him acquainted with hardships1 and fitted him to have warm sympathy for those who struggled against obstacles and trials4 ,he was graduated from ,yale ,college in #ahfc4 ,during his college course his attention was often turned to the field for ,christian work1 then being opened in the ,south by the steady advance of our armies1 and his sympathies were strongly enlisted for a race just coming out of the prison house of bondage1 and he was ambitious to have a part in laying the foundations of a new and better society in the regions desolated by war4 ,he was appointed an officer of the ,freedman's ,bureau in #ahfg1 with charge of the schools opened under its auspices in the ,state of ,georgia1 which position he held for three years1 until the closing of that branch of the work of the government4 ,his great work1 however1 was in connection with ,atlanta ,university1 an institution for higher education1 whose foundation he was active in securing1 and over whose interests he presided until the day of his death4 ,he labored for its welfare and that of the people in whose interests it was established with rare devotion1 and rejoiced in its steady growth and prosperity with special personal gratification4 ,owing to some peculiar circumstances the institution early secured the favorable attention of the ,state authorities1 and an annual appropriation from the ,state treasury4 ,in the endeavors to secure and confirm this grant he was conspicuously and honorably active1 and during the many years of its continuance his relations to the officers of the ,state with whom he has thus been brought into contact have been exceptionally pleasant1 and in some cases cordial4 ,during the last year of his life he took great interest in the successful opening of an industrial department in the institution1 and for the last few weeks his great anxiety had been to secure the furnishing of a large new building whose erection he had personally overlooked4 ,he had returned to ,atlanta in advance of his family to make preparations for the school year soon to open1 had completed most of his plans1 and seemed in unusual good health and spirits4 ,soon after dinner on ,friday1 ,sept4 #be1 feeling dizzy while in his own house1 where he was alone1 he sought the open air and walked toward the house of ,professor ,bumstead1 but becoming alarmed by increasing the maturity of his powers and the midst of his usefulness1 one of the earliest and most efficient of that great company who have toiled since the war in this broad and needy field4 ,his departure seems like a translation2 being taken suddenly without the pains and anxieties of wasting sickness1 in the full tide of his greatest success1 before any impairment of vigor or any calamity had overtaken the work he loved so well4 ,he was a man of great power over other men1 especially over young people1 who were caught up by his enthusiasm1 and borne along sometimes to the attainment of surprising results4 ,he was well fitted to be a leader in the sphere he chose for himself1 and made his mark upon his generation1 and had a large and honorable share in securing the results already achieved1 which are to bless the ,state and nation with increasing power4 ,a good man has fallen1 and a great gap is made in the ranks of laborers at the front2 but the ,lord who loves his own cause ,there the tribes--,dakota tribes--met together for their annual autumn feast--the missionary conference on the #bdth of ,september4 ,on the ,sabbath the little church was too small1 and #djj ,indians1 with a sprinkling of white people1 sat outside in the sun1 some on benches1 and most on the grass1 around the ,communion table4 ,the tents of those who had come in from long distances were pitched on either side in the ravines1 among the fall foliage1 and the wide brown plain1 with a long gleam of shining lake far off1 lay below4 ,as we took the bread and hid our faces in our hands1 we thought of that distribution by ,galilee1 when they sat in companies on the grassy slope by the lake4 ,it was not the touch of a vanished hand and the sound of a voice that is still1 but the real presence of ,him who said ,i am the bread of life1 to these #djj ,christian ,indians whom ,he had brought up from the low1 dead level of barbarism to the present heights of ,christian life4 ,one little dark baby in a white dress was baptized1 and four young people publicly confessed their faith in a newly-found ,saviour4 ,solomon1 ,his ,own ,grandfather1 who has gathered a church of the ,dakota refugees from the ,minnesota troubles of #ahfb1 over in ,manitoba1 spoke to us of the spiritual nature of ,god's kingdom2 and ,ehnamani1 who years ago laid down his warrior weapons1 administered the bread1 telling us of the tribulation and fire through which ,christ went to become bread for our life4 ,then the beloved ,john1 our brother missionary who threw his young strength into the ,dakota work at its darkest hour twenty-five years ago1 could hardly control the emotion with which he spoke of the trials out of which the ,dakotas had been brought to this present joy and strength through ,his stripes4 ,it has been a long ascent for fifty years1 but now fourteen churches1 with a thousand members2 eleven young men's ,christian associations2 a native missionary society1 receiving contributions amounting this year to #a1afe1 much of it the fruit of hard labor by ,dakota women1 with the needle and at the wash-tub2 a ,christian community with its own native justices of the peace1 rigidly enforcing temperance and marital law1 and1 according to the testimony of the ,united ,states agent on the ground1 more careful of religious observances than white communities1 and no less exemplary in morals2 thousands of acres of cultivated land2 these are some of the outward signs of