of the chief incidents in ,our ,lord's ,life1 the writer has endeavoured to keep as close as possible to the sacred text2 its divine simplicity being far preferable to any other style of writing the story4 ,the easiest words and those most familiar to children have generally been used and every effort has been made to adapt the volume to the intelligence of the young with the view of instilling into their minds the love of our ,saviour for mankind as shown in the beautiful story of ,his life4 ,illustration ,illustration ,illustration ,,the ,,life ,,of ,,our ,,lord ,,for ,,little ,,children ,illustration3 ,,king ,,david4 ,,in ages past ,god made the world3 the earth1 the sea1 the hills1 the streams1 the trees2 the fish1 birds and beasts2 last of all ,he made ,adam1 the first man1 and ,eve his wife1 and they lived in the ,garden of ,eden4 ,they were quite good at first1 but tempted by ,satan they ate the fruit of a tree ,god told them not to eat1 and that brought sin into the world2 they could not live for ever now1 they must die2 but that their souls might go to heaven1 ,god's own ,son said ,he would come down on earth and die to save them4 ,god said ,his ,son should be born of ,abraham's nation1 and should be one of the sons of the line of ,king ,david1 who sang the sweet psalms in praise of ,god4 ,abraham was a good man1 so good that ,god called him ,his friend2 and from him came the people called ,jews4 ,david was one of their kings4 ,god always keeps ,his word1 but ,he makes men wait till it is ,his time to do as ,he says2 and it was a long1 long time after ,abraham and ,david that our ,lord came to live among men4 ,at last ,god sent ,his angel ,gabriel to a young maiden1 named ,mary1 who lived at a town called ,nazareth1 to tell her that ,god loved her1 and that she should have ,god's ,son for her own son4 ,our ,lord would be her little babe4 ,when ,mary saw the angel she was at first afraid1 but he said to her1 ,fear not1 ,mary1 and he told her that she must call the child's name ,jesus--that means ,saviour--for ,he would save the people from their sins4 ,then ,mary must have been glad4 ,she said1 ,i am ,god's servant2 may ,his will be done4 ,mary was to be the wife of her cousin ,joseph--they were both of ,david's family--so the angel went and told him too1 that ,mary should have ,god's ,son for her own1 and that he must call the child ,jesus4 ,joseph and ,mary lived at ,nazareth4 ,at that time the ,jews were ruled over by the ,romans1 whose king was called ,csar4 ,he wanted to know how many people there were in that land1 so he said all the men and women of it must go to their own towns to be counted4 ,now ,mary and ,joseph's town was ,bethlehem4 ,it was a great way off1 but they had to go4 ,it took days and days to get there1 for they went slowly1 and when at last they came to the town they found the inn full2 there was no room for them1 and they had to go to a stable to sleep and eat and drink4 ,and that night ,god sent ,mary her ,son4 ,she had no nice cradle to lay the ,lord in1 but she had some clothes to put on ,him1 so she wrapped the sweet babe in them1 and laid ,him in a manger1 where the ox and the ass fed4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,journey ,,down ,,to ,,bethlehem4 ,how good it was of our ,lord to be born a poor child for our sakes1 was it not8 ,he was the ,son of ,god1 but to save men ,he came down and was a babe in a stable of ,bethlehem4 ,winter had come1 the snow was on the hills near ,bethlehem1 and some shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks at night for fear the wolves or bears should come and hurt them1 when suddenly they saw a great light in the dark sky1 and from it a bright angel came down close to them1 and they were much afraid4 ,but the angel said1 ,fear not1 for ,i bring you good tidings--that is1 news--of great joy which shall be to all people4 ,for unto you is born this day1 in the city of ,david1 a ,saviour1 which is ,christ the ,lord4 ,and this is how you will know ,him3 you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger4 ,and then a great many angels came out of the light and sang1 ,glory to ,god in the highest1 and on earth peace2 good-will to men4 ,the song ended1 they went back to heaven1 and the shepherds said1 ,let us go to ,bethlehem1 and see this great thing of which the ,lord has told us4 ,and they made haste1 and found ,mary and ,joseph1 and the babe lying in a manger4 ,and the shepherds praised ,god1 and told the people all that they had seen and heard4 ,the ,son of ,god had no nice soft cradle as you had2 ,he was laid in a manger from which the ox and ass fed3 ,he chose to be a poor child for our sakes4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,shepherds ,,in ,,the ,,stable4 ,mary gave the name of ,jesus to the babe as ,god had told her1 and when ,he was six weeks old she and ,joseph brought ,him to ,god's ,temple to present ,him to the ,lord1 and to give two doves to show her thanks for the child ,god had sent to her4 ,there was an old and good man at that time1 to whom ,god had promised that he should not die till he had seen the ,lord's ,son2 and now ,god's ,holy ,spirit told him that the ,child was in the ,temple2 and the old man1 ,simeon1 went there and took the ,babe in his arms1 and thanked ,god1 and said that now he should die in peace1 for he had seen the ,saviour4 ,and ,simeon blessed ,joseph and ,mary1 but he told her that men would speak ill of her ,child4 ,then a good old woman--her name was ,anna--came in2 she was day and night praying in the ,temple1 and ,god let her1 too1 know that this ,child was ,god's ,son1 come to save men2 and she was glad1 and gave ,god thanks1 and told every one that the ,christ was come4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,presentation ,,of ,,our ,,lord ,,in ,,the ,,temple4 ,the word ,christ means anointed--that is1 touched with oil1 as kings and priests were--and the ,jews always spoke of the ,saviour who was to come as the ,christ1 or ,king4 ,then ,mary took the ,child back to ,bethlehem4 ,now there were some ,wise ,men who lived a long way off1 and who knew a great deal about the stars4 ,at that time all the world expected that ,christ would come1 and these wise men had heard that when ,he was born they would see a new star4 ,one night they saw a bright one that they did not know1 and it shone over the land of the ,jews4 ,so they set off at once to go and see the new-born ,king4 ,it was a long way to go2 they rode across the sands on camels1 and went on and on to where the star shone4 ,at last they came to ,jerusalem1 and they asked the people1 ,where is ,he that is born ,king of the ,jews8 for we have seen ,his star in the east1 and are come to worship him4 ,illustration3 ,,arrival ,,of ,,the ,,wise ,,men4 ,now at that time the ,romans had made a very bad1 cruel man1 whose name was ,herod1 ,king of the ,jews4 ,when he heard of the wise men and of what they wanted to know1 he was troubled2 for he was afraid if the great ,king was born that he 7,herod7 would not be ,king any longer4 ,so he sent for the chief priests and asked them where ,god had said that the ,christ should be born4 ,he did not know himself1 for he was not a ,jew4 ,and the priests said that ,christ should be born in the little town of ,bethlehem4 ,then ,herod sent for the wise men and asked them when they first saw the star2 and he sent them to ,bethlehem and said3 ,when you have found the young ,child bring me word1 that ,i may come and worship ,him too4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,flight ,,into ,,egypt4 ,but the cruel ,king meant to kill the ,babe if he found him4 ,then the wise men went to ,bethlehem1 and to their great joy1 the star that they saw in the east went before them till it came and stood over where the young ,child was4 ,then the wise men went in1 and saw the young ,child and ,mary his mother1 and they fell down and worshipped ,him1 and gave ,him rich gifts--gold and a sweet scent1 and myrrh1 which is a kind of gum4 ,but ,god told them1 in a dream1 not to return to ,herod1 so they went back to their own land by another way4 ,and when they were gone1 the angel of the ,lord came to ,joseph in a dream1 and told him to rise1 and take the young ,child and ,his mother and flee into ,egypt1 for ,herod would seek for the ,babe to kill ,him4 ,joseph rose at once1 though it was night1 and took the ,child and ,his mother and made haste to go to ,egypt4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,sea ,,of ,,galilee4 ,king ,herod was very angry when he knew that the wise men were gone home1 and he sent and had all the babes in ,bethlehem killed1 from quite babies up to two years old4 ,he thought1 thus1 that he would be sure to kill the ,holy ,child1 but ,god did not let him1 you know4 ,when this cruel ,king died1 an angel came and told ,joseph to take the ,child back again into ,his own land4 ,and ,joseph took ,him and ,mary1 and they went to live at ,nazareth1 a town on the shore of the ,sea of ,galilee4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,in ,,the ,,temple4 ,and the ,child grew strong and full of wisdom1 and the grace of ,god was on him4 ,and when ,he was twelve years old1 ,he went up with ,mary and ,joseph to ,jerusalem1 to keep the ,passover--this was a feast that ,god had commanded the ,jews to keep1 to remind them that ,he had saved them from death1 and set them free when they were slaves in ,egypt4 ,they ate a lamb at it1 and drank some wine4 ,when the feast was over1 ,mary and ,joseph went on their way home1 but ,jesus stayed behind in the city4 ,there were so many people going to ,galilee that ,mary did not miss her son till night2 then she went to look for ,him1 for she thought ,he must be with some friends2 but she could not find ,him1 and in great fear1 she and ,joseph went back to the city to seek for ,him4 ,they did not find ,him for three days1 and then they went to the ,temple1 and there ,he was in the midst of the priests and learned men1 listening to them1 and asking them questions4 ,and they were all much surprised at his great sense and wise answers4 ,his mother1 also1 was amazed2 but she said to ,him1 ,son1 why have you done this8 your father and ,i have sought ,you sorrowing4 ,and ,he said to them1 ,how is it that you sought me8 ,did you not know that ,i must do ,my ,father's business8 ,he meant ,god's business1 but they did not know the meaning of ,his words4 ,then ,he went home with them and obeyed them1 and was a good1 kind ,son2 but ,his mother kept all these things in her heart4 ,jesus has shown all children how to behave to their parents2 to obey them and be kind to them as ,he was4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,river ,,jordan4 ,now about fifteen years after this time there came a man in the wild part of the land1 by the river ,jordan1 who cried to the people1 ,repent1 that is1 ,be sorry for your sins and be good1 for the ,kingdom of ,heaven is near4 ,this man's name was ,john1 and he was the cousin of ,jesus4 ,he wore only a rough robe of camel's hair and a belt of leather round his waist2 he had never tasted wine2 he fed on insects called locusts1 and wild honey4 ,then all the people of ,jerusalem1 and in all the places near1 came to ,john1 and said how sorry they were for their sins1 and he baptized them in the ,jordan--that is1 he poured water on their heads as they stood in the stream as a sign that ,god would wash their sins away--that is1 forgive them4 ,but he told them all that he was not the ,christ who was to come4 ,he said he was only a ,voice to call them from their bad ways and make them ready for the ,one that was to come1 whose shoes he was not good enough to untie4 ,at last1 one day1 ,jesus came to be baptized1 but ,john1 who knew how good ,he was1 said1 ,no1 ,i need to be baptized by ,you4 ,why do ,you come to me8 ,but ,jesus said1 ,it was right to do so1 and then ,john obeyed ,him and baptized ,him4 ,our ,lord had no sins to be forgiven1 but ,he wished to set us an example1 always to do right4 ,and as ,he came up out of the river1 the heavens opened1 and the ,spirit of ,god1 like a dove1 came down and rested on ,him1 and there came