by the omission of a book in the plate as produced4 ,the grouping of the five observers 7symbolic of the members of the ,studio ,club7 around the feminine portrait is most charming1 and to the writer it appears one of the happiest of recent productions in appropriate book-plates4 ,mr4 ,fisher's feminine figures that he introduces into many of his plates are likewise exceedingly effective4 ,this is particularly the case when to the charms of femininity he has added those of symbolism1 as in the case of the plate for ,miss ,winifred ,knight1 in which the graceful female masker appears at the shrine of the idealized god ,pan1 who writes1 it may be something oracular1 in her proffered album4 ,the figure is gracefully posed and the lines of the arms and neck are ,lewis1 ,elizabeth ,langdon1 ,leila ,h4 ,cole and ,elizabeth ,allen there are several diverse methods shown in which convention has been pleasingly utilized4 ,the vine and tree forms that are motifs are very effective1 and in all of these we see suggestions of treatment similar to that which stands out perhaps a little more pronouncedly in the plate of ,miss ,douglas4 ,costume quaintness1 charm of pose1 graceful outline1 the tendency toward lecturn detail and delicacy of touch1 are in each instance here seen to be characteristic of the artist4 ,the plate of ,john ,charles ,gage has in it the atmosphere of the monastery4 ,two friars are busy with a folio manuscript that has been beautifully illuminated4 ,the one reads the lessons for the day from the book of hours4 ,the other has a pleasing bit of gossip that he is telling to his brother friar as he reads1 and the reader hears with eagerness with his ears while he reads without absorption with his eyes4 ,illustration3 cordelier sits absorbedly reading his matins4 ,through the open window of the monkish cell is seen the morning medieval landscape whose charms exercise no influence upon the solitary recluse1 solitary save for the monkey who plays sad havoc with the vellum volume that lies upon the cell floor and the destruction of which the ,franciscan is too absorbed to notice4 ,the monkey as a foil for the ascetic in this plate shows that ,mr4 ,fisher has a strong appreciation of the most delicate humor1 which here crops out most delightfully4 ,the border makes the plate a trifle heavy1 but this can plate of ,stanley ,shepard suggests a derivation from an old print4 ,the caravel rides upon the waves according to the conception of the old-time engravers4 ,the anchor1 the sword fish of the deep sea1 and the sea-stars all suggest the ocean voyager who has deep down in his heart a love of books4 ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,edna ,b4 ,stockhouse4 ,by ,wm4 ,edgar ,fisher ,in contrast with the what makes a book-plate so eminently interesting1 aside from the art work put upon it4 ,books appeal to all sorts and conditions of men1 as the work of ,mr4 ,fisher's here grouped clearly indicates4 ,the plate from the books of ,miss ,edna ,b4 ,stockhouse is a trifle shadowy in motif notwithstanding which there can be no doubt the owner loves books4 ,the face in the book-plate reads4 ,there is also a love of the beautiful in ceramics indicated as an incident in the plate4 ,no wonder the head wears an aureole4 ,the ,bi ,lauda plate is that of a secret society at ,wellsville1 ,n4 ,y41 and we1 book-plate has emerged from the stage of practical utility and become a thing in itself1 so to speak4 ,it has taken its place beside the many articles de vertu which are godsends to the weary of brain and heart1 inasmuch as they become the objects of a passion so delightful in its experience1 as to make us forget the little trials and worries of life that make pessimists of us in this bleak ,aceldama of sorrow4 ,nay1 they may even become the one sun1 shining and irradiating for us all the dark places of our wanderings1 and cheer us with the hopes for newer and finer acquisitions than we already have4 ,when1 however1 we come to a consideration of the artistic book-plate1 we enter upon a new field of enquiry entirely4 ,it indicates that a simple usage of a necessary and harmless convention has developed into a complex expression--an expression not merely of the individual to whom the book belongs1 but also of the artist whose business it is to give pictorial form to the desires and wishes and tastes of his patron4 ,from the crude1 if sufficient1 paste-board stuck on the end-paper1 to the heraldic