,frances ,r4 ,sterrett ,popular hotels and big cafs are much the same the world over1 whether you find them in ,new ,york1 ,paris1 ,cairo or ,calcutta4 ,there is the same staff of uniformed1 expectant servants1 the same glittering decorations and appointments1 the orchestra plays the same selections1 and the throng of well-dressed guests looks as though it might have been transported bodily from one to the other4 ,love of variety sends the traveler1 away from all this glare and glitter1 to some quaint resort that had its group of patrons when the ,united ,states was young1 and which still retains many of the customs that were features of the common life a century or more ago1 and that now are so unusual that they prove strong magnets for the tourist4 ,nearly everybody who goes to ,london finds his way1 sooner or later1 to ,ye ,olde ,cheshire ,cheese in ,wine ,office ,court4 ,tucked away1 as it is1 just off of ,fleet ,street1 it presents anything but a pretentious appearance and more than one party of timid ,american women has hurried away1 disappointed at sight of its dingy court4 ,but the dinginess is all on the outside2 within1 there is light and warmth1 and cheery greeting4 ,the ,cheese was a coffee house beloved by ,samuel ,johnson1 and the chair in which the great man sat1 night after night1 while busy ,boswell listened and took copious notes of the interchange of wits1 is still there1 standing now beneath the big portrait of ,dr4 ,johnson that hangs on one side of the fireplace4 ,oliver ,goldsmith was also a regular patron of the ,cheese1 which is one of the few meeting places of the literati of the eighteenth century that still remain4 ,indeed1 these old relics of the past are fast disappearing4 ,five years ago1 when ,i first visited the ,cheese1 the waiter1 impressed with my interest in the old associations1 asked if ,i would care to see the house in which ,johnson lived4 ,it was near at hand1 but he said emphatically1 ,you'll have to hurry for they are tearing it down at this minute4 ,hurry we did and arrived in time to see the dismantling of the last row of windows4 ,ye ,olde ,cheese is too good a source of revenue for it to be destroyed1 and the prospects are that for years to come ,americans will flock there to exclaim over the high paneled walls and the sanded floors4 ,the tables still stand between high-backed benches1 over which the newspapers are hung1 as they were in ,johnson's day4 ,the old grill is on the second floor1 and over its gleaming coals innumerable kidneys and chops have been brought to culinary perfection4 ,beefsteak pudding1 which is served on ,wednesdays1 with all the pomp and ceremony of ancient days1 is an attraction that fills the tables and sends away dozens of envious men and women1 who can get no more than a sniff of the ,old ,english dish1 as it is borne in triumph through the rooms4 ,other days have their specialities1 but it is the beefsteak pudding that is the favorite1 and if you delay your arrival1 the prospects are1 you will have to be satisfied with a kidney or a chop1 for not a scrap of pie is ever left4 ,but with toasted cheese to follow1 the kidney is not a bad substitute1 and it brings with it1 also1 a flavor of ,dickens and ,thackeray1 whose heroes dined frequently on such fare4 ,with the luncheon comes ,devonshire cider1 another speciality of the house1 if you do not care for beer or ale1 but beer or cider is served in reproductions of the pewter mugs that ,dr4 ,johnson drank from1 and1 for a consideration1 you can carry one away1 wrapped in an odd bag of woven reeds4 ,the visitors' book at the ,cheese makes interesting reading while you wait for your chop1 for it is embellished with pen drawings by the famous artists of the world1 and enriched with sentiments from poets1 novelists1 musicians1 politicians1 capitalists1 and others whose names are known on more than one continent4 ,illustration3 ,,ye ,,olde ,,cheshire ,,cheese1 ,a ,,coffee ,,house ,,beloved ,,by ,,samuel ,,johnson ,buszard's on ,oxford ,street is not as familiar to ,americans1 but it has an interest of its own1 for it has made wedding cakes for royalty for many years1 and the models displayed in the show-room form an amusing exhibition to the ,american who has little idea of what a royal wedding cake should be4 ,there they stand six or seven feet tall and in as many tiers1 each ornamented with almond icing1 inches thick1 and sugar piping1 with coats of arms and heraldic devices1 and bearing on top a sugar temple surmounted by doves and other hymeneal emblems4 ,the account of a fashionable wedding in the ,english society papers usually closes with the line1 ,cake by ,buszard or ,bolland1 for ,buszard in ,london and ,bolland in ,chester make most of the wedding cakes that are served in ,england1 and they send hundreds of them to the colonies1 so that the ,english bride1 even if she be far from home1 can have ,cake by ,buszard4 ,and most delectable cake it is1 too1 and if you wander into the heavily furnished1 rather gloomy tea-room at the tea hour1 you will find it well filled with city and country people and a sprinkling of foreigners who are partaking of the conventional afternoon refreshment where their grandparents or great grandparents1 perhaps1 were refreshed4 ,tea for two shillings allows you to eat all the cake you wish1 but unfortunately physical limitations prevent you from trying half of the delicious confections in the tray beside you1 the almond pound1 ,dundee1 ,maderia simnel1 rich currant1 muscatel1 green ginger1 cheese cakes and ,scotch short bread1 all made from ancient recipes4 ,it is difficult to choose a favorite1 although the ,scotch short bread never tastes quite the same as it does in one of the popular tea rooms on ,princes ,street in ,edinburgh4 ,newhaven1 just outside of ,edinburgh1 used to be more famous for its fish dinners than it is now and1 perhaps1 you will find no other party in the hotel coffee room where at least four kinds of fried fish1 no one of which you can find on this side of the water1 are served for a shilling1 sixpence4 ,newhaven is visited for its picturesque fishwives2 and the women look more as though they had just been brought from ,holland than as descendants of ,scandinavians who crossed in the time of ,james ,,iv4 ,they have been singularly conservative in their habits1 and1 owing to a strict custom of intermarriages1 there are only a few names to be found in this colony of fisher folk1 who have to resort to nicknames for identification4 ,illustration3 ,,from ,,the ,,coffee-,,room ,,window ,,you ,,can ,,see ,,the ,,quaint ,,newhaven ,,fishwives ,if you are a tourist of the feminine gender1 you will probably stop at the ,globe ,inn1 in ,dumfries1 for a lemon squash1 or a ginger ale1 although you may be brave enough to ask the rosy-cheeked landlady for a small glass of what ,robert ,burns used to order2 for the ,globe ,inn is the ,burns' ,howff1 and down its narrow court the poet slipped nightly to the brightly-lighted room where his companions waited4 ,the chair in which the poet lolled is still there1 and a right stout affair it is1 and with stout arms4 ,it is kept securely locked behind wooden doors1 and the landlady made a great ceremony of opening them and insisted on each of us trying the capacious seat4 ,perhaps you write poetry yourself8 she asked2 but we had to confess that we felt no more gifted with rhymes in ,burns' chair than in our own inglenook in ,america1 and followed her up the stairs to the old-time room filled with relics4 ,americans come a long way to see these old pieces1 she said1 as she motioned majestically to a punch bowl1 and then moved to the window on whose pane the poet had written the verses to ,the ,lovely ,polly ,stewart4 ,you seem to think a sight of ,burns8 ,there was one ,american gentleman who offered me a pot of money1 if ,i would let him take the ,howff to a fair in ,america1 but ,i make a tidy living out of it here and ,god knows if we would ever live to cross the ocean4 ,burns lived and died here1 and what would do for him will do for me1 humbly4 ,there are many colleges in ,oxford1 but at no one of them is the tourist supposed to find refreshment in the dining halls1 so that it was something of a triumph to be given a tart in one of the quaint old kitchens4 ,the tart was really a tribute to an interest in the pantry shelves which were filled with pastry1 and in the explanatory list that hung beside them4 ,tarts have been made in the same fashion at this ,oxford college for several hundred years1 in order1 the cook explained1 with a twinkle in his eye1 that the students might get what they wanted1 when they slipped down on a night tart raid4 ,it is the nick in the edge that has told generations of students the contents of the tart2 an apple has only one nick1 a mince has two at each end1 a gooseberry three1 and so on until a student who has learned the rule can choose his favorite in the dark4 ,winchester1 the old royal city of ,england1 has so many places of interest1 the cathedral1 the famous ,winchester school1 the castle1 in which hangs ,king ,arthur's round table as it has hung for several hundred years1 that the traveler who is there but for a day may not have time to share the wayfarer's dole at ,st4 ,cross hospital which is distributed today just as ,bishop ,henry de ,blois1 a grandson of ,william the ,conqueror1 arranged almost eight hundred years ago4 ,this wayfarer's dole consists of a horn of ale and piece of white bread1 and anyone who knocks at the hatchway of the porter's gate is entitled to receive it4 ,about thirty wayfarers are given it daily as well as many notable people and curious travelers who knock at the door for the novelty of sharing in a picturesque survival of a medival charity4 ,ralph ,waldo ,emerson wrote of his experience1 ,just before entering ,winchester we stopped at the ,church of ,st4 ,cross1 and after looking through the quaint antiquity we demanded a piece of bread and a draught of ale1 which the founder1 ,henry de ,blois1 in #aacf1 commanded should be given to everyone who should ask it at the gate4 ,we had both from the old couple who take care of the church4 ,when you are in ,paris you must not forget ,rumpelmeyer1 the king of pastry makers4 ,his shop is unpretentious1 considering his vogue1 and the room is all too small on a pleasant afternoon for the throng which would invade it4 ,there are representatives from the far corners of the world4 ,americans are all about you2 at the next table is a ,russian grand duchess1 perhaps1 with her cavaliers2 nearer the wall sits a woman from the ,orient1 whose soft silk draperies are in strange contrast to the modish ,parisiennes2 a group of children chatter of ,south ,africa to their attendants and two natives from ,india have not doffed their spotless white turbans4 ,illustration3 ,,sharing ,,in ,a ,,picturesque ,,survival ,,of ,a ,,medi,,val ,,charity ,rumpelmeyer's might be considered a glorified cafeteria1 and the great moment of your visit to the caf is when you have taken the fork and plate from the smiling maid1 and