,d4 ,,part #ba ,,power ,,for ,,success ,,what ,,this ,,book ,,teaches ,this book brings to a close that portion of ,,mastery ,,of ,,self1 which deals with the art of ,success-,magnetism4 ,acquiring magnetism is a constructive effort4 ,it is a building process4 ,you are rearing a structure4 ,you rise1 from the foundation1 through successive stories to the culminating peak4 ,the most pleasing1 notable structures men build from granite and steel and wood1 tower like a ,woolworth ,building or a ,rheims ,cathedral--higher and higher1 until they finally reach a gold- tipped crown or spire1 high in the sunlit sky4 ,and so1 in rearing your invisible shrine of personal ,success- magnetism1 we now come to the topmost peak of the structure4 ,this book gives you the crowning inspirations1 tipped and topped with the final ,golden ,laws of ,magnetism in all ,applied ,life4 ,master these lessons in the magnetism of success1 and you will go forth upon the highways and by-ways of life1 endowed with a kingly confidence in your ability to win a measure of success achieved by few4 ,but remember--7should discouragement seek to dog your steps7-- every great structure requires the process of time4 ,the giant trees of ,california were once puny saplings4 ,the slow lapse of time has drawn nature into their mighty hearts4 ,just as surely as the absorption of natural forces built the giant redwoods1 just as surely can you draw upon nature for ,,giant ,,powers4 ,the ,fire4 ,in ancient myth1 ,prometheus ,filched fire from the altars of the gods ,to warm the world1 ,incurring ,jove's dread wrath ,and endless torment4 ,lo1 mind1--inflamed by the vision3 ,of victim and the torturing bird1 ,of black vindictiveness and suffering ,will1 ,rived forever1 yet for aye supreme1-- ,heroizes the deed and soul ,and wreaks on canvas and in drama high ,its passionate admiration4 ,now1 too1 in palace and hut confronted1 ,in battleship and iron steed defying space1 ,in flaring furnace of the smelted ore1 ,in haunts of coal and steam below the whirling wheels1 ,life laughs and sings and thunders ,an oratorio merging all the powers of harmony1 ,and hails the high-born ,thief1 ,as giver of ethereal fire4 ,the atomic thrill waits also the clear call ,to lift dull bodies till the joy of flesh ,becomes a common luxury2-- ,to vibrate rhythmically swift ,through all the responsive cells of thought ,till a man might solemnly hold ,all things are possible on the bursting earth2-- ,to energize the mystic self ,with consciousness of life deific ,till the whole world1 jubilant1 should flame ,with its glory1 actual1 concrete1 the one sure ,truth ,of a rock-girt globe1 or a sun-filled space4 --,,the ,,author4 ,,the ,,twenty-,,seventh ,,lesson--,the ,four ,pyramids4 ,this equation's writ ,in every scene3 ,the end shall fit-- ,as extremes to mean-- ,whatever's forerunner to it4 --,,the ,,author4 ,,principle--,the best use of self demands that it be understood4 ,our ideal specimen of human nature is the whole man at his best4 ,the etheric life demands 7a7 the vibrations native to the body in health--7,physical ,magnetism7--7b7 the vibrations induced by the active mind1 7c7 the vibrations intensified by controlled emotional states1 7d7 the regulative vibrations of psychic righteousness or honor--7,psychic ,magnetism74 ,in this scheme nothing is inferior1 but all elements are appointed to be subordinate to the last4 ,these vibrations should run through the whole etheric activity a binding thread of force4 ,we are now to study the four pyramids of the etheric life4 ,the purpose is four-fold4 ,if you will put yourself into this lesson as you have1 presumably1 put yourself into the preceding twenty-six lessons1 you will discover-- ,firstly--,magnetic ,,concentration2 ,secondly--,the ,,relation of the ,,divisions of self to the ,,whole self2 ,thirdly--,a better ,,understanding of your personality2 ,fourthly--,the supreme importance of ,,psychic ,,righteousness4 ,it is altogether probable that the majority of people live almost wholly in the physical pyramids of existence4 ,properly speaking1 the illustration on page #dbb is a single pyramid rather than four pyramids4 ,it is composed of four triangular walls1 each of which is called a pyramid for convenience and represents a certain phase of your nature4 ,the great pyramidal ,i ,,am is complete only as all sides of your selfhood are fully built up4 ,you are ,,looking ,,down from the ,i ,,am4 ,a ,,curious ,,illustration4 ,a point has neither length1 breadth1 nor thickness4 ,move it in thought any distance in one direction1 and you have the line4 ,move the line ,,from its direction any distance1 you have the surface4 ,move the surface ,,out of its plane any distance1 you have the solid4 ,thus you have obtained length1 breadth1 thickness1 line1 surface1 solid1 motion1 space1 time1 number1 structure1 body1 and1 in the attention1 mind1--and scores of other factors 7study out a long list71--by means of that which has no length1 no breadth1 no thickness4 ,the real ,,you is that point4 ,,you move and describe a line of life4 ,this line1 repeated1 becomes habit1 which moved through time1 makes conduct1 and right conduct1 projected through life1 yields magnetism4 ,if you live only on surface ,i1 you are mere animal4 ,if you project1 that surface through to ,,iii1 you are a fine moral person4 ,if you project surface ,,ii through to surface ,,iv1 you are magnetic4 ,if you combine these solids1 ,,you are the ,ideal ,pyramid1 ,i ,,am ,,power4 ,let us add the following3 ,culture is not measured by the greatness of the field which is covered by our knowledge1 but by the nicety with which we can perceive relations in that field1 whether great or small4 ,this book desires that you become acquainted with the unused portions of your nature4 ,in order to this1 you are now invited to make a long regime of mining out the magnetic significance of-- ,,the ,,four ,,pyramids4 ,i ,harmony-- ,exercise--,recreation --,air--,sleep--,water --,food--,regularity--,digestion --,cleanliness--,economy-- ,scientific ,body-,building and ,using4 ,i4 ,pyramid of ,physical ,health ,,ii ,personal ,magnetism4 ,you are now invited to write out all the possible ,,true combinations of these four pyramids1 and particularly to observe the following ,,right ,,pyramidal ,,combinations4 ,we see that-- #a4 ,physical ,health makes for ,physical ,magnetism2 #b4 ,physical ,magnetism bases ,psychic ,magnetism2 #c4 ,physical ,health neighbors ,moral ,health2 #d4 ,moral ,health conduces to ,physical ,magnetism2 #e4 ,moral ,health is indispensable to ,psychic ,magnetism2 #f4 ,psychic health bases ,physical ,magnetism4 ,we also observe that-- #g4 ,physical ,magnetism assists ,physical ,psychic ,magnetism assists ,moral ,health2 #ab4 ,psychic ,magnetism assists ,physical ,magnetism4 ,we therefore conclude that the following are ,,incomplete ,,pyramidal ,,combinations4 #a4 ,physical ,health--,physical ,magnetism ,psychic ,magnetism ,moral ,health4 #b4 ,physical ,health ,physical ,magnetism--,psychic ,magnetism ,moral ,health4 #c4 ,physical ,health ,physical ,magnetism ,psychic ,moral ,health ,physical ,health--,physical ,magnetism ,psychic ,magnetism4 ,impossible in part4 ,you may thus possess physical health without physical magnetism4 ,but if you seek physical magnetism1 you must go by the way of physical health4 ,you may possess moral health without full psychic magnetism1 but if you seek the highest form of psychic magnetism1 you must go by the way of moral health4 ,it is now evident that the following are ,,ideal ,,combinations4 ,,first--,,from ,,the ,,standpoint ,,of ,,morals4 #a4 ,first3--,moral ,health4 ,next3 #b4 ,moral ,health ,psychic ,magnetism ,physical ,physical ,health4 ,valueless alone4 ,,conclusions4 ,summarizing possible conclusions1 we have the following3 #a4 ,physical health is indispensable to physical magnetism2 #b4 ,psychic righteousness 7health7 is indispensable to psychic magnetism2 #c4 ,psychic magnetism is indispensable to best physical magnetism2 #d4 ,physical magnetism is not wholly indispensable to psychic magnetism4 #e4 ,,perfect ,,psychic ,,magnetism ,,involves ,,health1 ,,physical ,,magnetism ,,and ,,psychic ,,righteousness4 ,the ,,all-,,important departments of your personality are those of ,,psychic ,,righteousness and ,,psychic ,,magnetism4 ,but the ,,ideal ,,man of success is the ,,whole ,,man always ,,at ,,his ,,best4 ,the whole man is more than psychic development2 he is a ,,product ,,and ,a ,,creator ,,of ,,practical ,,affairs4 ,,magnetism ,a ,,growth4 ,let us understand4 ,you cannot reasonably hope to succeed by merely ,,dreaming about success4 ,you surely cannot achieve success if you ,,plunge ,,blindly through your career4 ,you cannot really succeed without possessing some degree of ,,personal ,,magnetism4 ,when you began the present study1 you certainly possessed a measure of magnetic capacity1 either physical or psychic1 otherwise you would not have purchased this book4 ,if you have energetically observed its directions1 you have developed both varieties2 but1 above that1 you have also combined them into one living whole1 the magnetic personality4 ,this result has required at least a year of persistent effort4 ,if you have arrived at this point in less time1 you should go back and begin where haste first retarded your progress4 ,,magnetism ,,is ,a ,,natural ,,growth4 ,no matter how great may be your ability to read and understand books1 that growth1 that law1 require time as well as intelligent effort4 ,no matter how poor may be your ability in such respect1 that growth is absolutely certain if you put reasonable time and genuine effort into its acquisition4 ,the giant trees of ,california were once puny saplings4 ,the slow lapse of time has drawn nature into their mighty hearts4 ,magnetism can no more be acquired by the mere reading of a book1 or by hurried practice of its directions1 than can these giants of the ,west be produced in the hot-house culture of a northern summer4 ,,magnetic ,,growth ,,is ,,naturally ,,slow4 ,its principles1 its methods1 and the results of its study1 have to be deeply sunk into and absorbed and assimilated by the subjective self before the reaction of magnetism in the objective life can obtain4 ,this book has promised no miracle4 ,if you have read it correctly1 you have learned that magnetic growth cannot be hurried4 ,these statements are placed here because1 had they appeared at the beginning of our work1 the outlook would have seemed1 perhaps1 discouraging1 but more especially because they would not have been understood4 ,you now understand them because you have toiled1 and you can afford to smile at such possible discouragement4 ,you have paid an easy price for magnetic power1 for the gains discount the pains4 ,,magnetism ,,and ,,practical ,,life4 ,the faithful observance of the suggestions of this volume has developed many surprises during the time occupied4 ,it is possible that the lessons have unduly cultivated your subjective life4 ,in a work of this kind1 such a danger is unavoidable4 ,the growth of magnetism involves intense and continuous concentration of thought upon the psychic field1 and it is very likely that you may find it necessary to guard against that danger4 ,the method of so guarding is briefly indicated below4 ,the sole value of magnetism consists in its practical application to everyday affairs4 ,success-,magnetism is not an accomplishment merely2 it is a practical power4 ,when rightly developed and used1 it controls the subjective self in the concrete work of the objective4 ,the definition of the goal you have been seeking now appears3 ,,success-,,magnetism ,,is ,,personal ,,magnetism ,,intelligently ,,multiplied ,,into ,,actual ,,life4 ,the first duty of man is practical sanity4 ,,avoid ,,mere ,,occultism4 ,it is possible that you have now discovered in yourself certain occult talents1 such as telepathy1 hypnotism1 mediumship1 clairaudience1 clairvoyance1 psychometry1 psychic healing1 and the like4 ,it would be evidence of ignorance to call in question these faculties of the human ego4 ,the author's personal experience forbids4 ,nevertheless1 it is now freely stated3 ,,no ,,so-,,called ,,occult ,,science ,,forms ,,any ,,integral ,,part ,,of ,,personal ,,magnetism4 ,hypnotism and magnetism are widely separated4 ,psychic healing occupies another field4 ,clairaudience and clairvoyance are not utilizable by magnetism4 ,telepathy and psychometry are related to its etheric explanation alone4 ,mediumship is totally independent of it4 ,in other words1 personal magnetism in operation requires ,,none of these talents1 except1 perhaps1 telepathy and genuine palmistry-- the study of hands as indicative physiologically 7not occultly7 of present character 7not past or future events74 ,it is a noble characteristic of personal magnetism that1 while issuing in and from the subconscious self1 its real instruments are the everyday body1 the everyday mind1 the everyday self1 as its real field is the everyday1 objective world1 big with opportunity1 adequate to the splendid development of any human being4 ,,you ,,are ,,now ,,urged ,,to ,,permit ,,no ,,occult ,,study ,,or ,,talent ,,to ,,interrupt ,,or ,,befog ,,your ,,practical ,,life4 ,all things are his who steadfastly remembers that life is real1 life is earnest4 ,magnetism is sanity at work4 ,it is unalterably opposed to runaway fads1 chimerical visions1 unstrung nerves1 mental aberration1 psychic gourmandism4 ,magnetism is practical cooperation with level-headed people who are bent on making the best of self and the world through created opportunity4 ,for these reasons1 you cannot study magnetism too deeply nor practise it too faithfully4 ,its legitimate culture will harm none1 will benefit all4 ,to him who possesses any occult power and uses it nobly1 this book extends congratulations4 ,how ,may ,contentment ,dull ,my ,zeal ,if one small fact my mind could know ,of matter or of spirit1-- ,within1 without1 above1 below1 ,and never neighbor near it1-- ,this tiny thing a ,universe would be1 ,clear as ,arabian caves to ,sesame4 ,then should ,i scan the littlest laws ,their mightier kin unfolding1 ,detect the essence of all ,cause ,and see the ,cosmos molding2 ,then should ,i run1 a new-born god1 the race ,begun with thought1 complete in planet-space4 ,how might one stay the perfect quest ,in surfeit of succeeding8 ,this were a weak and venal rest-- ,vast yonder-wealth unheeding4 ,this were to make of ,knowing that high goal ,which truth declares is ,culturing a ,soul4 ,how may contentment dull my zeal1 ,with range on range uprising1 ,while growing power to know and feel ,adds to the soul's sure prizing8 ,let me1 one god1 like ,him1 the ,infinite ,all1 ,in each achievement hear the ,higher ,call4 --,,the ,,author ,,the ,,twenty-,,eighth ,,lesson--,higher ,magnetic ,laws4 ,relays of races1 rugged and long1 ,up the peaks rising and blending6 ,wine for the daring1 meat for the strong1 ,power with toil contending6 ,higher6 ,yet higher6 the man's full song-- ,never a last ascending6 --,,the ,,author4 ,scattered here and there through the preceding pages1 various laws of magnetism have appeared4 ,we now proceed to formulate certain other laws that have been involved in our discussion1 but not1 for the most part1 expressed as such4 ,these laws