a voice from heaven1 saying1 ,this is my beloved ,son in ,whom ,i am well pleased4 ,then ,john knew that ,jesus was ,god's ,son--the ,christ4 ,after ,he had been baptized1 ,our ,lord went into the wild country1 or wilderness1 for forty days1 and was tempted by the wicked spirit1 called the ,devil4 ,to tempt any one is to try and make him wicked2 but the devil could not make our ,lord say or do a wrong thing1 although he tried in every way that he possibly could1 and so he left ,him4 ,but ,jesus came back to ,john the ,baptist1 and as ,he came near the river1 ,john said to those who stood by him1 ,behold the ,lamb of ,god that taketh away the sin of the world4 ,and he told them how he knew that ,jesus was the ,son of ,god1 by the voice from heaven and the dove coming down on ,him4 ,again1 the next day as ,john stood with two of his disciples--that means1 men who were taught by him--,jesus came near1 and ,john said1 ,behold the ,lamb of ,god4 ,and then the two disciples of ,john followed ,jesus4 ,he turned and saw them1 and said1 ,what seek ye8 ,they said1 ,master1 where do ,you live8 ,and ,he said1 ,come and see1 and ,he took them to ,his house1 and they stayed with ,him all day4 ,now one of them was called ,andrew4 ,he was so sure that ,our ,lord was ,christ1 the ,son of ,god1 that he went and found his own brother1 ,simon1 and brought him to hear and know this great teacher4 ,a good brother or sister will always try to make his or her own brother know and love ,our ,lord4 ,illustration3 ,,philip ,,and ,,nathanael4 ,the next day ,our ,lord told ,philip to follow ,him4 ,and ,philip went to his friend ,nathanael1 and said to him1 ,we have found the ,lord who is ,christ1 ,he is ,jesus of ,nazareth4 ,nathanael said1 ,can any good thing come out of ,nazareth8 for ,nazareth was a very bad town4 ,philip said1 ,come and see4 ,he knew that if his friend saw and heard ,jesus he would love ,him4 ,so he brought ,nathanael to ,our ,lord1 and ,jesus said1 ,here is a very good1 true man4 ,nathanael said1 ,how do ,you know me8 ,jesus said1 ,before ,philip called you ,i saw you when you were under the fig-tree4 ,god can see us always4 ,so then ,nathanael knew that ,jesus must be the ,son of ,god--the ,king--for only the ,son of ,god could have seen him so far off2 and he stayed with ,our ,lord as the others did4 ,now ,jesus had five disciples with ,him1 and ,he left the shores of the ,jordan and went with his friends1 ,john1 ,andrew1 ,peter1 ,philip1 and ,nathanael1 to a town called ,cana4 ,and three days after they came to it1 there was to be a wedding in ,cana4 ,the mother of ,jesus was there1 and ,our ,lord and ,his disciples were invited to the marriage4 ,now1 you know the ,lord ,jesus and ,his mother were poor1 and no doubt the people who gave the feast were also poor1 for they had not enough wine to last till the end2 and when there was not any more the mother of ,jesus went to ,him and said1 ,they have no wine4 ,jesus did not say at once1 ,i will give them some2 ,he said1 ,what have ,i to do with thee8 ,my time has not yet come4 ,but ,his mother believed that ,he would help all the same2 she knew how good and kind ,he was4 ,so she said to the servants1 ,do what ,he tells you4 ,now there were some large stone jars or pots in the room used for holding water1 and ,jesus said to the servants1 ,fill the water-pots with water4 ,and they filled them up to the brim4 ,and then ,our ,lord told them to pour it out and take it to the man who was ruler of the feast2 for the ,jews used to get a friend to see that things went right at their feasts1 and he was called the governor or ruler4 ,illustration3 ,,changing ,,the ,,water ,,into ,,wine4 ,now ,our ,lord had changed the water into wine1 and when the ruler of the feast had tasted it he sent for the bridegroom1 and said to him1 ,you have kept the good wine till now1 for it was very good wine4 ,but the servants knew that it had been water1 and they told every one that ,jesus had made it wine4 ,this was the first miracle--that is1 wonderful thing--that ,our ,lord did before all the people4 ,it was a great miracle2 and when ,his disciples saw it they were sure that ,he must be the ,christ4 ,why did our ,lord do this wonderful thing8 ,to be kind1 and to show men that ,he was ,god4 ,there are things men cannot do2 but ,god can do them1 and when ,jesus did them ,he showed men that ,he was ,god4 ,soon after this1 ,our ,lord went up to ,jerusalem to keep the ,passover4 ,he went to the ,temple--,god's house in which ,he was worshipped2 and where every day they killed a lamb and burnt it on the altar4 ,the lamb was offered up that ,god might forgive the sins of the people4 ,so when ,john the ,baptist said1 ,here is the ,lamb of ,god1 he meant that ,our ,lord would die1 as the ,temple ,lamb did1 to save men from their sins4 ,illustration3 ,,turning ,,out ,,the ,,money ,,changers4 ,but when our ,lord came into the ,temple ,he was very angry4 ,for ,he saw in it oxen and sheep1 doves and pigeons waiting to be sold to people for sacrifice1 and tables with heaps of money on them that came from all lands2 for the men whose the tables were1 changed the gold of far off countries for the ,jew's money4 ,do you not think it was very wrong of men to bring oxen1 and lambs1 and money to change into ,god's ,house8 ,our ,lord was very angry to see it4 ,he made a whip of small cords and drove out the oxen and sheep2 and ,he upset the tables of money1 and the seats of those who sold doves1 and said1 ,take these things away4 ,do not make my ,father's house a place to buy and sell in4 ,the men whom the ,lord drove out were very angry1 but they knew that ,he was quite right1 and so they did not strive against ,him4 ,but the priests1 who ought not to have allowed such things1 came to ,jesus and said1 ,give us some sign1 you have a right to do this4 ,they meant1 do some miracle4 ,but our ,lord would not do a miracle for them4 ,he said the only sign that should be given them was1 that if they killed ,him ,he would rise again in three days4 ,but they did not know what ,his words meant4 ,while ,jesus was here a very good and wise rich man1 named ,nicodemus1 came to see ,him by night4 ,he did not go to see ,jesus in the daytime1 because he was afraid of the ,jews2 but ,our ,lord taught him a great many things4 ,among others1 that ,god so loved the ,world that ,he gave ,his only begotten ,son1 that whosoever believed in ,him should not perish1 but have everlasting life4 ,for ,god sent ,his ,son into the ,world that through ,him it might be saved4 ,illustration3 ,,nicodemus ,,being ,,taught ,,by ,,christ4 ,then ,jesus left the ,city1 and went about teaching and doing good1 healing the sick1 making the blind see1 and the deaf hear1 and so ,he came to ,samaria4 ,now the ,jews hated the people who lived there2 and the ,samaritans hated the ,jews4 ,our ,lord never hated any one4 ,he loved both the good and the bad1 and came to save all4 ,of course ,god loves good men or good children best2 ,our ,lord loved ,his ,apostle ,john best of all1 but ,he does good to all men1 and lets ,his sun shine on all alike4 ,one day ,our ,lord was very tired2 ,he had been teaching the poor and making the sick well1 and ,he had walked a long way1 and ,he wanted food4 ,so ,he sat down on the stone edge of an old well in ,samaria1 while the disciples went to buy food1 and while ,he sat there a woman came from the town with a jug to draw water4 ,and ,jesus said to her1 ,give me some to drink4 ,but she said1 ,how is it that you1 who are a ,jew1 ask me1 who am a ,samaritan1 for drink8 for the ,jews will not have anything to do with the ,samaritans4 ,jesus told her that if she had but known ,who it was that asked her for drink1 she would have begged ,him to give her living water4 ,the woman said1 ,you have not anything to draw the water in1 and the well is deep4 ,how can you get living water8 ,are you greater than our father1 ,jacob1 who gave us this well8 ,but ,our ,lord told her that they who drank the water of that well would be thirsty again2 but that if she drank of the water ,he could give her she should never thirst2 it should give her life that would not end4 ,what did ,our ,lord mean by living water8 ,he meant ,god's grace--that is--,god's help to make us good4 ,the woman did not know what ,he meant1 so she said1 ,give me this water that ,i may not have to come here to draw any more4 ,then ,our ,lord told her of her sins2 ,he knew that she was not good2 ,he knew all her past life1 and ,he told her about ,god1 and that ,he must be worshipped in spirit and in truth4 ,the woman said1 ,i know that ,christ will come soon1 and ,he will tell us all things4 ,think how glad she must have been when ,our ,lord said1 ,i1 that speak unto you1 am ,he4 ,just then ,his disciples came1 and they wondered that ,he talked to a ,samaritan woman4 ,she left her water-pot1 and went to tell her friends1 and to ask them to come and see ,jesus4 ,the disciples said to ,our ,lord1 ,master1 eat2 they had brought food2 but ,jesus cared more to do ,god's work than to eat1 though ,he was hungry4 ,the woman brought many of the people of the town to ,our ,lord1 and they believed that ,he was the ,christ1 and begged that ,he would stay with them and teach them2 and ,he did stay there for two days4 ,how good our ,lord was to stay and teach these poor men1 to whom the proud ,jews would not even speak4 ,then ,jesus went to ,cana again where ,he had made the water into wine2 and a rich man who had a young son very ill came to ,him and begged ,him to make his child well4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,and ,,the ,,woman ,,of ,,samaria4 ,our ,lord wanted to try the man's faith1 so ,he did not say1 ,yes1 ,i will1 at once4 ,he said1 ,if you do not see signs and wonders you will not believe4 ,but the man said again1 ,sir1 do come down or my son will be dead4 ,our ,lord pitied him and said1 ,go thy way1 thy son liveth4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,and ,,the ,,rich ,,man4 ,jesus could cure the sick boy without seeing him4 ,the rich man had faith2 he believed ,our ,lord's words and went his way1 but before he reached his house his servants met him1 and said1 ,your son is getting well4 ,when did he begin to get better8 asked the father4 ,yesterday1 at the seventh hour1 the fever left him1 they said4 ,then the father knew that it was at the very same hour that ,our ,lord spoke that his son was made well4 ,and now ,our ,lord came to ,nazareth where ,he had been brought up1 and ,he went into the synagogue--that is the ,jews' chapel--on the seventh day and ,he stood up to read4 ,the priest gave ,him the book4 ,it was that part of the ,bible where ,god told men what ,christ would do when ,he came1 how ,he would teach men1 and comfort sad people1 and make blind men see4 ,and when ,our ,lord had read it ,he gave the book back to the priest1 and said1 ,all this has come true to-day4 ,and ,he told them that ,he was the ,christ4 ,at first they liked to hear ,him preach1 for ,his words and voice were sweet2 but when ,he told them that ,he was ,christ they grew very angry1 and said1 ,is not this the carpenter's son8 ,he is not ,christ2 and they got up and dragged ,our ,lord out of the town to the edge of the hill on which their city was built1 that they might cast ,him down headlong and kill ,him4 ,but it was not the time ,jesus meant to die1 so ,he made them not able to see ,him1 and ,he walked through the midst of them and went away4 ,illustration3 ,,preaching ,,in ,,the ,,synagogue4 ,you see what bad men lived in ,nazareth4 ,they drove away the good1 gentle ,lord1 who came to save them from their sins1 because they were proud and jealous of ,him2 and ,he never again came to teach them4 ,he went down to ,capernaum1 another town by the ,sea of ,galilee1 and taught there and did many miracles1 and it was called ,his ,town4 ,our ,lord had not ,his disciples always with ,him yet2 ,john and ,james and ,andrew and ,peter had gone back to their boats to fish2 but now ,jesus wished them to be always with ,him1 so ,he called them again4 ,i will tell you how4 ,one day when ,jesus was on the sea-shore1 such crowds of people came to hear ,him