story of mural painting in ,america dates back just a trifle over half a century2 yet so rapidly do we develop things in this country that today the names of half a hundred men and women who have done distinguished work in this direction come to mind in any review of native accomplishment4 ,however1 the art of decoration is one of the oldest in the history of the world1 examples of which have been handed down from almost prehistoric times4 ,traditions reach us--examples too--from the great civilizations of ,egypt1 ,assyria1 ,greece1 ,rome1 in ,europe2 while on our own continent there remain records of art in the way of wall decorations in ,mexico and ,central ,america1 of beauty1 taste1 and invention1 that baffle all efforts to classify as to their age4 ,says a great art writer1 8,no society1 however rudimentary1 has altogether ignored art40 ,within the last few years prehistoric paintings by men who probably lived on reindeer flesh have been discovered in caves of the ,pyrenees1 paintings of no little artistic merit and surely artistic instinct4 ,with the name of ,john ,la ,farge must begin any account of the history of mural painting in ,america4 ,the name is an honored one in the annals of our art development1 and he has been dead only a few years1 after a long life of devotion to high artistic ideals4 ,it was in #ahfa that he completed a panel for the church of the ,paulist ,fathers1 in ,new ,york4 ,the theme was 8,saint ,paul ,preaching at ,athens40 ,the architects1 however1 rejected the work for reasons that seem never to have been recorded1 and the next year ,la ,farge began a large triptych#a of 8,the ,crucifixion02 though he completed only two of the smaller divisions of the composition4 ,these he kept in his studio for many years1 until they were purchased by the late ,william ,c4 ,whitney4 ,but his work in the meantime had been remarked1 and he received an order for some decorations for a dining room2 while the architect ,h4 ,h4 ,richardson1 in #ahgf1 offered him a commission to take charge of the interior decoration of ,trinity ,church1 ,boston4 ,this work was completed in about four months4 ,la ,farge chose as assistants ,francis ,lathrop1 ,francis ,d4 ,millet1 ,george ,w4 ,maynard1 and ,augustus ,saint-,gaudens the sculptor1 among others4 ,the work was satisfactorily completed1 and remains today one of the great accomplishments in this country4 ,after this ,la ,farge was asked to decorate ,saint ,thomas' ,church in ,new ,york1 which was followed by his decorations for the ,church of the ,incarnation in the same city4 #a ,a picture on three panels side by side4 ,illustration3 ,copyright1 #aijd ,,the ,,edict ,,of ,,toleration1 by ,e4 ,h4 ,blashfield ,this is the central section of a decoration in the two groups1 one of the ascending ,christ amid the clouds1 the other of the disciples with ,mary the ,mother standing on the ground gazing upon the wonder passing beyond their vision4 ,the composition is one of great dignity and deep religious feeling2 the vision of the painter is most distinguished2 while there are both balance and harmony1 and the color scheme is highly decorative and rich4 ,the work was immediately followed by many others1 including a music room for the residence of the late ,whitelaw ,reid1 rooms in the residence of ,cornelius ,vanderbilt1 and many churches2 while later was to come the work for great public buildings1 culminating in the decorations for the ,supreme ,court room of the new capitol at ,st4 ,paul1 ,minnesota1 a colossal undertaking comprising many large panels4 ,la ,farge did not1 however1 confine his activities entirely to mural painting2 for during his long career in art he was identified with work in stained glass1 to which he gave great attention4 ,his achievements in this direction were among the most distinguished that have ever been attained in the history of the world4 ,illustration3 ,,egyptian ,,dance ,by ,william ,de ,l4 ,dodge ,in the ,majestic ,theater at ,boston1 ,massachusetts ,,william ,m4 ,,hunt ,before we come to the group of present workers in mural painting it is necessary that we consider an earlier man1 again one of the pioneers1 the artist ,william ,m4 ,hunt of ,boston1 who in #ahgh obtained the commission to decorate the ,new ,york state capitol at ,albany4 ,the result was a fine series of pictures1 well composed2 but unfortunately they survive only in reproductions1 the originals having been painted directly on the walls4 ,these1 owing to faulty construction1 did not long remain intact1 falling out of plumb1 and they had to be supported by beams until they were finally entirely destroyed4 ,hunt had been a pupil of ,thomas ,couture 7koo-toor7 in ,paris1 a man who had strong influence on his work1 and