,revised and ,enlarged ,edition ,since the publication of this small manual of practical ,astrology1 two editions of which have been exhausted1 the attention given to the subject has so far extended as to create an increased demand for a concise work of this nature1 designed for the initial use of students and offered at a price that is within the means of all4 ,it is believed that the revision and enlargement of the present work will render it even more popular than hitherto with beginners4 ,the practical uses of ,astrology are daily more and more recognized and appreciated1 and although some of the higher and later developments of ,astrology in its relation to every-day problems have necessarily been withheld from these pages1 yet it is to be hoped that so much as is here presented of an abstruse and recondite science will enable the student to pursue the subject with increasing assurance and satisfaction1 in which case doubtless he will readily discover for himself1 and without any special pointing on my part1 that ,astrology is primarily and finally a practical and useful study4 ,there are1 of course1 many aspects of this fascinating subject which find no place in this small work1 which deals solely with ,genethliacal ,astrology1 or the doctrine of ,nativities4 ,yet if it be true1 as ,i think to be the case1 that 8the proper study for mankind is man10 then undoubtedly we are right in selecting this phase of ,astrological ,science as that to which the student should first devote himself4 ,when we have thoroughly arrived at an understanding of the complex nature of human character and the primary causes of variety in expression1 when we have seen for ourselves how the many-coloured dome of ,life overarches us of this sublunary world with its kaleidoscopic interplay of forces1 we shall be to some extent better equipped not only to deal with character as we find it1 but also to direct the forces of the human mind along channels which lead to the preservation of our social economy1 and that not by any restrictive measures or harmful suppression of natural passions and powers1 but by conversion of them into forms that are conservative and useful4 ,to apply oneself to the specialization of inherent faculty1 to find the line of least resistance1 and to discover the measure of one's own soul in the universe and the limit to which ambition can safely aspire1 these are things necessary to be known and things that ,astrology makes clear to the mind in the very earliest stages of our study4 ,and apart from the scientific verities to which the science of planetary influence directs us1 there are other not less important and fascinating truths of a purely philosophic nature to which it inevitably impels the mind and which cannot fail to exercise a tremendous influence in the shaping of our thought in regard to the purpose of life4 ,it places the thoughtful student in an entirely new position with regard to many of the deeper problems of existence1 and it is certainly the fact that to those who newly come to its study1 ,astrology is a revelation1 an enlightenment1 and a conviction from which there is no possible or desirable escape4 ,,sepharial4 ,astrology ,introduction ,from the earliest ages of the world's history the subject of ,astrology has excited the interest of1 and exercised a great influence over1 the minds of a certain order of thinking men4 ,the science has never been universal in its acceptance1 though it is safe to say that1 with its countless adherents in the ,east and the ever-increasing number of its advocates in the ,west1 there is no faith which has a more universal application than the belief in the influence of the heavenly bodies over the destinies of human beings4 ,it is not possible within the limits of a small handbook such as this to adequately consider the philosophic paradox which makes of ,freewill in man a 8necessity in play02 but it is obvious that the concept is not altogether unscientific1 seeing that it is customary to speak of the 8free path of vibration0 in chemical atoms while at the same time it is known that these atoms have their restricted characteristics1 modes of motion1 c41 and are all subject to the general laws controlling the bodies of which they form integral parts4 ,let it suffice that if we can trace an actual connectedness between the disposition of the heavenly bodies at the moment of a birth and the known life and character of the individual then born1 and an exact correspondence between the course of events in that life with the changes occurring in the heavens subsequent to the moment of birth1 we shall do well to accept the fact for what it is worth1 and arrange our philosophic notions accordingly4 ,as far back as the year ,b4,c4 #baed1 we find mention of the great importance attaching to the celestial phenomena in the minds of ,chinese rulers4 ,it is recorded in the ,historical ,classic of ,china that at that time the astrologers ,hi and ,ho neglected their duties so that when1 on the #ajth of ,october1 there was a great eclipse of the ,sun at ,peking between seven and nine o'clock in the morning1 the people were wholly unprepared for it1 and 8ran about here and there in the utmost consternation40 ,for this offence ,hi and ,ho were deprived of their offices1 their estates were confiscated and they were driven from the kingdom4 ,among the ,hindus we have the classical writers ,garga1 ,parashara1 and ,mihira1 together with their legions of commentators4 ,the ,assyrian records are full of astrological allusions regarding the influence of planetary conjunctions and stellar positions4 ,the ,greek mythology is nothing but a vast system of cosmographical astrology1 and there is no other history in it than what you may read in the constellations of the heavens and the corresponding evolution of the human race4 ,aristotle made it a part of his philosophy4 ,hipparchus1 ,hippocrates1 ,thales1 ,galenius1 and others subscribed an intelligent belief in its principles4 ,to ,claudius ,ptolemy1 however1 we are indebted for the first concise and scientific statement of its principles and practice1 so far as ,europe is concerned4 ,he wrote the ,tetrabiblos1 or ,four ,books1 and laid the foundations of a true astrological science4 ,julius ,firmicus confirmed ,ptolemy and enlarged upon his observations4 ,the subsequent discovery of the planets ,uranus and ,neptune by ,herschel and ,adams1 widened the field of research and gave to later astrologers the clue to much that hitherto had been imperfectly understood4 ,not that these discoveries overturned the whole system of astrology1 as some have imagined and foolishly stated1 or that they negatived the conclusions drawn from the observed effects of the seven anciently known bodies of the solar system1 but it became possible after a lapse of time to fill in the blank spaces and to account for certain events which had not been traced to the action of any of the already known planets4 ,the discovery of argon did not destroy our conclusions regarding the nature and characteristics of oxygen or hydrogen or nitrogen1 nor give an entirely new meaning to the word 8atmosphere40 ,if even so many as seven new planets should be discovered1 there would yet not be a single paragraph of this book which would need revising4 ,what is known regarding planetary action in human life is known with great certainty1 and the effects of one planet can never be confounded with those of another4 ,incomplete as it must needs be1 it is yet a veritable science both as to its principles and practice4 ,it claims for itself a place among the sciences for the sole reason that it is capable of mathematical demonstration1 and deals only with the observed positions and motions of the heavenly bodies2 and the man who holds to the principia of ,newton1 the solidarity of the solar system1 the interaction of the planetary bodies and their consequent electrostatic effects upon the ,earth1 cannot1 while subject to the air he breathes1 deny the foundation principles of astrology4 ,the application of these principles to the facts of everyday life is solely a matter of prolonged research and tabulation upon an elaborate scale which has been going on for thousands of years in all parts of the world1 so that all the reader has to do is to make his own horoscope and put the science to the test of true or false4 ,the present writer is in a position to know that the study of astrology at the present day is no less sincere than widely spread1 but few care to let their studies be known1 for1 as ,prof4 ,f4 ,max ,mller recently said1 8,so great is the ignorance which confounds a science requiring the highest education1 with that of the ordinary gipsy fortune-teller40 ,that to which the great ,kepler was compelled 8by his unfailing experience of the course of events in harmony with the changes taking place in the heavens10 to subscribe 8an unwilling belief10 the science which was practised and advocated by ,tycho ,brahe under all assaults of fortune and adverse opinion1 the art that arrested the attention of the young ,newton and set him pondering upon the problems of force and matter1 which fascinated the minds of such men as ,francis ,bacon1 ,archbishop ,usher1 ,haley1 ,sir ,george ,witchell1 ,flamstead1 and a host of others1 is to-day the favourite theme of thousands of intelligent minds and bids fair to become a subject of popular inquiry4 ,it is believed that the present work will be of considerable assistance to those who seriously contemplate an initial study of the science of horoscopy1 and although it by no means exhausts what is known on the subject1 yet it will be found accurate and reliable as far as it goes1 and will enable any one of ordinary intelligence to test the claims of ,astrology for himself4 ,this is as much as can be expected in the limits of a small handbook4 ,the literature of the subject is considerable1 and the present writer only takes credit to himself so far as his own wide experience and practice have enabled him to present the subject in a simple and brief manner4 ,contents ,,section ,i ,,the ,,alphabet ,,of ,,the ,,heavens ,,chap4 ,,page ,i4 ,,the ,,planets1 ,,their ,,natures ,,and ,,types #ag ,,ii4 ,,the ,,signs ,,of ,,the ,,zodiac planets are known to astronomers under the following names and symbols3-- ,the ,sun 1 ,moon 1 ,neptune 1 ,uranus 1 ,saturn 1 ,jupiter 1 ,mars 1 ,venus 1 and ,mercury 4 ,neptune revolves around the ,sun in its distant orbit once in about #afe years4 ,uranus completes its orbital revolution in #hd years1 ,jupiter in #ab years1 ,mars in about #ae months1 ,venus in #aa months1 and ,mercury in #ah weeks4 ,if you imagine these bodies to be revolving in a plane around the ,sun and yourself to be standing within the ,sun1 the motions of these bodies will appear almost uniform and always in one direction4 ,were the orbits of the planets circular and the ,sun holding the centre of the circle1 their motions would be constant1 that is to say1 always in the same direction and at the same rate4 ,but the orbits are elliptical1 and the ,sun holds a position in one of the foci of each ellipse4 ,consequently the planets are at times further from the ,sun than at others1 and they are then said to be in their aphelion1 the opposite point of the orbit where they are nearest to the ,sun being called the perihelion4 ,when at aphelion the planets move slower1 and when at perihelion they move quicker than at the mean distance4 ,astronomers employ an imaginary circular orbit for the planets1 in which they move at an uniform rate of velocity1 which is called the mean motion4 ,this is subject to an equation depending on the position of the planet in its orbit1 and it determines the difference between the imaginary planet and the true planet4 ,the equation itself depends on the eccentricity of the orbit1 that is to say1 its relation to a circle drawn around the same focal centre4 ,the ,earth follows the same laws as all other bodies of the same system4 ,but if we imagine the ,earth to be stationary in space and the centre around which the planets revolve1 their motions present several irregularities4 ,mercury and ,venus will then appear to revolve around the ,sun while the ,sun revolves around the ,earth1 sometimes being between the ,earth and the ,sun1 which is called an ,inferior conjunction1 sometimes on the further side of the ,sun away from the ,earth1 as at their ,superior conjunction2 and again1 at other times to the right or left of the ,sun1 in ,east or ,west elongation4 ,the other planets1 having orbits greater than that of the ,earth1 will appear to revolve around it at constantly varying distances and velocities4 ,at certain points in their orbits they will appear to remain stationary in the same part of the ,zodiac4 ,the annexed illustration will assist the lay reader perhaps4 ,the body ,m is ,mercury when at ,inferior conjunction with the ,sun1 as seen from the ,earth4 ,the letter ,v is the planet ,venus at ,superior conjunction with the ,sun4 ,the points ,w and ,e are the points of greatest elongation ,west and ,east1 and the letter ,s shows the points in the orbit at which those bodies appear to be stationary when viewed from the ,earth1 at ,g4 ,as seen from the ,earth1 ,venus would appear to be direct and ,mercury retrograde4 ,illustration ,astrologically we regard the ,earth as the passive subject of planetary influence1 and we have therefore to regard it as the centre of the field of activity4 ,if we were making a horoscope for an inhabitant of the planet ,mars1 we should make ,mars the centre of the system4 ,the planets' positions are therefore taken as from the centre of the ,earth 7,geocentric71 and not as from the centre of the ,sun 7,heliocentric74 ,an astrological ,ephemeris of the planets' motions is employed for this purpose 7see ,sect4 ,,ii41 chap1 i471 and there are #dhj1jjj of these sold to astrologers or students of astrology every year1 from which fact it is possible to draw one's own conclusions as to the state of ,astrology in the ,west4 ,these figures1 of course1 do not include the millions of almanac readers nor the ,oriental students1 who prepare their own ephemerides4 ,knowing the simple natures of the several planets we are able to arrive at an estimate of their effects when acting in combination4 ,neptune acts upon the mind of man to produce a highly-strung nervous temperament1 often allied to either insanity or genius2 neurosis1 aphasia1 c4 ,it produces complications in business and an involved state of affairs generally4 ,disposes to fraud1 double-dealing1 and irresponsible actions4 ,in the body it produces waste of tissue and a consumptive habit4 ,uranus gives an eccentric mind1 waywardness1 originality1 inventiveness4 ,acting on the affairs of business1 it produces sudden and unexpected developments1 irregularities1 rapid rise and fall1 instability1 unexpected turns of good and bad fortune4 ,in the body it has relation to the nervous system1 and its diseases are those of paralysis1 lesion1 and nervous derangement4 ,saturn produces a thoughtful1 sober1 ponderable mind2 steadfastness1 patience1 and endurance2 disposition to routine and habit1 method4 ,in financial affairs it gives steady results commensurate with labour1 success that is slow but sure1 durance1 hardships1 privations4 ,in the body it is related to the osseous system1 and its effects are brought about by obstructions1 chills1 and inhibition of function4 ,jupiter gives joviality1 optimism1 bountifulness1 generosity1 a rich and fruitful mind4 ,it renders the subject fortunate in his affairs1 giving success and frequently opulence4 ,with this planet strong in the horoscope a person never 8goes under40 ,in the body it has relation to the arterial process1 and its diseases are those which arise from surfeit1 congestion1 and plethora4 ,mars confers a sense of freedom1 much ambition and executive ability1 frankness1 truthfulness1 and scorn of consequence4 ,it renders the mind forceful and militant1 stimulates to new projects and enterprises1 and in the body of man has relation to the muscular system4 ,its diseases are those which arise from inflammatory action in the tissues4 ,venus confers poesy1 good taste1 fine feeling1 artistic powers1 gentleness1 docility1 dalliance1 and love of pleasure4 ,it renders the affairs pleasant and prosperous1 giving profit from both artistic and rustic pursuits4 ,next to ,jupiter it is the most benefic of the planets in its action on mankind4 ,in the body it has relation to the venous system1 and its diseases are those which arise from impurities of the blood1 scorbutic and zymotic diseases1 eczema1 smallpox1 measles1 c4 ,mercury renders its subjects active1 versatile1 apt and business-like1 disposed to much commerce1 whether of the mind or the market1 and eager in the pursuit of knowledge2 alert1 and well-informed4 ,its influence on affairs of life is variable1 for it always translates the nature of that planet to which at birth it is in nearest aspect 7,sect4 ,i41 chap4 iv474 ,in the body it is related to the sensorium1 the centres of sensation1 and reflexly controls the nerves of action4 ,the ,moon gives gracefulness of manner and suavity of speech1 softness and adaptability of nature1 variableness1 love of change1 romance1 and adventure2 disposed to exploration and voyaging4 ,in the body it corresponds to the glandular system1 and its diseases are those incidental to the lymphatic glands and vascular tissue4 ,the ,sun renders its subjects magnanimous1 noble1 proud1 despising all mean and sordid actions2 loyal1 truthful1 and fearless4 ,it produces honours and the favour of dignitaries1 and renders the subject fortunate in the control of his affairs4 ,in the body it controls the vital principle4 ,the types of persons produced by the various planets are very distinct1 the chief features of each being as follows3-- ,neptune--,thin1 nervous-looking people1 blue eyes1 soft1 silky hair1 thin and usually long faces1 frequently wearing a strained or startled look4 ,uranus--,tall1 wiry1 and energetic figures1 alert1 muscular1 spasmodic1 and with some touch of eccentricity4 ,saturn--,dark and lean people1 small1 deep-set eyes1 heavy brows1 long noses1 thin lips1 and sallow complexions4 ,jupiter--,full bodied1 robust men1 large and expressive blue or brown eyes1 arched brows1 high foreheads1 oval faces1 and rich brown hair4 ,mars--,strong1 muscular1 and athletic bodies1 ruddy complexion1 grey eyes1 prominent brows1 sloping forehead1 and usually some mark or scar in the face4 ,sun--,fresh1 clear complexion1 blue or grey eyes1 round head1 broad shoulders1 strong jaws1 upright and dignified carriage4 ,venus--,elegant1 well-groomed1 and often dainty-looking people1 with blue or soft brown eyes1 brown hair1 fine teeth and finger-nails1 small feet and short fleshy hands4 ,mercury--,thin1 tall1 and active bodies1 alert appearance1 small and usually dark eyes2 wide1 thin lips1 long arms and slender hands4 ,frequently great talkers and quick walkers4 ,moon--,rather short and fleshy people1 with pale face1 soft limpid eyes1 sad brown or medium coloured hair1 fine teeth1 broad chest1 and a tendency to a squat fulness of body4 ,the forehead is usually high and broad4 ,look at the people as they pass you in the street4 ,bring them if possible under one or other of these types4 ,consider what has been said of the planets' natures1 and you have a ready key to something of their character and destiny4 ,,chapter ,,ii ,,the ,,signs ,,of ,,the ,,zodiac ,the ,zodiac is an imaginary belt of the ,heavens through which the ,sun and planets move in their apparent revolutions round the ,earth4 ,it extends from #bc #bg above the plane of the ,equator to the same distance below it1 being bounded by the ,tropic of ,cancer on the ,north and by that of ,capricorn on the ,south4 ,the ,ecliptic is a circle transecting this belt at an angle of #bc #bg to the plane of the ,equator4 ,the points where it cuts the ,equator are called the ,equinoxes4 ,the ,ecliptic is divided into twelve equal sections1 counting from the ,vernal ,equinox4 ,these are called the ,signs of the ,zodiac4 ,each sign occupies #cj degrees of the circle4 ,their names and symbols are as follows3-- #a4 ,aries1 the fruitful4 ,aries governs the ,east1 ,cancer the ,north1 ,libra the ,west1 and ,capricornus the ,south4 ,the ,double-bodied signs are ,gemini1 ,sagittarius1 and ,pisces4 ,it is important that all these classifications should be learned1 as they form an essential part of the doctrine of ,astrology1 and are frequently employed in the reading of a ,horoscope4 ,the types of people under the various signs should also be known as intimately as possible4 ,a person is said to be 8under0 a sign--that is to say1 under its influence1 when that sign is rising in the ,east at the moment of birth4 ,you will recognise these types among your friends and associates3-- ,aries produces a person of lean body1 long neck1 high cheek-bones1 grey eyes1 sandy or sad brown hair1 which is either wiry and straight or crisp and curling4 ,the front teeth are usually large and prominent4 ,taurus gives a full1 thick-set body1 strong neck and shoulders1 full brown eyes1 dark curling hair1 full lips1 rather wide mouth1 and round1 bullet-shaped head4 ,the hands and feet are short and fleshy4 ,gemini produces a tall1 active1 and upright body1 long arms and legs1 wide1 thin lips1 straight and often retrouss nose1 lank1 straight black hair1 rather wide shoulders1 and thin body4 ,cancer denotes a rather short1 squat figure1 full lymphatic body1 pale complexion1 round face1 broad forehead1 sad brown hair1 large aqueous eyes1 full chest1 short1 fleshy hands and feet4 ,leo renders its subjects tall1 broad shouldered1 fine and manly figures1 small round head1 fair complexion1 blue or grey eyes1 flaxen or fair brown hair1 upright and fearless carriage4 ,virgo renders the body thin and active1 the head well developed1 the forehead broad1 hair light brown and waving off the forehead1 eyes blue1 shoulders