are of an advanced order1 and should be exhaustively studied in the interest of the highest magnetic intelligence and power4 ,necessarily this work must be purely individual and cannot be specifically directed4 ,we begin with ,i4 ,,laws ,,of ,,magnetic ,,development4 ,,first ,,law3 ,,discovery ,,of ,,endowment4 ,the limits of magnetic endowment latent in every normal person emerge only through prolonged effort in the culture of magnetism4 ,,second ,,law3 ,,difficult ,,environment4 ,magnetism develops in direct proportion to the difficulty of environment4 ,,third ,,law3 ,,magnetic ,,intention4 ,magnetism evolves solely through multiplication of endowment into environment by the persistent magnetic intention4 ,,fourth ,,law3 ,,free ,,adjustment4 ,the culture of magnetism imperatively demands that central adjustment of the self to all powers which realizes in absolute psychic freedom4 ,,fifth ,,law3 ,,concentration4 ,the magnetic multiplication of endowment into environment is only possible to intense1 persistent and unified concentration to the methods of ,success-,magnetism4 ,,sixth ,,law3 ,,purpose-,,ideals4 ,growth of noblest magnetism depends1 in the larger sense1 upon general adherence to a single1 preeminent1 ideal life-purpose1 and1 in the particular sense1 upon specialization of the individual in studied magnetic conduct related to that end4 ,,seventh ,,law3 ,,receptivity4 ,the highest magnetism realizes through magnetic laws in proportion as the inner self maintains alert receptivity to the ,universal ,forces4 ,,eighth ,,law3 ,,demand4 ,the silent1 persistent demand of the self upon the ,universal ,magnetism makes it a center toward which the ,forces naturally gravitate4 ,,ninth ,,law3 ,,affirmation4 ,continuous1 intense affirmation of actual possessed magnetic power stimulates the success-elements1 maintains receptivity1 emphasizes demand1 harmonizes and intensifies inner etheric vibrations1 and induces a positive movement of the universal ether and its forces inward toward the central self4 ,,tenth ,,law3 ,,psychic ,,energy4 ,all personal magnetism involves psychic energy developed and directed by magnetic intention4 ,,eleventh ,,law3 ,,self-,,control4 ,magnetic energy concentrates through psychic control of its tendencies4 ,,twelfth ,,law3 ,,magnetic ,,quality4 ,the inner psychic attitude--the character of magnetic intention--determines the quality and effectiveness of the effort to multiply endowment into environment1 and1 therefore1 the kind and degree of magnetism attained4 ,,thirteenth ,,law3 ,,self-,,valuation4 ,other things being equal1 magnetism unfolds as gratifying1 but unostentatious1 self- valuation develops4 ,,fourteenth ,,law3 ,,use ,,of ,,self4 ,under conformity to other magnetic laws1 the highest magnetism issues only from the constant best use of self at its best to the best advantage4 ,,fifteenth ,,law3 ,,magnetic ,,heroism4 ,self-pity1 complaint1 and all kindred states1 confuse1 weaken and waste every variety of magnetic power1 while heroic acceptance of conditions for their betterment1 and courageous assertion of self as master1 conserve and enormously develop the noblest magnetism in proportion to the sway of the magnetic intention4 ,,sixteenth ,,law3 ,,action ,,and ,,reaction4 ,highest magnetism involves not only studied cultivation1 but1 as well1 the magnetic utilization of stimulating reactions induced by intelligent employment4 ,,seventeenth ,,law3 ,,recovery4 ,whoever1 on occasion of any psychic 7magnetic7 failure or defeat1 dedicates the whole of aroused desperation to recovery of ground1 infallibly induces a stress in the etheric life around him which ultimately draws to his aid1 with the onsweep of worlds1 the ,universal ,forces4 ,,eighteenth ,,law3 ,,reproduction4 ,everything is transmitted1 everything is transformed1 everything is reproduced 7,ochorowicz72 in physical and psychic health alone1 therefore1 are the ,universal ,forces transmitted through perfect etheric vibrations1 transformed through effective etheric conduction1 and reproduced in magnetism by adequate and harmonious psychic control of etheric capabilities4 ,,nineteenth ,,law3 ,,superiority ,,of ,,culture4 ,the crude values of natural magnetism1 the automatic functions of unconscious magnetism1 demonstrate at their best solely as they climax in full conscious magnetic culture4 ,,ii4 ,,laws ,,of ,,magnetic ,,action4 ,,first ,,law3 ,relation of ,power to ,tone4 ,the effectiveness of magnetism in action depends upon harmony of tone between its possessor and any other person1 and in securing such tone- harmony1 on any magnetic plane1 in any particular psychic state1 at any given time1 psychic and physical magnetism mutually cooperate4 ,,second ,,law3 ,magnetic ,intention4 ,the magnetic intention 7,i ,,intend ,,magnetically7 intensifies otherwise unconscious magnetism1 and runs through all the mass of general etheric vibrations like a theme in complicated music1 imparting to them unity1 character1 intelligence1 and definite and enormous effectiveness in practical employment4 ,,third ,,law3 ,influence of ,purpose4 ,in the employment of magnetism1 long-run purpose establishes etheric character1 and specialized purpose confirms that character if it concentrates the general purpose1 but confuses that character1 perhaps destroys it1 if it antagonizes the general purpose4 ,,fourth ,,law3 ,force of the ,ideal4 ,idealism of motive determines the character of etheric vibrations1 and idealism of magnetic activities determines the quality of magnetism achieved4 ,,fifth ,,law3 ,sway of ,other-,interest4 ,the general sway of other- interest in life1 and the particular influence of other-interest on special occasions1 impart to uses of magnetism enormous effectiveness1 and not least in relation to self4 ,,sixth ,,law3 ,reaction of ,admiration4 ,the consciousness of admiration for others1 recognized by them1 reacts with tremendous power to stimulate magnetic action4 ,,seventh ,,law3 ,measure of the ,intake4 ,in the magnetic life1 intake of power is correctly measured by output of power3 inversely in waste1 directly in intelligent expenditure4 ,,eighth ,,law3 ,adjustment4 ,magnetic effectiveness is proportioned to accuracy and fulness of adjustment1--to things1 to laws1 to forces1 to times1 to situations1 to qualities1 to facts1 to truths1 to persons1--and only studied experience can discover and establish such adjustment4 ,the problems of adjustment to persons are these3 ,with inferiors1 to put self magnetically1 without appearance of condescension1 on their levels for the end in view1--applying then the general principles of magnetism4 ,with ,,equals1 to apply the general principles4 ,with ,,superiors1 to assume their level while magnetically deferring1 without adulation or humility1 to such superiority1 regardless of its reality or unreality1 for the end in view1 applying the general principles of magnetism4 ,,ninth ,,law3 ,,the ,,magnetism ,,of ,,identity4 ,the magnetic value of adjustment expresses the force and completeness with which the individual can identify himself with another person1 suggesting oneness through attitude1 gesture1 act1 eye1 tone1 language1 and telepathic sympathy4 ,,tenth ,,law3 ,,the ,,use ,,of ,,reactions4 ,magnetic skill exhibits in the manner in which beneficial reactions are received and utilized1 negative or indifferent reactions are ostensibly ignored1 yet constituted stimulation for further persistent magnetic action1 and hostile reactions are refused1 without ostentation1 but with determination 7if worth while7 to win out through better adjustment and increased magnetic endeavor4 ,,eleventh ,,law3 ,,magnetic ,,attack4 ,magnetic success demands the direct attack when etheric harmony of tone is assured1 but the indirect method otherwise2 that is1 such attack-methods as will secure that harmony4 ,,twelfth ,,law3 ,,the ,,conquest ,,of ,,antagonism ,magnetism ostensibly ognores1 and refrains from1 exciting antagonism2 but1 when antagonism is evident1 rejects it and proceeds on the indirect attack1 or openly accepts it and adopts the direct or the indirect method as the one or the other promises speediest and most perfect harmony of tone4 ,,thirteenth ,,law3 ,,mortal ,,antipathies4 ,success-,magnetism conquers the influence of deep-seated natural antipathies only by avoiding their causes4 ,,fourteenth ,,law3 ,,re-,,adjustment4 ,the etheric life is unceasing reaction1 and magnetism1 therefore1 demonstrates itself by squaring with every issue and making of every change and every defeat a new opportunity4 ,,fifteenth ,,law3 ,,control ,,of ,,output4 ,it is an important to know when to open the circuit--that is1 to cut off the current of magnetic force--as it is to know when to close the circuit--to pour forth magnetic influences4 ,,sixteenth ,,law3 ,,concession4 ,concession becomes magnetic in its timeliness4 ,if premature or belated1 it defeats magnetism4 ,,seventeenth ,,law3 ,,harmonic ,,conditions4 ,magnetism enhances through beauty of personal surroundings1--in cleanliness1 order1 adornment1 art1 literature1 music1 and the like4 ,,eighteenth ,,law3 ,,sovereignty ,,of ,,will4 is the director of native and unconscious magnetism and the creator and director of developed magnetism4 ,power of will is indispensable to magnetic power4 ,,nineteenth ,,law3 ,,energy ,,in ,,magnetic ,,action4 ,the projection of magnetic influence proportions to inner1 conscious intensity of psychic and nervous states4 ,exploding powder in the gun calls for the man behind the weapon1 and the soul within the man1 and powerful vibrations within the soul's arena1 and magnetic intention within the vibrations1 and psychic energy within the intention4 ,,twentieth ,,law3 ,,self-,,control4 ,magnetic power becomes effective precisely as mastery of self1 in restraint and in handling1 approaches perfection4 ,,twenty-,,first ,,law3 ,,magnetic ,,handling ,,of ,,self4 ,the attitude of magnetism1--the magnetic intention and psychic pose1--,i ,,stand ,,positively ,,magnetic ,,toward ,,this ,,person ,,or ,,this ,,situation1-- constantly maintained1 ultimately instructs in all the arts of magnetic self-handling through the law of auto-suggestion1 and realizes in practical form its own ideals4 ,,twenty-,,second ,,law3 ,,the ,,magnetic ,,mask4 ,the mask of magnetism achieves effectiveness when it covers personal states and purposes in a manner positively to attract1 and in that manner alone4 ,,twenty-,,third ,,law3 ,,magnetic ,,consciousness4 ,intense magnetic consciousness--without thought concerning it--secures1 by its uplifting and stimulating influence1 the greatest exaltation of personal powers when employed4 ,,twenty-,,fourth ,,law3 ,,magnetic ,,faith4 ,a deep and vital faith in the certainty of magnetic success renders all latent and developed magnetism dynamic1 if that faith is thrown into action4 ,,twenty-,,fifth ,,law3 ,,the ,,demand ,,in ,,use4 ,in the application of magnetism to any task1 intense1 persistent demand upon the ,universal ,forces swings them directly into the effort4 ,,twenty-,,sixth ,,law3 ,,the ,,affirmation ,,in ,,use4 ,when1 in the application of magnetism1 one affirms1 mentally1 intensely1 persistently1 ,i ,,am ,,receiving ,,and ,,exerting ,,power1 he unconsciously calls to aid all the success-elements and makes himself a center toward which the ,universal ,forces inevitably gravitate4 ,,twenty-,,seventh ,,law3 ,,the ,,magnetic ,,telescope4 ,the magnetic attitudes1 faith1 demand and affirmation1 constitute a magnetic telescope through which the distant goal of success is magnified and all nearer obstacles1 lures and irritating conditions are closed out of view4 ,,twenty-,,eighth ,,law3 ,,magnetic ,,accumulations4 ,magnetism1 through correct application to life1 not only develops in the individual1 but accumulates in his environment1 and reacts beneficially without direct personal supervision4 ,,twenty-,,ninth ,,law3 ,,the ,,personal ,,atmosphere4 ,the personal atmosphere exactly reflects the inner self1 and it furnishes a perfect field for magnetic effectiveness only when the self and the body are clean and buoyantly healthy4 ,footnote3 ,see the small booklet1 ,the ,personal ,atmosphere4 ,,thirtieth ,,law3 ,,subordination ,,of ,,physical ,,magnetism4 ,in the subordination of physical to psychic magnetism1 each finds its greatest effectiveness--according to the relative development of both orders4 ,,thirty-,,first ,,law3 ,,the ,,fixed ,,idea4 ,long-continued association with some fixed1 great and attractive idea sets into operation certain deep1 subconscious operations of the soul1 which1 for a time unrecognized and unmanifest in life1 gradually and surely coordinate all individual powers thereto1 induce a working of the whole system in harmony therewith1 and finally emerge in the objective life and consciousness as a unified1 actual dynamic force4 ,the idea has swung the individual1 has transformed him1 has harmonized and intensified his faculties and his personal ether1 has come to sovereignty in his personal atmosphere1 and from there exerts a dynamic force upon other people and life's conditions4 ,this book has tried to saturate you with the idea of success coordinating with its necessary elements1 and has thus endeavored to swing your whole being into mighty belief that large success is also for ,,you4 ,if you have rushed through the lessons1 you have failed to give the above great law its full opportunity4 ,if you have abided with the book1 patiently1 confidently1 energetically1 taking plenty of time to work over into your practical life its teachings and directions1 you have invoked that law1 and1 soon or late1 you will find yourself a new soul and successful1 provided you do not nullify the law by dropping out of your career the practical use of the lessons herein given4 ,you are now invited to assemble with these laws those that have been previously stated1 and to make them guiding principles for life4 ,and you are finally urged to return to the first lesson and to repeat the work1 greatly improved1 through which you have passed4 ,if you cannot do this 7or choose not to do so71 you should at least constitute this book a permanent companion4 ,you will find1 as you refer to it from time to time1 that many values have escaped you1 that new values are constantly appearing1 and that the volume is becoming more and more a friend and a guide4 ,the principles and methods herein set forth should not be laid aside1 at least permanently1 nor forgotten1 but should be worked into the very fibre of your being4 ,you will then1 and by so much1 certainly demonstrate ,success-,magnetism4 ,many of our most persistent students have declared that this book ,,grows ,,on ,,them ,,with ,,every ,,reading4 ,in revising its pages the author is more than ever satisfied that the volume is a great inspiration and of incalculable value to those who will make it1 as designed1 a ,companion ,for ,life4 ,you will never uncover its enormous wealth4 ,,magnetism ,,applied4 ,having pursued our work to the present point1 little need be said on the application of the magnetic power4 ,the culture of magnetism implies all along its address to life4 ,if you have toiled for the goal you have used the results1 and experience1 the greatest of teachers1 has instructed you in the art of employing the etheric talent4 ,a few