,a fit motto for the history of the ,reformation would be those words out of the history of the ,day of ,pentecost1 ,how hear we1 every man in our own tongue wherein we were born4444the wonderful works of ,god6 ,the ruling thought of the pre-reformation period was not more the maintenance of one ,holy ,roman ,church than of one ,holy ,roman ,empire1 each of which was to comprehend all ,christendom4 ,the language of the ,roman ,church and ,empire was the sacred language in comparison with which the languages of men's common speech were reckoned common and unclean4 ,the coming-in of the ,reformation was the awakening of individual life1 by enforcing the sense of each man's direct responsibility to ,god2 but it was equally the quickening of a true national life4 ,in the light of the new era1 the realization of the promise of the oneness of the ,church was no longer to be sought in the universal dominance of a hierarchical corporation2 nor was the mystery proclaimed by ,paul1 that the nations were fellow-heirs and of one body1 to be fulfilled in the subjugation of all nations to a central potentate4 ,according to the spirit of the ,reformation1 the ,one ,church was to be1 not a corporation1 but a communion - the communion of saints2 and the unity of mankind1 in its many nations1 was to be a unity of the spirit in the bond of mutual peace4 ,the two great works of ,martin ,luther were those by which he gave to the common people a vernacular ,bible and vernacular worship1 that through the one1 ,god might speak directly to the people2 and in the other1 the people might speak directly to ,god4 ,luther's ,bible and ,luther's ,hymns gave life not only to the churches of the ,reformation1 but to ,german nationality and the ,german language4,concerning the hymns of ,luther the words of several notable writers are on record1 and are worthy to be prefixed to the volume of them4 ,says ,spangenberg1 yet in ,luther's life-time1 in his ,preface to the ,cithara ,lutheri1 #aede3 ,one must certainly let this be true1 and remain true1 that among all ,mastersingers from the days of the ,apostles until now1 ,luther is and always will be the best and most accomplished2 in whose hymns and songs one does not find a vain or needless word4 ,all flows and falls in the sweetest and neatest manner1 full of spirit and doctrine1 so that his every word gives outright a sermon of his own1 or at least a singular reminiscence4 ,there is nothing forced1 nothing foisted in or patched up1 nothing fragmentary4 ,the rhymes are easy and good1 the words choice and proper1 the meaning clear and intelligible1 the melodies lovely and hearty1 and in summa all is so rare and majestic1 so full of pith and power1 so cheering and comforting1 that1 in sooth1 you will not find his equal1 much less his master4#a ,the following words have often been quoted from ,samuel ,taylor ,coleridge3 ,luther did as much for the ,reformation by his hymns as by his translation of the ,bible4 ,in ,germany the hymns are known by heart by every peasant2 they advise1 they argue from the hymns1 and every soul in the church praises ,god like a ,christian1 with words which are natural and yet sacred to his mind4 ,a striking passage in an article by ,heine in the ,revue des ,deux ,mondes for ,march1 #ahcd1 is transcribed by ,michelet in his ,life of ,luther3 ,not less remarkable1 not less significant than his prose works1 are ,luther's poems1 those stirring songs which1 as it were1 escaped from him in the very midst of his combats and his necessities like a flower making its way from between rough stones1 or a moonbeam gleaming amid dark clouds4 ,luther loved music2 indeed1 he wrote treatises on the art4 ,accordingly his versification is highly harmonious1 so that he may be called the ,swan of ,eisleben4 ,not that he is by any means gentle or swan-like in the songs which he composed for the purpose of exciting the courage of the people4 ,in these he is fervent1 fierce4 ,the hymn which he composed on his way to ,worms1 and which he and his companion chanted as they entered that city1 #b is a regular war-song4 ,the old cathedral trembled when it heard these novel sounds4 ,the very rooks flew from their nests in the towers4 ,that hymn1 the ,marseillaise of the ,reformation1 has preserved to this day its potent spell over ,german hearts4 ,the words of ,thomas ,carlyle are not less emphatic1 while they penetrate deeper into the secret of the power of ,luther's hymns3 ,the great ,reformer's love of music and poetry1 it has often been remarked1 is one of the most significant features in his character4 ,but indeed if every great man is intrinsically a poet1 an idealist1 with more or less completeness of utterance1 which of all our great men1 in these modern ages1 had such an endowment in that kind as ,luther8 ,he it was1 emphatically1 who stood based on the spiritual world of man1 and only by the footing and power he had obtained there1 could work such changes on the material world4 ,as a participant and dispenser of divine influence1 he shows himself among human affairs a true connecting medium and visible messenger between heaven and earth1 a man1 therefore1 not only permitted to enter the sphere of poetry1 but to dwell in the purest centre thereof1 perhaps the most inspired of all teachers since the ,apostles4 ,unhappily or happily1 ,luther's poetic feeling did not so much learn to express itself in fit words1 that take captive every ear1 as in fit actions1 wherein1 truly under still more impressive manifestations1 the spirit of spheral melody resides and still audibly addresses us4 ,in his written poems1 we find little save that strength of on 'whose words1' it has been said1 'were half-battles'#c- little of that still harmony and blending softness of union which is the last perfection of strength - less of it than even his conduct manifested4 ,with words he had not learned to make music - it was by deeds of love or heroic valor that he spoke freely4 ,nevertheless1 though in imperfect articulation1 the same voice1 if we listen well1 is to be heard also in his writings1 in his poems4 ,the one entitled ,ein' ,feste ,burg1 universally regarded as the best1 jars upon our ears2 yet there is something in it like the sound of ,alpine avalanches1 or the first murmur of earthquakes1 in the very vastness of which dissonance a higher unison is revealed to us4 ,luther wrote this song in times of blackest threatenings1 which1 however1 could in no sense become a time of despair4 ,in these tones1 rugged and broken as they are1 do we hear the accents of that summoned man1 who answered his friends' warning not to enter ,worms1 in this wise3 - ',were there as many devils in ,worms as these tile roofs1 ,i would on'2 of him who1 alone in that assemblage before all emperors and principalities and powers1 spoke forth these final and forever memorable words1 - ',it is neither safe nor prudent to do aught against conscience4 ,till such time as either by proofs from holy ,scripture1 or by fair reason or argument1 ,i have been confuted and convicted1 ,i cannot and will not recant4 ,here ,i stand - ,i cannot do otherwise - ,god be my help1 ,amen4' ,it is evident enough that to this man all popes1 cardinals1 emperors1 devils1 all hosts and nations were but weak1 weak as the forest with all its strong trees might be to the smallest spark of electric fire4 ,in a very different style of language1 but in a like strain of eulogy1 writes ,dr4 ,merle d',aubigne1 in the third volume of his ,history of the ,reformation3 ,the church was no longer composed of priests and monks2 it was now the congregation of believers4 ,all were to take part in worship1 and the chanting of the clergy was to be succeeded by the psalmody of the people4 ,luther1 accordingly1 in translating the psalms1 thought of adapting them to be sung by the church4 ,thus a taste for music was diffused throughout the nation4 ,from ,luther's time1 the people sang2 the ,bible inspired their songs4 ,poetry received the same impulse4 ,in celebrating the praises of ,god1 the people could not confine themselves to mere translations of ancient anthems4 ,the souls of ,luther and of several of his contemporaries1 elevated by their faith to thoughts the most sublime1 excited to enthusiasm by the struggles and dangers by which the church at its birth was unceasingly threatened1 inspired by the poetic genius of the ,old ,testament and by the faith of the ,new1 ere long gave vent to their feelings in hymns1 in which all that is most