,,what ,,is ,,christian ,,science8 ,by ,m4 ,m ,mangasarian ,london3 ,,watts ,,co41 #aibb ,in this brochure the author makes an earnest endeavour to understand ,christian ,science and define its mission4 ,he scrupulously verifies all his citations and references1 and appeals to the judgment of those who are willing to hear both sides of the question4 ,the blood1 heart1 lungs1 brain1 have nothing to do with life4 ,the daily ablutions of an infant are no more natural than taking a fish out of water and covering it with dirt would be natural4 ,christian ,science is more safe and potent than any other sanitary method4 ,the condition of food1 stomach1 bowels1 clothing1 etc41 is of no serious import to your child4 ,gender is also a quality or characteristic of mind1 not of matter4 ,until it is learned that generation 7birth7 rests on no sexual basis1 let marriage continue4 ,to abolish marriage and maintain generation is possible in 7,christian7 science4 ,what is ,christian ,science8 ,you do not understand ,christian ,science is the usual reply of the followers of ,mrs4 ,eddy to any one disputing their claims1 or trying to point out the many inconsistencies in their creed4 ,if it is impossible to understand ,christian ,science1 how does it expect to propagate itself8 ,to answer that one must accept the doctrine before one can understand it would be like asking a man to see before he opens his eyes1 or to think after he has made up his mind4 ,it is just as useless to try to understand ,christian ,science after it has been accepted as true as it would be for a judge to examine the evidence after a verdict has been pronounced4 ,and if ,christian ,scientists can understand the beliefs which they reject1 why may not other people have intelligence and honesty enough to understand ,christian ,science without believing in it8 ,but can a person who is not a mathematician understand or discuss profitably the intricate problems of mathematics8 ,no2 hence no one but a ,christian ,scientist may discuss its doctrines and interpret its metaphysics4 ,neither has that defence any value4 ,we do not have to be expert mathematicians to know that twice two make four4 ,it is possible to detect an error in an example of addition1 multiplication1 or subtraction presented by the greatest mathematician without possessing equal knowledge or ability4 ,mrs4 ,eddy may be more advanced in metaphysics than any of her critics1 but twice two make four in ,divine science as well as in human science4 ,square your statements with the facts1 and you disarm criticism4 ,ignore1 suppress1 or tamper with the facts1 and you will have the universe against you4 ,why ,i ,discuss ,christian ,science ,if asked why ,i devote time and labour to the discussion of such seemingly foolish propositions as those propounded by ,mrs4 ,eddy1 my defence is that ,i am very much interested in the people who accept ,christian ,science1 and would like to be of service to them1 even though they may hold me and my motives in derision4 ,then1 again1 ,i feel that if we stand idly by while the ,christian ,scientists are concentrating all their efforts1 sparing neither time nor money to spread their doctrine1 we may wake up some morning to find that all our institutions--newspapers1 courts1 schools1 etc4--have passed under the control of ,mrs4 ,eddy's followers4 ,that1 in my opinion1 would be a national menace4 ,if the teachings of ,christian ,science prevail1 there will come into prominence the type of mentality which will dispense with all forms of inquiry1 and accept for authority the say-so of a book1 a man1 or a woman as all-sufficient and final4 ,the passive mind easily becomes the plaything or instrument of every kind of imposture--political1 economic1 or religious4 ,non-resistance will prove the death of free institutions4 ,i am opposed to ,christian ,science because ,i am opposed to the least departure from sanity4 ,i have no other motive in this propaganda against the new cult4 ,whatever undermines the morale of the nation or is hurtful to the free and rational development of humanity should be combated again and again until it ceases to be a menace4 ,mrs4 ,eddy's ,mentality ,the founder of ,christian ,science was1 indeed1 one of the busiest women of her day4 ,she was preacher1 writer1 teacher1 missionary1 organizer1 manager1 etc4 ,but even a superficial reading of her books will show that her activity resembled that of children at play rather than of men at work4 ,mrs4 ,eddy's mind displayed all the qualities and defects of primitive man4 ,though incessantly active1 she followed in all her mental efforts the line of least resistance4 ,children are never at rest of their own will2 they run and romp almost continually2 but it is the activity of play1 not of work1 which they enjoy4 ,to work requires concentration and effort in a definite direction1 and submission to rules and regulations2 while in play one is at liberty to follow one's own fancy1 moving in any direction and at any speed one pleases4 ,again1 the worker is expected to show results2 the player1 on the other hand1 though equally busy1 keeps going round and round1 or back and forth1 just for the pleasure of being in motion4 ,mrs4 ,eddy had the child's fondness for activity and the child's dislike for work4 ,she rebelled against discipline4 ,rules and restrictions were as distasteful to her as to children who have been allowed to grow up without discipline1 while logic and reason meant no more to her than they would to primitive man4 ,science and ,health is a book consisting largely of extraordinary claims put forth with the most provoking indifference to the universally accepted rules of evidence1 and with an abandon suggesting that of the steed who has thrown his rider4 ,if her readers ask for proofs1 she points to the authority of her name4 ,has she not received a revelation8 ,is she not the ,comforter whom ,jesus promised to send into the world8 ,and if there are obscure passages in her writings1 it is not because these are really dark1 but because there is not enough light in the eyes of the readers of her books4 ,this free-and-easy method carries her through seven hundred pages of her masterpiece1 ,science and ,health1 without encountering the least obstacle or being checked for an instant by a single difficulty4 ,writing was like play to her1 and sentences and phrases flow copiously and swell into a veritable flood in her pages1 because what satisfied her was that she could say so much1 and not whether what she said had any basis in fact4 ,in the ,preface to ,science and ,health1 ,mrs4 ,eddy1 in order to prove the usefulness of medical knowledge1 quotes the example of the antediluvians who knew nothing of drugs1 and yet some of whom lived to be nearly a thousand years old4 ,mrs4 ,eddy makes this statement with as little concern as a boy tosses a ball4 ,the reasoning that men were healthier and lived longer before the ,deluge because there were then no physicians1 whose presence in our times has shortened human life1 may do for the child-mind1 but is it permitted to a full-grown person to make such careless use of his or her faculties8 ,how does ,mrs4 ,eddy know that the antediluvians would not have lived longer if they could also have had the services of trained and skilful physicians8 ,it would be just as reasonable to assert that there would have been no ,deluge had there been doctors to prevent it1 as to say that the antediluvians owed their longevity to the lack of them4 ,without caring to make sure of her data1 or to look into the truth of the statement that there was a flood1 or that before this terrible downpour men lived to be a thousand years old1 ,mrs4 ,eddy accepts the rumour of the tradition as if it were a demonstrated fact1 and proves by it1 to her own satisfaction at least1 the utter uselessness and positive menace to the human race of medical science4 ,what an argument and what a conclusion6 ,i am not accusing ,mrs4 ,eddy of insincerity1 but of mental indolence4 ,nothing1 for example1 but a distaste for work could account for her failure to verify her references in the following instances1 or to supply to her readers the means of verifying them for themselves4 ,she had to choose between making assertions and offering proofs1 and she chose the easier of the two4 ,i have healed ,infidels 7p4 #cei74 99 ,what were their names8 ,where did they live8 ,of what maladies were they healed8 ,one whom ,i rescued from seeming spiritual oblivion in which the senses had engulphed him 7p4 #chb74 ,and what sort of a disease is that1 and who was the person suffering from it8 ,a little girl who had badly wounded her finger 7p4 #bhg72 ,a woman whom ,i cured of consumption 7p4 #ahd72 ,a famous naturalist says 7p4 #edh72 ,one of our ablest naturalists has said 7p4 #eec72 ,it is related that a father 7p4 #eef71 etc41 etc4 ,all these stories and illustrations fail completely to impress the inquiring reader1 for the simple reason that ,mrs4 ,eddy did not take the trouble to furnish the details to render her testimony admissible4 ,in no court would such statements as ,i heard a man say1 or ,i knew some one who heard a man say1 or ,it has been said by so and so1 be accepted as evidence4 ,very likely ,mrs4 ,eddy possessed the data1 names1 addresses1 etc41 of the patients and the naturalists she writes about1 but she was too indolent to reach for her note-book1 if she kept one4 ,again1 only mental fatigue or sheer indolence can explain a statement like the following1 from which all the important items which alone could give it force and effectiveness are left out3-- 99 ,the quotations1 unless otherwise specified1 are from ,mrs4 ,eddy's ,science and ,health1 with ,key to the ,scriptures4 ,i have seen age regain two of the elements it had lost--sight and teeth4 ,a woman of eighty-five whom ,i knew had a return of sight4 ,another woman of ninety had new teeth1 incisors1 cuspids1 bicuspids1 and one molar4 ,one man at sixty had retained his full set of upper and lower teeth without a decaying cavity 7p4 #bdg74 ,evidently these cases are cited to carry conviction with the reader of her book2 would it not1 then1 have greatly enhanced their evidential value had she made it possible for her readers to verify their claims8 ,but how can they do so when no names or addresses are given6 ,if ,christian ,science does not need demonstration1 why cite these cases of remarkable cures at all2 if it needs demonstration1 why not supply the details necessary to complete the demonstration8 ,i knew a person1 writes again ,mrs4 ,eddy1 who when a child adopted the ,graham system to cure dyspepsia 7p4 #bba72 and then she proceeds to relate how this led him to death's door and he was ready to die1 having exhausted the skill of the doctors1 who kindly informed him that death was indeed his only alternative1 and how ,christian ,science saved him1 and he is now in perfect health without a vestige of the old complaint 7p4 #bba74 ,surely this fortunate person would have no objection to have his name announced and his case investigated4 ,why1 then1 suppress-his identity8 ,printed in italics at the foot of page xii of ,science and ,health will be found the following notice or advertisement3--,the author 7,mrs4 ,eddy7 takes no patients1 and declines medical consultation4 ,the above offers an excellent illustration of the distinction between work and play4 ,mrs4 ,eddy1 with the mentality she possessed1 found it easier to compose phrases and make vague statements about past cures than actually to grapple with patients or to take part in medical consultation1 whatever that may mean in ,christian ,science4 ,after repeatedly asserting that the only way to demonstrate the truth of her science is by healing the sick1 she herself positively declines to give this demonstration4 ,it is really puzzling4 ,here is a woman who had discovered the only power that can heal the sick as nothing else can1 and no other person understands the modus operandi of this power better or even as well as she does1 and yet she will take no patients--that is1 she will under no circumstances apply her remedy1 however urgent the need for it may be6 ,some people might be led to think that ,mrs4 ,eddy's refusal to practise healing was due to her fear that she might not always succeed1 which would greatly diminish her prestige and prejudice the public against her discovery4 ,to claim1 as we have explained elsewhere1 that ,mrs4 ,eddy's motive in refusing to heal the sick herself was that she might have more time and strength for matters of higher importance would imply that she was not strong enough to do both4 ,but would not such an admission prove fatal to the claim that all is divine ,mind1 and that in divine ,mind there is no sin1 sickness1 fatigue1 or limitation of any kind8 ,the husband of ,mrs4 ,eddy died2 that was an event calling for an explanation from the discoverer of an unfailing remedy for all maladies who happened to be the widow of the deceased4 ,how could any one so closely related to ,mrs4 ,eddy1 and taking her treatment1 succumb to sickness of any kind8 ,mrs4 ,eddy looked about for an answer to that question4 ,my husband died from the effects of arsenical poisoning mentally administered was her first effort at self-defence4 ,but ,mrs4 ,eddy was quick to realize that she could ill afford to admit that an imaginary dose of arsenic mentally administered could deprive a ,christian ,scientist of his life1 for she hastened to explain further that unfortunately circumstances debarred me from taking hold of my husband's