as the book tells its own tale--clear and to the point4 ,he has very rightly taken the sidereal year as the basis of his calculations2 any other system of computation ends only in difficulties4 ,but the reader will find other novelties1 not the least among them being the fact that the prophecies of ,daniel are made to end with the beginning of the history of the ,christian ,church1 instead of lengthening out into a still unknown future2 this is a great advance on previous interpreters4 ,and he will doubtless be struck by calculations according to which the #abij ,days of the ,hebrew ,prophet terminated in ,a4,d4 #cc4 ,illustration3 signature of ,a4 ,h4 ,sayce4 ,,assouan1 ,,egypt1 ,,january #ag1 #aije4 ,thus far ,i had written in #aijb4 ,since then the public has shown that it can appreciate good work by the rapidity with which copy after copy of ,mr4 ,auchincloss' little book has been called for4 ,it is now issued once more with additions and improvements1 but otherwise in an unchanged form4 ,there is one paragraph in it to which the ,assyriologist is now able to add a few words4 ,mr4 ,auchincloss draws attention to the sense of completeness and perfection which is associated in the ,old ,testament1 not only with the number seven1 but also with the number ten4 ,it has long been known that the ,babylonians possessed a week of seven days4 ,but it is only recently that ,i have pointed out that they also possessed a week of five days4 ,besides the week of five days1 however1 there was a double week of ten days1 the month consisting of thirty days and being divided into three equal parts4 ,illustration3 signature of ,a4 ,h4 ,sayce4 ,,preface4 ,this study of the ,book of ,daniel is based on the conviction1 that its word is in very deed the ,word of ,god4 ,in approaching the subject we have brought to the solution of its problems only such numerals as were known to the ancient ,hebrews and to the writers of the ,new ,testament4 ,numerals that were symbolized in their feasts and were current before times of rejoicing4 ,but towering over all1 we have brought ,god's own standard of time1 viz3 the sidereal year1 which the greatest of modern astronomers ,laplace and ,herschel tell us has not varied the #a_/ajj part of a second of time in the last #bjjj years4 ,we did so under the conviction that if the ,book of ,daniel was of human origin1 a piece of historic fiction1 it could not stand this severe test1 yet if it was truly the ,word of ,god it would be found resting on that bed rock1 viz3--a year whose length was #cfe days1 #f hours1 #i minutes and #i-f_/aj seconds a period unknown to the ancients but given to us by modern science4 ,the ,book has stood the test and its true character comes out in bold relief4 ,without a perfectly fitting key1 the tendency of its readers is to treat the ,book lightly1 call in question its statements and smile at its prophecies4 ,time1 however1 vindicates the statements of ,daniel and fixes on them the seal of truth4 ,also1 newly-found inscriptions both on rocks and tablets1 together with ancient writings composed in those times1 bring to confusion adverse criticism4 ,the ,book of ,daniel is a most important part of the ,word of ,god1 and is set like a gem among jewels4 ,its words of warning were sounded #fjj years before the destruction of ,jerusalem by ,titus4 ,its prophecies are like mile-stones along the highway of ,jewish history1 each one bringing the observer nearer to ,messiah's kingdom1 to that ,great and ,notable day of the ,lord--,pentecost of ,a4,d4 #cc--when the ,holy ,spirit was manifested to the ,jews1 also nearer to ,a4,d4 #ci1 the year of the manifestation to the ,gentiles4 ,daniel alone of all the prophets received ,divine illumination regarding these dates4 ,they mark the remotest boundary of his book1 and therefore bar the way to fanciful conclusions in regard to later times4 ,read aright1 ,daniel's words have no uncertain sound1 they are definite and exact like the forecast of an astronomer4 ,viewed from every standpoint the grand old ,president of the ,chaldean ,court had a character of rare beauty and symmetry1 that will continue to shine throughout the ages4 ,he will stand in his lot to the end of the days2 the noblest example of human courage coupled with unquestioning faith1 the typical companion1 the nobleman1 courtier1 seer ,,in ,,hebrew4 ,sidenote3 ,b4,c4 #fjf4 #a4 ,in the third year of the reign of ,jehoiakim king of ,judah came ,nebuchadnezzar king of ,babylon unto ,jerusalem1 and besieged it4 --,this siege took place in ,b4,c4 #fjf4 ,verse #e says that ,daniel and the royal captives received #c years' training and verse #ah shows that at the end of #c years they graduated4 ,this brings us to the year ,b4,c4 #fjc which chapter #b verse #a says was the #bnd of ,nebuchadnezzar's reign1 consequently ,nebuchadnezzar began to reign in ,b4,c4 #fje4 ,this date agrees with the figures given in the ,almagesta of ,ptolemy1 also with the statements of ,berosus4 ,besides it harmonizes perfectly the ,bible account of the first #e years in ,jehoiakim's reign1 as set forth in ,jeremiah ,,xxv1 ,,xxvi1 ,,xxvii1 ,,xxxv1 ,,xxxvi1 ,,xlv1 ,,xlvi1 and ,,ii ,kings ,,xxiv4 ,still further a draughtsman can plot it on a chart1 with the same accuracy that a surveyor can map a piece of land1 provided he governs his #ahth1 and #aith years of ,nebuchadnezzar's reign4 ,it thus will become manifest that ,daniel and his companions were taken captive in the ,summer of ,b4,c4 #fjf4 #b4 ,and the ,lord gave ,jehoiakim king of ,judah into his hand1 with part of the vessels of the house of ,god3 which he carried into the land of ,shinar to the house of his god3 and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god4 ,as foretold in ,jeremiah ,,xxix4 #aj4 the captivity of ,judah lasted #gj years1 ,b4,c4 #fjf to ,b4,c4 #ecf1 when the ,lord stirred up the spirit of ,cyrus to proclaim freedom to the of the princes2 #d4 ,children in whom was no blemish1 but well favoured1 and skilful in all wisdom1 and cunning in knowledge1 and understanding science1 and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace1 and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the ,chaldeans4 --,precisely as foretold by the prophet ,isaiah1 more than a century prior to the event4 ,isaiah ,,xxxix4 #g4 #e4 ,and the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat1 and of the wine which he drank3 so nourishing them three years1 that at the end thereof they might stand before the king4 #f4 ,now among these were of the children of ,judah1 ,daniel1 ,hananiah1 ,mishael1 and ,azariah3 #g4 ,unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names3 for he gave unto ,daniel the name of ,belteshazzar2 and to ,hananiah1 of ,shadrach2 and to ,mishael1 of ,meshach2 and to ,azariah1 of ,abed-nego4 #h4 ,but ,daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat1 nor with the wine which he drank3 therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself4 --,though these three men1 ,noah1 ,daniel1 and ,job were in it1 they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness4 ,ezekiel ,,xiv4 #ad4 ,note in passing1 that by order of birth these names should be read ,noah1 ,job and ,daniel4 ,however1 according to a custom common among the writers of ,scripture1 the line of ,divine favor was followed in preference to the order of birth4 ,for example1 ,japheth1 ,ham1 ,shem was the order of birth2 but the records stands3 ,these are the generations of the sons of ,noah2 ,shem1 ,ham and ,japheth4 ,so too we read of ,abram1 ,nahor1 and ,haran when the order of birth was ,haran1 ,nahor and ,abram4 ,also of ,aaron and ,moses and ,miriam1 when the true order was ,miriam1 ,aaron and ,moses4 #i4 ,now ,god had brought ,daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs4 #aj4 ,and the prince of the eunuchs said unto ,daniel1 ,i fear my lord the king1 who hath appointed your meat and your drink3 for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort8 then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king4 #aa4 ,then said ,daniel to ,melzar1 whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over ,daniel1 ,hananiah1 ,mishael1 and ,azariah1 #ab4 ,prove thy servants1 ,i beseech thee1 ten days2 and let them give us pulse to eat1 and water to drink4 ,the ,scriptures everywhere associate a sense of completeness and perfection with the numeral #g1 also with the numeral #aj4 ,the ,mosaic ,law teems with instances of this sort4 ,a ,sabbatic period covered #g years4 ,sprinklings were administered #g times1 feasts lasted #g days1 priests carried #g trumpets1 ,jericho was compassed #g times1 ,naaman bathed #g times in the ,jordan1 a servant bowed #g times to his lord and so on4 ,as to the numeral #aj1 the ,law had #aj commandments1 the tabernacle had #aj curtains1 #aj pillars1 #aj sockets4 ,after the ,israelites had tempted the ,lord #aj times1 they were condemned to die in the wilderness4 ,ten plagues were inflicted on the ,egyptians4 ,in the matter of taxation1 the herd was divided into #aj parts and one part set aside for the ,lord4 ,when ,nebuchadnezzar tested ,daniel and his companions1 he found them #aj times better than all the magicians and astrologers4 ,thus we see plainly that the numerals #g and #aj conveyed the idea of completeness and perfection to the ,hebrew mind4 ,sidenote3 ,b4,c4 #fjc4 #ac4 ,then let our countenances be looked upon before thee1 and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat3 and as thou seest1 deal with thy servants4 #ad4 ,so he consented to them in this matter1 and proved them ten days4 #ae4 ,and at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat4 #af4 ,thus ,melzar took away the portion of their meat1 and the wine that they should drink2 and gave them pulse4 #ag4 ,as for these four children1 ,god gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom3 and ,daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams4 --,behold art thou wiser than ,daniel4 ,ezekiel ,,xxviii4 #c4 #ah4 ,now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in1 then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before ,nebuchadnezzar4 --,at the end of the #c years spoken of in verse #e4 #ai4 ,and the king communed with them2 and among them all was found none like ,daniel1 ,hananiah1 ,mishael1 and ,azariah3 therefore stood they before the king4 #bj4 ,and in all matters of wisdom and understanding1 that the king enquired of them1 he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm4 #ba4 ,and ,daniel continued even unto the first year of king ,cyrus4 ,cyrus began to reign1 as king of ,persia in ,b4,c4 #eeh1 just twenty years prior to his conquest of ,babylon in ,b4,c4 #ech4 ,the verse of course refers to the first year of his reign as king of ,babylon4 ,in the following chapter the narrative goes back to ,b4,c4 #fjc which as already explained was the #bnd year of ,nebuchadnezzar's individual reign4 ,his father ,nabopolassar was still on the throne in ,b4,c4 #fjf1 but on his death in ,b4,c4 #fje ,nebuchadnezzar returned at once to ,babylon and was made king1 with full authority4 ,,chapter ,,ii4 ,,hebrew ,,and ,,syriac4 ,sidenote3 ,b4,c4 #fjc4 #a4 ,and in the second year of the reign of ,nebuchadnezzar1 ,nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams1 wherewith his spirit was troubled1 and his sleep brake from him4 #b4 ,then the king commanded to call the magicians1 and the astrologers1 and the sorcerers1 and the ,chaldeans1 for to show the king his dreams4 ,so they came and stood before the king4 #c4 ,and the king said unto them1 ,i have dreamed a dream1 and my spirit was troubled to know the dream4 ,from this point to the end of the ,,vi chapter ,daniel wrote in the ,syriac language4 ,the rest of the book was written in ,hebrew4 ,in our own day men of affairs converse and write in several languages4 ,evidently one who was fitted to preside over #abj princes had many languages at his command4 #d4 ,then spake the ,chaldeans to the king in ,syriack1 ,o king1 live for ever2 tell thy servants the dream1 and we will shew the interpretation4 #e4 ,the king answered and said to the ,chaldeans1 ,the thing is gone from me3 if ye will not make known unto me the dream1 with the interpretation thereof1 ye shall be cut in pieces1 and your houses shall be made a dunghill4 #f4 ,but if ye shew