heavenly in poetry and music was combined and blended4 ,hence the revival1 in the sixteenth century1 of hymns such as in the first century used to cheer the martyrs in their sufferings4 ,we have seen ,luther1 in #aebc1 employing it to celebrate the martyrs at ,brussels2 other children of the ,reformation followed his footsteps2 hymns were multiplied2 they spread rapidly among the people1 and powerfully contributed to rouse it from sleep4 ,it is not difficult to come approximately at the order of composition of ,luther's hymns4 ,the earliest hymn-book of the ,reformation - if not the earliest of all printed hymn-books - was published at ,wittenberg in #aebd1 and contained eight hymns1 four of them from the pen of ,luther himself2 of the other four not less than three were by ,paul ,speratus1 and one of these three1 the hymn ,es ist das ,heil1 which caused ,luther such delight when sung beneath his window by a wanderer from ,prussia4#d ,three of ,luther's contributions to this little book were versions of ,psalms - the xii1 xiv1 and cxxx - and the fourth was that touching utterance of personal religious experience1 ,nun fruet euch1 lieben ,christen g'mein4 ,but the critics can hardly be mistaken in assigning as early a date to the ballad of the ,martyrs of ,brussels4 ,their martyrdom took place ,july #a1 #aebc1 and the ,new ,song must have been inspired by the story as it was first brought to ,wittenberg1 although it is not found in print until the ,enchiridion1 which followed the ,eight ,hymns1 later in the same year1 from the press of ,erfurt1 and contained fourteen of ,luther's hymns beside the four already published4 ,in the hymn-book published in #aebe by the composer ,walter1 ,luther's friend1 were six more of the ,luther hymns4 ,and in #aebf appeared the ,german ,mass and ,order of ,divine ,service1 containing the ,german ,sanctus1 a versification of ,isaiah vi4 ,of the remaining eleven1 six appeared first in the successive editions of ,joseph ,klug's hymn-book1 ,wittenberg1 #aece and #aedc4;,it is appropriate to the commemorative character of the present edition that in it the hymns should be disposed in chronological order4 ,the ,,tunes which are here printed with the hymns of ,luther are of those which were set to them during his lifetime4 ,some of them1 like the hymns to which they were set1 are derived from the more ancient hymnody of the ,german and ,latin churches4 ,others1 as the tunes ,vom ,himmel hoch1 ,ach ,gott vom ,himmel1 and ,christ unser ,herr zum ,jordan kam1 are conjectured to have been originally secular airs4 ,but that many of the tunes that appeared simultaneously and in connection with ,luther's hymns were original with ,luther himself1 there seems no good reason to doubt4 ,luther's singular delight and proficiency in music are certified by a hundred contemporary testimonies4 ,his enthusiasm for it overflows in his ,letters and his ,table ,talk4 ,he loved to surround himself with accomplished musicians1 with whom he would practise the intricate motets of the masters of that age2 and his critical remarks on their several styles are on record4 ,at least one autograph document proves him to have been a composer of melodies to his own words3 one may see1 appended to von ,winterfeld's fine quarto edition of ,luther's hymns 7,leipzig1 #ahdj7 a fac-simile of the original draft of ,vater ,unser1 with a melody sketched upon a staff of five lines1 and then cancelled1 evidently by hand practised in musical notation4 ,but perhaps the most direct testimony to his actual work as a composer is found in a letter from the composer ,john ,walter1 capellmeister to the ,elector of ,saxony1 written in his old age for the express purpose of embodying his reminiscences of his illustrious friend as a church-musician4 ,it is to my certain knowledge1 writes ,walter1 that that holy man of ,god1 ,luther1 prophet and apostle to the ,german nation1 took great delight in music1 both in choral and in figural composition4 ,with whom ,i have passed many a delightful hour in singing2 and oftentimes have seen the dear man wax so happy and merry in heart over the singing as that it was well-nigh impossible to weary or content him therewithal4 ,and his discourse concerning music was most noble4 ,some forty years ago1 when he would set up the ,german ,mass at ,wittenberg1 he wrote to the ,elector of ,saxony and ,duke ,johannsen1 of illustrious memory1 begging to invite to ,wittenberg the old musician ,conrad ,rupff and myself1 to consult with him as to the character and the proper notation of the ,eight ,tones2 and he finally himself decided to appropriate the ,eighth ,tone to the ,epistle and the ,sixth ,tone to the ,gospel1 speaking on this wise3 ,our ,lord ,christ is a good ,friend1 and his words are full of love2 so we will take the ,sixth ,tone for the ,gospel4 ,and since ,saint ,paul is a very earnest apostle we will set the ,eighth ,tone to the ,epistle4 ,so he himself made the notes over the ,epistles1 and the ,gospels1 and the ,words of ,institution of the true ,body and ,blood of ,christ1 and sung them over to me to get my judgment thereon4 ,he kept me three weeks long at ,wittenberg1 to write out the notes over some of the ,gospels and ,epistles1 until the first ,german ,mass was sung in the parish church4 ,and ,i must needs stay to hear it1 and take with me a copy of the ,mass to ,torgau and present it to ,his ,grace the ,elector from ,doctor ,luther4 ,furthermore1 he gave orders to re-establish the ,vespers1 which in many places were fallen into disuse1 with short plain choral hymns for the students and boys2 withal1 that the charity-scholars1 collecting their bread1 should sing from door to door ,latin ,hymns1 ,anthems and ,responses1 appropriate to the season4 ,it was no satisfaction to him that the scholars should sing in the streets nothing but ,german songs4444,the most profitable songs for the common multitude are the plain psalms and hymns1 both ,luther's and the earlier ones2 but the ,latin songs are useful for the learned and for students4 ,we see1 and hear1 and clearly apprehend how the ,holy ,ghost himself wrought not only in the authors of the ,latin hymns1 but also in ,luther1 who in our time has had the chief part both in writing the ,german choral hymns1 and in setting them to tunes2 as may be seen1 among others in the ,german ,sanctus 7,jesaia dem ,propheten das geschah7 how masterly and well he has fitted all the notes to the text1 according to the just accent and concent4 ,at the time1 ,i was moved by ,his ,grace to put the question how or where he had got this composition1 or this instruction2 whereupon the dear man laughed at my simplicity1 and said3 ,i learned this of the poet ,virgil1 who has the power so artfully to adapt his verses and his words to the story he is telling2 in like manner must ,music govern all its notes and melodies by the text4#e ,it seems superfluous to add to this testimony the word of ,sleidan1 the nearly contemporary historian1 who says expressly concerning ,ein' feste ,burg that ,luther made for it a tune singularly suited to the words1 and adapted to stir the heart4#f ,if ever there were hymn and tune that told their own story of a common and simultaneous origin1 without need of confirmation by external evidence1 it is these4 ,to an extent quite without parallel in the history of music1 the power of ,luther's tunes1 as well as of his words1 is manifest after three centuries1 over the masters of the art1 as well as over the common people4 ,peculiarly is thistrue of the great song ,ein' feste ,burg1 which ,heine not vainly predicted would again be heard in ,europe in like manner as of old4 ,the composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries practised their elaborate artifices upon it4 ,the supreme genius of ,sebastian ,bach made it the subject of study4#g ,and in our own times it has been used with conspicuous effect in ,mendelssohn's ,reformation ,symphony1 in an overture by ,raff1 in the noble, festouverture of ,nicolai1 and in ,wagner's ,kaisermarsch2 and is introduced with recurring emphasis in ,meyerbeer's masterpiece of ,the ,huguenots4 ,it is needless to say that the materials of this ,birth- day ,edition of ,luther's ,hymns and ,tunes have been prepared in profusion by the diligence of ,german scholars4 ,but very thankful acknowledgments are also due to ,english translators1 who have made this work possible within the very scanty time allotted to it4 ,full credit is given in the table of contents