broad1 the type being of an intellectual or artistic form4 ,libra gives an elegant body1 well-developed limbs1 fine oval face1 straight nose1 fine blue eyes 7sometimes deep brown71 flaxen or chestnut hair1 beautiful complexion4 ,the highest types of beauty are to be found under this sign4 ,scorpio gives a short1 thick-set1 and powerful figure1 broad1 deep chest1 dusky or sallow complexion1 dark curling or crisp hair1 strong and rather bowed legs4 ,this is a very virile and robust type4 ,sagittarius gives a tall person1 well-made figure1 elegant limbs1 oval and rather long face1 brown or chestnut hair growing off the forehead1 fine expressive eyes1 rather prominent and of a dark brown or blue colour1 long nose1 slightly aquiline4 ,capricornus produces a slight and rather ill-formed person1 long and scraggy neck1 prominent features1 narrow chin1 weak and frequently decrepit limbs1 weak chest and sloping shoulders4 ,frequently the figure is wiry and suggestive of considerable powers of endurance4 ,the brows are prominent1 the nose long1 and the face thin and hard-set4 ,aquarius contributes the finest types of beauty next to ,libra4 ,the ,saxon type is dominant4 ,a tall figure1 well formed and rounded1 fair complexion and blue eyes1 flaxen hair1 straight features1 well-developed chin1 and fine1 clear forehead4 ,pisces produces one of rather short stature1 short limbs1 lymphatic body1 pale complexion1 limpid blue eyes1 black or brown eyes1 short nose1 full lips1 round face1 small hands and feet4 ,the short signs are ,taurus1 ,cancer1 ,capricornus1 and ,pisces4 ,the tall signs are ,gemini1 ,leo1 ,sagittarius1 and ,aquarius4 ,the others are of medium height4 ,the planets rising in each sign will always alter the type by impressing their own characteristics on the subject4 ,each sign has a ,ruler1 and the position of the ruler of the rising sign has much to do with the physical conformation1 as if ,taurus be rising and ,venus1 its ruler1 be in ,leo1 the person will be taller and fairer than indicated by ,taurus alone4 ,pure types are very uncommon4 ,the rulership of the planets in the signs is as follows3-- ,saturn governs ,aquarius and ,capricornus4 ,jupiter governs ,pisces and ,sagittarius4 ,mars governs ,aries and ,scorpio4 ,venus governs ,taurus and ,libra4 ,mercury governs ,gemini and ,virgo4 ,the ,moon governs ,cancer1 and ,leo is governed by the ,sun4 ,when a planet is found in a sign over which it is said to govern it acts more strongly than usual1 and when in the opposite signs to those it governs it is said to be in its 8fall10 when it is weaker than usual4 ,planets governing opposite signs to one another are said to be 8enemies40 ,such do not produce harmonious and favourable results when acting in conjunction4 ,,chapter ,,iii ,,the ,,celestial ,,houses ,the imaginary circle which passes immediately over your head as you face the ,south is called the ,prime ,vertical4 ,this is divided for astrological purposes into twelve equal divisions called ,houses1 six of which are above the horizon and six below it4 ,they are counted from the ,east ,horizon under the ,earth to the ,west1 and thence through the zenith to the ,east again4 ,the figure in ,section ,,iv41 chapter v41 will make the idea easy of comprehension4 ,each such division or ,house carries its own signification1 and it has been ascertained beyond all doubt or cavil that the ruling of the ,ancients in this matter is altogether reliable1 however empirical it may appear4 ,the ,first ,house governs the personal appearance1 but chiefly the face and head4 ,the ,second ,house rules over finance1 movable effects1 commerce4 ,in the body it governs the neck and throat4 ,the ,third ,house governs short journeys1 letters1 and other means of communication1 near relations or neighbours4 ,in the body it governs the arms and lungs4 ,the ,fourth ,house governs real estate1 the residence1 the produce of the earth1 the mother of the subject1 and the end of life4 ,in the body1 the breasts and thorax4 ,the ,fifth ,house governs progeny1 the sex instincts1 domestic relations1 and social pleasures4 ,in the body1 the back and heart4 ,the ,sixth ,house governs the health1 servants1 and personal comforts of the subject1 clothes1 food1 and other physical requisites1 sanitation1 hygiene4 ,in the body it rules over the abdomen and lower viscera4 ,the ,seventh ,house has dominion over marriage1 contracts1 agreements1 partners1 and matters of exchange4 ,in the body it has relation to the loins and kidneys4 ,the ,eighth ,house rules death1 loss1 legacies and dowries1 and matters appertaining to the deceased4 ,in the body it is related to the excretory system4 ,the ,ninth ,house is said to govern long journeys1 publications1 religious beliefs1 foreign lands1 and legal affairs4 ,in the body it rules the thighs4 ,the ,tenth ,house rules over position1 honour and fame of the subject1 the father1 superiors of all orders4 ,in the body it rules over the knees4 ,the ,eleventh ,house governs friends1 social relations1 societies and companies with which the subject is concerned4 ,in the body it has relation to the legs from calf to ankle4 ,the ,twelfth ,house rules ambushes1 restraints1 privations1 imprisonments1 confinements1 and all limitations of the personal freedom4 ,in the body it rules the ankles and feet4 ,applying these significations to the interpretation of a horoscope it will be seen that if ,mars should be rising at the moment of birth there will be a scar or mark on the face4 ,observations of this sort will frequently assist to determine the time of birth when it is not known4 ,similarly with other planets in the same or other ,houses2 but of this more anon4 ,,chapter ,,iv ,,the ,,astronomical ,,aspects ,aspects are certain angular distances measured on the ,ecliptic1 and they form a fundamental part of astrological science4 ,any planet may be good or bad in its effects on the character and destiny1 according to the aspect that it throws to the chief points of the ,horoscope4 ,the aspects are3 ,the semisquare aspect of #de degrees1 sextile of #fj degrees1 square of #ij degrees1 trine of #abj degrees1 sesquiquadrate of #ace degrees1 and the opposition of #ahj degrees4 ,there is also the conjunction1 when bodies are in the same degree or part of a ,sign4 ,the good aspects are the trine and sextile2 the evil being the semisquare1 square1 sesquiquadrate1 and opposition4 ,the aspect of a planet determines its effects1 whether for good or evil4 ,the conjunction is good with good planets1 such as ,jupiter and ,venus1 and evil with malefic planets such as ,mars and ,saturn4 ,when planets are the same distance ,north or ,south of the ,equator they are in parallel declination 7p4d471 and they then act as if in conjunction4 ,also when planets are in mutual disposition1 that is to say1 occupying one another's signs1 they act as if they were in conjunction4 ,planets in conjunction act according to their simple natures1 but when in aspect1 according to the nature of that aspect4 ,the benefic planets ,jupiter1 ,venus1 ,sun1 ,moon1 and also ,mercury when in good disposition with another planet or in a congenial ,sign1 produce good effects by their conjunctions and by their trine and sextile aspects2 but when in square1 semisquare1 or sesquisquare aspect they are uniformly evil in effect4 ,on the other hand1 the malefic planets ,neptune1 ,uranus1 ,saturn1 and ,mars1 together with ,mercury when ill-disposed or in uncongenial ,signs1 are evil in their effects when in conjunction with the significant points of the horoscope2 also when in evil aspect2 but they nevertheless produce good effects when in good aspect4 ,the ,significators4 ,the more important points of the ,horoscope to which aspect can be thrown are called 8,significators40 ,the general significators in any horoscope are the ,sun1 the ,moon1 the ,midheaven 7the degree which holds the meridian of the horoscope71 and the ,ascendant 7the degree which is rising74 ,but every planet can be a particular significator in its own province1 namely1 in the ,sign which it rules1 and the ,house in which it is found at birth4 ,in a general sense the ,moon is significant of the mother1 female relations1 the personal health and fortunes and the changes incident to these4 ,the ,sun in the same way indicates the father1 male relations1 the vital principle1 and position4 ,mercury is the significator of the mind and intellect1 the faculties generally4 ,venus is significatrix of love affairs1 domestic relations1 pleasures1 and of young female relations1 sisters1 c4 ,mars is significator of enterprises1 strifes1 and young male relations4 ,jupiter is significator of increase and emoluments2 ,saturn of legacies1 inheritance1 and aged persons2 ,uranus of civic and governmental bodies2 ,neptune of voyages and psychic experiences4 ,the chief points to be regarded1 however1 are the ,midheaven1 the ,ascendant1 and the places of the ,sun and ,moon4 ,,section ,,ii ,,the ,,construction ,,of ,a ,,horoscope ,,chapter ,i ,,the ,,ephemeris ,,and ,,its ,,uses ,an ,ephemeris is an almanac of the planetary positions day by day throughout any given year4 ,they are to be obtained at a cost of one shilling per year1 in a convenient form specially adapted to the use of astrologers4 ,in the first column will be found the ,sidereal ,time for the day1 which is the ,sun's ,right ,ascension or distance from the ,vernal ,equinox1 expressed in ,hours1 ,minutes1 and ,seconds1 and equated to ,mean ,time at ,greenwich4 ,by merely adding the time after noon1 or subtracting the hours and minutes before noon1 at which the birth took place1 you will obtain the ,right ,ascension of the ,midheaven at the moment of birth4 ,the use to which this is put will appear in the next chapter4 ,it corresponds to a particular degree of the ,zodiac which is in the ,midheaven at the given time of birth4 ,the next column contains the ,sun's longitude at ,noon for each day4 ,by taking the position on one day from that on the next day1 the motion of the ,sun for #bd hours is obtained1 and a proportion of this for the hour of birth can easily be made4 ,the mean motion of the ,sun per day is #b-a_/b1 or #a degree per day4 ,in another column will be found the ,moon's longitude1 and in adjacent columns its declination and latitude4 ,declination is distance ,north or ,south of the ,equator1 and celestial latitude is distance ,north or ,south of the ,ecliptic4 ,the longitudes of the other bodies are also given for each day at noon4 ,the mean longitudinal progress of the several bodies is as follows3 ,sun1 #b-a_/b per hour1 or #a degree per day2 ,moon1 #cb per hour1 or #ac degrees per day2 ,neptune1 #b per day2 ,uranus1 #c per day2 ,saturn1 about #e per day2 ,jupiter1 about #ab per day2 ,mars1 #de per day1 or about #b per hour2 ,venus1 #gb per day1 or #c per hour2 ,mercury1 #hd per day1 or #c-a_/b per hour4 ,these increments are for direct motion only2 the planets are1 as already explained1 sometimes retrograde and sometimes stationary4 ,the ,horoscope of birth is only concerned with the longitudes of the planets1 but when one or more planets have the same declination ,north or ,south1 they should be noted as being in ,parallel1 for they then act as if they were in conjunction4 ,take in hand1 then1 the ,ephemeris for the year of your birth and read this chapter with it in view4 ,after understanding its construction1 extract the ,sidereal ,time at ,noon for the day of your birth and refer to the next chapter4 ,,chapter ,,ii ,,to ,,erect ,a ,,figure ,,of ,,the ,,heavens ,take the ,sidereal time at noon on the day of birth1 and add to it the hours and minutes after noon at which you were born1 or if before noon1 subtract from it the interval between the birth and noon4 ,this will give the approximate ,right ,ascension of the ,midheaven at birth4 ,thus1 suppose a person to be born on ,may #a1 #ahij1 at #c;h4 #cjm4 p4m4 in ,london-- ,the ,sidereal time1 noon1 ,may #a1 #ahij1 is #b;h4 #cfm4 #bhs4 ,to which add time p4m4 #c #cj #j ,acceleration at #aj per hour #j #j #cd --------------- ,right ,ascension of ,midheaven at ,birth #f;h4 #gm4 #bs4 ,with this ,right ,ascension of the ,midheaven you then refer to ,tables of ,houses for ,london 7see ,chapter ,,iii471 and against this quantity of ,sidereal ,time you will find1 under the column marked #aj1 the sign and degree which corresponds to it1 namely1 the #bnd of ,cancer4 ,this is put at the head of the figure1 and the rest of the signs are placed around the figure in their order as shown in the ,table4 ,only six of the ,houses are given in the ,tables1 because the opposite ,houses will have the same degrees of the opposite signs on them4 ,thus we read against the ,right ,ascension #f;h4 #gm4 #bhs4 the following3-- #aj #aa #ab ,ascen4 #b #c ,cancer #b1 ,leo #h1 ,virgo #h1 ,libra #a4cc1 ,libra #bf1 ,scorp4 #bf4 ,this means that the #bnd degree of ,cancer was on the cusp of the ,tenth ,house 7the ,midheaven7 at the moment of the birth1 ,leo #hth on the cusp of the ,eleventh ,house1 ,virgo #hth on the cusp of the ,twelfth1 ,libra #a4cc on the ,ascendant or ,eastern ,horizon1 and so of the rest4 ,on the cusp of the ,fourth ,house we place ,capricornus #b1 because the ,fourth ,house is opposite the #ajth and the sign ,capricornus is opposite to ,cancer4 ,on the cusp of the ,fifth ,house we place ,aquarius #h1 because the ,fifth ,house is opposite to the ,eleventh1 and ,aquarius is opposite to ,leo4 ,when completed we find the cusps of the ,houses as follows1 opposite to those in the ,tables3-- #d #e #f #g #h #i ,capric4 #b1 ,aquar4 #h1 ,pisces #h1 ,aries #a4cc1 ,aries #bf1 ,taur4 #bf4 ,it is then only necessary to place the planets in the figure1 as explained in the preceding chapter1 and the figure of the ,heavens is complete4 ,to ,draw a ,figure of the ,heavens4 ,take a pair of compasses1 and with a radius1 of about #b-a_/b inches1 describe a circle4 ,within this1 and with a radius of about #b inches1 describe another4 ,with the radius of this latter mark off six equal divisions1 and then equally divide these so as to make twelve4 ,within the figure draw a small circle1 concentric with the others1 to represent the ,earth4 ,from the points of division already obtained draw straight lines to the centre of the figure until they touch the circle of the ,earth4 ,you then have a figure which represents the ,houses of the ,heavens1 being a twelvefold division of the ,prime ,vertical4 ,the lines extending from the outer circles to the ,earth are the cusps of the ,houses 7see fig4 ,section ,,iv41 chap4 #e74 ,the degrees of the ,zodiac which are upon the cusps of the ,houses1 as found in the ,tables opposite a given ,sidereal ,time1 are written over the several cusps in their order between the two outer circles4 ,reference to the ,ephemeris for ,may #a1 #ahij1 shows the ,sun at noon in ,taurus #aa degrees #b minutes4 ,three and a half hours later it will have advanced about #h minutes in longitude1 so that its position will be in ,taurus #aa degrees #aj minutes4 ,this longitude falls in the ,eighth ,house1 and we therefore place the symbol of the ,sun in that division of the ,heavens and place against it the figures #aa4aj1 so that as ,aries #bf is on the cusp of the ,eighth and ,taurus #bf on the cusp of the ,ninth ,house1 the ,sun's position in ,taurus #aa4aj will fall between these cusps1 i4e41 in the ,eighth ,house4 ,the rest of the planets are placed in the figure according to their respective longitudes4 ,,chapter ,,iii ,,the ,,tables ,,of ,,houses ,the ,tables of the ,houses on pp4 #dj1 #da1 are calculated for the latitude of #ea #cb ,north4 ,this will serve for ,london and environs1 and approximately for the ,south of ,england and the ,midlands4 ,tables of ,houses for other latitudes may be obtained through the booksellers1 a useful set of half a dozen different latitudes being sold for one shilling4 ,in order to illustrate the uses to which these ,tables may be put in the solution of astronomical problems1 let us take the ,sun's position in the horoscope for the #ast of ,may1 #ahij1 and find when the ,sun sets on that day on the horizon of ,london4 ,the ,sun is in ,taurus1 #aa degrees1 and it will set when the opposite point of the ,heavens is rising4 ,find under the column marked 8,ascen40 the #aath degree of ,scorpio1 and against it in the column marked 8,sidereal ,time0 you will find #i;h4 #dim4 #is4 ,this will be the ,right ,ascension of the ,midheaven when the ,sun sets on ,london4 ,we have already seen that the ,sidereal ,time at noon on the #ast of ,may was #b;h4 #cgm4 #bhs41 and this1 taken from the former ,sidereal ,time1 gives about #g4ab p4m4 as the time of sunset4 ,now in the example horoscope the birth took place at #c4cj p4m41 and this time1 taken from #g4ab p4m41 gives #c;h4 #dbm4 from birth to sunset4 ,if you multiply this by #ae to turn it into degrees and minutes of the ,equator1 you will obtain #ee #cj1 which are the number of degrees which pass over the ,midheaven from birth until sunset4 ,at the rate of #a degree for every year of life1 this corresponds to #ee-a_/b years of age1 when the subject of this horoscope would come under the adverse influence of the ,sun opposition ,ascendant1 and would suffer some serious ill health of a feverish nature1 incident to the throat 7the part ruled by ,taurus1 the sign in which the ,sun is situate74 ,this is how predictions are made1 but of this more anon4 ,sidereal#aj #aa #ab ,ascen4 #b #c ,sidereal#aj #aa #ab ,ascen4 #b #c ,time4 ,time4 ---------------------------------------- ,midheaven1 under which1 in the ,tables of ,houses1 ,i find the ,ascendant which rules the year4 ,thus in the case of one born on the #ast of ,may at #c4cj p4m4 the #cjth year comes under the when on the horizon ,eastward it is said to 8ascend40 ,the ,midheaven is often called the 8,m4,c40 7,medium ,coeli71 and the opposite point is called the 8,i4,c40 7,imaum ,coeli74 ,they are the points of the ,ecliptic which cut through the meridian of a place at any given time4 ,,chapter ,,iv ,,planetary ,,transits ,in order that prognostications made from the horoscope of birth may be pointed as to time it is necessary to know the positions of the planets for several years in advance4 ,such calculations are easily effected by a knowledge of the periods of the planets--that is to say1 the times in which they return to the same positions about the same time of the year4 ,thus ,uranus returns to its place after a period of #hd years1 ,saturn does so after #ei years1 ,jupiter in #hc years1 ,mars in #gi years1 in all cases almost to the day4 ,mercury also returns in #gi years4 ,but as very few people possess records of the planets' places for these long periods1 the following table of the longitudes of the planets for the next #ab years has been prepared4 ,the positions are given for the #ast of each month1 and the longitudes held by the planets are given in even degrees4 ,these tables are very useful in tracing the transits that occur in connection with the horoscope for the year4 ,thus we have found that by adding the number of degrees corresponding to the age of a person to the ,midheaven at birth1 we obtain the ,progressed ,midheaven1 and in the ,tables of ,houses we may also find the corresponding ,progressed ,ascendant4 ,by adding the same number of degrees to the place of the ,sun at birth we obtain also the ,progressed position of the ,sun4 ---------------------------------------- ----------------- #aije4 #aijf4 ,month4 to the horoscope of ,his ,majesty ,king ,edward ,,vii41 wherein we find the sun situated in the #agth degree of the sign ,scorpio1 which rules the excretory system4 ,in ,may1 #aijb1 there was an ,eclipse of the ,sun in opposition to this position1 and within five weeks of the ,eclipse the ,king was struck down with appendicitis on the eve of the ,coronation ,ceremony4 ,this was foretold in many of the journals devoted to the exposition of ,astrology1 and in ,moore's ,almanac for the month of ,june1 #aijb1 the hieroglyphic clearly pointed to the danger that beset the august ,sovereign4 ,indeed1 ,i was able to say with perfect assurance that the ,coronation would not take place on the date appointed1 and gave the exact date at which the ,king would be struck down with what ,i conceived to be a mortal illness4 ,but fortunately at that time the ,moon was conjoined to ,jupiter in the progress and this saved the life4 ,the ,moon was then setting in the horoscope of birth1 according to the measure of time already given1 namely1 one degree of ,right ,ascension for one year of life1 and ,saturn was on the ,midheaven4 ,the ,eclipse of ,june #f1 #ahec1 was in the ,midheaven at ,cumana on the ,spanish ,main and in five weeks there followed a terrible earthquake which killed #d1jjj people and destroyed all the property4 ,in ,may1 #aija1 there was an ,eclipse on the #hth of ,may which fell in the meridian of ,st4 ,pierre1 ,martinique1 and the same day there was a fearful devastation of the place by the eruption of ,mont ,pele4 ,instances might be multiplied to show that the effects of ,eclipses are of the most striking and effective nature4 ,,section ,,iii ,,how ,,to ,,read ,,the ,,horoscope ,,chapter ,i ,,the ,,planets ,,in ,,the ,,houses ,it is impossible to categorically state the effects which are due to the positions of the planets in the several ,houses1 because very much depends upon the signs they are in and the aspects they have from other planets4 ,the means of judging the effects is very simple1 when once the natures of the planets and the dominion of the several ,houses have been thoroughly digested4 ,thus1 it is first necessary to see in what ,house a planet is situated4 ,then consider the nature of the planet in the following concrete manner3 ,neptune means chaos1 confusion1 deception4 ,uranus1 eccentricity1 originality1 estrangement4 ,saturn1 privation1 hindrance1 denial4 ,jupiter1 affluence1 fruitfulness1 increase4 ,sun1 dignities1 honours4 ,mars1 excess1 impulse1 quarrels4 ,venus1 peace1 happiness1 agreement ,mercury1 commerce1 versatility1 adaptability4 ,moon1 changes1 publicity4 ,now look to the things that are governed by the ,house in which any particular planet is situated at the moment of birth 7,sect4 ,i41 chap4 iii474 ,suppose ,saturn to be found in the #aath ,house4 ,saturn is 8privation0 and the #aath ,house is the domain of 8,friends40 ,hence a paucity of friends1 or such as there may be are evil or unfortunate to the subject4 ,jupiter in the #bnd ,house1 in the same manner1 would signify 8increase0 of 8money and possessions40 ,mars in the #gth would indicate 8quarrels0 with 8partners02 and so on4 ,each planet reflects its own nature upon the affairs governed by the ,house in which it is found at the moment of birth4 ,it will not infrequently happen1 however1 that there are more than one planet in the same ,house4 ,suppose two planets to occupy the same ,house4 ,in such case one may be good 7,jupiter71 and the other evil 7,mars74 ,it is then necessary to take first that which first comes to the horizon or ,midheaven1 that is to say1 the one which is in the earlier part of the ,house1 and next that which follows4 ,thus ,saturn followed by ,jupiter in the #aath ,house1 would signify misfortune by means of advisers and friends1 followed at a later period in the life by some great good through the same source4 ,the degrees which separate the planets will indicate the years which elapse between these changes of fortune4 ,similarly if there be more than two planets in the same ,house2 in such cases you may safely predict many changes in that department of life which the ,house is said to rule4 ,but the fact of a planet being in a ,house is not of itself sufficient evidence from which to make a judgment4 ,the aspects which that planet has must also be considered1 for in this matter ,saturn when throwing a good aspect to any of the ,significators--the ,sun1 ,moon1 ,ascendant or ,midheaven1 and well aspected by other planets1 is to be preferred to ,jupiter when the latter is badly placed and aspected2 for ,jupiter has his own ill effects1 and ,saturn has his good influences4 ,jupiter is only a benefic when acting by conjunction or good aspect with another planet1 and ,saturn is only a malefic when acting by conjunction or evil aspect4 ,these things being duly considered1 it is possible to arrive1 with even brief experience1 at the results that are signified by the planets in the several ,houses4 ,,chapter ,,ii ,,the ,,constitution ,the ,sun is the chief significator of the constitution1 and the aspects he holds to the other planets are to be considered4 ,thus if he be found in good aspect1 or at least not in evil aspect1 to the other planets1 the constitution may be judged as sound4 ,when1 however1 the ,sun is afflicted by some planets and assisted by others1 there will be only a moderate constitution1 and judgment has to be made as to which influence predominates1 the good or evil4 ,when the afflicting planets are angular--that is to say1 in the #ast1 #dth1 #gth1 or #ajth ,houses--the congenital or hereditary tendency to organic disease is by that circumstance so much the stronger4 ,but when the assisting planets are angular1 the predisposition to disease is considerably mitigated1 and in most cases entirely overcome4 ,the predisposition of the body to affections of a constitutional nature is to be judged from the prevalence of evil aspects to the ,sun1 and the parts of the body liable to be affected are judged from the ,signs which are occupied by the afflicting bodies4 ,the various affections due to the several planets have already been cited 7,sect4 ,i41 chap4 i474 ,the ,signs are grouped for purposes of pathological study as follows3-- ,the ,movable ,signs--,aries1 ,cancer1 ,libra1 and ,capricornus--have relation to the head1 stomach1 skin1 kidneys1 liver1 and spine4 ,the ,fixed ,signs--,taurus1 ,leo1 ,scorpio1 and ,aquarius--are related to the throat1 heart1 blood1 and excretory system4 ,the ,common ,signs--,gemini1 ,virgo1 ,sagittarius1 and ,pisces--are related to the lungs1 bowels1 and nervous system4 ,it will also be advisable to read ,sect4 ,i41 chap4 ii41 in order to determine the special points liable to affections1 the nature of the affection being judged solely by the planet which casts the malefic aspect to the ,sun4 ,when the ,sun is found to be afflicted by several planets1 and at the same time there is no assistance from the good aspects or conjunctions of other bodies1 then the constitution is deemed faulty and liable to early disruption4 ,but when there are several planets afflicting and at the same time some benefic influences from others1 it is probable that there will be prolonged disease and physical weakness1 though life will continue4 ,death in infancy occurs when the malefic planets are immediately rising or culminating at the birth in evil aspect to the luminary which at the time may be above the horizon4 ,also when there are malefic planets immediately setting or passing the nadir1 in evil aspect to the luminary below the horizon4 ,but when there are mitigating influences from the good aspects of the benefic planets1 or the luminaries1 the malefic planets will not induce death1 but there will be great difficulty in rearing4 ,,chapter ,,iii ,,health ,,and ,,sickness ,the aspects of the moon are the chief consideration in the matter of sickness4 ,if the ,moon be found to be afflicted by the evil aspects of several planets1 and no assistance be given by the good aspects of others1 then the health will be precarious and frequent spells of illness will result4 ,the ,moon being well aspected and not in any way afflicted1 shows that the health will be well established1 and that there will be immunity from sickness of all sorts4 ,the considerations necessary to be made in this matter are similar to those which have been cited in regard to the ,sun and the constitution1 except that we substitute the ,moon for the ,sun4 ,for1 whereas the ,sun governs the vital power in man1 the ,moon governs the functional powers1 and whereas the ,sun denotes those affections which are congenital or hereditary1 the ,moon denotes such as are brought about by causes after birth4 ,similarly1 the ,sun denotes affections which are incidental to the body1 while the ,moon denotes such as are accidental thereto4 ,these points being borne in mind1 they may be memorised at sight3-- ,,sun4 ,,moon4 ,organic4 ,functional4 ,hereditary4 ,acquired4 ,incidental4 ,accidental4 ,but it should be observed that the constitution may be strong and the health may be at the same time very bad1 or1 on the other hand1 the health may be good and the constitution may be weak4 ,in the first case1 there would be a long life of considerable suffering from ill-health2 and in the second case1 there would be little or no ill-health for some considerable time1 but the constitution would give way and the vital powers become depleted by the first serious illness that occurred4 ,only when the ,sun and ,moon are both unafflicted by evil aspects or conjunctions1 the health and constitution are both good1 and there is every indication of a robust and vigorous life reaching to a ripe old age4 ,when the ,sun and ,moon are both heavily afflicted1 and there is no assistance given by good aspects1 there is every probability of death in infancy1 or before reaching maturity4 ,for reasons which are allied to the connection existing between the constitution and the health1 the good aspect of the ,moon to the ,sun at birth is an excellent augury1 for it indicates co-ordination between the organic and functional4 ,where this co-ordination exists there is always considerable power of recuperation1 so that illness is easily overcome and the balance of power restored in the system4 ,malefic planets rising and afflicting either the ,sun or ,moon indicate prolonged ill-health1 and most frequently some permanent hurt to the body4 ,when predisposition to illness is shown in the horoscope1 the particular affection can be determined by the ,sign which the afflicting planets hold4 ,thus if ,saturn afflict the ,moon from ,aries1 you will judge some hurts and obstructions in the head1 chills and colds1 influenza1 coryza1 c4 ,similarly ,mars in ,leo would indicate functional defects of the heart due to accelerated action and overstrain1 such as result from fevers4 ,a good aspect of the planets ,jupiter and ,venus is of material help in counteracting the influence of malefic aspects or evil positions4 ,thus it will be seen that the health may be judged entirely apart from the constitution1 the planets which are in aspect to the ,moon being of first consideration1 and next those which may be rising at the time of birth4 ,,chapter ,,iv ,,how ,,to ,,read ,,character ,,and ,,disposition ,ptolemy says3 8,mercury is the ruler of the rational soul1 the ,moon of the animal soul40 ,by this he would mean1 no doubt1 that ,mercury has relation to the faculty of the mind1 while the ,moon is related to brain function4 ,there are certain attributes of the mind which are distinctive of the human being1 and certain other qualities which are common to man and the lower animals4 ,these latter are under the dominion of the ,moon1 while ,mercury has chief signification of the rational faculties4 ,the position and aspects of the ,moon and ,mercury are therefore to be considered in making judgment of the mental endowments and disposition of the subject4 ,planets that are in conjunction or aspect to either the ,moon or ,mercury will impress their nature strongly on the character and disposition4 ,the natures of the planets have already been recited 7,sect4 ,i41 chap4 i471 and it is therefore only necessary to consider further1 in this connection1 the nature of the aspect that is thrown to the ,mental ,significators by the other bodies4 ,thus the ,sun being in trine to the ,moon will give a proper degree of independence and dignity1 while the square aspect or opposition of the ,sun would indicate an excess of pride1 harmful to the subject in his ordinary relationships4 ,in the same manner1 the good aspect of ,jupiter would show benevolence and regulated philanthropy1 while the opposition or other evil aspect of the same body would indicate extravagance and ostentatious display of charity4 ,the good and bad aspects of the planets may be summed up in a few lines as follows3-- ,,in ,,good ,,aspect4 ,,in ,,evil ,,aspect4 ,neptune--,genius1 inspiration4 ,insanity1 obsession4 ,uranus--,originality1 invention4 ,obstinacy1 eccentricity4 ,saturn--,steadfastness1 fidelity4 ,deceitfulness1 suspicion4 ,jupiter--,benevolence1 joviality4 ,ostentation1 profligacy4 ,mars--,energy1 executiveness4 ,impulse1 destructiveness4 ,sun--,dignity1 independence4 ,vanity1 egotism4 ,venus--,affability1 art4 ,self-indulgence1 disorderliness4 ,mercury--,alertness1 ingenuity4 ,inquisitiveness1 meddling4 ,moon--,grace1 idealism4 ,inconstancy1 awkwardness4 ,the general trend of the disposition and habit of mind is judged by the position of the majority of the planets1 according to the 8,constitution0 of the ,signs they occupy4 ,thus1 the majority of the planets being in-- ,cardinal or ,movable ,signs indicates executive ability1 business aptitude1 pioneer spirit1 ambition1 capability to cut out a line in life for oneself1 and to make headway against difficulties4 ,such persons are usually the foremost in their particular sphere of life1 and are always found in the most progressive movements1 reforms1 c4 ,fixed ,signs--,stability1 patience1 endurance1 method1 caution1 and diplomacy4 ,such persons are apt to become the originators of schools of thought1 policies1 and schemes4 ,they have fixity of purpose1 determination1 independence1 and pivotal stability4 ,they sit still and the world revolves around them4 ,flexed or ,common ,signs--,versatility1 flexibility1 suavity1 adaptability1 and lack of originality4 ,such people usually have too many irons in the fire1 and take in hand more than they can bring to satisfactory conclusion4 ,this is due to their versatility4 ,they have a superficial knowledge of many things1 but lack the persistence to bring that knowledge to practical effect4 ,at the same time their adaptability is the occasion of many successes in life1 and their agreeableness1 sympathy1 and suavity create many friends for them4 ,in the ,wheel of ,life the cardinal signs denote the rim or tyre which is ever on the move1 having the greatest acceleration4 ,the ,common ,signs represent the spokes of the wheel1 uniting the tyre to the nave1 and in that sense representing the power of adaptability4 ,the ,fixed ,signs represent the nave1 which remains quiescent and still1 being useful by that pivotal stability and apparent non-entity4 ,thus1 while the ,sign-groupings of the planets are useful in giving the keynote of the nature and disposition1 the particular faculties and characteristics are to be judged only from the aspects of the planets to the ,moon and ,mercury4 ,further1 it will be noted that those planets which occupy the #crd and #ith ,houses1 and those also which are just rising at the moment of birth1 will strongly impress themselves on the nature1 apart from any aspects they may hold to the ,mental ,rulers4 ,this is on account of the natural relationship of those ,houses to the mind and its means of expression4 ,due attention must be paid to the position and aspects of those planets which are in aspect to the ,mental ,rulers1 for if they be badly placed1 in uncongenial signs1 and themselves badly aspected by other planets1 they will not act with the same directness and force as they otherwise would do4 ,it is of course admitted1 in all astrological inquiries1 that the effects of heredity1 training and association count for something4 ,a man who is generated from a vitiated parentage1 badly nourished and imperfectly trained1 cannot be expected1 even with the best aspects1 to manifest the highest faculties in their fullest or most perfect expressions4 ,i have not the slightest doubt that many a clodpole was born under similar aspects to those which obtained at the birth of ,shakespeare1 ,raphael1 ,newton1 or ,csar4 ,i am not dismayed4 ,non gli astri muovono solamente per ,roma6 ,who shall tell the tale of the world's starved1 neglected1 and submerged genius8 ,we are doing the right thing1 at all events1 in keeping the school-door wide open4 ,but to continue4 ,the inspirational and ardent temperament is indicated by the majority of planets being in ,fiery signs4 ,the mental or intellectual temperament is shown by the majority in ,aerial signs4 ,the psychic or emotional temperament by the majority in ,watery signs1 and the practical or sordid temperament by the majority being in ,earthy signs4 ,the rising sign at birth often impresses itself strongly on the mind of the ,subject1 and its characteristics are those which belong to the planet which governs it1 and the 8elemental0 nature of the sign itself4 ,thus you have the chief keys to the estimate of character in the individual1 and when once the student is convinced by experience of the paramount reliability of this method of character-delineation1 its uses will need no special pointing4 ,mental and ,brain ,disorders4 ,when either the ,moon or ,mercury is afflicted by the malefic planets1 that is to say1 when ,neptune1 ,uranus1 ,saturn1 or ,mars are in conjunction or evil aspect with the mental ,significators1 and there be no relieving aspect from the benefic planets1 ,jupiter1 ,venus1 or the ,sun1 then there is every predisposition to affections of the brain and nervous system4 ,this is the more to be feared when the ,moon or ,mercury is afflicted in the flexed or common signs4 ,this observation has been scientifically established by ,mr4 ,a4 ,g4 ,trent1 in his little work entitled 8,the ,soul and the ,stars10 to which the student is referred for a mass of statistical evidence4 ,,chapter ,v ,,financial ,,prospects ,look to the planets which are in the #bnd ,house1 and the aspects to them4 ,if any planet be therein1 and well aspected by others1 the financial condition will be competent4 ,if a benefic 7,jupiter or ,venus7 be therein1 and free from evil aspects1 the same effect will accrue4 ,but if the benefic in the #bnd should have good aspects from other planets1 then there will be considerable wealth4 ,any planet in the #bnd ,house1 badly aspected1 will produce difficulty in acquiring money1 and if it be a malefic planet which occupies the #bnd ,house under these conditions1 there will be times of stress and even poverty4 ,continual hardship and poverty is shown by malefic planets in the #bnd ,house1 in evil aspect to the ,moon or ,sun2 while at the same time the planets in the #bnd ,house will be severely afflicted by others4 ,saturn in the ,midheaven afflicting the ,sun or ,moon is an indication of reversal of fortune1 and such persons usually attain considerable position in the world and are then depleted of everything4 ,jupiter or ,venus in the #ajth ,house1 and near the meridian1 are signs of good fortune and success in life1 and the same results are due to their rising at birth4 ,in a general manner the aspects to the ,moon in a male horoscope or the ,sun in a female horoscope should be consulted1 and the planets in good aspect thereto will show the means of good fortune1 while those in evil aspect will indicate the sources of loss and hurt1 according to the ,houses the afflicting or assisting planets occupy4 ,thus ,jupiter in good aspect to the ,moon from the #aath ,house shows gain by friends1 advisers1 and co-operative measures1 because the #aath ,house rules these relationships and ,jupiter is the index of increase4 ,similarly1 ,uranus in the #gth ,house would show gain by the marriage partner if in good aspect to the ,moon1 or loss thereby if in evil aspect4 ,mars in the #bnd ,house shows good earning capacity1 because ,mars is an ambitious and industrious planet 7i4e41 it produces such effects in the person71 and the #bnd ,house is the domain of finance4 ,but at the same time it shows extravagance and inability to save money1 for ,mars is impulsive and lacking thrift4 ,the #fth ,house well occupied shows faithful and advantageous servants and employs1 such as will augment the fortunes and do good work for the ,subject4 ,neptune in the #bnd shows complications and an involved state of finance1 and frequently it shows loss by fraud and imposition2 though in good aspect to other planets it shows gain by such nefarious means4 ,uranus indicates many ups and downs of fortune1 sudden and unexpected rises and falls4 ,thus each planet is judged according to its nature and the aspect it throws to the ,moon or ,sun1 while the planets in the #bnd ,house are judged by their own natures and the aspects which they receive4 ,inheritance is shown by a benefic planet in the #eth or #aath ,house in good aspect to ,saturn2 but indirect inheritance can be the result of ,saturn in good aspect to ,jupiter from any part of the figure4 ,legacies are shown by good planets1 or planets well aspected1 in the #hth ,house2 or by ,jupiter in good aspect to ,uranus from any part of the heavens4 ,gain by marriage is shown by benefic planets in the #hth ,house1 because the #hth is #bnd from the #gth1 and the #gth ,house rules over the partner4 ,the potential of each horoscope is capable of being increased by due attention to the sources of gain1 as shown by the position and aspects of the planets in various parts of the heavens2 but chiefly by associating oneself with persons whose horoscopes are in harmony with one's own4 ,thus it happens that individuals are lifted to position and affluence through their association with persons whose horoscopes are in sympathy with theirs4 7,see ,chap4 ,,xi4 of this ,section47 ,the ,sun and ,moon being in good aspect to one another will prevent disaster1 or will always provide a means of restoration of fortunes1 because it is an index of general good fortune and continual support4 ,such persons as have this aspect in their horoscopes need never fear misfortune1 for if they should fall into disasters in one place1 they will always turn up in another with a complete adjustment of their position4 ,but when the ,sun and ,moon are in evil aspect1 and particularly when the malefic planets are in elevation in the heavens1 continual misfortune dogs the footsteps1 and though there be spells of good fortune1 they are brief and attended with troubles4 ,the benefic planets1 ,jupiter1 ,venus1 and ,sun1 being well elevated in the heavens1 that is to say1 in the #ajth or #aath ,houses1 it is a sign of preponderating good fortune4 ,but when the malefics are in elevation the reverse results happen4 ,the ,line of ,least ,resistance4 ,it is a law in ,nature that the line of least resistance is that of greatest progress4 ,the lightning flash does not come straight to earth1 but zigzag by the line of least resistance4 ,the great rivers do not come by a direct course to the ocean1 but by many turns and backward reaches1 because they follow the path of least resistance4 ,when one comes to take account of the years of human life that are spent in the vain endeavour to achieve the impossible1 the lessons of ,nature are worth reciting4 ,but what is impossible to one man is facile to another1 and the greatest economy of effort is therefore to be secured by proper regard to suitability of occupation and direction of effort4 ,the principles of ,astrology enable us to determine the line of action which at all times will be the most fruitful of results1 and in the matter of money-making the matter is decided in the following manner3 ,that planet which has a trine or sextile aspect of the ,moon1 and is at the same time elevated above the malefic planets1 especially if it be itself assisted by the good aspects of other planets1 receives first consideration4 ,the ,house it is in will indicate the source of benefit1 but the ,sign it is in will show the means through which it will come4 ,thus if ,uranus should be in the ,midheaven1 in trine aspect to the ,moon1 