comprehensive work1 giving a full and detailed explanation of the ,art of manufacturing ,hair ,work in all its various branches1 has been so frequently urged upon the attention of the author1 that1 in compliance with an almost universal demand1 he has concluded to publish a book which will clearly illustrate the ,art of ,hair ,dressing1 and making ,hair ,jewelry and ,hair ,work of every description4 ,his perfect familiarity with the business--the result of many years' successful experience--renders him eminently competent to impart the fullest information upon the subject of which he treats1 while the great consumption and rapidly increasing demand for every description of ,hair ,goods1 will make this work he now presents to the public1 one of particular interest to all classes4 ,heretofore the ,art of making these goods has been zealously guarded by a few dealers1 who have accumulated fortunes1 and would still retain it a profound secret but for the publication of this book4 ,this is the only descriptive volume ever published on ,hair ,work4 ,it is an elaborate1 carefully prepared book1 containing over one thousand drawings1 devices and diagrams1 engraved at great expense to the publisher1 and accompanied with the most comprehensive instructions4 ,it not only reveals to the most ordinary comprehension the hitherto concealed mysteries of the ,art1 but will prove an indispensable adjunct to every lady's toilet table1 as by its aid she will not only be able to dress her own hair in every variety of style1 but make her own ,hair ,jewelry and articles of ,hair work1 including ,switches1 ,braids1 ,curls1 ,waterfalls1 c41 assisted by a reference to plates of the most modern ,european and ,american styles4 ,for children1 no art or accomplishment is more useful than the ability to make articles of tasteful ornament in ,hair ,work4 ,this work will open to all such persons a path to agreeable and profitable occupation4 ,jewelry ,dealers1 from the clear instructions herein given1 can manufacture any required pattern of ,hair ,jewelry1 and add1 without extra expense1 a new and lucrative branch to their business4 ,persons wishing to preserve and weave into lasting mementos1 the hair of a deceased father1 mother1 sister1 brother1 or child1 can also enjoy the inexpressible advantage and satisfaction of knowing that the material of their own handiwork is the actual hair of the loved and gone4 ,no other work ever met with such an earnest demand as this treatise upon the art of ,hair ,braiding4 ,it must certainly commend itself to the ladies of our country as invaluable4 ,even a hasty perusal will convince every one of its utility and worth4 ,translations in ,french and ,german are in progress4 ,illustration ,,introductory ,,remarks4 ,,in this book of instruction1 ,i have introduced for practice the easiest braids first--which are chain braids4 ,the first pattern1 found on page #i1 is a very easy and handsome one1 and should be practiced to perfection before trying any other1 as it will enable the beginner to execute all others after the first is perfected4 ,a new beginner should be particular to place the strands correctly upon the table1 and mark the cover with precision1 after the manner shown in the diagram4 ,i have1 by the introduction of plates1 diagrams and explanatory remarks1 made comprehensive and simple the execution of all the braids herein contained4 ,the novice should first give special attention to preparing the hair for braiding1 the adjustment of it to the bobbins1 weights1 molds1 c41 of which plates1 and full explanations are to be found elsewhere in this book4 ,i wish to impress upon the mind of the worker1 that every change made with the strands changes the numbers of them to correspond with the numbers on the table4 ,for example3 lift ,no4 #a over ,no4 #b1 which would make ,no4 #a ,no4 #b1 and ,no4 #b ,no4 #a1 c4 ,illustration3 ,,braiding ,,table ,,and ,,position ,,in ,,braiding4 ,,square in the ,art of ,hair ,work1 it is but due to the purchasers of it to say something in relation to the trade in ,human ,hair4 ,it is not my intention1 however1 to enter into an extended detail and complete history1 but simply give a few items that will serve to show what enormous strides have been taken within the last few years in this branch of business4 ,it is a business that but few know anything about--at least in this country1 for it is comparatively new here--but it is one that is very rapidly increasing1 and is now almost doubling itself each year4 ,the larger quantity1 in fact nearly the whole amount of hair retailed in this country is imported from ,europe1 where the dealing in human hair has been made an established and legitimate business for years1 and a great deal of attention is paid in purchasing and preparing it for the market4 ,paris is the greatest market for the sale of human hair in the world2 