stand hesitating beside the table laden with cakes4 ,and such cakes6 ,fluffy balls rolled in chocolate and cocoanut1 maple crescents1 diamonds of paste enriched with ,french fruits1 tiny tarts filled with glacd cherries1 half an apricot or a plum2 cornets heaped with cream of pistachio or strawberries1 pastry and sweetmeats in every appetizing form1 until it is difficult to make a choice4 ,at last with plate laden you find your way to the table where something new in ices1 cool or hot drinks1 is served4 ,and as you go away1 you cast a lingering glance at the patisserie table and plan to come1 again and again1 until you have tried every kind1 not knowing that new confections are offered every few days to make such a plan almost an impossibility4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,hospitable ,,people ,,of ,,volendam ,in strange contrast to the smart ,parisian caf is the ,hotel ,spaander in quaint ,volendam1 and if it is not the season you may be alone on the piazza which is swept by the bracing winds from the ,zuyder ,zee1 and where the picturesque hospitable people give you a cordial greeting4 ,and palatable as were the marvelous cakes of ,paris1 they were no better than the ,dutch raisin bread1 ,edam cheese and mild beer that forms your luncheon4 ,volendam is but next door to ,edam1 the home of the popular cheeses1 and the thin shavings seem to have been made to accompany the delicious raisin bread of ,holland4 ,the ,spaander is a popular rendezvous for artists1 and the big rooms have been adorned with paintings and sketches by the men and women who have enjoyed its hospitality4 ,the bright-faced girl1 who serves you1 was taught to speak ,english1 perhaps1 by some artist who may be a member of the ,british ,royal ,academy now1 and she loves to tell you of the notable people who have come and gone1 and she fairly carries you away to see the homes of the fisher folk4 ,she explains their marvelous clothes1 and declares that the huge silver buttons worn by the men and boys were used as a mark of identification in case of drowning1 for each district in ,holland has its own design4 ,she calls your attention to the old china1 pewter and brass1 and giggles approval when you pass the school and slip a copper into each of the wooden shoes at the door4 ,everybody takes at least one ice at ,florian's on ,st4 ,mark's ,square in ,venice for at ,florian's you are sure to see the world and his wife1 especially1 if you are there on an evening when the band plays in the square4 ,florian's ices are world renowned1 and its patrons are as cosmopolitan as ,rumpelmeyer's1 and1 as you eat your way through the pink or chocolate cone of sweetness1 you will find the price of it in the bottom of the dish4 ,there is no room for argument over the charge1 for in the bottom of every dish1 in plain figures1 is its cost1 two francs or two francs1 fifty4 ,and after you have paid the reckoning1 the waiter turns over the dish as a sign that your debt is canceled1 and you are at liberty to sit and listen to the music and watch the people for as long as you wish4 ,nearly every ,european city has a caf or a restaurant that is of special interest1 not because of its smart patronage or high prices1 but for its quaint customs1 old dishes or drinks1 and it varies the routine of galleries and historic buildings to hunt them out4 ,they add a spice1 a zest1 to what might become rather a dreary round of sight seeing1 for no one appreciates the old customs more than the ,american4 ,there are some travelers who make a point of stopping at the ,three ,tuns in ,durham1 no more to see ,durham's beautiful cathedral1 if the truth were told1 than to have the trim maid bring them a tiny glass of cherry brandy to drink to the health of the house1 a custom that was young two hundred years or more ago1 although it must be confessed that1 while the custom has been retained1 the glasses that hold the delicious cordial are considerably smaller than they were in the days when the request was first made4 ,being ,married ,by ,mrs4 ,chas4 ,norman ,the morning paper tells of a man and woman who got married after only a few hours' acquaintance4 ,unfortunately1 this couple cannot claim to have done anything unique4 ,numerous persons have done likewise--at least the newspapers say so--though the statement is one which makes upon a sane mind an impression of confusion4 ,i say confusion1 not to mention other effects4 ,after reading the announcement1 ,i looked into the dictionary to see if it could be true1 and ,i judge it is possible4 ,marriage1 according to ,webster1 is the act which unites the man and woman1 and1 while it seems impossible for a real union to take place in so brief a time1 still there is probably no other way of telling in the ,english language what has occurred4 ,it might well happen that the persons so hastily joined should become married in the course of time4 ,certain metals really mix and stick together even after the heat of welding has died out1 but no mere ceremony can unite1 though it be performed by the holiest of ministers or the most profound legal interpreter4 ,and1 as it is impossible for any third person to unite man and woman1 so it is out of the question for any third person to give any legitimate advice as to whether or not the man and woman should unite1 unless by chance the third person discovers that the real union or disunion already exists4 ,an ambitious young lady stopped to see me on her way to ,new ,york4 ,she was about to sail for ,europe1 and she told me1 confidentially1 that she was engaged to marry a clergyman of this country1 and that she might marry him1 if she failed to get a certain position she hoped for in ,paris4 ,i could not refrain from saying1 ,do not marry1 and she took it that ,i was either averse to matrimony or to the young man4 ,such supposition was incorrect4 ,i simply disliked to see any man irrevokably tied to a woman who took him only because she could not get something else4 ,i explained this to the girl1 but it did no good4 ,she said ,i was sentimental and not at all practical4 ,i confessed to a little sentiment on the subject of wedlock1 and refrained from adding that ,i should rather be truthful than practical1 but ,i told her that1 if she had accepted her lover1 conditionally1 her course was entirely honorable1 and then1 to relieve the heaviness of the conversation1 ,i repeated these lines1 which she laughed at very moderately indeed3 ,i1 ,pegg ,pudding1 promise thee1 ,william ,crickett1 ,that ,i will hold thee for mine own dear lily1 ,whilst ,i have a head in mine eye and a face on my nose1 ,a mouth in my tongue and all that a woman should have1 ,from the crown of my foot to the sole of my head4 ,the attention of my guest flagged a little and1 when ,i completed the stanza1 she confessed she was thinking of a ,philadelphia girl whose resolution she much admired4 ,during a sojourn in ,europe1 this girl had refused sixty-five offers of marriage--,i hope ,i have the number exactly right--having determined to marry no one of lower rank than a prince4 ,i sped my guest to ,new ,york and ,europe1 and after her departure no ghost needed to come from the grave to tell me why marriage is so often a failure4 ,we hear this thing and that thing given as a reason4 ,responsibility enough is to be laid at the door of men1 but let women confess a share in the desecration of the sacred ordinance4 ,is it possible to think of a marriage resulting well that does not begin in truth1 and continue in truth8 ,let truth1 at least1 be counted an essential4 ,after truth1 let the candidate consider the necessity of sacrifice4 ,present-day girls cannot claim much more of that element than boys4 ,if modern women have a hobby more general than another1 it must be the development of their individuality4 ,this is a fine thing1 but let those who are over-zealous on this point remain single or remain rational1 for it is scarcely fair to develop one's individuality to the extinction of another person's rights4 ,to speak the truth1 a proper individuality is never oblivious to others4 ,women would be learned and wise1 but they fail to see that the very richest return of wisdom comes from putting forth their full strength where it is due4 ,god has provided that recompense for all dutiful activity1 and it often happens that the circumstances that would seem to retard mental development are its greatest stimuli1 and the saving of the much-cherished individuality is accomplished by self-forgetfulness4 ,marriage is one of the apparent interruptions to intellectual progress--especially a woman's4 ,we often hear of the fine career a certain person might have had1 unmarried4 ,such talk signifies nothing4 ,in the first place1 age does not always fulfill the promises of youth4 ,many a young man has started well in life and failed through no fault of his companion4 ,a discerning man will not be apt to choose a frivolous woman1 though we often hear the contrary4 ,a bright girl1 though she may remain single and devote herself to herself1 is not sure of a successful career4 ,some womanly virtues are certainly fostered best in a home4 ,love is1 to many women1 what the tropics are to vegetation4 ,on the other hand1 there are women who seem to be created for public benefactions and isolated labors4 ,concentration in any line of business is bound to bring definite results1 but definite1 tangible results may not be the best results4 ,a man who assumes some domestic responsibility must abridge his public services1 and1 as it is only public services that make a show1 his life seems less valuable4 ,i like you better since you married1 said a frank old lady to a young man1 and he laughed and answered3 ,i used to know a great many things1 but they were all wrong1 every one of them6 ,it takes a sensible wife to straighten out a man's mental distortions4 ,doubtless his wife could have reversed the compliment4 ,the pictures of unhappy marriages are hung in every household which the ,american press can possibly reach3 the good marriages attract no attention4 ,natural reverence prevents those who know anything about them from telling what they know4 ,we do not talk glibly of ,god's love4 ,the theme is sacred4 ,just as sacred1 and very personal1 is the other subject4 ,no man of sense1 who loves his wife1 says much about it1 even to his intimate friends4 ,what adult1 with reason1 goes about seeking advice upon matrimony8 ,marriage is for persons of mature minds1 and it is absolutely an individual matter1 each case deciding itself4 ,let those who doubt concerning matrimony stay out of it4 ,let those who are already in it1 remember that it is a solemn compact between two persons and that any action is unbecoming and inconsistent which does not result to the advantage of both4 ,the ,regeneration of ,podunk ,by ,phoebe ,d4 ,roulon ,jack and ,i arrived at ,podunk just in strawberry time4 ,did you ever stop to consider what a mandatory phrase strawberry time is8 ,jack and ,i did to the fullest1 for from one end of ,podunk highway to the other1 in every farmstead