suggestions are1 nevertheless1 now offered as indicators of the larger possible treatment1--remembering that our field is not general success alone1 nor pure magnetism alone1 but is the condensed subject1 ,success-,magnetism4 ,you are1 therefore1 invited to observe the following considerations3 ,i4 ,,general ,,life-,,principles3 #a4 ,magnetism entertains no unnecessary thought of evil concerning others4 #b4 ,it is altogether superior to low-minded revenge4 #c4 ,it never reveals personal embarrassment4 #d4 ,it permits no show of irritation4 #e4 ,it is incapable of losing temper4 #f4 ,it refuses to exhibit hostility4 #g4 ,it never admits1 never discloses1 defeat4 #h4 ,the magnetic person never shows indifference toward others4 #i4 ,magnetism conceals the feelings of ridicule and contempt4 #aj4 ,if you are magnetic1 you never indulge in violence4 #aa4 ,you neither look for slights and insults1 nor do you feel them1 unless they are persistently thrust upon you4 #ab4 ,you are invited to resolve upon the increase of your circle of friends1 and never to lose an opportunity of winning a well- wisher4 #ac4 ,this means1 of course1 that you retain every friend secured1 if possible in self-respect--which should not be unduly rigid4 #ad4 ,the instant recognition of faces and recollection of names is intensely magnetic4 #ae4 ,magnetism ignores all caste distinctions1 and is friendly toward all4 #af4 ,if you would be magnetic in personal relations1 you must splendidly believe both in yourself and in other people4 #ag4 ,the general magnetic attitude is a close compound of the magnetic thought and the success-thought1 buoyant in hope and courage and bound together by the magnetic will4 #ah4 ,in the use of this attitude1 every obligation should be regarded as profoundly sacred4 ,the magnetic person cannot be careless in this respect4 #ai4 ,this book has all along insisted that magnetic success imperatively demands the life of highest honor4 #bj4 ,above all1 you are again urged to banish from the inner self fear1 worry1 discouragement1 depression1 and every such enemy to peace and power4 ,there is in your mind an ,,upper ,,level2 ,,live ,,in ,,that4 ,when worry and the like appear1 you will find them occupying the lower level and absorbing your attention4 ,you should instantly force consciousness to the higher ground1 expelling these enemies and holding up to the better mood4 ,this is the one secret of victory over the king's foes4 ,the author guarantees the remedy in any case that is not fit for the hospital4 #ba4 ,in the conduct of life1 the magnetic person sets before the mind a definite goal1 either life-long or particular1 and adheres thereto with bulldog pertinacity4 #bb4 ,and he1 therefore1 wastes no values1 but economizes all4 #bc4 ,he saves part of his earnings2 he carries his money in his pocket-book1 not loosely4 #bd4 ,but he has the wisdom to recreate1 to rest the body1 to ease the mind1 to take needed breathing-spells for magnetic increase4 ,,ii4 ,,dealing ,,with ,,others3 ,let us finally understand4 ,in applied magnetism1 you simply harmonize the etheric states of others with those of yourself1 and convey to them through the ethereal medium the purpose of your will4 ,the ,,first condition of success here is agreeableness1 the ,,second consists in tact and perseverance1 the ,,third is will-power --not brutal will-force1 but magnetic power of will4 ,in all application of magnetism to persons1 you are urged to remember that your very first goal1 always and preeminently1 is an agreeable feeling within their minds4 ,you should never try to induce a person to act your way until you have thoroughly established in him a good feeling toward yourself4 ,this is the prime initial step4 ,when such a condition has been secured1 you are then ready for the magnetic assault--and then only4 ,when you are dealing with other people1 endeavoring magnetically to win them to your wish1 you should summon the general magnetic feeling within yourself1 will them to do as you desire1 and at the same time think of them as already consenting and acting4 ,your inner condition should be perfectly calm1 buoyant1 hopeful1 whatever the external means employed1 your mind should be concentrated upon the thing desired1 and its accomplishment should be thought of as now secured4 ,the response of the person may be delayed1 but this should not discourage you1 for some minds do not take suggestions 7those of your unspoken will are referred to7 quickly1 and they do not act instantly upon their own thought4 ,it is invariably best to induce people to believe that they are acting on their personal impulse or judgment2 they should be made to feel perfectly free1 not at all coerced1 and that they are doing their own will rather than yours--simply because they wish so to do4 ,we may summarize all these suggestions in the words of a distinguished scientific writer3 ,life is not a bully who swaggers out into the open universe1 upsetting the laws of energy in all directions1 but rather a consummate strategist1 who1 sitting in his secret chamber over his wires1 directs the movements of a great army4 ,this is a good description of magnetism4 ,,iii4 ,,the ,,success-,,magnetism ,,assumption3 ,we are now ready for the great assumption-principle of magnetism in applied life3 ,,think ,,of ,,every ,,goal ,,as ,,already ,,reached1 ,,of ,,every ,,undertaking ,,as ,,already ,,achieved4 ,,treat ,,yourself ,,as ,a ,,live ,,and ,a ,,surely ,,successful ,,proposition4 ,so closes this book4 ,the subject before us has been vast and profound4 ,it is unnecessary to confess that the field has by no means been exhausted4 ,at every step of study its immensity is discovered4 ,even when the general arena of success in life has been closed out of consideration1 as in these pages1 ,success- ,magnetism defies any single mind to fathom it or to bound it4 ,with this feeling1 yet with the confident belief that you are more completely furnished for magnetic achievement because you have read1 studied1 absorbed and practised the teachings now closed1 the author bids you all good-speed in life and signs himself1 ,yours for real success1 ,a ,,brother ,,cooperative4 ,,part #bb ,,culture ,,of ,,courage ,the route by which we approach the pinnacle of ,,mastery ,,of ,,self now takes a new turn4 ,it is neither that of ,business and ,financial achievement1 as we studied in the ,first ,division of the course1 nor is it that of ,success and ,magnetism as was taught in the ,second ,division4 ,for many students we now come to the real battle- ground where they must wage the fight for supremacy4 ,the final #ad lessons group under the general title1 ,the ,,culture ,,of ,,courage4 ,there is an insidious foe to mastery and freedom1 which dooms millions to self-imposed bondage4 ,most people know it has them in its grip2 countless others do not know what the hidden power is which holds them from the richer1 freer1 happier conditions of life4 ,this foe is ,,fear4 ,it assumes numerous disguises4 ,it appears in many phases of our daily lives4 ,it has done more to wreck careers and ruin happiness than all the wars of history4 ,hordes of earth toilers believe themselves beyond its influence--while all the time it is riding their backs and laughing at them4 ,one reason for this is the common misunderstanding of what fear really is4 ,most people think of it only as fearing to meet certain people1 or fearing some accident may happen to them or their loved ones4 ,yet there are fears of the future1 fears of one's self1 fears of events1 fears of natural phenomena1 fears of old age1 fears of poverty4 ,and there are still more hidden1 stunting fears developed by the un-religious teachings of blind1 bigoted1 crafty ,religion4 ,therefore our higher advance to ,,mastery ,,of ,,self is up the steps of the following #ad lessons1 in which the underlying note is the everlasting declaration1 ,i ,,am ,,courage6 ,,whatever ,,betides1 ,,the ,,true ,,self ,,of ,,me ,,demands ,,courage6 ,dr4 ,haddock will open new views of individual nature1 personal fears1 avenues of self-unfoldment1 which are wholesome and uplifting for you4 ,the following lessons are more than a conquest of fear2 they are ,a ,,great ,,adventure into the heart of a courageous life philosophy4 ,they tear away bond after bond of habit1 thought and action which have smothered your true1 inner ,self4 ,passing the brief ,introductory matter1 you start in lesson one-- ,the ,world's ,new ,dawn1 laying the foundation for ,courage-power4 ,dr4 ,haddock first makes it clear why man is steadily becoming more free--why darkening1 dreadful1 shackling fear is being dispelled from the world4 ,his second lesson analyzes ,fear and ,reason4 ,the third lesson explains why the healthy tone of mind and body is the basis upon which the structure of personal ,courage is to be reared4 ,,announcement4 ,for all may have1 ,if they dare choose1 a glorious life4 --,herbert4 ,i have received many letters from people who are distressed by their fears4 ,to every such an one let me send this assured message3 ,you can grow in your soul a perfect courage4 ,the methods adapted to this ideal are simple1 not impossible to any1 and will become less and less difficult as you continue to make them more and more a real part of your life4 ,i do not say1 ,be courageous4 ,i do not say1 ,destroy your fears4 ,such advice is common enough1 but it is altogether barren unless you know how to carry it out4 ,i hope1 rather1 to present methods which shall be definite and practical1 so that you will be able to do the very thing needful4 ,these methods1 in the large1 ,i now announce as follows3 ,,first ,,method3 ,,the ,,inspiration ,,of ,,the ,,subconscious ,,mind4 ,you are invited1 always through the reading of this book and during life1 to believe1 assume and realize-- ,i ,,am ,,growing ,,in ,,my ,,soul ,a ,,perfect ,,courage4 ,,second ,,method3 ,,the ,,elimination ,,of ,,fear4 ,this is the negative phase of our work4 ,specific instructions will be given having to do with every kind of fear4 ,i shall endeavor to suggest practical help to all readers for each particular difficulty4 ,,third ,,method3 ,,the ,,culture ,,of ,,spiritual ,,courage4 ,by the word spiritual ,i mean not merely religious in the ordinary sense1 but rather that kind of courage which is just the breath and tone of the ,white ,life manifest in the human life4 ,the ,,white ,,life in you is harmony with the ,white ,life which is ,the ,good1 ,the ,beautiful1 ,the ,true1 ,the ,all-,health1 ,the ,father1 ,the ,infinite ,soul of this wonderful ,universe in which we live4 ,if you come to harmony with the ,white ,life1 your fears will vanish because you will then share in the ,courage of the ,eternal ,good4 ,there are two kinds of courage3 ,,the ,,courage ,,that ,,dares ,,and ,,wins2 and ,,the ,,courage ,,that ,,smiles ,,and ,,receives4 ,and shall ,i with a ,giant strive1 ,and charge a ,dragon on the field8 ,in these lines we have the first kind of courage4 ,it is good1 but there is a type which is vastly superior3 ,i ,,am ,,the ,,courage ,,of ,,the ,,soul ,,harmonic ,,with ,,the ,,perfect ,,whole4 ,these lines indicate the second kind of courage--than which there is no higher4 ,herein is love with us made perfect1 that we may have boldness4 ,these are our methods4 ,they are commended to your approval4 ,i shall try to state them plainly1 going on from one fear to another1 and another1 until the long list is disposed of1 and always shall ,i follow details of procedure similar to those set forth in ,,power ,,for ,,success1 the ideal constantly being ,,exactly ,,what ,,to ,,do ,,and ,,how ,,to ,,do ,,exactly ,,that4 ,,foreword4 ,there is no limit to the knowing of the mind that knows4-- ,indian ,upanishads4 ,i wish to indulge in a little ,foreword because in this way may be indicated a warning against contentment with a seemingly very sensible conclusion which will prove1 on further thought1 to be hasty and incomplete4 ,five years ago ,i wrote in this identical place in our study these words3 ,fear will never go out of this world until pleasure loses value1 desire ceases for want of an object1 and reason no longer imposes responsibility4 ,the best gift of ,nature to primitive man1 after reason1 was fear4 ,the imagination is reason's magnifying power4 ,fear observed and obeyed by reason is a friend4 ,fear and reason take care of man4 ,fear and imagination send him into a panic4 ,to many minds these statements will have the look of sanity4 ,but there are others who will instantly perceive that they represent thought on a comparatively low plane4 ,i now observe3 ,the best gift of ,life to primeval man1 after love1 was reason4 ,the imagination1 void of love1--the feeling of harmony with all1-- forgets reason and permits fear to enter the soul4 ,fear is an ,,alien to our life1 and never a friend4 ,the real friend is reason1 acting amid harmonic conditions4 ,when you are threatened by some hostile force or event1 reason tries to induce self-protection1 but you know no real fear if you are saturated with the feeling of harmony4 ,you may believe it is ,,fear that seeks your self-protection4 ,but your ,,reason can do precisely the same thing without fear4 ,fear is1 then1 only an extra1 a distressing extra1 foisted in front of reason4 ,you are invited now to live the ,,white ,,life1 to cast fear out1 and to make real reason its substitute4 ,by so much you will add immeasurably to personal comfort and power4 ,love and reason alone can take care of man1 so far as his own efforts are concerned4 ,in properly blended proportions these constitute the very life of courage4 ,what conceivable service then1 can fear render any man or woman8 ,if you desire panic and distress1 let imagination fill your soul with fears4 ,but if peace1 happiness1 health and power be your desires1 live the ,,white ,,life and hold fast only to reason4 ,by the reality called reason ,i do not mean mere cold calculation and hard logic4 ,such phases of reason are legitimate in their place1 if freed from cunning and deceit1 but the higher reason is to these as a woman's love--look is to the glitter of ice4 ,the higher reason is not alone intellection1 it is also intuition and harmonic assurance--what religious thought calls faith4 ,the higher reason declares self-preservation to be the first law of life1 and then1 just because this is true1 it cares for self and trusts the ,white ,universe to assist4 ,i really do not see what a human soul need actually fear when that soul and the ,white ,universe are bent on the same goal1 the soul's welfare4 ,the ,universe is a growing organism4 ,it is forever striving to realize its own best estate4 ,this is the true goal for all individuals4 ,it is saying the same thing if we affirm the goal to be ,health--for worlds or man3 ,body-,health1 ,mind-,health1 ,self- ,health4 ,when any form of health is threatened1 you say1 perhaps1 it is ,,fear that warns you to self-preservation4 ,but ,i say it is ,,reason1 and your fear-feeling is unnecessary and hurtful4 ,if you can remember that the ,white ,life or ,universe and you have the same desire1 your highest welfare1 you can banish the fear-element1 reserving only the reason-assurance element4 ,all the fears in the world cannot benefit you4 ,harmony and courage will sublime your whole life4 ,i have never known a person