and itself receiving a good aspect from either the ,sun1 ,jupiter1 or ,venus1 it will indicate gain through governmental bodies1 authorities1 and persons of high rank4 ,if ,uranus should be in the sign ,cancer1 it would point to matters associated with the ocean1 marine affairs1 or those in which water is the element in chief employ2 as in marine engineering1 shipping1 dock building1 c4 ,but if ,uranus had been in the #aath ,house1 and in the sign ,scorpio1 then the source of gain would be by means of companies1 syndicates1 and associations of a collective nature1 and the sign ,scorpio would show it to be connected with naval defence 7because ,scorpio is a martial and watery sign7 or the utilisation of waste materials1 inflammable oils1 c41 or by systems of drainage1 which represent the excretory system of a town4 ,by looking chiefly to the nature of the planet concerned1 and that of the sign it occupies1 a good artist will readily describe the particular line which is to be pursued4 ,but here1 as in every other matter upon which judgment is made1 attention must be paid to the character and disposition of the ,subject1 his aptitudes and qualifications1 for it is obviously of little use recommending literature or the law to one whose sole capabilities lie in unintellectual directions4 ,natural aptitude1 supplemented by the necessary training1 are the first considerations1 for without these success in any direction is but ill assured4 ,,chapter ,,vi ,,the ,,position ,,in ,,life ,this is to be judged from the position of the majority of the planets1 but principally from the ,midheaven1 the planets therein and its aspects4 ,thus1 if you find the majority of the planets rising1 that is to say1 in the #ajth1 #aath1 #abth1 #ast1 #bnd1 and #crd ,houses the ,subject will be a candidate for responsibility1 ambitious of honours and position1 and generally independent4 ,if these or the majority of them be well aspected he will become a man of position1 employing others2 or1 if a woman1 will hold an important position in her sphere of life1 and be esteemed in the social world4 ,if the degree on the ,midheaven receives good aspects from the major planets1 the position will be honourable and secure4 ,venus or ,jupiter1 or the ,sun well aspected1 in the ,midheaven1 denotes a superior position1 honours1 and distinction4 ,the same will result if these be rising4 ,when the majority of the planets are above the horizon1 even though they be not rising1 the ,subject will have responsibilities thrust upon him1 even though he should not desire them4 ,if the majority of these planets be well aspected1 he will acquit himself creditably and attain to honours4 ,it is always fortunate for the position that there should be planets exactly on the cusps of either the #bnd1 #crd1 #fth1 #hth1 or #abth ,houses1 for then there will be every opportunity of securing fame and advancement in life4 ,but when any of the malefic planets are found exactly on or nearest to the meridian1 whether above or below the horizon1 there will be loss of position1 reversal1 a sinister fame1 or disgrace4 ,the #ajth ,house represents the fame and honour of a person1 and the #dth ,house represents the end of life and that which militates against the fame and honour4 ,therefore when there are good planets in these places1 the ,subject will meet with rewards and honours commensurate with his efforts2 but when evil planets occupy the meridian1 he will at best sustain his position in life with great difficulty4 ,it is futile for any one to suppose that the position of a benefic planet in the meridian of the horoscope will bring him to fame and elevate him in the world irrespective of his own endeavours4 ,the planets operate on human affairs in terms of human thought and action1 and that by fixed laws2 never adventitiously4 ,that 8the ,gods help those who help themselves0 to the extent that natural laws permit1 is a truth which astrology fully provides for4 ,fitness and fortune are as cause and effect to one another in respect of planetary action in human life4 ,many planets in cardinal signs will dispose a man to seek fame1 and when the ,midheaven of the horoscope is well aspected or there be fortunate planets therein1 he will attain it4 ,cardinal signs on the angles of the horoscope 7the meridian and horizon71 produce fame outlasting death4 ,the same if either of the luminaries be exactly on the equinoxes4 ,venus in the ,midheaven gives social elevation and lifts a person above the sphere of birth4 ,good planets in the #aath show patronage4 ,but when the luminaries are heavily afflicted there will be an inconstant fortune and many reverses1 so that position gained will be lost again4 ,most of the planets under the horizon shows success and position in the latter part of life1 while if they be between the #dth and #gth cusps1 there will be advantages after marriage1 or by means of partnerships4 ,in judging of the means by which the position will be sustained1 respect must be had to the positions of those planets which are in good aspect to the ,midheaven1 or to benefic planets in the ,midheaven1 and if none be so situated1 then those which hold benefic aspect to either the ,sun or ,moon at birth must be taken1 and judgment made according to the nature of the planet and the sign it occupies4 ,preference should always be given to that planet which has the strongest aspect for good4 ,thus if two planets were in trine1 that which is in elevation should be preferred1 especially if it be strengthened by the good aspects of other planets4 ,,chapter ,,vii ,,the ,,choice ,,of ,,occupation ,the enormous waste of force and time entailed by the experimental trip upon which most young men embark at the outset of their career in life1 might be greatly reduced by a proper knowledge of individual aptitude in relation to circumstances4 ,the average boy cannot readily make up his mind as to what occupation he will follow1 because he does not know either enough of his own powers or of the world in which he is called upon to use them4 ,parents are in the same difficulty4 ,they must needs wait to see how a boy will shape out4 ,they study his inclinations to the best of their ability1 but without coming to a definite conclusion any sooner than the boy himself4 ,given a fair education1 such as may fit him for almost anything1 but which specialises him for nothing in particular1 he is put to some desk or bench and there left to his own resources4 ,by a fortunate chance1 he may find himself suited to his post4 ,more frequently he is several years in finding out that he has missed his vocation1 that his inclinations and his work are not in accord1 that he has misapplied his energies for some time1 and that he has made a false start4 ,fortunately circumstanced at birth he may have been equipped by higher education for some distinctive profession1 to which he gains access after the payment of large fees or premiums4 ,the man has a strong dramatic faculty and the stage claims him after all4 ,here is both waste of time and money4 ,astrology1 as a reliable key to character and inclination1 deserves some recognition on the grounds of social economy4 ,the inclinations of the ,subject are judged from the position of the majority of the planets1 for if they should be found in the aerial signs1 ,gemini1 ,libra1 or ,aquarius1 the inclination will be towards mental occupations1 especially science and literature4 ,in fiery signs there is a predisposition to a more robust and active life1 such as is afforded by military service1 travelling1 prospecting1 exploring1 c4 ,in earthy signs the aptitude lies in the direction of agriculture1 experimental science1 surveying1 dealing in real estate1 broking1 c4 ,in watery signs there is special inclination to pursuits connected with the water1 such as sailors1 watermen1 and others2 but frequently to other occupation in which fluids are predominant1 such as publicans1 wine and spirit merchants1 chemists1 and oil merchants4 ,each sign has its special tendency1 and the exact occupation can often be decided thereby1 when regard is had to the planet in closest aspect to the ,sun or ,moon and the sign it occupies4 ,thus ,aries denotes soldiers and pioneers of movements2 ,taurus shows dealers in real estate1 house agents and brokers2 ,gemini1 literary men and writers of all sorts2 ,cancer1 sailors and publicans2 ,leo1 actors and artists2 ,virgo1 clothes dealers and sellers of confectionery and bread2 ,libra1 valuers1 assayers1 money-changers1 and pawnbrokers2 ,scorpio1 naval sailors1 chemists1 dealers in oils and spirits2 ,sagittarius1 explorers1 divines1 lawyers2 ,capricornus1 political agents and ministers of the ,state2 ,aquarius1 electricians1 company promoters1 syndics1 and scientific researchers2 ,pisces1 dealers in fish and sea produce1 warders1 and those connected with places of confinement1 such as prisons and hospitals4 ,taking1 therefore1 the dominant planet and the signs that hold the majority of the planets1 the line along which the ,subject will make the most progress in the world and acquit himself most successfully1 may be readily determined4 ,no person will make a good soldier who has not ,mars as a dominant planet1 nor will he succeed with the public if the ,moon be not elevated and well aspected1 nor become a successful artist1 musician1 or poet if ,venus be not conspicuous in the horoscope4 ,generally the inclination is derived from a consideration of the dominant planet1 and the degree of success attendant upon the occupation is judged from the aspect which that planet throws to the ,sun or ,moon1 and there can be no great advantage from following an inclination which does not promise some measure of success1 as is the case when the dominant planet is in evil aspect to the luminaries4 ,thus it happens that some men follow unprofitable callings1 their judgment being dominated by an inclination adverse to their natural welfare4 ,yet never was good work done in the world without a strong inclination and considerable enthusiasm1 and ,heaven makes its own slaves1 its martyrs1 and its scapegoats4 ,and always1 the following of an inclination means the sacrifice of some of the benefits of life4 8,take what thou wilt1 but pay the price60 is the ,divine mandate1 according to ,emerson4 ,but unquestionably1 the science which enables a man to choose the line of least resistance1 which prevents a youth of intellectual tendencies from wasting the best years of his life in drudgery at the desk or bench1 is worth a little study4 8,hitch your waggon to a star10 is good advice if only we hitch it to the right one4 ,,chapter ,,viii ,,marriage ,,circumstances ,the question as to how1 when1 and where marriage will take place is an all-absorbing one to the majority of men and women1 and no less important than interesting4 ,astrology has made it possible to answer these questions categorically and with particular precision and verity4 ,the conditions of connubial life are judged 7in a male horoscope7 from the condition of the ,moon and ,venus1 and 7in a female horoscope7 from that of the ,sun and ,mars4 ,the planet to which the luminary first forms an aspect after birth 7that which it 8applies0 to7 denotes the marriage partner4 ,if the aspect be good there will be agreement and the choice of a partner will be fortunate4 ,but if the aspect be evil1 there will be trouble after marriage4 ,the nature of the planet to which the luminary forms its aspect after birth ought also to be considered1 for if it be that the luminary applies by a good aspect to a benefic planet1 or to one that is well-placed and aspected1 then there will be considerable happiness and fortune in marriage4 ,on the other hand1 if both the aspect and the planet be evil--as if the ,moon were applying to the opposition of ,saturn or ,uranus or ,mars--then the fate in marriage will be extremely unhappy and disagreements will be frequent and even permanent4 ,when the aspect and the nature of the planet are at variance1 as when the ,moon has a good aspect to ,saturn1 or a bad aspect to ,jupiter1 there will be a mingled fortune of good and ill in marriage4 ,there is no better sign of happiness and harmony in marriage than a good aspect between the ,sun and ,moon4 ,moreover1 it may happen that the ,moon applies by good aspect to a planet after birth1 and that there is at the same time a malefic body in the #gth ,house4 ,this indicates that there will be agreement in the connubial life1 but that bereavement will soon follow4 ,when the ,moon applies to ,neptune there will be some peculiarity or touch of genius in the partner1 according as ,neptune may be aspected4 ,uranus shows eccentricity and sometimes wilfulness4 ,saturn shows steadiness1 industry2 or jealousy and coldness4 ,jupiter indicates a good nature1 bountiful and honest1 but may be given to excess and extravagance4 ,mars induces industry and practicality1 but it gives a strong temper and considerable independence4 ,the ,sun shows dignity and loyalty1 but may indicate ostentation and foolish pride4 ,venus denotes peacefulness and a genial1 refined nature1 but its perversion brings indifference1 neglect and disorderliness4 ,mercury denotes an active and energetic nature1 but may produce a busybody and meddler4 ,everything depends on the aspect which the significant luminary throws to the planet it applies to1 for if the aspect be good it will indicate the better qualities of that planet2 but if evil1 then there is frequently the unfortunate consequence of choosing a partner in whom the perverted qualities of the planet are predominant4 ,good planets in the #gth ,house indicate a good partner1 but when at the same time the aspect of the luminary is evil1 it will denote a good marriage1 followed by bereavement4 ,marriage to a widow 7or widower7 occurs when ,mars and ,saturn are the planets concerned in the indications1 as if ,mars be in the #gth ,house and in aspect to ,saturn1 or if the ,moon apply to ,mars when aspected by ,saturn1 or when one of them is in the #eth ,house and the other in the #gth4 ,love affairs before marriage are indicated by the #eth ,house1 the planets therein and their aspects1 and in a general sense by ,venus in a male horoscope and ,mars in a female horoscope4 ,thus if ,venus 7or ,mars7 be afflicted by ,saturn or ,uranus there will be disappointment in the early affections4 ,uranus in aspect to ,venus gives romantic attachments and much influence over the other sex4 ,neptune in aspect shows idealism1 and when afflicting ,venus it produces chaos and entanglement1 danger of seduction4 ,mars afflicting ,venus gives ardour and impulse4 ,more than one ,marriage is indicated when the luminary is in aspect to more than one planet in a double-bodied sign1 e4g41 ,gemini1 ,sagittarius1 or ,pisces4 ,or1 if the luminary itself be in a double sign and in aspect to any planet other than one which may be in the #gth ,house4 ,also a double sign being on the cusp of the #gth ,house1 and the luminary in a fruitful sign1 ,cancer1 ,scorpio1 or ,pisces1 or in aspect to planets in those signs4 ,all these are signs of more than one marriage during life4 ,signs of separation or divorce are as follows3 ,the luminary applying to the ill aspect of a malefic planet1 ,venus afflicted1 and ,uranus in the #gth ,house or afflicting the ,moon or ,venus4 ,in female horoscopes change the ,significators1 taking the ,sun and ,mars instead of the ,moon and ,venus1 and judge the same4 ,where more than one marriage is shown1 the ruler of the #gth ,house denotes the first partner1 and the planet ruling the sign it occupies is called its 8dispositor0 or 8displacer40 ,this dispositor represents the second partner4 ,the planet to which the significant luminary applies is that which is taken to describe the partner1 according to the sign it is in4 ,but if this planet be retrograde1 i4e41 going backwards in the zodiac by apparent motion1 then it only represents an attachment which will be broken off4 ,its dispositor then becomes the significator of the partner4 ,but the ruler of the #gth ,house is taken for the condition and fortunes of the partner1 and if it be afflicted or badly placed and weak in the horoscope1 then the marriage will be ill-assorted1 unfortunate1 and full of dissatisfaction4 ,the contrary is the case when the significant planet is well placed and aspected4 ,the place or circumstances under which the partner will be met may be known from the sign and house occupied by the planet to which the luminary first applies after birth4 ,thus if it be in the #aath ,house1 the partner will be met among friends1 at the house of a friend1 or introduced by a friend4 ,if in the #crd ,house1 then on a short journey or in correspondence2 in the #eth1 at a place of amusement2 in the #ajth1 in the course of business2 and so on1 judgment being made according to the places and circumstances ruled by the ,house occupied by the planet4 ,,chapter ,,ix ,,indications ,,of ,,progeny ,the #eth ,house1 the planets therein and the position and aspects of the ,moon1 have to be considered in this matter4 ,if the #eth ,house be occupied by benefic planets1 or planets well aspected by others1 then the progeny will be a source of satisfaction and credit to the ,subject1 and will be reared to maturity4 ,but the contrary is the case when the #eth ,house is occupied by malefic planets and such as may be heavily afflicted4 ,the ,moon represents the tendency in the male and the capacity in the female1 and when well aspected1 or free from evil aspects and well placed1 then there will be good fortune in connection with the progeny4 ,when ,uranus afflicts a planet in the #eth ,house1 there will be some premature births1 and generally it will be observed that when planets are opposed from the #aath and #eth ,houses1 or malefic planets occupy those houses1 there is trouble through the progeny1 and usually the loss of one or more during infancy is to be feared4 ,as to the number of children1 no empirical rules exist for the judgment of this matter1 which necessarily is a difficult one owing to the fact that we have no means of comparing the horoscopes of man and wife1 but the nature of the sign on the cusp of the #eth ,house is usually to be depended upon for an approximation4 ,thus ,aries1 ,leo1 and ,capricornus give small families4 ,taurus1 ,cancer1 ,virgo1 ,scorpio1 and ,pisces give large families1 and the other signs yield a moderate family4 ,when the ,moon is strong1 angular1 and not afflicted1 the number is increased4 ,twins are born from double-bodied signs occupying the cusp of the #eth ,house1 or planets in the #eth in a double-bodied sign4 ,the condition of each child is known in a general manner from the alternate ,houses1 commencing with the #eth4 ,thus the first child is 7in a male horoscope7 ruled by the #eth ,house1 and planets therein2 the second child by the #gth ,house2 the third by the #ith ,house1 and so on4 ,in a female horoscope the first child is ruled by the #dth ,house2 the second by the #fth ,house1 and so on4 ,thus if it be found that there is probability of loss of some of the progeny1 the children most liable to affliction may be known by this method2 for the ,houses which contain the malefic planets1 or the afflicted planets1 correspond to the afflicted progeny4 ,illustrious children are born to the ,subject when the ruler of the #eth ,house is in elevation and well aspected1 and in a congenial sign4 ,but if the ruler of the #eth ,house be badly placed and aspected and in a sign of debility1 i4e41 opposite to one over which it rules1 then the progeny are ill-equipped for the battle of life1 either mentally or morally4 ,the particular qualities and fortunes of the progeny can only be known from their individual horoscopes4 ,when malefic planets hold the #abth ,house in a female horoscope1 there will be danger in confinement2 and the same happens if either of the luminaries1 but particularly the ,moon1 be afflicted in the #eth ,house4 ,,chapter ,x ,,voyages ,,and ,,journeys ,the indications of short journeys1 inland and around the coast1 are to be judged from the #crd ,house and the planets therein4 ,if a movable sign be on the cusp of the #crd ,house1 or planets in a movable sign occupy the #crd ,house1 then there will be much travelling and many short journeys to and fro4 ,the aspects to these planets in the #crd will indicate whether such journeys will be mainly successful or not4 ,when there are no aspects to the planet or planets in the #crd ,house the fortune of short journeys is to be judged from the nature of the planet in the #crd1 as if ,jupiter1 they will be fortunate and lucrative2 but if ,saturn1 unfortunate and subject to many hindrances and delays4 ,when malefic planets are afflicted in the #crd ,house1 or malefic planets in the #crd throw evil aspects to the ,sun or ,moon1 then there will be dangers and accidents4 ,watery signs on the cusp of the #crd ,house1 or planets in watery signs in the #crd1 indicate cruising and yachting1 short journeys by water around the coast4 ,if the ,moon be in good aspect to these planets1 then there will be safety in passage2 but if afflicted by the planets in the #crd there will be danger of collision1 capsizing1 c41 according to the nature of the planet in the #crd ,house4 ,long voyages are to be judged in exactly similar manner from the #ith ,house1 the planets therein and their aspects4 ,the #dth ,house indicates the place of birth1 and if this ,house hold a benefic planet1 or either the ,sun or ,moon1 well aspected1 then there is fortune in the place of birth1 and journeys should only be undertaken when they are without doubt fortunate in their issues and admit of a return to the native place4 ,when1 however1 the #dth ,house is occupied by evil planets or planets heavily afflicted1 it will be advisable to remove from the place of birth and seek fortune in more propitious localities4 ,in this matter the choice is made by reference to that planet which holds the greatest power for good in the horoscope