99 99 99 99 ,president ,cleveland not only believes that the ,indian can be civilized1 but that it is the duty of the ,government to help4 ,he says the ,indians 8are a portion of our people1 are under the authority of our ,government1 and have a peculiar claim upon1 and are entitled to1 the fostering care and protection of the ,nation4 ,the ,government cannot relieve itself of this responsibility until they are so far trained and civilized as to be able wholly to manage and care for themselves4 ,the paths in which they should walk must be clearly marked out for them1 and they must be led or out ,christianity from the ,indians been removed1 as they could and ought to have been by the ,government1 the ,gospel long ago would have solved the ,indian problem1 and the ,gospel must solve it perilous to the negro4 ,his risk is in over-education4 ,manual training is good for him1 of course4 ,he has a natural talent for that which came down from inheritance and has been worked in with both care and pains4 ,he also needs moral training1 though this is not an ancient heir-loom in his family4 ,but for his mental development1 the fundamental branches1 few and simple1 are thought to be enough4 ,the higher range of study1 even if he be capable of reaching it1 would only harm him and unfit him for his place4 ,this opinion1 held by not a few1 has been stated by ,bishop ,pierce as follows3 8,the negroes are entitled to elementary education the same as the whites from the hands of the ,state4 ,it is the duty of the church to improve the colored ministry1 but by theological race2 and a fallacy1 for if he were1 or so far as he has become so from the force of circumstances1 the more urgent the demand for superior training4 ,the negro is a man1 and1 like any other man1 is profited by choice mental culture4 ,furthermore1 the disabilities of the past make his higher education specially necessary1 and as fast as possible the most promising of the black race should attain forces which generations and centuries have accumulated4 ,but twenty-one years1 and of wretched environment too1 have sufficed to show that souls clad in the blackest ,african setting are capable of the highest thought and most difficult studies4 ,the evidence on this point is abundant and conclusive4 ,to deny the negro this ability is only to advertise one's ignorance or prejudice4 ,and since ,god has written his truth both in his word and works1 and also given to the black man aptitude and thirst for the highest and most hidden1 it does not become a race longer out of darkness and further ,african novice will misapply and mispronounce grandiloquent speech can only be cured by the presence of some scholarly men who have climbed far enough to see the heights and to know that the low-land is a bog4 ,but wise self-reliance is as rare among an ignorant people as conceit and folly are abundant4 ,one part of the problem before us is to develop manly courage4 ,slavery cut the hamstrings of independence and sapped very manhood4 ,as a rule the negro is not certain of his rights nor is he heroic in maintaining them4 ,he has long been habituated to wrong1 and the passive virtues have become disproportionate4 ,from the days of the ,cyrenian he has ever borne the cross1 and naturally his back is bent and his knees are weak4 ,probably there is no other man in this country who can be wronged ,she replied1 8,fricassee40 ,in that hot school-room it seemed almost possible that these ,protestant teachers might be unwillingly converted into female ,friars1 according to the little girl's definition4 ,the teachers are reaching out in every direction4 ,in a little tumbled down1 or tumbling down1 log cabin1 ,miss ,robertson holds mission service every ,sabbath4 ,from seventy to ninety1 mostly men and boys1 gather to sing1 hear ,god's word read1 and gather useful lessons from the wise and loving counsel of this earnest ,christian soul4 ,one hundred dollars are needed at once to put this cabin into such shape as shall make it suitable for these services4 ,in pushing out through the swamps that lie all round ,dorchester1 the teachers not infrequently see great1 venomous snakes ,tougaloo1 having been looked forward to with eager expectancy for months--especially by the carpenter's apprentices and other wood-working students1 who1 no doubt1 next to ,mr4 ,stephen ,ballard himself1 of ,new ,york1 feel a sense of personal proprietorship and joyful interest in 8,ballard school-house10 which was dedicated that day4 ,the new school-house is not only a monument to ,mr4 ,ballard's philanthropy1 but also to the value and success of the mechanical training given here1 as the work was almost entirely done by the students4 ,the day of dedication was the third of a succession of days unusually cold for us1 and the air was full of snow-flakes1 so that few of the expected guests from a distance made their appearance1 and the extreme unpleasantness of the day kept most of even our near neighbors at home4 ,however1 besides the students and their immediate friends1 we had as guests ,miss ,dickey1 the honored head of ,mt4 ,hermon ,seminary at ,clinton1 with two of pupils in a primary school4 ,as ,i looked down the rows of little seats on this my first visit for the year1 ,i saw at once that many new pupils had taken their places in this company since the first of ,september1 but some of the little folks have grown so familiar that ,i realize they are soon to 8graduate0 into the ,english department of the ,university4 ,at least half a dozen of