,,in ,,central ,,africa4 ,when ,livingstone entered upon his life work in ,africa1 not quite forty years ago1 ,kuruman was the farthest inland station2 since then great things have been done for ,africa4 ,dividing that part of ,africa which lies south of the equator into three equal parts of twelve degrees each1 we find that ,kuruman falls within the southernmost division1 or ,south ,africa4 ,in the second division1 or ,south-,central ,africa1 lie ,lake ,ngami and most of ,lake ,nyassa1 both of which were discovered by ,dr4 ,livingstone4 ,in the third division1 ,central ,africa1 extending from #i degrees to #c degrees south latitude1 lies ,lake ,tanganyika1 discovered by ,burton and ,speke in #aheh4 ,to the north of ,tanganyika are several lakes1 the largest of which is the ,victoria ,nyanza4 ,the ,victoria ,nyanza was discovered by ,speke in #aheh1 and circumnavigated by ,stanley in #ahge4 ,it lies between the #cb;d and #ceth parallels of longitude from ,greenwich1 and extends from #b degrees south latitude to the north of the equator by the fraction of a degree4 ,its superficial area is #ba1ejj square miles1 being nearly as large as ,lake ,michigan1 and #ajj fathoms will not measure its deepest waters4 ,the lake is in a direct line about #ebj miles from the east coast1 and about #a1fjj miles from the west coast4 ,ujiji1 on the eastern shore of ,tanganyika1 is #fbe miles from the east coast1 in a direct line4 ,these great lakes1 ,nyassa1 ,tanganyika and ,nyanza1 afford excellent facilities for missionary operations4 ,they make the torrid heat of the equatorial sun tolerable2 they cause rains which produce a luxuriant vegetation2 and their broad1 deep waters enable the missionaries to travel swiftly from point to point by steamer1 bringing them within easy communication with various and distant tribes4 ,the first of these great inland missions was established by the ,free ,church of ,scotland4 ,the discoveries of ,livingstone had drawn the attention of the ,church to interior ,africa as early as #ahfa1 and some correspondence was had with the great traveller1 who recommended the shores of ,lake ,nyassa as affording an excellent site for a new mission4 ,it was not until #ahge1 however1 when ,livingstone's ,last ,journals had been published1 and had created a great enthusiasm for the redemption of ,africa1 that the ,free ,church definitely decided to undertake the enterprise4 ,the money asked for1 #ej1jjj1 was soon raised4 ,the pioneer party left ,scotland early in the ,spring of #ahge1 and arrived at its destination in the following ,october4 ,the route was up the ,zambesi ,river to the ,murchison ,cataracts1 the steamer and goods being carried around the cataracts by #hjj porters1 and launched again in the ,shir ,river1 reaching the lake in two days from the cataracts4 ,the whole distance is about #djj miles4 ,later in the year the second party1 under ,dr4 ,stewart1 the head of the mission1 started for the lake4 ,the site of the mission station1 ,livingstonia1 was chosen on ,cape ,maclear1 at the southern end of the lake4 ,buildings were put up at once1 and attempts made to secure the friendship of the natives1 few of whom manifested any hostility4 ,trips were made to the northern and western shores of the lake1 and no opposition was encountered anywhere4 ,the missionaries say no real obstacle to the success of the mission presents itself4 ,it has been found1 however1 that ,livingstonia will have to be abandoned4 ,it has a good harbor1 but the soil is poor and the land lies low1 and is too circumscribed to sustain a large population4 ,besides1 the tsetse fly1 that destroyer of cattle1 has appeared4 ,a new site is to be chosen1 and an expedition is searching for one on the west coast1 about #ade miles north of ,livingstonia1 among a people of ,zulu origin1 called the ,maviti4 ,the ,maviti inhabit a high table land1 and are quite numerous4 ,of course1 but little actual mission work has been performed thus far4 ,the mission has no permanent home1 and time is required for preparation4 ,sunday services have been held from the first1 and a school with a fair attendance is carried on4 ,a great deal has been accomplished1 however1 in suppressing the slave trade4 ,formerly thousands of slaves were sent across the lake from ,jumbe's1 who is a ,mohammedan1 but the ,arab traders have now left