that was the happy possessor of a strawberry patch1 the proclamation had gone forth that berries were ripe and must be done up at once4 ,there is no such thing as procrastinating with ,nature1 especially in her fruit department4 ,infinite in patience1 unsparing in pains from the first inception of the berry to its maturity1 when once her creative work is accomplished1 she lays the finished product at your feet and henceforth waives all responsibility4 ,put off until tomorrow what should have been done up today and ,nature will seek vengeance upon you and show you your folly4 ,mrs4 ,simpkins might better save her breath than to enter the protest that she cannot possibly can today1 for the minister and family are coming to dinner4 ,nature makes no exception for even the clergy4 ,when ,mrs4 ,hopewell declares she must take her butter and eggs to market today and so cannot do another stroke of work after one o'clock1 ,nature simply smiles complacently from the four corners of every ruddy berry basket and says1 ,take me now in my perfection1 for tomorrow it will have passed away4 ,in obedience to this inexorable law ,podunk was making ready4 ,brass kettles were being scoured and granite ones were coming forth from their winter hiding places4 ,with one accord ,podunk was becoming a huge canning and preserving factory1 with as many annexes as there were houses with berry patches4 ,day after day the process went on1 for day after day a fresh supply demanded attention4 ,overworked and tired housewives groaned in spirit and slept in meeting as a result4 ,everybody's nerves were a little on the bias until the strawberries were settled for the winter4 ,to a casual observer it seemed as if ,nature's lavishness had outrun ,podunk's gratitude1 and as if strawberries were becoming a nuisance4 ,as ,i said1 ,jack and ,i arrived just at this crisis in the farm life of ,podunk4 ,indeed1 within an hour after we landed1 and amid the chaos of unpacking1 a gentle maiden tapped at our kitchen door and importuned us to buy some preserving berries4 ,jack has a sweet tooth and ,i saw at a glance that he had not missed the vision of rows of red jars on the swinging shelf in the cellar1 and ,sunday night teas of jam1 long after the last strawberry had ripened and decayed4 ,but he desisted and let her depart without buying a berry4 ,this ,i call heroic and manly1 and told him so on the spot4 ,of course the well had not been pumped out1 the water-pail had not been unpacked1 the grocery supplies had not arrived4 ,there had not been a fire in the stove for eight months1 and there was no split wood in the wood shed1 but men have been known to expect household routine to go on under conditions quite as hindering1 therefore ,i repeat1 that ,jack1 in the face of vanishing sweets1 showed fortitude and consideration4 ,but it was plain that strawberry time had made an impression on his mind that took somewhat the form of a problem4 ,now ,jack is never happier than when he has nuts to crack or problems to solve4 ,he is that all-round type of man that can and does bring the same philosophic trend of mind to bear upon matters domestic as upon civic and national affairs4 ,we had come to ,podunk to rest1 but ,jack always rests in motion1 and in less than a week after our arrival ,i saw him go forth to canvass the community4 ,for days and days he was as glum as an oyster1 leaving me to guess what he was up to1 but ,i have so long known the limitations to his capacity for holding in and carrying a secret1 that ,i could wait in patience for the unbosoming4 ,it came on one of those chilly1 rainy nights in ,june1--the sort of night that ,jack always expects and gets warm gingerbread for supper4 ,gingerbread always puts him in a talkative mood4 ,we had each taken a second cup of tea1 when ,jack looked up and said1 ,do you realize1 my dear1 that this canning and jellying process is only just started for the season in ,podunk8 ,i find that our ,fourth of ,july not only proclaims ,american independence but also the proper time for making currant jelly1 and so1 unless ,nature plays us false1 the same ordeal must be repeated1 with only the difference that 'currant' will be written on the label instead of 'strawberry4' ,and still another repetition1 when raspberries are ripe and blackberries grow sweet and luscious4 ,again when the huckleberry bushes give up their treasures1 shadowing forth a winter supply for pies4 ,then come the peaches1 pears and plums1 followed by apples1 grapes and quinces4 ,between times1 lest the hand forgets its cunning1 there are peas1 corn1 beets and tomatoes to be rescued for future use4 ,and the season ends with a pickling tournament4 ,it hardly seems creditable1 but from here to ,podunk ,hollow1 a distance of less than two miles1 and only sparsely settled1 ,i find by actual count that there are thousands of cans of fruit and hundreds of glasses of jelly prepared every season4 ,from 'strawberry time'--indeed some ambitious housekeepers start in with rhubarb in ,april--until the last luckless green tomato is snatched from ,jack ,frost1 there is a mad rush on the part of the farmer's wife to keep apace with ,nature and to take care of her bounties with a thrifty hand4 ,by this time ,jack was ready for a second helping of gingerbread and proceeded4 ,don't you see1 my dear1 that this is an awful waste of muscular energy and stove fuel4 ,don't you see that consolidation and coperation at just this point would emancipate these women quite as much as the telephone and the rural delivery8 ,furthermore1 ,i believe there is fruit enough that goes to waste every year1 which1 if rescued1 would not only pay for the running of a community kitchen1 but also give a handsome bonus for civic beautifying4 ,it is my firm faith that ,podunk can earn the foundations of a fine library1 within the next three years1 by simply saving the waste of fruit and vegetables within her own borders4 ,she has a market already established at the summer colony of ,bide-a-wee4 ,the third piece of gingerbread gave ,jack the courage to make a clean breast of everything1 and to confess that he had called a meeting and made all the necessary arrangements to start a community kitchen for canning and preserving1 to be ready this season for the currant crop4 ,jack always persists that my impulsive opposition is his most helpful ally1 so ,i never feel hindered in giving it4 ,but ,i said ,you have surely never looked at this problem from the psychological standpoint4 ,you have never calculated the personal pride of every housewife in her own handiwork1 done in her own way1 the way tradition has made sacred to her4 ,eliminate the personal touch from half the preserve closets of ,podunk and you rob them of their glory and half of their flavor4 ,there are some things that cannot be consolidated and coperated and this is one of them4 ,why6 ,mrs4 ,patterson would be inconsolably wretched1 if she thought a jar of peaches would ever stand in her cellar that did not adhere to the formula of one and three-quarters pints of sugar to three pints of water4 ,now ,mrs4 ,smith is equally loyal to one and one-half parts sugar to three parts water4 ,and as for jelly making1 it has a hedge about it as conservative and invulnerable as a ,chinese wall4 ,instance1 our beloved ,mrs4 ,thornton4 ,that splendid spirit of housewifely excellence that we have always admired in her would be wholly inundated and wrecked1 if she ever had to set before us1 on her own tea-table1 a glass of jelly that had been made by heating the currants before they were crushed1 and straining the juice through cheesecloth instead of flannel4 ,to ,mrs4 ,thornton there is but one right way1 the cold and flannel process4 ,even ,i1 ,jack1 dear1 must own up to feeling an unpleasant sensation down my spinal column1 and a vexatious agitation in my mind1 whenever ,i see jelly boil more than five minutes after the sugar is added4 ,nay1 my ,worthy ,wisdom1 let me entreat you to carefully consider ere you intrude upon the sacred precincts of jelly-making with any ruthless tread4 ,as for pickling1 it is an established fact that every housewife pickles to suit the taste of her family and her rule lies in the palate of said family4 ,you know that the ,joneses are always strong on the onion flavor1 while the ,millers emphasize cinnamon and allspice6 ,fancy consolidating these flavors into a blend and expect either family to be contented and happy4 ,worthy as your ,community ,kitchen idea is in its inception1 ,i fear it is doomed to failure4 ,it uproots too many of the 'eternals' of housekeeping4 ,jack received my volley of opposing arguments1 not only with fortitude but with apparent satisfaction1 and simply said1 ,have you finished8 ,as ,i had1 he again took the floor4 ,now1 ,i am sure that my foundation is secure and my psychological attitude all right1 for all the objections you mention were brought up1 in one form or another1 at the meeting we held1 and ,i was able to meet every one of them4 ,no1 my dear1 ,i do not mean to uproot the 'eternals' and the ,joneses shall stand for onion flavor to the end of time4 ,the personal equation will always be considered4 ,each farmer will simply send his consignment of berries or fruit with explicit instructions as to recipes to be followed1 just as our great-grandfathers sent their grist to the mill to be ground and ordered middlings left in or middlings left out1 according as to whether it was for pancakes or bread4 ,those worthies took it on faith that they brought back the same grain they carried and there need be no question now4 ,farmer ,dunn's marrowfats need never get mixed with ,deacon ,white's telephone peas1 and ,mrs4 ,thornton can always send her flannel jelly bag4 ,it is my opinion that the good wives will have gained enough leisure time to come to the ,kitchen and inspect the process while their batch of fruit is being handled4 ,so closely are faith and works related in ,jack's philosophy of life that in an incredibly short time ,podunk awoke one morning to find the abandoned ,haskell house turned into a ,community ,kitchen1 in charge of a ,new ,england man and his wife1 of thrift and learning4 ,they began on the currant crop4 ,of course1 since ,jack was behind the innovation1 ,i had to show my faith by sending the first lot1 with instructions that the jelly should be boiled only one minute after the sugar was added4 ,the twenty glasses of tender crystalline jelly that stood on my pantry shelf the next day needed no argument and so encouraged my nearest neighbor that she sent half of her picking to the ,kitchen4 ,i saw that it caused a wrench1 but she supported herself on the consciousness that she was only risking half4 ,but the jelly that came back adhered so closely in color1 taste and texture to the traditional that the other half was sent without a qualm4 ,this made a beginning and by the time the raspberries were ripe a dozen families were converted4 ,when the fall fruits came on1 it had grown into such a fashion to send the preserving out that the capacity of the ,kitchen was somewhat