case4 ,circumstances1 then1 killed her husband1 since had she not been debarred by them she would have come to his rescue with her divine science and prevented his death4 ,to further exonerate and defend herself she is inclined to blame her husband a little4 ,my husband declared himself perfectly capable of carrying himself through1 and ,i was so entirely absorbed in business that ,i permitted him to try1 and when ,i awakened to the danger it was too late4 ,now we know why ,christian ,science failed in this particular case4 ,mrs4 ,eddy was too busy1 and she awoke to the seriousness of her husband's condition too late4 ,besides1 the patient himself believed he was quite able to cope with the trouble without his wife's help4 ,in short1 circumstances proved too much for ,christian ,science4 ,that is why ,mrs4 ,eddy's husband died4 ,the more ,mrs4 ,eddy explained1 the more she had to explain4 ,if ,mr4 ,eddy was murdered by means of mesmeric poison 7whatever that may be71 mentally administered by an absent practitioner who1 ,mrs4 ,eddy believed1 was one of her own apostate disciples--that is1 if some one could from a distance kill her husband--what prevented her1 by the same absent treatment1 and without taking any time from her other duties1 from defeating the work of the mal-practitioner by a thought or two of her own8 ,if this could not be done1 and since there is a possibility of other divine healers being so entirely absorbed in business as to neglect their patients1 had we not better hold on to the doctors a little longer1 at least until ,christian ,science has become a match for circumstances1 etc48 ,and if a healer equipped with divine science can have more to do than he or she has the strength to attend to1 in what sense is divine science more resourceful than plain1 ordinary science8 ,but there is more to come4 ,mrs4 ,eddy declares that one of her rejected students tried to kill her in the same way as her husband had been killed4 ,but he could not1 because ,i instantly gave myself the same treatment that ,i would give in a case of arsenical poisoning 7mentally administered71 and so ,i recovered1 just the same as ,i could have caused my husband to recover had ,i taken the case in time4 ,there is no such thing as failure with ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,her husband would never have died had she given him the same treatment as she gave herself4 ,of course1 years later ,mrs4 ,eddy died too2 but there1 again1 circumstances must have proved too formidable for ,christian ,science1 otherwise both the ,eddys might be living still4 ,the founder of this popular cult believed that she had now explained the death of her husband to the satisfaction of her faithful flock4 ,she certainly could have saved ,mr4 ,eddy's life had she not been too busy with other matters1 or too late in taking hold of his case4 ,to prove this she goes on to give examples of her wonderful powers1 as will be seen by the following3 ,only a few days ago ,i disposed of a tumour in twenty-four hours that the doctors had said must be removed by the knife4 ,i changed the course of the mind to counteract the effect of the disease2 and of course the malignant tumour took wings and flew away1 twenty-four hours of ,christian ,science being all it could stand4 ,it was really unfortunate that so powerful a healer was prevented by pressure of business from lending a thought to her sick husband4 ,it was not because she did not want to help him1 nor because her divine science was not equal to his trouble1 but because of circumstances4 ,we hope that in the near future some advanced practitioner of ,christian ,science will discover a cure for that terrible malady called circumstances1 which reduced ,mrs4 ,eddy to impotency at the bedside of a dying husband2 a cure which will be as effective against circumstances as against tumours1 cancer1 etc4 ,in comparison with such sophistry or make-believe1 how refreshing is the intellectual honesty which sees true and aims straight4 ,mortal ,mind ,mrs4 ,eddy's efforts to explain what she calls mortal mind give us an even better insight into her mentality4 ,though constantly denouncing mortal mind as the source of all human ills1 the author of ,christian ,science makes no serious attempt to account for its origin4 ,the fundamentals of ,christian ,science as expounded by its author are summed up in the following statements3-- ,god is ,all in ,all4 ,god is ,good1 ,god is ,mind4 ,god ,spirit1 being all1 nothing is matter4 ,life1 ,god1 omnipotent good deny death1 evil1 sin1 disease 7p4 #aac74 ,the important deduction which the founder of ,christian ,science draws from these assertions is that sin1 suffering1 sickness1 and death do not exist1 since there is no room for them in ,god1 who is ,all in ,all1 or in a universe where ,mind is the sole reality and ,nothing is matter4 ,our experience and our senses may testify to the contrary1 but1 replies ,mrs4 ,eddy1 ,i find that ,god is true1 and every 7mortal7 man a liar 7p4 #aac74 ,in the opinion of ,christian ,scientists1 that ought to end the discussion4 ,god is true1 never mind what men may say4 ,but what is the proof that ,mrs4 ,eddy is speaking for the ,deity8 ,calvin and ,mohammed too claimed to speak for the ,deity4 ,if ,god is the ,all1 whence comes mortal mind8 ,the ,all plus mortal mind would give us more than the ,all4 ,god cannot be the all unless he is immortal and mortal mind at the same time4 ,it is true that ,mrs4 ,eddy denies reality to mortal mind4 ,by mortal mind she means false beliefs about ,god and man4 ,but how did false beliefs originate in a universe where ,god or ,good is the only reality8 ,mrs4 ,eddy's efforts to make room for mortal mind in her perfect world are really amusing1 as will be seen by what follows4 ,man is defined as ,god's spiritual idea1 individual1 perfect1 eternal 7p4 #aae74 ,she explains further that1 while man is not ,god1 he is nevertheless made in ,god's image1 and is therefore ,god-like4 ,the distinction between ,god and man1 according to ,mrs4 ,eddy1 is one of quantity and not of quality4 ,jesus ,christ was not ,god1 she writes2 he was only the ideal of ,god1 now and for ever1 here and everywhere 7p4 #cfa74 ,it is true ,jesus said1 ,i and my father are one2 but1 explains ,mrs4 ,eddy1 what is meant is one in quality1 not in quantity4 ,jesus was ,god in the sense that a drop of water is the ocean1 or a ray of light is the sun--in essence1 not in size4 ,in that sense man too is ,god1 or a little god4 ,both man and ,jesus possess all the qualities of divinity1 but in limited proportions4 ,the science of being1 our prophetess goes on to say1 reveals man as perfect1 even as the ,father is perfect1 because the ,soul and ,mind of the spiritual man is ,god 7p4 #cjb71 but in quality only1 since man is in a degree as perfect as the ,mind that forms him 7p4 #ccg74 ,it follows that if man were ,god-like in quantity as well as in quality--that is1 if he were not undersized or underweighted spiritually1 there would have been no mortal mind1 and therefore no sin or sickness in the world4 ,but who clipped man's divinity1 or made him an underling8 ,in a perfect world how does man happen to be a dwarf8 ,forgetting her own statement1 that man is not so bulky as ,god1 ,mrs4 ,eddy insists that1 as there is no error or sickness in ,god1 there can be none in man1 who is ,god's spiritual idea4 ,yet1 in order to justify ,christian ,science healing1 she is compelled to make a further distinction between ,god and man4 ,god is one1 but there are two kinds of men--the spiritual and the mortal1 and it is the latter who need the high-priced services of healers4 ,god is not corporeal444 mortals are corporeal 7p4 #aaf74 ,if we ask ,mrs4 ,eddy how man could possess a body and yet be the reflection of ,god1 who is incorporeal1 she replies that this body of which she speaks is only a make-believe body2 the real man is all soul1 as is the ,deity4 ,the description of man as both material and spiritual444 is the ,pandora box from which all ills have gone forth4 ,matter is a fiction 7pp4 #agj-a74 ,from which it follows that man is as incorporeal as ,god2 but the former thinks he has a body1 and hence the sufferings from which the ,deity is immune4 ,mistaking his origin and nature1 man believes himself to be combined matter and spirit 7p4 #aga74 ,this1 ,mrs4 ,eddy considers1 is as great an absurdity as to think of ,christ as both ,god and ,devil 7,belial and ,christ74 ,how1 then1 did man come to have a body8 ,he has none2 he has only come to think he has one4 ,and how did that happen8 ,the human mortal mind1 by an inevitable perversion1 makes all things start from the lowest4 ,that is the way1 according to the author of ,science and ,health1 in which man came to believe in matter4 ,this false belief is mortal mind 7pp4 #agb-hi71 the ,dragon which the ,st4 ,george of ,new ,england offers to slay for what she considers a moderate price4 ,let it be observed that ,mrs4 ,eddy attributes the existence or the belief in the existence of mortal mind to the inevitable perversion of the human mind4 ,mark the use of the word inevitable4 ,does she mean that mortal mind--that is to say1 sin1 suffering1 and death--were predestined8 ,if she does not mean that1 what made man's departure from truth1 or his perversion1 inevitable8 ,was there another power1 greater than the ,all1 who pulled man down into error8 ,and how can ,christian ,science1 if it could not prevent the perversion which called into existence the worst of all as well as the parent of all diseases--mortal mind--be a remedy against the innumerable ills which flow from it8 ,in pronouncing mortal mind or the perversion which called it into existence inevitable1 ,mrs4 ,eddy has virtually created a power greater than her ,all in ,all1 since the latter could not prevent the catastrophe4 ,once more3 the reply that man is ,god-like in every respect except in size1 and that the body is a myth1 does not help ,mrs4 ,eddy's argument in the least4 ,real or unreal1 the human body1 or the belief in it1 which causes so much suffering1 should have no place in a system founded upon the dogmatic declaration that all is ,mind1 and all is ,good1 and all is ,god4 ,the question remains3 ,why did ,mrs4 ,eddy make room in this perfect universe for the serpent--mortal mind8 ,as already suggested1 without this false belief in materiality ,christian ,science would have been a useless discovery4 ,mrs4 ,eddy was debarred by her creed from admitting the existence of matter2 hence she compromised on a belief in matter1 which works just as great a havoc as real matter4 ,this arrangement has given to her army of ,christian ,science practitioners many 7imaginary7 ills to heal4 ,like ,don ,quixote1 ,christian ,scientists to-day go forth to do battle1 even though for enemies they have nothing more formidable than windmills4 ,physicians treat what they believe to be real maladies2 ,christian ,scientists combat maladies which they say do not exist--that is to say1 they fight phantoms4 ,not only does the author of ,science and ,health utterly fail1 as all metaphysicians before her have failed1 to account for the origin of evil or mortal mind1 in a universe created and governed by ,infinite ,goodness1 but her doctrine that man1 like the ,deity1 is free from sickness1 etc41 involves her in new contradictions4 ,for example1 on page #bjd 7#aiaj edition7 ,mrs4 ,eddy says that in ,christian ,science it can never be said that man has a mind of his own1 distinct from ,god1 the ,,all-,mind2 and more than once she has asserted that man has neither birth nor death 7p4 #bdd74 ,of course1 this is no more than a theory2 but1 even as such1 ,mrs4 ,eddy makes only a limited application of it--that is to say1 she does not follow her theory to its logical consequences4 ,if man has no mind of his own1 but is a replica of the ,divine mind1 why did the ,deity make so many copies of himself8 ,was this self-multiplication of the ,divine mind from necessity or from choice8 ,if the former1 then necessity was greater than the ,deity2 if the latter1 then man was an accident1 since the ,deity could just as well not have created him at all1 being free to do as he pleased4 ,and if man is a copy of the ,deity1 why did ,he reproduce himself more freely among the inferior races--the blacks and the yellows--than among the white peoples8 ,again1 if man has no mind distinct from the ,divine1 the ,all-,mind1 he ought to have all the attributes of ,god4 ,god is painless1 sinless1 deathless2 and so is man1 according to ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,but why stop there8 ,god is omniscient2 is man omniscient too8 ,then why does he go to school8 ,god is almighty2 is man almighty8 ,then why does he have to use tools or ask for help8 ,god is omnipresent2 why is man dependent upon the means of transportation to go from place to place8 ,how1 then1 does man1 who is not distinct from the ,all-,mind--,god1 come to possess only one or two of the ,divine attributes8 ,mrs4 ,eddy's ,prayer ,it is reported of ,mrs4 ,eddy that every morning as she arose from her bed she repeated the following prayer3 ,clad in the panoply of ,divine love1 human hatred cannot reach me4 ,her followers have expressed great admiration for this1 the ,mother's daily prayer4 ,but to be forever thinking of human hatred1 and to live in constant dread of it1 shows a broken-down mind4 ,only a person haunted by the fear of human hatred would beg daily to be delivered from it4 ,if on getting up every morning a man were to say1 ,to-day my