the lake and gone inland to carry on their nefarious business4 ,two members of the mission1 ,dr4 ,laws and ,capt4 ,elton1 have died1 and all have had the fever4 ,a short distance to the south of ,livingstonia1 and closely connected with it1 is ,blantyre1 the mission of the church of ,scotland4 ,it has a very favorable location in the ,shir hills4 ,it is high1 cool1 well wooded1 a stream is near1 it has good soil1 and an iron mine4 ,until last year the evangelistic work was performed by a missionary from ,livingstonia1 but now an ordained missionary is in charge4 ,the gardeners have a large tract under cultivation1 and ,blantyre is evidently to become the centre of a large population4 ,the natives are gathering around it1 they are very friendly1 and they are giving more attention to the cultivation of the soil4 ,the school has many promising scholars4 ,the second mission established in ,central ,africa was that of the ,church ,missionary ,society on the ,victoria ,nyanza4 ,november #ae1 #ahge1 a ,london paper printed a letter from ,stanley calling for ,christian missionaries to enter ,mtesa's country1 ,uganda4 ,three days later the ,church ,missionary ,society received a letter from ,an ,unprofitable ,servant1 offering #be1jjj for such a mission4 ,shortly afterward another anonymous contribution of the same amount was received1 the society having meanwhile decided to undertake the mission4 ,the mission party left the coast at ,bagamoyo1 in #ahgf1 in four divisions3 the first on ,july #ad1 the second on ,july #bi1 the third on the last of ,august1 and the fourth on ,september #ad4 ,after crossing the ,wami ,river1 the expedition took the route of ,mr4 ,roger ,price1 of the ,london ,missionary ,society1 to ,mpwapwa4 ,from ,mpwapwa the route was west and north to ,unyanyembe2 thence north to ,kagei1 at the southern end of the lake1 the advance party reaching that point in ,january1 #ahgg1 the journey of #hjj miles being performed in about six months1 without serious mishap4 ,one of the party1 ,dr4 ,smith1 died on the way of fever4 ,the provisions were stored at ,kagei1 but ,ukerewe ,island1 in the southern part of the lake1 was made the basis of operations4 ,lieutenant ,smith and the ,rev4 ,c4 ,t4 ,wilson proceeded to the northern shore of the lake1 entering ,rubaga1 the capital of ,mtesa's kingdom ,uganda1 on ,june #cj4 ,they were received with great favor by ,mtesa1 who is the ruler of a powerful people4 ,lieutenant ,smith remained with ,mr4 ,wilson a month1 and then returned to ,ukerewe to assist ,mr4 ,o',neill in preparing for removal4 ,mr4 ,wilson was well provided for at first by ,mtesa1 and had a house near the palace1 but the chiefs and the ,arabs used their influence against the missionary1 and the supplies of food grew smaller and less frequent1 and at last ,mr4 ,wilson was informed that he must remove farther from the palace4 ,he had1 however1 free access to the king and held divine services every ,sunday in the palace1 the king himself often taking part in them4 ,several of the ,uganda boys were gathered into a school1 and were found to be bright and quick to learn4 ,late in ,december1 ,mr4 ,wilson had news of a disaster on the lake1 and hastened south to find that ,lieutenant ,smith and ,mr4 ,o',neill had been murdered by ,lukongeh's people in a dispute raised by an ,arab trader about a dhow4 ,finding that the stores at ,kagei were almost exhausted1 ,mr4 ,wilson went on to ,unyanyembe1 whence he returned to ,uganda1 arriving at ,rubaga ,march #bf1 #ahgh4 ,the last letters received from him by way of the ,nile speak hopefully of the future4 ,the caravan1 with the bulk of the goods1 has made very slow progress4 ,porters by the thousand were required to convey them1 and porters in ,africa are arrant villains4 ,at the latest accounts the caravan was still some distance from the lake4 ,a reinforcement for ,uganda was sent out at the beginning of #ahgh1 of three young students of the ,church ,missionary ,college1 and a medical missionary1 by way of the ,nile4 ,the latest news from them stated that they reached ,berber in ,july4 ,one of their number had been sun-struck and was compelled to return4 ,thus far #fe1jjj has been received for the ,nyanza mission2 also a large part of a fund of #ej1jjj asked for by the society last ,april for the support of it4 ,the liberal donor who gave #be1jjj for the ,nyanza ,mission offered the ,london ,missionary ,society the same sum for a mission on ,lake ,tanganyika4 ,march #ae1 #ahgf1 the ,society resolved to undertake the mission4 ,the ,rev4 ,roger ,price1 who was commissioned to ascertain what was the best route to the interior1 found that by starting from ,saadani1 wagons could be used as far as ,mpwapwa1 and that the costly and vexatious system of porterage could thus be avoided so far4 ,four ordained missionaries1 one scientific man1 and one builder1 left ,london in ,march1 #ahgg1 as the first contingent of the expedition4 ,at ,saadani they divided1 four starting ,july #be1 and the rest with the caravan in ,october4 ,in ,march the expedition reached ,kirasa1 forty-five miles east of ,mpwapwa1 where they left the wagons and employed porters4 ,they reached their destination ,august #bc1 having been thirteen months on the journey from the coast1 in consequence of unexpected obstacles and vexatious delays4 ,the letters announcing the arrival were only forty-five days on the route to the coast1 and only thirty-three thence to ,london4 ,a high and healthy camping place was chosen near ,ujiji4 ,the caravan has not yet reached the lake4 ,the history of these missions is yet to be made4 ,none of them can be said to be fully established yet4 ,buildings are to be erected1 languages are to be learned1 the country is to be explored1 and the ways of the people are to be studied1 before much can be done in declaring the ,gospel4 ,the missions are well situated4 ,the country around them is thickly peopled1 and great opportunities are opening to them4 ,much good has already been done in checking the slave trade1 in opening lines of legitimate commercial traffic1 and in inducing the natives to cultivate the soil4 ,other missions will be established in due time4 ,the ,english ,baptists are prospecting for a new mission up the ,congo1 and ,lake ,bangweolo1 west of ,lake ,nyassa1 and south of ,lake ,tanganyika1 called by ,livingstone a paradise1 will become the centre of another great mission4 ,thus from the ,south1 the ,east and the ,west1 ,christian missions are approaching the heart of learning have their chief use as being aids to direct force4 ,when you have mentioned what these higher institutions have done for individuals--when you have followed the individuals to their work in their various fields1 you have only begun to tell the story of their importance4 ,if you go up into ,wisconsin1 along the lower ,fox river1 you will see one of the finest water-powers in the world4 ,it is often called the ,merrimac of the ,west4 ,i don't know how long that water-power has been there unappropriated4 ,it was there when the ,mound builder was there4 ,god proffered it to him with all its resources1 and asked him to improve it2 but failing to regard the heavenly admonition1 he passed away1 leaving but few traces behind2 only a few rude instruments and pieces of pottery4 ,all other marks of him are gone4 ,after him came the ,indian4 ,he also has passed1 to all intents and purposes4 ,then came the ,anglo-,saxon in blood and the ,puritan in civilization and culture1 and applying his inventive ingenuity to the banks of this river1 he set the water-wheel1 and the wheel has converted the power of the river into product1 and the product has turned into property1 and the property into intelligence1 and the intelligence under this same productive ingenuity of the ,puritan has turned into morality1 and that into religion4 ,so we have this great native force1 directed to the account of the kingdom of ,god1 transmuted into higher forces for ,his glory4 ,now1 my friends1 the higher institutions of learning in the midst of these great original forces all about us in the new communities are that product of inventive ingenuity which turns these forces to account1 giving them direction and transmuting them from the lower to the higher4 ,the local church cannot do it4 ,individual labor cannot do it4 ,the institution of higher learning is the only thing that can accomplish it4 ,more than this1 not only does this higher institution planted in new fields turn to account the force which already existed1 but it has the power of enlarging this force and creating new forces1 and after creating1 transmuting them and turning them to the account of the kingdom of ,god4 ,the