taxed4 ,an evaporating outfit was added1 that saved hundreds of bushels of apples from absolute waste4 ,a simple device for making unfermented grape juice brought profit enough the first year to paint the town hall1 build over the stage and buy a curtain that never failed to work4 ,the second year a ,sunshine ,laundry was added to the ,kitchen1 which proved a great boon4 ,podunk had wrestled with the domestic problem1 but like the rest of the world had not solved it1 and was left to do its own washing4 ,as the name suggests1 the ,community ,kitchen was established on a coperative basis1 with the understanding that after all running expenses were paid and each contributor had a certain share of profit1 proportioned to the amount of surplus material he contributed1 all the remaining profit was to go for the improvement of the town4 ,the ,kitchen is now three years old and every visitor coming to ,podunk naturally wanders into the pretty new library on ,main ,street4 ,the sweet-faced librarian is always cordial and tells you with unmasked pride that this is the first library built of fruit and vegetables4 ,but complete regeneration came not to ,podunk1 until the ,culture ,club became an active organization1 impelled forward by the brain force of the women of the community4 ,given a margin of leisure1 it was demonstrated that culture will flourish as persistently in rural districts as in city precincts4 ,shakespeare and ,browning were not neglected1 nor were ,wagner and ,mendelssohn4 ,nature study1 ,domestic ,economy and ,civic beautifying opened new and broad avenues of culture1 and classes in these subjects were held every week4 ,the women of ,podunk began to know their birds and to call them by name4 ,the church suppers took on a new aspect1 for the dietetic unrighteousness of four kinds of cake and three kinds of sweet pudding1 at the same meal1 was openly discussed and frowned upon4 ,deacon ,wyburn1 who had a tooth sweeter even than ,jack's1 declared1 at first1 that this was heresy that should not be allowed to enter the sanctuary4 ,but regeneration came to the deacon as indigestion departed4 ,and all of this happened1 because ,jack saw the need of an emancipation proclamation and the people of ,podunk availed themselves of its freedom4 ,i have always said that ,jack was a man among men4 ,fate ,great men live in word and deed1 ,tho' the hand that sows the seed ,no harvest knows4 ,fixed as is the rolling sea ,by its bounds1 so this shall be ,to thee and those2 ,something lost and something won ,e'er the life that hath begun ,for thee shall close4 --,grace ,agnes ,thompson ,out of ,chicken ,pie ,by ,helen ,campbell ,the point is1 said the young woman1 never to spend any time in self-pity and never mention one of whatever afflictions may have been apportioned to your individual self4 ,the first takes your strength and spoils any good work you might do4 ,the second is a bore to your friends and destruction to self-respect4 ,in the first grip of things it is possible one may send up a howl4 ,but at that or any other time1 no matter what the impulse1 ,don't6 ,was she a young woman after all8 ,for1 as she brought out the ,don't6 staccato1 ,i looked again4 ,really she seemed more like a nice boy1 well up in athletics1 and as far on in general college work as athletics permit4 ,her hair was short1 cut close to her head1 yet curly1 and though rather a dark brown1 yet showing gold where little tendrils had their way1 here and there1 behind an ear or on her slender neck4 ,her hands were small1 of course1 for she was a ,southern woman1 generations of whom had no need to use their hands in any coarsening work1 yet could and did use them in delicate cookery1 preserving1 and the like1 and knew every secret of cutting and generally overseeing the garments for a plantation4 ,delicately formed1 straight as a dart and with the alert expression of a champion tennis player1 she stood at the gate into the chicken-yard1 and smiled a delightful smile4 ,i shouldn't tell you one word1 she said1 if you hadn't come from so old a friend4 ,oh1 privately ,i would tell anyone interested1 but printing is another matter4 ,it will help1 you say4 ,i'm sure ,i don't know4 ,perhaps1 but ,i somehow seem to think most find out for themselves1 perhaps by a good many experiments1 just what to do4 ,but ,i will tell you just how it began with me4 ,nellie has told you1 ,i don't doubt1 that ,i was left a widow with three children4 ,we had lived in town1 after my marriage1 in a rented house4 ,when my husband died and ,i presently summed up my capital1 it was1 first1 the children1 then1 not quite two hundred dollars left in the bank after the expenses of the long sickness and the funeral were paid4 ,added to this were nine hens and a rooster that ,i had kept at the end of the little garden at the back of the house1 our cat and dog and about a fortnight's supplies in the pantry4 ,our clothes1 too1 were in fair amount and order4 ,that was all4 ,lots of people came to condole with me and tell me what to do1 but not one made what seemed to me a really practical suggestion4 ,i knew what ,i could do1 or thought ,i did1 which amounts to the same thing1 if you really go ahead and do it4 ,i did it4 ,the first thing was to move into the country1 where ,i had longed to have the children4 ,it isn't country now exactly1 for the station is not far away1 but the house was out of repair1 and ,i had the option of buying it at the end of the year1 if ,i wanted it then4 ,the owner couldn't do much and was glad to think it might be off his hands1 and ,i took it for eighty dollars a year--this to include a few repairs4 ,there was a big garden1 not tended for years1 not a fruit tree1 and the four acres outside the fenced-in garden one mass of brush4 ,my next neighbor was a farmer from the ,north1 come ,south for his health and getting it1 and he took an interest from the beginning2 he ploughed my land for me1 and agreed to go over it with the cultivator when it was necessary1 but ,i must first manage to rake up and burn up all the weeds and sticks1 etc4 ,the children helped me and we made a spree of it4 ,i bought a cow of him1 a good one1 and1 as one of my hens had begun to set on a box of nails1 decided she should have eggs4 ,he had some fine1 pure-blooded ,plymouth ,rocks1 and mine were ,wyandottes1 just as good and no fear as to crossing breeds1 and so ,i started in4 ,what ,i was after was broilers1 and if broilers wouldn't support us1 why there was something else that ,i felt sure would1 and that was chicken pies4 ,you smile1 but let me tell you they weren't everyday chicken pies4 ,our old ,dilly on my father's plantation was a champion chicken-pie maker1 in demand for every wedding and general church entertainment1 and she taught me just how1 swearing me to secrecy long as she lived4 ,so ,i watched her many times1 realizing1 at last1 that it meant using the very choicest material straight through4 ,no old hens simmered all day long to make them tender4 ,on the contrary1 she demanded the choicest broilers1 and she made1 not exactly puff paste but the most delicate order of pastry to put them in4 ,to season to a turn and with no variation1 and to have the gravy smooth and rich1 these were her secrets1 and ,i learned them so thoroughly that after once sampling them there was no further trouble as to orders4 ,i sent little individual pies to every hotel and restaurant in the city ,i had left4 ,i had bought a good cow1 as ,i said1 and soon bought another1 to have plenty of cream1 for that was one important item in the pies1 and as the work got too much for me alone ,i presently had a girl to help1 and at last another1 all of us doing steady hard work1 but liking it4 ,i raised the chickens1 you see1 though ,i often hated to have them killed1 and by this time we had small fruits1 and all that grows in a well-kept garden4 ,the children helped as well as went to school and were rosy1 healthy creatures1 my comfort and joy1 and they always have been4 ,i never have cleared over five hundred a year1 but what more do ,i need8 ,i make ten cents clear on each individual chicken pie and fifteen on the larger ones4 ,specials ,i make as large as people want them1 but ,i prefer the little ones4 ,three sizes are made every day1 and some families1 who go away for the summer1 have their chicken pies expressed to them each week and won't do without them4 ,some people fuss and say they are too rich4 ,others want me to charge less and say1 if ,i would use lard instead of butter in the pastry1 ,i could sell cheaper4 ,but ,i answer that it is my business never to fall below the standard4 ,aunt ,dilly would turn in her grave if she thought her rule was to have lard used instead of butter4 ,i made some experiments and found it was distinctly best to stick close to the old original text4 ,you can buy cheap pies anywhere and they taste cheap4 ,these melt in your mouth4 ,and you ought to know that two other women in the neighborhood have specialties1 too1 and ,i taught them1 for my mother used to make a delicious chicken jelly for sick people and one woman does that and has a big market for it at the ,woman's ,exchange1 and another makes cornbeef hash for three restaurants and has all she can do4 ,the gist of it is good cooking can always be made to pay4 ,keep to the best form you can find1 never vary1 and a living1 and often much more1 is certain4 ,when women learn that1 perhaps more of them will turn in this direction4 ,here is the home paid for1 trees growing and yielding1 children growing too1 and ,tom almost ready for college1 and chicken pie has done it1 and will keep on doing it1 perhaps as long as ,i live4 ,at any rate ,i should never stop doing something as perfectly as ,i could for that is half the fun of living4 ,don't you think so8 ,we keep the evenings for as much of a good time as possible4 ,i keep a little of my old music and play accompaniments1 for ,tom has a fine baritone voice and we all sing1 and ,edith and her violin take the kinks out of any day's work4 ,we have a fair little library and do not mean to fall behind or forget what quiet progress means4 ,it has been a happy life1 thank ,god6 ,how could it help being so1 with such children and a certain sure thing to do8 ,yes1 how could it help being thus with such a spirit at work to bring it about8 ,that was the thought as ,i looked at the mother1 and wished that all dolorous and uncertain women might have the same chance4 ,joining the ,sunshine ,circle or the ,harmony ,club might be the first essential4 ,after that things would take care of themselves4 ,in problem when living in it than when viewed afar off4 ,it is a question of economics and ethics more than of wrinkles4 ,it is so easy not to mind it when well1 rich and beloved2 it is so impossible not to object to it when sick1 poor and unwelcome4 ,it creeps into almost every home and1 though we try to alleviate it and succeed to a certain extent1 through affection1 cookery and cleanliness1 the vast majority of the world does not know how to manage to live on almost nothing1 