,scotia1 in ,march1 #ahee4 ,in the ,sixth ,annual ,report of the ,mic-,mac ,mission1 in a letter written immediately after the event1 ,i find it thus described3 8,an event of some interest has just occurred here4 ,one of our sick ,indians1 named ,john ,paul1 has just died1 and was buried to-day4 ,i have taken from my first acquaintance with him1 a great liking to him4 ,i have spent many an hour with him in his wigwam4 ,he always listened attentively to the ,scriptures1 and engaged readily in religious conversation1 and ,i have not been without hope that the grace of ,god had taken possession of his heart4 ,efforts were made to deter him from allowing my visits2 but they were unavailing4 ,i never aimed so much to attack his ,romish errors directly1 as to dwell upon the free salvation of the ,gospel--without money and without price4 ,about last ,new ,year's ,day1 while ,i was in ,halifax1 ,i was informed that the ,romish priest had sent orders to him to leave ,hantsport1 and had threatened him with all the curses of the ,church if he remained4 ,his statement to me when ,i returned1 was3 8,i won't leave this place till ,i choose4 ,it is not in the power of any man to keep me out of ,heaven4 ,that is a matter between ,god and my own soul40 ,he said in ,indian3 8,neen alsoomse40 8,i am my own master40 ,he remained4 ,he continued to listen to the ,bible with attention1 and to receive my visits with kindness and respect till he died4 ,i now recollect that when ,i came to read to him1 he would send the small children away1 so that we might not be disturbed4 ,the last time ,i saw him was a precious season to my own soul4 ,it seemed easy to speak of the ,great ,redeemer1 and of the way of ,salvation4 ,i may say that special prayer was made for him in the ,meeting ,house1 where a number of christian friends were assembled on the day before he died1 holding a special prayer meeting on our own account4 ,more than one fervent prayer was offered up for the dying ,indian4 ,after the meeting ,i returned to my own house1 where ,i met an ,indian from ,john ,paul's wigwam1 who informed me that the poor fellow was near his end4 8,but oh10 said he1 8he is wonderfully happy6 ,he says he is going right to heaven1 and that he has already had a glimpse of that bright happy world4 ,he has been exhorting us all1 and telling us how easy it is to be saved4 ,he dreamed last night that he was in heaven4 ,heaven seemed to him to be an immense great palace1 as large as this world1 all formed of gold4 ,he saw there the glorious ,redeemer1 surrounded by an immense ,host of ,saints and ,angels1 all drest in white4 ,as he entered he thought they gathered round him and shouted3 ,,john ,,paul has come6 ,john ,paul has come60 ,the poor fellow did not die until the following morning1 and just before he died he looked up towards heaven1 and declared that he saw the angels1 and the ,glory of ,god4 ,he was astonished that the others could not see what he saw4 ,he wanted them to hold up his children1 that they might see the wonders that he himself saw4 ,he then sank back on his pillow and quietly expired4 ,it will be thus seen that the following ,poem is not a work of fiction4 ,it aims to relate--with some license of imagination1 of course1 else it would not be poetry--a plain historical fact4 ,the description of ,paul's skill and knowledge as a hunter1 and in managing their frail little water-crafts in a sea1 is literally true of many of the ,indians1 and was true of him4 ,his peace of mind in committing his family into the hands of ,god1 after he found himself disabled1 having burst a blood vessel by carrying a large load1 from which he never recovered--he related to me3 and this is expressed in the prayer put into his mouth at the close1 8which we did not fully hear or share40 ,it may be added that after the ,poem was written1 ,i read it to the ,indian who gave me the account of ,john ,paul's death1 and as he spoke the ,english language well1 he had no difficulty in understanding it4 ,and he assured me that it described the scene correctly4 ,i may add that the measure--or rather the utter disregard of all regular measure--was suggested by an old poem ,i saw somewhere1 describing a very different scene1 and the 8wildness0 of it appealed to me to be just suited to a scene of the ,wilderness and the wigwam4 ,it will not surely be deemed a very great stretch of 8poetic license0 to represent oneself as an eye- and ear-witness of a scene1 with the surroundings of which he was so familiar1 and which had been so vividly described by those who really were present4 ,nor need we speculate about the cause of dreams or their