,besides briefly describing ,yosemite ,valley1 its scenic features1 and the immediately adjacent portion of the ,sierra1 detailed information has been introduced concerning each trail and road in the region4 ,these are described just as they are actually followed1 and attention is called to each point of interest just as it is discovered during the trip itself4 ,as far as possible1 complete data has been introduced on condition of trails1 time required to make the trips1 fishing1 camp sites1 forage conditions1 etc41 in short all kinds of information which would be demanded of a hired guide4 ,the original draft of this ,handbook was prepared in collaboration with ,forest ,s4 ,townsley1 ,chief ,ranger of ,yosemite ,national ,park4 ,later1 each of the ,park ,rangers suggested valuable additions1 and several members of the ,sierra ,club contributed bits of valuable information4 ,the author has freely consulted old books and pamphlets in the ,bancroft ,historical ,library at the ,university of ,california and has included several points of historical interest4 ,acknowledgment is also due to ,mr4 ,herbert ,maier for the drawings and maps here reproduced and to the ,united the western ranges is the ,sierra ,nevada1 a long and massive uplift lying between the arid deserts of the ,great ,basin and the ,californian exuberance of grain-fields and orchards2 its eastern slope1 a defiant wall of rock plunging abruptly down to the plain2 the western1 a long1 dry sweep1 well watered and overgrown with cool1 stately forests2 its crest a line of sharp1 snowy peaks springing into the sky and catching the alpenglow long after the sun has set for all the rest of ,america4#a #a ,from ,mountaineering in the ,sierra ,nevada1 by ,charles ,king4 ,about midway between the north and south ends of this ,snowy ,range and extending from the ragged summits of its eastern edge to the semi-arid foothills at the west1 lies ,yosemite ,national ,park1 #aabe square miles of incomparable scenic beauty4 ,yosemite ,valley1 contrary to most peoples' preconceived idea1 lies fully #be miles west of the ,sierra crest4 ,it is countersunk #djjj feet into the granite of the gently inclined plateau1 which above its rim averages from #gjjj to #hjjj feet in elevation4 ,the characteristics of this region immediately adjacent to ,yosemite ,valley are different from those of the ,high ,sierra to the past4 ,very little of it is above the timber-line1 as the dominating summits--,mount ,hoffman 7#aj1iba7 at the north1 ,clouds ,rest 7#iibd7 at the east1 ,mount ,starr ,king 7#iagi7 at the southeast1 and ,horse ,ridge 7#ifjj7 at the south--average less than #aj1jjj feet in altitude4 ,the magnificent forests with which the slopes are clothed are interspersed with perfectly formed granite domes1 with meadows and wild-flower gardens1 with polished granite pavements1 and with innumerable manifestations of ,nature which give the trails of the region an ever-changing charm4 ,,yosemite ,,valley ,bisecting this district from east to west is the great trough of ,yosemite ,valley1 its bottom gouged down more than half way to sea level4 ,the same type of geological architecture is exemplified by the ,hetch ,hetchy a few miles to the north and by the canyons of the ,san ,joaquin1 ,kings and ,kern to the south4 ,in none of these however1 are magnitude1 beauty and accessibility so ideally combined as in ,yosemite4 ,,origin ,as to the origin of these valleys1 and of ,yosemite in particular1 there is still some discussion among scientists4 ,whitney's old theory of a great cataclysm and the sinking of a small block of the earth's crust has been entirely displaced1 and geologists are now seeking to determine if glaciers have been solely responsible for the present landscape or whether ice and water worked hand in hand4 ,a good summary of the various theories of geological history1 as well as a popular discussion of all the geological phenomena of the region1 is contained in the ,sketch of ,yosemite ,national ,park and an ,account of the ,origin of ,yosemite and ,hetch ,hetchy ,valleys1 by ,dr4 ,f4 ,e4 ,matthes of the ,u4,s4 ,geological ,survey4 ,this government publication may be obtained in ,yosemite at the office of the ,superintendent for ten cents4 ,,early ,,history ,yosemite ,valley remained undiscovered by white men until in #ahej marauding ,indian bands from the mountains raided several foothill trading posts4 ,in retaliation the ,mariposa ,battalion was organized to subdue these mountain tribes and force them into a large reservation1 the ,san ,joaquin ,valley4 ,the last to be conquered and the most warlike were the ,yosemites living in fancied security in their stronghold1 the deep grassy valley of ,awahnee4 ,it was in pursuit of this tribe that the members of the ,mariposa ,battalion first entered ,yosemite on ,march #ba1 #ahea4 ,the story of the one-sided campaigns which extended over two summers is well told by ,dr4 ,w4 ,l4 ,bunnell1 the surgeon of the party1 in his ,discovery of the ,yosemite and the ,indian ,war of #ahea 7#dth ,edition1 #aiaa1 ,g4 ,w4 ,gerlicher1 ,los ,angeles74 ,an excellent summary of the early history of ,yosemite ,valley has recently been published as a ,park ,service bulletin and may be obtained free at the government information bureau in ,yosemite4 ,,general ,,features ,,of ,,the ,,valley ,all points of scenic interest are indicated in the road and trail trips1 but the following brief discussion of the major features of the valley may serve to orient the new-comer4 ,in this connection the aeroplane-view frontispiece will be found exceedingly useful4 ,first and most impressive are the great rock masses4 ,the square-cut #cbjj foot cliff of ,el ,capitan at the ,gates of the ,valley is regarded by many as the most awe-inspiring of all great rocks2 yet others affirm that ,half ,dome1 a few miles eastward1 is just as mighty and far more lovable4 ,the castellated ,cathedral ,rocks rising half to two-thirds as high as ,el ,capitan on the opposite side of the valley are dwarfed in comparison1 but are given an individual personality by their exceptional outline4 ,just eastward1 the marvelously delicate pinnacles of the ,cathedral ,spires1 each towering over #ejj feet from its base1 stand out from the great south wall4 ,less interesting but very mighty are the ,three ,brothers1 rising #chjj feet as a great buttress of the north wall4 ,opposite them the ,sentinel ,rock1 a huge obelisk-like watch tower1 guards the south ramparts4 ,at the upper end of the valley the dome formation is dominant4 ,to the north are the rounded summits of ,north ,dome1 ,basket ,dome and ,mount ,watkins4 ,the granite walls below them have fractured in great concentric arcs1 forming the marvelously symmetrical ,royal ,arches1 at the east end of which is the striking vertical promontory of ,washington ,column4 ,at the edge of the perpendicular cliffs of the south wall is ,glacier ,point1 the finest lookout point in the valley1 and a short distance back from the rim are the symmetrical curves of ,sentinel ,dome4 ,yosemite ,valley is formed by the confluence of two great canyons--,tenaya ,canyon from the northeast and the upper ,merced ,canyon from the southeast4 ,between them originates a great backbone ridge which extends many miles to the northeast and exhibits many examples of dome structure and glacial sculpture4 ,lowest of its promontories is the roughly hewn ,grizzly ,peak1 which is flanked on the east by the well rounded summits and smoothly planed sides of ,mount ,broderick and ,liberty ,cap4 ,then1 standing in massive isolation #ejjj feet above the valley and #bjjj feet above its immediate base is ,half ,dome4 ,further to the northeast along the ridge are the two ,quarter ,domes1 the ,pinnacles and ,clouds ,rest1 the highest summit in the immediate vicinity of ,yosemite4 ,tenaya ,canyon1 a great glaciated gorge countersunk thousands of feet into the granite1 is practically impassable4 ,the main canyon of the ,merced1 however1 as it comes from the east1 widens to form the ,little ,yosemite ,valley4 ,with its level meadows and sheer granite walls flanked by perfectly formed domes1 it is marvelously like ,yosemite but smaller4 ,further eastward is the ,high ,sierra4 ,,the ,,waterfalls ,there are five great waterfalls in ,yosemite and a number of lesser ones which would be world-famous were it not for the comparison4 ,during the flood waters of spring they are at the height of their beauty1 amplifying the living landscape by their many columns and booming power4 ,later1 as the snow fountains of the high places are gradually depleted1 they take on a more filmy gracefulness but are lacking in exuberant impressiveness4 ,three of the five falls1 the ,bridalveil1 ,yosemite and ,illilouette1 leap from hanging valleys into the main canyon4 ,all of the minor falls are of the same type4 ,vernal and ,nevada ,falls1 on the other hand1 are formed by the entire ,merced ,river pouring over great steps in the mighty box canyon at the east end of the valley4 ,first seen and most graceful is the ,bridalveil1 dropping daintily #fbj feet at the right portal of the great valley gate4 ,well may we wonder how this charming fall with its exquisite rainbows came to be called ,pohono or spirit of the evil wind by the ,indians4 ,most famous of all1 the highest fall in ,yosemite and in all the world1 is the ,yosemite4 ,its first sheer plunge of #adcj feet would set it apart as the greatest of its kind1 but by a series of six quick jumps it descends another #hjj feet to the brink of the final precipice1 over which it leaps gracefully #cbj feet to the valley floor4 ,seen from below1 the #bfjj-;foot drop often appears as one fall though in reality the ,upper ,fall is fully one third of a mile back of the lower4 ,in winter a great ice cone1 sometimes #ejj feet high1 forms beneath this ,upper ,fall1 and its collapse causes riotous ice-floods in early spring4 ,choolook1 which in ,yosemite dialect meant simply the fall1 has a most changing personality4 ,in late summer and autumn he loses much of his springtime power and obeys every whim of the ever-changing winds4 ,but the most delightful of all his moods may be seen during the time of the full moon when the foot of the ,lower ,fall is veiled by the delicate iridescence of lunar rainbows4 ,from the western edge of ,panorama ,cliff the lace-like ,illilouette ,falls disappears into its box canyon east of ,glacier ,point4 ,the filmy character of its #cgj-;foot foam-curtain is almost never appreciated because of the lack of a proper view-point4 ,the old ,indian name ,too-tool-a-we-ack sought to reproduce the sound of gurgling and falling water4 ,vernal and ,nevada pour over the rims of two successive glacial amphitheatres in the main canyon of the ,merced4 ,both carry a great volume of water and are much less variable than the mural falls4 ,vernal1 dropping #cag feet in a wide and unbroken sheet1 has often been pronounced the symmetrically perfect of all falls4 ,its foot is always bathed in blowing mists which give rise to most exquisite circular rainbows4 ,referring to the spray1 the ,yosemites called the fall ,yan-o-pah or little water cloud4 ,nevada1 widely tossing out its spray-rockets1 gives a vast impression of power which is probably nowhere equaled except in the ,grand ,canyon of the ,tuolumne4 ,in its descent of #eid feet it strikes a projecting ledge1 which caused the ,indians to name it ,yo-wy-we or twisting rock4 ,there is yet another great fall in the ,yosemite region1 but concerning it little is known4 ,it is so inaccessible in the mighty ,tenaya ,canyon that it is even nameless1 and no one has ever reached its base4 ,seen from afar pouring over a rounded precipice in the canyon bottom it appears to be between #fjj and #ajjj feet in height4 ,the minor falls are very beautiful in early spring but all are ephemeral1 blooming delightfully with the melting of snows1 but dying in summer4 ,largest and best known are the ,cascade ,falls1 which drop #eid feet over the north wall of the lower ,merced ,canyon and form one of the chief objects of interest in the ride from ,el ,portal to ,yosemite4 ,ribbon ,fall1 highest of all1 descends delicately in one #afab-;foot leap into a recess just west of ,el ,capitan4 ,from the rugged south wall ,widow's ,tears pours #aagj feet to the rock talus4 ,just west of ,sentinel ,rock is a series of picturesque cascades which1 in spring1 are dignified by the name of ,sentinel ,falls4 ,royal ,arch ,fall is one of the most beautiful but most ephemeral of the small falls4 ,during sudden rainstorms or usually rapid thaws1 supplementary falls pour into the valley over many of its ramparts4 ,john ,muir describes the storm of #ahga in which fifty-six such cataracts appeared in the upper end of ,yosemite ,valley4 ,,yosemite ,,village ,on the banks of the ,merced where once stood ,haw-kaw-koo-e-tah1 the home of the ,yo-ham-i-te tribe1 is ,yosemite ,village4 ,the accompanying map1 drawn ,may #a1 #aibj1 indicates all places of public interest1 but on account of contemplated building activities several changes may be expected within the next few seasons4 ,yosemite has recently been granted a second-class postoffice with branches at ,camp ,curry and ,yosemite ,lodge and with free delivery service to camps on the valley floor4 ,at the ,u4,s4 ,national ,park ,service ,administrative ,building are the offices of the ,park ,superintendent1 ,chief ,ranger and other executive officers4 ,in front of the building is a free information bureau with a park ranger in charge4 ,government maps and bulletins may here be obtained free or at a very nominal cost4 ,adjacent is a motorists' information bureau maintained by the ,california ,state ,automobile ,association4 ,at the left entrance is the telegraph and telephone office maintained by the government4 ,the ,yosemite ,museum1 which contains many excellent exhibits of the flora and fauna of the region is temporarily housed in this building4 ,hotel accommodations in ,yosemite ,valley are limited to one hotel and two large hotel-camps4 ,the ,sentinel ,hotel in ,yosemite ,village1 though offering good service and a splendid cuisine1 has been outgrown and will soon be superseded by a very much larger and more modern building4 ,camp ,curry1 a large hotel-camp about one mile east of the village on the road to ,happy ,isles1 is delightfully situated beneath ,glacier ,point1 an ideal spot from which to view