liver shall not hurt me1 one would have reason to conclude that he was suffering from liver trouble4 ,to deny human hatred every morning is also proof positive of an alarmed conscience4 ,macbeth saw ,banquo's ghost everywhere and dared it with his avaunt and hence1 even as ,mrs4 ,eddy1 seeing so much of human hatred1 ran under cover of the ,divine panoply the first thing every morning4 ,is that the way to prove that all is mind1 and that there is nothing to fear8 ,is ,christian ,science ,scientific8 ,two words spell the name of this so-called health religion--,christian and ,science4 ,let us see if there is anything scientific about ,christian ,science4 ,to begin with1 men of science never try to suppress inquiry1 because inquiry only helps to advance their cause1 which can advance in no other way4 ,science is investigation4 ,eddyism1 on the other hand1 is a dogma4 ,science is knowledge1 verified1 classified1 and placed within the reach of all4 ,eddyism is a copyrighted cult4 ,science is free2 in science we do not have to secure permission before observing1 studying1 inventing1 or teaching4 ,but ,mrs4 ,eddy reads out of church the independent thinker or practitioner4 ,science is open to new truths4 ,christian ,science claims to be a final revelation4 ,for any man or woman to profess to be the custodian of the last word on religion1 and then to copyright the same1 is not only the negation of all science1 which means increasing research and unhampered discovery1 but it is also the most objectionable kind of monopoly4 ,science always accepts truth for authority1 and never authority for truth4 ,christian ,science1 on the contrary1 rests on the sole authority of ,mrs4 ,eddy's ,science and ,health with ,key to the ,scriptures4 ,the fundamental difference between ,mrs4 ,eddy and a scientist like ,charles ,darwin1 for example1 is that1 while the latter confines himself to such statements as are investigable1 ,mrs4 ,eddy puts forth claims which defy investigation4 ,let me give an example4 ,the founder of ,christian ,science solemnly declares that even the price she should charge for a course of instruction in metaphysics was dictated to her by the ,deity himself3 ,when ,god impelled me to set a price on ,christian ,science--mind healing--,i was led to name #cjj as the price4 ,and she adds3 ,this amount greatly troubled me4 ,i shrank from asking it1 but was finally led by a strange providence to accept this fee4 ,it must have been a strange providence1 indeed6 ,but can a claim of that nature be verified8 ,if we desired to make sure whether the ,supreme ,being1 with the destinies of ten thousand worlds upon ,his mind1 found the time to fix also the dividend rate upon ,mrs4 ,eddy's investment in ,christian ,science1 how would he go about it8 ,how shall we make sure that the ,deity did not1 on the contrary1 plead with her to be satisfied with a more moderate profit8 ,while in ,salt ,lake ,city ,i enjoyed the opportunity of an interview with a prominent ,mormon4 ,finding me willing to listen1 the gentleman told me how ,joseph ,smith had received a visit from the angels who delivered to him the originals from which were copied the articles of the ,mormon belief4 ,when ,i expressed a desire to see the heavenly documents1 my informant replied that ,joseph ,smith had returned them to the angels4 ,is such a statement investigatable8 ,and what is not investigable lies outside the province of science4 ,neither ,mrs4 ,eddy nor ,joseph ,smith can be put in the same class with ,charles ,darwin1 who advances no propositions which forbid verification4 ,is ,christian ,science ,christian8 ,eddyism is no more ,christian than it is scientific4 ,between the teachings of ,jesus and those of the ,boston lady there are irreconcilable differences4 ,it is the claim of practitioners in ,christian ,science that they are following the example and applying the method of the founder of ,christianity in the healing of the sick4 ,this is one of the telling arguments used by ,christian ,science lecturers in their appeals for converts4 ,but if it can be shown that the method of ,jesus was in many respects radically different from that prescribed by ,mrs4 ,eddy1 the claim that her religion is founded upon the teachings and practice of ,jesus falls to the ground4 ,in a pamphlet issued by the ,christian ,science ,publication ,society and copyrighted we read as follows2 ,jesus proved for all time and for all ,christendom that the origin of disease was mental1 and ,he healed it with mental medicine4 ,can that statement be squared with the practice of ,jesus as we find it described in the ,gospels8 ,the evangelist ,st4 ,john relates the cure of the man born blind as follows3 ,when he ,jesus had thus spoken1 ,he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle1 and ,he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay and said unto him1 ',go1 wash in the pool of ,siloam4' ,is that the ,christian ,science way of healing the sick8 ,do ,christian ,scientists use clay or spittle8 ,do they anoint the sick with salve of any kind8 ,do they counsel bathing or washing for curative purposes8 ,moreover1 ,jesus1 in reply to the question of ,his apostles as to the cause of the man's blindness1 clearly states that the origin of this man's disease was not in human error or mentality3-- ,and his disciples asked him1 saying1 ,master1 who did sin1 this man1 or his parents1 that he was born blind8 ,jesus answered1 ,neither hath this man sinned1 nor his parents2 but that the works of ,god should be made manifest in him4 7,john ix1 #b-c47 ,the meaning of this text is that the man was born blind1 not as a punishment for his or his parents' sin1 nor because of mortal mind1 but that through him ,god may be glorified4 ,could that text be quoted to show that blindness is a mental disease caused by unbelief or selfishness8 or could it be quoted to prove that the man was not born blind1 but only thought he was blind8 ,where is the evidence1 then1 that ,jesus proved for all time and for all ,christendom that 'disease was caused by mortal mind1' and that 'mental medicine' was the only remedy he used8 ,was ,jesus in the habit of using words to mislead his hearers1 of saying things the real meaning of which would remain hidden for nearly twenty centuries--until ,mrs4 ,eddy could place her key 7from three to six dollars a key7 upon the market8 ,the evangelist ,st4 ,mark gives another instance of ,jesus's method of healing which is again totally different from ,mrs4 ,eddy's3-- ,and they bring unto him one that was deaf and had an impediment in his speech1 and they beseech him to put his hand upon him4 ,and he took him aside from the multitude1 and put his fingers into his ears1 and he spit and touched his tongue4 ,will the ,christian ,science healers explain the functions of the hand1 the fingers1 and the spit in mental medicine8 ,if it be answered that ,jesus resorted to material means to illustrate the power of the spirit1 etc41 it would follow that material means may be used to advantage1 and that there is no such feud between matter and mind as the ,eddyites proclaim4 ,many other texts could be quoted to show that ,jesus used material means4 ,he touched the bier1 he laid his hands on the patient1 which is the kind of manipulation vehemently denounced by ,mrs4 ,eddy in her comments on mesmerism4 ,the touch so frequent in the miracles performed by ,jesus is downright heresy in ,mrs4 ,eddy's system of healing4 ,now when the sun was setting1 all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him2 and he laid his hands on every one of them4 7,luke iv1 #dj47 ,again1 ,jesus recommends to his disciples dieting by way of abstinence from food--that is1 fasting--for the healing of obstinate diseases4 ,evidently he believed that dieting increased one's healing power4 ,in the same pamphlet published and copyrighted by the ,christian ,science ,publication ,society1 the author1 ,william ,r4 ,rathbon1 member of the ,board of ,lectureship of the ,first ,church of ,christ1 ,scientist1 in ,boston1 writes3 ,he ,jesus gave himself no concern about physical symptoms444 ,he cared little about what the sick man had been eating1 but much about what he had been thinking4 ,in the ,new ,testament1 however1 nearly every patient's symptoms are described1 to which ,jesus listened without a word of protest and with apparent consent4 ,had the evangelists believed1 as the ,christian ,science lecturers teach1 that disease is purely mental1 they would not have gone into details in describing physical symptoms4 ,and a certain woman1 which had an issue of blood twelve years 7,mark v1 #be47 ,does not that describe the nature and duration1 as well as the physical effects1 of the woman's disease8 ,lord1 have mercy upon my son1 for he is a lunatic 7,matt1 xvii1 #ae74 ,and one of the multitude said1 ,master1 ,i have brought unto thee my son2 and then the father proceeds to describe the symptoms of his son's malady3 ,he foameth and gnasheth with his teeth1 and pineth away 7,mark ix1 #ag74 ,in all these cases there was not a word of rebuke from the great healer because of the symptoms described4 ,jesus himself1 on one occasion1 asked for certain physical details before proceeding to heal the patient3--,and he ,jesus asked his father the father of the sick youth1 ,how long is it ago since this came unto him8 7,mark ix1 #ba47 ,what difference did it make when or how the disease was contracted if it is true that ,jesus proved for all time and for all ,christendom that the origin of disease was mental1 and he healed it with mental medicine8 ,perhaps the motive for representing ,jesus as indifferent to the physical condition of his patient is to excuse the ,christian ,science practitioner for his ignorance of the human body and his contempt for physical science4 ,but the most irreconcilable difference between ,jesus ,christ and ,mary ,baker ,eddy is in the spirit in which they performed their miracles4 ,jesus does not appear to have had any financial schemes in his head4 ,he tells his followers to give freely the power which they have themselves freely received4 ,the idea of taking money for a cure1 or charging a large sum for the purpose of encouraging appreciation for his gifts1 would have shocked the ,jesus of the ,gospels4 ,the mere suggestion that some day a woman would copyright and commercialize this divine power would have made him indignant beyond expression4 ,it is impossible to believe that the ,jesus who said1 ,get you no gold1 no silver1 nor brass1 neither two coats1 nor shoes1 and also1 ,freely ye received1 freely give1 could have the remotest sympathy with a woman who not only sells what she calls the power of ,god1 but has also secured by legal procedure a corner on it4 ,mrs4 ,eddy's religion1 then1 is no more ,christian than it is scientific4 ,had she been dealing in food products instead of in religion1 the use of a false label would have made her liable to prosecution4 ,arrested ,mentation ,perhaps the term which best describes the thinking which leads so many to accept ,mrs4 ,eddy's teaching as both scientific and ,christian is what the psychologists call arrested mentation4 ,the majority of people reason admirably up to a certain point1 and then they suddenly come to a full stop4 ,having followed the right path to a considerable distance1 they then deliberately refuse to follow it further4 ,to speak more plainly1 there are many people who reason correctly enough on some subjects1 but on other subjects they manifest a credulity beyond belief4 ,the ,moslem1 for instance1 uses his reason against the claims of every religion but his own4 ,the ,christian ,scientist argues like a trained logician against all alien cults1 but when it is a question of his own faith he bids his reason to hush4 ,for example1 he observes1 accurately enough1 as we all do1 that the mind frequently creates the conditions of the body4 ,a man may at times think himself sick1 or he may think himself into health4 ,the will1 too1 is a factor to be reckoned with4 ,the truth of the saying1 ,where there's a will there's away1 has more than once been demonstrated4 ,in the same way1 we all admit1 since experience compels it1 that the greater thoughts or sensations often crowd out of the mind the lesser ones4 ,that is an axiom4 ,if ,i am suffering from a toothache1 the sudden appearance of a burglar in my room1 pointing a revolver at me1 will in all probability make me forget my toothache instantly4 ,the cavity or the affected nerve which caused my pain is as real as ever1 but for the time being ,i have a more intense sensation elsewhere in my system which renders me quite oblivious to the comparatively lesser pain4 ,within certain limits and in connection with certain maladies this principle--namely1 the creating of a more powerful emotion in the mind than the one which is absorbing attention--could be1 and is1 utilized with therapeutic results4 ,for people who worry1 who imagine things1 a complete diversion is usually all the medicine needed4 ,so far1 so well4 ,but the ,christian ,scientists who keep their eyes open to the evidences of the mind controlling the body1 and know very well how to use these as arguments1 shut their eyes completely to the equally convincing proofs of the power of the body over the mind4 ,hunger or insomnia1 if prolonged1 will put the mind out of commission4 ,destroy the optic nerve1 and all the mentality in the world cannot make the eyes see4 ,stop the full flow of blood into the brain1 and every one of our mental faculties--memory1 perception1 judgment1 