the dream1 and the interpretation thereof1 ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour3 therefore shew me the dream1 and the interpretation thereof4 #g4 ,they answered again and said1 ,let the king tell his servants the dream1 and we will shew the interpretation of it4 #h4 ,the king answered and said1 ,i know of certainty that ye would gain the time1 because ye see the thing is gone from me4 #i4 ,but if ye will not make known unto me the dream1 there is but one decree for you3 for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me1 till the time be changed3 therefore tell me the dream1 and ,i shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof4 #aj4 ,the ,chaldeans answered before the king1 and said1 ,there is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter3 therefore there is no king1 lord1 nor ruler1 that asked such things at any magician1 or astrologer1 or ,chaldean4 #aa4 ,and it is a rare thing that the king requireth1 and there is none other that can shew it before the king1 except the gods1 whose dwelling is not with flesh4 #ab4 ,for this cause the king was angry and very furious1 and commanded to destroy all the wise men of ,babylon4 #ac4 ,and the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain2 and they sought ,daniel and his fellows to be slain4 #ad4 ,then ,daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to ,arioch the captain of the king's guard1 which was gone forth to slay the wise men of ,babylon3 #ae4 ,he answered and said to ,arioch the king's captain1 ,why is the decree so hasty from the king8 ,then ,arioch made the thing known to ,daniel4 #af4 ,then ,daniel went in1 and desired of the king that he would give him time1 and that he would shew the king the interpretation4 #ag4 ,then ,daniel went to his house1 and made the thing known to ,hananiah1 ,mishael1 and ,azariah1 his companions3 #ah4 ,that they would desire mercies of the ,god of heaven concerning this secret2 that ,daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of ,babylon4 #ai4 ,then was the secret revealed unto ,daniel in a night vision4 ,then ,daniel blessed the ,god of heaven4 #bj4 ,daniel answered and said1 ,blessed be the name of ,god for ever and ever3 for wisdom and might are his3 #ba4 ,and he changeth the times and the seasons3 he removeth kings1 and setteth up kings3 he giveth wisdom unto the wise1 and knowledge to them that know understanding3 #bb4 ,he revealeth the deep and secret things3 he knoweth what is in the darkness1 and the light dwelleth with him4 #bc4 ,i thank thee1 and praise thee1 ,o thou ,god of my fathers1 who hast given me wisdom and might and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee3 for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter4 #bd4 ,therefore ,daniel went in unto ,arioch1 whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of ,babylon3 he went and said thus unto him2 ,destroy not the wise men of ,babylon3 bring me in before the king1 and ,i will shew unto the king the interpretation4 #be4 ,then ,arioch brought in ,daniel before the king in haste1 and said thus unto him1 ,i have found a man of the captives of ,judah1 that will make known unto the king the interpretation4 #bf4 ,the king answered and said to ,daniel1 whose name was ,belteshazzar1 ,art thou able to make known unto me the dream which ,i have seen1 and the interpretation thereof8 #bg4 ,daniel answered in the presence of the king1 and said1 ,the secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men1 the astrologers1 the magicians1 the soothsayers1 shew unto the king2 #bh4 ,but there is a ,god in heaven that revealeth secrets1 and maketh known to the king ,nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days4 ,thy dream1 and the visions of thy head upon thy bed1 are these3 #bi4 ,as for thee1 ,o king1 thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed1 what should come to pass hereafter3 and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass4 #cj4 ,but as for me1 this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that ,i have more than any living1 but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king1 and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart4 #ca4 ,thou1 ,o king1 sawest1 and behold a great image4 ,this great image1 whose brightness was excellent1 stood before thee2 and the form thereof was terrible4 #cb4 ,this image's head was of fine gold1 his breast and his arms of silver1 his belly and his thighs of brass1 #cc4 ,his legs of iron1 his feet part of iron and part of clay4 #cd4 ,thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands1 which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay1 and brake them to pieces4 #ce4 ,then was the iron1 the clay1 the brass1 the silver1 and the gold1 broken to pieces together1 and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors2 and the wind carried them away1 that no place was found for them3 and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain1 and filled the whole earth4 #cf4 ,this is the dream2 and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king4 #cg4 ,thou1 ,o king1 art a king of kings3 for the ,god of heaven hath given thee a kingdom1 power1 and strength1 and glory4 #ch4 ,and wheresoever the children of men dwell1 the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand1 and hath made thee ruler over them all4 ,thou art this head of gold4 #ci4 ,and after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee --the ,medo-,persian-- and another third kingdom of brass1 which shall bear rule over all the earth --the ,macedonian4 #dj4 ,and the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron3 --the ,roman ,empire-- forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things3 and as iron that breaketh all these1 shall it break in pieces and bruise4 #da4 ,and whereas thou sawest the feet and toes1 part of potters' clay1 and part of iron1 the kingdom shall be divided2 but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron1 forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay4 #db4 ,and as the toes of the feet were part of iron1 and part of clay1 so the kingdom shall be partly strong1 and partly broken4 #dc4 ,and whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay1 they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men3 but they shall not cleave one to another1 even as iron is not mixed with clay4 #dd4 ,and in the days of these kings shall the ,god of heaven set up a kingdom1 which shall never be destroyed3 and the kingdom shall not be left to other people1 but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms1 and it shall stand for ever4 ,the birth of ,christ took place in ,b4,c4 #b1 in the palmiest days of the ,roman ,empire4 ,the angel ,gabriel declared1 thou shalt call his name ,jesus4 ,he shall be great and shall be called the ,son of the ,highest2 and the ,lord ,god shall is1 that your ,god is a ,god of gods1 and a ,lord of kings1 and a revealer of secrets1 seeing thou couldest reveal this secret4 #dh4 ,then the king made ,daniel a great man1 and gave him many great gifts1 and made him ruler over the whole province of ,babylon1 and chief of the governors over all the wise men of ,babylon4 #di4 ,then ,daniel requested of the king1 and he set ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 over the affairs of the province of ,babylon3 but ,daniel sat in the gate of the king4 ,,chapter ,,iii4 ,,syriac4 ,sidenote3 ,b4,c4 #eic4 #a4 ,nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold1 whose height was threescore cubits1 and the breadth thereof six cubits3 he set it up in the plain of ,dura1 in the province of ,babylon4 --,the dream described in the previous chapter1 seems to have touched the inventive genius of king ,nebuchadnezzar in a way1 that inspired him to produce a mechanically perfect image--a casting of gold of priceless value--especially strong in every part1 and one in which there were no planes of weakness whatever4 ,an image that seemed to bid defiance to the course of events foreshadowed by the prophet ,daniel4 #b4 ,then ,nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes1 the governors1 and the captains1 the judges1 the treasurers1 the counsellors1 the sheriffs1 and all the rulers of the provinces1 to come to the dedication of the image which ,nebuchadnezzar the king had set up4 --,doubtless it was in response to this invitation that ,zedekiah visited ,babylon in the #dth year of his reign4 ,jer4 ,,li4 #ei to #fd4 #c4 ,then the princes1 the governors1 and captains1 the judges1 the treasurers1 the counsellors1 the sheriffs1 and all the rulers of the provinces1 were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that ,nebuchadnezzar the king had set up2 and they stood before the image that ,nebuchadnezzar had set up4 #d4 ,then an herald cried aloud1 ,to you it is commanded1 ,o people1 nations1 and languages1 #e4 ,that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet1 flute1 harp1 sackbut1 psaltery1 dulcimer1 and all kinds of musick1 ye fall down and worship the golden image that ,nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up4 --,a monarch so wealthy and whose sway covered so many lands1 must have had at his command musicians1 highly skilled in the use of a great variety of musical instruments1 gathered both from ,europe and ,asia4 #f4 ,and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace4 #g4 ,therefore at that time1 when all the people heard the sound of the cornet1 flute1 harp1 sackbut1 psaltery1 and all kinds of musick1 all the people1 the nations1 and the languages1 fell down1 and worshipped the golden image that ,nebuchadnezzar the king had set up4 #h4 ,wherefore at that time certain ,chaldeans came near1 and accused the ,jews4 ,at the time of the ,babylonian captivity the ,hebrews began to be known as ,jews1 or inhabitants of ,judea4 #i4 ,they spake and said to the king ,nebuchadnezzar1 ,o king1 live for ever4 #aj4 ,thou1 ,o king1 hast made a decree1 that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet1 flute1 harp1 sackbut1 psaltery1 and dulcimer1 and all kinds of musick1 shall fall down and worship the golden image3 #aa4 ,and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth1 that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace4 #ab4 ,there are certain ,jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of ,babylon1 ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego2 these men1 ,o king1 have not regarded thee3 they serve not thy gods1 nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up4 #ac4 ,then ,nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego4 ,then they brought these men before the king4 #ad4 ,nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them1 ,is it true1 ,o ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 do not ye serve my gods1 nor worship the golden image which ,i have set up8 #ae4 ,now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet1 flute1 harp1 sackbut1 psaltery1 and dulcimer1 and all kinds of musick1 ye fall down and worship the image which ,i have made2 well3 but if ye worship not1 ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace2 and who is that ,god that shall deliver you out of my hands8 #af4 ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 answered and said to the king1 ,o ,nebuchadnezzar1 we are not careful to answer thee in this matter4 #ag4 ,if it be so1 our ,god whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace1 and he will deliver us out of thine hand1 ,o king4 #ah4 ,but if not1 be it known unto thee1 ,o king1 that we will not serve thy gods1 nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up4 #ai4 ,then was ,nebuchadnezzar full of fury1 and the form of his visage was changed against ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego3 therefore he spake1 and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated4 --,or1 #h times as hot as the usual temperature4 ,the numeral #g expressed the utmost intensity known to the king4 #bj4 ,and he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace4 #ba4 ,then these men were bound in their coats1 their hosen1 and their hats1 and their other garments1 and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace4 #bb4 ,therefore because the king's commandment was urgent1 and the furnace exceeding