the famous ,fire ,fall1 a beautiful cataract of fire which is nightly pushed from the cliff #cjjj feet above4 ,the camp has a wide reputation for its democratic atmosphere4 ,park ,company4 ,at the rim of the valley is ,glacier ,point ,hotel with every modern convenience1 and an unsurpassable view of ,yosemite and the ,high ,sierra4 ,lodges are maintained at the ,mariposa ,grove of ,big ,trees and at ,lake ,tenaya and ,merced ,lake in the ,high ,sierra4 ,the general store is adequately stocked to supply the tourist and camper with all his needs--supplies1 clothing1 sporting goods1 drugs1 etc4 ,the ,housekeeping ,camps ,department supplies all kinds of camping or outing equipment at very reasonable rates4 ,opposite the store is the bakery and creamery1 and the meat market4 ,during the season of #aibj the general garage will be moved from its location near ,yosemite ,lodge to a point just southeast of the new ,rangers' ,club ,house4 ,a large free storage garage is maintained by ,camp ,curry4 ,gasoline and oils may be obtained at several service stations on the floor of the valley and at a few outposts on the park roads4 ,the ,government ,pavilion1 on the banks of the ,merced near the center of the village1 is a social center for dances1 lectures1 moving pictures1 etc4 ,there is also an excellent entertainment and dance hall at ,camp ,curry4 ,religious services are held in ,yosemite ,chapel which faces the postoffice4 ,in the village are four studios1 two of them doing photographic work exclusively1 and the other two specializing in oils and water-colors4 ,studios are also maintained at ,yosemite ,lodge and ,camp ,curry4 ,there are two large swimming tanks1 one at ,yosemite ,lodge and one at ,camp ,curry4 ,both are open to the general public4 ,between the village and ,camp ,curry is the picturesque ,le ,conte ,memorial ,lodge1 which is sustained by the ,sierra ,club4 ,the ,yosemite ,library is housed here and hundreds of photographs1 flower specimens1 maps1 etc41 make the building a favorite of the thousands of visitors4 ,each year the ,extension ,division of the ,university of ,california arranges a series of ,le ,conte ,memorial ,lectures1 which are here delivered4 ,they are exceptionally interesting and all well attended1 for in them the most eminent scientific authorities interpret the natural history1 folklore1 geology and other subjects exemplified by the ,yosemite region4 ,north of the ,merced and about a third of a mile from the center of the village is the schoolhouse and a group of other government buildings4 ,one of these is the menagerie and contains several wild animals captured in the region4 ,the chief exhibits are a pair of ,california mountain lions1 and a number of bear4 ,in this vicinity is also the quaint old ,yosemite ,cemetery1 where rest many of the pioneers of the early days4 ,near ,yosemite ,lodge is the ,yosemite ,hospital with a competent physician and surgeon in charge4 ,during part of the season a dentist is also in attendance4 ,about twenty camp grounds have been prepared for the free use of the public by the ,park ,service4 ,water is piped to these localities and a sanitation system provided for4 ,applications for camp sites should be made at the ,national ,park ,service office in ,yosemite ,village4 ,those without outfits1 who desire to establish camps1 may arrange at the ,housekeeping ,camps ,department of the ,yosemite ,national ,park ,company 7at ,camp #ag1 a quarter mile east of ,sentinel ,bridge and north of the river7 to rent all necessary equipment4 ,this will be delivered and set up ready for occupancy4 ,it is advisable to arrange in advance for the outfit desired4 ,an auto-bus service 7fare #aj;c and #be;c7 to all points on the valley floor provides a quick and convenient means of transportation4 ,all main roads are paralleled by trails for the use of pedestrians4 ,information as to the hiring of horses and automobiles1 arrangements for camping tours1 and about many other items of general interest1 is contained in the ,circular of ,general ,information regarding ,yosemite ,national ,park1 which may be obtained free at any of the government information bureaus4 ,,yosemite ,,roads ,the roads of ,yosemite have just passed their initial stage of development4 ,most of the #ach miles of road in the park were built for old-time stage coaches and for horse travel4 ,with the advent of the motor has come a second period--that of reconstruction and improvement4 ,the highway from ,el ,portal to ,yosemite and the roads on the floor of the valley illustrate the type of present-day construction2 but it must be remembered with indulgence that such roads are just beginning to be1 and that most of the park routes1 although not at all bad1 are yet mountain roads4 ,let us assume that the motorist is now in ,yosemite4 ,besides the routes to the low country1 the following scenic trips may be taken within the park3 #a4 ,a ,tour of the ,valley4 #b4 ,el ,portal and return4 #c4 ,glacier ,point4 #d4 ,the ,mariposa ,big ,trees4 #e4 ,tuolumne ,big ,trees4 #f4 ,hetch ,hetchy4 #g4 ,lake ,tenaya and the ,high miles--#a-a_/d hours by stage7 ,most charming because of the climax of ever-increasing scenic beauty and grandeur1 is the fifteen-mile ride from ,el ,portal up the gorge of the ,merced to ,yosemite4 ,it is rather to be regretted that modern auto-busses hurry us over the new highway in less than an hour and a half1 giving us scarce time to appreciate the majesty and beauty of the ever-changing panorama4 ,leaving ,el ,portal1 the road parallels the north bank of the ,merced1 passing beneath gnarled oaks and silver-gray digger pines4 ,in the high water of early spring1 ,indian ,creek1 across the canyon1 descends over the picturesque ,chinquapin ,falls4 ,entering the gateway of ,yosemite ,national ,park1 we follow up the riotous ,merced ,river1 noting here and there a hardy yellow pine or an incense cedar venturing down to the canyon bottom4 ,about two miles inside the park is ,avalanche ,falls across the river4 ,the trail bridge below is the crossing of the ,sunset ,trail1 which ascends past the foot of the fall and climbs #bejj feet to the ,wawona ,road4 ,a short distance up the canyon the road passes beneath ,arch ,rock1 a natural tunnel formed by huge blocks of granite4 ,just beyond1 ,grouse ,creek descends the south canyon wall by a series of cascades4 ,we have now entered the true mountain forest1 and ride beneath yellow pines1 incense cedars1 ,douglas firs and now and then a true fir4 ,elephant ,rock towers above and to the right4 ,just below it is ,battleship ,harbor1 a placid stretch of the ,merced in which fancied granite dreadnaughts ride anchor4 ,at the left the old ,coulterville ,road steeply descends the canyon wall and joins the main highway4 ,this first road to ,yosemite was opened in #ahgd and was for years the main stage route from ,merced4 ,for the benefit of those who require entertainment the chauffeur often points out the image of a white ,persian cat on the rock wall to the left4 ,a short distance beyond and on the same side of the road are ,wildcat ,falls4 ,crossing two small bridges we obtain the best view of ,elephant ,rock down the canyon4 ,at the left are the ,cascade ,falls1 during the flood waters of early spring one of ,yosemite's most beautiful cataracts4 ,the top of the cascade is #eid feet above the road4 ,about a half mile further is ,pulpit ,rock1 on the south side of the river4 ,it is best viewed by driving beyond and then looking back down the canyon4 ,below the road and at the right is the government power plant1 where the water from the ,merced drives two thousand-kilowatt electric generators4 ,the intake and dam are passed further up the canyon4 ,three thousand feet above1 the ephemeral ,widow's ,tears ,fall drops #aagj feet from the rugged ramparts of the south wall4 ,another mile takes us past the site of the old ,indian village ,ah-wah-ma to ,pohono ,bridge4 ,from this point two roads ascend the valley1 one on either side of the river4 ,the more picturesque ,pohono ,road runs up the south side of the canyon4 ,this is described in ,road ,trip ,i-,a4 ,the ,el ,capitan ,road1 following up the north side of the valley will first be traced4 ,a short distance from the bridge we are treated to a most impressive view of the ,gates of the ,valley4 ,at the left the sheer #ccjj-;foot precipice of ,el ,capitan dominates the entire landscape4 ,its majesty is matched by the beauty of the ,bridalveil ,fall and ,cathedral ,rocks opposite4 ,between them is ,nature's threshold1 the brilliantly verdant ,bridalveil ,meadows1 dotted with dark green pines and oaks4 ,beyond1 ,half ,dome is partly hidden by the projecting cliff of ,glacier ,point at the right4 ,the summit of the lofty bare granite ridge in the distance is ,clouds ,rest1 the highest point on the ,yosemite walls4 ,if the winter snows be still melting above the rim we will see at the left the ,ribbon ,fall dropping delicately over its #afab-;foot precipice into a recess just west of ,el ,capitan4 ,its ,indian name was ,lung-oo-too-koo-ya1 or pigeon fall4 ,near its base the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road branches to the left and ascends thru the piles of shattered granite talus of the north wall4 ,at this point was the ,indian village1 ,hep-hep-oo-ma4 ,the road to the right leads past the ,el ,capitan ,checking ,station and across ,el ,capitan ,bridge to the ,bridalveil ,road 7,road ,trip ,i-,a7 south of the river4 ,continuing up the north road we pass thru ,el ,capitan ,meadows1 where were the ,indian villages of ,aw-o-koi-e1 ,he-le-jah1 ,ha-eng-ah and ,yu-a-chah4 ,as we skirt the base of the almost vertical wall1 the stage driver will generally point out more or less interesting images4 ,chief among these is ,tote-ack-ah-noo-la1 the ,rock ,chief of the ,indians1 whose title was translated into ,spanish to make the present name4 ,in a shallow niche #aahi feet above the road stands a hardy ,jeffrey pine #hb4d feet in height and two feet in diameter4 ,across the river are the massive ,cathedral ,rocks and the delicately pinnacled ,cathedral ,spires4 ,further up the canyon the massively sculptured pyramids1 the ,three ,brothers1 rise abruptly to the north4 ,opposite them the road to the ,bear ,pits turns into the woods4 ,turning northeast1 our road passes ,rocky ,point at their base4 ,this is ,we-ck1 the place where ,chief ,tenaya's three sons were captured in #ahea4 ,one mile beyond is ,yosemite ,lodge1 one of the two large hotel-camps of the valley4 ,the main buildings occupy the site of ,koom-i-ne1 the largest and most important of the old ,indian villages4 ,just northward the ,yosemite ,fall makes its triple plunge of #bfjj feet1 the highest waterfall in the world4 ,the upper fall drops #adcj feet sheer4 ,crossing the azalia-bordered ,yosemite ,creek1 the road skirts a wide meadow and turns sharply across the valley4 ,to the left is a magnificent panorama of the ,royal ,arches1 ,north ,dome1 ,washington ,column and the precipice of ,glacier ,point4 ,at the right the great obelisk of ,the ,sentinel rises from the south wall4 ,crossing ,sentinel ,bridge to ,yosemite ,village we halt at the ,sentinel ,hotel which1 with the cottages opposite1 occupies the site of the old ,indian village ,haw-kaw-koo-e-tah1 the home of the band called ,yo-ham-i-te1 for whom the valley was named4 ,a short distance beyond is the office of the ,u4,s4 ,national ,park ,service1 where all campers should stop and register4 ,we continue up the canyon1 now paralleling the south river margin thru a beautiful pine1 fir and cedar forest4 ,thru the trees we now and then catch a glimpse of the ,quarter ,domes beyond the dominating ,half ,dome1 and finally the summit of ,clouds ,rest4 ,three-quarters of a mile from the village is the picturesque ,sierra ,club ,lodge at the right of the road4 ,a short distance further is ,camp ,curry1 delightfully situated among the giant pines and cedars at the base of the towering cliff of ,glacier ,point4 ,at this spot was the large ,indian village of ,too-yu-yu-yu1 and a short distance to the northeast in the meadow was ,too-lah-kah-mah4 ,this famous hostelry1 ,camp ,curry1 is the final destination of all stages4 ,the road continues up the canyon to ,happy ,isles4 ,,road ,,trip ,i-,a ,,pohono ,,bridge ,,to ,,yosemite via ,,bridalveil ,,road 7#e miles--#bj minutes by stage7 ,the ,bridalveil ,road1 ascending the south side of the valley1 is scenically superior to the north1 or ,el ,capitan ,road4 ,crossing ,pohono ,bridge to the south side of the ,merced the road immediately enters a dense and beautiful forest4 ,a short distance takes us to ,fern ,spring1 justly famous for the purity of its ice cold water4 ,one-half mile beyond we suddenly emerge at ,bridalveil ,meadows1 obtaining a most charming view of the ,gates of the ,valley4 ,at the right1 ,bridalveil ,fall leaps #fcj feet from its hanging valley1 the one side of which is formed by the massively sculptured ,cathedral ,rocks1 and the other by a solid granite ridge terminating at ,leaning ,tower1 another eminence of the turreted south wall4 ,on the opposite side of the canyon rises the sheer face of ,el ,capitan4 ,in the recess at its west the evanescent streamer of ,ribbon ,fall descends in a lace-like film4 ,at the edge of the meadow about #ajj feet north of the road a dense grove of oaks and pines shelters the graves of two pioneers1 ,rose and ,shurban1 who were massacred here by the ,indians in ,may1 #aheb4 ,near the river was once the ,indian village of ,sap-pah-sam-mah4 ,the road now passes near ,bridalveil ,fall1 charming glimpses of which are now and then revealed4 ,a subsidiary road turns to the right and leads to the foot of the falls4 ,this short side trip should be taken by all visitors4 ,just below a very large rock at the east margin of the stream is the site of the ancient village of ,lem-me-hitch-ke4 ,in view of this fact1 our stories of the ,indians' great fear of ,pohono1 the spirit of the evil wind1 may be somewhat overdrawn4 ,just below the imposing buttress of the lowermost of the ,cathedral ,rocks is ,el ,capitan ,bridge1 and near it ,lo-to-ya 7,flower7 ,spring4 ,north of the river is ,el ,capitan ,checking ,station and the terminus of the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road 7,road ,trip ,,iv74 ,east of ,cathedral ,rocks we are treated to a sudden view of the two marvelously slender ,cathedral ,spires1 each rising #ejj feet from its base and appearing to tower even above the ,yosemite rim4 ,directly opposite across ,el ,capitan ,meadows is a most comprehensive view of the mighty wall of ,tote-ack-ah-noo-la1 the ,rock ,chief of the ,indians1 whose title was merely translated into ,spanish to make the present name4 ,chauffeurs often point out the likeness of the chief and other more or less imaginary mural images4 ,in a shallow niche #aahi feet above the road stands a hardy ,jeffrey pine #hb4d feet high and two feet in diameter4 ,in driving beneath the oaks1 alders1 pines and firs we enjoy ever-changing vistas across the placid river4 ,three ,brothers1 massively piled promontories of the north wall1 are least harshly seen from this road4 ,directly ahead rises the watchtower of ,sentinel ,rock4 ,at its west flank the transitory ,sentinel ,fall descends in a series of cascades during the spring thaws4 ,below ,sentinel ,rock we pass the site of ,galen ,clark's cabin1 of old ,camp ,awahnee1 and of the more ancient ,indian village of ,loi'-ah4 ,about one and a quarter miles further is ,yosemite ,village4 ,all campers should register at the ,national ,park ,service headquarters4 ,,road ,,trip ,,ii ,a ,,tour ,,of ,,the ,,floor ,,of ,,the ,,valley 7#i miles--#b hours ride--#a_/b to #a day walk7 ,every ,yosemite visitor should spend at least one day within the valley itself before beginning the more strenuous trail trips4 ,there is so much to be seen from the valley floor that weeks might be spent there were it not for the call of the ,high ,country beyond the walls4 ,the following itinerary includes a visit to most places of interest in the upper 7east7 end of the valley3 ,sentinel ,bridge1 ,indian ,village1 ,royal ,arches1 ,washington ,column1 ,indian ,cave1 ,mirror ,lake1 ,half ,dome1 ,mineral ,springs1 ,tenaya ,bridge1 ,happy ,isles1 ,camp ,curry and ,le ,conte ,memorial ,lodge1 in the order mentioned4 ,road ,trips ,i and ,,vi describe the region west of the village4 ,the following excursion may be made by motor in two or three hours4 ,hikers will find it a moderately long half-day tramp or a leisurely one-day ramble4 ,an early start should be made in order to see the sunrise at ,mirror ,lake4 ,it is well to ascertain the hour beforehand1 for this varies with the season of the year4 ,from ,yosemite ,village we cross ,sentinel ,bridge and follow the poplar-bordered road across the meadow4 ,straight ahead is ,yosemite ,fall and the ,lost ,arrow1 and at our right a most comprehensive view of ,north ,dome1 the ,royal ,arches1 ,washington ,column1 ,half ,dome and ,glacier ,point4 ,at the ,grizzly ,hotel site the ,el ,capitan ,road 7,road ,trip ,,vi7 branches westward1 while our route turns up the canyon4 ,the distant buildings to the left of the road are the ,government barns1 shops and warehouses4 ,in this group is the menagerie which will well repay a subsequent visit4 ,nearer is the picturesque old cemetery where many pioneers of the region lie at rest4 ,a little farther eastward on the largest open level area in ,yosemite is the site of the important old village of ,ah-wah-ne1 from which the valley took its ,indian name4 ,continuing along the ,royal ,arch ,road we soon pass the new ,rangers' ,club ,house4 ,just beyond1 a cross road to the right leads to the garage4 ,to the northward1 high overhead1 are the silhouettes of the ,castle ,cliffs1 and at their east the deep cleft of ,indian ,canyon which1 to the ,yosemite tribe1 was ,le ,hammo because of the arrowwood which grew there4 ,along the precipitous cliffs of the east wall ran their main trail into ,yosemite from the north4 ,from the valley floor at the base of a cliff just west of the ,royal ,arches they first climbed a large oak and then made their way along narrow ledges toward the northwest4 ,it was at this oak that old ,chief ,tenaya was captured in #ahea by ,lieutenant ,chandler and the scout ,sandino4 ,at the mouth of ,indian ,canyon is ,yo-watch-ke1 the only ,indian village in the valley which is still occupied4 ,during the ,july celebrations it is picturesquely alive but at other times the few dirty o-chums are almost repulsive4 ,this area on the alluvial fan of ,indian ,creek is the warmest spot in the valley and botanists will here find many plants typical of the lower altitudes4 ,a short distance further we pass ,camp #ag at the right of the road4 ,about a quarter of a mile beyond and on the opposite side is ,camp #bj4 ,at a road junction is a small settlement called ,kenneyville1 which occupies the site of the former ,indian ,camp of ,wis-kah-lah4 ,here the ,le ,conte ,road turns south1 leading to ,camps #ae and #g1 and across ,stoneman ,bridge to ,camp ,curry on the ,happy ,isles ,road4 ,doubling back to the westward is ,sequoia ,lane1 a road leading to ,camps #f and #g1 and to ,yosemite ,village1 one mile distant4 ,we continue eastward1 passing ,camp #h1 which is above the road and just at the west end of the ,royal ,arches4 ,during the spring thaw the beautiful but ephemeral ,royal ,arch ,fall descends over a cliff at the left4 ,its ,indian name1 ,scho-ko-ya1 meant basket fall4 ,in the next half mile our road is flanked by the overhanging cornices of the colossal arches4 ,they must be viewed from afar if we would realize how aptly they were called by the ,yosemites ,scho-ko-ni1 which means the movable shade to a cradle basket4 ,at the left of the road and directly beneath the arches is ,camp #i4 ,as we continue along the road1 breaks in the forest reveal intermittent views of ,washington ,column towering above to the left1 and of the great face of ,half ,dome dominating all the east4 ,a short subsidiary road to the left now leads to ,indian ,cave immediately under ,washington ,column4 ,the ,yosemites named this retreat ,hol-low1 but sometimes called it ,lah-koo-hah1 which means ,come out6 ,it is a low1 broad1 deep recess under a huge rock and is said to have been occupied as a winter shelter2 also when the ,yosemites were attacked and almost exterminated by the ,mono ,lake ,piutes4 ,the overhanging rock is black with the smoke of ages1 and far back in the cave large quantities of acorn shells have been found4 ,returning the short distance to the main road1 we again turn eastward1 soon passing a group of excellent mineral springs at the right4 ,the highway now bears gradually to the north into the mouth of ,tenaya ,canyon and in one-half mile ends in a loop at the west margin of ,mirror ,lake4 ,the relative darkness in this deep canyon and the absence of wind during the early morning hours insures a perfect reflection for almost every morning of the vacation season4 ,most perfect are the reflections of ,mount ,watkins 7the ,wei-yow or ,juniper ,mountain of the ,yosemites7 guarding the entrance to the forbidden gorge of ,tenaya4 ,unfortunately the delta of ,tenaya ,creek has greatly encroached upon the mirror and has reduced it to but a remnant of the beautiful lake which the ,indians called ,ah-wei-yo1 or quiet water4 ,from the end of the road the ,tenaya ,lake and ,north ,dome ,trail 7,trail ,trips #d and #f7 continue around the western shore of the lake and up the canyon4 ,after the appearance of the sun over the shoulder of ,half ,dome1 we retrace the last half mile of our route1 turning aside for a short visit to the mineral springs4 ,a little distance further the main road forks and we take the left-hand branch which crosses ,tenaya ,bridge4 ,a detour to the westward now takes us around and over a portion of the lateral moraine left at the junction of the ancient ,tenaya and ,merced glaciers4 ,near this point was ,hoo-ke-hahtch-ke1 an ,indian village inhabited up to about #ahig4 ,a road which branches to the right offers a short-cut to ,camp ,curry1 about three-quarters of a mile distant4 ,it passes ,camps #aa and #ad1 and the site of the ,lick ,house1 one of the inns of early days4 ,the main road1 however1 bears to the left and parallels the beautiful banks of the ,merced4 ,less than a mile takes us to the ,happy ,isles ,bridge4 ,here the main trail to ,vernal and ,nevada ,falls1 ,glacier ,point1 ,half ,dome1 ,clouds ,rest1 ,merced ,lake1 etc4 7see ,trail ,trips71 turns south and ascends the ,merced ,canyon4 ,at the right of the bridge is a ,u4,s4 ,weather ,bureau observation station4 ,on the west side of the stream is the old power plant and from it starts the footpath to ,happy ,isles4 ,the short side trip from island to island should not be missed4 ,especially are these charming garden spots noted for the beauty of their flowering dogwoods1 maples and alders4 ,the round trip to ,sierra ,point 7,trail ,trip #ab7 may easily be accomplished from this point in one hour4 ,a refreshment stand is maintained in the vicinity4 ,to escape the dust of the road one may follow the picturesque ,happy ,isles ,trail from its beginning near the power house to ,camp ,curry1 one mile westward4 ,our road now bears to the northwest and rounds the imposing buttress of ,glacier ,point4 ,one-half mile takes us to a spring at the left of the road which once supplied the large ,indian village of ,um-ma-taw4 ,a short distance beyond1 our route is joined by the short-cut road from ,mirror ,lake4 ,near this road is a cabin often pointed out as having belonged to ,john ,muir4 ,it was really built and used by ,james ,c4 ,lamon1 a pioneer and the first permanent resident of the valley4 ,muir's cabin has long since disappeared and its only existing photograph is in the possession of ,dr4 ,wm4 ,f4 ,bad4 ,the orchard at the right occupies the site of ,too-lah-kah-mah1 another vanished community of the ,yosemite tribe4 ,extending for a considerable distance along the road are the tents and bungalows of ,camp ,curry4 ,if we have time to stop1 we may be refreshed by a swim in the huge open-air swimming pool1 by cooling drinks at the soda fountain or by a rest beneath the great pines and cedars4 ,from the camp center a road to the north leads across the ,stoneman ,bridge to ,kenneyville4 ,at the right of the road is the site of the old ,stoneman ,hotel1 which was built and maintained in the early days by the ,state of ,california1 but which burned down in #ahif4 ,close to the bridge1 on the banks of the ,merced1 was once the large ,indian village of ,too-yu-yu-yu4 ,west of the ,camp ,curry bungalows we pass ,camp #af1 between the road and the river4 ,near this point the ,ledge ,trail turns to the south and mounts the talus slopes above ,camp ,curry4 ,a short distance beyond is the new ,le ,conte ,memorial ,lodge picturesquely set among the pines and incense cedars where once was the ,indian village of ,ho-low1 and where the old schoolhouse stood until #aiaa4 ,the lodge is an ideal place to spend the remainder of the afternoon amongst photographs1 flowers1 books and maps1 and in a cool and absolutely restful atmosphere4 ,to the right of the road1 where the river makes a big detour to the north1 is ,camp #ai4 ,one should note the remarkably perfect reflections in the river below the rock wall parapet during the remaining half-mile walk to ,yosemite ,village4 ,,road ,,trip ,,iii ,,yosemite ,,to ,,glacier ,,point via ,,chinquapin ,,road 7#bh miles--#d to #e hours by auto7 ,a trip to ,glacier ,point should be part of everyone's ,yosemite itinerary4 ,many motorists prefer to make the excursion by road instead of by trail4 ,the round trip from ,yosemite can be made by machine in one day1 but it is better to reserve accommodations in advance at the ,glacier ,point ,hotel and remain there over night to view the sunrise over the ,high ,sierra4 ,another excellent plan is to send one's machine around by road while one walks or rides to ,glacier ,point via the ,vernal and ,nevada ,falls ,trail 7,trail ,trip #a71 returning to the valley via ,chinquapin ,road4 ,the description of the first #ad4e miles of this trip1 which follows the ,wawona ,road as far as ,chinquapin1 will be of interest to those leaving ,yosemite by that route4 ,from ,yosemite ,village we follow the ,bridalveil ,road 7,road ,trip ,,vi-,a7 down the valley four and a half miles to the ,bridalveil ,checking ,station1 where the ,wawona ,road turns to the left4 ,here all motorists must register4 ,for safety the park regulations permit the ascent on even hours only1 and at a speed of not more than twelve miles per hour4 ,we now climb steadily beneath a dense forest of pines1 fir1 incense cedar1 oak and laurel1 and at one and a half miles halt at ,artist ,point 7,alt4 #dgja1 #gej feet above the valley floor74 ,the view of the ,gates of the ,valley to the east is claimed to be one of the most perfect of all ,yosemite landscapes4 ,gradually climbing another #fij feet we finally halt at ,inspiration ,point 7,alt4 #ecia74 ,the view of ,yosemite is similar to that from ,artist ,point1 but with the depths and distances more impressively accentuated4 ,across the canyon is ,fireplace ,bluff4 ,a view-finder beside the road indicates each point of interest4 ,all machines should be registered at the ,government ,checking ,station4 ,telephone communication and water are here available4 ,about half a mile beyond ,inspiration ,point is ,fort ,monroe 7,alt4 #eedj71 an old-time stage relay station4 ,this is a fair campsite for auto parties4 ,a good spring will be found near the ,pohono ,trail junction4 ,the visit to the wild-flower gardens and many fine lookout points of the ,pohono ,trail 7,trail ,trip #ah7 is an especially fine one-day walking trip from this point4 ,our road now leads thru most magnificent pine forests1 which open now and then to give us short glimpses of the canyon of the ,merced1 thousands of feet below4 ,about two miles from ,fort ,monroe the ,hennessy ,trail 7,trail ,trip #be7 branches to the right and descends to ,el ,portal1 ten miles distant4 ,grouse ,creek ,crossing1 a half mile further1 is a good auto camp4 ,fishing is fair downstream4 ,another two miles takes us to ,avalanche ,creek4 ,there are here no camping places and the stream contains no trout4 ,caution3 ,the worst turn on the road is about #bjj yards beyond the crossing4 ,one mile beyond ,avalanche ,creek the ,sunset ,trail 7,trail ,trip #bd7 leaves the road at the right1 descending to the ,mid-winter ,ranger ,station near ,arch ,rock on the ,el ,portal ,road4 ,one mile further is ,chinquapin1 an old stage relay station at the junction of the ,glacier ,point and ,wawona ,roads4 ,there is here a ranger station and during the summer