institutions of this ,association in the ,south not only create an enthusiasm and desire for learning1 but they are turning the money acquired and the material prosperity attained by our colored brethren into those higher influences which effect the upbuilding of the kingdom of ,god4 ,that is what these colleges are for4 ,it is impossible now to amplify the thought1 but ,i wish in connection with it to name three particulars4 ,and first1 it is entirely possible for us1 in heeding the ,scripture admonition to preach the gospel to every creature1 to neglect those great and overwhelming forces in new communities which are sweeping the youth away4 ,i read in a ,providence paper last ,saturday evening that there are no infidel books published in the ,welsh language4 ,i know those ,welsh people well4 ,this statement may be true2 but meanwhile1 forces outside of them which they cannot control are threatening to sweep their youth away into the gulf of materialism and atheism in the new communities4 ,the children speak ,english1 and are thus led into the outside drift4 ,the second point is this3 ,it is wise to put our directive force where the power is4 ,it is utterly impossible to build institutions in the ,state of ,massachusetts or in ,new ,england that will answer the purpose for the ,south4 ,the children of this world build their water-wheel where their water-power is4 ,the children of light sometimes build their water-wheel where the power is not1 or where it has already been appropriated4 ,we must put healthy1 strong institutions into the ,south4 ,they are worth even more than the local churches we are planting4 ,they stand in need of support4 ,the local churches give them character4 ,third1 ,i think we have need of a larger ,christian sagacity in the distribution of funds for this purpose4 ,in my appeals for educational work1 no one has heard me say ,i would have less money given for older institutions1 ,i believe there can be a wiser distribution of money with reference to the kingdom of ,god4 ,any one looking upon this field will tell you that one dollar put into an institution of learning in the ,southern field--conditions being as they are1 these forces being yet undirected--one dollar in one of these institutions will often accomplish more than one hundred in an old one4 ,i have told people frequently--and ,i believe those who have studied this problem will assent to it--that one dollar for a ,christian college in the ,western field1 will accomplish more than ten put into some of the older institutions4 ,what ,i say then is1 that if we wish to have a larger sagacity1 if we wish to give our money with wiser heed to results1 we shall put more into those institutions on the ,southern field which are to determine what the ,south shall be2 we shall put more into those institutions in the great ,mississippi valley which are to determine what the ,mississippi valley shall be1 and which1 two generations hence1 are to determine what this continent shall be4 ,let not less be given to the old2 but1 my friends1 the most economical giving is the money given to your higher institutions in the ,south and in all our 7#a74 ,it has peculiar power and fitness to elevate the despised races4 ,first1 because we know so little of the capacity of either of these races4 ,in the geographies of twenty years ago the centre of ,africa was marked ,unexplored ,region4 ,the race that dwells there is still unexplored4 ,when we say ,persia1 ,greece1 ,rome1 the word represents not only a people but an idea4 ,each of these nations has flashed forth before the world and left its mark upon it4 ,but of ,africa we have heard nothing2 it has not displayed itself or impressed itself upon the world outside4 ,it has given nothing of civilization or religion4 ,and so of the ,indians4 ,of their predecessors we learn much from the mounds they built2 of themselves we know little4 ,we know more of the former from their graves1 than of the latter from their lives4 ,the ,chinese we have called our antipodes1 in spirit as well as locality1 and let them go at that1 with this meager record1 that grown men spend their lives in carving toys and find their pleasure in smoking opium4 ,to lift up these races we want that power which conquered the conquerors of ,rome1 and put the destiny of the world into the hands of the ,anglo-,saxon4 ,we want the power which shall convince them of manhood within and ,god above1 and bring them face to face with the ,almighty4 7#b74 ,we want ,puritanism brought to these despised races1 because there is in them such a tendency to degradation4 ,this is seen abundantly in all of them2 let us speak of it especially among the ,freedmen4 ,the ,association has no feelings of mere romance in doing its work4 ,those who have been engaged in it for years look with open eyes on depths of degradation which you at a distance can hardly comprehend4 ,in the cities1 the colored people are influenced by the civilization around them4 ,in some cases they have made excellent progress by themselves1 as in the old ,dorchester settlement in ,liberty ,county1 ,georgia4 ,but as a rule1 when left alone1 there is a terrible settling downwards4 ,it is seen in ,louisiana on remote sugar plantations1 where their cabins1 if before the war like cattle-pens1 are now pest-houses2 in ,mississippi swamps1 where their worship is fetichism and their lives savagery4 ,slavery was a great leveler2 it leveled many down1 but it also leveled many up in physical condition4 ,i sat one memorable week1 day after day1 in company with teachers who had spent eight or ten years in hard work with these people4 ,as they gave their accounts of those outside their influence1 it seemed like standing on a jutting crag at night1 an inky sky above1 an inky sea below1 and wave after wave rolling in1 black1 with scarce a gleam of brightness4 ,no ecclesiastical polity1 no scenic shows1 can do anything for a people sinking like this4 ,we need a faith which grasps with intense reality the fact that sin leads to remediless destruction2 that it needed the ,son of ,god to die for its victims1 and believes the ,son of ,god did die for them2 and with these convictions is not afraid of any darkness ,he bids it enlighten1 or any devils ,he bids it cast out4 7#c74 ,we want1 again1 the power of ,puritanism for these despised races1 because it has done so much for them4 ,we heard words of hearty praise this afternoon telling of the success of the work4 ,they told hardly enough4 ,but these efforts should be redoubled4 ,we want more institutions like those at ,atlanta1 ,new ,orleans1 ,charleston1 and the other large ,southern cities1 where high culture and intelligence rule4 ,the scholarship can be compared without fear with similar grades at the ,north4 ,i never heard in our boasted common schools such recitations as ,i have heard from boys as black as the blackest4 ,i know what ,yale and ,harvard and ,dartmouth can show2 but in ,greek and ,latin those colored students can rival their excellence4 ,the culture in morals and manners is at least not inferior1 nor the religious instruction less fruitful4 ,the report from the churches shows as large and as healthy success as we can show here4 ,the young men and women in these institutions have an intense longing to be at work for the ,master4 ,the desperate condition of their race rests upon them like a pall4 ,god is making them ,his prophets and speaking through them1 and sending redemption4 ,it is ,puritanism which has done this4 ,it seems to have been put upon us to prove what ,christianity can do for these races4 ,our fathers came to this land1 breaking the winter's silence with hymns of lofty cheer4 ,after them came the negro1 with groanings inexpressible and clanking of chains4 ,then the ,chinaman1 famine pressing him4 ,let us not forget that it was the great famine in ,ireland which drove one hundred and fifty thousand emigrants to this country in a single year1 almost as many as had gone out in a decade before2 now1 ten million ,chinese have died of starvation1 and a few seek this land that ,god gave to fugitives4 ,these races1 which have never done anything for themselves1 nor had anything good done for them1 which have been the tool1 the victim1 the plaything1 the despair of civilization1 are now brought face to face with us--us1 with our indisputable ,anglo-,saxon conceit1 which cannot bear that others should differ from us1 backed by ,northern grit and ,western energy1 stirred by a solemn conviction that we have a destiny to fulfil in this matter1 inspired by that command to preach ,christ to dying men4 ,puritanism1 as embodied in this ,congregational ,missionary ,association1 proposes ,christian