and yet it is upon those of small or of no means that the support of old age presses most heavily4 ,so love only is left1 and too often not even that4 ,then one wonders if one ought to refuse marriage and devote one's self to one's parents2--or1 if married and children are many1 and food and lodgings scant1 shall one also house one's aged parents8 ,if the ethics thereof are difficult to settle when money and space are available1 it is a hideous task for decision when both are lacking4 ,nowhere does the attempted settlement to remove the stigma of pauperism from the aged through legislation threaten to be more puzzling than in ,england1 where after ,january #a1 #aiaa1 a workhouse inmate of above seventy years and fairly respectable is entitled to leave the house and receive in lieu of its shelter five shillings a week4 ,is acceptance of such pension outside of a workhouse more honorable than being dependent on ,government for support inside the workhouse8 ,that is the question the ,old ,age pensioners of ,england are trying to solve4 ,who is going to house1 feed and clothe them for five shillings a week8 ,what does that amount to1 set against the care of an infirm1 old1 undesired relative who is not wanted either for his keep or his affection1 and who will only grow older8 ,even as a boarder of no kin whatever to his landlady1 is he likely to be as comfortable as in the workhouse8 ,startling have been some of the discoveries that have followed upon this apparently beneficent legislation4 ,well was it that ,miss ,edith ,sellers of ,england1 of her own free will1 visited relatives of the inmates of a ,london workhouse1 hoping to carry back to the latter place the joyful tidings that they were wanted in families4 ,alas6 out of #ebh such inmates only #bba had any relatives1 and more than half of that number knew that1 if they went to their kinspeople1 they would not be taken in4 ,some who had felt sure of a welcome were bitterly disappointed4 ,old folk give no end of trouble2 keeping them clean takes up all one's time4 ,besides they must have somewhere to sleep1 was generally answered4 ,one grown-up daughter1 supporting herself1 her mother and brother in two rooms1 one no better than a cupboard1 grieved she could not take back her father4 ,other sons and daughters1 by blood or by law1 waxed indignant at being urged to receive their kinsmen1 even for the sake of the shillings4 ,they had neither room nor food for them2 each generation must care first for its own children and not take up burdens of parents1 worse still of grandparents1 aunts and cousins once gotten rid of2 especially1 if they were of the drunken variety1 as was too often the case4 ,fortunately ,miss ,sellers found a few other homes which promised to receive a pensioner for the sake of his pension1 or from real affection4 ,after all the bitter work-a-day life in these narrow homes1 attics1 cellars1 two or three rooms at most1 would have been more wretched for the pensioners to bear than their blighted hopes4 ,to work a bit harder1 in order to take in one's aged mother1 is not possible in thousands of cases4 ,better to remain a workhouse pauper and be sure of warmth1 cleanliness and food than to wander forth uncared for or to be an unwelcome burden on an overworked child4 ,therefore is it that the ,english ,old ,age ,pension ,act does not solve its own problem1 for the infirm or sick must still be sheltered in some refuge which should have no workhouse taint of pauperism attached to it4 ,however much there may be among us of similar reluctance to take home aged pauper relatives1 it has not yet become a matter of public investigation1 though1 if it were1 it is possible that there would be as much unwillingness manifested here as in ,england4 ,certainly many of our almshouses and homes for the aged poor suggest that there will be the same forlorn hopes shattered1 if pensions should ever be conferred instead of legal residences in almshouses4 ,fortunately for us1 old age is still an individual question4 ,all the more1 then1 should elderly people not let themselves get crabbed4 ,of course1 if other people would not nag one with being old1 one would not be1--quite so old6 ,what old age1 whether poor1 middling or well-to-do lacks is amusement4 ,it is lonesome to keep jolly by remembering that one's mind ought to be one's kingdom4 ,meditation is all very well1 but so also is the circus1 the greatest value of which lies in its non-ethical quality4 ,even if it has its symbolism1 it does not mercilessly set one to moralizing1 save as a three ring circus and a brigade of clowns 7the result of trying to make as much money as possible7 incites to weariness4 ,the real gospel of the circus lies in its democracy1 in its revealings of the power of training on acrobats and animals through kindly persistence1 and in the mutual good will and law abiding qualities of the household of a circus4 ,always has it belonged to the people1 and even ministers have not been discounted for their attendance4 ,it seems a wide jump in fancy from old age to a circus1 and yet to me they are intimately connected through the dear old people1 poor and well to do1 whom ,i have known1 who found in it their objective base for amusement4 ,to them the clown and his jokes were links in the spirit of human brotherhood4 ,alas1 as a pension of five shillings a week will not permit of the circus in its glory1 old age asks for the minor blessings of five cent shows1 public parks1 and good tobacco4 ,just to be out doors is rejuvenating4 ,all the more is amusement desirable1 because legislation has undertaken to set the goal when one shall no longer work4 ,to retire teachers1 officers1 workers1 merely because they are sixty-five or seventy is an insult to human nature1 which rejects any arbitrary limit save that of incapacity4 ,the average of average people1 though perhaps unable to earn their living after seventy1 are still capable of being occupied4 ,therefore let the old folks work at household and woodshed drudgery as long as they can1 however irritating their slowness may be to the young and merciless4 ,let the old serve also in semi-public ways1 because of their experience1 even if they are not wanted round4 ,it is a common saying that it is harder to resign office at seventy than at sixty1 just because old age clings to occupation as its protection4 ,but if with most of us1 if not with all1 as the years increase1 occupation shrivels and the fads or hobbies1 the solace of earlier days1 cease by their very weight to be pursued1--then may there still be amusement provided for the elderly before they become ,shut ,ins1 suggested that they go and get them before anybody else found them4 ,jane thought it would be more comfortable after sundown4 ,mina said that they would be gone before that time1 and insisted that they go at once4 ,outnumbered1 ,jane reluctantly consented4 ,mary must change her dress2 so must the other two4 ,much time was spent in that operation1 for it included the special dressing of the hair1 also4 ,there was much impatience manifested by ,mary1 the first to declare herself ready2 but after the others appeared she suddenly thought of several things that she must attend to4 ,at last each inquired of the others1 ,well1 are you ready8 ,yes1 in a minute1 said ,mina4 ,i forgot to put on cold cream to prevent sunburn4 ,so did ,i1 said ,jane2 and1 ,mary1 you had better use some1 also1 or you will regret it4 ,i think ,i will1 said ,mary2 and a good half hour has passed before they are all downstairs again1 when the old question was asked again1 ,are you ready8 ,had we better wear rubbers8 asked ,jane4 ,no1 answered ,mary1 but ,i am going upstairs to put on an old pair of shoes4 ,that is sensible1 said ,mina4 ,i think we all had better follow ,mary's example1 as it won't take a minute4 ,upstairs they all went again2 much talk and another half hour passed when each made the declaration1 ,well1 ,i am ready1 are you8 with much emphasis on the personal pronoun ,i4 ,are you coming with me8 said ,mary1 and she started in the direction of the pasture with great animation1 when ,jane inquired1 in a loud voice1 if she were not going to take something along to put the berries in4 ,to be sure ,i am4 ,in my hurry ,i entirely forgot it4 ,what shall ,i take8 asked ,mary4 ,we ourselves have not yet decided4 ,which do you think would be better1 ,mary1 a basket or a pail8 ,i don't know and ,i don't care what you take1 ,i am going to take a paper bag1 replied ,mary4 ,it is light and convenient1 and we can easily destroy all evidence of failure in case we fail to get any berries4 ,thank you1 ,mary1 for the happy suggestion4 ,we will take paper bags4 ,what size will be suitable8 ,i think1 said ,jane1 that if we each fill a flour sack1 that will be sufficient for once4 ,it is such a job to carry so many or to make them into jam4 ,to obviate any chance for envy as to which shall gather the greatest amount of berries1 let us take along a common1 large receptacle1 into which each of us shall deposit as often as our smaller vessels shall be filled4 ,that is a thoughtful and wise plan for an unambitious person4 ,i assent to the proposition1 smilingly answered ,mina4 ,a bushel basket was found and all agreed to take turns in carrying it to the pasture4 ,at last1 the procession was formed1 after several more short halts for consultation and criticism1 and was finally under way for the pasture4 ,but when in the highway1 which they had to cross to reach the same1 they were accosted by two ragged boys with1 ,say1 girls1 do you want to buy any berries2 only five cents a quart2 twelve quarts--all there were in the pasture1 every one1 and it's the last picking of the season4 ,oh dear1 ,i told you so2 ,i knew it would be this way1 said ,mary petulantly2 some people are so slow4 ,it is too provoking for anything1 said ,mina1 and it will be so humiliating to return to the house without any berries after making such a hullabaloo1 sighed ,jane4 ,oh1 girls6 exclaimed ,mary1 let's buy the berries of the boys and divide them between us4 ,let's see1 twelve divided by three equals four2 four quarts is a very reasonable and respectable amount for an ordinary person4 ,you hold them while ,i run home and get the money4 ,after the transfer of the berries was completed1 the three girls returned to the house1 triumphantly smiling1 and happy1 with the twelve quarts of berries4 ,mingling with the rest of the family1 ,i could not refrain from speaking about what fun it was to go berrying1 when suddenly grandpa remarked1 that four quarts was a very reasonable and respectable amount for an ordinary person4 ,grandpa had been sitting on a fence1 concealed by bushes1 and had seen the whole performance4 ,a quick1 suspicious1 comprehensive glance constantly asking ourselves1 how we can make our lives worth living4 ,now1 in accordance with the consensus of modern thought1 it would seem that the better way to live is1 while ever taking active interest in the current affairs of the day1 to cherish some lofty aim or purpose1 in other words1 to formulate