,,may ,,and ,,his ,,art ,and now1 ,mr4 ,whistler1 what about ,black and ,white ,art8 said an interviewer4 ,black and ,white ,art1 said ,mr4 ,whistler1 is summed up in two words--,phil ,may6 ,nor is this merely a ,new ,school of ,art paradox4 ,it is one which is held by artists of all grades alike1 and even by the art editor who professes to know and supply what the public likes4 ,that a youth who never had a lesson in drawing in his life should have earned such a reputation between the ages of seventeen and thirty1 and should have gone above men as honoured in their profession as ,sir ,john ,tenniel and ,mr4 ,george du ,maurier1 and on a level with ,charles ,keene1 ,mr4 ,abbey and ,mr4 ,gibson1 is enough to make ,mr4 ,may's art extremely interesting4 ,but his art is not nearly so instructive as ,mr4 ,may himself2 he is a human document to the hand of the realist1 and the student of heredity--if ever there was one4 ,he has been interviewed in a sketchy fashion by the journalistic ,mrs4 ,mangnall innumerable times2 the high-art magazines have added him to their lists of ,our ,graphic ,humorists1 ,black and ,white ,artists1 and ,how ,caricaturists ,draw4 ,the world is familiar with his own grotesque sketches of himself1 and1 whether he is attired in riding breeches1 a straw hat perched on the back of his head1 as he drives a coster's cart1 or is being flung out of a cab1 his long cigar and his hair cut in a bang straight across his forehead1 are unchangeable and unmistakeable4 ,the public no doubt thinks that this is only one of ,phil ,may's jokes at his own expense1 for the bold ,rabelaisian roundness of his humour suggests a man the very reverse of the lean and hungry ,cassius4 ,but ,phil ,may's humour does not consist of making fat people thin1 thin people fat1 exaggerating features1 putting big heads upon little legs1 and such methods of distortion as we have so often seen resorted to4 ,this we learn from a glance at his home1 which is his studio life4 ,mr4 ,may's artistic treasures are none of them the old masters of a millionaire1 but purely personal household gods1 each with a little story of a friendship1 a reminiscence of hard-up times1 or some personal taste4 ,the volumes in the old oak book-case are not first editions1 but they show a fine appreciation for the best literature1 and even the blue china is not wired and hung-up4 ,the drawing-board seems to act as an address-book1 and the grandfather's clock by the fireplace in its old age has given up making a nuisance of itself by repeating ,for ever1 never4 ,the mantelpiece is peopled with little ,japanese dolls1 little bronzes and brasses1 and figures carved in yellow ivory4 ,these1 with a few plaster casts of arms and legs which hang on the walls1 a line of ,japanese prints put around the ceiling to try an effect1 a few ,japanese lanterns hanging from the roof1 some ,japanese lay-figures in armour standing round the walls1 and a few sketches1 are about all the decoration of this long sky-lit room4 ,but most important of all is the index to as remarkable a story as was ever told by a successful man1 a story which has never been told before4 ,it is only an old mug4 ,the substance is earthenware1 the decoration obviously pseudo-oriental1 and the design and glaze nothing marvellous4 ,it clearly comes from the ,english potteries1 but it has no mark1 and it is certainly not ,chelsea1 ,derby1 ,yarmouth1 ,bristol1 ,lowestoft1 or any of the rarer and higher-priced wares4 ,the hand of ,wedgwood1 ,voyez1 or ,elers is not seen in its design1 and1 indeed1 it is difficult precisely to locate its origin4 ,and yet1 it should now take its place in ,chaffers and ,church who know it not4 ,our dilemma is solved by ,mr4 ,may himself1 who seems1 in his usual casual modest way1 to have attached no importance to it1 and who1 from subsequent inquiries1 has only a very superficial knowledge which would not satisfy a ceramic maniac1 to say nothing of a family historian4 ,that mug was made1 says ,mr4 ,may1 by my grandfather4 ,i don't know much more about him than he knows about me2 but if you are interested in china1 you may care for some details which may help you to hunt it up4 ,he was a potter in the ,midlands--if you want to be particular1 at ,snead1 in ,staffordshire--and1 ,i believe1 was fairly well off2 for the design1 which is that of a hunt1 was made to commemorate his becoming the master of the local hounds4 ,if you say that his name is not given in any of the handbooks1 ,i am sure you are right2 but all ,i know is1 the firm1 whatever it was called1 came to grief owing to the war--and ,i can't tell you what war2 but it was not the ,china war4 ,here the student of heredity will discern the rude germ of the artistic temperament which has so developed in the third generation4 ,it was in the interests of the hereditary artistic strain that ,mr4 ,may was induced to tell the story4 ,he is not so impressed as are many