the inner life of ,god in the heart4 ,add to this the #a1jjj or more converts gathered in later years and claimed by ,episcopalians and ,roman ,catholics2 add the long roll of those who have ascended to their ,lord2 add the white people who have been saved and inspired by the example of their ,dakota brethren1 and compute if you can the spiritual fruit of the ,dakota ,indian ,mission4 ,then think of this result wrought out1 in the midst of what is fast becoming one of the most influential communities of our land4 ,christian churches by hundreds1 ,christian colleges and ,christian homes1 all built on this early ,indian work as a foundation4 ,then1 as we rejoice in the present interest in work for ,indians1 remember the obloquy and opposition of the past through which the early workers struggled4 ,to appreciate this ascent1 one should come up from ,western ,indian barbarism1 and not down from ,eastern culture4 ,leave the nightly drumming and dancing and revelry1 the daily offering to heathen gods1 the daily wailing and cutting of the flesh at the scaffold of sepulture1 and one will acknowledge that ,god alone has wrought this change4 ,before the regular sessions of the conference a theological institute occupied two days4 ,this was attended by some thirty pastors and leading members of the churches4 ,there were lectures on ,bible history1 on family relations1 on preaching and pastoral work4 ,then the general meeting opened with a hymn written for the occasion by the organist1 a young ,indian1 and the singing was led by native young men4 ,the topics at the conference were such as the education of children1 the missionary cause2 and the one that seemed to call out most discussion was1 ,how to secure the spiritual growth of the ,church4 ,the young men showed great interest in their ,christian associations1 and voted to affiliate with their kindred in the white communities1 of whom they heard through the ,rev4 ,mr4 ,williams1 who represented the ,christian association of the young men of ,minneapolis4 ,the ,indian women1 too1 had their missionary meeting1 and show the same traits and give evidence of the same activity and zeal that make their white sisters the main strength of the ,christian ,church4 ,so we bid all take heart1 and go on upward--iyakaptapi4 ,c4 ,l4 ,,hall4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,indians ,,in ,,the ,,dakota ,,association4 ,this is an ecclesiastical body of a hundred churches that has the opportunity to show the unity of the spirit in race fellowship4 ,besides the local ,german ,association1 one of the five belonging to it1 the ,indian ,mission churches and pastors of the ,santee ,agency and of ,fort ,sully1 with their superintendents1 ,revs4 ,alfred ,l4 and ,thomas ,m4 ,riggs1 are among the members4 ,at the recent annual meeting1 held at ,huron1 ,september #agth to #bjth1 there were present the ,riggs brothers1 three lady missionaries1 and two female and four male ,indians4 ,the service of ,rev4 ,a4 ,l4 ,riggs1 as moderator1 was justly commended for its urbanity and promptness4 ,at the meeting of the ,woman's ,missionary ,society1 held with the mixed assembly1 the two ,indian women1 ,estelle ,ward and ,ellen ,spotted ,bear1 were brought forward1 in their usual white woman's garb1 to make talks1 which were interpreted by ,mrs4 ,t4 ,m4 ,riggs4 ,during some discussion upon ,indian work1 the ,riggs brothers supplemented their remarks by addresses from ,frank ,frazier and ,stephen ,yellow ,hawk1 a deacon and a pastor4 ,at the ,communion1 on the ,lord's ,day1 this deacon was associated with three white men in distributing the elements4 ,at the final meeting1 on ,sunday night1 with a crowded house1 between the addresses of ,rev4 ,drs4 ,jos4 ,b4 ,clark and ,jos4 ,e4 ,roy were sandwiched two hymns1 sung by the natives and their teachers1 and also an address by the dignified pastor at the ,santee ,agency1 ,rev4 ,artemas ,ehnamani1 interpreted by ,rev4 ,a4 ,l4 ,riggs4 ,this1 and the talks of the other ,indians1 reported their former condition as heathen and their coming to the light through their missionaries4 ,particularly touching was the allusion of ,pastor ,ehnamani to the sainted men1 ,drs4 ,williamson and ,riggs4 ,all showed the one spirit1 that of the common ,redeemer4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,lake ,,mohonk ,,conference4 ,on the #fth1 #gth and #hth of ,october the third annual meeting of the ,lake ,mohonk ,conference was held4 ,hon4 ,albert ,k4 ,smiley and ,mrs4 ,smiley1 as usual1 extended the hospitality of their magnificent mountain retreat to the friends of the ,indian4 ,the sessions of the conference were of great interest4 ,eminent men and women read historical and suggestive papers1 and ably discussed the great questions of the ,indian problem4 ,the conference1 after much earnest debate1 were unanimous in recommending such legislation by ,congress as will give allotments of land in severalty to the ,indians--the sale of lands not required for occupancy1 and funding of proceeds therefor for their benefit--the early discontinuance of rations and annuities1 increased educational facilities1 including industrial and especially agricultural1 and the dispersion and diffusion of the ,indians among the other people of the country1 with all the rights and immunities of other citizens4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,thirty-,,ninth ,,annual ,,report ,,of ,,the ,,executive ,,committee4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,general ,,survey4 ,this ,association by its chartered rights is authorized to go anywhere that it finds people destitute of ,gospel privileges4 ,limitation of means and coperation with other societies may compel it to a narrower sphere than the demands call for2 but this is the principle that