speak to them that there was not room1 and they pressed upon ,him4 ,there were two large boats close to the shore2 the fishers had gone out of them and were washing their nets2 so our ,lord went into one of them1 which was ,peter's1 and asked him to push the boat a little way out from the land4 ,then ,he sat down and taught the people from the boat4 ,and when ,he had done speaking1 ,he said to ,peter1 ,pull out into the deep water and let down your nets to catch some fish4 ,but ,peter said1 ,master1 we have toiled all night and have not caught one fish2 but still at ,thy word ,i will let down the net4 ,peter thought that it would be of no use to do so1 but still he would obey the ,lord4 ,so he threw the net into the sea1 and heaps and heaps of fishes came into it directly1 so many that the net broke4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,miraculous ,,draught ,,of ,,fishes4 ,then ,peter called to the other boat1 in which were his partners1 ,james and ,john1 to help him1 and they came and filled both boats with fish2 there were so many that the boats began to sink4 ,when ,simon ,peter saw it he fell down at ,our ,lord's feet1 and said1 ,go away from me1 for ,i am a sinful man1 ,o ,lord4 ,for he was afraid4 ,but ,jesus said to him1 ,fear not2 from this time you shall catch men4 ,what did that mean8 ,peter knew1 and ,james and ,john knew2 it meant that they must not fish any more1 but come and try to draw men to the ,lord to make them good4 ,they were quite sure now that ,our ,lord was the ,christ1 so when they had brought their boats to the shore1 they left them and all they had1 and went with ,jesus1 and did not leave ,him any more till the end came4 ,after ,our ,lord had been away for a time from ,capernaum1 ,he went back there4 ,as soon as the people heard it they came in great numbers to the house ,jesus was in1 to see and hear ,him4 ,now the houses in that land are not like ours3 they have flat roofs1 on which you can walk or sit1 and a staircase outside the house leads up to it4 ,most of the houses--all the large ones--have a court in the middle of them4 ,the people crowded into the court of the house where ,our ,lord was1 and ,he preached to them there4 ,more and more came in till there was no room1 not so much as about the door4 ,now there was a poor man in the town who was sick of the palsy1 so that he could not move2 and lay always on a bed4 ,he wished very much to go to ,our ,lord for help1 and his friends who loved him had him carried by four men on a kind of bed to the house where the ,lord ,jesus was1 but they could not come near ,him through the crowd4 ,so they carried him up to the roof1 and took off enough of the tiles to make room for them to let the bed down by ropes put at each of the four corners1 and thus they lowered it down with him on it1 right in the front of the ,lord4 ,he looked at the sick man1 and said1 ,son1 thy sins be forgiven thee4 ,jesus knows all we think1 and ,he knew the poor man wished more to be forgiven for his sins than to be made well4 ,but some of the ,jews--lawyers--who hated ,our ,lord1 thought to themselves1 ,how wickedly this man speaks4 ,who can forgive sins but ,god only8 ,they did not think the ,lord could know their thoughts2 but ,he did know them1 and ,he said1 ,why do you think this in your hearts8 ,is it easier to say to the sick man1 ,your sins are forgiven1 or to say1 ,arise1 take up your bed and walk8 ,but that you may know that 7,i7 the ,son of ,man have power on earth to forgive sins1 ,i will do so4 ,and then our ,lord said to the sick man1 who could not move1 ,arise1 and take up thy bed1 and go thy way into thine house4 ,and the sick man rose up and stood1 and took up his bed and walked out before them all4 ,and they were amazed1 and praised ,god1 saying1 ,we never saw anything like it before4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,south ,,side ,,of ,,the ,,sea ,,of ,,galilee4 ,after ,our ,lord had made the sick man well1 ,he walked down to the shore of the beautiful sea of ,galilee4 ,the crowd followed ,him1 and there in the fresh1 sweet air1 ,he went on teaching them4 ,not far off was a place called the ,receipt of ,custom4 ,i will tell you for what it was used4 ,the ,romans made the ,jews pay them money1 and this was called a tax4 ,they put men in some places to receive this tax for them1 and these men were called ,publicans4 ,they were not good men generally1 and the priests and great men hated them2 but some of them were just and honest4 ,levi was2 and we may be sure he had heard ,our ,lord preach and loved ,him1 for one day1 as he was sitting at the place where men paid the tax to him1 ,our ,lord went up to him and said1 ,follow ,me4 ,levi must have known who spoke to him1 for he at once rose and was ready to give up all his riches and go with ,jesus4 ,and he was so glad that the ,lord had called him that he gave a feast at his house1 and asked all his friends to come to it to meet their ,saviour4 ,his friends were most of them ,publicans like himself1 and not all good men2 but ,jesus and ,his disciples sat down and ate with them4 ,now some of the ,jews hated ,our ,lord2 these were the ,scribes and ,pharisees4 ,the ,scribes were men who wrote out the laws--there were no printed books in those days--so they were thought wise2 the ,pharisees were a set of men who pretended to serve ,god better than any other people1 and made a show of praying1 saying their prayers in the streets to be seen of men2 but they were not really good4 ,these men came now1 and said to ,jesus1 ,how can ,you sit down to eat with publicans and sinners8 ,jesus said1 ,men who are well do not want a doctor1 but those who are sick do4 ,i am not come to call good men to be sorry for their sins1 but bad men4 ,the ,pharisees did not know that they and all men were sinners1 and that all must be saved by ,jesus4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,receipt ,,of ,,custom4 ,now ,i must tell you that ,levi had two names1 as you have4 ,his first name was ,matthew1 and a long time after1 he wrote the story of ,our ,lord's life4 ,it is called the ,gospel--that means good news--of ,st4 ,matthew1 and it is in the ,bible4 ,now just as the feast was ending there came a ruler and he threw himself down at ,jesus' feet1 and said1 ,my daughter is dying1 but come and lay ,your hands on her and she shall live4 ,this ruler's name was ,jairus2 he had great faith4 ,and ,jesus rose up at once and went with him1 and so did ,his disciples4 ,and as they went along the road a poor woman who had been ill for years and had spent all her money to pay doctors1 who did her no good1 crept softly up behind ,our ,lord and just touched the hem of ,his robe1 for she said1 ,if ,i may but touch ,his robe ,i shall be well4 ,there was a great mob of people at the time and they pressed up against ,jesus1 but ,he stopped1 and said1 ,who touched ,me8 ,then ,peter and the rest said1 ,master1 all the people press on ,you2 why do ,you ask 'who touched ,me8' ,and ,jesus said1 ,some one has touched ,me4 ,then the woman came and knelt down1 and said1 ,i did1 and ,jesus was pleased with her faith and told her to go in peace1 and she was quite cured4 ,then they went on to ,jairus' house4 ,the little girl was dead2 but ,jesus took the father and mother and ,peter1 ,james1 and ,john with ,him and went in where she lay and took her little hand1 and said1 ,maid1 arise4 ,and the little girl came to life and got up1 and ,jesus told them to give her something to eat4 ,how glad her father and mother must have been to have their dear child again1 alive and well6 ,how they must have thanked and blessed ,our ,lord6 ,all her friends would always believe in ,him now2 and do you not think the little girl--she was only twelve years old--must have loved the ,lord ,jesus very much1 and tried to be good to please ,him4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,raising ,,of ,,jairus' ,,daughter4 ,when ,jesus left the house where ,he had raised the child from the dead1 two blind men followed ,him crying1 ,thou ,son of ,david1 have mercy on us4 ,when they called the ,lord the ,son of ,david1 they meant that they believed ,he was the ,christ4 ,and they followed ,him into the house4 ,and ,jesus said to them1 ,do you believe ,i can make you see8 ,they said1 ,yes1 ,lord4 ,then he touched their eyes and said1 ,as your faith is so be it unto you4 ,and their eyes were opened and they could see4 ,they had told the truth1 they did believe in ,jesus2 if they had said they did untruly they would not have been cured4 ,our ,lord told them not to let any one know it2 but when they were gone they told about it everywhere4 ,when ,jesus went out again they brought to ,him a dumb man2 ,our ,lord ordered him to speak and he did so4 ,indeed no poor sick man came to ,him in vain4 ,he made lepers well1 and cured a man with dropsy2 and made a crooked woman straight4 ,he made the dumb speak1 the deaf hear1 the blind see1 the cripple walk4 ,we cannot in this little book tell you half the kind1 good1 and wonderful things ,our ,lord did while ,he was on earth4 ,and ,he sent ,his apostles also to teach the people1 and made them able to heal the sick and to do other miracles4 ,one day the disciples were angry because one who was not a disciple cured a man in ,christ's ,name1 but ,our ,lord said1 ,forbid him not1 for even he who gives you a cup of water in ,my ,name1 shall not lose his reward4 ,about this time there was a feast of the ,jews1 and ,jesus went up to ,jerusalem4 ,now there was at ,jerusalem by the sheep-market a pool of water which was called ,bethesda1 that means ,house of ,mercy4 ,round it were five porches or doorways1 and in these lay a great many poor sick men4 ,there was something wonderful about the pool4 ,at times in the year the water bubbled up--the ,jews said an angel made it do so4 ,the first person who stepped into the pool as it bubbled was cured at once4 ,so many sick men waited for the chance4 ,one man was there who had been crippled for thirty-eight years4 ,the ,lord ,jesus walked down one day to this pool1 and when ,he saw the poor man and heard how long he had been thus1 ,he said to him1 ,will you be made well8 ,the helpless man thought ,our ,lord meant1 ,will you not go into the pool1 for he answered1 ,sir1 ,i have no man who will put me in when the pool is bubbling1 and while ,i try to get to it another man steps down before me4 ,it was1 as you know1 only the first who stepped in after the water was troubled that was cured4 ,then ,jesus said1 ,take up your bed and walk4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,cripple ,,at ,,the ,,pool ,,of ,,bethesda4 ,and the man who could not move at all at once rose1 took up his bed--a rug most likely--and walked4 ,now it was the ,sabbath day1 and you know how strict the ,jews were about it4 ,they said at once to the man who was cured1 ,why do you carry your bed on the ,sabbath day8 it is forbidden by the law4 ,the man said1 ,he that made me well said to me1 ',take up your bed and walk4' ,when they asked him1 ,what man was it who told you to do so8 ,but the man did not know1 because ,jesus had gone away with the crowd4 ,afterwards ,jesus found him in the ,temple and said to him1 ,you are well now2 do not sin again lest a worse thing come on you4 ,the man must have been a sinner1 and ,jesus told him to take care to be a better man1 or ,god might punish him with a worse illness1 but he was so ungrateful that1 though he must have known the ,jews would be angry with ,our ,lord for making him well on the ,sabbath day1 he went at once to them and told them that it was ,jesus who had made him well4 ,the priests were very angry1 but ,jesus said to them1 ,my ,father works on the ,sabbath and so do ,i4 ,then they wanted to kill ,him1 because he had not only done a miracle on the ,sabbath1 but said that ,god was ,his ,father1 making ,himself equal with ,god4 ,and so1 you know1 ,he was2 but these wicked ,jews would not believe it2 they were jealous of ,him because the people loved ,him1 and angry because ,he told them how wicked they were4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,treasure ,,hid ,,in ,a ,,field4 ,our ,lord told ,his disciples one day this pretty parable4 ,the ,kingdom of ,heaven is like treasure--that is1 something precious like gold or gems--hid in a field1 and a man who knows about it1 and wishes to get it1 sells all that he has and buys the field2 the treasure is then his and he digs it up4 ,in that country much gold had been hidden in the ground by men who fled from their enemies1 and never came back to dig it up again1 and there were many who sought for it4 ,this parable means that the kingdom of ,god1 the love of ,christ1 and ,his help to make us good are so precious that we should give up anything for them1 and try as hard as we can to gain them4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,and ,,his ,,disciples ,,in ,,the ,,corn-,,field4 ,our ,lord and ,his disciples were poor1 and sometimes wanted food4 ,one ,sabbath day they were walking through the corn-fields1 and the disciples were hungry1 so they picked some ears of corn1 rubbed them in their hands1 and ate the wheat4 ,the ,jews might eat corn in the fields on week-days1 but the ,pharisees had made many hard and silly rules about the ,sabbath day4 ,god had said that they must keep the seventh day holy2 but ,he meant it to be a rest from work and a day for men to pray to ,him1 not a day such as they made it4 ,the ,pharisees said that no fire might be lighted on the ,sabbath day1 no food cooked1 not one thing might be done2 they might only walk a little way on that day2 and doctors might not cure or help the sick4 ,so it was a day when men1 and children too1 were not happy1 as ,god meant them to be4 ,now1 when the ,pharisees saw the disciples eat the corn1 they said1 ,why do you do that which is not right on the ,sabbath day8 ,our ,lord answered1 and told them that there was no harm in ,his disciples eating the corn1 for men must eat on the ,sabbath day1 and that we might do needful things on it4 ,then ,he went into the synagogue1 and ,he saw there a man with a withered hand4 ,and the ,jews said to ,christ1 ,is it right to make men well on the ,sabbath day8 ,and ,jesus said1 ,yes1 it is2 for if a sheep fell into a pit on the ,sabbath day you would take it out1 and a man ought to be helped more than a sheep4 ,and ,he told the poor man to stretch out his hand2 he did so1 and found that ,jesus had made it well1 and just like the other hand4 ,and the ,pharisees were so angry because ,he had told men that they were wrong1 that they began to talk about killing ,him4 ,but ,jesus went away when ,he knew it2 and a great crowd of people followed ,him1 and ,he made all the sick ones well4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,sermon ,,on ,,the ,,mount4 ,one day1 when ,he saw how many there were following ,him1 ,he wished to teach them1 and1 that they might hear ,him well1 ,he went up on a mount close by1 and sat down4 ,the ,jews always sat down to preach4 ,and when ,he was seated1 ,his disciples came to ,him1 and the words ,he then spoke are called the ,sermon on the ,mount4 ,you will read it when you are older2 it is too hard for you now1 but we may tell you a few things out of it4 ,jesus told them that ,god would bless those who were humble--that is1 not proud--and the meek and gentle4 ,he said that ,god would comfort those who were sad2 that ,he would bless those who were kind2 that the pure in heart should see ,god1 and that those who made up quarrels should be called ,god's children4 ,he told them that they need not take thought about how they should get food and clothes4 ,see1 ,he said1 the birds of the air3 ,god feeds them2 ,he will also feed you2 and look at the lilies3 they toil not1 neither do they spin1 yet the grandest king in all his glory was not arrayed--that is1 dressed--like one of them4 ,seek to please ,god1 and ,he will take care of you4 ,then ,he taught them to say the prayer ,our ,father1 just as you do now at your mother's knee4 ,when ,jesus had ended the ,sermon on the ,mount1 ,he came down1 and a great many people followed ,him2 and there came a leper1 and knelt down to ,him1 and said1 ,lord1 if ,you will1 ,you can make me clean4 ,a leper was a man whose flesh was eaten away by disease2 sometimes the fingers and feet of the leper would fall off4 ,no one could cure him1 and men might catch the complaint1 so the lepers were kept in a place by themselves2 and if they went into the town1 they had to cry as they went1 ,unclean6 unclean6 ,we are sure that1 when this leper came to ,christ1 all the people got out of his way1 and would not touch the poor man4 ,but ,our ,lord put out ,his kind hand and touched him1 and said1 ,i will2 be thou clean2 and in a moment the leper was quite well2 and ,our ,lord told him to go to the priest and offer a gift of thanks to ,god4 ,no one but ,god can cure a leper2 but ,jesus is ,god1 and ,he could4 ,illustration3 ,,christ ,,and ,,the ,,centurion4 ,now1 when ,our ,lord had come to ,capernaum1 there came a ,roman1 the captain of a hundred men1 and begged ,him to make his servant well1 for he was very ill with the palsy4 ,our ,lord said at once1 ,i will come and heal him4 ,but the ,roman captain said1 ,lord1 ,i am not good enough for ,you to come to my house1 but speak the word only1 and my servant will be well4 ,you see1 this ,roman had even more faith than the rich man1 whose son was ill4 ,for1 the ,roman went on1 if ,i tell my servants to do anything1 they do it2 and ,you1 who rule all things1 need only speak to be obeyed4 ,and ,jesus wondered at the ,roman's words1 and said1 ,verily1 ,i have not found such great faith1 no1 not in ,israel1 and ,he said to the centurion1 ,go your way2 and as you have believed so be it done unto you4 ,and the man went home1 and found his servant well4 ,then ,jesus went to ,peter's house1 and made his wife's mother well of a fever1 and healed many more sick1 and made the blind see and the deaf hear4 ,we cannot1 in this little book1 tell you half of the good and kind things ,our ,lord did4 ,jesus sometimes told ,his disciples lovely tales that meant something more than just the story1 so they were called ,parables4 ,one of these was that the ,kingdom of ,heaven is like a merchant who wanted to buy good pearls4 ,you know what pearls are1 do you not8 ,they are pure white shining beads that men find in the shell of the oyster4 ,to get them the fishers have to go down to the bottom of the sea2 so1 of course1 they sell the pearls very dear4 ,now1 when the pearl-fishers had found a very large pearl of great price1 they took it to the merchant2 it would cost a great deal1 but he knew it was worth even more2 so he sold all he had and bought it4 ,now this story means that ,god's ,kingdom is such a beautiful place1 and that it is so good for us to serve ,christ here1 that we should give up all that we most care for to gain the love of ,god4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,miracle ,,at ,,nain4 ,one day1 ,our ,lord1 with ,his disciples and a great crowd who followed ,him1 came near a little town called ,nain4 ,and just as ,he drew near the gate of the city a dead young man was brought out to be buried4 ,his mother was walking by the side of the bier and crying very much1 for her husband was dead1 and she had no other son4 ,and when ,our ,lord saw her ,he had pity on her1 and said1 ,weep not1 and ,he came and touched the bier1 and the men who were carrying it stood still4 ,and ,jesus said1 ,young man1 ,i say unto thee1 ,arise6 ,and the dead man came to life and sat up and began to speak1 and the ,lord gave him to his mother4 ,and there came a great fear on all who saw it1 and they said1 ,god has visited ,his people4 ,another parable ,jesus told them was of a sower who went out to sow seed4 ,and as he cast the seeds about some of them fell by the wayside2 and the birds came and ate them up2 some fell on stony places where they had not much earth to grow in1 and they sprang up fast1 because they were not deep in the ground2 but when the sun came out1 it burned them up quite dry1 for they had no root2 and some fell among thorns1 and the thorns sprang up and choked them--that is1 did not leave them room to grow4 ,but some fell on good ground1 and grew up and brought forth much fruit4 ,the ,apostles did not quite know what hidden meaning there was in this ,parable1 so ,jesus told them4 ,the seed meant the ,word of ,god2 the sower1 a servant of ,god who had to teach the ,word4 ,the seed that fell by the wayside meant that the words had not been cared for by those who heard them1 and the ,wicked ,spirit then made them forget all they had heard4 ,that which fell on stony places and had no depth of earth1 meant those who at first are glad to hear of ,god's love1 and seem as if they would be ,his children2 but their goodness has no root1 and so a little trouble makes them give up trying4 ,we must all ask ,god to keep us ,christ's children4 ,the seed that fell among thorns meant that sometimes when men have been taught about ,god1 they let the love of money and the cares of life and its pleasures fill their minds so that they have no time or thought to give to ,god1 or to read and pray4 ,those seeds that fell on good ground meant the children or men who listen to ,god's ,word1 and read it1 and pray to ,him for help1 and try to obey it4 ,these grow better and better1 and ,god will love and help them4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,sower4 ,our ,lord was often very tired when ,he had been making sick people well and teaching them by these lovely stories2 and then ,he would go up a mountain alone and pray to ,his ,father in ,heaven1 or cross the sea to some other place1 for ,he had hardly time to eat or sleep4 ,one day ,he was very tired and the sun had set1 so ,he said to ,his disciples1 ,let us cross to the other side4 ,then they sent away the crowd of people and took ,jesus in the ship1 and put out to sea1 and there were with them many other little ships4 ,and there arose a great wind2 the waves were high and beat into the boat1 so that it was full of water and going to sink2 but ,our ,lord was fast asleep1 with his head on a pillow1 in the stern of the ship4 ,the disciples were much afraid1 and they woke him1 saying1 ,lord1 do you not care that we perish8 ,then ,jesus rose and stood up and spoke to the wind and waves1 and said1 ,peace--that is1 ,hush6--be still4 ,and the wind stopped blowing1 and the waves grew still1 and there was a great calm4 ,then the disciples said to each other1 ,what kind of man is this1 that even the wind and the sea obey ,him8 ,they ought to have known1 for they had seen ,him raise the dead4 ,you know1 do you not8 ,he was the ,son of ,god4 ,illustration3 ,,christ ,,stilling ,,the ,,tempest4 ,our ,lord chose twelve of the men who followed ,him to be his apostles1 and ,he sent seventy of ,his disciples out to teach1 and gave them power to make sick people well4 ,the apostles also1 were sent1 but after a time they came back to ,our ,lord1 and told ,him all that they had done and taught4 ,and ,he said to them1 ,come ye apart into a desert place and rest awhile1 for there were many coming and going1 and they had not even time to eat4 ,and they went by ship with ,him to a desert place near a city called ,bethsaida4 ,but when the people found out where ,he had gone1 they came in crowds after ,him4 ,our ,lord was very kind to them4 ,he went to this desert place to rest1 but ,he did not care for rest or food1 if ,he could do good1 so ,he did not say1 ,why did you come here8 but ,he went up on a mount and told them about ,god1 and made all the sick ones well4 ,and when the day began to wear away1 the twelve apostles came to ,him1 and said1 ,send this great crowd away that they may go to the towns near and get food1 for this is a desert place4 ,then ,jesus said to ,philip1 ,where shall we get bread that these may eat8 ,and this ,he said to try him1 for ,he ,himself knew what ,he would do4 ,and ,philip said1 ,a great deal of bread would not be enough to give each of them a little piece4 ,then ,andrew said1 ,there is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fishes1 but what are they among so many8 ,and ,jesus said1 ,make the men sit down4 ,and they sat down on the grass1 fifty in one place1 and