for the help derived from these various translators4 ,but the exigencies of this volume were peculiarly severe1 inasmuch as the translation was to be printed over against the original1 and also under the music4 ,not even ,mr4 ,richard ,massie's careful work would always bear this double test2 so that ,i have found myself compelled1 in most cases1 to give up the attempt to follow any translation exactly2 and in some instances have reluctantly attempted a wholly new version4 ,the whole credit of the musical editorship belongs to my accomplished associate1 ,mr4 ,nathan ,h4 ,allen1 without whose ready resource and earnest labor the work would have been impossible within the limits of time necessarily prescribed4 ,in the choice of harmonies for these ancient tunes1 he has wisely preferred1 in general1 the arrangements of the older masters4 ,the critical musician will see1 and will not complain1 that the original modal structure of the melodies is sometimes affected by the harmonic treatment4 ,and now the proper conclusion to this ,introduction1 which1 like the rest of the volume1 is in so slight a degree the work of the editor1 is to add the successive prefaces from the pen of ,luther which accompanied successive hymn-books published during his life-time and under his supervision4 ,,leonard ,,woolsey ,,bacon #a ,quoted in the ,christian ,examiner1 #ahfj1 p4 #bdj2 transcribed ,philadelphia1 #ahge4 #b ,the popular impression that the hymn ,ein' feste ,burg was produced in these circumstances is due1 doubtless1 to a parallel in the third stanza1 to the famous saying imputed to ,luther on the eve of the ,diet of ,worms3 ,i'll go1 be there as many devils in the city as there be tiles on the roofs4 ,the time of its composition was in the year #aebi1 just before the ,diet of ,augsburg4 ,if not written in his temporary refuge1 the noble ,burg or ,festung of ,coburg1 it must often have been sung there by him2 and it was sung1 says ,merle d',aubigne1 during the ,diet1 not only at ,augsburg1 but in all the churches of ,saxony4 #c ,this much-quoted phrase is from ,richter4 ,it is reported as an expression of ,melanchthon1 looking on ,luther's picture1 ,fulmina erant singula verba tua4 #d ,merle d',aubigne1 ,history of the ,reformation1 ,vol4 ,,iii4 #e ,this interesting and characteristic document was printed first in the ,syntagma ,musicum of ,michael ,praetorius1 many of whose harmonies are to be found in this volume4 ,it has been repeatedly copied since4 ,i take it from ,rambach1 ,ueber ,d4 ,martin ,luthers ,verdienst um den ,kirchengesang1 oder ,darstellung desjenigen was er als ,liturg1 als ,liederdichter und ,tonsetzer zur ,verbesserung des oeffentlichen ,gottesdienstes geleistet hat4 ,hamburg1 #ahac4 #f ,quoted in durch ,peter schoeffern getruckt1 im jar m4 d4 xxv4 ,autore ,ioanne ,walthero4 ,that it is good1 and pleasing to ,god1 for us to sing spiritual songs is1 ,i think1 a truth whereof no ,christian can be ignorant2 since not only the example of the prophets and kings of the ,old ,testament 7who praised ,god with singing and music1 poesy and all kind of stringed instruments7 but also the like practice of all ,christendom from the beginning1 especially in respect to psalms1 is well known to every one3 yea1 ,st4 ,paul doth also appoint the same 7,i ,cor4 xiv47 and command the ,colossians1 in the third chapter1 to sing spiritual songs and psalms from the heart unto the ,lord1 that thereby the word of ,god and ,christian doctrine be in every way furthered and practiced4 ,accordingly1 to make a good beginning and to encourage others who can do it better1 ,i have myself1 with some others1 put together a few hymns1 in order to bring into full play the blessed ,gospel1 which by ,god's grace hath again risen3 that we may boast1 as ,moses doth in his song 7,exodus xv47 that ,christ is become our praise and our song1 and that1 whether we sing or speak1 we may not know anything save ,christ our ,saviour1 as ,st4 ,paul saith 7,i ,cor4 ii74 ,these songs have been set in four parts1 for no other reason than because ,i wished to provide our young people 7who both will and ought to be instructed in music and other sciences7 with something whereby they might rid themselves of amorous and carnal songs1 and