of birth1 and the quarter of the ,heavens which it occupies will indicate the direction1 as from the place of birth1 to which the ,subject should repair4 ,thus1 if between the ,east horizon and the meridian1 ,south-east2 between the meridian and the ,west horizon1 ,south-west2 and so of the rest4 ,the points of the compass follow the cardinal points of the ,heavens1 the ,midheaven being ,south2 the ,nadir1 ,north2 the ,ascendant1 ,east2 and the ,descendant1 ,west4 ,if a malefic planet is rising or setting at birth it is advisable to fix the place of residence so much to the ,eastward of the birthplace as will suffice to bring the malefic planets out of the angles of the horoscope4 ,the same if malefic planets occupy the #ajth or #dth ,houses4 ,on the contrary1 if benefic planets are in the #crd and #ith ,houses the ,subject should move ,westward so as to bring the benefic influences into the #ajth and #dth ,houses4 ,when benefic planets or planets well aspected occupy the angles of the figure at birth the ,subject should not travel far1 nor reside long away from the place of birth4 ,indications of many voyages are as follows3 ,many planets in watery signs1 ,cancer1 ,scorpio1 and ,pisces1 and also in the sign ,virgo4 ,when the majority of the planets are in cardinal and flexed signs1 ,aries1 ,gemini1 ,cancer1 ,virgo1 ,libra1 ,sagittarius1 ,capricornus1 and ,pisces1 there will be many changes and journeys4 ,also if the ,sun1 ,moon1 ,mars1 and ,mercury are in either the #crd1 #ith1 #abth1 or #fth ,houses1 there will be many journeys and long explorations in foreign countries4 ,when planets are afflicted in watery signs there will be danger in voyages1 and if the ,moon or ,sun be afflicted in ,virgo there will be submersion due to wreck4 ,also1 when there are planets1 especially malefics1 in ,scorpio1 ,leo1 ,taurus1 and ,aquarius1 afflicted by the aspects of other planets1 or themselves afflicting the ,sun or ,moon1 then there is danger of drowning4 ,when the signs of voyaging are propitious1 and especially when the indications in the #dth ,house are not so1 then removal from the place of birth to some other permanent centre of activity will be advisable4 ,but when good planets or planets well aspected are either rising or in the #dth ,house1 the ,subject should remain in his native place1 and in the end his patience will be justified4 ,,chapter ,,xi ,,of ,,friends ,,and ,,enemies ,the general harmony of the horoscope consists in the positions and aspects of the planets and their relations with the luminaries4 ,when this is conspicuous there will be many friends and supporters1 and the associations of the ,subject will be pleasant and profitable4 ,but when the horoscope is fraught with evil aspects and angular positions of the malefics there will be much strife and many enmities4 ,in a particular sense the friends and associations of the ,subject are to be known from the #aath ,house and the planets therein4 ,for if there be a benefic planet in the #aath1 especially if in good aspect to either of the luminaries1 there will be many friends and adherents4 ,similarly1 the enemies of the ,subject are known from the #gth ,house1 and secret enemies from the #abth4 ,malefic planets therein1 especially in evil aspect to the ,sun or ,moon1 shows many opponents4 ,neptune in any malefic aspect to the ,sun or ,moon shows danger of deceit and treachery being practised upon the ,subject1 and if violent testimonies concur from the ill aspects of ,mars or ,uranus he will be in danger of an ambush4 ,saturn in the #gth or #abth shows long feuds and implacable enmities4 ,uranus therein shows litigation and heckling of creditors4 ,mars therein is an index of violence and passionate hatred4 ,mercury therein shows much scandal and many petty annoyances4 ,now observe the places of the malefic planets and the ,houses wherein they are situated4 ,take the date when the ,sun is in the same longitude as any of these malefic planets1 which will be the same in any year1 and this will be the birthday of persons who are to be avoided as likely to bring mischief into the life4 ,supposing1 for instance1 that ,saturn is found at birth in the #ajth ,house1 in the #acth degree of the sign ,aquarius4 ,reference to the ,ephemeris 7,sect4 ,,ii41 chap4 i47 will show that the ,sun is in ,aquarius #ac on the #ast and #bnd ,february4 ,hence it would be unfortunate for the ,subject to serve any man who was born between the #bhth ,january and the #crd ,february in any year4 ,also1 if ,uranus were in ,leo #bc in the #gth ,house he should not go into partnership or marriage with anybody born on or near the #aeth ,august in any year4 ,take now the places of the benefic planets1 and also the place of the ,moon1 and find the corresponding ,solar dates1 for these will be the birth dates of such persons as should be cultivated and drawn into close association for mutual benefit4 ,observe also the trines and sextiles of the benefic planets and of the ,moon1 and the squares and oppositions of the malefics1 for these will operate in a minor degree in a similar manner as already indicated4 ,a comparison of the horoscopes of persons1 whether kings or plebeians1 with those of others who have wrought great good or evil in their lives1 will immediately establish this observation4 ,indeed there is nothing more dependable in the whole range of scientific observation than this sympathy and antipathy of horoscopes and their corresponding results4 ,it is an argument for the claim of its advocates that ,astrology should be regarded in the light of a science1 for if the planets act not at all upon the dispositions and tendencies of men their squares and oppositions in two separate horoscopes would have no signification4 ,let those who are unhappily mated compare their horoscopes and they will find the signs of discord to which reference has been made above4 ,on the other hand1 let any man who has been lifted to wealth1 fame1 or position by the patronage of another compare his horoscope with that of his benefactor1 and it will be found that the benefic planets in the latter hold the places of the ,sun1 ,moon1 ,midheaven1 or ,ascendant in his own4 ,this frequently accounts for the fact that men with comparatively unfortunate horoscopes are sometimes found in positions of influence and in the enjoyment of considerable fortune4 ,the complex fabric of life has its warp and woof wherein many coloured threads are woven together for the completing of the grand design1 and the great loom of life has its wheels within wheels which only the ,great ,artificer can understand and regulate4 ,we here below1 subjects all of interplanetary action1 must content ourselves with the design as revealed to us in the history of mankind1 or we must seek to understand the purpose of life1 its motif1 the complex laws which operate to bring about the unfoldment of the great plan1 and thence to prognosticate that which hereafter shall be revealed to the commonplace observer4 ,,chapter ,,xii ,,the ,,end ,,of ,,life ,the end of life is judged from the planets occupying the #hth and #dth ,houses1 for the #hth denotes ,death1 and the #dth denotes the final resting-place of man4 ,when benefic planets1 or the ,luminaries well aspected1 occupy these ,houses1 you may judge that the end will be peaceful1 normal1 and that death will take place in the midst of congenial and even exceptionally agreeable surroundings4 ,when1 however1 the malefic planets hold these ,houses1 or afflict the luminaries therein1 you may judge greater stress and privation4 ,uranus in the #hth ,house denotes a sudden death1 and the same result is observed when the ,luminaries therein are afflicted by ,uranus4 ,neptune in the #hth denotes danger of trance1 coma1 and simulated death1 and when this position is observed it is necessary that all the signs of mortification should be present before interment is effected4 ,saturn produces death by privation and obstructions1 by chills and colds4 ,mars induces death by fevers and inflammatory action1 and frequently by hmorrhage4 ,planets in ,fixed signs in the #hth ,house show death from heart or throat affections1 affections of the excretory system and the blood4 ,in ,cardinal signs1 the head1 stomach1 kidneys1 or skin are the seats of the fatal disease4 ,in ,flexed signs1 the lungs1 bowels1 and nervous system become fatally affected4 ,violent or unnatural deaths are shown when either of the luminaries is simultaneously afflicted by the evil aspects of more than one of the malefic planets1 or when both luminaries are separately afflicted by the malefic aspects of malefic planets1 ,neptune1 ,uranus1 ,saturn1 or ,mars4 ,when these testimonies occur1 it will be found that ,neptune produces death by assassination1 ,uranus by sudden catastrophes1 explosions1 hurts by electricity and machinery1 ,saturn by blows and falls1 and ,mars by cuts1 burns1 scalds1 and effusion of blood4 ,particular judgment is drawn from the nature of the signs in which the significant planets are placed4 ,thus ,saturn in ,watery signs would produce drowning2 in ,taurus1 strangling or decapitation2 in ,aries by the blow of a truncheon1 c4 ,similarly1 ,uranus in ,gemini would produce accidents on short journeys1 railway collisions1 bicycle or motor accidents1 and the like effects4 ,it is impossible to cite all the effects due to the several planets in the different signs1 but if the simple natures of the planets1 signs and ,houses are thoroughly understood1 a combination of their significations will readily lead to an appreciation of exact effects4 ,if ,i say that a certain fluid is ,h,,so1 any one having a knowledge of elementary chemistry will know that it is sulphuric acid1 and similarly1 if ,i say that a certain horoscope contains ,saturn in ,cancer in the #crd1 which is astrologically expressed #c1 any one who has read the first pages of this book with attention will be able to say3 ,let the ,subject beware of short journeys by water6 ,it is all chemistry of a kind4 ,when the #dth ,house contains benefic planets1 or planets that throw good aspects to the luminaries1 there will be peace and comfort in old age1 or in the end of life whensoever it may be determined4 ,neptune therein shows retirement and sequestration1 and when afflicting the luminaries or itself afflicted1 it denotes death in an asylum1 hospital1 or other place of detention4 ,uranus in the #dth1 in similar conditions1 denotes a sudden and remarkable death4 ,saturn similarly placed and aspected shows death in exile1 privation or great trouble4 ,mars in the #dth ,house afflicting the luminaries or itself afflicted by other adverse planets1 denotes a violent death by gunshot or wound and in the midst of strife1 or on the field of battle4 ,before any catastrophic death be predicted1 it should be carefully decided whether or not the death is compassed with uncommon and violent indications1 not that one need have fear of the mere going out or coming into the world1 but there is some choice of gates1 and rather than affright the weak-minded with a sinister judgment1 it is better to leave them to find their own way4 ,,section ,,iv ,,the ,,stars ,,in ,,their ,,courses ,,chapter ,i ,,the ,,time-,,measure ,the planets1 in their motions after birth1 come into certain relations with the planets in the horoscope of birth1 and also form aspects among themselves owing to the diversities of their motions in the ,zodiac4 ,in ,astrological science there are two separate means of calculating the time of events1 but both methods consist of bringing the body of one planet to the body or aspect of another1 which process is called 8,directing10 and the arc described by the moving body is called an 8,arc of ,direction40 ,the first of these methods is the discovery of ,claudius ,ptolemy1 the famous mathematician and geographer1 the author of the ,syntaxis1 as set forth in his work the ,tetrabiblos1 or ,four ,books on the influence of the ,stars4 ,this method had the support and confirmation of the great ,kepler4 ,it has respect to the rising1 setting1 and meridian passage of the planets after birth1 whereby they are brought to the places or aspects of the planets in the ,radix 7the ,root71 which is the horoscope of birth4 ,the limits and nature of this work do not permit of a thorough exposition of this method1 which entails some little knowledge of spherical trigonometry1 but the reader who desires to perfect himself therein is referred to the author's work1 entitled 8,prognostic ,astronomy40 ,a facile application of the method is here given1 by which any one may1 by the aid of the ,tables of ,houses1 make certain of the more important calculations by rule of thumb1 and predict thence the times of remarkable events4 ,the principle involved is this3 ,the number of degrees which pass over the meridian between the moment of birth and the rising or culminating of a planet1 will equal the number of years which must elapse from birth until the influence of that planet becomes dominant4 ,thus1 if ,jupiter at birth is coming to the meridian1 that is to say1 if it be in the #ajth1 #aath1 or #abth ,house1 count the number of degrees between the meridian and ,jupiter1 and in so many years from the time of birth there will be an access of good fortune4 ,similarly1 if ,saturn or other of the malefic planets be coming to the meridian1 the number of degrees between it and the ,midheaven will indicate the age at which troubles will abound4 ,also1 when the planets have passed the meridian1 the measure is made in the same way1 by bringing the ,midheaven to the place of the planet1 counting the degrees between the planet and ,midheaven for the number of years at which it will operate4 ,but the same and other planets may be directed to the horizon1 by taking the ,table of ,houses for the latitude of the birthplace 7,sect4 ,i41 chap4 iii47 and finding therein under the column marked 8,ascen40 7,ascendant7 the longitude held by any of the planets4 ,observe then what degree is on the ,midheaven in the column marked #aj 7#ajth ,house71 and count the number of degrees between this ,midheaven and the ,midheaven at birth4 ,the result will give the age at which the effects of such planets will be experienced4 ,thus1 for a person born in or near ,liverpool or in the same latitude1 suppose the ,midheaven at birth to be in ,scorpio #j1 and ,saturn to be in the #bnd ,house in ,aquarius #h degrees4 ,i wish to bring ,saturn to the horizon4 ,in the ,table of ,houses ,i find that ,aquarius #h is on the ,ascendant when ,sagittarius #i is on the ,midheaven1 and ,i therefore count from ,scorpio #j to ,sagittarius #i4 ,this gives the age of #ci years1 and as ,saturn is in the #bnd ,house at birth1 ,i say that at #ci years of age the ,subject would experience financial disaster1 and because ,saturn comes then to the ,ascendant1 ,i also say there would be serious illness and depression of spirits4 ,when planets are setting at birth they are brought to the opposition of the ,ascendant in a similar manner1 only the opposite point of the zodiac must be found in the ,tables under the ,ascendant4 ,thus1 if ,mars were in the #gth ,house at birth in the #aath degree of ,cancer1 ,i find the opposite point 7,capricornus #aa7 under the column of the ,ascendant1 and ,i note that ,scorpio #ai is then on the ,midheaven1 so that from ,scorpio #j to ,scorpio #ai gives #ai years1 at which age the ,subject would have a serious illness due to inflammatory action in the stomach and probably produced by overwork and worry1 as indicated by the sign ,cancer and the planet ,mars1 or if there be indications of an accident1 then an accident by scalding with hot water or acids would be predicted4 ,planets are brought to the opposition of the ,midheaven by counting the degrees which intervene between the longitude on the lower meridian at birth and that held by the planet4 ,in all such directions the conjunctions of benefic planets are advantageous when directed to the ,midheaven or ,ascendant1 and the conjunctions of the malefics are indicated of periods of bad fortune4 ,the oppositions are uniformly evil1 whether the planet involved in the direction be a benefic or malefic4 7,sect4 ,i41 chap4 iv47 ,these are the directions of the planets to the two ,significators1 the ,midheaven and ,ascendant4 ,the ,midheaven appertains to honours and credit1 while the ,ascendant has relation to the personal and bodily welfare and the general fortunes4 ,to direct the ,midheaven or ,ascendant to the other aspects of the planets1 such as the sextile1 trine1 semisquare or square1 it is only necessary to note the degrees in which these aspects fall and bring them to the ,midheaven or ,ascendant as if the body of the planet were itself there1 and in the manner already indicated4 ,the ,sun is directed after birth by its motion in the zodiac1 which can be found in the ,ephemeris for the year of birth1 and the aspects it forms to the planets in the horoscope and in the daily progress should be tabulated4 ,in most ,ephemerides they are already calculated1 so that the labour is considerably lightened4 ,each day after birth will represent one year of life1 the mean motion of the ,sun being about #a degree per day4 ,all that is necessary1 therefore1 is to count the number of days from birth to the date when the ,sun forms an aspect1 and that will give the age at which the planet aspected will produce its effects4 ,as the ,sun goes through the zodiac the other bodies make progress along with it1 in which course they form aspects to the ,midheaven1 ,ascendant1 the ,sun and ,moon in the horoscope of birth4 ,these are called 8,secondary0 directions1 and in connection with the ,sun's aspects after birth1 constituted the system in use among the ,arabian astrologers4 ,minor periods of good and bad fortune1 subsidiary to the above periodic influences1 are taken from the ,moon's progress after birth1 in which one day equals one year of life1 and two hours equal one month4 ,these directions of the ,moon afford a monthly prognosis of the course of events1 and are useful in the conduct of minor affairs in life4 ,when they are contrary to the general trend and import of the periodic directions made to the ,midheaven1 ,ascendant and ,sun1 they act indifferently1 and frequently produce only passing benefits or annoyances2 but when they are in agreement with the ,primary ,directions cited above1 then they accentuate and define the nature and time of events4 ,as if the ,primaries be good and the ,lunar directions evil1 then there will be a predominance of good fortune with some current disturbances2 but both being good there will be abundant success and satisfaction2 while if the ,primaries be evil and the ,lunar directions good1 the latter will serve only to moderate the effects for the time being of the ,primary evil indications4 ,an intelligent apercu of the principles of directing will greatly enhance the value of any prognostications made from the horoscope of birth1 as it will enable the student to select those periods in the life when the effects due to any planet are most likely to eventuate4 ,thus1 if ,saturn be in the #bnd ,house at birth1 it may be said that there would follow some periods of great financial stress1 and the rising of ,saturn by direction after birth would show the time when one1 at all events1 of such periods would be experienced4 ,and here is the great fact upon which astrologers the world over are prepared to stand or fall4 ,if the planets have no effect in the lives of men1 their directions to the angles of the horoscope can have no effect2 but never was it found that a man had evil fortunes at the period when the planet ,jupiter was directed to the ,midheaven or ,ascendant1 or anything but bad fortune when ,saturn was similarly directed4 ,the fact is there1 and we cannot get away from it4 ,the only question is as to how far we can intelligently carry our investigations beyond that point1 and intelligibly convey our discoveries to the world by their application to the affairs of daily life4 ,the reader may judge for himself from a perusal of these pages4 ,the directions being calculated and tabulated in order of their occurrence1 the time and general nature of the influences operating in successive periods of the life will stand revealed4 ,the particular nature of the events indicated by the several directions may be known from 7a7 the ,house in which the directed planet is situated2 7b7 the ,sign it occupies2 and 7c7 the aspect it forms1 considered in relation to the nature of the planet4 ,for example3 ,if ,uranus at birth were in the #ith ,house and the sign ,gemini1 its direction to the ,midheaven would be the index of litigation in connection with writings1 publications1 or means of transit2 because the #ith ,house1 among other things1 has relation to litigation and legal affairs1 and ,gemini 7the #crd ,house sign7 to communications1 writings1 c41 while ,uranus denotes sudden and unexpected events1 ruptures1 alienations1 and complexities4 ,so if ,saturn were in the #fth ,house in the sign ,aquarius1 its direction to the opposition of the ,ascendant would indicate chills to the blood1 anemia1 c41 constituting a serious illness with probability of low fever2 because the #fth ,house rules sickness1 and ,aquarius rules the blood1 while ,saturn is the cause of chills1 paucity1 and impediments4 ,thus the time and nature of events may be known with great certainty4 ,,chapter ,,ii ,,the ,,effects ,,of ,,transits ,among the number of important indicators to which ,astrologers refer in making a forecast of concurrent events1 there are the transits of the planets over the places of the ,significators at birth1 the positions of ,eclipses1 and those of the lunations4 ,the first of these chronocrators depends upon the revolutions of the planets in their orbits4 ,each planet has a period in which it completes its revolution in the heavens1 in the course of which it passes the places of the ,sun1 ,moon1 ,midheaven1 and ,ascendant of the horoscope4 ,this