as well as the power of speech--becomes crippled1 if not totally destroyed4 ,will any sensible person dispute these statements8 ,the ,christian ,scientist1 who sees how many things the mind can do1 deliberately ignores the things it cannot do4 ,can mind1 as ,herbert ,spencer asks1 change a field sown in wheat into a cotton field8 ,can it make a horse into a cow8 ,can it transform an ,african into an ,anglo-,saxon8 ,can it convert copper or brass into gold8 ,can we1 by thinking1 make the sun go around the earth8 ,at one time people did think that the sun moved and that the earth stood still4 ,did thinking make it so8 ,it would be easier to prove that the mind would be helpless without the body than that the body would be helpless without the mind4 ,take away from man his erect posture or his hands1 and not even the mentality of a ,prometheus would prevent the decline and deterioration of the human race4 ,what a wonderful instrument is the hand6 ,it has no doubt contributed much towards the evolution of man4 ,the thumb meeting each finger separately1 or all four of them combined1 enables one to take hold of things4 ,the ability to feel things with the hands1 to turn them over1 to take them apart1 to bring them nearer to the eyes for a more minute examination1 started the mind into action1 just as the same hands1 by putting food into the mouth1 started the machinery of life into going4 ,deprive man of his hands1 and he will slowly slip to the foot of the ladder1 no matter how much mind he may have4 ,on the other hand1 endow an oyster with the human frame1 and in time it will develop a mind and a civilization4 ,an oyster with the mind of a ,shakespeare would still be an oyster1 while a ,shakespeare with the body of an oyster would have no use for his thousand souls4 ,why do not the converts of ,mrs4 ,eddy see all sides of a question8 ,because they think so far and no farther4 ,do ,christian ,scientists ,use their ,minds8 ,despite the frequent use of the word mind1 there are perhaps few people who use their minds less than ,mrs4 ,eddy's disciples4 ,mental development is possible only where there is freedom to think1 to experiment1 to differ1 and to originate4 ,are ,christian ,scientists permitted to think for themselves8 ,are they at liberty to differ or to express original views8 ,to repeat or imitate another very little mind is required4 ,all the ,christian ,science topics1 lessons1 and instructions are issued from headquarters1 and the official readers in the denomination merely repeat these verbatim4 ,in their ,sunday meetings no original or even individual word is allowed4 ,of what use1 then1 is mentality to a consistent ,christian ,scientist1 who believes that the truth1 the only truth1 the final truth1 has been discovered and brought to him once for all8 ,in the ,kentucky cave of darkness fishes and mice are found without eyes4 ,what use could they make of sight in the darkness8 ,mind may become as superfluous to human beings who have nothing more to discover as eyes are to the denizens of ,mammoth ,cave4 ,the following from a letter sent to ,mrs4 ,eddy and printed in ,science and ,health 7p4 #fae7 shows what small use some people have for their minds4 ,the writer1 whose initials alone are given1 ,l4 ,c4 ,l41 ,salt ,lake ,city1 ,utah1 writes how he fell from his bicycle while riding down a hill at a rapid pace2 and1 falling on my left side with my arm under my head1 the bone was broken about halfway between the shoulder and elbow4 ,while the pain was intense1 ,i lay in the dust declaring the truth1 and denying that there could be a break or accident in the realm of ,divine ,love4 ,so saying1 he remounts his wheel and rides home and orders ,science and ,health to be brought to him immediately1 which ,i read for about ten minutes1 when all pain left4 ,when he told his story his hearers would not believe that his arm could have been broken4 ,to prove that it had he goes to an ,x-ray physician1 who says3 ,yes1 it has been broken1 but whoever set it made a perfect job of it1 and you will never have any further trouble from that break4 ,the writer concludes his letter with3 ,this is the first of several cases of mental surgery that have come under my notice4 ,what shall we think of the mentality which can be the parent of such contradictions6 ,here is a man who admits that he fell1 though there are no accidents in the realm of ,divine ,love4 ,he also admits that he broke his arm while denying that there could be a break in the realm of ,divine ,love4 ,the broken bone is set by the reading of ,science and ,health1 although it could not have been broken1 for he did not fall1 seeing that there are no accidents in the realm of ,divine ,love4 ,if he did not fall1 he did not break his bone4 ,but if the bone was not broken1 it was not set2 and if it was not set1 there was nothing to prove the healing power of ,christian ,science4 ,therefore1 he did fall and did break his bone while denying that there could be a break or an accident in the realm of ,divine ,love2 and a physician1 a man of material science1 is called in to prove that the broken bone was admirably set by mental surgery4 ,let me add that if ,science and ,health could set a broken bone1 it could also have prevented the accident4 ,if it could not1 then ,christian ,science is insufficient2 if it could have prevented the fall and the breaking of the bone1 and did not1 then it was responsible for the misfortune4 ,the further fact that the ,x-ray discovered that the bone had been set proves that ,mrs4 ,eddy's ,science and ,health had not been able to obliterate all the marks of the fall and the break2 which again shows that accidents do happen and bones do break in the realm of ,divine ,love4 ,people who make no better use of their minds than ,l4 ,c4 ,l4 of ,salt ,lake ,city does might just as well have no more mind than the cave fishes have eyes4 ,examples of ,reasoning4 ,on the fly-leaf of ,mrs4 ,eddy's now famous book appears this quotation from ,shakespeare3 ,there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so4 ,this is given a place of honour in her book because it is supposed to prove the truth of ,christian ,science4 ,but a wee bit of clear thinking or of the power of analysis would have helped ,mrs4 ,eddy to see that her opening quotation completely destroys all that she advocates in the rest of her book4 ,the doctrine of ,mrs4 ,eddy is that all is ,god2 that ,god or the good alone exists1 and that evil1 etc41 is mere illusion4 ,according to her teaching1 sickness1 sin1 and death do not exist except for those who believe in them4 ,the only reality is ,god or goodness4 ,but the text from ,shakespeare which she so prominently displays upon her banners denies ,god or goodness1 just as effectually as it does evil and the devil4 ,there is nothing--1 says the great poet4 ,mark that1 ,christian ,scientists6 ,is that any text to quote to prove that there is truth1 and there is goodness1 and there is ,god8 ,there is nothing either good--,pause again3 ,are ,mrs4 ,eddy's troops of voiceless followers willing to subscribe to that statement8 ,if ,shakespeare1 ,mrs4 ,eddy's authority1 is right1 the good is as illusory as the bad1 for he says plainly that there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so1 which should make ,god1 goodness1 health1 and truth as much an unreality as sickness or sin4 ,moreover1 the ,shakespearean argument makes man the creator of both the good and the evil in the world1 since it is his thinking which determines the nature of things4 ,mrs4 ,eddy1 on the contrary1 maintains that man is merely a reflection of the ,deity1 who alone exists and is the only reality4 ,it must have been the greatness of ,shakespeare's name which tempted ,mrs4 ,eddy to quote from him on the very first page of her book4 ,but metaphysical arguments are like balloons3 the bladders burst1 and nothing remains4 ,in order to prove that all disease is mental1 the following argument is frequently used4 ,i shall give it precisely as ,i find it in ,christian ,science3 ,its ,results 7p4 #ad2 copyright1 #aiah1 by the ,christian ,science ,publication ,society73--,if1 then1 it is considered that the state of mind may disturb the secretions1 causing the tears to flow2 or that the state of mind may quicken the action of the heart1 causing the blood to rush to the face or away from it2 or if the state of mind can affect the organs of the throat1 causing huskiness1 then it is plain that the state of mind may be held accountable for other derangements of the organs of secretion1 of circulation1 and of speech4 ,and if of these1 why not of other organs of the body8 ,it is not denied that mental conditions often become manifest in their effects upon the body4 ,but1 first1 what produces these mental conditions8 ,the ,eddyites do not seem to care to penetrate into that question at all4 ,is it not true that in the majority of cases it is some physical or material cause which has either depressed or exalted the mind--brought tears to the eyes or dried them8 ,the sight of a sudden and terrible accident to a child while crossing the street will1 for the moment1 rob onlookers of their power of speech1 blanch their cheeks and daze them beyond the ability to move or to think4 ,in the same way1 the news that a dear son has been gassed or killed in battle will change a happy home into a house of mourning1 depriving its inmates of sleep and appetite4 ,on the other hand1 the unexpected discovery of a vein of gold on one's farm will exhilarate the mind and banish a hundred fears4 ,these mental moods have physical causes4 ,just as heat passes into motion and motion again into heat1 material events produce mental moods2 and these mental moods resolve themselves once more into physical manifestations1 such as laughter or tears4 ,the ,christian ,scientist observes accurately enough that depression and discouragement cause sickness1 but he is too impatient to learn that these mental states are often the result of bad circulation or mal-assimilation of food4 ,lack of fresh air1 defective vision1 or a dull but constant physical pain very often lowers the mental tone1 proving thereby the interdependence of mind and matter4 ,the lecturer from whose pamphlet ,i have quoted realizes that salt water will flow from the eyes if he is subjected to great grief1 and that the state of mind may disturb the secretions1 causing the tears to flow1 and concludes therefrom that dyspepsia and all other bodily diseases and derangements should be treated with truth rather than with tabloids and powders4 ,but what if the secretions are disturbed by purely physical causes8 ,a child cries for something to eat1 and not from unbelief or fear1 which are supposed to be purely mental states2 and a piece of cake will relieve his hunger and dry his tears4 ,a splinter in the eye will provoke tears1 as will also a sharp1 cold wind2 the removal of the one1 and protection from the other1 will immediately dry the eyes4 ,peeling onions starts the secretions4 ,do onions come under the class of mental causes8 ,let me give another illustration4 ,wishing to prove that the material world is an illusion of the senses1 ,mrs4 ,eddy tells us that on a wet day1 when there is a downpour of rain1 and when mist and fog shroud land and sea1 we can easily assure ourselves that our senses are not telling us the truth1 that the weather is really fine1 by consulting a barometer1 which in the midst of cloud and rain points to clear weather4 ,what shall we think of the mentality of a woman who appeals to a barometer to prove that matter does not exist8 ,if ,mrs4 ,eddy had not suddenly stopped thinking1 she would have seen that if our senses betray us when they report wet weather1 neither would we have any assurance that what they say about the barometer is dependable4 ,does she think that our senses are not trustworthy except when they refer us to the barometer8 ,inconsistent thinking is often also responsible for inconsistency in conduct4 ,the ,christian ,scientist1 for example1 objects to the physician1 but patronizes the dentist4 ,yet dental surgery is not different from medicine1 but is one of its many branches4 ,it is by the science of medicine that the trouble in the body is located1 diagnosed1 and remedied by the knife1 if it cannot be by medication4 ,besides1 the wound or incision is treated medicinally1 which requires medical knowledge on the part of the surgeon1 just as it does on the part of the regular physician4 ,can a dentist practise surgery without a knowledge of the human anatomy--that is to say1 of how many bones and muscles there are in the body1 where the nerves are located1 to what sort of treatment they will respond1 and to what laws of growth and decay they are subject8 ,does he not treat an abscess or receding gums with medicine8 ,and does this not require a knowledge of medicine which to ,christian ,scientists is nothing but error8 ,why do not these people invite a novice or their cooks or barbers to work on their teeth if a knowledge of anatomy1 physiology1 and medicine is not necessary to make a man a good dentist8 ,the mere fact that ,christian ,scientists will not allow any one but a man with a diploma from a dental college to attend to their teeth proves conclusively that they regard a knowledge of medicine just as necessary as we do--only we admit it frankly1 and they deny it foolishly4 ,if the ,christian ,scientists have not progressed sufficiently to demonstrate against surgery1 they should at least be grateful to us for taking care of their needs