people with the necessity of having a grandfather1 and knows no more about him than is related above4 ,mr4 ,may's father was apprenticed as an engineer to ,george ,stephenson1 and worked in the drawing office of the great engineer at ,newcastle1 where he met his wife4 ,she was a ,miss ,macarthy1 and her father was ,eugene ,macarthy1 who belonged to an old theatrical family connected with the management of the ,new ,theatre1 ,wolverhampton4 ,an old bill on satin struck to commemorate a ,bespeak performance1 under the distinguished patronage of ,lord ,wrottesley1 gives ,eugene ,macarthy as playing ,lord ,tinsel in ,the ,hunchback1 and ,jenkins1 in ,gretna ,green2 or1 ,the ,biter ,bit1 on ,friday1 ,may #ith1 #ahde4 ,in this bill ,mr4 ,james ,bennett was the ,master ,walter2 ,h4 ,lacy the ,modus2 ,mrs4 ,w4 ,rignold the ,julia1 and ,miss ,fanny ,wallack1 ,helen4 ,mr4 ,may's father was unlucky in life4 ,he started a brass-foundry1 but1 as your host puts it1 his partner cleared off with all the brass2 and a consulting-engineer business was not much more satisfactory4 ,mr4 ,phil ,may was born in #ahfd1 shortly after the collapse of the brass-foundry1 at ,wortley1 an outlying manufacturing district of ,leeds4 ,his father died when he was nine years old1 and his schooldays1 as he tells you1 commenced early in the ,school ,board era4 ,at that time the new officials were very alert1 so he had one year's scholastic education4 ,he was a little delicate fellow1 and was made a butt of by the other boys2 and he was the victim of many practical jokes4 ,my artistic career1 ,mr4 ,may tells you1 may be said to have begun when ,i was about twelve1 at which time the ,grand ,theatre1 ,leeds1 opened4 ,the local scene-painter was a man called ,fox1 a brother of ,charles ,fox1 and ,i became acquainted with his son1 who helped to mix the distemper4 ,young ,fox and other boys called ,ford1 ,sammy ,stead1 and ,i used to rehearse pantomimes4 ,our stage was a back street1 and our scenery was designed with a stick in the gutter2 but we omitted nothing4 ,the star-traps were all marked out1 and we made our descents by flinging ourselves on our faces in the muddy road4 ,i was always a sprite1 and carried ',the ,book of ,fate1' which had a prominent place in all our pantomimes4 ,mr4 ,may used to sketch sections of other people's designs of costumes for use in the ward-robe room1 and eventually got to designing comic dresses and suggestions for masks and make-ups in the property-room4 ,this brought him orders for actor's portraits1 for which he received at first a shilling1 and later five shillings4 ,remuneration bred independence1 and he took to living with three or four other boys1 their lodgings costing five shillings a week4 ,after a year or two of this life1 the late ,fred ,stimpson1 who had a travelling burlesque company1 engaged ,may to play small parts and do six sketches every week to serve as window-bills in the various small towns they visited4 ,his remuneration was twelve shillings a week1 and on this he lived for two or more years4 ,after that1 about #ahgc1 he got an engagement to draw for a small local comic journal1 called ,the ,yorkshire ,gossip1 which died after four weeks4 ,in #ahhb ,mr4 ,may was engaged to design the dresses for the ,leeds pantomime1 and flushed with success1 or sickened with the squalid hand-to-hand life he had led since he was a boy--he was then a full-grown man of seventeen--he made up his mind to burn his boats and come to ,london1 and there he became a tragedian4 ,his finances consisted of one sovereign4 ,fifteen shillings and five-pence halfpenny bought him a third-class ticket1 and vanity and temptation cost him four shillings and sixpence at the ,gaiety ,bar4 ,but what1 he adds1 did it all matter8 ,i was in ,london--the lap of luxury4 ,i remembered my aunt1 ,mrs4 ,hanner1 who had married again1 an actor called ,fred ,morton1 and ,i looked them up at ,st4 ,john ,street ,road1 ,islington4 ,mr4 ,may does not think they were very glad to see him2 but they took him in1 gave him food and a night's lodging1 and next day his new uncle1 after showing him the sights of ,london1 put him in the ,leeds train4 ,he got out1 however1 at the next station and walked back4 ,chance led him towards ,clapham way4 ,it was winter and he tried to get work1 till he was too tired to walk and too cold and hungry to speak4 ,he begged the broken dry biscuits at the public-houses2 he quenched his thirst at the street fountains4 ,the best bit of luck he had was when he induced a child on the ,suspension ,bridge to part with his bread and bacon in exchange for a walking-stick4 ,he led a terrible life of privation1 and by night slept in the ,park1 on the ,embankment1 or in a cart in the ,market near the stage-door of the ,princess's ,theatre4 ,he was too proud to go to his relations or to ,mr4 ,wilson ,barrett4 ,the first bit of real luck he had was in meeting with the keeper of