passage over the radical ,significators is technically termed its 8transit10 and it will be found that such transits afford a very precise and reliable source of prognostication1 for the time of a planet's transit is known in advance of its occurrence 7see ,sect4 ,,ii41 chap4 iv471 and the effects of such transit are in exact terms of the nature of the planet concerned4 ,it is only necessary to add that the ,midheaven and the ,sun have relation to the position and honour of the ,subject1 while the ,moon and ,ascendant have relation to the personal health and general fortunes4 ,the ,sun and ,midheaven also signify the father1 and the ,moon has general signification of the mother4 ,venus signifies domestic and love affairs1 the affections and sentiments2 while ,mercury signifies the mental disposition4 ,so ,uranus in transit over the place of ,venus will give a love affair1 a romantic attachment4 ,mars over the place of ,venus will engender passionate love4 ,saturn over ,venus will give disappointment or bereavement2 and ,neptune thereover will bring entanglements and complications1 with danger of being led astray4 ,saturn over ,mercury will produce melancholy and many errors of judgment4 ,mars over the same planet will excite the mind and dispose to impulse and unreasoning anger1 quarrels and disputation4 ,uranus over ,mercury will render the mind wayward and headstrong1 disposed to erratic courses and egotistic methods4 ,neptune passing the place of ,mercury produces deceits1 treacheries1 and apprehension of impending evil1 a sense of espionage and ambush4 ,it involves the mind in tortuous and complicated schemes1 and disposes to secrecy and wariness4 ,the transits of the major planets are of chief significance1 and their effects are rendered more weighty and lasting when at the time of transit they are retrograde in the zodiac2 while their stationary positions on the places of the ,significators have almost the same power as ,primary ,directions4 ,of ,eclipses4 ,an ,eclipse of the ,sun or ,moon falling on the place of any ,significator in the horoscope of birth is of a sinister import1 and cannot be too seriously considered4 ,falling on the ,ascendant or the ,moon they affect the health and general fortunes very seriously1 and only a series of subsequent good directions can avail to restore the ,subject to his normal condition4 ,on the ,midheaven or the ,sun1 the honour and fortunes may both be affected1 and in the same serious degree4 ,the ,eclipses falling on the places of the other planets will produce effects in accord with the nature of those planets and the ,houses they occupy4 ,to have any appreciable effect1 the ,eclipses must be within two degrees of any of the radical positions1 or of their opposition aspects4 ,of ,lunations4 ,the ,lunations recur in the same part of the ,ecliptic every nineteen years4 ,considered in relation to the current indications they afford the means of a monthly forecast of events4 ,thus1 if the lunation for the month falls on the place of ,jupiter in the horoscope of birth1 it will produce good effects in that department of life which is governed by the ,house in which ,jupiter is situated2 as if in the #aath1 through friends2 in the #dth1 through property or rental2 in the #fth1 through servants and health2 in the #hth1 through a financial colleague1 c4 ,the effects of ,lunations are subsidiary to the current ,lunar directions1 and these in turn are subsidiary to the transits1 and the transits to the ,primary ,directions4 ,by this it is not meant that they are inoperative1 nor that they fail to indicate the events of the month1 but their power and degree of influence is subject to the greater influence of superior causes4 ,and as a general observation it may be affirmed that the less frequently any celestial position occurs in a horoscope1 the greater is its influence4 ,this fact gives to primary directions their great influence in the life1 for they can only occur once in a lifetime2 and for the same reason ,eclipses have a major significance1 for the same ,eclipse only recurs after an interval of #fdi years4 ,the transits of ,neptune1 of ,uranus1 of ,saturn and ,jupiter and ,mars follow in their order of frequency4 ,neptune has a revolution of about #afe years1 ,uranus #hd years1 ,saturn #cj years1 ,jupiter #ab years1 and ,mars #a-a_/d years4 ,major effects must not therefore be referred to inferior causes1 and minor effects must not be referred to superior causes4 ,in universal or even national cataclysms1 individual fortunes are submerged4 ,,chapter ,,iii ,,how ,,to ,,summarise ,a ,,horoscope ,before leaving the exposition of this subject1 it may be of advantage to the reader if ,i give some idea of the method to be pursued in the complete handling of a horoscope4 ,first1 then1 erect the figure of birth1 taking care to use the ,ephemeris of the year of birth1 and also the correct ,table of ,houses for the latitude of the place of birth4 ,next proceed to attempt a description of the chief personal traits of the ,subject1 following in succession with a well-considered judgment on the constitution1 hereditary tendencies1 the health and pathological predispositions1 the mental traits and disposition1 considering these latter in relation to the state of health indicated4 ,then pass to a consideration of the environing conditions of life2 the financial condition and outlook2 the position in life2 the occupation2 prospects and conditions of marriage2 of progeny4 ,judge next concerning voyages and journeys4 ,finish with a statement regarding the predominance of friends or enemies1 and select dates by ,solar positions1 as already instructed4 ,in cases where it is not objected to1 an approximation may be made to the time and nature of death4 ,throughout the whole of this judgment1 the periods when these predicted effects will come into force should be made by reference to the rising1 setting1 and meridian passage of the planets1 the solar aspects1 and transits4 ,care should be taken to weigh justly and impartially the evidence set before you in the figure of the heavens for birth4 ,major importance should be given to those planets which are in angles1 and those which are in elevation1 for the nearer a planet may be to the ,midheaven1 the greater is its influence for good or ill1 according to its nature and aspect4 ,read what you see1 not what you imagine should be the destiny of an individual4 ,if you are in complete ignorance of his person1 position1 and environment1 so much the better4 ,if you follow carefully the various rules which are contained in this book1 you may at first make some errors of judgment1 but as you become familiar with the task1 even these errors will become few and far between1 and in the end the language of the horoscope will become so intelligible and clear that it will interpret itself1 and the whole trend and potentiality for good or ill of any birth-figure will force itself upon you in just the same way as when a man walks into your presence with his character clearly stamped upon his face1 so that you have only to look and know4 ,having become proficient in the judgment of birth-figures1 you will do well to proceed to a closer study of the mathematics of astrology1 making yourself proficient in the various methods of directing1 so that you may at any time refine upon your general prognostics1 and make predictions which are clear1 sharp1 and to the point4 ,undoubtedly there is a modicum of intuitive perception at work in the judgment of any horoscope1 which will enable you to seize upon the small details and exact pointing of any matter1 and this perhaps constitutes the whole difference between the rule of thumb worker and the inspirational reasoning of the intuitive worker4 ,the one exhausts the books and the other embellishes them4 ,it is so with science in every department4 ,the books will take you up to a certain point of proficiency1 and a strict regard for the formul will keep you within the bounds of safety4 ,but if you are ever to make a discovery or become a recognised exponent of any science1 you must be naturally gifted with what is called the 8scientific imagination10 another name for intuition4 ,but at no point does true intuition part company with exact reasoning4 ,there is no lesion4 ,the one is an extension of the other4 ,it is the higher reason1 which argues from the known to the unknown4 ,and the ,astrologer is in this respect as the poet1 8born1 not made40 ,but a moment's reflection will suffice to convince you that the more facile you may become with the book-learning and technique of ,astrology1 the more you will leave the intuition free to act4 ,when a lad is struggling with his multiplication tables1 his appreciation of the binomial theorem or the differential calculus cannot be said to amount to much4 ,and1 in the same way1 a person who is stuffing down the ,alphabet of ,astrology cannot be expected to intuit anything concerning the potential of the ,sun's direction to the quadrature of ,saturn4 ,,chapter ,,iv ,,how ,,to ,,become ,a ,,successful ,,astrologer ,i take it that nobody nowadays can afford to fritter away time in the study of subjects which are not likely to become a source of benefit to himself and others4 ,if there be such people among my readers1 which ,i consider unlikely1 ,i may dismiss them offhand with the remark that they will never become successful astrologers1 for the first word of practical astrology is ,utility4 ,if the science had not its practical application to the affairs of everyday life1 if its principles contained no word of assurance and hope for the myriad toilers of this world1 no word of admonition for the self-indulgent parasites of modern social life1 if1 in short1 it did not make for the betterment of human life and thought1 it would never have attracted the attention of ,aristotle1 ,cicero1 ,galen1 ,claudius ,ptolemy1 ,thales1 and others of the old world1 and such men as ,bacon1 ,cardan1 ,archbishop ,usher1 ,naibod1 ,mercator1 ,ashmole1 ,kenelm ,digby1 ,sir ,christopher ,heydon1 ,dryden1 ,dr4 ,john ,butler1 ,sir ,george ,wharton1 ,vincent ,wing1 ,george ,witchel1 ,tycho ,brahe1 ,kepler1 and ,flamstead of more recent biography4 ,indeed1 in whatever age or country we may elect to make our inquiries concerning ,astrology1 there are to be found a host of intelligent and even illustrious advocates in every department of life and learning4 ,suffice it to say that the modern student of this most ancient of all sciences is at all times in very good company4 ,let it first be understood that there is an object to be attained in the study of ,astrology1 and that the pursuit of it in the gratification of an idle curiosity alone will inevitably entail the waste of time which invariably attaches to idleness of all descriptions1 and we may then profitably consider whether or not the subject is worth the labour which it will demand from the man who has something to do in the world and little enough time in which to do it4 ,these are stressful times1 and we have to be economical in our efforts4 ,we have strength enough to carry us through1 but neither strength enough to thresh the wind nor time enough to fish in puddles4 ,what1 then1 does ,astrology offer to the patient worker1 the man who would become a successful ,astrologer8 ,first and foremost it will enable him to gain an insight into individual motive and character which no other science can possibly afford4 ,it will enable him to know himself1 his own strength and weakness1 and so fit him to deal harmoniously and justly with others4 ,it will enhance his opportunities to the extent that he is able to foresee and make use of all benefic influences operating through his own environment4 ,it will give him timely warning of his approach to the quicksands and pitfalls which occur in his passage through life4 ,he will discern his special physical weaknesses1 and the times of his predisposition to sickness1 the nature thereof1 and the precautions which are necessary4 ,he will know whom to cultivate and whom to avoid1 and in selecting a partner in business or a wife for his home1 he will be guided by a foreknowledge of evils to be avoided and of good things to be gained4 ,he will choose his path in life with the confidence that it is for him the line of least resistance and therefore that of greatest progress4 ,he will not become obsessed by ambitions beyond his power to achieve4 ,he will learn the power of adaptation to environment1 and thereby effect his work in the world with the least possible friction and waste of force4 ,he will know when to make provision against sickness1 accident1 and death4 ,he will not invest capital where interest is not to be gained4 ,he will see the end from the beginning4 ,it may not make him a brilliant success in the world1 but it will assuredly save him from being a failure4 ,he will find causes for inexplicable things1 and his mind will rest content in the knowledge hat while he is working out the highest potentialities of his own horoscope1 the major problems and intricacies of life are not of his making or needful of his solving4 ,and finally1 when his time comes to 8shuffle off this mortal coil10 he will be prepared1 and will know that it is the will of ,heaven1 expressed and determined from the moment of his birth4 ,rightly employed1 ,astrology cannot fail to improve the man who makes of it a serious study1 fitting him to be of greater use to others and of higher service to the race at large4 ,but to become a successful ,astrologer he must study patiently for several years1 testing each statement that is made in the books by reference to his own and several other horoscopes4 ,he must be able to erect a figure of the ,heavens with mathematical accuracy for any given time and place1 work out directions by the use of the sphere or trigonometrical tables1 and have a competent knowledge of the motions and periods of the various planetary bodies4 ,when thus satisfied in his own mind that ,astrology is a dependable science1 and that he is capable of demonstrating it under test conditions1 he must be generous in the use of it4 ,here and there he will find one who is opposed to the belief that the stars have any influence in human affairs4 ,let him not waste logic with such a man1 but go straight to the task of convincing him by an appeal to facts4 ,for preference1 select a period when the directional influences are such as seem likely to hit the sceptic with considerable force1 define the event1 make a careful calculation of the time of its fulfilment1 and put them on paper1 which1 being yet unread by the man of ,common-sense1 should be placed under cover1 sealed1 and endorsed to be opened only after a certain date4 ,now a man who has been hammered rather severely and in quite an unexpected manner1 is usually open to conviction of truth when he finds that the nature and date of his disaster have been accurately foretold4 ,being a man of 8common-sense0 and not of intuition1 he will probably think that the ,astrologer might even have saved him from the consequences of his own lack of foresight4 ,so indeed might the ,astrologer have done had he taken the management of affairs from the beginning2 but to step in half-way to arrest causes which are already in operation and charged with inevitable effects1 is requiring too much of any man short of a ,prime ,minister6 ,there are certain things which even the most astute deductive reasoner cannot foresee1 and these are the points that should be utilised by the ,astrologer who seeks to convince others of the truth of his science4 ,a man cannot reason from his doorstep to a street accident4 ,if he could he would avoid it4 ,all men are not subject to accidents1 however4 ,but almost all are subject to bereavements1 losses1 sicknesses1 and changes of fortune4 ,those are the points which the ,astrologer intent on proselytising1 usually makes use of4 ,but events need not be in futurity to carry conviction4 ,if it can be shown that by mathematical calculations the events of the past can be recited with precision and exactness1 it is evident to the meanest intellect that nothing hinders from an extension of such calculations into the future4 ,and once convinced of the reliability of such claims to foreknowledge1 the practical man of the world is not slow to avail himself of its uses4 ,but ,astrology is not exhausted in the study of individual horoscopes1 for there are other departments of this extensive science4 ,the influence of the planets upon the weather1 as embodied in ,astro-meteorology2 the rise and fall of ,empires1 political changes1 the outbreak of wars1 of revolutions1 of epidemics1 as defined by ,state ,astrology so much in repute among the ,oriental rulers2 the occurrence of tidal waves1 earthquakes1 and other seismic phenomena1 all form a part of the complete equipment of the practical ,astrologer4 ,it would be superfluous to recite here the numerous and strikingly accurate forecasts which have been made by modern exponents of the science1 but it is only right to say that they reflect considerable credit upon their authors1 for the above-mentioned departments of astrological learning are by no means in the same efficient state as ,genethliacal ,astrology1 to an outline of which this work is devoted4 ,anciently it was otherwise1 and even in the ,east at this day they hold some secrets of traditional knowledge1 concerning which they are unduly mysterious and of which we have only the evidence afforded by more exact prediction upon certain points4 ,prejudice and ,ignorance are the twin giants which bar the path of the world's progress to-day1 even as they have ever done4 ,step by step they have been beaten back1 baffled by the light of ,reason1 harassed by the arrows of ,truth4 ,the world is redeeming its ancient heritage4 ,all that is now required to establish the paramount truth of ,astrology as a science is an impartial and thorough investigation1 preferably at the hands of scientific men1 of its methods and principles4 ,not that the truth is to be ratified at the hands of modern scientists1 seeing that their own teaching constitutes a mere shifting orthodoxy1 liable at any moment to undergo a fundamental change in theory by the discovery of a single new fact--but that to such men rightly belongs the duty of disproving the claims of ,astrology to be considered as a science1 for it is a fact to be regretted that certain members of their body have written against the subject in a spirit of prejudice and without adducing any data in support of their contention1 which ill becomes any man of scientific pretensions and is above all things detrimental to the cause of ,truth4 ,,chapter ,v ,a ,,popular ,,illustration ,in order to summarise and illustrate the principles which have been enunciated in the course of this work1 ,i shall avail myself of the horoscope of ,mr4 ,joseph ,chamberlain1 who was born on the #hth of ,july1 #ahcf1 at ,highbury1 the time of birth being stated to have been at about #b4cj in the morning4 ,calculations have since enabled us to fix the exact time of birth as at #b h4 #cf m4 a4m4 ,i subjoin the horoscopical figure for that time1 the calculation of which is as follows3-- ,h4 ,m4 ,s4 ,midheaven in ,r4,a4 at ,noon #gth ,july1 #ahcf #g #a #eh ,add time elapsed since #ad #cf #j ,equation for #ad;h4 #ccm4 at #aj secs4 #b #be --------- ,midheaven in ,right ,ascension at ,birth #ba #dj #bc ,the ,constitution4 ,born under the sign ,gemini1 with ,mercury rising in the sign ,cancer1 the ,sun near the conjunction with ,jupiter and in close sextile to the ,moon1 there is little doubt that the late ,colonial ,secretary is by nature gifted with an excellent constitution4 ,the sextile of the luminaries is a powerful co-ordinator1 and whenever sickness supervenes there will be a speedy recovery4 ,the semisquare aspect of ,mars1 while disposing to gouty affections of the hands and feet1 will contribute vital energy and power to throw off diseases1 while at the same time predisposing to accidents and wounds to the right shoulder or clavicle4 ,illustration ,the rising sign gives nervous energy and enormous capacity for work1 which is due to high nervous tension supported by a sound vitality4 ,the only hereditary predisposition is that indicated by ,mars1 which induces to fevers1 and gouty affections due to acidity4 ,the ,health4 ,the ,moon is strong in the sign ,taurus1 but not particularly well placed in the #abth ,house4 ,it has1 moreover1 the square aspects of ,neptune and ,venus from fixed signs4 ,these indications point to functional disorders of the heart1 throat and excretory system4 ,on the other hand1 there are the good aspects of the ,sun1 ,jupiter and ,uranus to counteract these adverse tendencies1 and it is certain that strong recuperative powers together with a normally good co-ordination of functions would induce a speedy recovery from any illness to which he may be liable4 ,considerable immunity from sickness of all sorts may therefore be predicated4 ,character and ,disposition4 ,the majority of the planets being in ,cardinal signs1 with three planets 7including the ,moon7 in ,fixed signs1 indicates a character that is energetic1 ambitious1 active1 sharp1 ingenious1 lively1 and persevering2 capable of cutting out a line in life for himself and making headway against obstacles2 disposed to ride roughshod over the weaknesses and prejudices of those who oppose him2 gifted with a pioneer spirit1 incisive manner1 and disposed at times to effect his ends regardless of the feelings and opinions of others4 ,at the same time there is sufficient patience1 method1 caution1 and watchfulness to make this extreme definition of purpose very effective4 ,laborious1 firm 7at times obstinate71 systematic1 and self-reliant1 he is capable of waiting for opportunities4 ,but finally he carries his purpose with a tour de force4 ,that which he lacks is adaptability1 suavity1 and ability to enter into the feelings of others4 ,he is too ambitious to be