whose reason has induced self- suffering4 ,suffer-fear is always a product of diseased imagination4 ,what some may call reason-fear1 when they think they are extremely sensible1 is simply fear1 and nothing but fear1 and it is due to imagination1 not to reason4 ,but1 you say1 are there not all sorts of evils in the world1 and do they not threaten us1 and should we not forefend against them8 ,in this forefending1 how can we escape fear8 ,these questions show how thoroughly fear is knit into our very lives4 ,now this is precisely the point4 ,fear has no rightful place with any rightful living1 because the ,,white ,,life alone is rightful1 and in that life reason-assurance only is possible1 and1 therefore1 rightful4 ,the best way in which to forefend against evil is to deny it and cast out the fiction4 ,this entire question of evil is at your command4 ,evil exists because other people admit its existence4 ,if all were to live the ,,white ,,life1 each person might rightly declare1 ,there is no evil4 ,the only real evil is that which can hurt your best self4 ,when anything hurts your best self1 it is your self that hurts your self4 ,the only evil in the ,universe is some one's act hurting others1 but more1 hurting self4 ,if to you evil is1 then1 it is yourself4 ,you can so live the sublime ,,white ,,life of harmony as to be able to say3 ,so far as ,i am concerned1 evil has gone out of the world4 ,there is no evil to me4 ,you see1 surely now1 that you need not fear evil4 ,i do not know anything more absolutely and sufficiently opposed to the permission of that self-acting which alone1 for you1 is evil1 than reason4 ,fear has nothing properly to do with the matter4 ,and reason-assurance has to do with it only by living the ,,white ,,life and denying fear and evil altogether4 ,you are invited to make these heaven-born truths your own4 ,i ,,am ,,growing ,,in ,,my ,,soul ,a ,,perfect ,,courage4 ,,contents4 onwards1 and take strength from the leaf and the signs of the field4 ,he is indeed despicable who cannot look onwards to the ideal life of man4 ,not to do so is to deny our birthright of mind4--,thomas ,coke ,watkins4 ,i am often asked1 ,do you think the world is really becoming better8 ,my inmost self--the self ,i trust and try to assist--is sure that the world is growing better1 whatever the hampered intellect may from time to time aver4 ,for one thing1 ,i ,,feel that the world's mind is slowly yet swiftly changing its adjustment to one supreme reality--,truth4 ,always have men believed that they desired only the truth1 and always have they sought and found it in part4 ,but then they have immediately wrapped it in packages and stowed it in boxes with elaborate labels4 ,our nature craves reality1 not wrappings and tables of contents4 ,therefore every age has torn off some of the ancient outer things1 and insisted at last on truth alone4 ,more than during all the centuries before1 men today demand reality-- just the essential reality a human soul craves1 and can recognize1 and can use in the building of its life4 ,henry ,drummond spoke of the adjustment which a great telescope needs for photographing the stars4 ,let us think of one fixed star4 ,no adjustment is ever required on behalf of the star4 ,that is one great fixed point in this shifting universe4 ,but the ,,world ,,moves4 ,and each day1 each hour1 demands a further motion and adjustment of the soul4 ,a telescope in an observatory follows a star by clock-work1 but the clock-work of the soul is the ,,will4 ,the world and the man must ,,will ,,to ,,adjust ,,to ,,truth if they would really find and know ,truth4 ,,the ,,world ,,adjusting ,,to ,,truth4 ,i hold that the world to-day1 more perfectly than ever before1 is urging an accurate adjustment of the human soul to truth--that which alone the body demands for health1 the mind for development1 the deeper self for peace and power4 ,the old adjustments no longer satisfy4 ,truth is1 indeed1 eternal1 but our relation must keep pace with it as we swing through the vast heavens of time4 ,the photographs of yesterday do not speak correctly for to-day4 ,we do not deny the stars2 we only deny the science that is past4 ,this adjustment is a huge ,,prayer4 ,it is a request for truth1 in a sense1 but for truth only4 ,and it is an ,,assurance4 ,it expects the truth4 ,now1 that is the best kind of praying ,i know--,expectation in ,adjustment4 ,when you plant your seed or properly place your telescope1 you have created adjustment1 and you expect harvest and picture4 ,,expectation ,,in ,,adjustment ,,is ,,assumption4 ,the world no longer merely ,,asks for truth2 it harmonizes with ,nature and ,life1 and so1 ,,appropriates4 ,the ,world's ,new ,dawn4 ,you are invited to make this thought a lifelong affirmation3 ,,in ,,harmony ,i ,,appropriate ,,all ,,good4 ,such is one of my reasons for believing that the world is growing better4 ,this attitude toward ,truth has influenced for the better every legitimate activity of man4 ,the results are seen in ,benevolence1 ,business1 ,education1 ,government1 ,religion4 ,a new day of splendid1 unhampered1 happy and growing spiritual life is bursting over the earth4 ,souls are coming free4 ,hearts are thrilling with courage4 ,in minds has begun the swing and heave of the sea4 ,i ask you to take the following lines as a symbol of the world's wonderful sense of appropriation that is everywhere evident4 ,the sea1 the pine1 the stars1 the forest deep1 ,bequeath to me at will their subtle wealth4 ,or still days brood1 or rough winds round me sweep1 ,mine is the buoyant earth-man's vibrant health3 ,all things for love of me their vigils keep-- ,i am the soul of health1 of wealth4 ,run1 sea1 in my heart6 ,pine1 sing in my heart6 ,stars1 glow in my heart6 ,for ye are mine1 and my soul1 ,like ye1 is a part ,of the ,marvelous ,whole4 ,there's no thing dear to me is not my wealth1 ,and none that sees me ,i would distant keep2 ,for swift possession is my earth-man's health1 ,or still days brood1 or rough winds round me sweep3 ,all things for love of me their vigils keep-- ,i am the soul of health1 of wealth4 ,you are invited1 now1 to seize and use the spirit of this attitude of appropriation for your own welfare and power4 ,,courage ,,abroad4 ,and ,i hold that our life is growing better for the reason that ,i discover1 in all this new adjustment to truth1 this expectation and assumption that ,good will not withhold itself1 and ,,because of these things1 a new era of courage sweeping the heart of humanity from sea to sea4 ,there is abroad a ,universal ,breath1 manifest of ,life4 ,this breath consists of two general activities1 that of ,denial and that of ,affirmation4 ,courage is a denial of fear and of the reality of fear's cause4 ,but denial is only the beginning2 the really vital thing is confidence in self and in the huge friendly ,universe in which we live4 ,kindly remember this4 ,you are not making progress merely because you turn your back on the ,night4 ,progress means that you also turn face to the ,sun and walk buoyantly into the ,day4 ,courage is affirmation3 ,i am the spirit of the soul ,harmonic with the ,perfect ,whole4 ,why1 the attitude of healthy denial is everywhere apparent4 ,permit me to run over some of the things that are coming more and more to be refused acceptance4 ,you will understand that the items are illustrations only4 ,we are denying3 ,the divine right of kings2 the littleness and unholiness of fundamental human nature2 a ,god who is a kind of huge carpenter2 a ,deity who needs to be appeased2 a ,providence which punishes2 the idea that some people are created for toil and service and others for ease and to be served2 the notion that we must eschew all drugs or depend only on drugs2 the thought which makes disease an entity2 the fancy that the illness of some is a divine will2 the feeling that wealth should not be craved1 or that it exists for a favored few2 the creed that evil is a necessary existence2 the faith that heaven is reserved for the elect who believe a number of things2 the horror of an eternal hell2 the heresy that religion1 the spiritual1 need have anything to do with creeds1 rites or ceremonies2 the feeling that success is only for the favored ones of earth2 and so on1 and so on4 ,these are merely miscellaneous examples of the thousand old-time truths which are now more and more denied4 ,many pages would be required to set forth the ideas and dogmas which are unceasingly and emphatically being rejected1 thoughtfully1 deliberately1 and in a wholesale manner throughout the world of earnest men and women to-day4 ,but when you deny1 it is a great mistake if you do not affirm something better4 ,the breath of courage which is sweeping over the earth1 therefore1 is splendidly declaring for ten thousand deathless realities to take the place of mistaken beliefs4 ,i have space simply for a few illustrations4 ,are we not affirming somewhat as follows at the present time8 ,,signs ,,of ,,the ,,new ,,life4 ,deity is neither ,jew nor ,gentile2 ,he is the ,infinite ,all-,good--the ,eternal ,white ,life4 ,the ,infinite and ,eternal ,white ,life is evolving a ,universe toward the ultimate perfection of absolute harmony4 ,all ,,human ,,beings are in fundamental nature divine4 ,we are here for the purpose of ,,growing ,,to ,,best ,,estate4 ,every man1 woman and child in the world is ,,entitled ,,to ,,health1 ,,happiness1 ,,power4 ,,evil is derangement in individual life induced by individual and world-thought gone wrong4 ,as such derangement evil is real1 but this reality is not necessary or essential1 and it may be banished totally and forever4 ,,disease is dis-easement of the matter of a body induced by dis- easement of soul in a body4 ,the self creates or builds its own body1 and the condition of the self determines the condition of the body4 ,in ,power ,for ,success ,i have stated what ,i believe to be the growing conviction in this regard4 ,the sound body is a perfect material expression of the ,universal ,forces playing into its field1 and its physical character is determined by the psychic character of its owner4 ,in a state of health1 all physical movements must necessarily cooperate harmoniously with one another and with the ,universal ,forces4 ,what we call ,,mind is a collection of powers organized for use by the self1 and these powers are rightly developed only by the good1 the true1 the beautiful4 ,if the feeling of goodness1 or of trueness1 or of beauty1 is deep within the subconscious phase of the self1 mind-life exhibits as mental health4 ,mental health is a universal right4 ,the ,,spirit--not to refine on philosophy--is the real self which builds body and may unfold mind4 ,the highest state of the individual1 therefore1 is religious at the top4 ,this is spirituality4 ,but the only conceivable essential to spirituality is a belief in1 and an intelligent 7truth-using7 surrender to1 the ,white ,life--conceived in one's own way--for harmony and oneness therewith4 ,,happiness consists in being consciously harmonized with the true1 the good and the beautiful4 ,it is not necessary1 however1 although it is1 of course1 better1 to know these words4 ,the child vibrates with goodness without understanding the name goodness4 ,and so on4 ,,power ,,is ,,personality ,,receiving ,,its ,,own ,,in ,,the ,,realms ,,of ,,life4 ,all things exist for all beings4 ,such are some of the realities that are being quietly and potently assumed and affirmed to-day throughout the world4 ,of course the language of assertion will vary with each individual1 but this is immaterial4 ,the essences affirmed are beyond cavil4 ,other illustrations might be given1 but they would be mere phases of that one breath of new hope and courage that is stirring in every land1 to spread contagion on mankind1 of the life which really is4 ,these higher thoughts1 however1 are of the ,dawn only4 ,the full ,day is not yet with us4 ,shadows still there are1 and error1 disease and pain4 ,why must these false realities remain8 ,solely because of three things that linger on3 ,,false ,,thought--,,selfishness--,,fear4 ,and when fear vanishes1 replaced by the ,,white ,,life1 selfishness will die as impossible1 and thought will no longer be false for the reason that only truth will be possessed4 ,if the whole world1 then1 would but thrust out fear and receive the spirit of courage1 ,i do not know any evils that could endure a century4 ,and if you who read these pages will but swing up to the ,,white- ,,life harmony-plane1 ,health1 ,happiness and ,power must be yours as surely as air rushes into a broken vacuum4 ,if you ask1 ,what are the limits of this truth8 ,i answer1 ,i don't know4 ,to speak otherwise would be mere speculation4 ,i affirm the great truth3 ,all things are yours4 ,that ,,you1 if stricken through and through with dis-harmony1 may be ,,able to receive ,,all you crave1 ,i may not affirm4 ,nevertheless1 it is permitted to say3 ,launch out6 ,launch out in the ,new ,thought of ,life1 and receive1 as you do so1 whatever is rightly your own1 as you are increasingly able to do so4 ,man has banished many of his fears already4 ,it is not a long run of the centuries since he quaked before the gloom of the forest1 the solitude of the hills1 the fog of the vast sea1 and1 creating innumerable gods and devils by that wizard of distortion1 the imagination1 lodged them in every object of existence under and in the heavens4 ,he has gotten rid of these4 ,but when we observe the fear of water1 the fear of tornadoes1 the fear of lightning1 the fear of fire1 the fear of disease1 the fear of accident1 the fear of death1 the fear of ridicule1 the fear of public opinion1 the fear of bankruptcy1 the fear of self1 the fear for self1 the fear of others1 the fear of failure1 the fear of devils1 the fear of a vindictive ,god1 the fear of the future1 the fear of a hell--,oh1 then1 we know that the sun of light is not at his meridian height4 ,we can yet get rid of these also4 ,this is one of the world's tasks4 ,this is your task1 if you would make the most of your self and life4 ,there is yet very much land to be possessed4 ,no one will possess all of that land in the present stage of existence4 ,some will be able to claim more than others1 but they will err if they assume themselves to be favorites1 and the others will do worse than err if they complain1 ,we1 alas1 are down on our luck4 ,be assured of one thing3 all may be rid of their fears and the whole mass of distress induced by fears4 ,all may acquire dauntless yet serene courage4 ,in that state1 if it be of the highest1 as it may be1 will come to them a peace1 a happiness1 an influx of buoyancy1 a confidence1 a sense of well-being1 the like of which they have never known4 ,,prime ,,denials ,,and ,,affirmations4 ,you who now read this page are1 thus1 invited to begin our study by denying and affirming1 as follows3 ,,first--,,the ,,daily ,,regime ,,of ,,denial3 ,i deny the existence of error1 so far as ,i am concerned4 ,i deny disease to be my necessary portion4 ,i deny the need of any of my fears4 ,i deny the reality of any cause for fear4 ,i deny that ,i am less than a king4 ,i deny that ignorance is an essential part of my lot4 ,i deny that poverty is decreed to me4 ,i deny that ,i am low-born or of bad blood4 ,i deny that ,i am down on my luck4 ,i deny by my