significance4 ,no one will deny that they may be a very exact index of the state of mind at the time1 of the one who dreams4 ,and the earnest prayer of the writer1 is1 that the reader of these verses1 and himself1 may be1 at the time of our departure1 so full of joy and peace in believing1 that whether waking or dreaming1 we may 8rejoice with that joy which is unspeakable and full of glory1 receiving the end of our faith1 even the salvation of our souls40 ,,silas ,t4 ,,rand4 ,hantsport1 ,n4 ,s4 ,illustration ,the ,dying sweet my minutes roll2 ,a mortal paleness on my cheek1 ,and glory in my soul40--,watts4 ,i4 ,upon his bed of clay1 ,wasting away1 ,day after day1 ,a sick and suffering ,indian lay3 ,no lordly ,chieftain he1 ,of boasted pedigree1 ,or famed for bravery ,in battle1 or for cruelty2 ,he was of low degree1 ,the child of poverty1 ,and from his infancy1 ,inured to hardship1 toil and pains2 ,he was a ,hunter1 bold and free1 ,of famed ,,acadia',s plains4 ,he'd roamed at will1 ,o'er rock and hill1 ,and every spot he knew1 ,of forest wide1 ,of mountain side1 ,of bush and brake1 ,of stream and lake1 ,of sunny pool and alder shade1 ,where the trout and the salmon played1 ,where the weeping willow wept1 ,where the whistling wood-cock kept1 ,where the mink and the martin crept1 ,where the wolf and the wild-cat stept1 ,where the bear and the beaver slept1 ,where the roaring torrent swept1 ,where the wandering woodman strayed1 ,where the hunter's lodge was made1 ,where his weary form was laid2 ,where the fish and the game abound1 ,where the various kinds are found1 ,every month the ,seasons round3 ,where beetling bluffs o'er hang the deep1 ,where laughing cascades foam and leap1 ,dancing away from steep to steep3 ,where the ash and the maple grew1 ,where the hawk and the eagle flew1 ,sailing in the azure blue4 ,with matchless skill1 ,he could hunt and kill1 ,the moose and the carriboo1 ,and smoothly ride ,on the rolling tide1 ,in the light and frail canoe2 ,though in angry gusts the tempest blew1 ,though the thunders roared1 ,and the torrents poured1 ,and the vivid lightnings flew2 ,with a noble pride1 ,which fear defied1 ,with steady hand and true1 ,the fragile skiff ,by the frowning cliff1 ,he could steadily guide1 ,and safely glide1 ,in joyful glee1 ,triumphantly1 ,the roaring surges through4 ,,ii4 ,and many a weary day1 ,he had toiled away1 ,in his own humble home1 ,at basket1 bark1 and broom1 ,to gain the scanty fare1 ,doled out to him grudgingly1 where ,his ancient sires1 ,kindled their fires1 ,and roamed without control1 ,over those wide domains1 ,rocks1 rivers1 hills1 and plains1 ,in undisputed right1 lords of the whole4 ,but ah6 those days were gone1 ,and weeks and months had flown1 ,since dire disease had laid him low2 ,nor huntsman's skill1 ,nor workman's will1 ,in want1 in danger1 or alarm1 ,could nerve his powerless1 palsied arm1 ,or bend his useless bow4 ,but ,god was there1 ,and fervent prayer1 ,to ,heaven ascended1 ,and sweetly blended ,with angel's song1 ,from ,seraph's tongue2 ,and ,joy was there1 and ,hope1 and ,faith1 ,triumphing over pain and death2 ,the ,light of ,truth around him shone1 ,auspicious of the brighter dawn2 ,he trusted in the living ,god1 ,as washed in ,jesus' precious blood3 ,no dread of death or priestly power1 ,could shake him in that fearful hour1 ,nor tyrant's rod4 ,the fluttering breath from his palsied lung1 ,no utterance gave to his quivering tongue2 ,but still his ear ,was bent to hear ,the ,words of ,truth and ,love2 ,his flashing eye ,glanced toward the sky1 ,and he whispered1 8,i shall die2 ,but ,god is ,love2 ,there's rest above40 ,,iii4 ,he slept6 the dying ,indian slept6 ,a balmy peace had o'er him crept1 ,and for the moment kept ,his senses steeped ,in calm and sweet repose1-- ,such as the dying ,christian only knows4 ,consumption's work was done2 ,its racking course was run2 ,his flesh was wasted1 gone2 ,he seemed but skin and bone1 ,a breathing skeleton-- ,deep silence reigned--no sound1 ,save the light fluttering round ,of scattered leaflets1 found ,upon the frozen ground1 ,and the gently whispering breeze1 ,soft sighing through the trees1 ,was in the wigwam heard2 ,the voice of man1 and beast1 and bird1 ,were hushed--save the deep drawn sigh1 ,and the feeble wail of the infant's cry1 ,soothed by the mother's sobbing lullaby1 ,and bursts of grief from children seated nigh1 ,waiting to see their father die4 ,kindred and friends were there1 ,gathered for prayer1 ,to soothe the suffering and the grief to share2 ,and ,angel ,bands were near1 ,waiting with joy to bear ,a ransomed spirit to that ,world on high1 ,that 8,heaven of joy and