there were five thousand men there4 ,then ,jesus took the loaves1 and when ,he had given thanks ,he broke them1 and gave the pieces to ,his disciples1 and they gave them to the people2 and ,he gave them of the fishes as much as they would1 and they all ate and left many pieces4 ,then ,our ,lord told the ,apostles to gather the pieces up so that nothing might be lost2 for ,jesus does not like people to waste things1 and they picked up enough pieces to fill twelve baskets with the bread that was left4 ,was not this a very great miracle8 ,the people who saw it said at once1 that ,our ,lord was the ,christ that was to come1 and they wanted to make ,him a ,king2 and when ,he would not be one1 they thought they would take ,him by force and crown ,him2 but ,jesus sent ,his disciples away and went into a mountain all by ,himself and prayed to ,his ,father4 ,this miracle made the people believe in our ,lord more than any other4 ,they thought that ,he ,who could feed them when they were hungry1 must be the promised ,saviour2 and they had been taught by the priests that when ,christ came ,he would be a king1 that ,he would free them from the ,romans and make them rich and great4 ,that was a great mistake4 ,the ,christ was coming to set them free from their sins1 and bring them to ,his ,heavenly ,kingdom1 not only to do them good on earth4 ,illustration3 ,,feeding ,,the ,,five ,,thousand4 ,and when the sun had set the disciples were on the sea1 and it was now dark1 and ,jesus was not come to them4 ,the wind blew1 and the great waves rose4 ,how they must have wished ,our ,lord had been there to hush the storm4 ,but ,jesus saw them1 and in the middle of the night ,he went to them2 ,he had no boat so ,he walked on the sea4 ,can men walk on the sea8 ,no2 but ,our ,lord could1 because ,he was ,god4 ,when the disciples saw ,him1 they were afraid1 and cried out4 ,but ,jesus spoke to them at once1 and said1 ,fear not1 it is ,i4 ,and ,peter said1 ,lord1 if it is ,you tell me to come to ,you on the sea4 ,and ,jesus said1 ,come4 ,peter stepped out of the boat and walked on the water to go to ,jesus1 but when he saw the great waves1 he was afraid and began to sink2 and he cried out1 ,lord1 save me4 ,then ,jesus at once put out ,his hand1 and caught him1 and said1 ,o why have you so little faith6 ,and when they had both got into the boat1 the wind left off blowing1 and the ship was at the place they were going to at once4 ,then those in the ship came and knelt down to ,jesus1 and said1 ,of a truth1 ,thou art the ,son of ,god4 ,one day1 ,our ,lord was with ,his apostles near the place where the ,jews' land joined that of the people who did not know about ,god4 ,and a poor woman of that country followed ,him1 and cried after ,him1 ,have mercy on me1 ,o ,lord1 ,thou ,son of ,david1 for my daughter is very ill4 ,but ,he did not answer her2 and so she kept crying to ,him till the apostles said1 ,send her away1 for she crieth after us4 ,they wanted ,our ,lord to cure her child1 so that she might go away4 ,but ,jesus said1 ,i am not sent to any but the ,jews4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,walking ,,on ,,the ,,sea4 ,illustration3 ,,our ,,lord ,,and ,,the ,,woman ,,of ,,canaan4 ,then the woman came and kneeled down to ,him1 and said1 ,lord1 help me4 ,and ,jesus said1 ,it is not right to take the children's bread and cast it to the dogs4 ,did not ,our ,lord seem unkind8 ,but ,he was not2 ,he was only trying the woman's faith4 ,but she was very humble2 she said1 ,that is true1 ,lord1 but the dogs eat of the crumbs that fall from their master's table4 ,then ,jesus said1 ,o woman1 great is thy faith1 be it unto thee even as thou wilt2 and her daughter was made well that very hour4 ,this woman was at first of the ,greek religion2 that is1 she had worshipped and prayed to idols of stone1 whom she called ,jove and ,apollo and ,diana4 ,but she had heard of the ,god of the ,jews1 and we think had given up her false gods and believed in ,him2 for she knew of the expected ,christ1 and that he would be of ,david's family4 ,then her dear child was ill1 and she went to ,jesus for help4 ,very great was her faith1 as ,our ,lord said4 ,this was the second miracle ,our ,lord did for people who were not ,jews1 but who had learned to believe in ,god4 ,our ,lord was often spoken to as ,he went on ,his way by people who thought they would like to be ,his disciples1 but had not faith enough in the end to give up the things they loved to go with ,him4 ,once a man said to ,him1 ,i will follow ,you wherever ,you go4 ,and ,jesus said1 ,foxes have holes1 and the birds of the air have nests1 but ,i1 the ,son of ,man1 have not where to lay ,my head4 ,for the ,lord ,jesus was very poor2 ,he had no home then on earth4 ,he stayed1 we read1 sometimes in ,peter's house1 and with other friends of whom we shall tell you by-and-by4 ,we do not know if the man who spoke still wished to follow ,christ2 we fear he did not1 or we should have heard he did4 ,another day as ,he was going on ,his way1 a young man ran up to ,him1 kneeled down1 and said1 ,good ,master1 what good thing shall ,i do that ,i may have eternal life8 ,and ,jesus said1 ,why do you ask ,me concerning that which is good8,a ,one there is who is good2 but1 if you would enter into life keep ,god's ,commandments4 ,the young man asked ,which8 ,jesus said1 ,thou shalt not kill2 thou shalt not steal2 thou shalt not bear false witness2 honour thy father and mother2 thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself4 ,the young man said1 ,i have kept all these2 what is wanting in me8 ,and ,our ,lord looking on him loved him1 for he was very good2 but he had one great fault1 he loved money1 and ,jesus said1 ,if you would be perfect1 go and sell what you have and give to the poor1 and you shall have treasure in ,heaven2 and come1 and follow ,me4 ,but when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful1 for he had great riches1 and he did not like to part with them and go about poor with ,our ,lord's disciples4 ,we are sure that ,jesus was sorry for him1 and we hope he came back afterwards1 but we do not know4 ,poor young man6 he was so good that we think perhaps in the end he did4 ,our ,blessed ,lord went through every city and village telling them the glad tidings of the ,kingdom of ,god1 and the twelve apostles were with ,him4 ,there were some women with them also whom ,christ had made well4 ,one was called ,mary ,magdalene1 who had been cured of a sad disease1 and ,joanna1 the wife of ,herod's steward1 and ,susannah1 and many others1 who brought ,our ,lord and ,his apostles food1 and did all they could to serve ,him4 ,jesus had many friends as well as cruel enemies4 ,there were some good people who lived at ,bethany1 a pretty little village near ,jerusalem4 ,they were two sisters and a brother1 called ,martha1 ,mary1 and ,lazarus4 ,when ,our ,lord was at ,jerusalem1 ,he often went to see them2 and they were very glad to have ,him in their house4 ,martha bustled about to get a feast for ,him and ,his apostles one day when ,he came there2 but ,mary sat at his feet listening to ,his words4 ,then ,martha thought her sister ought to help her1 so she came1 and said1 ,lord1 do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone8 ,bid her help me4 ,but ,jesus said to her1 ,martha1 ,martha1 you are careful and troubled about many things2 there is only one thing needful2 and ,mary has chosen that good part that shall not be taken away from her4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,with ,,mary ,,and ,,martha4 ,jesus was not angry with ,martha2 ,he only told her not to be so full of care about earthly things1 but to care most for listening to ,his words4 ,we cannot hear ,christ's voice now1 but we can hear and read ,his words still4 ,do you know where they are found8 ,in the ,bible4 ,our ,lord prayed a great deal4 ,sometimes ,he prayed all night long2 ,he loved to pray to ,his ,father in ,heaven4 ,and one day ,he told a pretty story to ,his disciples to teach them how to pray4 ,two men went into the ,temple to pray4 ,one was a ,pharisee1 the other a publican4 ,the ,pharisee stood and prayed1 and said1 ,god1 ,i thank ,thee that ,i am not as bad as other men1 or even as this publican2 ,i obey ,thy law4 ,the publican stood a great way off and would not lift up so much as his eyes unto ,heaven1 but struck his breast with his hand to show he was sorry1 and said1 ,god be merciful to me a sinner4 ,the ,pharisee boasted how good he was2 the publican only asked ,god to forgive him4 ,which of the two prayed best8 ,our ,lord said the publican did2 for ,god will not hear the prayers of the proud1 but listens to those of the humble4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,pharisee ,,and ,,the ,,publican4 ,the ,lord ,jesus has told us that ,god will give us what we ask for in prayer if we do not pray for wrong things4 ,he says1 ,ask1 and ye shall receive2 seek1 and ye shall find2 knock1 and it shall be opened unto you4 ,the meaning is1 ,if you ask ,god's help1 ,he will give it2 if you seek to find out what is ,his will1 you will find it2 if you beg ,god to make you understand ,his word1 ,he will let you2 for ,our ,lord said1 ,if a son ask his father for bread1 will he give him a stone1 or1 if he ask a fish1 will he give him a serpent8--that is1 a snake4 ,no2 you know he will not4 ,since1 then1 even men who are not good will be kind to their children1 how much more will your ,heavenly ,father give good things to them who ask ,him6 ,the ,lord loves to hear the prayer of a little child4 ,you may pray when you like2 at your mothers knee1 or in the day if you feel you want ,god's help4 ,he will hear you if you say in your mind1 ,make me a good child1 for ,christ's sake4 ,one day a lawyer stood up from among the crowd who listened to ,our ,lord and asked ,jesus a question4 ,he did it to try the ,lord and see if ,he would say something that the priests might think wrong4 ,he said1 ,master1 what shall ,i do to gain eternal life--that is1 life in ,heaven8 ,and ,jesus said1 ,what is written in the law8 ,and the lawyer said1 ,the law tells me that ,i must love the ,lord my ,god with all my heart1 and with all my soul1 and with all my strength1 and my neighbour as myself4 ,our ,lord said1 ,you have answered right2 do this and live4 ,but the lawyer1 not yet satisfied1 asked1 ,who is my neighbour8 ,and ,our ,lord answered by telling him a pretty story4 ,a man went down from ,jerusalem to ,jericho3 it was a wild1 lonely road over the hills2 and he met some thieves who robbed him1 took off his clothes1 wounded him1 and left him for dead by the road-side4 ,and by chance a priest came by that way but he did not help the poor man2 he crossed over to the other side of the way and went on4 ,then1 a ,levite1 one of the men who served the priests in the ,temple1 came that way2 he stopped and looked at the poor man1 and then left him and crossed to the other side of the road4 ,next1 a ,samaritan came along--you remember1 do you not1 that the ,jews hated the ,samaritans8--but this man1 when he saw the poor wounded ,jew lying in the road1 had pity on him4 ,and he went to him and bound up his wounds1 putting oil and wine to them1 as people used then to do2 and he lifted him off the hard ground and put him on his own beast and brought him to an inn and took care of him4 ,and the next day1 when he had to go away1 he called the host--that is1 the man who kept the inn--and gave him two pence--which were worth more than a shilling--and said1 ,take care of the poor man1 and whatever you spend ,i will repay you when ,i come again4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,road ,,from ,,jerusalem ,,to ,,jericho4 ,which of these three men do you think was neighbour to the man who fell among thieves8 asked ,our ,lord4 ,and the lawyer could not help answering1 ,he that had mercy on him4 ,then ,jesus said to him1 ,go and do the same4 ,one day ,our ,lord told ,his disciples of what would happen soon1 how ,he must go up to ,jerusalem and die for them and for all the world2 and that made them very sad4 ,about eight days after1 ,he took ,peter and ,james and ,john with ,him and went up a