in their stead learn something wholesome1 and so apply themselves to what is good with pleasure1 as becometh the young4 ,beside this1 ,i am not of opinion that all sciences should be beaten down and made to cease by the ,gospel1 as some fanatics pretend2 but ,i would fain see all the arts1 and music in particular1 used in the service of ,him who hath given and created them4 ,therefore ,i entreat every pious ,christian to give a favorable reception to these hymns1 and to help forward my undertaking1 according as ,god hath given him more or less ability4 ,the world is1 alas1 not so mindful and diligent to train and teach our poor youth1 but that we ought to be forward in promoting the same4 ,god grant us his grace4 ,amen4 ,luther's ,second ,preface4 ,to the ,funeral ,hymns3 ,christliche ,geseng1 ,lateinisch und ,deudsch1 zum ,begrebnis4 ,wittemberg1 ,anno m4 d4 xlii4 ,,dr4 ,,martin ,,luther ,,to ,,the ,,christian ,,reader4 ,st4 ,paul writes to the ,thessalonians1 that they should not sorrow for the dead as others who have no hope1 but should comfort one another with ,god's word1 as they who have a sure hope of life and of the resurrection of the dead4 ,for that they should sorrow who have no hope is not to be wondered at1 nor indeed are they to be blamed for it1 since1 being shut out from the faith of ,christ1 they must either regard and love the present life only1 and be loth to lose it1 or after this life look for everlasting death and the wrath of ,god in hell1 and be unwilling to go thither4 ,but we ,christians who from all this have been redeemed by the precious blood of the ,son of ,god1 should exercise and wont ourselves in faith to despise death1 to look on it as a deep1 sound1 sweet sleep1 the coffin no other than the bosom of our ,lord ,christ1 or paradise1 the grave nought but a soft couch of rest2 as indeed it is in the sight of ,god1 as he saith in ,st4 ,john1 xi41 our friend ,lazarus sleepeth2 ,matthew ix41 the maid is not dead but sleepeth4 ,in like manner also ,st4 ,paul1 ,i ,cor4 xv41 doth put out of sight the unlovely aspect of death in our perishing body1 and bring forward nought but the lovely and delightsome view of life1 when he saith3 ,it is sown in corruption2 it is raised in incorruption2 it is sown in dishonor 7that is1 in a loathsome and vile form72 it is raised in glory3 it is sown in weakness2 it is raised in power3 it is sown a natural body2 it is raised a spiritual body4 ,accordingly have we1 in our churches1 abolished1 done away1 and out-and-out made an end of the popish horrors1 such as wakes1 masses for the soul1 obsequies1 purgatory1 and all other mummeries for the dead1 and will no longer have our churches turned into wailing-places and houses of mourning1 but1 as the primitive ,fathers called them1 ,cemeteries1 that is1 resting and sleeping places4 ,we sing1 withal1 beside our dead and over their graves1 no dirges nor lamentations1 but comforting songs of the forgiveness of sins1 of rest1 sleep1 live and resurrection of the departed believers1 for the strengthening of our faith1 and the stirring up of the people to a true devotion4 ,for it is meet and right to give care and honor to the burial of the dead1 in a manner worthy of that blessed article of our creed1 the resurrection of the dead1 and to the spite of that dreadful enemy1 death1 who doth so shamefully and continually prey upon us1 in every horrid way and shape4 ,accordingly1 as we read1 the holy patriarchs1 ,abraham1 ,isaac1 ,jacob1 ,joseph1 and the rest1 kept their burials with great pomp1 and ordered them with much diligence2 and afterwards the kings of ,judah held splendid ceremonials over the dead1 with costly incense of all manner of precious herbs1 thereby to hide the offense and shame of death1 and acknowledge and glorify the resurrection of the dead1 and so to comfort the weak in faith and the sorrowful4 ,in like manner1 even down to this present1 have ,christians ever been wont to do honorably by the bodies and the graves of the dead1 decorating them1 singing beside them and adorning them with monuments4 ,of all importance is that doctrine of the resurrection1 that we be firmly grounded therein2 for it is our lasting1 blessed1 eternal comfort and joy1 against death1 hell1 the devil