in the meantime1 and help support the physical sciences until they are able to dispense with them4 ,in her ,science and ,health ,mrs4 ,eddy ridicules those who think that vegetation or flowers can cause sickness1 or that there can be such a thing as a rose cold4 ,the rose1 she writes1 is the smile of ,god1 and to accuse it of producing fevers or colds is to make ,god the author of disease4 ,this is strange reasoning4 ,if the rose represents the smile of ,god1 what do the bugs and crawling insects on its petals represent8 ,and whose smile are its thorns which prick x and draw blood8 ,further1 if a rose1 a material flower1 can represent the ,divine smile1 why may not other equally material things have a mission in life--such as representing and imparting health8 ,if the ,deity can use the rose to reveal his smile1 why may he not use herbs or minerals for curative purposes8 ,why may not soap and water1 cleanliness1 fresh air1 temperance in food and drink and exercise1 have as useful a purpose in the ,divine economy of things as the rose8 ,on p4 #dhh of ,science and ,health ,mrs4 ,eddy writes3--,christian ,science sustains with immortal proof the impossibility of any material sense1 and defines these so-called senses as mortal beliefs1 the testimony of which cannot be true4 ,nerves have no more sensation1 apart from what belief bestows upon them1 than the fibres of a plant4 ,in the above1 as also in innumerable other passages1 the founder of ,christian ,science advises her readers to deny the testimony of their senses4 ,they are urged to deny that matter can ache1 swell1 and be inflamed4 ,never mind the witness of our senses2 bones cannot break1 nerves cannot feel1 the nose cannot smell1 and the eyes cannot see4 ,but did she stop to think where such advice would carry us8 ,i smell something burning in the kitchen or in the basement2 but no1 the senses lie4 ,there is nothing burning2 there is nothing to burn4 ,i feel and see smoke filling the room4 ,i can hardly breathe2 but no1 the senses are a fraud4 ,there is no smoke in the room1 and ,i am not choking2 for has not ,mrs4 ,eddy demonstrated with immortal proof that corporeal senses defraud and lie1 and that they are the only source of evil or error 7pp4 #dhh and #dhi78 ,if the infant is crying in the nursery because it has fallen from its cradle1 or because it has stumbled into the fire1 there is no need to rush for help1 because the report of our senses that the child is in danger is a lie4 ,christian ,science shows them our senses to be false 7p4 #dhi74 ,fortunate it is that not many parents are consistent ,christian ,scientists4 ,it is said that ,christian ,science does not deal with man as he appears1 but man as he is--unborn and undying4 ,very well2 is what ,mrs4 ,eddy and her followers write or say about man unborn and undying debatable or un-debatable8 ,if debatable1 we have a right to ask the ,eddyites to conform to the canons of human reason2 but if ,christian ,science is non-debatable--that is1 if it cannot be understood by such minds as we possess1 then why write or talk about it at all8 ,do ,christian ,scientists ,practise what they ,preach8 ,mrs4 ,eddy teaches that the material universe is an illusion4 ,do the ,christian ,scientists try to live up to this8 ,i say1 do they try1 because to try is about all that any one can do1 as it is an utter impossibility to really live up to such a belief4 ,let us see if there is any difference between the way we treat our bodies and the way ,mrs4 ,eddy's followers treat theirs4 ,we believe the body exists1 and therefore we protect it with clothing4 ,the ,christian ,scientists do the same1 although they should not believe such material things as flesh and bone exist4 ,we sleep to be refreshed2 so do they4 ,we have a roof over our heads2 so have they4 ,we close our windows in the winter and build a fire2 they do the same4 ,we are growing older2 so are they4 ,now and then we feel unwell1 and apply to a helper of some kind for treatment1 when we cannot cope with the trouble ourselves2 the ,christian ,scientists do the same4 ,we die from some cause or other2 so do they4 ,if ,christian ,scientists never need any treatment1 why are there so many practitioners among them8 ,how do they make a living if no one of their circle is ever taken sick8 ,i admit that we do not take the same treatment1 or go to the same helper1 or call our troubles by the same name2 but1 dear me6 why make such an ado over mere names8 ,in what respect1 then1 do ,christian ,scientists1 who do not believe in the body1 treat theirs differently from the way we treat ours8 ,we have to eat to keep ourselves alive2 so do they4 ,we have to take liquids with our food2 so do they4 ,we bathe our bodies because to do so is refreshing and cleanly4 ,why do they bathe theirs8 ,we need fresh air2 ,mrs4 ,eddy rode out every day for the same purpose4 ,and does not the ,eddyite1 like every one else1 repair his house or weed his garden8 ,does he not ,paris ,green his vegetables8 ,does he not screen his windows8 ,does he not scrub his floors8 ,why may he not1 with equal reason1 resort to certain means to protect his teeth1 his eyes1 or his digestive organs8 ,if ,mind is ,all1 ,mrs4 ,eddy's disciples should dispense with the use of powders and cosmetics1 and their houses and gardens should be free from wear and tear1 as their persons are supposed to be4 ,are not tree and plant1 house and land1 face and teeth1 included in the ,all which is ,mind8 ,and do ,christian ,scientists use ,divine healing also for the horse and the dog8 ,do they employ dressmakers to clothe their minds or their bodies8 ,if ,mind is ,all1 why do not our trains run without engineers1 or our ships sail without pilots8 ,are physicians the only people the ,deity will not tolerate8 ,if engineers and pilots represent ,mind1 why not doctors8 ,it is admitted by leaders in ,christian ,science that many among their followers insure1 not only their buildings against fire1 but also their lives against accident1 sickness1 and death4 ,of course1 death can be caused only by sickness1 accident1 or old age4 ,it follows that the ,christian ,scientist takes thought of accident1 sickness1 and old age1 and guards against them precisely as non-,christian ,scientists do4 ,i know also of ,christian ,scientists who are in the life insurance business--that is to say1 while they deny sickness and accident they argue with their clients that it is the part of wisdom1 as well as a duty they owe their families1 to buy insurance4 ,is that the way to practise what one professes8 ,let us continue4 ,mrs4 ,eddy declares there is no matter1 and then she proceeds to write a book4 ,why could not ,mrs4 ,eddy communicate her revelation to her pupils without the help of a book8 ,would not that have been a real miracle8 ,why should ,absolute ,mind be dependent upon ink and type8 ,is not a book--its paper1 its cloth1 its ink1 its glue and boards--as material as any drug which the chemist manufactures8 ,if ,mrs4 ,eddy is not able to reach the minds of her disciples without appealing to their senses of touch and sight1 why condemn the doctors for using equally material means to influence their patients8 ,but ,mrs4 ,eddy goes beyond the physician in her materialism4 ,a doctor1 for example1 invents an instrument to render surgical operations less painful1 but he does not patent his idea to protect his profits4 ,mrs4 ,eddy discovers ,divine healing and copyrights it4 ,moreover1 the physician is the inventor of his own instrument4 ,mrs4 ,eddy declares that her book is from ,god1 and then proceeds to copyright what does not belong to her4 ,the hosts of people who proclaim ,mrs4 ,eddy's name and bend the knee to her do not seem to reflect that to copyright ,god's thoughts is an attempt to copyright the ,deity4 ,a ,new ,england woman plans to secure a corner on the ,divine mind for commercial purposes1 else why does she charge such high prices for her book8 ,and yet not one of her admiring followers breathes even a murmur against it4 ,it has been said that the lady copyrighted her books and asked a big price for them1 netting her nearly five hundred per cent1 profit1 not because she wanted the money1 but to make the buyers appreciate the book4 ,but what becomes of ,divine science if it must count on money to make people appreciate its merits8 ,if the ,eddyites may use money to influence minds1 why may not a doctor use drugs to get results8 ,really the metaphysical fraternity1 instead of being sufficiently advanced in ,divine science to dispense with medical help1 are often compelled to employ the services of more than one doctor4 ,the devout follower of ,mrs4 ,eddy1 if he has a tooth to be extracted or a decayed root to be removed1 or an abscess in the ear to be treated1 engages1 besides the services of an expert physician1 also some metaphysical practitioner4 ,thus1 while the non-,christian ,scientist employs only one kind of doctor1 the believer in ,divine mind employs two4 ,when a ,christian ,scientist goes to a hospital for an operation1 he either takes a practitioner of his own faith with him and instals him in a room near-by to give him ,divine treatment while the surgeon is operating on him1 or he goes to the phone just before going under the knife to ask his favourite practitioner for absent treatment4 ,two doctors instead of one--that is how ,christian ,science has done away with doctors4 ,of course1 it is true that only in serious cases do ,christian ,scientists call upon outside help2 but1 then1 in cases not serious anybody can get along without expert assistance4 ,in ,science and ,health 7p4 #dfc7 ,mrs4 ,eddy gives the following explanation of her seclusion from the world3 ,it has been said to the author3 ',the world has been benefited by you1 but it feels your influence without seeing you4 ,why do you not make yourself more widely known8' ,could her friends know how little time the author has had in which to make herself outwardly known except through her laborious publications--and how much time and thought are still required to establish the stately operations of ,christian ,science--they would understand why she is so secluded4 ,is not this an admission of her limitations8 ,and can a woman1 claiming to be one with ,god1 unborn and undying1 afford to confess that she has neither the time nor the ability to do all that is required of her8 ,on p4 #dfd of her book ,mrs4 ,eddy advises her followers to let a surgeon give them a hypodermic injection to relieve their pain1 and a few sentences after she writes3 ,adulterating ,christian ,science makes it void4 ,falsity has no foundation1 ,she advises her followers1 when ,divine science fails1 to take a hypodermic for help1 and then she tells them that adulterating ,christian ,science makes it void1 which leaves her disciples between the devil and the deep sea4 ,and what if there were no hypodermics to relieve the pain which ,mrs4 ,eddy's doctrine had failed to cope with8 ,what if there were no surgeons to administer the drug8 ,under ,christian ,science all these material means are to be abolished1 leaving the whole field to ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,to whom1 then1 will a ,christian ,scientist1 seized with pain so violent that he cannot treat himself mentally1 go for relief8 ,mrs4 ,eddy knows very well that physicians and not surgeons give hypodermic injections2 but she has not the courage1 nor1 ,i regret to say1 the honesty1 to say anything good of a physician4 ,is not such a mind as ,mrs4 ,eddy's a menace8 ,observe again that when a ,christian ,scientist is in intense pain he must not seek instant relief by an appeal to real science1 but must first try ,mrs4 ,eddy's remedy2 only when that fails may he resort to a hypodermic injection4 ,how long a trial should the sufferer of intense pain give to ,mrs4 ,eddy's remedy is not stated2 but this much is certain1 he is to suffer the intense pain as long as he can bear it before trying any other remedy4 ,knowing very well that a hypodermic might give instant relief to a patient in intense agony1 ,mrs4 ,eddy nevertheless insists that the patient shall try her uncertain remedy first4 ,but what follows is really debasing3 ,when the belief of pain is lulled by the hypodermic he1 the sufferer1 can handle his own case mentally4 ,thus it is that we 'prove all things and hold fast that which is good4' ,could there be anything more hypocritical than such reasoning8 ,after the pain has been relieved by a physician1 the ,christian ,scientist will treat himself mentally--for what8 ,it is very much like saying that after a starving man has been fed let him proceed to demonstrate that food is not necessary for the relief of hunger4 ,but the real motive for demanding that mental treatment should follow the hypodermic injection is to be able to claim that the cure1 after all1 was not effected by the physician1 but by ,mrs4 ,eddy's remedy4 ,moreover1 if hypodermic injections are permitted for the relief of intense pain1 why may not antiseptics be allowed for protection against germs1 ansthetics to deaden sensation1 and antidotes to counteract poisons8 ,after the antidote has killed the effects of the poison1 the ,christian ,scientist1 following ,mrs4 ,eddy's instructions1 may treat himself mentally and deny the reality of both poison and antidote4 ,instead of recommending the services of a surgeon1 would it not have been better for ,mrs4 ,eddy to have advised her followers to go about equipped1 not only with her ,science and ,health1 but also with a pocket apparatus or instrument