life that others are my superiors4 ,i deny that anything can hurt the essential ,,me4 ,i deny a vindictive ,god4 ,i deny that slavery is religious4 ,i deny that ,i am not the friend of the ,white ,life4 ,i deny that ,i am mean1 low or ignoble in morals4 ,i deny that my best life depends on creeds4 ,i deny that the ,universe is not for me4 ,i deny that health is not my rightful claim4 ,i deny that ,i am unhappy or depressed4 ,i deny that ,i am weak and a nonentity4 ,i deny that ,i shall not unfold forever4 ,i deny all that is opposed to my best welfare4 ,,second--,,the ,,daily thousands of people have felt similarly at first1 have then caught a glimpse of the truth here and there1 and finally have experienced a wondrous recognition of the ,new ,dawn which has now surely come to the world4 ,it is significant that these are saying1 ,there is nothing else worth while in the whole earth4 ,two men were scraping paint from a house preparatory to putting on4 a new coat of color1 ,one of them who had been helped back from mental unbalance1 and helped solely by thought1 broke a long silence and said3 ,this is the whole thing4 ,he referred to the dawn of ,real ,life in himself4 ,if1 now1 this chapter has seemed to broach the subject of religion1 remember1 it does not deal with religion as you perhaps know religion4 ,the only thing valuable in religion is the ,white ,life within the human self4 ,that alone is religion4 ,call it what you will4 ,and it means just that courage which makes us buoyantly equal to any kind of life that is right4 ,the methods of this book will prove of value to you1 whether or no you go into the ,,white- ,,life phase of existence4 ,but they will realize completest value if you will swing at the start clean out into the one ,mind--,man1 whole6 --,,the ,,author4 ,,chapter ,,ii4 ,,fear ,,and ,,reason4 ,in civilized life it has at last become possible for large numbers of people to pass from the cradle to the grave without ever having had a pang of genuine fear4 ,many of us need an attack of mental disease to teach us the meaning of the word4--,william ,james4 ,we have all heard the seemingly discriminating remarks that fear is normal and abnormal1 and that normal fear is to be regarded as a friend1 while abnormal fear should be destroyed as an enemy4 ,the fact is that no so--called normal fear can be named which has not been clearly absent in some people who have had every cause therefor4 ,if you will run over human history in your mind1 or look about yea in the present life1 you will find here and there persons who1 in situations or before objects which ought1 as any fearful soul will insist1 to inspire the feeling of at least normal self-protecting fear1 are nevertheless wholly without the feeling4 ,they possess every feeling and thought demanded except fear4 ,the idea of self-preservation is as strongly present as with the most abjectly timid or terrified1 but fear they do not know4 ,this ,,fearless awareness of fear--suggesting conditions may be due to several causes4 ,it may result from constitutional make-up1 or from long--continued training or habituation1 or from religious ecstasy1 or from a perfectly calm sense of spiritual selfhood which is unhurtable1 or from the action of very exalted reason4 ,whatever the explanation1 the fact remains3 the very causes which excite fear in most of us1 merely appeal1 with such people1 if at all4 to the instinct of self-preservation and to reason1 the thought-element of the soul which makes for personal peace and wholeness4 ,,banish ,,all ,,fear4 ,it is on such considerations that ,i have come to hold that all real fear-,,feeling should and may be banished from our life1 and that what we call normal fear should be substituted in our language by instinct or by reason1 the element of fear being dropped altogether4 ,everyone can testify that the psychical state called fear consists of mental representations of certain painful results 7,james74 ,the mental representations may be very faint as such1 but the idea of hurt to self is surely present4 ,if1 then1 it can be profoundly believed that the real self cannot be hurt2 if the reason can be brought to consider vividly and believingly all quieting considerations2 if the self can be held consciously in the assurance that the ,white ,life surrounds the true self1 and is surely within that self1 and will suffer no evil to come nigh1 while all the instincts of self--preservation may be perfectly active1 fear itself must be removed as far as the east is from the west4 ,this splendid conviction ,i earnestly commend to all readers4 ,these are the ways1 then1 in which any occasion for fear may be divided3 ,as a warning and as a maker of panic4 ,but let us say that the warning should be understood as given to reason1 that fear need not appear at all1 and that the panic is perfectly useless pain4 ,with these discriminations in mind1 we may now go on to a ,,preliminary ,,study ,,of ,,fear4 ,fear is 7a7 an impulse1 7b7 a habit1 7c7 a disease4 ,fear1 as it exists in man1 is a make-believe of sanity1 a creature of the imagination1 a state of insanity4 ,furthermore1 fear is1 now of the nerves1 now of the mind1 now of the moral consciousness4 ,the division depends upon the point of view4 ,what is commonly called normal fear should give place to ,,reason1 using the word to cover instinct as well as thought4 ,from the correct point of view all fear is an evil so long as entertained4 ,whatever its manifestations1 wherever its apparent location1 fear is a psychic state1 of course1 reacting upon the individual in several ways3 as1 in the nerves1 in mental moods1 in a single impulse1 in a chronic habit1 in a totally unbalanced condition4 ,the reaction has always a good intention1 meaning1 in each case1 ,take care6 ,danger6 ,you will see that this is so if you will look for a moment at three comprehensive kinds of fear--fear of self1 fear for self1 fear for others4 ,fear ,,of self is indirectly fear ,,for self--danger4 ,fear for others signifies foresensed or forepictured distress to self because of anticipated misfortune to others4 ,i often wonder whether1 when we fear ,,for others1 it is distress ,,to ,,self or hurt to ,,them that is most emphatically in our thought4 ,fear1 then1 is usually regarded as the soul's danger signal4 ,but the true signal is instinctive and thoughtful reason4 ,even instinct and reason1 acting as warning1 may perform their duty abnormally1 or assume abnormal proportions4 ,and then we have the ,,feeling of fear4 ,the normal warning is induced by actual danger apprehended by mind in a state of balance and self-control4 ,normal mind is always capable of such warning4 ,there are but two ways in which so-called normal fear1 acting in the guise of reason1 may be annihilated3 by the substitution of reason for fear1 and by the assurance of the ,,white ,,life4 ,let it be understood1 now1 that by normal fear is here meant normal reason--real fear being denied place and function altogether4 ,then we may say that such action of reason is a benefactor to man4 ,it is1 with pain and weariness1 the philanthropy of the nature of things within us4 ,one person said3 ,tired8 ,no such word in my house6 ,now this cannot be a sound and healthy attitude4 ,weariness1 at a certain stage of effort1 is a signal to stop work4 ,when one becomes so absorbed in labor as to lose consciousness of the feeling of weariness1 he has issued a hurry call on death4 ,i do not deny that the soul may cultivate a sublime sense of buoyancy and power2 rather do ,i urge you to seek that beautiful condition2 but ,i hold that when a belief or a hallucination refuses to permit you to hear the warning of nerves and muscles1 ,nature will work disaster inevitably4 ,let us stand for the larger liberty which is joyously free to take advantage of everything ,nature may offer for true well-being4 ,there is a partial liberty which tries to realize itself by denying various realities as real2 there is a higher liberty which really realizes itself by conceding such realities as real and by using or disusing them as occasion may require in the interest of the self at its best4 ,i hold this to be true wisdom3 to take advantage of everything which evidently promises good to the self1 without regard to this or that theory1 and freely to use all things1 material or immaterial1 reasonable or spiritual4 ,i embrace your science or your method2 but ,i beg to ignore your bondage to philosophy or to consistency4 ,so ,i say that to normal health the weary-sense is a rational command to replenish exhausted nerves and muscles4 ,it is not liberty1 it is not healthful1 to declare1 ,there is no pain6 ,pain does exist1 whatever you affirm1 and your affirmation that it does not is proof that it does exist1 for why 7and ,,how7 declare the non-existence of that which actually is non-existent8 ,but if you say1 ,as a matter of fact ,i have pain1 but ,i am earnestly striving to ignore it1 and to cultivate thought-health so that the cause of pain may be removed1 that is sane and beautiful4 ,this is the commendable attitude of the ,bible character who cried3 ,lord1 ,i believe2 help thou mine unbelief4 ,to undertake swamping pain with a cloud of psychological fog--that is to turn anarchist against the good government of ,nature4 ,by pain ,nature informs the individual that he is somewhere out of order4 ,this warning is normal4 ,the feeling becomes abnormal in the mind when imagination twangs the nerves with reiterated irritation1 and ,will1 confused by the discord and the psychic chaos1 cowers and shivers with fear4 ,i do not say there is no such thing as fear4 ,fear does exist4 ,but it exists in your life by your permission only1 not because it is needful as a warning against evil4 ,fear is induced by unduly magnifying actual danger1 or by conjuring up fictitious dangers through excessive and misdirected psychical reactions4 ,this also may be taken as a signal of danger1 but it is a falsely-intentioned witness1 for it is not needed1 is hostile to the individual because it threatens self-control and it absorbs life's forces in useless and destructive work when they ought to be engaged in creating values4 ,hence we state ,,the ,,first ,,great ,,principle ,,of ,,fear-,,conquest4 ,timidity1 apprehension1 fear1 alarm1 fright1 consternation1 terror1 panic1 desperation1 are all false imitations of reason's interpretation of the warning signals of ,nature1 to be displaced by reason itself1 which may then determine whether the occasion be real or unreal1 and always to be disregarded and overcome if evidently refering to causes which do not actually exist4 ,this principle is adduced in the interest of three things3 peace1 health1 power4 ,you are invited to note how vital these interests really are4 ,the truest peace1 of which courage is a sublime bloom1 is a growth solely of honorable living and robust self-respect4 ,health is of the following realities3 body1 mind1 soul--the deeper self4 ,health is soundness4 ,a sound human is a triune wholeness4 ,physical soundness with weak intellect is often the athletic field of superstitions innumerable4 ,intellectual greed in an unsound body may breed the direst fears of life4 ,a decayed soul is always a ,house of ,fear4 ,the ideal of human existence is--,the white life in the sound mind in the vibrantly whole body4 ,it is because there are so many people who are in some sense sick1 that fears abound in every direction4 ,but--it is because so many fears are permitted and actually nursed as boons that so many sick people abound in every direction4 ,if all our fears could be removed absolutely1 we should no longer require physicians4 ,this world would be a paradise in every respect4 ,i do not know anything wrong with it that cannot be traced to a fear4 ,the causes of fear are weak reason1 uncontrolled imagination1 want of self-control1 and ill-health4 ,and the first three items are really phases of the last4 ,the ability to master and destroy fear depends1 it would now seem1 upon the following factors of our life3 ,the ,general ,tone of the ,individual2 ,the ,soul's ,power of ,will2 ,the ,development and ,balance of the ,reason4 ,reason is demanded to distinguish between right and wrong causes for personal effort in self-protection1 and to utterly ignore all wrong causes4 ,will-power is demanded to banish fears and to utilize reason's dictates4 ,but the sway of reason and the force of action are always immensely assisted by a vigorous general tone of the personal life4 ,now appear1 in view of these considerations1 ,,three ,,great ,,laws4 ,,first ,,law3 ,the warnings of reason are based in the nature of things within us1 and are universal benefactors4 ,,second ,,law3 ,fear is contrary to the ground-plan of life4 ,it is no primary part of the nature of things2 it is an alien in the world- system4 ,,third ,,law3 ,the destruction of fear always follows the growth of general courage in the individual4 ,the fear-brood will not depart until the soul has acquired a fixed habit of courage4 ,whatever establishes that habit1 or spirit1 secures the service of reason- instinct1 and so undermines and finally destroys the power of every variety of fear4 ,these laws formulate a great ,,primary ,,injunction4 ,let your soul be saturated1 with the sure conviction that fear is an alien in the world-system of life1 having no proper place nor legitimate rights therein1 and meanwhile resolutely set about the task of cultivating in every possible way the permanent habit- spirit of courageous living4 ,this book was written for the sole purpose of suggesting definite methods by which such courage-habit may be developed4 ,in order that our practical methods may be understood1 it is now necessary to analyze the subject of fear in its general outlines4 ,it is important to remember that the warnings of reason1 sometimes called normal fears1 may have actual causes outside the mind and are rightly proportioned thereto and to possible consequences1 while real fear is due to causes not based in reality1 or1 if so based1 is permitted to agitate the mind in a way not warranted by possible consequences viewed by a rational1 well-balanced life4 ,our analysis1 then1 exhibits fear where reason ought to appear1 in ,a ,,general ,,enumeration ,,of ,,fear-,,causes4 ,fear of hurt of self by self 7fear of self73 substitute reason1 thus--just estimate2 no cause2 cause magnified4 ,fear of hurt of self by outer things 7fear for self73 substitute reason1 thus--just estimate2 no cause2 cause magnified4 ,fear of threat by things3 substitute reason1 thus--right cause2 no cause2 cause magnified4 ,threat by others3 substitute reason1 thus--right cause2 no cause2 cause magnified4 ,threat to others3 substitute reason1 thus--right cause2 no cause2 cause magnified4 ,threat by events3 substitute reason1 thus--right cause2 no cause2 cause magnified4 ,threat by the future3 substitute reason1 thus--right cause2 no cause2 cause magnified4 ,you are invited to work out the particulars of this analysis1 and to examine them with reference to your self and life4 ,you will make some important discoveries4 ,one of the many questions suggested is this3 ,is the cause of anticipated possible consequences justly estimated in your thought--is it a right cause--is it really as you suppose8 ,the idea is that you