and all sorrow of heart4 ,as a good example of what should be used for this end1 we have taken the sweet music or melodies which under popish rule are in use at wakes1 funerals and masses for the dead1 some of which we have printed in this little book2 and it is in our thought1 as time shall serve1 to add others to them1 or have this done by more competent hands4 ,but we have set other words thereto1 such as shall adorn our doctrine of the resurrection1 not that of purgatory with its pains and expiations1 whereby the dead may neither sleep nor rest4 ,the notes and melodies are of great price2 it were pity to let them perish2 but the words to them were unchristian and uncouth1 so let these perish4 ,it is just as in other matters they do greatly excel us1 having splendid rites of worship1 magnificent convents and abbeys2 but the preachings and doctrines heard therein do for the most part serve the devil and dishonor ,god2 who nevertheless is ,lord and ,god over all the earth1 and should have of everything the fairest1 best and noblest4 ,likewise have they costly shrines of gold and silver1 and images set with gems and jewels2 but within are dead men's bones1 as foul and corrupt as in any charnel-house4 ,so also have they costly vestments1 chasubles1 palliums1 copes1 hoods1 mitres1 but what are they that be clothed therewithal8 slow- bellies1 evil wolves1 godless swine1 persecuting and dishonoring the word of ,god4,just in the same way have they much noble music1 especially in the abbeys and parish churches1 used to adorn most vile1 idolatrous words4 ,wherefore we have undressed these idolatrous1 lifeless1 crazy words1 stripping off the noble music1 and putting it upon the living and holy word of ,god1 wherewith to sing1 praise and honor the same1 that so the beautiful ornament of music1 brought back to its right use1 may serve its blessed ,maker and his ,christian people2 so that he shall be praised and glorified1 and that we by his holy word impressed upon the heart with sweet songs1 be builded up and confirmed in the faith4 ,hereunto help us ,god the ,father1 ,son and ,holy ,ghost4 ,amen4 ,yet is it not our purpose that these precise notes be sung in all the churches4 ,let each church keep its own notes according to its book and use4 ,for ,i myself do not listen with pleasure in cases where the notes to a hymn or a respon- sorium have been changed1 and it is sung amongst us in a different way from what ,i have been used to from my youth4 ,the main point is the correcting of the words1 not of the music4 ,then follow selections of ,scripture recommended as suitable for epitaphs4 ,luther's ,third ,preface4 ,to the ,hymn-book printed at ,wittenberg by ,joseph ,klug1 #aedc4 ,there are certain who1 by their additions to our hymns1 have clearly shown that they far excel me in this matter1 and may well be called my masters4 ,but some1 on the other hand1 have added little of value4 ,and inasmuch as ,i see that there is no limit to this perpetual amending by every one indiscriminately according to his own liking1 so that the earliest of our hymns are more perverted the more they are printed1 ,i am fearful that it will fare with this little book as it has ever fared with good books1 that through tampering by incompetent hands it may get to be so overlaid and spoiled that the good will be lost out of it1 and nothing be kept in use but the worthless4 ,we see in the first chapter of ,st4 ,luke that in the beginning every one wanted to write a gospel1 until among the multitude of gospels the true ,gospel was well-nigh lost4 ,so has it been with the works of ,st4 ,jerome and ,st4 ,augustine1 and with many other books4 ,in short1 there will always be tares sown among the wheat4 ,in order as far as may be to avoid this evil1 ,i have once more revised this book1 and put our own hymns in order by themselves with name attached1 which formerly ,i would not do for reputation's sake1 but am now constrained to do by necessity1 lest strange and unsuitable songs come to be sold under our name4 ,after these1 are arranged the others1 such as we deem good and useful4 ,i beg and beseech all who prize ,god's pure word that henceforth without our knowledge and consent no further additions or alterations be made in