underlies the ,association's organization1 and that has characterized all its historic development4 ,the work is at present confined to this country4 raised up in our own institutions at the ,south4 ,the average membership of these churches is #fa4 ,total additions for the year1 #a1abg1 of which1 on confession of faith1 #hhc4 ,raised for church purposes1 #ab1cid4gh2 for benevolence1 #a1fbe4hf4 ,the evangelist1 ,rev4 ,j4 ,c4 ,fields1 accompanied by his wife1 who aids him by song1 has continued his service through the year4 ,he has labored at ,louisville2 in our three churches at ,nashville2 at ,meridian1 ,jackson and ,greenville1 ,miss42 and at ,athens1 ,tecumseh1 ,montgomery1 ,marion1 ,selma1 ,talladega1 ,birmingham1 ,ironton and ,shelby ,iron ,works1 ,ala4 ,as a result1 between seven and eight hundred souls were hopefully led to ,christ1 and about one half of them gathered into our churches2 while other denominations shared in the precious harvest4 ,at several of the places visited1 the religious interest assumed marvelous power4 ,at ,marion there were #ee who professed ,christ1 the work spreading from our church into the ,state ,normal school located there4 ,two-thirds of the converts were young men1 ranging from fifteen to twenty years of age1 who gave themselves earnestly to prayer and labor for the conversion of their comrades4 ,a little girl1 eight years old1 was the first of a family to accept ,christ4 ,her mother followed4 ,the father1 a drunkard1 through the persuasion of friends1 visited the church for the first time4 ,when opportunity was given those desiring salvation to express their desire1 the little child crossed over to where her father was1 and begged him to come4 ,he did not that evening1 but a few nights later he yielded and gave his heart to the ,saviour4 ,it is a custom among the colored people to give the hand of welcome to those who have made up their minds to become ,christians2 and we can well believe1 as an eye-witness describes1 it was a beautiful as well as a touching scene when this little girl stepped forward to welcome father and mother on the ,lord's side4 ,at ,talladega ,college there were #aaf conversions1 including every inmate of the ladies' hall1 and1 with a single exception1 every boy in the ,stone ,hall4 ,the meetings1 as distinctively revival1 had to come to a close for lack of material upon which to work1 and take the form of praise and thanksgiving unto ,god for the marvelous display of ,his grace4 ,it was a literal fulfillment of the ,divine promise to pour out a blessing that there should not be room enough to receive it4 ,at ,selma there were #cjj who confessed their ,saviour4 ,gray-haired men1 grandmothers1 men and women in the prime of life1 youth and children1 were among the converts4 ,the most glorious work of grace1 writes ,pastor ,curtis1 it has ever been my privilege to see4 ,revivals have also been enjoyed in the ,central ,church and ,straight ,university1 ,new ,orleans2 in the ,tougaloo ,university1 where nearly all the students were led to ,christ2 at ,new ,iberia1 ,la41 where1 under the labors of the pastor1 fifty-nine were brought into church fellowship2 in the ,first and ,university churches1 ,atlanta1 and at several other places4 ,it has been a year of marked religious interest and progress nearly all over the field4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,educational ,,work ,,south4 ,,statistics4 ,chartered ,institutions #f ,normal and ,graded ,schools #ad ,common ,schools #cf ,instructors #bej ,pupils #h1hbc ,classifying the students1 we have3 ,theological1 #if2 ,law1 #fg2 ,college1 #eb2 ,college ,preparatory1 #aac2 ,normal1 #had2 ,grammar1 ,intermediate and ,primary1 #g1fha4 ,the resignation during the year of ,professor ,salisbury1 ,superintendent of our school work1 and the transfer to ,chicago of ,dr4 ,roy1 ,superintendent of our church work at the ,south1 raised the question whether1 in view of the system to which these brethren had reduced the work of their respective fields1 the two departments might not be consolidated and their care assigned to one man4 ,with much hesitation it was decided to try the experiment4 ,rev4 ,c4 ,j4 ,ryder1 of ,medina1 ,o41 has been selected to take the new position1 and has entered upon its duties4 ,his headquarters will be at ,cincinnati1 from which point1 by reason of its central location and excellent railroad facilities1 the whole field will be easily accessible4 ,we regretfully part with ,professor ,salisbury4 ,the three years of his service have been very valuable to our work1 and it is largely because of this service we are permitted to report that our schools were never before so well organized nor so efficient as now4 ,the exhibit of our schools in the ,world's ,exposition at ,new ,orleans attracted much attention from visitors4 ,the ,new ,orleans papers spoke of it in very complimentary terms4 ,descriptions of it were written and widely published in the newspapers all over the country4 ,president ,hitchcock1 of ,straight ,university1 ,rev4 ,s4 ,e4 ,lathrop and several of our colored students1 took charge successively of the exhibit1 and were on hand to answer questions regarding the ,american ,missionary ,association1 its schools and its work4 ,a large number of pamphlets and tracts were distributed4 ,representatives from every ,state in the ,union1 and from nearly every nation on the face of the earth1 dropped in to learn the object-lesson the exhibit taught of what ,christian education had done for the ,indian and the ,negro4 ,at ,midway1 ,ga41 an additional building has been erected for the ,dorchester ,academy4 ,the ,storrs ,school1 ,atlanta1 by the sale of bullets dug from the battlefields around the city1 realized enough to secure a much-needed kindergarten building4 ,mrs4 ,f4 ,l4 ,allen1 of ,waterbury1 ,conn41 has donated us a property in ,quitman1 ,ga41 containing three acres of land1 on which stands a hotel building1 nearly new and thoroughly furnished1 to be used as a school for girls4 ,the ladies of the ,first and ,second ,congregational churches of ,waterbury promptly seconded ,mrs4 ,allen's gift by raising #a1jjj to make the necessary alterations to put the building in order for the school1 and the ladies of the ,congregational churches of the ,state have so far responded to an appeal for them to assume the support of the school1 that it starts out with an assurance of success from the beginning4 ,rev4 ,j4 ,h4 ,parr1 formerly of the ,tillotson ,institute1 is to have the school in charge4 ,we have not been able to spend much money this year in brick and mortar4 ,we have been obliged to put our funds almost exclusively into the more practical work of mind and character building4 ,fisk ,university celebrated its twentieth anniversary this year by graduating from its college course fifteen1 two of the number being young ladies4 ,this makes #eb who have been graduated from ,fisk4 ,the ,superintendent of ,public ,instruction for the ,state of ,tennessee1 several ,state officials1 many ,senators and ,representatives attended the ,commencement exercises and alumni dinner4 ,a series of speeches in commendation of the good work done at the institution were made by these gentlemen1 who bore testimony to the high standing of the ,fisk students as teachers and citizens throughout the ,state4 ,of the #cg graduates previous to the class of this year1 the record shows that #bd of them are principals and teachers in different schools2 #e are pastors of churches2 #a is a missionary in ,africa under the ,american ,board2 #b are practicing lawyers2 #b are studying for the professions--#a in a theological1 the other in a medical school2 #a is a member of the ,tennessee ,legislature2 and #b1 who were teachers1 have died4 ,its roll numbers #dbg1 including representatives of #ba ,states and #a ,territory4 ,talladega ,college has had #cfe students4 ,this was more than it could comfortably care for4 ,the girls' hall was crowded4 ,some applicants had to be refused for lack of room4 ,the new ,cassidy ,school building1 having been used by over #bjj pupils1 continues to justify its right to be4 ,prosperity has marked the life of this college in all its departments4 ,atlanta ,university maintains its well-earned reputation for school work of the highest order2 #big students have shared its privileges4 ,colonel ,l4 ,w4 ,avery1 ,chairman of the ,state ,board of ,visitors1 in his report last year1 was so emphatic and strong in his praise of what he had seen and heard at the ,university1 that the other members of the ,board would not believe him1 and he was compelled to modify his praises before they would accept his report4 ,this year the whole ,board was present at the examinations1 and the result is that they have every one been converted1 and are now ready to go even farther than the ,colonel in testifying that the proficiency attained in the scholastic results has been simply astonishing4 ,the ,university continues to receive the annual appropriation of #h1jjj from the ,state--a fact that is all significant respecting the undeniable worth of the school4 ,tougaloo ,university1 located on the ,illinois ,central ,r4 ,r41 about eight miles north of ,jackson1 the capital of ,mississippi1 receives ,state aid to the amount of #c1jjj annually4 ,two hundred and sixteen students last year have taxed its utmost capacity for accommodation4 ,governor ,lowry and the ,state ,board of ,visitors attended the commencement exercises1 and were surprised at the evidence of the ,negro's capacity for education4 ,four students took degrees in the elementary ,normal course that requires ten years to complete it1 and one took the degree from the higher ,normal course1 to complete which requires twelve years4 ,straight ,university1 ,new ,orleans1 notwithstanding the devastation of floods and the failure of cotton crops that last year so severely affected the very limited finances of the colored people of ,louisiana1 was filled with students at the beginning of the school year1 and continued not only crowded1 but overcrowded to the end2 #ehd scholars were enrolled1 including representatives from ,cuba1 ,honduras1 ,new ,mexico1 ,texas1 ,florida1 ,mississippi1 ,alabama1 ,illinois1 and even ,old ,england4 ,tillotson ,institute1 ,texas1 has also had a very crowded and successful year4 ,this is the youngest of our chartered schools4 ,it has the modesty that in every way is becoming the youngest member of the family1 but in all that is excellent in work it stands not a whit behind the oldest and the best4 ,it has already outgrown the comfortable limits of its habitation4 ,the crowding process has struck it1 and its cry for relief is growing sharper and sharper4 ,we shall have to heed its cry one of these days4 ,the great and rapidly-growing ,state of ,texas challenges our forethought and our care4 ,the ,state ,superintendent of ,public ,instruction1 ,hon4 ,b4 ,m4 ,baker1 was present at the commencement exercises1 and after commending the teachers for their faithful work and testifying that the best teachers of the colored schools in ,texas were graduates of the ,tillotson ,institute1 he publicly thanked the people of the ,north for the establishment and maintenance of the school4 ,judge ,fullmore1 a county school superintendent1 who was also present1 not only indorsed all that ,mr4 ,baker had said1 but added that in his appointments of teachers he always gave ,tillotson graduates the preference1 and that a certificate of graduation from ,tillotson in the hands of an applicant was all the evidence of character and ability he needed4 ,were