think of any one of your fears and then ask the question in the form just indicated4 ,thus we may have the following statement of ,,kinds ,,of ,,fears4 ,fear of ,self3 timidity1 lack of confidence1 possible unaccountable states4 ,fear for ,self3 weakness1 anticipated failure1 imagined disgrace4 ,fear of ,things3 animals1 inanimate objects1 physical forces4 ,fear of ,others3 human beings1 apparitions1 devils1 ,deity4 ,fear for ,others3 children1 parents1 husband1 wife1 relatives1 friends1 strangers4 ,fear of ,events3 present1 future1 imaginary1 possible1 probable1 contingent4 ,fear of the ,future3 in life2 beyond the present life4 ,instinct and reason strive to place us in right relations with all these causes4 ,the existence in us of fear shows that we already are1 either in mind or in fact1 in wrong relations therewith4 ,the mastery of fear involves the discovery of right relations1 mental or concrete1 and the placing of self in those right conditions which are determined and provided for by the ground- plan of our nature4 ,and the first thing thus provided for is health4 ,all treatment for the conquest of our universal enemy must begin with development of individual tone3 tone of body1 tone of mind1 tone of the deeper self4 ,i am not writing for those who are constitutionally fearless1 but ,i have in mind all who do yield to the feeling of fear4 ,our ideal1 however1 is not a mere animal courage1 not the courage of insensibility4 ,it is rather the courage of the whole man or woman making for the ,,white ,,life4 ,if you are only partially yourself1 you cannot possess the highest courage4 ,such courage may be yours1 infallibly1 if you will but resolve for the goal and go on into the great ideals of the harmonic personality4 ,this you can do-- anyone can do4 ,and to come thereto is the greatest thing in the world4 ,you are invited1 then1 to begin by substituting in your thought the idea of self-preserving reason for any kind of fear 7even the so-called normal7 as your perpetual guard and guide4 ,make it a profound conviction of your deepest self that no real harm can come to that self because you have entered the highway of the ,,white ,,life--,,the ,,life ,,of ,,purity1 ,,reason1 ,,honor1 ,,good-,,will1 ,,and ,,confident higher to balance unstable ,in beauty of male and in exquisite female1 ,and sends through the intricate meshwork of cells-- ,sheer matter1 kin of this quartz-- ,its evidence3 light-hue1 radiance crimson1 ,eye-gleam1 pulse-throb1 vigor and nerve-thrill ,of just that common1 miraculous ,gift1 ,,health of a body wherein dwells soul4 ,,there1 say ,i1 the ,infinite worked well6 ,come now to ,,you the artisan's skill for this marvel1 ,physical man3 to refine and ennoble2 ,to reveal the inclosure of spirit unmarred1 ,and grow in the mobile1 responsive flesh ,mind perfect1 held fast in ,,our ,crystal superb1 ,the ,universe complete4 --,,the ,,author4 ,,chapter ,,iii4 ,,physical ,,tone4 ,in the healthy body every cell is polarized in subjection to the ,central ,will4 ,perfect health1 therefore1 is orderly obedience1 government and harmony4 ,every cell is a living entity1 whether of vegetable or animal potency1 and wherever disease is1 there are disunion1 error1 rebellion and insubordination2 and the deeper the seat of the confusion1 the more dangerous the malady and the harder to quell it4--,j4 ,c4 ,street4 ,the thought of the above quotation does not mean that the insubordination is necessarily conscious to the diseased individual1 but that it surely obtains within the physical arena of his life4 ,because it is not the outcome of his deliberate choice1 the case is not hopeless in the nature of things1 but is open to better conditions4 ,the deeper self which has intended no rebellion against the laws of bodily well-being may now distinctly intend harmony1 and so lift the body to a higher plane4 ,and the last sentence in the quotation does not mean that you are to undertake a vast amount of hard work1 assuming that you are not in perfect physical condition4 ,you are1 rather1 just to begin and go on thinking yourself in a real way as in harmony with the ,central ,will1 which is our ,white ,life1 and to hold steadfastly in the deeper self the ideas1 ,affirmation and ,realization of ,splendid ,personal ,tone4 ,some of the meanings of these powerful words will be unfolded later1 ,in the meantime1 as all things are subject to law1 let us observe a number of the general conditions to three-fold health1 that of body1 mind and the inner self1 regarding their totality as the atmosphere1 so to speak1 in which courage most easily and perfectly thrives4 ,fear in man is a result of repeated suggestion1 to which low health-tone is a natural invitation4 ,health is the primary tonic against fear4 ,perfect physical health is mere strength4 ,perfect mental health is mere brain sanity4 ,perfect soul-health is the whole of the man at his best4 ,when the body is buoyant1 the mind clear and inspired1 the soul harmonic with all existence rightly in the universe1 then is the impulse of fear easily mastered and the habit of fear finds no encouragement4 ,there are1 indeed1 courageous invalids who have not come into the secret of right thought so far as health is concerned1 and fearing atheltes and scholars who have neglected the secret of courage1 and timorous saints who have failed to possess themselves of the confidence of goodness4 ,nevertheless1 the eternal law is evident that the one great enemy of fear is ,the ,white ,life in ,harmonic ,mind in ,buoyant ,body4 ,a person who affirms and realizes these conditions must1 in the nature of things1 be possessed of perfect health4 ,in the tone of such health courage is inevitable4 ,that you may come to this ideal1 you are invited to observe the following instructions4 ,health is a trinity1 and we may begin our studies with its natural basis3 ,,the ,,general ,,tone ,,op ,,health4 ,the word tone means1 sound in relation to volume1 quality1 duration and pitch1 then1 peculiar characteristic sound as of a voice or instrument1 then1 characteristic style or tendency1 predominating aim or character1 tenor1 strain1 spirit4 ,hence1 in the sense of health1 tone signifies the state of tension or firmness proper to the tissues of the body2 the state in which all the parts and organs have due tension or are well strung2 the strength and activity of the organs on which healthy functions depend2 that state of the body in which all the normal functions are performed with healthy vigor4 ,we thus see that health-tone involves the whole personality1 physical1 mental and moral4 ,but the truth of the matter hides in a deeper region than that of mere material flesh or organ4 ,matter is a form of the ,universal ,ether1 so far as science seems to declare1 or1 at least1 matter presupposes the ether in a state of vibration4 ,your body is a field in which etheric vibrations are constantly taking place4 ,all its reality and all its activities involve such vibrations4 ,the brain1 regarded as the organ of conscious life1 of thought and feeling1 and the entire nervous system1 involve such vibrations4 ,and as your thought and feeling constitute the foundation of your moral character1 the latter also becomes a matter of movements in the ether4 ,in the case of heat1 light1 electricity1 etc41 differing kinds of such vibrations determine the kinds of phenomena4 ,we may say1 then1 that there is one general kind of ether-movement for matter1 and another for thought and feeling1 and another for the moral life4 ,each individual1 however1 presents variations of these general kinds of vibrations1--a particular variation for his body1 and for his mental person1 and for his right or wrong self-spirit4 ,we individualize the ether1 ,or1 we are individualized as we use the ether4 ,the tone of a person's health is determined by the state of the etheric movements characteristic to himself4 ,if the vibrations underlying the body life are full and harmonious according to their individual character for a person1 his organs are all sound and active4 ,he possesses physical tone4 ,if there is a similar fullness and harmony within his mental life1 he must exhibit health of mind4 ,if a corresponding condition obtains in the moral personality1 the highest health of the deeper self prevails4 ,these three individualized varieties of ether-movement in man mutually interact and determine one another's character4 ,i know that this law does not always seem to operate4 ,poor minds and wrong morals are sometimes found in apparently healthy bodies1 and great minds and noble spirits in feeble bodies4 ,but the bodies of the one class do ,,not represent the finest physical health1 involving coarseness1 flabbiness1 susceptibility to disorder1 etc41 etc41 and are not contradictions of the law4 ,moreover1 the inner life is not always fully expressed by apparent departures from right living3 as you may frequently see in some sudden burst of nobility1 generosity1 tenderness1 heroism1 in those who possess sound bodies but are outwardly not particularly refined4 ,the rough exterior may hide a splendid germ of true spiritual manhood or womanhood4 ,could we look deeply into the physical nature1 we should always find the law holding good that our three-fold ether- movements do influence and in the long run determine one another for weal or ill4 ,where the inner self is right yet the physical tone weak or disturbed1 we should perceive1 if we had the spirit of discernment1 that the better life within has surely influenced and ennobled the essential nature of the body4 ,it should be remembered that two confusing factors prevail where a fine spirit dwells in a diseased body3 first1 the thought-life of centuries has1 so to speak1 warped the character of the inherited body and its vibrations to such an extent that they may not1 perhaps 7,i do not know71 be altogether reformed within a human lifetime2 secondly1 the thought-life of the individual1 however nearly right in many respects1 is wrong in one particular1 the belief1 feeling1 conviction--an inheritance of ages--that disease of the body must necessarily obtain in some cases at least1 no matter what the inner life may be4 ,this conviction is a tremendous force for harm4 ,invalids accept it as true1 and try to be reconciled4 ,but it is not true4 ,the belief prevails1 and so prevents the real truth from appearing3 that ,,perfect ,,health ,,is ,,the ,,primary ,,intention ,,of ,,the ,,nature ,,of ,,things ,,for ,,all4 ,when we can believe this magnificent truth1 we shall be able to see that right vibrations underlying the mental and moral personality must tend to reform wrong vibrations underlying the body4 ,so long as the former conviction prevails1 that disease is somehow a part of ,nature1 the better life contends with a double difficulty1 the existing physical conditions and the false suggestion that the individual must continue to be ill in the nature of things or as the will of ,deity4 ,the false suggestion should be displaced by the affirmation and realization of physical health4 ,such a reforming suggestion1 made effective by mental realization and proper regimes1 tends to counteract the existing effects of previous wrong suggestions and positively to change conditions of ill-health1 because fullness and harmony of the three kinds of ether-movements are the designed ideals of our lives and the laws of perfect well-being 7what other design can we possibly imagine871 and the good suggestion operates to bring about that ideal4 ,let us be rid of the notion that anyone is ill because a ,divine ,being wants him to be ill4 ,but we must remember that while these principles cannot be otherwise than true1 every individual has behind him1 at any present moment1 two great forces--the past of his ancestors and the past of his own life4 ,let us be sensible1 even while we insist upon truths which are among the most beautiful in the world4 ,the past means much to all of us4 ,such is law4 ,we cannot get away from law1 whatever our theories or religious belief4 ,to me all ,nature's laws are of the ,white ,life and untellably beneficent4 ,the idea that law is something hard and disagreeable is itself a false suggestion and a wrong thought4 ,law is good4 ,the law that life is determined more or less by the past is a fine example of this goodness4 ,if it seems to go against us in some cases1 it surely goes for us in assisting a right past to make for a right future4 ,when it seems to work hardship1 the fact is the law is trying to face us about for a right time to come4 ,that is the meaning of experience3 it is law talking1 to us out of our past4 ,the law that our past and that of our ancestors must be reckoned with in all our efforts to reform the etheric vibrations in our personal fields involves the element of time1 which element may be greater than we can control in the material life4 ,this element of time is important because there is another law1 that great real reforms in the individual require effort continued more or less in order that all laws involved may properly and fully operate4 ,if the person who is a noble self in a weak body could add to his thought-life the sufficiently powerful affirming realization of physical health for himself and live long enough1 ,i certainly believe the suggestion would ultimately prevail4 ,for ,i do not for a moment accept disease as a necessary part of human life4 ,is disorder in your machinery a part of the machine8 ,i cannot see how a continuously perfect self1 starting with a sound body1 could ever come to possess a diseased body4 ,i must believe that the self1 growing to the ideal1 may bring into harmony a diseased body1 provided its health-suggestion is strong enough and sufficient time is afforded for the full working of the law4 ,the law does not1 of course1 cover such cases as broken bones1 because treatment then calls for mechanical operations1 which involve laws altogether distinct from those that govern harmony among the functions and organs of the body as underfounded by etheric vibrations within the physical1 mental and moral fields4 ,the limits set to self-healing power we do not know for any individual case4 ,the splendid general law is not overwhelmed1 is not contradicted1 by such limits1 whatever they may be1 because the limits are not set by the original intention of the nature of things1 but by wrong living and false ideas running through centuries4 ,as we may not know the limits in any case1 and as the great law shines ever before us and is equally for all so far as it may be claimed1 and not for a favored few of some particular religious or semi-religious belief1 it is ours to seize all advantages afforded by the best medical science together with every atom of power in the white life affirming and realizing physical health at its best4 ,you do not know your own limits2 therefore lay hold upon the law1 the universal1 age-long law1 for all you can derive from its beneficence4 ,you are not required to turn your back upon any other advantage1 but only to swing the law into harmony with that advantage4 ,health-tone1 then1 is really a triune series of full and harmonious ether-movements within the personal field working together for a buoyant right self in a sane and truth-loving mind in a spiritually expressing physical organism4 ,by so much