but the amount of superfluous hair used and worn throughout all ,europe1 could we give the figures1 would seem incredible4 ,the amount imported to the ,united ,states in the years of #ahei and #ahfj was not far from #aej1jjj and #bjj1jjj pounds1 which was valued at that time at from #hjj1jjj to #a1jjj1jjj4 ,since that time it has been steadily increasing1 and the amount imported last year may be set down at three times as much as during the years above mentioned4 ,paris also finds as great a sale for the article in ,russia as in ,america--the shipments to each being about equal4 ,thus1 it will be seen1 that if all the hair reserved in ,europe for the home demand were added to that which is imported1 the amount would be almost beyond conception2 and yet1 but about one-tenth part of the whole production ever leaves its native country4 ,it is mostly procured from the markets of ,france1 ,italy1 ,russia and ,germany1 and large quantities are obtained from ,norway and ,sweden4 ,the ,norwegians were among the first to make ornaments of hair to be worn as jewelry1 but1 in a great measure1 we are indebted to the ,french for the perfection to which the art has attained4 ,of the different varieties of hair1 that which is obtained in ,france and ,italy is by far the best1 being of a much finer texture1 even color1 and of a more glossy appearance than that from other countries4 ,the principal requirement in hair to make it valuable is length1 and after it is thrown upon the market it is all assorted--the long from the short--which is a task of extreme difficulty4 ,the prices of hair range all the way from #ae to #bjj per pound1 7a wide range1 but certainly not too large17 and is rated according to hue1 length and texture4 ,the smallest price paid is for the short1 coarse hair of the poorest quality1 and which can be used only for certain purposes4 ,hair of the ordinary colors range in price from #ae to #ajj per pound1 but that of gray and white from #ajj to #bjj per pound1 and even then is not considered exorbitant4 ,in fact1 hair is worth any and all prices4 ,we know of one dealer who had in his possession a very small quantity1 weighing but a half pound and measuring seventy inches1 for which he was offered four hundred dollars6 and1 strange as it may appear1 he refused to accept it4 ,white hair is mostly obtained by being picked from the gray1 and it not unfrequently happens that many hundred pounds have to be assorted before being able to secure one single pound of pure white4 ,it is mainly used in the manufacture of wigs1 and it frequently puzzles the dealer to prepare one for a customer that will exactly match1 and this1 with the scarcity of the article1 cause the extraordinary price4 ,hair is shipped in both a prepared and unprepared state4 ,that which is prepared undergoes a process of washing1 scouring and cleansing1 which leaves it in the nicest possible state2 all the oil1 dirt and other unhealthy substances are completely separated from it1 leaving it perfectly free from all unhealthy influences4 ,that which is shipped in an unprepared1 or raw state1 is subjected to the same process of cleansing after its arrival1 and it is so thorough that it is altogether impossible for anything except the hair to remain4 ,it has frequently been examined with a microscope1 which has proved in every case how successful the cleansing process had been1 for it revealed nothing whatever of a foreign nature1 and1 in fact1 after its extraordinary cleaning it would be simply impossible4 ,after being fully prepared it is then made into switches1 curls1 plaits1 fronts1 wigs1 chignons1 and not a small amount is used in the manufacture of hair jewelry1 and such other articles as are worn for ornaments4 ,the jewelry manufactured at this time is as durable as the all gold jewelry1 and is done in a style of surpassing neatness1 thus rendering it beautiful1 either as an ornament or memento4 ,there are but very few places in the ,united ,states where hair jewelry is made1 and as it is comparatively a new business1 but few have learned it4 ,it is surprising1 however1 to notice the many beautiful patterns and elegant designs into which it is transformed4 ,there is nothing in the way of jewelry or ornament of any description but what is or may be made from human hair2 and1 after being gold-mounted1 the contrast between them makes the hair jewelry preferable to the all gold4 ,there are many strange incidents related of the human hair suddenly changing its color--many of which it is hard to believe--and the causes assigned are various4 ,we are told of persons who1 from excessive grief1 found their hair had gradually changed from a dark brown to an almost perfect white2 others1 from the same cause1 in the short space of one week discovered their hair plentifully streaked with grey1 giving them the appearance1 although young1 of being