reached her eighth year when death took 
her pious mother1 and henceforth this   
peasant child felt that ,mary1 the      
,consoler of the ,afflicted1 would be   
her only ,mother4  ,from the time of her
 ,first ,communion at the age of twelve 
years1 she felt an abiding desire to    
give herself unreservedly to her ,divine
 ,master4 ,the choice of her vocation   
was decided in a remarkable manner4     
,when she was eighteen a venerable      
priest appeared to her in a dream1 and  
told her that one day she would be happy
 to come to him and that ,god had great

inquiring1 she learned he was none other

many trials and sufferings she finally  
succeeded in overcoming all obstacles to

thought that ,he who watches over our   
ways had brought her through storm and  
trouble to the calm and peace of the

she entered the ,seminary of the        
,daughters of ,charity4 ,during her     
novitiate she received many supernatural
 favors-- the most remarkable of which  
was the ,manifestation of the           
,miraculous ,medal4  ,in the month of

received the holy habit of a ,daughter  
of ,charity2 and she was then sent to   
the hospital of ,enghien in the faubourg
 ,saint ,antoine of ,paris4 ,for        
forty-six years she labored there in the
 most humble duties1 ever faithful to   
the rules and leading a life hidden with
 ,christ in ,god4 ,she always manifested
 a great love for the poor and a        
wonderful devotion to our ,blessed

final summons came1 and she passed from 
the shadows of earth to the eternal

 right hand side of the sanctuary       
something like the rustling of a silk

standing near ,st4 ,joseph's picture2   
her height was medium1 and her          
countenance so beautiful that it would  
be impossible for me to describe it4    
,she was standing1 clothed in a robe the
 color of auroral light1 with high neck 
and plain sleeves4 ,her head was covered
 with a white veil1 which descended on  
each side to her feet4 ,her hair was    
smooth on the forehead1 and above was a 
coif ornamented with a little lace and  
fitting close to her head4 ,her face was
 only partially covered1 and her feet   
rested upon a globe1 or rather a        
hemisphere 7at least1 ,i saw but half a 
globe74 ,her hands were raised about as 
high as her waist1 and she held in a

precious stones that covered the fingers

persons who wear it indulgenced will    
receive great graces1 especially if they
 wear it around the neck2 graces will be
 abundantly bestowed upon those who have

picture bore the letter ,m surmounted by

feast is yearly celebrated on ,november

noteworthy conversions brought about by 
means of the medal was that of ,alphonse
 ,ratisbonne a staunch believer in      
,judaism and much opposed to the

,east he visited ,rome1 where he became 
acquainted with ,baron de,bussiere1     
himself a convert to the faith4 ,the    
latter used every argument to bring     
,ratisbonne to the true faith1 but his  
efforts were in vain4  ,he succeeded    
however in getting ,ratisbonne to wear a
 medal1 which the latter accepted       
reluctantly enough4 ,a few days later   

they happened to enter the church of ,s4
 ,andrea delle ,frate1 and while        
de,bussiere paid a short visit to the   
nearby monastery ,ratisbonne was left   
alone to look about the church4         
,suddenly he was seized with an         
indescribable emotion1 and raising his  
eyes to the chapel of ,st4 ,michael     
where the light seemed to be            
concentrated1 there in the midst of the 
light the ,blessed ,virgin appeared full
 of majesty and sweetness--just as she  
is represented on the medal4 ,at the    
same time an irresistible force drew him
 towards her4 ,she made a sign with her 
hand that he should kneel1 and seemed to

urge all members to strive to spread    
this devotion among their friends and   
acquaintances2 in other words1 to become
 ,promoters of the ,association4 ,they  
should endeavor to form bands of twelve1
 symbolic of the twelve stars on the    
,miraculous ,medal4 ,any member maybe a 
,promoter1 and the same ,promoter may   
form many bands of members4 ,promoters  
will receive suitable premiums1 and will

 participate in three special ,novenas  
of ,masses offered each year4 ,one in   
the ,chapel of the ,miraculous ,medal1  
at ,perryville1 ,missouri1 the other in 
the ,mother ,house of ,paris where the  
,blessed ,virgin appeared to ,sister    
,catherine4 ,the third ,novena is       
offered up in the ,church of ,st4       
,andrea in ,rome1 on the altar where our
 ,blessed ,lady appeared to and         
converted ,alphonse ,ratisbonne1 a      
prejudiced ,jew4  ,in all matters       
connected with our ,association address3

members to have a constant and          
ever-increasing devotion to our ,blessed

requested to say frequently the         
invocation inscribed on the medal3 ,o   
,mary conceived without sin1 pray for us
 who have recourse to thee4 ,we would   

also be pleased to receive from members 
an account of the special favors and    
graces they may receive through ,our    
,lady of the ,miraculous ,medal1 for    
such statements tend to make her        
powerful intercession better known and  
to spread devotion to her4  ,you are    
well aware that your great work in life1
 the one thing necessary is your        
personal sanctification4 ,the one thing 
we need in life is greater love for