as it is yours1 by so much1 in the nature of the case1 must fear be an alien and courage the breath of your life4 ,we may now go on to the general consideration of ,,physical ,,tone4 ,it would seem almost unnecessary to suggest the ordinary regimes for health of body4 ,nevertheless1 ,i shall refer to these regimes because1 first1 their importance cannot be overestimated1 and secondly because they involve certain laws of laws in relation to health which are seldom worked out in hygienic instruction4 ,what may be called the laws of laws of health would seem to be as follows3 #a4 ,scrupulous ,cleanliness of the ,body1 ,without and ,within1 ,makes for ,royal ,health-,tone4 ,the law should be given rational1 not slavish1 obedience4 ,your body and your deeper self are in a constant state of interaction4 ,material uncleanness consented to contaminates that self4 ,uncleanness of the self also contaminates the body4 ,the white life requires the clean dress of honored flesh4 ,you are invited1 therefore1 to affirm always and practically1 ,this robe ,i wear of unsoiled flesh ,keeps mind and spirit ever fresh4 #b4 ,sweet1 ,sound and ,early ,sleep ,gives the ,universal ,forces their ,perfect ,opportunity for ,good4 ,during sleep the ,universal ,thought strives to restore1 as our conditions permit1 harmony of vibrations between its manifests in matter within the body and its manifests in the non-material self4 ,the degree of harmony is made less in all cases by centuries of wrong living1 the effects of which are more or less accumulated by inheritance in every man and woman 7right living1 however1 promising in the future perfect freedom there-from on earth71 and by the disturbing power of individual wrong living4 ,in order1 then1 to secure the best results of sleep1 our waking thought should be kept in attune1 by all practical as well as by all idealizing methods1 with reality1 truth1 beauty and goodness4 ,you are invited1 for the reason suggested1 to live during the day in such a manner that your last fearless thought at night may be1 ,let my soul walk softly in me1 ,like a saint in heaven unshod1 ,for to be alone with ,silence ,is to be alone with ,god4 #c4 ,the ,utility of ,nourishment ,issues ,from ,conformity to the ,plan of the ,universal ,forces for ,each ,individual4 ,for every human body there is a plan on which it is intended to be evolved and maintained4 ,the individual plan is merely a variation of the general plan of our common human nature4 ,that general plan provides for certain foods and kinds of drink1 for the manner in which they are to be taken and digested1 and for their utilization in building and sustaining the body4 ,this general plan is varied for different persons in the primary intention of the nature of things4 ,your food and drink1 therefore1 should depend upon your own peculiar needs4 ,the science of the matter investigates the kinds of nourishment which you in particular require and advises all items furnishing the material elements you demand4 ,but some individual variations1 in respect to questions of taste1 usefulness and harmfulness1 digestibility and adaptation1 are undoubtedly results of restrained liberty and wrong thought-life in the past1 either of your ancestors or of yourself4 ,that degree of liberty1 therefore1 which ought to be yours1 has perhaps1 come to be more or less limited4 ,it is possible for you to secure a desirable enlargement of freedom with regard to food and drink4 ,of course you have no liberty in the way of natural poisons and beverages which dethrone common sense4 ,aside from the limits set by ,nature1 you may acquire the largest measure of personal freedom in the matter if you will determine therefor in the exercise of sound reason4 ,i have had my experience with things not liked and things harmful--apricots1 chickens1 salmon---and today ,i eat all that's eatable by civilized man1 and ,i drink whatever ,i choose to drink--alcohol tabooed because ,i want and need all the brains ,i possess4 ,it is for you to bring yourself more nearly to the original plan for human bodies in this respect1 if you will begin with your inner thought-life and proceed more or less in the following manner3 7a74 ,by insisting upon a ,,larger ,,freedom1 not in the way of demanding one thing or another1 but in the way of realizing in your deeper self the idea of power therefor2 7b74 ,by endeavoring constantly to bring your thought-life more and more into ,,harmony ,,with ,,the ,,white ,,life ,,in ,,nature2 7c74 ,by affirming that the food and drink of which you partake will surely ,,make ,,for ,,health and buoyancy of the body2 not merely stating the proposition1 but1 while so partaking1 believing the truth and assuming it to be true--actual for you2 7d74 ,by manifesting at all times the mood of blended ,,courage1 ,,hope1 ,,confidence1 ,,happiness2 #d4 ,,the ,,value ,,of ,,work ,,and ,,play ,,is ,,the ,,outcome ,,of ,,balancing ,,reactions ,,or ,,restorations ,,among ,,our ,,personal ,,activities4 ,if we conceive of any individual as a field of vibrations in matter and the ether1 induced by muscular and nervous action and by feeling and thought1 we see at once that there ought to be an ideal field in which all such vibrations are in a state of harmony4 ,the state indicated would be a condition of balance4 ,when activities in one direction are over intense and unduly prolonged1 all vibrations tend to a strain in that direction4 ,such strain-- all in one direction--is not normal1 because it signifies disturbance of balance4 ,if harmony in the field is to be restored1 the one direction-strain must be released so that all right activities may recur and all vibrations proper to the field may again take place4 ,always the ideal is general harmony throughout the personal field4 ,now1 some of the activities of our life are normally those of work1 inducing corresponding vibrations in the individual field1 and some of them are normally those of recreation1 which is a true word because it means recreation1 that is1 action or rest inducing corresponding vibration differing from those of work1 running1 so to speak1 in different directions1 and so restoring harmony4 ,work and recreation are1 therefore1 equally essential to the normal life4 ,we have1 however1 built up wrong ideas of each of these important functions1 so that most of us distinguish work as essentially different in its basic nature from recreation1 and more or less an evil1 and distinguish recreation as altogether and in itself a good4 ,both ideas are surely erroneous4 ,i know that too much work1 and work under certain conditions1 cannot be regarded as a good in itself4 ,precisely the same is true of recreation4 ,neither1 then1 is to be valued or condemned because of the kind of activities involved or vibrations induced1 but always and solely with reference to the state of balance or harmony represented in the field of the personal self4 ,the limit of permitted work should be determined by that question alone2 work should always be offset1 so to speak1 by recreation4 ,the limit of recreation permitted should be determined by the same question4 ,it should always be offset by work4 ,in other words1 the value of either work or play consists in change of activities restoring balance in the personal field4 ,but work and recreation are not essentially different in their true nature4 ,in both cases we have activities and vibrations4 ,in all cases some portion of the body is involved4 ,in all cases some features of the mind are active4 ,action in either case is called work or recreation according to the idea entertained regarding it4 ,if the idea is that of ,,task1 the thing is work4 ,if the idea is ,,relaxation1 the thing is recreation4 ,i have taken the task-idea into recreation1 and soon wearied4 ,i have taken the recreation- idea into work1 and have been obliged to call self to account under that law of balance or harmony4 ,a boy1 for example1 is sawing wood alone3 this is work4 ,neighboring boys join him1 and soon invest the whole place with imagination1 all busy sawing1 splitting1--playing4 ,it is the idea--that is1 the real thought1 which determines the names we give the two general sets of activities4 ,nature will check work-vibrations and restore recreation-vibrations1 ,,for ,a ,,time1 until harmony of the field is comparatively restored1 if only suggestion use the magic word4 ,you are now invited to maintain1 ,,in ,,all ,,your ,,work1 ,,the ,,idea ,,of ,,harmony ,,with ,,the ,,universal ,,forces ,,of ,,nature1 and the inspiration of the idea that your ,,work ,,is ,,good and is building your self to better4 ,you are invited also to maintain1 ,,in ,,all ,,your ,,recreation1 ,,the ,,idea ,,of ,,harmony ,,with ,,the ,,universal ,,forces and the inspiration of the thought that ,,your ,,recreation ,,is ,,good and is building your self to better4 #e4 ,,purity ,,in ,,the ,,sex-,,life ,,charges ,,the ,,personal ,,field ,,with ,,the ,,magnetic ,,power ,,of ,,the ,,universal ,,forces4 ,in this respect the individual should be as a god4 ,the human body is designed for ,temple-,presence of the ,infinite ,white ,life4 ,epicurus regarded it as a husk1 but ,aristotle defined the soul as the perfect expression of the body1 meaning1 not that the soul is a product of physiological conditions1 but that it is the ,,truth of body1 the idea1 purpose1 in which only do the bodily conditions gain their real meaning4 ,to this great ,greek the chief of human virtues was ,,high-,,mindedness1 a crowning ,self-,respect4 ,this attitude of the self toward the house in which it lives recognizes the perfect interaction of self and body1 the one being influenced by the other1 and so it insists that no injury shall come to the body from the inner sex-life1 or from the sex-life to the inner self1 but that both shall be maintained in harmony with the absolute whiteness of ,eternal ,being4 ,you are invited1 then1 to maintain purity under the law of liberty1 and to adopt this thought as a permanent law3 ,,my ,,personal ,,dignity ,,stoops ,,not ,,to ,,physical ,,degradation4 #f4 ,,the ,,liberty ,,of ,,conscious ,,harmony ,,with ,,the ,,universal ,,forces ,,embraces ,,the ,,intelligent ,,use ,,of ,,the ,,science ,,of ,,medicine4 ,the science of medicine is fairly indicated for our present purpose in the following quotation--from ,dr4 ,oliver ,wendell ,holmes3 ,what is the honest truth about the medical art8 ,that by far the largest number of diseases which physicians are called upon to treat will get well at any rate1 even in spite of reasonably bad treatment4 ,that of the other fraction1 a certain number will certainly die1 whatever is done4 ,that there remains a small number of cases where the life of the patient depends on the skill of the physician4 ,that drugs now and then save life2 that they often shorten disease and remove symptoms2 but that they are second in importance to food1 air1 temperature1 and the other hygienic influences4 ,throw out opium2 throw out wine1 and the vapors which produce the miracle of anesthesia1 and ,i firmly believe that if the whole materia medica1 as now used1 could be sunk to the bottom of the sea1 it would be all the better for mankind4 ,it is a mistake to suppose that the normal state of health is represented by a straight horizontal line1 ,independently of the well-known causes which raise or depress the standard of vitality1 there seems to be--,i think ,i may venture to say there is--a rhythmic undulation in the flow of the vital force4 ,the 'dynamo' which furnishes the working powers of consciousness and action has its annual1 its monthly1 its diurnal waves1 even its temporary ripples1 in the current it furnishes4 ,there are greater and lesser curves in the movement of every day's life1--a series of ascending and descending movements1 a periodicity depending on the very nature of the force at work in the living organism4 ,there is also in our life a periodicity of the deeper self--a curve of the soul's condition1 which varies from time to time4 ,when the curve is downward in both the physical and the spiritual case1 drugs are of no more value than stones4 ,when the curve is upward in both cases1 drugs may be totally gratuitous1 and they may actually retard the combined movements4 ,when the health-curve is downward1 the psychic curve may follow suit1 but it need not necessarily do so4 ,when the psychic curve is downward1 the health- curve tends in the same direction4 ,when the health-curve is upward1 the psychic curve usually follows4 ,when the psychic curve is upward1 we have the best condition for the cure of disease4 ,but ,nature always does the curing4 ,the physician never cures any disease2 he merely assists ,nature4 ,it is the function of medical science to arrest downward curves by any tried methods1 to take advantage of upward curves1 and to know what the curves are in any given case4 ,i call my physician because ,i may want him when ,i cannot help myself in these important respects4 ,i will have in my hands the greatest number of the best forces when ,i am subject to abnormal conditions4 ,i believe that is common sense1 and ,i know it is perfectly permissible to the most exalted faith in the ,soul of our ,universe4 ,i am ready to concede that in a sublime state of ultimate evolution there is nothing which a drug or a doctor can do except surgery that may not better be accomplished by the power of harmonic ,,white-,,life ,,thought claiming health4 ,but in such a future state disease will long since have vanished4 ,nevertheless1 we do now certainly know a great law of mental power over the body4 ,i do not concede any limits1 except as above indicated1 to the operation of that law if we could get it fully under control4 ,its scope1 even as matters are1 is immense4 ,the law is real1 and it belongs to no particular age or body of people4 ,it is as long as time and as wide as earth4 ,any human being may claim the benefit in total disregard of any philosophy or form of religious belief1 provided the ,,white ,,life and the health-claim are with him1 under the sole limitations imposed by thousands of years of wrong thought-life in ancestry and similar error in personal past decreasing ability to affirm and realize in a way to secure the full benefits of the law4 ,it is for every human being1 nevertheless1 to strive for the inner harmony1 to invoke the law of spiritual mastery over the body1 and to put forth all possessed and obtainable power of thought and realization for health1 in good cheer1 with valiant heart1 and inspired by the truth that1 whatever betide1 nought can really harm the abiding self4 ,be not faithless2 but believing4 ,and so ,i think that our great ,nature-,universe bids us hear these words from the ,infinite ,white ,life3 ,sons and daughters of the ,all-,good1 the power of thought and harmony are surely for you4 ,if you realize your highest liberty and its greatest efficiency as you now are1 you will use1 not deny1 those instrumentalities which are provided in my ministers1 ,science and ,faith4 ,must you be a slave either to the material or to the immaterial8 ,can you not employ both for your welfare8 ,may not the king call in whomsoever he will8 ,all things are yours4 ,let us not fall into the old-time religious error of assuming that some particular philosophy or faith which we have discovered