quite old4 ,many have had their hair change on account of extreme fright1 but we have now to give the first instance we have ever heard of its turning from white to that of any other color1 except by the aid of dyes4 ,a ,parisian1 ,m4 ,stanislaus ,martin1 has published in the ,bulletin de ,therapeutique the curious case of a worker in metals who had wrought in copper only five months1 and whose hair1 which was lately white1 is now of so decided a green that the man cannot appear in the street without immediately becoming the object of general curiosity4 ,he is perfectly well1 his hair alone being affected by the copper1 notwithstanding the precautions taken by him to protect it from the action of the metal4 ,chemical analysis shows that his hair contains a notable quantity of acetate of copper1 and that it is to this circumstance that it owes its beautiful green color1 which is most singular and remarkable4 ,the practice of wearing false hair1 although it was not generally dealt in as traffic1 has been in vogue many hundred years4 ,the ,greek and ,roman ladies were1 in olden times1 as active in their toilet for the head as the fashionable ladies of the present day1 and false hair was always brought into requisition1 which was then obtained from the ,germans1 and they in turn from their slaves4 ,powdering the hair1 which is now the rage in all fashionable circles1 is also an ancient practice1 and was as much indulged in by the men as the women4 ,history tells us that the consumption of hair powder by the soldiers of ,george ,,ii was enormous4 ,it was calculated1 that inasmuch as the military force of ,england and the colonies was1 including cavalry1 infantry1 militia and fensibles1 #bej1jjj1 each man used a pound of flour a week1 simply for powdering their hair4 ,the quantity consumed in this way was #f1ejj tons per annum2 an amount sufficient to sustain #cj1jjj persons on bread4 ,gold and silver hair powder was also plentifully used1 and at a time much earlier in the world's history1 than is generally supposed4 ,josephus relates that ,solomon's horse-guards daily strewed their heads with gold-dust1 which glittered in the sun2 and there are similar instances of different personages recorded in the bible4 ,the human hair seems to have been given us both for an ornament and covering--being susceptible of transformation in almost any desired shape1 and apparently indispensable for covering and protecting the head4 ,the ancient ,greeks were very partial to long hair1 considering it by far the more becoming2 but the ,egyptians regarded it as an incumbrance1 shaved their heads1 and substituted wigs4 ,the ancients1 generally speaking1 strangely considered a fine head of hair so desirable1 that it became sacred4 ,they frequently dedicated it to the gods1 on important occasions of marriage1 victory1 escape from death and danger1 and the burial of friends4 ,different styles of wearing the hair1 was resorted to for denoting the various grades1 or positions in life1 of the people1 some wearing it quite long1 others short1 and some dressing it in a peculiar manner1--each style1 or length1 being according to the condition1 wealth1 or social standing of the wearer4 ,plucking it out1 or neglecting it1 was a token of affliction4 ,hair contains a very small quantity of water1 manganese1 iron1 and various salts of lime1 which have been found by the various methods of analyzation1 and it is owing to these properties that it is peculiarly indestructible4 ,it has been found on mummies1 more than twenty centuries old1 in a perfect and unaltered state1 and many instances are related1 which are now admitted to be facts1 of the hair continuing to grow1 for a time1 after death4 ,there has never before been a book written and published1 that was particularly dedicated to the subject of ,hair1 and as the field is a vast one1 both as regards the importance of the subject1 and the information to be gained thereby1 it is simply strange that no one has ever entered it4 ,it has been too long neglected1 and the increasing necessity for a treatise of this kind1 has been pressed upon the attention of the author1 and induced the publication of this work1 which will certainly meet the necessities of the age4 ,there is much else that might be said on this subject that would prove both interesting and instructive1 but we prefer for the present to let it rest4 ,we have endeavored in preparing this book both to instruct and amuse2 for1 by following its instructions1 it may be made to be profitable and highly remunerative1 and in making articles1 either for gifts1 mementoes1 or otherwise1 it will certainly be amusing and entertaining4 ,we have given the instructions in a way that all may readily understand1 and as the patterns are numerous1 and the designs elegant1 we think there can be nothing lacking to make the book all it claims to be4 ,the