and cultivate a vision4 ,a vision is the aim1 purpose1 object or ideal we set before us in our several occupations in life4 ,as we find it stated elsewhere1 ,a vision1 a creative vision1 is a pictured goal4 ,there is purpose and vigor in it4 ,it is productive of results1 and the loftier the vision1 the higher the attainment4 ,in life and history it is easy to distinguish the man of vision from him who is without high aim4 ,eat1 drink and be merry is the maxim of the one1 while faithful service in trying to make the conditions of life better1 far and wide1 is characteristic of the other4 ,likewise1 the nature or quality of every man's vision is capable of discernment4 ,certainly no aim or low aim is almost crime4 ,each of us must find his vision in his own occupation or calling in life4 ,there each must strive not only to grow and enrich his own life1 but also that of the few or the many about him1 as chance or environment permits4 ,not for success1 nor health1 nor wealth1 nor fame1 ,i daily beg on bended knee from ,thee2 ,but for ,thy guidance4 ,make my life so such an one can it be said that her life has been lived in vain4 ,does it not follow that the only life worth living is that which is actuated by a real purpose1 a lofty ideal1 a clear vision8 ,how much in the way of successful and happy living depends upon our ideals6 ,let us look well to our aims2 waste no time in idle dreaming1 but keep ever before us some far-away and hopeful vision4 ,,progress ,,and ,,reform ,we believe that progress is made by means of genuine reform4 ,in every instance we find ourselves on the side of wholesome reform1 for in this way only true progress seems to lie4 ,the changes that have taken place within the past fifty years in our educational system are great1 indeed4 ,no doubt these changes have been beneficial in the main1 and yet further changes are still needful4 ,certainly1 according to recent developments1 some change seems to be called for in our reformatory institutions4 ,in general1 it seems to us the transition from our schools and colleges to the imperative duties and occupations of life is too abrupt1 too difficult and sadly unsatisfactory2 at least this is true in case of the majority of young people4 ,education should prepare one to pass easily and readily into some chosen occupation1 and the first need of every human being is the chance to earn a living2 since every one should earn his bread by the sweat of his brow4 ,do our schools fit or unfit our youth for life's real work8 ,can they engage at once and successfully in some congenial occupation8 ,until these questions can be favorably answered1 we advocate reform in our forms of education4 ,labor we must2 a taste1 even a fondness for wholesome1 necessary labor should be cultivated in our schools4 ,it has been stated and confirmed by those in authority that #cjj1jjj1jjj might be saved per year in the conduct of our government on a strictly business basis4 ,if this be true1 here reform1 good and true1 is an imperative need4 ,such a condition of affairs is in no sense humorous4 ,for what do we choose our legislators8 ,is it to squander or conserve the revenues and resources of the ,state8 ,likewise1 in ways of living or the conduct of life1 reform is ever in order1 provided thereby gain can be made4 ,it has been said that ,the whole moral law is based on health4 ,the ideal body is the proper shrine for the ideal soul1--a truth that has yet to be educated into the modern consciousness4 ,righteousness and health should go together4 ,this is an eternal law1--a law that covers society1 education and morality4 ,the real meaning of the word 'temperance' is a careful use of the body4 ,it has nothing primarily to do with mere abstinence from certain forms of pleasure4 ,a man says to himself1 ,i am in possession of a mechanism which will endure a certain amount of wear and usage1 but it is the most delicate of all machinery1 and for that reason it must be used with more consideration than even the fine works of a watch4 ,intemperance1 of any sort1 means unnecessary wear and tear4 ,it increases the waste of the system1 the rapidity of the living process1 so that repair cannot keep up with use1 and it burns where there should be the clear light of life4 ,,don',t ,,kill ,,the ,,birds ,for a number of years the scientific investigators have been arguing that a bird--almost any bird--was worth a good deal more to the country alive than dead2 worth more in the glorious freedom of its habitat than on my lady's hat or on the plate of the epicure4 ,it has been shown by the dissection of birds and the examination of their stomachs just what seeds and insects they eat4 ,these examinations have made it clear that most birds live principally on the seeds of pernicious weeds1 and on the insect and small mammal pests against which the farmer has to wage an increasing fight every year4 ,it is true that some birds damage crops and it is true that any birds will do damage if there are too many of them--just as the extreme congestion of people results in disease and immorality4 ,but under normal conditions of distribution almost any bird is an able assistant to the agriculturist and horticulturist in the protection of his crops against their most dangerous enemies4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the steady increase in the cost of living during the period of a year and a half ending on the last day of ,march1 #aiaj1 commodities1 which enter into the everyday life of the average man1 that prices last ,march were higher than at any time since twenty years ago2 that in that month it cost the consumer #g4e per cent more to buy the necessities of life than it had cost him in ,march1 #aiji2 #aj4b per cent more than in ,august1 #aijh2 #ba4a per cent more than the average range of prices for #aijj2 #di4b per cent more than in #ahig1--;a rate of progression which is causing a country-wide agitation for means and measures of relief4 ,yet it is shown that prices in #aiji1 high as they were1 still ranged #b4c per cent below those for #aijg1 the costliest year in the period beginning with #ahij4 ,,economy1 ,,wise ,,and ,,unwise ,we are trying to publish a magazine in every sense worth renewing4 ,that we are source of mental distress to a neat and conscientious housekeeper1 and often an occasion for slurs from other members of the family4 ,the number of steps to be taken and the motions to be made1 each day1 to keep a house in order and set three meals upon a table are often overlooked or largely underestimated4 ,we are speaking now of the homes of the four-fifths1 where little help outside of the family is available4 ,mothers are thought slow and poky by the younger members of the family1 who are inclined to value the slight and irregular assistance which they give more highly than it deserves4 ,there are members of the family1 perhaps1 who should keep their strength1 mental and physical1 for their work away from home2 but in general the young people should be trained to take a part in the responsibility of the housekeeping and home-making4 ,if boys and girls1 as soon as they are old enough1 be taught to open their beds for airing1 hang up their clothing and leave the bowl and bath tub in suitable condition for the next occupant of the room1 the mother can prepare the breakfast and begin the work of the day without fret as to the condition of the upper part of the house1 or without the mental fatigue that comes where there are so many things to be done at once that one knows not where to begin4 ,often where one maid is kept1 too much is expected of her1 even by the house-mother4 ,with the advent of a maid1 the dishes multiply and time is spent in dish washing that should be given to the larger affairs of the housekeeping4 ,for the mother or one maid the washing of dishes must be regulated to make the work an incident and not the event of the day4 ,we are not protesting against a change of plates1 or forks1 etc41 for the dessert2 but extra dishes for vegetables1 the plate underneath the plate1 both handled and therefore to be washed1 much glassware that requires careful washing and polishing1 all tend to prolong the time at the sink4 ,such work may be increased at will1 when some one is hired for this special purpose1 or when the daughter of the family is willing to take the responsibility of it4 ,for the mother or the one maid1 day in and day out1 more necessary duties must eliminate some of the niceties of table service4 ,we should not be more nice than wise4 ,we believe in work2 it is the refuge and the safeguard of the race3 but there must be times for relaxation and repose1 and1 that this be possible for each member of the family1 there must be a division of labor4 ,if one individual be a drone1 some one else is obliged to work for him4 ,we wish to emphasize the necessity of systematic training1 in the doing of these daily duties1 of the young people in a family4 ,let each child be held responsible for a certain amount of work each day4 ,it will not burden the normal child1 but will give satisfaction and a feeling of being of use in the world4 ,no better time than this1 the vacation season1 can be found for putting in practice the idea herein suggested4 ,we are admonished by many innovations that times have changed4 ,the fact that graduates from ,colleges of ,home ,economics are taught to see the subject in its broad relations1 both to science and to practice1 and that every graduate is expected to have a fair working knowledge of the household-arts and be able to cook a meal or make a dress1 has given the practice of the so-called homely arts an impetus that will do much for the betterment of the race4 ,cooking and sewing have had a renaissance4 ,to be able to cook well is a desideratum to be desired1 and rivalry in pleasing and artistic tea-rooms1 cake and cooky shops and places for the sale of cooked food is abroad in the land4 ,we look to see this same pleasing rivalry displayed in dressmaking rooms and laundries1 where fine work can be essayed4 ,these private and small enterprises1 which might grow into larger ones1 should furnish a generous return for the time and money invested and an increase in the happiness of those employed as well as of those whom they serve4 ,all of these ventures are at once a source of independence to the serving and the served1 and give an opportunity for self-direction that argues well for their permanency4 ,earthen dishes for cooking1 which conserve heat and answer for serving as well as cooking1 are to be commended at all seasons2 but in hot weather1 when it is eminently desirable to limit heat and work1 they are more than ever a source of pleasure and comfort4 ,not so very long ago all such ware was imported1 and the duty1 added to the first cost1 placed it in the list of luxuries1 but now the dainty contours of all these casseroles1 ramekins1 terrines1 au gratin dishes1 etc41 are duplicated in ,american ware1 and at a price that puts the goods within the reach of all4 ,in the seasonable recipes for this issue1 terrine of chicken and