for giving to one's self or others hypodermic injections in cases where ,christian ,science failed them8 ,really1 when ,mrs4 ,eddy says1 ,if from an injury1 or from any cause1 a ,christian ,scientist were seized with pain so violent that he could not treat himself mentally--and the ,christian ,scientist had failed to relieve him--the sufferer could call a surgeon1 who would give him a hypodermic injection1 she surrenders everything1 and her metaphysics collapses like a bubble4 ,it goes to prove that1 despite her many bizarre somersaults in the air1 she cannot avoid landing upon matter4 ,when ,christian ,science fails1 there is still the surgeon with his hypodermic injection4 ,what an anti-climax6 ,like all metaphysicians1 ,mrs4 ,eddy emerges from the same door wherein she entered4 ,again ,mrs4 ,eddy practically overthrows the foundations of her faith when she writes3 ,if a dose of poison is swallowed through mistake1 and the patient dies444 does human belief1 you ask1 cause this death8 ,even so1 and as directly as if the poison had been intentionally taken4 ,in such cases a few persons believe the potion swallowed by the patient to be harmless2 but the vast majority of mankind1 though they know nothing of this particular case and this special person1 believe the arsenic1 strychnine1 or whatever the drug used1 to be poisonous1 for it is set down as a poison by mortal mind4 ,consequently the result is controlled by the majority of opinions1 not by the infinitesimal minority of opinions in the sick chamber 7pp4 #agg-gh74 ,with that statement it may be said that ,christian ,science commits suicide4 ,only a logic-proof mind could fail to see that to admit the helplessness of ,christian ,science when in the minority against the majority of opinions1 as ,mrs4 ,eddy does in the above passage1 is tantamount to saying that at present1 at least1 no patient can be healed by ,christian ,science1 since the result is controlled by the majority of opinions1 not by the infinitesimal minority of opinions in the sick chamber4 ,not only does the statement quoted deny to ,christian ,science the power to cope successfully with the majority of opinions1 but it also destroys faith in the testimonials from patients who claim to have been cured by ,mrs4 ,eddy's discovery4 ,so long as the four hundred millions of ,china1 the three hundred millions of ,india1 and the hosts of ,africa1 to which should be added the multitudes in ,europe and ,america1 believe the potion swallowed to be poisonous1 or the sickness complained of to be real1 for it is set down as a poison1 or as sickness by mortal mind1 a handful of ,eddyites representing an infinitesimal minority can effect no cures1 seeing that the result is controlled by the majority of opinions4 ,on page #afb of her book ,mrs4 ,eddy writes3 ,i have restored what is called the lost substance of lungs444444,christian ,science heals organic disease as surely as it does what is called functional4 ,she also claims to have elongated shortened limbs1 etc4 ,but how could she perform the latter miracle against the opinion held by the majority that shortened limbs cannot be elongated1 and after admitting1 as she does1 that in the sick chamber the result is controlled by the majority of opinions1 and not by the infinitesimal minority of opinions8 ,in her attempt to answer the question1 why ,christian ,science fails to cure the patient who has accidentally swallowed a deadly drug1 ,mrs4 ,eddy strips her discovery of all its power to heal and makes the majority of opinions the controlling factor4 ,in one and the same breath she announces the supremacy of ,infinite ,mind1 who never endowed matter with power to disable life1 or to chill harmony444444since such a power without the ,divine permission is inconceivable1 and admits the helplessness of this ,infinite ,mind against the majority of opinions dictated by mortal mind4 ,and the same woman writes3 ,in this volume of mine there are no contradictory statements 7p4 #cde74 ,christian ,science ,cures ,it is urged1 however1 that ,mrs4 ,eddy's teachings have been demonstrated to be true by the remarkable cures they have effected4 ,i need not question these cures4 ,i hope all of them are genuine4 ,i love humanity too well to wish that its ills were not cured at all rather than that they should be cured by ,christian ,science4 ,but when every claim is conceded1 all that will be proved is that ,christian ,science has cured some sick people4 ,of course it has4 ,i hope the ,christian ,scientists will be equally generous to admit that during the past thousands of years cures have been effected also by other agencies4 ,mohammedanism has cured the sick2 ,catholic saints have cured the sick2 holy places have performed cures--else why do multitudes go on pilgrimages to shrines8 ,patent medicines have helped the sick1 otherwise the inventors and vendors of them could not have made such big fortunes2 and the least tolerant ,christian ,scientist must admit that even physicians occasionally succeed in curing the sick4 ,evidently1 then1 ,mrs4 ,eddy is not the only healer2 which1 if admitted1 will prove that she has not performed any cures with her ism which others have not performed without it4 ,if it be said that other cures are cures only in name1 the same is said by unbelievers of ,christian ,science cures4 ,one objection balances the other4 ,christian ,science would be unique if it never failed to cure4 ,but as it fails in some cases from one cause or another1 and as it limits its practice to complaints which do not require a knowledge of surgery1 and1 again1 as it has never accomplished what the other agencies have failed to accomplish--restoring a lost limb1 for instance--it follows without the possibility of contradiction that it is at its best no more than any other human agency4 ,at a ,sunday morning meeting in ,san ,francisco1 as the audience was leaving1 a cripple in her invalid's chair was being wheeled out of the building4 ,stepping up to one of the ushers who seemed to possess considerable authority1 ,i asked why the cripple had been brought to the ,christian ,science meeting4 ,to be healed1 of course1 was the unhesitating reply4 ,but as she was being wheeled out in the same condition as she was in when wheeled into the meeting1 would it not follow1 ,i asked1 that she was not cured8 ,had the occasion permitted1 the ,christian ,science usher would have argued that one or two treatments are not always enough to effect a cure4 ,admitted4 ,but if ,divine science must have more than one chance to hit the mark1 how does it differ from human science8 ,to prove its ,divine origin1 ,christian ,science must meet the following conditions3 ,first1 it must cure diseases which all other agencies have pronounced incurable2 second1 it must never fail to cure2 third1 it must prove itself the only power that can cure4 ,not one of these conditions has been met by ,christian ,science4 ,it has failed to cure many2 it has not cured the incurables2 and other agencies have cured at least as many patients as has ,christian ,science4 ,in what respect1 then1 is ,mrs4 ,eddy's doctrine the absolute or the only truth8 ,christian ,science ,testimonials ,mrs4 ,eddy devotes one hundred pages of her ,science and ,health to testimonials from people who have used her nostrum1 very much as vendors of patent medicines are in the habit of doing4 ,but while1 as a rule1 testimonials in patent medicine books are signed in full1 those in ,science and ,health give only initials4 ,rheumatism1 hernia1 fibroid tumour1 insanity and epilepsy1 cancer and consumption1 ,bright's disease1 and many other diseases1 according to these testimonials1 have been quickly cured1 often by the mere reading of ,mrs4 ,eddy's book4 ,but there are equally numerous witnesses to prove that these same maladies have been cured by other equally fantastic remedies4 ,i do not feel myself under obligation1 however1 to take notice of these claims1 for the excellent reason that ,i am not bound to explain alleged facts1 but only real facts4 ,let the healers first prove that their patients had real cancer1 and that ,christian ,science cured them permanently1 and then ,i will consider their claims4 ,but some one might say3 ,i ought to be an authority on my own case4 ,every doctor had given me up2 ,i was told nothing could save me4 ,my disease was pronounced incurable1 yet ,i am now in the best of health through ,christian ,science4 ,if a person may be misinformed about others1 he may be about himself4 ,it is the most natural thing to imagine one's self sick or cured4 ,it is equally a matter of experience that doctors often fail to diagnose the case of a patient correctly4 ,their pronouncing any one incurable is not a final or infallible judgment4 ,before a miracle is claimed in the case of any patient it has to be shown1 by expert and disinterested testimony1 that the disease in question really existed1 that it was really incurable1 and that ,christian ,science really cured it4 ,but is such testimony forthcoming8 ,do healers invite investigation of their cures by outsiders8 ,in #ahih ,mrs4 ,eddy announced some miraculous performances4 ,i challenge the world to disprove1 she said1 what ,i hereby declare6 ,i healed malignant tubercular diphtheria and carious bones that could be dented in by the fingers4 ,i have healed at one visit a cancer that had so eaten the flesh of the neck as to expose the jugular vein so that it stood out like a cord4 ,who made the diagnosis8 ,how could a novice tell one disease from another8 ,if it was a physician's report ,mrs4 ,eddy is quoting1 who was the physician8 ,besides1 for ,mrs4 ,eddy to accept a doctor's verdict would be to put faith in medical science1 which1 according to her1 is no science at all4 ,neither does this ,divine practitioner give the name and the address of her patients4 ,who witnessed the treatment applied to the case she describes8 ,who pronounced the patient cured8 ,i hope ,mrs4 ,eddy cured all her cancer patients2 but a hope is not a proof1 nor is assertion an argument4 ,the only way to demonstrate a power is to submit to all the tests4 ,compare ,mrs4 ,eddy's story of how she cured an unnamed patient with the following accomplishment by a man of real science3 ,a remarkable case of curvature of the spine was announced at a ,philadelphia hospital4 ,the case was that of ,adele ,weinberg1 a young girl hunchback4 ,the surgeon removed part of one of the lumbar vertebr1 found it to be diseased1 and in its place used a section of leg bone4 ,she is as erect as though her spine had been normal from birth4 ,that operation took place in a hospital in ,philadelphia1 before nurses and assisting physicians1 who may be summoned as witnesses4 ,but ,mrs4 ,eddy mentions no witnesses whom we may interview in connection with the cancer cure she describes4 ,get-,well-,quick ,christian ,science1 instead of being either scientific or ,christian1 comes very near being1 and in fact is1 a sort of get-well-quick system1 suggestive of the get-rich-quick scheme of the speculating fraternity4 ,the gambler does not have to learn a trade or to build up a business in order to secure a footing in the commercial world1 or to establish a reputation for honesty and efficiency4 ,he does not depend upon these things for a living1 since the throw of a dice1 the colour of a card1 or a lucky bet may bring to him in a few minutes more than patient work can offer in years4 ,the ,christian ,science practitioner likewise does not have to study the human body1 the properties of drugs1 the nature of ansthetics or of antiseptics1 the germ theory of disease1 the effect of diet and climate upon the human organism1 the causes of epidemics1 the means of control of contagious maladies--nothing at all of this4 ,a few lessons in metaphysics1 a copy of ,mrs4 ,eddy's book1 and a number of texts on the tip of his tongue1 and he may begin practising and collecting fees from patients4 ,should a call come to the ,christian ,science healer in the middle of a cold1 wintry night1 he need not even rise out of bed1 much less walk or ride through the storm to see and examine his patient2 and if he should fall asleep while giving absent treatment1 who would be the wiser for it8 ,there is yet another close resemblance between the get-rich-quick and the get-well-quick systems4 ,what makes gambling attractive is the wealth there is in the world4 ,if labour did not create wealth1 there would be nothing to gamble with or to gamble for4 ,the gambler is a parasite4 ,he thrives on the labour of others4 ,in the same way1 the get-well-quick practitioner profits from the conquests of material science4 ,if the ,eddyites really desired to give a demonstration of their science1 they should go to those ,asiatic countries where sanitary measures are unknown where there are no facilities for the proper ventilation of dwellings or for personal cleanliness2 where the waters are impure1 the streets are foul1 the food insufficient1 the climate merciless2 where modern hygienic precautions are unknown2 where the cholera1 the black death1 or some other plague works unhindered1 and where there are no physicians to be sent for at the last hour4 ,let them1 ,i say1 work in such an environment to show what ,christian ,science can do4 ,but to operate in ,europe and ,america--where science1 like a watch dog1 is guarding the health of the people1 inventing a thousand devices for the comfort and security of life1 hurrying to the aid of the injured almost with the alacrity of thought1 building hospitals equipped with all