hot1 the flame of the fire slew those men that took up ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego4 --,this seems to have been what is technically called back-draught1 which those who are skilled in feeding furnaces are careful to guard against1 but which a soldier knows nothing about4 #bc4 ,and these three men1 ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace4 #bd4 ,then ,nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied1 and rose up in haste1 and spake1 and said unto his counsellors1 ,did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire8 ,they answered and said unto the king1 ,true1 ,o king4 #be4 ,he answered and said1 ,lo1 ,i see four men loose1 walking in the midst of the fire1 and they have no hurt2 and the form of the fourth is like the ,son of ,god4 #bf4 ,then ,nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace1 and spake1 and said1 ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 ye servants of the most high ,god1 come forth1 and come hither4 ,then ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 came forth of the midst of the fire4 #bg4 ,and the princes1 governors1 and captains1 and the king's counsellors1 being gathered together1 saw these men1 upon whose bodies the fire had no power1 nor was an hair of their head singed1 neither were their coats changed1 nor the smell of fire had passed on them4 #bh4 ,then ,nebuchadnezzar spake1 and said1 ,blessed be the ,god of ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 who hath sent his angel1 and delivered his servants that trusted in him1 and have changed the king's word1 and yielded their bodies1 that they might not serve nor worship any god1 except their own ,god4 #bi4 ,therefore ,i make a decree1 ,that every people1 nation1 and language1 which speak any thing amiss against the ,god of ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 shall be cut in pieces1 and their houses shall be made a dunghill3 because there is no other ,god that can deliver after this sort4 #cj4 ,then the king promoted ,shadrach1 ,meshach1 and ,abed-nego1 in the province of ,babylon4 ,,chapter ,,iv4 ,,syriac4 #a4 ,nebuchadnezzar the king1 unto all people1 nations1 and languages1 that dwell in all the earth2 ,peace be multiplied unto kingdom1 and his dominion is from generation to generation4 #d4 ,i ,nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house1 and flourishing in my palace3 #e4 ,i saw a dream which made me afraid1 and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me4 #f4 ,therefore made ,i a decree to bring in all the wise men of ,babylon before me1 that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream4 #g4 ,then came in the magicians1 the astrologers1 the ,chaldeans1 and the soothsayers3 and ,i told the dream before them2 but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof4 #h4 ,but at the last ,daniel came in before me1 whose name was ,belteshazzar1 according to the name of my god1 and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods3 and before him ,i told the dream1 saying1 #i4 ,o ,belteshazzar1 master of the magicians1 because ,i know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee1 and no secret troubleth thee1 tell me the visions of my dream that ,i have seen1 and the interpretation thereof4 #aj4 ,thus were the visions of mine head in my bed2 ,i saw1 and behold a tree in the midst of the earth1 and the height thereof was great4 #aa4 ,the tree grew1 and was strong1 and the height thereof reached unto heaven1 and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth3 #ab4 ,the leaves thereof were fair1 and the fruit thereof much1 and in it was meat for all3 the beasts of the field had shadow under it1 and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof1 and all flesh was fed of it4 #ac4 ,i saw in the visions of my head upon my bed1 and1 behold1 a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven2 #ad4 ,he cried aloud1 and said thus1 ,hew down the tree1 and cut off his branches1 shake off his leaves1 and scatter his fruit3 let the beasts get away from under it1 and the fowls from his branches3 #ae4 ,nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth1 even with a band of iron and brass1 in the tender grass of the field2 and let it be wet with the dew of heaven1 and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth3 #af4 ,let his heart be changed from man's1 and let a beast's heart be given unto him2 and let seven times pass over him4 ,in view of the fact that ,nebuchadnezzar's probation lasted for #ab months1 see verse #bi1 it is reasonable to suppose that his dementia lasted for #g months1 or until the moon had passed over him #g times1 a period long enough to permit a rank growth of both hair and nails and yet short enough for a regency to hold his kingdom together without losing hope of his final recovery4 ,besides the events in the years of his reign are too well known to admit of a much longer season of affliction4 #ag4 ,this matter is by the decree of the watchers1 and the demand by the word of the holy ones3 to the intent that the living may know that the most ,high ruleth in the kingdom of men1 and giveth it to whomsoever he will1 and setteth up over it the basest of men4 #ah4 ,this dream ,i king ,nebuchadnezzar have seen4 ,now thou1 ,o ,belteshazzar1 declare the interpretation thereof1 forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation3 but thou art able2 for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee4 #ai4 ,then ,daniel1 whose name was ,belteshazzar1 was astonied for one hour1 and his thoughts troubled him4 ,the king spake1 and said1 strong3 for thy greatness is grown1 and reacheth unto heaven1 and thy dominion to the end of the earth4 #bc4 ,and whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven1 and saying1 ,hew the tree down1 and destroy it2 yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth1 even with a band of iron and brass1 in the tender grass of the field2 and let it be wet with the dew of heaven1 and let his portion be with the beasts of the field1 till seven times pass over him2 #bd4 ,this is the interpretation1 ,o king1 and this is the decree of the most ,high1 which is come upon my lord the king3 #be4 ,that they shall drive thee from men1 and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field1 and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen1 and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven1 and seven times shall pass over thee1 till thou know that the most ,high ruleth in the kingdom of men1 and giveth it to whomsoever he will4 #bf4 ,and whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots2 thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee1 after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule4 #bg4 ,wherefore1 ,o king1 let my counsel be acceptable unto thee1 and break off thy sins by righteousness1 and thine iniquities by shewing mercies to the poor2 if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity4 #bh4 ,all this came upon the king ,nebuchadnezzar4 #bi4 ,at the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of ,babylon4 #cj4 ,the king spake1 and said1 ,is not this great ,babylon1 that ,i have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power1 and for the honour of my majesty8 #ca4 ,while the word was in the king's mouth1 there fell a voice from heaven1 saying1 ,o king ,nebuchadnezzar1 to thee it is spoken2 ,the kingdom is departed from thee4 #cb4 ,and they shall drive thee from men1 and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field3 they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen1 and seven times shall pass over thee1 until thou know that the most ,high ruleth in the kingdom of men1 and giveth it to whomsoever he will4 #cc4 ,the same hour was the thing fulfilled upon ,nebuchadnezzar3 and he was driven from men1 and did eat grass as oxen1 and his body was wet with the dew of heaven1 till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers1 and his nails like birds' claws4 #cd4 ,and at the end of the days ,i ,nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven1 and mine understanding returned unto me and ,i blessed the most ,high1 and ,i praised and honoured him that liveth for ever1 whose dominion is an everlasting dominion1 and his kingdom is from generation to generation3 #ce4 ,and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing3 and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven1 and among the inhabitants of the throws much light on the affairs of the ,chaldean court during the last years of the joint-reign4 ,it reads like a nice piece of detective work4 #b4 ,belshazzar1 whiles he tasted the wine1 commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father ,nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in ,jerusalem2 that the king1 and his princes1 his wives1 and his concubines1 might drink fingers of a man's hand1 and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace3 and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote4 #f4 ,then the king's countenance were conducted by ,cambyses in the ,temple of the ,sceptre of the world1 and his free will offerings aggregated ,ten times the usual amount1 a most appropriate tribute to the daughter of ,nebuchadnezzar1 that wonderful warrior1 engineer and man of letters4 #aa4 ,there is a man in thy kingdom1 in whom is the spirit of the holy gods2 and in the days of thy father light and understanding ,darius signed the writing and the decree4 #aj4 ,now when ,daniel knew that the writing was signed1 he went into his house2 and his windows being open in his chamber toward ,jerusalem1 he kneeled upon his knees three times a day1 and prayed1 and gave thanks before his ,god1 as he did aforetime4 #aa4 ,then these men assembled1 and found ,daniel praying and making supplication before his ,god4 #ab4 ,then they came near1 and spake before the king concerning the king's decree2 ,hast thou not signed a decree1 that every man that shall ask a petition of any ,god or man within thirty days1 save of thee1 ,o king1 shall be cast into the den of lions8 ,the king answered and said1 ,the thing is true1 according to the law of the ,medes and ,persians1 which altereth not4 #ac4 ,then answered they and said before the king1 ,that ,daniel1 which is of the children of the captivity of ,judah1 regardeth not thee1 ,o king1 nor the decree that thou hast signed1 but maketh his petition three times a day4 these men assembled unto the king1 and said unto the king1 ,know1 ,o king1 that the law of the ,medes and ,persians is1 ,that no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed4 #af4 ,then the king commanded1 and they brought ,daniel1 and cast him into the den of lions4 ,now the king spake and said unto ,daniel1 ,thy ,god whom thou servest continually1 he will deliver thee4 #ag4 ,and a stone was brought1 and laid upon the mouth of the den2 and the king sealed it with his own signet1 and with the signet of his lords2 that the purpose might not be changed concerning ,daniel4 #ah4 ,then the king went to his palace1 and passed the night fasting3 neither were instruments of musick brought before him3 and his sleep went from him4 #ai4 ,then the king arose very early in the morning1 and went in haste unto the den of lions4 #bj4 ,and when he came to the den1 he cried with a lamentable voice unto ,daniel3 and the king spake and said to ,daniel1 ,o ,daniel1 servant of the shut the lions' mouths1 that they have not hurt me3 forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me2 and also before thee1 ,o king1 have ,i done no hurt4 #bc4 ,then was the king exceeding glad for #c4 ,and four great beasts came up from the sea1 diverse one from another4 --,symbolical of ,four powerful dynasties4-- ,sidenote3 ,b4,c4 #dij4 #d4 ,the first was like a lion1 and had eagle's wings3 --,medo-,persian empire4-- ,i beheld till the wings thereof were plucked1 --,persia defeated by ,greece at ,marathon4-- and it was lifted up from the earth1 and made stand upon the feet as a man1 and a man's heart was given unto it4 --,was transformed by ,greek art and civilization4 #e4 ,and behold another beast1 a second1 like to a bear1 --,the ,hellenes1 or ,greece and her colonies in their king of ,macedon subjugated the disunited ,greek ,states at the battle of ,chaeronea