we to continue sketching the salient points in the work of our other schools scattered all over the ,south1 it would be simply to give fresh illustrations of the five facts already made prominent--crowded schools1 growing necessities1 faithful work1 good results and outside commendation4 ,as compared with last year1 the statistics in our school work show a falling off of two chartered institutions and seven common schools4 ,on its face1 this looks like loss2 in reality1 it is gain4 ,the two chartered institutions dropped out of our statistics are ,berea and ,hampton1 that1 as a matter of fact1 have been for several years self-sustaining and independent1 and which1 as formerly fostered by us1 we have hitherto reported2 they are still in the field1 doing a greater work than ever1 while the seven common schools1 dropped because they ceased to be needed where they were located1 are more than represented in the better work of the other schools1 to strengthen which the money thus set free has been transferred4 ,we are steadily but slowly coming to the realization of the idea that was the inspiration of the ,american ,missionary ,association's school system--,christian colleges and ,normal schools for the training of leaders1 and ,christian preparatory schools to furnish them with the right kind of material4 ,the ,south is year by year1 as its financial ability increases and its public sentiment improves1 doing more for the rudimental instruction of its children4 ,it is the duty of the ,state to provide elementary education for every child within its borders1 and to that point the ,southern ,states must one day come2 but just in proportion as they come to that point1 the necessities for our work increase4 ,the demand for ,christian teachers and preachers and professional men in all ranks at the ,south will grow as facilities for the elementary education of the children multiply4 ,our aim is not only to save the land from ignorance1 but to save it from godless intelligence4 ,infidelity is as much the enemy of free institutions as ignorance2 and when the children are intelligent1 an ignorant leadership is almost as effective as an infidel leadership to raise up an infidel people2 so that1 as intelligence spreads among the youth of the ,south1 we are placed under accumulating obligations1 by virtue of our loyalty to the kingdom of our ,lord1 and by virtue of our interest in the perpetuity of republican institutions1 to strengthen1 enlarge and multiply this work4 ,of course1 just now1 and for a great many years to come1 by far the greater part of our school work must be in the lower grades of instruction4 ,so long as it can be said1 that in the ,southern ,states eighty per cent4 of the colored and thirty per cent4 of the white population are illiterate2 that there are not educational facilities enough to furnish fifty per cent4 of the children with even a chance to learn their letters2 that there are whole communities and sections in which there are no schools whatever2 that there are thousands and tens of thousands of children and youth who would be glad to go to school did they have opportunity2 so long we must continue to furnish elementary instruction in all our schools1 and as far as possible to open such small schools as may meet the present but transient exigency1 to be dropped1 as we have the seven common schools above referred to1 when1 from whatever cause1 the necessity for them has passed away4 ,the ,executive ,committee desires to emphasize and to have the constituents of the ,american ,missionary ,association keep it constantly before them1 that as the cause and means of popular education extend in the ,south1 the necessity for the work of the ,association becomes stronger and stronger4 ,as seen from this stand-point1 the desirability of bringing our larger institutions as speedily as possible1 where they shall be able to take care of themselves1 becomes clear and urgent4 ,they should be at once so far endowed that the question of their permanence as conservators of the supremacy of ,christian leadership in the thought1 character and life of the people should be settled beyond peradventure for all time4 ,we commend these schools to the special regard of those who are looking about to invest money where1 in the name of the ,lord1 it will yield rich and enduring returns4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,industrial ,,training4 ,schools in which industries are taught #af ,special industrial teachers #aj ,teachers combining industrial with other work #ba ,industrial teaching is made prominent at ,santee1 ,oahe1 at all of our chartered institutions1 at ,le ,moyne ,institute1 ,memphis1 ,tenn41 ,lewis ,high ,school1 ,macon1 ,ga41 and incidentally at six other schools4 ,aid has been received from the ,slater ,fund for this work at ,macon1 ,atlanta1 ,nashville1 ,tougaloo1 ,talladega1 ,memphis and ,austin4 ,nearly all the scholars in attendance pursue some of the branches of industry taught4 ,housekeeping1 cooking1 dress-making1 care of the sick1 agriculture1 blacksmithing1 harness-making1 type-setting and printing are made prominent1 according to the conveniences at hand4 ,atlanta1 ,talladega and ,tougaloo have farms which are worked by the students under the instruction of practical farmers4 ,at several other points farming could be successfully taught if only we had the farms1 and we could have the farms if only we had the money4 ,for the teaching of the trades we need special buildings4 ,progress has been made in this direction4 ,atlanta ,university has erected ,the ,knowles ,industrial ,building1 a memorial of the late ,mr4 ,l4 ,j4 ,knowles1 of ,worcester1 ,mass41 whose widow not long before her death appropriated #f1jjj for this object4 ,it is a brick building #ajj by #dd feet1 with two