before him4 ,he was a good student1 standing well up in the first quarter of his class4 ,he was elected a member of ,theta ,delta ,chi ,fraternity1 was one of the ,editors and ,assistant ,business ,manager of the college ,annual in his ,junior year1 and ,business ,manager of the ,engineering ,journal in his ,senior year4 ,he was graduated in #ahhi with the degree of ,c4 ,e4 ,as a boy ,mr4 ,deans was fond of games and all healthy outdoor sports4 ,he was a lover of ,nature and of animals1 fond of fishing and hunting1 and was never happier than when roaming the beautiful woods and mountains of his native ,state4 ,with such tastes it was natural to find him1 in his college days1 a participator in1 and an enthusiastic supporter of1 athletic games4 ,not only in athletics1 but in all things pertaining to ,lehigh ,university1 ,mr4 ,deans was a most loyal and enthusiastic son of his ,alma ,mater1 both at college and after he had gone out into the world4 ,he thoroughly appreciated the benefits derived from his technical training1 and was so eager that others should share them1 that early in his business career he advanced sufficient funds to two ambitious young men to carry them through ,lehigh4 ,immediately after graduation ,mr4 ,deans entered the employ of ,sooysmith and ,company1 the well-known foundation engineers and contractors4 ,he rapidly advanced to positions of responsibility with this company1 and1 in #ahie1 became its ,vice-,president and ,chief ,executive ,officer4 ,when1 a year or two later1 ,charles ,sooysmith1 ,m4 ,am4 ,soc4 ,c4 ,e41 retired from active business1 ,mr4 ,deans organized1 from the ,sooysmith and ,company staff1 the ,engineering ,contract ,company1 of which he became ,president4 ,pressure of business seriously undermining his health1 he was forced to give up temporarily all work in #aijj1 and to spend the next two years in the mountains of ,northern ,pennsylvania4 ,on regaining his health1 he associated himself with the firm of ,john ,monks and ,son1 of ,new ,york ,city1 and1 at the time of his death1 he was ,second ,vice-,president of that company4 ,while under his executive charge1 both ,sooysmith and ,company and the ,engineering ,contract ,company1 constructed a number of the most important bridge foundations in the ,united ,states1 and the former firm first successfully introduced pneumatic work in the foundations of the modern high office buildings of ,new ,york ,city1 notably the ,manhattan ,life1 ,washington ,life1 ,standard ,oil1 and ,empire ,buildings on ,lower ,broadway4 ,at the time of his death1 ,mr4 ,deans was in full charge of the building of the piers of the reconstructed ,baltimore and ,ohio bridge over the ,susquehanna ,river1 at ,havre de ,grace1 ,md4 ,in the early years of his connection with ,sooysmith and ,company1 ,mr4 ,deans was employed on work in the field1 rising from subordinate positions to that of ,superintendent in responsible charge of work4 ,during this period he acquired an intimate and practical knowledge of foundation construction1 and his subsequent career gave evidence of the value of this training4 ,being thus well-equipped1 ,mr4 ,deans soon became notable as a business engineer4 ,his judgment on all substructure engineering problems was quick and keen1 his thorough technical knowledge being supplemented by his penetrating practical sense4 ,his business ability was of a high order1 and his efficiency was largely increased by his industry and methodical habits4 ,as a negotiator1 he was in the first rank4 ,his quick appreciation of the essentials in business transactions1 his fertile resource in the most complicated financial dealings1 his patience and persistence in the face of discouragement or delay1 and his inflexible determination when once his decisions were reached1 were qualities which placed him in the highest rank as a contracting engineer4 ,to those with whom he came in close contact1 ,mr4 ,deans will always be remembered as exemplifying the ideal combination of technical training with business efficiency4 ,he lightened the seriousness of his business transactions with a quick sense of fun1 a fondness for a good story1 and an infectious good humor4 ,his genuine interest in the work of his associates and his unfeigned delight in their success won him many friendships which lasted throughout his life and