gas and oil can be obtained4 ,in the vicinity are many good camp sites4 ,an excellent spring will be found #bjj yards north of the ranger cabin4 ,fishing is fair in ,indian ,creek about a quarter of a mile southward2 best fishing is downstream4 ,many deer are generally to be seen in the region4 ,chinquapin is especially noted for its wonderful sunsets4 ,before leaving1 all machines should take water4 ,the main road continues southward to ,wawona and the ,mariposa ,grove of ,big ,trees and thence to ,merced1 ,madera and ,fresno4 ,our route turns eastward and climbs abruptly #acjj feet in the next three miles to the head of the canyon of ,indian ,creek4 ,this long1 hard grade takes us to the #gejj-;foot level1 where we are at last on the gently sloping plateau above the valley walls4 ,the following eleven miles is a delightful succession of mountain meadows and forests of red fir1 lodgepole pine and other sub-alpine species4 ,numbers of deer can almost always be seen from the road1 especially early in the morning4 ,peregoy ,meadow1 about five miles from ,chinquapin1 was famous in the early days for its wayside inn on the ,yosemite ,trail from ,clarke's 7now ,wawona74 ,the old buildings have long since disappeared1 but the trail1 now called the ,alder ,creek ,trail 7,trail ,trip #ai71 is still used4 ,from ,peregoy ,meadow to ,glacier ,point are many fine camp sites4 ,about one mile eastward is ,bridalveil ,creek ,crossing4 ,fishing is good upstream1 and fair about one mile downstream1 but generally poor near the road4 ,at a trail junction about one and a half miles further1 the ,ostrander ,lake and ,buck ,camp ,trail 7,trail ,trips #bj and #ba7 turns southward 7right74 ,here one may park his machine and walk to ,ostrander ,lake via ,trail ,trip #bj and return1 a fifteen mile one-day round trip4 ,the lake offers some of the best fishing in this section of the park4 ,swinging gradually to the northeast the road passes to the east of ,ostrander ,rocks4 ,a trail to the right leads to ,mono ,meadow and the basin of the ,illilouette4 ,three miles further at ,pothole ,meadows the ,peregoy ,meadow ,trail 7,trail ,trip #ai7 leaves the road at the left4 ,a short distance beyond and at the same side of the road is the ,pohono ,trail turn-off 7,trail ,trip #ag74 ,a half mile further1 just as the road starts its final descent to ,glacier ,point1 is a trail to the left leading to ,sentinel ,dome4 ,the summit is but a few minutes distant and from it is revealed a vast panorama of the ,high ,sierra4 ,a gradual descent in the final one and a half miles takes us past several lookout points to the road termination at ,glacier ,point ,hotel4 ,excellent accommodations are here obtainable4 ,the overhanging rock and ,glacier ,point are #bjj yards northward4 7,for trips from ,glacier ,point see ,trail ,trips #a1 #b1 and #af to #bc47 ,,road ,,trip ,,iv ,,yosemite ,,to ,,tenaya ,,lake1 ,,tuolumne ,,meadows ,,and ,,mono ,,lake via ,,big ,,oak ,,flat ,,and ,,tioga ,,roads 7,lake ,tenaya #eg4g miles4 ,tuolumne ,meadows #fe4b miles4 ,mono ,lake #hh4b miles7 ,most charmingly scenic of all trans-,sierran routes is the historic old ,tioga ,road4 ,built by ,chinese labor in #ahha to transport ore from the ,tioga ,mine 7near ,mono ,lake7 across the ,sierra to the ,san ,joaquin ,valley1 it soon fell into decay when the venture was abandoned4 ,in #aiae the road was purchased by a group of public-spirited citizens and presented to the government4 ,since being well repaired it makes ,yosemite accessible from the east and opens up the wonderfully fine camping country of the ,high ,sierra to the automobile tourist4 ,hundreds of motorists take this exceptionally scenic short-cut to ,lake ,tahoe4 ,in normal years the road opens ,july #aeth and closes ,september #cjth4 ,detailed information may be obtained from the ,circular of ,general ,information regarding ,yosemite ,national ,park1 or at the ,motorists' ,information ,bureau in ,yosemite ,village4 ,the first twenty-three miles of the following trip describes the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road as far as ,carl ,inn1 and should be of use to auto parties leaving the park by that route4 ,from ,yosemite we may follow either the ,bridalveil or the ,el ,capitan ,road westward4 ,at ,el ,capitan ,bridge1 four miles west of the village1 the ,big ,oak ,flat road turns abruptly northward4 ,all machines should be registered at the nearby checking station4 ,for safety1 the park regulations permit the ascent on even hours only and at a speed of not more than twelve miles per hour4 ,gradually mounting the talus slope of the rough canyon side1 we emerge #abjj feet above the valley floor at ,new ,inspiration ,point from which is our last comprehensive view of the ,gates of the ,valley4 ,the outlook1 although scenically not as perfect as that from the ,wawona ,road1 is nevertheless quite attractive1 for the depths below when viewed from this point seem almost always to be permeated by a transparent blue haze4 ,near the top of the steady four-mile climb is ,gentry ,checking ,station1 where motorists should again register4 ,this is a possible camp for motorists but rather a poor location4 ,one-half mile further is the ,gentry ,townsite1 laid out about #aiad1 and beyond1 the site of the old ,gentry ,sawmill4 ,there are here a few good places for auto camps4 ,water will be found at a spring above the road4 ,cascade ,creek is crossed a short distance northward4 ,the crossing offers no good camp sites4 ,fishing is fair4 ,the short steep grade beyond the bridge is known locally as ,fords' ,rest4 ,we now ascend ,lilly ,creek to the crossing about half a mile above4 ,here the blazes of the old ,mono ,trail may be seen at the left leading down to a point on the rim of the canyon about three miles distant1 where was once the terminus of the ,coulterville ,road4 ,in the early days this was one of the chief routes used by the ,indians and cattlemen4 ,two miles beyond ,cascade ,creek is ,tamarack ,flat 7,alt4 #fcij71 named from the tamarack or lodgepole pine here so abundant4 ,this is a splendid camping place1 but somewhat cold4 ,fishing is fair and horse feed may be found upstream4 ,a trail branching to the right leads to ,aspen ,valley1 six miles distant4 ,it is extremely brushy1 poorly marked and almost impassable4 ,three miles westward is ,gin ,flat1 the summit of the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road4 ,the meadow1 bordered by red and white fir and ,jeffrey and lodgepole pine1 offers an attractive but cold campsite4 ,there is a tradition that a barrel of gin was once buried here by one of the old-time whiskey peddlers1 who was shortly afterwards killed4 ,a more or less desultory search on the part of not a few old-timers failed to discover the prize1 so after a few decades the matter became almost legendary4 ,but in #aiji1 as a battalion of negro cavalry were marching to ,yosemite for patrol duty1 the tradition was in some way picked up in ,groveland by one of the troopers4 ,the commanding officer could hardly understand why his troops pushed on so readily the next day until1 when camp was pitched at ,gin ,flat1 they started to dig4 ,not a stone in the vicinity was left unturned--but the gin was never found4 ,at ,crane ,flat 7,alt4 #fcaa7 two miles further west are many excellent camp sites4 ,this camping ground is the one nearest to the ,tuolumne ,grove of ,big ,trees4 ,water is conveniently piped from a spring to the vicinity of the ranger cabin4 ,it is a good plan1 if camp is to be made at ,crane ,flat1 to gather firewood en route1 for it is scarce in the immediate region4 ,motorists should register at the log cabin of the ,park ,ranger1 and all east-bound cars should take water4 ,a road branching southwestward leads to ,hazel ,green1 about five miles distant on the ,coulterville ,road1 and to the ,merced ,grove of ,big ,trees1 seven and a half miles away4 ,it is narrow and steep1 but in fair condition4 ,about a quarter of a mile from ,crane ,flat the ,davis 7private7 ,road turns to the left from the ,hazel ,green cut-off and leads to ,big ,meadows 7#d4e miles7 and ,el ,portal 7#aa4e miles74 ,the main road bears to the north a short distance after leaving ,crane ,flat and1 after one mile of steep descent1 enters the ,tuolumne ,grove of ,sequoias4 ,most of the thirty trees in the small grove are advantageously seen from the road1 but a short side trip to the tunnelled ,dead ,giant 7above and to the right7 is well worth while4 ,this subsidiary road is steep and narrow and most people prefer to walk to the giant4 ,one-half mile below the grove the main road passes beneath the rustic gateway which marks the boundary between ,yosemite ,national ,park and the ,stanislaus ,national ,forest4 ,there are two possible auto camps in the next mile1 but neither are very good4 ,bearing westward the road follows down the canyon of ,north ,crane ,creek4 ,good camp sites will be found at the crossing about two miles below the park line4 ,hogdon ,ranch1 a little more than a mile further1 is another good place to camp4 ,at this abandoned cattle ranch an old road branches to the left4 ,it is impassable because of washouts4 ,a mile and a half further along the main road is ,carl ,inn1 a mountain summer resort on the ,south ,fork of the ,tuolumne ,river4 ,accommodations are excellent4 ,gasoline and oil may here be obtained4 ,there are many fine camp sites in the vicinity and fishing is fair4 ,one may obtain saddle or pack animals at the hotel for trail trips in the region4 ,just west from the hotel is a main road junction4 ,the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road to ,chinese ,camp1 ,knights ,ferry and ,stockton continues down the ,south ,fork1 while our road crosses the ,new ,england ,bridge and bears northward4 ,one mile takes us to another junction where the ,hetch ,hetchy ,road 7,road ,trip ,v7 branches to the left4 ,the ,tioga ,road turns eastward1 ascends a rather steep grade thru a fine forest of pine1 cedar and oak1 and in #d4b miles again enters the park at ,aspen ,valley ,ranger ,station4 ,motorists should stop and register4 ,a government telephone is here available4 ,there are excellent camping places in the vicinity and a good spring about two hundred yards northwest of the ranger cabin4 ,two miles inside the park is ,aspen ,valley1 another abandoned cattle ranch4 ,the long meadow offers a delightful camp4 ,the ,carlin ,trail1 which is used chiefly by cattlemen1 branches to the westward at this point and makes a rough descent to ,ackerson ,meadow six miles distant4 ,leading southeast is a trail to ,tamarack ,flat on the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road4 ,over most of its six miles it is so brushy as to be almost impassable and it is now little used4 ,about one mile north of ,aspen ,valley the seldom used ,packers' ,trail begins at the left of the road and bears northward toward ,hetch ,hetchy4 ,from ,aspen ,valley eastward good camping places are so numerous that several will be passed each hour4 ,they will therefore not be mentioned in the following text4 ,our road now ascends ,long ,gulch1 passes over a low divide1 and in #d4b miles crosses the ,middle ,fork of the ,tuolumne ,river4 ,this is an attractive auto camp but horse feed is scarce4 ,the stream is well stocked with rainbow and eastern brook trout4 ,we now follow along the well-wooded banks of the ,middle ,fork and in about three and a half miles1 where the road makes a big bend toward the southeast1 we find the beginning of the trail to ,harden ,lake1 ,hetch ,hetchy1 and the ,grand ,canyon of the ,tuolumne4 ,the beautiful little ,harden ,lake 7,alt4 #gege7 is only one mile distant by trail4 ,it is a most attractive place to lunch and the round trip can easily be made in less than one hour4 ,from points just north of the lake a most comprehensive view of the ,grand ,canyon of the ,tuolumne is revealed4 ,harden ,lake contains no trout4 ,white ,wolf1 some two miles beyond the ,harden ,lake ,trail ,junction1 is one of the many fine meadows which our road now traverses4 ,the old ,ten ,lakes ,trail shown on the ,u4,s4,g4,s4 maps as leading eastward from this point has been superseded by the new ,ten ,lakes ,trail up ,yosemite ,creek4 ,the old blazes may be followed eastward two and a half miles to ,lukens ,lake 7,alt4 #hdej71 a charming little mountain lakelet surrounded by a park-like forest4 ,it has not yet been stocked with trout4 ,about three miles beyond ,white ,wolf the ,yosemite ,creek ,trail 7,trail ,trip #aa7 branches to the right 7south74 ,yosemite is ten miles distant by this excellent trail4 ,passing several small meadows1 one of which is ,dark ,hole1 we descend in about two miles to ,yosemite ,creek ,ranger ,cabin4 ,the station is connected by telephone to ,yosemite4 ,from here a good trail bears to the southwest and joins the main ,yosemite ,creek ,trail one and a half miles below4 ,good camp sites are numerous in the vicinity and at the ,yosemite ,creek ,crossing1 about a quarter of a mile eastward1 the new ,ten ,lakes ,trail follows up the east bank of the creek4 ,our road now ascends about two and a half miles of heavy grades1 finally passing over a flat divide and descending almost imperceptibly to the large meadows at ,porcupine ,flat1 an excellent camping place4 ,one mile further the ,yosemite ,falls ,trail branches to the right and leads southwest five miles to ,yosemite ,point4 ,in another mile ,snow ,creek is crossed4 ,fishing is fair down stream4 ,snow ,flat1 two and a half miles further1 is an especially good place to camp4 ,it is the usual base camp for the ascent of ,mount ,hoffman 7,alt4 #aj1iba71 three miles to the northwest4 ,may ,lake 7,alt4 #idjj7 is about one mile north of the road by a plainly blazed but rough trail which climbs about #ejj feet en route4 ,beautifully set in the rugged glacial amphitheatre at the east shoulder of ,mount ,hoffman1 which towers imposingly above1 it offers one of the most attractive side trips of the region4 ,as a campsite it is unsurpassed4 ,in the days when troops were guardians of the park this was the officers' private fishing lake--and fishing is most excellent4 ,it was stocked with ,loch ,leven trout in #aijh1 with eastern brook in #aijh and #aiag1 and with rainbow in #aijh and #aiac4 ,from ,snow ,flat the road rises abruptly for a short distance1 then descends #hjj feet in the next three miles to ,lake ,tenaya4 ,near