self-centred1 but yet too intent to be sympathetic4 ,the rising of ,mercury in trine aspect to ,saturn and ,uranus gives considerable mental capacity1 a wide grasp of facts1 a well-informed1 apt and business-like mind2 some originality1 constructiveness1 and power of marshalling facts and figures2 patience1 caution1 and secrecy4 ,there is not much imagination1 and the sympathies are not wide4 ,his methods and actions are governed by literal fact and mathematical certainty4 ,he is an omnivorous devourer of the accessible4 ,he takes the small fish by the handful and makes a meal of them2 but he leaves the ponderous whales for those of greater imagination and more leisurely habit4 ,the quadrature of ,mars to ,uranus will induce momentary outbursts of temper and some irritability of nature1 but the character ,i am delineating is not such as can easily be played upon1 for it is remarkably lacking in emotional susceptibility4 ,nevertheless1 the inspirational faculty is by no means absent1 and the presence of ,neptune in the #ith ,house in trine to the rising ,mercury1 is an index of considerable inventive genius1 extreme range of mental perception1 and telescopic discernment of future events4 ,venus in the #crd ,house shows some artistic tastes and fancies1 considerable appreciation of art and culture1 a fondness for flowers1 bright lights1 c4 ,but dominant above all are the two angular influences of ,uranus and ,mercury1 which render the mind mathematical and precise1 commercial1 apt1 business-like1 energetic1 and eminently magnetic4 ,finance4 ,the position of the ,sun in conjunction with ,jupiter in the sign ,cancer1 in sextile to the ,moon1 is the index of a high fortune and means exceeding a competence4 ,it is here worthy of note that ,cancer1 which in this horoscope holds the ,sun1 ,jupiter1 and ,mercury1 is the ruling sign of ,south ,africa1 with which ,colony ,mr4 ,chamberlain's fortunes have been for a long time so intimately associated4 ,it is also worthy of note that both ,cecil ,rhodes and ,barney ,barnato were born on the same day of the year1 the #eth of ,july1 with the ,sun in the #adth degree of ,cancer4 ,in the former case the ,sun was conjoined with ,moon and ,venus1 in sextile to ,uranus and trine to ,neptune1 while in the latter case the ,sun was in trine to ,jupiter4 ,in regard to ,mr4 ,chamberlain's horoscope1 it will be observed that ,jupiter1 which holds such effective power for increase in the #bnd ,house1 is also the ruler of the #gth1 and it is to be remembered that all partnerships1 commercial or social1 which he has contracted have so far proved highly satisfactory from a merely monetary point of view4 ,further1 the ,moon is affected with the good aspect of the ,sun in the #bnd ,house1 which is a further indication that on a purely financial basis ,mr4 ,chamberlain is a man worth going into partnership with4 ,position4 ,all the planets except ,neptune and ,saturn are rising1 and this at once indicates a man ambitious of independence and honours1 one who is confessedly a candidate for responsibility4 ,uranus in the ,midheaven and close to the meridian indicates that association with civic and governmental bodies in which ,mr4 ,chamberlain has rendered himself so conspicuous a figure1 and whereas the trine aspect of ,mercury in the ,ascendant to ,uranus in the ,midheaven and the sextile of the ,moon to ,uranus also are sure indications of a wide popularity1 the square aspect of ,mars to ,uranus from the #abth ,house1 will not fail to engender many veiled enmities1 machinations1 and inimical plots1 which have for their object the overthrow of ,mr4 ,chamberlain's prestige1 and which1 failing1 will find expression in vituperative abuse and bitter animosity4 ,but those who understand the virtue of the orientality of planets in a horoscope will retain their confidence in ,mr4 ,chamberlain's ability to hold his own against all opponents4 ,it will be observed that the direction of the ,ascendant to the place of ,uranus in the horoscope coincides with the age of ,mr4 ,chamberlain at the outbreak of hostilities in ,south ,africa1 while the direction of ,midheaven opposition ,saturn coincides with the progress of the ,boer ,war4 ,did space permit it would be possible to adduce a long list of directional arcs coinciding with the time and nature of all the more important epochs in ,mr4 ,chamberlain's career4 ,the student is invited to make some test of this matter by the aid of the rules already given in these pages4 ,marriage4 ,mr4 ,chamberlain has been thrice married4 ,it will be observed that not only is there a double-bodied sign on the cusp of the #gth ,house1 but the ,moon also applies to both the ,sun and ,jupiter in the sign ,cancer4 7,see ,sect4 ,,iii41 chap4 #h47 ,the aspect of the ,moon being benefic to both the ,sun and ,jupiter1 the marital state would be both harmonious and fortunate4 ,it is1 of course1 well known that ,mr4 ,chamberlain has1 from a merely worldly point of view1 married most advantageously4 ,this observation may be called 8wise after the event10 but ,i would observe that this geniture preceded my judgment of it1 and the rules from which ,i judge are to be found in the ,tetrabiblos of ,ptolemy1 written in the second century1 and since tested and found reliable by successive astrologers during some seventeen centuries4 ,saturn's aspect to ,jupiter1 the ruler of the #gth ,house1 and the ,moon's quadrature to ,venus must be held accountable for the successive bereavements which have disturbed the conjugal life in this case4 ,progeny4 ,the position of ,saturn in the #eth ,house1 and the affliction of ,venus by ,neptune and the ,moon1 will serve to account1 in connection with the marriage conditions1 for the small family which has been born to ,mr4 ,chamberlain1 for observe that ,venus is the ruler1 jointly with ,mercury1 of the #eth ,house1 while ,saturn is in the #eth and ruler of the #hth ,house4 ,the same positions and aspects threaten to curtail the succession4 ,the position of ,mercury1 joint ruler of the #eth1 in the sign ,cancer1 and just about to rise in the horoscope1 promises honours and distinctions to the first-born4 ,travelling4 ,the ,moon and ,mars are cadent in the ,horoscope1 and ,mercury1 the 8winged messenger0 7symbol of the trading-ship71 is rising4 ,these are indications of many journeys and changes and constant unrest4 ,but fixed signs being on the cusps of the #crd and #ith ,houses1 and the ,moon also in a fixed sign1 will suffice to account for the fact that ,mr4 ,chamberlain is not a great long-distance traveller4 ,cancer and ,leo holding the benefics and the ,sun also well aspected in ,cancer1 the ,moon being in ,taurus1 shows at once that ,france1 ,south ,africa1 ,holland1 ,scotland1 and ,ireland are parts of the world in which the operations of ,mr4 ,chamberlain would meet with success1 if it be not superfluous to detail specific territories in face of the abundant evidence of general success which this horoscope affords4 ,friends and ,enemies4 ,it was the boast of ,bismarck that he was the 8best-hated man in ,europe10 and it would be strange indeed if ,mr4 ,chamberlain had passed through life and attained so prominent a position without incurring the enmity1 or arousing the envy and malice of a considerable number of individuals4 ,nevertheless1 there are only two aspects in this horoscope which seem to point to any sort of trouble from such causes4 ,the points are those of ,neptune1 which afflicts both the ,moon and ,venus1 and of ,mars which afflicts ,uranus in the ,midheaven and the ,sun in the #bnd ,house4 ,by referring these two points to the ,ecliptic we find they correspond to the ,sun's position on or about the #bdth of ,may1 and the #bfth of ,january1 and ,i shall leave the reader to look up his ,almanac and find the individuals 7illustrious they must needs be to find chronicle in ,whittaker7 who were capable of filling the requirements of the case4 ,as to friends1 ,mr4 ,chamberlain should lack nothing4 ,with the ,moon in sextile to the ,sun and ,jupiter1 the ruler of the #aath ,house1 in the same benefic relations with the ,moon1 he would always be able to count upon a strong adherence1 and the only adverse indication in this matter is that ,mars1 part ruler of the #aath ,house1 holds the #abth ,house in square aspect to ,uranus in the ,midheaven4 ,this would be interpreted to mean that some of his friends will be disposed to become his enemies1 and to militate1 although ineffectually1 against his credit and position4 ,why ineffectually8 ,because ,mercury1 the ruler of the ,ascendant and prime significator of ,mr4 ,chamberlain1 is angular and well aspected1 while ,mars is weak and afflicted by ,uranus which is in elevation above it4 ,conclusion4 ,let it not be thought that the fame and position which ,mr4 ,chamberlain has attained in the political world is due entirely to the benefic position of the principal planets in his horoscope of birth4 ,opportunity is not everything4 ,the ability to use it counts for much1 and only a man of exceptional industry1 firmness1 and decision1 could have won for himself such peculiar distinction2 and only a man of singular faculty could have sustained his position in the face of so much determined opposition4 ,it will doubtless be a matter of extreme interest to the student of this horoscope1 as to every one interested in the political situation of to-day1 to observe the concurrent influences at work in the year #aijd-e4 ,mr4 ,chamberlain attained his sixty-eighth birthday anniversary on the #hth of ,july1 #aijd1 and by adding that number of degrees to the #bbnd degree of ,aquarius we obtain ,taurus #j as the point which has attained the meridian by 8direction40 ,this is called the ,progressed ,midheaven4 ,referring this point of the ,zodiac to the places of the planets at birth1 it is observed that the ,midheaven is approaching the sextile aspect of ,mercury1 having recently passed the opposition of ,saturn1 and having attained that aspect in #aije1 it passes in #aijh to the sextile of ,uranus1 the planet which holds the greatest elevation in the horoscope of birth4 ,the ,ascendant under the ,midheaven of ,taurus #j is ,leo #af #bh1 which is the ,progressed ,ascendant for the year #aijd4 ,it is in semisquare aspect to ,mercury1 and is the occasion of many anxieties1 worries1 and annoyances1 and some journeys by water4 ,it also indicates some derangement of the health due to nervous strain1 and affecting the stomach 7ruled by ,cancer74 ,the ,sun is directed in similar manner to the #bdth degree of the sign ,virgo1 where it meets the sextile aspect of ,jupiter in the #bnd ,house1 in the sign of its exaltation1 ,cancer4 ,this gives access of good fortune1 increase of honor and prestige1 and as ,jupiter rules the #aath ,house1 many adherents and supporters4 ,but being also in semisquare to ,venus1 ,mr4 ,chamberlain is in danger of losing a brother or other near male relative4 ,the ,moon by the same measure is within #d degrees of the place of ,jupiter1 again marking the year #aijh as one of exceptional advantage1 and in ,july of that year ,jupiter passes over the ,progressed ,ascendant4 99 99 99 99 99 ,during the year #aijd ,saturn has been close to the ,midheaven of the radical horoscope1 being in ,aquarius #ba1 and stationary therein1 during the month of ,june4 ,in ,march1 and again in ,october1 it transits the opposition of the ,progressed ,ascendant in ,aquarius #af1 while in ,february1 ,june1 and ,december ,uranus is in transit over the opposition of the radical ,ascendant in ,sagittarius #bh #af4 99 99 99 99 99 ,in #aije1 ,saturn will transit the ,midheaven in the horoscope of birth1 and in the summer of the same year ,mars will be ,stationary in opposition to the place of the ,moon at birth4 ,both these periods will be fraught with cares and anxieties1 and the latter influence will act detrimentally on the health1 disposing to attacks of gout and inflammatory action in the system4 99 99 99 99 99 ,but while the approaching and concurrent ,primary directions are of a highly benefic nature1 there will be no hint of a breakdown either in health or reputation1 and it needs only the additional good influence of a transit or ,secondary ,lunar direction to carry ,mr4 ,chamberlain at full swing to the summit of popular esteem and political power4 ,the curious who seek for coincidences will not be surprised and may be gratified to note that ,merx1 the root of the name of ,mercury1 signifies trade1 and that the planet ,mercury is rising in this horoscope of ,mr4 ,chamberlain1 who won great distinction for himself as ,president of the ,board of ,trade4 ,those who in more earnest vein seek for causes will do well to trace the transits of the major planets through this horoscope over the places of the ,significators1 the ,sun1 ,moon1 ,midheaven1 and ,ascendant at all the important epochs in the life of the late ,colonial ,secretary4 ,the working out of the more important directional arcs for the same period ,i can safely leave to the reader whose desire to thoroughly test the claims of ,astrology has been sufficiently aroused by the perusal of these pages4 ,it is at all times easier to dispute than to disprove1 and this apparently is the reason for so much that is said1 and so little that is shown1 against ,astrology4 ,as to the modus operandi of planetary influence ,i conceive that the brain cells are infilled with a nervous pabulum of such delicate nature as to be capable of responding to the finer etheric vibrations instituted by the planets2 that the electrostatic condition of the earth's atmosphere at the moment of birth determines the particular mode or modes of vibration to which the individual brain is syntonically responsive2 and ,i could1 did space permit1 immediately adduce hundreds of instances to show that whenever the same positions or planetary aspects recur in the heavens as were in existence at the moment of a birth1 the individual immediately responds to the excitation1 and gives instant evidence of such excitation by actions in agreement with the nature of the planets involved4 ,,chapter ,,vi ,,planetary ,,periods1 ,,etc4 ,we now come to the point where it will be necessary to explain more fully the various elements with which so far the reader has only been dealing in a more or less mechanical way4 ,it is1 of course1 of first importance that the student of ,astrology should have a correct method1 and this has been given as fully as space will permit in the preceding pages4 ,but it is also necessary that one should know why he is doing a thing1 as well as how to do it4 ,henry ,ward ,beecher once said that if a man turned soil with a spade knowing why he did it1 the work was more effectively done than if he did not know4 ,for this reason it will be convenient for the student to have a general view of the cosmical elements that he employs in his calculations and of the factors that enter into his consideration when studying a horoscope4 ,for purposes of calculation1 the astronomer regards the planets as moving around the ,sun in circular orbits at a uniform rate1 and the positions thus obtained are called the mean longitudes of the planets4 ,but it is known that the orbit of a planet answers to the functions of an ellipse1 of which the ,sun is presumed to occupy one of the foci4 ,then it becomes necessary to correct the ,mean ,longitude of the planet by an equation which is called the ,centre equation4 ,let us make this quite clear4 ,the circular orbit supposed in the first instance is what may be called the ,mean ,orbit of the planet1 as compared with its true orbit1 which is elliptical4 ,similarly1 the motion of the planet in the circular orbit is called the ,mean ,motion1 as compared with the true motion1 which is variable1 being quickest at the perihelion and slowest at the aphelion4 ,the difference between the ,mean longitude and the ,true longitude is determined by the ,anomaly1 which is the distance of the planet from its ,aphelion1 or farthest distance from the ,sun4 ,the anomaly is thus ,l-,a1 i4 e41 longitude minus aphelion4 ,but it will be seen that ellipses may be of greater or less eccentricity1 and the equation to centre depends on the eccentricity4 ,this may need a word of explanation4 ,suppose a circular orbit4 ,draw the two diameters at right angles to one another2 they are of equal length4 ,now suppose another figure in which the one diameter is longer than the other4 ,the circumference of this figure will be an ellipse4 ,the greater diameter is called the ,major ,axis1 and the diameter at right angles to it is the ,minor ,axis4 ,the proportion of one to the other axis determines the amount of eccentricity4 ,twice the eccentricity gives the equation to centre1 and to reduce this to degrees and minutes of a circle it has to be multiplied by the chord of #fj degrees1 which is #egbiegh4 ,this gives the maximum equation to centre when the planet is #c signs or #ij degrees from its aphelion1 and therefore on the ,minor ,axis4 ,the eccentricity of the various planets may be here stated3 ,mercury1 #j4bjee2 ,mars1 #j4jica2 ,jupiter1 #j4jdhb2 ,saturn1 #j4iefb2 ,uranus1 #j4idfg2 ,earth1 #j4jafh2 ,venus1 #j4jjfh4 ,these quantities undergo a gradual change4 ,thus it is found that ,jupiter1 ,mars1 and ,mercury are increasing the eccentricity of their orbits1 while ,venus1 the ,earth1 and ,saturn are reducing it4 ,the orbit of ,venus is now almost circular1 and it affords an example of the perfect astronomical paradigm4 ,thus by the mean motions and the equation to centre the true longitudes of the planets in their heliocentric orbits are obtained4 ,but inasmuch as the orbits of the planets do not lie in the same plane as the ,sun1 but cross its apparent path at various angles of inclination1 a further equation is due to reduce the orbital longitudes of the planets to the ecliptic4 ,to further reduce these true longitudes into their geocentric equivalents1 i4 e41 as seen from the ,earth's centre1 we have to employ the angle of ,parallax1 which is the angle of difference as seen from two different points in space4 ,this will vary according to the relative distances of the bodies from one another4 ,the ,moon's longitude is always taken geocentrically4 ,when approximate longitudes are required1 the employment of a mean vector1 which is equal to half the minor axis of the planet1 is found convenient4 ,for the convenience of astronomical students ,i may here give the constant logarithms of the values of the tangent1 which1 being added to the logarithm of the tangent of half the distance of the planet from the ,sun in longitude1 will give the tangent of the complement4 ,,logarithms ,neptune1 #i4igajg2 ,uranus1 #i4iedgi2 ,saturn1 #i4ijheh2 ,jupiter1 #i4hcaad2 ,mars1 #i4cbdeg2 ,venus1 #i4bjhab2 ,mercury1 #i4fcbaj4 ,to these add the bog1 tangent of half the angle between the planet and ,sun1 taken by heliocentric longitude1 which call ,a4 ,call the result ,b4 ,for major planets add ,a and ,b1 and for minor planets subtract ,b from ,a4 ,in either case the result will be the angle of longitude between the planet and the ,sun as seen from the ,earth1 and hence its geocentric longitude may be known4 ,but a more convenient method of obtaining the approximate longitudes of the planets geocentrically is by means of the ,planetary ,geocentric periods4 ,thus ,uranus has a period of #hd years1 after which it returns to the same longitude on the same day of the year and will be further advanced in its orbit by #a #e4 ,saturn has a period of #ei years1 after which it comes to the same place in the zodiac and will be further advanced by #a #ec4 ,jupiter has a period of #hc years1 when it is found to be only #d advanced upon its former longitude4 ,mars' period is #gi years plus an advance of #b #d4 ,mercury's period is also #gi years1 and its advance is #e #cb4 ,venus has a period of #h years1 when it is further advanced in the zodiac by #a #cb4 ,for the calculation of the approximate geocentric longitude of the major planets these periods are very useful1 but are of less value in regard to the minor planets ,venus and ,mercury4 ,suppose ,i want the longitude of ,uranus in the year ,a4 ,d4 #hbg4 ,i have its longitude on the first of ,january1 #aiab1 in ,capricorn #bh #ag4 ,then #aiab-hbg gives #a1jhe years1 which being divided by the period of ,uranus 7#hd years71 yields #ab periods and #gg years4 ,the increment for #a period being #a #e1 that for #ab will be #ac1 and #gg-hdths of #a #e will be another degree1 making #ad degrees4 ,as the date is anterior1 this amount must be subtracted from its longitude on the first of ,january1 ,a4 ,d4 #hbg1 and in effect we obtain ,capricorn #ad degs4 #ag mins4 as the longitude of ,uranus on the first of ,january1 #hbg1 as seen from the ,earth4 ,for the purpose of determining the effects1 if any1 due to the presence of a planet in its ,aphelion1 ,perihelion1 or ,node1 the following values are given for the year #ahjj ,a4 ,d43 ,planet4 ,aphelion4 ,perihelion4 ,node4 ,s4 ,s4 ,s4 ,mercury #h #ad #ba #b #ad #ba #a #ae #eg ,venus #aj #h #cf #d #h #cf #b #ad #eb ,mars #e #b #bc #aa #b #bc #a #ah #a ,jupiter #f #aa #h #j #aa #h #c #h #bd ,saturn #h #bi #d #b #bi #d #c #ba #eg ,uranus #aa #ag #ba #e #ag #ba #b #ab #ea ,neptune #g #ab #bb #b #ab #bb #d #i #ce ,the longitudes of the ,aphelia are increased in #ajj years by the following quantities3 ,neptune1 #a #be2 ,uranus1 #a #bh2 ,saturn1 #a #ej2 ,jupiter1 #a #ce2 ,mars1 #a #eb2 ,venus1 #a #dc2 ,mercury1 #a #cd4 ,these quantities are additive for years after #ahjj1 and subtractive for years before that epoch4 ,in the present state of astronomical science it is not certain that these values are absolutely correct4 ,calculated from the ,tables of ,kepler1 the differences are only slight1 but still sufficient to make considerable error in testing for exact conjunctions or ingresses4 ,lilly1 who predicted the ,great ,plague and ,fire of ,london some years previous to the event from the ingress of the ,aphelion of ,mars to the sign ,virgo1 evidently made use of the ,rudolphine ,tables constructed by ,tycho and ,kepler1 and according to these the ingress took place in #afed1 while according to more modern ,tables it did not take place until #afgb4 ,it is probable1 however1 that the positions of the ,aphelia here given will be sufficiently close for all practical purposes4 ,a word or two may now be said regarding the periodic conjunctions of the planets4 ,as will be seen from the periods given1 five periods of ,jupiter are nearly equal to two of ,saturn4 ,it is found that the two planets form their conjunctions every #bj years4 ,thus there was a conjunction in ,virgo in #ahfa1 another in ,taurus in #ahha1 and another in ,capricornus in #aija4 ,the next will be in ,virgo in #aiba4 ,the two planets are thus now forming their successive conjunctions in the ,earthly ,tripicity2 but in #aiha will make their mutation conjunction by falling together in the ,airy sign ,libra4 ,uranus and ,jupiter form their conjunctions every #ad years4 ,thus there was a conjunction in ,sagittarius in #aijj1 and there will be another in ,aquarius in #aiad1 another in ,aries in #aibh1 and so on4 ,the conjunctions of ,neptune with the other major planets are necessarily in terms of the periods of the latter1 those of ,neptune and ,uranus being very infrequent1 while those with ,jupiter will be proportionately more frequent4 ,for the period of ,jupiter is only #ab years1 while ,neptune remains in the same sign for #ae years4 ,the conjunction of ,jupiter and ,neptune in ,cancer in #aijg will be followed by another in ,leo in #aiai1 and this again by another in ,virgo in #aicb4 ,obviously1 if the planets by their transits effect anything whatsoever1 the double transit of major planets must have a correspondingly greater effect4 ,the careful student of ,astrology will institute a number of tests in order to find what effects are due to the combined action of the planets when in conjunction at transit1 and also when in opposition or quadrature4 ,the chief points to be noticed in connection with the transits of the planets are the ,midheaven1 ,ascendant1 and the places of the ,sun and ,moon1 as already mentioned in ,chapter ,,ii of this section4 ,the ancients also included the places of the ,moon's ,nodes1 and it is usually found that the transit of the ,south ,node over any of the ,significators is attended by unfortunate results4 ,with these observations as a general guide to the cosmical factors involved in the planetary motions1 the reader will be able to take a more intelligent interest in the foundations of his study than is the usual case from the pursuit of the subject by rule-of-thumb methods4 ,when we come to the consideration of the ,moon as a cosmical factor we are face to face with one of the most difficult and evasive problems4 ,for many centuries astronomers grappled with this inconstant factor with small success1 and at the present day the problems attaching to the vagaries of lunar motion are in anything but a satisfactory condition4 ,prior to the time of ,ptolemy nothing was known of the ,moon except that it had a certain mean motion and formed its syzygies at definite periods1 the mean values of which were very closely known4 ,but certainly nothing was known regarding the inequalities of motion which are found to exist4 ,ptolemy discovered the equation due to the action of the ,sun upon the ,moon in its orbit4 ,this is called the ,evection4 ,tycho later discovered that a further equation was due to the disturbance caused by the ,sun along the vector4 ,both these equations were employed by ,kepler4 ,but of these1 later astronomers have added one after another equation1 going so far as to employ the action due to ,venus and ,jupiter1 while ignoring that due to the action of the other planets upon the ,moon4 ,buckhardt1 whose formulae were used in the calculation of the ,nautical ,almanac for many years1 employs no less than #cg equations of the ,moon's mean longitude4 ,indeed1 the whole business has become farcical4 ,the fact is that only three of these equations are necessary in order to obtain the ,moon's true place in the ecliptic at any time1 and for the syzygy only one equation is necessary4 ,the trouble has arisen from the fact that the eccentricity of the ,moon's orbit has been wrongly estimated1 and most of these equations now employed by astronomers are effectual only in correcting this false estimate4 ,kepler gives the maximum equation to centre as #d #ei #ei1 while modern astronomers have given it as #f #ah #bh4 ,neither of these is quite correct1 though ,kepler is much nearer the truth4 ,another problem in connection with the ,moon that has puzzled astronomers for a long time and is still in the region of experimental science is what is known as the ,secular equation4 ,it is found that by taking the present mean motion of the ,moon and applying the various equations1 found necessary to bring the calculations into line with observations of the ,moon's position in the zodiac1 a considerable difference is found to exist between the calculated place of the ,moon and its recorded position at the time of ancient eclipses4 ,according to our modern ,tables1 ancient eclipses happened sooner than they should have done1 or1 in other words1 the ,moon was more advanced in its orbit than our ,tables require4 ,the inference is that the ,moon was formerly moving quicker in a smaller orbit than now1 or conversely1 the ,moon is now receding and getting farther from the ,earth4 ,consequently its action on the tides must be diminishing1 and also its action on the equatorial mass of the ,earth1 which is considered to be the chief factor in the production of what is called the ,precession of the ,equinoxes4 ,yet whereas by one statement the disturbance due to the ,moon is diminishing1 another statement shows that the ,precession of the ,equinoxes is increasing6 ,voila le debacle4 ,all these anomalies and contradictions are due1 as ,i shall show in my new ,tables and ,thesis1 to the importation of false factors into the problem of the ,moon's motion1 which1 in fact1 is extremely simple1 perfectly regular1 and affected only by its anomaly or distance from the aphelion and1 where the time equation is employed1 by the increase of radius4 ,jupiter and ,venus have no more action on the ,moon than have ,mars and ,saturn1 in fact none at all1 and the only body that has any action upon the lunar orb is the ,sun1 which it exerts indirectly through its action on the ,earth4 ,these problems need not1 however1 vex the minds of the student of ,astrology4 ,it is sufficient for him that he has the place of the ,moon calculated for him in the ephemeris reduced from the ,nautical or other official ,almanac4 ,it is important1 however1 that he should know that such problems exist4 ,sir ,isaac ,newton was first led to the subject of ,astronomy by his thoroughness and scientific propensity4 ,he studied ,astrology1 and proceeded to the study of ,astronomy the better to understand and deal with the problems that the predictive science presented4 ,for it is to be observed that ,astrology in his day was entirely in the hands of astronomers1 who calculated their own ephemerides and pursued the higher methods of astrological calculation as presented in my 8,profnostic ,astronomy40 ,kepler avowed himself to be convinced of the truth of the science of ,astrology1 and showed himself to be a competent critic as much by his understanding of the astronomical problems involved as by his marvellous forecast of the rise and fall of ,wallenstein4 ,tycho1 his colleague and collaborator1 also a great astronomical discoverer1 was a professed ,astrologer1 and added to his stipend by the calculation of horoscopes4 ,astrology is quite a reputable study1 and needs but to be emancipated from the service of a horde of half-educated plagiarists and parasites in order to take its place once more among subjects of serious consideration by the learned4 ,astronomy is interesting1 but to be made useful it must find interpretation in terms of our daily life and common needs4 ,it is in this connection that ,astrology has played ,cinderella since the days of official science4 ,the day is not far off when it will come into its own4 ,,chapter ,,vii ,,revolutions1 ,,eclipses1 ,,ingresses1 ,,etc4 ,beyond the various time measures and indicators mentioned in ,section ,,iv1 ,chapter ,,ii1 there are others which have a certain reputation among astrological students4 ,the chief of these1 and one that has been in vogue for many centuries1 is the ,solar ,revolution1 or ,birthday ,figure1 as it is sometimes called4 ,it consists in a map of the heavens for the return of the ,sun to the exact zodiacal position that it held at birth1 and this sidereal revolution is made the basis of an annual forecast of the general trend of affairs in the life of the subject4 ,to find the time of the ,sun's return to its own place in the zodiac is1 of course1 a simple matter of proportion from the ephemeris for the current year4 ,this is effected by comparing the radical or birthplace of the ,sun with the longitude of the ,sun in the ,ephemeris on the anniversary day1 which will give the increment more or less required to be equated4 ,then with this difference of the two positions of the ,sun 7a7 at birth and 7b7 at noon of the anniversary1 find the diurnal proportional logarithm and subtract from this the logarithm for the ,sun's motion in #bd hours4 ,the result will be the logarithm for the hours and minutes from ,noon at which the ,sun was in the exact position it held at the birth4 ,thus you have the time of the solar return1 and all that is necessary is to erect a horoscope for this time and set the planets in the figure4 ,then1 if the benefic planets are in elevation and the ,lord or ,ruler of the ,ascendant is well placed and aspected1 there will be commensurate results1 and a beneficial year may be predicted2 but if1 on the contrary1 the malefic planets are elevated and the ruler of the horoscope is badly aspected1 the year ensuing will be fraught with many troubles and vexatious events4 ,but inasmuch as the time-factor is here the return of the ,sun to its radical place1 chief attention must be paid to the aspects of the ,sun1 and conclusions agreeable to the nature of the afflicting planets or those that favourably aspect the luminary may be made accordingly4 ,as regards the time at which events signified by the aspects may be expected to transpire1 ,i have found that they usually occur during the transit of the ,sun over the places of the planets in the annual horoscope4 ,thus a person born in ,august may have the ,sun in the annual horoscope in square aspect to ,saturn1 the ,sun being in ,leo and ,saturn in ,taurus4 ,then the evil signified by the aspect of ,saturn to the ,sun would transpire about the date that the ,sun passed the opposition of ,saturn in the sign ,scorpio some time in ,november1 or again in ,may of the following year when the ,sun was in conjunction with the place of ,saturn in the horoscope for the ,solar return4 ,events that are benefic in nature may be produced from the transit of the ,sun over the places of the benefics in the ,solar figure1 or over the good aspects of the planet which in the annual horoscope gives promise of benefit4 ,in similar manner the return of the ,moon to its own place may be taken as a monthly guide to the nature of ensuing events1 but it is to be observed that the ,moon's place cannot be taken with the same degree of accuracy as that of the ,sun1 owing to the varied acceleration of the ,moon from hour to hour4 ,the ,nautical ,almanac gives this hourly acceleration1 so that by means of it the ,moon's longitude can be arrived at with great accuracy for any time of the day1 but the cheaper ephemerides do not contain more than the longitude for noon and midnight4 ,the student will find1 however1 that the general purposes of a ,lunar horoscope may be served with sufficient accuracy from this source if chief regard be had to the aspects of the ,moon at its return and not to the mundane positions of the planets4 ,arguing from analogy1 one would suppose that a similar horoscope could be made for the return of any of the planets to their radical places1 but until we have a popular publication in which the planets' places are given with a greater degree of accuracy than at present1 we cannot pretend to indicate the true time of the revolutions of these bodies4 ,another means of prognosis to which some astrologers have attached considerable importance is what is known as ,the ,synodical ,revolution4 ,this consists of a horoscope set for the time of the ,moon's return to the same distance from the ,sun that it held at birth1 which distance is called the elongation4 ,this measure is based upon the relative motions of the ,sun and ,moon in the zodiac after birth4 ,thus if the mean motion of the ,sun for one day be taken as #ei and that of the ,moon as #ac #aa1 then the mean elongation of the ,moon will be #ab #ab4 ,but the ,sun and ,moon are both subject to a variation from the mean motion1 and thus the elongation of the ,moon is an inconstant quantity4 ,the only means of effecting the calculation1 therefore1 is by reference to the ephemeris for the year of birth4 ,then1 having the ,moon's radical elongation1 the successive dates at which this elongation is repeated are to be noted1 and each of them is accounted as one year of life4 ,thus for the #bjth year of life one must count #ai synods or conjunctions of the ,sun and ,moon after birth1 and thereafter proceed to fix the date after the last synod at which the ,moon's elongation is the same as that of birth4 ,this idea seems to give grounds for the ancient belief in effects attaching to the ,moon's age4 ,for the ,moon's age denotes the distance of the ,moon from the last conjunction with the ,sun1 and if a person was born on the tenth day of the ,moon1 then every tenth day of the ,moon in successive revolutions will be of importance1 since the ,moon will be in the same relations with the ,sun as at birth4 ,the aspects that the ,moon bears to the other celestial bodies at these times is held to be a guide to the nature of succeeding events4 ,but more attention is paid to such horoscopes thus calculated wherein the ,moon falls on the place of any of the planets at birth4 ,ingresses are of two kinds1 mundane and zodiacal4 ,a mundane ingress is made when a planet in the heavens comes to the cusp of one of the ,houses in the horoscope of birth--that is to say1 to the degree of the zodiac which held the cusp of such ,house4 ,thus if the #hth degree of the sign ,aquarius were on the cusp of the #bnd ,house of the horoscope and ,saturn in the heavens made transit of that degree of the zodiac1 then the ,ingress of ,saturn to the #bnd ,house would be effected and would be followed by a period of considerable financial stress4 ,similarly with other planets in the horoscope4 ,each will make its periodical transit through the several ,houses of the horoscope of birth1 and these will be attended by events in terms of the nature of the planet1 the ,house it transits and its affections at birth4 ,zodiacal ingresses are those that are made by the planets into the signs of the zodiac successively1 and it is held that a change in the trend of affairs will take place in that department of the life ruled by the ,house wherein that sign is placed at birth4 ,this1 however1 appears to be an extension of the former kind of ingress1 and should be taken with some reserve4 ,certainly it will be found that very marked effects are due to the transits of the planets through the ,houses of the horoscope1 and if the aspects of these planets in the ephemeris are taken into account1 it will be found that a very accurate basis for a forecast of the various incidents of individual life is thereby afforded4 ,in this connection the periodical synods of the planets should be observed1 for it is evident that if we ascribe an influence to the transit of ,saturn we must set a still more important value upon the transit of that planet when in conjunction or opposition with any other body in the heavens4 ,thus the planets ,mars and ,saturn form their conjunctions in successive signs after an interval of about two years1 during which period it may be said that the effects of the last conjunction are in play4 ,thus ,saturn and ,mars formed their last conjunction in ,august1 #aiaa1 in the sign ,taurus1 and1 according to the position of that sign in various horoscopes1 effects more or less detrimental and disturbing would be experienced during the course of two years after that date4 ,jupiter's period of #ab years will be watched with interest by those who are studying the effects due to its action1 for it passes through one sign or one ,house every year on an average1 and therefore constitutes a good chronocrator or time-marker4 ,but ,jupiter can effect little for good if at the time of its transit it is afflicted in the heavens by the adverse aspect or conjunction of another planet4 ,similarly1 ,saturn or ,uranus or ,neptune has to be judged according to its condition and aspects at the time of transit or ingress4 ,eclipses1 whether of the ,sun or ,moon1 are significant of evil according to their positions and aspects in the horoscope4 ,for if an eclipse of the ,sun happens it will afflict male members of the family1 and an eclipse of the ,moon will denote evil to female members4 ,eclipses falling in the sign occupying the #ajth or #dth ,houses will afflict the parents1 and those which fall in the #crd ,house will similarly affect collateral relatives1 such as brothers and sisters1 according to the sex indicated4 ,the effects of eclipses last for eighteen months1 and will be great or small according to the magnitude of the eclipse and considerations due to aspects4 ,when falling on the places of benefic planets or those well aspected in the horoscope1 the eclipse will portend good arising out of some catastrophe or bereavement4 ,but when falling on the places of the malefics1 or on places in the horoscope that are badly aspected by the planets at birth1 they portend nothing but evil4 ,falling in other parts of the figure1 they are not of such significance1 but generally it may be said that eclipses have a detrimental effect on such affairs as are governed by the ,house wherein the eclipse falls4 ,it has been said that unless an eclipse is visible in that part of the world where the subject was born1 it will have no effect upon his health or fortunes4 ,but this cannot be the case1 for then those planets that are beneath the horizon at the time of birth could with equal reason be exempt from any share in our consideration1 whereas1 on the contrary1 we know full well that in whatever part of the circle the planets may be situated at the moment of birth they will affect the life and fortunes in equal degree1 but especially such department of the life as may be ruled by the ,house a planet occupies4 ,the following is a list of the visible eclipses that will be witnessed in ,great ,britain during the next ten years3 #aiad4--abth ,march1 ,moon eclipsed in the third hour of the morning1 nearly total4 #bast ,august1 the ,sun eclipsed about noon1 two-thirds of the disc eclipsed4 ,total in ,sweden and ,norway4 #aiaf4--ith ,january1 ,moon sets in contact with the shadow4 #crd ,february1 the ,sun sets about half eclipsed4 ,total across the ,atlantic4 #aeth ,july1 ,moon eclipsed about three-quarters of its disc in the fifth hour of the morning4 #aiag4--hth ,january1 ,moon eclipsed in the eighth hour of the morning1 just before sunrise4 ,total4 #dth ,july1 ,moon totally eclipsed in the eleventh hour of the evening4 #bhth ,december1 ,moon begins to be eclipsed just before setting4 #aiai4--gth ,november1 in the twelfth hour at night the ,moon is partially eclipsed4 #bbnd ,november1 the ,sun has one-fifth of its disc obscured near sunset4 ,annular in the ,south ,atlantic4 #aibj4--crd ,may1 ,moon totally eclipsed in the second hour of the morning4 #ajth ,november1 ,sun sets half eclipsed4 #aiba4--hth ,april1 in the ninth hour of the morning the ,sun is eclipsed1 about five-sixths of the disc being obscured4 ,annular eclipse in the north4 #afth ,october1 the ,moon has five-sixths of its disc overshadowed at eleventh hour of the evening4 #aibb4--bhth ,march1 ,sun eclipsed in the third hour of the afternoon1 about one-sixth being obscured4 ,annular in ,africa4 ,the years #ahje and #aiag are great eclipse years1 for in both those years there are no less than seven eclipses4 ,from like causes we argue like effects1 and therefore we may anticipate a great convulsion in the political world during the year #aiag and thereafter4 ,at that time ,mars and ,saturn will form their conjunction in the sign ,leo together with ,neptune1 and these successive conjunctions of the three major planets cannot fail to produce great mutations1 more especially in those countries that are ruled by the sign ,leo4 99 99 99 99 99 ,so far as individual horoscopes are concerned the effects of these conjunctions and the eclipses which fall in the sign ,capricornus and ,cancer must be judged by the particular ,houses of the horoscopes in which they occur4 ,the general effects due to any eclipse or conjunction of the larger planets are distributed and find their expression through individual horoscopes1 the influence filtrating as it were through a variety of channels for the ultimate purpose of human evolution and government4 99 99 99 99 99 ,thus by many lines of evidence the patient student may confirm his belief in the influence of the stars in human life1 which involves the yet higher concept of the government of humanity by the greater ,intelligences according to preordained laws1 divine in their origin and cosmical in their expression4 ,to this concept as a final expression of faith and of scientific experience we must eventually submit our beliefs and opinions1 and haply our willing compliance4
