to reveal humour1 not to impose it4 ,there is no trace of the self-conscious humorist in these drawings4 ,facetiousness is a quality conspicuously and gratefully absent4 ,the artist's only concern is to pluck the very heart out of his subject1 and that his mind has a trend towards the humorous aspect of life is merely accidental4 ,for it is the humour of life1 not merely of men1 that attracts him1 and even when he deals with seemingly quite trivial subjects1 there is nothing petty or trite about his comic treatment of them4 ,he generalises4 ,his observations are of types1 not of individuals1 of situations rather than of scenes4 ,he draws for us people whom we all know but none of us have actually seen1 for when he portrays a type his sketch embodies all the salient characteristics that go to make that type4 ,if he draws a plumber1 for example1 he shows us the ,compleat ,plumber--more like a plumber than any plumber ever was4 ,and as with character1 so with action--whatever ,mr4 ,bateman elects to make his puppets do1 they do it with an intensity and vigour beyond all practical possibility1 but not 7and this is the artist's secret7 beyond the bounds of imagination and belief4 ,when a man is seen running in a ,bateman drawing he does not merely run--he runs2 if he slumbers1 one can veritably hear him snore6 ,the intensity of the artist's imaginative effort visualises for us that