display1 was1 surely1 no very far cry4 ,in the countries of the ,old ,world1 where pride of ancestry touches the worthy and unworthy alike1 it was to be expected that so valuable an opportunity for flaunting the deeds of derring do of one's forefathers as a sign of one's own distinction1 such as the book-plate offers1 was certainly not to be neglected4 ,so we find that the coats of arms which once served as inspirations1 and which once had a genuine meaning to their owners and retainers1 now do service in the more peaceful realms of ,bookland4 ,and1 assuredly1 there are certain books in a library1 which are more worthily acknowledged after this ancient and martial fashion4 ,we cannot but believe that a ,froissart from the press of ,caxton or ,wynkyn de ,worde1 would be handled with more reverence if one saw on the verso of its front cover a glorious display of the arcana of heraldry1 in all its magnificence of mysterious meaning4 ,this feeling would also be aroused in turning the leaves of1 say1 ,philippe le ,noir's edition of the ,gesta ,romanorum 7#aecb71 or of ,hayton's ,lytell ,cronycle from the shop of ,richard ,pynson1 or of ,mandeville's ,voyages and ,travailles1 issued by ,t4 ,snodham in #afbe1 or of ,pliny's ,historia ,naturalis from the ,venetian press of ,nic4 ,jenson in #adgb1 or of ,rastell's ,pastyme of ,people1 emprynted in ,chepesyde at the ,sygne of the ,mermayd in #aebi4 ,to these and their like a book-plate of heraldic story comes as a fitting and graceful complement4 ,but the average mortal of this work-a-day world and age has not the means wherewith to acquire such treasures of the bibliophile4 ,nor1 perhaps1 has he the necessary pedigree with which to adorn them1 if acquired2 though on this latter consideration1 we suspect that the ,herald's ,college in the purlieus of ,doctors' ,commons1 and the more amenable1 though not less expensive ,tiffany on this side of the ,atlantic1 would1 no doubt1 prove excellent aids to a full satisfaction4 ,but we are not here dealing with the pomp and glorious circumstance of ,heraldry4 ,in dealing with the artistic book-plate1 we are considering a matter which concerns itself not with past stories or past individuals1 but with the present tale and the particular living personage who has the laudable and humble ambition to distinguish his copy of a book from his friend's copy of the same book4 ,a taste in books may be easily whitewashed1 but a taste in a book-plate flares its owner's heart right into the eyes of the demurest damsel or the simplest swain4 ,it may be that our collection is but a series of ,tauchnitz editions carefully garnered on a ,european tour1 or a handful or two of ,bohn's ,library1 accumulated from our more studious days1 or a treatise on golf1 chess1 gardening and photography1 or a history of the state or town in which we live--it matters little what--these are the treasures we most prize1 and we wish to hold them4 ,now1 how best shall the collector mark them as his own8 ,he writes his name on the title-page4 ,ugh6 ,what a vandal's act6 ,the man who could so disfigure a book deserves to have it taken from him1 and his name obliterated4 ,he who could find it in his heart to write on title-pages could surely commit a murder4 ,we'd much rather he turned a leaf down to mark the place where he had left off in his reading2 though to do that is bad enough1 in all conscience4 ,nor does he save his soul by writing on the fly-title1 or even end-paper4 ,moreover1 this will not save his book either4 ,a visiting card can easily be taken out--it looks too formal1 nondescript1 meaningless1 common1 to inspire any respect in a would-be thief4 ,but an artistic book-plate6 ,ah6 that's another thing altogether4 ,an artistic book-plate is the expression in decorative illustration of the proprietor's tastes1 made by an artist who has sympathetically realized the feeling intended4 ,it should objectify one1 and only one1 salient characteristic1 either of temperament1 habit1 disposition1 or pleasure1 of its owner4 ,if it does less1 it is not individual2 if it does more1 it is not satisfying4 ,now each one of us has some characteristic trait that is not common to us all--then let that be the aim of the artist to embody in decorative form4 ,and let that embodiment be simple and direct--the simpler and more direct it is1 the more will it appear2 and the more beautiful it is the more will it soften the kleptomaniacal tendencies of the ghoulish book-hunter4 ,for nothing touches him so nearly to the finer impulses of nature than the contemplation of beauty2 and he would be less than human did he fail to respond4 ,we would even go to the length of giving as an admirable test of the book-plate artist's powers1 the lending of a book 7whose loss would give no qualms7 containing the plate4 ,if it come not back1 there's something the matter with your plate2 or1 you can libel your friend as a beast of low degree1 which suggests a good way of finding out your friend's true character4 ,but then1 there's no limit to the powers of a beautiful book-plate4 ,now there are a great many coy people who don't care to wear their hearts on their sleeves2 these would naturally feel indisposed to post themselves thus before the public eye1 be the book-plate never so beautiful4 ,to these we would say3 ,give us what you prize best--your home1 your wife1 your sweetheart1 your motto 7though that's giving yourself away too71 your baby1 anything that is truly yours4 7,babies are quite propos1 and should be characteristic1 though it does not always follow4 ,some babies have a habit of taking after quite other people47 ,the idea is1 to embody something individual1 something special and particular4 ,if he can afford a large library1 or is a collector of the works of one or two authors1 there's a way out of the difficulty for the coy person1 by having the book-plate represent the characteristic of the author and have his name as an addition4 ,that may be taking a liberty--but authors are accustomed to that2 and1 besides1 you are appreciating them1 and that should exorcise the spirit of an indignant classic from the four walls of your library4 ,have the original of the design framed on the wall2 it may save you a lot of explanation should the spook even get mad4 ,you can always lay the blame on the artist4 ,of course1 this means a book-plate for each author2 but as book-plates are not1 after all1 such very expensive luxuries1 this consideration need be a matter of but small moment4 ,yet another idea is to have an artistic treatment of a representation of your library1 your den4 ,that sounds very inviting and certainly can hurt no one's feelings4 ,if you don't happen to possess a special apartment1 give an apartment such as you would like to possess4 ,or show your favorite chair1 or nook1 or greenwood tree1 or running brook1 or garden plot4 ,there are thousands of ways in which to fashion a book-plate1 and an artistic book-plate1 too4 ,we thus can see what an advance the modern artistic book-plate is on the old style article--so formal1 so characterless1 so inchoate and so amorphous4 ,indeed the artistic book-plate is a genuine inspiration1 or it may be made so4 ,how charming1 or delight-giving1 or valuable1 or intoxicating it is1 depends largely on the artist4 ,but it also depends on the individual who desires it4 ,it should be planned with care and executed with feeling4 ,it should be like no other book-plate in the sense that it possesses some flavor that is private and personal4 ,it should be as much an indication of the owner's taste as is his library--and no man can hide his nature from the friend who has had access to that4 ,there are many things a book-plate should not be--but these may be summed up in the advice--it should not be a mask4 ,you may order your books by the hundredweight from your bookseller1 but that won't stand you in any stead when your friend handles them and turns to you for a criticism1 or an opinion4 ,you may also commission your artist for a book-plate2 but you are in a worse plight if you fail in the more direct explanation you will be required to make to the insistent inquiries as to its meaning or appositeness4 ,no6 ,be it ever so humble1 let it be yours4 ,it may be a poor thing1 but it is your own2 but it may be also a very rich thing1 and your own temerity to open a new field of battle and throw down the gauntlet for strife4 ,the ,eternal ,feminine is a prominent factor in the picture book-plates of the day1 and she is showing some tendencies to appear minus her apparel4 ,question3 is it wise and in good taste8 ,of course1 to start with1 ,i am quite free to admit that good taste is a movable feast and is much influenced by the point of view4 ,your taste is good if it agrees with mine2 otherwise it is bad taste or no taste4 ,at any rate1 there are a few things we can agree upon1 ,i think4 ,for instance1 that there is a wide distinction between