stories and a basement1 and1 for its use1 is one of the finest in the ,south4 ,at ,macon1 a two-story building has been constructed--the upper story for the ,lewis ,library and the lower for a carpenter shop4 ,at ,talladega has been also built a two-story structure1 the upper story to be used for carpentry and the lower for blacksmithing4 ,the citizens of ,memphis two years ago gave ,professor ,steele #a1jjj to put a girl's industrial department into the ,le ,moyne school1 and now they have pledged him #fjj more to secure a workshop for the boys4 ,fort ,berthold in ,dakota and ,fisk and ,straight ,universities at the ,south greatly need industrial buildings1 and there are other schools of which the same might be said with equal emphasis4 ,it is difficult to overestimate the importance of industrial training4 ,latest in development in connection with our schools1 it may yet prove first in value4 ,labor is heaven-ordained4 ,it is the chief instrumentality through which a people are elevated4 ,grace saves the soul and transforms character instantly4 ,it makes the savage and sinner kind and good instantly2 but it will not instantly make him a good farmer1 a skilled mechanic1 a trained scholar4 ,up from the lowest to the highest1 man must toil patiently and laboriously4 ,nature will tolerate neither jumps nor deceptions4 ,it is no kindness to put a man where he is out of place1 and still less is it a kindness to make him believe that he has a right to be there4 ,he who climbs up into position or who is foisted into it by any other instrumentality than by the toil necessary to fit him for the position1 the same is a thief and a robber4 ,the police forces of ,nature will speedily put him under arrest4 ,the judicial forces of ,nature will soon cast him into a prison1 out of which he shall not come until beginning at the bottom1 by diligent labor1 he is willing to pay the last farthing at every step in the process of his advancement4 ,the implements and the products of industry are the gauges of civilization4 ,between the roughly-hewn stone hatchet and the finely-polished steel axe lies all the history of the world's progress4 ,the college1 the library1 the fine residence and the factory of modern civilization are at one end of the line1 the other end of which starts from the dug-out and the hut4 ,man1 in the highest estate1 forget or ignore it as he may1 has that in him which connects him with the lowest1 and labor1 the hard labor of his ancestors1 extending through the ages as well as his own1 has been the means of bringing him where he is4 ,if the ,indian and the negro are to be elevated1 they must rise by the same steps as have others4 ,they must work their way up4 ,but they who are above them1 remembering the pit out of which they themselves have been dug1 must give them a chance to rise1 and help them as they try to rise4 ,that they have the capacity for elevation along every line of human development has been abundantly proved over and over again4 ,the industrial exhibit of the colored people at the recent ,centennial ,exposition in ,new ,orleans1 was in every way gratifying to their friends4 ,though these people are only #bj years out of the house of their #bej years' bondage1 antedated by millenniums of barbarism1 they sent articles showing their progress in the industries that more than filled the entire gallery assigned them in one end of the immense ,government building4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,mountain ,,work4 ,this work has gone forward the past year with marked success4 ,in ,kentucky1 ,rev4 ,j4 ,t4 ,ford1 having taken the pastoral charge of the church at ,williamsburg1 ,rev4 ,a4 ,a4 ,myers was at liberty to give himself to more extended missionary work2 and1 as might be expected1 he has gone into it with a will4 ,he has organized three new churches2 one at ,jellico1 with #aa members2 one at ,pleasant ,view1 with #ac members1 and one at ,rockhold1 with #ae members4 ,under his superintendency the ,jellico church has erected a good1 commodious house1 but it needs a bell4 ,the congregations number from #bej to #cjj1 and the pastor1 ,rev4 ,e4 ,w4 ,bullock1 reports the interest as increasing4 ,pleasant ,view ,church has also put up a house of worship1 now complete except seats4 ,at ,rockland1 stone is on the ground4 ,mr4 ,myers using his own team to haul it1 himself being teamster1 and the lumber is all ready to begin work4 ,a chapel is soon to be erected at ,south ,williamsburg1 where there are hundreds around the mills who cannot be induced to attend church up town4 ,eleven ,sunday-schools1 with an enrollment of #a1bjj and an average of #gej1 have been maintained4 ,these schools extend from ,jellico on the ,state line to the northern part of ,whitley ,county along the railroad4 ,besides these1 several students from the ,academy have conducted ,sunday-schools at their homes1 reporting an enrollment of #afj4 ,day schools have been kept at ,woodbine1 ,rockhold1 ,dowlais and ,jellico with marked success4 ,the ,williamsburg ,academy has had an enrollment of #bjc4 ,the reputation and influence of this school are extending far and wide4 ,the teachers1 imbued with the missionary spirit1 have been a power in the church and in the community as well as in the school4 ,the question whether our schools could be kept up if colored students were admitted1 has been squarely met and answered1 and right at our central station1 ,williamsburg1 we have had colored pupils during the past two terms4 ,when they were first admitted1 there was a stampede of the white scholars1 reducing the number of pupils from #abj to #dj1 but as they had a chance to think the matter over1 and they saw the school going right along as if nothing had happened1 and that it was going to keep right along1 they began to