in ,b4,c4 #cch1 and ,alexander the ,great conquered a kingdom extending from ,greece to ,india in ,b4,c4 #ccf4 #g4 ,after this ,i saw in the night visions1 and behold a fourth beast1 dreadful and terrible1 --,roman ,empire4-- and strong exceedingly2 and it had great iron teeth3 it devoured and brake in pieces1 and ,the fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth1 which shall be diverse from all kingdoms1 and shall devour the whole earth1 and shall tread it down1 and break it in pieces4 #bd4 ,and the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise3 and another shall rise after them2 and he shall be diverse from the first1 and he shall subdue three kings4 #be4 ,and he --in the person of his descendants-- shall speak great words against the most ,high1 and shall wear out the saints of the most ,high1 and think to change times and laws3 and they shall be given unto his hand until a be given to the people of the saints of the most ,high1 whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom1 and all dominions shall serve and obey him4 #bh4 ,hitherto is the end of the matter4 ,as for me ,great1 after ,greece was conquered by the ,macedonians ,b4,c4 #ccd-- come close unto the ram --,battles of ,granicus and ,issus4-- and he was moved with choler against him1 and smote the ram1 and brake his two horns1 and there was no power in the ram to stand before him2 --,alexander was greatly pleased when shown this prophecy--,josephus #aa4 #h4 #e4-- but he cast him down to the ground and stamped upon him1 and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand4 --,b4,c4 #cca ,alexander defeated the ,persians on the plain of ,babylon4 ,he then pushed on to ,india and conquered the ,punjaub1 land of the five rivers4 #h4 ,therefore the he-goat waxed very great3 --,alexander the ,great also conquered ,egypt1 ,palestine1 ,phoenicia and ,tyre4 ,he built ,alexandria and ruled from ,greece to the ,ganges4-- and when he was strong1 the great horn was broken2 --,alexander died in ,india of intemperance and left no successor4-- and for it came up four notable ones toward the #d winds of heaven4 --,alexander's kingdom fell to his #d generals3 ,antigonus took ,persia1 ,seleucus took ,syria1 ,ptolemy took ,egypt1 ,cassander took ,macedon4 #i4 ,and out of one of them --,seleucus-- came forth a little horn --kingdom of the ,seleucid-- which waxed exceeding great1 toward the south --,egypt-- and toward the east --between the ,hellespont and the ,indus-- and toward the pleasant land4 --,palestine4 #aj4 ,and it waxed great --under ,antiochus ,,iii1 the ,great-- even to the host of heaven2 --the ,jewish nation-- and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground1 --,judah and ,benjamin-- and stamped upon them4 #aa4 ,yea it --under king ,antiochus ,epiphanes-- magnified itself1 even to the ,prince of the host2 --,judah1 and the capital city ,jerusalem-- and it took away from him the continual burnt offering1 and the place of his ,sanctuary was cast down4 --,r4,v4 #ab4 ,and the host was given over to it together with the continual burnt offering through transgression2 --,antiochus also set up heathen altars in every village and town1 on which the ,jews were obliged to sacrifice swine's flesh daily-- and it cast down the truth to the ground1 and it did its pleasure and prospered4 --,r4,v4 #ac4 ,then ,i heard one saint speaking and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake3-- ,how long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice and the transgression of desolation1 to give both the ,sanctuary and the host --the ,national government-- to be trodden under foot8 #ad4 ,and he said unto me1 ,unto two thousand and three hundred days2 then shall the sanctuary be cleansed4 --,the period amounted to #cjh yrs4 #f mos4 #ba days and extended from ,oct4 #adth ,b4,c4 #dej to ,may #dth ,b4,c4 #ada1 at which time the ,,temple was ,,cleansed by ,simon ,maccabeus4 ,for a full explanation see ,,notes ,c4 and ,d4 #ae4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,i1 even ,i ,daniel1 had seen the vision1 and sought for the meaning1 then1 behold1 there stood before me as the appearance of a man4 #af4 ,and ,i heard a man's voice between the banks of ,ulai1 which called1 and said1 ,gabriel1 make this man to understand the vision4 #ag4 ,so he came near where ,i stood3 and when he came1 ,i was afraid1 and fell upon my face3 but he said unto me1 ,understand1 ,o son of man3 for at the time of the end shall be the vision4 #ah4 ,now as he was speaking with me1 ,i was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground3 but he touched me1 and set me upright4 #ai4 ,and he said1 ,behold1 ,i will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation3 for at the time appointed the end shall be4 #bj4 ,the ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of ,media and ,persia4 #ba4 ,and the rough goat is the king of ,grecia3 and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king4 --,alexander the ,great who united ,greece and ,macedon 7verse #h74 #bb4 ,now that being broken1 whereas four stood up for it1 four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation1 but not in his power4 #bc4 ,and in the latter time of their kingdom1 when the transgressors are come to the full1 --the ,jewish people-- a king of fierce countenance1 and understanding dark sentences shall stand up4 --,antiochus ,,iii1 the ,great1 who subjected ,judea and greatly oppressed the ,jewish people4 ,his times were noted for corruption and crime4 #bd4 ,and his power shall be mighty1 but not by his own power3 and he shall destroy wonderfully1 and shall prosper1 and practise1 and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people4 #be4 ,and through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand2 and he shall magnify himself in his heart1 and by peace shall destroy many3 he shall also stand up against the ,prince of princes2 --the ,roman ,empire had no kings and therefore its rulers were spoken of as ,princes4 ,it was a favorite term for a king to designate himself as ,king of ,kings4 ,the same thought could be expressed as regards the ,romans1 by the words ,prince of ,princes-- but he shall be broken without hand4 --,antiochus died from intemperance4 #bf4 ,and the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true3 wherefore shut thou up the vision2 for it shall be for many days4 #bg4 ,and ,i ,daniel fainted1 and was sick certain days2 afterward ,i rose up1 and did the king's business2 and ,i was astonished at the vision1 but none understood it4 ,,chapter ,,ix4 ,,hebrew4 ,sidenote3 ,b4,c4 #ech-g4 #a4 ,in the first year of ,darius the son of ,ahasuerus1 of the seed of the ,medes1 which was made king over the realm of the ,chaldeans2 --by ,cyrus4 #b4 ,in the first year of his reign ,i ,daniel understood by books the number of the years1 whereof the word of the ,,lord came to ,jeremiah the prophet1 that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of ,jerusalem4 --,for thus saith the ,lord1 that after #gj years be accomplished at ,babylon ,i will visit you1 and perform my good word toward you1 in causing you to return to this place4 ,jeremiah ,,xxix4 #aj4 #c4 ,and ,i set my face unto the ,lord ,god1 to seek by prayer and supplications1 with fasting1 and sackcloth1 and ashes3 #d4 ,and ,i prayed unto the ,lord my ,god1 and made my confession1 and said1 ,o ,lord1 the great and dreadful ,god1 keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him1 and to them that keep his commandments2 #e4 ,we have sinned1 and have committed iniquity1 and have done wickedly1 and have rebelled1 even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments3 #f4 ,neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets1 which spake in thy name to our kings1 our princes1 and our fathers1 and to all the people of the land4 #g4 ,o ,lord1 righteousness belongeth unto thee1 but unto us confusion of faces1 as at this day2 to the men of ,judah1 and to the inhabitants of ,jerusalem1 and unto all ,israel1 that are near1 and that are far off1 through all the countries whither thou hast driven them1 because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee4 #h4 ,o ,lord1 to us belongeth confusion of face1 to our kings1 to our princes1 and to our fathers1 because we have sinned against thee4 #i4 ,to the ,lord our ,god belong mercies and forgivenesses1 though we have rebelled against him2 #aj4 ,neither have we obeyed the voice of the ,,lord our ,god1 to walk in his laws1 which he set before us by his servants the prophets4 #aa4 ,yea1 all ,israel have trangressed thy law1 even by departing1 that they might not obey thy voice2 therefore the curse is poured upon us1 and the oath that is written in the law of ,moses the servant of ,god1 because we have sinned against him4 #ab4 ,and he hath confirmed his words1 which he spake against us1 and against our judges that judged us1 by bringing upon us a great evil3 for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon ,jerusalem4 #ac4 ,as it is written in the law of ,moses1 all this evil is come upon us3 yet made we not our prayer before the ,,lord our ,god1 that we might turn from our iniquities1 and understand thy truth4 #ad4 ,therefore hath the ,,lord watched upon the evil1 and brought it upon us3 for the ,,lord our ,god is righteous in all his works which he doeth3 for we obeyed not his voice4 #ae4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord our ,god1 that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of ,egypt with a mighty hand1 and hast gotten thee renown1 as at this day2 we have sinned1 we have done wickedly4 #af4 ,o ,lord1 according to all thy righteousness1 ,i beseech thee1 let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city ,jerusalem1 thy holy mountain3 because of our sins1 and for the iniquities of our fathers1 ,jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us4 #ag4 ,now therefore1 ,o our ,god1 hear the prayer of thy servant1 and his supplications1 and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate1 for the ,lord's sake4 #ah4 ,o my ,god1 incline thine ear1 and hear2 open thine eyes1 and behold our desolations1 and the city which is called by thy name3 for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses1 but for thy great mercies4 #ai4 ,o ,lord1 hear2 ,o ,lord1 forgive2 ,o ,lord1 hearken and do2 defer not1 for thine own sake1 ,o my ,god3 for thy city and thy people are called by thy name4 #bj4 ,and whiles ,i was speaking1 and praying1 and confessing my sin and the sin of my people ,israel1 and presenting my supplication before the ,,lord my ,god for the holy mountain of my ,god2 #ba4 ,yea1 whiles ,i was speaking in prayer1 even the man ,gabriel1 whom ,i had seen in the vision at the beginning1 --,daniel ,,viii4 #af-- being caused to fly swiftly1 touched me about the time of the evening oblation4 #bb4 ,and he informed me1 and talked with me1 and said1 ,o ,daniel1 ,i am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding4 #bc4 ,at the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth1 and ,i am come to shew thee2 for thou art greatly beloved3 therefore understand the matter1 and consider the vision4 ,the next four verses should be read as a whole4 ,the burden of their message is the date of ,messiah's sacrifice1 the time when he would be cut off1 but not for himself4 ,an event of supreme moment to the entire human race4 ,in making this revelation the heavenly visitor took the ,sabbatic period of #g years as his standard of time4 ,the ,greeks had a system of ,olympiads1 each #d years in length4 ,in our day the standard measure is one year4 ,we must therefore lay aside our ordinary line of thought and in reading the next #d verses we must accustom ourselves to thinking in ,,periods ,,of #g ,,years ,,each and remember that whenever an event took place it happened in some period #g years in length4 ,so that when the angel spoke of the going forth of the commandment he pointed to a ,sabbatic period of #g years1 not to a certain day1 hour1 or minute of a given year1 but to a group of #g years as a whole1 in a word to a certain week1 when therefore1 he spoke of more weeks to follow the additional ones came in regular succession and the sum of the series must of necessity equal the full time revealed4 ,the starting point was plainly