high mountain to pray4 ,it was late1 and the disciples were tired1 and while ,jesus prayed they fell asleep4 ,but a great light woke them1 and then they saw a wonderful thing4 ,our ,lord's face shone like the sun1 and ,his robe was white and glittering as the light2 and two men stood by ,him in shining white robes2 and the apostles knew that they were ,moses and ,elijah4 ,moses had been dead very1 very long1 and ,elijah had been taken up to ,heaven alive2 but now1 like two bright angels1 they talked with ,our ,lord4 ,what did they talk about8 ,of how ,jesus would go up to ,jerusalem and die to save men4 ,the disciples could not quite tell what it meant1 and ,peter said1 ,lord1 it is good for us to be here4 ,let us make here three tents for ,thee and ,moses and ,elijah1 not knowing what he said2 but1 as he spoke1 a bright cloud came over them1 and they were taken into it1 and a voice came out of the cloud and said1 ,this is ,my ,beloved ,son2 hear ,him4 ,and when the voice was past1 ,jesus was alone4 ,it was ,he who was ,god's ,dear ,son4 ,soon after this the disciples began to talk together about which of them should be greatest in the ,kingdom of ,heaven4 ,and ,jesus called a little child to ,him1 and when ,he had taken him in ,his arms1 ,he said to them1 ,whoever will receive one of such children in ,my name receiveth ,me1 and whosoever shall receive ,me receiveth not ,me but ,him that sent ,me4 ,and ,he told the apostles that they must be as gentle and humble as little children if they would be great in ,heaven1 for there the humble would be the first1 and the proud the last4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,and ,,the ,,little ,,children4 ,our ,lord loved little children very much4 ,soon after this1 some mothers brought their children and infants to ,jesus that ,he might touch and bless them2 but the apostles told them to go away and not to trouble the ,lord4 ,when ,jesus knew it ,he was very angry1 and said1 ,suffer little children to come unto ,me1 and do not forbid them1 for of such is the ,kingdom of ,god4 ,and ,he took the little ones in ,his arms1 put ,his hands upon them1 and blessed them4 ,how good and kind ,jesus was6 ,little children ought to love ,him with all their heart1 and be very good to please ,him4 ,our ,lord came1 you know1 to bear the punishment of our sins2 and ,he told some pretty parables to the ,pharisees to try and make them understand why ,he talked so much to bad men4 ,it was because ,his great love made ,him wish to save them4 ,he told them that if they had a great many sheep and one was lost1 the shepherd would leave all the others and go to find the lost one2 and when he had found it he would bring it back with great joy4 ,and ,he said3 ,if a woman has ten pieces of silver and she loses one she will light a candle and sweep the house and look carefully for it4 ,and when she has found it she will call her friends1 and say1 ,be glad with me2 ,i have found the piece that ,i had lost1 so--went on ,our ,lord--there is joy in ,heaven with the angels of ,god over one sinner that repenteth4 ,once ,our ,lord told ,his disciples a parable of a fig-tree4 ,fig-trees grow by the side of the road in that land1 and people might pick the figs4 ,but this fig-tree grew in a man's garden2 and for three years it had borne no figs4 ,then the master called his gardener and said to him1 ,for three years ,i have come to find figs on this tree and there are none2 cut it down2 it is of no use4 ,but the gardener said1 ,lord1 let it stay this year1 ,i will dig round it and manure it1 and if next year it bears fruit1 well2 but if not1 then you shall cut it down4 ,this parable meant that ,christ is always asking ,god1 ,his ,father1 to let us have time to be sorry for our sins before we die4 ,it meant1 too1 that ,he asked ,god to give the ,jews time to be sorry before ,he destroyed their city and sent them out of their own land4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,parable ,,of ,,the ,,lost ,,piece ,,of ,,money4 ,then ,he told them this other story3 ,once1 there was a man who had two sons4 ,the younger of the two said to him one day1 ',father1 give me now the share of your money you mean me to have4' ,and the kind father divided his money between the sons as the greedy one asked4 ,as soon as the younger son had his share he left his father's house and went to a far off land1 and there he spent his money in eating and drinking with bad people4 ,and when he had spent all he had1 great want came on that land2 there was very little food1 and bread was very dear4 ,now this sinful lad had no money left1 so he was obliged to go and be a servant to a man of that country1 who sent him into his fields to feed pigs2 and he had so little food and was so hungry that he would have liked to eat the husks the pigs ate1 and no man gave any food to him4 ,then he felt how sinful he had been1 and he said1 ',my father's servants have more bread to eat than they want1 while ,i shall die of hunger4 ,i will go back to my father1 and say to him1 ,father1 ,i have sinned against ,god and against you1 and am not fit to be called your son2 make me your servant4' ,and he arose and went to his father2 and when he was yet a great way off his father saw him--a poor1 ragged man--and he ran to meet him1 and fell on his neck1 and kissed him4 ,and the son said1 ',father1 ,i have sinned against ,heaven and against thee1 ,i am not good enough to be called thy son2 let me be one of thy servants4' ,but his father quite forgave him1 and told the servants to bring the best robe and put it on him1 and to put shoes on his feet1 and a ring on his hand1 and to cook the fat calf that they might eat2 and they were merry4 ,now1 when the elder son1 who was in the fields1 heard the sound of music and dancing1 and was told what the feast was for1 he was angry1 and would not go in2 his father came out and begged that he would4 ,but the son said1 ',i have been a good son1 but you did not give me a kid that ,i might make a feast for my friends2 yet1 now your wicked son is come who has spent all on bad living1 you have had the calf killed for him4' ,it was wrong of this son to be jealous1 was it not8 ,he ought to have been glad that his brother had come home again4 ,but his father said1 ',son1 you are always with me1 and all that ,i have is yours2 but it was right to be glad now1 for your brother who was dead is alive again1 was lost1 and is found4' ,illustration3 ,,the ,,return ,,of ,,the ,,prodigal ,,son4 ,jesus meant to teach us by this story that ,god will forgive us and love us as soon as we are sorry for being naughty4 ,people who keep on being naughty are said in ,god's ,book to be dead and lost--and so they are--till they are sorry and do better4 ,now it was winter-time1 and a feast was being kept in ,jerusalem4 ,our ,lord went to it1 and walked in the ,temple in ,solomon's ,porch4 ,then the ,jews came round about ,him1 and said1 ,how long do ,you mean to keep us in doubt--to be in doubt is not to be sure of a thing--,if ,you are ,christ1 tell us plainly8 ,jesus said1 ,i have told you1 and you would not believe ,me4 ,the works ,i do show that ,i am the ,christ1 but you will not believe4 ,ye are not ,my sheep4 ,my sheep hear ,my voice1 and ,i know them1 and they follow ,me1 and ,i give unto them eternal life1 and no man can take them out of ,my ,father's hand4 ,i and ,my ,father are one4 ,the ,jews knew that ,our ,lord meant to say that ,he was ,god1 for ,he was ,god's ,son1 and they were so angry that they took up stones to throw at ,him and sought to take ,him1 but it was not yet time for ,jesus to die for us all1 so ,he passed from them and went away to the other side of the river ,jordan1 to the place where ,john baptized1 and many believed on ,him there4 ,john the ,baptist was dead1 another cruel ,herod had had his head cut off4 ,it was while ,our ,lord was here that a man was sent to ,him by ,martha and ,mary to say that ,lazarus1 their brother1 whom the ,lord loved1 was ill4 ,the sisters thought ,jesus would be sure to come and make ,his dear friend well4 ,but1 though ,our ,lord loved these good people1 ,he did not go at once4 ,he waited for two days1 and then ,he said to ,his disciples1 ,let us go into ,judea again4 ,but the disciples said1 ,master1 the ,jews of late tried to kill ,you2 why will ,you go there again8 ,then ,jesus said1 ,our friend ,lazarus is asleep2 ,i go that ,i may awake him4 ,they did not know what ,jesus meant1 so they said1 ,if he is asleep he will get well4 ,then ,our ,lord told them that ,lazarus was dead1 and said that ,he must now go to him4 ,the apostle ,thomas said to the others1 ,let us go1 too1 that we may die with ,him4 ,for they thought the ,jews would be sure to kill ,jesus if ,he went near ,jerusalem2 and ,martha and ,mary lived very near it4 ,lazarus had been buried four days when they arrived at ,bethany4 ,as soon as ,martha heard that ,jesus was coming1 she went out to meet him1 and said to ,him1 ,lord1 if ,you had been here my brother would not have died2 but ,i know that even now if ,you ask ,god anything ,he will give it ,you4 ,jesus said1 ,thy brother shall rise again4 ,yes2 ,i know1 said ,martha1 he will rise at the last day4 ,but ,jesus told her that ,he could give life to the dead4 ,then ,he asked for ,mary4 ,she was sitting with a great many friends who had come to comfort her in her grief1 but ,martha made haste to tell her that ,our ,lord was come2 and ,mary went out to the ,lord and said1 as ,martha had1 ,lord1 if ,you had been here he would not have died4 ,then ,jesus said1 ,where have you laid him8 ,the ,jews had also come out now1 and they said1 ,come and see4 ,they were all weeping1 and ,our ,lord had such pity for their grief1 that ,he too shed tears4 ,now the grave was a place in a rock and a stone lay upon it4 ,jesus said1 ,take away the stone4 ,and when they had taken it away1 ,our ,lord said some words to ,god in heaven1 and then ,he cried out with a loud voice1 ,lazarus1 come forth4 ,and the dead man came out alive1 though he had lain four days in the grave4 ,how glad ,mary and ,martha must have been6 ,a great many of the ,jews who were there1 when they saw this wonderful thing1 believed that ,jesus was the ,son of ,god2 but some of them went to the ,pharisees and told them what ,jesus had done4 ,and they were angry1 and said1 ,what shall we do8 for if we let this man alone all will believe in ,him1 and the ,romans will come and take away our place and nation4 ,they meant that the ,romans would take them and sell them for slaves1 as was sometimes done in those days4 ,then the high priest said1 ,one man must die for the people4 ,he did not know how true his words were1 for ,jesus meant to die to save all men4 ,but the ,lord did not let them kill ,him yet1 ,he went to another place with his disciples4 ,illustration3 ,,mary ,,anointing ,,the ,,feet ,,of ,,jesus4 ,however1 as soon as the time of the ,passover drew near1 ,he went up to ,jerusalem1 and then to ,martha's house1 where ,lazarus was2 and ,simon1 who had been a leper1 made a supper for ,him1 and ,martha waited on ,him2 but ,lazarus sat at the table4 ,then ,mary took a pound of very sweet-scented ointment1 that cost a great deal of money1 and she put it on the feet of ,jesus and wiped ,his feet with her hair1 and the scent went all over the house4 ,now ,jesus had one bad man among ,his apostles4 ,his name was ,judas4 ,he kept the bag in which ,our ,lord and the disciples put their money1 and he used to steal from it4 ,he was vexed when he saw ,mary use the sweet ointment2 he could have sold it1 he thought1 and stolen the money if she had given it to ,our ,lord1 and not used it1 so he said1 ,that is a waste1 the ointment could have been sold for a great deal and the money given to the poor4 ,but ,jesus said1 ,let her alone2 the poor you have always with you1 but ,me ye have not always4 ,she has done it for ,my burial4 ,there were a great many ,jews at this feast1 they came to see ,lazarus who was raised from the dead1 as well as ,jesus2 and many of them believed in the ,lord4 ,the priests then thought that they had better kill ,lazarus as well as ,our ,lord1 and that very night ,judas came to them1 and offered to help them take ,jesus if they would pay him for it4 ,and they gave him some silver money for doing it--as much as four of our sovereigns--just as much as people paid for a slave4 ,now the next day1 when the people who had gone up to ,jerusalem for the feast1 heard that ,our ,lord was coming1 they went out to meet ,him1 with branches of palm-trees in their hands1 crying1 ,blessed is the ,king that cometh in the name of the ,lord4 ,jesus had sent for a young ass and was riding on it1 and the people1 to show how they loved him1 and that they would have ,him for their ,king1 spread their garments on the ground for the ass to tread on4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,entry ,,into ,,jerusalem4 ,and when ,our ,lord was come near the city1 and saw it1 ,he wept over it2 ,he was very sorry that it was so wicked1 and ,he knew that ,god would destroy it4 ,they went on into ,jerusalem1 and the people wondered1 and said ,who is this8 ,and the crowd answered1 ,jesus of ,nazareth6 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,children ,,in ,,the ,,temple4 ,then1 ,our ,lord went into the ,temple1 and found there the tables of money and the oxen and sheep as ,he had before1 and ,he drove them out again4 ,the children1 with palms in their hands1 had followed ,him into the ,temple1 and sang1 with their sweet voices ,hosanna 7that is1 praise7 to the ,son of ,david2 and when the priests heard them they were angry1 and said1 ,do ,you hear what these children say8 ,and ,our ,lord said1 ,yes2 have you never heard that out of the mouth of babes and little infants ,god has perfect praise8 ,then ,jesus left them and went back to ,martha's house1 where ,he slept4 ,for five days more1 ,our ,lord came every morning to ,jerusalem1 and went back in the evening to the house of ,lazarus to sleep4 ,and ,he taught ,his apostles many things1 and talked with the ,pharisees and priests in the ,temple4 ,one day1 when ,his disciples showed ,him what a grand place the ,temple was1 ,he told them that not one stone would be left on another4 ,and ,he said that one day ,he would come again to judge the world4 ,one day1 ,he saw a very poor woman--she was a widow--drop two mites--that is1 less than a farthing--into the box that was placed for men to give money to the ,temple4 ,and ,jesus said to ,his disciples1 ,this poor widow has cast in more than they all1 for the rich men could spare all they gave1 but she has given to ,god all the living she had4 ,you see1 ,god does not mind how small the gift is that we offer to ,him1 if it is all we can do2 ,he loves the gift of the poor4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,widow',s ,,mite4 ,one day some of the wicked people who wanted to find fault with ,him1 came and asked ,our ,lord if it was right to pay the tax to the ,romans4 ,jesus said1 ,show me a penny2 and when they brought it ,he said1 ,whose likeness is on it and what name8 ,they said1 ,csar's4 ,then said ,jesus1 ,give to ,csar the things that are ,csar's1 and to ,god the things that are ,god's4 ,it was of no use to teach these men2 they would not believe though they heard how wisely ,jesus spoke and saw the wonderful works ,he did4 ,some of the chief rulers believed on ,him1 but they were afraid of the ,pharisees and would not say that they did2 for the ,bible tells us they loved the praise of men more than the praise of ,god4 ,it was on one of the first days of this week1 that some ,greeks came to the ,apostle ,philip and said1 ,sir1 we wish to see ,jesus4 ,philip told ,andrew1 and they went together to tell ,our ,lord4 ,jesus said that the hour was come that ,he should be glorified1 and ,he spoke to the ,greeks1 and told them that if any man served ,him1 ,god would honour him2 and ended ,his words by saying1 ,father1 glorify ,thy ,name1 and there came a voice from heaven1 saying1 ,i have both glorified it and will glorify it again4 ,some of the people who stood by said that it thundered2 but others--perhaps the ,greeks1 who were nearer--said that an angel spoke to ,him4 ,our ,lord told them that the voice came not for ,him but for their sakes4 ,it was meant to make them believe in ,jesus1 and these good ,greeks must have gone away sure now that ,he was indeed the expected ,christ4 ,now1 ,our ,lord had told the apostles to get ,him a room in which ,he would eat the ,passover with them1 and1 when they were there1 ,our ,lord took a towel and poured some water into a basin and began to wash ,his disciples' feet1 and wipe them with the towel4 ,but1 when ,he came to ,peter1 ,peter said1 ,lord1 ,thou shalt not wash my feet4 ,he thought it was not fit that ,our ,lord should do as a servant would4 ,but ,jesus said1 ,if ,i do not wash you1 you have no part in ,me4 ,then ,peter let ,him do it4 ,why did ,our ,lord wash ,his apostles' feet8 ,to show us that we must not be too proud to do anything for one another4 ,then ,our ,lord sat down to supper1 and ,he was troubled1 and said1 ,one of you will give ,me up to the priests4 ,and the disciples looked at one another and wondered which of them would be so wicked4 ,peter made signs to ,john1 who was close to ,our ,lord1 to ask ,him2 and ,john did4 ,and ,jesus said1 ,the one to whom ,i shall give a sop when ,i have dipped it4 ,and ,he dipped a piece of bread in some sauce and gave it to ,judas1 and said to him1 ,what you are going to do1 do quickly4 ,then1 ,judas1 who knew what ,our ,lord meant1 went out2 but the others did not know2 they thought ,our ,lord sent him to give something to the poor4 ,we shall not tell you all ,our ,lord did and said at this ,last ,supper2 it would be too hard for you to understand2 but we will tell you that ,he grew sad and told ,his apostles that they would all leave ,him that night4 ,peter said1 ,lord1 ,i will go with ,thee to prison or to death4 ,our ,lord answered1 ,i tell you1 ,peter1 before the cock crows you will three times say you do not know ,me4 ,when the supper was ended and they had sung a hymn1 they went out to the ,mount of ,olives2 and on the way the ,lord talked to them1 and told them to love one another4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,garden ,,of ,,gethsemane4 ,now1 on that ,mount1 there was a garden called ,gethsemane2 ,our ,lord went into it1 and with ,him ,he took ,peter and ,james and ,john1 and told them to watch while ,he prayed4 ,they were tired1 and only kept awake a little while2 but they heard ,our ,lord pray4 ,he was very sorrowful1 for ,he knew ,he must die1 and ,he was sad because men were so wicked2 but ,he said to ,god1 ,not ,my will1 but ,thine be done2 and ,his ,father sent an angel from ,heaven to comfort ,him4 ,twice ,jesus went to ,his apostles and found them asleep4 ,it must have seemed very unkind of them2 but ,our ,lord was not angry4 ,he said they could not help it1 they were so tired4 ,but the third time ,he came to them ,he told them to rise1 for ,judas was coming with the priests to take ,him4 ,and just then the priests came with soldiers and lamps1 for it was night1 and ,judas was with them4 ,he said1 ,i will show you which is ,jesus2 ,i will kiss ,him4 ,so he went up to ,our ,lord1 and said1 ,hail1 ,master1 and kissed ,him4 ,jesus said1 ,judas1 betrayest thou the ,son of ,man with a kiss4 ,then ,he said to the soldiers1 ,whom seek ye8 ,they said1 ,jesus of ,nazareth4 ,our ,lord said1 ,i am ,he1 and they fell on their faces before ,him2 they felt how great ,he was4 ,but they soon got up1 and when ,our ,lord said again1 ,whom seek ye8 and they answered1 ,jesus1 ,he said1 ,i am ,he2 but let ,my disciples go4 ,now ,peter had a sword1 and he was so angry that he drew it and cut off the ear of one of the high priest's servants4 ,but ,our ,lord told him to put up his sword1 and touched the ear of the wounded man and made it well at once4 ,was not ,jesus good and kind to heal the man who came to take ,him8 ,then all ,his disciples forsook ,him and fled2 and the soldiers led ,him to the ,high ,priest's house1 where all the wicked priests and scribes were sitting up waiting for ,him4 ,john and ,peter were soon sorry that they had left ,our ,lord1 and went after ,jesus4 ,john had a friend in the ,high ,priest's house who let him go in2 and then ,john went and brought ,peter in4 ,the priests were very cruel to ,our ,lord2 they told falsehoods about ,him4 ,but when they asked ,him if ,he was the ,christ1 and ,he said1 ,i am1 and you will see ,me one day sitting on the right hand of ,god1 and coming in the clouds with the ,holy ,angels1 they were so angry that they tore their clothes1 and said1 ,he ought to die4 ,and then they began to ill-treat ,our ,lord1 and threw a cloth over ,his face and beat ,him with the palms of their hands1 and said1 ,tell us who struck ,you6 ,illustration3 ,,this ,,fellow ,,was ,,with ,,jesus4 ,now ,peter sat in the part of the great hall that was lower down than that where ,our ,lord was1 and he warmed himself by the fire2 and a maid came up1 and said to him1 ,you are one of the men who were with ,jesus2 but he said1 ,i do not know ,him4 ,then another servant said to him1 ,you are one of ,his disciples2 but ,peter said1 ,man1 ,i am not4 ,an hour went by1 and then another said1 ,this fellow was with ,jesus4 ,and ,peter said he was not1 and began to use bad words4 ,just then the cock crowed2 and ,our ,lord turned and looked at ,peter4 ,it must have been such a sad look6 and it reminded him of what ,our ,lord had said1 ,before the cock crow thou shalt deny ,me three times4 ,and he was so much ashamed and so very sorry that he went out and wept bitterly4 ,now1 when ,judas saw that ,our ,lord would be put to death1 he repented1 and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests1 and said1 ,i have sinned1 for ,i have given up to you an innocent man4 ,the wicked priests answered1 ,what is that to us8 ,see thou to that4 ,and ,judas cast down the pieces of silver and went and hanged himself4 ,very bad men sometimes cannot bear to live1 when they feel how wicked they have been2 but it only adds to their sins to kill themselves2 for ,god has said men may not do so4 ,when daylight came1 the great crowd of the priests and scribes and their friends led ,our ,lord from the ,high ,priest's house to that of ,pilate1 the ,roman governor1 to have ,him judged2 for the ,romans did not allow the ,jews to put any one to death4 ,pilate was in his hall where he judged people4 ,he came out and asked1 ,what has this ,man done8 ,he teaches men wrong1 said they2 ,he tells them not to pay the tax to ,csar1 and says that ,he is ,christ1 a ,king4 ,then1 ,pilate went back to the judgment hall and had ,christ brought before him1 and said1 ,are ,you a ,king8 ,our ,lord told him that ,he was2 but not a king of this world2 ,his ,kingdom was a heavenly one4 ,then ,pilate went out to the people1 and said1 ,i find no fault in this man4 ,but they were more angry1 and cried1 ,he teaches the people wrongly1 from ,galilee to this place4 ,when ,pilate found that ,jesus came from ,galilee1 he sent ,him to ,herod to be judged1 for ,herod was ruler over that part of the land4 ,and when ,herod saw ,our ,lord1 he was glad1 for he hoped to see some miracle done by ,him2 and he questioned ,jesus with many words2 but the ,lord would not even speak to the cruel man who had killed ,john the ,baptist4 ,then ,herod grew angry1 and he and his soldiers mocked the ,lord1 and put on ,him a purple robe such as kings wear1 and sent ,him back to ,pilate4 ,the priests and scribes then said all manner of false things about ,jesus2 but ,he did not speak or answer at all4 ,then ,pilate's wife sent to tell him not to have anything to do with that just man1 as she had had a terrible dream about ,him4 ,and again ,pilate tried to save ,him4 ,the ,romans set free any prisoner that the ,jews asked for at the ,passover2 so ,pilate said to them1 ,i will have ,jesus beaten and then set ,him free4 ,but the priests told the people to say1 ,no2 set ,barabbas free4 ,now1 ,barabbas was a robber4 ,then ,pilate said1 ,what1 then1 shall ,i do with ,jesus who is called ,christ8 and they said1 ,crucify ,him6--that is1 ,nail ,him to a cross4 ,but ,pilate still tried to save ,jesus2 he