come back again1 with still others to join them1 so that the school closed with a larger enrollment than the previous year4 ,the excitement caused a discussion that found its way into the newspapers of the ,state1 and gave the school such an advertisement as could not have been secured by years of ordinary work4 ,we shall have no more trouble with the color question in ,whitley ,county4 ,it has been settled1 and settled right4 ,in ,tennessee1 the ,independent ,church at ,sherwood1 and its pastor1 ,rev4 ,a4 ,b4 ,smith1 have entered our fellowship by joining the ,central ,south ,association4 ,on the ,cumberland plateau1 ,pastor ,b4 ,dodge has secured the organization of a church with #af members1 which is associated with his church at ,pomona4 ,an organ and hymn-books were furnished by the ,pilgrim ,church1 ,cambridgeport1 ,mass4 ,the people have subscribed #cjj1 chiefly in lumber1 toward a much-needed chapel for church and day school4 ,at both these points day schools have been maintained4 ,at ,grand ,view1 the first year of the ,academy has proved a success1 and now a church has been organized in association with it1 both to be under the care of ,rev4 ,c4 ,b4 ,riggs4 ,the school work of ,mrs4 ,st4 ,clair in ,scott ,county has been remarkable4 ,three years ago there were #bg saloons and two ,sunday-schools in the county1 one school held in ,mrs4 ,st4 ,clair's tent and the other in a blacksmith shop2 now there are three saloons and #be ,sunday-schools1 and the good people are praying with much confidence that their prayers will be answered for three less saloons and three more ,sunday-schools4 ,mr4 ,r4 ,f4 ,taft1 of ,worcester1 ,mass41 was sent down to help in this field4 ,his labors were wonderfully blessed4 ,two churches1 one at ,robbins1 the other at ,helenwood1 were organized4 ,he is not able to continue in our service1 but1 in speaking of what has been accomplished1 he has this to say3 ,wherever ,i went the people were so eager to hear the ,gospel that it was a joyous work to me4 ,all came together1 natives and ,northerners1 and our colored brethren4 ,if the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 has accomplished nothing more1 it has broken down the line of color1 and to-day all mingle together in seeking after the pearl of great price4 ,the work of ,mr4 ,taft has been taken up by ,rev4 ,w4 ,e4 ,barton1 a recent graduate of ,berea ,college1 who finds already so much on his hands that he is crying for help4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,work ,,among ,,the ,,indians4 ,,statistics4 ,churches #e ,members #cja ,ministers #g ,schools #ae ,teachers #eb ,pupils #gjf ,sunday-school scholars #ggf ,our ,indian work is chiefly in ,nebraska and ,dakota1 among the great ,sioux nation that numbers about sixty thousand1 and the tribes that mingle with1 or are located around1 them4 ,we have three main stations1 ,santee1 ,oahe and ,fort ,berthold1 all situated on the ,missouri ,river1 and at points strategic for pushing missions out among the people4 ,santee4--,here is planted the ,santee ,normal ,school1 under the care of ,rev4 ,a4 ,l4 ,riggs4 ,this institution1 pioneer of its kind1 began work for the higher training of ,indian pupils fifteen years ago4 ,its history and experience show the great advancement that has been made by the ,indian mind4 ,at first the pupils came as to a sort of picnic1 and expected to slip out when the fun stopped4 ,but now the discipline1 attendance and class work are of a high order and will compare favorably with schools of similar grade elsewhere4 ,one thing quite noteworthy about ,santee is that while it is often impossible to fill the desired quota of girls for other schools1 applications at ,santee from girls and young women far exceed the ability to receive them4 ,this school1 with its #agg pupils busily engaged in their studies under the instruction of an able corps of teachers1 in possession of buildings that are up to the times in all their equipments1 reaching by its influence every ,indian village of the great empire of the ,missouri ,river basin1 is an institution from which1 with ,god's blessing upon its work1 we have a right to expect great things in the future4 ,pilgrim ,church1 under the joint pastorate of the ,rev4 ,artemas ,ehnamani and ,rev4 ,a4 ,l4 ,riggs1 honors the faith and polity of the ,pilgrim ,fathers in its co-operation with the school1 nurturing and extending the cause of ,christian education4 ,its roll numbers #afd names1 and its ,sabbath-school reports an attendance of #ahc4 ,great and urgent fields inviting missionary occupancy lie all around ,santee4 ,swift ,bear's colony1 numbering sixteen families1 an offshoot from ,rosebud agency1 has located along the ,niobrara4 ,others are coming down this fall as soon as their little crops are harvested4 ,all the land on the north side of the ,niobrara1 twenty miles east of the mouth of the ,keya-paba1 and much of the land on the ,ponca ,creek close by1 is now taken4 ,here has services with good attendance1 has during the week taught a government school4 ,at the ,upper ,ponca settlement1 during the months of ,february and ,march1 a mission day school was kept by ,albert ,frazier1 a native teacher4 ,oahe4--,this mission1 with its out-stations1 is in charge of ,rev4 ,t4 ,l4 ,riggs4 ,the native helpers are ,titus ,jugg1 ,elizabeth ,winjan1 ,william ,lee1 ,daniel ,lee1 ,samuel ,smiley1 ,stephen ,yellow ,hawk and ,edwin ,phelps1 all1 with one exception1 full-blood ,dakota ,indians4 ,the ,indians of the ,rosebud ,agency on the ,white ,river have long been calling for missionaries to be sent among them4 ,the ,park ,street ,church1 ,boston1 has given #djj to open a mission in that needy region1 and ,mr4 ,riggs expects to have a well-established out-station on the ,white ,river before the