ham1 green corn au gratin in ramekins1 and pears ,batrice are cooked in ,guernsey earthen ware4 ,an extremely useful dish in this ware is the mixing bowl in which ,kugelhopf kuchen1 ready for shaping1 is shown4 ,nothing daintier for mixing purposes than this bowl of smooth and highly polished interior can be imagined2 from such a surface any mixture can be rinsed with ease1 and thus the labor of dish washing is lessened1 which is a strong point in favor of any utensil4 ,the ,task home1 which is otherwise so well equipped1 little or no attention is given to the nursery1 and it is to this neglect they trace many of the shortcomings of our little ones4 ,it may be that the busy mother1 who has to perform the duties of nursemaid and perhaps look after her household at the same time1 sees little reason for having a room specially dedicated to the use of the children2 but when one considers the necessity of regularity in the feeding1 bathing1 sleeping1 and every other particular of the infant's daily life1 such a need becomes apparent1 with the arrival of the first baby4 ,select a room in a secluded part of the house1 and one which receives all the sunshine possible1 for the nursery4 ,fresh air should be admitted at all times1 but in such a manner as to avoid drafts4 ,for the use of the young infant1 limit the furnishings to bare necessities1 and have the floor and walls hard finished4 ,it is not well to have plumbing of any kind in the room1 nor should it be directly connected with the bathroom4 ,regulate the temperature carefully1 letting it range between #ge and #hj degrees ,fahr4 during the first week2 after that it may be kept at #ge degrees until the mattress and a thin pillow1 though some persons prefer to use no pillow at all4 ,under no circumstances should the baby sleep with its mother1 and eminent physicians now agree that it is more or less injurious for a child to sleep in the room with an adult4 ,dr4 ,cotton1 the distinguished specialist for children1 recommends1 as additional furnishings for the infant's room1 a flexible rubber stencil designs or a few good pictures1 which should be chosen with reference to the child's age4 ,few persons are aware that until a child is three years old he cannot distinguish clearly between ,reducing and ,increasing ,weight ,in addition to the natural and proper inclination to make the best of oneself1 there is scientific reason in the stout woman's desire to reduce her weight1 and the painfully thin woman's wish to take on a few more pounds of flesh2 health itself is at its best when the body maintains its normal proportions1 without serious loss or gain4 ,any considerable variation from the normal standard shows a disturbance in the balance of nutrition2 either the vital fire is being fed too generously1 and the excess of fuel1 instead of being turned into heat and energy1 is accumulating in the tissues1 to be a burden to the organism and1 perhaps in time1 cause disease1 or else the expenditure of force is greater than the supply of fuel1 the bodily tissues are drawn upon to aid in feeding the fire1 and all the systems of the body suffer from the insufficiency of nourishment4 ,stout people become increasingly disinclined to either physical or mental exertion2 they are apt to suffer from indigestion and constipation1 rheumatic troubles and shortness of breath2 and1 when a condition of actual obesity is reached1 a fatty degeneration of one or more of the vital organs is liable4 ,the insufficiently nourished person1 on the other hand1 is usually anmic and nervous1 the weak and faulty performance of many of the bodily functions testifying to the lack of proper nutrition4 ,with regard to the matter of physical attractiveness1 the advantage of proper proportion between the weight and the height is obvious4 ,the too-thin woman has fewer difficulties to contend with than her too-stout sister1 in fulfilling fashion's requirements1 for her figure can be modified to a far greater extent by the dressmaker's art4 ,but the face and hands cannot be filled out correspondingly1 and the thin woman early takes on lines and wrinkles1 usually looking much older than a plumper woman of the same age4 ,proper balance between the intake of food and the outgo of energy is thus necessary1 both for the maintenance of good health and for the preservation of one's fair share of natural comeliness4 ,the generally-accepted standard of weight in proportion to height which a woman should maintain1 in order to fulfil these requirements1 is as follows3 ,five feet one inch1 #abj pounds2 five feet two inches1 #abf pounds2 five feet three inches1 #acc pounds2 five feet four inches1 #acf pounds2 five feet five inches1 #adb pounds2 five feet six inches1 #ade pounds2 five feet seven inches1 #adi pounds2 five feet eight inches1 #aee pounds2 five feet nine inches1 #afb pounds2 five feet ten inches1 #afi pounds4 ,the purposes for which food is taken into the body are two3 the rebuilding of the bodily tissues1 which are constantly consumed by physical and mental activities1 and the production of heat and energy4 ,during the period of growth1 the body necessarily demands a large amount of tissue-building material1 and it is natural and reasonable that a growing child should have a large appetite1 and be ready to eat at all times of day4 ,if1 however1 a person who has come to maturity continues to eat as heartily as in early life1 more food is taken into the body than is required after the growing period is ended1 a heavy strain is put upon the organs which remove waste products from the system1 and there is likely to be a deposition of fat in the tissues4 ,another factor in producing these results is the fact that the adult usually leads a far less active life1 physically1 than the growing child1 so that less food is needed for transformation into energy1 as well as for the purpose of body-building4 ,this is even more true now than it was a few generations ago2 the higher standard of luxury in the modern manner of life1 labor-saving devices of every kind1 and improved transportation facilities1 which have almost reduced out-door exercise to a matter of country-club athletics1 are among the reasons for the present-day lack of physical activity among both men and women4 ,it must not be forgotten1 however1 that our high-pressure modern life also favors the existence of a class1 who1 instead of feeding their vital fires too generously1 are inadequately nourished2 among the contributing factors in this case are improper food1 hasty and unattractively served meals1 unhygienic ways of living1 and the heavy1 nervous strain that makes havoc of so many lives1 in one way or another4 ,considering first the case of the woman who is above the normal standard of weight1 it may be said in the beginning that there are few stout people who cannot safely1 and without resorting to any dubious measures1 reduce their weight sufficiently to improve not only their appearance1 but their comfort and general vigor as well4 ,such results are not produced in a moment1 however1 and patience1 perseverence and a considerable exercise of will-power may be necessary4 ,any decided deviation from one's usual manner of life should not be undertaken without the advice of a competent physician4 ,constitutions1 have been wrecked1 and even lives lost1 by such tampering with nature's laws4 ,exercise and diet are the two great aids in reducing weight1 but either1 by being carried to extremes1 or attempted under unsuitable conditions1 may do more harm than good4 ,one procedure which cannot be too strongly condemned is the use of the various anti-fat preparations1 which are among the patent medicines that have afflicted a credulous world2 such remedies are worse than useless1 as they may do actual harm by upsetting the digestion1 or otherwise disturbing nutrition1 while it is beyond the power of any drug to control such a complex process as that of the balance between waste and repair in the human body4 ,if the desired effect is actually produced1 it is by a lowering of the general health4 ,many systems of exercises have been recommended for reducing flesh1 especially about the waist and hips1 and1 when used in moderation1 and with a physician's assurance that none of the organs of the body will be injured by their use1 the following out of such a system will not only aid in reducing the weight1 but will improve circulation and nutrition1 and increase the general bodily vigor4 ,the exercises usually recommended consist principally of reaching1 stretching and bending movements1 but breathing exercises are also useful1 as deep breathing aids in burning up fat4 ,stair climbing1 with the body erect and only the ball of the foot placed on each step1 is also highly recommended1 and for reducing the fat on the hips the standing run is especially valuable4 ,tennis1 golf1 bicycling1 and horseback riding1 all aid in keeping down weight4 ,walking is1 however1 the exercise par excellence for stout people2 not a slow and languid saunter1 but a brisk pace1 and a steadily increasing distance4 ,hill climbing1 when there is no danger of overtaxing the heart1 is even more effective than walking on a level4 ,a noted physician1 who has successfully reduced many stout patients1 lately made the statement that many fat people were willing to take any sort of treatment that was ordered for them1 if only their diet was not restricted4 ,it is upon restriction of diet1 however1 that the chief dependence must be placed1 in the reduction of weight2 exercise produces a more rapid burning up of fat in the body1 but superfluous fat cannot be stored up1 if the material for it is not supplied to the system4 ,many famous systems of reduction by restricted diet have been given to the world1 but most of them are so severe that they should only be used under the direction of a physician4 ,all of these systems require a reduction of the total amount of food taken1 a restriction of the quantity of fluid allowed1 and a more or less strict avoidance of those food substances which are most readily turned into fat in the body4 ,most of them also provide for light lunches in the middle of the morning and afternoon1 as these additional meals tend to lessen the appetite at the heavier meals of the day4 ,the fat-making foods include sugars1 starches1 fat meats1 butter and oil4 ,it is not safe to deprive the body entirely of these groups of food substances1 since proper nutrition depends upon a wholesomely balanced diet1 but the amount of them taken by the average person can be very greatly cut down without any danger to health4 ,it is not unusual for a single meal to include a cream soup1 bread and butter1 potatoes1 macaroni1 a starchy vegetable1 such as beans1 a salad dressed with oil1 and a rice or cornstarch pudding1--a list of articles which1 as may readily be seen1 contains a much larger amount of fat-making food than is required by the actual needs of the body4 ,the woman who is in earnest to reduce her weight1 then1 should eat at each meal as little of the sweet or starchy articles of food and of