,,new ,,york ,,toronto ,,melbourne ,,bombay #aiac ,,oxford ,,plates ,,and ,,letterpress ,,printed ,,at ,,the ,,university ,,press ,,by ,,horace ,,hart ,,preface ,the ,council of the ,royal ,society of ,medicine determined in #aiab to form a section for the study of the ,history of ,medicine4 ,the section immediately became popular1 and one of its first actions was to arrange for the issue of occasional fasciculi dealing with such subjects in medical history as did not lend themselves readily to discussion4 ,mr4 ,william ,roberts pointed out in #aijc that the iconography of medical men had not yet received adequate attention1 and he published 7,the ,athenaeum1 ,no4 #cifj1 ,sept4 #ai1 #aijc1 p4 #chh7 an account of the portraits of ,dr4 ,william ,harvey which was afterwards revised and reissued in ,dr4 ,weir ,mitchell's privately printed ,some ,memoranda in regard to ,william ,harvey1 ,m4,d4 7,new ,york1 #aijg74 ,this account of the portraits of ,william ,harvey was not illustrated1 but it showed that many pictures existed4 ,the ,council of the ,historical ,section directed their ,secretaries to obtain photographs of some of the portraits and write a short account of each1 whilst they invited their ,president to superintend the reproductions in such a manner as to enable them to be issued at a moderate cost to those who wished to know how the great master of physiology appeared to his contemporaries4 ,the present fasciculus is the result4 ,it proves that the undoubted and contemporary portraits of ,harvey are more numerous than was expected1 either because #8the honest little ,doctor' liked to have his picture painted1 or1 as is the more likely1 because he could not resist the importunity of artists whom he must often have desired to help pecuniarily4 ,numerous portraits of gentlemen of the seventeenth century with peaked beards and white collars also exist1 and some of them are labelled with ,harvey's name4 ,a comparison with the genuine portraits shows that these spurious ones can be divided into two groups3 those which may have been portraits of ,harvey's brothers1 supposing that a family likeness existed1 and those which are clearly not portraits of any member of the ,harvey family even though they are labelled with ,william ,harvey's name4 ,the genuine portraits1 as they are seen in this collection1 arranged in the order of apparent age1 show that ,harvey had a long face1 not unlike that of ,charles ,i1 with refined features1 and that his expression1 always thoughtful1 became one of settled melancholy as he grew older4 ,his hands especially seem to have attracted the attention of the better painters2 wonderfully shapely with long1 thin1 and nervous fingers1 they seem made for delicate dissection and experimental work4 ,his dress was a reflex of his character--in earlier years rich but not gaudy2 in later years--after the execution of the ,king his master--always in sad colours relieved by muslin or lawn of the finest quality for collar and wristbands1 but never again with lace or embroidery4 ,a man of deep feeling1 prone to anger1 of the smallest stature1 on the whole lovable when he was not racked by gout or sciatica4 ,the section of the ,history of ,medicine owes its best thanks to those gentlemen who have allowed photographs to be made of the portraits in their possession1 as well as to ,mr4 ,william ,fleming of the ,royal ,college of ,physicians of ,london1 to ,mr4 ,sidney ,h4 ,badcock of ,st4 ,bartholomew's ,hospital1 to ,mr4 ,emery ,walker1 and to the ,clarendon ,press1 with its courteous grizzled than in ,no4 ,,iii and he appears to be a man of about #ee-eh4 ,the portrait is painted on canvas and measures #bc in4 by #ai in4 inside the frame1 which is decorated with the ,harvey coat of arms4 ,it was bought in ,london in #aije by the ,college on the recommendation of ,dr4 ,theodore ,williams4 ,it resembles1 but is not identical with1 the portrait engraved by ,houbraken after ,bemmel at the cost of ,i4 and ,p4 ,knapton in #agci1 during the lifetime of ,dr4 ,richard ,mead4 ,illustration3 ,,iv ,v ,,the ,,rolls ,,park ,,portrait ,this portrait1 attributed to ,william ,dobson was made4 ,the picture was formerly at ,rolls ,park1 ,essex1 and was removed to ,aston ,hall1 ,oswestry1 ,salop by ,captain ,richard ,lloyd1 one of the lineal descendants of the ,harvey family through his mother1 a daughter of ,admiral ,sir ,eliab ,harvey4 ,it appears very