those before me are the children of parents1 one or both of whom were pupils at ,fisk at some time during the first ten years of its work4 ,they come from comfortable and well-regulated homes in the city1 as do the majority of those primary pupils4 ,the special occasion that drew us together to-day was the public exercise of the practice teachers who taught in the school during the fall term4 ,every member of the senior normal class spends six weeks1 at some time during the year1 in practice work1 under the direction and criticism of the principal of the school4 ,to-day each of the four teachers taught three classes ten minutes apiece1 and in the two hours thus occupied1 not only the regulation studies1 reading and number1 were presented1 but very interesting lessons were taught in elementary grammar1 geography of ,tennessee1 form1 color and physiology4 ,when the bright sunlight gave its aid by flashing through a prism the rainbow colors on the wall1 the little people were quick to tell how these colors might be combined and others formed2 and when to the physiology class there were shown the heart1 lungs and liver of a sheep1 they gathered with so much interest around their young teacher that spectators and school were forgotten in their childish eagerness to ask and answer questions4 ,in one of the motion-songs that varied the exercises of the afternoon1 these little people sang of the shoemaker1 8,all he wants is his elbow room10 and as ,i came away impressed with a sense of the power developing in that school-room and thought of the future of its pupils1 ,i said gladly to myself1 8,all they want is their elbow room40 ,these public exercises are held semi-annually1 in order that all members of the normal class may have opportunity to show the result of their practice is1 with more earnest desire for a literal answer to their prayers1 ,his ,kingdom would speedily come in the hearts of men4 ,his will would be more generally done 8on earth1 as it is in ,heaven40 ,,volcano ,,and ,,tidal ,,wave4 ,a good sister recently came into the parsonage very much exercised in mind4 ,after a while she said3 8,well1 it's just as ,i expected4 ,one of them things has broke out in ,summerville40 ,we asked3 8,what is it8 ,the smallpox80 8,no40 8,the cholera80 8,no40 8,a riot80 8,no4 ,not any disease or anything like that4 ,it is one of them things4 ,i think they call it a volcano1 or something like a tidal wave1 you know40 ,there is nothing new under the sun1 says the wise man1 but ,i hardly think he saw in his day and generation--a volcano--something like a tidal wave6 ,and yet the idea is a good one1 typical1 ,i think1 of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 which1 years ago1 began in a humble way to pour forth--not fire and smoke and ashes--although the outcome of its work was fire and smoke and ashes to false opinion and wrong4 ,like a volcano1 it sent forth material which moulded itself into the public sentiment of years ago1 and since1 like a tidal wave1 this sentiment has continued to sweep over the continent until all the nationalities represented in this country are beginning to recognize the ,fatherhood of ,god and the brotherhood of man4 ,,geo4 ,c4 ,,rowe4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,cumberland ,,mountains4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,b4 ,,dodge1 ,,pleasant ,,hill1 ,,tenn4 ,what have you done8 ,this is a fair question for friends of this mission1 ,north1 ,west and ,east1 to ask4 ,i propose briefly to answer it4 ,i left my pastorate in the 8,pine ,tree0 ,state1 and1 with my wife and daughter1 entered upon the work here ,october #ast1 #ahhd4 ,to leave a ,new ,england home for these mountain wilds is much like entering a new world4 ,but1 coming not to play1 but work1 duty said3 8,look about you--,east1 ,west1 ,north and ,south40 ,it was done1 and the outlook showed a large amount of illiteracy in every neighborhood1 many living so far away from school as to be totally beyond their reach1 and many young people growing up with no knowledge of books4 ,what could be done8 ,more impressively the answer came than ,i can tell it3 ,build a house for school and worship which may bless present and future generations4 ,but1 from a human standpoint1 to erect such a building as was needed seemed extremely difficult1 if not impossible1 with limited means on every side1 no market1 no railroad1 and #b1jjj feet above the sea level4 ,but1 being used to hard work from early life1 and not easily scared1 ,i grappled with the idea of building a house for the double purpose named4 ,i laid the matter before the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and was by them requested to undertake the building of such a house as1 in my judgment1 was needed4 ,i began the work ,march #ast1 #ahhe4 ,a good lady donated five acres of land 7a lovely spot7 for church and school purposes1 and deeded the lot to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and also contributed #ej to the building4 ,i then headed a subscription paper with #ej1 and the people here added enough by timber and labor to make in all #cjj4 ,i then employed a man to put in a good foundation of split stone1 laid in masonry and elevated twenty inches above the ground1 the size of the building to be #ejdg feet1 including tower4 ,what next8 ,it was to hew a white oak frame in the forest and haul it to the building spot1 then have it framed4 ,at length ,i invited men to raise it1 and women to bring a dinner4 ,when gathered we sought1 with