the nude and the naked4 ,also1 that the human form divine is most beautiful1 but that to remain most beautiful it must deviate not one jot or tittle from the divine1 for any and frayed strings4 ,abstractly1 a beautiful nude is as beautiful on a book-plate as in a portfolio or in a frame1 and some of the most beautiful book-plates ,i have ever seen have been nudes4 ,nevertheless1 to me the nude seems out of place and in questionable taste on a book-plate2 the simple matter of repetition is enough to condemn it4 ,the partially draped figures by ,r4 ,anning ,bell are chaste and beautiful1 and one never thinks of them other than as clothed2 so they can hardly be considered in this discussion4 ,many of the book-plates by ,henry ,ospovat contain partly draped figures which are always beautifully drawn1 pure and a constant delight4 ,but really1 ,i think it would jar me to meet even an angel--the same one1 mind you--in each of a thousand volumes4 ,emil ,orlak1 in ,austria1 has made some fairly pleasing nudes1 but they lack that purity of conception without which they are common4 ,armand ,rassenfosse1 of ,belgium1 has etched a number of dainty1 faultlessly drawn and really most beautiful nudes1 but many of them have been ruined by the needless addition of shoes and fancy head-dresses4 ,pal de ,mont1 of ,antwerp1 has a plate by ,edmond van ,oppel which he probably thinks a work of art1 but which is surely the height of vulgarity2 while in ,composite ,book-,plates is a design by ,theodore ,simson containing a large figure of a nude woman with her hair done in a pug1 seated in a grove amid dandelions and poppies1 and diligently reading a book4 ,the figure is treated in broad outline1 which is ill adapted to the subject1 and it lacks that refinement without which nothing is beautiful4 ,she is absolutely at variance with her environment1 and the whole is a tour de force quite unforgivable4 ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,robert ,h4 ,smith4 ,by ,h4 ,nelson ,miss ,labouchere1 in her volume on ladies' plates1 shows a rather amusing pair of designs for ,miss ,nellie ,heaton4 ,these plates both bear the legend1 ,gather ye roses while made but one nude that ,i have seen1 that for ,mr4 ,e4 ,h4 ,bierstadt2 the design shows a nude shepherd boy piping to his flock4 ,the plate ,mr4 ,french engraved for ,mr4 ,de ,vinne1 from the design by ,geo4 ,fletcher ,babb1 has nude termini for bearers1 and is elegant and beautiful1 an ideal plate4 ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,john ,jessie ,hoy4 ,by ,h4 ,ospovat ,american artists have essayed the nude but little in book-plate design1 perhaps through wisdom1 perhaps through fear2 but the fact remains that they have thereby avoided the perpetration of at least some crimes4 ,judging by the the great ,michael ,angelo could have filled the want from his own notes1 with very little of either suppression or expansion4 ,it may seem strange to think of this ,titan of art1 the creator of the sweeping ,last ,judgment turning his pencil to the delicate lines1 the imperceptible nuances demanded by a book-plate1 yet it may be repeated1 in his work may be found a myriad of suggestions for these gem-like products4 ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,annah ,m4 ,fellowes4 ,by ,thomas ,tryon ,buonarotti was not1 however1 first and last an architect4 ,painter and sculptor also1 these sides of his artist soul would have been drawn on for the book-plate4 ,therefore the statement that not every architect can design so fanciful and dainty a work as a book-plate becomes a truism patent to everybody4 ,the architect's profession calls for a two-fold nature1 the one side tending toward that of the engineer with its eminently practical and very necessary tables of stress and strain1 its mathematical calculations for loads and disposition of carrying walls1 while the other side leans to a nice discernment of color and proportion4 ,the laying out of vistas and the arrangement of surfaces and lines1 so that the eye is aided in receiving the best impression from all points of view4 ,of this turn of mind is the one who can and does design book-plates4 ,the very practical architect1 if he wishes the glory1 which is doubtful1 has one of his draftsmen make the design and then signs the drawing and gets the glory4 ,it would be amusing if such an one through some luck charm received constant application for such work4 ,his draftsmen would change and his