a sharp bend in the road about one mile from the lake1 a trail to the right 7,trail ,trip #e7 leads to ,yosemite via ,mirror ,lake4 ,tenaya ,lake 7,alt4 #hada7 is one of the gems of the ,high ,sierra4 ,it is a large1 deep1 glacial lake imposingly surrounded by granite crags and domes4 ,its ,indian name1 ,py-we-ack1 meant lake of the glistening rocks1 referring to the glacier polished granite at its upper end4 ,the lake and the pyramidal peak to the east were renamed ,tenaya when the last remnant of ,chief ,tenaya's ,yosemite ,tribe was captured here by the ,mariposa ,battalion on ,june #e1 #ahea4 ,the lake is one of the best in the park for a permanent auto camp4 ,it was stocked with ,loch ,leven trout in #aiaa and with rainbow1 eastern brook1 black spotted1 and steelhead in #aiag1 #aiah1 and #aiai1 but fishing is only fair4 ,from the lower end of the lake the ,forsyth ,pass ,trail 7,trail ,trip #f7 bears eastward across the rocky meadows1 and the ,yosemite ,trail 7,trail ,trip #e7 takes off toward the southwest4 ,our road skirts the western lake shore4 ,at a point where ,murphy ,creek enters from the north are the ruins of a log cabin which was built by ,john ,l4 ,murphy1 one of the early pioneer guides of the region4 ,the ,mc,gee ,lake ,trail to ,waterwheel ,falls here turns off from the road4 ,rounding the polished base of ,polly ,dome 7,alt4 #ighf7 we finally halt at ,tenaya ,lake ,lodge near the white beach at the lake's upper extremity4 ,accommodations are excellent and fishing tackle and rowboats may be rented4 ,at the head of the long flat canyon bottom is a peculiar glacial monument often mistaken for ,polly ,dome4 ,passing this1 our road continues up the stream to its source1 where the great ,tuolumne ,glacier overflowed and sent a branch southward to help carve out the stupendous depths of ,tenaya ,canyon4 ,tuolumne ,meadows 7,alt4 #heid71 the most superb of all high mountain pleasure grounds1 lies seven and a half miles from ,tenaya ,lake4 ,in the region are innumerable side trips to alpine summits1 to lakes and streams teeming with trout1 to thundering waterfalls1 and to peaceful green pastures of the highlands4 ,tioga ,pass 7,alt4 #iida7 is seven miles further1 and another sixteen miles takes us down ,leevining ,canyon to the weird semi-desert region at ,mono ,lake4 ,the road then continues northward to ,lake ,tahoe about #aah miles distant4 ,,road ,,trip ,v ,,yosemite ,,to ,,hetch ,,hetchy via ,,big ,,oak ,,flat ,,road ,,and ,,hetch ,,hetchy ,,railroad 7,round trip #gg miles--#a day by motor and railroad7 ,a new and exceptionally scenic one-day round trip between ,yosemite and ,hetch ,hetchy has been made possible by the construction activities on the ,san ,francisco ,dam4 ,throughout the entire season a gasoline railroad bus runs on daily schedule between ,mather 7,hog ,ranch7 and ,hetch ,hetchy1 stopping long enough to allow one to view the wonderful canyon and to inspect the enormous engineering project4 ,one may motor privately from ,yosemite to ,mather or may ride by the auto stage1 which makes one round trip daily4 ,from ,yosemite we follow the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road 7,road ,trips ,,vi and ,,iv7 to the road junction one mile north of ,carl ,inn1 a resort on the ,south ,fork of the ,tuolumne ,river4 ,at this junction 7#bc4d miles from ,yosemite7 we turn to the left on the old ,hog ,ranch ,road1 which bears to the northwest thru the pines of the ,stanislaus ,national ,forest4 ,the following six-mile drive to ,mather is entirely thru delightful woods and meadows--a country quite attractive but with no startling scenic effects4 ,at ,mather is the ,hog ,ranch ,ranger ,station1 which is connected by telephone with ,yosemite and outside points4 ,here we again enter ,yosemite ,national ,park4 ,in the nine-mile rail-motor excursion to ,hetch ,hetchy we first traverse a dense pine forest for one mile and then1 emerging at the rim of ,tuolumne ,canyon1 have a wonderfully scenic ride to our destination4 ,hetch ,hetchy is a deeply sculptured ,yosemite-like valley with the broad meadows of its level floor flanked by dominating castellated cliffs4 ,its most impressive feature is ,kolana ,rock1 a massive promontory buttressing the precipitous south wall4 ,the two great waterfalls--,tueeulala1 the spirit of gracefulness1 and ,wapama1 the very soul of power--tumble over the north ramparts at the upper end of the valley4 ,fortunate1 indeed1 will be the visitors of the next few seasons1 for the great gorge will be as yet unflooded4 ,,road ,,trip ,,vi ,,yosemite ,,to ,,el ,,portal via ,,el ,,capitan ,,road 7#ae miles--#a-a_/b hours by stage7 ,the final hour in ,yosemite ,national ,park--that generally spent in the ride from the valley to ,el ,portal--is one of interest1 but it must be admitted1 of anti-climax4 ,facing westward we lose the wonderful views which burst upon us in entering1 but the trip1 for all of that1 is attractive4 ,from ,yosemite ,village either the ,bridalveil or the ,el ,capitan ,road may be followed4 ,the former is the more scenic and is described as ,road ,trip ,,vi-,a4 ,the latter is set forth in the following text4 ,crossing ,sentinel ,bridge our poplar-bordered road bears northward across a wide meadow from which are magnificent views of ,yosemite ,falls and the ,lost ,arrow straight ahead1 and ,north ,dome1 ,royal ,arches and ,half ,dome to the right4 ,at the ,grizzly ,hotel site a road forks eastward to ,mirror ,lake 7,road ,trip ,,ii74 ,turning westward beneath the giant black oaks of the meadow border1 we soon pass the old ,hutchings ,orchard4 ,the memorial bench at the left marks the spot from which ,galen ,clarke so loved to contemplate the beauty of ,cholook1 the fall of falls4 ,a little further are the wild azalia gardens of ,yosemite ,creek4 ,just west of the rustic bridge a short branch road turns to the right to the foot of ,yosemite ,falls4 ,we continue straight ahead1 passing ,yosemite ,hospital at the right and then running beneath the arcade of ,yosemite ,lodge4 ,just across the road is the swimming tank1 the tennis courts1 laundry1 etc4 ,the main buildings occupy the site of ,koom-i-ne1 the largest and most important of the old ,indian villages4 ,bearing southward1 we now round the base of ,three ,brothers1 the ,waw-haw-kee or falling rocks of the ,indians4 ,at the foot of the great buttress is ,rocky ,point4 ,the ,yosemite tribes called the place ,we-ck 7the rocks7 because1 according to their traditions1 the huge boulders in the vicinity fell upon their trail4 ,it is among these boulders that ,tenaya's three sons were captured in #aheb1 and the colossal monument above was named for them4 ,swinging more directly westward1 our road now skirts the base of ,el ,capitan1 the ,tote-ack-ah-noo-la or rock chief of the ,indians4 ,the image of their fanciful chief is to this day pointed out on the wall two thousand feet overhead1 but he is now called ,the ,wandering ,jew4 ,in a shallow niche #aahi feet above the road stands a hardy ,jeffrey pine #hb4d feet high and two feet in diameter4 ,for half a mile we pass thru ,el ,capitan ,meadows1 where once were the ,indian villages of ,yu-a-chah1 ,ha-eng-ah1 ,he-le-jah and ,aw-o-koi-e4 ,at certain times during the day the ,cathedral ,spires and ,cathedral ,rocks on the opposite side of the valley stand out in remarkable perspective1 but under general light conditions this stereoscopic effect is entirely lacking4 ,beyond ,el ,capitan the ,ribbon ,fall may be seen1 its dainty streamer gracefully descending into the rather harsh box-like recess in the canyon wall4 ,its ,indian name was ,lung-o-to-ko-ya1 or pigeon falls4 ,a cross road to the left passes ,el ,capitan ,checking ,station and crosses ,el ,capitan ,bridge to the ,bridalveil ,road south of the ,merced 7,road ,trips ,i-,a and ,,vi-,a74 ,a few steps further along our route the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road turns to the right and ascends thru the shattered granite talus of the north canyon side4 ,at this junction was the old ,indian village of ,hep-hep'-oo-ma4 ,paralleling the ,merced1 we now and then are treated to glimpses of ,bridalveil ,fall dropping gracefully from its hanging valley and guarded at the left by ,cathedral ,rocks and at the right by the ,leaning ,tower4 ,where our route traverses a small meadow is the site of another vanished village1 ,we'-tum-taw4 ,a short distance beyond is ,black ,spring1 which is but a few steps to the right of the road4 ,the ,yosemites called it ,poot-poo-toon1 and among the rocks surrounding it was a small community of the same name4 ,our road now bends gradually southward following the banks of the ,merced4 ,across the stream is ,bridalveil ,meadow and an especially fine view of the ,gates of the ,valley4 ,a short distance further is ,pohono ,bridge1 where our road is joined by the ,bridalveil ,road 7,road ,trips ,i-,a and ,,vi-,a7 from the south side of the valley4 ,about a quarter of a mile westward is the old ,mail ,carrier's ,cabin1 the site of the ancient village of ,ah-wah'-ma4 ,across the canyon the rugged ramparts of the south rim rise imposingly above and ,meadow ,brook pours over the edge to leap #aagj feet as ,widow's ,tears ,fall4 ,a small dam in the ,merced diverts water for the intake of the two thousand-watt generators of the new government power house just below the road4 ,south of the river is a grotesque promontory which is well named ,pulpit ,rock4 ,at the two small bridges about one and a half miles further down the canyon we pass the foot of ,cascade ,falls which1 during the flood waters of early spring1 is one of the most attractive scenic features of the ,el ,portal ,highway4 ,from these bridges is also the best view of ,elephant ,rock1 down the canyon4 ,less than a quarter of a mile further1 ,wildcat ,falls pour over the cliff at the right4 ,a short distance beyond1 stage drivers often point out the image of a white ,persian cat on the wall above the road4 ,the old ,coulterville ,road now branches to the right and steeply ascends the canyon wall4 ,this was the first road into ,yosemite and was completed in #ahgd4 ,just below ,elephant ,rock is ,battleship ,harbor1 a placid reach of the ,merced in which fancied granite dreadnaughts ride anchor4 ,a little more than a mile further down the canyon ,grouse ,creek tumbles over the south wall in a series of cascades4 ,we now pass beneath ,arch ,rock1 a natural tunnel formed by two huge granite talus blocks4 ,the trail bridge across the ,merced1 a short distance westward1 is the crossing of the ,sunset ,trail1 which passes the mid-winter ranger station opposite and ascends past the foot of ,avalanche ,falls to the ,wawona ,road1 #bejj feet above4 ,two miles further down the canyon we pass out of the park and into the ,stanislaus ,national ,forest thru a region of gnarled oaks and silver-gray digger pines4 ,during the early season ,indian ,creek1 across the canyon1 forms the picturesque ,chinquapin ,falls4 ,one mile below the park line is ,el ,portal1 the terminus of the ,yosemite ,valley ,railroad4 ,there is here a hotel and a small store4 ,on the opposite slope is the incline of the ,yosemite ,lumber ,company down which flat cars loaded with logs are lowered4 ,from ,el ,portal a four-hour ride by railroad takes us to ,merced4 ,,road ,,trip ,,vi-,a ,,yosemite ,,village ,,to ,,pohono ,,bridge via ,,the ,,bridalveil ,,road 7#e miles--#bj minutes by stage7 ,the ,bridalveil ,road parallels the south bank of the ,merced from ,yosemite to ,pohono ,bridge1 five miles westward4 ,this route is more attractive and more scenic than the northern1 or ,el ,capitan ,road1 which is often taken by the stages4 ,from ,yosemite ,village we bear westward across the meadows4 ,the ,sentinel towers above at the left and in the distance are the portals of the valley4 ,about one mile takes us past a ,park ,ranger's cabin near the spot where ,galen ,clarke's house stood until #aiai4 ,just northward1 at the edge of a big meadow1 was once the ,indian village of ,hoo'-koo-me'-ko-tah4 ,a little further and directly under the ,sentinel stand the remaining buildings of old ,camp ,awahnee1 occupying the site of the large and important ,indian community of ,loi'-ah4 ,the name1 which means a long water basket1 was also the ,yosemites' appellation for the great rock tower above4 ,the ,short ,trail to ,glacier ,point here turns to the left and begins its zigzag course up the canyon wall4 ,the ,ford ,road1 a subsidiary route branching to the right1 leads to ,the ,big ,pine1 which is the largest known specimen of western yellow pine in the park4 ,during the flood waters of early spring1 ,sentinel ,falls descend in a picturesque cascade at the western flank of the great obelisk4 ,again continuing westward1 we are treated to charming vistas across the ,merced4 ,especially effective from this angle is the great triple pyramid of ,three ,brothers buttressing the north wall4 ,just opposite them on the banks of the river was ,kis-se1 the westernmost of the large ,indian villages on the south or coyote side of the valley4 ,to the west a splendid profile of ,el ,capitan is revealed and suddenly at the left of the road the ,cathedral ,spires1 each rising #ejj feet from its base1 seem to tower above the south rim4 ,the ,yosemites called the latter ,po-see-na ,chuck-ah1 or mouse-proof rocks1 from a fancied resemblance to their acorn caches4 ,a village just below them in a small meadow near the river was called ,we-sum-meh4 ,we now skirt the powerfully outlined ,cathedral ,rocks4 ,at ,el ,capitan ,bridge one may cross to the north side of the river4 ,directly opposite is a ranger station at the foot of the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road 7,road ,trip ,,iv74 ,from that point the ,el ,capitan ,road 7,road ,trips ,i and ,,vi7 leads both up and down the valley4 ,continuing along the shaded highway1 we veer to the south1 passing close to the foot of ,bridalveil ,fall1 charming glimpses of which are here and there revealed between the trees4 ,just below a very large rock at the east margin of ,bridalveil ,creek is the site of the ancient village of ,lem-me-hitch-ke4 ,perhaps the unspeakable awe with which the ,yosemites were supposed to look upon ,pohono1 the spirit of the evil wind1 has been somewhat exaggerated in the past4 ,a short subsidiary road turns to the left to the foot of the fall1 a brief side trip which should be taken