these decorations were very reminiscent of his master4 ,the pictures were fifteen by forty-five feet in size1 and the themes were 8,the ,flight of ,night0 and 8,the ,discoverer10 of which only photographs remain to tell the tale4 ,today the mural painter produces his work on canvas instead of on the wall1 a process that enables him to do most of the labor in the studio1 and in case of painter of the portrait above all1 has confined his mural work to the decorations in the ,boston ,public ,library4 ,these are of such superlative quality as to cause regret that the man1 in the course of a most active artistic life1 could not have found time to do more4 ,mr4 ,sargent's parents were ,americans4 ,they are his sole claim to nationality2 for he was born in ,italy1 received his art education in ,france1 and has resided for many years in ,england4 ,sargent1 in short1 is thoroughly cosmopolitan in himself and in his art4 ,his ,boston ,library decorations are singularly original1 of profound symbolism1 disclosing deep intellectuality and serious study4 ,his work here1 says ,william ,a4 ,coffin1 8as a whole is like a casket of jewels40 ,it consists of a frieze1 a lunette1#b and an arched ceiling4 ,in the latter are depicted the gods of polytheism and idolatry2 there are panels of the ,prophets in the lunette1 and the ,jews are represented by twelve nude figures in subjection painting is a decoration intended for the adornment of a wall or ceiling4 ,as a rule1 it is painted in more or less simple1 flat tones1 so as to carry some distance1 and under the old methods1 known as fresco painting1 it was a process of painting in water colors on wet plaster1 the portion of the wall on which the artist was to paint being prepared over night1 so as to be in proper state to receive the color4 ,the painter had to work from a scaffold4 ,he was also hampered by awkward positions and1 frequently1 bad lighting facilities4 ,this method was in general use from the early days of ,giotto 7#abff-accg71 to those of ,raphael 7#adhc-aebj74 ,some of the ,italians use it even now4 99 99 99 99 99 ,so mural painting differs materially from a picture painted on an easel4 ,the easel picture has more detail1 is placed in a frame when finished1 and is destined to make a decorative spot on the walls4 ,the modern mural painter now executes his design directly upon canvas in his studio1 and when it is completed it is applied to the wall space by a composition of glue and white lead4 ,when this is thoroughly dry it becomes practically a part of the construction1 though it is possible at any time to remove it1 by peeling it off1 should it be necessary4 ,as a rule1 the painter of a great mural work makes first a small sketch4 ,this is subsequently enlarged by himself1 or his assistants1 by the process of 8squaring up10 and so it is brought to the correct size4 ,these enlargements are known as 8cartoons10 which are traced on the canvas or the plaster1 and when thus drawn in are ready for the painter's brush4 ,almost the first efforts of primitive man in picture making were decorations of the walls of his rude house1 and later his temples and public buildings4 ,there are examples from the civilizations of ,egypt1 ,greece1 and ,rome wherein the work was carried to the greatest perfection4 ,we have splendid specimens of brilliant coloring from the great temples in the land of the ,pharaohs1 on their tombs and palaces1 that have remained fresh and well nigh perfect all these centuries1 while throughout ,italy1 in palaces and churches the work of the ,renaissance artists challenges the greatest admiration4 99 99 99 99 99 ,upon the walls of the buried city of ,pompeii still are frescoes that seem painted yesterday1 so fresh is the color4 ,the work of ,michelangelo and of ,raphael in the ,vatican at ,rome is perhaps the greatest of any known decorative efforts4 ,throughout ,france and ,germany the work has been greatly fostered by commissions from the state for public buildings of all sorts1 for splendid mansions and palaces of royalty4 ,in ,france1 particularly1 great attention is given to mural work4 ,the work of the ,french painter ,puvis de ,chavannes today is a return1 to a certain extent1 to the ideals and methods of expression1 to the simplicity of theme and treatment of the early masters4 ,he remains by general consent the greatest of all modern decorators1 and we are fortunate in ,america in having admirable specimens of his work in the ,boston ,public ,library4 ,our modern men1 in their mural work1 use as a rule oil paints mixed with wax1 in order to secure a flat effect and to do away with any reflection on the surface4 ,complete ,your ,mentor ,library ,subscriptions always begin with the current issue4 ,the