doubtful whether the portrait was ever intended to represent ,dr4 ,william ,harvey4 ,illustration3 ,v ,,vi ,,caius ,,college1 ,,cambridge ,a half-length hanging in the ,fellows' ,combination ,room at ,caius ,college1 ,cambridge4 ,it represents ,harvey looking almost full-faced at the spectator4 ,he wears a dark jacket with a large white linen collar4 ,the face is not so thin or worn as in some of the other portraits1 and is apparently that of a younger man4 ,the hair is scanty on the top of the head1 but he is wearing his moustache and beard in the shape made familiar by other portraits4 ,the painting measures #bc in1 by #bj in4 ,it was given to the ,college in #agih by the ,earl of ,leicester1 afterwards ,marquis of ,townshend4 ,the painter is unknown4 ,information received from the ,master of the ,college--,dr4 ,hugh ,kerr ,anderson ,f4,r4,s4--and from ,dr4 ,j4 ,venn1 ,f4,r4,s4 ,illustration3 ,,vi ,,vii statement that it had been given to him #8some time ago' by ,lord ,besborough4 ,the photograph from which the collotype was made was kindly lent by ,dr4 ,matthew ,hay1 ,professor of ,forensic ,medicine and ,public ,health in the ,university of ,aberdeen4 ,illustration3 ,,vii ,,viii ,,bodleian ,,library ,,portrait ,the ,bodleian ,library at ,oxford contains a portrait of ,william ,harvey ascribed to ,j4 ,wollaston4 ,it is a bust1 three-quarters to left2 long grey hair1 brushed back off the forehead1 grey moustache and tuft on chin2 face deeply lined2 white falling collar with tassel2 black gown2 painted in an oval spandrel4 ,a canvas #cj in4 by #be in4 ,given to the ,university by ,humphrey ,bartholomew of ,university ,college in #agce in his set of eight doctors4 ,the portrait is similar1 but not exactly so1 to a mezzotint by ,mc,ardell4 7,catalogue of ,oxford ,portraits4 ,compiled by ,mrs4 ,reginald ,lane ,poole1 vol4 i1 p4 #ea1 ,no4 #abf1 ,oxford1 #ahab47 ,illustration3 ,,viii ,,ix ,,dr4 ,,franck ,,bright',s ,,portrait ,,of ,,harvey ,this portrait is undoubtedly the most pleasing picture of ,dr4 ,william ,harvey4 ,it is owned by the ,rev4 ,james ,franck ,bright1 ,d4,d41 formerly ,master of ,university ,college1 ,oxford4 ,the picture is at ,hollow ,hill1 ,ditchingham1 ,norfolk1 and the ,historical ,section is greatly indebted to ,dr4 ,bright for lending the negative from which this collotype has been made4 ,the picture was inherited from ,dr4 ,richard ,bright 7#aghi-aheh71 physician to ,guy's ,hospital1 to whom it was given by ,sir ,francis ,milman1 ,m4,d4 7#agdf-ahba74 ,it is unsigned and has always been attributed to ,sir ,anthony ,van ,dyck 7#aeii-afda71 though several later critics prefer to think that it was painted by ,william van ,bemmel 7#afcj-agjh74 ,it is a three-quarter length on canvas measuring #d ft4 #c in4 by #c ft4 #d in41 and represents ,harvey standing and leaning lightly upon a crutch stick which he holds in his right hand1 whilst in his left is a handkerchief with a gold fringe4 ,he is dressed soberly in black with the plain white collar4 ,the hair is iron-grey and long1 as we know that he usually wore it4 ,the face is small1 drawn1 pointed1 with a good strong brow and forehead and a delicate mouth1 shaded but not concealed by the small moustache and slightly peaked beard4 ,the expression is remarkably thoughtful and almost suffering1 for the painter has represented the mood in which ,dr4 ,ent found him1 when in reply to the question1 #8,satin' salva omnia8' he gave the noble answer1 #8,qui possint1 ubi turbarum plena respublica1 egoque adhuc ipsemet in alto mari8' ,the hands are singularly delicate and are most beautifully painted1 with much character4 ,there is no background to the picture1 but in the right top quarter of the canvas is painted the coat armour usually assigned to the ,harvey family1 complete with crest and motto1 which are not elsewhere given4 ,the arms are those of the ancient ,harvy family quartered with the coat used by ,sir ,daniel ,harvey of ,coombe ,hill1 ,surrey1 viz4 ,argent1 two bars wavy1 sable on a chief of the last three crosses pate fitche or2 and or1 a chief indented sable1 three crescents argent4 ,the crest is the #8stemma' of the lighted candle entwined by two serpents and the motto #8piu 7,h7arde1 piu ,splend7ide7'4 ,the crest is a specially interesting feature of the armorial bearings1 for it is similar to the #8stemma' or memorial to ,harvey discovered at ,padua in #ahic and described by ,prof4 ,darwin in the ,cambridge ,antiquarian ,society's ,communications1 vol4 viii 7#ahid74 ,the motto1 too1 does not appear elsewhere1 so it may be assumed that these armorial bearings were adopted by ,william ,harvey for his individual use4 ,it is interesting to speculate whether the #8stemma' at ,padua was placed in position when ,harvey was a student and was thus prophetic1 or whether it was not put into the cloister by his order when he visited ,padua many years later and had already made his name as #8a medical light'1 in which case the crest is merely symbolic4 ,illustration3 ,,ix ,x ,,royal ,,college ,,of ,,physicians 7,in the ,large ,library7 ,,oil ,,painting ,,by ,,cornelius ,,janssen ,three-quarter figure1 sitting in a large arm-chair1 directed to the left2 three-quarter face1 looking at the spectator2 in gown1 the arms of which are fastened with braided loops2 the plum-coloured velvet sleeves of the under-coat have reversed cuffs4 ,the left hand rests on a stone parapet1 the finger outstretched as if in demonstration2 the right hand holds a doctor's hat1 which rests between the knees and is held sideways4 ,the face is thin and long1 with a small peaked beard and scanty grey hair4 ,there is a stone pillar in the middle background2 curtain to right1 clouds to left4 ,size of canvas #eb in4 by #db in4 ,the pedigree and authenticity of this portrait are incontestable1 as it was one of the three pictures saved at the ,great ,fire of ,london in #afff1 which destroyed the ,college of ,physicians then situated in ,amen ,corner4 ,it is possible that the portrait was expressly painted for the ,college and it may have been a gift from ,harvey himself4 ,it is a pleasing picture spoilt by the right hand1 which is so painted as to make it seem deformed4 ,the painter ,cornelius ,janssen or ,janson van ,keulen 7#aeij-affd7 lived in ,england from about #afah1 until #afdh1 and was for the whole of that time a popular portrait painter4 ,there are several reputed ,janssen portraits of ,harvey1 some at least of which may have been painted as replicas by one or other of ,janssen's pupils4 ,illustration3 ,x ,,xi ,,mr4 ,d',,arcy ,,power',s ,,portrait ,,of ,,harvey ,a three-quarter length of ,harvey on a panel measuring #ae in4 x #ab in4 ,harvey is represented standing in his study1 with his left hand resting upon a table whereon is spread a diagram of the arterial system4 ,he is clothed in a long-sleeved1 damascened waistcoat confined at the waist by a belt1 with collar and wristbands of point lace4 ,over all he wears a long gown heavily trimmed with fur4 ,the background is a green curtain partially drawn aside to show the shelves of his study1 and on the curtain is an inscription in red letters3 #8,gulielmus ,harveus ,m4,d4 ,aet4 sue #fa1 #afci4' ,the accessories are interesting4 ,on the table a watch keeps down the edge of the diagram to prevent it folding up4 ,there is an inkstand with a quill pen in it and a terrestrial globe4 ,immediately behind the table is a shelf on which is a simple microscope fitted with a coarse and fine adjustment1 a retort partly filled with fluid1 a pair of scissors1 a dissecting-knife1 and a sheet of paper4 ,the bookcase consists of six wooden shelves divided by a median partition4 ,the lowermost shelf has a urine-glass and a minim measure4 ,in the partition nearest ,harvey are two flasks1 one containing a green1 the other a red fluid2 a wide-mouthed jar covered with parchment--the jar is earthenware--and behind it are two square bottles like case-bottles4 ,a quire of loose paper leans against it4 ,on the other side of the partition of this lower shelf are two bottles1 one unstoppered1 the other stoppered1 filled respectively with a red and green fluid4 ,there is also an object like a catherine wheel4 ,the second shelf from the bottom contains thirteen dumpy duodecimo volumes bound uniformly in parchment1 whilst upon the other side of the partition are three quarto volumes well bound in morocco and piled one upon the other4 ,the third shelf from the bottom is filled with books1 four of which are smaller than the rest4 ,the fourth shelf is wholly filled with books except for a space showing where one has been removed4 ,the fifth shelf contains books of various sizes4 ,on the top shelf are two skulls1 a square case upon which stands a stoppered phial filled with some red substance1 and four earthenware jars whose mouths are closed with