by all visitors4 ,a short drive now takes us to the junction with the ,wawona ,road 7,road ,trip ,,iii7 which bears to the left at ,bridalveil ,checking ,station and climbs thru the forests of the canyon-side4 ,turning to the right1 we soon enter ,bridalveil ,meadow4 ,near the river was once the ,indian village of ,sap-pah-sam-mah4 ,at the edge of the meadow1 about #ajj feet north of the road1 a dense grove of oaks and pines shelters the graves of two pioneers1 ,rose and ,shurban1 who were massacred here by the ,indians in #aheb4 ,the view back across the meadows towards the ,gates of the ,valley is one of the best from this elevation4 ,at the left is the great shoulder of ,el ,capitan1 with the ,ribbon ,fall almost hidden in a deep recess at its west4 ,at the right of the portal the beautiful ,bridalveil leaps gracefully from its hanging valley between ,cathedral ,rocks and the ,leaning ,tower4 ,plunging again into the deep woods1 we stop for a draught of ice-cold water at ,fern ,spring1 and a short distance beyond emerge at the beautiful border of the ,merced4 ,crossing ,pohono ,bridge we join the ,el ,portal ,road4 ,el ,portal is ten miles westward via ,road ,trip ,,vi1 and ,yosemite five miles eastward via ,road ,trip ,i4 ,,yosemite ,,trails ,for an ideal vacation-land1 ,yosemite could scarcely be surpassed4 ,of the #fjj miles of trails in the park probably half are within two days walking distance of the valley4 ,it is this portion of the park which is described in the following trail trips--the region which may be seen on walking tours from the valley as a base camp4 ,for the person whose days in ,yosemite are limited1 ,glacier ,point undoubtedly offers the most attractive one-day excursion4 ,it is reached by a number of trails1 chief of which are the beautiful ,vernal and ,nevada ,falls ,trail1 the steep but thrilling climb up the narrow ,ledge ,trail1 and the dusty1 toilsome ascent of the ,short ,trail4 ,most thrilling of all ,yosemite ,trails is the ascent of ,half ,dome1 made possible by the recent construction of a cable-guarded route up its north shoulder4 ,further northeastward is the commanding summit of ,clouds ,rest1 a long one-day round trip1 but well repaid by a magnificent panorama of the ,high ,sierra4 ,north of the ,yosemite walls the most comprehensive views may be had from ,eagle ,peak4 ,the top of ,north ,dome is also a vantage point of the first order1 but the round trip is a long one-day climb4 ,the summit of ,el ,capitan1 although exceedingly lofty1 is rather disappointing except for the view over its rim into the abyss below4 ,sierra ,point is but one hour's climb above the valley and offers an especially good panorama4 ,many ideal two-day walking trips from ,yosemite are made possible by accommodations at the lodges in the ,high ,sierra4 ,chief among these excursions are the trips to ,lake ,tenaya1 ,tuolumne ,meadows and ,merced ,lake4 ,other charming trails are described in the following text4 ,,trail ,,trip #a ,,yosemite ,,to ,,glacier ,,point via ,,vernal ,,and ,,nevada ,,falls ,,and ,,return via ,,the ,,short ,,trail ,reverse of ,trail ,trip #b 7#af miles--#h hours7 ,if one were so time-poor as to have but one day in ,yosemite1 he should by all means climb to ,glacier ,point via ,vernal and ,nevada ,falls and return via the ,short ,trail4 ,this most scenic trip is easily made afoot in one day and should be taken as follows rather than in the opposite direction because 7a7 one faces the falls in ascending1 and 7b7 the gradual ascent is less tiring4 ,early in the season it is a good plan to carry a sack or newspaper for protection while passing thru the mist of ,vernal ,falls4 ,the ,vernal and ,nevada ,falls ,trail starts near ,happy ,isles ,bridge1 #b4c miles from ,yosemite ,village4 ,the trail leaves the road at the right just beyond the bridge1 or we may take the footpath through ,happy ,isles1 crossing the river on a foot-log and joining the main trail a quarter mile above4 ,ascending the canyon1 the trail climbs #bjj feet above the roaring ,merced1 which was here called by the ,indians the ,yanopah or water cloud1 referring to the mist of ,vernal ,falls4 ,a quarter of a mile from the bridge is a fine spring4 ,here the ,sierra ,point ,trail 7,trail ,trip #ab7 turns left4 ,rounding the base of ,grizzly ,peak we pass opposite the mouth of ,illilouette ,canyon and see ,illilouette ,falls 7,drop #cej feet7 at its head4 ,the name is a corruption of the ,indian name1 ,too-tool-a-we-ack4 ,the small dam in the river below diverts water to the ,happy ,isles ,power ,house4 ,to the left of ,illilouette ,canyon is ,panorama ,cliff1 along the rim of which our trail runs after a three-hour climb by the ,mist ,trail 7one hour longer by horse trail74 ,descending #ajj feet the trail crosses ,vernal ,bridge1 from which is a fine view of ,vernal ,falls1 a half mile distant4 ,near this point was the old ,indian ,camp of ,ap-poo-meh4 ,straight ahead the horse trail climbs #afjj feet and then descends to the top of ,vernal ,falls4 ,pedestrians should take the much more scenic ,mist ,trail1 which turns left just beyond the bridge1 saving thereby one hour and several hundred feet climb4 ,paralleling the river we pass ,lady ,franklin ,rock1 from whence may be obtained excellent photographs of ,vernal ,falls4 ,the trail mounts thru the boulder-strewn forest and finally rounds a rocky point on a narrow ledge4 ,use extreme caution on slippery wet rocks6 ,we now enter the mist1 traversing the luxuriant garden of flowers and grasses which gives the fall its name4 ,between #aj and #ab a4m4 beautiful circular rainbows may be seen in the mist4 ,climbing the steep slope at the right we obtain fine profiles of the fall4 ,the trail then swings beneath an overhanging cliff and mounts a steep narrow ledge to the top of ,vernal ,falls 7,alt4 #ejdi1 ,drop #cag feet74 ,the ,indians called the fall ,yan-o-pah1 or water cloud1 which was also the name for the canyon below4 ,over the rim of the natural granite parapet we have an excellent outlook down the canyon4 ,by climbing along the rim southeast of the falls we find a ladder and hanging trail descending to a grotto1 from which a good view of ,glacier ,point is obtained4 ,above ,vernal ,falls we pass a glacial tarn called ,emerald ,pool1 at the upper end of which the ,merced rushes down over smooth granite1 forming the beautiful ,silver ,apron and ,waterwheel4 ,just above is the ,diamond ,cascade and bridge4 ,our trail now joins the horse trail1 which descends from the slope above4 ,crossing the river at ,diamond ,cascade1 the trail ascends to ,snow ,flat below ,liberty ,cap 7,alt4 #gjgb71 which towers above to the left4 ,this granite dome1 the ,mah'-ta1 or ,martyr ,mountain of the ,indians1 can be ascended by a difficult climb up its eastern flank4 ,good rock-climbers will find an interesting scramble up the deep defile between this dome and ,mt4 ,broderick 7,alt4 #fgje7 just northward4 ,at the left of the trail is the site of the old ,la ,casa ,nevada ,hotel 7,the ,snow ,house71 which was built in the early days and burned down in #ahig4 ,the old register is in the ,yosemite ,museum4 ,the rockslide to the left fell from the face of ,liberty ,cap in #aiah4 ,fishing is fair from ,diamond ,cascade to ,nevada ,falls4 ,the trail turns left and mounts #ejj feet by the famous ,nevada ,falls ,zigzags4 ,when white men first visited ,yosemite1 part of the ,merced descended in a cascade where the trail is now built4 ,at the top of the switchbacks the trail to ,little ,yosemite1 ,clouds ,rest1 ,tuolumne ,meadows and ,merced ,lake 7,trail ,trips #ac1 #e1 #h and #g7 continues up the canyon4 ,there is here a government telephone 7,central #a ring74 ,the new location of a refreshment stand and rest house in the vicinity is indicated by a sign4 ,our trail turns right and crosses a small bridge1 thence turning southwest to the top of ,nevada ,falls 7,alt4 #eiaj1 ,height #eid ft474 ,nevada is snow in ,spanish and replaces the old ,indian name ,yo-wy-we4 ,note especially the shooting spray rockets4 ,these are most wonderful when painted by first rays of sunshine at #g4cj to #h a4m4 ,many claim that1 looking down from the rim1 the ,nevada is the valley's most fascinating and beautiful fall4 ,above this point the river was called by the ,yosemite ,tribe ,yo-wy-we-ack1 or the twisting rock branch4 ,crossing the river just above the falls1 the trail climbs abruptly #gjj feet by switchbacks4 ,at the summit the ,mono ,meadow and ,merced ,pass ,trail up ,illilouette ,creek turns left 7,trail ,trip #bc74 ,our trail turns right and follows the rim of ,panorama ,cliff almost level for about one mile to ,panorama ,point 7,alt4 #fbbd74 ,from here is a fine view of ,royal ,arches1 ,washington ,column and ,north ,dome across the head of ,yosemite ,valley1 and of ,half ,dome and ,grizzly ,peak to the right4 ,the trail descends #djj feet to the top of ,illilouette ,falls 7,alt4 #ehej1 ,fall #cgj ft474 ,good fishing is reported in upper ,illilouette ,creek4 ,exploration up this canyon will well repay those interested in glacial phenomena4 ,climbing out of the ,illilouette ,canyon1 the trail runs north thru open forest4 ,the fallen trees and prostrate bushes are caused by snow-slides from ,illilouette ,ridge above 7,alt4 #hbej4 ,fine view from summit74 ,as the trail climbs1 the view of ,mt4 ,starr ,king1 ,mt4 ,clark and the ,high ,sierra gradually unfolds4 ,the trail joining from the south leads to ,buena ,vista ,lake and ,royal ,arch ,lake 7,trail ,trip #bb74 ,from one point in the ascent is an especially good profile of ,half ,dome across the canyon4 ,following along granite ledges the trail passes ,glacier ,point ,hotel 7,alt4 #gbjj71 from which is a most comprehensive panorama of the ,high ,sierra4 ,accommodations are excellent and one should remain here over night if possible to see the sunrise4 ,glacier ,point and the overhanging rock are about #bjj yards beyond the hotel4 ,this lookout point was called ,patill'ima by the ,yosemite ,tribe4 ,from here we obtain what is without doubt the vastest and most awe-inspiring view readily accessible to tourists4 ,the valley floor is #cbej feet below4 ,an inclined shaft elevator thru solid granite from the foot of the cliff is being planned4 ,for trips from ,glacier ,point see ,trail ,trips #af to #bc4 ,the descent from ,glacier ,point to ,yosemite is generally made by the ,short ,trail 7#e miles1 #a-a_/b hour walk74 ,from the hotel the trail follows westward along the canyon wall4 ,rounding a point we get an excellent profile view of the ,gates of the ,valley with ,sentinel ,rock at the left and ,el ,capitan at the right4 ,descending #ijj feet by switchbacks thru a forest of fir1 sugar pine1 yellow pine1 ,douglas fir and incense cedar1 we reach ,union ,point 7,alt4 #fcad--bcej feet above the valley floor74 ,there is here a refreshment stand where cooling drinks and light lunches may be obtained4 ,a short distance from the point is a shelter cabin and a government telephone 7,central #a ring74 ,descending past ,agassiz ,column1 a huge balancing shaft of granite1 the trail zigzags down the mountain side1 emerging at several vantage points from which are obtained especially fine views of ,half ,dome and the north end of the valley4 ,the character of the forest now changes1 oaks and laurel entering to replace the diminishing fir4 ,the trail terminates at the foot of ,sentinel ,rock at the site of the old ,camp ,awahnee and the more ancient ,indian village of ,loi'-ah4 ,yosemite is #a4c miles distant by road to the right4 ,during the season a regular auto-bus service is maintained between this and other valley points4 ,,trail ,,trip #b ,,yosemite ,,to ,,glacier ,,point via ,,the ,,short ,,trail ,,and ,,return via ,,vernal ,,and ,,nevada ,,falls ,reverse of ,trail ,trip #a 7#af miles--#h hours7 ,the ,glacier ,point excursion is a most scenic one-day trip and this is the most widely used of ,yosemite trails4 ,parties are advised to take the reverse of this trip 7,trail ,trip #a7 thereby obtaining views of the falls which are unnoticed on the down trip4 ,the ascent is also more gradual and therefore less tiring4 ,the ,short ,trail to ,glacier ,point starts from the ,bridalveil ,road #a4c miles west of ,yosemite at the site of old ,camp ,awahnee and of the more ancient ,indian village of ,loi'-ah4 ,turning southward we ascend abruptly thru a dense forest of oak1 mountain laurel1 scattered pines1 cedar and ,douglas fir4 ,as the trail climbs rapidly by switchbacks1 broad-leaved trees disappear1 their places being taken by sugar pines and true firs from above4 ,frequently the trail emerges at vantage points from which are obtained especially fine views of ,half ,dome and the north end of the valley4 ,a climb of #bcej feet takes us past a balancing shaft of granite1 ,agassiz ,column1 to ,union ,point 7,alt4 #fcad74 ,at this fine view-point are a government shelter cabin and telephone 7,central #a ring47 ,the remaining #ijj-;foot climb to ,glacier ,point is thru a dense forest with some vast views to the northeast4 ,a short level stretch near the end leads to ,glacier ,point 7,alt4 #gbad74 ,the view from the vicinity of the overhanging rock is without doubt the vastest and most awe-inspiring sight readily accessible to tourists4 ,the ,yosemite ,tribe called this lookout point ,patill'ima4 ,yosemite is #cbej feet below4 ,an inclined shaft elevator thru solid granite from the foot of the cliff is being planned4 ,for fine4 ,accommodations are excellent and it is recommended that the tourist remain over night if possible to see the sunrise4 ,passing the hotel the trail descends gradually along granite ledges revealing a most impressive profile of ,half ,dome across the canyon4 ,during the descent into the canyon of the ,illilouette several patches of fallen trees and prostrate brush are passed4 ,these are caused by the frequent snow slides from the ,illilouette ,ridge above 7,alt4 #hbej4 ,fine view74 ,at a trail forks1 the ,buena ,vista ,trail 7,trail ,trip #bb7 branches south up the ,illilouette canyon4 ,a climb of #cge feet takes us to ,panorama ,point 7,alt4 #fbbd71 from which is an imposing view of the upper end of the valley and the mouth of ,tenaya ,canyon4 ,to the right is the sheer edge of ,panorama ,cliff1 along which our trail now follows almost level for about a mile4 ,in the canyon below can be seen our route of about two hours hence4 ,at a trail