the river ,ahava and the time of their ,exodus from ,persia was just #b days prior to the ,passover of ,b4,c4 #deh--see ,,note ,e4 ,the first week therefore ended in ,b4,c4 #dea1 the second week in ,b4,c4 #ddd1 the third in #dcg and so on1 until the end of the eighth week in ,b4,c4 #djb4 ,up to that time the ,jews were favored by the ,persian government1 but ,persia lost her power and influence at the battle of ,cunaxa in ,b4,c4 #dja4 ,then followed #fb ,sabbatic periods1 or #dcd years1 ending with the ,passover of ,a4,d4 #cc at which time ,messiah was cut off4 ,the three periods1 #a week plus #g weeks plus #fb weeks make a total of #gj weeks and prove the accuracy of the heavenly prediction4 #bd4 ,seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city1 to finish the transgression1 and to make an end of sins1 and to make reconciliation for iniquity1 and to bring in everlasting righteousness1 and to seal up the vision and prophecy1 and to anoint the most ,holy4 #be4 ,know therefore and understand1 that from the --week of the-- going forth of the commandment --of ,artaxerxes-- to restore and to build ,jerusalem unto ,messiah the ,prince shall be #g weeks1 and threescore and two weeks3 the street shall be built again1 and the wall1 even in troublous times4 --,how troublous is told by ,nehemiah where he says3 we returned all of us to the wall1 every one unto his work4 ,and it came to pass from that time forth1 the half of my servants wrought in the work and the other half of them held both the spears1 the shields1 and the bows and the coats of mail4 #bf4 ,and after threescore and two weeks shall ,messiah be cut off1 but not for himself3 and the people of the prince that shall come --the ,romans under ,petronius in ,a4,d4 #dj and under ,titus in ,a4,d4 #ff-- shall destroy the city and the sanctuary2 and the end thereof shall be with a flood1 and unto the end of the war desolations are determined4 --or1 it shall be cut off by desolations4 ,josephus says that #a1ajj1jjj perished in the siege and #ig1jjj were carried away captive4 #bg4 ,and he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week3 and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease1 --,this one week was divided into #b parts of #c years each4 ,the first half covered the ,ministry of the ,messiah and therefore was embraced within the #gj weeks4 ,the last half extended beyond the #gj weeks and ended in ,a4,d4 #cf4 ,it was a period of remarkable growth in the infant church2 ,pilate however ceased to be procurator in ,a4,d4 #cf and the persecution described in the ,v,i,i,ith chapter of ,acts immediately set in4-- and for the overspreading of abomination he shall make it desolate1 --or1 upon the battlements shall be the idols of the desolator4 see also ,matt4 ,,xxiv4 #ae4-- even until the consummation1 and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate4 --,jerusalem was taken by the ,romans on the #bnd of ,sept4 ,a4,d4 #gj4 ,then the prophecy of ,ezekiel was fulfilled3--,i will scatter thee among the heathen and disperse thee in the countries4 ,,remarks4 ,to understand what follows1 all divisions of chapter and verse should be obliterated1 from this point to the end of the book4 ,the subject matter should be taken as descriptive of what ,daniel saw and heard by the side of the great river1 which is ,hiddekel in the third year of ,cyrus1 king of ,persia4 ,the description reminds us forcibly of the experiences of the apostle ,john and the apostle ,paul4 ,the vision had a twofold object3 first1 to reveal what shall befall thy people in the latter days1 and second1 to give additional information concerning ,messiah's kingdom said to be distant many days4 ,the entire eleventh chapter from verse #b to the end is devoted to the days following ,nehemiah's rule4 ,in the first four verses of ,chapter ,,xii4 we catch a glimpse of the coming kingdom1 also the destruction of ,jerusalem1 while verses #e to #ac set forth the coming of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,more than #bjj years prior to ,daniel's day1 the prophet ,joel had pointed to the same great event when he said3--,and it shall come to pass afterward1 that ,i will pour out my ,spirit upon all flesh2 and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy1 your old men shall dream dreams1 your young men shall see visions2 ,and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will ,i pour out my ,spirit4 ,joel ,,ii4 #bh1 also ,acts ,,ii4 #ag4 ,,chapter ,x4 ,,hebrew4 ,sidenote3 ,b4,c4 #ecf-e4 #a4 ,in the third year --third since the conquest of ,babylon1 but first in the personal reign over ,babylon-- of ,cyrus king of ,persia a thing was revealed unto ,daniel1 whose name was ,belteshazzar2 and the thing was true1 but the time appointed was long3 and he understood the thing1 and had understanding of the vision4 #b4 ,in those days ,i ,daniel was mourning three full weeks4 #c4 ,i ate no pleasant bread1 neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth1 neither did ,i anoint myself at all1 till three whole weeks were fulfilled4 #d4 ,and in the four and twentieth day of the first month1 as ,i was by the side of the great river1 which is ,hiddekel2 --,tigris is the modern name for the river ,hiddekel4 ,the period of ,daniel's mourning began on ,saturday1 ,march #cast1 ,b4,c4 #ecf1 and continued #c weeks until ,saturday1 ,april #bast4 ,meantime the ,passover occurred on ,thursday1 ,april #abth4 #e4 ,then ,i lifted up mine eyes1 and looked1 and behold a certain man clothed in linen1 whose loins were girded with fine gold of ,uphaz3 --,ophir-- #f4 ,his body also was like the beryl1 and his face as the appearance of lightning1 and his eyes as lamps of fire1 and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass1 and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude4 --,one like unto the ,son of man1 clothed with a garment down to the foot1 and girt about the paps with a golden girdle4 ,his head and his hairs were white like wool1 as white as snow2 and his eyes were as a flame of fire2 and his feet like unto fine brass1 as if they burned in a furnace2 and his voice as the sound of many waters4 ,rev4 ,i4 #ac1 #ad1 #ae4 #g4 ,and ,i ,daniel alone saw the vision3 for the men that were with me saw not the vision2 but a great quaking fell upon them1 so that they fled to hide themselves4 --,and they that were with me saw indeed the light1 and were afraid2 but they heard not the voice of ,him that spake to me4 ,acts ,,xxii4 #i also ,,ix4 #g4 #h4 ,therefore ,i was left alone1 and saw this great vision1 and there remained no strength in me3 for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption1 and ,i retained no strength4 #i4 ,yet heard ,i the voice of his words3 and when ,i heard the voice of his words1 then was ,i in a deep sleep on my face1 and my face toward the ground4 ,daniel was completely overcome by the glory of this ,divine manifestation4 #aj4 ,and1 behold1 an hand touched me1 which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands4 ,the angel ,gabriel now appears on the scene1 and again assures ,daniel that he is greatly beloved and continues the kindly offices spoken of in ,daniel ,,viii4 #af4--;,,ix4 #ba1 #bb4 #aa4 ,and he said unto me1 ,o ,daniel1 a man greatly beloved1 understand the words that ,i speak unto thee1 and stand upright3 for unto thee am ,i now sent4 ,and when he had spoken this word unto me1 ,i stood trembling4 --,john was the beloved apostle1 ,john ,,xiii4 #bc and ,daniel the beloved prophet1 ,dan4 ,,ix4 #bc4 #ab4 ,then said he unto me1 ,fear not1 ,daniel3 for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand1 and to chasten thyself before thy ,god1 thy words were heard1 and ,i am come for thy words4 #ac4 ,but the prince of the kingdom of ,persia withstood me one and twenty days3 but1 lo1 ,michael1 one of the chief princes1 came to help me2 and ,i remained there with the kings of ,persia4 --,now in the first year of ,cyrus king of ,persia1 that the word of the ,lord spoken by the mouth of ,jeremiah might be accomplished1 the ,lord stirred up the spirit of ,cyrus king of ,persia1 that he made a proclamation4 ,,ii ,chron4 ,,xxxvi4 #bb4 #ad4 ,now ,i am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days3 for yet the vision is for many days4 #ae4 ,and when he had spoken such words unto me1 ,i set my face toward the ground1 and ,i became dumb4 #af4 ,and1 behold1 one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips3 then ,i opened my mouth1 and spake1 and said unto him that stood before me1 ,o my lord1 by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me1 and ,i have retained no strength4 #ag4 ,for how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord8 for as for me1 straightway there remained no strength in me1 neither is there breath left in me4 #ah4 ,then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man1 and he strengthened me1 #ai4 ,and said1 ,o man greatly beloved1 fear not3 peace be unto thee1 be strong1 yea1 be strong4 ,and when he had spoken unto me1 ,i was strengthened1 and said1 ,let my lord speak2 for thou hast strengthened me4 #bj4 ,then said he1 ,knowest thou wherefore ,i come unto thee8 and now will ,i return to fight with the prince of ,persia3 and when ,i am gone forth1 lo1 the prince of ,grecia shall come4 --,dan4 ,,viii4 #ba4 #ba4 ,but ,i will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth3 --the ,book of future events-- and there is none that holdeth with me in these things1 but ,michael your prince4 --,michael the archangel4 ,see ,jude #ith verse4--,the captain of the ,lord's host4 ,see ,joshua ,v4 #ae4--,michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels4 ,rev4 ,,xii4 #g4 ,the next chapter gives a bird's-eye view of the period covered by the #bcjj days4 ,for a full explanation see ,,note ,d4 ,,chapter ,,xi4 ,,hebrew4 #a4 ,also ,i --,gabriel-- in the first year of ,darius the ,mede1 even ,i1 stood to confirm and to strengthen him4 --,this does not indicate a change of date1 it simply declares that the same solicitude was now bestowed on ,cyrus1 as had been manifested toward his royal representative ,darius the ,mede1 when first placed on the throne of ,babylon by ,cyrus4 #b4 ,and now --in the third year since ,cyrus captured the city4 ,daniel ,x4 #a4-- will ,i show thee the truth4 ,behold there shall stand up yet --after the setting up of the sanctuary and the host1 ,b4,c4 #dde1 three kings in ,persia1 viz43 ,darius ,nothus1 ,artaxerxes ,mnemon1 and ,ochus1-- and the fourth --,darius ,codomannus-- shall be far richer than they all3 and by his strength and through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of ,grecia4 #c4 ,and a mighty king --,alexander the ,great-- shall stand up1 that shall rule with great dominion1 and do according to his will4 --from ,greece to ,india4 #d4 ,and when he shall stand up1 his kingdom shall be broken1 and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven2 --among his four generals2-- and not to his posterity1 nor according to his dominion which he ruled3 for his kingdom shall be plucked up1 even for others beside those4 #e4 ,and the king of the south --,ptolemy ,philadelphus1 king of ,egypt-- shall be strong1 and one of his princes2 and he shall be strong above him --,antiochus ,,ii-- and have dominion2 his dominion shall be a great dominion4 #f4 ,and in the end of the years --in the course of time-- they shall join themselves together2 for the king's daughter --,bernice-- of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement3 --,antiochus banished his own wife ,laodice and her children in favor of ,bernice-- but she shall not retain the power of the arm2 neither shall he stand1 nor his arm3 but she shall be given up --,antiochus after the death of ,ptolemy expelled ,bernice and recalled the rejected ,laodice4-- and they that brought her1 and he that begat her1 and he that strengthened her in these times4 #g4 ,but out of a branch of her roots --,ptolemy ,,ii1 called ,evergetes-- shall one stand up in his estate1 which shall come with an army1 and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north and shall deal against them and shall prevail3 --,laodice placed her son ,seleucus ,,ii on the throne4 ,ptolemy ,,iii made an expedition against ,syria1 slew ,laodice and conquered the realm from ,cilicia to the ,tigris4 #h4 ,and shall also carry captives into ,egypt their gods1 with their princes1 and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold --the booty was immense1 #bejj idols1 #djjj talents of gold1 etc4-- and he shall continue more years than the king of the north4 #i4 ,so the king of the south shall come into his kingdom1 and shall return into his own land4 #aj4 ,but his sons --,seleucus ,,iii and ,antiochus ,,iii1 the ,great-- shall be stirred up and shall assemble a multitude of great forces3 and one shall certainly come1 and overflow1 and pass through2 then shall he return1 and be stirred up1 even to his fortress4 #aa4 ,and the king of the south --,ptolemy ,,iv1 was luxurious and indolent-- shall be moved with choler1 and shall come forth and fight with him1 even with the king of the north3 and he shall set forth a great multitude3 but the multitude shall be given into his hand4 --,ptolemy defeated ,antiochus near ,gaza but did not follow up the victory4 #ab4 ,and when he hath taken away the multitude1 his heart shall be lifted up2 and he shall cast down many ten thousands3 but he shall not be strengthened by it4 #ac4 ,for the king of the north --,antiochus the ,great-- shall return1 and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former1 and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches4 #ad4 ,and in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south2 also the robbers of thy people --secret enemies of the ,jews-- shall exalt themselves to establish the vision2 but they shall fail4 #ae4 ,so the king of the north shall come1 and cast up a mount1 and take the most fenced cities2 and the arms of the south shall not withstand1 neither his chosen people1 neither shall there be any strength to withstand4 #af4 ,but he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will1 --the wars of ,antiochus the ,great-- and none shall stand before him3 and he shall stand in the glorious land --,palestine-- which by his hand shall be consumed4 #ag4 ,he shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom1 and upright ones with him2 thus shall he do3 and he shall give him the daughter of women1 corrupting her3 --,using marriage for political gain3 ,antiochus gave his daughter ,cleopatra in marriage to ,ptolemy ,epiphanes1 hoping for benefit1 but it turned out otherwise-- but she shall not stand on his side1 neither be for him4 #ah4 ,after this he shall turn his face unto the ,isles1 and shall take many3 but a prince --a ,roman ,general-- for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease2 without his own reproach --,antiochus said3--,asia did not concern the ,romans and he was not subject to their orders-- he shall cause it to turn upon him4 --,he was defeated by the ,romans1 at ,magnesia4 #ai4 ,then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land2 --pillage the temples-- but he shall stumble and fall1 and not be found4 --,antiochus the ,great was slain4 #bj4 ,then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom3 --his son ,seleucus ,philopater1 who sent out ,heliodorus and taxed the temples as well as the people-- but within a few days he shall be destroyed1 neither in anger1 nor in battle4 --,seleucus shortly after1 died in a mysterious manner4 #ba4 ,and in his estate shall stand up a vile person1 --,antiochus ,epiphanes-- to whom they shall not give the honor of the kingdom3 but he shall come in peaceably1 and obtain the kingdom by flatteries4 #bb4 ,and with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him1 and shall be broken2 yea1 also the prince of the covenant4 --,onias ,,iii1 the high priest was put to death by his order4 #bc4 ,and after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully3 for he shall come up1 and shall become strong with a small people4 #bd4 ,he shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province2 and he shall do that which his fathers have not done1 nor his father's fathers2 he shall scatter among them the prey1 and spoil1 and riches3 yea1 and he shall forecast his devices against the strongholds even for a time4 #be4 ,and he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army2 and the king of the south --,ptolemy ,philometer-- shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army2 but he shall not stand3 for they shall forecast devices against him4 #bf4 ,yea1 they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him1 and his army shall overflow3 and many shall fall down slain4 #bg4 ,and both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief1 and they shall speak lies at one table --a pretended friendship-- but it shall not prosper3 for yet the end shall be at the time appointed4 #bh4 ,then shall he return into his land with great riches2 and his heart shall be against the holy covenant2 --the worship of ,jehovah-- and he shall do exploits1 and return to his own land4 #bi4 ,at the time appointed he shall return1 and come toward the south2 but it shall not be as the former1 or as the latter4 #cj4 ,for the ships of ,chittim --the fleet of the ,romans under ,laenas-- shall come against him3 therefore he shall be grieved1 and return1 and have indignation against the holy covenant3 so shall he do2 he shall even return1 and have intelligence with them --the ,samaritans-- that forsake the holy covenant4 #ca4 ,and arms shall stand on his part1 and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength1 --the ,temple-- and shall take away the daily sacrifice1 and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate4 --,antiochus ,epiphanes established idol-altars in every town and village of ,palestine1 and ordered a daily sacrifice of swine on the altars4 #cb4 ,and such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries3 but the people that do know their ,god shall be strong and do exploits4 --,mattathias and his #e sons1 the ,maccabees4 #cc4 ,and they that understand among the people shall ,every moment of this time was part of one great abomination4 ,counting each prophetic day as made up of #di ordinary days1 the #abij days bring us to ,may #bdth ,a4,d4 #cc--,,the ,,day ,,of and hour knoweth no man2 no1 not the angels of ,heaven4 ,matt4 ,,xxiv4 #cf4 ,,notes4 ,,jewish ,,independence ,,day4 ,the era of the ,seleucid among the ,greeks and ,eastern nations1 sometimes called the era of contracts1 dated from the capture of ,babylon by ,seleucus ,nicator1 ,oct4 #ast ,b4,c4 #cab4 ,the complete subjugation of the city followed #f months later1 and therefore the ,babylonians counted from the spring of ,b4,c4 #caa4 ,with this exception the former date has been generally regarded as the true epoch4 ,the years run as below3 ,,years ,,of ,,the ,,seleucid4 #ast year began ,oct4 ,b4,c4 #cab and ended ,oct4 ,b4,c4 #caa #bnd #caa #caj #crd #caj #cji #eth #cjh #cjg #ajth #cjc #cjb #ejth #bfc #bfb #ajjth #bac #bab #aejth #afc #afb #agjth #adc #adb #agast #adb #ada and so on4 ,we pause at the beginning of the #agast year because it was a year of great moment in the life of the ,jewish nation4 ,the deepest interest is focussed on the #bcrd day of the #bnd month when ,simon1 brother of ,judas ,maccabeus1 destroyed a great enemy out of ,israel1 and ,,cleansed the ,temple of its abominations4 ,he also ordained1 that the day should be observed ever after1 as a ,national holiday4--,i ,macc4 ,,xiii4 #ea4 ,we note that the #agast year1 like all others of the ,seleucid1 began with the month of ,october1 which was the first month of the ,macedonian calendar4 ,it was called ,hyperberetaeus1 the second month ,dius1 the third1 ,apellaeus and so on4 ,but the question that concerns us most is1 whether the writer of ,first ,maccabees actually reckoned by ,macedonian months8 ,a careful examination of the entire book shows that he mentioned #d ,hebrew months by name--,casleu1 ,adar1 ,elul and ,sabat--also that he clearly located another1 viz3--,tisri1 but not in a single instance did he mention the name of a ,macedonian month1 or refer to the ,macedonian calendar in any manner whatsoever4 ,that he did not regard ,october as being the ,,first month is plainly declared in ,i ,macc4 ,x4 #ba1 where he says3-- ,so in the ,,seventh month of the #afjth year1 at the feast of tabernacles1 ,jonathan put on the holy robe1 etc4 ,sept4_/,oct4 therefore was the ,,seventh month1 according to the usage of the writer of the ,first book of ,maccabees1 which gives the following succession3-- ,b4,c4 #adb ,sept4_/,oct41 the ,,seventh month ,,tisri ,oct4_/,nov41 ,,eighth ,marchesvan ,nov4_/,dec41 ,,ninth ,casleu ,dec4_/,jan41 ,,tenth ,tebeth ,b4,c4 #ada ,jan4_/,feb41 the ,,eleventh month ,shebat ,feb4_/,march1 ,,twelfth ,,adar ,mar4_/,april1 ,,first ,,nisan ,apr4_/,may1 ,,second ,,iyar ,the rest of the way is easy4 ,we have only to follow the ,jewish calendar of ,rabbi ,hillel ,,ii and we learn that the #bcrd day of the ,,second month corresponded with the #d,,th ,,day ,,of ,,may ,b4,c4 #ada1 the great day of ,national ,independence4 ,having thus far followed exclusively the years of the ,seleucid as common among ,greeks and ,orientals1 let us now turn to the system of the ,babylonians4 ,their era began1 as already explained1 with the spring of ,b4,c4 #caa4 ,accordingly1 their #agast year began with the spring of ,b4,c4 #ada1 and the ,,second month of course coincided with ,apr4_/,may1 or the ,jewish month ,iyar4 ,it matters not1 therefore1 whether you follow the system of the ,greeks or that of the ,babylonians1 you will arrive at the same goal1 viz3--,may #dth ,b4,c4 #ada4 ,one can hardly overestimate the importance of this discovery1 because a knowledge of the ,national ,independence day gives a fixed starting point for that mysterious group of ,,days--#bcjj1 #abij and #acce--;as revealed by the angel ,gabriel to ,daniel the ,prophet4 ,,note ,a4 ,,darius1 ,,or ,,cyaxares4 ,,daniel ,v4 #ca4 ,and ,darius the ,median took the kingdom1 being about threescore and two years old4 ,in the first verse of the #ith chapter we are told that ,darius was the son of ,ahasuerus1 the same ,assuerus spoken of in the #aeth verse of the #adth chapter of ,tobit1 the ,astyages of ,median history4 ,astyages was king of the ,medes and reigned for #ce years from ,b4,c4 #eic-eeh4 ,his son ,cyaxares ,josephus ,x4 #aa1 #d4 succeeded him on the throne and his daughter ,mandan married ,cambyses of ,persia4 ,their offspring was ,cyrus the ,great1 who thus represented the ,royal houses of both ,media and ,persia4 ,cyaxares therefore was the uncle of ,cyrus4 ,as a boy ,cyrus was brought up by his grandfather and accompanied his uncle on shooting expeditions4 ,a very strong attachment was formed with the latter so that in after years when ,cyrus deposed his grandfather1 in ,b4,c4 #eeh1 he made his uncle the king of ,media4 ,still later when ,cyrus took ,babylon and pacified the inhabitants he made his uncle ,cyaxares king pro tem1 who occupied the throne from ,b4,c4 #ech-ecf4 ,cyrus of course continued to be1 as the annalistic tablet relates1 the powerful king1 the king of ,babylon1 'the king of ,sumar and ,akkad'--the king of the four zones4 ,but the laws of ,persia as outlined by ,herodotus ,,vii4 #a4 #b4 and ,,iii4 #ff made it necessary for him to appoint a successor before starting out to war1 who would govern during his absence4 ,so we find1 after ,gobryas the governor of the country of ,ararat and the soldiers of ,cyrus1 without fighting entered ,babylon1 the country became submissive and attention could be directed elsewhere2 that when in the course of their march they arrived in the ,median territory ,cyrus turned off to visit ,cyaxares2 and after they had embraced each other1 ,cyrus first told ,cyaxares that there were domestics and palaces set apart for him in ,babylon1 that when he came thither he might have what was his own to come to4 ,xenophon ,,viii4 ,it is hard to imagine how ,cyrus could have paved the way more perfectly for the reign of his uncle ,cyaxares in ,babylon1 whom we believe was ,darius the ,mede of ,scripture4 ,his reign was of short duration1 but it came at a critical period in the history of the ,jews4 ,only two years remained to complete the ,babylonian captivity and ,divine influences were at work for the return of the chosen people4 ,daniel ,x4 #ac4 ,more than a century previous to that time the ,scriptures had named ,cyrus as the shepherd1 ,isaiah ,,xlv4 #a1 #c4 and when ,cyrus placed his uncle temporarily on the throne of ,babylon1 a heavenly messenger was sent to ,darius who stood to confirm and strengthen him4 ,daniel ,,xi4 #a4 ,this gave the ,jews a friend at court who paved the way for that celebrated emancipation proclamation which ,cyrus issued on his return to ,babylon4 ,naturally such a document belonged among the state papers and should have been found in the house of the rolls where the treasures were laid up in ,babylon1 but diligent search proved of no avail4 ,ezra ,,vi4 #a4 ,however1 as the document was dated in the time of ,darius the ,mede1 official attention was next directed to the palace that is in the province of the ,medes1 where a careful search proved successful4 ,ezra ,,vi4 #b4 ,there they found the original roll stowed away among the royal documents and forwarded it to ,king ,darius ,hystaspes4 ,the king promptly ratified the decree of ,cyrus and added1 ,let it be done with speed4 ,the history of ,darius the ,mede is therefore one of peculiar interest in the life of the ,jewish people4 ,,note ,b4 ,,the ,,sum ,,of ,,the ,,matters4 ,,daniel ,,vii4 #a ,,and #be4 ,the vision of the four great beasts is now complete and we have reached the sum of the matters in verse #be4 ,already in chapter ,,ii4 the same subject was summarized by the following language3 ,in the days of these kings shall the ,god of heaven set up a kingdom1 which shall never be destroyed 444 and it shall stand forever4 ,the present summary differs from the first in that it localizes the endless kingdom1 and tells the year when it would be set up4 ,whenever we send a telegram and wish to conceal our meaning from the public we employ single words to express conditions and quantities4 ,twice1 ,daniel was told by his heavenly visitor3--shut thou up the vision1 it is therefore proper to infer that the word ,,time was used to express a certain number of years and ,,times to express a greater number of years4 ,but what heavenly measure of time do we find in the ,bible1 associated with the punishment of nations1 that can be taken as the unit period for measuring seasons of ,god's displeasure8 ,turn to ,zech4 ,i4 #abth and we read3--,then the angel of the ,lord answered and said1 ,o ,lord of hosts1 how long wilt thou not have mercy on ,jerusalem and on the cities of ,judah against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years4 ,for other examples1 see ,,note ,d4 ,if then the word ,,time was inserted in the heavenly message as a symbol for #gj years1 and the numeral #g conveyed to the ,jewish mind the idea of a perfect quantity1 then a week of ,,time1 or #g times #gj might very naturally be symbolized by the word ,,times4 ,we find in ,gen4 ,,ii4 #d4 that the #g ,,days of creation are spoken of in the singular as1 the ,,day the ,lord ,god made the earth and the heavens4 ,besides every #gth year was a ,sabbatic year4 ,so that whatever the word ,,time means in the singular1 we may reasonably take the word ,,times to mean a #g fold quantity in the plural4 ,we find another measure in ,matt4 ,,xviii4 #bb4 where the ,divine idea of forgiveness is expressed in numerals4 ,the apostle ,peter thought that he did well in fixing the unit of forgiveness at #g fold1 but he was told to multiply his scant number by #gj before he could attain to the ,divine standard4 ,if now we substitute these values for their symbols in the formula3 ,time1 ,times and ,half-time we shall obtain1 #gj plus #dij1 plus #ce1 equals to #eie years4 ,verse four supplies the initial date for this series of years4 ,from it we learn that the sum of the matters started with the ,medo-,persian kingdom of ,cyrus1 who united in his own person the blood of both royal houses and became king in ,b4,c4 #eeh4 ,from this date to the ,christian era was #eeg years and from the era to ,a4,d4 #ci was #ch years more1 making a total of #eeg plus #ch1 or #eie years4 ,from which we learn that the sum of the matters or the full time arrived for the setting up of the kingdom in ,a4,d4 #ci4 ,the prophecy therefore gives us the year1 and we shall find that the #abth verse of the #abth chapter supplies the day when all these things were finished4 ,the apostle ,peter in describing the events of that day said3--,forasmuch then as ,god gave them 7the ,gentiles7 the like gift as he did unto us1 who believed on the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 what was ,i1 that ,i could withstand ,god8 ,when they heard these things they held their peace1 and glorified ,god1 saying1 ,then hath ,god also on the ,gentiles granted repentance unto life4 ,acts ,,xi4 #ag1 #ah4 ,the admission of the ,gentiles was deemed a matter of so great importance that the formula has been repeated in the #gth verse of the #abth chapter1 also material has been given in the #abth verse of the same chapter by which the very day itself can be computed4 ,the passages stand to each other in the relation of demonstration to proof4 ,,note ,c4 ,,days4 ,in searching for symbolic numbers we found that number #di stood both for the ,jubilee year and for the ,feast of ,weeks3--,concerning the ,jubilee it was said3--,and thou shalt number #g sabbaths of years unto thee1 #g times #g years3 and the space of #g sabbaths of years shall be unto thee #di years4 ,leviticus ,,xxv4 #h4--;,concerning ,pentecost it was said3 ,and thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the ,lord thy ,god--,seven weeks shalt thou number unto thee3 begin to number the #g weeks from such time as thou beginnest to put the sickle to the corn4 ,deu4 ,,xvi4 #i1 #aj4 ,the feast was to be kept in a fourfold manner with the offering of a tribute1 with rejoicing1 with remembrance1 and with obedience4 ,for more than #cfjj years has this beautiful custom been observed among the ,jews1 so that #di1 the number of days1 comes to us with special emphasis4 ,with such a prominent place assigned to it in the ,jewish ritual1 no wonder if it found a place in the symbolic language of the heavenly visitor4 ,we have discovered that such was the case and accordingly have made calculations for the three periods represented by #bcjj days1 #abij days and #de days 7#acce less #abij7 on the basis that each prophetic day equals #di ordinary days of #bd hours each4 ,they stand for #aab1gjj ordinary days2 #fc1baj days and #bbje days4 ,in reducing these days to years the sidereal year was taken as the ,standard year4 ,a sidereal year1 or time in which the earth makes one revolution1 the point of reference being a fixed star1 amounts to #cfe days #f hours #i minutes #i-f_/aj seconds1 expressed decimally it equals #cfe4befcfaa days4 ,by dividing each period of ordinary days by the number of days in a sidereal year we obtain the actual length of each prophetic period4 ,in arranging these periods1 the starting point was ,may #dth ,b4,c4 #ada1 or day on which the ,temple precincts were cleansed by ,simon ,maccabeus4 ,the #abij days carries us directly to ,may #bdth ,a4,d4 #cc1 which was the day of ,pentecost that great and notable day of the ,lord when the ,holy ,spirit descended upon the disciples at ,jerusalem4 ,it is interesting to note in this case how very precise is the language of ,scripture4 ,the passage reads3--,when the day of ,pentecost was ,,fully come4 ,after their return from ,babylon the ,jews were accustomed to devote two days1 instead of one1 to the observance of the feast1 and as ,pentecost that year fell on ,may #bcrd and #bdth1 the day of ,pentecost was ,,fully come on the day indicated by our chart4 ,the event therefore happened precisely as foretold by the heavenly visitor1 who said to ,daniel1 the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is ,,true1 and it came about with that degree of exactness with which astronomers become familiar in their study of the heavenly bodies4 ,the chart clearly proves that the #abij days is a perfect fit between two well-known dates4 ,the other periods give us two extremely important dates heretofore absolutely unknown to ,bible students4 ,,the ,,only ,,key ,,to neither the marching of armies1 nor even the rumor of war4 ,true1 these all came in the ,fall of ,a4,d4 #dj1 when ,petronius was sent to ,syria with instructions to place the images of the ,romans in the ,temple at ,jerusalem4 ,it may be said in passing1 that the expedition landed in ,ptolemais and there wintered4 ,but in the ,spring of ,a4,d4 #da the attitude of the ,jews was so determined1 that ,petronius sent to ,rome for additional instructions4 ,the ,emperor1 however1 died quite suddenly1 and the expedition was finally abandoned4 ,the year ,a4,d4 #ci was a time of peace and good order2 a time most favorable to the all-important mission of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,,note ,d4 ,,two ,,thousand ,,and ,,three ,,hundred ,,days4 ,,dan4 ,,viii4 #ad4 ,in the vision of the evening and the morning it is evident that #bcjj days must end with a complete cleansing of the sanctuary1 and unquestionably this was accomplished by ,simon ,maccabeus on ,may the #dth ,b4,c4 #ada4 ,i ,mac4 ,,xiii4 #ea2 but at what time they should begin to count is not so evident4 ,the #aith verse tells us3 ,i will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation4 ,we ask3 what indignation8 ,when was the first end8 ,when the middle8 and ,when the last end8 ,we note first1 that the speaker was the angel ,gabriel1 consequently the indignation referred to was of ,divine origin4 ,the word indignation stands for sore displeasure ,zech4 ,i4 #b4 ,it arose in the year ,b4,c4 #eij1 the seventh of the captivity1 at which time ,israel was cast off and ,nebuchadnezzar prepared to wage war against them4 ,it was announced in the following words3--,as ,i live saith the ,lord ,god1 ,i will not be inquired of by you ,ezek4 ,,xx4 #c4 ,the indignation lasted just #gj years ,zech4 ,i4 #ab and ended by a promise of pardon made in the eighth month1 which according to the calendar of ,rabbi ,hillel ,,ii4 7,,idan ,,olamim of ,j4 ,l4 ,sossnitz7 began ,october #beth ,b4,c4 #ebj ,zech4 ,i4 #a and #c4 ,we note in passing that although ,cyrus put an end to the ,babylonian captivity in ,b4,c4 #ecf and the people returned to the land of ,judea1 yet they encountered insuperable obstacles which held up their work ,ezra ,v4 #c until the year ,b4,c4 #ebj1 which was the end of #gj years' indignation4 ,from these passages we learn what were the limitations in one case of sore displeasure4 ,but ,isaiah prophesied that ,jerusalem would receive of the ,lord's hand double for all her sins ,isa4 ,,xl4 #b4 ,jeremiah also spoke in the same vein ,and first ,i will recompense their iniquity and their sin double ,jer4 ,,xvi4 #ah4 ,when we reach ,b4,c4 #dcc we find that ,nehemiah dreaded a still further return of ,god's sore displeasure and warned the nobles of ,judah against profaning the ,sabbath day4 ,neh4 ,,xiii4 #af1 #ah4 ,as the first indignation ended with the #hth month of ,b4,c4 #ebj1 a double period ought to end with the #hth month of ,b4,c4 #dej1 that is1 with ,october #bnd of that year4 ,but you object1 how could a period be truly #gj years in length1 when it began with ,october #beth and ended with ,october the #bnd8 ,this question admits of easy explanation4 ,according to the ,jewish calendar the eighth month comes and goes with the phases of the moon1 just like our ,easter occurs at different seasons1 hence we must take the average of these dates1 viz3 ,october the #adth as our representative day4 ,we have already alluded to the delays experienced by the ,jews when freed by ,cyrus and desire at this point to draw attention to the fact that ,zerubbabel's temple was not completed until ,b4,c4 #eae1 ,,just #e ,,years after the indignation period expired1 in ,b4,c4 #ebj2 and that in like manner ,nehemiah's temple was not completed until ,b4,c4 #dde1 ,,just #e ,,years after the next indignation period expired1 in ,b4,c4 #dej4 ,we might also add that from the time when the ,jews first worshipped in ,babylon as captives in ,b4,c4 #ehe1 to the time when they worshipped in ,zerubbabel's temple as free men in ,b4,c4 #eae was another instance of a period #gj years long4 ,this frequent recurrence of #gj-year periods shows that as a numeral #gj may justly be regarded as one of the units of ,,time in the dispensation of ,god's providence1 and therefore to be