beginning of the coming winter4 ,during the year a movement has been made to establish an industrial school at ,oahe4 ,the ,indian ,bureau gave twenty scholarships4 ,alonzo ,trask1 ,esq41 executor in the ,marquand estate1 gave #a1ejj toward a building1 on condition that an additional #a1ejj be raised4 ,this additional amount ,mr4 ,riggs secured4 ,the beginning of the school was made in ,january4 ,twelve scholars were all that could be accommodated4 ,they were promptly secured4 ,the school has been continued by the exercise of strictest economy and the willing self-sacrifices of all concerned4 ,the experiment has proved a success1 and a good beginning has been made for another year4 ,the new building is now about1 if not quite1 ready1 and fitted to receive ,myron ,eells stands almost alone to represent the interest our denomination takes in the salvation of the ,indians of that region4 ,at ,skokomish he has a church of #df members2 at ,dunginess a church of #bh members1 where he spends two ,sabbaths and the intervening week each month2 and at ,squakson1 a small reservation formerly in charge of the ,presbyterians1 who have now withdrawn1 he conducts public worship once a month4 ,in these three places he has under his pastoral care #ajb families2 average attendance at public worship1 #aej2 at ,sabbath school1 #hd2 at prayer meeting1 #fb4 missionary force there are eleven ,chinese helpers4 ,four new schools have been opened at the following points3 ,alturas1 ,fresno1 ,san ,diego and ,tulare4 ,the school at ,alturas1 in the northeastern part of ,california1 though established for the ,chinese1 like all other ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 schools1 is open to everybody1 irrespective of race or color1 and the ,indians in the vicinity have so largely availed themselves of the privilege that they greatly outnumber the ,chinese4 ,this school is under the care of ,mrs4 ,griffiths1 wife of the pastor of the ,congregational ,church in the place4 ,she has the constant coperation of her husband1 who welcomes to his church all who can be induced to attend from the school4 ,the mission at ,stockton1 the first one established by us in ,california1 was closed last year1 but has been reopened with an attendance and promise such as it never had before4 ,our schools are all in the hands of devoted and efficient teachers1 are well located and well rooted4 ,we are justified in feeling that they are all fairly on the way to become permanent4 ,the ,california ,chinese mission1 whose superintendency has been under the care of ,rev4 ,w4 ,c4 ,pond ever since its organization in #ahge1 is auxiliary to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,it has its own ,president and ,board of ,managers4 ,it works in closest harmony with the parent society1 and while it must look to us for by far the largest part of the funds necessary to carry its work forward1 yet it does not rely wholly upon our appropriations1 but makes continuous efforts to raise money itself4 ,it reports as having received into its own treasury the past year #c1ada4bj4 ,its property consists of the ,barnes and the ,west ,mission ,houses in ,san ,francisco1 together with an interest in the ,north ,mission ,house of ,san ,francisco and the new ,mission ,house in ,tulare4 ,mr4 ,pond has made strenuous efforts to secure sufficient contributions to bring to pass1 without incurring debt1 a transfer of these properties to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and he informs us that this result is now assured and that the transfer will soon be made4 ,we shall thus come into possession of property worth upward of #i1jjj1 free from debt4 ,the past year has not been in garnered results so fruitful as our ,superintendent and his co-workers had expected2 yet they have been faithful in the cultivation of the field4 ,early in the year they determined to be more aggressive than formerly4 ,if the ,chinese would not come in greater numbers to the schools1 then the missionaries would go to them4 ,three men in the providence of ,god were at hand who were impressed with the importance of this aggressive work1 and who were able to preach to the ,chinese in their own language2 ,rev4 ,d4 ,d4 ,jones1 who had returned from missionary work in ,south ,china1 ,jee ,gam and ,wong ,ock4 ,these brethren have been engaged in evangelistic work both at the mission houses and on the streets in ,san ,francisco and at several other points4 ,but hard hearts1 threatened persecution1 and actively working prejudice have everywhere stood in the way of progress4 ,still ,god did not leave ,his children altogether without some evidence of ,his favor4 ,there were eighteen who professed conversion and twelve who received baptism4 ,the reflex influence of these evangelistic services has been productive of great spiritual blessing to our missionaries and to the ,chinese ,christians4 ,it has driven them to realize that they must more than ever trust in the power of ,god's spirit to overcome the difficulties2 that they must faithfully hold and work every point now occupied2 that they must pray on and labor on until the ,holy ,spirit descend in power to break the stony hearts and dissipate the opposing forces of ,mongolian heathenism on the one hand and ,caucasian inconsistency and infidelity on the other4 ,brethren1 pray for us6 is the almost heart-agonizing appeal ,superintendent ,pond makes to the constituents of this ,association4 ,never before1 he writes1 were we so well prepared to do good service to the ,master1 and to move on with saving power among these dark souls purchased with ,his blood1 as now1 at the opening of this new fiscal year4 ,yet never before did we look on into the year with such a sense of utter helplessness or such a despair of real success except through