failed4 ,must we give it up8 ,not yet4 ,in the saddle ,i went down the mountain to ,lost ,creek1 sixteen miles1 and to ,sparta1 seventeen1 for lumber4 ,through much hardship it was hauled1 it taking two days for a good team to make one trip1 and sometimes getting a thorough soaking in a storm by a night camp-fire4 ,some forty loads were dragged up the steep mountain and on to ,pleasant ,hill4 ,this coming up the ,cumberland ,mountains with a load means much more than a stranger can comprehend4 ,when it takes three hours to go two miles we may suppose there is some pulling4 ,you can find some hills in ,western ,massachusetts and in ,maine1 but they are mole mounds as compared with the brow of these mountains4 ,but the men who had the hauling in charge were patient and faithful to the last4 ,the work went slowly on for lack of funds4 ,twice it stopped1 and no sound of saw or hammer was heard4 ,some prophesied it would take seven years to complete the building4 ,troubled dreams and wakefulness came1 and sleep said1 8,if you don't go on with the work ,i will not come to you40 ,i then said to the carpenter3 8,come ,monday morning1 and ,i will be responsible for your pay40 ,he dear children4 ,he has awakened in the hearts of ,christian men1 women1 young people1 and even little children1 an interest in this work1 so that1 by closest attention and careful application of funds1 ,god has enabled me to engineer the work till ,i can see that ,he means the house shall stand complete1 without so much as a nickel of debt upon it4 ,we have also organized a ,congregational has been spread out upon the sides and elongated in the rear1 with sliding doors to shut off each of the several new parts into additional recitation and ,sunday-school rooms1 and the whole to be crowded for morning prayers and ,sabbath service4 ,there have also come on1 the ,dakota ,home for ,young ,women1 the ,bird's ,nest for ,little ,children and the ,cottage for ,little ,boys1 each of the three under a matron1 and the ,dakota ,hall for ,young ,men1 with one of the teachers' families there in charge4 ,then come the well-built shops for shoemaking1 carpentry and blacksmithing2 and lastly1 the three-story dining-hall1 with accommodation for a hundred and fifty at the tables1 with rooms for teachers and workers1 and a whole story yet to be finished off1 when funds are in hand1 to accommodate more girls4 ,the whole is heated by furnaces and supplied with the most approved apparatus for cooking1 baking and laundry work4 ,but1 beyond this expanding of the shell1 ,i find the inner regards himself2 but for ,christ's needy ones he has more than once accepted the burden4 ,this he has now again done4 ,in ,santa ,barbara he purchased a lot for #fjj1 for which land he is personally liable1 but which he holds in trust for the mission4 ,on that lot1 by the close of this week1 a chapel will be erected by a ,christian friend1 at a cost of #cdj4 ,for this property a moderate rental is to be paid by the mission1 and when the sums thus paid shall amount to the price of the land it1 together with the building1 7toward which the little ,chinese band have already paid #aej71 becomes the property of the mission4 ,in ,san ,diego the course pursued has been the same1 only that here1 owing to the rise in real estate1 the amount assumed by ,mr4 ,pond and one other friend of the work1 is #b1ejj4 ,by similar acts of ,christian self-sacrifice in the past1 the mission has already become possessed of property to the value of #aj1jjj1 all without the burden of debt1 or an even temporary diversion of its funds4 ,but is the mission work worth all this toil and sacrifice8 ,mr4 ,pond1 in a carefully guarded statement1 says1 that since the establishment of this mission the ,chinese converts number over #fjj1 at least fifty having been added during the past year2 and this statement1 you observe1 makes no mention of results wide reaching in their beneficence which do not involve this radical heart work4 ,if this statement be accepted as correct1 the question is answered4 ,but is there really any such a character as a ,christian ,chinese8 ,many persons say1 8,no40 ,it is but a day or two since a ,christian man denied it1 in my hearing4 ,my reply to him was to ask for his standard of judgment4 ,if his demand was that ,chinamen should cease to become ,chinese1 and1 abandoning all their associations1 habits and prejudices1 become simply ,americans1 doubtless they are not ,christians2 but in that case1 neither are converts from many another nationality to be reckoned as ,christians4 ,or if absolute freedom from infirmities and faults be made the test1 this would shut them out1 but it would shut out many others also4 ,alas6 it would be fatal to the hopes of the writer4 ,but if the test be the same we apply to ourselves1 love more or less enthusiastic1 loyalty true1 even if troubling1 to our ,divine ,master1 and our judgments be according to the law of charity1 then we have no more reason to look askant upon a ,chinese than upon a ,bohemian1 or a negro brother4 ,the grace of ,god works out in these and in those alike1 encountering similar obstacles take us out to the beach1 and we girls got in one carriage1 and we all enjoyed that ride very much because we saw the great waters we had heard so much about4 ,as we went along and saw the large1 beautiful houses closed1 ,i wondered why the people built such beautiful houses just for the summer4 ,i think they might have used their money some other way just as well as to spend all on houses