reckoned with in the study of prophecy4 ,but returning to our representative day1 ,october #adth ,b4,c4 #dej1 we realize that when the first and the second indignation had passed1 the time came for the last end of the indignation spoken of in the #aith verse1 and known as the #bcjj days4 ,by the calculations given in ,,note ,c1 we find that #bcjj prophetic days exactly fill the interval between ,oct4 #adth ,b4,c4 #dej and ,may the #dth ,b4,c4 #ada4 ,having thus brought out the limitations of the #bcjj days we would add1 that ,daniel's eleventh chapter gives in outline a complete history of the period under consideration1 so that the ,jews had it in their power to tell the prophetic time of day at any moment between ,b4,c4 #dej and ,b4,c4 #ada4 ,,days4 ,,graphic ,,exhibit4 ,end of the ,october #ad1 ,b4,c4 #dej4 ---------------------------------------- ------------------ ,,double ,,from ,,persia4 ,,daniel ,,ix4 #be4 ,ezra gives a full account of this great event in his history of the ,jews1 in the ,v,i,i,ith and ,v,i,ith chapters of his book1 where he says1 they began to go from ,babylon on the #ast day of the #ast month in the #gth year of king ,artaxerxes1 also that they were not fairly under way until the #abth day of the #ast month1 which was within two days of the ,passover4 ,after a journey of #d months they arrived at the city of ,jerusalem4 ,in fixing the date of the ,exodus from ,persia we must determine the boundaries of the #gth year of ,artaxerxes4 ,first1 as to the year itself1 it has been well established that his reign began in ,b4,c4 #dfe4 ,then as to the month1 the statement found in ,neh4 ,i4 #a4 and ,,ii4 #a4 render a commencement impossible between the months of ,november and ,march1 while the statement made in ,ezra ,,vii4 #g1 #h and #i preclude the interval from ,march to ,august following4 ,this narrows the field for the commencement of ,artaxerxes' reign down to the months of ,august1 ,september and ,october4 ,although there is no possible way of distinguishing between the relative claims of these three months1 yet from the wording of ,nehemiah ,i4 #a4 we shall decide in favor of the last1 viz3 the month of ,october4 ,it follows that3-- #ast year of ,artaxerxes began ,oct4 ,b4,c4 #dfe1 ended ,oct4 ,b4,c4 #dfd #bnd #dfd #dfc #crd #dfc #dfb #dth #dfb #dfa #eth #dfa #dfj #fth #dfj #dei #gth year of ,artaxerxes began ,oct4 ,b4,c4 #dei1 ended ,oct4 ,b4,c4 #deh and so on3 #bjth year of ,artaxerxes began ,oct4 ,rabbi ,hillel ,,ii4 ,,idan ,,olamim of ,j4 ,l4 ,sossnitz1 we derive the following dates for the ,,exodus ,,from ,,persia3 ,jews began to leave ,babylon ,march #beth ,b4,c4 #deh left the river of ,ahava ,april #eth #deh arrived at ,jerusalem ,july #bast #deh ,in conclusion we observe1 that the real start of the ,jews under the commandment1 viz3 their going forth took place3 ,april #eth ,b4,c4 #deh1 and as ,christ rose from the dead on ,april #eth ,a4,d4 #cc1 the interval between dates amounted to #dij years1 or ,,seventy ,,weeks1 exactly as foretold by the angel ,gabriel in ,daniel ,,ix4 #bd4 ,,note ,f4 ,,date ,,of ,,the ,,crucifixion4 ,,dan4 ,,ix4 #bf4 ,since the prophecy of ,daniel points directly to the time when ,messiah would be cut off and not to the date of ,christ's birth1 it is evident that neither the natal day nor the length of his life on earth are necessary to a complete understanding of the prophecy4 ,what we need most to know are the day and the year in which ,messiah was crucified4 ,happily these points can be determined by data found in the ,bible4 ,turn to ,luke ,,iii4 #a and #bc and we learn that ,jesus began to be about #cj years of age in the #aeth year of ,tiberius ,caesar4 ,not that ,jesus attained the age of #cj in the #aeth year of ,tiberius1 but that when the last day of the #aeth year arrived1 viz3 ,aug4 #ahth ,a4,d4 #bi1 ,jesus was ,,very ,,near #cj years old4 ,his birthday anniversary therefore comes in the ,fall of the year4 ,from that time on1 we count #c years to his crucifixion in ,a4,d4 #cc4 ,we learn from the parable of the barren fig tree1 also from ,daniel's prophecy that ,messiah's ministry would last one-half a prophetic week1 or #c years4 ,the parable itself accounts for #c years3 ,behold these three years ,i come seeking fruit and find none2 and since the parable was given1 about the time of the harvest home1 or feast of tabernacles1 another half year was necessary to carry the time over from the feast of tabernacles to the following ,passover4 ,when this was completed his ministry ended4 ,at the very outset of our ,lord's ministry he spoke of the work before him and proclaimed ,god's good pleasure in sending him1 to preach the gospel to the poor1 to heal the broken hearted1 to preach deliverance to the captives1 the recovery of sight to the blind1 and to set at liberty them that are bruised4 ,luke ,,iv4 #ah4 ,with this ministry expressive of ,god's favor1 ,he then contrasted the ministry of ,elias1 expressive of ,god's displeasure when the heaven was shut up #c ,,years ,,and ,,six ,,months1 when great famine was throughout the land4 ,this reference seems to have been a sign as to the exact length of time ,christ's ministry would continue on earth1 precisely as the experience of ,jonah in the fish was a sign of the length of time ,christ would remain in the heart of the earth4 ,matthew ,,xii4 #dj4 ,but the strongest evidence is furnished by the #d ,passovers which were celebrated during the period of said ministry4 ,the years therefore ran as follows3-- ,christ began his ministry when #cj years old ,fall ,a4,d4 #bi #ast ,passover ,john ,,ii4 #ac ,spring #cj #bnd ,v4 #a #ca #crd ,,vi4 #d #cb #dth ,,xi4 #ee #cc ,as regards the exact date of the fourth ,passover we know by astronomy that there was a full moon at #d4ae ,p4,m4 on ,friday ,april #c ,a4,d4 #cc4 ,on that day therefore ,messiah was cut off4 ,at this point let us glance backward #dij years1 or #gj weeks to the ,passover of ,b4,c4 #deh1 and we shall meet the children of ,israel making their ,exodus from ,persia ,ezra ,,viii4 #ca going forth under the leadership of ,ezra1 by commandment of ,artaxerxes ordering them to restore and to build ,jerusalem4 ,in view of this marvellous fulfilment of prophecy1 how frivolous do seem the charges of those who claim that the ,book of ,daniel is--a bundle of loose leaves--a consolatory political pamphlet--and written as historic fiction in #afh-afe ,b4,c4 ,pretty good fiction1 is it not8 for one writing in ,b4,c4 #afh to make declaration that a certain event1 figured from a given starting point1 would positively take place at the end of #dij years6 ,we have many writers of historic fiction in our own day1 but none so venturesome as the chief of the governors over all the wise men of ,babylon4 ,those who call the predictions found in the ,book of ,daniel--historic fiction--simply destroy the meaning of words and pour contempt upon the ,word of ,god4 ,our explanation robs the ,i,xth chapter of ,daniel of all its mystery and shows why the ,,lord called him ,daniel the ,,prophet4 ,,chronology4 ,,the ,,birth ,,of ,,christ4 ,christ was born in the year ,b4,c4 #b4 ,in support of this announcement we do not propose to give a table of dates1 setting forth the ideas of the ,christian ,fathers who wrote prior to the #eth century4 ,nor those of ,dionysius ,exiguus1 of the ,venerable ,bede1 or of ,roger ,bacon1 all of whom wrote between the #eth and the #adth centuries4 ,neither shall we give those of ,archbishops ,usher and ,lloyd in the #agth century1 nor those of ,dr4 ,hales and of ,sir ,isaac ,newton in the #ahth century1 nor those of ,prideaux and of the talented chronologist ,h4 ,fynes ,clinton in the #aith century4 ,we find our authority in ,eusebius the father of ecclesiastical history ,a4,d4 #cbe and give with it a #bjth century ,chart in proof of the accuracy of his statement4 ,of course back of ,eusebius lay ,jewish tradition1 which in modern times has found expression in the ,jewish ,calendar of ,e4 ,h4 ,lindo2 ,london1 #ahch4 ,under the title of the ,book of the ,generations1 that noted chronologist states that the ,christian ,era began with the year ,a4,m4 #cgfj1 in other words with the #cjth day of ,caesarea1 spent most of his life in ,judea1 possessed rare opportunities for verifying ,jewish tradition4 ,it is very significant that his scholarly research led him to accept and endorse a date for the commencement of the ,christian ,era1 which is identically the same as that preserved by the ,jews4 ,the ,new ,testament plainly declares that ,christ was born shortly prior to the death of ,herod the ,great4 ,the most perfect history we possess of ,herod's life is found in the works of ,flavius ,josephus1 who acknowledged indebtedness to the ,commentaries of ,king ,herod1 and to the works of ,nicolaus of ,damascus1 the historiographer of ,herod4 ,it should be remembered that for his facts ,josephus depended entirely on others1 because ,herod died almost #dj years before ,josephus was born and therefore1 however accurate ,josephus might be individually1 he was liable to be mistaken by the error of others4 ,let us turn to the ,x,i,vth book of his ,antiquities1 because it contains a statement of than ordinary precision which bears directly on the date of ,herod's death and may rightly be regarded as the corner stone of ,josephus' calculations regarding ,herod's reign4 ,it is there recorded that ,hyrcanus began to rule in the #c;d year of the #aggth olympiad ,b4,c4 #gj_/fi4 ,at first sight1 one cannot help being pleased1 that in so important a matter1 ,josephus took special pains to be exact1 for nowhere else in all his writings does he give the year of any olympiad4 ,it was his custom simply to announce the olympiad and leave the reader to guess in which one of four years the event took place4 ,however1 in this one instance he gave the year and left nothing to be supplied4 ,this apparent accuracy has led many readers astray1 for they have lost sight of the fact that his statement is not historically correct4 ,it is a well-established fact that ,pompey took ,jerusalem on the #bdth day of ,may1 ,b4,c4 #fc1 that he deposed ,aristobulus and made ,hyrcanus monarch4 ,according to this1 the brothers reigned about #f years4 ,josephus1 however1 states that one reigned #c years and #f months ,,xiv4 #f4 #a1 and the other reigned only #c months ,,xv4 #f4 #d1 making a total of #c years instead of #f years4 ,here1 then1 we have discovered a huge gap of about #c years in the reckoning of ,josephus4 ,we believe this is the first time that public attention has been directed to this grave error3 we say grave1 because it has led the ,christian world astray and fostered the belief that ,christ was born in ,b4,c4 #e instead of the year ,b4,c4 #b4 ,happily1 ,eusebius escaped this pitfall4 ,it is evident from the chart1 that in the case of #f reigns ,josephus ,,stretched ,,his ,,figures and made them occupy #ajc years instead of #ajj years4 ,this proves that his figures1 in part1 were matters of calculation and not rigid statements of historical facts4 ,no notice can be taken of the joint-rule exercised by ,augustus and ,tiberius between ,a4,d4 #aa and #ad1 because that mode of reckoning is unnatural4 ,the day of one's death is the natural dividing line between reigns1 and as ,augustus ,caesar died on the #aith day of ,august1 ,a4,d4 #ad ,tiberius ,caesar began to reign on the same day4 ,besides1 to admit a joint-rule would hopelessly add another #c years to ,josephus' error and put him in the light of having carried his process for ,,stretching ,,figures #f points instead of #c points4 ,what he did do in that line is bad enough1 without making matters worse4 ,it will be observed that the work of contracting ,josephus' figures has been accomplished in part on the second line1 but the final rectification appears on the last line4 ,these results maintain the integrity of all that ,josephus said about the following olympiads1 viz3 the #agith1 #ahdth1 #aheth1 #ahgth1 and #aibnd4--,they also accord with the discovery of ,zumpt regarding a double term in the governorship of ,cyrenius4 ,we reach a solid ground on the #aeth year of ,tiberius ,caesar and arrive at last at the first ,easter ,sunday1 viz3 ,april #e1 ,a4,d4 #cc1 the end of the ,,seventy ,,weeks of the ,prophet ,daniel4 ,in conclusion we observe1 that the