a photograph shop near ,charing ,cross4 ,he took ,may's drawing of ,irving1 ,toole and ,bancroft1 and published it4 ,it was a partnership arrangement1 and the publisher lost about ,l#e in the venture4 ,but though he was nearly as hard up as ,mr4 ,may was1 when he had any money1 he used often to take him to a shop near the old ,pavilion and give him a dinner of beef a la mode4 ,it was good6 ,mr4 ,may tells you4 ,a ,mr4 ,rising who played at the ,comedy ,theatre1 introduced ,mr4 ,may to ,lionel ,brough1 who purchased the original sketch of ,irving1 ,bancroft and ,toole for ,l#b #bs41 and introduced him to a little paper called ,society1 for which he did some drawings4 ,but between these periods ,mr4 ,may suffered long spells of penury1 when he would have been glad to have taken up his position with a handkerchief full of broken chalks and drawn on the pavement4 ,at last a drawing of ,mr4 ,bancroft in ,society brought him an introduction to ,mr4 ,edward ,russell1 who introduced him to the management of the ,st4 ,stephen's ,review4 ,it was not then an illustrated paper1 but a ,christmas ,number was being issued4 ,the illustrations were already arranged for1 so there was nothing for him to do4 ,the disappointment1 or long privation--for he was only eighteen at the time--or both1 brought on an illness1 and he returned to ,leeds4 ,a telegram from ,mr4 ,russell brought him to ,london4 ,the illustrations for the ,christmas ,number would not do1 and ,mr4 ,may was asked to do them all himself--cartoon1 illustrations1 cover1 and initials--in a week6 ,he hired a room in a small hotel near the ,princess's1 and worked day and night1 finished the whole thing1 and was paid4 ,he remained in his humble lodgings till his money was gone1 and he used1 as he says1 to go out for breakfast and dinner1 which meant walking about for appearances' sake4 ,the proprietor of the hotel in question1 who was also a waiter at a club1 found him out1 and when he came home at three or four in the morning used to dig him out to share his supper2 and when1 through sheer shame1 ,may confessed he could not pay him1 he insisted on his remaining in his house4 ,mr4 ,brough introduced ,mr4 ,may to ,alias the costumier1 who engaged him as designer of the ,nell ,gwynne dresses1 and kept him on to design pictures for a book1 ,the ,juvenile ,shakespeare1 on which they were to collaborate2 but it came to nothing4 ,then the ,st4 ,stephen's started illustrations1 and he was employed by it till an agent came from ,australia to discover an artist for the ,sydney ,bulletin4 ,mr4 ,may seized the opportunity of going to the antipodes1 and went4 ,the fine air1 the warm climate1 and the regular food made1 as he tells you1 a man of him2 but it was the starvation1 he adds1 which made him the artist he is4 ,the rest of ,mr4 ,phil ,may's story has been told before1 and is not interesting1 being one long series of successes1 which culminated in his winning the blue ribbon of black-and-white art1 an appointment on ,punch1 which leaves him free to draw for any other paper that appreciates his art and can pay his prices4 ,the story of his early life and struggles is not exceeded in interest1 perhaps1 by that of anybody except that of ,henri ,murger or that of ,honore de ,balzac4 ,the hard life he once led has left his features somewhat hard1 but it has not soured his disposition4 ,there is nothing of the cynic in him4 ,he is still careless of everything but his art1 generous to a fault not only with his money1 but with his lavish praises of the work of those who aspire to be his rivals4 ,high and low1 everybody speaks of him as dear old ,phil1 and the applause1 even of princes1 has not made him a snob4 ,his talents and his temptations would have made many a boy of more severe training a pickpocket1 burglar1 or a gaol bird1 as ,francois ,villon was4 ,it made ,phil ,may an artist1 and his story is one to be remembered as an encouragement instead of a warning4 ,of the one hundred and twenty drawings collected in this volume1 there is little to say1 for they speak for themselves4 ,for some of them1 ,i am indebted to ,mr4 ,louis ,meyer of #ac;a ,pall ,mall1 who has enabled me to complete the series of drawings done at a time when ,phil ,may was1 as ,i have described him above1 a poor1 struggling artist4 ,youth and enthusiasm1 made these drawings bolder than most of his later work1 and the lack of pence1 when every line meant pennies1 made them more elaborately finished than those which of late he has made us accustomed to4 ,but though everyone is satisfied with his present work1 ,i can only trust that the artistic majority will think with me that he has never done better than these drawings which are here collected4 ,that at least is why ,i have published them4 ,,augustus ,m4 ,,moore --------------------------------------- ,illustration3 ,,the ,,legitimate ',ow's business1 ,jacko8 ,damned bad4 ,what can you expect with this