this book of ours2 and that when it is amended without our knowledge1 it be fully understood to be not our book published at ,wittenberg4 ,every man can for himself make his own hymn-book1 and leave this of ours alone without additions2 as we here beg1 beseech and testify4 ,for we like to keep our coin up to our own standard1 debarring no man from making better for himself4 ,now let ,god's name alone be praised1 and our name not sought4 ,amen4 ,luther's ,fourth ,preface ,to ,valentine ,bapst's ,hymn-book1 ,leipzig1 #aede4 ,the xcvi ,psalm saith3 ,sing to the ,lord a new song2 sing to the ,lord1 all the earth4 ,the service of ,god in the old dispensation1 under the law of ,moses1 was hard and wearisome4 ,many and divers sacrifices had men to offer1 of all that they possessed1 both in house and in field1 which the people1 being idle and covetous1 did grudgingly or for some temporal advantage2 as the prophet ,malachi saith1 chap4 i41 who is there even among you that would shut the doors for naught8 neither do ye kindle fires on my altars for naught4 ,but where there is such an idle and grudging heart there can be no singing1 or at least no singing of any good4 ,cheerful and merry must we be in heart and mind1 when we would sing4 ,therefore hath ,god suffered such idle and grudging service to perish1 as he saith further3 ,i have no pleasure in you1 saith the ,lord of ,hosts1 neither will ,i accept an offering at your hand3 for from the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same1 my name shall be great among the ,gentiles2 and in every place incense shall be offered in my name and a pure offering2 for my name shall be great among the heathen1 saith the ,lord of ,hosts4 ,so that now in the ,new ,testament there is a better service1 whereof the psalm speaketh3 ,sing to the ,lord a new song2 sing to the ,lord all the earth4 ,for ,god hath made our heart and mind joyful through his dear ,son whom he hath given for us to redeem us from sin1 death and the devil4 ,who earnestly believes this cannot but sing and speak thereof with joy and delight1 that others also may hear and come4 ,but whoso will not speak and sing thereof1 it is a sign that he doth not believe it1 and doth not belong to the cheerful ,new ,testament but to the dull and joyless ,old ,testament4 ,therefore it is well done on the part of the printers that they are diligent to print good hymns1 and make them agreeable to the people with all sorts of embellishments1 that they may be won to this joy in believing and gladly sing of it4 ,and inasmuch as this edition of ,valtin ,bapst ,pope is prepared in fine style1 ,god grant that it may bring great hurt and damage to that ,roman ,bapst who by his accursed1 intolerable and abominable ordinances has brought nothing into the world but wailing1 mourning and misery4 ,amen4 ,i must give notice that the song which is sung at funerals1 ,nun lasst uns den ,leib begraben1 which bears my name is not mine1 and my name is henceforth not to stand with it4 ,not that ,i reject it1 for ,i like it very much1 and it was made by a good poet1 ,johannes ,weis99 by name1 only a little visionary about the ,sacrament2 but ,i will not appropriate to myself another man's work4 ,also in the ,de ,profundis1 read thus3 ,des muss dich fuerchten jedermann4 ,either by mistake or of purpose this is printed in most books ,des muss sich fuerchten jedermann4 ,ut timearis4 ,the ,hebrew reading is as in ,matthew xv43 ,in vain do they fear me teaching doctrines of men4 ,see also ,psalms xiv4 and liii43 ,they call not on the ,lord2 there feared they where no fear was4 ,that is1 they may have much show of humiliation and bowing and bending in worship where ,i will have no worship4 ,accordingly this is the meaning in the place3 ,since forgiveness of sins is nowhere else to be found but only with thee1 so must they let go all idolatry1 and come with a willing heart bowing and bending before thee1 creeping up to the cross1 and have thee alone in honor1 and take refuge in thee1 and serve thee1 as living by thy grace and not by their own righteousness1 etc4 99,luther's mistake for ,michael ,weysse1 author of a ,moravian hymn-book of #aeca4 ,a ,preface to ,all ,good ,hymn-,books4 ,by ,dr4 ,martin ,luther4 ,from ,joseph