embraces all truth and value4 ,let us not label this or that with our little words1 and say3 ,this is law--this only4 ,the law of thought-power in the physical realm is older than any present civilization4 ,the law of harmony as the supreme health-restorer and health-builder is not a law created by the ,infinite during the last twenty-five years4 ,i uncover my heart to every soul who is trying for the best things and believes he has found a true way2 but ,i must not believe that this world has been left in stark ignorance of the most fundamental law of our earth-life--that health in its triune wholeness comes of the ,,white ,,life and the realizing claim--to await the birth and word of any man or woman in these times4 ,it is a little too late4 ,therefore ,i say to you who may read these pages3 ,stand free6 ,use every means and all methods1 material and spiritual 7for the material is but a phase of the spiritual71 for health and happiness4 #g4 ,,the ,,secret ,,of ,,thought ,,in ,,relation ,,to ,,health ,,is ,,the ,,claim ,,of ,,the ,,white ,,life ,,consciously ,,put ,,forth ,,for ,,physical ,,well-,,being4 ,in explanation of this principle1 let us try to obtain certain true conceptions concerning the material and pyschic nature of man4 ,all existences come to being through the activity of one ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality4 ,the medium in which all material existences exhibit is the universal ether of science1 vibrations in this medium constituting light1 heat1 electricity1 magnetism1 etc41 etc4 ,so far as we can think1 the ether is a manifest1 perhaps a primary manifest1 of ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality4 ,it is coming to be scientific to hold that matter reduces in its last analysis to electricity and is a complex form of vibrations of the ether within the ether4 ,matter is not merely pervaded by the ether2 it is a state of the ether4 ,matter1 then1 is a manifest of ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality4 ,life is a phase of the activity of matter4 ,if we think of matter in its grossest form1 nearest to us in the process of evolution1 life may be regarded as an entity different from that matter4 ,we do somehow feel that matter and life are distinct realities4 ,but if we think of matter as a complex form of etheric vibrations1 nothing forbids our saying that life also is a form of vibration of the ether within the ether4 ,with this view in mind1 we shall think of matter and life as comparatively simultaneous manifests of the ether1 life1 however1 appearing only when the state of etheric vibrations resulting in matter has reached a stage in which vibrations resulting in life can be possible4 ,we should then say that life is a product of etheric vibrations emerging through those that have resulted in matter2 that is1 life is a product of material activities4 ,this view cannot justly be called materialism because ,life is1 then1 also a manifest of ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality4 ,we do not scientifically know any sort of mind that is not exhibited through matter4 ,the human mind always exhibits through a human body4 ,what we call mind is a complex of states of consciousness engaged in various activities4 ,consciousness involves certain physical activities within us4 ,if nothing were acting within1 we should not be conscious4 ,this has always been true4 ,the first dawn of consciousness in ,nature involved activities within the organism4 ,if we think of that first faintly conscious existence as a mass of crude matter1 then the self and its body will appear to be distinctly separated in reality4 ,but if we think of that body as a manifest of etheric vibrations in which life-vibrations also obtained1 there is nothing to forbid our saying that consciousness was equally a product of such vibrations4 ,if so1 the psychic factor was a form of vibrations of the ether within the ether--and so1 when it appeared1 had evolved to higher forms1 was consciousness4 ,matter is an evolution1 and out of it hare evolved life1 the psychic factor1 consciousness4 ,but consciousness is1 then1 for the reasons above indicated1 a manifest of ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality4 ,consciousness is the condition of personality4 ,when the former first appeared1 it was a product4 ,thenceforth1 because personality was a psychic factor in consciousness1 it became a creator4 ,that is to say1 it was capable of enlargement and enrichment1 and so1 began to unfold its powers1 to enrich its own contents by appropriation1 and to organize itself in various ways depending upon its nature in each case and the influence of environment4 ,in seeking to realize itself1 as it must do in the nature of things1 and in adjusting to environment1 which was a second necessity of its being1 it began to direct the activities of matter comprising its own body1 to select matter from without needful for its kind of body1 and to build this material up into a kind of body best adapted to its existence1 and thus1 by its own character1 to determine the character of the organism which it inhabited4 ,all this work seems entirely independent until we remember that ether1 matter1 life1 the psychic factor1 are manifests of ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality4 ,but when we so remember1 we see that personality consisting of a conscious self and a body is similarly a manifest of that ,reality4 ,this conclusion will appear to identify man and ,deity unless we discriminate a little4 ,every object in ,nature is a manifest of ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality1 but the latter transcends the former simply because the object is such a manifest1 ,a thing which is a manifest or expression of something superior cannot be identified with the superior something4 ,i am not the words which ,i write1 although they manifest me and could not exist without me4 ,every object in ,nature is precisely what it is as a manifest of ,reality4 ,there is scant freedom in the natural world apart from man4 ,nothing in ,nature could be other than it is4 ,man1 on the other hand1 is a manifest of ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality in the sense that he has a body1 and must have one1 and is a personality and must be one 7if he is man72 but in the man psychic factor has come to consciousness1 and consciousness1 as we have seen1 always reveals itself in ,,self-,,direction ,,and ,,self-,,organization ,,according ,,to ,,its ,,developed ,,power ,,to ,,think ,,of ,,itself ,,as ,,self-,,conscious ,,existence4 ,were it unable to so think of itself1 it could not be self-directive in the fullest sense4 ,and were it unable to self- direct its own activities1 it could not be conscious in the fullest sense of the word4 ,our existence manifests ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality1 but the power to ,,use that existence is determined by the fact that we are psychic factors in the highest sense exhibited in the earth1 and the use we make thereof is determined by our exercise of the power of self-direction and self- organization4 ,we cannot help being human beings1 but what ,,kind of human beings we are1 within the limits of personal endowments1 depends solely upon ourselves4 ,we may see1 then1 that the psychic factor within us builds the bodies we live in1 so that our physical character is largely an expression of our personal character4 ,ages of wrong thought-life are behind us1 yet even so1 it is within our power to improve physical character very greatly indeed4 ,now1 the power of personal right thinking and harmony with the ,white ,life of ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality may be explained in the following way 7you will understand1 of course1 that the outline is designed merely to be suggestive73 ,,all ,,matter ,,in ,,the ,,realm ,,of ,,nature ,,being ,a ,,manifest ,,of ,,infinite ,,and ,,eternal ,,reality1 ,,nature ,,and ,,her ,,substances ,,are ,,phases ,,of ,,eternal ,,thought4 ,the study of ,nature is just the study of that ,thought1 conducted in various ways and for various purposes4 ,the ,thought1 in all its existences and relations1 is a vast and complex whole1 and yet1 from the point of view of its highest value to man1 a great ,word1 comparatively simple and open to every earnest and sincere seeker throughout all the ages4 ,if you will ask yourself1 ,what are the main and abiding thoughts which are embodied in ,nature8 your conclusion1 ,i think1 need not be elaborate and confusing4 ,the question1 however1 must be asked in a receptive and unprejudiced mood1 and not merely by the matter-of-fact intellect4 ,every inch of earth1 of water1 of fire1 and of air contains the fundamental principles of the universe1 and man is the connecting link between dust and ,deity1 and can bridge the gulf through the illumination of his mind4 ,the most powerful telescope known to man is mind's eye4 ,he who has cultivated and learned to open his heart to the touch of outward ,nature illuminates his inner being by the elevation and refinement of his emotional and imaginative nature4 ,this is the first principle in the objective world of the higher education of mind and soul4 ,the first lesson of ,mother ,earth is to instruct her children to be softened and sympathetic toward the moods of outward ,nature4 ,thus mankind softens1 broadens1 and grows1 becoming more susceptible to impressions1 taking in the glory of the ,divine ,architect1 which is in the world revealed1 and the golden gates of the soul are opened4 ,seeking with such a spirit1 then1 the main ,thoughts which ,nature embodies1 ,i venture to say that ,infinite and ,eternal ,reality has there expressed itself in these great ,words3 ,reality1 ,truth1 ,law1 ,beauty1 ,goodness1 ,harmony1 ,power1 ,development1 ,happiness1 ,love1 ,service1 ,,life4 ,these are the ,thoughts expressed in ,nature which are manifest of the ,white ,life4 ,for such the nature of things always declares1 when free to do so4 ,by so much as any object of existence fully realizes itself1 by so much are these ,thoughts1 so far as such realization requires1 made concrete if only we have the seeing mind and the feeling heart4 ,with these powers of perception1 the seeing mind and the feeling heart1 we come to know that all in ,nature is good and means good to every man and woman and child in this world4 ,there is no evil in ,nature4 ,all so-called evil in ,nature is due either to some phase of her existence wrongly used or to some false interpretation in human thinking4 ,nature is ,,real1 ,,true1 ,,law-,,full1 ,,beautiful1 ,,good1 ,,harmonious1 ,,full ,,of ,,power1 ,a ,,growing ,,organism1 ,a ,,minister ,,of ,,service ,,and ,,well-,,being1 ,a ,,living ,,thing1 ,a ,,literature ,,of ,,love4 ,if you refer to microbes1 poisons1 deadly serpents1 and the like1 ,i reply that the perfect ,,white ,,life in man1 together with the knowledge of science1 would teach him to avoid wrong relations and develop within him physical1 mental and moral tone 7tonus1 in the language of the schools74 ,thus would he be rendered immune from all so-called evils4 ,if your inner life contains nothing alien to these great ,nature- ,thoughts1 if you see to it that their character is given your personal character1 you will secure in the body a degree of the power of harmony which they possess1 and your health will infallibly correspond4 ,do no mistake this sentence4 ,will you kindly read it--again until you see what it really means8 ,the only limit to your health will be the limit of your ability to realize in yourself the mighty ,thoughts which make ,nature what she is4 ,i do not mean that splendid results must immediately issue from the course indicated4 ,patience and time are important factors4 ,i do not mean that a dying man can inevitably realize these ,thoughts sufficiently to recover health4 ,there are limits1 not to the law1 but to one's ability to use the law4 ,in spiritual effort1 effort of the inner self to lay hold upon the ,universal ,forces1 you can make your own personal discoveries4 ,i may not say a greater word4 ,above all1 ,i do not mean that merely thinking the ,thoughts will be enough1 in any case4 ,the method is one of realization as well as affirmation4 ,but by so much as you become that which the ,nature- ,thoughts suggest1 by so much will your physical and psychic health come to buoyancy1 joy and power4 ,you are now invited1 then1 to adopt the following as the permanent law of your thought-life3 ,i am1 in every function of my body and every activity of my deeper self1 entirely ,,genuine1 representing ,,truth1 obeying ,,law1 loving ,,beauty1 striving for ,,goodness1 coming to ,,harmony1 possessed of ,,power1 ,,growing to better things1 full of ,,happiness1 eager to ,,serve1 a ,,living white life1 and a ,lover of all that is good4 ,if you will thoughtfully and believingly repeat this law twice a day say1 for one hundred days1 you will find life unfolding new meanings1 fears fading and dying1 and courage growing to real greatness4 #h4 ,,in ,,the ,,mystery ,,of ,,the ,,silence ,,the ,,power ,,of ,,realization ,,becomes ,,greatest ,,and ,,most ,,effective ,,because ,,in ,,such ,a ,,state ,,the ,,self ,,makes ,,its ,,high ,,thoughts ,a ,,conscious ,,claim ,,on ,,all ,,good ,,things4 ,the direct utility of the right thought-life is nowhere doubted4 ,by this the psychic factor largely molds the body and influences its functions4 ,preceding methods or laws have all referred to the truth involved4 ,but the law of direct realization is needed in order to complete the workings of the truth4 ,by direct realization the self consciously claims the present benefit of the spirit or attitude of harmony4 ,you may think of yourself as splendidly well and fearless3 that is one thing-you ,,regard yourself as in such conditions4 ,and you may claim yourself ,,now to be well and courageous3 that is another thing--you ,,treat yourself for health and fearlessness4 ,when you think of your arm as moving1 it does not necessarily move2 you have merely entertained the idea4 ,when you will your arm to move1 you have claimed your power to move it and have realized the power--realized in actual thought that power4 ,the difference would obtain if your arm were bound3 you could still realize in thought the sense of movement4 ,realization of the ,eternal ,thoughts is a conscious claim in spirit and appropriation in spirit of the ,thoughts as actual within yourself4 ,realization of benefits for health is a conscious holding of them in mind as present in you4 ,one may in time acquire the fixed mood of realization1 but it will assist you to bring about that mood if you will occasionally1 say once a day1 shut out all disturbances and alien thoughts and feelings1 and try to come into communion with the ,white ,life--go into the silence and1 by quiet affirmation and sincere1 trustful realization1 claim the ,universal ,forces as your helpers in building up your physical tone and the spirit of courage4 ,a sentence like the following may be used3 ,conscious of psychic uprightness in the white life1 and of the beauty1 utility and wonder of my physical being in its nature1 and function1 ,i now claim1 and without doubt am receiving1 the ,universal ,forces for my best tone and courage-spirit in all- improving health4