the weapons which disease dreads1 and training men and women to march at any moment in full phalanx and armed to the teeth against the first plague germ that lands on our shores from foreign lands--is nothing to boast of4 ,indeed1 it is the progress of the physical sciences which has made the ,christian ,scientist's profession profitable4 ,divine healers eat of the golden fruits of the tree of science1 and then turn round and stone the tree4 ,christian ,science ,fashionable ,how1 then1 explain the remarkable growth of ,christian ,science8 ,but the imposing edifices1 the prosperous looking disciples1 the number of automobiles in front of their churches1 prove only that ,christian ,science is fashionable--that is all4 ,the question we are discussing is not ,is ,christian ,science fashionable1 but ,is it true8 ,does the rapid growth and wealth of ,mohammedanism1 for instance1 with its ,alhambra and ,alcazar1 its illustrious and extensive conquests1 prove its ,divine origin8 ,does the progress of ,mormonism1 which reared a great city as if by magic in the ,western wilderness1 prove ,mormonism to be of ,god8 ,the ,catholic ,church at one time owned everything in ,europe and ruled every one4 ,to her belonged all the wealth1 the culture1 the art1 and the power of ,christendom4 ,yet ,christian ,scientists do not consider the ,catholic ,church ,divine4 ,why should the rapid spread of one creed surprise us any more than that of another8 ,moreover1 it takes less courage to follow the crowd than to resist it4 ,the crowd picks up the weak and carries them along4 ,was it not ,horace ,walpole who said1 ,the greater the imposition the greater the crowd8 ,what ,matthew ,arnold said of the multitude in ,england is true also of the ,american multitude3 ,probably in no country is the multitude more unintelligent1 more narrow-minded1 and more passionate than in this4 ,in no country is so much nonsense so firmly believed4 ,alas1 that is true of the multitude in every country4 ,again1 the faith habit is an older heredity1 exerting upon us the accumulated force of thousands of years1 while the inquiry habit is too recent an acquisition to have much force upon the generality of peoples4 ,that is another explanation of the greater popularity of dogma1 which requires only belief1 and the comparative unpopularity of a movement which demands individual thinking4 ,superstition1 as ,goethe says1 is so intimately and anciently associated with man that it is one of the hardest things to get rid of4 ,the only progress most people are capable of is to part with one superstition for another4 ,the ,pope is given up for ,mrs4 ,eddy1 but the idea of an infallible teacher to tell us what to believe is not outgrown4 ,the keys of heaven and hell placed in the hands of the ,vicar of ,christ provoke scepticism in a ,christian ,scientist1 but he accepts without the shadow of a doubt the key to the ,scriptures delivered to ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,but how account for the presence of so many judges and lawyers among the converts of ,christian ,science8 ,and how account for the judges and lawyers who are not ,christian ,scientists8 ,it was not so long ago when judges condemned innocent women as witches1 and sentenced them to be tortured to death4 ,did that make witchcraft a fact1 or can it be quoted to justify the belief in witchcraft8 ,the late ,chief ,justice of the ,united ,states was a ,catholic4 ,what does that prove8 ,christian ,science and ,witchcraft ,without wanting to give offence1 ,i would say that ,christian ,science is1 in many respects1 the modern version of the witchcraft belief1 which smote ,new ,england some three or four hundred years ago4 ,if mental treatment can cure1 according to ,mrs4 ,eddy's admissions1 it can also kill4 ,over her own signature ,mrs4 ,eddy declares that her last husband was killed by poison mentally administered4 ,the devil possessed witches1 too1 were supposed to be able to injure and kill people mentally4 ,mrs4 ,eddy teaches that1 ,if the right mental practice can restore health1 it is self-evident that mental malpractice can impair health4 ,she also contends that a person may commit mental murder or mental assassination4 ,in the ,christian ,science ,journal of ,february1 #ahhi1 she demands that mental assassins be turned over to the executioner4 ,on ,may #ad1 #ahgh1 ,mrs4 ,eddy1 her attorney1 and some twenty witnesses1 appeared at the opening of the ,supreme ,judicial ,court in ,salem and practically accused a certain ,mr4 ,daniel ,harrison ,spoffard of sorcery and witchcraft4 ,mrs4 ,eddy's bill of complaint recited the injuries which ,spoffard was mentally1 and of course by absent treatment1 inflicting upon one of ,mrs4 ,eddy's students1 a ,miss ,lucretia ,brown1 and begged the ,court to restrain him from giving malicious mental treatment to said ,miss ,brown4 ,does not that suggest darkest ,africa8 ,let me give a few lines from ,mrs4 ,eddy's bill of complaint3-- ,by the power of his mind he 7,mr4 ,spoffard7 influences and controls the minds and bodies of other persons1 and uses his said power and art for the purpose of injuring the persons and property of others4 ,among the injuries ,mr4 ,spoffard has communicated to ,miss ,brown are severe spinal pains1 neuralgia1 temporary suspension of mind4 ,fortunately for the reputation of our courts1 ,judge ,gray dismissed the charges against ,mr4 ,spoffard1 declaring1 with a twinkle in his eye1 that it was not within the jurisdiction of the courts to control ,mr4 ,spoffard's mind4 ,had the ,judge been of ,mrs4 ,eddy's persuasion1 the old regrettable ,salem persecutions against so-called witches might have been revived4 ,how well has it been explained by ,john ,fiske that one of the most primitive shapes which the relation of cause and effect takes in the savage mind is the assumed connection between disease or death and some malevolent personal agency4 ,marriage and ,death in ,christian ,science ,let us now investigate some of the other teachings of ,mrs4 ,eddy1 which are at present more or less kept in the background1 or which are presented only to those who have become adepts or advanced students of the cult4 ,a careful perusal of ,mrs4 ,eddy's miscellaneous literature will show that she practically denies sex1 marriage1 birth1 death1 the home1 the family1 as well as education and morality4 ,it seems a serious accusation to bring against any one posing as a reformer or as the founder of a religion1 but the evidence warrants the charge4 ,has no one ever observed that ,christian ,science journals do not announce marriages1 births1 or deaths8 ,of course1 like other people1 ,christian ,scientists are born1 marry1 and die2 but no official recognition of such events is permitted4 ,there must be a reason for it4 ,in ,christian ,science there is no room for sex relations and for children1 even as there is no recognition of that other natural phenomenon1 death4 ,but do not ,mrs4 ,eddy's disciples die8 ,is not her body buried in a cemetery1 and marked by a monument raised over her remains by her admirers8 ,the explanation for this apparent contradiction between the profession and the practice1 from the ,christian ,science point of view1 is as follows3 ,every believer in ,mrs4 ,eddy's revelation is expected to demonstrate over death as over sickness2 and just as1 when a practitioner fails to demonstrate over sickness1 it is because of some error or belief somewhere1 and not because of the insufficiency of ,divine power1 likewise1 if a ,christian ,scientist dies1 it is because he has not applied the new doctrine rightly1 and not because the doctrine is not strong enough to prevent death4 ,this teaching really makes of death not a beneficent economy of nature1 but a crime1 or a miscarriage1 as it were1 of ,christian ,science4 ,in the ,state of ,michigan there is a religious sect called the ,house of ,david4 ,one of their doctrines is that a ,christian cannot die4 ,but1 ,i asked the man whom ,i was interviewing in ,michigan1 do not the members of your sect die like other people8 ,his answer was that they die only when they fall from grace4 ,in the same way1 if a ,christian ,scientist dies1 it is because he has departed from the truth as taught by ,mrs4 ,eddy1 or because some one has killed him mentally by malicious animal magnetism or mortal mind4 ,that was how1 ,mrs4 ,eddy asserts1 her husband was assassinated4 ,if one member of a family is a ,christian ,scientist and the treatment he receives from a practitioner does not cure him of the complaint1 the blame is liable to be thrown upon the non-,christian ,science members of the family1 who1 by resisting the operations of ,divine power1 prevent its manifestation4 ,it is witchcraft come back4 ,could anything be more inhuman than to hold an unbelieving parent responsible for the failure of ,christian ,science to save his child from an attack of typhus or scarlet fever after the practitioner has deprived the patient of the services of medical care and treatment8 ,but can a ,divine healer admit failure8 ,rather than confess defeat1 he will accuse the nearest relatives of the patient of malpractice4 ,i am sorry to conclude that at times ,christian ,science is as cowardly as it is cruel4 ,suffer it to ,be ,so ,now ,according to ,mrs4 ,eddy1 marriage1 like death1 suggests materiality1 and is therefore an error4 ,the words of ,jesus1 that in heaven they shall be like the angels who do not marry nor are given in marriage1 are quoted to prove that sex is an illusion of mortal mind4 ,of course1 the ,eddyites marry1 but only for the same reason that they die--because they are not sufficiently advanced in ,christian ,science to demonstrate over these errors4 ,in the ,christian ,science ,sentinel1 ,june #af1 #aijf1 and in the ,christian ,science ,journal1 ,july1 #aijf1 ,mrs4 ,eddy calls marriage legalized lust--this from a woman who had been three or four times married6 ,suffer it to be so now is the text quoted by ,christian ,scientists to defend their inconsistency4 ,but how long a time does the word now cover8 ,jesus1 in using the word now1 must have meant his own day1 which was nearly two thousand years ago4 ,but is it still now8 ,a now that lasts so long might just as well mean indefinitely4 ,suffer it to be so indefinitely would be the real meaning of the text as the ,eddyites interpret it4 ,accordingly1 when the ,christian ,science dispensation shall be in full swing1 marriage1 birth1 children1 the family1 as also sickness and death1 will be no more4 ,that will be1 ,i suppose1 when it is no longer now4 ,i have already quoted ,mrs4 ,eddy's belief in regard to sex3 ,gender is also a quality characteristic of mind1 and not of matter4 ,she will wink at marriages until it is learned that generation birth rests on no sexual basis4 ,i do not know what kind of reasoning led her to say3 ,to abolish marriage and maintain generation is possible in ,christian ,science4 ,are not such foolish as well as mischievous doctrines a menace to the community8 ,can a man1 can a woman1 believe in such absurdities without becoming unbalanced mentally sooner or later8 ,the ,new ,autocracy ,mrs4 ,eddy has banished all freedom of thought from her ,church1 as ,luther and ,calvin did from theirs4 ,christian ,science is as distinctly hostile to the liberty of teaching as were the dogmatists of the ,reformation4 ,in the ,christian ,science ,quarterly ,bible ,lessons definite instructions are given to read the following explanatory note before reciting the lesson-sermon3-- ,friends1--,the ,bible and the ,christian ,science ,text-book are our only preachers444 ,the canonical writings1 together with the word of our text-book1 corroborating and explaining the ,bible texts in their spiritual import and application to all ages1 past1 present1 and future1 constitute a sermon undivorced from ,truth1 uncontaminated and unfettered by human hypotheses1 and divinely authorized4 ,it is absolutely necessary to repeat this at every ,sunday meeting4 ,it will be seen from the formula imposed upon her followers that only ,mrs4 ,eddy's voice is tolerated in ,christian ,science churches4 ,but does she not also permit the reading of the ,bible8 ,only as she interprets it1 no other interpretation being allowed1 which makes the ,bible nothing more than a medium for ,mrs4 ,eddy's thought4 ,outside of her book all is contamination4 ,science and ,health and the book to which it is the key are alone ,divine1 everything else being human hypotheses which enslave and corrupt4 ,has the intellect of man ever been subjected to a greater pinch than that8 ,he who does not believe my doctrine is sure to be damned1 said ,luther 7,professor ,e4,m4 ,hulme1 ,the ,renaissance1 p4 #cfc74 ,will ,mrs4 ,eddy admit that there is any salvation outside her church1 or that there is any other infallible guide than her own ,science and ,health8 ,and just as both ,john ,calvin and ,martin ,luther called upon the civil authorities to draw the sword against heretics1 so ,mrs4 ,eddy repeatedly summoned the ,state to punish mental assassins4 ,where there is no freedom persecution is inevitable1 since there is no other effective way to suppress freedom4 ,it was the great ,swiss reformer1 ,beza1 who congratulated ,calvin on the burning of ,servetus3 ,to claim that heretics ought not to be punished is the same as saying that those who murder father and mother ought not to be punished1 seeing that heretics are infinitely worse than they4 ,mrs4 ,eddy1 nearly four hundred years later1 appealed to the courts in the ,united ,states to punish