parchment covers tied on4 ,the picture is unsigned4 ,it is painted in the traditional style1 where much attention was paid to the minute details of dress and accessories1 so that the work became almost that of a miniaturist4 ,the face is clearly that of ,harvey1 a little lined1 beard and moustache of the usual cut1 hair worn long1 partly hidden by a skull-cap4 ,it represents ,harvey in his happier days when as yet the ,king his master was alive1 for in #afci--the date of the picture--he had just been appointed ,senior ,physician in ,ordinary to the ,king1 a post which carried with it those lodgings at ,whitehall pillaged by the mob in #afdb1 when his goods were stolen and his papers scattered4 ,the picture may show these very lodgings4 ,in spite of its appearance of age there is reason to doubt whether it is a contemporary portrait4 ,illustration3 ,,xi ,,xii ,,royal ,,society ,,portrait ,a half-figure directed to the left1 three-quarter face1 looking at the spectator1 in dark close-fitting cloak with a row of closely-placed buttons in the centre1 white collar 7which meets at the throat and is cut square7 without tassels1 black skull-cap1 which almost entirely covers the hair1 except at the left side2 grey moustache1 slight grey hair on lower chin4 ,size about #cj in4 by #be in4 ,it probably represents ,harvey between fifty and sixty years of age4 ,this portrait is stated in ,c4 ,r4 ,weed's ,descriptive ,catalogue of the ,portraits in the ,possession of the ,royal ,society1 #ahfj1 p4 #cf1 to be by ,de ,reyn1 but in the numerous engravings of it the painter is given as ,janssen4 ,it was presented to the ,royal ,society by the ,rev4 ,john ,mapletoft1 ,m4,d4 7#afca-agba71 who was elected ,f4,r4,s4 ,february #aj1 #afge-f4 ,the collotype is made from a steel engraving of the picture4 ,jan de ,reyn 7#afaj-afgh7 was a pupil of ,van ,dyck1 whom he accompanied to ,england and after whose death in #afda he returned to his home at ,dunkirk4 ,illustration3 ,,xii ,,xiii ,,faithorne',s ,,bust ,a copy of the bust of ,harvey by ,william ,faithorne 7the elder7 7#afaf-afia74 ,the bust1 without the pedestal and allegorical figures1 forms the frontispiece to the ,english edition of ,the ,anatomical ,exercitations concerning the ,generation of ,living ,creatures1 published during ,harvey's lifetime in #afec4 ,the likeness is probably a good one1 as ,faithorne was personally known to ,harvey and he was one of the most distinguished engravers and portrait painters of his time4 ,it should therefore represent ,harvey as he appeared at the age of #fe or #ff years4 ,illustration3 ,,xiii ,,xiv ,,the ,,king',s ,,weston ,,portrait ,this portrait is at ,king's ,weston ,house near ,bristol in ,gloucestershire1 and is in the possession of ,p4 ,napier ,miles1 ,esq41 to whom the ,historical ,section offers its grateful thanks for the facilities he has offered for obtaining a successful photograph4 ,thanks are also given to ,dr4 ,j4 ,a4 ,nixon of ,clifton1 who has spared himself no trouble to obtain the photograph from which the present collotype was made4 ,the picture is an oil-painting on canvas measuring #dj in4 by #bh in4 ,it is let into the wall on the right-hand side of the fireplace1 with the light of the great west or north-west window falling full upon it4 ,it is surrounded by a plaster moulding grained in imitation of a light wooden frame4 ,the portrait is that of an old man--nearer #hj than #gj--with a small oval face1 hollow-cheeked and wide-browed4 ,the face is deeply lined and the eyes sunken4 ,the beard is pointed1 the hair grey1 scantier and more nearly white than in ,janssen's picture at the ,royal ,college of ,physicians4 ,the whole expression is one of fatigue4 ,he is sitting in a chair at a table1 clothed in black and bare-headed4 ,his gown is short-sleeved1 without strings or buttons4 ,the sleeves of a more shiny 7velvet87 jacket or doublet show below the short sleeves of the gown4 ,they end in a narrow white linen cuff1 which is turned back to a depth of about half an inch4 ,the gown1 which is edged with fur1 is open in front and shows the breast of a black velvet jacket1 which is quite plain1 without buttons or join in front4 ,round the neck is a soft white collar1 smoothly turned down and not rumpled as in ,janssen's picture4 ,the linen of the collar and cuffs is of delicate texture1 as is shown by its transparency4 ,harvey is represented sitting in a chair at a table1 