forks the ,mono ,meadow and ,merced ,pass ,trail 7,trail ,trip #bc7 turns right into the ,illilouette ,creek ,basin4 ,now begins an abrupt descent of #gjj feet by switchbacks to the ,merced ,river which1 above this point1 was called by the ,yosemite ,tribe the ,yo-wy-we-ack or twisting rock branch4 ,a few steps from the bridge is the top of ,nevada ,falls 7,alt4 #eiaj1 ,drop #eid ft474 ,nevada is ,spanish for snow and replaces the old ,indian name ,yo-wy-we4 ,many claim that the view from the overhanging ledge is the most fascinating water-vista of ,yosemite4 ,note especially the shooting spray rockets4 ,these are most wonderful when painted by the first rays of sunshine at #g3cj to #h a4m4 ,about a quarter of a mile upstream the trail crosses a small bridge and is joined by the ,clouds ,rest1 ,sunrise1 ,lake ,merced and ,little ,yosemite ,trail 7,trail ,trips #e1 #h1 #g and #ac74 ,here is a government telephone 7,central #a ring74 ,fishing is good about two miles upstream in ,little ,yosemite4 ,in the following abrupt #ejj-;foot descent by zigzags some fine profile views of ,nevada ,falls are obtained4 ,when white men first visited ,yosemite part of the ,merced cascaded down the steep slope where the trail is now built4 ,as the trail crosses ,snow ,flat at the foot of ,nevada ,falls1 the ruins of the old ,la ,casa ,nevada1 or ,snow ,house1 are seen at the right of the trail4 ,the old register1 which dates back to #ahga1 is in the ,yosemite ,museum4 ,liberty ,cap 7,alt4 #gjgb71 which the ,indians called ,mah'ta or ,martyr ,mountain1 towers above to the right4 ,it may be ascended from the from the face of ,liberty ,cap in #aiah4 ,a bridge across the ,merced takes us directly over the ,diamond ,cascade4 ,below is the ,silver ,apron4 ,from the bridge upstream is fair fishing4 ,a short distance beyond the crossing is a fork where the main or horse trail turns to the left and climbs #cej feet up the canyon wall in order to pass ,vernal ,falls4 ,pedestrians should turn to the right and take the far more scenic ,mist ,trail1 thereby saving a half hour and several hundred feet climb4 ,following down the river we pass the ,silver ,apron and ,waterwheel1 below which is a perfect glacial tarn called ,emerald ,pool4 ,near its mouth is the rim of ,vernal ,falls 7,alt4 #ejdi1 ,drop #cag ft474 ,from behind the natural breast-high granite parapet we have another excellent outlook4 ,the fall was called by the ,indians ,yan-o-pah1 or water cloud1 which term was also applied to the canyon below4 ,by climbing along the rim southeast of the falls we find a ladder and hanging trail descending to a grotto1 from which is a good view of ,glacier ,point4 ,nearer the fall the ,mist ,trail suddenly drops over the edge of the cliff and follows down a steep1 narrow ledge which is well guarded by chains and iron posts4 ,from here and from the zigzags just below we obtain excellent profiles of the fall4 ,we now enter the mist1 passing down thru a luxurious growth of grasses and flowers1 which caused the fall to be given its present name4 ,between #aj and #ab a4m4 the beautiful circular rainbows may here be seen4 ,use extreme caution on slippery wet rocks6 ,following around the base of a cliff on a narrow ledge1 the trail again enters a forest and parallels the river4 ,we stop at ,lady ,franklin ,rock1 where is obtained one of the best vistas of the falls 7good photograph74 ,a short distance downstream the two trails reunite just before crossing ,vernal ,bridge1 from which is a good distant view of the falls4 ,in the canyon below was the old ,indian camp of ,ap-poo-meh4 ,the trail now mounts about #bjj feet above the riotous ,merced and in rounding the base of ,grizzly ,peak offers a clear perception of the deep recess below ,illilouette ,falls4 ,again approaching the river we pass a spring and water trough where the ,sierra ,point ,trail 7,trail ,trip #ab7 joins from the right4 ,the ,happy ,isles ,bridge on the main road is a quarter of a mile distant4 ,we have the choice of descending by the main trail or crossing the foot-log to ,happy ,isles1 and thence by several bridges and footpaths to the main road4 ,the road to the right leads to of the ,mirror ,lake zigzags4 ,one should start early1 reaching the top of the falls before the heat becomes excessive4 ,the ,yosemite ,falls ,trail was built in the early days and operated as a toll trail4 ,it leaves the road a short distance west of ,yosemite ,lodge4 ,in the first mile we ascend by sharp zigzags thru a shady grove of golden oak and laurel1 emerging above into the open and climbing granite ledges to ,columbia ,point 7,alt4 #ejca74 ,from here is a splendid view1 especially of the upper end of the valley4 ,turning north1 the trail ascends a few feet and then follows along a granite ledge beautifully shaded by oaks1 laurel1 ,douglas fir and pines4 ,at the left of the trail about a quarter of a mile above ,columbia ,point is a spring4 ,a short1 rather steep descent takes us to ,valley ,view1 a lookout point a short distance to the right of the trail1 from which is an excellent view of the valley and the ,upper ,yosemite ,fall4 ,skirting the base of an almost perpendicular cliff at the left1 the trail approaches the foot of the upper fall and bears to the left4 ,from this point it is possible to leave the trail and climb to the foot of the upper fall1 entering the cave under its base except during high water4 ,the climb is dangerous because of slippery rocks4 ,by switchbacks the trail ascends the steep slope west of the falls1 crossing a small stream after a quarter-mile climb4 ,during the hour ascent of the zigzags1 ,mount ,clark 7,alt4 #aa1ejf71 ,gray ,peak 7,alt4 #aa1eha7 and other ,high ,sierra summits may be seen to the southeast4 ,across the canyon are ,glacier ,point and ,sentinel ,dome4 ,at a trail junction #ajj feet beyond the canyon rim is a government telephone 7,central #a ring74 ,here the ,eagle ,peak and ,yosemite ,creek ,trails continue straight ahead 7,trail ,trips #i1 #aj and #aa74 ,our trail turns to the right and crosses a small stream4 ,just beyond1 the main trail passes over a low rise4 ,a branch to the left follows south along the open ridge for a short distance to the top of the falls4 ,from the railed lookout point1 peering into the chasm below we see what ,muir describes as one of the most impressive phenomena of the valley4 ,retracing our route to the main trail and turning left1 we cross ,yosemite ,creek and climb #cjj feet on the further side1 thence turning southward4 ,a short trail to the rim takes us to ,yosemite ,point 7,alt4 #fice71 from which is a vast view of the valley and the ,high ,sierra4 ,the granite spire at the right and just below is ,le ,hammo1 the ,lost ,arrow of one of the most beautiful ,yosemite ,indian legends4 ,returning to the main trail we climb parallel to the eastern rim of the cliff4 ,to the right are ,castle ,cliffs and the flat summit of ,north ,dome beyond4 ,after a climb of #djj feet the trail crosses a ridge and traverses a dense forest of fir and pine1 descending #djj feet and crossing ,indian ,creek4 ,directly south is ,indian ,canyon1 called by the ,yosemite ,tribe ,le ,hamite1 because of the arrowwood which grew there4 ,their main trail into ,yosemite followed along the precipitous east side of the canyon4 ,the ,little ,winkle ,branch of ,indian ,creek is crossed a half mile beyond the main stream1 and here the ,snow ,flat ,trail continues upstream4 ,turning to the right1 our trail passes thru a fir forest about one mile to ,indian ,ridge1 which it follows south over disintegrating granite and thru stunted forest to the rounded summit of ,north ,dome 7,alt4 #geca74 ,the view is most comprehensive and the sheer vertical wall of ,half ,dome gives an impression of massiveness nowhere else obtained4 ,to the north of the trail near the summit is ,slipper ,rock4 ,in returning to ,yosemite we take all main trails to the right4 ,retracing our path up ,indian ,ridge it is possible to follow the trail back to the ,east or ,little ,winkle ,fork of ,indian ,creek1 and turn right on the ,snow ,flat ,trail1 but the better and the shorter way is to follow the plain blazes which turn to the right about a half mile from the ,north ,dome summit and just west of the crest of ,indian ,ridge4 ,running thru a beautiful forest this trail joins the main ,snow ,flat ,trail at the ,little ,winkle ,branch of ,indian ,creek just west of ,indian ,rock4 ,it is also possible to leave the trail and follow up ,indian ,ridge from ,north ,dome1 gradually bearing to the right of ,indian ,rock and intersecting the main ,mirror ,lake ,trail near the top of the zigzags4 ,our trail follows up the ,east or ,little ,winkle ,branch of ,indian ,creek1 at the source of which the ,porcupine ,flat ,trail branches to the left4 ,the ,mirror ,lake ,trail swings north of ,indian ,rock1 and descends east to a branch of ,snow ,creek1 passing ,snow ,creek ,falls4 ,further down ,snow ,creek is the junction with the ,lake ,tenaya ,trail 7,trail ,trips #e and #f74 ,turning right we further descend ,snow ,creek and pass over the rim of the canyon between ,basket ,dome 7,alt4 #gfjb7 at the right and ,mt4 ,watkins 7,alt4 #hbce7 at the left4 ,in the next one and a half miles a descent of #bejj feet is made by #ajh switchbacks to the floor ,,mirror ,,lake ,,and ,,return via ,,yosemite ,,falls ,,trail ,reverse of ,trail ,trip #c 7#ai4e miles--#aj hours7 ,this is a strenuous one-day climb4 ,the advantage of taking the trip as follows and seeing the sunrise at ,mirror ,lake is more than offset by physical penalty of climbing the hot and steep ,tenaya ,trail zigzags4 ,the trip is better taken in the reverse direction 7,trail ,trip #c74 ,if the following route is adhered to1 it is best to leave ,yosemite as early as possible1 carrying a canteen which should be filled about three-quarters of a mile above ,mirror ,lake4 ,mirror ,lake is three miles distant by road from ,yosemite4 ,here our trail leaves the end of the road and skirts the west shore4 ,following up the canyon beneath the dense forest about one mile we suddenly turn left and start the #bejj-;foot ascent4 ,from the #ajh switchbacks are many fine views4 ,after a long1 tiresome climb the trail passes over the canyon rim between ,mt4 ,watkins 7,alt4 #hbce7 at the right and ,basket ,dome 7,alt4 #gfjb7 at the left4 ,a short distance takes us to ,snow ,creek1 which cascades beautifully further down its rough canyon4 ,turning upstream we soon arrive at a trail fork where the ,tenaya ,lake ,trail 7,trail ,trip #f7 turns right4 ,we turn left1 following up the west branch about a mile further4 ,in high water ,snow ,creek ,falls is especially attractive4 ,the trail now makes a wide detour to the north of ,indian ,rock 7,alt4 #hebf74 ,if desirable1 pedestrians may leave the trail and climb to its summit1 from which are good views1 thence following south down the long open ridge to the summit of ,north ,dome4 ,the trail keeps at a lower elevation1 passing thru almost level fir forests and meadows with a charming diversity of wild-flowers and trees4 ,gradually bearing southward our trail follows down the ,east or ,little ,winkle ,branch of ,indian ,creek from its source4 ,the main ,snow ,flat ,trail continues down this stream1 but we turn left on the plainly blazed cut-off trail to ,north ,dome4 ,passing thru the dense forests on the west flank of ,indian ,ridge1 we finally emerge on the open disintegrated granite at the crest of the long slope leading southward to ,north ,dome4 ,here the ,yosemite ,falls ,trail joins from the west4 ,the rounded summit of ,north ,dome 7,alt4 #geca7 is now easily reached by a walk thru the open forest and over granite pavements1 which here exhibit very well the geological phenomenon of exfoliation or weathering in concentric shells4 ,near the summit and to the north of the trail is ,slipper ,rock4 ,from the top is a vast outlook1 especially westward toward the ,gates of the ,valley and eastward where the great wall of ,half ,dome dominates the entire landscape4 ,the floor of ,yosemite ,valley is partly hidden by the projecting ,royal ,arch ,cliff4 ,daring rock climbers who have made the descent to the edge describe this dizzy precipice as one of the most impressive in the park4 ,in returning to ,yosemite we take all main trails to the left4 ,retracing our path for about half a mile up ,indian ,ridge1 we turn westward4 ,one mile more thru dense forest takes us past a small stream and to the ,little ,winkle ,branch of ,indian ,creek1 where the main ,snow ,flat ,trail joins from upstream4 ,the steep canyon below was called ,le ,hamite by the ,yosemite ,indians because of the arrowwood which grew there4 ,their main trail into ,yosemite followed along the precipitous east wall of the canyon4 ,a climb of #djj feet thru the forest now takes us to the summit of a long ridge which we follow southward1 finally paralleling the edge of a deep precipice just westward from ,castle ,cliffs and emerging abruptly at ,yosemite ,point 7,alt4 #fice74 ,this is one of the justly famous view-points of ,yosemite and offers a remarkable combination of depths and distances4 ,the granite spire just below and at the right is the ,lost ,arrow1 the ,le ,hammo of the ,yosemite ,tribe1 the story of which is one of their most charming legends4 ,returning a short distance to the main trail we descend to ,yosemite ,creek4 ,on the open ridge just beyond the crossing is a secondary trail which leads to the rim of the ,upper ,yosemite ,fall1 a few hundred feet distant4 ,the wonderful view from this point is most thrillingly described by ,muir4 ,returning to the main trail we cross a small stream where is the junction with the ,yosemite ,creek1 ,eagle ,peak and ,ten ,lakes ,trails 7,trail ,trips #aa1 #i and #aj74 ,there is here a government telephone 7,central #a ring74 ,turning left we descend abruptly #afjj feet by sharp1 dusty switchbacks1 finally skirting the bottom of the almost vertical cliff west of the falls4 ,at this point one can leave the trail and climb to the foot of the upper fall1 in times of low water even entering the cave beneath its base4 ,the climb is dangerous because of the slippery rocks4 ,the trail now passes southward along a granite ledge beneath the shade of oaks and laurel4 ,a short steep descent at the left of the trail takes us to ,valley ,view1 an excellent lookout point4 ,less than one-half mile further is ,columbia ,point 7,alt4 #ejca7 from which is a particularly wide and effective panorama4 ,the following #bjjj-;foot descent to the floor of ,yosemite ,valley is first along granite ledges among scattered ,douglas firs and golden oaks1 and finally beneath the dense laurel and oak forests of the lower talus slopes4 ,at the foot of the trail is the ,el ,capitan ,road4 ,auto busses run between this and other valley points ,here we turn to the right on the main ,glacier ,point ,trail and follow ,trail ,trip #a as far as the trail junction at the top of the ,nevada ,falls zigzags4 ,at this point we turn left1 rising rather abruptly about #bjj feet and then following up the north bank of the ,merced river4 ,about a half mile takes us to a junction where the ,little ,yosemite ,trail 7,trail ,trip #ac7 continues on up the ,little ,yosemite ,valley4 ,our trail turns to the left uphill and mounts by switchbacks thru a dense stand of pine1 fir and cedar4 ,a climb of #ajjj feet in one and a half miles takes us to ,sunrise ,mountain by long sandy zigzags1 the trail emerges at several vantage points from which ,mt4 ,clark is most advantageously seen to the south4 ,the trail now leads almost level through lodgepole pine and fir forests1 emerging suddenly at the foot of ,long ,meadow4 ,to the north is the sharp spire of ,columbia ,finger 7,alt4 #aj1gjj7 and ,tenaya ,peak 7,alt4 #aj1cjj7 at the left4 ,horse-feed is abundant here late in the season but the meadow is generally cold4 ,there is no fishing in the creek4 ,just beyond the #djj-;foot ridge to the west is ,mildred ,lake1 in which are some the valley4 ,it is possible to carefully descend towards the southeast to the rim1 where a slightly extending ledge allows one to peer over the sheer wall of the #cjjj-;foot cliff4 ,the old ,el ,capitan ,trail to ,gentry branches to the west about one-third of a mile north from the summit and continues thru very brushy country along the north rim to ,ribbon ,creek1 about one mile distant4 ,from this point if one is a good woodsman and brush-fighter1 the old blazes may be followed thru a three-mile tangle to the ,gentry ,checking ,station on the ,big ,oak ,flat ,road4 ,yosemite is then specimens of western white pine4 ,at about one-quarter mile 7#d4j miles from ,yosemite7 the ,eagle ,peak ,trail 7,trail ,trip #i7 branches to the left4 ,we follow up the west margin of the creek1 generally thru dense forests1 but emerging at times to clatter over polished and striated granite pavements where monster mountain junipers grotesquely spread their gnarled branches4 ,great potholes have been formed by the stream where it rushes over the smoothly planed bedrock4 ,at a point #c4g miles above the ,eagle ,peak ,trail junction the main trail continues to the left up the west fork 7,trail ,trip #aa74 ,our trail1 which turns right and keeps on up the main fork canyon1 is considerably less traveled4 ,in the next #b4c miles we pass over rough granite up the west bank of the main stream to the ,yosemite ,creek ,ranger ,station on the ,tioga ,road4 ,there is here a government telephone4 ,good camp sites will be found at the crossing a quarter of a mile east of the cabin and fair feed upstream4 ,fishing is fair to poor4 ,there are better camps1 feed and fishing about three miles upstream4 ,at the ,tioga ,road the trail is indistinct4 ,we cross the bridge and follow up the east bank of ,yosemite ,creek on the main road until the blazes are sighted4 ,the first third of a mile is easily traversed1 but the following one and a quarter miles are rough4 ,about three miles above the bridge is a meadow with abundant pasturage4 ,this is a good campsite and fishing is fair upstream4 ,in the next three miles the trail gradually ascends to an elevation of #ibjj feet1 leaving ,yosemite ,creek and passing over the flat divide into the ,tuolumne ,river drainage4 ,at the summit one can leave the trail and walk southeast #a4e miles to ,grant ,lakes 7,alt4 #iejj74 ,these are two beautiful mountain lakes1 the upper one being in a rugged cirque with sheer walls rising above at the east4 ,both were stocked in #aiag with rainbow and eastern brook trout4 ,the ,ten ,lakes good forage except early in the season4 ,the lakes were stocked with eastern brook trout in #aijh1 #aiac1 #aiae and #aiah with ,loch ,leven in #aijh1 and with steelhead in #aiah4 ,fishing is reported excellent4 ,a walk of one and a half miles due north takes us without climbing to the summit of ,grand ,mountain 7,alt4 #icej71 from which is obtained a most impressive view of the ,grand ,canyon of the ,tuolumne and ,muir ,gorge just below4 ,a still finer and more comprehensive panorama may be had from the summit of ,colby ,mountain 7,alt4 #igjj7 on the canyon rim #b4e miles northeast from ,ten route is not especially scenic1 traversing as it does the rather flat forested plateau west of ,yosemite ,creek4 ,the country north of the ,tioga ,road is heavily grazed4 ,feed is sometimes scarce on this account1 and the numerous cattle trails are often confusing4 ,near ,hetch ,hetchy the railroad has obliterated about three miles of trail1 making it necessary to follow the railroad grade4 ,further changes may be expected as the work in ,hetch ,hetchy advances4 ,from ,yosemite we follow ,trail ,trip #c to the trail junction near the top of ,yosemite ,falls zigzags4 ,here we continue straight ahead up the west bank of ,yosemite ,creek1 passing beneath a beautiful forest of ,jeffrey pine1 white and red fir1 lodgepole pine and scattered western white pine4 ,at about a quarter mile but a few steps distant but invisible from the ,hetch ,hetchy ,trail4 ,it is small and contains no trout1 but offers an attractive campsite among the meadows and park-like forests4 ,from ,harden ,lake we turn westward and for six miles ride thru unbroken forest to ,smith ,meadow on ,cottonwood ,creek4 ,here the ,smith ,peak ,trail turns northeast4 ,the #abjj foot climb in two miles to ,smith ,peak 7,alt4 #ghce7 is well worth a side trip1 as it offers a superb panorama4 ,the north slope drops precipitously #dbjj feet to the ,grand ,canyon of the ,tuolumne4 ,at ,smith ,meadow another trail follows down ,cottonwood ,creek and leads to ,hog ,ranch1 seven miles distant4 ,our trail turns northeast and in five miles descends to the ,san ,francisco ,railroad grade1 which it intersects about halfway between ,hog ,ranch and ,hetch ,hetchy4 ,since the trail has here been obliterated it is necessary to follow the railroad grade which1 with pack animals1 is rather dangerous on account of the possible meeting with a train4 ,two miles northward at the end of the railroad is the city camp and offices1 and a short distance beyond1 the dam-site4 ,from here a good road descends to the floor of computed the location of such a point by triangulation4 ,to their surprise it was not one of the dominating summits1 but occurred rather low on the west flank of ,grizzly ,peak4 ,the first ascent on ,june #ad1 #ahig1 proved the calculation to be correct and the crag was named ,sierra ,point in honor of the ,sierra ,club4 ,the trail starts from ,happy ,isles1 which are #b4c miles distant from ,yosemite4 ,here we turn south on the main ,vernal and ,nevada ,falls ,trail or cross ,happy ,isles by the footpath4 ,a quarter mile takes us to a spring and water-trough1 where the ,sierra ,point ,trail branches to the left and ascends the flank of ,grizzly ,peak by switchbacks4 ,a leisurely ascent may be made in forty-five minutes4 ,from the point is not only a good view of the falls but an to broad level meadows walled in by precipitous cliffs #aejj to #bjjj feet high4 ,here in ,little ,yosemite are exhibited all of the ,yosemite features--dome structure1 exfoliation1 glacial phenomena1 royal arches1 etc41 but on a somewhat smaller scale4 ,even the forests and flowers are similar1 for the altitude is here only #fjjj feet--two thousand feet higher than ,yosemite4 ,the level floor1 which has also resulted from the filling in of an ancient lake1 is broken in but three places by the crests of terminal moraines1 which extend across the valley and cause the ,merced to cascade beautifully in silver aprons4 ,in three miles the polished granite walls again converge to form a narrow canyon from which the river emerges1 plunging over a beautiful cascade and into a picturesque glacial tarn4 ,the most outstanding scenic feature of the valley is the perfectly formed ,sugarbowl ,dome 7lately renamed ,bunnell ,point7 at its head4 ,lost ,lake1 near the south base of ,half ,dome1 is a swamp part of the season and later a boggy meadow4 ,it is interesting only as being in the transition stage between mountain lake and mountain meadow4 ,kah-win-na-bah was the ,indian name for the turning left and following ,trail ,trip #e to the first junction1 from which we continue up the canyon4 ,the head of the canyon is three miles eastward4 ,the region is an excellent place for a miles--#ab hours7 ,from the time ,yosemite was discovered1 the mile-high summit of ,half ,dome was regarded as unattainable4 ,the few mountaineers who attempted its ascent returned saying it would never be climbed4 ,finally there came a young ,scotchman1 ,captain ,george ,c4 ,anderson1 with an irrepressible determination to accomplish the feat4 ,after all methods of clinging to the smooth1 steeply inclined granite had failed he procured drills1 hammer and eye-bolts1 and set out to reach the summit by rising from peg to peg4 ,slowly his ladder grew and finally his goal was reached on ,october #ab1 #ahge4 ,anderson was so enthused over the wonderful dome and the sublime views from the summit that he constructed a trail to ,the ,saddle1 from whence his pegs led to the top4 ,here he determined to build a hotel1 but his untimely death in a lonely cabin in ,little ,yosemite prevented its completion4 ,in #ahhc the pegs were swept away by a great1 avalanche4 ,some were later replaced by daring climbers1 but the ascent remained so dangerous that it was seldom attempted4 ,from #ahii no ascents were made until #aiab1 when two adventurous youths fastened ropes to the few remaining pegs and attained the summit4 ,following this1 the dome was frequently climbed4 ,in #aiai a public-spirited citizen of ,san ,francisco donated the money to build a first-class trail to the summit4 ,this was constructed under the auspices of the ,sierra ,club1 and the once perilous ascent finally made safe to all4 ,the round trip to the summit is one of the most thrilling and scenic one-day ,about #bjj yards further1 in a fine grove of ,jeffrey pine and incense cedar1 the ,clouds ,rest ,trail bears to the right along a bench1 while our trail climbs the long switchbacks to the left4 ,the remaining #ejj-;foot climb is thru dense forest4 ,anderson's old trail crosses our route in one place and zigzags up the hillside about a quarter mile eastward4 ,just below the ridge and about #bjj yards to the right of the trail is a spring near the big pile of stones1 which are the only relics of ,captain ,anderson's camp4 ,canteens should be filled here1 as no water will be found higher4 ,a short climb takes us to the crest of the ridge at the lowest point between ,quarter ,domes 7,alt4 #hbgf and #hafj7 at the northeast and ,half ,dome at the southwest4 ,at the ridge top is a forest of lodgepole pine and a sudden transition to pure fir as we cross to the northwestern slope where the climate is more severe4 ,climbing beneath these firs we suddenly emerge at the crest and obtain a wide view of the ,high ,sierra on one side and the depths of ,tenaya ,canyon on the other4 ,a few minutes' walk along the open ridge takes us to the rustic entrance which marks the beginning of the foot trail4 ,the pile of timbers and boards nearby were hewn and split by ,captain ,anderson to be used for his ,half ,dome ,hotel4 ,the foot-trail now climbs abruptly #bej feet by short zigzags and stairs to ,the ,saddle1 along the crest of which we continue to the base of the final ascent4 ,if tennis shoes are to be used they should be put on at this point4 ,the tool-box nearby contains ropes and safety belts for the use of the public1 but the ascent is perfectly safe without them4 ,from here an #hjj-;foot double cable railing with iron posts every ten feet leads to the top4 ,on the steep slopes are footholds1 and at one place a fifty-foot ladder carries us over the most dangerous part of the ascent4 ,turning to the right at the top of the cableway we follow the monuments across the surprisingly flat summit to the brink of the great northeast face1 where we find an overhanging shelf of granite4 ,the panorama at all sides is inexpressibly grand1 but some of the valley features starts from the ,happy ,isles ,road1 turning southward just east of the new ,le ,conte ,lodge4 ,it climbs the talus slope above ,camp ,curry and turns westward up a steep ledge4 ,as the trail mounts to view-commanding heights there are many unusual and impressive glimpses into the depths below4 ,reaching a steep canyon1 the trail turns sharply to the left and climbs beside a small creek4 ,the water is polluted and to drink it is dangerous4 ,near the top1 the trail gradually becomes less and less steep and finally crosses the canyon rim only a few feet distant from ,glacier ,point and the follow the ,chinquapin ,road about a quarter of a mile4 ,just beyond a spring at the left of the road1 the trail turns to the right and climbs abruptly beneath the firs and pines4 ,gradually the forest becomes more open and park-like1 and the firs are replaced by hardy ,jeffrey pines4 ,during the last quarter mile of the ascent we pass over weathered granite which has exfoliated in slabs near the top4 ,at the rounded summit is a gnarled and wind-blown ,jeffrey pine--probably the most photographed tree in the park4 ,to the east is an exceptionally fine panorama of the ,high ,sierra4 ,in returning to ,glacier ,point we follow the trail to the south1 intersecting the road about #cjj yards away4 ,here we turn left1 noting the soft decomposing granite which seems particularly susceptible ,stanford ,point 7,alt4 #ffei71 one of the promontories of the south rim4 ,from here1 as from all other lookouts along the top of the great south wall1 is a vast panorama4 ,retracing our path a short distance we turn to the left1 cross another small brook1 and climb #cej feet in the next half mile to ,crocker ,point 7,alt4 #gjij74 ,closely paralleling the rim for another half mile we halt at