one ,richard ,kennedy1 a former disciple of hers1 for malicious animal magnetism1 and called upon the police to avenge the death of her husband by arresting the culprit who administered poison to him mentally4 ,oh1 why does not somebody kill him8 ,mrs4 ,eddy was heard to exclaim when she imagined herself the victim of the malpractice of one of her rivals4 ,in ,science and ,health1 chap4 vi1 p4 #ch1 #ahha edition1 ,mrs4 ,eddy1 writing of another of her dissenting disciples with all the theological fury of the ,dark ,ages1 calls him the ,nero of to-day444 he is robbing1 committing adultery1 and killing1 etc4 ,and on page #b1 in the same chapter1 she calls ,kennedy a moral leper1 to be shunned as the most prolific cause of sickness and sin4 ,listen to this language of ,love3-- ,behold6 thou criminal mental marauder1 that would blot out the sunshine of earth1 that would sever friends1 destroy virtue1 put out truth1 and murder in secret the innocent1 befouling thy track with the trophies of thy guilt4 ,then she predicts a hailstorm of doom upon the guilty head of ,daniel ,spoffard1 another of her former students 7,science and ,health1 #ahgh edition74 ,christian ,science shows many of the symptoms of the early stages of the ,protestant ,reformation4 ,justification by faith alone was the slogan of ,luther and his associates4 ,good works were not necessary at all4 ,salvation was a divine gift1 and all that the sinner had to do was to accept it4 ,doing was a deadly thing4 ,mrs4 ,eddy1 like another ,martin ,luther1 preached the doctrine of salvation and health by faith alone4 ,quit trying to get well by your own efforts and trust in ,divine ,mind was her ultimatum4 ,mrs4 ,eddy had no more use for sanitary measures or for self-help than the ,german reformers had for good works4 ,and just as ,mrs4 ,eddy taught that to resort to material means destroyed the patient's chances of being healed by ,christian ,science1 the ,lutherans declared that good works were prejudicial to salvation because they made man self-confident and boastful4 ,another resemblance between ,luther and ,mrs4 ,eddy is to be found in their common contempt for human science4 ,to ,luther the intellect was the devil's bride4 ,when he used stronger language he denounced reason as a whore4 ,he had no use for the universities1 and prayed to see them pulverized4 ,more than once he boasted openly that there was not a dogma of ,christianity that did not offend human reason4 ,but what is human reason worth8 ,what is it but1 as ,mrs4 ,eddy would reply1 mortal mind8 ,the founder of ,christian ,science showed even less respect for human intellect than did the reformers of the sixteenth century4 ,the words of ,erasmus1 the distinguished scholar of ,holland1 ,the triumph of the ,lutherans is the death of good learning1 could also be said of the followers of ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,the cause of culture1 of intellectual achievements1 of discovery1 of political and physical advancement1 is sure to be1 and is1 neglected by people who are too eager to demonstrate the wonders of metaphysics4 ,any movement which does not include the entire field of human knowledge is bound to be both narrow and sterile4 ,goethe believed that the ,lutheran doctrine1 which confined the world to one book1 upon the meaning of which no two interpreters agreed1 postponed the emancipation of the human intellect for a thousand years4 ,luther led the world out of the ,catholic darkness into the ,protestant fog4 ,of ,mrs4 ,eddy it could be said that she has brought her people out of the land of ,egypt into a pathless wilderness4 ,the ,menace of ,christian ,science ,imagine again what would happen to our educational system if it were to pass under the control of ,mrs4 ,eddy's party4 ,the majority of studies now pursued would be eliminated from the course4 ,no ,christian ,scientist would see the need of knowing anything about physiology1 anatomy1 chemistry1 biology1 botany1 geology1 or any of the fundamental physical sciences4 ,to teach these would be an admission of the reality of the material universe and a denial of the doctrine that all is illusion and error except ,divine mind4 ,but what would become of a nation reared in ignorance of the physical world and the laws which govern it8 ,industrially such a nation must slip to the bottom of the line1 leaving the commerce of the world in the hands of those who study and master the physical sciences4 ,the ,eddyites would not care1 since they are not interested in the material life1 and would be glad to demonstrate that it is possible to maintain life without food1 as it is possible to maintain generation without sex4 ,with the ,christian ,science dogma in force1 every book out of harmony with it would be excluded from our public libraries4 ,think you a ,christian ,science librarian1 if free to do as he thought best1 would permit the reading of books filled with mortal error1 the cause of disease and death1 and thereby postpone the coming of the kingdom of ,mrs4 ,eddy8 ,if to-day you can scarcely find a ,christian ,scientist who will read or hear anything opposed to his creed1 and if at present ,christian ,scientists allow in their churches only two books--the ,bible and the works of ,mrs4 ,eddy--are they going to allow more than two books in our schools1 libraries1 and homes1 should they acquire control of the government8 ,people think that ,eddyism is only a sort of drugless cure and no more2 on the contrary1 ,eddyism1 with its overemphasis on the divine is the sworn foe of everything human4 ,huxley has well said that modern civilization rests upon physical science4 ,take away her gifts1 and our country's position among the civilized nations of the world is gone to-morrow4 ,it is physical science that makes intelligence and morality stronger than brute force4 ,how splendidly true1 and how refreshing is common sense after so much nonsense6 ,the physical sciences are not the only studies which ,christian ,scientists will suppress should they come into power4 ,history1 ethics1 and the humanities will also be forbidden4 ,to a ,christian ,scientist the history of the centuries before ,mrs4 ,eddy's discovery is summed up in one word--error4 ,no ,christian ,scientist will teach the history of error--of illusion and mortal mind4 ,even the late ,world ,war was to them only an unreality4 ,there was1 according to ,mrs4 ,eddy's followers1 no war at all1 for war means disharmony1 and in ,god's universe there is room only for harmony4 ,it is true that young men of this faith went to war1 and some of them1 unfortunately1 were killed in battle4 ,nevertheless1 no ,christian ,scientist could be conscious of anything but harmony1 and therefore no ,christian ,scientist logically could write of the ,war or of any event in history which would necessitate the recognition of evil4 ,god himself1 who is perfect harmony1 did not know there was a war in ,europe1 said the committee on ,christian ,science publications in explaining the attitude of their ,church on the ,war4 ,christian ,science and ,morals ,morality1 too1 as a scientific study1 will be banished from the schools under ,eddyism4 ,in the ,infinite there is no more room for sin than there is for disease1 and1 since man is but the image of the ,infinite1 he is as free from sin as he is from disease4 ,mrs4 ,eddy practically denies the possibility of sin in ,christian ,science4 ,at the age of fifty-six1 on ,january #a1 #ahgg1 ,mrs4 ,eddy contracted a new marriage1 this time with ,mr4 ,asa ,g4 ,eddy1 giving her age as forty1 as shown by her marriage licence4 ,with a gesture ,mrs4 ,eddy swept aside the charge that she had suppressed the truth about her age1 and justified the misrepresentation on metaphysical grounds4 ,in her ,science and ,health1 pp4 #bde-f1 she asserts that a woman could not age while believing herself to be young4 ,eternity1 according to her1 has nothing to do with chronology1 and time-tables of birth and death are so many conspiracies against manhood and womanhood4 ,never record ages1 she advises4 ,but if it makes no difference to a ,christian ,scientist how old or how young she is1 so far as the number of years is concerned1 why did ,mrs4 ,eddy under-state her age8 ,in pretending to be younger than she really was did she not show her fear of advancing years8 ,perhaps ,mrs4 ,eddy also believed that truth as well as time had lost all claims upon ,christian ,scientists4 ,to change a lie into a truth1 all that is necessary is to deny that time-tables and calendars have any meaning to the believer in eternity4 ,one could even commit murder and deny that a bullet or a knife could possibly deprive a man1 who is all mind1 of his life4 ,mrs4 ,eddy and her book1 ,i suppose1 will be about all the protection we shall have against the lightning1 the storm1 or the cold1 or against hunger1 ignorance1 and crime4 ,it is not difficult to imagine the kind of world this would be when stripped of everything but ,mrs4 ,eddy's inspired metaphysics4 ,in the ,state of ,washington the ,christian ,scientists1 as soon as they had acquired sufficient political power to do it1 abolished the law requiring the medical inspection of children in the public schools4 ,but who will be the greatest sufferers from this foolish ordinance8 ,the children1 of course3 the pupils afflicted with defective vision or throat and nose maladies will be deprived of the benefits of human knowledge and experience4 ,their prayer for better sight1 for freer breathing and unhampered speech1 will remain unheeded1 upon the plea that sight1 hearing1 and speech are of the ,mind1 and that bodily obstructions cannot interfere with them4 ,the ,washington state law abolishing the physical examination of public-school children gives us an idea of what to expect under a metaphysical government4 ,and under ,christian ,science who1 for example1 will care for the deaf and dumb unfortunates in the community8 ,material science1 seconded by human sympathy1 has greatly helped to rob deafness and dumbness of more of their power to discourage and depress4 ,i have met deaf people who were so well trained to read the movement of the lips as to be able to converse freely4 ,what will ,christian ,science do for these unfortunates8 ,has it ever taken thought of them8 ,and has ,christian ,science ever planned or built homes for crippled children--the poor little ones who cannot walk or move without pain8 ,and what has metaphysics ever done in the fight against the white plague8 ,has it made a single discovery1 or given a new weapon to man against any of the evils human flesh is heir to8 ,with this ,asiatic superstition or fatalistic belief1 masquerading as ,christian and scientific1 in control of our institutions1 all sanitary laws1 such as the pure food law1 the law requiring the fumigation of houses or the isolation of their inmates suffering from contagious diseases1 the laws requiring the inspection of ships from plague-ridden ports1 those requiring fireproof public buildings or providing for fire escapes and a hundred other safety-first measures1 will receive scant attention4 ,to see and fight evil is wiser than to shut our eyes to it4 ,the rose is no more real than the thorns which guard it4 ,the tear is as natural as the smile1 and equally divine4 ,to be able to suffer for those we love1 and for a cause we prize1 is a privilege4 ,christian ,science robs people of the feeling of sympathy1 without which man and marble become alike4 ,but sympathy is born of the consciousness that there are pain and suffering1 evil and error1 in the world4 ,cognizance of evil is not permitted to a ,christian ,scientist4 ,being in ,nirvana himself1 the disciple of ,mrs4 ,eddy neither sees nor feels1 or at least he pretends not to see or feel1 the sorrow that draws the tear4 ,are there not times when1 as the poet ,hood in his ,ode to ,melancholy says1 the genuine tear is nobler than the artificial smile8 ,oh1 give her1 then1 her tribute just1 ,her sighs and tears and musings holy6 ,there is no music in the life ,that sounds with idiot laughter solely4 ,christian ,science makes people happy is an argument often advanced4 ,no doubt it does4 ,but we are not discussing ,is ,christian ,science ,comforting8 but ,is it true8 ,ignorance is bliss1 it has been said2 but does that prove that ignorance should be cultivated and knowledge suppressed8 ,i met a young woman just the day before her mother's funeral who behaved as if she and the woman who had borne her1 nursed her1 carried her in her arms1 who had watched day and night over her cradle and risked her life for her a hundred times1 were total strangers4 ,the young woman was a ,christian ,scientist4 ,eliminate the sympathy which consciousness of a struggling and suffering world inspires1 and art1 literature1 poetry1 morality1 and the humanities wither like a branch deprived of the quickening sap4 ,jesus was called the man of sorrows4 ,could he have been a ,christian ,scientist8 ,jesus wept is written in the ,gospel of ,john4 ,sorrow and tears are heresies to the perpetually smiling followers of ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,let us have men and women who fear neither the thorn nor the tear1 but who use them as stepping-stones to greater strength4 ,the way to meet evil is to grapple with it soldier-like4 ,man is not an ostrich1 and burying one's head in the sand is a coward's policy4 ,to live is to act1 and to act is to combat4 ,but darkness cannot be overcome with jargon4 ,to conquer we need the weapons of ,prometheus--knowledge and courage6