with the right hand resting upon a book1 in old calf binding without lettering1 which stands on end with its back to the spectator4 ,the hands are exquisitely painted1 small and very life-like4 ,it is almost possible to feel the difference between the grasp of the right hand1 which holds the book1 and that of the left1 which lies negligently on the end of the arm of the chair4 ,the face1 which is turned three-quarters to the left1 has very decided high lights on the forehead and left cheek4 ,the table is on the left side of the picture1 and the colour of the chair1 table cover--which is naturally indented by the knee of the sitter--and book are all of a light brown4 ,the chair resembles that in ,janssen's picture4 ,it has become brown with age1 but was perhaps originally pink4 ,the background of the picture1 which is without detail1 is of a neutral brown tint1 which lies between raw sienna and burnt umber1 and is almost identical with the colour of the chair and table1 which are thus rendered inconspicuous1 though the figure is thereby thrown into relief4 ,the canvas is labelled #8,dr4 ,harvey' in bold letters at the top right-hand corner4 ,a copy in oils1 #ae in4 by #ab in41 was made for ,dr4 ,nixon and is signed #8,frank ,holmes1 ,clifton1 #aiac'4 ,miss ,russell1 an aunt of ,lord de ,clifford1 who formerly owned ,king's ,weston1 writes3 #8,the pictures in the ,great ,hall at ,king's ,weston near ,bristol1 formerly the seat of the ,southwell family1 were placed there by ,mr4 ,edward ,southwell1 who died in #agee4 ,they are all to be accounted family portraits except two hung together1 one of ,dr4 ,william ,harvey1 the other of ,sir ,heneage ,finch1 ,earl of ,nottingham1 and the connection of these two is easily accounted for4 ,sir ,robert ,southwell1 the 8,ned ,southwell0 of ,swift's letters 7#afce-agjb71 principal ,secretary of ,state for ,ireland under ,william ,,iii and five times ,president of the ,royal ,society from #afij1 studied medicine at ,oxford--whilst ,harvey was at ,merton ,college--and anatomy abroad4 ,he married on #bfth ,january1 #affd1 ,elizabeth1 eldest daughter of ,sir ,edward ,dering of ,surrenden-,dering in ,kent--a 8very pretty woman0 according to ,pepys--whose mother was a daughter of ,daniel ,harvey1 ,dr4 ,william ,harvey's brother4 ,elizabeth1 another daughter of ,daniel ,harvey1 married ,heneage ,finch4 ,the two portraits therefore are those of ,lady ,southwell's ,grand-uncle and ,uncle4' ,the ,rev4 ,richard ,warner1 in his ,excursions from ,bath1 #ahja1 attributes the picture to ,sir ,peter ,lely 7#afah-afhj71 and as it is clearly in his earlier style it is modelled on the style of ,van ,dyck1 to whom it has been attributed4 ,van ,dyck1 however1 died in ,december1 #afda1 and ,harvey was not so old or worn at this time4 ,illustration3 ,,xiv ,,xv ,,national ,,portrait the centre2 the coat or cloak with six rows of braided bands1 cut square at the elbows4 ,a lighter sleeve is shown with narrow white cuffs or wristbands4 ,the right hand is resting on a pillar and holds a cap1 which is upright2 the left hand rests on the arm of the chair4 ,the falling collar has no tassels4 ,the eyes are small and dark1 the complexion sallow1 and the features worn2 the hair1 moustache1 and chin-tuft are white4 ,there is a general resemblance to ,harvey1 but the face is too round1 and the hands are certainly not like the hands portrayed in the other pictures4 ,the canvas who has very courteously supplied the photograph from which the present collotype has been made4 ,dr4 ,john ,ogle 7,harveian ,oration for #ahhj1 p4 #aah7 states--without mentioning his authority--that long inscription in ,latin4 ,the bust was carefully examined some years ago by ,mr4 ,thomas ,woolner1 ,r4,a41 who came to the conclusion that it was made from a death-mask4 ,he says of it1 #8,the features presented by the bust are clearly those of a dead face4 ,the sculptor exhibits no knowledge of sculpture except when he was copying what was directly before him4 ,with the cast of the face for his copy he has shown true artistic delineation1 but all that he has been obliged to add to make up the bust is of the worst possible quality4 ,the ears are placed entirely out of position1 the large1 redundant head of hair is altogether out of character1 imaginary1 and badly executed1 and the drapery of the shoulders is simply despicable4' ,the second collotype ,pl4 ,,xix shows that the