told his soldiers to beat ,our ,lord with great knotted ropes2 and then the men made a crown of sharp thorns and pressed it on ,his head1 so that the blood ran down2 and they put a reed in ,his hand1 and the purple robe on again1 and cried1 ,hail1 ,king of the ,jews6 and kneeled down to ,him1 mocking ,him4 ,pilate1 thinking that the cruel ,jews would be quiet and let ,him go if they saw ,him thus1 took ,him out1 and said to them1 ,behold the ,man6 ,but they only cried more and more1 ,crucify ,him6 ,pilate said1 ,take ye ,him and crucify ,him1 for ,i find no fault in ,him4 ,they answered1 ,we have a law1 and by our law ,he ought to die1 because ,he says ,he is the ,son of ,god4 ,when ,pilate heard that1 he was much afraid2 he took ,our ,lord back into the hall1 and asked ,him1 ,whence do you come8 ,but ,jesus did not answer him4 ,pilate said1 ,why do you not answer me8 ,do you not know that ,i can crucify you1 or let you go free8 ,but ,jesus said that ,pilate's power was given from above1 and that the ,jews had the greater sin4 ,then ,pilate tried very hard to save the ,lord1 but the ,jews cried out again1 ,if you let this ,man go1 you are not ,csar's friend4 ,illustration3 ,i ,,am ,,innocent ,,of ,,the ,,blood ,,of ,,this ,,just ,,man4 ,and ,pilate was much afraid of ,csar1 who was a cruel man4 ,then the ,jews began to make a great disturbance2 but ,pilate took water1 and washed his hands before them1 and said1 ,i am innocent of the blood of this just ,man2 see ye to it4 ,was this true8 ,no4 ,pilate ought to have rather died himself than let a good man be killed4 ,but fear often makes men wicked4 ,be ashamed to be a coward4 ,then the soldiers took the robe off ,christ1 and put ,his own clothes on ,him1 and led ,him away to crucify ,him4 ,at first they made ,him carry the great cross on which ,he was to be nailed2 but ,he fainted under the weight and fell1 and then they made a man they met carry it for ,him4 ,they nailed the dear ,lord's hands and feet to the cross2 but first they wanted ,him to drink some wine and myrrh that ,he might not feel the pain so much1 but ,he would not drink it4 ,now1 the mother of ,jesus stood by the cross with his favourite apostle1 ,john4 ,how sad it was for her to see her dear ,son in such pain6 ,but ,jesus still thought of her4 ,he looked at ,john1 and said1 ,woman1 behold thy son2 and to ,john ,he said1 ,behold thy mother2 and from that hour ,john was a good son to the mother of his ,lord4 ,then ,our ,lord prayed to ,god for the cruel ,jews4 ,he said1 ,father1 forgive them1 for they do not know what they do--that is1 they did not know that ,he was ,god's ,son4 ,there were two thieves crucified with ,christ1 one on each side4 ,one of them was wicked2 the other was sorry for his sin1 and asked ,jesus to forgive him4 ,the ,lord told him1 ,to-day you shall be with ,me in ,paradise--the happy place1 you know4 ,then a great darkness came on like night1 and there was a hush--the cruel ,jews had been mocking ,our ,lord2 now1 they were frightened4 ,the darkness lasted for three hours2 then light came back4 ,our ,lord said1 ,i thirst4 ,and the soldiers dipped a sponge in vinegar1 and put it on a reed and held it to ,his lips4 ,when ,he had tasted it1 ,he said1 ,it is finished6 and bowed ,his head and died4 ,then the earth and the city shook1 and the ,roman ,captain1 close by1 said1 ,this ,man really was the ,son of ,god4 ,the ,jews asked ,pilate to take ,our ,lord and the others down from the crosses1 because the next day was their ,sabbath4 ,so he sent to see if they were dead4 ,jesus was1 but1 to make sure1 one of the soldiers stabbed ,his side with a spear4 ,the thieves were not dead2 so their legs were broken1 that when taken down they might not get away1 and die sooner4 ,then a rich man1 named ,joseph1 begged ,pilate to let him bury ,our ,lord1 and ,pilate said he might4 ,so ,joseph1 and ,nicodemus1 who came to ,jesus by night1 wrapped ,him in white linen and put ,him in a grave that ,joseph had made for himself in a garden1 and a great stone was put for a door to it4 ,the ,jews begged ,pilate to set a guard upon the tomb for fear the disciples should take the ,lord away2 for they remembered that ,he had said ,he would rise again4 ,so ,pilate sent a great many soldiers to watch4 ,but at day-dawn an angel of the ,lord came down from ,heaven3 his face was bright as the lightning1 and his robe as white as snow2 and the earth shook very much as he came down4 ,he rolled away the stone that shut the tomb1 and sat on it4 ,the guards were nearly dead with fear1 and made haste away4 ,now1 the women who loved the ,lord were coming to put sweet spices on ,him1 even while it was dark4 ,but when they came1 they saw that the stone was rolled away1 and that the grave was empty2 so ,mary ,magdalene ran off at once to tell ,peter and ,john of it4 ,the other women went and looked into the tomb1 and there they saw two bright angels1 and they were afraid4 ,but the angels said1 ,do not be afraid4 ,we know you are looking for ,jesus2 ,he is not here2 ,he is risen4 ,go and tell ,peter and the disciples that ,he is risen4 ,and they made haste to take the message4 ,and while they were going1 some of the watch came into the city and told the chief priests all that had been done2 how an angel had come down and rolled away the stone from the tomb4 ,the priests were afraid1 and called the elders together to ask their advice2 it was that they should give a great deal of money to the soldiers and tell them to say that the disciples came in the night1 and stole ,our ,lord's body away while they were asleep1 and this wicked thing they did4 ,they paid the ,roman soldiers to tell a falsehood1 and said that they would take care that ,pilate should not punish them for sleeping on their watch2 for which they might be put to death4 ,illustration3 ,,peter ,,and ,,john ,,at ,,the ,,grave ,,of ,,our ,,lord4 ,then ,peter and ,john came with ,mary ,magdalene1 and looked into the tomb1 but it was empty--only the linen lay folded up on one spot4 ,they were very much surprised1 but by-and-by they went home4 ,mary did not2 she stood crying by the tomb4 ,then she looked into the grave1 and she also saw the two angels4 ,they said to her1 ,why do you weep8 ,she said1 ,because they have taken away my ,lord1 and ,i do not know where they have laid ,him4 ,she turned back as she spoke1 and ,jesus stood close by her1 but she did not know ,him4 ,he said1 ,why do you weep8 ,mary was crying so much she could not see ,his face1 and she thought ,he was the gardener1 so she said1 ,sir1 if you have taken my ,lord away1 tell me where you have laid ,him1 and ,i will take ,him away4 ,jesus said1 ,mary6 ,when she heard ,his voice and her name1 she knew who ,he was1 and kneeled down to ,him4 ,he told her to go and tell ,his brothers--the disciples--that ,he had come out of the grave and would soon go up to ,heaven4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,and ,,mary ,,magdalene4 ,then the ,lord ,jesus went and spoke to ,peter1 because the kind ,saviour knew how sad he was4 ,illustration3 ,,peace ,,be ,,to ,,you4 ,two disciples that day were walking to a place eight miles from ,jerusalem4 ,they were very sad1 talking about ,our ,lord1 when ,he came up and walked with them2 but ,he did not let them know who ,he was4 ,he asked them why they were sad1 and they told ,him it was because ,jesus was dead4 ,then ,he made them understand that ,jesus died that they might go to ,heaven1 and they were quite glad of what ,he said4 ,they begged ,him to go in with them to supper1 and ,he went in2 and when ,he took bread and blessed it they knew ,him at once4 ,but ,he passed away1 they could not tell how1 so they made haste to go back to ,jerusalem to tell the ,apostles4 ,they found them all1 except ,thomas1 in one room1 with the doors shut1 but before they could tell their tale1 the men said1 ,our ,lord has risen from the dead1 and has been seen by ,peter4 ,then the two told how ,he had walked with them2 and while they spoke ,jesus stood in the midst of them1 and said1 ,peace be to you2 and ,he showed them the holes of the nails in ,his hands and feet4 ,then they knew that it was the ,lord4 ,they told ,thomas of it1 but he was so sad he could not believe them4 ,you must make a mistake1 he said2 ,i will not believe ,our ,lord is alive again unless ,i can put my hand in ,his side1 where the spear went in1 and my fingers in the holes of the nails4 ,illustration3 ,,our ,,lord ,,appearing ,,to ,,thomas4 ,the next first day of the week--,sunday--they were all in the room1 ,thomas too1 when ,our ,lord came into the midst of them1 and said to ,thomas1 ,put out your hand and feel my side1 and put your fingers in the nail-holes4 ,then ,thomas kneeled down and said1 ,my ,lord and my ,god4 ,jesus said1 ,thomas1 because you have seen ,me you believe2 blessed are they who have not seen1 and yet have believed4 ,our ,lord stayed forty days on earth1 and often came and talked to ,his disciples2 once ,he came to five hundred all in one place4 ,but some of the apostles went back to their boats4 ,there were together ,peter1 ,james and ,john1 ,thomas1 ,nathanael1 and two other disciples4 ,they went out to fish2 but all night they did not catch one1 and when day broke ,jesus stood on the shore4 ,they did not know ,him1 and ,he asked if they had any fish4 ,they said1 ,no2 and then ,he told them to cast their net on the right side of the ship4 ,they did so1 and now the net nearly broke with the weight of the fish4 ,then ,john said1 ,it is the ,lord1 and ,peter at once swam ashore to ,jesus4 ,the others came in the boat dragging the net full of fish4 ,and when they came to the shore they saw a fire of coals and fish laid on it1 and bread4 ,and ,jesus told them to bring some of their own fish2 there were a hundred and fifty great ones in the net1 but it did not break4 ,then ,jesus said1 ,come and dine2 and ,he gave them fish and bread4 ,when they had dined1 the ,lord said to ,peter1 ,do you love ,me more than these8 ,peter said1 ,yes1 ,lord2 ,you know that ,i love ,you4 ,then ,christ said1 ,feed ,my lambs4 ,again ,he asked ,peter1 ,do you love ,me8 ,yes1 ,lord1 said ,peter4 ,then said ,jesus1 ,feed ,my sheep4 ,a third time ,he asked ,peter1 ,do you love ,me8 ,peter was grieved because ,jesus asked him three times2 he thought ,our ,lord remembered that he had three times said he did not know ,him1 and he said1 ,lord1 ,you know all things2 ,you know that ,i love ,you4 ,then ,jesus said1 ,feed ,my sheep4 ,who are ,christ's lambs8 ,little children1 whom ,jesus loves2 to feed the sheep and lambs means to teach them4 ,illustration3 ,,our ,,lord ,,appearing ,,to ,,the ,,disciples4 ,then ,jesus said to ,peter1 ,when you were young you walked where you would2 but when you are old you shall stretch forth your hands1 and another shall gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go4 ,jesus thus foretold ,peter's death2 who1 when old1 was crucified4 ,peter asked ,our ,lord what ,john would do--you remember that ,john and ,peter were great friends--and ,jesus gently reproved him for asking1 by saying1 ,if ,i will that he tarry till ,i come1 what is that to thee8 ,our ,lord also told ,his disciples to go all over the world and tell people about ,him1 and baptize them2 and then ,he took them out to the ,mount of ,olives1 and1 while ,he was blessing them1 ,he was taken up1 and a cloud hid ,him from their sight2 but they stood a long time looking up after their ,lord1 till two angels came to them1 and said1 ,why do you stand looking up into ,heaven8 ,this same ,jesus who is taken up from you into ,heaven will come again in the same way as you have seen ,him go up4 ,then the disciples were very glad1 and they went back to ,jerusalem4 ,has not the story of ,our dear ,lord made you love ,him8 ,we hope so2 and if you love ,him you will be a good child to please ,him1 for ,he sees you now from where ,he sits at ,god's right hand1 whence ,he will come by-and-by and--if you obey ,him--will take you to live with ,him in ,heaven4 ,illustration ,,printed ,,by ,,ballantyne1 ,,hanson ,,and ,,co4 ,,london ,,and ,,edinburgh4 ,,footnote3 ,a ,new ,version1 ,st4 ,matt4 xix1 #ag4