work may be strengthened4 ,twelve churches were represented by pastor or delegate1 including the church at ,orangeburg1 ,s4 ,c4 ,three of these have white pastors from the ,north2 the others have efficient colored ministers who have been trained in the schools of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,roy1 of ,atlanta1 whom your own great ,state has recently given to the ,south for a ,field ,superintendent of the work among the colored people1 preached a most effective opening sermon from the text1 ,jesus ,christ1 the same yesterday1 to-day and forever4 ,we thank the ,illinois churches for their gift1 for ,dr4 ,roy is evidently the right man in the right place4 ,he is cordially and gladly welcomed1 and will have a great work to do in looking after the present scattered flocks1 and gathering new churches4 ,the ,conference was well officered by ,rev4 ,r4 ,f4 ,markham1 of ,savannah1 as ,moderator1 and ,rev4 ,j4 ,h4 ,h4 ,sengstacke1 of ,woodville1 as ,secretary2 ,rev4 ,s4 ,e4 ,lathrop1 the newly-arrived pastor at ,macon1 was also chosen ,statistical ,secretary and ,treasurer1 with authority to publish the ,minutes and other documents4 ,the ,macon church is a beautiful brick building1 tastefully arranged1 upon a commanding site which overlooks most of the city4 ,the attendance of ,macon citizens was not so large as it would have been but for a very exciting municipal election which was going on at the time1 absorbing the enthusiasm of most of the people4 ,but the ,congregational church1 with the ,lewis ,high ,school in its basement1 taught by two experienced lady teachers from ,new ,york1 has gained the respect of the whole community by the steadiness of its members and the sweet reasonableness of its doctrines as handed down from past generations4 ,to those unaccustomed to deal with the ,freedmen1 one very noticeable thing was their intelligence1 and especially their knowledge of parliamentary law as applied to deliberative bodies4 ,they are thoroughly posted in all the intricate mazes of motions1 amendments1 substitutes and privileged questions1 and everything must be done in a strictly parliamentary way4 ,this is1 perhaps1 a characteristic of the whole ,southern people1 white or black4 ,they have also a good knowledge of ,congregational usages1 and seem to be much attached to the ways of the ,pilgrim ,fathers4 ,one evening was devoted to a temperance meeting 7a subject1 by the way1 which needs great attention in the ,south71 with several earnest and spirited addresses by both white and colored speakers4 ,the vice of drunkenness is very prevalent in this part of the country1 both in the churches and out of them4 ,the fire-water has its charms for the red1 white and black races alike4 ,even among the when the free schools were closed4 ,i visited and witnessed the closing exercises of these schools1 and was pleased with the progress made by some of them4 ,the great scarcity of proper books and education of their children1 and quite a number something toward procuring proper books for their children4 ,the school is prospering1 the people are taking a proper view of things1 and the workers gained from conversation with our returned student teachers4 ,one of our girls1 a born lady1 delicate and refined1 who had always lived comfortably in the city1 went out to teach for the first time this summer4 ,her first boarding-place was a log house of three rooms and twenty occupants4 ,each room contained a separate family4 ,there were no windows or openings in the logs except the chimney and door1 and of course the door must be shut at night to keep out animals4 ,the father and mother have a bed2 the children 7boys and girls7 all nestle together on a quilt spread on the floor1 in the corner1 sleeping in the same filthy garments they have worn through the day4 ,think of trying to sleep as she had to during the intense heat of last summer in a close room with twelve persons4 ,the how quickly her fine voice was recognized and appreciated by the musical intuitions of even that rude people4 ,they came long distances to beg her to sing one more time1 and often remarked1 ,i'm shore street preferable at mid-day4 ,the frost has killed the elm and mulberry leaves1 but the magnolia1 mock orange and fig leaves are green as ever1 and the hawthorn hedges and roses make the door-yards look almost like ,june4 ,their geraniums they are protecting with temporary board coverings1 letting them remain out all winter4 ,our ,mission ,home is a large and commodious mansion built by a slave-holder1 whose fortunes went down with the lost cause1 and it was purchased by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,our school1 near by1 has a building which compares favorably with some of ,i have been here two years and a half1 and have not been called to attend a funeral of any member of our church4 ,there have been but three deaths in the families1 and two of them were yellow fever cases during my absence4 ,some of our members were sick1 but none of them died4 ,there were many1 many cases of yellow fever among the colored people that were not reported4 ,they held1 perhaps1 a superstitious notion--the doctors would say so1 at least--that if they went to the hospital they would surely die2 so they doctored themselves with herbs1 and so far as ,i can learn not one so treated died4 ,we are in the midst of the trying season for these poor people4 ,the cold weather is coming on2 but thanks to the kind women of ,yarmouth1 ,mass41 and ,skowhegan1 ,me41 we have a good stock of benefits that had come to the whole country1 white and black1 ,north and ,south--for we are one1 and what really benefits one section1 benefits all--from the emancipation of the slaves4 #a4 ,his first point related to the honor of the ,american name4 ,for almost a century poets have sung and orators boasted of the national honor4 ,the declaration of independence1 that all men are born free and equal1 has been flaunted abroad as the pennant of the nation1 while millions of our people were being born1 living and dying in the worst form of slavery the world has ever known4 ,in all those long years the nation lived a stupendous lie4 ,never was the declaration of independence true until ,abraham ,lincoln made it so the first day of ,january1 #ahfc4 ,it is a great benefit to the nation to be true to its professions2 to have this great blot wiped out4 #b4 ,by the emancipation of the slaves1 #e1jjj1jjj pairs of hands were added to the wealth and defences of the nation--no small gift4 ,we read of a time when a nation shall be born at once4 ,it has come4 ,what if the ex-slave has had to be nursed6 ,all babes are nursed4 ,is not the babe a blessing to the household8 ,even its very helplessness is a blessing1 educating the finest sensibilities of humanity4 ,if the babe born ,january #ast1 #ahfc1 is nurtured aright1 ,god alone can measure the benefits to the nation4 #c4 ,by the emancipation of the slave1 a system of education was introduced to the ,south that insures a lasting blessing upon the whole people4 ,the intelligence of a large portion of the white population before the war was not above that of the slave4 ,if the slave had not been made free1 there is no reason to suppose the condition of these poor whites would have been changed4 ,now a glance over the broad territory of these ,states1 where school-houses have sprung up like magic1 shows the immense advantage that has come to white and black alike2 and with the increase of intelligence will come increase of prosperity and happiness to the whole nation4 ,with the emancipation of the slave1 the common-school system has been forced upon the ,south1 until now1 having tasted of its sweetness1 we hope it is never to be abolished4 #d4 ,another benefit resulting from the emancipation of the slave is the moral elevation of the people4 ,ah6 we know too well the vices that sheltered themselves under that most accursed of all traffics4 ,the slave was but a chattel2 his level was the ox2 he was like any other beast of burden1 and his morals were not above his position4 ,great complaint is now made of the moral condition of the colored man4 ,but low as it may be1 every intelligent observer can perceive a vast improvement over the condition before the war4 ,the wonder is that one virtuous1 or truthful1 or honest person could come out of #bej years of moral degradation like that of ,american slavery4 ,but these dark days are gone4 ,now there is incentive enough for us to rise4 ,the opportunity is before us to show to the world that the vices of the past are due to our education1 and not to the inherent nature of the black man4 ,we have only to recover a lost manhood4 ,we want faith in one