drawings be as dissimilar as the men who drew them4 ,possibly the signature would lead the long-suffering public to think him very versatile4 ,it is not of this class of architect that we write4 ,it is of him who is half painter or sculptor1 and who loves his pen and pencil and delights in the personal expression of his ideals4 ,he finds that his way of seeing things is more to his liking than any way of any other man4 ,he sees the infinite beauty of nature and loves her shifting pictures in the clouds4 ,then too1 he must have the ability to clearly comprehend the half-formed ideas of him whose plate he undertakes to draw4 ,this is not always an easy matter4 ,there are but few in the world who can formulate their ideas1 much less invent a picture without first seeing it4 ,here the architect has1 perhaps1 an advantage over the purely imaginative artist1 since the average man does not ,palms1 ribbon and name plate finish the design4 ,for ,mr4 ,farragut1 the son of our old admiral1 ,mr4 ,tryon has made a very salt water arrangement of arms4 ,the shield is surmounted by a quaint ship and the bearers are dolphins1 which on one side encircle a trident and on the other a sword4 ,the conventional acanthus leaves give body and decoration to the whole4 ,perhaps one of the most distinctively beautiful of ,mr4 ,tryon's designs is the fleur-de-lis for ,mr4 ,marcus4 ,in this the artist has blended most delightfully the natural and the heraldic flower and has produced a gem of which one never tires4 ,for his sister and her children ,mr4 ,tryon has made a light and airy design1 distinctively feminine and graceful4 ,the main feature of the design is an ornate cypher of the letters ,s ,t4 ,on the ribbon below the name is shown4 ,this is changed to the names of ,mrs4 ,stone's three daughters for their individual use4 ,the plate reproduced here is that of one of ,mrs4 ,stone's daughters4 ,the design for ,the ,boys ,club is surmounted by the ,american eagle perched upon the globe1 and the flag of our country is draped over the tablet bearing the lettering4 ,this plate has been reproduced both by photo-process and copper plate4 ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,rachel ,norton ,tryon ,stone4 ,by ,thomas ,tryon ,illustration3 ,book-plate of ,library of the ,boys ,club4 ,by ,thomas ,tryon ,of the three color plates reproduced the first was made for ,mr4 ,a4 ,w4 ,brunner1 and has for piece de resistence a very ingenious monogram set in an oval frame4 ,for bearers there are two graceful palms and the keystone is surmounted by a pile of books and a classic student's lamp4 ,the base of the design is relieved by a pleasing arrangement of acanthus leaves4 ,the plate for ,miss ,cox is a seal-like design1 dignified yet dainty1 and would be entirely in place in all kinds of volumes4 ,the plate for ,mr4 ,steell quite speaks for itself and makes the sportsman feel wildly for the trigger of his gun4 ,the buck and doe silhouetted against the yellow of evening and the reflection in the stream are a delight4 ,three of ,mr4 ,tryon's designs have been engraved by ,mr4 ,e4 ,d4 ,french4 ,the famous ,sovereign plates being two1 and one for ,mr4 ,havemeyer being the third4 ,this plate for ,mr4 ,havemeyer is indicative of the owner's collection of ,washingtoniana1 and is surrounded by several of the well-known portraits of the father of his country1 while at the top is a small view of ,mount ,vernon4 ,the portraits and view are interwoven with foliage and ribbon and form a frame in which ,mr4 ,havemeyer's arms are displayed4 ,the ,sovereign plates1 which were made in #ahie for the library of ,mr4 ,m4 ,c4 ,d4 ,borden's yacht1 are of great richness1 the first or crown design being especially so4 ,this one did not please the owner1 who had a second one made surmounted by an eagle instead of a crown4 ,this is simpler in treatment and not so decorative as the earlier design4 ,these plates were both cut on the copper by ,mr4 ,french who treated them in a very sympathetic manner and brought out in clear relief the ideas of the designer4 ,mr4 ,tryon's production has not been great1 reckoned by the number of plates made1 but as his work is never done hurriedly or slightingly it carries an air of finished dignity and worth that gives it lasting qualities4 ,as he usually has one or two plates in hand to which he adds a few lines and a few thoughts from time to time1 we may still expect pleasant surprises in this miniature art from his