the fats and oils as is compatible with health4 ,soup is best omitted altogether1 not only because the cream soups and pures contain much fat-making material1 but also because as little fluid as possible should be taken with meals4 ,among fish1 salmon1 bluefish and eels contain more fat than the other varieties of sea food4 ,fat meats and all forms of pork should be avoided4 ,the potato is eaten so universally1 appearing upon our tables at almost every meal1 that its omission from the diet often seems a severe deprivation2 however1 it is one of the starchiest of foods1 and should be cut entirely out of a menu planned for the reduction of weight4 ,most of the other vegetables grown below ground are also undesirable for the stout person2 this class includes turnips1 carrots1 parsnips and beets1--not1 however1 onions or radishes4 ,peas and beans also contain a good deal of starch4 ,it is almost impossible to eliminate bread-stuffs from the diet1 yet much indulgence in the bread and butter habit is fatal to the woman who desires to grow thin4 ,bread has least flesh-forming power when thoroughly toasted2 whole-wheat bread contains less starch than that made of the ordinary white flour1 while gluten bread contains still less1 and is the most desirable form for the stout person's use4 ,macaroni and spaghetti1 rice1 and the breakfast cereals are all included in the list of very starchy foods1 and should1 therefore1 be avoided4 ,sweets of every sort--cakes1 pies1 puddings1 ice cream1 confectionery1 chocolate1 jam and preserves--are forbidden to one who is engaged in a flesh-reducing campaign4 ,very little butter should be eaten2 no mayonnaise dressing or olive oil in any form1 no cream1 and not much milk1--none at all with meals4 ,the list of articles allowed includes almost all kinds of fresh fish2 lean meats and chicken2 eggs2 bread in small quantities1 when stale or toasted2 all fresh1 green vegetables1 such as spinach1 lettuce1 celery1 asparagus and tomatoes2 and nearly all kinds of fresh fruits1 except bananas1 which are largely made up of starch4 ,fruits stewed without sugar are also permitted4 ,this is neither a starvation diet nor prison fare1 but it does mean a monotonous bill of fare1 and considerable will-power is required to follow such a regimen for a long period4 ,where a reducing diet is adopted without the advice of a physician1 it is a safer plan to eat smaller portions of the flesh-forming foods than one is accustomed to1 than to cut them out of the menu altogether4 ,drinking liquids with meals is conducive to increase in weight3 not more than one small cup of tea or coffee1 or one small glass of water1 should be taken with a meal4 ,water should1 however1 be taken between meals2 it is dangerous to cut the amount of water taken in twenty-four hours down to a small quantity1 as a deficiency of water in the system is liable to prevent the kidneys from doing their proper work4 ,chocolate and cocoa are fattening4 ,beer and ale are well known to have flesh-forming properties1 and all alcoholic beverages are better avoided4 ,napping after meals aids in putting on flesh1 and should not be indulged in4 ,standing for twenty minutes or half an hour after meals is a help in preventing the deposition of fat about the hips and abdomen1 the erect position promoting a more equal distribution of the products of nutrition4 ,any tendency to constipation is to be prevented4 ,laxative fruits and vegetables1 such as oranges1 apples1 spinach and lettuce1 will be helpful here1 as will a glass of cold water taken on rising in the morning4 ,the dietetic treatment of excessive thinness usually appears to one who is engaged in trying to reduce her weight as liberty to indulge in all the good things of this life4 ,however1 it is sometimes more difficult to build up a thin person than to reduce a stout one2 restriction of diet and persistence in active exercise are practically certain to cause a loss of weight1 while many factors1 besides a too-slender diet1 may be at the bottom of the thin woman's condition4 ,diseases of many different organs1 a run-down nervous condition1 too much hard work and too little rest1 improper food1 and disorders of the digestive tract are among the causes that may produce malnutrition1 and the first measure adopted by the painfully thin person should be a frank talk with her family physician1 as the diet required may not be that intended especially for increasing weight1 but one that shall improve nutrition by remedying the defective working of some organ or system of the body4 ,it is practically hopeless to attempt to build up a patient when the proper conditions cannot be secured2 where there is no possibility of relief from a severe physical1 mental or nervous strain1 where a sufficient amount of sleep is impossible1 or where there can be no escape from an unhygienic way of life1 the wisest dietetic measures will accomplish as much as can be expected of them1 if they merely enable the body to hold its own without further loss of weight and strength4 ,under favoring circumstances1 however1 the sugars1 starches1 fats and oils1 which the stout person must avoid1 are the food substances from which the thin person may expect the most beneficial results4 ,foods difficult of digestion should be excluded from the menu1 as an attack of indigestion might mean a considerable set-back1 but many of the most nourishing and fat-producing articles of food are readily digested and assimilated1 though they should not1 of course1 be used to the exclusion of other kinds of food4 ,a quart or two of milk a day1 when taken in addition to the regular meals1 will often work wonders2 the cream should be stirred into it1 not removed1 and a raw egg may be beaten into an occasional glassful4 ,butter should be spread with a generous hand1 salad dressings should contain as much oil as is practicable1 and a tablespoonful of pure olive oil1 taken after each meal1 will be an effective aid1 and also promote the free action of the bowels1 that is so great a help in bringing about a condition of general good health4 ,properly-made bread1 potatoes1 starchy vegetables1 like beans and peas and corn1 macaroni and spaghetti1 rice1 and the whole array of well-made breakfast cereals1 with a generous supply of sugar and cream1 should be well represented in the thin person's diet4 ,cream sauces should be used frequently with meat1 fish or vegetables1 and cream soups and pures are to be preferred to bouillons and other thin soups4 ,ice cream1 milk puddings1 and other nourishing desserts may have a place in the menu1 as may all sorts of sweet fruits1 chocolate and cocoa1 honey1 maple sugar and syrup1 and even simple and pure confectionery4 ,there are few articles of food that are forbidden to the woman who desires to increase her weight1 except those which put a strain upon the digestion4 ,a luncheon in the middle of the morning and one in the afternoon1 with a glass of hot milk before retiring1 assist very greatly in the building-up process1 while a nap1 or at least a quiet rest1 after the midday meal1 enables the system to put to the best uses the fuel which has been supplied to it4 ,long hours of sleep1 avoidance of hurry and tension1 regular hours for meals and pleasant surroundings1 and conversation at mealtimes1 are all aids in overcoming the tendency to excessive thinness4 ,with regard to both the stout and thin1 it may be said that while the quantity and kind of food which is put into the body is unquestionably the greatest factor in maintaining a proper balance between its waste and repair1 its income and outgo of energy1 it is necessary to take a common-sense view of all the circumstances of each individual case3 to make sure that there is no organ of the body whose functions are improperly performed2 to avoid alike the temptation1 on the one hand1 to decreased activity1 and1 on the other1 the tendency to over-exertion2 to lead a well-balanced and hygienic life2 and to practise1 not only with regard to the pleasures of the table1 but in everything that pertains to both physical and mental health1 that wise choice and different places1 and easily emptied of every article by simply dropping one of the corners4 ,such bags are pretty1 made in colors to correspond with the room in which they are used4 ,when desiring to ,mothers are sometimes at their wits' end to know what to prepare1 and almost sick with discouragement when wholesome1 necessary foods are persistently refused4 ,sometimes a little ingenuity and an appeal to the child's imagination or eye will induce him to eat a good-sized meal when1 at first1 he rejected everything4 ,there are many simple ways of doing this1 and the mother will find any number of her own by experimenting4 ,it is an old custom to cut a slice of bread into slips1 naming them for members of the family or friends1 but it is a procedure which seems to fascinate most little ones ,,the ,,boston ,,cooking-,,school ,,magazine ,,co4--,,boston1 ,,mass4 99 99 99 99 99 ,illustrated ,advertisement ,the ,yankee ,knack ,the story of ,american industrial development has no more fascinating or impressive chapter than that devoted to the discoveries and improvements resulting from the extraordinary inventive genius of the ,new ,england workman4 ,he is never content with things as they are4 ,he is forever experimenting--and successfully4 ,he searches until he finds the soul of the machine1 and from this intimate acquaintance he begins to eliminate and improve4 ,he accomplishes the paradox of perfecting a perfect article4 ,if there is a practicable way to make one part do the work of two1 if some added device will simplify a process or improve a product1 he will not rest till he has worked out the problem4 ,this passion for invention has been from the first a vigorous characteristic of the ,new ,england mind4 ,the early settlers were artisans rather than tillers of the soil2 and when by a bitter struggle with an undeveloped country they had supplied their immediate wants1 they naturally turned again to manufacturing2 and this mechanical bent1 stimulated to alertness by a vigorous climate1 resulted in course of time in an almost incredible mechanical ingenuity--the ,yankee ,knack4 ,this genius for simplification of processes1 this wonderful knack of devising machinery which will do the work of the human hand1 has multiplied the output of our factories3 and this in turn has increased wages and decreased the hours of labor1 and so brought a great uplift into the lives of our workmen2 given them the power to provide better homes for their families1 better education for their children1 and greater leisure in which to work out a broader destiny for themselves4 ,as in the past1 so in the present and the future4 ,the ,yankee ,knack1 which long since turned ,new ,england into a vast workshop1 is still at its age-long task--simplifying1 improving2 lowering cost of production1 ever raising quality of product--and all to the end that the average ,american family shall enjoy today what were luxuries but yesterday1 and gratify in their
